How does one become ‘wise’?

Where does wisdom come from?

It begins, always, with knowledge – a basic acquaintance with facts, truths, and principles from study, observation or investigation. Being knowledgeable doesn’t make you wise, but it forms the foundation upon which wisdom is built.

Wisdom comes with experience, trial and error, evaluation, and lessons learned over time (even from failure!). Wisdom is earned. In order for any of this to happen, you must be open to the lesson, be flexible in your perspective, and be able to impart your experiences to others. The spark of wisdom is often revealed through moments of awe.

Now, let’s step into the astonishing realm of the 4th Rune of the Elder Futhark:

Ansuz – Rune of Divine Messages, Inspiration, and the Breath of Life

Rune Ansuz calls attention to the liminal spaces between inspiration and expression, between concept and creation, between the source and the song.

The word ‘inspiration’ refers to the arousal of the mind to special activity, creativity or emotion. It also means literally the drawing of air into the lungs.

When we inhale deeply, the spirit of life enters our body, our mind activates, and the ecstatic dialogue between the human and the divine can begin.

Ansuz reminds us that the words we speak are born from this sacred breath. They have impact. Influence. Power. Pausing to inhale this essence gives you the ability to form eloquent speech and clear communications.

• Breath Before Broadcast: Before sending any email, text, or social media comment – especially if you feel rushed or reactive – first pause with your fingers poised over the screen or keyboard. Take a full, deep inhale into your lungs through your nose. Feel the spirit of life enter your body, activating your mind. Ask yourself, “Is this message composed with thoughtful consideration, or am I just throwing static into the air?” As you exhale, edit out any friction or snark, and send your words with meaning and clear intention.

• The Everyday Guru Listening Game: To train yourself to be receptive to wonder and wisdom, try this shift. Pick one routine interaction today such as a conversation with a neighbor, a cashier, or even a frustrating coworker. For a minute or two, pretend this person is a hidden spiritual master sent specifically to send a message to you. Turn off your internal dialogue (the script of what you plan to say next) and just listen deeply. Pay attention to their word choices, tone, and emotion. For the disciplined mind, Thurisaz is a focusing lens – a gateway through which you can view and understand the nature of threats or actions that impact you. With this clarity, you can make precise, thoughtful decisions that neutralize attacks and psychological pressures aimed at you from near and far.

Thurisaz primarily reminds us that we are not powerless.

At the same time this is not an energy to be brandished recklessly or aggressively.

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine a thick, living hedge of thorny wild roses growing up in a circle around your personal space. You aren’t attacking anyone, just standing your ground. Yet anyone who tries to lunge, manipulate or push past your limits will impale themselves on your boundaries. • The Anti-Reactivity Drill: When someone throws a provocation, insult, or unfair demand at you, immediately pause for a few seconds without replying. Strength comes in many forms. There’s physical (muscles, endurance, stamina), mental (focus, problem-solving, positive self-talk), emotional (resilience, calm, empathy), social (clear communication, cooperation, vulnerability), and spiritual (commitment to values, ethics & beliefs).

Your survival depends upon having a blend of strengths that you can call upon and control. And yet, sometimes those who appear to be strong are merely performing.

It’s often the case that you’re unaware of your own strength or have only a vague sense of it. And sometimes we use our energy carelessly, without thinking. This is where we can encounter the ‘integrity gap’ – the difference between what we are capable of and what we actually do, or the dissonance between our values and our daily actions.

Other people might not notice the disparity, but your nervous system does.

If you feel the heat of burnout, low self-esteem, or imposter syndrome, taking on an Uruz mindset can help you correct course.

Begin with body care – adequate sleep, nutritious food, variations in physical activity, and genuinely supportive relationships.

It takes intentional effort to narrow or close the integrity gap, but doing so can relieve inner conflict, elevate your sense of self, and leave you feeling stable and confident. Fortunately, Uruz energy provides you with elemental oomph, like a massive multi-vitamin for your inner beast!

