When I first considered IVF, I reached out to a group of women to ask if anyone had done it and what their experience was like. Their insights and information were really helpful, and for such an expensive, complex, and emotional process, it seems only right to pass it on!

As a warning, I had a successful egg retrieval and embryo fertilization. We haven’t used the embryos yet, so I don’t know if they will result in a healthy pregnancy and birth, but if reading about that might be upsetting to you, please don’t! I wish you the best on this journey. ❤️

Parenthood

I’m afraid I don’t have a wise perspective on the “should I become a parent” question. I have always wanted to have children, but I didn’t want to have them right now. I don’t know why, but I just don’t have any anxiety or second-guessing about the broader question.

I also don’t (yet?) daydream about being pregnant or a parent—I just knew I wanted to be one, one day.

Deciding to do it

The idea of freezing eggs or embryos wasn’t on my radar until a routine gynecology checkup when I was 31. I casually asked my gynecologist about the age-35 fertility “cliff”—wondering if it was something I actually needed to worry about.

Thirty-five is the age when women’s fertility begins to decline. This number is fraught. Millions of women have healthy pregnancies after 35. But as my gynecologist explained, the eggs I had at 31 would, statistically, be of better quality than the ones I will have at 37 or 40. At an older age, I would be more likely to experience difficulty conceiving, and it would increase the likelihood of both miscarriage and chromosomal abnormalities. Also, not mentioned by her, men’s fertility begins to decline in their late 30s.

I’m from Idaho—everyone I know my age already has kids. I live in New York City now, and none of my close friends have children. Culturally, it’s normal to wait until 35+ to start having kids in our circles. My husband and I both wanted to wait until at least 35, too. We wanted to be further along in our careers, have more financial stability, and enjoy more years together without the responsibility of a family.

The gynecologist recommended that I go to a fertility clinic to assess any markers that may indicate infertility and learn what our options were. I was naive about how IVF worked and knew it was medically invasive and expensive. I assumed I wouldn’t be able to keep my IUD (my extremely beloved form of menstruation and birth control) through the process. The gynecologist assured me that I could go through an egg retrieval with an IUD! Two seconds of thinking about IUDs and the female reproductive system made that obvious (eggs are stored in ovaries, and IUDs are implanted in the uterus to prevent fertilization!).

Financials

I was very fortunate to have fertility benefits through my job.

At my company, benefits were shared (I don’t know if that’s the technical term) between our fertility benefits provider and health insurance. I started the process in 2024, planning to use Optum (my fertility benefits provider) and Independence Blue Cross Blue Shield. Due to scheduling issues and a change in my health insurance provider in 2025, I completed my cycle through Progyny and UMR/United Healthcare in 2025.

My health insurance was an employer-owned plan, and I’d imagine each company’s deal with Progyny is different, so I’m not sure how it works with Progyny and other providers/companies. In my case, I was responsible for meeting my deductible ($500), then 65% of coinsurance until I met my out-of-pocket maximum ($1,750). So, I did not pay more than $1,750 out of pocket for the entire process, including medication. Out-of-pocket costs would have ranged from 20 to 30k.

When I learned I would have to push my cycle into 2025, I made a large FSA contribution during open enrollment so I could pay all OOP fertility expenses (all $1750) with the FSA. I also put other qualified expenses on my FSA, such as Uber to and from the procedure. My pharmacy insurance covered the medication 100%.

My benefits covered the whole cycle (beyond my $1,750 responsibility), including PGT-A testing (as I understood it, PGT-A would not have been covered under Optum, which would have added about $4k in expenses). After the first year, we are responsible for paying embryo freezer rent lol, which is $1200/year.

$1,750 for one cycle of IVF is… amazing. And why I was able to do this. If we had to pay out of pocket, we would likely not have frozen embryos.

Making the decision

I was lucky to have a handful of “centers of excellence” to choose from through the fertility benefits provider. I decided on the Brooklyn office of NYU Langone, mostly because I trusted a university hospital system more than a private fertility clinic, and because it was a convenient train ride from me.

Over the course of a few visits, we did fertility testing—blood work for my AMH and an ultrasound (to assess how many egg follicles I had), and my spouse did a sperm analysis.

We also opted to do genetic carrier screening. This is bloodwork that screens each of us for hundreds of genetic disorders, and cross-compares to see if we would pass on an overlapping genetic disorder (life-altering disorders, such as cystic fibrosis) to our children. My insurance covered this testing. Our tests came back with no infertility markers, and though we each were carriers of genetic disorders, ours did not overlap.

This was wonderful, reassuring news, and we decided to freeze embryos (fertilized eggs). We elected to freeze embryos, not just my eggs, because embryos have a higher chance of surviving thawing. This is typically the recommendation if you have a spouse or plan to use donor sperm.

