Now, let’s unpack the word structure. Structure is what’s going to give your outfit shape and define the pieces you’ve put together. It keeps the look intentional rather than sloppy (especially once we get to that oversized portion). This can come in many forms: a sharp blazer, a cinched waist, a study tote. Anything that adds an anchor to your look.

Here are a few ideas of categories that can lean into the element of structure:

1. Trousers: a great pair of tailored trousers can make any outfit into something special. Denim is always a go-to, but a really easy way to make a look feel more polished is to swap jeans for a pair of well fitting pants. If they puddle a bit on the bottom or have a wider leg, it’s doing double duty as they can also lean into the oversized category.

   Some trousers I love:

   a. this gorgeous pair butter yellow

   b. these are one of my all time favorite cuts

   c. I have two pairs of these made of regenerative cotton

   d. so chic and organic cotton!

2. Vests: I cannot talk about vests enough- they are a perfect fit for this category. They offer shape, structure, and interest while keeping the bulk minimal. Especially helpful if you’re smaller or shorter to not overwhelm your frame. I love adding a vest over a flowy dress, over a tank with jeans, as a matching piece to the above mentioned trousers. I’m telling you, a vest is where it’s at.

   Best vests:

   a. absolutely so cute for fall

   b. I have this lightweight tropical wool vest

   c. perfect linen option

   d. I own this one in two colors (love the red!)

3. Accessories: don’t get pigeonholed into thinking that structure can only mean a clothing item. Belts, scarves, shoes, and bags can all have something valuable to offer here. Plus, they can be a two-for-one also providing statement. A belt around your waist, a scarf for a more playful vibe, or a handbag with a strong shape can all be useful to anchor a look.

   Examples of accessories that offer structure:

   a. a cummerbund- like belt (also very much a statement)

   b. strong boots

   c. a structured carryall bag

   d. a gorgeous scarf (on sale!)

   e. strong loafer can ground a look

Anything tied around the waist can add shape as well. An oversized look can be cinched in with a button down:

It’s something that has always come fairly easy to me, yes. But I also thinks it’s a learnable skill and an applicable method to make the morning rush that much smoother.

Enter: The S.O.S Method. I’ll break each word down and offer some examples of each.

1. Structure: every outfit needs it. Structure is what keeps the look intentional rather than sloppy. Structure can mean many different things depending on where your day is headed. Going into the office? Perhaps you need a structured belt or a blazer. A day of running errands? Look for a more structured loafer or a well made tote bag. Date night or meeting the girls? Structure here can lean into a scarf tied around the waist, a tall boot, or a killer pump. What we are looking for is something that gives the outfit its shape and buttons it all up.

   Some examples of pieces with structure:

   a. a perfect loafer

   b. an understated croc belt

   c. luxe tote in a bright color

   d. tall boot with a strong toe

   e. the blazer that works with everything

2. Oversized: an oversized piece adds a relaxed element to an outfit. Think: an oversized button down, a t shirt in a size up, or a slouchy pair of trousers. If you can get away with it, adding one oversized component instantly creates an “I-just-threw-this-on” feeling, even if that’s far from true. Look for things that create some drape… if they feel too overwhelming, that’s where the structure comes in, to keep it all reading “relaxed and chic” rather than “messy and unkempt”. Consider even a sweater around the shoulders or a scarf around the neck… oversized doesn’t have to relate solely to a piece of clothing, anything that creates some bulk to the silhouette and adds interest.

   Examples of oversized pieces:

   a. a big t-shirt

   b. perfectly slouchy trousers

   c. button down sized up (bonus for stripes)

   d. consider a wrap

   e. or a pair of killer denim

3. Statement: this is the fun part. This gives the entire look personality and injects your own style into the look. Statement can come in many forms. A chunky ring, a fun bag, a hat, a long necklace. And you don’t have to limit it to one! A few statements peppered in head to toe take even the most basic outfit up several notches. This is the area to play!

