Kevin O’Leary, who is worth $400 million, recently posted himself shopping at Walmart, comparing paper towel prices and bragging about his $29 Walmart jeans, saying, “I’m always looking for a great deal.”

Some people think it’s a fake stunt for social media. Performative. Maybe he’s just cheap.

J. Paul Getty was next-level cheap.

Not only did he famously install a pay phone for guests at his English mansion but he refused to pay his grandson’s kidnappers the $17 million ransom.

He waited until proof arrived months later, which was his grandson, John Paul’s severed ear.

He finally agreed to pay $2.2 million himself — the amount his lawyers said was tax-deductible —and loaned the rest to John Paul at 4% interest.

John Paul Getty was finally released after five months of hell but struggled for the rest of his life. After a drug overdose and stroke in 1981, he was left severely disabled. He died in 2011 at just 54.

Getty was the first person to come up when I did a search of the most well-known cheap celebrities. I have to say, I was happy he was not Jewish. I say this because I am and I do everything to try to dispel that stereotype. More on that later.

Do you know where the expression “going Dutch” comes from? I didn’t until a friend of mine who grew up in Holland told me Dutch people are famously frugal.

If I went on a date with a guy and he asked me to pay half, I would get up and leave. Seriously. Maybe it’s because I am Gen X, but I am of the belief that a man should pay on a first date. They should!

There are all different kinds of cheap. I’d put it on a spectrum:

Frugal → Stingy → Miserly → Pathologically cheap/compulsive. I know which it is when I see it.

The same friend who grew up in Holland owned a discount designer store on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris. She sold Chanel and other high-end brands for about a third of the retail price.

One time, this very rich guy from Disney came into her store with his mother and spent hours haggling over every piece of clothing she wanted to buy. He even negotiated the credit-card fee. American Express charged 3%, but since he was paying with Visa, he insisted she deduct the difference. Then came the VAT taxes. He picked apart every last penny until she finally said, “Just take the clothes. Pay me whatever you want. I don’t care anymore.”

“No, no,” he said. “I want to be fair.”

Then he paid her exactly what he had calculated.

That’s not frugality. That’s something else. The guy was worth more than a billion dollars. And the whole time he was haggling over a few dollars, he was wearing a Patek Philippe.

My friend used to have a booth at the flea market on Melrose in Los Angeles and people who were wearing Hermès Birkin bags and Gucci loafers would haggle with her over a dollar. I told her it’s a game for them so just raise your prices. So she did.

Being careful with money is one thing. Trying to get a “deal” when you have more money than you could spend in a lifetime is a kink. It can be harmless fun, although not for the people doing the selling.

There’s another more extreme type of cheap which is connected to Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder, or OCPD—

“OCPD can manifest in different ways but one is a rigid need for control that can include extreme miserliness and hoarding money for security.”

Imagine having money but being too afraid to enjoy it. What a sad way to live.

Then there are the people who are the polar opposite. Candy Spelling, wife of the famous TV producer Aaron spelling. (Charlie’s Angels, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat) had a bowling alley in their house. It was 56,000 square feet with more than 100 rooms.

On top of a bowling alley, there was a beauty salon/barbershop, a wine cellar and tasting room, a screening room, a gym, a billiards room, a humidity-controlled silver-storage room, a flower-cutting room, a library, multiple kitchens, a swimming pool, tennis court and extensive gardens. Also an entire room devoted to wrapping presents.

I was once at a department store in LA and Candy told the saleslady she wanted to buy everything in her department in a size small. The woman almost fainted. She worked on commission.

I used to be more frugal myself. Not cheap, frugal. There’s a difference. I was reluctant to spend money unnecessarily.

One night I was telling this guy I was seeing how I had to look for a parking spot for 20 minutes. He asked me why I didn’t just park with valet. I told him because it cost $10. He said “So?” Then he said something which literally changed my way of thinking about money profoundly. He said,

“Sabrina, you’re lucky enough to have money for convenience. That’s the whole point of having money. What else if not that?”

He was right. That one sentence changed the way I thought.

I had a friend who was so generous. He loved buying drinks for the entire bar. It drove me crazy because I thought people were taking advantage of him. I told him I thought that and he said, “I don’t care. It’s fun.” Part of it was ego. He liked being the rich, cool guy buying the whole bar a round. He was such fun!

My father was generous, but he hated being taken advantage of. Once, a really wealthy friend of his stayed at our house in Sun Valley. He never paid for dinner when we went out, never bought groceries, ran up the phone bill—back when that was a thing—and returned our car with an empty gas tank.

My father finally lost it.

It wasn’t about needing the money. It was about the disrespect. Having plenty and still expecting everyone else to pay isn’t frugal. It’s both cheap and entitled.

For some people, it isn’t really about money at all. Money is simply where their fear and need for control land.

I knew someone with a car and driver who sent the driver to different grocery stores in New York to get the best price on meat.

Another friend’s mother would take the leftover maple syrup after we had pancakes and pour it back in the bottle. She would do it after we left the table but one time I went back in the kitchen and saw. Thankfully she didn’t see me.

Take money out of the equation—give everyone the universal basic income Elon Musk predicts—and they’ll probably find something else to hoard, control or obsess over.

Anorexia works the same way. When life feels out of control, food can become the one thing you feel you can obsess over and control. When the behavior becomes extreme, the money isn’t the disease. It’s the way the illness manifests.

There are some who have a pathological fear of losing money.

People who lived through the Great Depression learned to save everything because they remembered having nothing. That mentality often got passed down to their children and sometimes their grandchildren.

The same thing has happened in cultures shaped by persecution and displacement. Many Jewish families, for example, have histories in which previous generations were forced from their homes, stripped of property or lost everything during the Holocaust.

Even generations later, the message can linger…

Save. Don’t waste. You never know when it could all disappear.

Some people are next level. I had a family member who used to take all of the sugar packets and mints from a restaurant and put them in her purse.

People associate OCPD with neatness. There are also checkers, washers and hoarders. The checkers often can’t relax because they think they left the stove on. The washers wash their hands incessantly. This math teacher I had used to stop in the middle of class to go wash his hands.

Hoarders, in my opinion, are the worst.

We’ve all seen or heard about the show Hoarders. Houses packed floor to ceiling with stuff, sometimes even food, yet they cannot throw anything away.

And it isn’t always just stuff. Some people hoard money the same way. They get major anxiety about spending it similar to how an anorexic counts calories. They count dollars. Down to the penny.

You know the people at a group dinner who divide the bill to the last cent. It’s one thing if someone didn’t drink and wants to pay less. That’s not who I mean. Sometimes they contribute nothing and hope no one notices. We notice.

Some people who are truly unwell just don’t go out. I’m talking about people who can afford to.

When I worked at the Laugh Factory, it was a showcase club so we would pay the comedians something like $25-$40 for a spot. There was this one comic who was pretty famous who used to call and ask to pick up his check as soon as it was ready. Even if he had a spot that night, he would come get his check. For $40. He was making millions on TV.

In 1990, Spy Magazine conducted this prank called “Who Is America’s Cheapest Zillionaire?” They mailed $1.11 checks to 58 extremely wealthy people just to see who would bother cashing them. Twenty-six did, including Cher, Michael Douglas, Shirley MacLaine and Donald Trump. Those 26 were then sent checks for 64 cents. Thirteen cashed those. Finally, Spy sent the remaining holdouts checks for just 13 cents. Only two people cashed them: Donald Trump and billionaire arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi. 😂

Back to the Laugh Factory. Jay Leno would drop in every now and again and he was the nicest guy.

Even while making millions hosting The Tonight Show, he never touched his NBC salary. He only lived on what he made doing stand-up comedy sound the country. He still performs hundreds of gigs a year. But he does have one very expensive hobby which is collecting cars and motorcycles. He even has a great show called Jay Leno’s Garage.

He owns about 200 cars and motorcycles. He’s very smart about the cars he buys like the McLaren F1 he bought for about $800,000 that is now worth many millions. He also has a massive 122,000-square-foot garage in Burbank where the cars are kept. I’m sure when he passes it will become a museum of some sort.

Other than that, he’s remarkably frugal. Not cheap. There is a difference. Frugal and cheap people both like to save money, but other than that, they are not the same. Cheap people are no fun to be around.

The cheapskates are the ones who do whatever they can to avoid paying their fair share of a bill. Then there’s the “Oh, I forgot my wallet.” Or they run out to the parking meter because they didn’t want to pay the valet. It’s annoying as fuck. (Just for the record I never did the meter thing.)🤣

So Jay Leno is a great example of someone who is frugal. He doesn’t care about expensive clothes, which is obvious and he doesn’t take lavish vacations. Cars are his splurge.

That said, he was always a generous tipper.

You can tell a lot about someone by how they tip. And yes, tipping culture has gotten completely out of control. We're constantly being asked for 18%, 20%, even 25%—including at the airport when someone literally hands you a $7 bottle of water. I get it.

