The Full Sturgeon Moon Lunar Eclipse in Virgo peaked Friday at midnight, the moment when the darkest light kisses other realms. Where the old timeline softly touches the new and begins penetrating the dawn of a new era. And if you felt this energy stretch into your relationships specifically, you’re right on time. That’s the medicine permeating to the layers where it matters most. It’s no coincidence that this lunar eclipse landed during the exact week Virgo season opened and joined the Sturgeon moon which, according to the Algonquin, is the time of year where the Great Lakes finally give something back after a long summer. Couple that with the Sturgeon being an ancient fish and Pisces being symbolized by two fish, there’s a medicine arising from the depths of the ocean and our own psyche. To that point, everyone in your life is reflecting something back whether you asked for it or not. Something deeper than the the surface.

The lunar eclipse is astronomically formed when the Earth orbits between the Sun and the Moon. This eclipse is partial, and the diagram below does a perfect job of illustrating that happening. Astrologically, Lunar eclipses shine a light on the innermost part of ourselves. They bring what’s been buried deep by your shadow or your blindspots to the forefront. Resolving what’s revealed is your job. Whatever’s still lit up in the days following the peak is typically asking to be worked with slowly, over the weeks and months that follow. Pay attention to what’s exciting or repulsing you about the very fabric of your current reality. Your structures, your routine, where you’re finding satisfaction or where you feel discontent.

The worksheet below is conjured for that slower part. It moves through four beats:

1. What’s currently holding weight in your closest relationship dynamics versus what’s just surviving on good intentions alone

2. How much conflict a relationship can sincerely hold before it becomes the whole weather instead of just a passing storm

3. The PEMDAS for a hard conversation so that it actually lands

4. What happens when distance (intentional or circumstantial) tests the agreement to move toward someone or away from them.

This is designed for you to return to more than once this season. Think of it like a tool to work through solo, with your partner, or a tough friendship you feel “stuck” on, as a check to see if the systems you’re building are actually working for everyone involved.

It reminds me of PEMDAS, the Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally / Order of Operations we learned in grade school maths. Applied here, it sustains the fact that knowledge doesn’t just get released, it relies on the right sequence, the right people, and the right timing. Otherwise it stops being knowledge and starts being extraction.

I work alongside many cultures and I continue receiving invitations into these worldviews since I can revere a system as sacred because of what’s withheld from me, not despite it. This is the actual shape Sacred Relationship takes, with land, with elemental and land spirits, with people. When I first moved to Tucson I navigated a real sense of isolation. I only visited Arizona once before and it was more south than where I was living. It was a slow introduction to feeling like I belonged amongst a geography I had no ancestral ties to. It took months of solo camping and learning the terrain before I felt like I understood where I landed. It took sincere moments of showing up in service by feeding the senior citizens in South Tucson before I felt settled in the worldview that shaped the city itself. Nothing sustainable is built by skipping to the end.

Details of Uluru

In the heart of Australia, Uluru emerges at about 1,142 feet above ground, but geologists estimate roughly 1.5 miles of the formation is below the surface. Some estimates for the surrounding rock slab are even deeper than that. The photos shown here are just a small percentage of what’s actually there. Uluru itself is the embodiment of Virgo season, surface-level was never the point. Access to what's underground isn't rushed either. It takes the same kind of time a human relationship does. The formation is made of Arkose sandstone that was formed over 550 million years ago so to call this site ancient would seriously undersell it.

The Tjukurpa Boundary

We can’t learn about Uluru without honoring the PEMDAS it emerged from. This sacred site has been stewarded by Anangu (Aboriginal Ngura to what we know as Australia) tradition and worldview from the very beginning. For thousands of years the Anangu have made their home in the lands holding Uluru and their daily lives revolve around Tjukurpa, the ancestral period when the world was being formed. There are parts of Tjukurpa that are restricted; sometimes by gender, sometimes by site, sometimes by initiation station etc. It’s not my role to explain, describe, or gesture around those boundaries, but to investigate what those boundaries are communicating to us and to remind us that boundaries are filters that purify our curiosity.

These boundaries help us understand where our cultures disconnect and how that difference isn’t a point of negotiation. This is the Sacred Relationship I experienced when I first relocated to Tucson. Respecting a no is essential to understanding the boundaries of a whole people. It’s also a reminder that some knowledge exists to keep a land-relationship intact across generations. It’s an inheritance of those whose bodies emerged from that soil with their own technology and bodily wisdom. Circulating that wisdom on someone else’s timeline breaks the very thing it set to protect.

The timeline above shows how many years it took for instructions Anangu gave from the very start to actually be respected by outsiders. A list can’t properly showcase the weight of these instructions being ignored for decades, the lives lost, the families fragmented. Uluru is a sacred site meant to hold the echo of ancestral memory and it’s now been tainted by the pain of disregarding traditions older than colonialism. At least 36 deaths since the 1950s, dozens of medical rescues, and the sting of having Anangu wisdom dismissed as primitive superstition.

This was patience functioning as sovereignty. Thirty-four years of the same instructions finally honored on the exact anniversary they were first given. That’s a kind of power that reflects the depth of land-stewardship and wisdom the Anangu embody. Something they understood for generations is finally seeping into the mind of foreigners they never asked to be there. It took several unnecessary deaths to arrive at a conclusion the Anangu already understood; this is a permeating theme in the relationship between the Indigenous and Colonial-minded foreigners. The timeline of this ban is proof that when seeking UNESCO world heritage sites or any landmark emerging from a tradition you’re outside of, a PEMDAS is essential. Are you traveling for vanity and some sense of egoic pride? Or are you truly interested in expanding your map of all that is (and has been) possible on this Earth?

Anything Sustainable is Built Slowly

Real relationships are built slowly, without forcing entry into what hasn’t been offered. Sacred sites require that same consideration. Uluru didn’t need outsiders to understand everything about it to be worth protecting. It needed outsiders to slow down and stop needing to understand everything before they adhere to the wisdom of generations before their arrival. Discernment isn’t just about sifting what’s useful from what isn’t. Sometimes it’s about sorting what’s yours to know from what isn’t, and having the patience to be at peace with the difference.

This season’s Sacred Site is one I haven’t visited either. In September I’ll be in Samarkand, Uzbekistan for the AA VS Climate Cartographies program. It’s a visiting school and research initiative that investigates the long-term impacts of climate change on historical and heritage sites through experimental cartography, film, sound, and creative spatial practices. One of the (many) confirmed stops is what’s left of the Ulugh Beg Observatory. While there, I’ll be speaking alongside many instructors on what it means to preserve the worldview of the land and people that gave birth to these sacred sites. What follows is everything I’ve compiled before my visit. I’ll come back in the fall with details about what it’s like from inside.

A prince who lost interest in conquest

Mīrzā Muhammad Tarāghāy bin Shāhrukh, better known as Ulugh Beg, was born March 22, 1394 in Soltaniyeh, Persia, now Iran. He’s the grandson of Timur, known as Tamerlane in the West, the conqueror whose empire stretched from Delhi to Damascus. As a child he basically lived a nomadic life, traveling with his grandfather’s army. On one campaign he ended up standing in the ruins of the Maragheh Observatory, built more than a hundred years earlier by the astronomer Nasir al-Din al Tusi. That visit marked him, burrowing somewhere in his psyche and texturing what would become his legacy. By the time turned fifteen, his father Shah Rukh crowned him ruler of Samarkand and the wider region of Mā warāʾ al-nahr, “what lies beyond the river in Arabic, or Farārūd, “beyond the river” in Persia. This region was also referenced as Transoxiana by Alexander the Great and the Greek troops. He was keen on at least one part of the job and unfortunately, it wasn’t the part that allowed him to keep the throne.

In 1417, at 23, he not only built a madrasa in Samarkand (on what’s now Registan Square), but he made mathematics and astronomy central subjects in a way other madrasas of the period overlooked. Three years later he broke ground and began building the observatory itself, the project took most of a decade to complete. It was finished about 1428, and by then this 108 feet-tall project (about 3 stories) was erected. It was cylindrical and about 150 feet wide. It held a meridian arc, part of what’s known as the Fakhri sextant, emerging from the rock to keep it stable against seismic movement. It’s marble parapets calibrated in degrees and minutes along a curve that traced the length of the entire building. Some researches claim the arc’s length was close to 206 feet, either way it was the largest instrument of its kind ever built. Some sources give the arc’s length near sixty-three meters. Ulugh Beg was 34 upon it’s completion, mind you.