   Examples of statement pieces:

   a. the necklace I wear nonstop

   b. a huge slouchy bag

   c. don’t forget a hat

   d. brooches are hot night now

   e. a pop of a bright color

And that’s it! Not too hard, right? Next time you’re standing in your closet thinking you have nothing to wear, consider this method, and start to pull from each category. Tweak as needed until you have an outfit all your own. I recently added the Emma skirt and it's the most beautiful, comfortable, elegant skirt I own.

   

2. Abby Alley - working out of Chicago, IL, Abby has become not only a maker of beautiful leather goods, but also a friend over the past year. It always feels good when the person behind the brand is as genuine as Abby is. She’s been a huge supporter of me and other smaller creators, and her designs are as functional and well made as they are pleasing to the eye. Small batch-designs and high-quality craftsmanship collide in her beautiful bags, wallets, and card holders. Her sling bag is the gateway drug, making hands-free elegant and chic. I have the gorgeous Everyday Bucket bag , and it’s one of those pieces that only get better with age and use. (and I use the Mini Wallet as my everyday wallet- forcing me to stay minimal in what I keep in there- it’s the perfect size for my license, a few credit cards, and some emergency cash). I would be remiss not to mention the Soriee bag- (I call it my little dumpling) it’s a perfect touch for those nights out. Her pieces sell out quickly, and for good reason. Sign up for restocks if what you have your eye on isn’t available- it helps her gauge interest so she knows what to make more of.

   

3. Maria de la Orden- This new-to-me brand has my full attention. With the most fun and whimsical shapes and patterns, this brand is founded by two women with an eye for making color and eye-catching cuts in a way that feels accessible for everyday. I have the Paolo Pants and I’m completely enamored by them. They give just enough to feel special without being too overwhelming. I also picked up the Thea Vest- the muted stripes and frog closures garner compliments with every wear. I have my eye on the Fittonia Jacket as a transitional piece, and the Spencer Shorts to keep even the most basic outfit interesting.

4. La Veste- how two women can have enough creative juices to come up with not one but TWO completely unique and inspirational brands is beyond me, but the same founders as María de la Orden are also the creatives behind La Veste- the most colorful and playful brand I’ve yet to come across. Every single piece is an “ah ha” moment, rife with jaw dropping stripes, bold colors, and fabrics that stop me in my tracks. I wear their Parasol Pants constantly. The soft cotton and wide stripes are surprisingly easy to wear with almost anything. If you’re looking for a real statement, the Pippi Pants are a cult favorite and sell out fast. The caftans and hot shorts and terrycloth (oh my!) are a playground of fun for the fashion lover. Nonstop hits.

   

5. Mademoiselle Jules- believe me when I tell you that I wear my Mademoiselle Jules pieces every single day. To me, nothing anchors an outfit quite like a couple of strategic pieces of statement jewelry, and MJ does that SO well. My Pearl Whisper Necklace has literally had people on the street run me down to ask where I got it from. Her collections are full of tassels, seashells, pearls, and stones in designs that manage to be both attention-grabbing and understated. People recognize quality, and Mademoiselle Jules has that in spades. I’ve gotten such a collection that I often stack up two longer necklaces at once- I love a little drama around my neck. I thought about women whose sense of style I admire, but more the point, why? What is it is about an outfit that makes us feel something? Why can two people wear the same thing but give completely different looks?

I encourage you all to get curious. Even do a “branding exercise” on yourself. Make a mood board, pin outfits you love, screenshot interiors and celebrities that speak to you. Then lay it all out on the proverbial table and brainstorm. Tweak it, and make it your own.

This led me to the term “Quiet Maximalist”, and I had an “ah-ha” moment. While I so admire capsule wardrobes and black and white outfits… they left me personally feeling a bit lacking. So… I warmed things up, I tried color combos that were soothing and interesting. I layered in strong textures, prints, and elements that helped convey my personality.

