Years can pass without our thinking about them, and then, for reasons we can’t explain, one of those images drifts back into our memory as vividly as the day we first saw it. We don’t summon it. It simply returns, as though it has been patiently waiting for the right moment to remind us that it still exists.

I’ve often wondered why that happens.

Some photographs are undeniably extraordinary. The light is perfect, the composition flawless, the subject compelling. We admire the photographer’s skill, perhaps even envy it a little, and then we continue on our way.

But there are other photographs that refuse to let go.

Their power doesn’t announce itself immediately. Instead, it unfolds slowly, revealing another layer each time we return. They become like companions we revisit throughout our lives. Somehow, they continue to grow, even though the photograph itself has never changed.

Perhaps that is because we have.

Every one of us arrives at a photograph carrying a lifetime of experiences. We bring our joys and disappointments, the people we’ve loved, the places we’ve wandered, the music we’ve listened to on lonely evenings, the books that quietly changed us, the memories we cherish and the ones we wish we could forget. We never see a photograph through someone else’s eyes. We see it through the unique life we have lived.

Then life continues.

We lose people we once thought we’d never lose. We discover places we never expected to see. We experience triumphs that reshape us and disappointments that soften us. The person who returns to a photograph ten years later is not the same person who first stood before it.

The photograph hasn’t changed. We have.

And because we have changed, the photograph has something new to say.

I think that is why the images we remember forever rarely reveal themselves all at once. They always leave room for us. They invite us into a conversation rather than delivering a conclusion. They trust us to bring our own lives into the experience, and in return they seem to grow richer each time we meet them again.

The older I become, the more I treasure those photographs.

Not necessarily the famous ones or the technically brilliant ones.

Instead, it’s the ones that stay.

The ones that unexpectedly return while I’m driving down a familiar road or sitting quietly with a cup of coffee. The ones that continue asking questions I still can’t completely answer. The ones that seem to understand me a little differently each time we meet.

Perhaps that is the highest achievement any photograph can hope for.

Not that it captures our attention for a few fleeting moments.

But that it becomes part of the landscape of our lives, returning again and again, quietly reminding us not only of what we once saw...

...but of who we have become since then.

Water moves against rock. Boats rise and fall in the harbor. Grasses bend in the wind. Waves dissolve into foam, reflections break apart and reform, and the rugged coastline provides the strong shapes and textures that can anchor an image even as everything else begins to move.

It is the kind of place where ICM and multiple exposure can take us well beyond simply recording what is in front of us.

With intentional camera movement, the camera itself becomes part of the creative process. A small movement can soften reality; a larger one can reduce a scene to line, color and gesture. The goal isn’t simply blur. It is learning how movement changes the visual language of a photograph and eventually being able to make those choices intentionally.

Multiple exposure asks us to think differently. Instead of finding everything we need in a single frame, we begin looking for relationships: how one exposure might strengthen another, how shapes, textures and colors can interact, and how the familiar can become something more expressive.

And you don’t need a camera with in-camera multiple exposure to explore those possibilities. Some photographers create their multiple exposures entirely in camera, while others photograph the individual elements and bring them together later. We’ll work with both approaches, including the fundamentals of creating double and multiple exposures through compositing.

These are the things I love to teach.

This fall I’ll be teaching them during five classes in Maine. But we won’t be spending all of our time inside talking about photographs. We’ll also be going out together to photograph along the seashore, around boats and harbors, on beaches and along that wonderful rugged Maine coastline.

Because there is an enormous difference between understanding a technique and standing in front of a scene asking yourself:

What can I do with this?

That’s where the real learning begins.

We’ll work with ICM in the field, experiment with multiple exposure, explore creative possibilities in post-processing and, most importantly, spend five days looking at the world with the question that sits at the heart of creative photography: What else is here?

I actually hadn’t planned to tell you about this workshop.

It sold out months ago.

One of them began in a beach parking lot.

I had only recently moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and decided to join a local photography Meetup. I knew very few people, and it seemed like a pleasant way to spend an afternoon and perhaps make a few new friends.

People were introducing themselves as they arrived.

When it was my turn, I smiled and said, “I’m Roxanne.”

The person standing in front of me looked thoughtful for a moment.

“Roxanne...”

“Yes.”

“From Google+?”

I nodded.

His face broke into a grin.

“Oh my God...everybody! Roxanne’s here!”

And then something wonderful happened.

One person after another came over to introduce themselves.

“I’m Bob.”

“I’m Lynn.”

“I’m...”

With every introduction came another moment of recognition, another smile, another laugh, another handshake or hug that felt familiar.

Within minutes, about half a dozen of us were standing together, laughing like old friends who had unexpectedly found one another.

It was impossible not to smile.

I had gone there hoping to meet photographers.

Instead, I found friends I already had.

That afternoon has stayed with me ever since because I have never stopped wondering how it happened.

For the previous year we had known one another entirely through photography on the social network, Google+. We shared photographs, talked about photographs, encouraged one another’s photographs, celebrated photographs that made us stop and look a little longer. That was the conversation we shared.

Nothing more.

And yet it had somehow become enough.

Years later I heard Sebastião Salgado say that every photograph reveals the photographer. I remember thinking what a beautiful idea it was. And I realized I knew it was true. That day on the beach was proof.

Every one of us arrives in this world by a different road.

No two lives unfold in quite the same way.

We love different people. We lose different people. We travel to different places. We stand before different paintings, read different books, listen to different music, breathe different air, taste different foods, and carry away different memories. We are shaped by quiet triumphs and private disappointments, by moments that become stories and stories that become part of who we are.

Slowly, almost without noticing, a lifetime becomes a person.

And that person is the one who eventually picks up a camera.

Or a paintbrush.

Or a violin.

Or a pen.

Whatever we choose to create with, we never arrive empty-handed. We bring every experience we have ever lived into the work, not consciously, not deliberately, but as naturally as we carry our own shadow. It becomes impossible to separate the artist from the art because the art has grown from the artist’s life.

Perhaps that is why those friendships formed so quickly.

Looking back, I don’t think we were simply admiring one another’s photographs.

We were getting to know the people who had made them.

Not all at once.

Not through any single image.

But slowly, quietly, photograph by photograph, until one day we recognized something that had been there all along.

The work had revealed the heart behind it.

Today, many of those people are still among my closest friends. They are scattered across the United States and around the world. Time and distance have changed remarkably little.

Whenever we meet, there is still that same quiet feeling that we are simply picking up a conversation that has never really ended.

I used to think photographs showed us the world.

Now I know they show us something even more remarkable.

