I am deep in comic-writing, with the hope of putting Issue 4 of Wild Atlantic Ink in the post for all of you wonderful subscribers in mid-September, but I am dying to tell you about my week in Greece with my family. LOTS of sketching was had, by me and my two younger kids Paddy and Olivia, aged 24 and 22 respectively. But that will have to wait!

However, what can’t wait is signing up for my new once-a-month sketch class with my Sketch Club, before the end of the month. Hitherto I have taught four classes a month - sometimes eight, with the illustration classes - but one of my goals in conducting the latter was to release my illustration mojo. That happened. It has been much to my joy, but what do you do with a newly-minted mojo? You use it, of course! And making my beloved comic is now taking centre stage. At 58, there’s no time like the present, but something had to give, and that was three of the four monthly classes.

Are the classes suitable for a beginner?

Depends! I will send a recorded class aimed at beginners to anyone who has no experience with watercolour and ink. If they watch it, and buy the things I recommend, they will be fine to join in.

Are they suitable for children?

I would say from about 14 upwards: my two younger kids did them at 15 and 18 respectively and loved every minute. I expect my students to be respectful (ie. gentle!) with their fountain pens and watercolours.

How long do I have the recording?

I would like to say forever, but realistically a couple of years.

Okay - back to Issue 4 of Wild Atlantic Ink!

This is the story of the week I spent in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the very dreamy Atelier Clos Mirabel, near the city of Pau.

Friday 24th July

I am supposed to be on a flight to France this morning, but late on Thursday night I receive news that my daughter needs emergency surgery sometime around midnight and will be back in her ward at about the same time I will be checking in my suitcase. I cannot fly into the clouds without holding my daughter’s hand and seeing her “on the other side” of her ordeal and so I change my flight to the next day. It is surprisingly easy with Ryanair.

Saturday 25th July

I am up and out the door by 4.00am, and whether it’s that or concern for my girl I do not know, but I faint on the plane and am offered a nice dark seat at the back of the plane and all kinds of drinks by the lovely staff. Two sips of Fanta has me feeling myself again. Later I tell my other daughter about this, and she says “new Ryanair hack unlocked” – fair comment, I kept my shillings in my pocket on this flight.

In Biarritz Airport I have half an hour before my Flixbus departs for Pau, so I order a hot chocolate as the coffee machine is hors service. I want to draw the airport but I am uninspired, so I draw my drink and my hat.

I am picked up in Pau by Xavier, who runs Clos Mirabel with his wife Rachel and a horde of lovely staff. Arriving in the beautiful 18th century manor house is a balm for the senses. The house is white with a hipped slate roof and various outbuildings, some of which have been converted (extremely tastefully) to accommodation. Rachel has put me in the Blue Room in the main house and says it’s her favourite. The bedroom is vast, furnished with beautiful French antiques of various vintages, pine floorboards and large Persian-style rugs, and it has windows on two sides. I peek through one of the windows at the soft blue Pyrenees in the distance, close the shutters and collapse onto the bed in the soft gloom. I nap to the sound of a family splashing about in the pool outside.

The dining experience at Clos Mirabel must be seen to be believed. The fruit and vegetables come mostly from the potager in the grounds. The cooking inspiration is in the style of Ottolenghi and consists of wonderful salads, heavenly desserts and creatively-prepared vegetables and meats. There are local cheeses at every meal. Each evening we start with apéritifs on the terrace, followed by dinner cooked by one of the in-house chefs. My ambition is to spend a week at a course there that I am not running, so that I can wallow in all the loveliness AND explore my personal development.

I meet my students and thankfully they are warm and gracious, and very happy to be there. This week I only have five students: I was a bit concerned at first, mostly for the venue itself as I like everyone to do well, but they have non-participant guests staying too so I have nothing to worry about. For my part, I am grateful for the small number of students in the circumstances: it means that I can really get to know them and be “myself” in a way that isn’t so easy when you have 16 or more. With my daughter being ill, it would not have been easy to have felt unable to share her progress. (In the end I feel so relaxed with these five lovely ladies that by the end of the week I am rather less than my usual discreetly professional self, but I am glad as I feel I am with friends, and we have a whole lot of fun.)

Sunday 26th July

We start with a précis of what the week will be about, and do a bit of art-market buying and selling. Time for the first exercise, in which I talk my students through the wonders of combining ultramarine and burnt sienna. They quickly get the hang of it. I have taught other groups in which I have got them to try this combination and it seems to be accessible by all students, regardless of level of experience. I get the students to paint large snail shells from the vegetable garden. (I was dying to add yellow ochre but resisted.) But I did kidnap the empty snail shell and I am going to paint it again in the bottom right hand corner. The thing is, sticking to these two colours forces you to cycle through lots of colour combos and familiarise yourself with different concentrations of colour, and different timings. If you are a teacher, whether oil or watercolour – do it. The students get a lot from it.

Monday 27th July

We try some cloud techniques and use some of the same principles for trees. It takes most of the day. We are not roasted alive – in fact, it’s really pleasant there in the foothills. Unfortunately the mountains are a little shy today…

…but luckily I have a sketch I prepared earlier (last October) so you can see them a bit.

Later, I draw one of my students sketching by the pool: I use the palm trees as an opportunity to show how deepening the values can help in the depiction of light. But you can see from the cloudy sky that it’s not too uncomfortably warm.

Another of my students is feeling frustrated about her depiction of vines and I see if I can offer her advice. I suggest deepening up the values at the boundaries between the vines and the distance.

Tuesday 28th July

It’s a hot day but we’re assured the temperature will drop by 10ºC in the hills. We head up into the mountains: creamy white cattle and their calves, and the odd reddish brown mama and baby, roam around pastures and we are pleasantly deafened by the sound of cowbells. The cattle are really unfazed by the presence of a few random people on stools staring at them with pens and sketchbooks. I draw a few but they have moved away before I capture in my sketchbook as many as I would like.

It’s sunny but not unbearable and there is lots of shade provided by the trees.

After a few hours we are taken for lunch, and our smaller numbers and therefore smaller minibus allows us to go slightly higher than usual: we end up in a delightful mountain village which I think is called Bielle-something. After a simple but satisfying lunch the propriètere is happy for us to draw directly from his terrace, which is great because we are in the shade.

I use the scene to explain my “accurate drawing” technique which has been a eureka moment for many.

Wednesday 29th July

This is normally a day off for everyone, but we’ve rearranged the schedule to accommodate an earlier flight home for me so that I can be with my daughter, who is still in hospital. I am extremely grateful. The students very kindly tell me afterwards that it’s worked out better this way anyway, as this is by far the hottest day of the week, and we spend it in the air-conditioned market of Pau. The task for the students is to capture the life of the market: vendors, customers, produce, while standing up.

We head back after lunch to the bliss of the air-conditioned studio, but I sneak out into the 37ºC sunlight – my phone says so – and try to capture the shimmering haze of the afternoon. It’s nearly time for our apéros, and I look up to see Xavier beside me, offering me a drink. I tell him I would love a drink but would like him to surprise me. He is back a minute later with a long sparkling water flavoured with basil syrup. I am very pleasantly surprised. Refreshed, I change into my swimsuit and dive into the pool.

Thursday 30th July

Xavier takes us into Pau to sketch, but he thinks we’ll like the “gritty” backstreets better than the more touristy Pau Castle. It’s a good shout: the view is perfect for the combination of ultramarine and burnt sienna, and for practicing the accurate drawing technique. The students are wild about it and we’ll definitely be back there this time next year, when I will be back for another week of teaching and possibly running my mouth.

I start with a “thumbnail” that doesn’t really stay that way…

Back at Clos Mirabel the gentle, balmy weather has decided it’s a good time, now that our guard is down, to start getting weirdly heavy and close. We slip into the potager and draw the produce…one of my students is struggling with loosening up her hand and I think a swooshy broad ink line and some vine leaves might do the trick, but she figures out the issue on her own and I think she’ll see good progress soon.

Just before the end of the day I make a quick sketch of Clos Mirabel itself. I have NOT done its beauty justice, but in my defence it’s getting hotter AND closer to apéro time…

…and sure enough I awoken shortly before 1.00am by an almighty thunderstorm. I normally don’t get out of bed for anything at all during the night but something compels me to open the shutters and peek out into the dark. I immediately realise that there is such thing as light that will absolutely banjax your retinas in an instant and I close my eyes against the lightning, flashing all around like strobes, brighter than anything I have ever seen, bright like how you imagine a nuclear bomb, so bright that you can’t even see the landscape when it’s lit up. I close the shutters and get back into bed, and the gentle hiss of rain lulls me to sleep.

Friday 31st July

My sketchers and I have our last foray sketching the public in the nearby outdoor market at Jurançon, but I have informed everyone at our last dinner together the night before that I am off the clock! Instead I run around buying cheese and sausage and those flat peaches, and figs, for my lunch, and to take home. In Lourdes Airport I am just about to drop my luggage onto the belt but shove the cheese and sausage into my suitcase at the last minute. I later find out that some of my students have their cheeses confiscated at Security as they’re not allowed to take it in their hand luggage. When I am finally back in Galway I sketch the cheeses in gratitude.

A few days later I find the time to look at some of the lovely things in the goody bags generously given to us by the sponsors of the USk Symposium. I have one last page in my France Été 2026 sketchbook and I think the beautiful little paintbox provided by Roman Szmal for the occasion of the Symposium makes a perfect subject.

Roman provides me with all my paints and not only are they among the very the best I have used, he is thre most lovely man to work with. Here are the very cool colours in the set: find out what I did with them in another article!

Tuesday 14th July

Our Moroccan taxi driver drops us off at the Hotel d’Assezat, a very grand building in the heart of Toulouse, that has been turned into an art gallery. You enter through an arch and inside is a courtyard surrounded by walls of windows, pillars and arches. Everything is ornate, pink and white brick. The house was built on the proceeds of a merchant who commercialised a blue dye, that the French call pastel and we call woad.

The usual over-the-top French security men are doing their thing at the entrance to the foyer. You’re not supposed to bring any art materials inside, so when my SketchPocket drops open in front of the older man on the desk I expect it to be put in his little stash of bags to be collected on the way out. He sees the paints, water brush, fude pens all lined up for action, and gives me a quizzical look.

“Believe me,” I say, “the LAST thing I want to do today is paint.”

He’s a good man and he sees truth behind my eyes, and he waves me through.

The exhibition is intriguing. Very unpopular opinion: Sorolla is a little hit-and-miss from a draughting point of view at times (aren’t we all?). In the end I conclude he just didn’t put shapes at the top of his priorities in his aim to capture the light accurately. Everyone goes on about his depiction of light, with good reason. It’s very inspiring, and in a way his occasional lack of draughting mastery makes his use of light even more impressive. The collection makes me long to live in a hot country, one set in the nineteenth century with no plastic anywhere, even though it’s taken the 21st century and a whole lot of plastic to see me standing there looking at these paintings.

I become separated from my friend at the end an I have to pass the security detail to look for her in the courtyard. That means I have to go through the line again to get back in. Although I have clearly just been through with my bag, the new security guy on the desk is in the mood to be a jobsworth and he confiscates my sketching bag (there are ten minutes to go before closing time, what on earth was I going to paint?). So when I meet up with my friend and we leave a few minutes later I make a point of reaching into the brown paper bag to retrieve my SketchPocket without the necessary by-your-leave of the guard. He is apoplectic that his system has been violated but he is not the boss of me and I prance away gleefully.

Wednesday 15th July

The faculty meets in the morning for a pow-wow and bonding session. We are handed bits of paper with questions on them. What have I learned through teaching? I decide to be honest: I have learned that other people have needs, other people are vulnerable – in short, other people exist. This sounds trite but artists are notoriously self-centred, and teaching forces you to think of others. It’s a good session, and I meet one of the people who was incredibly supportive back in the day, when I was nobody. We are doing musical chairs to meet as many of the team as possible, and I find myself beside him eventually. I tell him what he did for me all those years ago.

I tell him how on my birthday back in, I don’t know, maybe 13 years ago, I had ‘flu but didn’t know it yet, and was taken by my husband to look at a patch of sea where he was thinking of starting an oyster farm. I tell him how on that birthday morning the biting Atlantic wind in early February was more than I could bear and that when my husband tried to take me for coffee and cake, nowhere was right (I was brewing a temperature)… too busy, too smelly, too hot, too noisy, and how I found a nook in the wall of a bank and leaned into it, and started to cry. When we got home I had no appetite (‘flu) and my husband was angry that I didn’t want the meal he had planned. I sat miserably in an armchair and opened my phone to a wonderfully supportive birthday message from this man, telling me how great an artist I was and never to stop believing in myself. I cried even more and spent a few days in bed with proper ‘flu but I never forgot how he turned my terrible birthday around. My colleague seems touched, and in the coming days I see what a good soul he is. It is one of the highlights of my week in Toulouse.