There’s something about suede that just feels like fall. It’s cozy without being heavy, polished without being precious. And every September, I find myself circling back to it, like clockwork. Leather gets all the glory for being sleek and cool, but suede is leather’s softer, moodier cousin—the one who reads French novels, wears boots to the grocery store, and somehow manages to look elegant even with a latte in hand.

Suede is having a moment again, and it feels stronger this year than years past?Maybe it’s the seventies influence creeping back into fashion (thank you, Gucci and Saint Laurent), or maybe we’re all just craving a little more texture in our wardrobes. Either way, suede feels right—especially now, when the days are still warm but the mornings and evenings are cooler.

The thing I love about suede is that it has range. It can be quite luxury or straight-up bohemian depending on how you style it. A suede blazer? Chic. A suede skirt? Fun. A slouchy suede tote? Cool-girl uniform. Even a simple suede belt can transform jeans and a tee into something that looks intentional instead of accidental.

And let’s talk about shoes. Suede boots are fall’s unofficial mascot. (I’ve been waiting for this pair to come out since May and I cannot wait to get my hands on them!) I’d argue they look better a little lived-in—the nap softening with time, the edges darkening in spots, telling the story of actual life being lived in them. They’re the opposite of patent leather, which always feels like it should be stored in a dust bag and only worn to dinner. Suede invites you to wear it, to break it in, to make it yours.

Of course, suede comes with its quirks. The water stains, the fear of brushing up against a dirty curb, the way it picks up every bit of city grime like a magnet. It’s a high-maintenance friend, yes, but one that pays you back in personality. And honestly, a little wear makes suede better. A pristine suede jacket looks too…uptight. A broken-in one tells tales of running around collecting memories in it.

I recently tried on a suede shirt jacket and immediately understood why people call suede “buttery.” It melts against the skin. It’s soft but structured, drapes just right, and makes everything underneath feel more elevated. Suede has a way of making you look pulled-together even if you’re just wearing it over a white tank and jeans.

The seventies spirit is strong here, too. Suede is forever tied to that era—earth tones, fringe, wide-leg trousers, oversized collars. But modern suede feels more pared back. Instead of head-to-toe Woodstock, think one really good piece that anchors your look. A pair of suede block heels with straight-leg trousers. A caramel suede skirt with a crisp button-down. A boxy suede bag in deep olive or chocolate brown. It’s seventies-adjacent but with sharper lines and fewer bells and whistles.

If you’re wondering how to dip your toe into suede without going full-on coat or boots, accessories are the gateway. A suede clutch, belt, or loafer is an easy entry point that won’t break the bank—or your patience when it rains. I’m especially into suede sneakers right now. They have that sporty-casual vibe but with an elevated twist.

And because I know someone will ask: yes, you can wear suede year-round. It’s not just for fall. I think we’ve been conditioned to put suede away once spring arrives, but that feels outdated. Light suede in sandy neutrals looks incredible with linen and cotton in the summer. A pair of pale suede mules with a sundress? Perfection. The key is to swap the darker shades for lighter ones when the weather turns warm. And also- it just doesn’t feel right to talk about suede without including a pair of blue suede shoes.

So this fall, I’m leaning into suede. Maybe it’s a pair of boots I’ll wear until they practically disintegrate. Maybe it’s a coat that will feel like armor on days I want to look more polished than I feel. Or maybe it’s just a belt that makes my jeans feel new again. Whatever form it takes, suede has that rare ability to feel both nostalgic and current. Which is exactly what I want my wardrobe to be right now. Happy fall! xx

This week, that’s been…

This swimsuit, I’ve been spending long summer days at the beach with my kids, in the backyard sprinklers, or at friends pools. It’s truly life changing to have a dependable swimsuit that I know looks great and will stay put. Life is too short for fussing with your bathing suit nonstop! (also- they make the best coverups, perfect for beach days that roll into early dinners out)

One of my favorite accessories is a great purse. I’m a shoe and purse gal through and through. This one has been in heavy rotation since I got it about a month ago. I love the double zip top and the ability to use the short steps or add a longer strap for a crossbody. My other fave ATM is this one- what can I say? I’m a sucker for some lush suede.