Greatness is a Team Sport

None of this was Ulugh Beg’s solitary doing. Sure, by 34 he had enough vision to conduct something that I’m writing about in 2026, but it took scores of people to execute. I’m slowing that bit down because it’s part of what makes this sacred site an easy pick for Leo season. Ulugh Beg had enough vision to gather the best minds of his era and provided them with the resources to create something of this scale. Jamshid al-Kashi, a Persian astronomer who calculated the sine of one degree to a precision of ten decimal places using methods that wouldn’t be achieved in Europe for hundreds of years. Qadi Zada al-Rumi, a prominent Persian astronomer and mathematician. Ali Qushji, who would later tote this observatory’s methods to the Ottoman court after everything here collapsed, becoming one of the threads that silently connects Islamic astronomy to what Europe would eventually add to.

Together they produced the Zij-i Sultani, a beacon 15th century treatise and star catalog notating about a thousand stars and their positions, along with trigonometric tables (their coordinates) of extraordinary accuracy. It was the first mainstream catalog, built entirely from new observation since the Ptolemaic era, 13 centuries earlier. Read that again, please. 200 years after Ulugh Beg’s death, English astronomers were still checking their work against the Zij-i Sultani in the 17th century.

Sovereignty spun upward, not outward

Leo energy is a reminder of the empire we build with the cards we’re given, especially when those cards were an afterthought. Even though Ulugh Beg inherited an empire forged by conquest, he saw it as ample opportunity to turn his focus toward the upward, toward the sky. Using his resources he sought the some of the brightest minds of his era and conjured instruments, star tables, and a school where astronomy held as much weight as Islamic studies. This is Leo’s fixed fire when it’s in its most sovereign form, a hearth that warms a nation; devotion that reaches beyond politcal allegiance and impacts humanity for centuries to come. Ulugh Beg himself was an Aries Sun with a Leo Moon.

There wasn’t much glory nor reward for all of this during his life. He finally became the Sultan in 1447 after his father Shah Rukh’s death (of causes related to old age) and two years later his own son Abdul Latif had him beheaded. Perhaps Ulugh Beg’s love for astronomy made him appear weak to rebelling forces because he had a reputation of being poor in the political and military arena. After losing battle after battle and with him newly succeeding the throne, his son spearheaded a rebellion where Ulugh BEg was captured and beheaded. Sad ting, dat. Not long after his beheading his observatory was destroyed by people who saw it as heresy rather than a scientific breakthrough.

A few years later in 1450 Ulugh Beg’s nephew, Abdallah Mirza restored his honor and restored his reputation. He moved his remains to Timur’s mausoleum in Samarkand before being dethroned himself in 1451. Even with this, the exact location of the observatory itself was erased until 1908 when an archaeologist names V.L. Vyatkin uncovered the buried section of the arc, ready to read it after 500 forgotten years.

This is sovereignty. This is devotion carried past the point of survival. A death, a burial, a rediscovery centuries later because what was built was so essential that someone spent years intentionally looking for it. Leo season’s job is to locate and name that pattern and this sacred site makes it easy to do so.

The broader Renaissance

This is just a single weave from a broader renaissance of this period. Ulugh Beg’s court was part of what’s sometimes known as Central Asia’s second Eastern Renaissance, or the Timurid Renaissance. A period when Bukhara, Samarkand, and the broader Timurid world were creating breakthroughs in mathematics, astronomy, and architecture while Europe was still in the late middle ages, generations away from it’s own version of those breakthrough. This was also during the early stages of the Italian Renaissance.

The observatory was part of a tapestry with a wider lineage too, Maragheh was built a century before it, and the broader Caliphate period of Islamic astronomy that already began refining Ptolemy’s work for generations before Ulugh Beg drafted the plans for the Samarkand Observatory. He was just the recent thread in a weave that laid the foundation. His thread was the example of what was possible when the king’s full attention and resources were directed toward the sky.

From outside the site

This piece is research, not a testimony. I haven’t visited the arc, touched the soil, tasted the food, or stood in the hold where a king used to measure starlight before his son beheaded him. What’s shared here is what the records reveal, and what they reveal is certainly enough to earn this site its place in a season designed for sovereignty and all its costs.

In September I’m heading to Uzbekistan so the follow up piece I write won’t be a correction of this one. It’ll be what changes when research enters the body and integrates through the senses. As this space became my home, the memory of the echoing silence faded. I made sure that a new Nectar memory foam bed arrived before I landed in Tucson, then a small black computer desk. I kept both for the entire six years. Soon after, the kitchenware came, reshaping the space with scent. Somewhere in all the iterations of my home, that desk became one of my altar spaces, this practical furniture had graduated into something more sacred. At some point, amongst all the gathering, the echo went quiet. There was enough in the room to catch the sound before it came back to me.

This reshaped and full sound became the textures of home.

When it was time to pack up I was surprised by how immediate the sound reverted back to those early days.

It wasn’t just removing things, but even rearranging them shifted the soundscape of my home. As if shifting clay on a sculpture. I typically regard my home as a gallery, moving around artifacts and paintings seasoning, but I’ll admit, it usually took an excess of energy before I shifted furniture specifically. So once we moved into full on packing mode the sound moved drastically, box by box. I cleared a shelf and I heard a wall again for the first time in months. Clearing a closet of old clothes felt like making more space in my emotional body. Like getting rid of old nervous systems. I sold what I could but I gave a lot of stuff away. To be honest, I wanted to focus on my mourning and my grief. The growing emptiness curving around whatever was left, hallowing out the space. The reverb of my voice growing with every removed or packed item. An emptying of my thoughts. I’d lived in this space for SIX years. So many versions, heartbreaks, epiphanies, wins, losses, orgasms, good eats… this home was my best friend in a lot of ways. By the last week there were rooms that sounded exactly like they did six years ago, but the walls changed. They held more memory.

My animist worldview believes everything has a soul or a level of consciousness and it was such an honor to learn more about stewarding myself via stewarding my home. Learning when it needed to be burped by opening the windows, learning which spaces within the home needed plant life and which ones wanted to remain empty etc. The stuff we gather into a space isn’t just stuff, it’s insulation. They’re an extension of our own soul and they’re the bridge/connection between our own field and the soul of a space.

Moving cross-country with all my assets and cat was a real brain teaser in the beginning but somewhere along the way my partner and I fell into a blissful problem-solving obsession.

What Actually Made This Move Easier

By the end of it, I didn’t need a moving truck at all. My car was packed and ready to be shipped. I used UPS to ship my iMac separately. All I carried was three stuffed suitcases and one extremely unimpressed cat that had never flown and likely wouldn’t want to again.

My partner made several trips out during that last stretch, and left each time carrying more than they arrived with. That help was such a blessing and made the actual move day go 100x smoother. I would likely still be asleep if I had to drive a truck, haul my car, and entertain my cat.

Those final days were filled with excitement and anxiety. Random flare ups of grief and random bursts of orange colored joy. I still largely feel like I’m between two timezones. Properly grieving the old is what makes space for the new. My partner being alongside me, helping me pack, hearing all my stories, sharing space with me, made the grief lighter. Made that orange joy more vibrant. Two people make a different kind of sound that just one person hearing her own steps echo back to her so I’m really glad this didn’t end on a solo note. It was tough to sort through all my clothes and artifacts that carried psychic imprints and memories so having Kayla pick things up and say “Keep, go with me, or toss?” made decisiveness that much easier.

As a counter-cartographer and astrocartographer, I read other people’s maps for work. Countless sessions a year, translating someone’s agreements with the Earth back to them, decoding what the urgency of those agreements. My own long term move took longer than a 90 minute session.

For two years I was in negotiation with the land spirits in Georgia. I had to get clear on why my time in Tucson was ending, not just that it was. And I had to get exact about what a relocation needed to provide before I’d say yes to it. I approached like a sports draft, what do I need in my contract in order for me to accept being moved to a different Leyline? Finances. Camping. A spacious home. Aligned community. Secure love. How much ease I needed to move everything I owned, and my cat, across the country without it breaking me. Every one of those requests got met, and then some.

The two years in between were me loosening my grip on the life I’d built in Tucson, one finger at a time. It’s a real astrologically charged move too, from a Uranus line to a city that sits right between my Venus and Mars line. From the zoom out to the zoom in. That part created a bit of hesitation. What if the structures I’d built in the Sonoran Desert couldn’t hold once I moved to the Rainforest? In the desert, things thrive with space and the internal mechanism of their own structures. In the rainforest there’s an undeniable interconnectedness and overflow that could seriously overwhelm and flood me. What if the zoom in cost me the plot of my own zoom out?

