Context

Feeling free comes from getting to know your own personal deep inner connection to who you are, what you believe, what you want, and daring to trust and follow that — regardless of all we’ve been taught we should or should not believe ‘out there’. That is not easy.

Even if we understand that all the info about right and wrong we’re bombarded with — from family, teachers, politicians, peers, influencers, gurus, etc etc — is all just chosen narratives (a story each holds as true), and can never be the full picture, we all exist in bubbles of belief based on our conditioning.

So what do we learn about China? Something like: China has a totalitarian government; a people controlled by mass surveillance; a brainwashed army; digital currency; and a credit score system that limits people’s movements.

China, some say, is one of the biggest threats to our Western way of life.

I recently returned from a 30-day visit to China.

When we travel, we experience different ways of living that challenge what we think we know. When we experience things we’ve accepted as fact to be just narratives, and not the whole picture, this frees us from some of that outside conditioning.

I experienced this in Morocco chatting with women wearing hijabs who clearly wore the trousers in their relationships; I experienced it in Malaysia where people of multiple religions celebrate holidays from Buddhism; Hinduism; Christianity; to Chinese New Year — together; I experienced it in Portugal when the country lost electricity twice. No apocalyptic breakdown of society. People came together.

Not what we are taught.

China once again expanded my mind.

Travel does that.

One clarification: I am not saying that bad things aren’t happening in China. But I am saying that bad things are happening everywhere. And .. so are good.

My intention is simply to share with you some of my personal observations being in China that challenge the stories we’ve been told, and what we’ve been taught.

Religion in China is not banned.

I visited many Buddhist temples, Taoist temples, a mosque, and a church .. with a huge cross visible from the street.

In fact China adores the history of Taoist and Buddhist influence on its dynasties, showcased in China’s parks and incredible museums.

Social Credit Score system does not exist.

Yup it’s true.

Imagine an app for the people of your own specific home town. If you sign up for it, you can increase your score, and by doing so, you get freebies .. like a hot drink at your local café or a meal at a local restaurant.

Such local apps were piloted, but didn’t take off. The Chinese government does black list people who have not paid a fine or refused to turn up to court, but the idea of a credit score was actually the Western media merging this with local apps. The Chinese have never heard of a government social credit score.

China is critical of its own society and what needs improving.

The Chinese government absolutely enforces the message: “the government may not be criticised for doing its best.”

But China can be, and is, critical of what needs improving. For example, while in China I watched an incredible 2024 film called Upstream about the gig economy and the extremely hard life of delivery scooter guys (highly recommended), and a very heavy 2024 film called Stand By Me about homeless children abused and/or abandoned by their parents and living on the streets.

The Chinese youth love to dress up.

Men dress up as women, women as men, or why not dress up as an animal, a fairy, an elf, or as any one of your favourite characters from anime, manga, games, films, comics, or TV?

Then let’s go party!

Others — both men and women — enjoy dressing up in clothes from their favourite Chinese dynasty to take photos or to walk around town.

The Chinese people have a live and let live attitude.

The Chinese don’t understand why anyone would not want to eat meat (when meat is sooo good 🤤) but you can be a vegetarian if you want to. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Homosexuality was decriminalised in 1997. The 2018 film Hello Mr. Billionaire has a reveal that two men are a gay couple at the end.

I saw women holding hands and men holding hands. Maybe just friends? But who cares? The point is that strangers just don’t interfere. Focus on your own life. Live and let live.

China feels playful.

The Chinese people love cute, creativity, and fun.

People young and old start unplanned dance gatherings in parks, in shopping malls, or simply on the street .. and anyone is welcome to join in.

There are also loads of places to play all sorts of games, buy surprise toys, or go to one of the many DIY craft shops where you can go make things.

KTV (karaoke) is also a very typical fun evening out for the Chinese.

Everyone has access to cheap advanced healthcare.

I went to the doctor — and then I went again because the system was so good.

To see a specialist I turned up at the local community hospital and paid ¥15 yuan (about £1.50 or $2). The doctor then said I could have an ultrasound to be sure, so I paid ¥60 and waited just 30 mins. Around me were rooms with different medical scanners (MRI, CT, X-ray, etc) and people going for blood tests and full body check ups.

To give you an idea of what that cost is for locals, a meal in a restaurant can cost up to about ¥130, while typical street food costs around ¥20.

Officials are friendly.

It began the moment I arrived at the airport.

I had my reservations, invitation letter, etc, prepared, and the passport control officer didn’t check a thing. She said “Here for 30 days?” and with a big smile stamped my passport and said “Welcome!”.

From ticket checkers for the metro, tram or train, to security guards at museums. I had friendly chats with officials all the time.

People in China believe their government is advancing China for the benefit of all.

Try to imagine that in the 1980s (into the 1990s) China was an extremely poor country with people travelling around on bicycles. That, for me, is 🤯.

In just 30 years people have experienced their country becoming one of the cleanest, safest and most technologically advanced in the world.

Electric cars and electric scooters have been commonplace for a decade already, successfully reducing smog, and China today boasts some of the most advanced architecture and infrastructure in the world. No matter someone’s wealth today, all have access not only to healthcare but also to state of the art museums, parks, shopping malls, and transport systems (bus, tram and metro tickets cost just ¥2).

Rules are explained and make sense.

China has cameras and rules everywhere. Rules like “Don’t eat on the metro so everyone can enjoy a clean environment” or “Supervise your children so fellow passengers can have a pleasant journey” or (my favourite just because I wanted to climb on a statue for a photo) “Don’t climb on statues so as not to damage them”.

But the rules don’t feel offensive. The tone is participation for the benefit of all, and the message is that together and unified we create a happy and functioning society.

In fact it may be surprising to learn that legally you can walk the streets drinking alcohol. Rarely someone does though, because people see it as bad form for a progressive and civilised society.

The Chinese government is interested in contentment not chaos.

Here’s an interesting fact: China has stored enough food reserves to feed its entire 1.5 billion people for at least a year in time of crisis.

And while China is considered cashless because QR codes via Alipay and Wechat Pay dominate transactions everywhere, cash must be accepted by businesses and people alike; the government maintains cash as compulsory legal tender to cover scenarios like technological failures or power outages.

While the West forecasts AI, robots, economics, wars, and geopolitics ending our world, the focus in China is entirely on progress with constant daily news reports showing AI and robots used for real life agricultural and medical advancements, reporting collaboration with other countries, and daily updates from their astronauts in space.

While there, I saw reports on projects with the UAE to ensure enough energy for China in the future, and with a German company helping to build China’s ‘flying cars’ (yes they’re real and being trialed right now).

China is so positive about the future of tech that it has an open source AI policy, and the government is actively putting plans into place to educate and provide alternative work to people whose jobs will be lost as AI and robots are used more.

The Chinese government promotes unity not hate.

The focus then — on TV, in the media, and out and about in shops, parks, malls, and museums — is one of progress, optimism, positivity, and “we’ve got you”.

It was also interesting for me to see that news reports on wars were not critical of particular sides. China was not reporting on this country being bad — or this country being good. Russia is not better or worse than the USA. Ukraine is not better or worse than Russia. Reports are neutral.

Interesting also is that China has the world’s largest active military force, yet China’s official policy is ‘only go to war if directly attacked’.

The state message is not on disliking others, but on taking care of each other, and getting along, which includes China’s foreigners. Signs and announcements are in English, too. Posters on walls send the clear message: ‘united we are stronger’.

The importance of community is strongly promoted.

The Chinese believe family should take care of family.

There are very few homeless in China.

The reason is that if you are homeless, you are taken back to your relatives and they are expected to take care of you and get you off the streets.

I was asked following a few calls back home, “Is it normal in England that your parents or siblings complain about picking you up from the airport then?

Because in China they would be ashamed.”

The Chinese spend evenings and weekends, as well as festivals and holidays, at home or out and about, eating food and drinking tea, as families together .. parents, uncles, aunts, and cousins (who they call brothers and sisters).

Eating in China is crazy fun.

The Chinese are obsessed with food. It’s not about filling yourself up, or even about nutrition — the Chinese are obsessed with the experience.

In traditional restaurants you can enter into the busy kitchen to prepare your own sauce. In modern restaurants, you can get a free manicure before your meal, a free photo print out after your meal, and if you are alone, you can have a friendly giant cuddly toy in the opposite chair to keep you company. The Chinese love cute.

The point of consumerism is to enjoy and play.

Consumerism is not seen as bad in China. It is fully embraced.

People have apps that give them free milk teas (Chinese don’t really drink hot coffee), meals, toys, etc, on different days. You can use your apps to order your free item (or purchase an item of course) so that when you arrive, it is ready to pick up and go .. you just walk around and pick stuff up.

Or you can order and it will be delivered to you. If you’re in a hotel, your order is put in a robot that delivers to your room. Like a country that sells its worst beer to the rest of the world, the quality is super impressive compared to what we know.

Food is delivered in thermal bags, with plastic gloves for your greasy chicken, and purchases are in beautiful boxes, that all get thrown away — it is not good for the environment for sure, but China has absolutely perfected playful consumerism.

What blew my mind the most. 🤯

The way I would sum up my whole experience,
is that China is a country without cynicism.

That is not a small thing. Consider for a moment how you feel about the world after watching the news. Consider now how you might feel if the focus in your country was all on what is going right.

Is that less true than a narrative focused on all that is going wrong?