Using Uruz focus, summon your primal, instinctual energy to clear away the mental clutter imposed on you by media, workplace pressures, and dysfunctional situations in your personal life.

Then do the work to bridge these gaps:

• Self-awareness – get clear about which of your values, ethics and beliefs are non-negotiable.

• Invite a trusted friend to hold you accountable in areas where you know you’ve tended to fall short.

To align with the Rune of Raw Strength, Endurance, and Vitality, try these physical and mental recalibrations:

• The Uruz Shake-Off: When mental clutter, workplace pressure, or digital overload makes you feel dysregulated or burnt out, stand tall with your feet wide and planted firmly on the ground. Take a deep, audible breath into your belly. On a sharp, growling exhale, physically shake out your arms and stomp your feet into the floor. Imagine the arch of the Uruz Rune grounding you directly into the bedrock. Drop all your performative stress and social expectation straight into the dirt. This uses physical movement to tell your nervous system: “The threat isn’t real, my body is safe, and my reserves are deep.“

• Integrity Gap Bridge Repair: To close the distance between what you value and what you actually do, identify one minor area where your actions don’t match your values (e.g., valuing sleep but doomscrolling until midnight, or valuing health but skipping meals). Pick a 60-second micro-correction to execute today. If you value physical rest, close your eyes for 60 seconds without interruption. If you value honesty, send that one awkward text you’ve been putting off. Each small gap you close acts as a ‘reinforcer’ for your self-esteem, showing your brain that you keep promises to yourself.

• Primal Vitality Breathwork: Before starting a rigorous workout, a hard conversation, or a tough project, try this exercise. Standing outside on the ground (barefoot if possible), inhale through your nose for a count of 4 imagining a surge of rich green and golden light rising from the earth into the soles of your feet. Hold for 4 counts, letting that light rise up to pool in your lower belly (your instinctual center). Exhale forcefully for 4 counts, pushing that power out into your limbs. How do you define ‘wealth’ or ‘abundance’?

Does it mean possessions and status? Influence and freedom? Winning the ‘Jackpot’?

No matter how you spin it, abundance comes with responsibility – it takes effort and care to maintain our resources so we can shape the world around us and move forward toward our goals.

On that basis, let’s take a look at the 1st Rune of the Elder Futhark:

Fehu is oft regarded as the symbol of portable and transferable wealth – not only the money in your wallet, bank, or Venmo account, but also the advantages that your knowledge, talents, and connections provide you. Anything that ‘enriches’ you is following the Fehu-path to your door.

We did it. We have walked the full length of the ‘Rune Road’.

The Elder Futhark is a path through psychological and spiritual evolution. When you look back at the entire Runic Journey, you can see the three distinct chapters of your own growth:

1. The First Aett (Fehu to Wunjo) covered foundation and survival: Material security, vital energy, boundaries, wisdom, and reclaiming your personal joy.

2. The Second Aett (Hagalaz to Sowilo) tested your resilience: Surviving life’s disruptions, mastering stagnation, navigating the unknown, and finding your inner radiance.

3. The Third Aett (Tiwaz to Othala) taught you about personal free will and legacy: Principled leadership, fluid adaptation, deep intuition, and building a home where you truly belong.

There’s no place like home. . .

Everyone defines ‘Home’ in their own unique way. It could be your birthplace and genetic kin, your chosen family where you feel deep belonging, your body, or this precious blue planet we’re riding together in orbit around the sun.

You get to choose.

Contained within the foundation of that home are your connections to the past, your purpose(s) in the present, and your hopes for the future – all tethered to the idea of ‘Home’ that you, and you alone, carry in your heart.

Water is Life!

Yet how many of us even notice how affected we are by this natural element that covers over 70% of the earth’s surface?

Water is variable, mysterious, and pervasive – permeating every moment of our daily lives.

It’s no surprise we’re influenced by the tidal pull of the moon upon the currents of our inner ocean. How could we not be? The adult human body averages 60 – 70% water!

