Quite the weekend. Warsh used Jackson Hole on Friday to remind everyone that rate hikes are still on the menu, and markets responded by pricing September hike odds above 60%. Then on Sunday the US struck Iranian rocket launchers that were preparing to mine the Strait of Hormuz. Oil jumped over 3%. Energy names are green across the board this morning.

And the index? Down about a tenth of a percent. The market read all of that and hit snooze.

Except that calm is doing a lot of work. Hawkish Fed plus hot oil is the exact recipe for the inflation story nobody wanted back, yields are pressing higher globally, and the August jobs report lands Friday. Meanwhile SPY has spent two weeks slouching around within 2% of the 7,800 record on thin volume. Compressed range, loaded calendar, month-end flows today. That is not boring. That is a spring.

That is the setup that makes this week interesting. Nvidia reports tomorrow after the close, and the tape has spent a week de-risking into it, which cuts both ways: expectations get lowered, but so does the benefit of the doubt. Meanwhile Washington rolled out what the Treasury Secretary called the largest coordinated economic isolation campaign in history against Iran, and oil fell on the news rather than rising, sanctions details mattering more than sanctions headlines. Yields eased with it. And gold quietly printed its highest level since May, which tells you where some of that rotating money is actually going.

Then Friday, the main event: Warsh speaks at Jackson Hole with the pressure on him to hike sitting in plain view. So the week’s structure is simple and brutal. Tuesday and Wednesday morning are positioning. Wednesday night Nvidia decides the AI trade’s next leg. Friday the Fed chair decides the rate path. Everything in between is the market holding its breath in an August tape thin enough to exaggerate every opinion.

The S&P 500 did something Thursday it has never done before. It closed above 7,800. Soft inflation data all week knocked rate hike odds down hard, QQQ ripped over 1%, and buyers finished the session in full control.

Then this morning at 8:30 AM EST, the consumer blinked. July retail sales fell 0.6% against expectations for a small gain, the steepest monthly drop since May 2025. One week after negative payrolls, that is now two straight data points saying the same thing. The economy underneath this record tape is cooling.

Here is today’s tension. Weak data has been fuel for this rally because it kills the rate hike case. But there is a line where soft becomes too soft, where the market stops celebrating lower rate odds and starts pricing actual slowdown. Nobody rings a bell at that line. The profile shows you when institutions think we’ve crossed it.

Add Michigan consumer sentiment at 10:00 AM EST and weekend headline risk on Iran, and this Friday is anything but quiet.

CPI came in tame Wednesday. Headline up 0.1%, core up 0.2%, both right on consensus. The market took the news exactly how you’d expect, pushing back toward record highs as rate hike fears cooled off.

Here is the thing about relief rallies at all-time highs. They still have to prove acceptance. Price visiting a level and price building value at a level are two very different events, and the difference is where this week’s money gets made or given back.

Two catalysts frame today’s session. PPI hits at 8:30 AM EST, the second half of the inflation picture the Fed is waiting on before September. And Applied Materials reports after the close, a direct read on the AI trade that has been carrying this entire tape.

At 8:30 AM EST the July employment report printed negative 23,000 payrolls against consensus near positive 80,000. Unemployment fell to 4.1%, but for the wrong reason. Participation dropped to 61.4%, its lowest level in over five years. This is the first negative print of the cycle, and it lands one week after a 9 to 3 Fed hold, with markets pricing better than even odds of a September hike as recently as yesterday. That pricing is now being repriced in real time.

Layer on the energy tape. Brent jumped over 4% Thursday on the Iran and Oman framework for the Strait of Hormuz, which stops short of a full reopening. Weak labor data plus elevated oil is the exact combination that forces institutions to reposition, and repositioning shows up at levels.

Monday’s map said the reclaims get graded. The market graded them in about ninety minutes and then spent the rest of the day handing out extra credit. SPY opened at 749.44, retested the 749 to 750 band to the penny, absorbed it, and never traded below 748.80 all session. That was the entire fight. The close at 757.67, up 1.42 percent, put the index within three dollars of its 52-week high, and this morning’s premarket at 759.40 puts it within one. The band that rejected four rallies in July needed exactly one session as support to send price to the ceiling of the entire year.

QQQ did not bother with the referendum. Monday’s letter framed 692 to 693 as a second attempt after Friday’s rejection, a level to be fought over. QQQ gapped through it at the open, cleared 695.77 before most coffee was finished, took 698.5, and closed at 700.07, up 1.76 percent, above every repair level on the map. The premarket at 706.22 sits above the 702 to 702.5 shelf, the July 22 level this letter has called the full-repair marker for two weeks. The V is not forming. The V formed. A correction that took three weeks to build was repaired in five sessions, which tells you exactly how much of the decline was positioning and how little was conviction.

The fuel was geopolitical. Trump announced he had called off what he described as a massive attack on Iran and said negotiations would begin Monday, crediting regional allies including Saudi Arabia for urging diplomacy. Oil, which had climbed over 20 percent in July on the war, gave the relief trade back in one session: WTI fell roughly 6 percent below 80, Brent dropped under 84, and the 10-year yield, which touched 4.747 percent Friday, eased to 4.67. The fine print matters, Iran denied holding direct talks with the US while confirming Oman-mediated discussions on Hormuz are progressing, and the strait stays closed until the war is over. The market bought the pause anyway. Peace does not need to be real to be tradeable for a day.

Then the tape stacked the rest. ISM manufacturing printed 55.6 against roughly 54 expected, the highest since May 2022, with production at its best level since November 2021 and employment expanding for the first time in 33 months. Amazon crossed 3 trillion dollars of market cap. And after the close, Palantir posted the quarter of the season: revenue up 93 percent, US commercial revenue up 149 percent, earnings 41 cents against 35 expected, guidance raised again. The stock is up roughly 16 percent premarket. Somewhere an analyst is updating a model that said 71 percent growth was the ceiling.

The counter-current has not left the room. Korea fell another 5 percent Monday and is down again today, with Samsung and SK Hynix still bleeding after the worst KOSPI month since 2008, a standing reminder that the global AI hardware complex has not been forgiven, merely furloughed. ISM’s prices index held above 70 for a sixth straight month, September hike odds sit near 63 percent, and Friday’s payroll report still owns the week’s verdict. Today brings JOLTS and factory orders at 10:00 AM EST, then AMD and SpaceX’s first report as a public company after the close. SPY is one dollar from 760.40. All-time highs are not resistance until they are.

The Setup: All-Time Highs Are Not a Level. They Are a Question.