I'm talking about tipping when someone actually provides a service—waiters, bartenders, hairdressers, dog groomers, delivery drivers. If someone takes good care of you and you can afford it, tip them well. Also, don’t forget if you are a repeat customer, they will remember.

Every once in awhile some article will come out about a celebrity who was a very generous tipper or a not so generous tipper. I can tell you personally about a celebrity who came into the Laugh Factory twice and didn’t leave the waitress so much as a dollar. Halle Berry. That said, she is literally one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen!

Celebrities have no business being cheap with servers because they have money and a lot of them used to be servers too! According to the internet, some of the best tippers are Adam Sandler, Johnny Depp, Amy Schumer, Harry Styles and Taylor Swift. The worst are Madonna, JLo, Tiger Woods and Mariah Carey. None of these surprise me either way.

Then there’s Keanu Reeves in a league of his own.

Keanu Reeves is well-known for his generosity and altruism. He is famous for giving away millions of dollars of his movie earnings to film crews, stunt teams and medical charities without asking for public credit.

He gave away a big part of the money he made on The Matrix movies to the backstage special effects and costume departments because he felt they did the real work. He runs a private, unnamed foundation that funds children’s hospitals and cancer research. He started this after his sister battled leukemia.

Paul Newman is another altruist. He said his Newman’s Own salad dressing made more money by far than he ever did as an actor. He gave 100% of the company's profits and royalties to charitable causes, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars.

George Michael is one of my favorites because much of his generosity wasn't discovered until after he died. There have been all kinds of stories about him anonymously helping strangers, volunteering at a homeless shelter, and quietly donating substantial amounts to charities.

And then there’s Dolly…

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has distributed hundreds of millions of free books to children, and she's made major donations to education, healthcare and disaster relief.

Then there are the Bezoses.

I have no problem with people being rich or enjoying their money. But Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos are next level. They make extreme wealth feel like a spectator sport.

The $500 million yacht that has its own yacht. (No idea.) The private jets. The over-the-top Venice wedding. The designer clothes. The endless displays of extravagance.

Spend your money however you want. You earned it. But there’s something increasingly obnoxious about flaunting unimaginable wealth when so many people are struggling to pay their grocery bills.

There’s rich. There’s ridiculously rich. And then there’s “please make sure everyone knows how ridiculously rich we are” rich.

To be fair, the Bezoses give away plenty of money. It's the ostentatious flaunting of the rest of it that I find obnoxious.

L.A. County is going after Bezos and other wealthy owners for unpaid property taxes on private jets. Bezos reportedly owes about $244,000 — pocket change. Rihanna — about $104,000; Rams owner Stan Kroenke — about $290,000; Nike cofounder Phil Knight — about $89,000; and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone — about $95,000. Many of the owners say they didn't know the tax was owed, rather than purposefully not paying it.

Los Angeles isn’t going to tax its way out of its problems by squeezing a little more money out of wealthy people’s private jets. But that’s a post for another day.

My message today is much simpler:

Hey, tightwads—you can’t take it with you.😂

Spend a little. Give a little. Enjoy it while you’re here. You never know what the future holds.

I remember being around 12 and going to the movies with my dad. I think tickets were cheaper for kids under 12, so he said I was 11. No big deal.

My mother’s lies were a little more ambitious. She lied about her age all the time—and mine. I was perpetually 10, or whatever the cutoff happened to be.

My mother was crafty. She could somehow lie her way into a better hotel room or better seats at a Broadway show. She had a gift. A gift for being persistent as fuck. To the point they just said “uncle.”

My parents had a horrible divorce. I’ve written about it before, but I was basically the poor little rich kid growing up on Park Avenue.

Certain things were covered, like vacations, so we’d go to St. Maarten in the Virgin Islands for winter break. Then we’d come home, the dishwasher would break, and there’d be a whole rigamarole over which parent had to pay for it.

It sounds pretty far-fetched. Sadly, it’s true.

I remember my mother drove this really beat-up white Nova. Never heard of it? Neither had I. We rarely drove in Manhattan, but occasionally we’d take it to Connecticut, where we had a house.

One day my friend Faith and I were going to a party and my mother offered to drive us. Faith looked horrified when she saw the car. She actually asked my mother not to drop us off in front of the apartment building because she was embarrassed.

I lied and told Faith it was a loaner car.

I try not to lie as much as possible because it always seems to bite you in the ass. It's also usually unnecessary.

I remember a guy I worked for who would lie about where he was when someone called. He’d say he was at some party “in the hills” or “on the lot.”

A lot of the time people know you're lying that's another reason why it's a good reason not to. If you're going lie, don’t make it some big ass lie. You should stick as close to the truth as possible and you should have a really good reason.

The internet says the average person tells about one or two lies a day, although some do more of the heavy lifting. Most people tell little white lies—

“I’m fine,” “Traffic was terrible,” “No, those jeans don’t make you look fat.” Not the major deceptions of people leading double lives. I don’t know how those people pull it off and sleep at night.

The bottom line is that we all tell lies but to different degrees and for different reasons. “Oh your text message must not have gone through.” Or “15 days to flatten the curve.”

I remember this waitress at the Laugh Factory used to do cocaine. Whenever I'd be in the bathroom, I’d hear her sniffing away and if she saw me, she would say “Ugh my allergies are acting up” and I remember saying once, “Wow you have some serious all year round allergies! You might want to get that checked out.” She quit the next day.

Some people are truly gifted at it. A friend of mine’s husband used to walk into Academy Awards parties like he belonged there. He was tall and good-looking, and he just acted like he knew everyone. There was even a magazine photo of him standing next to Gwyneth Paltrow. Sometimes I wish I had that kind of nerve. Elephant balls.

We all know people lie on social media. They pretend a private plane is theirs, the house is theirs, the car is theirs etc. The worst is when people post about their 10th wedding anniversary and you know they are on the verge of divorce.

People who are really happy in their relationships or have a private plane don't need to convince you they do. Ego needs an audience.

People who are serial liars are a problem. Lying is a compulsion for some of which there are no known interventions.

The latest liar in the news is Jason Arday, the former Cambridge professor who became famous for being the youngest Black professor, at 37. He resigned on August 5, 2026 and then died 9 days later at age 41. Sad.

He plagiarized over 100 passages in his PhD thesis. He made some outlandish claims like to have run 30 marathons in 35 days, raised roughly £5 million for charity, and overcame both brain and testicular cancer.

He also said a severed pig's head had been delivered to his parents' home because of racism. There was no evidence of that.

Then we all remember George Santos. Remember “I’m Jew-ish.”

The lies politicians tell are never-ending.

Ilhan Omar's original congressional financial disclosure listed two businesses partly owned by her husband, Tim Mynett, at a combined estimated value of $6 million to $30 million. That was a massive jump from the previous year's valuations and, not surprisingly, triggered scrutiny big time.

Then she amended the disclosure. The new filing said that her and her husband's combined reportable assets were only $18,004 to $95,000—that's $18 thousand, not $18 million. Seriously? Again, stop with the big ass lies.

Lying seems like a prerequisite for the job of politician. Does anyone ever keep their campaign promises?

From “Read my lips: no new taxes” to “If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan” to “Mexico will pay for the wall.”

Different presidents. Different parties. Same bullshit.

I loved that comedy Liar Liar starring Jim Carrey. He played a lawyer who lies constantly—to clients, colleagues, his ex-wife, and to his son, Max.

On Max’s birthday, he breaks another promise again. So Max makes a birthday wish that his dad cannot tell a lie for 24 hours. The wish comes true.

The problem is he is a lawyer in the middle of a major court case, and suddenly he is physically incapable of lying. He blurts out exactly what he thinks and has to figure out how to practice law while telling nothing but the truth. An honest lawyer? That’s an oxymoron.

It’s hilariously funny but underneath the comedy, it’s really about a father realizing that his dishonesty and broken promises are costing him his relationship with his son.

Why do people lie? To protect the ego, avoid embarrassment, escape punishment, spare feelings, dodge confrontation. Or to gain something—romantically, professionally, financially. Especially financially. Follow the money. Money leaves a trail, though. It’s getting harder to say “that never happened” when the digital record says otherwise.

Desire for material gain is a powerful motivator, and when money is the driver the consequences are usually bad for everyone involved. I was once in a court case with a woman who tried to cut me out of money on a project we’d worked on together. I tried to settle. She refused. We went to trial. She lost. I had the TRUTH—and the receipts—on my side.

As Mark Twain said, “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.”

Truth usually prevails.

Sadly, attorney’s fees do too.

Coming soon—AI-powered lie detection or simply put, a world where AI makes it impossible to lie.

The idea is that AI can analyze multiple signals at once—facial micro-expressions, changes in voice, speech patterns, eye movements, heart rate, body language, and inconsistencies between what someone says and the available evidence.

When it comes to the “evidence” part, think about the digital trail we already leave behind like texts, emails, financial transactions, location data, photos, social media, public records and timestamps. Now imagine AI being able to cross-reference all of that information in seconds. I’ve used it and it’s getting better and better. It’s truly remarkable.