If we had gotten to this point, where we learned we didn’t have risk factors for infertility and would have had to pay out of pocket, we likely would have stopped the process. IVF in the United States costs anywhere from 20 to 30k. If we had discovered indications of infertility, we may have pursued embryonic freezing out of pocket, since it is better to be younger.

We’re still unsure when I will try to get pregnant, but 35 would be the youngest. We plan to have two children, so I could be pushing 40 or older for a second pregnancy, in which case we would likely use the embryos if we don’t use them for the first pregnancy.

IVF is a lot to go through. At many points, I wondered whether I was unnecessarily putting myself through this process. But I ultimately made a decision that I thought was right for myself and my family, and I think anyone who goes through this process does, too! I’ve overheard comments (and been on the receiving end) that categorize egg and embryo freezing as a trend of wealthy, career-focused women (god forbid!). Obviously, this is the U.S., and where there is capitalism, there will be corruption. But it’s condescending to women and couples who make these decisions with whatever set of complex variables they are dealt—costs, literal hormone levels, co-parent status, fertility benefits—to belittle this as a trend.

To be honest, it does feel complicated, as this was ultimately a choice, not a last resort. I feel empathetic that we had a positive outcome when so many people who go through this process don’t. (I do not feel guilty about using my work benefits, as those benefits were part of my compensation!)

But it’s not easy, flexible, or without costs—financially, emotionally, or physically—to go through this process! I have so much empathy and regard for anyone experiencing infertility and going through the taxing and, quite frankly, awful experience of IVF.

Getting ready

Preparing for an egg retrieval depends on each patient’s lifestyle and health history. I was on spironolactone, a prescription medication to treat hormonal acne (love you, girl). It’s a medication that impacts hormones, and I was off it for four months before the process. I also stopped using two topical acne medications the month before and during the cycle.

My spouse and I were advised to stop using marijuana (I take edibles for sleep and anxiety). I was advised to start taking a prenatal vitamin and CoQ10, and my husband took a multivitamin as well. During my stims cycle, I took melatonin every night to help with sleep, as there is some research that melatonin is helpful for fertility.

I was recommended the book It Starts With the Egg by Rebecca Fett. I asked my doctor about the book, and she told me I could read it, but to take some of the guidance, particularly around supplements, with a grain of salt.

My spouse and I already had a very healthy, whole-food-focused diet, but the book inspired me to wean off fragrances (a well-known endocrine disruptor) in my beauty products. I also told my husband to stop eating non-organic blueberries (of all things…) lol!

The month before my retrieval, I stopped drinking alcohol and was extra diligent about not eating any non-organic or ultra-processed foods. This process felt so out of my control that I felt like I needed to control something.

The process

Physically, IVF was not the most difficult or physically painful thing I’ve experienced, but mentally I kinda lost my mind.

In some ways, I’m glad I didn’t go into the process expecting it to impact my mental health in such an extreme manner, but the hormones hit me like a truck. I had to take oral birth control for one week before starting “stims” (the hormonal injections you’re typically on for 10 to 12 days), and I immediately remembered why I love my IUD. I must be particularly sensitive to synthetic hormones.

The hormonal “stims” medication made me depressed, anxious, and gave me feelings of hopelessness. I would swing from feeling neutral to feeling despondent and upset within minutes. My husband says he’s never seen me like that before.

I’ve spoken with and read about many other people’s experiences, and it really runs the gamut. I’ve heard from women with similar experiences, and others who didn’t find it a big deal. I’ve also read that it can vary from cycle to cycle if you do multiple cycles, which most people have to do.

The medication is delivered via injections in the abdomen, and your egg follicles are swollen to 15x (!!!) their size. Once you start the stims, you have to start getting bloodwork done every other day to monitor levels, and at some points, the doctors will change your doses.

I wasn’t particularly afraid of the twice-daily injections, which my husband injected for me. Still, I felt extremely anxious about making a mistake in preparing, mixing (!!!), timing, and dosing each injection, and each night I grew increasingly anxious in the hour leading up to the injections. This did get easier mentally after day 5 or 6, but I dreaded it each night and had a sobbing breakdown about it twice.

I did not feel like myself at all. This was a difficult time in my life in general—my cat had died a few weeks prior, Trump was inaugurated, and my work (in news) was stressful and exhausting. It was also winter, and it was particularly cold and snowy. My coping mechanisms (weed and exercise) were off-limits.

I also chose to limit my exposure to germs and other people because I did not want to be sick while taking stims or for the retrieval, so I worked from home and limited social activities. I don’t think it was necessarily wise to isolate myself at home, but honestly, I would do it again—norovirus, the flu, and COVID were floating around at the time, and I think the tradeoff was the right choice for me. (I also wore a mask when I was on the subway.)

The list of the stims’ side effects was a checklist. The mood swings and feelings of depression were the worst, but I got the headaches, bloat, and cramping. Around day 6, it was uncomfortable to sit for more than 20 minutes. It genuinely felt like my ovaries were touching my lungs.

