To be perceived is to be recognized. Between the canopies of these two lies intimacy. We hardly know where it lies.

But it exists.

We reach for it.

The Eyes That Refuse to Look Away

Attention. Is it necessary?

Recognizing the way your heart caves into your stomach, breath growing shallow.

Seeing is not the same as being seen.

Human attention and recognition matter since they signal that we are valued. They help build emotional security, the braiding of a safety net barely visible yet ever so present. A sense of validation arises the moment someone looks closely enough to see you, an escape from the moments where you sit in the dark, talking to the walls. It calms the nervous system. Can you feel the fragrance of feel-good chemicals circling within you the moment you confide in someone? It is almost as though the release of oxytocin and dopamine builds trust.

Is attention still necessary?

Sociologist Charles Horton Cooley explores how our self-image comes from the way we think others view us. Are you selfish or attention-seeking? It depends on perception, a looking glass that helps us study ourselves through the eyes of others. Is the image real? It hardly matters when you live within the walls of your mind, afraid to leave even on a whim.

We live in a constant state of fear, whether conscious of it or not.

Smile lines crinkling.

Frowns deepening.

They affect us every day.

There is a boundary between being physically observed and feeling emotionally understood. It is the difference between someone seeing your outward body and someone connecting with your inner thoughts and emotions, the experience of being pulled in the right direction. Observation exists in a sphere of passive experiences, something hardly born out of care. In contrast, understanding requires empathy—an active connection built from stones of concern, of love. It is a form of compassion that creates nonverbal syncing, a temporary bridge sustained by mirror neurons, special brain cells that help you and another match expressions and body language.

Judgment versus validation.

Distant or close.

Sight.

Or insight.

Which would you prefer? Be honest with yourself.

The Ache of Being Chosen

Self-worth.

Where does it lie?

It is present within the craving for more, a reward loop that makes you seek more validation, hoping it will build your sense of self-worth. Flying high always leads to a collapse so devastating it destroys.

Do we ache to be held in another’s gaze till we crash?

Recognition, attachment, and emotional intimacy form a progressive chain where being validated creates a refuge required for a secure bond, an intertwining made to grow along with emotional closeness. Recognition is the foundation of all connections—the acknowledgement of your aches, the sign of safety within the four walls of a person. The consistency of this forms a strong attachment, a secure bond that lowers defenses, reducing the fear of getting hurt. And thus, emotional intimacy is an immense collaboration of having a shelter and living beneath the awnings of trust.

The yearning for this kind of regard from specific people occurs because our brains associate approval with survival, belonging, and emotional value.

The small circle of a tribe huddled around the warmth of an ardent fire, surrounded by the fury of dusk.

Being valued by the people of your tribe meant everything.

Another night of serenity.

Protection.

And yet we still hide. Conceal the way our chests burn, tears ablaze on skin.

We mask until the veil is lifted off.

When someone notices the latent scrolls of our heart, our brains view it as a threat, an infiltration of the soul. Sweet brine tides that pull wrinkled seashells home. When we are exposed to our vulnerabilities in this way, our brains’ alarm system detects a danger through amygdala activation, ultimately creating a surge of adrenaline that leads to defense. “I’m fine, really”. Laughing it off. Running away from relief. This unveiling makes you hyper-aware, suddenly conscious of how they look into you. The way their eyes do not seem to turn away. Can you see the compassion glimmering within them, a barrel of light as brilliant as the stars that guide? Are you searching for a frown, a sign of rejection? Or are you simply losing control? Do you finally feel better?

Acceptance shifting the sand on your shores of desolation.

The thrill of being witnessed can activate your nervous system, quickening your heartbeat, making your stomach churn in the best possible way. Are those butterflies? The misattribution of arousal. It arises from the moment you feel understood, labeling sensations of love towards a person who may just be your friend. Desire can begin with the feeling that someone’s attention has become unusually precise.

The pierce of an arrow into your heart.

It feels so tender.

When Someone Learns the Shape of Your Silence

Hunger.

Longing for validation, for understanding.

What does it mean to desire being seen when so much of an individual’s identity has been shaped by hiding?

Concealed in the shadows. Growing familiar with isolation until it is kin.

“Passing” goes a step further than hiding behind the bushes of life. It is a disguise etched so deeply within an individual it becomes their reality, a disguise that allows you to fit into a more accepted or dominant part of society. A presentation so complete that it resembles the way chameleons blend into the colors of the world. Are they even conscious of the way they mimic the green around them? Historically, passing has allowed queer people to survive danger and discrimination while simultaneously creating a sense of isolation and invisibility. This is the result of hiding their true selves from society. Queer individuals have faced the violence of physical attacks, imprisonment, and even the pain of an inequitable death.

A cloak of shelter, closet for refuge.

It protects.

Yet it is a constant reminder of never being truly beheld.

Recognition from another person feels so overwhelmingly powerful after hiding a part of your identity because it breaks the anguish of solitude, the ultimate proof that true identities are acceptable. This embrace sheds any manifestation of self-doubt, demolishing tall walls constructed on the basis of the looking-glass self.

Ashes of shame perched on the inception of self-acceptance.

The desire to be whole again.