If AI really makes lying impossible, humans are going to have a problem. 😄 Lying may never disappear. Getting away with it could become a whole lot harder.

There is of course the downside. AI is simultaneously making it easier than ever to lie. We have deepfakes, cloned voices, fake photos and fabricated videos which are hard to distinguish from the real thing.

So we may be simultaneously creating the greatest deception machine ever invented and the greatest bullshit detector.

I think the detector wins.

Lying works when the liar knows something the other person doesn’t. What happens when technology closes that gap?

Truth almost always has a way of catching up. Now it’s just getting faster. So quit lying.

We are all obviously unique, but we’re also human, and there are certain behaviors that seem to work on almost everyone.

These tips can help with everything from communication and first impressions to self-improvement, success, and attracting others.

I culled this list from articles in publications including The New York Times, Psychology Today, The New Yorker, and others. I also actually tried most of them and they work!

They’re fun to experiment with in everyday life. Some are a little too manipulative for me, so adjust accordingly. And some are hard to remember, but even incorporating a few might make your life a little easier.

Let’s go!

1. Do they like me?

To find out if a person likes you, yawn. Make sure they can see you when you yawn. After you yawn, turn and look at them. If they’re now yawning, you know that they had their eyes on you. That’s because yawning is contagious.

If you are interacting directly with them, pick a word and every time they use this word nod and smile. If they do like you, they will usually start to use the word too.

Another tell is in a group setting, when people start laughing with each other, each individual will glance at the person they feel closest to. This is pretty good way to see who enjoys your company most.

2. Aim high

   When you want something from someone—whether it’s a certain amount of money or getting your kids to eat more vegetables, start high.

   Ask for considerably more than you actually want. When they say no, come back with the amount you really wanted. After rejecting the bigger request, they may be more likely to agree to the smaller one.

   With kids, try giving choices instead of yes-or-no questions.

   Instead of, “Do you want broccoli?” ask, “Do you want two pieces or four?”

   Now the decision isn’t whether they’re eating broccoli, it’s how much. And they feel like they made the choice.

   This works with all kinds of things. Use your imagination.

3. Need help?

   I think this one is about distraction. If you’re talking to someone while casually handing them something, like a box, the majority of people will instinctively take it without even thinking about it.

   This one feels a little manipulative to me, so maybe tell them what you just did afterward!

   For more serious things, simply say, “I need your help.”

   Most people actually want to help. It makes them feel good. That’s been my experience anyway.

   And it’s okay to be vulnerable and ask.

4. Getting information

   If you have a kid who you think is hiding something, or anyone you suspect isn’t telling you the whole story—here’s a great trick.

So Time along with NPR, MSNOW, CNN et al. think ICE is a menace to society. FOX, Newsmax et al. think they are saviors doing a very tough job, getting rid of illegal immigrants who flooded the country by the millions under the Biden administration, who basically said, “come join us.”

If you watch Fox, you’re likely seeing ICE agents as law enforcement officers doing an incredibly difficult and dangerous job—while being harassed, obstructed and demonized for enforcing immigration laws.

If you watch MS NOW or consume mostly left-leaning media, you’re much more likely to see masked, militarized agents using excessive force and terrorizing communities.

Same country. Same agency. Same incidents.

Two completely different realities.

I posted the following on notes and boy did I get an earful…

ICE is out of control.

John Gannon is a 75-year-old Texas businessman, lifelong Republican and Trump voter.

His fiancée, Yasmin Suarez Reyes, is a Spanish citizen originally from Venezuela. She entered the United States legally in 2023 and applied for asylum before her authorized stay expired. She has no criminal record.

Last month, the couple was at the Houston airport heading to Las Vegas when Gannon says eight plainclothes ICE officers surrounded Reyes and took her into custody.

She remains detained.

The DHS says Reyes had overstayed her authorized admission and that a pending asylum application does not itself give someone lawful immigration status.

And that requires eight officers to haul her away?

“After leaving the United room, eight officers, ICE agents swarmed Yasmin and detained her. [They] didn’t tell us why and wrestled her off into a car,”Gannon said.

He went on—“They are picking up law-abiding citizens. They’re destroying families.”

I support securing the border and deporting dangerous criminals who are here illegally. But an immigration policy that treats a woman with a pending asylum case and no criminal record like a dangerous fugitive is a bridge too far.

And this keeps happening. It must stop. Go after the criminals. I’m sure out of 10 million people entering the country illegally, you should have your hands full with that.

There is nothing more emblematic of the political divide than the topic of ICE. ICE is either the devil incarnate or heroes protecting the country. A bunch of losers who are basically akin to a mall cop or patriots doing a thankless job.

There seems to be no in between as the media keeps letting us know. Choose a side and stick with it! They know it’s easier for people to be unified in opposition.

But as with most things, the truth is more nuanced. There are undoubtedly bad apples—agents who cross the line or abuse their authority. But there are also many agents doing a difficult, dangerous and often thankless job. Both things can be true.

A while back, I started writing a book called Beyond the Mic about my seven years as the general manager of the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles.

Over the years, people have encouraged me to finish it because of the incredible stories I have about the comedians and celebrities I worked with like Joe Rogan, Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, Louis C.K., Jamie Foxx, Chris Rock, Ellen Degeneres and many more.

Lately, I’ve seen a lot of established writers struggle to sell books. So instead of waiting for a publisher, I decided to publish Beyond the Mic right here on Substack—one chapter at a time.

This first chapter is free. Future chapters will be available in full to paid subscribers, along with my regular posts on current events, pop culture, health, technology, etc. I am trying to make writing my full time job.

Enough of that business. Let’s go!

Chapter 1: Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover

Joe Rogan is probably the most famous person who came out of the Laugh Factory. Maybe not the most famous but probably the most influential today which is wild.

If you had asked me who would be the comedian to end up making a $250m Spotify deal, have the #1 podcast in the world, The Joe Rogan Experience, with 21 million subscribers and the ability to influence a presidential election, it would not have been Joe Rogan. Not by a long shot. I think even he would agree.

First of all he was a very “blue” comedian—meaning dirty. I used to schedule the comedians for the week and I don’t believe I ever scheduled him to go on before midnight due to the nature of his material.

Here’s a sample and this is him clean from MTV’s Half-Hour Comedy Hour…

Joe has matured—significantly. His views have changed. The guy who was once strongly anti-drugs and alcohol now openly discusses the benefits of those substances when used mindfully.

He used to be judgmental about people who partied. Now he hosts the wild and crazy “Protect Our Parks” episodes where he and his close friends Mark Normand, Shane Gillis, and Ari Shaffir get drunk and high and pontificate about everything. It’s silly yet raw and real.

Then the next day he’ll have someone on like Roger Penrose, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist who talks about black holes and quantum physics.

He’s also become far more knowledgeable simply by doing the podcast and talking to such a wide range of people. I don’t think he saw that coming, and neither did anyone else.

By having long conversations with people from every walk of life, he’s educated both himself and his audience in ways that are hard to measure. It’s one of the most unexpected outcomes of the podcast and something no one could have predicted.

One person who has been along for the ride is his longtime manager Jeff Sussman who discovered him at a comedy club in Boston. Joe signed with him in his early twenties, and more than 30 years later, Jeff is still his manager. That says a lot about Joe’s loyalty.

In the entertainment industry, you often see people “trade up”, meaning switch representation to someone more powerful. Joe never did that because he is loyal.

He was also a genuinely good guy. I remember one Tuesday night during our open mic at the Laugh Factory, Joe came to support a friend who wanted to become a stand-up comedian. I overheard him giving the guy notes and encouraging him after his set. To be honest, the guy wasn't very good, but Joe treated him with kindness and respect anyway. That always stuck with me.

Also, the waitresses loved Joe. He was kind and a good tipper.

Joe was born in New Jersey and moved to Boston where he first started doing stand up. He also lived in San Francisco for a period of time and his mom and stepfather were hippies. I think his family was on food stamps for awhile.

His father left when he was 5. He doesn’t really talk about it very much but it obviously shaped who he is.

He had very strong opinions and could be intimidating. Part of it was the way he was physically built—like a brick house—and part of it was just his aura. He was nice but people knew not to fuck with him.

I had a bit of an insider’s look at Joe because he dated my friend who worked at the Laugh Factory. She was definitely the prettiest girl who worked there. Of course she was.

She told me he said he needed to work out hard every day in order to feel good. He was a physical specimen—still is.

A lot of women liked Joe. He was very good looking, especially for a comic which could actually work against you. He was able to make it work in his favor.

He also had fairly traditional views about men and women—maybe even a touch of the Madonna/whore complex, at least back then. Just my opinion.

Joe was always respectful to me. Whenever I emceed, he’d say, “Give it up for Sabrina, everybody!” Maybe it was because I was the one who put him on the schedule. 🤣 But honestly, I think that’s just who he was. He treated people well.