Every time we create, we quietly introduce ourselves.

And every once in a while, if we’re paying attention, we have the extraordinary privilege of meeting a stranger...

...whose soul has already become familiar.

Every waking moment, millions of pieces of information compete for our attention. Light changes by the second. Colors shift as clouds pass overhead. Tiny movements ripple through leaves, reflections tremble in windows, shadows lengthen almost imperceptibly across the ground. Every surface contains patterns, textures and relationships that could occupy our attention for hours.

If we actually noticed all of it, we would never accomplish anything.

So, the brain makes a bargain on our behalf.

It quietly asks one question over and over again.

Does this matter?

If the answer is yes, it moves the information to the front of our awareness. If the answer is no, it disappears before we ever realize it was there.

It’s a brilliant system.

It keeps us alive.

It gets us safely through traffic, reminds us where we left the car, recognizes the face of a friend across a crowded room and allows us to navigate a world that would otherwise be impossibly overwhelming.

But every gift has its price.

The same brain that protects us from information overload also hides an astonishing amount of beauty.

Not because beauty is unimportant.

Because beauty is rarely urgent.

The changing reflection in a rain puddle won’t help us survive. Neither will the rhythm of light moving across an old brick wall or the fleeting harmony between two colors that happened to meet for only a few seconds. The brain looks at those things, decides they aren’t necessary, and moves on.

Most of us never know what we’ve missed.

Artists spend their lives trying to find it again.

That has always fascinated me.

People often ask photographers how we find our subjects, as though the world has thoughtfully scattered them about like Easter eggs waiting to be discovered. I don’t think that’s what happens at all.

The subjects were always there.

The difference is that, little by little, we learn to distrust the brain’s first answer.

“This isn’t interesting.”

Says who?

Certainly not the light.

Certainly not the colors.

Certainly not the world itself.

Only the efficient little editor inside our heads, trying to help us get on with the business of the day.

Photography taught me that the first answer is almost never the most interesting one.

When I first arrive somewhere, my brain immediately begins assigning labels.

Street.

Building.

Tree.

Shadow.

Finished.

The labels are useful, but they are also limiting. Once something has been named, the mind has an unfortunate tendency to believe it has also been understood.

It hasn’t.

A tree is never just a tree.

It is gesture.

Texture.

Light.

Movement.

It is the way the morning sun catches one branch but leaves another in darkness. It is the conversation between the trunk and the empty space surrounding it. It is the changing relationship between the tree and everything beside it, a relationship that has never existed in exactly the same way before and never will again.

Labels close the door.

Observation quietly opens it again.

Children seem to understand this instinctively.

Watch a young child on a walk and you’ll notice that the journey takes forever. Every crack in the sidewalk deserves investigation. Every feather becomes a treasure. Every puddle contains another world.

Adults smile impatiently because the child is constantly distracted.

I sometimes wonder if the child is the only one who isn’t.

Perhaps creativity is nothing more mysterious than refusing to outgrow that habit.

The longer I’ve been an artist, the less interested I’ve become in finding extraordinary places.

Extraordinary places have never been in short supply.

Extraordinary attention is.

The camera eventually became almost secondary. It gave me a reason to stop, but it wasn’t responsible for what happened next. The real work began when I stayed with something longer than my brain thought necessary. Every additional moment seemed to reveal another layer that had been invisible only seconds before.

That realization escaped photography long ago.

Now it follows me everywhere.

I listen longer.

I look longer.

I question my assumptions more often.

I’ve become suspicious of the phrase, “I’ve seen that.”

Have I?

Or have I merely recognized it?

Those are very different things.

Recognition is immediate.

Seeing takes time.

Perhaps that’s why creativity has never felt to me like the act of inventing something new.

It feels more like recovering something that was there all along, patiently waiting beneath the labels, beneath the assumptions, beneath the efficient shortcuts of a remarkable brain that was doing exactly what it evolved to do.

Every artist eventually discovers that the world contains far more than the mind is willing to reveal.

Our work is not to create that hidden richness.

Our work is simply to remain still long enough to notice it.

No one talks very much about that moment.

At the beginning, everything is intoxicating. The idea arrives with such clarity that it almost seems to create itself. You can see the finished photograph before you’ve made it, the finished painting before the brush touches the canvas, the finished book before the first chapter has found its voice. Possibility is a marvelous companion because possibility has never failed.

Then, one day, the work begins.

The excitement that carried us through the first few hours gives way to something far less glamorous. We discover that the beautiful idea in our imagination is stubbornly unwilling to become the beautiful creation we had hoped for. It resists us. It asks more questions than it answers. Some days it seems to move forward almost effortlessly. Other days it sits in front of us in complete silence, refusing to reveal what it wants to become.

That is usually the point where people assume something has gone wrong.

I have come to believe exactly the opposite.

Nothing has gone wrong.

You have simply reached the place where every worthwhile creative endeavor eventually arrives.

The work has stopped entertaining you.

Now it is asking whether you love it enough to continue.

I think we misunderstand creativity because we spend too much time celebrating inspiration and too little time talking about perseverance. Inspiration receives the headlines. Perseverance does most of the work.

Every book I have written has reached a point where I became convinced it wasn’t very good. Every long project has contained afternoons when I could no longer remember why I had been so excited in the beginning. The distance between the original vision and the unfinished reality seemed impossible to cross.

Curiously, those moments have become reassuring.

Not enjoyable.

Reassuring.

I’ve lived through them often enough to recognize them as milestones rather than warnings.

If the work has begun arguing with me, it means I’ve reached the part where it starts demanding something in return. It no longer accepts the easy answers I was perfectly happy with at the beginning. It insists on becoming better than my first idea.

That is an uncomfortable process.

It is also a generous one.

The creations we cherish most rarely emerge exactly as we imagined them. Somewhere along the way they begin teaching us instead. They reveal possibilities we couldn’t see at the outset because we hadn’t yet done the work required to discover them.

I sometimes think that is why unfinished work can feel so lonely.

No one else can see what you are trying to accomplish.

They see only what exists today.

You alone are carrying the invisible version that still lives in your imagination, and there are days when even you begin to wonder whether it was ever there at all.

Yet somehow, we continue.

A sentence is rewritten.

A composition is refined.

An idea that seemed hopeless yesterday suddenly becomes clear the following morning.

Not because inspiration returned in dramatic fashion, but because we quietly kept showing up.

Perhaps that is the real difference between people who dream of creating and those who spend a lifetime doing it.

It isn’t that one group possesses more talent.

It isn’t that one group receives more inspiration.