The bulls have everything except a discount. Five sessions ago QQQ printed a formal correction low; this morning it trades above its full-repair shelf and SPY sits one dollar from the highest price it has ever recorded in the past year. The converted band at 749 to 750 passed its first test as support with a two-point margin. Earnings season keeps escalating, Palantir just grew 93 percent at scale, Amazon is a 3 trillion dollar company, and ISM says manufacturing is running its hottest since 2022 while finally hiring again. The war that spent July setting the tape’s ceiling took a day off, and oil handed back its front edge. When the biggest overhead supply left in the ladder is a single print at 760.40, the map above is mostly imagination.

The bears have the calendar, the chips, and the arithmetic of exhaustion. This is now a four-session, 4 percent SPY rally and a 6.8 percent QQQ rally into the year’s high with the week’s actual verdict, Friday’s payrolls, still unopened. September odds near 63 percent did not fall on the peace headline. ISM’s own report argues both directions at once, growth accelerating while prices sit above 70, which is precisely the mix that keeps a hike live. Korea is the tell the bears keep pointing to, the KOSPI is falling through good news, and the AI hardware complex worldwide remains unforgiven. And the pause is a pause: Iran denies direct talks, Hormuz is closed, and war premium that leaves in one session can return in one headline.

What Tuesday decides is whether this tape can accept, not just visit, the top of its own map. SPY’s question is 760.40, first approach since the print. QQQ’s question is whether 702.5 holds as a floor now that the repair is technically complete. Gold’s question is the one it keeps postponing, whether 4,080 to 4,100 ever gets sat or whether the metal simply grinds higher without the retest. JOLTS at 10:00 is the day’s data risk, AMD tonight is the complex’s next exam, and everything trades in payroll’s shadow.

In the continuation path, acceptance does the work, SPY clears the high and discovers prices, QQQ builds on top of 702.5, and the squeeze graduates into a trend. In the digestion path, the ceilings hold on first approach but the floors hold too, and the tape coils at altitude while AMD and Friday load. In the fade path, the 52-week high does what untested highs often do on first touch with four green days behind them, rejects, and the ladder below gets its first real test from above.

Higher Timeframe Structure — SPY

The higher timeframe accomplished in two sessions what July spent three weeks refusing to do. The 749 to 750 band is converted, tested from above with a 748.80 session low that never threatened it, and price has escaped the entire July range. What remains overhead is singular: the 760.40 high, tagged once in June and never revisited. First approaches to untouched highs carry a specific character, the level attracts price like a magnet and then interrogates it, because everyone who has been waiting to sell the high finally gets their chance in one place. The premarket at 759.40 means the interrogation starts at the opening bell.

The HTF read: above, 760.40 is the only structure that matters, and beyond it the map is price discovery with 762 and 765 as projection references, not memory. Below, 758.58 is Monday’s high, then 757, then the 754 shelf, then 751 and the converted 749 to 750 band, the floor the entire breakout stands on. Acceptance above 760.40 ends the July range discussion permanently and makes August a discovery month. A hard rejection there with a loss of 754 begins the first genuine pullback of the recovery, which, it should be said, would be normal, four straight green sessions have earned one.

Higher Timeframe Structure — QQQ

QQQ’s higher timeframe just compressed a month of repair work into a week. The 692 to 693 band that birthed the July 23 cascade was not retested from below on Monday, it was overrun, along with Friday’s 695.77 rejection and the 698.5 shelf, and the close at 700.07 put the index back above its round number with the premarket now above the 702 to 702.5 full-repair shelf. Structurally, the correction is repaired. Practically, everything above 693 is one day old, which means the index owns a lot of altitude and very little proof. The complex remains split in a way worth respecting: Palantir up 16 percent premarket and Amazon at 3 trillion against Korean memory names falling through their own record earnings, with AMD tonight as the next tiebreaker.

The HTF read: above, 706 to 707 is the premarket zone, then 710, the drawn extension reference, with the June structure beyond. Below, 702 to 702.5 is the shelf that converts repair into base, then 700, then 698.5 to 699, then the 692 to 693 band, which has still never been tested from above, a detail that matters because untested conversions are promises, not facts. Acceptance above 702.5 through today’s session makes the V official and points the week at 710. A loss of 702.5 and 698.5 sends price back toward the band for the retest it skipped, and how that test trades would tell you more about this recovery than any of the four green days did.

Higher Timeframe Structure — Gold

Gold declined to take its exam and got promoted anyway. Monday’s map set the retest at 4,080 to 4,100; the metal never went. It drifted, held above 4,100, and sits at 4,116 this morning, firmer than it has any right to be on a day the war took a ceasefire headline and oil collapsed 6 percent. That divergence is the tell: crude’s July rally was war premium and it left like war premium, while gold’s bid survived the de-escalation because it was never only about the war. The 10-year easing from 4.747 to 4.67 did the quiet work. A metal that holds its breakout through peace headlines and a crude crash is telling you who owns it.

The HTF read: above, 4,130 is the first reference, then the 4,136 spike high, then 4,150 and the 4,190 to 4,200 July recovery high, with the 4,310 to 4,320 composite shelf as the structural prize. Below, 4,100 remains the door, 4,080 the untaken exam, then 4,040 to 4,050 and the 4,000 to 4,040 base. The bull case no longer requires the retest, but it would be stronger for having one, a dip into 4,060 to 4,080 that gets bought is the drawn path and the highest-quality setup on the board. Acceptance below 4,075 remains the invalidation that returns the metal to July’s rates cage, with payrolls holding the keys.

Thursday’s map ended the QQQ section with one sentence: a reclaim and hold after the break prints a failed breakdown at the failed breakdown, and it is violent when it does. It did. The retest held, PCE cooled, with headline falling to 3.7 from 4.1 and core at 3.3, GDP came in soft at 1.5 percent, and the most oversold tape of the year did what trapped shorts always eventually do, it bought. The Nasdaq rose 2.8 percent Thursday to end a six-day losing streak, Microsoft jumped 16 percent and added roughly 450 billion dollars of market cap in a single session, the largest one-day gain in its history, and the tech sector printed its best day since April 2025. Then Thursday night split the last two exams: Amazon surged double digits on AWS strength while Apple slid 4 percent, and Friday the Mag 7 index still rose 3.2 percent into the close. For the record books: the Kospi, halted twice on the way down last week, posted the largest one-day gain in its history on the way back, and the chip group still closed out its worst month since 2008. July did not do anything halfway.