Joe was definitely more closed off back then. He didn’t really hang out with the other comedians, which is funny considering how many close comedian friends he has today. He was only in his early 20s when I knew him.

He also had a soft spot for the underdog. One comedian told me a story about Joe playing pool with a young comic who wore a hairpiece. A few guys started making fun of him, and Joe immediately stepped in and shut it down.

That was Joe. He didn’t tolerate people getting picked on. And people wouldn’t want to fuck with him. He won the US Open Championship taekwondo tournament as a teenager and later became a taekwondo instructor. He knew how to fight.

I remember when he got a part on the NBC sitcom NewsRadio. He played Joe Garrelli, the station's electrician and handyman, who was ironically a conspiracy theorist who wasn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer, but had a big heart.

Ray Romano was originally cast to play the part and when I asked Joe how he felt about replacing Ray he told me he actually didn’t. After Romano left, actor Greg Lee played the part before Joe eventually got the role. Phew!

Around the same time, the comedian Carlos Mencia was coming up. Carlos was a very funny Latino comedian but had a habit of stealing other people’s material.

It went on for years and Joe was tired of it. One night at the Comedy Store—just down the Sunset Strip from us— Joe confronted Carlos onstage.

It was all recorded and the video went viral. Here he is explaining it…

Joe was the only person willing to call him out regardless of the consequences. And consequences there were. He and Carlos had the same agent and that agent dropped Joe. Joe also got banned from the Comedy Store for years. It was because Carlos was the bigger star and well… follow the money.

It’s so telling that even back then, Joe was the only one who had the balls to tell the truth. He says he wonders if he would do the same today because of all of the negativity he encountered. I think he would have.

Years later, Joe challenged the prevailing narrative during COVID. Who can forget when CNN aired footage that made him look green after he took ivermectin, which they dubbed a “horse dewormer.”

Ivermectin has been around for years, given to millions of people and has been used to treat conditions in both people and animals. Its developers received the 2015 Nobel Prize in Medicine for it.

CNN was accused of misleading viewers about it. That’s the nice way of saying they lied. That just cemented his reputation as someone willing to push back against the mainstream narrative. What they were doing was so obvious…

It’s hard to overestimate the influence and significance of Joe Rogan. He built his platform through curiosity, consistency, and an incredible work ethic. He never missed a spot at the Laugh Factory, and he was never late. In the entertainment business, that’s rare.

He’s still one of the hardest-working people around. He’s a UFC commentator, performs stand-up, and records four or five long-form podcasts every week. And he stuck with podcasting long before most people took it seriously. While others dismissed it as “niche”, he recognized its potential.

The list of people who blew up after appearing on his podcast is long. It includes Andrew Huberman, Lex Fridman, David Goggins, Tim Dillon, Dr. Rhonda Patrick and more.

When Joe has someone on his podcast, a book can become a bestseller, comedians can sell out theaters, movies can hit big, and political candidates can suddenly find themselves speaking to people they couldn’t reach anywhere else.

Some people judge Joe and say he’s part of the “manosphere,” because his audience skews male and he talks about things like MMA, comedy, fitness, hunting, and self-improvement. But unlike most guys associated with the manosphere, he doesn't spend his time ripping on women or promoting himself. He’s not angry like a lot of these guys are. He’s grateful.

His show is built around long-form conversations with everyone from scientists and comedians to politicians, musicians, authors, and athletes. Anyone HE finds of interest.

Whether you love him, hate him, or have never listened to him, there's no denying he's changed the media landscape and the way millions of people consume information.

Yes, he's covered in tattoos and built like a brick house, but don't judge a book by its cover. Underneath it all, he's a softie.

Anthony Fauci. No shame.

I want to start by acknowledging that I am aware that COVID-19 killed people. I also understand the argument that leaders were trying to prevent widespread panic. And panic there was.

There is also a difference between dying from COVID and with COVID. A guy being hit by a car and dying who had COVID should not have had COVID listed as the cause of death. Yes this really happened. There are reasons for that like hospitals being incentivized but I don’t want to get into the weeds with that.

Just to put it in perspective, there are 8 billion people in the world. The World Health Organization reports about 777 million confirmed COVID-19 cases. About 7.1 million reported deaths. That’s less than 1%. Surmise from that what you will.

My problem is with the way it was handled by the people in charge who so many of us trusted.

Sometimes it seems like it wasn’t real—just a really long nightmare. Other times it’s so real like when you see all of these kids with developmental delays and a lot of anxiety due to the shut downs or remember your grandmother dying alone in the hospital or a nursing home because you weren’t allowed to visit her.

Now we have to see Anthony Fauci’s face all over again in these Senate hearings, about the origins of COVID-19 and his role before and during the pandemic. Lots of PTSD going on.

Fauci said he would happily testify because he had nothing to hide. At the hearing, he has invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times so far.

He really changed his tune. In 2022 he said—

“I am very happy to testify before any congressional oversight committee. I have nothing to hide. I can explain and validate everything that I’ve done. I’m going to do what I need to do, and that is cooperate fully, because we have nothing to hide at all.”

The live comments are brutal. Some people believe Fauci belongs in prison. I am one of those people but I know it will never happen. I do think more and more people realize Fauci is a fraud.

From his private journals that were just made public...

March 21 — “deaths 9800”

“Big front page article about me appeared in the Washington Post. Very flattering.“

“My national and international fame is explosive and really unimaginable”

“It is not hyperbole to say that today I am the most famous and talked about person in the country and one of the most recognizable persons in the world.”

March 22 — “Cases continue to soar. 30,000 in USA with 400 deaths“

“Press is going wild with me.”

“Front page in Washington Post yesterday and Op-Ed by Maureen Dowd in NY Times today about me.”

“Profile by Peter Nicholas on me in The Atlantic.”

This comes from his journals which were on a government server. These are his words. Narcissistic would be too kind of a word for this man. More like sociopathic. He writes about the number of deaths as if they are just a side note to all of his ubiquitous and wonderful press clippings.

In addition, he wrote in his journal that he got the shot and was boosted by the Moderna vaccine and had a pulmonary infarction 6 months later. Yet he still pushed the shot.

“America’s Doctor” as he liked to be called, lied about masks, social distancing, natural immunity and the seriousness of the side effects of the vaccine which he knew firsthand.

To justify mRNA vaccine mandates, Americans were told the shots would stop infection, block transmission, and end the spread of COVID. None of that was true, and Fauci knew it.

In another entry in August 2022, Fauci wrote that he pushed the CDC to avoid saying the vaccines were “not effective at all in preventing infection and transmission.”

He said it was because it “would undermine the DOJ’s efforts at mandates.”
He suppressed the truth to protect the mandates, not the people.

If you still believe Dr. Fauci did "the best he could with the information at the time," I urge you to read The Real Anthony Fauci by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. It’s really long because it is so meticulously researched and fact-checked. Notably, Fauci has never filed a defamation lawsuit against RFK Jr., which speaks volumes.

The book became a #1 nonfiction hardcover bestseller despite the fact that many bookstores and libraries refused to stock it, major papers declined to review it, and the New York Times suppressed advertising while ranking it lower than its actual sales. Roughly 1.4 million copies still sold.

Fauci has fraud written all over him. Currently, he is a “Distinguished University Professor at Georgetown University”, yet has never taught a class. Imagine that.

But this is the one that I can’t stop thinking about—the experiments on dogs.

The guy is truly a monster. Aside from his experimental drugs on dogs, he unleashed an experimental drug on humans which was taken by billions of people all over the world.

Obviously he was not responsible for people all over the world but imagine if he had supported the idea that we had options like alternative medications such as Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin.

The laundry list of things this man, who made the rules, is largely responsible for is astounding. Saying goodbye to relatives, missing their funerals, learning and social delays for children, mental health crises, economic devastation including the closing of so many small businesses and much more. People cut off relationships with friends and family members over this. The repercussions will be felt for years.

I remember seeing a baby and his mother on an airplane and he was trying to pull down his mother’s mask so he could see her face but she couldn’t allow him to. Those were the rules. Think about how much of a development delay all of these infants had. Not just infants.

These rules he made were completely arbitrary. When asked about the origin of the six-foot social distancing recommendation, Fauci said—

"It sort of just appeared. I don't recall, like, a discussion of whether it should be five or six or whatever. It was just that six feet is going to be the distance."

And what the hell was this about—

One of the main guilty acts of Fauci is not the claim that he got the COVID origin wrong at first. It’s that he and his Lancet crew fabricated a certainty about COVID’s origins they plainly did not possess -- due to entirely self-interested reasons (namely, their careers and reputations would be endangered if COVID had been caused by gain-of-function and other Wuhan research they funded and participated in).

They then weaponized that fake, deceitful certainty to label anyone who suggested a lab leak as a racist (which never made sense, since the “wet market” theory was always the more racist one), and then also used that non-existent certainty to bully and coerce media outlets and Big Tech to aggressively censor anyone questioning or dissenting from their proclamation.