It is that one group eventually learns to make peace with the lonely middle, that long stretch where the excitement has faded, the finish line is still out of sight, and the only thing carrying the work forward is the quiet conviction that it is worth another day.

Looking back, I have forgotten almost all of the difficult afternoons.

What remains is the finished work and the curious realization that every piece I value most once seemed impossible to finish.

That thought has become unexpectedly comforting.

Whenever a new project begins resisting me, I no longer assume it is failing.

I wonder instead whether it has finally become important enough to fight back.

Perhaps every meaningful act of creation contains such a moment.

The work falls silent.

The applause has not yet arrived.

No one can tell you whether it will ultimately succeed.

You continue anyway.

Not because certainty is carrying you.

Because hope is.

At the time I was sharing a great deal of street photography on Google+. That was a little unusual for me. My work had always leaned toward abstraction, but for a while the energy of city streets, near and far, captivated me. I found myself drawn to ordinary moments unfolding between ordinary people, and I spent months photographing life as it happened before eventually returning to the more interpretive work that has always felt like home.

One afternoon I received a note from a photographer whose work I admired enormously.

He photographed flowers.

Not in gardens.

He picked them, arranged them in baking dishes, covered them with water, froze them, and transformed them into luminous works of art unlike anything I had ever seen. They were quiet, elegant, and unmistakably his.

He told me he had been gathering the courage to write to me.

He had an idea.

Would I allow him to write a one-hundred-word story for each of my photographs? He warned me that his sense of humor could be a little irreverent, occasionally cynical, and completely unpredictable. If I agreed, we would create a book together.

I said yes without much hesitation.

Neither of us knew quite what we were beginning.

Over the following year, photographs traveled east from California to Tennessee. One hundred words traveled west. Every few days another story would arrive in my inbox.

I thought I knew my photographs.

Then I read what he saw.

Sometimes I laughed out loud.

Sometimes I simply sat in silence, wondering how he had discovered a story that had never occurred to me.

Once, he broke my heart.

The remarkable thing was that he wasn’t explaining my photographs.

He was having a conversation with them.

Every image became the beginning of something neither of us could have created alone. My photographs invited his imagination, and his words quietly changed the way I saw my own work. It wasn’t collaboration in the usual sense. It felt more like two creative lives taking turns finishing each other’s sentences.

There was another conversation unfolding at the same time.

It happened as asides in the emails.

Little pieces of ordinary life began finding their way into our correspondence. We talked about our families, our children, my grandchildren, where we lived, what made us laugh, and the quiet moments that never become part of anyone’s biography but somehow become part of a friendship.

Without ever planning it, we stopped being collaborators.

We became friends.

Eventually he invited me to visit him and his wife in Tennessee.

He took me to the Smoky Mountains he loved so deeply, and for several days we photographed together. Looking back, I sometimes think the trip wasn’t really about photography at all. It was simply two friends sharing time in a landscape he cherished, and one that left an equally lasting impression on me.

The book was called 100 Words.

I’ve often smiled at that title because the discipline of writing exactly one hundred words seems almost impossible to me. Every sentence had to carry its weight. Every unnecessary word had to disappear. Yet somehow, he made those tiny essays feel expansive. They could be wonderfully funny, surprisingly tender, and occasionally heartbreaking. They were never captions.

They were stories that had been patiently waiting inside the photographs until someone with his imagination discovered them.

He died a year ago.

I still miss him.

Not only because I lost a friend, but because I lost someone who taught me something extraordinary about creativity.

We often imagine that making art is a solitary pursuit. A photographer heads out alone. A writer sits alone at a keyboard. A painter stands alone before a canvas.

Perhaps that’s only where the story begins.

Sometimes the work reaches another creative soul, someone who sees the world differently enough to surprise us, yet similarly enough to understand us. The work becomes an introduction. A conversation begins. A friendship quietly takes root.

Looking back, I don’t think the greatest thing we created together was a book.

I think we created a friendship that neither of us could have imagined when he gathered the courage to send one simple email.

Every now and then, creativity gives us a masterpiece.

Every once in a great while...

...it gives us a friend.

I don’t think that confidence is entirely justified.

Several years ago, Canon conducted what they called the Obsession Experiment, using eye-tracking technology to study how three different people looked at exactly the same photograph. One participant had no background in photography. The second was a photography student. The third was the professional photographer.

The results were astonishing.

The non-photographer’s eyes made 212 movements as they examined the photograph.

The photography student’s eyes made 445.

The professional photographer’s eyes made an extraordinary 1,197.

Those numbers have stayed with me ever since.

Not because they prove professional photographers see more. I would have expected that.

What fascinates me is the person in the middle.

The student.

No one is born making 445 eye movements across a photograph.

That student had already begun changing the way they experienced the visual world. They were noticing relationships, textures, patterns, subtle changes in light and quiet visual conversations that had simply escaped their attention before they picked up a camera.

The professional photographer hadn’t arrived there overnight either. Those 1,197 eye movements represented years of curiosity layered upon curiosity, observation layered upon observation, until paying attention had become second nature.

That realization changed the way I think about photography.

In fact, it changed the way I think about creativity itself.

People often believe that learning a creative skill is about becoming better at producing something. Better photographs. Better paintings. Better music. Better writing.

I don’t think that’s the greatest gift creativity gives us.

I think it changes the way we experience being alive.

Long before I ever understood that, I discovered something about myself. The day I was gifted my first SLR camera, I immediately opened the instruction manual to find the section on multiple exposures. I wasn’t looking for the sharpest photograph or the most technically perfect one. I wanted to know whether I could transform reality into something more personal, more expressive, more imaginative.

Without realizing it, I had begun training my eyes.

Not simply to record the world...

...but to explore it.

That training didn’t stop when I put the camera down.

It followed me into every ordinary day.

I began noticing reflections that disappeared a few seconds later. Colors that unexpectedly belonged together. Patterns in concrete. Light drifting across walls. Fleeting moments of harmony that had almost certainly been there all along, but that my hurried brain had quietly edited out because they weren’t important for survival.

The world itself hadn’t changed.

My relationship with it had.

I sometimes wonder how many moments of quiet beauty surround us every single day without ever entering our awareness. Not because we’re careless. Our brains simply weren’t designed to examine every shadow, every texture, every subtle shift in color. They are wonderfully efficient, constantly deciding what deserves our attention and what can safely be ignored.

Artists spend their lives gently pushing back against that efficiency.

They linger a little longer.

They remain curious a little longer.

They keep asking, “What else is here?”