The winds sway without asking permission, moving through the clouds in whatever direction they choose. And even still, exposure is about maintaining control over the most intimate aspects of yourself. The fundamental difference between being exposed against your will and voluntarily sharing the private parts of the soul is consent and control. Choice is portrayed as a sign of empowerment, creating a sense of closeness that can only be achieved by the intimacy of understanding. This is beautiful, an action lined with the gemstones of compassion. Vulnerability uncovered against our will is a violation, an act of harassment leading to the loss of control.

Would you want to be seen after being unveiled involuntarily?

For all the world to see.

To dissect.

To manipulate.

What is it like to drop the mask, to feel the edges of it crinkle as it is being consumed by the ivy that calls it home?

This is answered by the film Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) directed by Céline Sciamma. It explores intimacy by turning the act of looking into an equal conversation between two people instead of a one-sided gaze. The art of painting is placed into a dialogue built on perspectives, a secret observation where the painter, Marianna must memorize Héloïse’s face since she refuses to pose for a wedding portrait. It is a process that burns, the wick of a candle soon disappearing into the ceiling of a smoke-shrouded room. The director uses long, quiet shots - tension streaming through the screen - where the characters hold their gaze for a long time without speaking or looking away. Such attention separates the distractions of the outside world from the fulfillment found within.

Art preserves their time together.

A reminder of being seen.

Eternal.

Films about queer desire use the act of looking to express hidden love, a longing made visible even when society deems it too sinful to be spoken aloud. “I love yous” are seldom when eyes speak the words instead, camera angles that capture stolen glances. A mirror connecting you with a character you never thought you could relate to.

Suspense hangs.

You hear the melody of a clock. It makes you anxious.

They have learnt your face.

Your cupid’s bow.

The hue of tears on your skin.

The Hunger for an Audience

Do you seek a gaze or “likes” on a post?

Comments that ask about your feelings in circling euphemisms.

Saving a reel that sees you.

These moments satisfy a human desire for connection and approval through quick bursts of dopamine, showered in unpredictable shards that reward low self-esteem. It is a distant echo to the value individuals felt in tribal groups, the hunger for belonging filtered through the evolutionary need to fit in. Social media makes this simpler, an illusion sustained by the need to keep up a performance. It is a version of external validation that is easily accessible, and yet it may stop people from truly constructing their inner self-worth.

Have you felt your fingers twitch when your post does not match the statistics of your average posts? Does your chest burn?

Digital praise makes us fragile.

We yearn for a stream of approval that may dry out.

Social media has transformed the relationship between being seen and constructing the shapes of one’s identity by shifting private reflection into public performance. Being recognized is not a result of living your life, it is a tool that proves your existence. Instant reactions give immediate feedback on a post, where likes and comments are a scorecard that reflects worth. This visual feedback loop is thus maintained by behavior changes, where individuals repeat poses, styles, or topics that get high engagement. How can you have control when you let an audience dictate your future choices?

You simply curate until it is all you can do.

Reaching for an ideal image.

A prolonged performance.

Nonetheless, publicly sharing vulnerability creates a pulse of intimacy between strangers. It is a response that is brought alive by the triggering of disclosure reciprocity, making people feel instantly safe and connected. We typically hide our flaws deep within the unfathomable parts of ourselves, and yet when a stranger shows weakness first, it lowers our defenses.

Life is nothing more than the entanglement between predator and prey.

We just need to search for our kindred spirits.

Social media blurs the boundary between authentic and performed vulnerability, making it harder to distinguish between flaws and strategic imperfections. It becomes difficult to tell if a post is a true cry for help or a calculated way to build trust while making creators feel like their real emotions are fabricated. Parasocial bonds shift the differentiation between the persona and the person, thus crafting a cycle that moves into the all-too-familiar lands of isolation and rejection.

Loneliness in a crowd. Hymnals and folded palms.

Institutional religion is often public, communal, and orthodox. Worship is directed toward the radiant thrones of supreme deities while the hope of salvation envelops the believer, breeding submission to divine will. On the other hand, magic is the attempt to manipulate the supernatural with an intention to achieve a specific result. Whether it is a want for rain or a need for healing, it exists in a place of coercion, an inverse to prayer’s plea. Alongside existing institutional religion were forms of folk magic and healing: local practitioners and charmers, the protection of talismans and amulets dangling off necks.

Though the Church condemned folk magic as heresy, ordinary religious practice and enchantment soon intertwined, like ivy circling the loose wounds of brick. In the medieval and early modern periods, the boundary between orthodoxy and superstition soon grew to be murky as people often judged practices by their results rather than whether they were “religious” or “magical”.

The intrinsic strength of a Latin litany. Wax trickling down consecrated candles.

The aroma of incense.

Saturating.

It was a thin line between religion and magic.

Petition and coercion.

Nonetheless, religious authorities sometimes tolerated certain supernatural practices while condemning others as witchcraft. Pious magic—supplications for healing and weather rituals—was accepted because they acknowledged the supreme power of God. It was a magic that operated within the church’s command. Unapproved rites. Incantations whispered in secret. Did they invoke hidden forces, forces that threatened to climb out of the blankets between reality and illusion. It hardly mattered. Condemnation fell upon those who threatened institutional dominance. Subversion challenged orthodox theology.

Empowerment jeopardized control.

The meaning of “witchcraft” shifted through time as did grains of soil. It moved from practical forms of healing and magic to a heresy associated with the malevolence of the devil during the early modern witch trials. Heretical or not, magic has existed alongside religion, a barely visible distinction separating the two like oil and water.

