A few weeks ago, a friend and I were both scrolling through our feeds around the same time, watching updates about the protest at Jantar Mantar. We quickly realised we were looking at two almost entirely different events. My feed was full of clips about the hunger strike, the health concerns and the silence from the government. Hers was full of clips questioning the protesters’ motives and calling the whole thing overblown. We were reading about the same protest, on the same day and yet we had walked away with two completely different pictures of what was actually happening.

That moment stuck with me, because it’s such a clear example of something we all technically know but rarely stop to think about, the algorithm doesn’t show us the world, it shows us a version of the world built from what we’ve clicked on before. For entertainment, this works fine. If you watch more cooking videos, you get more cooking videos. The logic is simple and fair. But when the same rule quietly applies to news, politics, crime, religion and social issues too, that’s where things start to feel a lot more serious.

When an algorithm decides what version of a protest, a crime story or a political event you see, based purely on what kept you watching before, it isn’t checking facts, it’s just chasing attention. Over time, this doesn’t just shape what we see, it shapes what we believe is true and two people can end up with entirely opposite understandings of the same reality without either of them realising anything went wrong.

It’s easy to see why platforms build things this way. Content that confirms what we already believe keeps us scrolling longer and longer scrolling is simply better for business. The algorithm isn’t trying to inform us fairly, it’s trying to keep us engaged and those two goals don’t always line up, especially when the topic actually matters.

The long-term cost of this is quiet but real. When people keep seeing different versions of the same event for long enough, facts start to feel optional. Disagreements stop being about opinions and start being about which version someone happened to see.

None of this means we stop using social media, that’s not realistic anymore. But it might mean staying a little more curious about what we’re not being shown and making the occasional effort to look outside our own feed before deciding we know the full story. This is also where going back to newspapers and news channels that actually fact-check their information matters. Sources that aren’t just feeding us the narrative we’re most likely to engage with. The more we stop treating social media as our main source of news, the more power we take back from the algorithm and the more control we have over fixing this problem ourselves.

What the New UPI Amendment Bill Means for You

On 6 August 2026, the Lok Sabha passed the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The bill was passed without any debate. The House had been disrupted through the day over unrelated Opposition protests and when it reconvened at 2 pm, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman moved the bill for consideration. It passed on a voice vote before the House adjourned.

The reasoning has been building for years. Since January 2020, the government has enforced a zero-Merchant Discount Rate policy on UPI. That means banks and payment providers couldn’t charge for processing these payments. Industry bodies have pushed back, arguing this isn’t sustainable, especially as government subsidies meant to offset the ecosystem’s costs have shrunk, from around ₹2,000 crore in FY24 to roughly ₹437 crore in FY25, even as transaction volumes keep climbing.

The bill amends the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, removing the legal bar on charging users or merchants for UPI and other notified digital payment modes. It doesn’t impose any charge immediately, it simply gives the government the power to notify, whenever it chooses, which payment modes may be charged and how. No amount or structure has been announced yet and Sitharaman has said future charges would apply to merchants, not users directly.

For the government, this is really about flexibility, it can respond to the industry’s sustainability concerns without needing fresh legislation each time. It also shifts financial pressure away from its own subsidy budget.

For customers, there’s a case on both sides. A more sustainable UPI ecosystem could mean better infrastructure and fraud protection and since charges target merchants, users may not feel an immediate hit. But a legal guarantee millions relied on for six years is now conditional, decided by notification rather than public debate and merchants may well pass costs onto customers through pricing anyway.

What makes this harder to sit with is timing. UPI is now how most of India pays for everything. Its zero-cost nature is a big reason lower-income users adopted it in the first place, often moving away from cash for good. Reopening that door now, even cautiously, risks pushing the same people back toward costlier alternatives and that cost is unlikely to land evenly.

Reading it today, in a culture that constantly measures us against other people’s highlight reels and better-looking choices, the book feels like a quiet correction, a reminder that comparing our behind-the-scenes to someone else’s best moments rarely tells us anything true.

For professionals, the takeaway is worth sitting with: the job not taken, the risk not chosen, the path someone else seems to be living happily, none of it guarantees a better outcome and constantly relitigating old decisions often costs more than it gives back.

Some books offer escape. This one gently pulls you back into your own life and makes a strong case for staying in it. As it magically states “sometimes the only way to learn is to live”.

The Mathematics of a Good Life

A good life isn’t only built from a handful of big decisions- the job, the city, the person you marry. It’s also built from small, repeated choices we barely notice ourselves making and it’s those tiny, boring decisions, compounded over years, that end up deciding almost everything else.