The opposite of cynicism could be described as lack of skepticism. I teach critical thinking. Critical analysis in my view is extremely important. But lack of cynicism also means not looking for the negative, and not expecting things to go wrong.

When masses of people focus on the negative, and look at the world glass half empty, this must express itself in the physical environment around us.

When masses of people focus on the positive, and look at the world with a lens glass half full, this too must express itself in the physical environment.

I’m not sharing these observations to argue that China is better or worse than anywhere else. But what if every type of society has lessons to share?

I wouldn’t want my drug addict relative dumped on my doorstep every time he’s found, but I would like it if my parents or brother or sister would pick me up when needed without creating some big drama and me dreading to ask.

China simply reminds us once again of something I’ve been exploring with you throughout my articles and newsletters:

Inherited narratives are always incomplete.
Conditioning is not your inner truth.
Inner freedom requires us to peel away our rigid beliefs.

Travel is one way of doing that.

It invites curiosity. It softens certainty.

This not only applies to our opinions about countries, nationalities, religions — the other, but especially applies to how we judge our own lives and ourselves.

Building your castle — the life only you wish to build — requires questioning the map we were given. This is what my modality Freedom Hypnosis is all about ..

Peeling away beliefs about the world — or about yourself — that are stories you are following, but not really serving you, and not your inner truth.

When we stop turning outside ourselves for answers, then we are truly free.

For 9 years I’ve taught critical thinking each summer at a UK university.

This year the tutors received an email: “Due to declining international student numbers, there are no contracts.”

Just like that.

Right now I’m financially in a pickle and face a big unknown.

All over the world, Easter is a time for faith, family, friends, and celebration. But what is the deeper, inner meaning of this celebration?

In the Northern Hemisphere, Easter falls around the spring (vernal) equinox.
In the Southern Hemisphere, Easter aligns with the autumn (fall) equinox.

An equinox marks one of the two points in the year when day and night are exactly equal.

A moment of balance.

Spring (vernal)

In the North, this balance is symbolised by renewal.

The Anglo-Saxon goddess of rebirth Oestra (or Eostre) has roots in Germanic cultures. Until the 8th century, the month of April was known as Eosturmonath — a time for celebrating new life.

For Christians, Easter also represents resurrection — the return of light through Jesus.

Across a myriad of cultures and throughout history, spring has been honoured as a time of fertility, and new beginnings — a moment recognised for thousands of years, dating back at least to the Neolithic era.

Fall (autumnal)

In the Southern Hemisphere — in places like Australia, New Zealand, South America, and parts of Africa — this same moment in time carries a different expression.

Leaves fall.
Crops are gathered.

Balance here is symbolised by a time of reflection, integration, and release.
Of taking stock.

Of appreciation for what has been.
And appreciating what is here now.

Sometimes we feel steady and capable of weathering life on our own.
And sometimes it helps to have someone walk alongside us.

So how does this relate to our inner freedom?

Whether in the North or the South, these moments in the year that return to balance offer us the same invitation:

To let go of outside noise.
To pause.
To return to the present.

To allow the nervous system to regulate.
To realign.

To create space for renewal.

And from that quiet space within…
From our inner clarity.
It is an invitation to ask:

What is the current castle I am building?

Feeling into what is ready to be released…
and bringing to life what is birthing next for you.

Easter, Oestre, or Eostre is a moment that reflects an invitation for us all.

Some people see AI as the enemy. There is always new technology that causes push back. For me, AI is just a tool:

a) like the printing press, calculator, ATM cash machines, the SatNav, and the internet, these changed our jobs, our skillsets, and our thinking, but they are not inherently evil.

b) like email — once we discovered all our emails are scanned by providers — or laptops and mobile phones — that require us to accept data collection — we all use them.

BUT inner authority comes when we use these tools consciously.

Claude AI is an AI model (like ChatGPT) created by Anthropic.

Anthropic received a letter from the US Department of War confirming that “we have been designated as a supply chain risk to America’s national security.”

It applies to the use of Claude “as a direct part of contracts with the Department of War.”

Following the Secretary of War announcing a deal between the Pentagon and OpenAI, Anthropic states:

“We do not believe, and have never believed, that it is the role of Anthropic or any private company to be involved in operational decision-making—that is the role of the military.

We have tried in good faith to reach an agreement with the Department of War, making clear that we support all lawful uses of AI for national security aside from two exceptions..

autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance.”

Sometimes we feel steady and capable of weathering life’s storms on our own.
And sometimes it helps to have someone walk alongside us.

Food for thought and debate:

First, it suggests the US military is relying a lot on private companies for AI technology rather than their own internal systems.

Second, it reminds us that the integrity of a company can be supported by us (or not), eg. using companies that offer de-googled phones and encrypted email.

Third, it highlights the question: what are we using AI for? (tip: we can ask AI to give us an interpretation of our dreams which is very useful for personal development).

The military is using it to strategise “fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance.”

BUT if the military can strategise total world domination, AI can also be used to strategise total world liberation.

Interesting times. Interesting debate. The problem with AI is not AI. The technology is here. How we consciously choose to use it (or not) matters.

I read every message.

Recently I’ve been hearing a familiar set of phrases:

“The global system is collapsing.”
“A great awakening is happening.”

Whenever I hear this, I’m reminded of many moments in history that help put things in perspective.

The Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. The oil crises of the 1970s shook global economies.
The financial crash of 2008 seemed as though the entire economic system might unravel. And in 2020, the world suddenly shut down.

In each of these moments, many genuinely felt they were witnessing the end of the existing world order — and each moment also sparked calls for something new.

Nuclear anxiety, the Vietnam War, and distrust in governments helped fuel the counterculture movements of the 1960s. The global Occupy movement called for a fairer economic system. And 2020 sparked a global movement centred around freedom, autonomy, and choice.

Written in 1919 over 100 years ago, following the upheaval of the Russian Revolution and the devastation of the First World War, Irish poet William Butler Yeats wrote his famous poem The Second Coming.

He wrote:

“Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.”

The Second Coming traditionally refers to the return of Christ — what some today might call a rise in higher or awakened consciousness.

Yeats’ poem instead imagines the arrival of a darker new era, symbolised by the famous line describing “a rough beast… slouching towards Bethlehem” — a vision that, in hindsight, eerily echoed the turbulent period that led into the Second World War.

Yeats believed that history moves in cycles — periods of stability, upheaval, adaptation, and rebuilding.

I was reminded of this recently when a powerful storm hit the small village in Portugal where I’ve been living.

Trees were torn down.
Roads collapsed.
Electricity disappeared.
And yet something else happened too.

The people came together.

Which brings us to a quiet but important reflection.

It doesn’t mean the storms of history are insignificant.

But it reminds us that while the world will always weather the cycles of great storms, and events around us may feel unstable, there is a centre of stability that can always hold.

The one inside us.

This is why building your inner castle matters.

Not a castle built from reaction or fear, but one built on strong internal foundations — the ability to return to presence, to calm, and to trust your own inner guidance.

Because while we cannot control the storms of the world, we can strengthen the centre from which we respond to them.
And from that centre something interesting begins to happen.

Instead of reacting to every wave of news or uncertainty, we begin to sense a more empowering direction.

Not reacting to each moment…
but consciously shaping the trajectory of our life.

History will continue to move through cycles.
Systems will rise, strain, adapt, and change.

Yet the quality of our own lived experience depends far more on the state of our inner world than on the headlines of the day.

Even in the most extreme circumstances, human beings have shown an extraordinary capacity to hold strength, authenticity, and clarity within.

Viktor Frankl, who survived Auschwitz, famously observed that while everything can be taken, one thing always remains — the freedom to choose how one responds.

It is possible to stand, move, act and react from calm, presence, strength, and deep inner clarity.

So my invitation for simple reflection today:

When the outside world feels uncertain…
Where does your attention go first?

Into worry about what might happen next?

Or into the quiet yet strong centre of your own castle?

Inner authority can only come from within, not from external events, narratives, crises, or social pressure. Life becomes meaningful and joyful when we live from internal stability and direction.

Visualising your castle — what it is you wish to create — and then building it. Step by step.

For me, it begins with down-regulation.

We become so frantic in our minds about what we need to do next. But if we relax into life, the foundations of our castle — the walls, the turrets — begin to form almost without us needing to do much, except allow them to.

Not because we stop action, but because we stop forcing.

This is the difference between being and doing.

The great sages of our time and modern science agree: if we want peace, joy, and clarity, our focus must return to here. Now.

I have one of those adult colouring books. When I sit down and begin filling in the white shapes, I remember how I felt doing the same in childhood. When I was drawing or colouring as a child, my mind was fully present on the page in front of me.

As we grow older, there is so much outside of us that demands our attention. Children do not need to pay bills or cook dinner. 😊

As adults we of course have much more responsibility.

But meditation, I’ve learned, is not something you do for one hour a day or on a retreat. It’s gently re-teaching the mind. It’s the retraining of attention — to rest on what is happening in front of us right now.

Presence, and the peace and calm it brings, is not some esoteric dream. It’s neuroplasticity.

It’s reminding your nervous system that safety exists in this moment.

Sages and scientists further agree: planning is not the problem. Vision is not the problem. Action is not the problem.

The problem is frantic attachment.

Our mind can race out of control. When we move toward a goal from the heart, the nervous system is able to relax and soften. The mind becomes a tool, not a tyrant.

Your castle — the life you are imagining or already building — becomes a guiding light. It doesn’t pull you forward with anxiety. It draws you forward with quiet knowing.