Petition and coercion.

Blurred together by the fated string of desperation.

Where Herbs Become Prayer

Have you felt the cords of your throat closing up? Nausea? Or perhaps the freeze of a fever, a burn so cold it kills. Do you shout to the heavens and sit in a dead man’s anticipation? Do you desire the restorative enchantment of remedies made by men?

The divine—or healing by the world?

Religious rituals and folk remedies were blended together due to a notion that physical illness was simply a spiritual imbalance. The touch of a holy relic against calloused skin. Drinking water infused with sanctification. The bitter mixture of herbs and other protective rituals formed an integrated system of holistic medieval and early modern medicine, where physical cures and spiritual faith operated in tandem to restore the tangible body and human soul. It was a complementary approach designed to combat sin and perhaps even demonic interference that seemed to cause bodily illness.

Physical symptoms were interpreted to identify cosmic causes.

A qualm caused by the vice of adultery.

A malady so consuming it must be the result of unfathomable transgressions.

There was often no contradiction seen between the recitations of prayer and the mixture of medicine. Monotheistic traditions such as medieval Christianity, Judaism, and Islam often absorbed local protective rites. It calls to mind the image of soil drinking up the gift of the sky’s tears. They would reframe local protective customs as appeals to divine protection rather than another form of competing sorcery.

The Hamsa symbol is an ancient protective charm that predates major monotheism, originating from the desert sands of old Middle Eastern and North African cultures as a barrier against evil spirits and the fright of bad luck. Regional Christian groups in the Middle East adopted the hand as the Hand of Mary, a representation of maternal protection and grace. Likewise, Islam adopted the symbol as the Hand of Fatima, named after the daughter of Prophet Muhammad with many connecting the five fingers to the foundation of the Five Pillars of Islam.

Religious integration of such a nature strengthened man’s holistic worldview, a shared understanding that the natural, supernatural, and the divine were not disconnected, just lines intertwined by a communal need for restoration.

For preservation.

The Women They Called Witches

Can you smell the smoke?

It faintly smells like the incense of an apothecary’s shop, the herbs crushed and stirred. The breath of incantations. It smells of innocence.

The flames resemble the blue of oceans as they prey on tender flesh.

Of women.

Healers.

Through domestic duties and expectations of caregiving, women were historically associated with the charms of herbal remedies. Exclusion from formal academic institutions also positioned women as practitioners of herbalism.

Possessing remedies of recuperation. Acquiring knowledge passed through generations.

And so wisdom was power in the palms of a woman.

Magic.

Witchcraft.

Religious and political institutions determined who was considered a healer or a witch by looking into their source of authority, gender, and social compliance, a complete analysis often tinted by a concealed bias. Legitimate healers trained at recognized universities and held formal licenses, a distinction that isolated women and shielded men. Ecclesiastical approval guaranteed authority as a practitioner while the mere whisper of secret incantations without Church or state sanction was an invitation for suspicion. A large majority of those accused of communicating with the devil were marginalized women, often old, poor, or reclusive. Any form of deviance - failure to conform to traditional gender roles or perhaps challenging clerical monopolies - easily transformed women into malevolent witches.

Restoration soon shifted into the shadows of maleficium - harmful magic.

Inquisitors and secular magistrates transformed the destiny of folk magic by redefining it as implicit or explicit devil worship. Boiling cauldrons of botanicals. Candelabras inked with wax.

Charms. Black magic.

Distant from the truth.

Some forms of supernatural or spiritual practices remained within the structures supported by religious authorities. Yet the same forms were condemned when performed outside institutional authority, highlighting the Church’s claimed monopoly on mediating between humanity and the divine. Inside the marble walls of an institution, power came from God through proper ordination and ritual, while outside those walls, the same acts could be recast as diablerie.

Accusations soon became the art of control over women’s knowledge.

The desire to capture any anomaly.

Women made up roughly 75% to 80% of those executed for witchcraft in early modern Europe and the American colonies. These accusations of witchcraft supported the societal view that women were more prone to temptation and subversive behaviors through biblical narratives. The mistake of one woman - Eve’s eye on the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil - became a worthy reason for suspicion.

Innocent or at fault, women were fated to a label of vulnerability, where allegations ranged from a desire for defiance or transgression.

The boundary between sorcery and faith was hardly about what people believed in. It is about who was permitted to practice it.

Power dynamics lace every story.

A poison that seeps into roots.

Roots that bleed in despair

The Candle Still Burns

Persistence.

It exists in the way flowers climb through the death of dry sand, in the way your eyes crinkle to smile though tears glitter on your skin.

Rituals still persevere even through non-belief.

People continue to perform them even without supernatural belief, evidence for a lingering need for control. Creating a link between predictability and the need to reduce anxiety. When shared, these traditions build trust and loyalty in a way that scatters blood from water. The simple act of lighting a candle or reciting a bible verse after the death of a loved one is a ritual that performs cognitive reframing - a shift from distress to acceptance. It is a way of possessing agency through the obstacles of life.

Whether a lucky amulet or manifestations through a subliminal, these practices grant a sense of comfort and meaning within the unpredictability of today’s world.

Visiting places of worship before a job interview.