So August opens with the geometry inverted from a week ago. SPY, which never even tested its launch zone, has run from Wednesday’s 729.10 low to a 751.05 premarket, and is now trading above the 749 to 750 band that capped every rally since mid-July. QQQ has recovered 4.3 percent off its 661.14 low and sits directly beneath the 692 to 693 band, the level it broke on July 23 and rejected on Friday’s first retest at 695.77. Gold has pulled back from its war spike to 4,108, keeping Thursday’s retest appointment at 4,080 to 4,100 while the 10-year touches 4.747 percent, its highest since January 2025. And the calendar wastes no time: ISM manufacturing at 10:00 AM EST today, Palantir tonight, AMD and JOLTS tomorrow, and the July jobs report Friday, consensus 83,000, landing on a market that prices September hike odds near 65 percent. The reclaims did their work. Now the reclaims get graded.

The Setup: The Recovery Reached the Checkpoints. Now It Pays Tolls.

The bulls have momentum, proof, and a scoreboard. The failed breakdown at the year’s most important QQQ level resolved violently upward, exactly as that pattern resolves when it works, and three sessions of forced covering have carried both indexes back to their July battlegrounds with earnings season posting its best growth in five years behind them. SPY is not approaching resistance, it opened above it: the 749 to 750 band that ended four rallies is underfoot this morning, and acceptance up here puts the index within two dollars of territory it has not seen since the 760.40 high printed. The spending rubric resolved constructively for the index’s two largest names, Microsoft and Amazon were rewarded, and the AI trade’s whole question shifted from whether the money is wasted to who spends it well. Soft GDP with resilient private demand is the goldilocks read: cool enough to argue against September, warm enough to hold earnings up.

The bears have the bond market, the band, and Friday’s deadline. The 10-year at its highest level since January 2025 is the tape’s loudest dissent: yields rose through the entire equity recovery, oil is holding near 88 with a war attached, and 65 percent September odds mean the hike that July feared merely moved, it did not leave. QQQ’s band rejected the first retest on Friday at 695.77, to the point, and every recovery level below is three days old against overhead supply that is three weeks old. Squeezes retrace when the forced buying ends, and the forced buying is mostly done: the question from here is whether real demand shows up at prices 4 percent higher than Wednesday’s. And Friday’s payrolls is binary in the worst way, a hot print confirms September and re-runs July’s rates playbook from higher, more fragile levels, while a very cold print reopens the growth scare that a 1.5 percent GDP just previewed.

What today decides is smaller than what Friday decides, and trading accordingly is the whole skill this week. Monday’s job is to grade two reclaims: SPY holding above 749 to 750, converting July’s ceiling into August’s floor, and QQQ’s second attempt at 692 to 693 after Friday’s rejection. Gold has its own appointment at 4,080 to 4,100. These are checkpoint tests inside a week whose verdict arrives at 8:30 AM Friday, which argues for respecting the levels and rationing the conviction.

In the continuation path, the band holds as support, QQQ’s second attempt gets acceptance, and the recovery extends into the payroll print with structure underneath. In the digestion path, the reclaims hold but cannot extend, and the week coils between the recovered floors and the old ceilings while the jobs number loads. In the retrace path, the band rejects SPY back inside the range, QQQ’s second attempt fails harder than the first, and the squeeze gives back its third leg with yields pressing.

Higher Timeframe Structure — SPY

SPY’s higher timeframe just did something it could not do for three weeks: it opened above the 749 to 750 band. Four rallies died there in July, the ceasefire gap, the pre-FOMC coil, and two ordinary range tests, and this morning the premarket sits at 751.05 with the band underfoot. The geometry of the whole recovery is unusually clean, Wednesday’s flush to 729.10 stopped one shelf above the launch zone, reversed without ever spending the deepest support, and retraced the entire breakdown in three sessions. That is the strongest possible version of a failed break. It is also a 22-point rally into the year’s most watched resistance with a payroll print five days out.

The HTF read: above, 752.5 is the first shelf, then 755, the July 13 high-water zone, then thin structure into the 760.40 high, the only supply that matters beyond the band. Below, 749 to 750 is the line, former ceiling auditioning as floor, then 747, Friday’s close zone, then 744 to 743.5, then 742.5, with the whole reclaimed ladder beneath. Acceptance above 750 through today’s session makes the July range a completed bottom and points the month at 760.40. Rejection back inside stamps the band’s fifth save and returns the index to the middle of a range it knows too well.

Higher Timeframe Structure — QQQ

QQQ’s recovery has reached its referendum level. The 692 to 693 band is where the July 23 breakdown began, the level whose loss started the cascade through 680, 668, and 661, and Friday’s first retest told you exactly how the market rates it: the push tagged 695.77 and was sold back below the band by the close. One rejection is respect, not verdict. The index enters Monday one good session from converting the entire correction into a V, and one bad one from printing a lower high at the scene of the original crime. Meanwhile the complex around it is split: Amazon and Microsoft repriced upward, Apple and Meta downward, chips exiting their worst month since 2008 with a UBS demand upgrade and fresh SK Hynix long-term HBM agreements as the early August counter-current.

The HTF read: above, 692 to 693 is the whole question, then 695.77, Friday’s rejection point, then 698.5 to 699, then 702 to 702.5, the July 22 shelf that frames the full repair. Below, 687.5 to 688 is the fresh shelf, then 685, then 680, Friday’s low, then the reclaimed 665 to 668 zone that started all of this, now the recovery’s foundation. Acceptance above 693 opens the repair sequence toward 699 and 702. A second rejection that loses 687.5 makes Friday’s 695.77 the recovery’s high print and hands the momentum back at the worst possible spot.

Higher Timeframe Structure — Gold

Gold is keeping its appointment. Thursday’s map said breakouts get graded on their first pullback and set the exam at 4,080 to 4,100; the metal has drifted from 4,136 to 4,108 and the test is one impulse away. The pressure source is not mysterious, the 10-year touched its highest level since January 2025 on Friday, September odds sit near 65 percent, and the rates transmission that owned this metal all July is reasserting itself against the war premium that briefly overruled it. Oil holding near 88 keeps both forces armed. This is the cleanest single-level test on the board this week, and unlike the equities, gold’s verdict does not have to wait for Friday.

The July 17 base test resolved exactly along the defense path: 3,960 never saw an accepted close below it, the reclaim of 4,002 came within days, 4,080 fell shortly after, and the recovery ran to the 4,190 area before settling. And now note carefully what the metal is doing today: rising on a ceasefire. A metal that falls 3 percent while missiles fly is a metal with exactly one driver, and it is the Fed.

The HTF read: this is the line. Yesterday’s collision resolved dovish, and it did so twice. June CPI printed a negative 0.4 percent on the month, the largest one-month decline since April 2020, with core flat and the annual core rate falling to 2.6 against a 2.9 consensus. This morning at 8:30 AM EST, June PPI followed it: negative 0.3 percent against expectations for flat, with core at 0.2 against 0.3 expected and a 12 percent drop in gasoline doing two thirds of the work on the goods side. Two inflation reports in twenty-four hours, both softer than consensus across the board. The banks delivered on top of it, JPMorgan and Wells Fargo yesterday, Morgan Stanley this morning with earnings of 3.46 per share against a 2.94 estimate on revenue of 21.35 billion against 19.64 expected.