From that place, you move steadily. Not because you’re hesitant, but steadily because you’re grounded. And most importantly, you have time to breathe, and to enjoy the show.

This is empowerment. This gives us deep meaning.

Anyone who has ever achieved anything that made them feel alive will tell you, “I felt it first”.

Doing is not the enemy.

Doing is simply movement.

But the direction — toward stress or toward expansion — depends on whether the movement comes from inner truth or mental panic.

When I was in Indonesia, I learned an expression: “pelan-pelan”.

It means relax. Take it easy. Go gently. Go with the flow.

Yet interestingly in English it sounds like “plan plan”.

That’s the balance.

Relax into now.
And move toward your vision.

The big picture — what your heart truly wants to build — can only be accessed from within. Your inner authority is not frantic. It is calm.

The mind, with everything it has learned, is a powerful tool.

But being is the foundation.

And from being, you build.

So my invitation for simple reflection today
is about your current castle:

Are you building from peace —
or from pressure?

Freedom comes when doing arises from presence.

I’ve been feeling excited to start a newsletter around Inner Authority vs Inherited Narratives this year.

Well something recently happened that felt like the right place to begin — a personal inner shift that’s been significant for me.

Many of you know that during Covid, while walking the Camino de Santiago, I had my only-ever lucid dream.

My subconscious said: “Stop travelling. Sometimes people need to stop talking about it and build their castle.”

That message eventually led me to a small village in central Portugal (above) — one with an actual castle on the top — where I settled, rented from a local family, and experienced something new for me: making a place feel like home.

Over time, that castle became what I call my “quiet zen man cave”. A small house at local rent in a quiet area with beautiful nature around and all the basics that I need to feel comfortable.

And then, on Tuesday 27th January, something shifted.

I realised — very clearly — that I want to travel again. Not a short trip, but my old nomadic way. Backpacking. Moving. Learning from change.

That very night, a storm hit central Portugal (👈 BBC) with winds up to 150km (95 miles) per hour.

Trees were torn out of the ground. Road signs bent. Parts of the village were badly damaged.

The next day there was no electricity, no phone signal, and no battery left in my laptop or phone. So I went out.

I spent the day at Mario’s — the local café — lit with an oil lamp, cash only, sitting with people I hadn’t really spent time with for months.

I’d been keeping to myself to stay healthy (the local pastime here being smoking and booze); the storm pulled me back into the warmth of the community. It was unexpectedly beautiful.

Later, I went to visit the castle.

Every entrance was bolted shut.

The castle was closed.

Whether you see that as symbolic or just a curious coincidence, it stopped me. It invited reflection.

What I realised is this:

Settling into a place, building community, making somewhere feel like home — that was my castle. I lived it. Fully.

Now that particular castle is complete.

But the deeper reminder was this:

Our real castle isn’t a place. It’s the life we’re living in alignment with our truth.

For some seasons, that truth looks like roots and familiarity.

For others, it looks like movement, curiosity, and change.

I am more of the second kind. I have gypsy (wanderlust, freedom, nonconformity) in my soul.

But both can be strong. Both can be playful. Both can be safe
(and play + strength + safety = a castle).

So right now, I prepare to leave — with a mix of feelings:

nervous, nostalgic, grateful, and excited — and now with a deeper sense of who I am than I had before.

So I would like to close with a simple reflection:

Is what you’re doing right now the building of your castle?

Or is it the moment when your next castle wants to be imagined?

It’s worth noting that the urge to travel again is not what’s important — it is the inner knowing that quietly arrives, without drama, justification, or urgency. That is how inner authority shows up: not as excitement, but as clarity.

My Girlfriend Left Me 💔

I wrote that for dramatic effect .. Well, kind of. It is true, but it’s not tragic.

Let me explain. Lucie went back to Czech Republic for a job. She told me that if she didn’t pursue this path, (of therapy work and training), she would regret it on her deathbed.

If you will regret not doing something on your deathbed, you have to do it! That is genuinely one of my life rules. Well, two you could say actually:

1) No regrets because everything just takes you to who you are, where you are and what you know right now. 2) You only have this one life (that we remember) and it is short and then it’s gone, so tick all those boxes and try and do and experience everything in it that you really want to while you’re here.

Because when someone is not following that authentic inner calling (call it inner knowing, passion, purpose, desire, intuition, spirit, soul), they are not happy.

Conscious Uncoupling 💕❓

In spiritual circles (especially in the influencer podcast realm), but also in some forms of therapy, when two people go different directions but support each other in that decision and don’t blame the other, it’s called a ‘conscious uncoupling’.

I’d say even more conscious is forgetting about the ‘uncoupling’ part. Just stay in touch, be friendly, and let things unfold. Nothing has to be decided.

Past relationships for me have typically ended with someone packing up and storming off. With drama. So trust me, this non-breakup is a big evolutionary step forward for me 😃, cause I now know how to do it .. and that it’s possible! 🤷

I do appreciate those who’ve said to me this is very inspiring, but I’d maintain my coming to a point of not judging or blaming the other person is, well, more just ‘a grown up thing to do’ than something ultra spiritual or super advanced. 😃

A Self-Care Bender 🍺 vs 🥗

So suddenly I found myself living on my own in my rented medium-sized flat (apartment) in central Portugal.

I decided not to go out on that typical ‘indefinite and unrestrained drinking period’ known in the UK as ‘going on a bender’, but instead made the focus on self-care.

I started going swimming every day, to the sauna, booking in a massage, and began my healthy keto again (keto is a topic I’ll write more about another time. My body loves being in ketosis, but I’m not saying it’s for everyone).

That lasted for a few weeks until I joined Lucie’s brother, his girlfriend, and my musician and sound healing friend Will who created these amazing songs, for some days down in Lagos in southern Portugal.

I really enjoyed being in the touristy part of Portugal - the nicer weather, the buildings and walkways all clean and renovated, and all types of restaurants, including some great Indian food again! 🍛 - but when I returned I couldn’t get back into that daily exercise and health routine. 🏋️💪

You ever had that experience of a sudden burst of energy and enthusiasm, giving something a full blown go for a few weeks, and then losing steam? 💭

Alone, Not Lonely 🌳🧘🏠

Instead, it occurred to me that I’ve spent my entire life either living in shared accommodation, with a partner together, in hotels, or in hostels.

I’ve lived an unconventionally nomadic life, and can honestly say that only once have I lived in my own place on my own - and that was only for about 3 months.

Even when I lived in that place (and incidentally also had a daily exercise and health routine 🏋️💪), I knew it was only temporary, so I can honestly also say I’ve never lived anywhere and tried to make it feel like home before.

So my focus has become making this place feel homely. 🌳🧘🏠

And it feels so cozy! - creating your own piece of Zen.

Again, this is my journey, and for you this may not be anything new, but do you remember how it feels when you do little things like move the rug where you want it or get some nice curtains or set up the lamps where you want them? 💭

Building Your Castle 🏰

'Sometimes people need to stop talking about it and build their castle' was the message I once received.

I am not suggesting that our castle is where we live. The point I’m making is that my home, my castle, is personal to me, and it’s constantly changing.

Your home, your happiness, your freedom, your castle 🏰 (choose your word for that which we all deep down seek), is also individual. It’s personal to you.

Me enjoying my alone time out and about exploring:

No one knows better than you what you need ⚡️✊

That’s a very powerful statement if we really pause, absorb its meaning, and follow it!

So to round up, going back to the beginning of this musing, just like Lucie, your own castle is built by following your own authentic inner calling.

Calling that what you will - inner knowing, expression, passion, purpose, desire, intuition, spirit, soul, source (so many words) - what is your castle?

What is your heart calling for you to do I genuinely wonder? And what are the limiting beliefs (programming/conditioning) getting in your way, or are you truly living your own authentic inner expression already? 💭

Follow the Heart 💟 Not the Head 🤯

Through my daily experience doing hypnotherapy, I have come to really understand at this point that the castle each of us is seeking is .. to actually experience what we deep down genuinely wish our life to be like.

Everything always seems to come back to this phrase:

We Free Ourselves Within

Your castle is built by your own authentic self. That is your freedom. That is what makes you fearless and free, and that can only be found at the core of you, in your own 'unconscious mind' (aka in your 'subconscious').

It’s Simple, Not Easy 🧘

As has been said for 1000s of years.

Because to be able to hear it, feel it, trust it, follow it, and let it guide us, we have to be able to get rid of the noise. 🤯

Our job then is to release any past conditioning, programming and events (any fear, doubt, trauma) that’s stopping us accessing our authentic expression.

Or .. we can change the flavour, so that noise doesn’t feel worth worrying about anymore .. because the life that you experience is literally a result of how you feel and what you imagine (I’ll dive into that more in another post).

Letting Go of Crap 💩

By letting go of the crap, we increase nervous system regulation, which is often called inner balance, but I personally like alignment or the word homeostasis.

Tuning In features six prominent channelers: Lee Carroll who started channeling Kryon in 1981, Shawn Randall who started channeling Torah in 1983, Darryl Anka who started channeling Bashar publicly in 1983, John Cali who started channeling Chief Joseph in 1992, Wendy Kennedy who started automatic writing in 1995 which led her to begin channeling the Pleiadian Collective, and Geoffrey Hope who started channeling Tobias back in 1997.