A crystal glimmering in the pockets of a student taking an exam.

Ritual is hardly about dancing under the canvas of twilight around a fire, screaming the devil’s name. It is the notion of doing things to feel better, an action that restores agency when we feel powerless against fate.

When desperation crawls in the throngs of our hearts, prayer becomes custom. While women were executed by powerful men and commoners searched for apothecaries that carried cures for disease, the need for dominance against destiny shone through.

Through the torments of life, people do not ask whether an act is sacred or forbidden.

They ask whether it might help.

Help to comfort.

To grant meaning

Who Names the Sacred

Plagued with the hopelessness of death’s doorway, you kneel on cement now burned with the scars of your knees. Answers to the hostilities that swept over kingdoms. Victory or the loss of countless soldiers, blood even still seeping into the weeds of a valley. Queries move like incense even through the crevices of the ordinary - love, illness, fate.

Does she love me?

Does she love me not?

Is my path forged forward? Must I leave my home behind to fulfill a dead man’s quest?

People enter the columns of a temple carved from stone not because they possess knowledge of what lies ahead. Before the gadgetry of telescopes, satellites, and algorithms, humans have soared through the hills, interpreted visions of prophecy and madness, and searched for the voices of oracles. They just needed to believe the future could speak to them, a sound of articulated assurance. And yet, why do we prevail with the belief that futurity is an instrument of response?

Between Earth and Sky

Before whispers from the divine became instruments of authority, it existed as a conversation between humanity and the uncharted. Abrahamic religions portray prophecy as a direct mandate from God - a warning of consequences, a mirror that stares back at moral behavior. The earliest documented examples of foretelling and divination date back to the extispicy (liver divination) and omens from the gods in the sprawling deserts of Mesopotamia, while the Shang Dynasty in ancient China used the cracks of pyromancy to develop interpretations about the soon to fail rains or the victory of war.

A common theme emerges when you align the brushstrokes of the ancient civilizations: the way omens twist the shadows to vanquish the fear of the ineffable, the way the constellations align like the makings of a guide.

Cultures are separated by the salt of the seas and the canopies of the forests, yet many developed systems of divination that resembles a universal human phenomenon. Prophecy arises from universal human cognitive traits combined with deep social needs. An instance of this is the evolution of hyperactive agency detection. Man evolved a cognitive bias to attribute intentionality and the unseen forces of hidden intention to random or natural events - the gloom of a solar eclipse or the malady of a famine - making it almost natural to believe that spirits and even gods may speak through the souls of certain individuals. The stars had always been silent. We merely taught them how to speak.

However, it begs the question: what human need were prophecies answering?

A Sky We Could Hold

Control.

It is interlaced with the hems of prophecy, akin to the venom concealed beneath the petals of an ethereal flower.

People turn toward divination during chaos and moments of crisis to regain a sense of agency that has surrendered to uncertainty. This is a coping mechanism that was formulated through the narrative frameworks of prophecies, granting meaning to random catastrophes. It positions suffering as a larger aspect of a cosmic plan, something beyond human comprehension.

Shared rituals.

Hands in prayer.

Consulting the divine presence of oracles, together.

It was a form of collective reassurance that bound communities seamlessly across the passage of the unfamiliar.

Prophets served as spiritual guides whose pronouncements shaped the trajectory of entire kingdoms, changed the way destiny was woven into history. Through the currents of political, military, and social decisions, the language of foretelling legitimized rule and maintained power as seen through the scopes of the Qin and Han dynasties. Rulers routinely manipulated the fated strings of omens, cosmological signs, and written prophecies to prove they held the Mandate of Heaven - the divine approval to govern.

Prophecy controls the narrative.

We will always be deceived if it means that another will possess the power to break down the heavens, till we are nothing but dust. And yet, sacred interpretation offers something gentler.

Comfort.

The solace of predictability within the face of war, within the face of loss. A warmth resembling morning dew on dry, dead soil. Divination creates a sense of order, managing the flow of preparation and action. Knowing the shape of destiny leads to prayer, repentance, and bracing for impact, a preparation designed through the uncovering of fate.

Ritual becomes survival from fear itself.

The fear of death.

The fear of change.

The appeal of foretelling is much less about feeling prepared for tomorrow, it is a psychological need for stability. It manifests an illusion of agency, a belief that tricks the human brain into thinking the outcome can be changed, fate itself can be circumvented. The loss of the element of surprise is a conscious choice rooted in a want for a less chaotic future, a future blanketed in serenity. It is a need for consolation shaped by wanting something better than the catastrophe of illness, the fatality of strife - a balm against the ambiguity of the unfamiliar hereafter.

Nonetheless, this solace is still a wolf in sheep’s clothing, authority masked beneath the wraps of comfort’s wool.

Seeking domination.

Hunting power.

Everything Became a Sign

Have you ever found yourself searching, seeking not for a hand upon the wheel, but for meaning. Rummaging in the murk for a purpose worth everything in the face of uncertainty.

Searching.

Is it all we know?

Humans forages for patterns and meaning because human brains are wired for survival through the smears and daubs of evolution. The cognitive need for order is deeply interlinked with hyperactive agency detection and detecting predators within the rustling bushes and the blow of shriveled leaves. Evolutionary survival has also carved a pathway for psychological biases like Apophenia: the tendency to perceive meaningful connections between unrelated things. It is a constellation, stars connecting fragments that were never predestined to meet.