The complete shutdown of debate, discussion and dissent over some of the this century’s most consequential policies was one of the main crimes. That they did this not out of good faith error but crass self-advancement and self-protection made it all the worse.

Fauci followed the same playbook during the AIDS crisis.

He was the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Dr. Fauci oversaw $6.1 billion in taxpayer-funded research annually.

Fauci decided to advocate for expedited testing and approval of AZT, emphasizing the urgency of the AIDS crisis. Sound familiar?

He collaborated with pharmaceutical companies to undermine off-patent treatments that were both safe and effective. (Like how he did during the pandemic with Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin.) He promoted a toxic chemotherapy drug, AZT, pressuring the FDA to approve it despite evidence of its ineffectiveness against AIDS. He conducted unethical experiments, violating federal laws to test these drugs on impoverished and minority children, with really devastating consequences.

I don’t want to go into the testing of the kids because it’s all too much. I don’t know how much worse this guy can get. I would say he has a God complex.

Fauci and his gang of cohorts used their power to control the media narrative, scientific journals, and government agencies. Doctors like Dr. Robert Malone, Dr. Peter McCullough and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, all Ivy-League educated doctors who specialized in immunology, virology, and vaccine development, were shunned and shamed because they dared go against the narrative and spoke out about the vaccine.

Dr. Malone was actually one of the people who helped develop some of the technology of the mRNA vaccines/gene therapy which was used by Pfizer and Moderna. With help from the media et al. Fauci was able to convince the public he was a quack, suppressing anything he had to say. Can you imagine how powerful you have to be to be able to squash information from the person who developed the vaccine technology?!

The censorship was so extreme that you would get banned on YouTube if you surmised that the virus originated from a lab in Wuhan China even though the lab from where it leaked, specialized in Coronaviruses!

Even Jon Stewart knew what was going on as he “explained” it to Stephen Colbert…

Not long ago, you would be removed from YouTube if you mentioned any alternative treatments for COVID like Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin. Yes, removed. It’s really hard to believe this happened in the United States of America. What the hell happened to free speech?

This was a highly coordinated effort to flood the public with fear-driven propaganda about COVID-19 while silencing dissent and stifling open debate. The lead architect of this response from the government was Dr. Fauci.

The media aided and abetted him. The press is supposed to hold the powerful accountable and tell the public what’s really going on. That’s why it’s called the Fourth Estate.

Instead, much of the mainstream media seemed to embrace Fauci rather than scrutinize him. Ten days after Americans were told not to gather for Thanksgiving, Fauci wrote in his diary that he had dinner at CNN journalist Jake Tapper’s home. According to Fauci’s own diary entry from October 23, 2020…

Rules for thee; not for me.

Will anything ever happen to Fauci? No.

I don’t believe anything will happen to him because he was “pardoned” and even if he weren’t, I doubt he would be held accountable.

What he did should never be forgotten.

Blindly trusting someone simply because they’re wearing a white lab coat or have a fancy title is a mistake.

The Milgram experiment should have taught us that. I guess history really does repeat itself.

It’s kind of baked into our DNA to listen to authority. So is tribalism. That’s how politics became conflated with health.

At the start of the pandemic, a lot of Democrats expressed skepticism about taking a COVID vaccine developed under President Trump. It was the “Trump vaccine” and Kamala Harris said,

“If Donald Trump tells us that we should take it, I’m not taking it.”After President Biden took office, the message shifted to you must take this vaccine. It was the same vaccine!

If you were on Team Democrat, masking and getting boosted was part of your identity. If you were on Team Republican, skepticism of mandates and standing up to government authority was yours.

The irony is that it wasn’t always this way. I remember plenty of “crunchy moms” on New York’s Upper West Side who were skeptical of vaccines long before COVID. And here’s another inconvenient truth— President Trump strongly supported the COVID vaccines through Operation Warp Speed. He also chose not to fire Dr. Fauci.

My point is we need to stop making every issue political. This is what the powerful people in charge want. To keep us divided. All of these politicians at the hearing are taking a side.

If you are a Democrat, you are defensive of Fauci like Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), who said, "This hearing is designed to entrap you." He also compared the proceedings to McCarthy-era political persecution, arguing that Fauci was being unfairly targeted.

On the other “side” from Rand Paul (R-KY)—

"Today will be the capstone to Anthony Fauci's 40 years of abuse of power at NIH. History will judge, but the facts as we now know them paint a sordid tale of dishonesty, misjudgment and ultimately the hubris, the likes of which the world has never seen."

As an aside, Trump hates Rand Paul. Trump also just posted on social media—

"Operation Warp Speed was the greatest success ever.”

Here’s a rant from Mike DePorch on X…

“Fauci didn’t just know the vaccines were bunk, WE ALL FUCKING KNEW IT, WE ALL FUCKING SCREAMED NOBODY SHOULD BE TAKING AN EXPERIMENTAL VACCINE. Common fucking sense and all the stupid pathetic ass politicians cared about was filling their fucking pockets while the heard of zombies got 15 different vaccines and then “conservative” governors pushed it over alternatives.

As long as the official position was the vaccine = good, all these politicians were going to REPEAT IT.”

Fauci wanted to become the world’s most famous scientist. What he did instead is divide us further and erode public trust in science more than anyone in our lifetime.

I hope we all wake up to the fact that most likely, nothing will happen to Fauci. It’s a lot of political theater.

These senators vehemently arguing with each other attend the same dinners, charity galas, weddings, and Washington parties. Many belong to the same social circles, send their kids to the same schools, and move in the same elite world.

While the rest of us argue with friends and family, lose relationships over politics, and treat every issue like the end of the world, the people at the top continue working, socializing, and are somehow worth millions on an annual salary of $174,000 per year.

Question everyone, especially those in power, regardless of the letter after their name.

Look at these two! Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. They may just be the most beautiful, sexiest people alive.

They do not always coincide. Meaning, there are people who are beautiful but not sexy and vice versa.

The person that comes to mind, probably because her face is all over magazines as it’s been 25 years since Legally Blonde premiered and there’s an upcoming prequel, is Reese Witherspoon. She is definitely a very attractive woman, but just not sexy, IMO.

Why? I’m not entirely sure. Maybe because she’s just so perfect.

Part of it also probably has to do with the roles she chooses. In Legally Blonde and The Morning Show, she played these smart, energetic, witty, and approachable women. She also just has such a wholesome, girl-next door look.

The best thing that happened to her was when she got that DUI. It gave her a little edge. That said, I still never bought her in Wild. I know she got a lot of acclaim but I just couldn’t buy her as someone who had lived that wild, crazy promiscuous life.

Prince was very sexy but very unattractive in my opinion. He was 5’2” and women were throwing themselves at him. He was kind of gender fluid at a time being gender fluid was not a thing. Women loved him. He dated Kim Basinger FFS!

One of my favorite quotes comes from the actress Sarah Shahi who had to do a sex scene with James Gandolfini on The Sopranos. She said,

“I remember thinking to myself, like how and I going to get turned on by this 47-year-old large, balding man?…But oh boy, did it work for me.”

Like Prince, Gandolfini just had the quiet confidence and charisma. All 240 pounds of him.

Jeremy Allen White, Adam Driver and Javier Bardem have all been labeled "ugly but hot.”

“Ugly but hot” is internet slang for someone who doesn't fit conventional beauty standards but is still widely perceived as very attractive because of charisma, confidence, talent, voice, style, or presence.

I love that phrase.

Years ago, Maxim magazine published a list called "The Unsexiest Women Alive." It was pretty mean. Sarah Jessica Parker topped the list. Madonna was on it too.

The thing with Madonna is she just pushes this sexualized image down your throat. It’s a lot too much especially at age 67. She looks amazing for her age but I went to her concert and when she started making out with a girl who looked like she could be her daughter, it was just beyond cringe.

She just tries too hard. It’s sort of ironic. The harder someone tries to be sexy, the less sexy they often become. Real sex appeal is effortless.

A lot of it has to do with the way you carry yourself. How you move through the world. The way you walk into a room. The way you speak. The small gestures you make. The way you look at people. And it’s organic—not contrived.

Confidence, which is different than cockiness, is so important. A sense of humor and being intellectually curious. Being authentic. I know that word is overused but it is for a reason. Just being honest with no agenda—no bullshit.

A friend of mine said someone is sexy when they have something to say instead of having to say something. No awkward silences. That’s so spot on. It’s a vibe and an energy that other people gravitate towards.

I knew a woman who was drop dead, gorgeous. She also spent more money on herself than anyone I know. Her hair, her makeup, her Botox, her tanning, her nails, her skin care which all cost a small fortune, but she did look beautiful. The problem was her personality. She was just vapid. No joie de vivre. None.

She'd constantly flip her hair, reapply lip gloss, and post photos of herself on Instagram. She so badly wanted attention. She'd get it—for a little while. It was sad and desperate actually. She just didn’t get it.