Photography happened to be the path that taught me those habits, but I don’t think the lesson belongs only to photographers. Every creative pursuit asks us to become more attentive. Writers begin hearing stories hidden inside ordinary conversations. Musicians discover rhythms in places that once seemed silent. Painters become captivated by colors most of us never consciously notice.

The work changes because the artist changes.

And that may be the greatest reward of all.

The photographs hanging on my wall have given me years of pleasure, but they are not the finest gift photography has ever given me.

The finest gift is that an ordinary Tuesday is no longer ordinary.

A walk to the grocery store contains more color than it once did.

An airport becomes a study in gesture and light.

A rainy afternoon reveals reflections that seem to exist for only a heartbeat.

The world has become infinitely richer, not because it changed, but because I did.

Perhaps that is what the Canon experiment was really measuring.

Not eye movements.

A way of living.

And I can’t imagine a more generous gift than learning, little by little, to discover that the world has been quietly offering us far more than we ever realized.

Every creative act begins in solitude.

Sometimes it’s a photograph.

Sometimes it’s a painting, a melody, a poem, a quilt, or a hand-thrown bowl.

Whatever form it takes, it begins as a quiet conversation between the creator and an idea that didn’t exist a moment before.

At first, the creation belongs entirely to us.

We nurture it. We shape it. We revise it. We decide when it’s finished. It lives on an easel, on a hard drive, in a notebook, or on a workbench. For days, months, sometimes even years, it remains part of our private world.

Then, one day, it leaves.

Recently, I received photographs from Tours, France, where five of my abstract photographs are currently on display as part of the ABSURIA International Festival of Abstract and Surrealist Photography. Looking at those installation photographs, I realized something I hadn’t expected.

Those images no longer belong only to me.

I still know where they were made. I remember the light, the emotions, and the quiet excitement of discovering each one. The act of creating them will always be part of me.

But the photographs themselves have moved on.

Now they belong to everyone who walks past them.

Someone may pause for only a few seconds.

Someone else may stand quietly for several minutes.

One person may see a landscape. Another may see memories. Someone else may simply be drawn to a color or a feeling without ever trying to explain why.

None of them will experience the photographs exactly as I did.

And that’s exactly as it should be.

We often feel an urge to explain what we’ve created. We tell people where the idea came from, what inspired it, how long it took, or what we hoped they would see.

Those stories matter. They are part of our creative journey.

But something beautiful happens when the work leaves us.

The person standing in front of a photograph, a painting, a sculpture, or even reading a story doesn’t arrive empty-handed. They bring a lifetime of experiences, memories, joys, losses, questions, and hopes. They see connections we never imagined because they aren’t looking through our eyes—they’re looking through their own.

The work becomes a meeting place.

It is no longer only about the artist.

It becomes a conversation between the creation and the person experiencing it.

Sometimes someone discovers a meaning we never consciously intended. Sometimes they simply pause because a color, a shape, or a sentence stirs something they can’t quite name.

Neither response is more correct than the other.

Once we release our work into the world, it begins to live its own life.

Perhaps that’s true of every creative act.

A novel leaves the writer.

A song leaves the composer.

A quilt leaves the hands that stitched it.

A handcrafted table eventually becomes part of another family’s memories.

A photograph leaves the photographer.

Every act of creation begins as something deeply personal. It carries a piece of us because it could not have existed without us. Yet if we’re fortunate, it eventually becomes something larger than ourselves.

It belongs to everyone who encounters it.

That may be the greatest gift creativity offers.

It reminds us that making something beautiful isn’t the end of the journey. It’s the beginning of someone else’s.

Long after we’ve put down the camera, the paintbrush, the pen, the needle, or the chisel, our work continues introducing itself to strangers.

It speaks in ways we never anticipated.

It evokes emotions we never planned.

It forms connections we’ll never witness.

And perhaps that is exactly what creativity is meant to do.

Not to preserve the creator’s voice unchanged...

...but to become part of someone else’s story.

A person.

A city street.

A flower.

A bird.

A mountain.

But I sometimes wonder if every photograph is really about the same subject.

Time.

The mountain appears permanent.

The photograph reminds us it is not.

The child in the family portrait grows older.

The city changes.

The tree falls.

The building disappears.

The people we love eventually become memories.

Photography performs a curious act.

It rescues a moment from the relentless movement of time.

Not permanently.

Nothing escapes permanently.

But long enough for us to revisit it.

Long enough to remember.

Long enough to feel something we thought had been lost.

This may explain why photographs can surprise us years after they are made.

The image itself has not changed.

The pixels remain the same.

The paper remains the same.

Yet the experience of viewing it can feel entirely different.

A photograph made ten years ago often tells us less about the moment it depicts than about the person viewing it now.

We bring new experiences.

New losses.

New joys.

New understanding.

The photograph remains still while we continue moving.

Perhaps that is why old photographs can sometimes feel emotional in ways we never expected.

A picture that once seemed ordinary suddenly becomes precious.

A casual snapshot becomes a family treasure.

A forgotten photograph becomes a doorway.

Not because the photograph changed.

Because time changed us.

There is something beautiful in that.

Photography is often described as a way of preserving the past.

I am not sure that is entirely true.

The other in the person we have become.

Perhaps that is why photography remains such a powerful medium.

Not because it stops time.

Because it reminds us that time never stops.

And because every photograph, no matter what it depicts, quietly whispers the same truth.

This moment mattered.

It will never happen again.

We spend our lives surrounded by visual information. Streets. Trees. Buildings. Faces. Sunsets. Shadows. We look at thousands of things every day.

Yet very little of it truly registers.

Ask someone to describe the last ten minutes of their drive home and they will often struggle. They looked at the road the entire time. But they did not really see it.

The distinction matters.

Looking is automatic.

Seeing is intentional.

Looking gathers information. Seeing discovers meaning.

A camera is perfectly capable of looking.

That is, after all, what cameras do. They record whatever is placed in front of them. They are remarkably good at description.

But photography has never been about description alone.

If it were, the most meaningful photographs would simply be the most accurate ones.

The sharpest.

The most detailed.

The most faithful reproductions of reality.

Yet history suggests otherwise.

Many of the photographs that stay with us are not memorable because of what they show.

They are memorable because of what they reveal.

A photograph of a chair can become a meditation on absence.

A photograph of fog can become a photograph about mystery.

A photograph of light falling across a wall can evoke a feeling that has no name.

The subject matters less than we often imagine.

The photographer’s way of seeing matters far more.

This may be why two photographers can stand shoulder to shoulder, point their cameras at the same scene, and come away with entirely different images.

The landscape is identical.

The light is identical.