Many ancient and traditional cultures interpreted dreams, natural events, animals, and symbols as direct messages from ancestors and the divine. Sleep was viewed as a state where the soul left the earthly body, allowing the whispers of deities to transmit warning and prophecies for those in need. In a similar fashion, animals were the physical manifestation of spiritual power, with behavioral shifts possessing the energy of specific omens.

We keep searching for patterns, indirect messages from the celestial. It raises the question: why were divine messages often believed to appear through signs rather than through the certainty of direct answers?

Free will reigns over reverberations of mystery.

Indirect signs require the meticulous efforts of interpretation, allowing individuals to exercise choice rather than blindly obey. It is a system of agency that will never breed mere puppets.

A test of faith.

A test of wisdom.

Oracles, such as the Oracle at Delphi spread the word of destiny as unchangeable script, ink that never bleeds through the filters of paper, tides that turn perpetually. Myths like Oedipus Rex explore the inescapable nature of prophecy though it offers purpose.

Destiny: an immortal cage.

It is a display of how Greek divination and sacred interpretation shaped our understanding of fate, with Greek tragedy propagating moral accountability and coping mechanisms. Much of this stems from the conviction that the universe is constantly communicating with us. We search for patterns in the sand, meanings that imagine an illusion of control amidst the chaos. Divine messages transformed the fear of what lies beyond understanding into something significant, something worth believing.

It is not only about prediction.

Dialogues drift through the air and we yearn to read those patterns.

Different Gods, Same Prayers

Does the future end?

Or does it simply transform within the same fragments of its foundation?

Modernity wears the same visage as history. Predictive analytics and forecasting serve similar psychological purposes to ancient prophecy, a language that attempts to tame instability and guides decision making. The futurism laced within tech visionary projections function in the same way, shaping societal behavior much like the breath of classical oracles. Algorithmic recommendations perpetuated by artificial intelligence models also echo the disembodied psychological relationship humans once had with divination.

Divine interpretation.

Statistical probability.

Even through the shifts of ocean currents, history does not move in cycles.

It reflects.

We are drawn to enchantment of astrology, tarot, and predictions because they provide agency and comfort, a confirmation bias that expresses a deep seated desire for self-reflection. Aside from the psychological, they provide a sense of belonging through shared belief systems like obsessing over the stars of compatibility charts. They create a charm of instant social connections, a portrait within one’s identity that shifts with time, a buoy on shimmering pools. Artificial intelligence also resembles older forms of divination through consistent attempts to reduce doubt while imposing order within mayhem. Man’s evolutionary trait of pattern recognition has now been translated into the risk management strategies, sustained by the cold logic of machine learning models.

It seems as though we cannot let go of the promise of certainty. Having a definitive answer to what lies ahead - whether perfect, flawed, or false - requires far less mental energy than tolerating doubt. Thus, the survival of varying forms of the languages of prophecy reveal how man prefers the psychological comfort of a defined destiny over the paralyzing anxiety of the unknown. The tragedy of fate could not matter less if it meant solace in preparation.

Horoscopes. Personality tests. AI prediction.

Prophecy never ended, and desire never changed.

Life itself may become another reflection of the unseen. And yet desire prevails through all, the North star above the expanse of darkness.

The Unknown Still Whispers

Questions.

We never cease the pursuit for answers. Anticipation lingers in our bones, rejecting traces of any lingering uncertainty.

Is prophecy honest? Is that a question that matters?

Omens were never only about knowing the future, in preparation. Perhaps it was about believing that the universe was listening and willing to answer no matter the time or perils.

Does she love me?

Does she love me not?

The veiled dangles in our faces, the hypnotic strokes of a pocket watch. Our relationship with it has fundamentally changed as we shift our stance from passive endurance to active control of our own narratives through divination. The sky still holds constellations worth reading, perhaps laying an eye on the destiny we hold. Incense flows through the crevices of our mind, questions flowing through the river of discovery. The boundary of what we do not know remains infinite.

Why not turn it into a tale of celestial quality?

Meaningful.

And abundant in purpose

Thanks for reading Rowena's Substack! Yearning. Wearing the face of an anguish we recognize all too well. Pages filled with the ink of tragedy. Photo albums of abandoned buildings, a background of gray feathered skies. Even so, when there is sunshine, we long for rain. Though the rivers glisten, we seek rushing currents that collapse against stone.

Along the outskirts of life and through the pacing of history, sadness stopped being something we merely endured. It became something we actively sought.

Searching.

For there is beauty in suffering. Enchantment in the way droplets slip from the hems of clouds, in the way tears cascade. Shimmering.

We wear the stains of melancholy like lace linings: an aesthetic, an identity. This was not the case for much of history, where it was understood as an illness.

A burden.

It was once considered a temporary state. Yet it mutated, becoming a part of who we are.

The Anatomy of Sorrow

Sadness is a natural, fleeting reaction to a specific trigger, similar in some ways to realms of grief - the waves of mourning. Unlike this gloom, melancholy is a state of deep and thoughtful despondency without a tangible loss.