I remember I went out with this guy who was on a soap opera. He was so good looking, but after a couple of dates, I was so turned off. He was not the sharpest tool in the shed to say the least. He really had nothing really to say about anything. Ever.

I think intelligence is a huge factor in being sexy. People spend way too much time at the gym and under the knife when what they really need to do is go read a book.

I know that sounds mean but get informed about this world. Don't get so much Botox that you can't smile a real smile. Why do people think that is attractive?

I knew these sisters in school who were both very pretty. One was definitely better looking than the other. The one that was considered less attractive had guys falling all over her because she had the best personality. Very carefree. The greatest laugh, lots of energy and she just had that “it” factor. I don't know what it was but she had it.

It’s not quantifiable. It’s really about the energy you project and create. The energy other people feel when they’re around you. Everything is about energy.

Beauty gets your attention, but energy is what keeps it. You can have perfect features and no magnetism, or unconventional features and become the most captivating person in the room. That's why sex appeal can't be measured.

It’s getting dangerous out there. We’ve become a click nation.

The Fourth of July in Newport Beach was disrupted by a flash mob made up mostly of teenagers, but some adults too. 400 people were arrested. They all coordinated on social media, damaged property, and turned what should have been a celebration of our country, into chaos.

And for what?

It’s all about those clicks. Going viral. You see it everywhere now.

After the Knicks won, these crazy celebrations turned violent, with fights, vandalism, assaults, and clashes with police. Dozens of people were arrested.

One really disturbing incident involved a teenager getting beaten after a social media “influencer” provoked reactions to post for videos.

No sense of morality + bored, jobless young people + a smartphone = a toxic combination for all of us.

If you ask young people what they want to be when they grow up, they say “an influencer.” Not everyone can be an influencer. Most won’t be. But social media has convinced this younger generation that fame, clout, and easy money are realistic goals. The result is doing whatever you can to stand out.

The consequences are getting harder and harder to ignore.

The reward structure is upside down. A person who helps an elderly neighbor cross the street doesn’t get a million views. But if you start a riot and destroy property or provoke someone into a fight or climb the Empire State Building, suddenly you’re internet famous.

We’ve created a culture where attention itself has become the prize, regardless of whether it’s earned through talent, achievement, kindness, or destruction.

It doesn’t matter whether the content is good or bad. It just matters that you looked. And increasingly, chaos is what gets the clicks. You have to break through the clutter. And clutter there is.

Somewhere along the way, documenting our lives took precedence over actually participating in it.

Let’s just start with the basics. Look no further than a concert. We’ve all seen the bizarre way people hold up their phones during concerts. Some do it for the entire show.

Nobody dances like they used to. Nobody lives in the moment. Everyone is creating content for later or proving they were there in the first place.

“Look I got front row seats! I’m important!” It’s really dystopian—like something out of 1984 or Black Mirror.

We make a great effort to go to a concert by paying an obscene amount of money for a ticket and then the Uber, the drinks, the babysitter, all to experience a live show through our phones instead of our own eyes.

Singer Bebe Rexha was hit in the face by a fan's phone thrown from the crowd and required stitches. The guy later reportedly told police he threw it because he thought it would be funny and wanted attention.

A friend of mine was at Disneyland when she witnessed something really insane. A woman waiting in line to take a picture with Mickey Mouse yelled "Hey Mickey!" and threw her baby toward him while her friend snapped a photo. Thankfully he caught the baby. It was wild. Frankly, she should have been arrested.

Then there was that bison attack at Yellowstone Park. A grandfather and his grandson decided to take a photo of a bison but got a little too close. He was tossed into the air by the bison while people filmed the incident. The footage went viral online. It was everywhere. And both the mainstream and social media played the video over and over and over again.

When I went to Africa one of the safari guides told me one of the most disturbing stories I’ve ever heard. This couple decided to go on their own to see if they could spot a lion. They were specifically told not to do that. Well they did.

The man decided to try to get close to the lion to get a photo. Instead he got mauled to death. His wife filmed the entire thing. There are no words.

We all remember the Charlie Kirk shooting. Within minutes of the shooting, the graphic videos spread all over the internet across X, TikTok, Instagram, everywhere. Even if you didn’t want to watch it, it was nearly impossible to avoid.

Before many people even knew what had happened, people were sharing the footage. A PBS interview with a social media expert said the footage had been viewed "tens of millions of times." To watch a man get assassinated in broad daylight. Over and over again.

Then there’s RUNIT, the Australian collision sport where two people sprint directly at each other at full speed trying to knock the other one over. Sounds pretty archaic. That’s because it is.

RUNIT is advertised as being "born to go viral." That's the pitch. It’s not about any kind of teamwork or athleticism. It’s about virality. The sport was literally designed for the algorithm—a game built around the one thing guaranteed to get clicks which is sadly watching another human being get hurt.

RUNIT reminds me of Dana White's Power Slap league. It’s inane. It’s all about the possibility of seeing someone get knocked senseless in a clip short enough to fit perfectly on social media. It's quick, shocking, and shameless.

We've reached the point where people colliding headfirst at full speed or slapping each other unconscious is considered entertainment. Why? Because it generates clicks. The algorithm doesn't reward nuance. It’s all about spectacle, outrage, and violence. Now there are entire industries built around it.

So why are we all chasing those clicks? There is definitely the monetary aspect of it. You can make money with viral content.

Social media companies make money by keeping people engaged. Their algorithms promote content that provokes strong emotional reactions because those emotions keep people watching and sharing.

But some of it, like the guy at the Bebe concert said, is about attention. I think it comes down to wanting to be loved. Let me explain.

First there’s the obvious social status aspect. It’s wired into us. Status within a tribe increased your chances of survival and finding a mate. Now social media has turned status into a scoreboard with followers, likes, reposts, subscribers, and views. It’s digital street cred.

Physiologically you get a hit of dopamine. Social media is kind of like a slot machine. Every once in awhile a post takes off. That unpredictability and possibility is particularly compelling because your brain keeps thinking, maybe the next one will be the big one.

People want to feel validated. We want to feel seen, heard, and valued. A viral post can feel like thousands or millions of people saying, "I see you" or "I agree with you” or even “Love you!”

Fame has become democratized. It used to be that in order to become famous you had talent, wealth, political power, luck or the right connections. Social media created the perception that anyone can become famous from their bedroom with the right wild and crazy video.

I remember someone asking Leonardo DiCaprio why he wanted to be famous. He said he wanted to be loved and that we all want to be loved but that actors want it more than most.

People don't compare themselves to movie stars anymore. They compare themselves to their friends, classmates, coworkers, neighbors, and ordinary people who suddenly have 500,000 followers and brand deals. That makes internet fame seem attainable.

So what do we do about all of this?

We start rewarding different things. It starts at home with parents. Put down your phones and talk to your kids more. Make it a point to eat dinner together as often as possible and lead by example. When you go to a concert or a game, experience it without tech. Not every moment needs to be documented.

Schools need to bring back Shop Class and Home Ec. It’s not sexist! Boys and girls can participate in either or both. Schools need to emphasize skills and craftsmanship.

Kids need to learn also that participating in violent behavior has consequences. Do not coddle your kids by defending abhorrent behavior. You are not doing them any favors.

As for the adults, stop feeding the machine. Every click, view, and share is a vote for the kind of culture we want.

The algorithm isn’t some force of nature. It’s responding to us.

And maybe we can all make a small effort to share a few more uplifting stories too. I know I need that reminder myself. What you put out there has an effect on people.

Yes, it’s important to stay informed but we can balance some of the darkness with dog and cat videos, acts of kindness, and stories that remind us humans can be decent and kind. Most of us are after all.

If we stop rewarding chaos, eventually there will be less of it.

It didn’t happen overnight. It’s been a slow cultural shift where we have feminized our culture. Not by elevating women, but by devaluing many of the traits that were traditionally associated with masculinity. Sensitivity, vulnerability and expressing your emotions, have become culturally virtuous.

Those qualities are valuable. A healthy society needs compassion, empathy, and emotional intelligence. But we need toughness and resilience as well.

It needs people who can hear something they don’t like without demanding censorship, face adversity without losing it, and take responsibility rather than immediately looking to blame someone else.

The problem isn’t with femininity. The problem is the imbalance.

Young men are getting all kinds of mixed messages. Politically it’s on the right and on the left.

On the right there’s the extreme in the form of MMA and influencers like Andrew Tate. Then on the extreme left there’s a narrative which is essentially telling young men they have so much privilege. Their problems are stupid. They’ve been in charge for far too long and now they need to take a back seat. Basically shut the fuck up.

Pop culture amplifies the confusion. Pop culture doesn’t just reflect society, it helps shape it.

Look at today’s biggest stars.

