UTMB Introduces A Mandatory Red Light Rule for 2026

Runners participating in this year’s HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc will need to check their mandatory kit carefully, as UTMB introduces a mandatory red light rule, aimed at protecting wildlife.

For the first time, competitors must carry at least one headtorch capable of emitting a forward-facing red light. The red light must be used while passing through the Contamines-Montjoie Nature Reserve, where runners travel at night. The initiative is designed to reduce light disturbance to nocturnal wildlife while maintaining safe progress on the largely uphill, non-technical section of the course. Race officials have confirmed that penalties for non-compliance could range from time penalties to disqualification.

The change is thought to be the first of its kind at a major international ultra and could signal the start of a wider move towards biodiversity-focused mandatory equipment at trail races around the world.

Petzl steps in to help runners

In response to the rule change, our friends at Petzl have developed a lightweight 5g red filter that clips onto compatible NAO RL and SWIFT RL headtorches, allowing runners to comply with the new regulations without replacing their existing lighting system.

Even better, the filters are being provided free of charge throughout the summer, with collection available from participating retailers in Chamonix and Courmayeur, as well as through Petzl’s after-sales service in France.

Kirsty Reade and Angie Funtanilla

Kirsty Reade ran Hardrock 100 two weeks ago, and although she was just over the 48 cut-off to finish, she became the first British woman to finish the loop. Angie Funtanilla volunteered for iRunFar, and was positioned around the course in order to feedback results and photos during the race. She joined Kirsty talking to Kate and Robin about the whole experience from both sides, giving us a fantastic picture of this stunning and tough race.

It was a huge pleasure chatting to David; it’s a long episode but we had so much more to ask him, so he’s definitely coming back. Possibly the nicest guy in ultra running.

Chris Mills and Debs White - Cape to Glen

After the announcement of Spine taking over Cape Wrath from Ourea Events, I invited Chris and Debs on to talk about their own unique event on the Cape Wrath trail. We discuss how it came into being and Debs own long experience of the original race on both sides of the fence. What emerged sounds like it will be a very different, albeit highly professional, challenge (not race!) which they want to make as accessible as possible for anyone wanting to explore the Cape Wrath Trail under a safe umbrella. Debs’ passion shines through and it was clear to me that while they agreed it was frustrating to have another event, they are cheerful and optimistic about theirs.

This wasn’t Sue’s first 100 and we talk about why she was last, how she battled an injury at 40 miles and an ongoing niggle which stopped her running at 66 miles. Where many would throw in the towel, she kept going, chasing cut offs and in spite of everything she finished.

We also touch on what happened at Biotropika and a possible new Backyard record plus Western States starts tomorrow and we are cheering on the Brits, including Fi Pascall.

Western States Looks Set to be Another Classic

The 53rd edition of the iconic Western States Endurance Run (WSER) is this weekend and brings together one of the deepest elite fields in the event’s history.

Great Britain’s Fiona Pascall, who finished an impressive fifth in last year’s race, lines up alongside defending champion Abby Hall, China’s Fuzhao Xiang and Canadian Marianne Hogan in what promises to be a fiercely contested women’s race across the iconic 100.2-mile course from Olympic Valley to Auburn, California.

The return of Hall is particularly significant. The American produced one of the standout performances of 2025, winning in 16:37, the fourth-fastest women’s time ever recorded at Western States. Xiang, who finished second last year, is expected to provide strong competition once again.

For British fans, however, much of the attention will be on Pascall. The Peak District-based athlete has established herself as one of the leading figures in European trail running and arrives at Western States with valuable experience of the race after last year’s top-five finish.

We chatted to Fiona on the RunUltra Podcast leading up to last year’s WSER, discussing everything from training and recovery to the challenges of balancing racing ambitions with everyday life. The conversation offered listeners a fascinating insight into the mindset of one of Britain’s most accomplished ultra runners ahead of another major test on the global stage.

While the women’s race looks exceptionally competitive, the men’s field is equally strong. Four-time champion Jim Walmsley returns to the race where he holds the course record of 14:09, set in 2019. He will face a formidable challenge from 2011 champion Kilian Jornet, widely regarded as one of the greatest trail runners of all time, who finished third last year and continues to compete at the very highest level.

Former champion Adam Peterman is also back after securing his place through the HOKA Golden Ticket series, while Italian star Francesco Puppi will make his eagerly anticipated 100-mile debut.

Race Director Craig Thornley believes the combination of returning champions, rising stars and favourable conditions could produce one of the fastest editions in recent memory.