This state traces back to the Ancient Greek word melankholia, which translates to “black bile”. The pillars of medieval and ancient medicine were governed by four bodily fluids. This humoral theory, developed by the school of Hippocrates, explored how human health depended on the perfect balance of four bodily fluids: blood, yellow bile, phlegm, and black bile. It was thought that feelings of despondency and depression were caused by the overwhelming presence of black bile in the human body, a disease that upset the balance of optimism and the brooding temperament, imitating the frigid gales of a bleak winter.

A portrait of malady soon transmuted into the brush strokes of artistic vision and emotion, a reinterpretation of Aristotle’s notions of the link between suffering and genius. A bridge that fueled even traces of creativity. By the Romantic Era, melancholy was elevated to an aesthetic ideal, a romanticized condition of soul that allows artists to completely express themselves, through the lens of profound sensitivity and appreciation for the fragility of mortality. Unlike the pervasive nature of modern depression, this emotion inspires.

It is beautiful.

It is something worth wearing.

The changing landscape of meaning reflects the evolution of how society comprehends the human mind. The fundamental framework of understanding human behavior shifted from the scopes of biology to theology, then to the aesthetics of philosophy, and ultimately science., the meaning shifting from medical illness, to religious judgement, to nineteenth-century introspection. Fear was instilled within the meaning of melancholy, while Romanticism rebranded sorrow as an invitation for individualism and introspection. Hence, development evokes the movement of despondency as a passing mood to the foundation of an identity society actively embraces. Bricks built of tears that society adores.

When did tears become so beautiful that sorrow soon shifted the culture of identity itself?

Where Flowers Learned to Mourn

Shifting currents.

Romantic writers rejected the rationality of the Enlightenment era, valuing the individuality that prevailed through the trajectories of intense sorrow. Longing was soon connected with the concept of the Sublime - awe, terror, and vastness inspired by wild nature - designing landscapes of sadness into visions of grandeur. Stormy seas and towering mountains were no longer bound by depression. They were free to inspire the imagination. Despair has an uncanny ability to confront humans with their own limits and mortality, further evoking the Sublime, which fed the artistic vision of the Romantics. The writers and artists of the period associated the disposition of melancholy with creativity because they believed sorrow opened the mind to profound, infinite emotional depth, plunging so deep that it was unreachable through ordinary human happiness.

Artists were drawn to suffering during periods of historical trauma as a reaction against rapid urbanization, social alienation, and Enlightenment rationalism. An instance of this is industrialization, the move from rural life to crowded, unsanitary conditions of industrial life. This created vortexes of disconnection from nature and communities, deepened by the disillusionment of political and social upheaval.

Gothic literature and the Byronic hero romanticized melancholy by transforming psychological torment into symbols of rebellion, and sensitivity, reflected through the mood of decaying castles and wild landscapes. A reflection of the troubled mind. The Byronic hero was popularized by Lord Byron in works such as Childe Harold’ Pilgrimage. This archetype was composed of a brooding outcast, brilliant and cynical, and haunted by the torment of a secret past. Ultimately, the Byronic hero made emotional pain look desirable, glamorizing suffering so that inner agony made them sympathetic and romantic figures to readers.

Thus, melancholy became coveted.

Longing.

Loss.

Solitude.

Romantic art suggests that beauty and sadness are intertwined through the idea of life’s transience. Flowers, youth, and sunsets are also temporary, fleeting amidst the relentless passage of time itself. Perhaps art displays gloom through the evanescence of beauty, so precious because it is not perpetual. Hence, melancholy became beautiful through art and literature, inspiring creativity and depth. However, the question arises: why is this emotion associated with authenticity?

We Cannot Let Go

Originating from the belief of Plato and Aristotle’s concepts of “divine madness”, the “tortured artist” was heavily romanticized during the Romantic era, forming a bridge between a temperament of suffering and artistic genius. This link survived through the heights of emotional sensitivity, fueling creative insight overlapped with traits required for out-of-the-box thinking. Art is catharsis, a coping mechanism that translates pain and trauma into a physical medium which helps artists process their inner turmoil. This powers an ingenuity so profound that society vividly remembers the art of the “tortured artist”, reinforcing the concept that pain is a requirement for true greatness.

Literature supports this by portraying grief and suffering as the pathways to truth. Characters like Shakespeare’s King Lear only achieve insight after they are plunged into the depths of extreme sorrow.

Joy is blinding. Yet, grief is the light that opens eyes.

Grief is truth.

And the truth is beautiful.

Thus, stories of hardship and misery are often more likely to be remembered than stories of happiness.

The negativity bias is a psychological mechanism built through evolutionary survival, our brains evolving to prioritize threats, danger, and negativity over the joy of positive experiences because pain has kept us alive through the perils of danger.

Survival.

Do not eat the poison of a tempting berry.

Do not move when the gleaming eyes of a predator tracks your movement.

The human brain has always processed negative information more thoroughly, storing it deeper in the trenches of longstanding misery. Happiness is the baseline state of being. A normal. Forgettable. Suffering disrupts it all. It demands more and more: an explanation, a resolution. The brain preserves wounds because wounds once protected us.

Melancholy is negative, yet it is authentic. Turmoil is beautiful and worthy of remembrance amidst the routine of bliss. The moment we began associating sadness with authenticity and creativity, Despondency became more meaningful.

It became something worth performing.

Dressed in Dusty Blue

Pain aestheticized.