The moment is identical.

Only the seeing is different.

One photographer notices the mountain.

Another notices the atmosphere.

One notices detail.

Another notices emotion.

One photographs what is there.

The other photographs what it feels like to be there.

Neither approach is wrong.

But they are not the same.

Many photographers begin their journey believing photography is about finding better subjects.

A more dramatic landscape.

A more exotic location.

A more spectacular sunset.

Over time, some discover that the deeper challenge is not finding something worth photographing.

It is learning to see what was already there.

The extraordinary hidden inside the ordinary.

The feeling hidden inside the scene.

The photograph hidden inside the subject.

This shift changes everything.

Suddenly photography becomes less about collecting images and more about paying attention.

Less about documentation and more about discovery.

Less about the world itself and more about our relationship with it.

Perhaps that is why photography remains endlessly fascinating.

Not because it allows us to look at the world.

Because it teaches us how to see it.

And once we begin seeing differently, the world itself begins to change.

The other is the photograph I remember.

The file contains everything I created in the field. The movement is there. The layers are there. The design is there. The photograph is complete.

Yet there is often something missing.

I remember the warmth of the light. The atmosphere that surrounded the scene. The feeling that stopped me in my tracks and compelled me to raise the camera.

The camera records the structure of the experience.

Memory preserves the emotion.

For me, processing has never been about changing a photograph. The image was created in the camera. The movement, abstraction, and visual relationships that define my work are already there.

What processing allows me to do is something far more subtle.

It allows me to move the photograph closer to the feeling I experienced when I made it.

A touch more luminosity.

A little more atmosphere.

A shift in color that better reflects the emotional temperature of the moment.

Not a different photograph.

A more complete expression of the one that already exists.

Buildings.

Faces.

Flowers.

Wildlife.

We learn to identify a subject, isolate it, sharpen it, expose it correctly, and place it carefully within a frame.

The camera rewards us for doing so.

But motion is different.

Motion refuses to hold still long enough to become a thing.

You cannot point at motion.

You cannot place it neatly in the center of the frame.

You cannot draw a precise outline around it.

The moment you try, it becomes something else.

Yet motion may be the most constant reality we experience.

Clouds move.

Water moves.

Wind moves.

Light moves.

Even the landscape itself changes with every passing second.

Nothing is truly still.

Only our photographs are.

Perhaps that is why many photographers feel unsettled when they first encounter images that emphasize movement rather than objects. The mind immediately begins searching for familiar anchors.

What is it?

Where is it?

What am I looking at?

The questions reveal something interesting. We have been trained to believe a photograph’s primary purpose is identification.

To recognize.

To label.

To explain.

But what if a photograph could do something else?

What if it could evoke rather than describe?

What if it could communicate the sensation of standing in a place rather than simply documenting what was there?

A memory is rarely sharp.

A dream is rarely literal.

Emotion certainly isn’t.

The experiences that stay with us most often arrive as fragments. Colors. Rhythms. Hints. Impressions.

Movement.

Perhaps this is why photographs that embrace motion feel so different. They are speaking a language we recognize but rarely use.

A language closer to memory than documentation.

Closer to feeling than fact.

Closer to experience than evidence.

I suspect that is why I keep returning to them.

Not because they show me what the world looks like.

But because they remind me what it feels like to be inside it.

The question seemed reasonable.

After all, cameras are extraordinary machines. They can record astonishing detail. Every year they become better at it. More resolution. More precision. More clarity.

Photography, it seemed, was a quest toward perfect description.

And yet I have never once returned to an old family photograph because it was sharp.

I have never stared at a treasured image and thought about its resolution.

I have never been moved by a photograph because the eyelashes were perfectly rendered.

What I remember are the feelings.

The atmosphere.

The sense of a moment that can never be repeated.

Sharpness is easy to measure.

Emotion is not.

Perhaps that is why sharpness became photography’s religion.

We can compare it.

Test it.

Rank it.

Argue about it.

It offers certainty in a medium that is otherwise deeply subjective.

No one can prove whether a photograph is beautiful.

But anyone can zoom in to 400 percent and inspect a corner.

The measurable often wins.

Not because it matters most.

Because it is easier to discuss.

Over time, many photographers begin chasing technical perfection almost by default. Better lenses. Better sensors. Better autofocus. Better stabilization.

There is nothing wrong with any of those things.

But I sometimes wonder if they quietly shift our attention away from a more important question.

Not “How sharp is this image?”

But “How does this image make me feel?”

The two questions are not the same.

One concerns information.

The other concerns experience.

And experience is what most viewers carry away.

Years later, they may forget the subject entirely.

But they will remember the feeling of standing before the image.

The sense of mystery.

The sense of calm.

The sense of wonder.

Or perhaps the sense that something was just beyond understanding.

Those things cannot be measured.

They cannot be graphed.

They cannot be compared on a specification sheet.

Yet they may be the very reason photography matters.

Sharpness is a remarkable tool.

But it is still only a tool.

The photograph itself lives somewhere beyond it.

In a place where memory, emotion, imagination, and experience meet.

And that place has never cared much about pixels.

She had gone out with sincerity and openness. She had found scenes that resonated emotionally. She had experimented, surrendered control, tried to trust instinct - and returned home with hundreds of images that felt like failures.

Not weak photographs.

Not unfinished photographs.

Images that did not even seem to qualify as images at all.

There is something uniquely disorienting about beginning Intentional Camera Movement photography because it dismantles many of the instincts photography normally rewards.

And for a while, it can feel less like learning and more like losing your footing entirely.

The Discomfort Is Deeper Than Technique

Most photographers enter ICM believing the struggle is primarily technical.

They assume there is some missing understanding - a setting, a method, a piece of knowledge - that separates successful images from unsuccessful ones.

But I do not think the deepest difficulty is technical.

I think it is perceptual.

Traditional photography teaches us to trust clarity. Sharpness. Description. Control. We spend years learning how to stabilize the world visually.

ICM interrupts that relationship.

Suddenly the photograph no longer explains itself immediately. The image becomes less literal and more emotional. Meaning becomes harder to pin down. Certainty dissolves.

For many photographers, this creates an unexpected form of anxiety.

Not because the camera is difficult.

Because ambiguity is.

Your Eye Changes Before Your Work Does

One of the strangest phases in any artistic process happens when perception evolves faster than execution.

You begin recognizing when something lacks emotional coherence long before you understand how to create coherence intentionally.

You can feel the difference between an image that is merely chaotic and one that feels alive.

But you cannot yet consistently cross the distance between the two.

That gap can feel merciless.