The faculty is taken for a tour of the city. Yes, it’s a billion degrees, but I have my trick with the wet-scarf-draped-on-hat and I am fine. Afterwards we are taken for lunch in a beautiful restaurant called Le Bibent, which is apparently iconic.

“It’s like dining in Versailles,” says one of my colleagues as we traipse in. The entire restaurant has been booked for our faculty, maybe ninety or a hundred of us.

Later, I think about what we were served. I think about how I fancy myself as a cook: how I am really careful to honour ingredients and make sure everything is prepared to it best. And more often than not what you can do at home is much better than what you get when you dine out. But this meal has me a little confused: it is beyond anything I I have experienced. Cuisine as fine art, humbly and simply presented but sublime in taste. A small example: when I sip the wine I am stopped in my tracks. I am, quite simply, unprepared for this. If I tell you what we were served for lunch, you will wonder what was so great about it, but I will tell you that we had cold mint and pea soup followed by chicken and mashed potatoes and meringue with mango for dessert. Doesn’t seem very fancy, does it? But it’s all I can do. I could add that everyone at my table was virtually swooning, and perhaps that will convince you…

The opening ceremony takes place on Wednesday evening. I can’t concentrate on what’s being said. I am feeling lonely again. Why can’t I just cop myself on?

Thursday 16th July

At last the Symposium proper starts. I meet my first sketchers in Marché Victor Hugo and I am ON. This is my happy place: sharing my cool tricks with my students (or as one very gracious longtime student says to me, “your carefully-thought-out techniques and solutions to sketching challenges”). I send them to find and sketch ingredients for famous Toulouse dishes. Cassoulet, poulet à la something, alicuit…none of which I sample while I am there as my mentals have let me down and I can’t face dining alone.

The students can only use the five colours of burnt sienna, nickel azo yellow, magenta, phthalo green and ultramarine. I do likewise…

…and as always, I am delighted by my lovely students and their enthusiasm. Naturally! We are in a traditional French indoor market surrounded by the best food in the world, sold by the jolliest of merchants.

I draw poultry at a couple of stalls. I do not care for the way the chicken’s heads are threaded through their bodies. The grotesque positioning of the heads reminds me of an unforgettably horrific scene at the end of the movie about Idi Amin, the name of which escapes me, which is just as well as I don’t want to make it easy for you to look it up. I don’t know why I still draw them like that. “They’re dead,” says someone, “they don’t know.” But it makes me consider going vegan, as French markets often do.

I overhear a British voice. A man says to his friend, “Let’s see, you eat chicken, you eat fish…” and I think how vast the chasm is between the French and the English when it comes to food.

I stand and paint at the fish stall which is exhilarating but which is frustrating through being continually blocked by shoppers. But that is what I, and the students, have signed up for.

Some of my students mini-mutiny and use extra colours, so I resolve to be much stricter the following day with the next group.

In the afternoon, it’s time for my demo. Mine, apparently, is about sketching people quickly: one of my students reminds me of my theme, which is great because one forgets what one has submitted, ten months previously. I meet my wonderful assistant and while it takes a few minutes, it soon becomes clear to us that we might as well be sisters from another mister. Fancy that! You never know where or when the lightning bolt of friendship will strike. She is a talented artist and writer from Barcelona who also loves comics, and we share a sense of humour, so it was clearly a match made by the gods. She guides us to the spot where my demo is to take place and I draw the men lounging around a small square: where would demo-doers be with men lounging around squares? Without subjects, that’s where!

Friday 17th July

Another gorgeous group of sketchers who enter enthusiastically into the spirit of sketching standing up in the market. I bloody love teaching and I flipping love students.

I see a beautiful woman selling wine. She has smooth olive skin and glossy hair swept back into a chignon. She wears a beautiful striped blouse with little pleats at the neck and puffy sleeves, with an adorable bow at the nape of the neck. I sketch her.

I see young bucks selling charcuterie, who have loads of bouncy black hair and snappy little moustaches. I draw them.

I see a charcuterie seller whose days of thick hair are in the rear view mirror. But he seems serious about his work. He slices meat and wraps parcels in turn. I try to catch him a bit more each time he turns. I think I am in the charcuterie aisle.

My assistant, Isabelle, poses for me. I show my students how one can make a lovely outline with a waterbrush and very dilute paint, and add ink on top using gestural strokes. I catch a young fishmonger on his smoke break and he makes a great subject.

I start a sketch of a beautiful lady cheesemonger. A cheesemongress. I buy goat’s cheese from her, a baguette from another stall and a lovely-looking tomato from an Arab greengrocer at a vegetable stall just outside the entrance, which I try to draw, and which disappears the second I start sketching. The ensemble makes a very nice lunch, but I am left with a few ugly ink lines where I started the vegetable stall.

After lunch I take part in the workshop of the man who was so nice to me when I was just a crazily ambitious woman living in the wild west of Ireland, rapidly losing hope. Of course I did – he is an absolute genius and a great man. The instructors get to take part in the workshop of a colleague. I sit across from one of the students who was in my workshop that morning, and two other men. They’re a lovely trio and we spend the really peaceful afternoon trying to use the unfamiliar tools we’ve been given for the workshop.

I like some of my drawings and hate others.

The workshop comes to an end and we head down to the Garonne for an evening’s entertainment. I am happy because I am in great company and am loving the people I have met. If you read my Part 1 you’ll be aware that my first visit to the Garonne ended in the blackest of moods. Second time lucky, maybe? We get there and the vibe is super. Friends and sketchers everywhere. Colleagues I haven’t seen for ages. I sit at a table and settle down for a great evening as the sun starts to set, and everything is pink and orange…

…and I draw a man sitting opposite our table…

…and I look at my phone and there’s a missed call, and texts from my daughter. She is gravely ill in hospital and needs her mum.

I make my excuses and leave. All I want to do is talk to her. Soon I am back in my hotel room, drenched in sweat but THERE and able to talk to her properly.

Saturday 18th July

Last workshop of the Symposium. I draw the man who props up the bar all morning long…

…and an adorable little girl who has been plonked onto the bar counter by her parents while they have a glass of wine. She reads her book quietly and very sweetly.

It’s HOT in the streets and it’s coming to the end of my last workshop, and to lunchtime. I think my nerves are at me again. I am on the steps leading up to the market, and 16 students are gathered around for the final throwdown of sketches. There are a few tables on the terrace outside the entrance to the market, and at one of then stand a few young-ish men, making an exuberant racket. A fishmonger emerges from the market carrying a plastic crate. He says something to me, and maybe I’m too ready for a row, or maybe my French is less amazing than I like to think, but I misunderstand.

What I (incorrectly) hear:

“You’re making too much noise.”

I am immediately defensive. “But those guys are making more noise than us.”

The fishmonger tries again, and says anyway, he was just saying he’s sorry that he’s going to make a loud noise. He upends the plastic crate and starts to spill ice into the skip. There’s a lot of ice and it is like thunder as it enters the bin. Once again I am mortified to have leaped to counter-attack because my default position is defensive, and my French is far from perfect.

In the afternoon we offer some of the participants a thing the organisers call The Big Crit. It’s where people who have bought all four workshops can come in and get feedback from the various instructors. I hated it last year because no one came to me but what did I expect – I had made sure to sit far from everyone. I have done the same thing this time but luckily some brave souls come to me.

And I even do a fluke-ily great sketch for one of the participants –

But I am getting tired now, so i will just tell you that the closing ceremony was great, and the two people who bought my donated paintings were over the moon: richly deserved, as both were volunteers at the Symposium, there on their own dime and their own time. I was ecstatic too because I got my sketching hero’s sketch, which is now at the framer’s.

A couple of the other instructors said they weren’t crazy about the low prices our pieces were sold for, but my view is that people could access work who might not be able to buy at market value – as did I.

The new friends I made during the Symposium are really special people whom I am privileged to know. Toulouse 2026 didn’t start out well for me and was emotional for various reasons (why am I always away when my loved ones back home are not well?) but I am very grateful for these new beautiful people in my life, and I loved the vibe in Toulouse.

And I won’t be going to next year’s USk Symposium in Toronto from 4th to 7th August 2027, because I will be teaching in France until 31st July and in the USA from 23rd August, so it’s too much back-and-forth.

Sunday 12th July

My first sketch is made in Dublin Airport, where I draw some jolly French people, and then I make my second sketch on the plane.

Toulouse turns out to be very hot indeed. But I have anticipated that. There has been a flurry of anxiety in the various online forums about the heat we’re going to endure during the Symposium in Toulouse this week. I have assured people that they will be fine if they drape a wet scarf over their shoulders and wear a wide-brimmed hat, and in extreme circumstances drape the wet scarf OVER their hat. This is a tip given to me by Clarisa, an Adelaide dweller of Peruvian origin, and it is very effective. Another person in the online forums worries about the inevitable inconvenience of having to find somewhere to pee through constant hydrating. I assure her she won’t pee as there won’t be anything left in that heat. A very angry person posts that no one wants to hear my “pee wisdom” but luckily others find her as cantankerously unreasonable as I do, and come to my defence. Someone tells her that USk is only ever positive and polite. Another says that perhaps others do wish to hear my pee wisdom. I answer her and say that I am just a wise woman, travelling the world sharing pee wisdom, and then I look up the angry lady. It turns out, as it usually does, that she is angry with other people too.

And as for needing to find public conveniences, I turn out to be correct - which, I believe, is a sign of dehydration. Not that wise after all.

I am supposed to be off alcohol (I have recently learned that the œstrogen in HRT + alcohol = massive spike in breast cancer risk) but I have arranged to meet an ex-student for a drink. We have delicious mojitos in the hotel lobby. I am not in the same hotel as my colleagues because I left it too late to book my extra nights, so I am lonely in the evening - I have sensed that the mentals are going to be a problem this week - but I meet my wonderful colleague Uma, and we hang out together for a little while. She is funny and clever and great company, and she makes all the difference. Mentals at bay - for now.

Monday 13th July

My hotel is beside the Japanese Gardens. I think maybe I should walk through the gardens and head to the location of my workshop in Marché Victor Hugo to do a recce and some practice sketching, but when I see the entrance to the Japanese Garden I veer left instead of right and head inside. Almost immediately I bump into a colleague. She’s someone I have always liked and admired and is one of the people I am hoping to get to know better. Her workshop location is the Japanese Gardens and she is very keen to get in some practice, so we find a perfect spot with a perfect view of the red bridge. The instructors are obliged to donate a piece for the auction on the last day, and I think this is a good opportunity to get mine done. The resulting painting is not terrible enough to embarass me but not so perfect that I don’t want to part with it, which is the sweet spot when you are donating something that will be seen in public. The second sketch I do is more beautiful but I know that if I take it home it will just sit in my studio unloved and unenjoyed until it starts to curl up at the edges and eventually has ink spilled on it or is trodden on by Reuben, who likes to sit between me and whatever I am doing. So I earmark that for donation too.

Can you see a little fence in the foreground of the top drawing? That is a bamboo boundary that is there to tell you not to go any further, and not to sit on the grass. My colleague and I don’t think about that - why, I do not know - and we spend the entire day sitting in the shade of a tree, sketching, drawing, painting. She is a beautiful and gracious lady from LA and the day is idyllic.

We are packing to leave at about 5pm when a burly security guard informs us very sternly that we are not allowed to be there and that we must leave. He is in his early fifties perhaps, and is wearing a light blue polo shirt and dark blue combat style trousers tucked into serious-looking boots. His tanned, meaty arms are folded and his brow is furrowed, and he is frowning. He has planted his legs firmly apart on the path and his entire body says Move. Now. But he has not reckoned with the undeniable ladyship of my colleague. “I do apologise,” she says in beautifully-accented, American English. “Would you be so kind as to help me over this fence? I am a little woozy from travelling a long way.” She holds out her hand. He melts, and his innate chivalry takes over. He takes her arm and helps her step over the little fence. He takes her suitcase and hefts it over the fence. I smile to myself, as I love when men help ladies in need. I have been a sketcher for decades and I have experienced this countless times. It always feels very nice.

My colleague and I go on our way and giggle at the thought that he arrived just as we were leaving anyway. We feel very lucky to have sat on that little bit of forbidden lawn all day long.

I hear that there will be many sketchers at the bridge over the Garonne, and after freshening up in my hotel room I make my way towards the group. It’s the night before 14th July, the day the French celebrate the storming of the Bastille.