I would say for actors it would be Timothée Chalamet. With his slender build, high cheek bones and high fashion choices, he is androgynous yet attractive to a lot of women—and men I bet too. His vibe is vulnerable, artistic, and sensitive. And pretty. I highly doubt he has ever lifted a barbell. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

In music, I would say Harry Styles has become a phenomenon. His 2021-2023 Love On Tour sold about 5 million tickets and grossed over $617 million. Not bad for a then twenty something. He set a record by selling out 20 nights at Madison Square Garden.

He wears dresses, skirts, pearls, lace, nail polish, feather boas, and clothing marketed for women while continuing to identify publicly as a man. He was the first man to appear solo on the cover of Vogue in 2020 while wearing a Gucci dress.

Headlines gush about how he’s “redefining masculinity.” To me, that translates as there is something wrong with traditional masculinity because it is outdated and restrictive.

Millions of young boys and teens imitate his look, which seems to suggest a rejection of conventional manhood.

This isn’t new. David Bowie was gloriously androgynous but he still radiated danger, charisma, and edge.

The difference today is scale and messaging. Feminine or androgynous expression is elevated and celebrated, while traditional masculinity is downplayed, mocked, or labeled “toxic.”

I remember throwing a party years ago. While my friends and I moved heavy furniture to make space, a friend’s pretty-boy boyfriend sat on the couch scrolling on his phone. When I finally asked him to help, he apologized and jumped up. Growing up, that never would have happened. You just grabbed the heavy end of the couch without being asked.

Even lighthearted moments carry the vibe. Sabrina Carpenter, tongue-in-cheek or not, said to songwriters at a Variety event where she was accepting an award—

“Write the music you want to listen to… and call men stupid in as many ways as you can.”

The message seems to be men suck. It’s harmful psychologically for boys and young men to constantly be told they are trash over and over again. This has led to what we now call incels—involuntary celibates like Nick Fuentes.

It has also led to a real sense of hesitation among many teenage boys in particular, to approach girls. They fear embarrassment, rejection, or saying the wrong thing. It’s caused what’s known as a “dating/sex recession.”

Then they get to college and have these mandatory seminars that say if a woman is drinking, don’t touch her. I don’t know about you but the majority of my social interactions with guys in college there was drinking involved. Lots of drinking.

We need to push back and counter that narrative by letting men know they are wanted and appreciated. I am always hugely grateful to men who offer to help me with my luggage on an airplane, which I’d say they do about half the time.

How did this happen? I think changes in parenting styles have contributed.“Helicopter parenting” has done a lot of damage to our children. This constant supervision and protectiveness is really just projecting fear. Children have to learn to develop independence and resilience.

I remember when my daughter was young, there was a boy in her class whose father was the epitome of a helicopter parent. He would sit atop of the slides at the school playground and try to make sure he wouldn’t fall. He actually had him wear one of those harnesses for kids when they went to Disneyland. Also he had to wash his hands incessantly. Needless to say, he ended up in therapy.

A woman I know still has her son in a booster seat. He’s 12 and at least 5 feet tall. Maybe I’m showing my age, but in my day, by 12 you were practically being asked to drive the car, not ride in a booster seat.

At some point, are we protecting kids or infantilizing them? It’s crazy.

Social media has subjected people to criticism from very large audiences. As a result, a lot of us have become cautious, carefully monitoring our every word and opinion. People are afraid to get shamed and called a misogynist, racist or some iteration. The pendulum has swung too far.

There was a need for a #MeToo movement but that too went too far as well. No woman I know wants a guy to ask “May I kiss you?” Just do it!

There is also some pretty disturbing biological data. Average testosterone levels in men have dropped significantly. Studies show it’s about 1% per year since the 1980s, even after adjusting for age. Obesity, sedentary lifestyles, endocrine disruptors, and a culture that shames masculine drive all play roles.

Today, more women than men go to college and graduate. We have record male unemployment and an epidemic of young men checking out via video games, porn, and endless scrolling.

Our education institutions are all about “trigger warnings” and “safe spaces”. When I was growing up, a safe space was under your desk during a nuclear attack drill.

Media and entertainment portray these women who are badass. Who needs a man? Lucy, Salt, Mad Max: Fury Road, Charlie’s Angels, all feature women who can kick ass, but seriously does anyone truly think that Charlize Theron could kick Tom Hardy’s ass?

But I remember the movie Alien where Sigourney Weaver kicked everyone’s ass. I totally bought it. It was actually believable. Plus it was original.

For so many years, most of the shows and movies portrayed women as housewives or supporting characters whose stories revolved around the men in their lives. They cooked and cleaned and occasionally offered advice from the sidelines while the male characters went out and had all the fun.

Even when the women were endowed with these magical abilities like I Dream of Jeanie and Bewitched, the women were subservient to the man. The gender dynamics were wild.

Jeannie literally calls Tony "Master” and spends most of the time trying to please him or win his affection. On the other hand, she is also the most powerful character on the show and actually in the world because she can alter reality with her famous blink. Yet she is kept in a bottle while Tony goes to work as an astronaut. Seems a little BDSM to me. Seriously.

And does anyone really think Samantha from Bewitched would be a homemaker and her husband would ask her to suppress her magical powers? It’s kind of ridiculous when you think about it.

As an aside I read that the writers were all taking LSD while writing that show. I remember objects would come to life, people would swap identities and then they switched the Darrins! Dick Sargent replaced Dick York. They thought we wouldn’t notice!

Now the pendulum has swung in the other direction and most shows and films have “boss girls” like The Devil wears Prada and The Morning Show which depict these hyper-competent, ambitious women who effortlessly outsmart, outrun, and outperform everyone around them. They always have the perfect comeback. And they definitely don’t need any help from men, who are usually portrayed as bufoons.

Boys once did farm work, endured discomfort, and played rough.Now when boys play rough and are high energy, we medicate them. (That’s a subject for a separate post.)

Dodgeball is considered too “violent.” Recess is structured and problems at the playground risks a call to the office. The message today is being tough is toxic, hence the phrase “toxic masculinity.”

“Toxic masculinity” refers to a set of rigid, culturally imposed gender norms that pressure men to act tough, avoid emotional expression, and exert dominance. These harmful behaviors—such as glorifying violence and suppressing mental health issues—limit emotional growth and negatively impact men, women, and society.

Enter Andrew Tate, whom I've written about before but who is worth mentioning again as an example of the figure many young men have gravitated toward as they feel increasingly emasculated.

Masculinity started feeling taboo, so they sought validation elsewhere. We need to get our men back!

There are still plenty of traditionally masculine stars today like Glen Powell, Michael B. Jordan, and Chris Hemsworth.

But even Glen Powell, who is considered the quintessential leading man, gets outmaneuvered by his co-star, Margaret Qualley in How to Make a Killing. She is portrayed as socially superior and savvy, and outmanipulates him at every turn.

A soft society is a fragile one. I abhor war but we need people, men in particular who are fit to serve.

According to recent military and defense estimates, roughly three-quarters of Americans aged 17 to 24 are ineligible to serve in the military, with obesity being one of the biggest disqualifying factors.

This is insane. While women serve admirably, men are better suited for combat.

A society doesn't need every man to be a soldier, but it probably benefits from having ones available who are physically capable if needed to answer the call if necessary.

Then there is the explosion of anxiety and depression diagnoses that require lifelong therapy and medication instead of pushing more for exercise and discipline.

Pussification doesn’t just weaken individuals but it weakens the country. The falling military recruitment standards are just the most glaring statistical example of how our society has been evolving.

Societies thrive when they cultivate both empathy and strength. Men should be encouraged to be protectors and builders, not perpetual victims or emotional support animals.

Boys need challenges, not constant coddling. Parents need to understand that struggling sometimes, losing sometimes, and having to work hard for something are all important parts of growing up.

Not everyone on a sports team needs a medal just for participating. Competition isn’t a bad thing. Learning how to fail, improve, and try again builds character and resilience.

As a society, we should encourage excellence, effort, and personal responsibility instead of rewarding excuses and victimhood.

Women still respond to strength, leadership, and competence. Every woman I know wants a man who can get up in the middle of the night if there’s an intruder.

The same applies to changing a tire, killing a large insect, figuring out why the Wi-Fi stopped working, or carrying the eighty-pound suitcase up three flights of stairs.

It’s not some exaggerated movie version of masculinity. It’s competence. The guy who can stay calm, solve problems, and make people around him feel safe. Confidence and capability is attractive.

We need to quit mocking men who go to the gym, hunt or work with their hands. A healthy society should make room for all kinds of men—the artist, the intellectual, the entrepreneur, the athlete, and the outdoorsman—without acting as though masculinity itself is something embarrassing that needs to be apologized for.

There is no single solution to this but I do think it’s so important to talk about it. We need to foster positive masculinity. We can’t live in a society where men are just like women. We ought to celebrate our differences.

It’s been a decade since the #MeToo movement. We have been hearing ad nauseam about “toxic masculinity.” I think we should try to focus more on “positive masculinity.”