Especially for experienced photographers accustomed to competence.

And yet I increasingly suspect this phase is necessary.

The frustration itself is evidence that something in the artist is becoming more perceptive.

ICM Is Not Merely Photography With Motion Added

This is where I think many people misunderstand the medium initially.

Movement in ICM is not simply an effect placed on top of a photograph.

The movement becomes part of the emotional language of the image itself.

Different gestures carry different psychological qualities. Some images feel restless. Others feel meditative, fragile, turbulent, melancholic, dreamlike, unresolved.

Over time, photographers begin sensing these emotional differences intuitively, often before they can articulate them clearly.

The process becomes less about recording objects and more about responding to atmosphere, rhythm, memory, and feeling.

That shift can take years to fully trust.

The Need to Force Meaning

I think beginners often become discouraged because they expect every frame to justify itself immediately.

Traditional photography trains us toward recognizability. We are accustomed to images that announce their subject quickly and confidently.

ICM rarely behaves that way.

Some images reveal themselves slowly.
Some never resolve at all.
Some contain emotion before they contain explanation.

This uncertainty can feel intolerable at first.

But over time, many photographers begin discovering that ambiguity itself can hold extraordinary emotional power.

Not every image needs to declare itself fully in order to be felt deeply.

The Keeper Rate Becomes Emotionally Complicated

ICM also changes the emotional mathematics of photography.

In more conventional work, technical competence often produces predictability. A photographer can leave knowing roughly what was achieved.

ICM does not always offer that reassurance.

Sometimes hundreds of frames yield almost nothing visually. What is forgotten are the lessons learned in making them. The brain is collecting, collecting, both consciously and subliminally. It’s your database.

This unpredictability can either exhaust a photographer or transform the way they think about art entirely.

Because eventually the process stops feeling transactional.

The work becomes less about producing successful photographs and more about learning to recognize rare moments of emotional alignment when they appear.

What Changes First Is the Photographer

I sometimes think people imagine they are learning a technique when they begin ICM.

But often something else is happening.

Their relationship with uncertainty changes.
Their tolerance for ambiguity changes.
Their understanding of beauty changes.
Even their relationship with control begins to shift.

And gradually the world itself starts appearing differently.

Light becomes less descriptive.
Motion becomes expressive.
Atmosphere becomes structural.
Emotion becomes visible.

At some point the photographer realizes the work was never solely about movement.

The movement was simply the doorway.

Everything is visible. Every detail accounted for. Every edge resolved. The image leaves nothing uncertain.

And yet somehow, it can feel like less.

I do not mean less technically accomplished. I mean less emotionally true.

The world itself is not experienced in frozen perfection. We move through it. We remember fragments of it. Light shifts. People pass. Wind alters shape. Emotion interferes with perception. Memory softens edges long before time does.

Yet photography has spent decades convincing us that clarity is the highest form of honesty.

I no longer believe that.

One of the reasons I was drawn toward ICM, Intentional Camera Movement photography, was not because I wanted to abandon reality. It was because I wanted to photograph the way certain moments actually felt.

There are experiences that sharp photography describes beautifully. Architecture. Detail. Documentation. Wildlife behavior. Precision matters there. But there are other moments where perfect sharpness begins to feel strangely artificial, almost clinical, as though the camera is recording surfaces while missing the atmosphere entirely.

The Shape of Memory

A forest in wind does not feel static to stand inside.

Water does not feel frozen.

Cities at night are not experienced as perfectly resolved lines and geometric certainty. They pulse. Reflections shift. Light smears itself across wet pavement. Human beings move through them in partial glimpses.

Memory itself behaves more like ICM than traditional photography.

When I create intentional camera movement images, I am not trying to make the photograph unclear. I am trying to reveal something that clarity often hides beneath description.

Rhythm.

Motion.

Temperature.

Instability.

Emotion.

The photograph becomes less about identifying an object and more about experiencing a presence.

Leaving Space Inside the Frame

This is one reason abstract photography unsettles some viewers. We have trained ourselves to believe that recognition equals meaning. If we can immediately identify the subject, we feel secure inside the image.

But abstraction asks something more difficult.

It asks the viewer to participate.

ICM removes certainty first.

And then, unexpectedly, interpretation begins.

People often tell me they “see” things in my photographs that I never consciously intended. A memory. A mood. A place from childhood. Grief. Calm. Loneliness. Sometimes they describe emotions so specific they feel almost impossible.

Years ago, I might have thought that meant the photograph had failed to communicate clearly.

Now I think the opposite.

I think the photograph finally became large enough for someone else to enter it.

Sharp photography often answers the question too quickly. ICM leaves space inside the frame. The ambiguity becomes part of the experience itself.

That ambiguity is not an accident.

It is the entire point.

The Difference Between Information and Experience

The camera is extraordinarily good at recording information. But information alone is not the same thing as perception. It is not the same thing as memory. And it is certainly not the same thing as feeling.

Some of the most emotionally honest moments I have ever photographed are images where almost nothing is sharply defined.

A stand of trees dissolving into vertical motion.

City lights stretched into color fields.

Ocean water turning itself into atmosphere.

The literal subject matters less than the sensation left behind.

That is what interests me now.

Not whether the camera can perfectly reproduce reality.

It can.

The more difficult question is whether a photograph can reproduce experience.

And sometimes, strangely enough, blur gets closer than sharpness ever could.

In my practice of ICM street photography, I find myself perpetually hunting for these frequencies. It isn’t about documenting a location; I couldn’t care less about the “where.” I am looking for the lines, shapes, and colors that suggest a hidden rhythm. It’s a visual improvisation. You spot a golden reflection bouncing off a glass facade, a sharp green light from a traffic signal, and the deep, heavy silhouette of a passerby. In that instant, the world is just a palette waiting for the right move.

The Dance of Timing and Motion

Photography is often described as “capturing” time, as if we are hunters trapping a prey. I prefer to think of it as negotiating with time. When I move, the world moves with me. We traverse liminal time.

The transition from a static, literal scene to an abstract, lyrical one is a matter of timing and moves. It is a physical shift - a tilt, a pan, a deliberate breath - that stretches the light into something silken. I don’t follow a recipe for this; there are no “exacts” because the light never hits the same way twice. You have to trust that by blurring the edges of reality, you are actually getting closer to the truth of how a moment feels.

Finding Your Own Rhythm

We often spend too much time obsessing over the technical execution and not enough on the visual storytelling of the street. I’ve always believed that a vertical smear of gold can evoke the heat of a summer afternoon more effectively than a sharp photo of a sunlit wall ever could.