“The HOKA Golden Ticket season (the months-long series of qualifying races where elites battle for a Western States entry) was as competitive and as fast as I can ever remember. Abby Hall ran a tactically brilliant race last year and has had a great spring. And for both the women and the men, many of the top 10 are returning from last year, along with some really strong and interesting Western States newcomers joining us for the first time through the HOKA Golden Ticket series. Having past champions like Jim Walmsley, Kilian and Adam Peterman back add even more to the tradition that is Western States. These are some of the great and inspiring figures from our history. And they are going to have a definite say in what transpires this year. It’s going to be exciting to see how it all plays out.”

Adding to the excitement is the prospect of ideal race conditions. A relatively dry spring means there is no snow remaining on the course, while forecast temperatures are expected to remain considerably cooler than the extreme heat that has often shaped previous editions.

The race begins at 5am local time on Saturday 27 June and will be streamed live throughout the weekend on YouTube. However, at the end of the year she has her sights set on something quite different - the Antarctic Ultra where she will not only be the first woman competitor, but she hopes to set a new 24 hour record and go over the 100 miles currently reached at approx 22 hours. We chatted about dnfs, doping, nutrition, mind set and so much more.

Sage Canaday

One of the reasons we love Sage is his light hearted side alongside his more serious training content and it was great having him on.

Three Major Trail Running Events to look forward to this Weekend

This weekend, ultra running has three major trail running events to follow, all of which draw elite fields across the UK and Europe.

Starting the action is the South Downs Way 100 and 50km, a World Trail Majors race and the 2026 British Trail Running Championships (Ultra Distance), while the Montane Summer Spine Race returns to the Pennine Way and Italy’s Dolomiti Extreme Trail celebrates another year of world-class mountain racing.

Centurion Running South Downs Way

Around 1,000 runners from more than 30 countries are expected to compete across the 100-mile and 50km races, with the 100-mile event serving as the British Trail Running Championships (Ultra Distance).

The South Downs Way 100 follows the entire National Trail from Winchester to Eastbourne, covering 100 miles and approximately 13,000 feet of climbing. First held in its current format in 2012, the race traces one of Britain’s oldest pathways, with sections of the route having been used for more than 8,000 years.

The women’s 100-mile race features one of the strongest fields assembled in the event’s history. British hopes rest with World 24-Hour Record Holder Sarah Webster, former Lakeland 100 and Dragon’s Back Race winner Robyn Cassidy, and Imo Boddy, who recently set a course record at the LA to LV Speed Project.

They face formidable international opposition from France’s Maryline Nakache, a three-time Marathon des Sables champion, and American ultrarunning star Nicole Bitter.

The men’s race is equally competitive. Hugh Tibbs arrives after victory at this year’s Arc of Attrition and having twice finished runner-up at South Downs Way. He will face strong challenges from Simon Withers, Henry Hart, Joseph Turner and South Downs Way 50 winner Matt Hammerton.

The 50km races have also attracted impressive international talent. Spain’s Antonio Martinez, the reigning Transgrancanaria Marathon champion and former World Skyrunning Champion, starts as one of the favourites in the men’s race, while fellow Spaniard Nuria Gil leads the women’s field after her runner-up finish at Transgrancanaria earlier this year.

British contenders include Rebecca Bunting, Nicole Funnell, Karla Borland, Peter Le Grice and Thomas Almond, the latter making his trail racing debut following success on the roads and at 100km. The South Downs Way 100 forms part of the 2026 World Trail Majors Series and remains one of the UK’s premier ultra-distance trail races. The course records stand at 13:42 by Mark Darbyshire and 16:30 by Lucy Gossage.

Montane Summer Spine

Further north, the Montane Summer Spine Race once again brings runners to Britain’s most iconic long-distance trail.

The event follows the 268-mile Pennine Way National Trail and is widely regarded as one of the toughest endurance races in the UK. Alongside the full Summer Spine, the weekend programme includes the Challenger North and South races and the Sprint North and South events.

Among those entered into the full Summer Spine are Anna Troup, returning to defend her title from last year and Jon Shield, who hopes this year will turn into a better race than 2025 when he struggled with feet issues post Cape Wrath.

While the winter edition often grabs the headlines because of its brutal weather, the summer version presents its own challenges. Long hours of exposure, navigation, sleep deprivation and relentless terrain ensure that finishing remains a significant achievement regardless of the season.

The Challenger and Sprint races are also expected to produce highly competitive racing, with hundreds of runners taking on shorter sections of the Pennine Way as part of one of Britain’s most distinctive endurance events.

Dolomiti Extreme Trail

In northern Italy, the Dolomiti Extreme Trail (DXT) returns to Val di Zoldo from 12–14 June, attracting runners from around the world to one of Europe’s most spectacular mountain running venues.

Since its first edition in 2013, DXT has grown into one of Italy’s premier trail running festivals. The event now features seven race distances ranging from 11km to the flagship 103km Ronda delle Cime, which circumnavigates the mountains surrounding Val di Zoldo in the UNESCO-listed Dolomites.