I love a white button down. The possibilities are endless, dress it up, down, push up the sleeves, cinch it in, leave it messy… its always the first thing I pack for a trip and something I reach for on days I feel lazy or rushed. I’ve been a fan of this brand for years, they check all my boxes: women owned, small business, local, and uses sustainable and ethical practices. They recently sent me this shirt and I am smitten. It is so crisp and cool… exactly what you want to wear on a hot summer day.

These shoes. End of story. I love them. They are buttery soft, I’m nuts over the chocolate color, and I love the crisscross detail.

I got the best DM today, I’m paraphrasing, but it was singing the praises of these pants. She said that when she put them on she just had one of those moments where she couldn’t believe she was just now discovering them. They really are that good. The most chic alternative to sweat pants for when sweats just won’t cut it. I wear them everywhere, with everything, for any event. They always work. They are from a brand that stays true to their ethos in everything that they do. I love them paired with the tube top for summer. (or the button down mentioned above!)

Lastly, a wild card, but OHHO sent me a few of their products recently and I have really been liking them. They are a botanical wellness brand that specializes in THC and CBD products. I am not a believer in pushing anything to “escape” your life… or “needing” an alternative to alcohol. But, the truth is, sometimes we want a little assist in chilling out, laughing to some dumb tv, and getting a good night sleep. I’ve used these drops, and I like the fact that I can control the portion. I’m a lightweight, so I only add a few drops to a sparkling water. The next couple hours I feel very relaxed and I sleep like a rock. No morning grogginess either. So, if you’re curious, RUTH15 gets you a discount to try for yourself. So, as of late:

these shorts have been in heavy rotation. I love styling them back to more boyish or masculine pieces for some tension (in the same vein, but I love the longer inseam, is these )

I got a couple new Parker Thatch bags in after eyeballing them for the better part of a year, the Charlie was gifted to me but it’s been on my wishlist forever and it does not disappoint! Smooshy suede goodness, great size, I love the double zippers and the ability to add a cross body strap. Then I bought the Mochi as well in chestnut suede, it adds so much to an otherwise simple look. Comes with a shoulder strap too

I have had the Bari crop pants for years and years. But they’d fallen down in my closet hierarchy and I hadn’t worn them recently. But I brought them for my trip and I remember now why I bought them in 3 colors. They are soft and comfortable, the cut is perfect and I love the pleats with a belt.

These sandals are an investment. But sometimes something just speaks to you. I have always loved a studded sandal to my core. These are made of a singular piece of leather that sort of wrap around your foot. They have snaps at all the straps and I adore them with a chic monochrome outfit. So perfect.

And lastly- beyond obsessed with the entire Ursa Major line. I have these face wipes in my purse, car, fridge, and bathroom. Perfect for after yoga or when I need a refresh. My gateway drug from them was the mountain glow serum that LITERALLY makes you glow, and the vitamin c serum would be one of my desert island picks.

Shoes:

Travel shoes can be tricky. They have to be comfortable, they have to be fairly easy to remove, and they need to look good. I have been loving the Onitsuka Tigers for a less obvious version of the ubiquitous Adidas.

The Onisukas can be hard to find, and often sold out in many sizes, so I also love the Gola Race for a similar look. These are really cute too and come in a wide array of colors.

I fell in love with these Alohas as well. They remind me of the Miu Miu sneakers that are so popular for a fraction.

I often wear loafers with socks when traveling as well. These are pricey, but nothing else I’ve tried compare, they mold to your feet and feel like butter. They are classic. I’ve had mine for 4 years and they only get better. Easy to slip on and off and really elevate an outfit.

Outfits:

Personally, I like to travel in natural fibers for breathability. A matching set always makes me feel pulled together, and I usually have an extra layer for chilly airplane cabins.

I have been living in this army jacket, it’s so soft and a perfect layering piece with an instant cool factor.