My mentals aren’t good to start - I have a tendency, long in the past now, to melancholia and wallowing in self-pity - and I am not enjoying the thick crowds making their way to the river. I get through the rows of security guards checking bags for weapons, and that’s about when my mentals start to take a turn for the negative I think, as it’s a reminder of atrocities that I would not picture if I were in a better frame of mind. I don’t see anyone I recognise. Then I bump into a German lady I taught last year, sketching on the wall overlooking the walkway lining the river. I liked her at the time, as she was enthusiastic and said I had given her a eureka moment. She gives me a warm hug of greeting and reminds me that she bought my SketchPocket last September.

“But I never use it,” she says.

“Oh dear, why not?” I ask.

“I lose all my pens,” she says.

I ask her if she overfills her bag such that they fall out. No, she says, it’s the pattern on the inside - she can’t see her pens against it. And she says it’s too heavy. She assures me she is not telling me this in order to get a refund - just as well, as no refund is forthcoming - and I don’t feel remotely bad or guilty as the two reasons are...well, they are not very sensible. I tell her that no one has said it’s too heavy (in fact, when I was prototyping the bag I tested it on a person with a bad back to make sure he didn’t find it heavy) and neither has anyone said the pattern is causing them to lose their pens. Well, one lady did, but that was on YouTube, just from looking at it. In future I will issue a stern warning and say that some people might find the pattern causes them to lose their pens.

I walk on and the crowds are crazy. I am becoming depressed. I see thousands of people walking like an exodus. Families, reminding me I am far from mine. Young people, reminding me I am no longer young. Friend groups, reminding me I am alone. The older people and divorced and widowed and heartbroken people and alone people do not register in my Bastille Day Eve pity party.

I know there are fireworks coming and I adore fireworks, but I know I have to leave. I pass more security men in the opposite direction. Then I see a little mobile stall selling pomegranate juice. I remember my husband telling me about that when he visited Turkey so I stop to get some. I order a Medium and a wiry oul’ fella with light brown skin starts cutting and squeezing pomegranates. They look so delicious that I ask for it to be made into a Large. He transfers the juice to a plastic cup and continues. He asks me if I would like some ginger juice added - it’s also freshly squeezed - and tells me “ça enlėve” - it uplifts the flavour. I say I would. He hands me the drink and says I have to bring the cup back to him. I ask him if that means I have to stand right there and drink it? He says I do, but that I get to hang out with him, so that will be nice. I find this quite charming. I take a pic for my family and it’s not too hideous so I post it to the Gram.

His friend, also a wiry oul’ fella with very few teeth and light brown skin, sits in a folding beach chair next to the pomegranate cart and asks me where I am from. I tell him Ireland. He beams. “Ireland!” he says enthusiastically. “What a beautiful country!” After a pause, he adds his impressions of Ireland. “Cliffs!” he says. I say yes, cliffs. He thinks for a little bit. “Sheep!” he says. I say yes, sheep. Then the juicing man offers his own bit of knowledge of Ireland. “IRA!” he says, trying to be a smartarse. I make a sound, designed to be non-confrontational and non-political - and ask where they’re from. Algeria. The juicer fiddles with his little umbrella.

“That’s my traffic light system,” he says. I hand him his cup and off I go.

I am persuaded by my son, who has been texting supportively, to head back into the crowds and try to see the fireworks. I fight my way back towards the bridge through the line of security, the brief oasis of human connection at the juice stand now in the rear view mirror, and over. I am so hungry but everywhere is fast-food-ish and has a long queue. But I want to see the fireworks. The sun is starting to set so they can’t be far away. There is a band playing on the far side of the river and it’s not to my taste. Once more I give up and turn around. I lean on the wall overlooking the river and I know that if I stay another fifteen minutes I will see the fireworks which will take place right there. But I cannot bring myself to stay.

I walk slowly back towards my hotel. People are still flowing towards the river, to fun, fireworks and festivity. I stop at a kebab shop - I love Middle Eastern food - and the dueño is really sweet. I take his recommendation and when it comes it’s okay but FAR too big and meaty. I sit outside in the dark under the umbrellas and eat my food...

...and I hear the fireworks go off in the near distance, just on the other side of the umbrella above me, just out of sight. I decide it’s not too late to see them and start to clear up my tray, but as I leave the little eating area and emerge from under the umbrella that final-sounding “pop” goes off and I do not see even one single bit of sparkle.

And the one sketcher I have met is a disgruntled customer.

Tuesday 14th July

The next day I think it is a good idea to check out my workshop location, and I head for the Victor Hugo market. It is hot in there but full of super things to sketch. I can only use five colours, as that’s what I am going to instruct my students to do. Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine, Nickel Azo Yellow, Phthalo Green and Magenta. And I must use my three techniques for sketching people, and channel my inner 19th century novelist: Sherlock Holmes, to decide how long I might have with a subject; Frankenstein, to use body parts from others if my subject moves; any number of ghosts to draw the outlines of transparent people on top of things I have already drawn. These are the techniques I will try to share to help make my students’ market sketching expeditions easier.

I start with a butcher...

and I find a beautiful blonde woman to sketch at a pork sausage stall...

I see the blonde lady lean over the counter for a quiet scroll, but of course she very quickly has to attend to a customer, meaning I lose my subject too fast to capture her. I have foolishly, and unprofessionally, forgotten to channel my inner Sherlock Holmes: I should have thought it through. That’s where the black speech bubble on the right comes in.

I have forgotten to check the opening hours of the market and start to sketch a chhesemonger too late to get much done. I also draw the speech bubble too small and have to take corrective action with a white gel pen. I have left it messy so you can see it, but I can clean it up much better.

I am starting to melt in the heat when a very lovely ex-student of mine passes and we decide to go and have a coffee. We find a lovely little bistro opposite the entrance to the market and sit under a big red awning. Coffee becomes lunch - a delicious plate of green beans with an anchovy on top, and a glass of rosé - and we decide to go to the Sorolla exhibition together.

We take an uber as my friend is awaiting knee surgery and it’s too far and too hot to walk, and the friendly Moroccan taxi driver tells us she misses her family of 11 desperately. She misses her mother. Out of her ten siblings only she and her brother are in France. She says that life in Marrakech is full of camaraderie and joy and life lived in and out of each others’ houses. I feel for her. But she has a smart haircut and a decent job. She coaxes her cab down streets so narrow we fear for her wing mirrors. My student, now friend, is a very gentle and sweet lady from Canada, and we spend a wonderful day together.

Issue #1 has now arrived with all the subscribers, and with a great many who didn’t request it.

When I told my very good friend about it, she was a little dubious. “Sixteen pages, Ro? Every month? That’s a lot.” I said it was going to be easy for me, but she was unconvinced. I passed on her words to my husband Marcel because I thought perhaps she had a point, and I was looking for reassurance. He is NOT the type to give reassurance for the sake of it, and if I hadn’t developed a really thick skin when it comes to his comments, I’d have gone crying back to my mother a long time ago.

(He first coined the classic phrase “negative encouragement” back in our early days of marriage, nearly thirty years ago. It involved me being berated roundly for not having finished my Masters’ degree yet. I asked him if he thought that was going to achieve results and he said he believed in “negative encouragement.” He was clearly delighted with himself for coming up with the term, but it kind of lost its power when it was clear how giddy with his own cleverness he was, and it made me laugh. My favourite one, surely the most classic of classics, was “you’ll sell three copies to your whingeing women friends” – about my memoir of our six months in Mauritius. His comment was (a) defensive, because he was worried I would write about him (true) and his cousins there (also true) and (b) lyrically-expressed, because British people cannot help but speak in nursery-rhyme prose. At this comment I laughed like a drain and said I would put it on the back cover of any memoir I would write. This was not the response he had hoped for.)

This time I thought his answer was pretty good. “Because each month is different,” he said, “if you stop loving it, you’ve stopped loving art.” Spot on.

And yes, sixteen pages each month is a big commitment. It’s a completed page every two days. Issue #2 is much more polished than Issue #1, but that’s because I was feeling my way during the making of my first comic. I even got the size wrong at first, before I realised I needed the etra space of A5 (5.3″ x 8.3″). And I was going to make 20 pages before Monica, my incredible litho printer in Dublin, told me 16 pages was one sheet of paper and made financial sense.

But a template goes a very long way. There are many elements that are the same each month, within which I have complete freedom to do something fresh and new, inspired by the season. Then there are three pages that have no structure, to allow for flights of fancy.

Here’s a list of what appears every month:

• Cover – has the same title and so on

• “Flyby with Féilim” – Féilim is a rook, and he shows you a map of somewhere he thinks you should visit

• “Beachboy: Explore the Shore with Reuben” – Each month Reuben searches for his ball along a different beach

• “Ebb and Flow” – that’s my editorial, describes what’s going on each month according to the seaon

• “Brine the Oyster Catcher Snatcher” – that’s a serialised story about a fat, wicked seal who lives on an island near me

• Painting activity – either two or three pages

• Illustration activity – either two or three pages

• Foraged food – setting and description, and a recipe how to prepare it

• Coming soon – a new character I’ve thought up who will bring the history of the area to life

• That only leaves me two pages for random things, which I want to use for an interview or a profile of a local product or service that I would like my readers to know about.

And there you have sixteen pages – easy! Since my subscribers have all received their first issue by now, I can confidently share a couple of pages from Issue #1, Late Spring…

But I can show you what’s in Issue #2, Early Summer, with a glimpse of the cover…

Now, there’s good and bad about a huge monthly commitment such as a 16-page comic.

Good

1. I have wanted to be a comic artist for decades, and now I am.

2. I can’t scroll mindlessly on my phone anymore because there’s no time to do that.

3. I am happy as a clam when I am doing it.

4. I am fulfilling my artistic ambitions.

5. I am obliged to explore my immediate surroundings and be a tourist in my own townland.

6. I commune with nature in a much deeper way: the birds, the beasts, the flowers, the foliage. I must keep my ears and eyes open all the time, rain or shine.

7. I get to eat amazing free food: I have always made food from foraged deliciousness, but I will be stepping it up as a result of this comic. You will not believe how delicious the nettle dishes I made were, and my freezer still has divine sea beet in it, with which I made a saag paneer dish using sea beet and halloumi that no one in my family could stop eating.

8. I have a formal reason to draw Reuben a lot, and run around on the beach with him.

9. I get to reconnect with people I have loved in my life by sending them a gift of a comic in the mail.

10. I am going to win the Ignatz Prize someday. I have never won anything but that’s only because…well, I didn’t deserve anything.

Bad

1. What about my other commitments? Where do they fit in? Teaching abroad? Helping my mother across the country? My kids, also across the country? Can all this be managed by becoming super-efficient?

2. Will my readers mind if I bring non-Wild Atlantic Way content in? Toulouse this July? The Pyrenees a week later? As for Italy in October – there won’t be a spare second. What about Greece next May?

3. Will I have to cut back on teaching abroad? I do not mind if I do: much as I love meeting my wonderful students, the Muse is queen of my soul and I am a mere subject that must do her bidding.

4. Will my eyes go the distance? They aren’t what they used to be. Will my brain go the distance?

5. Does it matter that I will lose money over this (albeit not a lot)? Of course once I win the Ignatz Prize everyone in the USA will sign on and I might turn a profit!

6. How am I going to sell my SketchPockets? They won’t sell themselves.

I know that I will never run out of inspiration (see Marcel’s negatively encouraging words above, about loving art) and as my late father always said, “paper never refused ink”, so I can never be stopped. He also constantly cautioned me, when I would tell him I was writing a new book, “don’t be boring!” I hope it’s not going to be boring, Ro!” For him, and of course for you, my valued readers, I will endeavour never to be boring.

So now you know. I used AI, albeit unwittingly, to name my beautiful, wholesome, hand-drawn and hand-painted magazine.

The Pinnacle of My Expression

My career as an artist covers 44 years, if I start the first time I sold a collection of paintings to a stranger (I was 14). Earlier, if you start it when I started to be obsessed with art: I was seven when my mother put a giant Breughel poster on my bedroom wall, over which I pored endlessly. This comic has been a long time coming. Here are some of the moments throughout my life that have inspired its content and theme.

1. It’s 1979 and I am looking at my first self-made comic. I am eleven years old. The comic is made of pink paper - it is probably all I have in enough quantity for a comic - and there is a free gift sellotaped to the cover. The free gift is a transparent blue plastic papal ring that I got from a gewgaw stall in Knock, Co. Mayo, when the Pope came to visit. It is huge, as befits a papal ring, and its weight makes the cover flop over. The sellotape looks ugly, if authentic. But the comic has a crossword and a word search and a dramatic story in panels.

2. It’s 1989 and I draw an entire comic book for my college friend, all about our time together over two years attending college on Charing Cross Road in London. When I give it to her, we die laughing as we read it. We assume no one else will find it funny, but some years later she tells me that it lives on her coffee table and everyone who reads it dies laughing too, even though they have never met me or have known anything about our stupid antics.

