2026 IT’S TIME!

Competition is the straw that stirs the drink in the Culloty house. When a former small-college football player marries a D1 hockey star, everything becomes a race. The Culloty Family College Football Challenge is back for another season and yes, I am the defending champ. Long live the king!

Quick refresher: Both me and Lori draft 16 teams. We follow them all season, no waiver wire, no portal, we are with them for better or worse. Every week we each play 8–12 teams: 1 from each P4 conference, 2 more from BIG/Big 12 and SEC/ACC, and 2 from the G6. Take Penn State early in 2025 draft, you get to feel the PAIN of that choice each week, damn you, UCLA!

Now for the BIG 5 (well 4 this week)

The Good: For Week 0/1, the BIG opens 2026 as double-digit favorites in every contest. Well, well what is Vegas telling us? Hey Sparty, why are you only -10 vs. Toledo?

The Bad: Summer has come to an end. Back-to-school shopping is now equal to mortgage payment. Ugh.

What we learned: It’s time to settle in and enjoy the return of college football! I have 2 T.V.s position in the family room for viewing, I suggest you do the same and thank me later.

BIG Thoughts: Talking season is over, the games are being played. Let’s go, everyone!

Week 0/1 –HERE WE GO!!!

The 3 best games to watch this week BIG fans!

1. Oregon vs. Boise State

• When & How do I watch: Saturday, September 5 at 3:30 | TV: CBS

• This is comfortably the premiere matchup of the Big Ten’s opening week. Boise State has historically given power-conference teams nightmares in non-conference play, and high-powered Oregon will be tested right out of the gate. This is a sneaky playoff teaser. IF Boise is blown out that would be a crusher for a G6 bid. IF Oregon drops this one, will that cost the Ducks come playoff time since the BIG is so deep? Better question, dropping a game to the Broncos will make fans question if Danny L could ever get the Ducks past the final boss.

• FINAL: Oregon 38 Boise 17

2. Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame

• When & How do I watch: Sunday, September 6 at 7:30 p.m. | TV: NBC

• Playing on Sunday night with no NFL games to compete with means all eyes in college football will be on historic Lambeau Field which could be the final song for Coach Luke. The Irish are looking to make a statement, they know who they are and are talented at every position and cannot risk dropping a single game this year. Wisky, they are on their own personal Odyssey, lost, and unlike the poem, the hero may never return.

3. Washington vs. Washington State (The Apple Cup)

• When & How do I watch: Sunday, September 6 at 4:00 p.m. | TV: NBC

• This game is pure rivalry drama. One of the great things about conference realignment is that the Apple Cup arrives as a week 1 kickoff. Rivalry games are notoriously unpredictable, throw in that this is week 1 and chaos is in the air. What I am looking for to seeing is what Demond Williams Jr. is bringing to the table in 2026. Outside the portal drama of January, Williams threw for north of 3,000 yards and 25 TDs in 2025. I see those numbers climbing and in doing so, making the Huskies a sneaky contender for a CFB bid.

• FINAL: Washington 40 WSU 17

Honorable Mention

• UCLA at Cal (Sat, 10:30 p.m., The 4-Letter Network): An iconic late-night West Coast matchup between former Pac-12 rivals is a perfect moment for some PAC 10/12 AFTER DARK VIBES. Great way to wrap-up a Saturday.

As the BIG Turns…Summer…2026…PART II

The Great American Road Trip!

Many a visionary father has pictured the romantic notion of packing up the “Family Truckster” and venturing across the great abyss we call these United States. The trip creates memories, builds bonds, and lets the family enjoy one big slice of Americana. What could go wrong?

This past month, MY family packed into our 2018 Chevy Traverse and embarked on TWO grand adventures. First, we traveled west of the Mississippi to Fargo, North Dakota, and the famous Fargodome. Our eldest set out to compete in the largest wrestling tournament in the world, the U.S. Junior Championships, colloquially known as “Fargo.” With 7,000 to 9,000 entries every year, our 138-pounder was one of them. Our young grappler battled into Day 2 of the three-day tournament. You can imagine the beaming pride of a father watching his child perform on the national stage. It was awesome.

Trip number two was a grand two-week venture to the East Coast, featuring stops at Niagara Falls, Boston, Acadia National Park, Montreal, and Toronto. With four humans and two dogs in the car, the smells from the backseat were... something. However, the sights, history, and shared adventures with my favorite humans are memories I will always cherish.

While taking in a college football game from your living room big screen is a lot of fun, don’t overlook the time-honored tradition of the road trip. The experience extends far beyond the kickoff, into Dippin’ Dots at rest stops, hunting for local diners, and navigating open highways. Don’t overthink it: plan an adventure, hit the road, and thank me later.

Now for the BIG 5: Here are the 5 things you need to know heading into the 2026 CFB season.

• Playoff Rule Refinements: The 12-team format remains, maintaining automatic bids for P4 conference champs and a G6 representative. Notre Dame secures a spot if ranked in the top 12 of the CFP final committee rankings.

• The PAC is BACK: Following a targeted expansion into the Mountain West (Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State, San Diego State, Utah State) and the Sun Belt (Texas State), the Pac-12 rebuild is officially operational.

• NCAA Eligibility Shifts: The NCAA introduced the “5-for-5” rule, effectively ending traditional redshirting models. Additionally, the mandatory two-year transition period for FCS-to-FBS reclassifying teams (e.g., North Dakota State, Sacramento State) has been removed, making them bowl-eligible immediately in Year 1.

• SEC Schedule Diet: The SEC moves to a mandatory nine-game conference schedule. Furthermore, starting in 2027, “Cupcake Saturday” late-November FCS matchups are eliminated ahead of Rivalry Week.

• The Coaching Carousel: 33 FBS programs enter 2026 with new head coaches. The era of hiring a Kirk Ferentz and holding fast for two decades is coming to a close.

Summer Series: The Rundown

For our 2026 season preview I will look at each of the P4 Top teams (teams I feel that are not only contenders for the conference but can make the playoffs) as well as top G6 contenders. The key statistics I will be using to analyze and differentiate the contenders from the others will be the following items:

Conference Rank for Key Positions-There are 3 position groups that are the keys to success-QB-Offensive Line and Defensive Line

Win Total (WT)–Average win totals over 3 Vegas Betting Books

Conference Rank (CR)- The Average of the key Positions

Elite Talent (ET)-Players who are ranked in the top 25 (potential All Americans) special considerations to having multiple players in the same position group or a top 10 QB

Nationally Ranked Units (NRU)-Having elite skill beyond the conference level is a spot where playoff wins are made.

Strength of Schedule (SOS)- Often this can separate the good from the elite. IF you have a top 20 SOS calendar your results may look very different than a similarly talented within your same conference. For example, Michigan may have a better team this year, but a worse record when compared to their 2025 results. I have only noted if your SOS is in the top 20 toughest.

Miami: It’s easy to see why expectations are high in Coral Gables. Miami is one of only eight teams nationally boasting 8+ Elite Talent players and 4+ Nationally Ranked Units. The key to a title is “focus,” after dropping two games last year where they held superior roster talent, execution is everything.

SMU: The Mustangs fit the dark-horse profile. Their offensive foundation can carry them through a favorable schedule, but questions along the defensive line limit their ceiling beyond an initial playoff appearance.

The Rest: Clemson and Louisville possess strong roster talent, but middle-tier QB play and average offensive lines cap their conference championship trajectories.

BYU: Strong coaching, trench talent, and grit make the Cougars a prime Big 12 threat. With BYU and Texas Tech avoiding each other in the regular season, this shapes up as a likely Big 12 Championship Game matchup.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders boast line depth and elite talent across the board. However, unproven QB play could limit their potential once facing top-tier playoff competition.

The Rest: Houston brings individual high-end talent and Utah maintains its physical culture, but neither currently possesses the line play required to contend nationally.

Texas- You can make a strong argument that THIS is Sark’s most talented team he has had since arriving in Austin. However there are 2 really BIG things we need to talk about concerning the Longhorns. First, the schedule is BRUTAL. Last year Texas benefited greatly from the schedule the SEC put together, and still missed the playoffs. It was all there for them and they blew it. Why? Inconsistent play at QB. If you trust that Manning is going to be the MAN–the schedule doesn’t matter. However, his arm strength and accuracy are things I am still concerned about with QB1. With games against OSU, Tennessee and Oklahoma in the first 5 games, that is a heck of an opening slate and we should know right away if the Longhorns have championship pedigree.

Georgia- The Dawgs have the best coach in college football. Kirby has elite talent everywhere on this team. The schedule is more than manageable with 4 of their first 5 contests at home. Early contests against “giants” like Tennessee Tech, WKU, Arkansas and Vanderbilt should have Georgia ready for their showdown against Oklahoma. This is a team built for a deep run in the playoffs, and anything less than a Final 4 appearance will be a disappointment.

Oklahoma- A peg below Texas and Georgia rests the Sooners. Like Texas they have a BRUTAL schedule. In their first 5 games they go to Michigan, Georgia and Texas (neural site). Essentially, the Sooners could be OUT of the playoff race by mid-October. Finishing with Texas A&M and Missouri is no treat either. Playing that many heavyweights will test the Sooners depth. Oklahoma HAS to keep John Mateer healthy if they have ANY hopes of returning to the playoffs.

LSU- ESPN may change their logo to just a picture of Coach Kiffin. Dude is great for ratings and offensive numbers–both of which I expect to do very well in 2026. HOWEVER, how good are the Tigers? Getting Clemson, Ole Miss and Texas A&M to start 3 of your first 4 games is a heck of a litmus test. Closing November with Alabama, Texas and Tennessee will be great for ratings but really hurts their playoff chances if the stumble early. The Good news? 4 of these 6 games are home contests in Baton Rouge. So for Coach Kiffin, he is going to have to win 4 of those games to have a chance at the playoffs–if he does-watch out!

The Rest-Alabama, Texas A&M, Missouri, Tennessee and Ole Miss are all essentially the same team. Each projected to win 7-9 games, each with at least 1 of their units being nationally rated. Picking just one–I would go with Texas A&M. QB play will get better and that will separate the Aggies from the pack. Anyway you slice it, expect four SEC teams at the dance.

Oregon-Is this the year the Ducks put everything together? They will have the best QB in the conference, and have elite talent all over their roster, especially on the DL. Their schedule is especially brutal. They get a no joke opener against Boise State, have to play USC on the road and spend November going from the West Coast to the Eastern Time Zone, which includes games against Ohio State and Michigan back to back. This is as talented a team as you will find anywhere in the country, but the winds of November may be enough to derail the Ducks from a deep run. We will see.

Indiana- So the Hoosiers don’t rebuild, they reload? Sure seems that way. Coach Curt ‘Google Me’ Cignetti has the defending 16-0 National Champs primed for another run. While elite physical play on the offensive and defensive lines anchors this roster, all eyes are on the offense. Veteran TCU transfer Josh Hoover steps in to replace Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, bringing nearly 10,000 career passing yards into Cignetti’s RPO-heavy attack alongside new weapons like receiver Nick Marsh. If everything clicks, expect to see Indiana right back in the Big Ten title game and pushing for a repeat title.