And yet. Treasury yields are higher this morning, not lower, with the 10-year at 4.61 and the 2-year at 4.22, both up on the day despite the friendly print. Brent is holding near 85 for a third straight session of gains after a fourth consecutive night of US strikes on Iranian coastal targets, with Hormuz shut, the naval blockade reinstated, and the IRGC now threatening every other export corridor. Gold, which sprang almost 2 percent to 4,080 on the CPI print, has given nearly all of it back and sits near 4,035 as the soft PPI lands. The bond market and the metal are both saying the same thing: June’s disinflation is last month’s oil math, and July’s oil math is being written right now at 85 dollars a barrel.

That is the tension the map has to hold today. The tape wants to celebrate the prints. The premarket has SPY above yesterday’s high and QQQ pressing the band that ended last week’s rally. QQQ closed Tuesday at 719.69, up 1.12 percent, having tested the 714 shelf within 34 cents at the open and never looked back. The premarket at 724.62 has it pressing directly into the 725 to 726 band, the level that ended the rally on Friday and the last barrier between price and the June highs. The two-day round trip is complete: Monday’s memory unwind took price from 724 to 710, Tuesday and this morning took it all the way back. The unwind was a positioning flush, not a trend change. Now the original problem is back: the same band that stopped it the first time.

Below, 719.5 to 720 is the first shelf, Tuesday’s close sits at 719.69 on top of it, then 714, then 710, then the 705 July floor. Acceptance above 726 completes the breakout sequence the SKHY debut interrupted and opens 730 plus. Rejection here, third time at the same band, with a hawkish chair attached, is how the range gets another week older. Gold front-month sits near 4,035, and the sequence of the last twenty-four hours is the most honest macro read on the board. The 4,080 reclaim above remains the door to 4,100, 4,130, and 4,150, and it was tested and rejected within the last day, which makes it stronger reference, not weaker. There are maybe five mornings a year like this one. At 8:30 AM EST the June CPI prints. In the same premarket window, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citigroup all report second-quarter results. At 10:00 AM, thirty minutes into the session, Kevin Warsh sits down in front of the House Financial Services Committee for his first testimony as Fed chair, with July hike odds at a coin flip and a governor having warned just yesterday that a hot core print puts hikes back on the table. Oil is at its highest since mid-June after a third consecutive night of strikes. Gold is sitting directly on top of its June base. Everything lands at once.

This roadmap is written before the 8:30 print, and that is by design, not necessity. A prediction about the number would be worthless. A map of how price is positioned into it, where the shelves sit, and what each reaction path runs into is the only thing that survives contact with 8:30. The levels below do not care whether CPI comes in at 3.7 or 4.0. They are where the volume lives, and the number will simply pick which direction price travels through them.

One more thing before the structure, because it is the single most important piece of context for today: the headline CPI number is a trap. Consensus expects the headline to fall 0.1 percent on the month, dragging the annual rate from 4.2 down toward 3.8, the first deceleration in four months. That softness is almost entirely June gasoline, which fell roughly 10 percent, one of the largest monthly declines in a decade, because the ceasefire had reopened Hormuz and crushed crude. That ceasefire died on July 8. Brent is back near 85. The energy math that makes today’s headline look soft has already reversed and will show up going the other way in July’s data. Which means the market’s real read this morning is core, expected around 0.2 on the month and 2.8 to 2.9 on the year, and the reaction to a soft headline with a firm core could be violently different from the first algo move. Thursday resolved the question this week kept asking. The second gap into the 718 to 721 shelf did what the first one could not: it held its line and broke through. QQQ’s low printed 715.13, thirteen cents above the level Thursday’s map called the line that matters, and from that hold the index pressed through 721 and closed at 723.28, up 1.66 percent, right at the underside of the next shelf. SPY broke 748 on its third attempt of the week and closed at 751.71, inside the supply band that rejected it twice. The chip index rose more than 3 percent for a second straight session. The failed breakdown from Wednesday became the squeeze, and the squeeze reached its first destination.

Now Friday hands the tape three tests at once. The first is the retest: QQQ’s premarket at 720.40 has it sitting back on top of the shelf it just broke, which is the textbook moment where breakouts prove themselves or die. The Setup: The Retest, the Referendum, and the Weekend

The bulls have the sequence and the flows. The week’s structure has resolved upward step by step: the sweep at 700.91, the reclaim, the second gap that held 715 to the tick, the break through 721. Each level the map flagged has done its job in order, and momentum begets momentum when trapped shorts are still unwinding. The memory complex has demand receipts, not just narrative: a seven-times-oversubscribed book on the biggest foreign listing in US history, Micron and Sandisk ripping, a Commerce Secretary publicly asking for more supply, and China reportedly cracking the door open for Nvidia’s H200. A clean SKHY debut above 149 pours fuel on all of it. And the jobs-miss Fed path is still the base case until Tuesday’s CPI says otherwise.

The bears have the location, the bar, and the clock. QQQ is retesting a fresh breakout with a weekend gap ahead in a live war, and Friday afternoons before event-heavy weeks have a habit of de-risking into the close. The earnings bar has now claimed three straight beats: Samsung, PepsiCo, Delta, each printed good numbers and fell, and next week the biggest banks and the CPI print walk into the same stretched-expectations dynamic. A soft SKHY debut, breaking its 149 print in the most crowded trade in the world, would be the cleanest possible signal that the marginal AI buyer is finally full. And oil above 76 with Hormuz slowing keeps feeding the inflation math that Tuesday will price.

What today has to decide is whether the breakout survives its retest, and the tape gets an unusually honest input to decide it with: a trillion-dollar IPO opening inside the morning session. Hold the retest and absorb the debut supply, and the path to the next shelf opens into the weekend. Fail the retest, and the breakout buyers from Thursday afternoon become the newest trapped cohort. Three scenarios stay in play.

In the continuation path, the 718 to 721 retest holds as support, SKHY debuts firm, and the squeeze extends through the next shelf. In the balance path, price consolidates on top of the broken shelf, digesting the week’s violence, coiling into Tuesday. In the fade path, the retest fails, the shelf gives way, and Friday de-risking pulls price back inside the old range ahead of the weekend.

Higher Timeframe Structure — SPY

SPY closed Thursday at 751.71 after finally breaking the 748 shelf on the week’s third attempt, and the premarket at 751.79 has it parked inside the 751 to 752.5 band that rejected it Monday and Tuesday. That band is the last supply between price and the 760 highs. The structure of the week is a staircase: 740 defended, 745 reclaimed, 748 broken, and now the top of the range under the highs is the only thing left to beat.