Today these channels have become famous within the growing and expanding popular realm of ‘conscious awakening’, with new videos being published online every day - such as those by the excellent The Next Level Soul Podcast - garnering hundreds of thousands and often millions of views.

But Tuning In by journalist and filmmaker David Thomas was released back in 2008 when channeling was still called spirit channeling and is the result of 10 years inquiry into the phenomenon that was still very much an unknown and also considered very controversial.

So let’s dive in ...

First, let me say I have masses of admiration for Alex Ferrari’s brilliant work building The Next Level Soul Podcast and getting the importance of topics like channeling out to the masses, but I also see a trap that many fall into when exploring topics like human consciousness and conscious awakening.

Just like exploring the rabbit holes of conspiracy, the exploration itself can become a never-ending addictive pastime.

e.g. knowing about the dark stuff going on in the world should be empowering, and not depressing. It means we can use this knowledge to make better choices, to step out of the rat race, and to choose the life we want to live!

The exact same can be said for exploring topics like channeling. The purpose is not to absorb endless content, but to take the messages and use them practically.

We can by all means watch new content on occasion for entertainment purposes (the latest messages from channels are definitely a lot better for us than watching TV), but what is so fascinating watching Tuning In is that the channeled messages today are exactly the same.

Latest Insights on Channeling

On his official 2008-2009 archived website, David Thomas writes that he brought together six channelers from the United States for the very first time “in order to gain insight into the phenomenon, as well as the information being received.”

In this section I’ll explain what insights we have into the phenomenon, and in the final section I’ll go into insights about the information being received.

Let me just remind those sceptical about hypnosis (my modality) that hypnosis is just the scientific word used to explain the path inwards.

Hypnosis is the process of moving from our usual state of conscious awareness into our subconscious to altered states of consciousness found within what psychologists call the ‘unconscious mind’.

This journey inwards has traditionally been considered a shamanic or spiritual path. For example, as David Thomas points out:

Today EEG readings show us how consciousness operates at different frequency levels, each associated with a different brainwave state, and the shamanic path within - or hypnosis - can now also be explained scientifically by understanding these frequencies, or brainwave states.

We go into the hypnotic theta brainwave state when we focus on the present and let go into our unconscious. We do this while awake, and also when we dream.

Scientific experiments shows that with continued practice going within, for example through meditation, we can shift from relaxed theta into a heightened state - the very high human brainwave state called gamma:

And we also know scientifically that we move into gamma when we are lucid dreaming (aware we are in a dream) - and when we are channeling:

In the film Tuning In Darryl Anka talks about learning to channel:

In these states, such as lucid dreaming or channeling, we are directly experiencing and accessing information from a much deeper and much more profound place of greater conscious awareness than our usual beta brainwave state from where we experience our reality most of the time (beta is the highly active thinking mind - or ‘monkey mind’ - as meditators call it).

Insights on Info Being Received

About his film Tuning In David Thomas continues: “the result is remarkable: across space and time it appears the entities are speaking as one, delivering a clear and profound message of empowerment for humankind.”

“The channeled material I have been delving into for years now is amazingly consistent: we are masters who have not quite realized it, we are powerful but limit ourselves with errant thought and action, this lifetime is more significant than most others we’ve had,” he adds.

But if there is one clear message that is “told to us again and again in different ways and voices” - as David Thomas adds in a 2014 update about his intended Tuning In Now sequel - do we need more channeled messages at all?

“It’s a legitimate question, and one I believe I can answer.” He elaborates:

I do agree the “scraping off centuries upon centuries of fear, faulty teaching and tar-like energy”, as David Thomas puts it, is indeed “a game of Russian nesting dolls with ourselves, going further and further, excising layer upon layer.”

I also agree that “In the process, sometimes jobs, relationships and ways of life fall by the wayside”, and I further agree that “it takes the gentle scrubbing (sometimes not so gentle) of wise channeled bristles to get the job done.”

But I strongly argue that these “wise channeled bristles” do not need to come from listening to ongoing messages from someone else - but rather from within you.

As Bashar says in the film Tuning In, “the whole point of guiding you is to actually teach you to be your own best guide.”

I refer back to the building blocks.

Imagine planet Earth below the blocks to be that core of you. The natural state of you - connected with your inner truth - and each block is a piece of conditioning, socialisation or programming that takes you away from that true essence of you.

‘The awakening’ process is becoming conscious of your unconscious beliefs and habits, clearing stored stress and trauma, removing physical and emotional pain and healing physical and emotional wounds. That is the “game of Russian nesting dolls with ourselves, going further and further, excising layer upon layer”.

Underneath it all at your core, you are re-connecting with the amazingness of who and what you truly are, your innate psychic abilities and your true free self.

This is why I emphasise that the Better Way and New Earth are not about us focusing on some new state or reaching something new ‘out there’. It’s about remembering our own true state of being - who we already truly are - inside.

Messages from Tuning In Within

Tuning In is my favourite video on channeling because it is raw and real, before the glamour of channeling today, and I would argue the only video anyone needs to watch to get that one “clear and profound message of empowerment” that is “told to us again and again in different ways and voices”.

After all, as Torah says in Tuning In, “How many aware people on the planet is it going to take that are able to put their awareness into their speech and into their actions before the collective consensus is affected. That is yet to be determined. No one knows exactly when and how that will happen.”

The film divides the channeled messages into chapters: The Law of Attraction, God, Victims, Soul, Horns and Halos (Jesus and Hitler), Life and Beyond, The Body, The New Consciousness and a section on The Channelers themselves.

Who is this for?

Freedom Unleashed Practices for Change is an edit combining both the benefits of the Wim Hof Method with the power of Tony Robbins’ Priming.

I put together this video and MP3 to provide something scientifically shown to help and benefit anyone - regardless whether you’re going through traumatic or difficult times, or you’d just like to see positive changes in your life.

For unless we are some Buddha, Jesus, or another such perfect soul who has cracked human suffering and discovered the ultimate limits of their reality, we can safely say our full potential here on Earth is still being realised.

The Science behind Freedom Unleashed Practices for Change

Self-hypnosis

Self-hypnosis (or auto-hypnosis) uses autosuggestion, which a 2022 review concludes can “effectively create changes within the body on a behavioral, cognitive and neural level.”

You are using Freedom Unleashed Practices for Change to essentially hypnotise yourself, or ‘suggest’ and unleash changes and new outcomes within your own subconscious to be initiated for you back within your physical reality and normal state of conscious awareness.

Hypnosis is the scientific word used to explain the path inwards from our usual state of conscious awareness into our subconscious to altered states of consciousness found within what psychologists call the ‘unconscious mind’.

When we carry out an activity that brings our focus to the present moment, we move into alpha brainwave activity and our thinking slows down which studies show “is especially effective for reducing anxiety, depression, and stress.”

The brainwaves change from alpha (present focus) into theta (the hypnotic state) once we relax, trust, surrender, let go, and/or ‘sink into’ the experience.

You are most deeply connected to your subconscious - or unconscious mind - once you ‘sink into’ theta. You are also in theta just before you sleep (called hypnagogia) and just after you wake up (called hypnopompia).

These are two natural times of the day when autosuggestion is most effective, but Freedom Unleashed Practices for Change is energising, so just after you wake up is best (when I do it).

From theta we can also shoot right back up into gamma brainwaves, but I will dive into that deeper below.

Wim Hof Breathing

The first 10 mins of Freedom Unleashed Practices for Change are the Wim Hof Method (WHM) led by Wim Hof.

The results of a 2013 study (published in 2014 and 2015) showed that people who practise the WHM are able to use breathing and mindset (or outcome expectancy optimism) techniques to voluntarily influence their autonomic nervous system (which regulates unconscious actions like body temperature and heart beat), control the fight or flight response, boost the immune system, combat severe illness, and become extraordinarily energised within only 10 days.

A 2018 brain imaging study found the WHM changes brain activity, activating pain modulation, as well as areas of the brain associated with self-reflection, internal focus and sustained attention in the presence of averse external stimuli.

A 2024 systematic review confirms the WHM reduces inflammation in healthy and non-healthy participants, helping with inflammatory illness.

Positive benefits of the WHM can be dramatically enhanced by following Freedom Unleashed Practices for Change with a daily cold shower, or some sort of cold immersion (eg. a dip in a river or lake - or even an ice bath!).

You can always start with spraying your feet with cold water daily, and build up to the whole body slowly from there.

Tony Robbins Priming

The final 20 minutes or second part of Freedom Unleashed Practices for Change is edited from two separate Priming sessions led by Tony Robbins.

Priming starts with rapid controlled breathing like the WHM, Tummo (inner heat) meditation, Pranayama (yogic breathing) or Holotropic Breathwork.

The purpose behind all these breathing techniques is to create physiological, energetic and frequency changes to access altered states of consciousness that enable healing to come from within the person practising the breathwork. It is often considered a more intense form of meditation.

We are in the hypnotic theta brainwave state when we focus and let go into the unconscious while we’re awake, and also when we dream. Science shows we move into the highest brainwave state - gamma - when we lucid dream.

Gamma is also the brainwave state we go into when channeling (which I will dive into in another article). Lucid dreaming and channeling are states when we feel we are directly accessing information from a greater conscious awareness.

There are many studies on Holotropic Breathwork, the hyperventilation practice developed by psychiatrists Stanislav and Christina Grof specifically as a psychotherapeutic technique to help people access this lucid altered state for deep emotional and psychological healing and personal growth without the need for psychedelics or plant medicine.