I just got these regenerative cotton pants and I am so smitten. I plan to wear them for an international flight tomorrow with an organic cotton tee (RUTHG20) and the aforementioned army jacket.

Gear:

I love my Cuyana Zipper Tote. It has pockets and d rings to make sure things don’t get lost, and you can purchase the additional organizational system to take it a step further. It feels super lux and this new color is so dreamy!

My suitcase is the AWAY bigger carry-on and I love it. It fits so much but still qualifies for the overhead compartment. It has internal straps for compression and glides along like a dream. 10/10

I’ve spent so much money on travel pillows only to be disappointed. BUT, I finally found one that works and is comfortable. No more painful neck postures, I actually got sleep with this one.

Speaking of sleep, a silk eye mask, traveling or not, is a game changer. I take this one with me for the flight and for hotels or Airbnb’s with less than stellar blinds.

Compression socks and slippers. No explanation needed. An absolute must for long haul flights.

I love to mask on flights, and I spray hydrating mists throughout. Gotta love arriving to your destination with a dewy glow.

But, even that can prove overwheming. The feeling is that we need to throw out everything we own and start from scratch. But don’t! The most sustainable closet is the one you already own. Wearing your clothing, weather its from Zara or a small label using organic materials, in the end, makes not much difference if you don’t WEAR them, don’t keep them, don’t take care of them and re-purpose them and re-style them. If you just replace it with more, even a closet stuffed with “sustainable” clothing becomes unsustainable. Below, a few tips to break things down.

1. Assess what you have. Make four piles: keep, donate, repair/alter, and maybe.

• The keeps are pieces you love that you reach for again and again. Jackets, blazers, jeans, pants, vests, etc are things that I personally wear a lot of. About twice a year I pull things out, try them on, decide how I’m feeling about things. Some things I know are keepers but it’s off season or something I know I’ll want again but I don’t gravitate towards right now. I’ll store those things away (and when I pull them back out it’s like new clothing again!)

• Donate- for me it’s usually things I bought on impulse or didn’t try on first, or bought because it was on sale so my brain tricked me into thinking I needed it, then never wore (sound familiar?). I try to really keep this to a minimum. Most fast fashion I’ve bought ends up here, and I see what a waste of money that is, so I really try to steer clear of the big chain stores. I give his pile to friends, or donate it to a local shelter.

• Repair/alter- before I toss, I think about if I could adjust the fit or style and keep wearing this piece. I’ve turned a dress into a two piece outfit, I’ve cut jeans into shorts, altered tops that don’t sit right, and then ended up wearing these things happily. So consider this before you toss.

• The maybe pile- I keep this one around and go through it every couple months. It’s stuff I like but haven’t figured out how to wear or had the right occasion to wear it. After a few months in the maybe pile, I let it go.

2. Find brands that resonate with your values and make products you will love and cherish.

Search hashtags on instagram. #sustanablestyle #smallbusiness #slowfashion etc can be helpful ways to discover smaller brands you might like.

  3. Go slowly. It’s not about creating the perfect closet within a few weeks. It will take time to find pieces that speak to you, fit you perfectly, and align with what you are tying to create. Let it. Look in secondhand shops when you travel, search local farmers markets or craft fairs for small designers and artisans. When you see something you like on another person, ask them about it. Some of my most loved items are things I came across when I wasn’t looking, while traveling or when someone walked by wearing it. I love collecting. The thrill of the hunt.

  4. Composition matters. Have you ever washed something for the first time only to have it disintegrate in the washer? Yeah, check the fabrics, cheap synthetics don’t hold up and shed microfibers into your skin. If you want your clothing to last and feel great, opt for cotton, wool, linen, hemp, silk… and then take good care of them. Wash sparingly, in cold, hang dry (maybe a quick tumble in a cool dryer to soften). Do I have pieces from Zara or H&M? Most certainly, but… those pieces are 100% linen, wool, or cotton so I’ve been able to keep them looking nice and I wear them often.