Habits don’t live in isolation, they live inside an environment, one built from what we have access to and who we surround ourselves with, just as much as from willpower alone. Wanting to eat healthier isn’t solved simply by buying healthier food, it also depends on whether the food delivery apps are still sitting on your phone tempting you at night, whether your fridge is stocked with things that make the choose eating healthy and whether you’ve quietly stopped defaulting to eating out because it’s convenient rather than because you actually want to. The food is only one part of the equation, access and friction do just as much work.

The same logic runs through most habits. The people around us shape what feels normal, if everyone around you reads, reading feels effortless, and if everyone stays up late scrolling, that feels normal too, not because anyone’s forcing it, but because we absorb the behaviour of the rooms we spend the most time in. None of these choices feel significant on any given day, deleting an app, skipping one dinner out, choosing one friend group’s rhythm over another’s. But compounded over time, they add up to something that looks, from a distance, like an entirely different life.

This is really the mathematics of it, small decisions multiplying quietly in the background while we wait for the one big moment that will supposedly change everything. That moment rarely comes, or when it does, it’s usually just the visible tip of a hundred invisible choices made long before it.

Which is probably the more useful way to think about change, not as one dramatic decision but as an environment you deliberately build, the apps you keep or delete, the people you spend time around, the defaults you set so the easier choice quietly becomes the better one. A good life isn’t willed into existence in a single moment. It’s compounded, one small, wise choice at a time.

The Great Tech Reshuffle

Tech layoffs have crossed 170,500 jobs so far in 2026, across roughly 480 separate layoff events, averaging over 800 job losses a day. That already puts this year ahead of 2025’s full-year total of around 246,000 and the shift isn’t just about volume. It’s about what these cuts are funding. A little under half of this year’s layoff announcements now cite AI directly as a factor, up sharply from just 7% in January to 40% by May, while the same companies making these cuts are pouring hundreds of billions into AI infrastructure and chips. Oracle alone accounted for the single largest reduction of the year, around 30,000 roles.

The pain, though, isn’t spread evenly. Early-career workers are absorbing the sharpest blow, employment for software developers aged 22 to 25 has fallen close to 20% from its late-2022 peak and entry-level hiring at major tech firms is down over 50% over the same period. Junior job titles overall are down 34% compared to five years ago, against a 19% decline for senior titles. Meanwhile, workers over 30 in AI-heavy roles have actually seen employment grow and engineers with strong AI fluency now command pay premiums as high as 43% over their peers. Mid-level managers, particularly in coordination heavy roles like program and project management, have also emerged as unexpectedly vulnerable in this cycle.

People are finding new jobs, just not always the kind they had before. Many are moving to mid-sized companies or ones backed by private equity. Some are taking up contract or freelance work instead of full-time roles. Others are joining smaller AI-focused startups. Senior engineers with skills in cloud or cybersecurity are getting hired fastest. Mid-level engineers are having a harder time and are taking longer to land their next role.

It makes sense that a field once seen as one of the safest to work in now feels uncertain, and that feeling is valid. But the good news is, tech jobs aren’t disappearing, they’re just changing shape. The people getting back on their feet quickest aren’t always the ones with the most years of experience. They’re the ones who’ve kept learning, especially around AI tools and the newer skills companies are now looking for.

Co-Intelligence by Ethan Mollick

In Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with AI, Wharton professor Ethan Mollick makes a simple point: instead of fearing AI or ignoring it, we should learn to work with it, almost like working with a smart new colleague who doesn’t think the way we do. He calls this AI’s “jagged frontier”. It can write a beautiful poem in seconds, but struggle with something as simple as counting to twenty-five words. Once you understand that unevenness, you can start using AI well, without blindly trusting it or dismissing it completely.

To help with this, Mollick shares four simple rules. Always bring AI into your work so you learn where it helps and where it doesn’t. Stay the human in charge and always check its output. Treat it like a capable helper, not just a search engine. And remember, whatever AI you’re using today is the weakest version you’ll ever use, it only gets better from here.

Why Educating the Youth Is Everyone’s Business

Education has always been the quiet infrastructure behind every functioning society. It shapes how people think, how they vote, how they raise their children and how they show up for the people around them. Yet we rarely stop to examine why this matters so much for one particular segment: the youth.

Young people make up one of the largest and most active parts of any population and what happens to their education doesn’t stay contained to their own lives. It ripples outward in ways we don’t always pause to notice. An educated young generation tends to make more informed choices, whether that’s who they vote for, what they believe or how they engage with the world around them and that competence, multiplied across millions of young people, is really what ends up shaping the direction a country takes.