The photograph was technically perfect. Exposed at 1/125th of a second. Sharp from edge to edge. Well-weighted within the frame. A clean, honest image of Ocean Beach in San Francisco on a sunny afternoon.

It was also completely wrong.

That image, sitting in my camera’s memory card, told none of the story that mattered. It couldn’t tell you that this was the first genuinely warm, sunny day after weeks of relentless wind and rain. It couldn’t tell you that people were giddy — that there was an almost electric euphoria humming through the crowd on that beach. That laughter was threading through the salt air like a visible thing.

The technically perfect photograph was a snapshot. And snapshots, for all their clarity, are the lie we most readily accept.

What I saw, and more importantly, felt that day is not evident in that image.

Here’s something photographers rarely talk about: we don’t actually see the world the way our cameras do. We see it in two modes simultaneously. There’s the thing we’re focusing on — sharp, specific, named. And then there’s everything else — sensed, felt, peripheral. The buzz of a crowd. The warmth radiating off sand. The way collective joy has a physical texture.

That second mode of seeing? It lives in your peripheral vision. It’s not soft focus. It’s not blur for blur’s sake. It’s the feeling layer of an experience — the part that gets into your body before it ever reaches your mind.

Standing on that beach, I could feel the festivity. The air had a buzz to it. And I knew — the way you know a thing before you can explain it — that a perfectly focused, perfectly exposed photograph would strip all of that out. It would leave me with a document instead of a memory.

So, I let my eyes relax. I let them drift. And it was still there — that peripheral vision that has always been a welcome companion.

The same beach. The camera breathes. Time collected, not frozen - shapes, textures, colors, and the feeling of a day the snapshot couldn’t hold.

The Little Dance

What I do next is hard to explain clinically, so I won’t try to. I slow down time. I let the camera breathe with me. It’s a little dance — making sure the camera becomes an extension of my own being rather than a machine I’m operating. And then I let it move. Just a bit.

Not randomly. Not carelessly. The camera sways the way you sway when you’re taking in something that delights you. The sensor collects shapes, textures, colors, and movement — not a frozen instant, but a small piece of gathered time.

This is Intentional Camera Movement. And the word that matters most in that phrase is intentional. I’ve collected some time in this photograph. But like time, which never stands still, I didn’t stand still either — nor did my camera.

I collect liminal time when I shoot – those moments between the past and the unfolding future – always moving, never standing still.

I could have taken this Ocean Beach photograph the ordinary way. I could have been technically precise and produced something correct in every measurable sense. But I can promise you it would not carry the magic that this shot contains. Magic isn’t a word I use loosely. It means: something is present in an image that cannot be explained by its technical components.

The camera moves with the photographer. Gathered time: what the moment felt like,

rendered visible.

The Question Worth Asking

Most of us were trained — formally or through years of looking at photographs — to equate sharpness with quality. The sharpest image wins. The most perfectly exposed image wins. This is understandable. These are measurable things, and measurable things feel safer.

But photographs aren’t only documents. At their best, they’re transmission — they carry an experience from the photographer’s body into the viewer’s body. And for that kind of transmission, feeling is the signal, not the noise.

So here’s the question I’d invite you to sit with: What are you actually trying to capture when you raise your camera? The scene? Or the experience of being inside it?

If it’s the latter — if what you want is to carry the feeling of a place or a moment forward in time — then perfection might be your biggest obstacle. Your peripheral vision already knows what the moment felt like. The question is whether you’ll trust it enough to let it lead.

The motion is there. The blur is there. The shutter speed is slow enough. The camera moved. And yet - the image feels chaotic. Restless. Like something went wrong, even when you can’t pinpoint what.

This is one of the most common challenges in ICM photography. And it rarely has anything to do with camera settings.

Chaos Isn’t the Same as Expression

There’s a seductive idea in abstract photography that freedom from sharpness means freedom from rules. That once you introduce motion, anything goes. That the unpredictability is part of the appeal.

Sometimes it is. But there’s a difference between productive tension and visual noise - and most photographers can feel it even before they can name it.

In creative camera movement, every movement leaves a trace. A sweep. A streak. A layering of light against light. They give clarity of direction and purpose; those traces build on one another. They create rhythm. They create flow.

When they don’t, they compete.

The result isn’t abstract photography with impact. It’s an image that exhausts the eye rather than inviting it in.

Intentional Camera Movement depends on more than slowing the shutter and moving the camera. Without structure - without lines, tonal contrast, rhythm, shape, something for the motion to move with - movement can dissolve everything at once. And when nothing anchors the image, the viewer has nowhere to rest. Nowhere to enter. Nowhere to stay.

That’s when ICM photography begins to feel chaotic rather than intentional.

The Subtle Shift

Strong Intentional Camera Movement photography holds something steady inside the motion.

Not sharpness. Not a focal point in the traditional sense. But coherence - a sense that the image knows what it is, even while everything in it is moving.

There is a feeling that the camera’s direction belonged to this subject, in this light, at this moment. That it responded rather than imposed. That the motion and the scene arrived at the same answer.

That distinction is subtle. But it changes everything about whether an image holds together or falls apart.

This image - “Anchored in the Afterglow” - was made on an evening in Sausalito. Multiple exposure, intentional camera movement, everything done in camera and blended in dark mode. I knew when I made it that something had come together. The light was doing what evening light does in that harbor, and the boats were just present enough to anchor what could have dissolved entirely into abstraction.

What I did not know was what someone else would find in it.

Let’s begin with, and stay with, the image.

It could be argued that photography has always existed between a range of possibilities.

On one side, we have the photo-real. On the other side, we have the abstract. And while neither extreme can achieve one hundred percent - every photo-real image has an element of the made-object to it in that its framing excludes more than it includes, and its exposure values are choices which come from the photographer’s sensibilities, all of which direct and influence interpretation and meaning, while the entirely abstract still has some micro speck of real-world reference, even if it’s only through negation - it is nonetheless instructive to ask every now and then how can we use the range to find a home for expression.

Documentary photographers are informed by fine art aesthetics. Abstract photographers are informed by real-world innuendo.

Look at this wonderful image, “Anchored in the Afterglow,” by Roxanne Bouché Overton.

As a matter of technique, this is multiple exposure and intentional camera movement, both elements which lean toward the abstract side of the range of photographic approaches. But, like any good fiction, the techniques tend to approach, metaphorically, some kind of emotional clarity more directly than the photo-real.