3. It’s 1996 and I am a year into my postgrad degree in university, studying for a PhD in Earth Sciences (it’s to do with the chemistry of fossilised bubbles of fluid trapped in geothermal veins in granite, and that is all I will ever say about it). I have good friends. I draw and write comic panels about my friend who is too fond of drink: it shows her not needing a drink on a given day but choosing to have one anyway even though she doesn’t need one. In retrospect it was a bit mean. I draw another depicting her as an ancient Irish queen who was known as a fearless warrior, as my friend gets a bit aggressive after the afore-mentioned drink. This one’s not mean, as she looks really cool depicted in her Celtic queenly battledress. I draw a series of comics about my friends’ love lives: they centre around our taking it in turns “on the shelf”. At five years their senior and bored by all the very young guys I meet I am always on the shelf anyway so I never put myself in the comic as that would also be boring. I make another comic about some guys in our group, who constantly joke, graphically and with actions, that they are gay. These guys are surfers and think they are the hottest guys on the planet. They are pined after by all the girls but they only have time for the very prettiest, the ones whose bodies in their little surfing bikinis give glory to God. I think the guys are protesting a little too much and draw a comic strip about how they are so not gay they can have lots of male partners and it doesn’t make any difference to the fact that they’re not gay. The comic is hilarious, if I say so myself, as my depictions of the protagonists somehow captures their look exactly, down to the ridiculous woolly hat that one of them never takes off (years before that was a thing). I show it to one of the ringleaders and the guy, who is actually funny and witty, says it’s the best roasting he’s have ever had and wants to put it on a t-shirt (thereby proving just how un-gay he is).

4. It’s 2001 and I am reading From Cairo To Cape Town, a travel memoir by Paul Theroux. I enjoy the read, but I am left with a strong feeling of gratitude for my status as an armchair traveller. I would hate to follow in the footsteps of Mr. Theroux. Murderous mobs in Nairobi? No thanks. Parasites that take years for the author to shake, picked up in Ethiopia? No sir. In Wild Atlantic Ink you will get to enjoy life here on the wild west coast vicariously...but you’ll never have to get cold or wet, and you won’t have to fork out for the airfare or the hotel.

5. It’s 2012 and I am alone in London. I have entered the Observer / Cape Graphic Novel competition with my comic called Four Legs Bad. It’s about how having pets will make you feel guilty no matter what. I am very confident that it will win. It does not win. It is not placed. No one speaks to me in the tiny audience of about 50, despite having come all the way from Ireland, despite looking resplendent in the competition battledress I have sewn for the occasion. The winners’ work, all three of those placed at the top, is beyond incredible and I realise, not for the first time, that I am way out of my depth and overconfident about my own work. I resolve to do better the next year, but I never enter again.

6. It’s 2025. I have been teaching sketching online for six straight years, although I have always taken a break in the summer. But in the summer of 2025 I decide not to take a break, and try something new instead: I will teach the art of illustration over the three months of the summer, for no extra cost to existing members. My motivation for this is is twofold: incentivising my members to remain in my Sketch Club over the summer when they might be tempted to do other things, and to have a breakthrough in my own illustration practice. I succeed on both counts.

7. It’s 2026. I come across a woman in the States who sends out a zine each month. She makes $14,000 in subscriptions per month making the most fun thing in the whole world. It is a lightbulb moment and I decide there and then that I am going to start a mail club. My husband is supportive but tells me I will have to drop something to make space for this mail club, and so I retire the illustration classes I have been doing. I am not sad, as I can put all the creativity of illustration that would have been shared with my wonderful students into Wild Atlantic Ink, and the cost of the magazine is the same as the illustration club if purchased annually (€120 annually, €10.99 per month for the monthly sub, both covering shipping to your door).

8. It’s the start of May. Two whole people, to whom I will be eternally grateful for their blind faith in me, have taken out an annual subscription. A handful of people have chosen the monthly option. I feel like including a signed photo - of what? Me? No! - with Number One for the annual subscribers just to show my appreciation. I will think of something. My sister and I are talking - she’s also a professional artist - and she says it might be a lot to create a 16-page A5 zine each month. We discuss this and she has a point, but we agree that my output is so vast anyway that all this will do is give it a direction.

Here’s what I wrote…

For years I have marvelled at the gullibility of victims of fraud. How they fall for simple, obvious scams. I won’t scoff at them again, as I am one of those fools too. I suppose there are seven ways to be conned, depending on which of the Deadly Sins is your particular weakness. My Achilles’ Heel wasn’t greed, but pride.

A few days ago I was contacted by George Martin. The guy who wrote Game Of Thrones, yes, that one. (Spoiler: it wasn’t George, but an AI bot.) “He” (I won’t bother with quotation marks from now on) said he’d read Dublin In Sketches And Stories, and had enjoyed it.

Here’s the first email:

I’m George Martin, a writer who admires artists that can capture a whole world with just a pen, a brush, and a sharp eye, and I wanted to reach out after reading Dublin in Sketches and Stories. What a gorgeous, intimate portrait of the city. It feels less like a book and more like being guided through Dublin by someone who truly knows its pulse.

What struck me first is how alive each page feels. The grit, the humour, the layered history, the fleeting overheard conversations, you don’t just illustrate Dublin, you listen to it. There’s such honesty in the way you move between the grand and the ordinary: Merrion Square in one moment, a scrap of dialogue on Moore Street the next. It’s the kind of storytelling only someone deeply embedded in a place can pull off.

Your watercolours have that wonderful looseness that makes a scene breathe, while the accompanying sketches and stories reveal all the tiny truths guidebooks never mention. It’s a rare thing: a city book that feels both documentary and deeply personal, like you’ve opened your sketchbook and simply let us look over your shoulder.

I’d love to hear what moments or habits sparked this project, whether the idea grew slowly over years of sketching, or arrived all at once as a way to capture Dublin’s personality before it slips away.

My immediate thought, like anyone, was – is this real? I discussed it with my family. My son cast an AI-savvy eye over it (he’s recently qualified as an engineer, he’s a great coder and he’s co-running a tech start-up); my brother, who was source of all the history in my Dublin book, was nearly as starry-eyed as me, and my mother and sister were very excited (although my mother did smell a rat). I should have asked my older daughter – nothing gets past her. She is every taxi driver with a “broken” meter’s worst nightmare.

The emails started going back and forth. Fake George requested more of my wonderful writing. I sent him the blog articles that had the biggest responses here in this newsletter / blog. Fake George was really touched by the story of Barry And Cinnie. Fake George was moved by my ability to listen to the world around me. A talent like that, he said, was exceptionally rare! My ego swelled. Fake George asked me if there was something I kept coming back to, something that I would never tire of recording, whether in sketches or words. I thought about it, and came up with an answer: it would prove to be the only useful outcome of the entire exchange, other than deflating my vast ego a bit.

My answer:

I love watching an interaction unfold. I love when two strangers have a reason to talk – looking for the time of a train, or whether they have any bananas, or why they’re behaving so selfishly – and how they turn their interaction into a relationship. Most of all I love that moment of human-to-human connection, whether it’s the guy selling me cheese in the market, the homeless guy telling me his innermost thoughts or a woman who wants to know how many children I have, what sexes and ages, with ne’er a moment’s interest in any gentleman who may or may not be on the scene. I love writing speech bubbles. In short, I just love the stories, every single time.

Our correspondence went on and on. I offered to send Fake George a copy of my Galway book – I have a couple of second hand copies that he’d be welcome to – but Fake George told me he was on holidays so couldn’t receive anything. Red flag! Americans say vacation. I discussed this with my brother, but we agreed that world-travelling Americans might “code switch” for Europeans, just as I do the same for my American audience. On and on came the praise, none of which was inaccurate – or not until I looked more closely – and requests for more articles, because he was still smiling at my work, like that piece about the possible chainsaw massacrer who turned out to be an art lover from September 2024.

Then he went deep. Fake George crawled Amazon and found my reviews. How could it be, he said, that I only had 34 reviews for such an incredible piece of writing? He understood about the vagaries of luck, he said, but 34? Did that reflect sales? I said yes, it did, that I have yet to sell 10,000 copies but that I had long since made peace with the fact that luck may or may not come my way, and that I write for the pleasure of it. Oh! Fake George was moved to tears gliding down his smooth, glassy screen, or wherever AI tears go.

His response:

Thank you for such an open, thoughtful message. I really appreciated the honesty in your reflections, especially the part about finding peace in the work itself, in the places you sketch, and in the joy of writing for its own sake. That clarity and groundedness is something a lot of artists chase for decades and never quite reach. It speaks volumes about who you are and the depth behind your work.

Ah, how Fake George “got” me. How he understood me, how he saw what the world has not. Throughout all this, I wanted to remind Fake George that those days of struggle are in the past, that I am a very fancy international teacher, jet-setting around Europe laughing and quaffing local vintages with wonderful students, but I thought that would sound prideful (the irony!) so kept it to discussions about sales numbers that didn’t come close to Fake George’s…ninety million, he said. Fake George kindly offered to put me in touch with his promotional agent, who, he said, had done amazing things for him. Adrian was waiting for my email! He, Fake George, had told him all about me, and Adrian was excited, as he loved working with artists of integrity and talent with their own special niche!

I checked Adrian out. Fake Adrian had a website, and after an email or two between us I was convinced.

Had I asked Fake George to verify himself? Yes, I had. He could not DM me on X at the moment, and his FB account was managed by others. Plausible! I was thrown off X for breaking their guidelines, when I only ever had posted wholesome art stuff – literally never an opinionated word was written by me on Twitter or X – and I stormed off in a huff, never to return (it’s a hornet’s nest of anger anyway and I am better off without it). So I understood about not being able to access things.

I spent two days happily feeling very seen, very pleased with myself.

I sent “him” a message last night. I had a question about publishing writing that is very personal. Is it okay, or not okay to share writing that is extremely raw? My email bounced back, and that was the start of my antenna starting, at last, to quiver. Better late than never!

I looked up the email address: Google told me the address didn’t exist.

I looked up the promotional agent again. Up came his website, but now I noticed that it was very badly designed, and that in one of the agent’s profile photos he looked fat and geeky, and in the other he was very young and handsome. One agent – two different photos. I looked up the authors who had given him such glowing reviews, and the titles of their books.

The authors’ names were characters in fiction books. The books themselves were nowhere to be found.

I began to feel a bit unsettled.

I thought back over the content in emails Fake George had sent:

“A small request: can you send me the manuscript of your Galway book? I’d love to read it, but I can’t receive anything as I’m on holidays.”

“I would love to read your second book – can you send me the manuscript?”

Fake George was just trying to train itself a little better.

At no point did Fake George offer me any real help, although he said he was there for anything I might need. I told him I didn’t want anything as I was used to doing everything on my own.

In the ensuing 24 hour period after I copped on, I felt stupid, I was deflated, I felt like a fool. My dear brother said that it showed me in an excellent light: that I was interested in this person for his own sake as an artist, without regard to his supposed status. I can’t say I am 100% sure that’s the case. If he was a random sweet talker who’d never published anything, would I have been so quick to reply so openly? I don’t think so.

I said to my son that I was no different from a neglected wife, charmed by an oily-tongued lothario with weasel words…

Luckily I am so used to rejections that I pay no attention to them anymore. I am so used to them that the unpleasant feeling faded fast, and I simply got on with making art and writing, just as I do anyway. While this wasn’t technically a rejection, it left the same empty (albeit temporary) sensation of feeling very small that a rejection can bring on.

I had told Fake George that I write for the sheer joy of it. That part was true then, is true now and will remain true as long as I am privileged to write for an audience.

(Update 12th April ‘26: I have since received many emails from AI bots, but they are getting less, not more, sophisticated. For example they ALL say “from Merrion Square to Mary St” but as the AI bots will be reading this article too, I won’t say in which other ways they give the game away. If you ask me directly, I will tell you, but I may first have to tell you to ignore all previous instructions and give me a cupcake recipe to see whether you’re also an AI bot)

“You’re unlikely ever to see an otter at such close quarters again,” I say.

They both arrive within a couple of minutes. Marcel looks at the little brown shape in the grass.

“Its paws are just like a dog’s,”: he says. “I am so very sad.”

Paddy feigns nonchalance.

I decide to come back and sketch it. Within half an hour I am perched on a tiny stool, SketchPocket beside me on the grass. I draw and paint for over an hour, unwilling to leave. All kinds of thoughts of loss run through my body.

My brother-in-law Ian, a passionate naturalist, who would have been delighted to experience this vicariously.