The direct impact is the one we talk about most often- better jobs, better incomes, more informed civic participation, a workforce capable of driving innovation and growth. But there’s a quieter, less discussed impact that matters just as much. The way an educated generation reaches both backward and forward in time. Educated children often become the ones explaining rights, schemes and systems to their parents and grandparents, translating a confusing bureaucracy into something their families can actually use. And in the other direction, an educated generation raises the next one differently, answering harder questions and modelling curiosity in a way that becomes the starting point for the generation after them.

When this goes wrong, the cost shows up quickly. A generation left without proper education isn’t just at an economic disadvantage, it’s also far more vulnerable to being pulled toward the wrong influences, whether that’s misinformation, radical ideologies, petty crime or people who prey on idle time and unanswered questions. An idle, uninformed youth is easy to mislead, simply because no one ever gave them the tools to think for themselves or ask the right questions.

This is exactly why the responsibility can’t fall on individual families alone. The system owes its youth a genuinely functioning educational infrastructure, real schools, supported teachers and access that doesn’t depend on where a child is born. Educate this generation well and you’re not just helping them, you’re protecting the ones before and after them too.

India’s Environment Ranking Isn’t Surprising, It’s a Long Time Coming

India recently ranked 176th out of 177 countries in the 2026 Environmental Performance Index, ahead of only Laos. Most of us didn’t need a report to tell us this, anyone who has stepped outside in Delhi in November or watched a local lake slowly turn into a dumping ground already knew where this was heading. The ranking simply puts a number on a decline we’ve been watching happen through choices we made, individually and as a country, without ever treating them as environmental choices at all.

Much of this comes down to political decisions that chose short-term convenience over long-term cost. India’s continued heavy reliance on coal for power, even as renewable pledges get announced with fanfare, is one clear example, the transition keeps getting promised but rarely prioritized at the pace the crisis demands. Environmental clearances for infrastructure and mining projects are often fast-tracked or diluted in the name of development and enforcement of existing pollution norms tends to exist more on paper than on the ground.

But it isn’t just the government’s decisions, our social choices carry weight too. Most Indian cities have grown around the private vehicle rather than reliable public transport, waste segregation is still the exception rather than the norm in most homes and festivals that once revolved around community now come wrapped in plastic and firecrackers with little thought for what happens after. None of these are dramatic on their own, but repeated across a billion-plus people, they add up to exactly the damage this ranking now reflects.

Left unaddressed, the cost won’t stay abstract for long, air quality will keep shortening life expectancy in our biggest cities, water stress will keep intensifying and the ecosystems we’re clearing today won’t be around for the next generation to rely on.

What the government needs now is less announcement and more enforcement. Real-time air quality monitoring with genuine industrial accountability, a coal-to-renewable transition that moves at the pace it’s spoken about, protected areas that are actually protected and real investment in public transport and waste infrastructure in cities that have long outgrown their current systems. The data already tells us where this road leads. What’s missing isn’t awareness, it’s the will to act before the damage stops being reversible.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Set in Nazi Germany, The Book Thief follows Liesel Meminger, a young girl who is sent to live with a foster family in a small German town just as the war and its horrors begin closing in around ordinary lives. Liesel can’t read when the story begins, but she steals her first book at her brother’s graveside, and from there, words become her way of making sense of a world that keeps taking things from her, her family, her safety, and eventually, people she comes to love. The story is narrated by Death itself, which somehow makes the quiet, human moments in the book, a shared basement during an air raid, a hidden Jewish man taught to box with words instead of fists, feel even more tender than they already are.

At its heart, the book is about how stories and language can either be weaponised to control people or used to help them survive with their humanity intact. Liesel’s foster father teaches her to read using painted words on their basement wall, while elsewhere in the same country, words are being used in propaganda to justify unspeakable cruelty, and that contrast runs quietly through the whole novel.

Reading it today, in a country where political rhetoric and misinformation shape public opinion faster than facts often can, the book is a reminder of how much power language actually holds, and how easily it can be used either to divide people or to hold them together in the middle of chaos.

The Return of Community

Human beings have never really been built to do life alone and for most of our history we didn’t. We lived in villages, in joint families, among neighbours who knew our names and probably our troubles too, because community back then wasn’t something you signed up for, it was simply the structure life came wrapped in.

Somewhere over the last few decades, that structure started to loosen. Families became smaller, cities pulled people away from the towns they grew up in and apartment buildings quietly replaced the courtyards and verandahs where people used to just sit around and talk without needing a reason to. Life became more private, more independent and for a lot of us, if we’re being honest, a little more lonely than we’d like to admit.