Modern culture has transformed melancholy from something behind closed doors into something public, a digital identity carefully arranged through screens. Sharing sadness online has become a performance of vulnerability, a social currency that signals emotional honesty, self-awareness, and depth. This publicizing of these conditions creates digital solidarity within the breaths of a fast-paced digital sphere. Like the brush strokes of the Romantics and the temperaments of the Byronic hero, movements like Dark Academia, and “Sad Girl” aesthetics embrace this state because of its offerings: veracity and community. These movements are a rejection of toxic positivity, where subcultures push back against the pressure to always be happy and substituting it with the idealization of inner life. They are an aesthetic escape, where negative emotions are portrayed in tangible, comforting forms.

Music, fashion, and social media create digital chambers of “sad hours”, turning personal anguish into palatable patterns spinning in the backdrop of life, Lizzy McAlpine with the insulation of faded hoodies and smudged makeup. It is a look of exhaustion. Seeking solace.

We find comfort and community in shared melancholy, a stranger for a partner in a shared battle against the world. There is no isolation when we collectively bask in the sweetness of sadness together, holding hands through a screen.

Consolation.

Succor.

The popularity of “Sad Girl” aesthetics reveals parallels between contemporary society and the Romantic era. Sincerity amidst the burnout and exhaustion of a spiraling. Pain is aestheticized in a failed attempt to have control over feelings of uncertainty. A coping mechanism that inspires, longstanding throughout the transitioning waves of life.

The Weather Within Us

Black bile shifted into the magic of celebrated artistic depth.

It exists as a bridge between universal suffering and our enduring search for the meaning of life itself, a quest that resonates through the landscape of centuries. Perhaps melancholy has always been more than an emotion. It is a way humans make sense of longing, beauty, and the parts of life that refuse easy, ordinary bliss. Shared vulnerability circulates within the crevices of the romanticization of pain itself.

Do we truly join hands through digital screens?

Is the solidarity forged by human hands? Is the torment any more real?

Or perhaps, we have learned to wear dejection on our sleeves like it is a pillar within our hearts, a sign of authenticity.

The tunes of a piano, eclipsing over the sorrowful melody of a violin.

Yearning.

We seek to drown in the beauty of melancholy.

Plummeting into the depths like a fall from the stars.

Do we wish to be found again?

Thanks for reading Rowena's Substack! style="text-align: justify;">There is something strangely enchanting about things that have begun to disappear. Ivy yawning through the cracks of a desolate castle wall. Chipping paint. A faint echo subtle enough to cause shivers that ride up and down the length of your fragile spine.

Imagine, entering the threshold of the unknown. A crumbling castle hidden beneath the depths of seemingly endless fog. Ancient statues, some staring at you, most faceless.

Ruined.

Haunting.

We often perceive the old as ethereal, appreciating their allure after their lives were fulfilled. True beauty lies within the boundaries of disappearance, rather than the security of preservation. Perhaps we are drawn to ruins because they lie in between memory and myth, distance transforming reality into mythology. Something unknown. Incomprehensible.

When Ruins Became Romantic

We were never the first to seek romance within ruins; whether buildings or lifestyles. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the Middle Ages, ruins were a sign of divine retribution. Yet this soon shifted into a perspective where humanist scholars and artists sought out ruins for inspiration. Eventually, these meanings metamorphosed into concepts of the picturesque and sublime, which were synonymous with Romanticism. Ruins were symbolic of the power of nature over fragility, highlighting the diminishing of human achievement against the passage of time. Ruins marked a critique against human pride, while evoking nostalgia and melancholy for fallen empires and perished eras. The romance of ruins soon manifested into the multi -year gap year excursion - The Grand Tour - embarked upon by wealthy Europeans. The Tour’s trajectory took the elite through chains of education, where they studied classical Roman ruins and Renaissance art. The ultimate fading of the Grand Tour is inked by the rise of mass tourism, a pathway leading to the continued obsession of ruins.

People have always been fascinated by ruins. Yet, this captivation grew untamed through the reins of the Romantic movement. Ruins have always been valued through their multifaceted symbolic meanings - beauty, history, mystery, imagination. Thus, our attraction to ruins cannot be positioned as unusual. It is indeed a unique part of a longstanding cultural tradition.

It marks a direct comparison between memory and experience, which begs the question: why does the past seem better than it actually was?

The Past We Never Truly Remember

Have you ever remembered the shiny aspects of an experience over the grossly mundane or stressful details? Rosy retrospection makes individuals look at events and eras more positively than they were actually experienced, reconstructing memory into romanticized versions of the past. The Vacation and Trip Studies in 1997 by Terrence Mitchell and Leigh Thompson explore this by collecting data related to the trip, whether it was expectations or even memories after the trip. Though a vacation could be encapsulated with disastrous weather, travel stress, and disillusionment, people often rated vacations more positively after it was over than they did while actually experiencing it. Rosy retrospection is ultimately a mechanism within which nostalgia functions, where we not only long for the past - we long for a version of the past our minds have partially manufactured. Longing for something better than the reality we are enclosed by.

When recalling an event, our brains glue together broken remnants of the same idea to rebuild a memory. It is a process that reels in vulnerability, leaving our recollections susceptible to the world that encases us. This glue is rather imperfect, failing to perfectly story every detail of our lives, influencing us to fill gaps using learned guesses, new information, and suggestions from other people. Memory is far from a flawless recording of our blemished lives. It is reconstructive, making it far simpler for nostalgia to take hold of our minds.