One 2015 study concluded benefits include “very beneficial temperament changes, which can have positive effects on development of character, measured as an increase in self-awareness.”

Two Stanford studies demonstrate that Robbins’ approach decreases negative emotions like depression and anxiety while also causing positive physiological, biochemical and psychological effects that create transformative lasting change.

HeartMath®

Priming also includes focusing on the heart with gratitude.

Decades of research shows that our hearts send more information to our brains than our brains send to our hearts, and research by the HeartMath Institute shows that this technique of intense focus on the heart with feelings of appreciation brings the heart into a perfect coherent rhythm and the person into a state termed psychophysiological coherence “because it is characterized by increased order and harmony in both our psychological (mental and emotional) and physiological (bodily) processes.”

Psychophysiological coherence is a state of optimal function.

Loving-kindness or Metta

Accumulating evidence from the last two decades suggests self-compassion is central to psychological well-being and reduced psychopathology symptoms.

Priming continues with sending out compassion to others. Known as metta meditation, or loving-kindness meditation, this practice activates the brain’s circuitry for empathy and deeply increases compassion within ourselves.

Further, it reduces individual feelings of isolation, anxiety and depression and increases social connectedness and positive emotions; a series of studies spanning decades also show loving focus can cause a “a stress-reducing and coherence-creating effect in society” including “decreased social violence.”

The theory in quantum physics of a field effect within collective consciousness implies that it is the unity of all individuals within a unified quantum vacuum that enables a “shift in our ordinary everyday worldview" from “a network of observers" to alter “the structure of physical reality itself.”

Self-healing and Law of Attraction

Priming also incorporates imagining self-healing, healing in others, and finishes with focusing on future goals and imagining them done.

The law of attraction is fundamentally a spiritual concept embedded in today’s quantum field theory. It asserts we exist within a unified field of consciousness and - as an individual consciousness - our thoughts, feelings and our focus affect life, emotions, health and events we experience within the field of consciousness.

A 2018 study shows practising law of attraction techniques self-heal, increasing our own feelings of gratitude and happiness. We all know our own belief can heal us physically too - it is called the placebo effect - and Forbes writes “many of us have already experienced the manifestation of something that we imagined.”

With distance healing studies shown to score better than hands-on healing studies, a study showing women who had been prayed for had nearly twice as high a pregnancy rate as those who had not been prayed for, the idea that law of attraction is hocus-pocus spiritual nonsense is fading with each new study:

Although the very consideration of such a possibility may appear scientifically bizarre, it cannot be denied that, across the planet, people pray for health and for relief of symptoms in times of sickness. Healing through prayer, healing through religious rituals, healing at places of pilgrimage and healing through related forms of intervention are well-established traditions in many religions.

“The ancient wisdom of the world’s philosophies and religions as expressed in prayer and meditation can now be scientifically verified and understood physiologically,” writes David B. Dillard-Wright for Psychology Today.

In his 2012 article for Frontiers in Human Neuroscience: because “changes in consciousness accommodated by neural correlates and plasticity of the brain advance a model of perceptual change.”

Neuroplasticity

Neuroscientist Dr. Tara Swart explains the law of attraction, or manifesting change, from the perspective of neuroplasticity:

Also known as brain plasticity or neural plasticity, it is the ability of the brain to adapt, grow, change and heal itself by repeatedly sending it new messages.

Until recently, neuroscientists assumed the brain didn’t or couldn’t change once we reached a certain age. But we create new connections between our neurons.

We rewire our brains by having new experiences, building new skills and affirming to ourselves new stories. The whole Freedom Unleashed Practices for Change is a self-hypnosis exercise in rewiring the brain.

“[Your brain] is constantly changing. You can participate in that process. This means that things are not permanent as we once thought and also that you can heal trauma,” says Dr Louise Hansen.

Science at all levels is rapidly explaining what spiritual teachers have been claiming for 1000 of years because we are all being pulled rapidly into a greater awareness of the fact that everything is connected, we are responsible for our individual and collective experience of reality, and we access change within.

In order to do that, we need to feel present, balanced energised and motivated.

I enjoy part-time video editing when the mood arises, and when I have a message to share. Above is a film I created back in 2016.

The purpose of the film was to make the audience ‘aware of the extent to which we are unaware’ that we are being unconsciously manipulated by our media - and to really hammer home a serious argument for turning off the TV as a realistic solution.

The film takes us on an in depth journey through how the human mind is being shaped using psychological techniques to tap into our emotions - our deepest wants, fears and desires - in order to influence our behaviours and beliefs.

The film also shows how news media deliberately manufacture propaganda.

And this all back in 2016 before today’s food, energy and fuel crises, and before the most controlled narrative and crisis of them all - Covid.

I like this as a thought exercise: what crisis would there have been during Covid if people had not been watching TV? Think about that. The power the TV has!

I have long said that turning off the TV is truly the most powerful thing we could all do collectively to create positive change on the planet.

It was more of a ‘what if’ dream solution - because I never dreamt that AI would become the technology that could make that dream a reality.

Did anyone else notice that at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024 there was a coincidental and sudden release of AI on the global population?

Features like AI Copilot for Microsoft Bing and AI Companion for Zoom were suddenly added without any warning.

And now anyone anywhere can create text, audio and video content that is realistically authentic yet completely AI generated.

The new text to video AI technology:

With turning off the TV, I used to mean ‘tuning out of the mainstream narrative’.

But very soon we will no longer be able to know what media anywhere is human produced, and what is AI generated.

Here’s a very interesting interview with deepfake Tom Cruise aka Miles Fisher:

At the same time, we have big name celebrities sharing alternative media narratives like this one to millions of people around the globe:

And we have growing paranoia about these big name celebrities too.

This is understandable when we can no longer trust our own eyes, and though I’m not personally worried whether Russell Brand, Tucker Carlson, Jimmy Dore, Joe Rogan and Elon Musk are ‘controlled opposition’ or not, we can ask ourselves what watching a video entitled ‘Tucker Just Dropped A BOMBSHELL And It's TERRIFYING’ is supposed to make us feel - terrified perhaps?

My film did not go into social media. But we are saturated with TiKTok style media feeds and channels where we can scroll endless hours of ‘doom porn’ or ‘fear porn’ (as it’s now called) in both the mainstream and alternative spaces.

And much of that content in all these spaces is with dubious sources, no sources or little corroboration.

My film shows media as a whole is making people more stressed, fearful, polarised, racist, sexist, violent and even abusive, which in turn increases depressive illness, human cruelty and environmental destruction through needless consumption and war.

Whoa! 🤯

But everything has a glass half full or a glass half empty perspective.

So as we are encouraged to embrace AI, are we willingly going to give our ability to ground ourselves in what is real or not completely away?

What if AI is the technology that pushes humanity to face that question? What if AI is the catalyst that causes masses of people to really see, like snapping out of the Matrix, that media is a narrative, a story, a creative expression - nothing more - and ultimately a distraction.

Films, books, podcasts, music can inspire us, move us and teach us a lot - which is great! But the point is: how often are we consuming media to appease feelings of boredom, unhappiness or discontent within ourselves?

Consciousness expansion content is just the same. Gaia TV is surely better for us than Netflix but how many videos do we need to watch about freedom is within us before we turn our focus inwards.

In my previous article I wrote about the building blocks..

Imagine planet Earth below the blocks to be that core of you. The natural state of you - connected with your inner truth - and each block is a piece of conditioning, socialisation or programming that takes you away from that true essence of you.

‘The awakening’ process is becoming conscious of your unconscious beliefs and habits, clearing stored stress and trauma, removing physical and emotional pain and healing physical and emotional wounds. It’s peeling off the onion layers.

It means spending time with yourself, expressing your creativity, getting into nature, and having fun.

It means listening to your intuition and letting the inner child come out play.

It means taking care of yourself and making time for downtime, relax time - a bath, sauna or massage.

It means connecting with those who help your light to shine.

It means self-love - your own oxygen mask comes first.

Underneath it all at your core, you are re-connecting with the amazingness of who and what you truly are, your innate super powers, and your true free self.

AI could be that force required to really get us all to stop turning to the external for answers and to instead take the time to get to know and learn to trust who we truly are.

As we know ourselves at the unconscious level, we are guided and we are kept safe, and then we simply say no when we need to.

For the activists, the system and those running the show do not want that.

So food for thought: do you give your understanding of what’s truth and what’s fiction away, or do you feel the calling to choose your own sovereignty?

Your own sovereignty means learning to trust you that no one knows better than you what’s best for you.

Because you're the one you’re waiting for. You free yourself within.

When I was a child I saw dead people.

Believe it or not, I grew up around ghosts. I had an old man hanging out in my room who would sit on the end of my bed protecting me until I fell asleep and who my mum would hear walking around in my room while I slept.

There was also a cat that would purr next to my bed while I dozed off. It also lay on my bed sometimes. I could feel the weight difference, but we didn’t actually have a cat. There was no cat there.

A recent YouGov poll conducted in 2022 reports that over 67% or two-thirds of Americans believe that they have had at least one paranormal experience in their lifetime (Orth, 2022).

In this post I invite us to dive into the topic of psychic abilities, a gene in our own DNA that signals psychic abilities, why we lose them and where they go.

So let’s dive in ...

Another experience I remember vividly was my first day at comprehensive (high) school aged eleven. I picked up my friend at his house on the way and heard a dog barking upstairs. I went running up to meet the dog and there was no dog there.