Ohio State- This is another incredibly talented roster. All the ingredients are there for another run at the National Championship. What could stop the Buckeyes? Two key factors we cannot ignore. Heading into the 2026 College Football season, Ohio State have undergone significant roster turnover. The Buckeyes lost 12 total starters, eight of whom come from the defensive side of the ball. Losing Caleb Downs (I considered the best player in CFB) along with both starting CBs and 2 starting DEs could be a death nail. Second, combine that with the incredibly difficult schedule that includes Texas, Iowa, Indiana, USC, Oregon and Michigan and the Buckeyes could be flirting with missing the playoffs. The Texas game could be the measuring stick for the season.

Michigan- The Wolverines are the wildcard of the BIG. Having an adult return to running the ship will only be a major positive. However, Michigan has 2 major obstacles to overcome if they are to return to the playoffs, QB and schedule. The bus stops and starts with the play of Bryce Underwood. If he looks the part of being the former #1 recruit in the country, Michigan will win, and will win a lot. But, if he looks like last year, or worse, spring game Bryce, Coach Whittingham may turn to Tommy Carr and go full reboot. The second part is equally stressing, the schedule. The Wolves get Oklahoma, Iowa, Penn State, Indiana, Oregon and Ohio State. If Michigan has playoff hopes they have to go 4-2 over that stretch, and will have to go to Oregon and OSU, no easy task. Michigan could be a better team in 2026 and have a worse record.

The Rest- USC, Washington and Penn State all have schedules and enough talent to make a surprise run. All three teams enter the year with identical profiles: dangerous skill talent paired with serious questions in the trenches. Gifted with favorably soft schedules that allow them a runway to mask their line deficiencies, and place a 10-2 resume to the CFB playoffs.

Notre Dame- Here comes the IRISH! Elite talent is everywhere, especially at QB. Reviewing their schedule, perhaps the only game that presents a spot of concern for ND will be their trip to face Texas A&M. ND has every opportunity to run the gamut and land with the #1 seed. Will this be the year that ND lands another Natty? Wake up the echoes, this has the magical feel of 1988, will the National Championship stay in Indiana?

Boise State- Boise has the schedule and talent to win a CFB playoff berth. Also, they have pitfalls all around them. The opener with Oregon and games against Fresno and UNLV could potentially spoil Boise’s dream of a postseason. However, based on talent alone, BSU is the best G6 team this year and should be the run-away favorite to win the PAC.

JMU- The Dukes are again stacked and ready for another run at the playoffs. September will be telling for JMU, they have two important contests to navigate, both away tilts, against UNC and Liberty. If James Madison exists September undefeated, expect the playoff committee to view them as the frontrunner for the G6 spot.

UNLV- While other contenders face early-season landmines, the Rebels’ true defining stretch arrives in October. A grueling three-game gauntlet against Cal, North Dakota State, and Fresno State gives Coach Mullen a chance to show that G6 greatness lives in the desert. Even if they survive that run, Boise State looms at the end of the year, ready to derail UNLV’s playoff hopes.

The Rest-There are at least ten other G6 contenders capable of becoming being this year’s Cinderella story. But while each brings a unique narrative, the one that naturally captures the country’s heart, especially as America celebrates its 250th birthday, is Army. With elite quarterback talent and a home in the most competitive G6 conference, the Black Knights have a real opportunity to march right into the postseason.

As the BIG Turns…Summer…2026

Welcome back BIG readers!!! The long winter is now behind us all, filled with wrestling, basketball, and casseroles. Now it’s time to show off the “Rustbelt” beach bodies as summer has arrived and football is around the corner. So before that next trip to Home Depot is made, let’s go over a few things coming to this year’s edition of our weekly publication.

First off, our new format. Last season dragged along at times like we were stuck in a quagmire. Yes, the BIG is, well, TOO BIG to effectively cover. As the season carried on, the quality was akin to Michigan football. On the surface everything looked fine, but something was off. No, we didn’t have some office scandal; rather, expectations were not met. To correct this, the format moving forward will be: Our Opener ➡️ The BIG 5 Run Down ➡️ Top 3 Conference Games of the Week ➡️ Score Predictions ➡️ DONE. This will cut the fat and make the whole experience better for everyone.

Second, our summer series will take on 1 to 2 works per month (this will be our June entry) to keep everyone up-to-date on the latest in college football as we prepare for the greatness that is our beloved tribal sport. Since I too am a victim of the “Youth Industrial Sports Complex,” time is going to be a bit scarce this summer and I want to truly push out only value-add products, not just college football mind droppings.

Now for the BIG 5

• The Good: Indiana is the best team in college football. And by rule, the BIG is the best conference. Three years in a row the conference has crowned the champion, from three different teams, all playing different styles. Long live the King (The BIG), may his reign be long!

• The Bad: The NCAA has effectively been neutered. The latest court ruling from Texas regarding Texas Tech’s QB Brendan Sorsby now being eligible, despite doing his best Pete Rose impersonation and gambling on his own team, is beyond mind-boggling. This is yet again another elbow dropped on the once-powerful organization. At this point, the path forward for all sports is simple: come together, get some government protections, and re-invent the idea of college sports. The current way is now over, and a renaissance is required.

• What Did We Learn: The NCAA has learned a valuable lesson from the NFL, there is no off-season. The drama involving the playoff format has dominated the talking heads, and I believe this is a value-add. Wherever the bracket size ends up, finding content to discuss should remain a priority for the power brokers of the sport.

• Best Matchups in the BIG: The kickoff to the 2026 season will feature a number of fun matchups, but three will be absolute appointment T.V.

• Oregon vs. Boise State (Week 1): Who could forget this classic from 2009? We bring that back along with the BIG vs. PAC energy, here we go!

• Oklahoma at Michigan (Week 2): How will the new era of Michigan football look? This banger in Ann Arbor will tell us if Michigan has the ability to bring the forward pass into their offense, and if they are a true contender (in the BIG and CFP) or back in rebuild mode.

• Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame (Week 2): Can Coach Luke be saved in Whisky? This could very well be Fickell’s “Waterloo” moment or his ultimate comeback. I am putting all of the Badgers’ chips in the middle for this one; this game is the season.

• BIG Thoughts: The future of college athletics hinges on meaningful reform and government oversight. Government oversight, or more appropriately, meaningful antitrust exemption status (like what MLB or the NFL enjoy), is of paramount importance. The NCAA has allowed the courts to completely usurp its authority and leadership. To right this path, losses in court have to be a thing of the past. Yes, athletes need guidance and they deserve pay. However, continuing down this path only ensures that the market will shrink as schools will no longer be able to afford to field teams OR will do so at the expense of Olympic sports. Reform is needed, and with that, the BIG and SEC need to operate in the best interests of ALL, or we will see the death of the “Golden Goose.”

Summer Series: The Playoffs

Let’s jump right into the deep end of the pool and tackle this issue. However, first, let’s revisit some history to bring some common understanding and context to my thinking.

China. For centuries, China viewed itself as the “Middle Kingdom”the unquestioned center of civilization, confident in the permanence of its total dominance. Yet it suffered what it self-identified as the Century of Humiliation (1839–1949). Here, internal divisions, regional power struggles, and an inability to adapt to changing realities left the once-powerful empire vulnerable to decline. The lesson was clear: systems built on exclusion and sustained by entrenched elites can become fragile when they resist reform.

College football now faces a similar moment. For decades, a small collection of power conferences (really a few choice teams) functioned as the sport’s ruling class, with the BCS and early playoff formats reinforcing the belief that only a select few programs deserved a meaningful path to a national championship.

But growing dissatisfaction among excluded programs and conferences has exposed the limitations of that model. Further, the era of the “Super Team” is now over, so the dated argument calling for the return of a 2- or even 4-team model is antiquated. Rather, a 24-team playoff would not only represent a form of modernization, it would bring about a rebirth and rebranding of the sport. (Yes, I supported another model, but I think our path forward is with the 24-team model, not what I would LOVE)

Here are the key arguments supporting the 24-team model. Individually they have faults, but viewed in totality, they are our way forward:

1. Death of the Bowl System & Expansion of Quality Teams

The age of yesterday, where a one-game showcase was seen as a success and 1–2 teams were miles ahead of the field, is now over. With the existence of NIL and the transfer portal, water has found its level in CFB, showing that 20+ teams each year are capable of grabbing the title. Take the 2025–26 season as proof: we crowned a first-time champion in Indiana, a team that went 16-0 just a year after the sport saw Ohio State take the crown. Further, each of those playoffs brought of 8 different teams in the semi-finals! The era of a static 2-team dominance is dead. This springs the opportunity for unity in CFB. The archaic nature that we all accepted, the bowl system, has been read its last rites. Bowl season we all once loved, has transformed into an opt-out tracker, with major programs (including Notre Dame, Kansas State, and Iowa State) outright declining bowl bids last cycle, forcing 5-7 teams (7 of them) to fill the gaps. The BIG, ACC, and Big 12 are all in favor of an expanded model to provide a wider definition of postseason success and phase out conference championship games, which coaches argue cause unnecessary wear-and-tear. The only caveat I would encourage is that Strength of Schedule (SOS) be heavily factored into the selection process to ensure the heavyweights are playing each other on the regular.

2. Access, Access, Access

The weekly ESPN selection show used to be a complete joke. Under the current 12-team layout, the 13-member selection committee uses a grueling 7-round secret ballot system that still leaves elite 10-win teams on the cutting room floor. With 24 teams in the field, the power conferences can be guaranteed selections for their champions, alongside the two highest-rated G6 squads/independents. This leaves 18 at-large selections to ensure the absolute best are there, giving the fans fantastic, meaningful games to enjoy all through December and ending by the first week of January.

3. Revenue

Early rounds (especially on campus) will create electric atmospheres similar to March Madness. This will generate significantly more TV revenue, ticket sales, and fan engagement. ESPN’s current CFP broadcast rights deal is worth $7.8 billion over six seasons, but it heavily concentrates revenue at the very top. According to Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti, shifting these early-round games directly to campus stadiums generates upwards of $6 million per game in pure ticket sales and localized stadium receipts. Who wouldn’t love a night playoff game at Penn State in December as they face a fellow blueblood like Texas? Pump that into my veins, I can already “feel” the stadium pulse!

Happy New Year BIG Readers!

Yes, January 1st has long past, but I want to make sure everyone is welcomed to the party. The party you ask? Well, the celebration another glorious football season of course. It is time to turn our attention towards the next coronation and crown a new “Champion of College Football.”

However, before we bring our total attention to the game, I would like to share some thoughts on my suggested “tweaks” to our current format and how to make this A++ awesome. Without further ado, here are my proposed changes to make CFB and the CFB playoffs even better:

1. Start the season a week earlier-National Championship Game Saturday 8 PM-Wildcard weekend. Or a better date, before the transfer portal opens, January 1st has a nice ring to it!

2. Conference organization. Mandate not only all Super Conferences (P4) to play 9 conference games but NO FCS squads.

3. Conference organization Part II. Mandate all Super Conferences to have an organized format. 10 conference schools-you play everyone-we are good! 12-14 conference schools-2 divisions. 16+ PODS. People like order and for things to make sense. With our current “OPEN” format there is no order.

4. Organization Example. For the BIG, I would do the following: POD 1 (USC-UCLA-UW-OU) POD 2 (Neb, Whisky, Iowa, Minny, Ill) POD 3 (NW, MI, OSU, Indiana-PU) POD 4 (PSU-Maryland-Rutgers-MSU)-Cross-over POD 1 with POD 2 and POD 3 with POD 4 in odd years and POD 1 and POD 3 and POD 2 and POD 4 in even years. The BIG can make match-ups with their last conference game as they see fit.