The HTF read: above, 752 to 752.5 is the immediate ceiling, and acceptance through it opens 755, then the 760 highs, the 52-week high at 760.40. Below, 749 is first support, the breakout’s back door, then 748, then 746, then 744 and the 742.5 pocket. Hold 749 and the breakout is intact with the band under attack. Lose 749 with acceptance and the third break of 748 starts to look like the third failure, opening 746 then 744 into the weekend.

Higher Timeframe Structure — QQQ

QQQ closed Thursday at 723.28 and the premarket at 720.40 has it doing the single most information-rich thing a chart can do: retesting a fresh breakout. The 718 to 721 shelf capped Monday’s gap, capped Wednesday’s recovery, and broke Thursday. Now price is standing on it from above. If the level that was resistance all week holds as support, the breakout is confirmed and the trapped-short fuel keeps burning toward the next shelf at 724 to 725, then 730. If it fails, Thursday’s buyers are trapped and the range reasserts.

The HTF read: above, 724 to 725 is the immediate shelf, Thursday’s high at 724.23 tagged its underside, then 730, then the 735 pocket on extension. Below, 718 is the floor of the retest zone and the line that matters, then 715, Thursday’s defended low, then 711, then 707. The week’s whole sequence, sweep, reclaim, hold, break, comes down to whether 718 holds today. And the SKHY debut lands directly on this question, because the marginal buyer of that book and the marginal buyer of this shelf are the same person.

Higher Timeframe Structure — Gold

Gold front-month sits near 4,110, fading from the 4,120s, and the fade is its own message. Thursday the haven bid was waking up, gold rising alongside oil as the strikes escalated. Since then equities have decided the war is absorbable, the VIX has slipped under 17, and gold’s fear premium is leaking back out while the rates transmission waits on Tuesday’s CPI. The metal is caught in the middle of the range it carved this week, below the 4,150 reclaim, above the 4,055 spring, drifting while the two transmissions wait for new information.

The HTF read: overhead, 4,120 is the immediate reference, then 4,150, the broken shelf, then the 4,160 to 4,177 flush origin, then 4,200. Below, 4,100 is the round-number floor it keeps testing, then 4,080, then the 4,055 low, then the 3,960 to 4,000 base. The honest Friday read: gold has no catalyst of its own today, it is trading as a derivative of oil headlines and Tuesday positioning. Hold 4,100 and the recovery structure survives the weekend. Lose it with acceptance and the flush lows are back in play before CPI even prints.

A new reader asked me recently if that was just a slogan, the trading newsletter equivalent of a motivational poster with a mountain on it. Fair question. The internet is full of finance people with taglines, and most of those taglines translate roughly to “trust me, I am very smart.”

So this piece is the honest answer. It is the entire philosophy behind this publication, explained once, in full, for free. If it resonates, you will understand every map I publish from here on. If it does not, you will at least know exactly what you are not subscribing to, which is its own kind of service.

The prediction industry has a small problem

Here is a fun exercise. Go find any financial TV segment from a random Tuesday two years ago. Watch confident people in nice suits explain, with total conviction, what the market was about to do. Then check what it actually did.

The results are humbling, and not for you.

This is not because the people in the suits are stupid. Many of them are brilliant. It is because they have been assigned an impossible job. The market is an auction with millions of participants, each with different information, different time horizons, different pain thresholds, and different bosses yelling at them. Predicting its exact path is like predicting the exact shape of a crowd leaving a stadium. You can know a lot about crowds and still not know which door Dave uses.

But prediction is what sells. “The S&P will hit 8,000 by December” is a headline. “Here are three ways tomorrow could unfold and the exact price where each one is proven wrong” is homework. One of these gets you booked on television. The other one makes you money. They are rarely the same sentence.

What I do instead

Every morning before the open, I map three scenarios for SPY, QQQ, and Gold. Not one prediction. Three paths. And each path comes with three components that do all the actual work:

The trigger. What price has to do to activate the scenario. Not what I feel, not what the vibes suggest. A specific level, held or broken, with acceptance. Until the trigger fires, the scenario is just a hypothesis minding its own business.

The path. Where price is likely headed if the trigger fires, level by level, based on where the actual volume sits. Markets move between shelves of prior business the way hikers move between campsites. The path is the terrain, not a promise.

The invalidation. The most important one, and the one the prediction industry never gives you. The exact price where the scenario is wrong. Written down before the open, when I am calm, so I do not have to invent it at 10:15 AM EST when I am not.

That last one deserves a moment. An invalidation level is a pre-written confession. It says: here is precisely where my read fails, and I am telling you in advance. Notice how rarely you see that on television. There is a reason. Confessions are terrible for the personal brand and excellent for the trading account.

A worked example, from last Wednesday

Theory is cheap, so here is a real one, recent enough that you can check every detail against a chart.

Last Wednesday, July 8, was objectively a terrible morning to own stocks. The ceasefire in the Gulf had just been declared over. Oil had spiked more than 5 percent. The premarket had QQQ opening below 705, which happened to be the floor of its entire July range, the shelf that had caught every dip for weeks.

The prediction business had one job that morning: pick a direction. Down felt obvious. War, oil, breakdown. Sell.

The preparation business had a different job: map the fork. The morning’s roadmap said, in plain terms, that opening below the range floor forces an immediate verdict, and both outcomes were tradeable. A reclaim of 705 would be a failed breakdown, one of the strongest long setups that exists, because every seller who pressed the lows would be trapped underneath. A rejection of 705 would open an air pocket toward 690. Two scenarios, two triggers, one level doing all the deciding. The map’s exact phrasing was that the one thing this open could not be is ambiguous.

What happened next was the fun part. QQQ flushed to 700.91, swept the lows, turned around, reclaimed the floor, and closed green. On a day the Dow lost 576 points. On a day the United States struck 90 targets in Iran. The growth index finished positive because the trapped sellers became the fuel, exactly the mechanics the failed-breakdown scenario described.

Now, the honest part, because this is where I am supposed to tell you I knew it would happen. I did not know. That is the whole point. If price had rejected 705 instead, the map had a path for that too, and the invalidation on the long idea would have kept anyone following it out of trouble. I did not predict the reversal. I prepared for the fork, and the market chose a tine.

The difference sounds small. Over a hundred trading days, it is everything.

Why your brain hates this

Preparation has a marketing problem, and the problem is your amygdala.

Humans are prediction machines. We evolved to commit to a story fast, because the ancestors who stood around weighing three scenarios about the rustling bush got eaten by the scenario with teeth. Certainty feels like safety. Ambiguity feels like weakness.