  5. Know yourself. Lastly, know yourself, know your lifestyle, be honest about what works for you and if you will actually wear what you are thinking about purchasing. Do you work in an office? Do you attend a lot of parties or events? Are in in the phase of being home with young children? Think about what you wear most and then look for those pieces, but maybe elevated. If you are currently home with young kids and wear leggings a lot, maybe a flowing wide leg pant in a lighweight wool can level up the look. A sweater can be worn over the shoulders for texture, around the waist, or on your body if temperatures fluctuate. Think about pieces that can be worn different ways, and what parts of yourself you like to highlight. Work with that, and start where you are.

The Motley Vintage honestly, more of a museum, the owner has been collecting vintage for decades and her assembly is BANANAS. One-of-a-kind concert tees, overalls that most likely attended the original Woodstock, Levi’s from the 1970’s, it’s truly a collection like none other I’ve seen. Plus the owner is just the most fun and a total badass herself.

Ok- long shorts. I won’t shut up about them. I love them with flip flops or kitten heels, cowboy boots or sandals. They just work for anything. These have been selling like hotcakes and for good reason, they are well made, soft and comfortable and under $50. For more of a relaxed jort vibe I adore These and a more budget friendly option would be these . (Hate to say it, but I wanted to dislike these but I love them. The fit is perfection)

These jeans are a perfect summer pair. Love the wash and the frayed hem. So cute with kitten heeled sandals or flip flops.

Also- I just got word that my favorite Finn bandana was just restocked! I love the neutrals colors and I’ve worn it so many ways. It’s a great travel piece or a perfect gift!

• I don’t gate keep, but this morning when my skin needed a pick me up, I reached for my $20 magic mask, and realized I’ve never shared it. Well, that changes now. The website looks janky, but it’s legit and I don’t know how this mask works but you put on a thin layer, peel it off 10 mins later and your skin glows all day. Whew, glad I got that off my chest.

• I just finished this book, and I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s set in Mumbai and it’s a hauntingly beautiful tale of the power of women, friendship, and the grip of an antiquated caste system. It’s a really great book and I’m already reading another by the same author.

• FREDA SALVADOR just launched their summer line, and there are so many amazing pieces, hard core eyeballing this pair… how perfect with dresses or long shorts and wispy tops this summer??

• Speaking of long shorts…It’s a long shorts summer for me. I love the “surfer casual” feel of a pair of long shorts, and I’ve been wearing this pair nonstop. I wore this pair to an event yesterday and I think I got four women to order them on the spot. They look and feel just like the Ozma field pants, in a shorts version and at a fraction of the cost. • Janessa Leone hats all summer. They are all I wear, they are the best. I am fair skinned and blonde so a hat is as much of a necessity for me as it is a fashion accessory.

• I picked up two pairs of these huggie hoops yesterday and I LOVE them. I got both silver and the gold vermeil and plan to mix my metals and wear them together. They weren’t supposed to launch until next week but she released them early and they are available now!

• Saving my pennies for Parker Thatch’s Jack bag. It’s big enough for all my day to day crap, laptop, mom stuff, etc… or for a travel bag. The leather looks insane and I think it’s classic to use for years to come.

As someone who has lived within a few miles of the ocean my entire life, I am no stranger to swimsuits. I spent the majority of my time between the ages of 13-24 on a beach, in bikinis. I DEFINITELY used to buy a suitcase full of new looks before vacations. But, over the years, I realized that not only was that expensive, but often I never wore the outfits again as they didn’t really translate into my everyday life back home. Wanting a more sustainable travel capsule, as well has being able to funnel those funds directly into experiences in the trip itself, I came up with some tried and true combos and a few ideas for still feeling “vacation-y” without buying all new stuff.

1. Play around with accessories. A simple scarf is a vacation hero. With one scarf you can have a fun headscarf look, can wear it as a top, can use it as a belt, give your midsection visual interest by folding it half on the diagonal and wearing it around your waist, and of course you can wear around your neck or on your bag as a bag charm. Possibilities are endless.