5. POD Crossover Champions play in the Rose Bowl for the Conference Title. I doubt this happens and TV Execs like the OPEN scheduling match-up ideas.

6. The 12 Team format remains with some small changes. First 2 rounds are on campus. Seeding is the best 12 teams regardless of conference champions. SOS will favor playing MORE P4 teams and will punish teams for scheduling G5 and FCS teams. I am a realist however, and see 16+ in our future.

7. #1 seed plays the lowest seed. Reseeding like the NFL each round.

8. Big Outlets Only for Playoff Games. Playoff games will be played on FOX-CBS-NBC-ABC.

9. The Semi-final games are played at the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl.

10. The National Championship Game will always be played at the Rose Bowl.

1. The Good: The Ole Miss vs Miami game was just a fantastic contest. Back and forth, drama and a last second heave to the endzone, wow! It was an awesome game and something the sport should be celebrating.

2. The Bad: Well, the SEC is really crying in their beer right now. For the 3rd straight year the league will go without playing for a Natty. Pick your reason for the shift, but the center of the CFB universe is no longer located in Dixieland.

3. What did we learn: Indiana is really, Really, REALLY GOOD. The games are a display of dominance rather than on contest.

4. Best Matchup for the week: The National Championship Game

5. BIG Thoughts: Indiana is a game away from football immortality. As a child of the 80s and 90s I would have NEVER guessed that Indiana would win a football National Championship before the basketball squad grabbed another over a nearly 40 year stretch (Indiana last won in March 1987), but here we are.

• Miami has arrived as the ultimate underdog story. The No. 10 seed Hurricanes clawed their way through the bracket as the last at-large team in, silencing critics with gritty wins. Playing on their home field at Hard Rock Stadium turns this into a “full circle” moment for Miami natives on the roster and a massive home-field advantage in a neutral-site final. Will we see the Canes and new mascot Michael Irvin go BTA on Indiana?
• The hometown factor looms large. Indiana’s Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza hail from the Miami area, making this a personal reckoning. Miami’s defense will need to contain Indiana’s high-octane offense. The real question remains, can the Canes get their playmakers loose against such a good defense that the Hoosiers have?

Storyline
Indiana was a nice story in 2024, but most believed they were not a real contender. Yet here they are, Indiana is 15-0, dismantling foes, and one win from immortality. The Hoosiers don’t just win; they dominate with precision and poise, absorbing pressure and turning it into control. Ask Oregon, they got steamrolled 56-22 in the semis or Bama who was beaten in the Rose Bowl by 30. Now Cignetti’s crew faces a Miami team that’s riding momentum, playing in their own backyard. Anyone else picking up “Hollywood” story vibes?

This is the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. BIG Football (now Indiana) has become College Football’s new standard and built for moments like this. All season Indiana has won every game with the same formula: control the trenches, dictate tempo, and finish strong.

Miami, though? They’re dangerous when the lights are brightest. Mario Cristobal’s Hurricanes have turned doubt into fuel all season, and now they get the home crowd, familiar turf, and a chance to make history as the lowest seed to claim it all.

There’s a familiar chill in the air, and no it’s not just the weather. It’s the moment in the season when narratives harden, excuses evaporate like your breath in the winter air, and margins shrink to a single possession. This is the part of the CFB calendar where reputations are made and college football folklore is cemented.

The conference has officially entered its sorting phase. Playoff contenders have now been narrowed to 4. Teams are learning fast. This part of the calendar does not care about your past résumés, your recruiting rankings, or what conference you used to dominate. Here, against the season’s final boss, a football is a stress test is on full display. Words are either truths or siren songs. Everyone from coordinators, quarterbacks, and coaches who swear they “want this moment” right up until the fourth quarter, and the moment is present.

This week’s slate feels more like a referendum on who truly is the dominate conference in college football. The pretenders are packing away their gear for the winter, the few are left fighting for eternal football legacy.

1. The Good: The BIG saw 2 of its 3 squads advance and in dominant fashion. Indiana’s 38-3 blistering of Alabama has the 4-Letter Network and Paul Finebaum questioning their life decisions.

2. The Bad: Ohio State BLEW IT! The defending national champions could not block Miami. The Buckeyes struggled on offense the entire game mustering only 14 points in route to a double digit loss to the Hurricanes.

3. What did we learn: Oregon’s defense showed up against Texas Tech. The Ducks forced 4 turnovers in route to their 23 point shutout victory.

4. Best Matchup for the week: Are you kidding? Oregon vs Indiana is the National Title game, just being played a round early.

5. BIG Thoughts: All signs right now point to the BIG bring home a 3rd Natty in 3 seasons. Will the SEC loss its mind if that happens???

• Indiana remains the standard-bearer. Undefeated, unflinching, and unbothered by the noise, the Hoosiers enter the semifinal as the No. 1 seed and a slight favorite. This isn’t about proving they belong anymore, it’s about making history.

• Oregon has arrived. The Ducks didn’t tiptoe into the playoffs; they kicked the door down. Oregon looks every bit like a program built for this moment: speed on the edges, violence up front, and a roster comfortable playing fast in big spaces.

• The rematch factor matters. Indiana beat Oregon 30–20 on October 11 in Eugene, controlling the game late. That result hangs over this matchup, proof Indiana can win it, and motivation Oregon won’t need to manufacture.

• Neutral site, Southern stage. A BIG Ten playoff game in Atlanta feels almost wrong, and that’s what makes it compelling. Indoors, fast track, prime time. This one is built for pace, and a whole lot of pressure.

Storyline

This was supposed to be a future problem. Instead, it’s a January reckoning.

Indiana didn’t flinch the first time. In October, they absorbed Oregon’s speed, dictated terms in the second half, and walked out with a 30–20 win that quietly reshaped the conference race. That wasn’t chaos. That was control.

Now they have to do it again with everything amplified. I will say the quiet part out loud, This is the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.

Curt Cignetti’s Hoosiers are no longer College Football’s darling, they are becoming the standard. They’re methodical, physical, and mentally unyielding. Fourteen games, fourteen wins, and a growing sense that this program doesn’t rise to moments, it creates them (ask Bama).

Oregon, however, is dangerous in the rematch.

Dan Lanning’s Ducks live in the margins. All season this team has discovered its deltas and then moved to correct, adjust, and come back sharper each week. This version of Oregon is faster, more explosive, and playing with the freedom of a team that believes the pressure belongs entirely to the Hoosiers.

For Indiana, this is about confirmation.
Win again, and the Cignetti mad men are a win away from football immorality.

For Oregon, this is about correction.
Fix what failed in October, flip the script, and turn Atlanta into a statement on the way to a National Title.

Cinderella stories are still dancing, blue bloods are on upset watch, and every fan base is convinced the committee either finally got it right or completely broke the sport. There is no middle ground in December.

This is the week where depth gets exposed, coaching gets magnified, and one bad quarter can undo four months of work. The BIG is front and center again not just as a participant, but as a standard-bearer, defending champions and with the odds on favorites to win it all. Style points no longer matter at this point in the season, simply survival does.

Buckle up. The field is smaller, the stakes are higher, and as always…

1. The Good: The BIG remains undefeated—the SEC—not so much as Texas A&M and Oklahoma both were bounced from the bracket.

2. The Bad: JMU and Tulane were completely outgunned. I am all for access—you have to have access—but this was clearly as mistake by the committee and it will cost some worthy G6 team in years to come.

3. What did we learn: Oregon can score but do they have the defense to win it all? Probably not. The SEC is looking like it maybe a paper tiger, will Georgia save the conference?

4. Best Matchup for the week: Call me sentimental but Alabama vs Indiana in the Rose Bowl will be appointment viewing for me.

5. BIG Thoughts: Can the BIG send 3 to the round of 4? All 3 are favored. We shall see. Tony P has to be LOVING life!

• Alabama is still Alabama, but this is not the Death Star version. Three losses, a road-heavy résumé, and a roster in transition yet here they are again, lurking in January.

• TV wins AGAIN… Pick a storyline BIG Ten vs SEC or another epic battle at the ROSE BOWL. The last time TV execs were this excited it was Michigan vs Alabama and that game was an instant classic…get your popcorn ready!!!

Storyline

This is the moment college football never saw coming and now can’t look away.

Indiana didn’t sneak into this playoff. They didn’t benefit from chaos. They didn’t backdoor their way through a soft bracket. The Hoosiers went 13-0, handled business weekly, and earned the #1 seed outright. Curt Cignetti’s program has moved from punchline to power in under two seasons, and now stands are a game away from the the round of 4.

But here’s the problem: Alabama doesn’t walk away quietly.

Nick Saban may no longer be stalking the sideline, but the muscle memory remains. The Tide have made a living out of ruining feel-good stories, and they enter this game loose, physical, and dangerous exactly the kind of team no unbeaten wants to see in the playoffs, just ask Oklahoma.

For Indiana, this is about validation. Can they play from ahead? Can they handle the weight of being the hunted? Can they finish?

One program is chasing history.
The other is defending its still a program that is among the elite.

And on New Year’s Day, under the San Gabriel Mountains, college football finds out whether the future has officially arrived or if the past still has one more chapter to write.

• Miami is officially “back”not in hype, but in substance. The Hurricanes just walked into SEC territory and took down an a 11 winTexas A&M Aggies squad.

• Ryan Day has stated he will be calling the Offense for this playoff run. Will we see Ohio State pushing the ball down field and bringing back up-tempo attacks on their opponents? This will be interesting. What is more interesting will be how Miami plans to attack the top-rated Buckeye defense.

Storyline

This game is about identity.

For Ryan Day, this is a legacy game. Win, and Ohio State moves one step closer to validating a recalibrated playoff approach and will cement his place among the greats of the game like Saban and Meyer. Lose? Could the noise around Columbus again return questioning if Day? Back to back losses really don’t play well in C-Bus.

For Miami, this is a resurrection moment. A win here doesn’t just punch a semifinal ticket it announces that the U is done chasing ghosts and ready to shape the future. People have questioned Miami all year, last week’s win has got the attention of everyone. Is da “U” ready for its 3rd act of greatness or is this another false flag?

One program is protecting its status.
The other is trying to reclaim it.

On New Year’s Eve, As the BIG Turns, college football will decide whether order holds or chaos wins the night.

• Oregon is battle-tested in big moments. The Ducks’ playoff scars from last season have hardened a roster built for tempo, spacing, and late-game execution. Dante Moore is playing QB as well as anyone in the country.

• Texas Tech is the ultimate disruptor. The Red Raiders arrive with nothing resembling fear, leaning into pace, aggression, and the belief that they can score with anyone in the country. Behran Morton has played at an elite level with a 67% completion rate and has cut down his interceptions in half from 2024.

Storyline

This is the game the expanded playoff promised.

Many in the media only look to the SEC or the BIG as the location of legitimate contenders. This is the reason we have a PLAYOFF to decide the championship. Politics should not decide Champions-the games should. Texas Tech’s rise from Big 12 afterthought to national contender has been fueled by belief and volume more plays, more pressure, more stress on opposing defenses. They want the game loud, fast, and uncomfortable. If this turns into a scoreboard race, Tech is perfectly content living on the edge.