I spent those two years confronting those questions and the places they lived in my body. Slowing brewing medicine, tinctures, and remedies for them one at a time. Massaging them out. There’s so much wisdom in our resistance. It just wanted to show me its concerns and taking my time addressing them didn’t eliminate stress entirely but it prevented me from burning out, I’m sure. I visited Atlanta six times in 2025 before moving during the Buck Moon in Aquarius (my natal moon sign). Doing the kind of field work that doesn’t show up on a moving checklist, visiting many octaves and realms and see how much seeds the soil could hold. And now I’m here. I’ve been sleeping so well.

I’m finally on the timeline I actually prefer, every real need met, ready to be of service to this place and whatever deeper collaboration comes next.

I don’t know yet what Atlanta’s echo sounds like empty. Moving into a furnished space allows me to skip that step but I think it also reflects that I’m not starting over, I’m building on what I’ve conjured thus far.

I didn’t come here for any one building or address, it’s a density I can feel before I can name it. You know, I believe cities go through cycles and there’s something being activated here that I’ve agreed to participate in. Something that’s been being charged, seeded, watered, lonngggg before my arrival. And still, this land wants me here at this stage, to participate in the something and the reshaping of sound thats happening now. I’m energized to learn about the indigenou energies here, the Muscogee land, the same way I learned from the Tohono.

I’m bringing six years of desert cartography to the rainforest. Camping all over Georgia is already high on the list. I need to learn this land and its soil, not just live on top of it. I’m looking forward to more speaking engagements too, rooms where this work gets spoken out loud, not confined to the page or a social media post. I’m also looking forward to hosting more community events. I’m a yapper and a listener I need more face time with people whose medicine touches mine.

Slight pivot but I wrote about slow-burn relationships once, a piece that’s still one of the most-read pieces I’ve published, all about letting a relationship bloom with patience and space. I didn’t know when I wrote it that I’d end up living the next chapter of my own argument so soon. My partner and I spent most of this relationship long-distance between Tucson and Atlanta, and now we live less than twenty minutes apart, inside our own map with a new one expanding in all directions around us. Living separately (clap for not u-hauling). Charting a map of this new city right alongside someone, integrating just how far our choosing each other has gotten us, and how far it will take us… THAT has been such a grounding force for my heart and all of my nerves.

Growing up in a strict Muslim household with a deeply homophobic mother, I learned early what the word “dyke” could do. She used it like a rock, thrown at anything in me that wasn’t soft enough, feminine enough, compliant enough. The word was raceless in her mouth. It didn’t matter who you were. If you weren’t performing femininity correctly, you were a dyke.

So when the conversation started trending on social media about racializing the word, about claiming it as exclusively Black, I genuinely struggled to follow the logic. I understand reclamation. What I don’t understand is fighting over which slur is ours when we already have a word that was built specifically for us.

Stud. That word traces back to 1965, when Ethel Sawyer’s sociological study of a Black lesbian community in St. Louis found that masculine Black lesbians were already using it to name themselves, distinct from butch, distinct from dyke, specific to the particular weight of being Black and masculine and woman in the same body at the same time. That precision was intentional. It named something butch couldn’t hold.

Why are we giving that up to argue over a slur? Especially when that argument, at its root, is Stockholm syndrome with better aesthetics.

What Stud Culture Is Actually Built On

Stud culture, at its root, is founded on a kind of womanhood that is deeply feminine.

Not feminine in the performed, decorative sense. Feminine in the way the earth does it. The earth doesn’t announce itself. It doesn’t ask permission to be generative. It holds, it cycles, it receives and releases, it knows when to flood and when to dry, it guides through consequence rather than command. What we call the earth’s power isn’t soft in the diminished sense of the word. It’s patient and total and inevitable.

This is where the case needs to be made, and I want to make it plainly: nothing is inherently masculine. Everything is inherently feminine. Even what we recognize as healthy masculinity operates within a feminine intelligence. The arm is not separate from the body it extends from. The river is not separate from the ground that shapes its course.

This isn’t a fringe spiritual position. It’s documented governance.

Among the Akan people of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, the king cannot be designated without the queen mother’s approval. She holds the maternal royal lineage. The Asantehene is her instrument. His authority derives from hers, not the other way around. In the Kingdom of Dahomey, the Kpojito exercised parallel mystical and political power alongside the king and retained authority in capital cases, pleading before the throne on behalf of those condemned. She still holds a position of influence within the kingdom’s great council today. In ancient Kemet, Queen Tiye corresponded directly with foreign diplomats and functioned as what some scholars have called the world’s first Secretary of State. King Amenhotep III did not diminish her authority. He built her a lake and a temple in Nubia, the first time such an honor had been extended to a queen. The Akan cosmological framework holds that “Obaatanpa Onyankopɔn,” God the good mother, is the primary divine address. The earth itself, Asaase, is understood as the feminine principle from which all governance and sustenance derive.

The arm does not govern the body. The body governs the arm.

When we understand masculinity this way, as a function that operates within a larger feminine intelligence rather than in opposition to or above it, the question of what stud culture is “supposed” to look like changes entirely. The performance of patriarchal masculinity isn’t us stepping into power. It’s us severing the arm from the body and calling it freedom.

As far back as the 1950s, Black studs were navigating a landscape where masculinity largely meant carefully mimicking Black male presentation, three-piece suits and a perfectly coiffed femme on the arm, a performance of dominance that mirrored what they’d watched men in their communities do. Scholars who’ve studied this argue that stud masculinity was a strategic construction, a way of gaining some level of male privilege as a defense mechanism against the triple weight of racism, homophobia, and misogyny. It made sense then, and for many of us those conditions haven’t dissolved. We are still navigating all three. The survival intelligence that built this presentation is real, and in many contexts, still necessary.

But survival intelligence and freedom are not the same thing. And a lot of what got built for survival has calcified into expectation.

Taisha McMickens’s study of stud representation in Black queer web series names it directly: stud misogyny is tethered to histories of the patriarchal gaze on Black women’s bodies, and it calls us to rethink masculinities outside of the colonial imagination.

Mmm!! Yes!! That seeps into the skin. Outside of the colonial imagination. Because the masculinity that a lot of studs are performing isn’t self-authored. It’s inherited from the same framework that harmed us.

Let Me Give It to You Straight

A lot of studs, dykes, butches, and mascs are forfeiting their connection to their wombs. And the womb, understood not just anatomically but energetically and creatively, is the seat of their power. When you abandon it, you don’t become more masculine. You become less whole.

I’m not speaking to trans men here, or to the dysphoric dissociation that comes with a body that doesn’t map to your identity. That experience is specific and valid and deserves its own conversation. I’m speaking directly to the masculine-presenting lesbians who are not trans men, who are landlocking themselves into modes of masculinity that are stifling even to the males who embody them.

Here’s what I’ve watched happen, from experience and from observation.

Many studs are genuinely unfamiliar with their own menstrual cycle, unable to distinguish between the menstruation phase, the follicular phase, ovulation, and the luteal phase., having such intense mood swings during the luteal phase that maintaining relationships becomes a task. They have undiagnosed PCOS that no one ever investigated because they stopped going to the OBGYN. They’re carrying untouched mother wounds from being rejected by the womb that gave birth to them, and they’ve built an entire identity around never needing anything from anyone — which is not strength. It’s grief that got incorporated. There are infrequent OBGYN visits, infrequent awareness of blood work and hormonal levels, a disinterest in the body that reads as masculine nonchalance but is actually a form of self-abandonment.

And then there’s the pattern of funneling creative, generative, magnetic energy outward toward more feminine-presenting partners, rather than working with it directly. The stud becomes the source of attention and protection and provision while quietly outsourcing her own beauty, her own desire, her own becoming. Her partner receives what was supposed to be hers first.

There is nothing like a mother’s love. And a lot of these lesbian dynamics are recreating mother wounds instead of being genuinely sapphic.

Audre Lorde saw this coming. In Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power (1978), she writes that the erotic is a resource within each of us that lies in a deeply female and spiritual plane, firmly rooted in the power of our unexpressed or unrecognized feeling. She argues that we have been taught to suspect this resource, and that in suppressing it, we don’t gain strength. We gain an illusion of strength fashioned within the context of male models of power.

Performing masculine nonchalance about your own body isn’t strength. It’s a costume worn over an unexamined wound.

Alexis Pauline Gumbs’s dissertation is titled We Can Learn to Mother Ourselves: The Queer Survival of Black Feminism. Her co-edited volume Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Front Lines asks who gets to claim the interiority of mothering and who has been told that capacity doesn’t belong to them. Studs are not exempt from that question. We are, in fact, at its center.