The market exploits this ruthlessly. When you predict, you marry the outcome. Every tick against you becomes a personal insult, and you start negotiating with the chart the way people negotiate with parking meters. Just five more minutes. It will come back. It knows I am here.

When you prepare, the relationship changes. A trade that hits its invalidation is not a betrayal, it is a scenario resolving. You wrote the exit before you entered. Nothing about being wrong is surprising, because being wrong was one of the three maps in your hand the whole time. You take the loss the way you take a toll booth. Annoying, priced in, and the road keeps going.

I will not pretend I learned this from a book, although the books help. I learned it the way most traders learn it, by donating money to the market during the years I thought I was in the prediction business. The tuition was not tax-deductible.

What this looks like every morning

So here is the actual product of this philosophy, published before the open every trading day.

A macro read that is verified, not vibes. Every number in the roadmap is sourced and checked, because a map drawn on bad terrain data gets people lost. Then, for SPY, QQQ, and Gold: the higher timeframe structure, the intermediate levels where the volume actually sits, and three scenarios each, with the trigger, the path, and the invalidation spelled out to the dollar. It closes with one decisive level per instrument, the single line in the sand that tells you which scenario is live.

Then the market opens and does whatever it wants, which is its right. Some days it picks the first scenario in the first half hour. Some days it picks the second and stays there until lunch out of what I can only assume is spite. The map does not care. The map’s job is to make sure that whichever door the crowd takes, you already knew where it leads and where it fails.

That is the whole business. No predictions, no mountains on posters, no pretending the rustling bush is definitely a rabbit.

The part where I tell you what this costs

Yesterday should not have ended the way it did. The President declared the ceasefire with Iran over at the NATO summit, the US launched strikes on 90 Iranian targets, Iran retaliated against US-allied countries in the region, oil jumped more than 5 percent, and the Dow fell 576 points with an intraday hole of more than 855. That is a risk-off script. And yet the Nasdaq, down more than 290 at its low, ground all the way back and closed positive. QQQ swept the 700.91 low, reclaimed its broken floor, and finished green at 711.44 while everything around it bled.

Wednesday’s map called that exact spot. The failed breakdown at the range floor was flagged as the best setup on the board, and it delivered to the letter: the flush below 705, the reclaim, the squeeze. Sellers who pressed the overnight lows got trapped, and the afternoon paid the patient.

Now the question gets harder. The premarket has QQQ at 719, gapping up more than a percent directly into the 718 to 721 shelf, the exact zone that rejected Monday’s gap and started this whole leg down. Same movie, four days later. The difference this time is what sits underneath: a swept low, trapped shorts, a memory complex catching fire again with Micron up 5 percent premarket and SK Hynix’s US offering running roughly seven times oversubscribed, and a retail sentiment survey that just washed out. The similarity is the part that keeps you honest: it is still a gap into heavy overhead volume, and there is still a war on.

The Setup: Same Gap, Different Fuel

The bulls have the reversal and the flows. Wednesday was as hostile a headline day as this tape has faced all summer, and the growth index closed green while sweeping its lows first, which is how durable bottoms tend to print. The failed breakdown trapped sellers below 705, the AI trade is bidding for a second day, and the memory complex just got three separate demand signals in 24 hours: an SK Hynix book running seven times oversubscribed, Bain cashing out of Kioxia at record returns, and Micron leading the premarket. Sentiment already washed out, the AAII spread recovering from deeply negative. And the rotation that punished chips for a week means there is sidelined money underneath, not leveraged money overhead.

The bears have the location and the war. This is the second gap into the 718 to 721 shelf in four days, and the first one died there. Overhead volume does not care about your narrative, it is simply where trapped longs from last week want their money back. The war is not priced as a war: the US struck 90 targets and Iran retaliated, and equities are treating it as background noise, which works until a headline lands that cannot be ignored. Oil at 79 Brent keeps rebuilding the inflation math, the minutes just revealed a committee where some members wanted to hike a month ago, and PepsiCo confirmed the earnings-bar problem on day one of the season: in-line-to-better numbers, red stock. And CPI, Warsh under oath, and the banks all land Tuesday.

What today has to decide is whether the second test of the shelf resolves differently than the first. Gaps into the same level twice in a week usually go one of two ways: the second attempt breaks through because the first absorbed the supply, or the double rejection confirms the ceiling and the range hardens. The claims print at 8:30 and the headline tape out of the Gulf will pick the path, and your window opens right as that verdict forms. Three scenarios stay in play.

In the continuation path, the gap holds its first support, the shelf breaks on the second attempt, and the squeeze extends. In the balance path, the gap stalls at the shelf and price coils between it and first support, digesting two violent days. In the fade path, the second gap dies where the first one did, and the round trip back toward the reclaimed floor begins.

Higher Timeframe Structure — SPY

SPY closed Wednesday at 745.40 after an ugly-then-orderly session: a morning flush to 739.51 that tested the 740 shelf almost to the tick, then a steady afternoon recovery back to the 745 to 746 zone. The premarket at 747.92 has it pressing the 748 shelf, the underside of the supply band that has capped every attempt this month. The structure is a market that keeps refusing to break down and keeps failing to break out, compressing between 740 and 751.

The HTF read: above, 748 is the immediate test, then 749 to 751, the two-rejection zone from Monday and Tuesday, then 752.5, then the 760 highs. Below, 745 to 746 is first support, then 744, then 742.5, then the 740 shelf that held Wednesday’s flush, then 736 and the 728 to 730 launch floor. Hold 745 and the compression keeps pointing at an upside resolution of the 748 to 751 band. Lose 745 with acceptance and Wednesday’s recovery starts unwinding toward 742.5 then 740.

Higher Timeframe Structure — QQQ

QQQ closed Wednesday at 711.44 after the sweep and reclaim, and the premarket at 719 has it gapping straight back into the 718 to 721 shelf. This is the index writing the whole story. In four sessions it has: failed a gap at this shelf, broken its floor, swept the lows to 700.91, reversed to close green on a war day, and now returned to the scene of Monday’s failure. The chart is asking one question: was the sweep the bottom of this leg, or was it a bounce inside a broader distribution.

The HTF read: above, 718 to 721 is the decision zone, then the 724 to 725 shelf, then 730. Below, 714 to 715 is first support, the mid shelf, then 711, then 707, then the 703 to 705 floor, then the 700.91 swept low. The failed breakdown gives the bulls the benefit of the doubt as long as 715 holds, because the trapped-seller fuel is real. A hold above 715 that then breaks 721 turns the compression into a squeeze toward 724. A rejection at the shelf that loses 715 says Monday’s sellers are still in control, and the gap fill toward 711 then 707 is on.