Oregon, however, plays chaos with a governor. The Ducks thrive in space but understand when to slow the game, steal a possession, and finish drives. That balance speed with restraint is what makes Oregon dangerous in January. The question remains, which team has the defense to make the other blink?

The Case for Die Hard as a Thanksgiving Movie

Every year, the same tired argument pops up: Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?
Wrong question.

The correct take, the only take is this:

Die Hard is a Thanksgiving movie hiding in plain sight.

And yes, I brought receipts.

Exhibit A: The Football Doesn’t Lie

In Die Hard, a TV plays in the background while the “security guard” (yes, the Huey Lewis look-alike henchman) watches Notre Dame vs. USC. The announcer notes Notre Dame leading 7–0 after the first quarter.

That game was played on November 26, 1988—the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Let’s be serious:

• College football does not play marquee rivalry games (regular season) on Christmas Eve

• ND vs USC is a Thanksgiving weekend staple, or at least it was until conference expansion

• Football on TV while chaos unfolds? That’s Thanksgiving DNA

The timeline fits. Christmas is just set dressing.

Exhibit B: The Vibes Are All Wrong for Christmas

Nothing about Die Hard feels like Christmas joy:

• John McClane flies cross-country to reunite with family: Thanksgiving travel nightmare we have all experienced at least one time in our lives.

• Awkward reunion with unresolved tension: Thanksgiving classic, come on Uncle Tom, let’s chat about politics.

• Stuck in a building with people you don’t really want to be with: Thanksgiving is undefeated here, nothing like that first holiday with the person you are dating bring you home for a big helping of awkward.

• Barefoot, bleeding, exhausted, just trying to survive: that’s not Christmas cheer, that’s turkey-day endurance. If you want to counter with a Clark W. Griswold story, I will allow it.

This isn’t Home Alone.
This is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles…with machine guns.

Compare the Thanksgiving Canon

• Planes, Trains and Automobiles = travel hell

• Dutch = dysfunctional family dynamics

• Die Hard = “I just want to get home to my family and everything is going wrong”

The Christmas elements? Window dressing. This is akin to saying Moby Dick is a fishing story.

Yippee-ki-yay, and Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays.

One of the grand traditions of college football is the annual Army vs Navy game. It is marks the end of the college football regular season and an annual right of passage. Call me sentimental, but it is always something I look forward to taking in this game as a fan and as an American. The tradition, the pride, the fact that these are our future leaders of the free world taking part in a kid’s game has always had a special place in my heart and I have loved watching this annual event.

However, this game was different. Don’t get me wrong, the contest was fantastic, in fact it was a 1 point, come from behind victory by Navy. It had everything a great game should have and seeing the teams at the end singing is always special. No, what had me bothered was it wasn’t the ONLY college football game played Saturday. Years prior, no other FBS game was played on this once sacred date, one small way the college football world acknowledged this very special moment. Yet this season, after the CBS broadcast had ended, the LA Bowl took place on some other channel. A “lunatic fringe” of 20 thousand people (I belief that is inflated) watched Boise take on Washington. What are we doing here???

If college football loses its way and falls to horse-racing or boxing levels of interest, little moments like we witnessed on Saturday will be why. Growth has to happen or your sport will die, I get that idea. However, if you lose yourself in the process, the powers that be will be just “Thanos” and what did it cost you Thanos…EVERYTHING.

Now for the BIG 5

1. The Good: Congratulations to Indiana and Fernando Mendoza for winning the 2025 Heisman. I would have never guessed in my life-time that the Hoosiers would have BOTH a undefeated conference winning season and a Heisman Trophy winner—Kudos.

2. The Bad: Diego Pavia, QB Vanderbilt. In what should have been a moment of pride for the Commodores came with a LOT of cringe. Dude somehow transformed into “Partytime Johnny Manziel” after the Heisman ceremony in NYC—yikes.

3. What did we learn: Michigan has a PR problem. Coach Moore was fired this week for-questionable decisions he made outside the football buildings. This is a moment for Michigan to place an era behind it. In basketball, after the scandal surrounding the Fab 5, this took place when Michigan hired John Beilein. Can they find their Beilein for football?

4. Best Matchup for the week: In the BIG there truly is only one match-up that matters, Oregon vs JMU, CFB playoffs round 1. Here we go!

5. BIG Thoughts: The College Football Playoffs begin Friday. Can the BIG make it 3 Natty’s in a row???

Key Notes & Stuff: James Madison is led on offense by Dual-Threat QB Alonza Barnett III (2,533 yards at 60% completion rate), and star RB Wayne Knight (1,263 yards 6.6 ypc). The Dukes have a pair of dynamic WRs in Landon Ellis and Jaylan Sanchez. They are an RPO heavy run centered offense with 60/40 run to pass splits.

Oregon will be led by QB Dante Moore (2,733 yards at 72.5% completion rate), explosive runner Noah Whittington (774 yards 6.9 ypc) and receivers Malik Benson and Kenyon Sadiq. There are questions on Sadiq’s health to consider.

Storyline: Autzen is as difficult an environment to navigate as any in college football. On top of that, JMU will be traveling across the country to meet this challenge. The classic David vs. Goliath match-up is a great story but, it won’t be great television. The Dukes are a HUGE RPO team. In the Sun Belt Conference they are the team that runs with precision and has the talent advantage. However, against Troy they looked very “ordinary.” Further their Out of Conference slate gives me pause. It has a 4-point victory over Washington State (6-6) at home on it to go along with a 14-point loss to Louisville (8-4).

Meanwhile, the Ducks are simply the better team. Over the last two seasons they have lost 2 games, one to Ohio State in last year’s playoffs and a 10 point loss to Indiana. They are an elite national contender. They will be able to overwhelm JMU with their talent and speed and weaponize it to neutralize the Duke’s offensive attack. As long as Oregon doesn’t commit turnovers, this could be over by halftime.

Prediction: Oregon 42 JMU 13

A “New” System = Same Controversy

The 2014 football season marked the end of the BCS era 2-team ear and the dawn of the 4-team College Football Playoff, giving fans everything they could hope for: controversy, heartbreak, and unforgettable games. The BIG 12 made headlines when it failed to crown a champion, leaving 11-1 TCU and 11-1 Baylor out of the playoff entirely to the outrage of the college football world. When the games finally tipped off, Ohio State shocked the world beating favorite Alabama with a back-up QB 42-35, while Oregon dismantled defending champs Florida State 59-20. Everyone expected Chip Kelly’s high-powered Ducks to dominate in the championship, but Ohio State shut them down 42-20. Under the old BCS rankings Alabama would have faced Oregon to decide the national championship. Defending National Champion FSU would have been out and Ohio State would have been relegated to play replacement Arizona in the Rose Bowl. Critics pointed out how the 4-team Playoff brought balance and fairness to the sport. This was the kick-off of a new era of College Football.

Fast forward to 2025, and we are now in the first full 12-team playoff. Controversy is again the head of conversation. Notre Dame was is left out entirely after winning 10 straight. The ACC champion was passed over as well, and BYU saw losing its conference title game the final straw to its potential run. Meanwhile, two non-Power 4 programs, Tulane and James Madison, have punched their tickets, adding even more fuel to the fire. Does Cinderella belong with the “Big Boys?” Ohio State, Georgia, and the rest of the traditional powers are in, but many are shaking their heads at what they see: chaos, lost opportunity, and a system that feels broken.

Fixing the 12-Team College Football Playoff System

The 12-team playoff was supposed to solve the issues of the 4-team era: more access, fewer snubs, and a clearer path for Group of 5 teams. Yet, 2025 has shown that controversy is far from gone.

That quote sums up college football’s identity crisis.

For decades, nostalgia has shaped how we crown a champion. The powers that be somehow tried to “Frankenstein” the old Bowl system with the new playoff format. In placing their efforts in the wrong space they lost their way. Often forgetting regional rivalries were everything, and further that, people liked the old system because it made sense. You won the Big 10, you go to the Rose Bowl. You win the SEC, you go to the Sugar Bowl. It gave us memorable moments, sure. But it also gave us split titles, weak schedules, and playoff snubs.

We’ve evolved from that era first with the BCS, then the 4-team CFP. Progress, yes. But still broken.

Now, with playoff expansion, college football faces a defining choice:
Do we cling to comforting tradition or build a better, fairer future?

It is time we to step into a NEW future. We can no longer attempt to serve 2 different systems. Blame whatever you like, this mess has to do with people not wanting to make decisions and cling to aspects of the past that are GONE and not coming back.

1. Automatic Qualifiers for All Champions: Every Power Conference champion and top-ranked Group of 5 team should automatically qualify. Title games will have the 2 highest ranked BCS teams (heavy reward to SOS) from each conference as their representative.

   The Computer is needed to remove the humans from the room with their individual/conference/network agendas. Show me the data!

2. Clearer Seeding Rules: Eliminate subjective bias; base matchups strictly on rankings and performance metrics. Further, NFL reseeding should be in the playoffs for all rounds. Higher seeds should have the easiest path.

3. Playoff Transparency: Clear thresholds must be established for making the field.

4. Balanced Scheduling Incentives: Encourage strong non-conference games for all programs to prove strength of schedule. SOS has to be a metric and one that values play premium teams.

• Note: Based off of playoff performances we will provide readjustments for the AQs. So, the Big 12 could earn the 4 AQs and the SEC could be relegated to 2.5.

Playoffs Begin: Seeding & Format

The 12-team playoff was supposed to fix college football’s broken system but as 2025 shows, fans still say: “It’s broken!” With smart tweaks, the CFP can truly reward excellence while still including the Cinderella stories fans love.

We will see if the “Smart People” in the room can get this right.

The BIG 10 2025 Season Report Card

Thanksgiving leftovers aside, it’s time to reflect on the 2025 season and see where all 18 teams stand heading into 2026.

As we loosen our belts and digest the wins and losses of the past months, the results are in. The regular season is complete, and it’s time for the BIG 10 Report Card evaluating every team’s performance and looking ahead to next season.

Tier One: Elite Teams Capable of Winning the National Championship

Ohio State – The Buckeyes are the nation’s most complete team. From WRs to QB to OL and RB, the offense is elite. The defense can match up with anyone in the country. Only questionable coaching decisions could hold them back. OSU, with this playoff field, this is your moment.
Grade: A+

Indiana – Coach “Google Me” has the pieces for a BIG title run: talented roster, strong defense, explosive skill players. Inconsistency remains the hurdle. Can they navigate the final stretch without a head-scratcher loss? The potential is undeniable.
Grade: A

Tier Two: Strong Teams, Not Quite Elite

Oregon – Talent? Yes. Playing at their 2024 level? Mixed. After a tough home loss to Indiana, the Ducks still have a playoff-worthy roster. But any team with a disciplined defense can exploit weaknesses. Momentum will be key.
Grade: A-

Tier Three: Bowling Teams

USC – Coach Riley continues to impress against mid-tier opponents, but the Trojans lack the consistent line play to compete at the highest level. Winning a playoff game is likely their ceiling at the current projections.
Grade: B

Iowa – Coach Kurt has crafted a gritty, physical, discipline team for 2 plus decades. Near 10-win potential, but the real test is in the bowl game. Are they ready to face top-tier opponents? A couple of breaks go their way, and the Hawkeyes would be in the playoffs.
Grade: B

Michigan – A 9-3 record doesn’t seem too bad, until you see its full of cupcakes. Moore has to have a “coming to Jesus” meeting and figure out why Big Blue is no longer physically dominating and disciplined. If he can do that, Michigan is primed to contend in 2026.

