This past week has been a whirlwind of emotions on TikTok following the murder-suicide of Sarah Gilson and her soon-to-be ex-husband, Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, who was known as “Duff Daddy” on the app, and the self-harm livestream of a nude Perez Hilton that was viewed by thousands and restreamed by probably millions.

The app watched horrified as the event played out, and viewers used the app’s reporting feature to no avail. Many reported getting back “No Violations Found” feedback on their reports.

If you have ever pushed the LIVE button on TikTok, you will know that there are a plethora of words you cannot say, topics that are taboo, and street rules for the app. Mass reporting an individual is one of the ways to take a creator’s LIVE access away, often by a competitor. The ease with which an average creator on the app can be banned by their opposition reporting their LIVE, often falsely, in order to gain control is a well-known tactic.

It begs the question: What exactly happened that night that TikTok chose not to take his LIVE down for over 30 minutes?

TikTok disputes the 30-minute timeframe, but the screen recordings that viewers claim to hold appear to tell a different tale. TikTok has stated that its systems detected the livestream within minutes, but that a moderator error delayed its removal. The exact length of time the livestream remained accessible is disputed, with viewers pointing to screen recordings that they say show it remained available longer.

Hilton’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, made this statement to USA Today, which reflects what many are also struggling with: “While it is certainly a time for kindness and compassion, I am personally having trouble understanding how TikTok could have allowed a person suffering from an obvious violent mental health crisis to continue to stream live.”

The app is prone to troll farms, which were an issue during the last election from Russia. The creators have figured out how to game the system and manipulate drama in their favor because they know that advertisers pay for one thing: our engagement. What kept that LIVE up was the number of viewers combined with the comments moving in the chat and the shares. The engagement of that LIVE probably made the app a lot of money from its advertising revenue.

The gifts that fly during “battles,” where influencers holler insults at one another and beg their chat to send enormous gifts with no return on the investment, add up to income that many could only dream of. However, it is not the main source of revenue for TikTok, despite how it may appear from the outside.

There is one important rule to remember when you are utilizing social media:

“If you are not paying for the product, you ARE the product.”

Advertising is the main source of revenue for these social media platforms. They operate identically to a casino, only your emotions are at play.

These are the individuals our children, grandchildren, and peers are looking up to. Ones who portray a life through a lens that is heavily filtered, unrealistic, and heavily coveted. There are no returns on the funds that are being depleted from bank accounts in an effort to be seen and recognized. Just “entertainment” of vile and foul behavior.

Energy will flow where your attention is focused. If you are only surrounded by negativity, you begin to absorb that energy, and it will change your whole mood. The changes in the attitudes and behaviors of citizens in society can be directly related to the influence social media has in our everyday lives.

If you were part of the generations that grew up with malls, arcades, and roller rinks, you will fondly remember in-person socialization. The vibe we have in society now feels completely foreign to those from that demographic.

The pseudo-reality world that the current generation has manifested to escape the reality of the consequences of human actions is the most unrealistic world that could possibly exist. It is one of moving goalposts, canceling words that are now deemed unpalatable as if it will change the meaning, and mob mentalities.

Cancel culture has taken over social media. If you dare to disagree with the masses, your entire life is at risk of being upended, all the way down to your childhood teachers. Although that last statement sounds extreme, it is the sad reality many face for leaving a comment on a popular video.

Which has led to the fallout from the current incident with Perez Hilton: It has divided the internet. There is the previously mentioned generation that remembers a version of Perez that was less than glamorous. His actions and choice of words were beyond shocking to many. There are many in the newer generations who look at him through an inexperienced lens and have drastically different opinions.

While in the process of writing this article, it came to my attention that another TikToker named Mina, a K-pop influencer, was bullied so badly that she took her own life online. The offense Mina committed, according to the crowd? Bringing flowers to a boy-band concert. When she apologized as the chat wanted, they doubled down on their harassment.

Why did the Chinese create an app that they don’t allow their own citizens to utilize? One has to wonder.

Many do not realize how much China owns on our own soil. They gave us an app that is distracting every citizen across the world who has access to it. It can be used to push propaganda in large amounts in a nanosecond. It was used as a weapon in the past, and it will continue to be used in that manner.

The only answer we have is to educate others. Learn to recognize these patterns and snap out of the glitz and glamour of pseudo-Hollywood and see this game for what it really is: a way to control a lot of people with minimal effort.