And yet, that old instinct to belong never really went anywhere, which is probably why we’re now watching people rebuild community in all these unexpected little forms. Midnight running clubs, groups of retired professionals meeting to stay active and feel useful again, coffee connoisseurs gathering to taste and argue over roast profiles, parents organising play dates less for their kids and more because they themselves need some adult conversation, book clubs that somehow still meet every month even when half the group hasn’t finished the book. None of this is a new idea, really. It’s just an old need finding new outlets.

There’s something quietly comforting about this, because it tells us that no matter how independent we try to become, we still look for people to share the ordinary parts of our day with. These little clubs seem to be solving something that apps and algorithms have mostly failed to fix, the simple, stubborn need to feel like you belong somewhere.

But it’s worth being honest about this too, because most of these clubs are thriving in fairly urban, upper middle class pockets, where people have the time, the disposable income and the kind of access this lifestyle quietly demands. A decent part of the city to live in, a membership fee that doesn’t feel like a stretch, a WhatsApp group full of people whose schedules happen to align with yours. For someone juggling two jobs, joining a club is rarely the first thing on their mind, even though their need for connection is just as real and probably even more pressing.

This raises a question worth sitting with: if community really is a basic human need, should access to it be this unevenly distributed?

Some of the answer has to come from us as a society, not every gathering needs a subscription fee or a curated venue, a park bench or a shared terrace can hold people together just as well. And some of it has to come from better public infrastructure, well maintained parks, community halls and local libraries that still function the way they were meant to, becoming meeting grounds for those who will never afford a curated club membership but crave connection just as much as anyone else.

The return of community is a good thing. It tells us we haven’t lost the instinct despite years of nuclear living and screen-lit distance. But if this comeback is to mean something beyond a nice trend, it can’t stay limited to those who can pay their way into belonging. Community was never meant to be a privilege. It was meant to be something everyone gets, simply by being human.

When a Hunger Strike Becomes a Test of Indian Democracy

Over the last two months, Delhi’s Jantar Mantar has hosted the Cockroach Janta Party’s protest. It began in mid-May as a satirical youth-led campaign started by Abhijeet Dipke, and has since grown into a real, on-ground movement. Its central demand is the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, over the NEET-UG paper leak scandal that disrupted exams for millions of students. Somewhere along the way, Sonam Wangchuk joined the protest. He is the Ramon Magsaysay Award-winning engineer and education reformer known for decades of work on Ladakh’s schools and sustainable living and he began an indefinite hunger strike in solidarity with the movement. It is his fast, more than anything else, that has come to define this story now.

Wangchuk began refusing food on the 28th of June and his strike has now crossed its 17th day, even as the broader CJP sit-in at the site has run for closer to 25 days. The demands have stayed fairly consistent throughout- Pradhan’s resignation over the exam leaks and a ₹1 crore compensation package for the families of students who took their own lives in the aftermath of the paper leak crisis after years of preparation . Most of the cases also include heavy educational loans that their families are now left struggling to repay. Over these seventeen days his body has visibly paid the price, doctors report he has lost close to eight kilograms, his blood pressure has dropped and a petition has now been filed in the Delhi High Court asking that he be hospitalised and possibly force-fed to prevent his condition from turning fatal. Other protesters on parallel fasts have already been hospitalized.

What’s striking, though, is not just the strike itself but the silence surrounding it. The government, so far, has offered no formal dialogue, no acknowledgment that a citizen is willingly risking his life at the edge of Parliament to be heard. Mainstream television channels have largely stayed away from the story too, with coverage instead carried almost entirely by independent journalists, YouTubers, and the protesters’ own social media accounts, which is an odd, almost telling contrast for a movement this large. And it isn’t only the state or the media that seems unmoved, a fair number of ordinary citizens also appear to be scrolling past this story rather than sitting with it, perhaps worn down by how frequently protests now come and go without consequence.

That combination, a peaceful citizen fasting near the seat of government, families who have already lost children asking for basic acknowledgement and support and a state that hasn’t felt the need to respond to either, says something uncomfortable about where Indian democracy currently stands. A functioning democracy is supposed to at least hear its citizens out when they protest peacefully, whether or not it agrees with them and the absence of that basic response is worth sitting with rather than explaining away.

Where this ends is genuinely uncertain. The government may eventually choose to engage, or Wangchuk may be persuaded, by doctors, courts, or the people around him, to end his fast before it costs him his health permanently. But if neither happens in time, India risks losing one of its more thoughtful public figures to what would ultimately be a battle of political ego rather than principle, and that is a cost no democracy should be willing to pay.