Washington – Showed flashes at times of being consistent, disciplined, and fielding a top-level defense. However, never could consistently put it all together. Does Jeb stay?
Grade: B-

Illinois – Preseason expectations came up bust, as a playoff spot was predicted by many. Now with a roster that will be hit hard by graduation sustainability remains a question. Grade: C+

Minnesota – Feisty 7-5 team. How long will Coach PJ stay in a tough program amid NIL pressures?
Grade: C+

Penn State – 6-6 after the coaching upheaval is quite remarkable. Never recovered from the early season loss to Oregon. Young talent may be poached; coaching stability is critical. Who is next for the Big Chair in Happy Valley?
Grade: C

Nebraska – Finished 7-5; 4-5 in conference. Overloaded QB play and coaching missteps left promise unfulfilled. Does Raiola stay in Lincoln?
Grade: C-

Northwestern – For the Cats, a BIG season finishing 6-6 often feels like a win. What makes this one hurt more? Northwestern easily could have been 8-4 this year. At least they have a new stadium to look forward to playing in next season.
Grade: C-

Tier Four: Teams Missing a Key Element

Wisconsin – Rock bottom? Restoring traditional power could revive program; failure could haunt for years. Beating Washington and Illinois has brought HOPE to the fans of Whisky.
Grade: D

Rutgers – Brought a knife to a gunfight all season. Bowl contention sporadic at best. NIL may determine survival. Is 7-5 their forever ceiling?
Grade: D

Tier Five: Dumpster Fire / Total Rebuild

UCLA – First team in the BIG to fire their Head Coach. Then pulled off some of the biggest upsets in the conference before limping into the finish. Where will Bruin ball be in 2026? The next hire will be HUGE.
Grade: D

Michigan State – Coach Smith is now gone. With Coach Fitz now at the realm there is new hope for the Spartans, but will boosters and NIL support must match ambition? 2026 is pivotal.
Grade: D

Maryland – Coach Mike’s tenure leaves questions about the program’s path forward. The Turtles did not win a game after September. Talent gaps are red flags. Leadership change is likely necessary if there is any hope in College Park.
Grade: D-

Purdue – Ended season with 56-3 loss to Indiana. Only one win over a FBS team. This has to be rock bottom right?

As the BIG Turns… Week 14…2025

The Week of THE GAME has arrived once again. Michigan vs. Ohio State. The center of the college football universe. And fittingly, it all lands on Thanksgiving Week, the annual trilogy of Football, Family, and Food.

But this year’s showdown is different. The sport has shifted, the BIG has expanded, NIL money flows like gravy on mashed potatoes, and yet somehow we’ve ended up right back in the same familiar place: Michigan and Ohio State staring each other down with everything on the line.

Two giants of college football. Two playoff hopefuls. Two fanbases who have spent 51 weeks convincing themselves the other is overrated. The path to the BIG Championship still runs through Ann Arbor, and Week 14 once again feels like Judgment Day.

The winner punches their ticket to College Football Playoff and claims bragging rights they will use like a drumstick banging their superiority. The loser, well, they get to sit in the cold, stale leftovers of another year’s disappointment. The loser will be relegated to arguing on-line with “Ohio Bro” or “Swanky Wolverine” on how they were cheated, or next year will be different or some other whinney excuse.

All season long we’ve been building to this. Every blowout, every misstep, every injury scare, every “is this the year?”… it all funnels into one Saturday afternoon in late November.

Now for the BIG 5

1. The Good: Ohio State is playing as well as any team in America. At this point, the only real question is whether this roster even has a weakness because no one has found one yet.

2. The Bad: Plenty of candidates, but Sparty takes the honors. Michigan State has been a Big Ten member since 1953, and the last time they went winless in conference play was 1958. A loss to Maryland ends that streak and officially marks rock bottom for Spartan football.

3. What did we learn: Maybe you really can’t go home, Coach Brett. Bielema’s Illini managed to make Wisconsin look competent and how do you lose by three scores to this version of the Badgers and still sit at 7–4? Stunning.

4. Best Matchup for week 14: THE GAME. Nothing more needs to be said.

5. BIG Thoughts: The Big Ten is poised to send 3–4 teams to the College Football Playoff. Indiana and Ohio State are locks no matter what happens Saturday. Oregon still needs to take care of business against Washington to secure its spot, and Michigan has an outside chance especially if they knock off the No. 1 team in the nation. Wild times in the BIG.

Why This Game Matters

This isn’t just another rivalry, this is The Game. Ohio State enters unbeaten and loaded with expectations after winning the Natty last year. But Michigan has beaten them four straight times, and once again, the stakes are historic for OSU coach Ryan Day. A loss here doesn’t just threaten playoff positioning, it could seriously shake the Buckeyes ability to make a run in 2025.

Positional Breakdown & Key Advantages Ohio State vs Michigan

Quarterback & Passing Game

• Ohio State: Julian Sayin remains the driving force. He’s shown elite accuracy and poise, and will rely heavily on his elite WR corp to do their magic in Ann Arbor.

• Michigan: Bryce Underwood, a former #1 national recruit has provided some stability for Michigan. He’s thrown for 2,166 yards this season, and while Michigan’s passing offense isn’t the flashiest, Underwood’s reliability is a strength. Bottom line, he is 9-2 as the starting QB as a true freshman.

WR / TE Targets:

• Ohio State:

  • Jeremiah Smith — He’s having a monster 2025. Smith has put up 69 receptions for 902 yards and 10 touchdowns so far.

  • Carnell Tate — Also elite, he’s collected 39 catches for 711 yards and 7 TDs. In most other programs he is the clear WR1.

  • Tight Ends: Purdue transfer Max Klare gives Sayin a reliable third down chain-mover. He is especially talented at intermediate routes and red-zone routes. At 6 ‘5, 245 Klare is a match-up problem for any defense.
    

• Michigan:

  • Michigan’s receiving corps doesn’t have a dominant “#1” star like OSU, but Underwood is leaning hard on Andrew Marsh and tight end Marlin Klein, especially in short-to-intermediate zones when they need to move the chains. Marsh has caught 37 passes for 565 yards this season (15.3 avg) with two touchdowns. Klein, meanwhile, has chipped in 16 receptions for 172 yards

Injury Watch (OSU):

• Smith and Tate: Both are dealing with injury concerns. Their potential absence or limited usage would be a massive hit to OSU’s passing attack. That said, I expect both to be playing and playing at a high level.

Edge: Ohio State — If healthy, their receiving duo gives Sayin an explosive and trustworthy group. Ohio State has 2 WRs that could be playing in the NFL right now, and that has to be keeping Michigan DC Wink Martindale up late trying to figure out a way to combat t

Running Game

• Ohio State: Bo Jackson (yes, that name carries weight) leads the backfield with 835 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns this season.

• Michigan: Jordan Marshall is their workhorse, averaging 5.9 yards per carry and he’s hit 6.1 YPC in bursts. That said, Marshall missed the Maryland game, and with Justice Hayes unavailable, Michigan’s depth may be tested.

Edge: Slight toss-up towards Michigan, but it’s fragile. If they stay healthy, their ground game can control the tempo. If not, OSU can exploit. Time of possession will be a HUGE factor in the Michigan gameplan, controlling the run game is a must for a Michigan win.

Offensive Line vs. Defensive Front Seven

• Michigan Defense:

  • Ernest Hausmann anchors the linebacker corps; he’s a veteran with leadership and instincts. He did not travel to Maryland for their contest against the turtles. Will he be in the line-up for the finale?

  • Jaishawn Barham adds versatility. He has 31 tackles and 4 sacks on the season. Being able to line him up at LB or EDGE provides Michigan with versatility to their defensive looks.

  • Depth: Jimmy Rolder and Cole Sullivan have been rock solid all season. Expect them to play an important role if Michigan is to hold the Bucks in check.

• Ohio State OL:

  • While OSU has pieces up front, Michigan’s defensive front could be its toughest test yet. Hausmann and Barham plus Michigan’s depth can create pressure, stop the run, and challenge OSU’s protection.

Edge: Michigan — Their front-seven balance (run + pass) gives them a real chance to dictate this game.

Linebackers & Secondary

• Michigan Secondary:

  • While they have playmakers, there’s some risk. Young corners and safeties need to hold up, especially if OSU throws aggressively.

• Ohio State DBs:

  • With Michigan likely to rely more on the run or short-to-intermediate passing, OSU’s defensive backs could find opportunities. Caleb Downs is the best defensive player in the country and he covers up so much on the backend.

Edge: Ohio State Their passing game and Michigan’s potentially vulnerable secondary lean the advantage OSU’s way on this front.

Bottom Line:
If Ohio State is fully healthy, especially at receiver, they should have a clear path to impose their will through the air. But Michigan’s strength up front, combined with their linebacker depth, gives them a legitimate shot. This could very well be determined by who wins the trench fight and which WR unit shows up.

The last time the Buckeyes entered Ann Arbor undefeated was in 2023.

Blame. It’s the quickest answer and the least productive one. Too often, people in authority hide behind word salads and carefully crafted statements that assign fault without offering a single real solution. We’ve grown far too accustomed to mistaking this behavior for leadership, and it hurts everyone.

Now that we are well into the “Silly Season,” college football’s version of the Hunger Games, we’re hearing far too many “leaders” rattle off a laundry list of excuses for why success has eluded them, all while failing to present any actionable plan. Notice I said success and not victory. Successful leaders and successful programs experience pain on the way to greatness. It’s natural. It’s part of every story worth telling.

But true leaders pair that pain with vision. They can articulate where they’re going, why they’re going there, and what solutions they’re putting in place to get there. They speak with clarity because they’re competent and confident in the path forward.

If those two traits aren’t present, run. It doesn’t matter if it’s a football coach or a politician. Leadership requires a plan, accountability, and the willingness to own your failures. This moment demands serious people. The real ones always show up.

Now for the BIG 5

1. The Good: There are levels to this, and despite the Big Ten potentially landing four CFP spots, only Ohio State and Indiana look like legitimate national title contenders.

2. The Bad: It’s honestly wild that Michigan is 8–2. This might be the least impressive 8–2 team we’ve seen still somehow alive in the playoff race despite a –5 turnover margin vs Northwestern.

3. What did we learn: History was made on Saturday. Exactly zero times since 1869 has a team turned the ball over five times, forced none, and won. Yet Michigan pulled it off. Congratulations and also… what?

4. Best Match-ups for week 13: No question: USC @ Oregon. This one’s fantastic on paper, and the winner should all but lock up a spot in the CFP.

5. BIG Thoughts: College football is wilder than ever. The Transfer Portal, new clock rules, and a massive youth movement have created more good teams but fewer elite ones. Is this new parity what fans really want? Or are they quietly longing for the return of the Super Teams era? We’ll find out soon enough.

As the BIG Turns… Week 12…2025

Meetings. Important information that can often be an email. Where have we inherently gone wrong? Having a quality speaker articulate insights on data and facts can bring a human element to things that may simply be callously overlooked. However, too often people dive into the analytics and miss how results are truly achieved, by inspiring others to achieve their best with the information at hand.