I came down and told my friend’s mum what I heard. I saw her look at her son and then at me. She told me they hear it too. I told her about the guy and cat in my room, and she looked .. relieved, and it felt good for me too - for the first time in my life people outside of my family acknowledging this is real. 

My experiences stopped when I was 16 years old. I was at another friend’s house when we saw things moving around by themselves - a poltergeist - and this one scared the living daylights out of me.

Looking back now, it was a deceased child wishing to play (for another time).

The point is that at the time, I had no idea how to handle it. I returned home so shaken up that my mum phoned the family to find out “what the hell is going on!” and I decided I didn’t really want this ‘gift’ any more.

Cultural, societal and religious pressure

My grandma read tea leaves. She told my mum as a child that our family had ‘the gift’. My mum also experienced many strange and wonderful things growing up, with one particularly funny and sad ghost story I would also love to share some time. But these experiences were not wonderful for her.

My mum told me she was scared and decided she didn’t want to learn how to use ‘the gift’. So the knowledge how to handle it died with my grandma.

And then came my own desire to stuff away this ability that did not seem to be helping me function in society; so it faded away, as I focused instead on what I was told is important in life – things like algebra.

In fact, I was literally told by my school to turn away. Once we had an assembly - when the headmaster stood before the whole school - because “Someone” (me), “has been reported by the librarian for taking out books on Ouija boards, exorcism and such topics.”

The school was Church of England. We were all warned about evil spirits and meddling with dark energies. Why they had the books available in the first place is beyond me, but I got to read them.

Science behind the suppression

In 2021, the Institute for Noetic Science published a pilot study; the first of its kind; looking to see if psychic ability is an inherited trait.

They compared the DNA of the psychics with a control group and found that the psychic group retained their original DNA signature, whereas the control had a gene alteration on chromosome 7 in the TNRC18 gene.

Ann Stone, Professor of Psychology & Consciousness Studies, explains:

The alteration in the chromosome 7 TNRC18 gene mutated the trinucleotide non-coding gene from a homozygous GG to a heterozygous GA sequence.

Individuals with the GA alteration did not possess any psychic ability. Those with the GG sequence were those with documented psychic ability. Their findings now brought into question why the alteration of the gene led to psychic suppression.

Eleanor Criswell, former chair of the psychology department at Sonoma State University, founding Director of the Humanistic Psychology Institute (now Saybrook University) and an Institutional Review Board (IRB) member for the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) explains:

So what does this mean? The purpose of the study was to see if there was a biological marker in participants reporting psychic ability. The results actually pointed towards the opposite conclusion, that those with this particular genetic mutation did not exhibit psychic capacity. So, the absence of variance in a particular gene might be important for maintenance of innate psychic capacities. Pondering this, I suddenly had a hunch that since this gene (called TNRC18) was inherited, perhaps mutations related to the expression of that gene may act to suppress psychic experiences.

This is known as epigenetics. The science that our environment, conditioning, socialisation and programming change our DNA.

Criswell expands:

I believe that psychic abilities are natural experiences. Children sometimes show evidence of psychic ability in early childhood, but it often subsides as they develop. In some cases this may happen because they are taught by parents and society to not trust their psychic experiences, or to not talk about them for fear of being labeled “strange.”

“Perhaps there is an evolutionary pressure to suppress strong psychic abilities, or perhaps they have atrophied,” Criswell adds:

The role of the early Catholic church may also have been a cultural factor in the suppression of psychic abilities. Independent spiritual practices, which likely included psychic abilities, were discouraged (to put it mildly). Somewhere in the mix .. is also the fear of unknown “powers,” which is a trope that is endlessly exploited in novels, movies, and television shows. Based on these pressures, it is not surprising that some parents may train their children to suppress their psychic experiences.

In other words, as Stone puts it:

“what if, due to evolutionary, cultural, societal, and religious pressures, over time, we learned to suppress this ability to the point of shutting it down at the molecular level?”

Freeing our Super Powers

As Stone says, “we learned to suppress this ability”, so in other words we are the ones suppressing it, as our conditioning causes us to suppress our own ability.

It seems very logical to me then that these gifts lie ready to be re-activated within our own programming in our own subconscious - or ‘unconscious mind’.

The terms 'subconscious' and 'unconscious' are often used interchangeably. In psychology though there is a difference. The 'subconscious mind' is anything happening within us (in ‘the mind’) that is just below our level of awareness and contains thoughts, feelings and memories that are not currently in use but can easily be retrieved when needed.

The 'unconscious mind' is the hidden part of ‘the mind’ that we are not aware of, we cannot access directly from our normal every day state of consciousness and awareness, and contains our repressed memories, limiting beliefs, unhealthy behaviour patterns, fears and traumas

Hypnosis is the scientific word used to explain the path inwards from our usual state of conscious awareness into our subconscious to altered states of consciousness found within what psychologists call the ‘unconscious mind’.

When we start to ‘wake up’ from our inherited narratives, and start to peel away the onion layers of what we have been taught to believe about ourselves and the world, we are getting closer and closer to who we truly are at the centre of our onion - the core of you.

I like to imagine building blocks.

Imagine planet Earth below the blocks to be that core of you. The natural state of you - connected with nature, the universe, life, creation - who you truly are.

Each block is a piece of trauma - a piece of conditioning, socialisation or programming that takes you further away from the true essence of you.

‘The awakening’ is processing our unhealthy beliefs and habits, clearing internally stored stress, removing physical and emotional pain, reframing traumatic events, and healing physical and emotional wounds.

Underneath it all, we are re-connecting with the amazingness of who and what we truly are, and our innate super powers, including our suppressed psychic abilities waiting within.

This is why I emphasise that the Better Way or New Earth are not about us reaching some new state of being or reaching somewhere new. It’s about remembering our true state of being and who we already truly are.

Ultimately we have to look within.

Many of us remember ‘gifts’ we seemed to have when we were young: imaginary friends, lucid dreams, astral travel, premonitions, etc. I even have a friend who told me as a kid that she focused on floating and remembers levitating for fun. She acknowledges that it may only have been her imagination.

Although it may initially cause some internal resistance to hear, freedom is not really about external circumstances at all, but an inner journey.

The solution is freedom, but freedom comes when we learn how to let go of our limiting beliefs, and show up as the example of the world we would like to live in.

As much as many don't like to believe it, the science clearly shows focusing on love, solutions and the positive is what ends mass formation and creates that better or ideal world we all welcome.

Barbara Fredrickson, an award winning social psychologist and Director of the Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Laboratory at Carolina University at Chapel Hill, has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles on positive emotions, demonstrating how a positive mindset repairs people’s overall mental and physical health, and corrects, restores, and undoes the many detrimental mental and physiological effects of negativity bias - or focusing on negativity.

For decades her research has shown how positive emotions “share the feature of broadening an individual’s momentary thought–action repertoire" but also “share the feature of building the individual’s personal resources, ranging from physical resources to intellectual resources to social resources."

In other words, inner positivity enhances people mentally, physically and socially.

Studies also show positive emotions increase general longevity (i.e. we live longer) and decrease the likelihood of developing any disease, including heart issues.

"If you are by nature a cheerful person and look on the bright side of things, you are more likely to be protected from cardiac events," says study leader Lisa R. Yanek:

"People who had a positive outlook were one-third less likely to have a heart attack or other cardiovascular event within five to 25 years than those with a more negative outlook."

The belief in a positive outcome literally heals us (placebo effect), and the belief in a negative outcome literally makes us ill (nocebo effect).

"The placebo effect can do things that are apparent miracles," Dr. Campbell explains, and "there is a placebo or nocebo effect in absolutely everything."

A study in Psychological Science explains people who experience upbeat emotions make more social connections, and this in turn improves physical health:

"Results suggest that positive emotions, positive social connections, and physical health influence one another in a self-sustaining upward-spiral dynamic."

"People tend to liken their emotions to the weather, viewing them as uncontrollable," says Fredrickson, but, she continues:

"This research shows not only that our emotions are controllable, but also that we can take the reins of our daily emotions and steer ourselves toward better physical health."

Our tendency to focus on the negative (negativity bias) can thus be retrained, and research shows one way to nurture that positive mindset is to read constructive, solutions-focused news which leaves us inspired, optimistic, and willing to meet opposing views, and with stronger intentions to engage in pro-social behaviours (i.e. to engage in the world positively and constructively).

Community at CPN

CPN quickly became a global network of conscious (awake and aware) people who are choosing to focus on solutions - not problems - and do the inner work.

CPN's activities expanded to also include free online support sessions given by a group of volunteer mentors. Each mentor offering his or her own speciality to help people dealing with the stresses of these unprecedented times.

The CPN community could also interact not just with each other but also with the mentors, and I have read and responded to the chat comments since CPN’s inception, where - I might add - subscribers have gratefully expressed feeling supported and held by the CPN team in these difficult times.

Covid Positive News was renamed the Conscious People's Network on March 20th 2023 to reflect the necessary shift and transition away from COVID to real inner solutions that lead to freedom.

My words from the aforementioned Frontline News article:

“The idea behind CPN has always been organic and changing with the global situation and with the vision and goal of the CPN mentors and my own intuition. CPN has become a network for conscious people, people who are awake and aware to the fact that the world is not the way we have been told it is. CPN will become a place where all those people doing great things can share what they do because this is not about hierarchy and this is not about one group or person. This is about all of us.”