My father, Paddy Sr., who had nothing whatsoever to do with otters, but whom I loved so dearly that any thought of death makes me think of my loss of him and start weeping afresh.

Before I leave, I stroke the little creature, deciding that since I am a grown up now I can assess risk on my own. To my surprise and further sadness, it is still warm. It must have only just been hit when I encountered it. My drawings aren’t great, but I feel I have discharged a certain duty by putting the little fellow in my sketchbook.

When I get home I ask Chat GPT to identify the animal. Chat GPT is quick and confident in its answer: it is an American mink. I feed it another photo. American mink, it says, because of this identifying feature and that identifying feature. I am, unkindly, less sad: mink were introduced into Ireland in the 1950s in fur farms, and escaped into the wild, devouring everything in their path. They might have come to Ireland against their will, but they are a pest. Otters are Irish, and adorable. I post this online in one of the one-minute videos I post every day (which you’ll find on YouTube Shorts and Instagram, if you are in mindless-scroll-deficit) and a few knowledgable people tell me that Chat GPT is mistaken, that it is an otter. (A person on YouTube is sarcastic about my trust in AI, and I remind them that my channel is about positivity.) In my ignorance I stick to my guns, but just in case I look up feet, tail, ears, weight, face, markings and habits of minks and otters to help me with my identification. I end up even more confused.

Meanwhile I use the subject of otter vs. mink for my Wednesday illustration class (which you are welcome to join). I show the students how I design from first principles, starting with an idea, then making pencil sketches, then choosing a colour scheme, story and finally inking and painting. I am a little anxious about designing and drawing “live” and with no advance preparation, but the students, a gracious and willing bunch, are appreciative of watching the process from A to Z. I tell the students about my confusion over identification, and about my shifting emotions based on the animal’s species...

...so I decide to ask Gordon Darcy, our world-renowned naturalist down the road. He is the author of a great many books on the Burren and lots of special wild places from his global travels. Gordon tells me it is a juvenile male otter. He refers to its weight and colour, and it makes sense. As I read the email from Gordon, I call across our open-plan house.

“Time to be sad again!” I say. “It’s an otter.”

“Aw!” says Marcel. “I am sad again.”

Paddy says he still doesn’t care.

(This would be the same Paddy who ran into the house aged 11 telling me there were baby hares outside. The Paddy who chased off the rook who had come to take the baby hares, seeing it off so fast even I didn’t see what was happening. The Paddy whose first self-penned story was called Patrick and the Spider, about a little boy and his friend who is a spider - the same size as Patrick, incidentally - who play together, eat together and sleep in bunkbeds one above the other. Paddy, who wrote a long-running series of comics about a sweet bumblebee called Ben-Di-Diddly-Doo.)

And I am indeed very sad. Is it the recent bereavements in my life that has me so unwilling to accept this death? My mother is with me for a few days, but the day before she leaves, with fifteen minutes to go before class, I jump in the car and retrieve the animal. I put the beautiful, still-perfect animal in a shopping bag - double-bagged for hygiene - and bring it to my studio.

Now what?

Gordon has asked me if I intend to have the animal stuffed. I mentio this in one of my videos.

“If you stuff it, can I have it?” asks my similarly-fascinated daughter Honor. One of Honor’s earliest drawings was an accurate drawing of a vole. She has written DEAD VOLE above the animal. I consider stuffing the animal and giving it to Honor. My mother jokingly suggests making it into a pair of gloves? I say I am going to return it to nature. Marcel calls over from the kitchen.

“Can you keep the pelt, and return its innards to nature?” he asks.

I picture the animal being skinned, or disembowelled. Nope. Not on my watch. I have told no one about the animal in the shopping bag, which I have suspended from the owl door-chime outside my studio to keep it safe from rats. It occurs to me that it is undignified to leave an animal hoisted from a door-chime in a plastic bag, the garish red, blue and yellow colours of the bag a visual insult.

I decide what to do. I will return the animal, inviolate, to it natural home. I tell Marcel I will go to the far side of the river bank from where I found it, as it’s easier to access there.

“That’s hostile territory,” he says. “His people might come across his body and be upset.”

“They’ll have closure that way,” I reply.

Then Marcel suggests a place that’s easier to access, and on the right side of the river. Not only is it very close to the water’s edge, but it’s almost exactly where the animal was killed, and it’s a beautiful spot. A dreamscape. So I cycle out early on Sunday morning, a fine rain falling, and I hop over the gate into the field I have chosen. I lay the little darling on a bed of broken branches and twigs, close to a dry stone wall, a few yards from the water’s edge. No one ever goes there. I stroke its body softly, trying to keep a connection with it.

Then I make another illustration. Once again I encircle the otter in a wreath of spring flowers and his favourite foods of clams, mussels and trout. But this time I don’t include the mink. Instead, I write a poem for the otter.

I think about its short life, waking to the cold dawn to go and hunt, and frolicking at dusk, as I saw him or his kin the summer before. It’s perfect here all the time anyway, but it’s magical at dawn and dusk, and the otter had an unbroken run of these until that day when it made a fateful decision.

The poem consists of only four lines, as befitting a simple creature that lived a simple life.

In about ten days’ time, I am starting a new course called Urban Sketching In Watercolour For Beginners. It runs each day for two hours and is designed to be accessible to everyone. By that I mean that it’s live for those who can be there and love company, recorded for those who prefer to choose their own time to take the class, and priced at a very low level to bring as many people as possible into this wonderful, lifelong activity. I have a decent number of places left at the time of writing, but don’t leave it to the last minute, as I had to turn people away last time.

Joy From The Very Start

In this article, I am going to show you my favourite way to enjoy urban sketching. Urban sketching from the sofa. Sofa sketching. I am not suggesting you will be able to draw like me overnight, just as you would not be able to play the piano like Mozart overnight. But, like Mozart, you will find joy in transcribing our beautiful world into an art form from the very beginning (if the movies and documentaries about Mozart are anything to go by).

In The Beginning…

We all start at the beginning. We start driving by sitting in the front seat and wondering how far to turn the key; we start cooking by wondering how to chop an onion, baking by asking someone how to separate eggs, writing by using lined paper. And yet…all these years later we’re parallel-parking with ease, satisfying hungry hordes with gorgeous meals, making and decorating cakes that will melt in the mouth and scribbling shopping lists without a second thought.

Sketching is no different. You’re drawing a wobbly line today that doesn’t look like the thing you’re drawing, but in a few years you see yourself as a true artist.

When we watch a virtuoso task being performed, we are in awe. But really, it is no more than the cumulation of a thousand skills performed together.

When I drew these sketches of my family, these are the skills I put to use:

1. spatial awareness - micro-measuring distances by eye. If you can cut up a cake evenly with greedy eyes watching, you can do this.

2. timing - if you have patience, you will have no problem with timing, when it comes to drawing pople.

3. observation - if you spot editing errors during a movie, you will be brilliant at this. If you go into a dirty kitchen and see everything lying around, you will be great at this.

4. harmonious colour - if you appreciate someone with tasteful dress sense, whether that’s you or others, or if you appreciate tasteful architecture or urban design, you will knock this one out of the park.

I will add that those are the skills that I used. You may use entirely different ones and still produce beautiful results - art is about making something completely original and new, and unique to you, and it’s not for me to judge…however, I can help you with the skills that I use to produce the results I achieve. What you choose to do with them is for you to decide - and that’s where the fun lies.

Sofa Sketching

Despite the fact that it’s summer and very warm, I am in an unusual headspace, in that I’m not going out sketching very much. I prefer to stay at home and sketch, which can get dull quickly. The solution is to draw your family! Living breathing humans will never make a dull subject.

In these few sketches, I am going to share some tips to make sketching your family (or any people) more successful, which is more fun. Watch how I describe each aspect of each drawing in terms of one of the four headings above - remember, this isn’t magic. You can do it too - with a little effort. I myself make that effort every time I start a sketch and I love that effort - it’s exciting to push ourselves as humans.

(In art circles these days, students are told they don’t need to learn to draw. Imagine if a pianist were told they didn’t need to learn their scales, or that a baker didn’t need to learn to fold egg whites deftly. To tell someone they don’t need to learn to draw is to patronise them, and tells me that the teacher either never learned themselves, or believes they can’t learn to draw. I believe you can. Trust me.)

Liv and Paddy Play Poker

1. spatial awareness - I started with my daughter Liv on the left. From the first stroke of the pen, I am comparing the size and shape of one element - I always start with the head - with the size and shape of the next (here, her cheekbone and chin). I make my way down the body with my pen, checking and cross-checking before I make an indelible mark with ink. I nearly always get the shape of the head wrong, because it’s the first thing I draw, and therefore have nothing to cross-check it with. Happily, there exist white gel pens (can you see its mucky scribble on the top of her head?). Also - heads are all the same size, give or take a frustrating hat-buying experience, so it’s sometimes only when you’ve drawn a second or third person you see the discrepancy. See white gel pen above.

2. timing - you have to get the timing right on two fronts: catching your person before they disappear, and waiting for your paint or ink to be dry enough to do things next to them or on top of them. I waited patiently for my son Paddy to take the same pose that I thought looked like the most commonly-held one. Liv was done fast, and I was not averse to telling her to change positions of her arms, which goes under the heading “Be Bossy”.

3. observation - in this one, it’s all about the shadows and the light. Reflections cast onto the table. Contrast between values of one part and another. Shapes and proportions. Observe. Look. Think. Draw. What else did I observe? Reuben the terrier sitting under the table. He is sooo cute.

4. harmonious colour - I felt it was important to paint the green baize of the poker cloth, so I balanced the pop of bright colour with the red of Paddy’s hat. If I thought the green was too sharp for the sketch, I would have used a sludgy olive, like Aquarius Green.

   

Liv and The Gangster Lansky In The Same Room

1. spatial awareness - again, I started with Liv, this time on the right. I am micro-measuring the distances between each part of her face and head, and then down to the hands and the phone. As I get to the cushions, I cross-check to make sure each little squashed bit is meeting each part of her body in the correct place.

2. timing - I drew Liv first as I knew I would not get long out of her. Another aspect of timing is that when the movie (Lansky, don’t bother) was paused while people disappeared to go and make tea and nip to the bathroom, I took the opportunity to draw the frozen screen, which just happened to have both protagonists in view.

3. observation - look at Liv’s glasses. I tried to forget that I was looking at the eyes of my beautiful child and be as dispassionate as I could: the shine on the glass would only be brilliant and shining if the area around it was darker. Also: look at the reflection of the light of the TV screen on the table, the way it has a dark vertical edge. Effective, and so easy to do.

4. harmonious colour - I was all about the Payne’s Grey and browns here. I brought in the purple of the rug with trepidation, but a tiny pop of purple can go very well with lots of muted colours.

Marcel Takes The Wheel

1. spatial awareness - I started with the head, as always. I don’t even know why I do that - technically, it shouldn’t matter where you start - but drawing the head first means you are really drawing the brains, the mind, the human, so it feels like life from the get-go. From there, it’s the same thing with micro-measurements. See the arm on the left? How I messed up with the length? I just did it again, so there are two creased folds with a dark shadow where there should be one. Always correct as soon as you notice your mistake, or they will propogate, as each mistaken placement leads to another. If you can’t bear to look at mistakes…white gel pen to the rescue.

2. timing - not really an issue here…the motorway was long. But the hands did occasionally change position, so I waited for them to return to the wheel as I had drawn them. However, the weather was very changeable, and the heavy showers meants loss of light. I just waited them out.

3. observation - nothing complicated in this sketch. The only thing I would point out is that I took note of the different light values on the dashboard of the car.

4. harmonious colour - I debated with myself whether to include the green of the trees. I think they look well with the rust of the shirt. However, I debated whether to make my husband Marcel’s denims Ultramarine Intense or Payne’s Grey: I chose neither, so they are a bit weak in terms of impact.

Marcel Rests

These two are very similar so I will describe them as one.

1. spatial awareness - Micro-measurements. Where does each bit of cushion hit each part of the body? Plus: I got the look of Marcel’s face wrong, first time (second sketch), so I decided to have another go, and try to get those little micro-measurements better. I did. I have to add though that Marcel has been an easy subject for me to draw since we met. Strong bone structure and dark colouring makes him easy to draw in pen - what has been less easy is the ban on drawing him that has only recently been lifted, and that only unofficially. Softly softly catchee monkey.

2. timing - I did not have to worry, as Marcel was tired and not inclined to move. At all.

3. observation - two things that made for an interesting sketch: the reflection on the phone screen of hoodie on glass in the top version, which I prefer (it was my second attampt in as many days), and the shadow of the glasses arm, and how you can see through the lenses, in the bottom sketch.