So, let’s step together into the ‘Sacred Deep’ with the 21st Rune of the Elder Futhark:

Laguz – Rune of Deep Knowing, the Universal Psyche, and the Flow of Life

As an archetype, Laguz embodies the water element. It symbolizes our unconscious mind and reigns over sacred wells and springs, rites of initiation, memory, dreams, emotions, intuition, and imagination.

If we think of Laguz as an expression of ‘Primal Water’ (in both a physical and spiritual sense) we can see that this elemental Rune represents a vastness of scale which can be daunting.

You made it!

If you feel different from who you were eight Runes ago, that’s because you are.

If you’ve followed my posts since March of 2026, you are now familiar with Runes 9 through 16 of the Elder Futhark. As a group these are called ‘Heimdall’s Aett’ – the second of three Elder Futhark families of Runes (‘Aett’ in Old Norse means family).

While the first set of 8 (Freya’s Aett: Fehu through Wunjo) gave us the tools for survival, this 2nd set gave us the grit to use those tools in the real world. ‘Heimdall’s Aett’ – named for the Norse god of perception, guardianship, and foresight – started in the eye of the storm and ended in the warmth of a hard-won victory.

Comprised of Runes Hagalaz through Sowilo, Heimdall’s Aett takes us on a tour through the great trials and unavoidable experiences of life, and shows us that through facing these difficulties, we evolve.

These Runes forge our character through exposing us to the meaning of existence.

Let’s look at the road we’ve traveled together so far:

• Hagalaz: You learned that disruption isn’t a defeat, but a clearing. You embraced the chaos to find out what remains intact.

• Naudhiz: By turning resistance and friction into fuel, you stopped asking “Why me?” and started saying “What’s next?”

• Isa: You found strength in the ‘Power of Pause’ learning that stillness is part of your biological infrastructure.

• Jera: You traded in your attachment to ‘Hustle Culture’ and began to trust the rhythm and flow of natural cycles.

• Eihwaz: You sunk your roots into your greatest aspirations, becoming the ‘Evergreen’ that stands strong, in all seasons.

• Perthro: You mastered the ‘Sacred Geometry of Chance’ and found that calculated risk is a gateway to growth.

• Elhaz: You sharpened your senses and built your boundaries, moving from ‘Numb’ to ‘Actively Aware’.

• Sowilo: You ignited your inner reserves and became a conduit of ‘Life Energy’, stepping into your own authority.

The Runes of Heimdall’s Aett are transformational. They deal with themes of disruption, change, impermanence, and even unexpected luck. Through introspection and endurance, you’ve become better at navigating your own life’s course.

Runic Practice:

Take a few minutes today to look back at your notes or my previous 8 posts.

• Review Your Path: List ways that you’ve recently experienced disruption (Hagalaz), dealt with resistance or distress (Naudhiz), felt stalled or restricted (Isa), witnessed cycles (Jera), took steps to be more grounded and hardier (Eihwaz), taken a chance (Perthro), protected your boundaries (Elhaz), or connected to the energy of life (Sowilo).

• Measure Your Growth: Think about how you’ve grown from having all these experiences. What was your biggest ‘Win’? It could be a project finished, a boundary set, a habit swapped, etc.

• Name Your Power: Say, “I have traveled through the tempest to reach the calm. Now, like the Sun, I am the ‘Radiant Authority’ of my own Journey.” By naming the ‘Win’ you are telling your brain’s Limbic System that the struggle was worth it, which flushes out corrosive cortisol and replaces it with ‘Sowilo Serotonin’.

Next week we’ll continue our journey through the final group of 8 Runes – Tyr’s Aett, starting with Tiwaz. On this stretch we’ll move from surviving the ‘Testing Grounds’ and enter the realm of Spirit, Law, and Legacy.

We’ll begin defining our place in the world by exploring integrity, empathy, partnership, social harmony, the collective unconscious, pure potential, radical breakthrough, and lasting legacy.