The Internal Policing Erodes the Shores of What We Set Out to Do

The recent emergence of “soft stud” as a category, and the simultaneous pedestaling of its imagined opposite, reproduces the same binary we were supposedly stepping away from. Softness, emotionality, and tenderness get objectified in femmes, while those same qualities are met with suspicion or contempt when expressed by other masculine-presenting women. How is that different from the men who only extend compassion to their mothers, their sisters, and the women they want to sleep with?

Many Black lesbians adopt heteronormative roles specifically to seem more palatable to the broader Black community. That’s respectability politics. And it costs us ourselves.

Then there are the studs who think it’s too gay for a stud to date another stud, who think it’s too gay for a man to be bisexual, who are themselves gay. These are people who have found safety inside patriarchal structures by performing a version of masculinity that aligns them with the system that would prefer they didn’t exist at all. They’re no different from minorities who look down on other minorities. Poor people who get a little money and shit on the lower class. They’ve aligned themselves with the thing that’s killing them.

Katherine McKittrick’s Demonic Grounds is instructive here. McKittrick argues that Black women are not passive recipients of their surroundings, and that the body itself is a terrain that produces multiple, different geographic stories. When stud culture performs masculinity by evacuating feminine intelligence from itself, it’s doing a version of that dispossession voluntarily, surrendering the cartography of its own interior

This Is Cancer’s Work, Carried Into Leo

Cancer season holds the mother archetype. The interior. The seat. The home you carry with you regardless of where you’re standing. Cancer’s polarity is Capricorn — the father archetype, the season of structure, discipline, long-term vision, and building something that outlasts the moment. These two signs are always in conversation. The mother and the father. The private interior and the public standing.

But this piece publishes at the threshold of Leo season. And that matters. Leo is where the interior becomes visible. Where the womb work you’ve been doing in private starts to demand a stage. Leo is creative authority, is radiance, is the question of what you’re bringing into the light now that you’ve done the interior work. Cancer built the foundation. Leo asks what you’re building on top of it.

For studs, dykes, butches, and mascs who have outsourced their feminine intelligence and performed only the Capricorn-facing side of provision and protection, this is the invitation not just inward but forward. Integrate both polarities. Carry both. Stop handing one of them to your partner to hold while you perform the other.

And what it gives you is not comfort, exactly. It’s something more like accuracy.

Angelica came to our session carrying three places that had been doing something particular to her body for months, that wordless, recurring pull that doesn’t come from wanting. One was in Guyana. One was a city in the American South she couldn’t explain. And one was Panama. She hadn’t booked a flight to any of them. She hadn’t told anyone because it didn’t feel like information yet. It felt like weather.

We opened her astrocartography map and there it was: her Moon line, specifically the IC angle, arcing through the isthmus of Panama. Striking right through that narrow bridge of land between the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. What she’d been feeling for months wasn’t random. It was a psycho-geographical conversation already in progress. My job isn’t to create that relationship. It’s to translate it.

The Four Angles — What Each One Activates

A Moon line isn’t one line. It’s four, each one corresponding to a different angle of your natal chart and a different register of emotional activation. And they show up at least dozens of times throughout your entire map. The table below is a starting point. The lived experience is always more specific than any framework can hold.

Angelica’s Moon was on the IC. Which means the place that had been calling her for months was not calling her toward rest. It was calling her toward the deepest layer of excavation the map offers.

What the Moon Line Actually Requires

Moon lines are responsive. They’re not static frequencies you either benefit from or don’t. They change depending on what you bring to them: how clear your intention is, how honest you’re willing to be about what you need, and how prepared your emotional body is to receive what the land has available.

Traveling without intention can distort the medicine. A Moon line that activates grief without a prepared container becomes a loop: emotional stagnation, pining, overthinking every detail of the trip instead of being inside it. The line is only part of the story. Your relationship to the land, and to yourself inside it, is the container.

I ask every client to come to their Moon Lines session with at least three places they’re persistently feeling a mutual pull toward. Because the psycho-geographical conversation is already happening before I translate it. And researching those places, not just the logistics but the history, who tended the land, what it’s held and what it’s lost, is part of how you prepare to be received by it.

Some containers are better for some kinds of work than others. That’s not a failure of the line. It’s information.

Something in me has been sharpening all week.

Not agitation exactly, more like the particular quality of attention that arrives before something clarifies. The kind of sharpening that happens when you’ve been avoiding a question and the question finally stops waiting politely. I’ve been noticing it in sessions, in my own practice, in the way certain conversations have a different texture this June than they did a month ago. Something in the collective field has been building pressure and I wanted to name it before the moon peaks, because naming it changes what you can do with it.

The Strawberry Moon rises on June 29th at 8°15 Capricorn, full and exact. The Algonquin, the Ojibwe, the Dakota, the Lakota named this lunation for the wild strawberry harvest, the shortest picking season in the year. Not because strawberries are rare, but because the window to catch them at their ripest is genuinely brief. Miss the window and the fruit goes. The name is practical knowledge encoded as poetry, a reminder that ripeness doesn’t wait, and that attention to the right thing at the right moment is its own form of intelligence. The name traveled across nations precisely because it was useful, not decorative.

We just crossed the summer solstice. We’re sitting at the zenith of solar energy right now, the longest day behind us, the slow descent toward fall beginning underneath everything even though it doesn’t feel that way yet. The impression you leave at this moment, the decisions you make, the things you finally say or finally stop tolerating, those carry a particular weight. They’re the ones that shape the descent.

And then there’s the astrology, which on June 29th is doing something worth paying full attention to.

Mercury stations retrograde at 26°15 Cancer on June 29th at 10:35 am PT, the exact same day as the full moon. The same day Jupiter moves out of Cancer and into Leo. Three significant astrological events in a single twenty-four hour window, all of them pointing at the same territory: what you’ve been conjuring, what you’ve been protecting, and what happens when the thing you’ve been building finally gets seen.

Mercury retrograde in Cancer doesn’t behave like Mercury retrograde in Gemini or Virgo. This isn’t about contracts, logistics, or communication technology acting up, though those things may still happen. Cancer Mercury moves through the emotional interior. It asks what you’ve been telling yourself about what’s happening in your relationships, your home, your creative life. It asks whether your internal narrative matches the actual conditions of your life. And it has a particular relationship with psychic territory, which is the thing I want to spend the rest of this piece on.

Because here’s what I’ve learned from sitting with people through their charts and their lives: your ability to perceive the more-than-human world is directly tied to how honestly you’re engaging this one.

The way I understand psychic territory, and the way I work with it in sessions, it’s not a separate layer of reality you access by getting quiet enough or spiritually advanced enough. It’s continuous with ordinary perception. The same faculty that reads a room when you walk in, that knows something is off before anyone says a word, that senses the particular weight a certain place puts on your chest: that faculty is the same one doing the subtler work. They’re not different mechanisms. They’re the same instrument operating at different frequencies.

Which means the instrument gets compromised when you’re lying to yourself.

Not dramatic lying. The ordinary kind. Performing alignment while privately abandoning yourself. Calling something fine when your body has already registered that it isn’t. Staying in something past the point you already know, because the timing is inconvenient, because you don’t want to cause a disruption, because the discomfort of the known territory feels more survivable than the discomfort of what’s actually for you.

I’ve watched people leave the in-between too soon. The liminal space of real change is still and it asks something of you. To dream there, to rest there, to eat well there, to let your clarity rebuild itself in the quiet. But the stillness feels like nothing is happening, so they go back to what’s familiar. And that be the problem.

The clarity of your self-concept is the texture of your boundary.

When you’re clear about what you are and what you’re building, the boundary is specific, detailed, and recognizable. When you’re unclear, the boundary becomes general and porous, and the signal gets noisy. Things that shouldn’t have access to your energy start finding their way in. Not because you’re weak but because the perimeter isn’t defined enough to know what it’s protecting.

Mercury retrograde in Cancer is asking you to tend that perimeter. To notice where you’ve let something in that you’d already decided wasn’t for you. To ask whether the emotional labor you’re currently performing is labor you actually chose, or labor that accumulated while you were busy not saying no.

This retrograde will put you in rooms where your integrity is on the table. In the face of financial pressure. In the face of being misunderstood. In the face of people making their urgency your emergency. And the thing worth writing down before you find yourself in one of those rooms is this: honoring the boundary first and considering the inconvenience of that reality later is not cruelty. It’s accuracy. Self-respect means the boundary comes before the explanation, not after.

Think of it like building a firewall. Not because a virus has already gotten in. Because you know one’s coming and you’re choosing to be ready.