The word 'conscious' means "having knowledge of something" and being "aware of and responding to one's surroundings."

CPN has indeed become a Conscious People's Network for awakening and consciousness expansion, but - as we move beyond the events of COVID - is no longer a global community formed for ‘the famous and non-famous in the truth/freedom movement’ but for people ready looking for freedom within themselves.

Right now the global majority are peeling away those onion layers but for the activists, part of what we begin to discover as we peel away our programming is the feeling and inner knowing that we are all one. We know this intellectually thanks to quantum physics, but no one wants to hurt or harm others when we begin to feel that Golden Rule ‘what we do unto others we do unto ourselves’, only to love, help others, serve, optimally act and positively contribute, so that doom scenarios diminish and the future turns out positive.

After all, we live in a quantum gravitational universe with “a globally agreed-upon cognitive model" of reality and the “Observers ultimately define the structure of physical reality itself," explains Dr. Robert Lanza.

To create a positive world, we need a “profound shift in our ordinary everyday worldview" from “a network of observers," he continues.

In other words, if we can nurture and develop a positive mindset, believe in and focus on a positive outcome — collectively as a network, this will become reality.

So whatever phase you are in on this journey, whether realising the reality you once thought was true is crumbling, or discovering the truth of who you are at your essence in the core of your onion, reclaiming your health and power and strength, or exploring how you personally can contribute to a better reality here on Earth, CPN is for you!

So let’s dive in ...

Within the scientific and cultural discussion, there is a lot of research today about the healing power of inner interventions such as mindfulness, meditation, and even naturally-derived hallucinogenic compounds such as DMT and psilocybin.

However, get ready to dive pretty deep into the most exciting, misunderstood and overlooked of them all - the amazing healing power of hypnosis!

The History of Hypnosis

Nearly all ancient cultures - including the Sumerian, Persian, Chinese, Indian, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman - had shamans, priests or practitioners employing hypnosis for healing, and the use of hypnosis healing techniques is common in native and indigenous cultures all over the world today, from the healing practices of Southern Africa to Native North American ceremony

By the 18th century, enough doctors, surgeons, psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists were working with hypnosis that in 1892 the British Medical Association (BMA) unanimously endorsed the therapeutic use of hypnosis (the point here being that the use of hypnosis to help people heal is not new).

In 1845, Scottish surgeon James Esdaile became a notable figure for his painless surgical procedures on the battlefields of India using hypnosis. At the beginning of the 20th century, French psychologist Émile Coué developed the concept of autosuggestion, a hypnosis technique making use of what we now call placebo effect, and American psychiatrist Milton Erickson, specialising in medical hypnosis, founded the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) in 1957.

The UK National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Hypnotherapy were published in 2002, and a 2016 Stanford study provided the modern day scientific acknowledgment that hypnosis causes physical changes in the brain that enable “enhanced somatic and emotional control”.

It has taken time for science to catch up with what ancient cultures have accepted as common practice for 1000s of years, but many incredible and powerful medical and therapeutic benefits of hypnosis are now fully acknowledged within modern science, and its amazing potential for inner healing continues to be explored

What Hypnosis Actually Is

The biggest hindrance to the modern acceptance of the immense healing power of hypnosis is the myths and misconceptions about what hypnosis is that have “(a) fostered a skewed and stereotyped view of hypnosis among the lay public, (b) discouraged participant involvement in potentially helpful hypnotic interventions, and (c) impeded the exploration and application of hypnosis in scientific and practitioner communities.”

It is not surprising that modern day society is finding it difficult to embrace what hypnosis actually is and the many healing benefits associated with it. Why?

Hypnosis is the scientific word used to explain the path inwards from our usual state of conscious awareness into our subconscious to altered states of consciousness found within what psychologists call the ‘unconscious mind’.

This has traditionally been considered a shamanic or spiritual path, but EEG readings now show how consciousness operates at different frequency levels, each associated with a different brain state, and hypnosis can be understood scientifically by understanding these frequencies, or brainwave states.

The typical frequency of awareness (consciousness) for almost all humans on the planet is the Beta brainwave state. This is the highly active thinking mind - or ‘monkey mind’ as meditators call it - where most of us live almost all of the time.

The part of the brain that lights up in brain scans when we are in this state of awareness is called the Default Mode Network (DMN).

The issue with living in the Beta state is negativity bias. Humans spend most of our time ruminating about past regrets or worrying about future outcomes.

Yet when we carry out any activity that brings our focus to the present moment, our brainwaves slow down, we move into Alpha brainwave activity, and we go into a state of conscious awareness that shuts our Default Mode Network down.

Unsurprisingly then, this is why studies show regular training to stay focused on the present moment and out of thinking has many positive psychological effects, and “is especially effective for reducing anxiety, depression, and stress”.

But when the human brain moves from Beta (thinking) into Alpha (present focus) and then into Theta (which is the dream-like state between awake and Delta - which is deep sleep), we enter what is known as the hypnotic state because we become deeply connected to our own subconscious - or our ‘unconscious mind’.

We know this to be true because we are in Theta when we dream, or when we are driving and notice that we drifted off and our subconscious took over for a while.

Also called hypnagogia (the natural state you are in just before you sleep) or hypnopompia (the natural state you are in just after you wake up), you go in and out of Theta regularly throughout the day.

To change frequency from Alpha into the hypnotic state, where healing with hypnosis becomes most effective, requires the participant to relax, trust, surrender, let go, and/or ‘sink into’ the Theta experience.

“the changes in consciousness induced by drinking ayahuasca are comparable to other states of deep relaxation and increased subconscious awareness, such as the meditative, the hypnotic and the hypnagogic states which are all characterized by increased theta activity in the EEG" (Hoffmann et al, 2001).

This experience can be described as ‘psychedelic’ because, as we deepen our awareness in this usually unconscious Theta frequency, our conscious experience of what is happening within us becomes very visual, auditory and kinaesthetic.

It’s here that our deepest unhealthy patterns, fears and traumas can be let free, as well as our deepest desires. It is literally the holder of and gateway to our dreams.

The Benefits of Hypnosis

In our modern day technological and scientific world, the qualified individual facilitating the hypnosis session can do so with you in person or online, and the therapeutic practice is called hypnotherapy or, sometimes, clinical hypnosis.

Guided recorded instructions can also be very powerful, but not as powerful as an effective face-to-face session where the hypnotherapist should be reacting to and working with what is coming up personally for you.

Traditionally, for example, a hypnotherapist uses a script to guide the session, which is the same script for each person coming to them with that issue.

But in the hypnotic state, your own subconscious can communicate with itself, the person in hypnosis (you), and with the guide (the therapist) if present.

Parts work, for example, is a well established modality in which different parts of your own subconscious can communicate with each other, with you, and with the therapist, to end unhealthy patterns, addictive behaviours, resolve issues, and to overcome past trauma.

Recent meta-analyses, systematic reviews and randomised control trials confirm hypnosis is effective at treating PTSD, clinical pain, procedural and chronic pain, depression, anxiety, phobias, irritable bowl syndrome (IBS), acute and chronic insomnia, can accelerate weight loss and postoperative wound healing, improve the childbirth experience, and induces analgesia during surgical procedures.

Hypnosis is about your own subconscious reminding you of your own power. You can change unhealthy habits, clear internally stored stress, remove physical pain, reframe traumatic events, increase self-love, and even heal physical wounds.

Hypnosis is all about you helping and healing you. I will dive more into the amazing modalities (eg. what is past lives?) and possibilities with hypnosis in future posts, but if you are curious now then take a look at my approach.

What Hypnosis Is Not

Perhaps the two most damaging myths and misconceptions about hypnosis are that 1) hypnosis is dangerous, or 2) that hypnosis is mind control.

1) Hypnosis is not dangerous.

You cannot get stuck in hypnosis, and you are aware and conscious throughout the experience.

You are in the hypnotic ‘trance’ every time you are focused on TV, your phone, computer screens, reading, painting, dancing, driving, or ‘in the zone’ (eg. when doing a sport or playing music) and time and other events exit your awareness.

2) Hypnosis is not mind control.

If you do not want to be hypnotised, you won’t be. If you resist, it will not work. If you don’t like it, you ‘come back’ and return to Beta any time - just open your eyes.

You’re in total control. You cannot be ‘programmed’ while in hypnosis to carry out or assimilate any somatic or emotional change if you are not willing to do so.

Empowered Hypnosis

When you know what hypnosis is, you are extremely empowered. The danger associated with hypnosis is not hypnosis itself, but rather to do with you not knowing you’re going into hypnosis, or willingly going into hypnosis but underappreciating the power of hypnosis, thus disempowering yourself.

Consumer psychology and mass formation (also sometimes referred to as mass hypnosis or mass psychosis), for example, are not hypnosis, but they can use hypnosis as a tool to manipulate your behaviour - if you let them.

Think about this for a moment. An advertisement during the 2023 Super Bowl cost $7 million for 30 seconds. Why? Because when 115 million Americans are focused on TV and ‘sinking into’ the show, they are going into hypnosis and willingly allow those commercials to go directly into their subconscious.

Mass formation is another technique making use of hypnosis (used by authorities to control the behaviour of masses of people). The TV/media provide an external threat (think Covid-19), and the masses willingly allow the authorities to create havoc in their subconscious by ‘sinking into’ and focusing on that angst-evoking threat. People will then follow any provided solution just to relieve their angst.

Also bear in mind that every form of media and piece of information that you’re focused on, while absorbed in, is shaping who you are.