In our current day and age people need to move beyond the colorful graphics and powerpoints. Finding the “human touch” in our communication is critical. College Football has seen greater change in this era than we have seen since integration or the expansion of athletics due to Title IX. Like in eras of the past, those that truly understand the challenges at present will become the trailblazers to success. What has not changed is the importance of communication and community. This is not to simply say the words spoken to the 100-110 members of a university’s football team. Rather everyone involved needs to be placed on a concise, community based message.

I am reminded of a story shared with me from a staffer at the University of Tennessee under Coach Heupel. The message was simple: “we are here to win, however, if there is someone who is not treating people the right way, they will not be here.” The message is clear, we have a standard, but our mission is community over results. Let’s see who can use this sage advice, and who will be exploring new opportunities or spending more time with their families.

Now for the BIG 5

1. The Good: There were just some fantastic games. The Iowa-Oregon game lived up to expectation as appointment TV. However, Penn State vs Indiana was an instant classic. This was the BIG 10 on full display. Bravo.

2. The Bad: Washington just provided a “life-line” to Coach Fickle and the Wisconsin program. Washington entered as a top-25 program with an outside shot at the CFPs. Those dreams are gone now. Further, that is once less quality win for Michigan and Ohio State.

3. What did we learn: The BIG has a fantastic future in terms of its QB play in conference. However, they are still young. This youth brings inconsistent moments and in November that can cost you your spot in the post-season.

4. Best Matchup for week 12: Iowa @ USC. The trojans have to win this one to keep their playoff hopes alive. Iowa is gritty and this could turn into a rockfight. Buckle up everyone this is going to be fun!

5. BIG Thoughts: The 4-Letter Network is pushing a LOT of anti-BIG propaganda regarding who deserves to be in the CFB Playoffs. Indiana and OSU are virtual locks. However, when the dust settles, I would not be surprised to see 4 teams from the BIG representing the conference in the playoffs.

Storyline: A marquee Friday night matchup with Oregon looking to cement its playoff résumé against a Minnesota team that has shown flashes but struggles away from home. The Ducks must avoid a let-down after escaping Iowa; the Gophers need to flip the script in hostile territory. I don’t see it happening for the Gophers.

Storyline: The Wolverines look to maintain their climb toward the playoff conversation while navigating an unconventional venue (watchout for the wall kids). The Wildcats are scrappy but will need a near-perfect game to pull off the upset.

Storyline: Indiana continues its march toward the playoff, facing a Wisconsin squad that may have just hit its peak, with their unexpected upset of Washington last week at Camp Randal. Don’t expect the miracle to happen two weeks in a row.

Storyline: Illinois seeks to move beyond mediocrity; Maryland is fighting to stay relevant in the conference’s middle tier. I expect a ho-hum game with plenty of offense and few real surprises.

Storyline: A clash of styles always makes for a fun game. The defensive juggernaut Iowa against offensive powerhouse USC. Iowa was able to contain Oregon last week, holding them to 18 points. The edge may go to USC at home but whoever’s best unit shines will win this one.

Penn State @ Michigan State

Storyline: How did CBS get this game in the prime 3:30 window? I suspect that the TV execs will be modifying how teams get picked for their season games and offer a FLEX option. Iowa vs USC should be on this screen and this game should be relegated to BTN.

Storyline: Purdue needs a miracle; Washington needs to refocus and return to who they are. I don’t expect to see the “Spoilermakers” making an appearance in Seattle. The Huskies will rebound and focus up for West Coast finish the last two weeks of the season.

Storyline: A Saturday night showcase in Columbus for OSU. The Bucks will aim to remain perfect and make a statement to the playoff committee to secure seeding. Expect OSU to keep the starters in and roll-up the score to keep pace as the #1 seed.

As the BIG Turns… Week 11…2025

“Yea we make a lot of money, but we spend a lot of money”

Patrick Ewing Hall of Famer from the New York Knicks famously dropped that gem on all of us. It perfectly encapsulates the world of college athletics today. College football has never been better, more popular or most importantly, more lucrative than it has ever been now. Billion dollar contracts have been procured by selling off TV rights to all the major networks and everything has been monetized to exfoliate the maximum amount of dollars from the fan experience. In short, colleges are ROLLING in the money.

However, all is not well. Week after week some AD or college president is crying poverty and claiming things cannot continue to go in this direction. Everything is more expensive and they may have to increase prices or cut programs to keep up. RUBBISH. College Athletics doesn’t have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem. It is a major problem when the best job in college sports is being a “fired” CFB head coach. Franklin-Kelly-Gundy have buyouts that combine north of 120 million dollars to NOT coach. WHAT ARE WE DOING?

College athletics are not just revenue sports. Football is fantastic, I love it. However, I will let you in on its secret, or pull the curtain on why it’s so A+ awesome. It is a community activity. From the tailgate, the Band, Cheerleaders, Dancers and a host of others, everyone is involved. Colleges should be looking to make other sports similar “3rd places” for the campus communities. Instead, they continue to feed the beast at the expense of all others. Proceed with caution my friends, as we have seen with horse racing, and boxing interests can change. The thing that doesn’t, community. Those that can expand theirs will find they can build something more valuable than revenue streams, loyalty. Cheers.

Now for the BIG 5

1. The Good: 10 BIG teams have now qualified for the second season. There are clearly levels of competition in the BIG, but with so many young QBs leading teams, the next few seasons will be very exciting.

2. The Bad: The BIG 10 ref crews. This is a Billion dollar operation now, it is time that the conference took steps to ensure better, more consistent enforcement each week.

3. What did we learn: If Coach Google is given the opportunity to score half a hundred he is going to take it. If he shows mercy, be grateful.

4. Best Match-ups for week 11: Oregon @ Iowa is going to be fantastic. CBS has to be elated to be hosting this match-up.

5. BIG Thoughts: It is clear that not only are Ohio State and Indiana playoff contenders, they look like they both could win the national championship. Week in and week out they make short work of their opponent and make it look easy. Is there anyone else that can join that club from the BIG this season?

PSU’s defense showed some flashes, but Indiana’s run game will make it nearly impossible to contain the Hoosiers.

Storyline: What was pegged to be a showdown for the BIG Ten championship has now projected two teams heading in opposite directions. Indiana looks to be every bit a contender for the National Championship. Penn State fans are turning their attention to who will be the next HFC in Happy Valley

Ohio State @ Purdue

Storyline: OSU eyes total domination before “The Game” vs. Michigan on Nov. 29. Purdue’s prayer? Wet weather (20% rain chance) and forcing turnovers (Boilers have 19 on the year) could the “Spoilermakers” be making a return? The OSU’s defense is just too much, the secondary this season has snagged 11 picks and the Bucks have been as dominate as any in the nation on defense. Odom’s honeymoon phase? Already over.

Scarlet Knights too were taken to the woodshed by Illinois in a 35-13 drubbing. Between the two squads lies a single win since September, an OT win over Purdue by Rutgers. Dear Barbra.

Storyline: Don’t watch this trainwreck. It’s bad football and Jim Delaney should be questioned everyday for bringing these two to us in the BIG.

Washington @ Wisconsin

Key Notes & Stuff: Washington arrives at 6-2 punching back with a 42-25 over Illinois. Wisconsin is in total chaos. While Badgers’ run D holds opponents to 3.1 ypc the rest of the story is grim, their last win came September 6th over Middle Tennessee. Turnovers will be the key stat to follow as Washington has a +4 margin (29th nationally) and Whisky is at −8 for the year (125th nationally).

Storyline: 4:30 PM Jump Around starts at Camp Randall. Washington will take care of business in Madison.

Nebraska @ UCLA

Key Notes & Stuff: Nebraska checks in at 6-3 but their season is probably nuked with QB1 Riola out for the season. UCLA enters at 3-5 and hoping to rebound from the 56-6 dismantling by Indiana 2 weeks ago. In addition to the bruises left by the Hoosiers, the Bruins are −2 in turnover margin and have been penalty-prone all year (74.6 ypg).

Storyline: Nebraska’s season is on thin ice without Riola. Playing at UCLA in a night game, expect a close fight but Bruins have the edge.

Prediction: UCLA 27 Nebraska 24

Oregon @ Iowa

Line / O-U: Oregon −7 / 43.5

Location: Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City, IA

Key Notes & Stuff: Oregon dazzles at 7-1 arrives for their first Kinnick invasion ever. Oregon brings with them an elite third-down defense (30.3%). Iowa grinds 6-2, 4-1 in conference, on a three-game streak and seems to have found an offense averaging 34 ppg in October. Iowa will be nasty on defense as well leading the FBS in total defense (234.9 ypg) and rush defense (83.9 ypg)

Storyline: Expect a physical, high-stakes game at Kinnick. If Oregon falls here, they can “wave” their chances to defend their Conference Championship goodbye. So far, Oregon’s best win has been a road victory at Penn State, this feels like a fork in the road for the Ducks. For the Hawkeyes, a win here could catapult them into the playoff conversation. Whoever finds their offense first will probably win this one.

Prediction: Oregon 24 Iowa 20

As the BIG Turns… Week 10…2025

There comes a time when you’re either in or out. To my friends on the LEFT coast, welcome to the BIG. I know you’ve been here a year already, but it’s time for a heart-to-heart. You’re no longer in the “Conference of Champions” (cue the Bill Walton voice). You’re now in the land of milk and honey. The BIG is your home. And while you’re adjusting to our Midwest traditions—waving at everyone, insisting ranch is a food group, bar hopping between a wedding and the reception—there’s another passive-aggressive expectation we need to address: wrestling.

You see, while you’ve joined our “family,” we’ll never fully accept you—like that in-law who intentionally calls you by the wrong name—until you embrace who you are now. We love our football (and do it better than anyone in the country, sorry Mr. Feinbaum), but there’s another cultural marker you must adopt: wrestling. The BIG is the undisputed greatest wrestling conference in the world. It’s time to invest a few coins, step into the arena, and add wrestling to your athletic resume. We don’t like programs that run on the cheap (looking at you, Wisconsin). Embrace your new identity, put on that flannel, adjust those jean shorts…or face relegation to FS1 and Peacock games, with the beer fridge forever off-limits.

You’ve had the “talk.” Next time we meet, I’m sure you’ll do the right thing. If not…well, your mother may not say it, but she’ll be disappointed. Take care, and remember: use the side door next time, gotcha?

Now for the BIG 5

The Good: Indiana is simply elite. As of Monday morning, Vegas has the Hoosiers as virtual locks for the BIG 10 title game (+185) and a National Championship (+650).

The Bad: So many candidates. Purdue fumbles in overtime. Minnesota gets trashed by Iowa…again. Illinois takes an elbow to the face. Oregon barely beats Whiskey, 21-7. And the BIG 10 referees? All fine candidates for “Hot Garbage of the Week.”

What Did We Learn: Iowa looks like a College Football Playoff contender. With Oregon visiting Kinnick in two weeks, the Hawkeyes could be wreaking havoc.

Best Matchups for Week 10: Preseason, this was Ohio State vs. Penn State hands down. Now…let’s go with USC vs. Nebraska. Both teams have shown their best and worst. Two great QBs, two unpredictable teams—this one should be a thriller.

BIG Thoughts: College football today feels a lot like youth sports. Older teams tend to win more than younger (often more talented) squads. Inconsistency is the rule, and players are constantly on the move. Pass the orange slices—it’s time for the stretch run. November is here, and the fun truly begins.