We give up our funds, sanity, and even lives for the attention that is sought after on social media. These false deities with filters are now in control of human behavior. We’ll have to wait for them to write the new classroom books used to instruct children coming into this new world, as they are too busy on LIVE begging for your attention.

Many of us sit and wonder to ourselves: Is this rage bait or reality? One cannot really believe that the world operates in the manner they depict on social media, can they?

The coddled American minds feel that this is a topic that should not be discussed, that Perez’s privacy should be respected even though the object of the request is not known for reciprocating the same kindness, and that anyone violating these unwritten rules should be harassed en masse. If we cannot behave as a mob harassing people in real life without facing arrest, then it would make sense that it should not be tolerated online.

Which leads to my final point: What do we do?

First, we need to come to terms with the word duality. This means that two things can be true at the same time. Someone CAN be a good person, and you CAN still not like them.

Society has begun to use an all-or-nothing approach to how they view a topic. If I don’t agree, it must be bad and canceled, exterminated, eradicated at all costs. That seems a bit extreme when many of these “topics” are humans who have committed no crimes other than to offend an individual’s senses.

Social media has become the judge, jury, and executioner of perceived crimes against humanity. Individuals like Sam Kinison, George Carlin, and early Eddie Murphy comedy would send these people into a downward spiral.

The people busy in their real lives, the ones too busy to even participate in social media frequently enough to notice, are oblivious to this alternative reality world. Oblivious until an average citizen offends an individual who thinks social media is where you handle real-world conflict.

The whirlwind effect of mob mentality takes on a life of its own from one viral video, from a 60-second snapshot in time. Businesses crushed, public images destroyed over false statements, divorces, children removed by CPS, prison—the list goes on and on.

The common denominator is social media and mob mentality.

We must demand change. This behavior is spilling over into our real-world lives, and citizens are walking around like cast members of Idiocracy. Demanding changes from our local and state lawmakers is where the change starts. It won’t start at the federal level. Change starts in our backyards.

The number of people seeking validation from internet influencers is sky-rocketing across the globe. As a member of Gen-X, I have had the opportunity to watch how society has transformed since the release of the internet to the general public. Chat rooms on AOL, Yahoo and ICQ where the common question was A/S/L and we were freely giving out information to strangers online. The rise of the Nigerian Prince scams has given way to a new breed of scammers, ones with fake personalities who are preying on emotions, money and draining people’s self-worth for content. Yet, we continue to fall for these stories again and again. The only question I keep asking myself is, “Why?”.

I have had numerous discussions with humans and AI regarding the topic. Human behavior is baffling to my brain. I just cannot process repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a different result. At some point, we have to recognize the problem and make changes. We are a society of victims now. You cannot read a headline without it screaming about a “victim” of a crime, injustice, or narrative. We are a society of people needing safe places instead of speaking up for what is right in fear of pushback from a mob of people.

What I have witnessed over the past 3 1/2 years is heinous. In retrospect, the best thing would have been to continue saying “no” to the friend who was putting the pressure on me to help her. I had reservations but, I am an empath and she knew the buttons to push. My initial response should have never waivered. That’s where I went wrong, but the lessons learned were important.

The social media world has turned into an emotional storm where these “influencers” compete for your attention and money. They get you to do their dirty work with just a few key phrases and a sudden mob is formed in an instant. These folks are commonly addicted to various drugs but the one addiction they often overlook, is to that of social media. It seems the current lawsuit against the social media giants just does not register with the audience or the influencers. Please scroll to the bottom for the links and explanations of these lawsuits. If you have been affected, there are ways to claim compensation from these lawsuits.

These platforms were designed to attract and keep you engaged for a reason. They are paid by advertising revenue. The longer the user is engaged, the more the app is paid. That is why these platforms don’t like you to promote your other social media accounts. They do not want to lose those funds. Influencers are turned into little multi-level marketers who get paid more based on what they sell and the engagement they bring to the table. There is a large detriment to this method of marketing, it encourages negative behaviors for profit. Only, the general public is blissfully unaware of just how negative until they stumble into one of the messiest social media storms they could have never imagined.