A guide leads the way through Kabeho, past old spears once carried by the people who kept watch here, and down to where the Katonga runs alongside a smaller river called the Kachinga. Visitors wash there. Not a symbolic gesture, an actual practice, hands and faces and feet in real water, before anyone is allowed to climb the hill toward the earthworks themselves. The water comes first because the people who still tend this place believe you don’t approach something sacred carrying whatever you walked in with.

I learned about this place while researching Cancer season, looking for somewhere that could hold the way water, protection, and inheritance get built into stone and earth. What I found instead was something better than a parallel. Bigo is the largest ancient earthwork ever recorded anywhere in sub-Saharan Africa, a system of ditches and embankments running more than ten kilometers, and almost nobody outside Uganda has heard of it.

That alone would be reason enough to write about it. But the deeper I read, the more this site kept doing something I didn’t expect from a piece of research. It kept correcting me.

What the Word Fort Actually Hides

Locally, the site is called Bigo bya Mugyenyi, the fort of the stranger. For most of the last century, that name got taken at face value by everyone studying it from the outside. A British colonial officer named D.L. Baines documented the earthworks in 1909 and called them defensive. Major C.R. Hall mapped them the same way in the years after. The Uganda Protectorate’s geological survey repeated the assumption again in 1921. When archaeologists finally got their hands dirty at the site, P.L. Shinnie in 1957 and then Merrick Posnansky in 1960, spending seven weeks excavating more than twenty trenches and recovering over four thousand pottery sherds, they were still working from the same starting point Baines had set half a century earlier. This was a fort. Forts get built by people preparing for war.

It took later archaeological review, working back through that same physical evidence with fresh eyes, to ask a better question. Not who was Bigo defending against. What was Bigo actually feeding.

The faunal remains pulled from Posnansky’s trenches are dominated by cattle bone. The material culture points toward a pastoral economy, not a garrison. And the outer ditch itself gives away the real story if you look at where it goes. A defensive wall wants a clean perimeter, a hard line between safety and danger. Bigo’s outer ditch does the opposite. It branches. It opens in multiple places. Long sections of it run straight into the Katonga River, as though the river was always meant to be part of the boundary rather than a threat sitting outside it.

That’s the signature of something built to manage where a herd could move and where it could cross water, not something built to keep an army out. Cattle, in the world that raised these earthworks, weren’t decoration on a kingdom’s wealth. They were the wealth itself, the means by which a family married its children, settled its debts, and got through a bad season. An elaborate system engineered around where animals could safely drink and graze isn’t a war story. It’s a mothering story, built at the scale of an entire kingdom.

Sixty Years Is a Long Time to Carry the Wrong Word

It’s worth sitting with how long the fortress reading actually held, because the people repeating it weren’t careless. Shinnie was a trained archaeologist. Posnansky spent weeks in the dirt doing exactly the kind of patient, careful documentation good fieldwork requires. Neither man invented the fortress story out of nowhere. They inherited it, the way most people inherit the frame they were handed before they ever picked up a trowel.

Part of where that frame came from is easy to trace. Oral tradition collected during the colonial period, filtered already through colonial assumptions, claimed the Bachwezi and the dynasty that followed them had invaded the region from the north. Officers who’d just lived through the Bunyoro-Buganda conflicts of the 1800s, who’d built their own forts elsewhere in western Uganda, who in some cases had served in the trenches of the First World War, looked at a massive ditch system and an invasion story and didn’t need much convincing. The two fit the only template they already carried for what large earthworks in Africa were supposed to mean.

So the empire that misread Bigo wasn’t reading the ground in front of it. It was reading its own recent history and projecting that history backward four hundred years, onto people who’d never given anyone a reason to think they’d built this place for war.

A People Remembered More for Mercy Than Might

The Bachwezi sit in an unusual space between archaeology and legend, and the honest version of this story holds both at once rather than resolving the tension too neatly.

The historian D.W. Cohen wrote about the Cwezi cult in 1968, and J.P. Chrétien followed in 1985 with a study whose title says the quiet part directly, the construction of a geopolitical imaginary. Both scholars treat the idea of one unified Bachwezi empire with real caution. The documented royal line runs to only two or three names. The reign is remembered as brief. Parts of the oral record carry visible fingerprints of later colonial-era reshaping, the same invasion narrative that helped manufacture the “fortress” understanding in the first place.

But here’s where the story turns somewhere Cahokia and most sites in this series can’t reach. The political history may be uncertain. The spiritual one never stopped.

Chwezi spirit-possession survived the dynasty, (if the dynasty existed in quite the shape oral tradition describes at all). It became, and remains, a living practice, documented under different names across the Nyoro musegu, the Rundi ikishegu, the Ha and Ankole imandwa, the Luba mbudye, and the Sukuma and Nyamwezi swezi traditions of Tanzania. Researchers working in Tanzania have found active Chwezi initiation happening quietly today, the initiated keeping their identity to themselves rather than displaying it.

And near Bigo itself, local guides tell a smaller, gentler version of why this particular site is the one people still remember out of several similar forts in the region. Two nearby sites, Ndawula and Nakayima, were once just as significant. Bigo kept its visitors because, as one local guide put it, the site was nearer and had mercy on people. Not because it was stronger. Because it was kinder. That’s not a detail you find in a colonial survey. It’s the kind of thing that only gets passed down by people who’ve kept coming back.

Ahead of the List, Not Behind It

Bigo bya Mugenyi was added to Uganda’s tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status on September 10, 1997. Tentative isn’t inscribed. The site is recognized as a serious candidate, formally on record, still waiting on the fuller nomination and review process that would bring full World Heritage status.

That waiting doesn’t need an apology attached to it. Bigo was already the largest known ancient monument in Uganda long before any UNESCO list existed, long before the British empire that first misread it had even finished doing so. A tentative listing just means international recognition is catching up to something the earthworks, the cattle bone, the pottery, and six centuries of continuous Chwezi practice never needed anyone’s permission to already be true.

Working With Bigo This Cancer Season

Cancer season runs from June 21 through July 22, and the Moon, which rules the sign, knows the difference between a structure built to keep an enemy out and a structure built to hold what actually feeds a household.

Bigo asks that exact question of anyone willing to sit with it. What gets mistaken for defensive that was really built for care? Picture the herders moving cattle through those branching openings toward water, the same ditches that got called a war wall for sixty years, actually shaped around feeding and protecting and provisioning a people, season after season, the unglamorous daily work no colonial survey thought to ask about.

The New Moon in Cancer on July 14 is a fitting moment to look for that same misreading somewhere closer to home. Something in your own life that looks guarded from the outside might be structured around care the whole way through. Worth asking before assuming you already know which one you’re looking at.

I don’t experience this weekend as a list of separate events. I experience it as one piece of ground with several things sprouting at the same time.

The solstice arrives and yawns into Cancer Season. Chiron rolls over into Taurus. And out of that soil, two acts of liberation bloom on the same patch of earth: Juneteenth and Father’s Day. One ecosystem, several fruits.

Let me walk through it the way I’m actually holding it.

Juneteenth

I spent yesterday thinking about roots and rivers. Philly. Trenton. North and South Cackalacky. The Schuylkill and the Delaware. The Chowan and the Meherrin. The Edisto and the Santee. I thought about the Black American power plants too: cotton, tobacco, Spanish moss, chamomile, okra, rice, and so many more crops that built fortunes on the backs of people who were never meant to taste freedom, let alone outlive the system that tried to own them.

Maferefun Elegua. Maferefun Egungun.

There’s a saying passed down from earlier generations of Black Texans who were there for the first Juneteenth: “It was not a piece of paper that freed the slaves, but the men with the guns.” That phrase has weight because it’s true. The men with the guns included Black soldiers of the United States Colored Troops, standing in Galveston with the authority to enforce what a piece of paper alone never could. Freedom wasn’t a gift extended. It was a fact enforced by armed Black men who showed up and made the paper mean something.

I give thanks today to my parents, my grandparents, my great-grandparents, and every parent before them who chose to survive a condition they never selected. Survival was the first liberation technology, and everything I do is downstream of it.

The Soil This Survival Grows In

Yesterday, June 19th, the same day Juneteenth marks the last enforcement of freedom in Texas, Chiron moved into Taurus. Let’s just breathe in that synchronicity for a second because it’s the kind of thing that makes me loveee this work. A new collective healing cycle opened on the exact day we mark the closing of one of the most violent collective wounds this country has ever produced.