For an image which presents itself, at least to me, as peaceful and tranquil, there is an awful lot going on here. It’s immediately apparent this is some kind of harbor. The vertical lines are masts of sailboats. The lower right half of the image is water reflecting those boats, and from the sky and the image’s title we can assume we are approaching sunset.

Safe harbor. Boats at anchor. The scene is almost archetypal. The little bit of photorealism reference helps ground what I’m looking at and provides a springboard into the majority of the effort here, which is emotional response and interpretation.

Strictly in terms of balance, this image is extraordinary. The harbor and boats, which exist pretty much in the center, take up a wide portion of the frame on the left and diminish along a receding leading line to the right. There is balance above and below the horizon line, yet the line itself has a narrative change to it, which is engaging. Also, the hulls of the boats are more clear to the left, more diffused to the right, which adds to the ongoing narrative development.

Notice how the reflections in the water are not equal to what’s above the center line. There are ripples in the water which, of course, are not reflected in the sky, but the bands of light in the sky do not exist in the water either. So while there is equal balance of space top and bottom, there isn’t the kind of repetition which might lead to a more formalist analysis, or in the worst case, an underimagined repetition. The difference between the two roughly equal spaces rewards a viewer’s curiosity.

Nonetheless, what’s most interesting, for me, is twofold here. First, the masts, reading the image left to right, remind me of looking at an oscilloscope. For me, they become graph lines along a developing center line. The high and low points are points of maximum volume, where something is actually being said or some instrument is being played. There are one thousand other kinds of graphs which could be imagined here, an EKG for example, but no matter what, the image has a dance or life to it as it goes left to right because of the varying heights. The fact that none of the masts have the kind of sharpness of the photoreal leaves me to focus on the emotional weight of the shapes and their reflection in the water.

The second most interesting thing in this image, for me, is the use of color and tone. While the reds toward the middle might be an accident of what boats were in the harbor that day, there’s still an artistic choice from the point of the photographer in terms of how to frame the image. So the centered red is intentional. That redness is a kind of energy which, even though the image is serene, compels attention. Look at how we have both vertical and horizontal red in the center of this image. A little bit of the red is picked up in the water as well.

At the same time, the cool tones of the masts and the water give this image the peaceful mood. The water is smooth, troubled only by the little wind ripples, which adds to the calm.

The band of light through what I assume are alternating layers of clouds is a warmer tone, which does not reflect the tones of the water but does balance the water by counterpoint. This is another example of where energy, by which I mean a home for curiosity and consideration, resides.

This image makes brilliant use of foreground, middle ground and background. The foreground water ripples bottom left allow us to perceive depth as we get to the boats in the center and then the hills in the background. So not only do we have the oscilloscope as we read left to right, we have a perceivable change in depth as we go from bottom left to center back.

There is a bright-ish line which lends left to right through this image, the hulls of the boats, yet the more I look at it, the more I see that while it is that center line which balances the sun up above and the water below, it also disappears when we get to the far right. This gradual disappearance creates an open-ended space for the mind.

There is also open-ended-ness in the way that oceans, or any large body of water, have always carried metaphoric weight. To have that energy rest as invisible potential for nearly half of this image - the lower right - is one of the things I think makes this image especially poignant.

With every bit of visual art, it would be possible to say there are two immediate questions: what do you see and how does it make you feel? An artist can weight those two questions differently, depending upon intent.

What do I see here? I see a harbor, a bunch of boats at mooring on a calm day. But just as a painter would choose watercolors over acrylic for a certain emotional expression, the choice of multiple exposure and intentional camera movement here is asking me to approach this image more with my heart than with my brain.

How does it make me feel? The balance of warm and cool, the energy of the masts and the sky, are set in soft-focus smoothness, so I get both energy and peace.

What strikes me most reading this is how much Olsen found in the image that I put there without being fully conscious of it - and how much he found that I simply could not have put there, because it came from his own history of looking.

That, I think, is what it means for a photograph to work. Not that it delivers a fixed message. But that it creates a space where someone else can arrive and find something true.

ICM photography, done in camera with genuine intent, is particularly capable of this. The technique doesn’t close the image down. It opens it.

There’s a boathouse on the water I’ve driven past dozens of times. Old wood gone dark with rain, a sign that says Launch For Hire in letters nobody’s touched since the 1970s. Fog sitting low. The whole thing reflected in water that can’t quite decide if it’s still or moving.

The sharp photograph tells you what it is. The structure. The pilings. The grain of the boards. It’s honest, accurate, and in some important sense - incomplete.

Because standing there that morning, what I felt wasn’t geometry. I felt time. I felt the weight of a building that had been waiting on the water for a very long time, and the strange tenderness of stumbling across something that nobody had thought to restore or demolish. The fog moved. I breathed. Nothing was still.

Moving on purpose

Intentional camera movement - ICM - is one of those techniques that sounds like an accident until you do it deliberately. You change your exposure to let more time in. You find your line, the direction along which the feeling wants to travel. Then you move with the scene, not against it. You breathe into it.

With the boathouse, I needed a longer exposure and a slight shift in perspective to line things up. The building had a horizontal energy - long and low on the water - so I chose a line that honored that. And then I let the camera drift as I exhaled, a slow and deliberate movement that isn’t random at all. It’s a decision. You’re choosing to be in the image, to let your body become part of the shutter.

What comes back from the camera isn’t blur. It’s motion that was always there, made visible. The fog was always moving. The water was always choosing. The building was always both solid and fading at once.

Fact and feeling aren’t opposites

I think we’ve been trained - by decades of photography culture, by social media grids, by the expectation of sharpness - to believe that a good photograph is a clear one. That clarity equals truth.

But there’s another kind of truth. The kind you access not by freezing a moment but by surrendering to it a little. By asking: what did this feel like? And then by finding the camera technique that answers that question instead of the more obvious one.

The sharp boathouse and the ICM boathouse are both true. They just answer different questions. One says: here is what existed. The other says: here is what it meant to be there.

Most of us have been taught to only ask the first question.

“The technique is the smallest part of it. The larger thing is learning to ask what a place feels like, not just what it looks like.”

Why I keep coming back to this

There’s a reason ICM images stop people. It isn’t nostalgia, though they can carry that. It isn’t softness, though they have it. It’s recognition - a kind of visual echo of the way memory actually works. We don’t remember in sharp detail. We remember in atmosphere. We remember how things felt in our body. We remember light and weight and the sensation of a moment, not its pixel count.

When a photograph looks like memory, something opens in the viewer. They don’t just see the boathouse. They feel their own version of standing by quiet water, something ageing beautifully nearby, fog making everything feel provisional and vast.

That’s the reach that interests me. Not documentation. Resonance.