However, remember that a) hypnosis only works when you willingly allow it to so b) when you know how it works you can choose to accept or reject the process.

Just say to yourself, ‘Okay, I’m about to focus on and get really absorbed in this - what are the messages it is giving me? Are they empowering messages?’

Understanding what hypnosis is is extremely empowering because hypnosis can be used to trick and enslave you - or YOU can use hypnosis to set YOU free.

Freedom Hypnosis

"With the State Surgeon General saying one thing and the FDA saying another, health providers are left stuck in the middle." ~ Dr Michael Sparks.

In other words, "I don't know which authority to listen to when making my own decisions."

We are free when we follow our own inner truth - our own inner guidance system - without fear of judgement or consequence.

It's our fears and limiting beliefs of 'little me' that keep us feeling enslaved. They are a result of past traumatic experiences. They're our socialisation, conditioning, and programming.

The healing power of hypnosis expands to even greater possibilities when we invite your subconscious to do the healing with you, and guide you on a journey to understand how you can be in best alignment in your life moving forward.

Believing in and trusting your own inner ability to decide what is right and what is wrong for you, Freedom Hypnosis means re-discovering that essence within you at the core of your being before your conditioning.

That essence of who you are has many names - your soul, spirit, consciousness, Higher Self, inner knowing - or simply put, intuition.

The more you peel away the layers of what you have been taught to believe about yourself and the world and connect to that, the more you’re kept safe, the more mentally and physically healthy you become, the more you discover your own personal purpose or mission, and the freer you feel.

You also begin to re-connect with abilities lying dormant and supressed within your very own personal onion of conditioning, and part of what you experience there is the feeling we're all connected and we're all one.

Hypnosis ultimately enables you to re-discover your highest inner truth - freedom.

In this post I invite us to dive into the topic of ‘freedom’, what it really means to be free, and where we can find it. What if freedom is never out there?

Before we do, let me first thank you for being patient. You may have noticed I haven’t published anything here since August 10th.

In this post I will explain why, and the reason is linked to the topic of freedom.

So let’s dive in ...

On September 1st my girlfriend and I packed our stuff into my trusty 500 Euro 1994 Opel Corsa and set off on our road trip from České Budějovice (our home for the last 9 months in Czech Republic) to Faro in our new home - Portugal.

The day we left was the last day of my summer job teaching critical thinking at a UK university, and I put a pause on all my Freedom Hypnosis sessions.

We had a fantastic 1 week adventure travelling through 5 countries - Czech Republic, Germany, France and Spain into Portugal:

From Faro, we explored the beaches around southern Portugal for another week, flew from Faro to Nottingham in England for a further week (to visit my family), then drove to our new accommodation in central Portugal where we explored the surrounding area for 3 weeks, visited friends in northern Portugal (where we lived before Czechia) for another week, and entertained visitors for a final week.

Today is 8 weeks on the dot since we left.

Now, the thing is that before we left, I had been spending all day every day online - running the Telegram channel, doing sessions, and teaching for the uni.

My lifestyle since launching Covid Positive News in January 2022 consisted of getting up, turning on the laptop, time passing far too quickly, and going to bed.

Maybe some of you can resonate with this summary of my typical day?

Of course I took breaks and had occasional days off, but I can honestly say that it was not enough - and it was not healthy. I noticed my shoulders starting to ache, my belly getting fat, and my eyesight deteriorating.

Maybe, like me, those of you who spend your days on a computer - whether for work or pleasure - have also noticed similar things?

Luckily for me, I had a fairly recent alternative memory to compare this to.

For those who don’t know, and I won’t go into detail here about my life prior to Covid, but needless to say I had a very different lifestyle pre-Covid.

I travelled a lot; I walked a lot; I was in nature a lot; and when I taught and gave sessions it was in person.

So now we get to it. When I closed that laptop and set off in that car, I felt free!

That feeling of freedom was so strong that I had absolutely zero desire to open my laptop or open any apps on my phone. I wanted to enjoy this feeling again!

Except for maps, I didn’t use my phone for the whole 8 weeks. Except for booking plane tickets to England, I didn’t use my laptop.

And instead of my mind focusing on what I needed to do online, I woke up each morning focused only on the physical environment around me.

My focus was on the tent that needed packing, where we were going to get lunch, the river, lake or ocean we wanted to swim in, or the walk we wanted to do.

I went from using tech and being online every day - all day - to an almost entire digital detox. And I felt I could breathe again.

So this got me reflecting on what exactly is freedom?

Perhaps now you think I’m going to suggest freedom is about being offline or being in nature or having enough money to not have to work.

I’m not. I believe it goes much deeper than that!

We all want a world in which we're allowed to be, think, do and act how we want, right? (as long as we’re not intentionally causing harm to others of course).

That is what all these amazing communities, organisations and individuals working towards creating a better world are all about, and that’s great!

Also, the whole world now knows what it feels like to be told you can’t travel, or go to a restaurant or café, or visit relatives or friends, or even leave your home, for fear of being punished. Everyone got a taste of what it feels like to be in prison.

But although it may initially seem wrong to say so, considering what I’ve just described and the type of world we live in, I’d like to explore the idea that we don't actually need anything 'out there' to change first - because freedom is not really about external circumstances at all.

Let’s take Covid as an example. Many suffered during Covid of course, and of course many are still suffering now. But it is also true that others didn’t.

You may know someone who enjoyed not having to go to work. Someone who enjoyed being able to spend more time with family. Someone who enjoyed exploring new hobbies. Maybe you were one of those people?

Coming back to my own experience, I have had the privilege of personally getting to know people from many different backgrounds in many different countries, and I can say with absolute certainty that there are people out there who, for all intents and purposes, from an external perspective are not free (eg. cannot travel, live on the streets, etc) yet they feel free.

Now I want to take a more extreme example, but nevertheless an important one. Because for thousands of years there are people who have claimed they have found their way to liberation - to freedom.

Many describe how they found freedom in their darkest hour - while homeless, in prison, during time of war - at the absolute darkest of times.

We often use the term ‘enlightened’ to describe such people, and unless all these people are lying, we have to acknowledge how they feel is also possible for us too.

So this is why I conclude freedom is a feeling. We feel free.

Here is my current attempt at a definition of freedom:

The title of my Substack gives away the fact that I believe we free ourselves within.

We are free when we follow our own inner truth, our own inner guidance system, our highest excitement, which has many names - your soul, spirit, consciousness, Higher Self, inner knowing - or simply put, intuition.

People who feel free follow that, and are not afraid of what people out there think about them (including governments) and are not afraid of consequence.

Or they feel the fear and do it anyway.

When we start to ‘wake up’ or peel away the onion layers of what we have been taught to believe about ourselves and the world, we get closer and closer to who we truly are at the centre of our onion.

It's our fears and limiting beliefs of 'little me' that keep us feeling enslaved. They result from past traumatic experiences. Our individual fears of what might happen and our belief that what is out there matters for our freedom are only a result of our socialisation, conditioning and programming - our ego identity.

When we were born, we didn’t have ego, but we existed. Stay with that for a moment. So who are we before the ego?

The more we peel away those onion layers and connect to that, the more it guides us and keeps us safe, the more mentally and physically healthy we become, the more we discover our own personal purpose, and the freer we feel.

The photos in this post hopefully express that sense of freedom - we’ve all felt it.

Peace, spaciousness, bliss, liberation, joy.

The feeling of freedom has to be experienced because it cannot adequately be described with words.

People who have taken plant medicines, or meditated, prayed, or gone within through Freedom Hypnosis even describe their ego evaporating.

It is said by such people, as with those who claim to be in a permanent state of enlightenment, that there is no suffering there - what we discover there is only freedom.

Part of that feeling is we are all connected and we are all one. This is known intellectually of course thanks to quantum physics, but no one comes back from experiencing that Golden Rule wanting to hurt or harm others because what we do unto others we do unto ourselves.

Therefore, the more people feel inner freedom, or feel free, this automatically creates a world of outer freedom. We only want to create a better world.

There is a lot we can do by re-discovering that freedom within at the core of our being. We can re-connect with abilities lying dormant and suppressed within our very own personal onion of conditioning, we can end unhealthy habits, clear internally stored stress, remove physical pain, reframe traumatic events, increase self-love, heal physical wounds. ..

And when we believe in and trust our own inner ability to decide what is right and what is wrong for us, it keeps us safe from those who desire more power and control over us. Those so removed from their own true essence that they only feel fear.

So my advice is definitely continue to create a better world in your own way, but moreover make it your focus to re-discover who you are beneath your conditioning.

For it is often said that it is only after people get what they want out there - again and again and again - that they eventually come to the realisation that this desire is never-ending. No change or improvement out there will ever make us happy.

Ultimately we have to look within.

About We Came Here for Freedom:

In February 2022, two protest convoys simultaneously began in New Zealand – from Cape Reinga at the top of the North Island and from Bluff at the bottom of the South Island.

Their destination was the capital city of Wellington. And what would happen when they got there would become a defining moment in the country’s history.

We Came Here for Freedom, Part 1 and Part 2, is a documentary project and historical archive of the people and stories of that convoy and the resulting 23-day occupation of the lawns and streets around New Zealand’s parliament buildings.

This is the story that the government and the media of New Zealand have fought to suppress.

It is the story of the protestors at parliament in February 2022, not as “filth,” but as New Zealanders united in their voice.