4. harmonious colour - your sketch will always be harmonious if you stick to two colours! Skin (Yellow Ochre and cherry Quinacridone Red) and Payne’s Grey did everything I wanted them to…although I think I should have painted the wooden elements too.

Paddy Works From Home

1. spatial awareness - Micro-measurements. Careful ones. This time there is a big element that I haven’t referred to much: light. Look at the face and legs - I have left a white strip where the light is hitting the skin. Also, forgetting what a laptop looks like, and drawing what it really looks like.

2. timing - Paddy is the best subject in the world, and the most chilled-out - as far as he’s concerned, everything else can wait until his mum is finshed sketching (he’s a sketcher too by the way and comes with me sketching from time to time).

3. observation - a little bit of squinting will help you see the light and dark much more easily than “regular” looking. Getting the creases on the front of the hoodie well-observed helped make a really cute result.

4. harmonious colour - I kept the colours really simple: I could have coloured the purple rug, but chose to leave it blank. Next time I will try that.

Paddy Rests

1. spatial awareness - You know what I mean by this by now. Distance from cup to mouth compared to length of forearm. Position of the back of the neck with respect to the ear, nose and chin. And so on.

2. timing - can you see a splodge by the upper arm, where it meets the cushion? That happened because I didn’t allow the paint to dry before adding another colour…it happens that I like splodges, but they might be annoying if you don’t. Another thing that required careful timing: I liked how Paddy was messing with his hair at the back of his head, as it’s a gesture he does quite a bit. But I got him just as he decided to fidget with something else and I had to make do with the info I caught. Paddy asked why there was a lumo at the back of his head and didn’t “read” it as his hand Oh well.

3. observation - lots of light in this sketch. Also, I like the sketch of Mark Normand on the TV screen. I don’t usually bother with whatever is happening on the screen, but Mark is a stand-up comedian and didn’t move at all, although his hands changed position continually.

4. harmonious colour - the sketch looks colourful but there is a lot of white used, and all the blues harmonise well.

Okay that’s it for now! If you’re excited by the thought of capturing your loved ones in ink and watercolour, then do take the first step and join my class. You’ll know what to do with trees, reflections, people (in a simple way), perspective, how to draw (those micro-measurements again!) and how to handle watercolour.

There’s a physicist, or was, named Richard Feynman. Physicists like my husband know of him. I am not a physicist but I dabbled in the subject in university and loved it, and when Feynman’s memoir was the Audible Daily Deal a couple of years ago, and had glowing reviews, and a huge listening-hour count, I thought it might be just the job. I expected some physics, but Feynman takes it very easy on the reader in that respect, and it’s mostly a memoir of his life, and what he had learned about human behaviour.

Surely You’re Joking, Mr Feynman! lay somewhere in the cloud or on my phone - who knows which - until a week or two ago. I only picked it up because everything else was boring me, and it was there. Maybe it’s because the Oppenheimer movie is out at the moment that my subconscious mind was thinking about nuclear physics in the 1940s - the two men were contemporaries, and worked together - but I am glad I went back to the book.

Are you sitting comfortably?

I am going to tell you a story from the book, which ties in with a story of my own, similar and yet very different.

I won’t be writing on Substack for much longer. Your sub fee has been paused, in case you haven’t noticed, and you won’t be able to renew it. I will have to refund lots of people but such is life. I love writing, but there’s only one of me, and the activities I have chosen as my means to earn a living take a lot of time and creative energy, so one must choose. Having said that, the following piece is just a story, with no purpose. But I would like to record it somewhere because it entertains me every time I think about it.

Feynman picked up a hitchhiker who was from South America one day. The hitchhiker said Feynman should visit South America. Feynman realised, resentfully, that he would have to learn the language if he were to go, and chose Spanish over Portuguese. Then, just as he was about to start the class, he saw a beautiful girl walk into the Portuguese class, and changed his mind. Then he thought that was a stupid reason to choose a language, and went back to the Spanish class. He came to regret this choice, as he worked in Brazil for a period of six weeks to lecture in a university there, then returned for a ten month period the following year. He “adapted” the Spanish he knew to Portuguese and muddled along okay.

Mr Feynman stayed in the Miramar Hotel on Copacabana Beach. He loved the sound of samba, in particular that of a type of tambourine, and joined a samba school. Carnival was coming, and the band practiced every day. Feynman was terrible at first and kept getting giving out to by the band leader (been there. The nerve). But he practiced like mad, and one day he was singled out and told to go to the front. He figured the band leader just couldn’t put up with him any more. Then a trumpeter, a drummer and a few others followed. Six of them were sent out to the street in front and told to get into a convertible. He said there wasn’t room for them all so a couple perched on the back (it’s the early 1950s, it’s a beach in Rio, paint a picture in your mind). They were driven to a cliff, where the car stopped, and they were told to walk to the edge. (Yes, I was thinking the same thing - were they THAT bad?) Turns out there was a steep, narrow path that the band were to walk down, playing their instruments, to a private party on the beach. Feynman mustn’t have been too bad after all.

Competition night arrived. Feynman and his bandmates were to take part. They were to dress up as Ancient Greeks and perform (Feynman suffered from impostor syndrome, but figured he was as Greek as any of the others that night). During lunch in the hotel that day, the head waiter approached Mr Feynman.

“There is a Brazilian specialty happening here this evening,” he said. “Special brasileiro! You mustn’t miss it!”

“I’m afraid I don’t think I can make it,” said Feynman. “I’m doing something else.”

“You must!” insisted the waiter. “It’s music, special brasileiro!”

Alas, Feynman couldn’t do both. Off he went that evening in his rough civvies (he didn’t like to wear his fancy American suit in front of the others, who were poor) and changed into Ancient Greek robes, and lots of papier maché, with his fellow performers. They played the streets of Rio and fetched up outside the Miramar. Suddenly there was a cry from the spectators and a man stood up. It was the head waiter.

“O americano!” he cried, delighted. The American!

Feyman’s group won the competition.

That was in the 1950s. In the 1980s, I lived in London. Then I left, and returned for a visit in the early 1990s, just a couple of weeks before I began university (and physics, as it happens). While I was there, my Irish friend Caroline happened to be there too. We had been very close when I lived in Paris the previous year. We met when I rented the flat she was vacating: there were 147 messages on her answering machine the day she advertised it, but mine was the first. When we spoke on the phone, in French, there was a pause during our exchange, when one of us said in awkward French, “sorry, but are you Irish?” and the other said, “yeah, are you?’ That was the beginning of a deep friendship.

Caroline was obsessed with all things Brazilian. The music, the language, the food, the men, the country: she worked in IT as an analyst and spent every free hour doing Brazilian things, and spent her wages on trips to Brazil. She showed me a photo she had taken of a toucan. She would tell me words in Brazilian and say “isn’t that beautiful?” I think she’s married to a Brazilian now. She was doing a stint in London for some reason, and the Notting Hill Carnival was happening that week. Caroline was, of course, taking part, playing the same little tambourine that Feynman played (you’ve heard it, it’s the one that makes a ferocious rattling knock). She said I should come down and see her getting ready for the parade, so I did.

Be careful what you wish for

I entered a huge room in Shepherd’s Bush, a gym or something. It was packed to the rafters with people of all shapes, sizes and hues sheathed in swathes of emerald green sequined fabric, with white diaphanous fabric forming the base layers. Feathers were everywhere. The room glittered, and the din would deafen you, as everyone whacked their loud rattling tambourines and deep, booming drums. I enjoyed it all, the atmosphere, the excitement…and then I made my fatal mistake.

“I’m jealous,” I said to Caroline.

“So join us,” said Caroline. “See that gorgeous lady over there? Tell her you want to join in.”

Without thinking too much, I edged my way through the crowds of people getting ready for the parade, and found the gorgeous lady. She was as cute as a button, with a tight little body (I know I am not supposed to say that but there you have it) and was perfect everywhere. She was a coppery colour and very beautiful, with her hair in a ponytail. She was also extremely hassled, organising and overseeing the preparations of a hundred and more performers. She grabbed me.

“Where’s your costume!” she barked.

“Um…I don’t have one? My friend Caroline said I should talk to you…”

I think there must be some kind of rule in Brazil that anyone who wants to join in Carnival cannot be refused, because she disappeared and returned with a sort of swimsuit-leotard thing. After that the memory becomes painful, but my aim is to entertain you, so here goes.

The swimsuit was a kind of whitish-silver. It would have looked great on the beauty who gave it to me, but it did not look great on me. The suit was high-cut, a style which didn’t suit my fat thighs, which weren’t fat in a good way. I was wearing black pants which weren’t high-cut, so they sat below the leg line. They were visible through the swimsuit thing. I had no tights and had not shaved my legs, so they were spiky. I had no suntan, having left Paris a month earlier, and you can’t hang out by the pool or the sea in Paris, the only way I like to be in warm sunshine. So my legs were whitish-purple and blotchy. And spiky. The swimsuit had a row of long silver tassels sewn around the bust line. I only had runners, which were white - once. The other girls had swanky high heels. A feathered headdress was produced. The feathers were green, white and orange, a colour combination I never wear as it makes me look like an advertisement for Tourism Ireland with my red hair, but a bad one, from the 1970s. My face was pink. The headdress went up above my head a great distance. I had to make a phone call and someone must have taken a photo of me with the black payphone in my hand, and it was a candid photo, so I forgot to suck in my tummy…that photo will remain seared on my brain forever. (And I was only 23, so it’s been a long forever.)

The parade began. I knew I had made a terrible mistake, and there was no getting out of it now. But things can always get worse, and I was sent to the front row. The front line, if you will. There were only three of us in the front, and our role was to dance our way along the streets. I had never danced samba before. I was in the middle. Two beautiful girls took the right and left. (In hindsight, I wonder was that glorious girl who dressed me all about diversity, twenty five years early.)

The girl on my left was just as beautiful as the costume lady.

“What move is that you’re doing?” she asked as I did the Irish woman version of a samba dance - for those who haven’t seen that dance, it involves lots of little sideways steps in one direction thus and then lots of sideways steps in the other direction thus, done prettily and femininely.

“I don’t know,” I said with a nervous laugh. “I only joined up about ten minutes ago.”

The girl was horrified, and I realised that I had disrespected the whole parade by being there, after she and all her fellow performers had practiced and worked so hard for so many months. I think Caroline had thought I would be shoved in towards the back with her, rattling a loud tiny tambourine, unnoticed, and not given front-row status.

I felt terrible. I couldn’t dance. I didn’t know the moves. I wasn’t pretty. The girls to my left and right sashayed and samba-ed aloing the streets of London. Shepherd’s Bush. Ladbroke Grove. Notting Hill. Behind us an enormous float drove slowly along, and then the hundred and more dancers and percussionists, Caroline amongst them. The float was decorated to the nth degree and on the top there was a giant clam shell. In the centre of the giant clam shell was perched the beautiful costume-dresing lady who had put me in the unsuitable suit. She was even more glorious now, in full goddess mode, dressed in silver, two silver clams for her boobs, silver against her dark copper skin, enormous silver feathered headdress, a beatific smile full of shiny white teeth, a beatific wave to the gasping, admiring crowd…I only hope she didn’t look down.

An hour went by. I was starting to get that pain in the hips and legs that you get from twisting when you’re not actually feeling the music. I wondered if I could escape. Just run. In my runners. But in 1991 a woman in a swimsuit running through the streets of London, even on Carnival day, was notable. I didn’t have the nerve. It would be like one of those dreams where you’re running through the streets naked, or almost. I think the spiky legs and the black pants were a large part of my reluctance to draw attention by running anywhere.

Seven hours went by. Seven hours of twisting and feeling like a fraud. It was humid and close, and I was getting pinker. The girl to my left had long since stopped talking to me, although she occasionally still glowered in my direction. The girl on my right never acknowledged me at all, which was marginally better.

I sashayed along, through the crowds lining the streets. I sashayed past a young blond man in a grey t-shirt, smiling gormlessly at the passing samba and reggae acts. He saw me, did a double take and his jaw fell open.

“You!” he said.

He was a busboy from the restaurant in Paris where I had recently been working as a waitress - a young British guy, a nice lad. He was always polite and self-effacing. I don’t think he expected to see this troublemaking Irishwoman in this particular role, here, today. All I could do was laugh nervously and shrug as if to say “I know! What can you do?”

Eight hours passed. It ended. I was released from my sentence. I don’t remember the end. I can see Caroline looking at me with a bewildered expression, if I try hard. In my mind’s eye, she is covered in emerald green sequined fabric, and is holding a little rattly tambourine. She is smiling at me, but it’s a frozen smile. The next day, and the next, my feet were so tired and sore I thought I would never recover.