Higher Timeframe Structure — Gold

Gold front-month sits near 4,120, up about 0.8 percent, recovering roughly half of Tuesday night’s flush. And the driver flipped, which is the tell worth writing down. Tuesday night gold fell triple digits while tankers burned, because the transmission ran through oil into yields, pure rates trade. Today gold is rising while oil rises, with strikes on 90 targets and retaliation across the region. The haven bid is waking up. When the same headline that crushed gold two days ago starts lifting it, the market is telling you the fear transmission is beginning to compete with the rates transmission.

The HTF read: gold is caught between those two forces, and the levels mark the battlefield. Overhead, 4,150 is the broken shelf and first reclaim, then the 4,160 to 4,177 zone where Tuesday’s flush began, then 4,200, then the 4,240 to 4,270 band. Below, 4,100 is the floor that matters, the round number it just reclaimed, then 4,080, then the 4,055 flush low, then the 3,960 to 4,000 base. Hold 4,100 and the recovery has structure, with 4,150 the test that confirms the haven bid is real. Lose 4,100 and the rates trade is back in charge, reopening the flush lows.

The tape just taught an expensive lesson. Monday the AI trade bounced hard, the Nasdaq led, and the Dow closed just shy of 53,000 at another record. It looked like last week’s chip damage had been absorbed. Then Samsung reported a record second quarter Tuesday morning, the kind of print that should have been a victory lap for the entire memory complex, and the stock fell 6 percent. It dragged the semiconductor group down more than 3 percent, Micron lost 4.7, and a report that China’s DeepSeek is building its own AI chip cut at the moat narrative underneath all of it. When record numbers get sold, the numbers were never the question. The bar was.

And here is the part that makes today’s map interesting: while chips bled, most S&P 500 names actually rose. The Dow tagged a fresh intraday record before fading to a small loss. This is not a market leaving equities. It is a market leaving the crowded corner of equities, and that split between SPY and QQQ is now the widest it has been all month.

Then oil lit the second fuse. The Treasury revoked the license permitting Iranian oil sales and Iranian forces fired on commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, pushing the threat level for shipping to severe. Brent jumped above 76, WTI above 72, both up more than 5 percent in a session. That reignited the inflation math the market had just spent a week unwinding, the 10-year pushed back toward 4.5 percent, and September hike odds climbed back above 50. Gold, the supposed safe haven, fell triple digits overnight on a war headline, from near 4,177 through 4,100 to print near 4,055 before stabilizing around 4,080. Sit with that one, because it is the cleanest macro tell on the board.

The premarket has SPY at 743.24, below yesterday’s low. QQQ at 703.70, below yesterday’s low and below the shelf that has floored every dip this month. And the June FOMC minutes, the first of the Warsh era, land at 2:00 PM EST.

The Setup: The Bar Is the Risk, and the Minutes Are the Verdict

The bulls have the rotation and the reset. Money is demonstrably not leaving this market, the Dow printed another record intraday while chips got hit, and breadth held up on a day the headline indexes bled. The jobs miss already did its work on the Fed path, a July hold is still priced near 75 percent, and the last oil spike in June faded within weeks once Hormuz flows recovered. QQQ opening below its range floor is exactly the setup that produces violent squeezes when the breakdown fails, because every seller pressing the overnight lows is trapped the moment 705 reclaims. And Samsung down 6 on record results is as much about one name’s stretched positioning as it is about the sector.

The bears have the bar and the transmission. A record quarter got sold, and earnings season is just starting with expectations stretched and the index roughly a thousand S&P points higher than it was into the Q1 reports. Good is no longer good enough, and there are a dozen more chip and mega-cap prints between here and August. The DeepSeek report gives the moat question a second wind. Oil up 5 percent rewires the inflation math in a single session, yields are back at 4.5, hike odds are climbing again, and the New York Fed’s own survey shows inflation expectations rising. Gold falling on a Gulf escalation confirms the regime: rates are running everything, and rates are moving the wrong way. Below QQQ’s floor there is thin volume until 690.

What today has to decide is whether the range floor holds the third test in a week, and the honest answer is that the morning probably will not decide it alone. The minutes at 2:00 PM EST are the verdict, the first look inside a committee whose Chair withheld his own projection, with the market walking in already repricing hawkish. The morning session is positioning ahead of that, which makes the levels everything and the middle of the range nothing. Three scenarios stay in play.

In the recovery path, the overnight flush gets bought at the open, QQQ reclaims its floor, and the failed breakdown squeezes the trapped sellers. In the balance path, price coils near the lows through the morning, neither side committing before 2:00 PM, and the minutes pick the direction. In the continuation path, the floor rejects, the round numbers give way, and the unwind runs the air pocket below with the minutes as the accelerant.

Higher Timeframe Structure — SPY

SPY closed Tuesday at 747.71 after running to 750.96, tagging the underside of the 751 to 752.5 supply band, and getting rejected. The premarket at 743.24 has it below Tuesday’s 745.21 low and back inside the 740 to 745 pocket where the composite holds its heaviest volume. Two pushes at the top of the range in two sessions, two rejections, and now an open below the prior day’s low. The rotation bid keeps the structure healthier than the tape feels, but the burden of proof just moved to the buyers.

The HTF read: above, 744 to 745 is the first reclaim, the underside of the broken pocket, then 746 to 748, then the 749 to 751 rejection zone, then 752.5, then the 760 highs. Below, 742 is first support, then the 740 round number, then 736, then the 728 to 730 shelf that launched the entire late-June recovery. As long as SPY holds 740 on a closing basis, this is rotation inside the upper range, uncomfortable but intact. Lose 740 with acceptance and the tape starts pricing the full round-trip, 736 first, then the launch floor.

Higher Timeframe Structure — QQQ

QQQ closed Tuesday at 709.43, down 1.85 percent against SPY’s 0.48, and the premarket at 703.70 has it below Tuesday’s 704.90 low and below the 705 shelf that has held every test this month. This is the index carrying all of the pain, and it is opening in the one spot that forces an immediate verdict. Monday’s map said 715 was the line that told you whether the gap was real. It broke Tuesday morning and the fade path ran to the letter, through 712, through the old lows, and now under the floor.

The HTF read: 705 is the decision, and today it works in reverse because price is opening beneath it. Above, 705 is the reclaim, then 709 to 710, then the 714 to 715 shelf, then 720 to 721. Below, 700 is the round number, then 695 in the air pocket, then the 690 to 691 shelf on the weekly composite, the last real volume ledge before the June base. A reclaimed 705 that holds is a failed breakdown at a range floor, and those are among the strongest long setups in the book because the fuel is trapped positioning, not news. Acceptance below 700 says the unwind has a second leg and thin volume to travel through.