In one opinionated second, leaving a single comment that makes one of these “influencers” upset, ones entire life, family, job, friends and dead relatives can make a sudden appearance as content. If that happens to an adult, people tell you to turn it off. Delete the app. That doesn’t stop the harassment however. This type of manipulative system attracts some of the lowest dregs that society has to offer. A dark underworld lies below the surface of happy pet videos, travel, cooking and funny relationship antics. They have discovered how to manipulate your emotions while maximizing their income. They generate drama with other influencers to rally their mobs against one another to sling hateful diatribe in what are called “battles” where chat members throw “gifts” at these influencers that equate to money.

Many of these chat members have lost houses, marriages, jobs and have even went to prison because of a need to be accepted by these influencers and commiting financial crimes in order to keep up with the cost of gifting these influencers. Some of them have committed suicide (ironically TikTok guidelines do not allow you to say that word, rather preferring “unalived”). You are judged of worthiness by your gifter badge instead of the qualities that real, cherished friendships generally are based on. I cannot wrap my mind around this ideology at all and I am pulled back to when my ex-husband wrote in his journal during his PTSD treatment that he was in a world he no longer recognized. The military isn’t the same. Leadership isn’t the same. I can really relate to that sentiment, as I am in a world I no longer recognize either. He isn’t crazy. I hope he knows that.

I have managed to find my peace along the way by discovering Hinduism, digging into the universe and questions beyond most people’s line of thinking. I am used to being the “outsider” and do not consider it a negative statement. I just refuse to accept the negativity that others who do not understand me try to force upon me. It isn’t “strength”. It’s my inability to comprehend stupid statements that do not make logical sense. It’s along the lines of trying to convince someone that 2+2=5. That’s the equation that my frontal lobe rejects. Constructive criticism and hate are two entirely different concepts that people have turned into synonomous activities.

I have the ability to do what many people who utliize social media do not, put it down. Turn it off. None of my notifications have been on since I set foot in Alaska in October of 2021. I adopted the Alaskan way of tuning out news headlines, gossip and paying attention to what was happening in the community directly around me. I enjoy helping others and before I was introduced to TikTok, that is what my platforms were about and it’s time to get back to it. After COVID, I interviewed TikTok’s most-hated widow, Jesse Juarage and it has been 5 years and I would like to check back in on her and her family.

Over the years, I have heard the struggles of many while battling hospital ethics committees, medical gaslighting, insurance companies, financial devestation and countless other wars on the healthcare battlefield. After all of this nonsense the last three years and wasting my efforts on people who aren’t looking to change their addictive behaviors, it’s time to get back to work on who and what really matter, the people who have been there supporting me and my efforts from the jump. I have no desire to fit into a world that requires me to beg and to manipulate for profit in order to fit in. Miss me with that. I am currently deleting the entire YouTube catalog I have for TikTok so that I can turn my monetization back on and get back to what I do.

I cannot fathom living a life that revolves around social media circles anymore. I needed that dopamine reset like a heroin junkie needs their hit. Nature is my adrenaline. That halibut my son caught tasted sooooo delicious tonight for dinner and I want so many more nights of smiles like that. I forsee a move towards water bodies in my near future. The Kenai was so much like home that it was a comfort to my soul with the cold weather I love so dearly. One person’s dream is another person’s nightmare. I don’t enjoy hot weather. I don’t enjoy sweating. Why should I to make another person happy? It’s my happiness and that of those around me that I care about. Those who focus on my happiness should go in search of their own.

The relief has been amazing and nothing truly was lost in my decision. There will be nothing left for me to bring back to the table this time. They’re Going Hungry, go eat at another table. I have life to return to and I am not a puppet for social media content.

There is a behavior on social media that influencers use in order to minimize a person's credibility; spinning a narrative so horrific about an individual that the crowd instinctively wants to attack, even if they were not present for the initial conflict. A persons clean background suddenly turns into a conspiracy theory that is sold to internet audiences for likes, views and gifts. The need to be validated by internet audiences is our next epidemic.

Internet clout and big-mouthed, hate-spewing overtalkers have suddenly replaced critical thinking, fact-finding and old-fashioned research. There is no longer such a thing as healthy debate or dialogue on social media. The dissenters choose to troll the audience, spread hate and push a narrative opposite of the conversation. That is what is taken as proof and evidence in the parasocial world. Credibility is looked at by follower numbers, not by credentials. Credentials and credibility go hand in hand, everywhere but on the internet.

I have had my personal life, my background and my childhood rewritten for Tik Tok by people who don’t even know me. They pull up old information out of context, out of perspective, and from a place they don’t even understand to sway an audience. Unpleasant images of their targets are shared on a green screen in an effort to intimidate and harass their victims. Clipped videos are presented to an audience where only a fraction of the story is told. Never hearing what an opposer did, only what the target did. This causes reactive violence, reactive abuse or a trauma response.