Chiron in Taurus whispers with specificity. Chiron is the wounded healer, the asteroid that shows us where we got hurt early and where we’re still capable of becoming medicine for others because of it. Taurus governs worth, stability, value, and our relationship to physical reality, to the body, to the earth, to what we own and what owns us. Over the coming years, until around 2034, we’ll be collectively working through wounds that formed around these exact themes. Experiences that made us question our worth, our stability, our right to take up physical space, all of that is coming forward to be looked at directly.

This is a slow transit. It won’t resolve in a season. But it opened by turning our attention toward our collective wounds around fathering and liberation, and I love that sort of celestial intention. Some healing needs decades to even become legible.

Today the solstice arrives. The sun reaches its peak, the longest day, the most light we’ll get all year. Solar light has always read as a masculine register in most cosmological systems I work with, the active, expressive, outward-reaching force. And right as that solar peak hits, Cancer season next to it, moon-ruled, water-natured, asking that same solar force to soften. The peak of expansion immediately meets an invitation toward feeling. That tension, light expanding and water softening at the exact same moment, is the actual shape of this weekend.

Father’s Day

This is the soil Father’s Day grows out of this year. Cancer season opening with a request for softness, right as we’re asked to honor fathers.

I’m close with my dad. His nurturing presence throughout my life is the reason I’m still connected to my own emotions instead of having armored over them the way so many of us learn to. His version of masculinity kept me soft. It kept me honest. It built a sense of safety and security in me from the inside out, the kind that doesn’t have to posture okayness because it was never built on performing it in the first place.

My dad is a Cancer rising. He’s always said, “Always speak what’s on your heart, if not it could cause cancer and ulcers.” I’ve lived by that more than almost anything else anyone has ever told me. He also taught me, “Without accountability, there can be no resolution.” Half of what I understand about repair, about staying in relationships through difficulty, about being a person who can actually hear and be heard, traces back to that one sentence.

It’s the sound and intact fathers who open this season. The ones whose example of masculinity actually softens rather than hardens. The ones whose understanding breeds encouragement instead of fear. The ones whose guidance builds people who are sound of mind and soft of heart at the same time, instead of asking them to choose.

So happy Father’s Day to all the mothering fathers. The ones who do Cancer season’s work without anyone ever telling them that’s what they were doing.

The Weekend, Mapped

Working With This Energy

A few ways to actually move with what’s open this weekend, rather than just reading about it.

Speak the thing on your heart before the day ends. My dad’s words apply literally here. Whatever you’ve been holding back from someone you love, Cancer season’s opening is asking you to let it out before it becomes something your body has to carry instead.

Locate one wound around worth or stability and just name it. You don’t have to resolve it. Chiron in Taurus is a years-long process, not a weekend assignment. Naming it is the whole task right now.

Give thanks to a river, a crop, or a piece of land that held your ancestors. Juneteenth asks for remembrance that’s specific, not abstract. Name an actual place.

Call or write the fathering presence in your life, whoever that is for you. Blood relation isn’t required. Cancer season’s opening this year is specifically about the fathers and father figures who did the soft work.

This is a lot of ground to hold in one weekend. I’m holding all of it at once too, the grief and the gratitude and the light and the water. That’s the practice.

I love when Spring air becomes Summer winds. Something confirms itself. The blossoms that were asking permission start simply being. The asking is over.

I’ve been sitting with that quality in my relational life too. This season has been asking me to confirm some things. And to finally let go of some agreements I never actually chose.

What I mean by agreements isn’t only the conscious ones. Not just what we’ve said out loud or decided deliberately. I mean the software running underneath: the patterns that govern how we respond to disappointment, who we become when we’re hurt, what we do with difficulty before we’ve had time to think. Those patterns are agreements too. We just didn’t sign them with full knowledge of what we were signing.

Most of them were inherited.

My maternal grandmother’s heavenly birthday was June 9th. I never had a relationship with her. Religious differences between her and my mother kept that door closed for most of my life, and by the time those kinds of doors can sometimes reopen, it was too late. What I’ve been sitting with this week is not grief exactly, though there’s some of that. It’s more like an accounting. An honest look at what moves through a lineage when the thread of initiation gets cut.

When a woman is never initiated into motherhood by her own mother, that gap doesn’t disappear. It passes forward.

My mother had me at 20. Her mother had her at 20. And what got transmitted across those two generations wasn’t just a way of mothering, it was the shape of the gap itself. What happens to a woman who mothers without having been mothered through her own hardest passages? She does the best she can with the maps she has. And sometimes the maps run out earlier than either of you expected.

I’ve been learning to hold that with more tenderness than I used to. It’s a real understanding of what was actually happening. My mother was navigating unmapped territory. So was hers. So, in many ways, am I.

Of course I’m carrying some of their software in my nervous system. Responses that made complete sense in the terrain they were built for.

I’ve been working with the agreement that difficulty means doing it alone. Whatever it is. That when something goes wrong between you and someone you love, the safest response is to armor up, get quiet, and figure it out without asking for anything. I know exactly where that software came from. My mother navigated a lot on her own, reluctantly. My father’s early life included a significant amount of rejection and an emotionally distant relationship with his own mother, a relationship he is actively mending now as her primary caregiver. These are people who built incredible things from the coping mechanisms they had available. And those same mechanisms are not the right tools for the territory I’m actually in.

The inherited software doesn’t know that. It just runs.

What I’m learning this season, slowly and with real effort, is to let difficulty soften me instead of harden me. To stay with the discomfort long enough to use my actual words instead of going silent and doing something unnecessarily alone to prove I don’t need anything. To practice forgiveness that is actually forgiveness and not just management. To stay committed to my own development without making the people I love responsible for it, and without punishing them when it’s hard.

These are not small things. They require me to override patterns that are, genuinely, years deep.

But they’re possible. And they’re possible in part because of the safest relationship I have.

My relationship with my father has been one of the most rewarding and grounding places in my life. We have learned to grow together, to deepen, to mirror each other, to ping-pong the familial legacy back and forth in ways that feel like genuine repair happening in real time. As Father’s Day approaches, I keep returning to something simple: I am because he is. And I carry that not as pressure but as a kind of quiet fuel. And in astrocartography, Mercury is the planet that tells you where your thinking runs at its sharpest, where your mental body is in deep communication with yourself and the land you’re on.

Not where you’re comfortable. Not where you’re validated. Where your thinking activates at a frequency you don’t access everywhere.

By the end of it, several of them had confirmed something they’d been sensing for years without language, a specific city kept doing something to their work that no other place did.

What a Mercury Line Actually Is

Mercury governs communication, intellectual transmission, and the exchange of ideas. In astrocartography, your natal Mercury gets projected across the globe. Every location where Mercury fell on a significant angle at your birth creates a particular relationship between you and what that place is generating intellectually.

Places carry frequencies of thought. Some are compatible with yours. Some challenge it. Some accelerate it past the point you can comfortably keep pace with.

Mercury lines are places where participation in the atmosphere of thought, local community, and curiosity takes center stage.

That can look like being flooded with ideas you don’t have containers for yet. Or it can look like your intellectual faculties finally running at the frequency you’ve been searching for. The difference between those two experiences usually comes down to one thing: whether or not you showed up with a system for the inspiration to move through.

Grounding, routine, structure, what makes it usable. Without them, these places overwhelm. With them, they produce the kind of sustained intellectual output that a large body of work requires.

Mercury lines also ask you to listen differently. Not just to other people, but to the sound of the place itself. The texture of how ideas circulate there. Your own habits, which are driven by subtler software than you usually pay attention to, become visible in Mercurial territory in ways they don’t elsewhere.

The Four Angles

A Mercury line isn’t one line. It’s four, each corresponding to a different angle of your natal chart and a different register of activation.

On the Ascendant, your voice carries different weight. Your presence arrives before you finish speaking. This is where your communication style becomes more fully itself, sometimes more charged than you expected.

On the Descendant, your intellectual partnerships activate. The collaborators who challenge and sharpen your thinking tend to find you here. Exchange between minds becomes genuinely generative rather than polite.

On the Midheaven, your ideas become public work. Writing, teaching, and speaking land with more resonance and reach. Intellectual reputation builds here, sometimes faster than it does anywhere else.

On the IC, the activation goes inward. This is where you think most deeply, where ideas connected to your lineage and roots finally find language. Often the most foundational and least visible of the four. If your work requires going all the way down before it can come up and out, this is the line for that.

A Note on How I Read These Lines

Most astrocartographic practices treat Mercury lines as personal opportunity zones. Go here, think better. Go here, write the book. And that’s not wrong, but it’s also not the whole story.