2. Matching sets are your friend- (preferably linen)- With sets, you have multiple outfits in the two pieces. Wear as a full set one day, wear the bottoms with a different top, then switch out the top with a different bottom. Bonus if the top is a button down you can use as a swim cover up or over another shirt on chilly nights. (and I don’t mind the wrinkles- I think they look carefree and relaxed, as vacation should. 3. Make your swimwear do double duty. I love to wear a one piece swimsuit with a pair of linen shorts or a maxi skirt. My all time favorite swim brand is Left on Friday , nothing else has compared. 5. Lastly, invest in quality. If you buy a couple new “vacation pieces” make sure they are things that will last and bring you joy for years to come. 1. A friend asked me for some options for Mother’s Day jewelry, specifically, lockets. 2. I consider myself to be “high maintenance in order to be low maintenance”. I like to do the work up front so my day to day is easy. I get my hair done once a year with “grown out” highlights, so that I can go another year before getting a touch up, I get my lashes and brows tinted once a month so I can skip mascara and brow gel on the daily, and I try to eat well, sweat, and get enough sleep so that I can look and feel my best. One of my favorite little tricks: this shower head. It’s beautiful to look at, yes, but it also works. 10. Lastly, but certainly not least, this hair pin, from a local, woman owned company, and the perfect throw-in-your-bag item to keep your hair off your neck on hot summer nights. Once you get the hang of a hair pin, you’ll never go back. Takes 6 seconds and looks utterly chic.

There’s a lot to unpack when you start discussing minimalism. Books have been written on the subject (a few of which I myself own, their unassuming spines nestled into my decidedly un-minimalistic bookshelf), there are entire instagram accounts dedicated to sparse interiors and neatly organized pantries, and lets not forget when the name Kondo became a verb (as in “I Kondo-ed my dresser yesterday”). I think most agree that minimalism, at its essence, is the preferable and more desirable when given a choice between that or its opposite. But why?

Maximalism conjures up images of helter-skelter closets, unhinged outfits, and episodes of Hoarders that we all watched with a mix of pity and horror. At this stage in the game of humanity, it’s hard to divorce our drive to be neat and tidy from that of religious roots- that is, which came first- the notion that living with less and practicing self denial leads to enlightenment or that enlightenment leads to desiring less and being happy where you are? Gluttony is considered a sin, white is the color of purity, being neat and organized are hallmarks of a successful human being…?

Of course, there are ramifications to our overstuffed wardrobes, and I’m happy to see the shift towards wanting more sustainable choices when it comes to clothing, as well as a call to support small brands. Never has there ever been a wider variety of outlets when it comes to secondhand options for everything from luxury goods to baby gear. More and more consumers are asking for transparency in the fabrics they are wearing, who made them, and the impact that the production has on the planet and its people. #outfitrepeater has been a trending hashtag on social media, and slow fashion has finally moved past homespun-feeling fibers in frumpy cuts. I see women (and men!) doing large swaths of “no-buy” or “no new” (secondhand only) periods and I’m thrilled that it’s not only being normalized but even glamorized.

Like many others, I follow Allison Bornstein and mulled over her “3 word method” that swept the internet a few years ago. But, unlike many others, I didn’t have an easy time coming up with 3 words to define my personal style. Like, to this day I still haven’t. I stressed over this… did I not know myself well enough? Was I a lost soul? Was I destined to be swept up in every mircotrend from here to eternity?? Finally I talked myself off the ledge and realized that it’s OK! I like variety, I don’t want to bump against the walls of my own style definitions. And, to be honest, even just thinking about which words I would use to describe my style helped in and of itself, made me really ponder what drew me in and asked me to stay a while.