I’m not talking about people hiding COVID symptoms or exposure because they were afraid of getting sick or infecting other people. I’m talking about people who questioned certain policies like masking outdoors, standing six feet apart and walking into a restaurant with a mask only to take it off once seated. Yes we did that.

A lot of them, which included me, felt like people were insane, following this nonsense. I did comply to a degree. I wore the mask when it was required. What I had trouble with was when certain people felt compelled to start telling other people what to do. I’ll never forget a woman at Target screaming at another whose toddler’s mask kept slipping. It was unhinged.

And then came the politics of it all. Politics and health should never be conflated. For instance, anyone wearing a mask who also had their 2-year-old in a stroller masked up outside, was a Democrat. The fact that I knew this for certain is problematic. That’s a topic for a separate post.

I understood the caution in the beginning. We didn’t know much about this virus and people were scared to death and trying to make sense of a rapidly changing situation. But as time went on, I couldn’t believe how many people simply went along with whatever the government told us, as crazy as these arbitrary rules were.

I’ve always wondered how many truly believed it, and how many were simply afraid of standing apart from the crowd? And then some had no choice because of work and travel. No on should have had to be forced to take a vaccine they didn’t want to. It was wrong. My body, my choice across the board. Period.

Groupthink is a powerful force. Human beings have an innate desire to belong. Conformity is almost always the easier path than being the outlier who risks being ridiculed or outright rejected. You crazy conspiracy theorist!

I get it. None of us wants to be rejected by our tribe. But we can look back and see that history reminds us that consensus and truth are not always the same thing.

Let’s not forget one of the more obvious past falsehoods was that the Earth was believed to be the center of the universe. When Galileo supported the idea that the Earth revolves around the Sun, he was found "vehemently suspect of heresy," forced to publicly recant his views, and sentenced to house arrest for the rest of his life.

COVID was like a modern masterclass in this phenomenon. But beyond the sociology, I’m fascinated by the psychology.

People spend an absurd amount of time worrying what other people think. They worry about being judged. Or laughed at. Or saying the wrong thing. It’s unfortunate because we truly have no way of controlling what people think about us, try as hard as we do.

When I’m on a group chat I notice how carefully curated some texts are. Not just a group chat but texts in general. We’ve all seen those 3 dots going and then nothing. Then sometimes those dots go forever until the person is finished agonizing and editing before they hit send. It is possible they had to attend to something else but I think it’s more of the former.

I know people who run a lot of their texts through ChatGPT before they respond. It’s a little much.

The #1 fear people have is public speaking/performing. Johnny Carson, Adele and Barbra Streisand, have all talked about debilitating stage fright.

Some psychologists believe our fear of public speaking goes back to our ancestors. Humans used to live in tight-knit tribes where fitting in was everything. If the group rejected you, it could mean losing food, protection, and safety. Very high stakes.

So standing up to speak in front of the tribe to defend yourself, you would be judged by a council or a tribunal. It was a much more intense form of pressure.

Some believe this fear got wired into us. “I better not mess up!” That’s why you get a racing heart, sweaty hands, and butterflies. Your brain may still be wired for survival. It’s a good theory anyway.

Yet some people seem almost immune to this fear.

Roseanne Barr is one such example. Whether you love her, hate her, or somewhere in between, she speaks her mind and then some.

Some people, including herself, think it’s because she had a brain injury. At 16, she was hit by a car. The hood ornament penetrated her skull, causing a severe traumatic brain injury. She was in a coma and spent months recovering.

She says her personality changed. She became more impulsive, volatile, and unable to tell lies because she couldn’t keep track of them. She joked that “telling the truth is simpler” because she couldn’t remember fabricated stories. Telling the truth is always easier.

I thought it was unfair she lost her show after a mean tweet that she says was not meant to be racist. I believe her and I do think that it was a really harsh punishment to enact on someone who had spent years developing, writing, producing and starring in the show Roseanne.

Her Instagram bio captures it well…

“For decades, she’s said what others were too afraid to say and for just as long she’s been ignored, dismissed or written off. She reflects on being early, being loud, and being right whether people liked it or not. Roseanne breaks down what it means to stand your ground.”

The woman has elephant balls. Whether you agree or disagree with what she says, it’s hard not to admire her.

Something remarkably similar happened to comedian Sam Kinison. When he was three years old, he was hit by a truck and also suffered a severe brain injury. His brother said that before the accident Sam was quiet, gentle, and shy. Afterwards, he became loud, fearless, impulsive, and eventually one of the most outrageous, funny comedians ever.

I was fortunate enough to have met Sam. He was one of the kindest comedians of all. Talk about not judging a book by its cover!

The first night I met him, was at the Laugh Factory, where he sat in the owner’s chair and snorted a three-foot line of cocaine. I am not exaggerating. I thought he might have a heart attack. Far from it. He went onstage and killed. He got a standing ovation. The atmosphere was electric as was he.

He proceeded to buy the entire audience drinks and gave each of the waitresses $100 tips. He was always kind and courteous. I met him again on New Year’s Eve where he passed out in front of the bar.

I went to Sam’s funeral and I have never been to a more entertaining event as perverse as that may sound. Richard Belzer was the emcee and the list of celebrities who attended was unprecedented. Everyone from Robin Williams to Jim Carrey to Charlie Sheen to Mickey Rourke to Dan Akroyd. Robin Williams gave the funniest eulogy I have ever heard. It’s so ironic that Sam was killed by a drunk driver.

Ok back to the topic at large.

Of course, no one can know exactly how much of either person’s personality was shaped by a brain injury. But it does make you wonder how much of our need for approval comes down to the wiring inside our heads. It’s probably a concoction of many factors.

Age probably plays a role too. Most people seem to care less about other people’s opinions as they get older. Donald Trump is the poster child—zero filter, says whatever’s on his mind. No fear of repercussions because often there aren’t any.

It's pretty rare not to give a shit. I think a modern day equivalent is someone like Dave Chappelle who keeps telling controversial jokes despite the backlash.

He is solely interested in saying what he believes is funny than in making sure everyone approves. That's a rare quality in a world where so many public figures carefully calculate every word for fear of being canceled or hurting their "brand." And the word most people associate with Dave Chappelle is cool. Something to think about.

Many other famous people are quite the opposite. Their entire careers depend on public approval. Their livelihoods and self-worth are based on it. Every interview, every Instagram post, and every public statement is carefully curated.

Taylor Swift rarely does unscripted interviews. Her public statements are meticulously timed and controlled. She releases them through social media or documentaries rather than live interviews. She controls her image by making sure not to say something “off brand.”

Ryan Reynolds is always the same guy. He tries ever so hard to be witty, self-deprecating, and promotional. Also to me, inauthentic. His interviews seem very controlled. He has to maintain his “brand,” whatever that means. I guess it’s what people expect of you. Anytime someone becomes a “brand” they lose credibility and authenticity. Better make sure that merger goes through.

He bought about a 25% ownership of Mint Mobile and then when T-Mobile bought Mint's parent company for $1.35 billion, he made around $300 million. He’s no dummy—I’ll give him that.

So then his “persona” became inseparable from the product. Family man, accessible, slightly sarcastic, doesn’t take himself too seriously—except he does.

Then in a league of their own are the Kardashians. Their entire multi-billion-dollar empire, is dependent upon public obsession. I have to give it to them—it’s been 19 years since Keeping Up with the Kardashians aired on October 14, 2007. And there are people still obsessing. Why? I couldn’t tell you.

They are the connoisseurs of how to market your “brand.” They edit photos, scrub the internet of unapproved images, and actually pivot their businesses based entirely on these focus groups and “fan feedback.” Living like that cannot be easy. Sounds like hell to me actually.

Kim Kardashian told Vanity Fair she spends 2-3 hours a day in a hair and makeup chair. Her career depends on maintaining a flawless image. To me, that sounds mentally exhausting, and a hollow way to spend so much of your life. It must get old.

Here’s the irony. When you care too much, people sense the fear. It often backfires. Authenticity reads as strength while curation can read as insecurity. Being blasé is actually very attractive sometimes.

We all care what other people think of us or we wouldn’t be human. It’s just some of us care a hell of a lot more than others. Some people let one mean comment or awkward moment ruin their day. They replay it over and over, worrying about how they’re seen. Others seem to brush it off more easily. They have a thicker skin. They still notice, but it doesn’t control them.

People who poke fun at you with what they think is humorous is more about them trying to score points, look clever and get attention by making someone else the punchline. A lot of the time, sarcasm is just disguised insecurity. Just let their words hang.

Try caring less. Not in a cold, “I don’t care about anyone” way — that’s not healthy. But in a freer way. Realize that for the most part, people are too busy thinking about themselves to judge you as harshly as you think. And even if they do judge you, their opinion usually says more about them than about you.

Caring less takes practice. Over time and with age, it gets easier. You start living more for yourself and less for the imaginary audience in your head.

We’ll never stop caring completely, nor should we. But when you care less about other people’s opinions, life gets a lot more fun. And life is supposed to be fun! Otherwise what’s the point?