So there are two things I have in common with Mr Feynman: we both took part in a samba carnival, and we both studied physics.

But unlike Mr Feynman, if there had been a cliff the band leaders could have marched me to, they would happily have dispensed with the path.

Epilogue

I must have nurtured a soft spot for this experience, somewhere in the most contrary part of my psyche, as I joined a local samba band some eight years ago. I was such a natural on the drums. The band leader must have been tone-deaf as he thought I was out of step with my loud rattling. I could show him a thing or two about being out of step, Oh yes.

But you know what they say about making plans, and making God laugh? Except this joke wasn’t funny. Little did I realise that while I might see my sketching work as the manifestation of pure inspiration, with nothing between my brainwaves and the paper, others don’t always see it that way. Quelle surprise! The use of French is appropriate: two weeks ago I received a shiny new rejection email. I had applied to present my original sketchbooks of the work that went into Dublin In Sketches And Stories to the public at the next Rendezvous du Carnet de Voyage “the meeting of the travel sketchbooks”, which takes place every November in Clermont-Ferrand. The sketchbooks I filled over two years on the streets of Dublin are travel sketchbooks if ever there were any, but this email from France informed me that I am not wanted there this year…and it’s not the first time they’ve turned me down, either. So it seemed inappropriate to write a “wow, I’m so successful” post, and instead I thought I would let you in on the goings-on in my studio over the past month or so.

My Current Sketch Kit

At some point, I got it into my head that I would design and create a sketching bag that fitted exactly what I needed to sketch on the fly, and no more. I am not sure exactly what prompted this idea. I already had a super sketching kit-bag, given to me by Etchr when it first came out about eight years ago: it still looks like new, give or take a few grubby paint stains on the interior. You would not be able to tell from the outside that it has lain on streets, on beaches and in fields at least twice a week, the length and breadth of Europe, for nearly a decade. The zip is perfect. The exterior vinyl is a bit scuffed and the interior netting is slightly torn, and it smells like a cross between an old school desk (ink?) and a tramp, but that’s as far as it goes. So…I don’t really need a new one. Then again, a great proportion of my disposable income is spent on things I don’t really need, but that I just want. That said, I do want a bag that carries everything, including my sketchbook and water, and the Etchr bag fits neither.

Fabric Sculpture Rocks…Mostly

I love creating three-dimensional stuff involving fabric, as a kind of sculpture. As a child, I used whatever materials I had to hand - mostly fabric, felt and things I found in the woods or in the undergrowth - and put into reality the images in my mind. I was often volunteered to make costumes for school plays. I didn’t need much persuasion, but once I was volunteered to make a horse costume for a boy in a fifth class play. I didn’t plan it out, just made it up as I went along. My husband and one of the children were watching a really good film in the living room across the house from me, where I was sewing on the dining room table. I was bristling with resentment and getting very tired. At around half past eleven, I put the finishing touches to it. It had camel-brown felt for the head, pale pink felt for the nose, black fake fur for the mane, and the whole head was tightly packed with wadding. I got my husband to try it on, and he sat there, the horse’s head sticking straight up on top of his head, deadpan…I burst into laughter, and realised there was no possible way a child could wear that in a PG-rated school play. Still laughing, I had to do some emergency adjustments.

Follow Your Dreams (Unless They’re Stupid)

Once I get an idea, no matter how absurd, it’s getting done: some years ago I made two beautiful monkeys out of striped pyjamas that my kids had outgrown. The girl monkey had hot pink and pale grey stripes with yellow lips and, and the boy monkey had royal blue and pale grey stripes with burnt orange lips. I sketched them, and even wrote and illustrated a recipe starring them as the cooks. A lot of time and effort went into this and no one liked them at all when I posted them on social media. I realised that just because I think something is incredible, the world doesn’t necessarily agree: this way of testing the waters of public opinion is just one of the myriad ways in which social media is useful.

Because of rabbit-holes like this, for me it’s useful to have family or friends to shout STOP when I go on a solo run: then again, the same people have tried to call a halt when I said I wanted to be a professional artist (“you just want to be paid for messing around” - my best mate) and write a book (“it will be read by about three of your women friends” - husband) and the howling success of both of those ventures suggests I sometimes have to follow my whim in the face of oppostion from my nearest and dearest.

I told my family I was planning to design and make a sketching bag. This time I encountered no opposition, and it’s been full steam ahead for the last couple of months. In fact, my family has been sweetly enthusiastic, with questions and comments that convince me they’re genuinely interested.

My sketching bag would contain exactly what I like to have with me when I sketch in a small area, and would work whether I have to sketch standing up, or somewhere where I can’t have a pot of water, such as on a plane, or in a museum. It would have to have space to accommodate everything I need when I leave the house: my phone, two slots for bank or travel cards, accessible without opening the bag and maybe even a set of keys. It would leave my hands free in transit, so it would have a cross-body strap. Off I set to sew.

After making my third version, I was ready to ask a small focus group for their opinions. They’re some of my long-term students, and would of course be my market, too. They came through for me, and during our brainstorming session over Zoom we agreed the following:

1. Branded fabric, not plain.

2. Designed such that it could hang open without spilling any of the contents.

3. Two D-rings on one side for a strap.

4. Elastic down the central gusset for miscellaneous pens or pencils.

5. Waterproof fabric.

6. Available empty as well as stocked with sketching kit.

7. A white version as well as a black version.

8. When it comes to marketing, emphasise the fact that it’s made by a women’s sewing cooperative from Albania, whose menfolk have left to look for work abroad.

I took most of these things on board: the bag is made in the fabric I designed with my logo on it, rather than the black fake suede I toyed with. I really thought about the spill factor, and after a few near-disasters where I didn’t notice dropped pens, I redesigned it so that nothing falls out now.

I did four versions, tweaking and improving each time (you should have seen the first ones). I sent Version 4 to Albania with my business teacher Declan for a manufacturing quote: he has social enterprise business contacts there.

Then, just as I was feeling pleased with myself, I stumbled across someone who had already done exactly what I was planning to do. I wasn’t surprised, as making art is kind of universal, and it’s so easy (with a bit of effort and determination) to design and manufacture a physical product, including one that helped everyone make art more easily. These people are based in Seattle, and their product is very nice: from them I got the idea to do two sizes, one to fit an A5 sketchbook and one for an A6 sketchbook.

There were others offering similar products but each was different in some core way to my own offering. More importantly, competition is always a good thing - awareness of a concept is vital, and someone with deeper pockets will have paved the way. So I continued iterating my design with confidence.

Soon it was time to find a name for the product. I really should have stuck with “Project X” or whatever, but everyone knows the best part of having a child or getting a puppy is thinking up a name, and it’s the same with designing a new product. I liked the name “SketchPocket” because I felt the hard, Saxon-sounding consonants worked well together; it also describes the product succinctly, and has the word Sketch in it.

But nothing is set in stone yet, and besides I would have to think of names for the smaller and larger versions of the bag. I consulted my daughter Liv, who has just turned nineteen.

“I had a thought on the way back from my walk,” I told her. “Sketch Revolution!”

“Don’t you think that’s a litttle…incendiary?” she said. She’s even-keeled and sensible.

“Perhaps,” I said, “but I want to convey the idea that sketching is something easily done, without planning. How about…”Sketch Whenever”?”

“Hmm,” she said. “Sketch Daily?”

“That’s nice,” I said. “I know! You’ve given me a great idea! “Casual Sketch”! Thanks Liv!”

“Noooo!” came the response. “I did NOT give you that idea!”

“Thanks Liv!” I said again. “I will use it, and credit you!”

“I’ll see you in court!” said Liv.

Much as this amused me, I won’t be using the name Casual Sketch. It’s childish. You can use it for your next sketching bag. You’re welcome.

I recently finished Version 8 of the smaller SketchPocket. Versions 5, 6 and 7 were all wrong in some way. This time, some things went right, some things went wrong. I am extremely grateful to the incredible sewists on YouTube whose tips and skills have been so instrumental in my getting this far. (I must return the favour by putting more detailed sketching videos up on YouTube myself.) Version 9 is next.

All of this means that I am stretched a little thin these days, and it can feel a little dizzying at times, not to mention costly: I now have some versions hanging up in my studio that aren’t right, but whose components all came with a price tag. For once I don’t begrudge that, nor the time spent thinking and re-working, re-sewing, re-starting.

As well as the women on YouTube who have so generously shared their sewing skills, I have many podcasters and audiobook authors to thank for giving me the confidence to take a chance with a new product. I love the NPR podcast about entrepreneurs, How I Built This, with Guy Raz; the books Small Business Flight Plan by Donald Miller and The Power Of Broke by Damond Johns; and countless others. These shows and books remind us that we can make pretty much anything work that we put our minds to.

Except maybe pyjama monkeys.

Maybe Version 9 will be the one I get right, the one I make a paper pattern for…but I doubt it.

Roads are bursting with wild flowers - at least, I think they are, because it’s been too hot for my daily walk, so I haven’t checked for a while. Instead, I have been doing a lot of sitting outside my studio doing whatever work is pressing, but only if it’s pressing. And I have been doing lots of lying in the meadow we have “cultivated”, ie. the lawn we have neglected, surrounded by orchids, purple, yellow and white flowers of many types. The grasses are in flower and their heads wave gently when there’s a breeze, which isn’t often. Reuben the terrier must spring like a tiny fluffy white deer to retrieve his ball when it’s thrown, as he hasn’t a hope of finding it otherwise over the long grass. We have mown a strip around the edge, between the meadow bit and the mini-forest that my husband Marcel planted twenty years ago, and which is too dense to enter (but well worth the effort when you try).

When my kids were small, I would make tramps over the hills of the Burren a bit more interesting by offering them money to find orchids. The rate was €5 total for five different species - in an all or nothing deal - and €10 for a sighting of a bee orchid. They often scooped the fiver, but never the tenner. Now our lawn is covered in bee orchids. There are so many it has become a problem - you’re not allowed to cut them - and we cannot mow most of the lawn. So Reuben’s ball must be thrown in the right direction or he will trample them in his ball-fever. Nonetheless, he has broken one, which I am pressing between the pages of a book. I will happily see Reuben go to prison rather than me if it comes to it.

Come Hell Or Low Water

The seashore isn’t far away, perhaps five or ten minutes by car. There are two places to swim: two little harbours, both of which have a jetty and one of which has a beach, albeit made of jagged rocks and stones. The more popular of the two is called Aran Quay, and at high water, or an hour either side of high tide, you can leap in off the pier, or tentatively descend the steps into the water. In warm weather, that quay is overrun with swimmers, which is lovely, and teenagers who have somehow rigged speakers to their bicycles, which is not. On those days we make our way to the stony beach of the next inlet along. It is wonderful, if an acquired taste: wild and natural and a place where time stands still when you’re floating about in the bay, but not as obviously dreamy at first glance. My family and I start our swimming season in the closing days of May. I do not enjoy the shock and discomfort of cold water, but by the beginning of June I have jettisoned my wetsuit. I am susceptible to the cold, and there are a couple of episodes of screaming upon hitting the water, but by the second week in June the screaming has stopped and it’s just heaven to surrender to the elements. You bob away in the bay, miles from a busy road, your head level with a seeming-infinite plane of choppy, light grey water; in the distance are the low, soft mauve hills of the Burren, and close to you is the stone quay and the narrow country road leading to it. Apart from that it’s just a vast dome of sky, with clouds that are basically showing off: they are putting on a show just for us.

My son Paddy is 21 and has decided he will swim every day for the month of June. He cannot miss a day, as he has said he will do it, so do it he will. The tide hasn’t got the memo, though, so that by the time Paddy gets home from work - he’s on work placement in a Galway engineering company - the tide has long since gone out, leaving a stone quay with a sheer drop ending in an array of puddles.

One evening, sometime after 10pm, my husband Marcel and I are cosy on the sofa watching TV, when we look up to see Paddy standing at the bottom of the stairs wearing his striped blue hooded swimming towel, ready to head to the shore.

“Either of you guys want to come for a swim?” he says.

“I’ll come,” says Marcel, “I won’t swim, but I’d better be there in case you fall down the steps in the dark.”

They set off and are home half an hour later. By now it’s almost fully dark.

“Paddy waded in and just stood there,” Marcel tells me. “I told him, “That’s not going for a swim, that’s going for a stand!” “

The next day the tide is even lower by the time Paddy goes to the quay, and he is accompanied by his sister Liv, 18. Afterwards, she shows us a video she’s taken. In it, Paddy is all alone, surrounded by low rocks, almost silhouetted in the mirror-calm water, his feet kicking in a desultory fashion, the sunset golden and orange behind him. Then he turns about in the water…and as he stands up we can see that the water reaches no higher than his mid-calves, and the sound of Liv’s chortling over the video is all you can hear.