Simply, Penn State is a broken program, but perhaps there still is some pride left in the program. Perhaps, but not likely. Somewhere James Franklin will be in a room laughing and calling random timeouts.

Storyline:
Rutgers’ offense has flashes, but the Scarlet Knights’ record reflects inconsistency. At home in Champaign, Illinois should be able to impose its will. Brett Bielama has to find some way to get things rolling again, because they are not going to the playoffs, but this could dip to something worse. Hey coach, who called you for an interview, because it seems like you are checked out.

Storyline:
Maryland is hunting for bowl eligibility after going 0 for October. Indiana is in full control of the conference and the Turtles look to be the next victim. Putting up a 50 burger victory over UCLA means this will likely be another track meet and Maryland is out-gunned.

Michigan State @ Minnesota

Storyline:
This one feels like a fork in the road for both teams. Michigan State is reeling after a rivalry loss; Minnesota is trying to build late-season momentum. Whoever runs the ball better probably wins. Minnesota has been a consistent yoyo–up and down–I see the Gophers playing well enough to win this one. Is this the end of the Smith era in East Lansing?

Michigan can’t afford a stumble if it wants to stay in the playoff conversation. Purdue has been frisky at times, but this feels like a “take care of business” week in Ann Arbor. Plus, after fumbling the ball away in OT to Rutgers the Boilermakers look to be emotionally broken.

USC @ Nebraska

Key Notes & Stuff:

• Nebraska RB Emmet Johnson has 837 rushing yards on the season

Storyline:
Lincoln under the lights. USC brings the flash, Nebraska brings the grit. If the Huskers can slow the pace and win the turnover battle, they’ll have a real chance to pull off the upset.

As the BIG Turns… Week 9…2025

Well, that’ll be “about a thousand.”

Huh.

Yes, that was a recent exchange with my local plumber. You see, here in the land of milk and honey—the Midwest—we have our annual Fall Clean-Up. You know: raking leaves, bagging dead plants, and blowing out the sprinklers. It was that last task that tripped me up.

I went to the basement, drained the outside water line, and did all the prep for winterizing the system. But there was a problem—the pipe kept refilling with water. After spending the better part of a weekend trying to fix it myself, it was time to call in a professional.

What I thought would be a quick, easy fix turned into quite the project. Suddenly, main lines had issues, the city was called in to dig holes in my yard, and the plumbers made multiple runs to Home Depot. WOW. From the eyes of an amateur, it should’ve been an in-and-out job. But the trained pro saw deeper issues that needed addressing before the real problem could be solved.

This season, some teams are still living in preseason-magazine mode—everything is awesome and all their goals are still within reach. For others (see: UCLA and Penn State), there’s trouble in the pipes. From the outside, it’s easy to think you “know the answer,” but few actually know how to fix it.

Find the right person (see: Indiana), and everything can be A++ awesome moving forward. Find the wrong one (well, there are too many examples to list), and you’ll be dealing with issues for decades.

So, to all the fan bases trying to fix the problems in their own house: make sure you hire someone who can get to the root of it all. Otherwise, you might find yourself knee-deep in water—and trouble—for years to come.

Now for the BIG 5

1. The Good: The BIG 3 of the BIG (OSU, Indiana, Oregon) once again cruised to victory. Their three opponents combined for just 23 points. The elite programs continue to make the rest of the league look levels below.

2. The Bad: Another October, another trying month for the Turtles. They went 0‑3 for the month—but don’t worry, guys, you have Indiana to start November.

For example, when Penn State dropped James Franklin, that recruiting class was instantly up for grabs. Power programs like Oregon and Ohio State are ready to scoop up those prized pieces—further widening the gap between the haves and the have nots. For my friends who dabble in economics, the rule of unintended consequences is working overtime right now. What starts as a quick fix can turn into a full-blown disaster. Proceed with caution.

4. Illinois (5-2) Can the Illini make a successful trip the the Left Coast? Playoff hopes for both squads are on the line.

5. USC (5-2) Against Michigan, USC looked brilliant. Against ND, they looked as sloppy as the weather. Can they regroup before they go to Lincoln in week 10?

6. Iowa (5-2)The Hawkeyes did just enough to defeat a wounded and rudderless Penn State. Can they keep the FLOYD this week?

7. Michigan (5-2) Big win against Washington. Will Sparty trip them up in East Lansing?

8. Minnesota (5-2) PJ Fleck is 7-1 vs Nebraska. PJ Fleck has been at Minnesota for 8 years?

Michigan State’s season is riding on its ability to gain possession of the Paul Bunyan Trophy. Dropping this one will make gaining a bowl bid very difficult. Meanwhile, Michigan has kept its hopes alive to gain a playoff bid after the rebound win vs. Washington. If Michigan is a legit team, they put the Spartans away early in this contest. Look for Michigan to once again lean heavily on the run game and dominate defense in this one. I don’t see the Wolverines taking a ton of chances in this game if they don’t have to in order to win. Rather, waiting for Sparty to make mistakes and slowly squeeze victory in East Lansing.

Rutgers @ Purdue

Storyline:
Indiana has been a turnover hawk all year, boasting a +7 turnover margin, ranking 10th nationally, while UCLA sits at -1. UCLA will not only have to get some breaks heading into Bloomington, they will have to win the turnover margin by at least 2. Fernando Mendoza (IN) and Nico Iamaleava (UCLA) are two of the most prolific passers in the nation. If anything, this should be a fun game to watch, as long as the Bruins can protect Nico from the formidable Hoosier pass rush. If not, this one could be over by halftime. Coach Google showed mercy last week against MSU, I wouldn’t expect that trait to be on display again anytime soon.

Northwestern @ Nebraska

• Nebraska’s offense is averaging 416.4 yards per game, with 291.4 passing yards per game.

• Northwestern brings momentum, riding a four-game winning streak, including a 19-0 shut-out of Purdue.

Storyline:
Nebraska’s recent outing at Minnesota is a red flag. Their offensive line is below BIG 10 standard and is getting exposed. Northwestern’s defense will try to exploit the Huskers’ protection issues and disrupt Raiola’s rhythm. If Nebraska fixes protection and gets Emmett Johnson going early, they can control the game. I believe the Huskers win, but expect a closer game than the spread suggests.

Illinois @ Washington

• For Washington, Demond Williams Jr. has 1,837 passing yards, 10 TDs, 4 INTs, with a 72.1% completion rate.

Storyline:
The two week prep should assist the Illini in their West Coast trip. Washington was exposed by Michigan and their highly potent offense was rendered impotent in Ann Arbor. Illinois will not bring the exotics the Michigan did on defense, but may NOT have to in order to win. Michigan created TWO turnovers while playing base defense. Did Michigan write the prescription to stop Williams, play base defense, stay in your rush lanes and keep him in the pocket? Williams, a lot like Lamar Jackson, is dangerous when he is on the move. Take away his first read, and make him work from a drop back may be the prescription to contain this dynamic QB1 and foil Washington.

Sidenote: Former Illinois DC and now Washington DC Ryan Walters will attempt to contain the explosive RPO attack led by Luke Altmyer. Bryce Underwood, in limited opportunities, exposed the Huskies over aggressive fronts. Will Altmyer do the same?

For Iowa, quarterback Mark Gronowski delivered a standout performance, rushing for a career-high 130 yards and two touchdowns. His pivotal 67-yard run set up the go-ahead touchdown by Kaden Wetjen to beat Penn State. I fully expect the Gophers to play a TON of SKY/CLOUD—8 man looks—to stop this from happening again (Gronowski had 68 passing yards total). First team to 20 wins? Probably.

Who has Lance Leipold (former National Champion Coach at Wisconsin Whitewater) on speed dial? It has been 10 quarters since Wisconsin scored a TD! My goodness have things fallen off in Madtown.

This is going to be ugly, and the Ducks are naming the score. Unless you are an alum, I wouldn’t watch this one.

As the BIG Turns… Week 7…2025

This past Sunday I awoke to my wife being excited. She was ready to run, and I would be joining her. Soon, I noticed that we were shuffling into the car and arriving at a local park. The trail we would be running was a familiar one — a wooded path that lapped around a lake. It had tight turns, winding bends, and gradual hills, and oh yea, it was just over 2 miles. We would be doing 2 laps, I was told.

As we ran, I realized how much I’d begun to enjoy this routine. After several months of running again, this wasn’t a chore — it was peace. The rhythm of the trail, the shared smiles of passing joggers, the quiet focus of each step. My coach — my wife Lori — has had a huge hand in this. Her advice is simple yet powerful: run at an enjoyable pace, take breaks, push when it feels right, and most of all, find joy in the process.

The power of a good coach cannot be overstated. Watching Big Ten football each weekend, that truth feels more evident than ever. The talent level across the league is deeper than it’s been in decades, but too many coaches are tightening up, working for victory rather than playing to win. College football should be creative, chaotic, and fun. The coaches who get their teams playing free — not fearing mistakes — are the ones who will rise. Because if you’re running just to finish, you’ll never see the beauty of the course.

Storyline: A coast-to-coast showdown with conference & playoff implications. Michigan will lean on an elite run game and smothering pass rush, while USC leans on explosive plays to counterpunch. The difference in this one will be the HOGS. Michigan holds the edge here on both sides.

As the BIG Turns… Week 6…2025

The oil change for your car, oh what an experience. The other day I was tasked with getting my son’s vehicle to the dealership for this auto chore. Yes, I know, the station on the corner probably does it quicker and cheaper. However, for 2 very important reasons I have been a patron of the dealership. One, the last time I went to a “Fast Lube” place they forgot to tighten the oil cap and suddenly the check engine light was on and I had a mess under the hood. Two, I value preventative maintenance and all that goes with it. Nobody likes to hear their repairman say “well, that will be about a thousand.” However ignoring problems is never a solution and finding a trusted technician (shout-out to my man Ray) is like finding gold!

In the world of college football, many seem to forget about the value of preventative maintenance. Everyone harps on the value of the “Fast Lube” hitting the portal and most having a “mess” to deal with soon thereafter. Yes, some get in and out quickly, and are smiling all the way to the bank. However, most of those are the types buy a new car every 3 years anyway and have cash to burn to cover any possible mistakes. The rest of us live in the real-world. In the words of a HOF coach, you win with people. Those that find their people, people they can trust, and learn with, ultimately are the winners over the term. They get the most out of their experience and everyone benefits from this approach. In a world of instant gratification, vested relationships win. Cheers to the brave that believe in their people and build things to last.

Now for the BIG 5

1. The Good: Indiana, Oregon and Ohio State continue to flex over the rest of the league. QB play by each of these teams has been fantastic and containing these offenses is an exhausting task.

2. The Bad: Home field? Three of the toughest places for visitors to win at: Kinnick, Husky Stadium and Penn State (In a White Out) all were conquered by the visitors. WOW.

3. What did we learn: More teams now than ever are playing “Not to Lose” rather than “Playing to Win.” This speaks to the level of talent that is now present in the league and how a single error (see Penn State) can cost you a victory.

4. Best Matchup for week 6: Week 6 looks to be a little bit of a dog show. However, the best potential GAME on the slate, Michigan State vs Nebraska. Both squads are looking to get off the mat and regroup themselves after tough losses. The last time these two matched up saw Sparty win 20-17 in 2023.