I’m a liberation cartographer. Which means when I look at a Mercury line, I’m asking more than where you articulate most clearly. I’m asking what the land already holds. Who has been speaking in that territory for generations and under what conditions. Whether the clarity you feel there is yours alone, or whether it’s borrowed from something older than your chart. What are your actual agreements with the land itself?

The Green Book didn’t just map safe places to eat. It mapped a communications infrastructure that Black travelers built across a country that was actively working to silence them. Every Mercury line that crosses the American South sits on top of that history whether your astrocartography software accounts for it or not.

So when I work with Mercurial lines in my practice, I’m holding the planetary influence in one hand and the psychogeography of place in the other. Your voice may carry differently in certain cities. But whose voices did that city amplify before yours arrived? What’s the quality of truth-telling that territory has historically protected or suppressed? Those questions don’t replace the astrology. They deepen it.

A Mercury line is a starting coordinate. The reading begins when you ask what the land is already saying.

Who These Lines Call

Across years of client work, a pattern keeps showing up. People drawn to their Mercury lines are almost always being called to generate thought forms that don’t yet exist. They’re not coming to these places to refine what they already know. They’re coming because the intellectual territory of that location is asking them to make a contribution.

These are optimal conditions for people who are deep in a large body of work. A book. A methodology. A research phase that requires long stretches of sustained, precise thinking.

Mercury territory also tends to feel more gender expansive than Mars or Venus lines. On Mercury lines, clients regularly recraft their personal style, posture, and mannerisms without quite planning to. What they build tends to be nimble and fluid with the moment. That tracks: Mercury is the messenger between worlds and doesn’t belong exclusively to any of them.

And one more thread worth naming. People who travel to their Mercury lines are frequently doing humanitarian work or mutual aid. There’s a shared agreement operating underneath, usually not fully articulated, about helping a place navigate an overwhelming strife. As if the land has a question looking for a specific kind of thinking, and their particular mind is compatible with the frequency.

What Happened in the Workshop

One by one I pulled up each person’s chart and zoomed into their Mercury line’s relationship to Stockholm. The readings got precise fast. The island held the container. Water surrounding us, the history of navigation in the building’s bones, eight people who’d already spent a week in deep intellectual community.

Someone with Mercury on the IC had been the quietest person in the room all week, contributing in ways no one had fully named. I read it as this being the place where her deepest thinking stays underground and does its work without performing for anyone. She went very still. Then something behind her eyes shifted.

Someone with Mercury on the Midheaven kept describing how Stockholm was the only place people seemed to understand what she was actually doing, not just what she was describing. I read it as the place where her intellectual reputation was building in a public register that wasn’t yet available to her at home. She pulled up an email on her phone. A collaboration offer from that week she hadn’t told anyone about yet.

These charts aren’t describing potential. They’re describing what’s already happening, in the places it’s already happening. The work is learning to read it.

Traveling Without Projecting

Most people arrive somewhere carrying a fantasy of what the place might give them. But the fantasy of a place and the actual intelligence of that place are not always compatible. Mercury lines make that gap visible faster than most.

When you arrive demanding that a location confirm what you already believe about it, you close off the range of what it can show you. Soften into its actual stories, its local textures, its realities as they are, and something else becomes possible. You end up changed by witnessing rather than by projection. That change transforms you. It shows up in your work months later without an origin story attached to it.

Mercurial territory accelerates this because of how strongly it pulls on the mind. If you arrive with a rigid framework, it’ll find the pressure points. That friction is usually clarification. It’s rarely a sign to leave.

If a Place Keeps Calling You

You’ve been somewhere multiple times without being able to fully explain why. Or there’s a city you’ve never visited that keeps surfacing in your work, your research, your conversations. Or a place that changed how you think and the change didn’t revert when you left.

Pull your astrocartography chart. Look for Mercury. See where it runs.

Stockholm had my name on it. I knew that before I booked the flight. What I didn’t know was how far inside the city would take me once I actually arrived.

I went for the Reconstructions program at Kungl. Konsthögskolan, the Royal Institute of Art, where I gave a keynote and led a Mercury Lines astrocartography workshop. I wrote about the more personal, interior experience of that week in Reconstructed: What the Room Knew Before I Did. This piece is something else. This one is about what Stockholm is doing when it’s doing its thing. The people, the spaces, the work, the art. The black realities of a city with a whole interior life that most visitors never touch.

Reconstructions is my kind of classroom. It’s a room with couches and soft blankets and a full professional DJ setup and a particular kind of softness that you don’t usually associate with graduate-level art education. That’s entirely intentional, and it’s entirely Marie-Louise Richards. She’s the one who built this. Three years running now, and every detail of how the room is held reflects something about her. Gorgeous, genuinely curious, radiating warmth without shrinking. She’s one of those people who can be deeply interested in what you’re doing while being completely sure of herself in those same moments. Watching her move through the week she’d assembled was like watching someone who’s been thinking about this for a long time finally get to show you what that thinking looks like in real life.

And what she assembled for that week? I’m still processing it.

Lynnée Denise opened her session on Tuesday with a question that did something to the room immediately: “What are you listening to closely?”

That’s it. That was the whole entry point. And people just opened up. Not to music, mostly, though some did land there. Someone talked about the sound of birds returning to Stockholm after the dark of a Swedish winter, and something about that image, these birds coming back like a signal that the earth is waking up again, made everyone exhale a little and the chambers of their own heart. Another person described a particular instrument they couldn’t name but could feel. The agreements certain sounds were activating in them. The room got slow and attentive in that particular way that only happens when people feel genuinely safe to say the strange true thing.

And then Lynnée played an audio clip of Christina Sharpe speaking at a commencement ceremony, and the room tuned itself to an entirely different frequency.

Sharpe is the Canada Research Chair in Black Studies in the Humanities at York University and the author of In the Wake and Ordinary Notes, and if you haven’t read either of those books, please understand that you’re walking around with a piece of yourself missing. The clip Lynnée played isn’t currently available on YouTube, so I can’t embed it here, but I want to pass along a few of the phrases that landed in my body and haven’t left since:

“Everyday people were, are, making other ways to live.”

“Each practice asks us to embody listening.”

“Sound is terror and witness and the improvisational.”

“Sound is sonic protection.”

That last one. I just need you to sit with that. Sound as a form of protection. Not just expression, not just beauty, but something that wraps around the body and says: we’re still here. We made it. We made it sound like this.

Lynnée closed her session with people mixing older recordings with newer versions of the same songs, listening for what shifted, what was added, what the time had done to the sound. It was such a precise and generous way to end. Because that’s exactly what this whole week was asking all of us: what’s been added? What does the time reveal?

After my talk on Tuesday, Rosel, a Reconstructions student who’s been living in Stockholm for years now, originally from the UK, asked if I wanted to visit the gallery she works at. We headed into Södermalm and it was like being handed a live wire.

She took me to Southnord, a gallery on Katarina Bangata doing something I hadn’t seen documented in any of the Stockholm content I’d consumed before I arrived. Their current exhibition, Earthscape, is a collections show built around a question Alexandra Mitiku puts plainly in the wall text: “...will you give yourself to the earth, or swallow it whole?” Eight artists. Eight practices in deep conversation with land, body, memory, colonial inheritance, and the material world.

Michelle Eistrup whose Mineral Emissaries photographs flaked stones from the Terra Mineralia Collection against colonial archive imagery in a way that turns extraction into indictment. Theresa Traore Dahlberg whose Blue Mountain #1 and #2 builds circuit boards out of discarded copper, holding the full weight of industrial history in abstract forms that feel almost devotional. Liisa-Irmelen Liwata whose ceramic Formation explores the geographic pole as a spiritual centering device, examining nation as both constraint and container. Alexandra Mitiku whose That’s Why They Don’t Pick the Bones uses clay, indigo, ink, and acrylic to hold the tension between being formed by scarcity and refusing to be defined by it. Marcia Harvey Isaksson whose site-specific diptych She Had Two, So She Gave Him One crochets copper thread and red earth from Harare into the contested geographies of Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro, two mountains that watched empires carve borders beneath them. Viola Nimuhamya whose monumental upcycled denim installation One at a Time stretches and coils like plant life or water, carrying embedded family craft traditions from matriarch to maker across continents.

And then there’s Sasha Huber.

Sasha Huber’s Mami Wata (2022) is the one that stopped me. It’s made entirely of metal staples pressed into painted oak wood, and the effect is staggering. You’re looking at something that reads as almost textile, almost skin, almost water, definitely alive. The Mami Wata tradition across African and Afro-Caribbean spiritual systems centers a water deity associated with healing, wealth, transformation, and the dangerous generosity of abundance. And Huber captures something genuinely essential about that presence. Not just the visual likeness but the feeling of it. The way those staples catch light and move suggests the deity is watching you back, that the attention is mutual. It’s the most straightforward spiritual encounter I’ve had with a piece of contemporary art in a long time.