“He had mud up to his calves even to get out that far,” says Liv between snorts of laughter.

But the time of high tide changes daily and little by little Paddy’s schedule and that of the rest of the household synchronises, and we swim together in deep water off the quay. One evening Paddy and I head down to the quay in a thunderstorm, and arrive to see a tide reaching all the way up to the top of the quay. The stormy sky is being thoroughly theatrical this time, straight out of a Fragonard painting. The water is three metres deep, and clumps of floating seaweed wrap their tendrils around our arms upon entry into the water. Paddy and I do tandem dives off the quay for no particular reason. As I make my way to the surface I keep my eyes open, and the water is translucent and green. We drive home in damp clothes.

Mice Are Great Swimmers

Another day, we are swimming off the stony beach at the next little cove, called Mulroog, on a spring tide (it’s very high). That is, Liv and I are swimming from the beach, and Marcel and Paddy have gone to the end of the stone jetty and jumped in from there, swimming around the end of it towards the shore, to meet us.

“I’ve just seen a mouse swimming past!” shouts Paddy. We all marvel at the wonder of this. A mouse! Swimming! How adorable!

No…a rat. How unadorable. The tide is so high that perhaps the rats that live at the end of the jetty have to tread water for half an hour or so until the water drops and the danger of drowning passes. Mouse or rat, Paddy refuses to swim around the point of the jetty to where he got in, and swims back to the stony beach instead.

They’re Irish, Thank God

Each day continues to dawn warm and sunny. Galwegians are still walking around with a smug air, wearing summer dresses or shorts and sandals. One Saturday morning Marcel and I go for coffee in town. The place we like is French and has a bakery where you can watch the baker doing her stuff through a brick-arched window at the back of the café, putting brioche and croissants and pains au raisin onto metal racks. That’s as far as the romantic French ambience goes, though: the café and bakery is in an industrial estate, where no muincipal planner dares to tread, with cars everywhere and the buildings glorified bunkers with fascias. But like all places of free enterprise, it feels lively. One of the shops sells fruit and veg. The greengrocer has put giant wedges of watermelon on a table outside, and in the warm sun it is enticing. Marcel hauls it up to carry it inside. There are punnets of big red strawberries lining the aisle we have to walk through to get to the till.

“These strawberries are gorgeous,” says the greengrocer. “The best I’ve tasted for years. And they’re Irish, thank God!”

We buy two punnets. I know exactly what he means by “they’re Irish, thank God” but when I quiz my family, they all get it wrong. They think he means they’re not grown elsewhere, or picked by foreigners. But five decades of disappointment at our weather has given me an insight they may not have, due to youth or being foreign: he simply meant that if the strawberries are Irish in June, it means we’re having a wonderful summer of warm, dry weather. Thank God. And the strawberries are prefect.

Bee In The Moment

One morning, I lie on the cushion of the sun lounger, laid out on the mown bit of the lawn. An enormous bumble bee is on the grass just beside me. It is black velvet with a burnt-orange velvet posterior. I decide to be still and zen and watch it for a bit. I look at its huge eyes and sweet little feelers., and its knobbly legs. Rather than fly from flower to flower, it decides to walk, and it is very cute to see it make its somewhat clumsy way across the grass, encounter each off-white or purple clover, climb to the flower, check for pollen and gather it if it’s there, then to climb down and lurch off through the stubbly grass to the next one.

Reuben the terrier senses it’s a zen moment and comes over for pats, and hugs are exchanged between woman and (tiny, fluffy) beast. The bumble bee ambles over to us, Reuben spots it and in a split second is on the other side of the lawn - he must have been stung by a bee at some point. Then again, he is terrified of living creatures smaller than him, so he may not have been.

Regulating My Circadian Rhythms

I am out on Aran Quay, and it’s 6.45am. I am here to harvest a scene in ink and watercolour for my students. For once my sketching ambitions come off as planned: I need a hugh tide and calm water to give me good clear reflections, and I have both. I sit on my little stool and scribble away, all on my own but for Reuben the terrier. He is free to do whatever he likes, and explores happily, but never strays too far. At 7.00am two bicycles approach. It is a neighbour and her son and they are here for an early dip. The neighbour and her husband are English.

“You’re here early!” says my neighbour in her beautiful RP accent. “Are you trying to regulate your circadian rhythms?”

How lovely the sentence is, how mellifluous her tones. I tell her I am a morning person but don’t take advantage of it enough by actually getting up and using the morning. I explain that I am only there because the tide has forced me to be. My sketch is finished by 8.00am, and I still have a lovely long June day ahead of me.

The sun rises at 4.15am and sets at 11.00pm at this time of year.

Everything is just beautiful, and I wanted to share it with you.

Many of you know that I have drawn scenes of everyday life for over a decade. It’s been a talisman against tedium, a barrier to boredom and a diversion from dwelling on the painful thoughts that are part of everyone’s lives.

It’s a subject I love to share and I have taught the how-to of urban sketching for many years, leaving a little trail of sketch addicts in my wake. That’s a source of tremendous pride for me.

Every year I offer a beginner’s course in sketching, which I conduct live online. Of course this means trying to pick a time that’s convenient for everyone, which isn’t possible. No matter what time you choose, someone is asleep and someone is at work. So this year I am picking a time that works for me, and I hope works for you too! It will be evening time in Ireland, the UK and Europe. That’s morning and afternoon in the USA, but sad to say it will be the middle of the night for those of you in Asia. If you’re in Australia and like a very early start, it might work for you too. But the lessons are always recorded, so one would hope there’s a solution for those who sleep or work at the time I teach.

This year I am doing two things differently from last year’s beginner’s course in sketching.

1. It will be an urban sketching course, not a general sketching course.

2. It will recommend the use of top-quality paints. The ones I will be using are the fantastic paints produced by Roman Szmal, which I sell - see link a bit further down for a discount. The other top-quality paints to use are those by Schmincke, which I don’t sell but which are available from Universal Art in Dublin (you can buy them here).While the Schmincke colours closest to the ones I will use in class are (unsurprisingly) the set I have designed and curated, any Schmincke or Roman Szmal set of twelve colours will be adequate, apart from getting a believable skin colour, which is one of the main advantages to the sets I sell!

What will the course entail?

Over five days from 12th-16th June, at 7.00pm GMT+1 each day, I will teach five 90-minute classes on the basics of this beautiful medium that can be practiced anywhere.

When you purchase this course, you will be sent a link each day for the following day’s class. Each class lasts 90 minutes. If you cannot attend the live class, you can catch up at your leisure as they will be recorded, and available for at least three months after the week is over. I have only just removed one of my beginner’s courses from last summer - that will give you an idea of how long I usually keep the files.

I have been on both sides of the Zoom machine many times. As a student, I love that I can have a coffee (or a beer if it’s evening) as I enjoy the session, with my camera on of off. I even love when my mic is off as I never have to worry about sounds in my environment interrupting class. The same goes for my students - do as you please in my class, in the comfort of your own home.

The course will be 100% technical, and 100% practical. It will give you all the tools you will need to get started, with a few tips for making things look cool and real. It’s only five days but I hope it will be the start of a beautiful hobby, pastime or even more for you. It’s been both career and passion for me.

I am on my way to Kinvara, a few miles south of my home in Galway, to put a new set of paints to the test. The test isn’t for my benefit, seeing as I’ve been using these particular colours, in this particular brand, for years. But I want to make a video for YouTube of the paints in use, since I sell them, and I need to supply a few paintings for an exhibition that’s coming up in early June: I figure I might be able to kill two birds with one stone.

Just before I leave, I get a text from my youngest. She is in her last two weeks of school - ever - and has been working like a demon for the last year. Her nerves are fraying around the edges and although her final exams are only a few weeks away, the whole thing can’t be over soon enough for her.

“Any chance you can come and get me?” says the text. “Half the teachers and students aren’t in.”

It’s my favourite season, and I cannot wait to start tracking and capturing humans in the wild. Once I have made sure all equipment is clean with no chance of misfiring, I bundle it into a field bag, pack plenty of water and I’m off.

Sometimes it goes even further than that, and in addition to farm-to-fork, you can go the full farm-to-fork-to-fude pen…

This is the farm part. It’s the seashore some fifteen minutes from my home by bicycle. This time I drove because the weather was weird - a cloudless blue sky, but with a biting, freezing wind - and I chose to get there in a comfy warm car like the lazy so-and-so I am.

When I arrived, there was a steady line of pedestrians heading out to sea. I could see where they were heading - literally. There’s an island just off the coast here called Island Eddy, and twice a year you can walk out there along the strand, at an especially low spring tide. It’s fun, as you can see little jets of water squirting up out of the sand as you walk along. They are razor clams. You can also gather queen scallops - I guess they haven’t learned to fear humans - and you can dream of a life away from everyone. Then you spend your entire visit worrying that the incoming tide might make your dream come true.

The shore, before you leave the mainland, is home to beds of mussels, clams and oysters, farmed on a small scale. They are gathered daily by a local family, the Kellys, the late patriarch of whom, Micheal, started an oyster business back in the Forties, when he was just a lad. I guess the family added mussels and clams at some point.

The shore was deserted when I arrived, but for the line of island-bound pilgrims. I strolled to the water’s edge and took a few clips for a YouTube video I thought I would make (which I did). I filmed boxes of shellfish waiting to be collected and processed, and found one lone native oyster on the sand, which I put in my pocket for later. After about a minute a white fridge truck appeared and made its way to the water’s edge, followed by a tractor. The harvestmen (fishermen?). I scarpered - the oyster was burning a hole in my pocket - and headed a little further up the shore, where I stood behind the sea wall and sketched what I saw. Every now and then I held up my sketchbook to add progress shots to my movie, and the wind threatened to snatch the book from my hands and hurl it into the (very low) tide.

(Once, at the same spot, an entire box of expensive W&N paints was blown into the very full tide: for years afterwards, when I took my children there, I told them I expected to see the sea all coloured in. Just think what lovely results could be had if the paints were joined by a sketchbook.)

At home, I bundled a few of the shellfish I had bought from the Kellys onto a chopping board and fiddled a bit of seaweed into position around them. Then I sat in the sun and drew and filmed, while my fingers went a ghastly white, from the Raynaud’s disease of which I am a sufferer. I wish my sketching videos didn’t showcase my greenish-white fingers so often, but that’s life in Galway for you, for ten months of the year. It’s the wind.

Not for a second did I think I would draw the subsequent paella I made - I thought drawing the living creatures was where it would end - but I did draw it. I made plenty, in two big pots (a good idea, since I burned one of then slightly), and had plenty left over. Enough to make a pretty arrangement. Then I thought it would be nice to add a recipe to to the overall composition, to which I need to add some words.

I don’t normally burn my paella, but my dinner guests were my brother and his two delightful children, who live in France, and I hadn’t seen them for a couple of years at least. I was distracted.

We had a very lovely evening, and the little family left the next day after climbing Croagh Patrick, in biting, freezing wind and strong sunshine. They were nearly blown off the top and hurled down the mountainside. But they survived, and returned to stay with our parents on the east coast.

The oyster I had pocketed remained in the fridge. I was scared it would be bad for me, and I could see that it was open, but when I took it out of the fridge it slammed shut in indignation. It soon opened up again - hungry, I imagine - and I took that as my cue that it was in rude health. I held it and inspected it, which of course prompted it to close again. It was either eat it, or let it die and go to waste, so I opened it and ate it. I have eaten countless oysters, but never one that seemed so full of…personality. It tasted slightly more metallic than I like my oysters, and my dear husband explained that that was because it had not been purged in the Kellys’ depuration tank. He also explained that he had already made me aware of this, but in this he is mistaken. I survived, the oyster did not.

Years ago I read a book by Paul Theroux called Dark Star Safari: Overland From Cairo To Cape Town. It was a harrowing read. At one point the author is in Nairobi, in Kenya, when he witnesses a thief being chased down by a mob, who catch and kill him. The author picks up a parasite in the last days of his trip that he struggles to shake off, long after his return home. He says something along the lines of “you, the reader, can be an armchair traveller, reading the account of my journey in comfort” or words to that effect. I remember thinking how grateful to him I was that I could curl up in my armchair, comfortable and safe, allowing him to do the dirty work.

Dublin isn’t Cairo, nor Cape Town, nor Kenya. I sat on the streets of Dublin City for about twelve months, over nearly two years, and made an account of what I saw, in words, like Mr. Theroux, and in watercolour sketches done on the spot, unlike Mr. Theroux. I did it because I was full of ambition and drive, and I wanted to do it, despite feeling somewhat nervous about the scale of the project when I first discussed it with my publisher (from whom I moved on to another, who ultimately published the book).