Then, your response is used against you when they don’t get the one they were looking for. If you are calm and collected, suddenly you are uncaring. If you defend yourself, they use more of your words against you to keep it going. The best response is no response and to just keep it moving.

My natural curiosity and inquisitive nature is often perceived by these high-conflict characters as “shady”. Because I choose to question everything. I began to delve into Hinduism after my separation and divorce, and I have learned to look at things through a different lens. Moral compasses, ethics and values vary by person. I don’t know when we began to view everyone with a different line of thinking as “wrong”. I know in the classes I took in high school and college we were taught true debate. These influencers don’t debate. They yell at you until they hear their words come from your mouth or until you just leave and they tell their crowds you’re “afraid of the truth”.

The denial in the parasocial reality world is next level delusional. They will rewrite anything that doesn’t follow their narrative. It’s like these folks have found a way to live IN the video games they have become addicted to. No empathy for others. Complete inability to sympathize with others. It is much easier how to tell someone to behave in the perfect world that these characters choose not to participate in.

How did these defects from reality come to that conclusion? If you refuse to live in the real world, don’t dabble over here in real-life then run to social media and cry about what people are like out here. Either start dealing with the discomfort that the real world causes you and learn to get along with humans again or stay in your safe zones. The black or white thinking only comes into play when these high-conflict characters can’t come up with a logical answer.

I will never answer to anyone in a full-time commitment to hating me. Nothing I ever do will make them happy so it’s best to do what makes me happy. The haters will rewrite my intent and that’s ok. Those who know me, love me.

I have had long conversations with my chat as to what they enjoy the most from my content and I am working with that feedback to come up with a show where all of the things that I cover can sensibly be done in one show. I am spread thin with all of the topics that I cover. I am on multiple platforms and I am looking to reduce the demand that those have on my free time while still enjoying the activity.

When things begin to feel like work, my mind checks out. I don’t want this to be work. I want it to be a place to unwind, reconnect with one another and relax. True entertainment. TikTok has become draining to the mind, one’s income and is robbing people of their free time. I would like to come up with a structured routine so that I am not on live all the time either and I can reconnect with my life. A dopamine detox is in order and we all need to start sourcing it from different locations. Social media and electronics are not it.

Everyone misses the fun that the app used to bring. The laughter, the games that don’t involve people being played against one another. I would like to bring that back to my platform again. The educational ranting. Saying what everyone in America is thinking while also coming up with solutions that will help fix the problems. My moral compass spins towards that of right and wrong because of how I was raised. I have done a lot of self-reflection during my experience of the emotional casino. Many of us get the same rush while scrolling social media. Instead of page-turning, it becomes fast scrolling to the next emotional twist. Seeking that next rush of excitement. TikTok is boring to me anymore. It’s the same type of videos, the same attention-seeking behaviors and the constant begging for money. I have decided to utilize that library card and at the very least get back to reading instead of listening. I may still be doing it on an electronic device (not my preference, but more out of convenience) but I will be more actively engaged in the material.

This here is going to be the next book I read in an effort to try to understand why so many people in active addiction and those who claim sobriety, wind up gravitating to the engagement of TikTok and why they find it so hard to break free. I am not an “addict” in the sense of the word that is commonly used, but I have been chained to cigarettes and due to ADHD, hyperfixations are also an issue. They can become addictive quickly if you are not prepared and are not looking for the signs.

How To Heal The Brain After Addiction

That argument sounds convincing to people unfamiliar with criminal procedure. It is also one of the most misunderstood aspects of how felony cases actually move through the legal system.

This article focuses on discovery—what it is, when it applies, and why limited or delayed discovery at this stage does not signal that a case is collapsing.

What discovery actually is—and what it isn’t

Discovery is the formal process by which the prosecution and defense exchange evidence once a case has entered an active litigation phase. It is designed to ensure fairness at trial, not to provide a running commentary on an ongoing investigation.

What discovery is not:

• A requirement that triggers the moment someone is arrested

• A right to see all evidence while an investigation is still unfolding

• Proof that a case is weak if it is not immediately turned over

Discovery exists to prepare for trial, not to satisfy public curiosity or social media speculation.

Discovery does not automatically begin at arrest