Higher Timeframe Structure — Gold

Gold front-month sits near 4,080 after one of the sharpest overnight reversals in weeks, from roughly 4,177 Tuesday evening through 4,100 to a print near 4,055 before stabilizing. Read the driver carefully, because it is the most honest signal in the entire market right now. Tankers came under fire in the Gulf, the threat level went to severe, and the safe-haven asset fell triple digits. That is only possible in a market where the transmission runs through oil into inflation into the Fed into real yields, with gold trading the last step in the chain instead of the first. Gold is a rates instrument wearing a safe-haven costume, and it just proved it overnight.

The HTF read: the entire post-payrolls recovery is gone and price is back at the top of the base it broke out from last week. Overhead, 4,100 is the first reclaim, then the broken 4,150 shelf, then 4,200, then the 4,240 to 4,270 band. Below, 4,050 is the overnight floor, then the 4,000 round number, then the 3,960 to 4,000 base that held the June lows, the structure everything leans on. A hawkish read on the 2:00 PM minutes presses the 4,000 test. A softer-than-feared read and this overnight flush starts to look like a spring, because the selling was rates repricing, not liquidation.

Mon · The gap. Futures reopen with a bid, NQ leading at plus 1 percent as Samsung’s third straight memory price hike puts the AI hardware trade back in the center of the frame. Today the gap has to prove it holds.

The Setup: Prove the Gap on the First Day of the Half

Two forces are pulling the same way this morning, and for once they agree.

The first is the jobs number, and it is already known. June nonfarm payrolls landed at 57,000 against a forecast near 110,000, the softest print in four months. That did one thing to a hawkish Fed narrative that had been bracing for Warsh to stay mean. It took the air out of it. Odds of a September hike fell to roughly 50 percent from about 66 percent, and the dollar just booked its worst week since April. This is the key difference from the last edition. Two weeks ago the market was trading into the jobs print. Today it is trading out of it, with the softer Fed path already on the board.

The second is memory. Samsung is pushing a third straight quarterly price increase on DRAM and LPDDR, targeting north of 20 percent for Q3 after roughly 90 percent in Q1 and 50 to 60 percent in Q2. Kospi slipped overnight on the news, which reads backward until you sit with it. This is the exact misread that ran through June. Higher memory prices get filed under demand destruction when the tape is nervous, and under scarcity confirmed when the tape is not. Right now, with SK Hynix bringing a roughly 29 billion dollar US listing and Samsung earnings on deck tomorrow, the AI hardware trade is back in the center of the frame, and NQ futures leading the complex by a full point tells you which way the read is leaning this morning.

Put those together and you get a risk-on open with a real fundamental spine, not a holiday drift. But here is the tension, and it is worth being honest about. Every one of these instruments is gapping directly into a level that matters. SPY into the 748 to 750 supply that capped June. QQQ into the 720 to 721 shelf where the heaviest overhead volume sits. Gold into last week’s highs. The direction is not the hard part today. The question is whether price has already paid for the good news, and that is what the levels are for.

The calendar gives the first test fast. ISM Services PMI lands at 10:00 AM EST, consensus around 54, thirty minutes into the session, and it can reprice the front end in a hurry if it surprises. Fed’s Waller speaks at 3:00 PM EST. The heavier catalysts sit midweek: ADP and the June FOMC minutes Wednesday, jobless claims Thursday, then CPI on the 14th. So the structure says risk-on. The gap and the level it opens into say prove it.

Three scenarios stay in play for each instrument. In the continuation path, the gap holds its level and the trend presses into the overhead. In the balance path, the gap stalls right at resistance and price rotates sideways, digesting the move while the tape waits on ISM and the midweek data. In the fade path, the gap fails, the level gives way, and price rotates back toward where it launched as the good news gets sold.

SPY closed Thursday at 744.78 after rejecting the 750 to 751 shelf through late June and rotating back into the 740 to 745 pocket where the bulk of recent volume sits. The composite still has its heaviest acceptance right around where price is trading, so the premarket at 748 has it pressing the top of that value area from beneath. This is not a breakout open. It is a value-area open into supply.

The HTF read: above 748, the path runs into 750 to 752 supply, then the 760 failed highs, then the 52-week high at 760.40. Below, 744 to 745 is first support, the reclaimed pocket, then 740, then the 731 to 732 shelf that held in mid-June. As long as SPY holds above 744 on a closing basis, the gap is intact and the structure points at a retest of the 750 to 751 shelf. Lose 744 and the move starts to look like a good-news pop that is giving back, opening 740 then the deeper 731 to 732 base.

Higher Timeframe Structure — QQQ

QQQ closed Thursday at 712.60, and this is where the memory story lives. It sold hard off the 730 shelf on July 2 down into the 707 to 710 pocket, and the premarket at 721 has it gapping back up more than a full percent, directly into the 720 to 721 area where the heaviest overhead volume sits. So the gap walks price straight into the first real test, and QQQ’s behavior at that level tells you whether the market is reading Samsung as scarcity or as destruction today.

The HTF read: above 721, the path opens toward the 725 pocket, then the 730 level that marked the July 2 breakdown, then the 748.65 52-week high far above. Below, 715 to 716 is first support, then the 710 to 712 pocket, then the July 2 lows near 707. A hold above 715 keeps the gap valid and the AI trade leading. A slip back below 715 says the gap is filling and the leadership that drove the premarket cannot hold it.

Higher Timeframe Structure — Gold

Gold front-month is trading roughly 4,155 to 4,190, holding most of last week’s 2 percent gain. The metal had a clean week for a clean reason. The same soft jobs print that lifted equities lifted gold, because a Fed less likely to hike lowers the cost of holding a non-yielding asset, and the weak dollar added a tailwind. But the picture is two-sided, and that is the honest read. Oil sliding toward 70 on the Strait of Hormuz recovery and OPEC+ supply eases the inflation impulse, and gold leans on inflation fear for part of its bid. So gold sits caught between a dovish rates tailwind and a fading inflation-hedge case.

The HTF read: gold is trying to extend last week’s recovery off the 4,100 base. Overhead, 4,190 is the immediate test, then last week’s 4,200 high, then the 4,300 shelf far above. Below, 4,150 is the first shelf, then 4,100, then the 4,040 area it based on before the bounce. Gold’s macro tell has turned from bearish to two-sided: the dovish repricing gave it a real bid for the first time in weeks, but the fading oil and inflation story caps it. The one thing that extends it is the dovish path holding, and the midweek FOMC minutes are the next test of that, which makes gold the cleanest rate-cut proxy on the board.