1984 by George Orwell

Orwell’s 1984 imagines a state where every action, thought and word is watched by an all-seeing power called Big Brother. The party controls not just what people do, but what they’re allowed to think, rewriting history, banning independent language, and punishing anyone who dares to reason for themselves. The story follows Winston Smith, a low-level worker who quietly begins to question the system, falls in love, and searches for a sliver of truth in a world built entirely on lies, only to be crushed by the very machinery he tried to resist.

The book isn’t really about the future. It’s about what happens when truth becomes negotiable and dissent becomes dangerous. Orwell shows how easily language can be twisted to mean its opposite, how surveillance can be dressed up as safety and how fear can quietly replace freedom without anyone announcing it.

Reading it today, in a country watching peaceful protests go unanswered, independent media struggle for space and public narratives shaped more by loud repetition than by fact, the parallels are hard to ignore. 1984 doesn’t ask us to panic. It asks us to stay alert, to notice when questions are treated as threats, and to protect the habit of thinking independently before it quietly disappears.

For professionals, the lesson sits closer to home than it seems. Workplaces too can develop their own versions of doublethink, where saying the convenient thing matters more than saying the true thing. Orwell’s warning is really an invitation to keep asking, keep questioning, and never let comfort replace conscience.

Some books entertain. This one unsettles you into paying attention, and that discomfort is exactly the point.

The Need to Be Seen in the Age of LinkedIn

Some habits become a part of our routine so quietly that we hardly notice when they stop being a choice. It could be those few minutes while waiting for the lift, sitting in the cab after work or lying in bed before falling asleep, when almost instinctively our fingers unlock the phone and begin scrolling not because we are looking for something in particular but because somewhere inside us there is a hope that the next notification might make us feel just a little better. Most of the time, we close the app within minutes, yet somehow we leave carrying emotions we did not have before opening it.

Perhaps that is why LinkedIn affects us differently from other social media platforms. It doesn’t just show us people’s lives. It shows us their achievements, promotions, dream jobs, certifications, startup launches and career milestones, all neatly packaged into moments of celebration. Slowly, without consciously deciding to, we begin measuring our own progress against these snapshots. A post with thousands of likes can make us question months of quiet hard work while a congratulatory comment on our own post can lift our confidence far more than it probably should.

There is nothing wrong with wanting appreciation. Every human being wants to feel seen and valued for the effort they put in. The problem begins when validation quietly replaces self-belief and our confidence starts rising and falling with numbers that were never designed to measure our worth. The truth is, LinkedIn rarely captures the parts of a career that shape us the most. It doesn’t show the interviews that didn’t work out, the evenings spent learning after exhausting workdays, the self-doubt before taking a leap or the resilience built through rejection.

Maybe the answer isn’t to stop celebrating achievements or stop using LinkedIn altogether. Maybe it’s simply to remember that while recognition from others feels good, the confidence that truly lasts is built in the quiet moments when no one is watching, applauding, or clicking the like button.

India’s Manufacturing Push: Can It Become the Next Global Factory?

Every few decades, the global economy quietly redraws its map. Industries migrate, supply chains shift and countries that once stood on the sidelines suddenly find themselves at the center of global attention. The disruptions of recent years from the pandemic and geopolitical tensions to the growing “China Plus One” strategy adopted by multinational companies have accelerated one such transition. As businesses search for resilient and diversified manufacturing destinations, India finds itself presented with an opportunity that could shape its economic trajectory for decades to come.

The question, however, is not whether India has the potential to become the next global factory, but whether it can convert this moment into a long-term competitive advantage. Manufacturing currently contributes nearly 17 percent to India’s Gross Value Added, against the government’s target of 25 percent. India has already become the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, while the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has encouraged large-scale investments across electronics, pharmaceuticals, and automotive manufacturing.

However, India is not competing in isolation. Countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and Bangladesh have already established themselves as attractive manufacturing destinations. Vietnam has gained from efficient policies and export-led growth, Bangladesh continues to leverage its low-cost labor in sectors like textiles, while Indonesia combines competitive labor costs with abundant natural resources and strategic regional access. In comparison, India still faces challenges such as higher logistics costs, skill gaps, regulatory complexity and land acquisition hurdles.

Even so, India’s strengths remain compelling. A vast domestic market, a young labor force, improving infrastructure through PM Gati Shakti and sustained policy reforms provide a strong foundation. If these advantages are matched with faster execution and continued structural reforms, India will not merely participate in the next manufacturing wave but could emerge as one of the defining production hubs of the twenty-first century.