Dyami Rain Andrews closes the exhibition with Tremors Above (2025), a series of painted landscapes that are recognizable and simultaneously wrong in the way that climate grief makes landscapes feel wrong, familiar shapes distorted by conditions nobody asked for.

Rosel walked me through each piece with such care that I kept thinking: this is what it means to be in relationship with art. Not consuming it. Being in actual conversation with it. Her excitement was contagious in the real sense of that word, like lightning moving between bodies. By the time we walked back out onto the street I felt like Stockholm had handed me something it doesn’t give everyone.

Then we walked to a rehearsal.

Alanna Stuart, who performs as Pyne, is a Carribbean-Canadian and currently studying in Stockholm, and she was working through material for her next project that evening in a small rehearsal space. She produced everything herself. And the spirit of each song, the choreography, the range she moved through, the warmth that just radiated from her presence into the room, it moved through the audience like weather. You didn’t decide to feel it. It just arrived.

I love the sacredness of watching an artist work in that pre-release state. Before the marketing. Before the interpretation. Just the thing itself, being made. I felt lucky to be in the room.

The next day I facilitated my Mercury Lines astrocartography workshop, which I’ll go much deeper into in the piece publishing Tuesday. But briefly: it was one of the most sacred creative experiences I’ve had as a practitioner. The island itself felt like a womb. One by one I read each person’s Mercury line in relation to Stockholm specifically, using their charts as divination tools, and what came through was precise and emotional and sometimes surprising to them in ways that were clearly real. More on all of that soon.

The week closed with Aspar of Spellkast leading a scent workshop where we each built a personal talisman using a methodology he’s developed that pairs tarot divination with scent. I wrote about that experience in Reconstructed: What the Room Knew Before I Did, so I won’t double the ground here. But the through line between Lynnée’s listening session and Aspar’s scent work is not a coincidence. These are both practices that ask the body to be the instrument of knowing. Different senses, same epistemology. Marie-Louise knew exactly what she was building.

And none of this happens without Musa Murchison.

Musa suggested me for the keynote and the workshop, and that fact deserves more than a footnote. Musa is a global speaker, author, genuine matchmaker of people and ideas. The kind of thinker you want to scale thought with because they’re not transactional about it. If it aligns, they’re invested. And the fact that they looked at what Marie-Louise was building and thought of me is something I carry with a lot of gratitude. Stockholm is not one thing. There’s the Stockholm on the tourism brochures and then there’s the Stockholm that Southnord is documenting, that Reconstructions is building, that Rosel navigates with such fluency, that Alanna is making music inside of right now. These realities exist simultaneously. The counter-cartographer’s job is to know where to look and to center what was only ever meant to be an afterthought.

This was my first time there, and I’m aware that what I had access to is an introduction, a particular cross-section shaped by who invited me and who I met and where they took me. But even this sliver made clear that Stockholm has a whole interior life that most people walk right past.

So if you go: stop by Southnord. Seek out the spaces that hold the lived experiences of that place rather than its official story. Listen for what textures your experience when you do. And remember that a place that called you by name will always show you more than the place you simply decided to visit.

Just present to a relationship I’ve been building for years, with fire, with the desert, with the elementals and the land intelligence that has been teaching me things I couldn’t have learned inside a building. I’ve been feeding fires like that one long enough to know what to do with my own company. Long enough to know what sorts of worlds I came here to conjure. Some of them are running on old software. And Gemini season, which rules communication and the transmission of information, is the most useful season of the year to look at which is which.

A Sagittarius full moon at the halfway point of 2026 is asking: what have you learned about yourself in the first half of this year, and have you let the people who matter know?

That’s not a small question. It’s the one this blue moon is specifically built for.

The good news is that clarity, even the exhausting kind, is a gift. Knowing what comes next, being able to see the next conversation and the next version of the dynamic, means the work is already done in the mind. The body just needs a beat to catch up.

It’s a reasonable question. Mars governs will, assertion, the capacity to initiate. In astrology, it’s the planet that asks whether you know what you want and whether you’re willing to move toward it. So when people see a Mars line running through a territory they’re considering, the instinct is to think of it as a power zone, a place where their ambition becomes activated and their drive sharpens into something useful.

But Martian energy doesn’t actually produce power the way that framing implies. What it produces is encounter. A Mars line is where your will meets the world’s resistance, and what you discover in that encounter says more about you than any comfortable territory ever will. It’s not that Mars lines make you powerful. It’s that they make your relationship to power legible in ways that other places let you avoid.

I’ve watched clients move through Mars line territories and misread the activation as confirmation. One client whose Mars line ran through Lagos arrived expecting to feel unstoppable and spent the first month in a sustained confrontation with every institutional system she tried to work within. Visa complications, bureaucratic delays, a workspace arrangement that fell through on the day she landed. She called it a disaster. But what she was actually doing was learning the difference between asserting her will and understanding the territory she was asserting it in. By month three she had built working relationships she couldn’t have manufactured through efficiency alone. The friction was the curriculum.

That’s Martian energy in practice. It’s directive and clarifying, but it requires something from you that most people aren’t prepared to give, which is the willingness to stay in the encounter past the point where it’s comfortable.

What Detriment Actually Means

Before going further, a clarification on a piece of astrological language that gets either overcomplicated or dismissed.

When astrologers say a planet is in its domicile, they mean it’s operating in the sign it rules, expressing its nature most fluently. Venus is in her domicile in Taurus and Libra. She moves easily there. The conditions match her temperament.

Detriment is the opposite condition. A planet in detriment is in the sign that sits directly across the zodiac from its home sign, meaning the conditions work against its grain. Mars is in detriment in Taurus and Libra because those are Venus’s signs, and the Martian impulse to assert, cut through, and push forward keeps running into Taurean insistence on slowness, deliberation, and asking whether the thing is actually worth the energy it costs.

This is why Taurus season is such a specific time to read Mars and Venus lines together. We’re in Venus’s domicile, which means Venusian discernment is more available right now than at almost any other point in the year. The capacity to evaluate what’s genuinely aligned, to know what you actually value before you move toward it, is heightened. And the Martian drive to just go is being held in check by a season that keeps asking: but is this what you want? Or is this just what you’ve decided to want because you don’t know how to sit still?

That tension is the whole article.

The Two Ranges

Most people treat Venus and Mars as opposites in astrocartography. Soft and hard. Receptive and active. The planet of love and the planet of war. But that binary is more poetic than accurate, and following it tends to produce readings that flatten both energies into something unrecognizable from actual lived experience.

Venus and Mars are two expressions of the same root: desire. Venus is the magnetic range, the pull. It’s what draws things toward you and what you find yourself drawn toward. It governs attraction, beauty, worth, and the question of what you’re actually willing to accept in exchange for connection. When you’re on a Venus line, you tend to become more visible, more magnetic, more likely to encounter the conditions your patterns with love and value have been asking you to confront. Venusian discernment is the capacity that gets activated in that territory, the ability to evaluate what’s genuinely aligned rather than just what feels flattering in the moment.

Mars is the kinetic range. It’s what you move toward and what you’re willing to move through to get there. Where Venus asks what you value, Mars asks what you’ll do about it. Where Venus receives, Mars initiates. But both of them are oriented toward the same question: what do you actually want, and why?

The reason I read them together in sessions is that most people’s confusion about desire lives precisely in the gap between those two planets. They know what they’re drawn to (Venus) but haven’t yet mapped what they’re willing to do about it (Mars). Or they know exactly what they’re chasing (Mars) but haven’t honestly evaluated whether they actually want it or just want to have wanted it (Venus). The territories that activate one tend to put the other under pressure, and that pressure is where the real information is.

A client who works as a composer had a Venus line running through Berlin and a Mars line cutting through West Africa, with a specific pass near the coast of Senegal. She’d been considering both as potential relocation options for a year-long sabbatical. What we found when we read the lines together was that Berlin was where her relationship to collaboration, credit, and what she deserved from her work kept surfacing. Every short stay there had produced a situation requiring her to advocate for herself in professional contexts. Senegal was where her creative urgency landed, where she felt activated and directional and willing to start things.

What she actually needed was the sequence, not the either-or. Berlin first, because the Venusian territory was asking her to do the value work before the creative sprint. She’d been trying to shortcut to Mars, to produce and move, without having done the reckoning with worth that her Venus territory was holding open for her. The Martian impulse wanted to bypass the harder question.