The event is renowned for its highly technical terrain, steep climbs and dramatic mountain scenery. The course is one of the most challenging and rewarding mountain races in Europe, with technical descents and exposed alpine trails adding to the challenge.

Elite fields across the longer distances are expected to feature some of Italy’s strongest mountain runners alongside international contenders. The 103km and 72km races traditionally provide the weekend’s headline battles, while the shorter races attract specialists looking to test themselves on some of the most demanding terrain in the Alps.

This year’s event also follows the successful launch of the Dolomiti Women’s Trail, the organisers’ women-only race initiative that has helped broaden participation and strengthen female representation within mountain running. The project was widely welcomed across the trail running community and highlights the event’s commitment to developing opportunities for women in the sport.

Ultra X Acquires Dragon’s Back and Northern Traverse

Speaking to Kate after the announcement, Ultra X co-founder Sam Heward emphasised that the priority is not reinvention, but continuity and they want to reassure runners that the Dragon’s Back Race and Northern Traverse will retain their identity following their acquisition from Ourea Events.

“It’s important to us that runners get what they paid for,” he said, reinforcing that both events will be delivered in line with expectations already set.

What This Means for Runners

Ultra X has outlined a series of immediate goodwill measures aimed at supporting affected participants:

The 2026 Dragon’s Back Race will go ahead as planned, with all existing entries honoured.
Entries for the 2026 Northern Traverse will be transferred to the 2027 edition.
Entrants for the cancelled Cape Wrath Ultra 2026 will be offered credit equivalent to their entry fee, redeemable against any Ultra X event for a period of three years, including Dragon’s Back and Northern Traverse.

All registered runners across the three events will be contacted directly with further details.

Proven Experience in Multi-Day Ultras

Ultra X is not new to complex, multi-day racing. The Ultra X team already delivers a portfolio of multi-stage ultras across the globe, demonstrating a level of operational experience that will provide reassurance to entrants concerned about delivery.

This acquisition marks an important moment for Ultra X as it invests for the first time in two world-class ultra-endurance experiences. Both races have built passionate communities, distinctive identities and hard-earned reputations for delivering unforgettable journeys through some of Britain’s most spectacular landscapes and it’s important to Sam that the races retain these unique personalities.

Keeping the Team Behind the Races

A key part of that continuity lies in people, not just format.

Former Ourea Events Operations Director Greg Mickelborough will take on a central role, becoming Managing Director of a new company wholly owned by Ultra X, which will oversee both Dragon’s Back Race and Northern Traverse.

Sam highlighted that bringing across members of the original delivery team was a deliberate decision:

“Much of what defines these races comes down to the people behind them and retaining that expertise is seen as critical to preserving their character.”

Former CEO Shane Ohly also remains involved in a consultancy capacity, further supporting continuity during the transition.

Sam also stated this belief that these two events themselves were not responsible for Ourea’s collapse, saying that both have a strong future and remain highly valued within the ultra running community.

“No Immediate Changes” But Evolution Expected

While Ultra X has committed to maintaining the current format in the short term, Sam acknowledged that change over time is inevitable.

“No doubt there will be changes over the next few years,” he said, “but the immediate goal is to keep events as they are.”

Any future developments, he added, will be shaped by runner feedback and careful review rather than wholesale overhaul.

A New Chapter With Familiar Foundations

This approach suggests a steady transition rather than a reset. For runners, particularly those already entered, a clear message is being sent: expect the same races, delivered by many of the same people, under new ownership.

That balance between preservation and progression will ultimately define how successfully Ultra X can carry forward two of the UK’s most respected endurance events.

RunUltra Entry Confirmed for Dragon’s Back Race

As part of the transition, Ultra X has confirmed it will honour RunUltra’s entry for Bryony Shircore in the Dragon’s Back Fire Race.

RunUltra will be following Bryony’s journey closely, and will focus on female accessibility and representation. RunUltra will highlight her experience of taking on one of the UK’s toughest multi-day ultras under the new ownership. Bryony was thrilled with the news;

“I was absolutely delighted to read Ultra X’s email this morning. I cannot imagine the work that goes into taking on such an iconic race but I am so happy they are doing so! As a member of the local running community, I can confidently say the race brings a huge sense of excitement to the area, with an impact that extends far beyond the immediate community/region. I’m really looking forward to getting back out into the local hills to start recce-ing the route knowing that this race will be going ahead.”

Registrations for the 2026 Dragon’s Back Race have now reopened, with Northern Traverse entries for 2027 expected to follow soon.

Chris started running ultras at 50 years old, 14 years ago. He’s run UTMB and since 2023 he’s done the full Spine, Challenger North and Challenger South. We talk about his background in mountaineering and his approach to running and training as he prepares to run a Bob Graham Round. As an older runner, it’s very inspiring to listen his positivity and plans going forward.