5. BIG Thoughts: The BIG is now the KING of college football. Each week it is clear that the level of talent in the league continues to grow and DEFENSES are truly next level! The QB play in the BIG is amazing and I do not see that changing anytime soon. Cash is king, and the BIG is SPENDING!

Week 6 –HERE WE GO!!!

• Minnesota will counter with the strong game of QB Drake Lindsey. Lindsey has passed for 958 yards and 7 TDs so far this year.

Storyline: Ohio State will aim to make a statement in the Big Ten as their rivalry game with the Illini is approaching in 2 weeks.. Minnesota will try to control the line and keep drives LONG as they will try to play “keep away” with the Bucks. Look for Ohio State’s passing attack and ability to force mistakes to be the difference. The Death Star continues to roll.

Michigan vs Wisconsin

• Michigan will be paced by Bryce Underwood (733 passing yards this year) and Justice Haynes (537 rushing yards)

.Storyline: Michigan will lean on its strengths — a powerful run game and an improving defensive front — to control time of possession and tempo. Justice Haynes’ consistency gives them a reliable workhorse, and Underwood has shown enough poise to complement the rushing attack, with both his legs and arm talent.

Wisconsin will try to force Michigan into mistakes and slow the game, but their offense has yet to prove it can sustain drives against quality defenses. Their depth issues on defense will be exposed, as this is a mismatch in the trenches

Illinois @ Purdue

• Illinois QB Luke Altmyer has thrown for 855 passing yards this season.

• The Illini are averaging 231 passing yards/game and 209 rushing yards/game while averaging 36.3 ppg.
• Purdue lone bright spot has been QB Ryan Browne who leads Purdue with 1,036 passing yards

Storyline: Illinois wants to mix its pass-run balance to keep Purdue guessing. Purdue will try to lean on Browne’s arm, take shots downfield, and force Illinois to defend the entire field. The key swings will come on third downs, mistakes, and whether Purdue can resist big plays from Illinois’ offense and stay ahead of the chains.

Illinois must avoid errors and sustain drives. Focus is a MUST after that emotional win against USC last week. For Purdue, they HAVE to protect Browne, and generate pressure on Altmyer. If BOTH of those things don’t happen, the Boilermakers can’t win.

Prediction: Illinois 28 Purdue 18

Washington @ Maryland

Key Stats & Notes:
• Washington has a balanced attack (rushing + passing) and shows flashes of defensive strength. QB Malik Washington leads the offense with 1,038 passing yards so far this season.
• Maryland ranks 37th in passing yards/game (265.8 ypg). They average 38.5 points per game, tied for 34th nationally.

Storyline: This is a matchup between Maryland’s defense strength — the secondary — and Washington’s ability to generate offense under pressure from their electric QB. Washington must test Maryland’s secondary with smart play-calling, mixing runs and passes (Playaction will be BIG), and capitalize on any breakdowns. From what we saw against OSU, I am seeing a LOT of Boot calls coming from the Huskies.

Maryland’s offensive ceiling is tempered by their weak rushing game and below average play from their offensive line, To win, Washington must avoid falling behind early and work from an early lead — if they do, Maryland doesn’t have the offensive chops to keep pace

Prediction: Washington 34, Maryland 21.

Northwestern vs UL Monroe

• Northwestern, despite struggles vs tougher teams, will have a clear talent & depth advantage over UL Monroe.
• In their Week 5 win vs UCLA, Northwestern rushed for 199 yards — their highest in a Big Ten game since 2022

Storyline: Northwestern will dominate possession and rely on their run game to control tempo. If they establish the ground attack early, that may force ULM to completely abandon a balanced attack. . ULM’s best path is through the air, but they have been turnover prone this season. Expect NW to play a lot of Nickel and Dime looks and dare the Warhawks to run.

Prediction: Northwestern 24, UL Monroe 13.

Michigan State @ Nebraska

• Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola has thrown for 1,137 passing yards already this season and their developing into one of the better passing teams in the conference.
• Michigan State will be lead by QB Aidan Chiles, who has 868 passing yards this season.

Storyline: This one is a toss-up. Nebraska’s impressive passing attack and home advantage will give them a slight edge — but not a guarantee. Michigan State must force turnovers, win third downs, and make Nebraska’s offense uncomfortable-like what Michigan did in week 4. If MSU can keep it close deep into the 2nd half, momentum swings could decide the game. Can Chiles expose the Huskers man coverage? Whoever can keep their QB clean will win this one.

Prediction: Nebraska 24, Michigan State 20.

Penn State @ UCLA

Key Stats & Notes:
•Penn State is averaging 437.3 total yards per game, with 243.7 passing and 193.7 rushing yard while scoring pace is 44.0 points per game’

• Defensively, PSU has been stingy: they’ve allowed about 5.7 points per game
• UCLA struggles offensively putting up only 14.3 points per game

Storyline: Penn State will look to get its MOJO back after their heartbreaker vs the Ducks. Look for them to dominate early, forcing UCLA into mistakes, and lean on an aggressive defense to instill their will early and put this out of reach before halftime. The only question will be how long does Penn State keep their starters in for in this one. Is Coach Franklin fixin to score half a hundred?

Prediction: Penn State 42, UCLA 13.

As the BIG Turns… Week 5…2025

Road trips are just fantastic. Typically, for many of us, it involved piling into a friend’s car in college and trekking out to another campus for a party or athletic event. Road snacks, car games and stories are some of the most memorable moments that we all take away from the time of being a highway explorer.

Recently, I had the opportunity to return to the old campus for the first time in over 20 years. After the waves of nostalgia had hit, the life and energy of a college campus is truly one to behold. As much as I like taking in my fall gridiron games in the comfort of my living room, there is nothing like the experience of a “live” event. The tailgate, the conversations, bumping into unexpected old friends or banter with a rival fan, it is all awesome. It really doesn’t matter what the excuse is, find a location, preferably to watch a game of pigskin, jump in the car and make a memory. People, there are only a handful of fall dates, use them wisely before they are gone!

Now for the BIG 5

1. The Good: I guess the decision to play 3 tomato cans proved to be the correct one as Indiana not only beat Illinois by half-a-hundred, they may have taken their soul (worst loss by an AP top 10 team in BIG history). This was supposed to be a rock fight, but it was a complete route. The sneaky stat, Indiana’s defense was the real hero in this one, holding The Illini to under 200 yards of offense and 10 points. WOW!

2. The Bad: With that “L” Nebraska is now 0-28 when playing teams ranked in the top 25. For those keeping score at home, yes, it was all the way back to 2016 when the Cornhuskers last scored a win against a ranked opponent, then the #22 Oregon, 35-32.

3. What did we learn: Keep your QB clean! Nebraska, Illinois, and Wisconsin all saw their gunslingers taken down behind the line 5+ times. All 3 lost important league match-ups. If you are not skilled on the line, you will be exposed.

4. Best Match-ups for week 5: There is ONE game and ONE game alone that will not only shape the BIG 10 narrative, but the national conversation, Oregon vs. Penn State, in a White Out. Two top 5 teams are going to tangle Saturday night and the winner will be in control of the conference title race. Get your popcorn ready, this is what college football is all about.

5. BIG Thoughts: Business is picking up in the BIG and one thing is clear, if you have talented bigs, you are a player in the BIG. Elite line play is the consistent force that drives the bus towards the championship. Michigan, Oregon,Indiana and USC all looked the part in week 4.

Illinois just gave up 579 yards in their loss to Indiana, and were completely pedestrian on offense with 161 total yards.
USC QB Jayden Maiava has only improved each week through their first four games throwing for 989 pass yards and 6 TDs. Illinois QB Luke Altmyer has thrown 9 TDs so far.
Storyline:
USC enters this game full of momentum; their offense has been efficient but their defense has shown some potential cracks in the armour. Illinois, on the other hand, is reeling after the Indiana drubbing—the Illini were completely exposed. Illinois needs to reset and reset quickly., Expect USC to test them early with deep shots and testing the edges as Illinois were beaten there repeatedly by Indiana there. USC looks to have better skills and if they hold advantage on lines too, this will be another route.

Prediction: USC 34, Illinois 23

Rutgers @ Minnesota

Key Stats:

Rutgers leads the Big Ten in scoring offense with 41.8 points per game. The key stat to follow is line play. Rutgers’ rushing game remains near the bottom of the conference in terms of production 141 rushing yards per game.
Minnesota's best win on the season is their 23-10 win over Buffalo.
Storyline:
Rutgers is playing fast, scoring in bunches, and looks dangerous (at times) through the air. But their ground game and defense (especially against the run) are potential weak points. Translation, their lines are average at best. Minnesota will want to slow this game down, force Rutgers into third-and-long, and make them one-dimensional. If Rutgers can evade turnovers and get chunk plays in the passing game, they have a chance. Minnesota must dominate in the trenches and control time of possession. Line play will decide this game.

Prediction: Minnesota 31, Rutgers 24

Indiana @ Iowa

Line / O/U: Indiana −7 / 48

Key Stats:

Indiana smashed Illinois, putting up 63 points and 579 total yards.
Iowa has had trouble putting up big numbers so far, their offense has been more methodical, less explosive. Currently they are averaging 383 ypg on offense good for 106 in the nation.
Storyline:
This is a crucial test for Indiana: can they assert dominance away from home, maintain offensive balance, and avoid mistakes under pressure? Indiana has their RPO game functioning at a very HIGH level BUT Phil Parker is one of the best defensive minds in the game. Iowa will lean on his defense, trying to minimize explosive plays, win the line of scrimmage, and make this a grind. If Indiana gets ahead early, Iowa does NOT have the style or players to win a shootout. HOWEVER, Iowa is dangerous at home; crowd, clock management, and toughness will matter. Key will be turnovers, third-down defense, and whether Iowa can slow Indiana’s tempo. If that is not a check on every box, Coach Google wins again.

Prediction: Indiana 31, Iowa 24

Ohio State @ Washington

Key Stats:

OSU QB Julian Sayin has 779 passing yards, 8 TDs, 3 INTs through his first three games. Washington’s QB Demond Williams Jr. has778 passing yards, 6 TDs.
Storyline:
This is one of the strongest matchups in college football. OSU has been efficient both in passing and rushing. Washington has big playmaking ability, Jonah Coleman is a skilled back in the run game and Demond Williams Jr. can beat you running or throwing. But OSU’s experience, depth, and discipline may give them the edge. Travel is a HUGE factor in this game as winning a game in Huskie Stadium is always a tall task, even with an extra week of prep. OSU’s RPO game centered around their ELITE WR talent will likely allow the Bucks to control how this game is played.

Prediction: Ohio State 31, Washington 20

Oregon and Penn State are undefeated-Top 5 teams and this is a rematch of the 2024 BIG Championship. Oregon’s offense has been high-octane averaging 524 ypg while averaging over 50 points a contest. The Ducks defense has been equally impressive allowing just over 9 points a game.
Penn State’s defense is among the best in the nation so far, allowing less than 6 points a game. Offensively, the Lions have a balanced attack averaging 240 in the air and 194 on the ground.

Storyline:
This might come down to who makes fewer mistakes.

Oregon will try to push pace, get chunk plays, and force Penn State to defend long drives. Penn State will likely try to control the line of scrimmage, pressure the QB, and force Oregon into uncomfortable downs. The impact of “Stadium Pulse” cannot be understated. The fans at Penn State will be a factor. Turnovers, and special teams will be in the “X” factor in this one as skill and line talent will be equally matched.