So can you identify as a minimalist and still feel able to express yourself? Putting together outfits is, for some, a struggle, and for others, an artistic outlet. Myself, I can vacillate quite a bit. I came of age on a steady diet of paparazzi pictures splashed across US Weekly of everyone from Paris Hilton, to, (and especially) The Olsen twins. Somedays, I’m Mary Kate circa 2006, other days I’m gravitating towards an utterly chic Moosgaard sister. The style pendulum can swing and still remain within your unique expression. Speaking of MKA- I find it worth noting that their brand, The Row, notorious for a black and white palette and lack of patterns, included both bright colors and bold print in its spring ‘25 collection.

Personal style is fluid. So much depends on what phase of life you are in, what your day to day demands are, who you spend your time with, if there are offices or dress codes involved… and all of that can and does fluctuate! The “quiet luxury” movement coincided, for me, with an intersection of having young babies at home and the pandemic era that was both boring and chaotic all at once. Getting dressed was my touchstone, my self-soothing mechanism that gave me purpose and kept me feeling human, dressing in neutrals and monochromes was a balm to the frazzled state I spent so much time inhabiting as a new mother.

Over the past year we’ve watched as bag charms, brooches, eyeglass chains, and friendship bracelets have crept onto the scene. Bright reds have caught our eye and neon shades are seducing us. It seems that people are ready once again for color, adornments, and maximalist statement pieces. Can you be a maximalist in a minimalist way? I’d say sure, and it might lie in a statement earring, a head to toe monochrome look in a bold color, a hat perched just right atop a minimal outfit, or a perfect shoe in a fun pop of color. I do think it’s fully possible to fully express yourself while keeping a tight edit in your closet.

At the end of the day, it’s your comfort and confidence that stand paramount, and all the minimalism or maximalism in the world can’t change your look if you aren’t feeling it, if your shirt is itchy or you don’t like your jeans, it shows. When we feel good, we look good. And that’s one fashion rule that will never go out of style.

I bring you number 2 of 3 beauty focused newsletters I’ll be putting out recently. This one is a round up of some recent skincare standouts at friendly prices. (ICYMI my first beauty post was this one, about a device I’m loving)

I’m now part of the “mature skin” bracket that you seem to enter post turning 40. Suddenly it’s all about age spots and sun damage and wrinkles. I was just at the dermatologist on Friday and had the first spots frozen off my forearms. The doctor said I had a “surprising number of spots for someone my age”… thanks, doc. If he had seen my teenage years in Florida, pretending to surf to catch boys attention and baking my skin to a shade 5 times darker than my natural color he wouldn’t be so surprised. But I digress…

Now, I get to try my hardest to undo some of that damage. Enter C15 Super Booster- a non-stinging, non-tacky vitamin C that you can use alone or mix into your face cream. Personally I use this one morning and night because my face and chest can use all the help they can get. I used to pay over $150 for a certain brand of C and Ferulic Acid until I discovered this one with the same ingredients.

Next on my list of faves is the Weightless Body Treatment which I have been LOVING- it’s a hydrating cream I use all over and it contains 2% BHA (aka salicylic acid) that gives me the smoothest skin. I feel like I’m a little scaly and dry after the “winter” (I’m in San Diego so I use that term mildly, but it does get very dry here) and this made my skin feel like a baby. Great for legs with ingrown hairs or clogged pores, clears and smoothes, love it.

I’m a little bit of a freak with the vitamin C but I love a double dose in the form of the 5% Vitamin C Sheer Moisturizer SPF 50 I mean, come on, that really checks all the boxes. Vit C, hydrates, SPF…. one and done. I love this so much I actually bought the travel size to bring on vacation. I love that they offer travel sizes in almost all their products so you can take them with you or try before you commit to the full size.

And finally, at night I have been using this Renew Resurfacing Peptide Toner from Motif 1-2 nights a week (it’s easy, just splash some on and let it dry, no rinsing) then every other night a pump of 1% Retinol Treatment for the aforementioned wrinkles, followed by the Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer

The retinol is gentle on my sensitive skin and the barrier cream is so thick and comforting. Such a nice bedtime combo. (I got travel sizes in those too!)