Nostalgia thrives as a psychological coping mechanism through the tribulations of uncertainty, where identity is re-established through periods of chaos, a constant reminder of personal continuity. Nostalgia is a reminder that we have survived before. A hope that we will continue to thrive. Anemoia refers to the concept of feelings nostalgic for times we have never experienced through an emotional pull that emulates the feeling of factual memories. Often capitalizing off of cultural consumption and collective memory, nostalgia helps us immerse ourselves into romanticized visions of the past, a past purely designed by our imagination. Nostalgia for the ruins of Ancient Rome and medieval castles stem from the idea that the past is distant yet beautiful. This distance strips away the uncertainty of the present, creating a mirage worthy of longing. Supported by the reconstructive quality of human memory, nostalgia thrives through the development of rosy retrospection, allowing us to feel wistful. It explains the longing that soaks our souls when we digest the chipping paint and growing weeds among collapsing ruins.

Glamorizing the past begins with the stripping away of inconvenience, uncertainty, and pain. Everything that marks human existence, erased by the enchantment of time through memory.

The Beauty of Things That Disappear

Ruins are not marked by tangible connections to glorious times. Rather, they are blemished with physical signs of decay that we deem ethereal. Romanticism favored the imperfection of asymmetry, roughness, and disorder of ruins, exemplified through the Picturesque movement. A flawless synergy of nature and human history. Similarly, the Romantic Sublime involves the sense of overwhelming and terrifying power, pronounced by the power of nature over human architecture. While beauty soothes and pleases, the Sublime terrifies the viewer through an overwhelming sense of awe that separates ordinary radiance from the Sublime. Decay was stunning, an ultimate triumph of untamed wilderness and the passage of time. It was symbolic of human mortality against the perpetuity of the natural world.

Cracked archways. Roots snaking through stone.

Abandoned perfection.

Romantic artists and writers adored ruins, seen as a juxtaposition to rapid industrialization and the hyper-logical mindset of the Enlightenment era. It was different. It was chaos, evoking ambiguity and stimulating vision. Inherently, humans are drawn to interpretive spaces manufactured by ambiguity, where mystery fosters creativity. Romanticism profited off this through negative capability, the ability to accept uncertainty. It was a cornerstone for intrigue. A mental tension. The incomplete quality of ruins explored an unfinished state, a bridge to imagination. By lacking structure, ruins invite creation through observation, where ingenuity fills the missing pieces of crumbling history.

Hence, ruins are the Sublime, so awe inspiring it becomes terrifying. Romanticism paints a picture of beauty found within a decay that is laced with negative capability, ambiguity, and imagination. Romantic artists like Caspar David Friedrich painted ruins to highlight human mortality and the inevitability of time, a constant reminder that life ends with death. Ruins are transcendent through fragmentation. Imperfect harmony exists within dilapidation, within destruction.

Escaping Into the Unknown

An escapist sanctuary.

Fallen dust sketching patterns on concealed crevices.

Authored and anonymous books towering amidst the noise of silence.

What does our obsession with ruins reveal about us today?

Like the artists, like the exploited a part of the Industrial Revolution who yearned for comfort - these spaces emit a sense of wonder we crave. Something hard to find in the caverns of today’s fast-paced, digital world. We idealize the wonder of historical periods and the perfection of future utopias. Yet we strip them of their hardships, a sanitized version of a world simplified by longing and supported by our reconstructive memories. Old things are anchors, sinking into the comfort of the past. They are appealing because a single vintage watch can transform into a narrative device making us a part of something larger than ourselves. For instance, the Dark Academia aesthetics thrives on a curated sense of nostalgia for the past. A tattered leather bound journal. Ink sinking into typewriters. Wax dripping off the edge of a candelabra. Modern culture has manufactured aesthetics that fulfill our yearning for escapism, offering safe, immersive environments, ultimately making the past feel richer than the fruit of the present.

The mystery of the unknown - ambiguity - serves as an antidote, fighting against the nuances of an over-documented world. The past is full of uncertainty. Questions about whether the history bound in our textbooks are accurate. The human brain fills in the blank pages of history with enthralling anecdotes, exploring the complexities of human nature with the aid of imagination’s cosmic powers. We crave escape, an escape built within our minds by the cognitive processes that alter memory itself.

The romanticization of ruins and vintage fashion and objects stem from the same psychological desire.

Escape.

A gateway from the relentless modern life into a tangible historical narrative.

Watching the spinning circles of a previously owned watch allows us to immerse ourselves into past eras, evoking the connection the Romantics felt to historical ruins. The picturesque brewing a cup of nostalgia in deep crevices of their hearts. We are drawn to the decay of the past because it leaves room for imagination on the backdrop of uncertainty, a juxtaposition to the unfinished story of the present.

The Ruins Within Us

Ivy yawning through the cracks of a desolate castle wall. We are not so different from the Romantics before us. We continue to choose idealization over certainty. Imagination against uncertainty. The romance of ruins is the choice to flee into the beauty of the former, ambiguity tingling our lens of judgment.

Draw towards the threshold of memory and myth.

Where certainty ends, longing begins.

Thanks for reading Rowena's Substack!