The retrieval

After 10 to 12 days of daily medication and bloodwork, I finally had a date for the retrieval. The Brooklyn NYU Langone office for retrieval is on Long Island. I stayed at my friend’s house the night before and Ubered there (and then Ubered home to Brooklyn).

The procedure is outpatient and in the U.S., and you’re fully asleep and under sedation. The best part of the entire process! It lasts about 15 minutes. I cried after the retrieval because I was so happy it was over. Katy Perry’s “Roar” was playing in the recovery room, which could have been why I was crying.

I was in bed at home for about two days, during which I decided to watch the medical drama, The Pitt (?!). I was in a moderate amount of pain and was advised to use extra-strength Tylenol to treat it, and I was best friends with my heating pad. I felt pretty uncomfortable for about 48 hours, and then felt back to myself about 4 days after the retrieval, though I did avoid strenuous exercise for a couple of weeks.

(Some people also take laxatives leading up to the retrieval, so talk to your doctor or nurse about that.)

Mentally, I felt emotionally hungover for a day, but I felt back to my normal self pretty quickly. I think I was so happy that it was over, and of course I wasn’t being injected with huge amounts of hormones. I did feel on edge until we got the results from the embryo testing.

The embryos

My husband came to the clinic to provide a fresh sample (and escort me home), and the embryologists immediately fertilized the retrieved eggs and grew the embryos. At the 5-day mark, they test the embryo cells for chromosomes (PGT-A testing). At this point, they can also determine the sex of each embryo from the chromosomes, which is kinda crazy. The embryos are then frozen and stored until we elect to either implant or discard.

My tips

If you can, choose a convenient clinic. During your stims cycle, you have to get bloodwork and a pelvic ultrasound done every other day, and typically in the early morning before work. I was already uncomfortable and not sleeping well, so I would have dreaded an hour on the subway at 7 a.m.

(I had some egg follicles that were growing too rapidly, so I started getting daily blood work done after day 5!)

Ask your doctor for realistic expectations for egg and embryo numbers for your situation, so you go in with as much statistical information as possible. The process can be disappointing, and some (most?) people have to go through several cycles. I tried to keep my expectations low and realistic.

For instance, I had 13 egg follicles. Typically, you get one egg per follicle. 60 to 70% of those eggs will be mature. All mature eggs will be fertilized. 30 to 50% of those fertilized eggs will result in healthy, euploid embryos. So, statistically, I should expect 2 to 4 healthy embryos with my 13 follicles.

Again, this is a statistic, but 3 euploid embryos have a 95% chance of resulting in a single healthy pregnancy.

Remember, though, statistics are dependent on the group! Typically, people who go through IVF are older or experiencing infertility, meaning the numbers are skewed toward the majority. Since we weren’t experiencing known infertility, our final healthy euploid embryo numbers were much higher than 2 to 4.

I believe the recommendation for eggs is to have 20 frozen eggs to achieve a single healthy pregnancy. If I had been freezing only eggs, I would have (maybe?) done another cycle, as I had 12 mature eggs (at age 32).

Do not read the IVF Reddit when going through stims, unless you are looking for something very specific. But do not browse. I regretted it every time I did lol.

My clinic recommended not exercising at all while on stims, but do go on walks! I made myself walk every day.

The needles are smaller than you think.

Some significant complications can happen during this process. Ask your doctor about OHSS. Some people, particularly those with PCOS, are more likely to get OHSS, an extremely painful complication.

My doctor gave a handful of vitamin recommendations, and I went with Theralogix. I took the prenatal ($41) and CoQ10 ($80). My spouse took their male fertility vitamin ($78).

My last thought

After going through this process, I feel more strongly than ever about birth control being the greatest invention for women’s liberation.

I feel more strongly pro-choice, too! I am lucky to live in a state and be of a generation that can choose when, how, and whether I want to be a mother, and incandescently angry for every girl and woman who doesn’t get the same set of choices I did. Reproductive healthcare and abortion for all!

🟢 Salt & Stone deodorant

I was a faithful Mitchum Men’s roll-on deodorant user ($6) for many years. My dad has always used this deodorant (lol), and it really works.

Now, I’m not concerned about aluminum in deodorant (did you know that rumor circulated via a chain email in the 90s? And has since been debunked), but I wanted to stop using a deodorant with antiperspirant (which is aluminum, but let me explain) simply because I don’t need it. I’m not a particularly sweaty person, and I didn’t love the idea that a topical product was preventing a perfectly natural process like sweating. I figured that if I tried a deodorant without antiperspirant and I stunk, I would go back to my faithful Mitchum.

Like skincare, deodorant has evolved a lot in the last few years, with smaller brands at the forefront of innovation. I started with Nécessaire’s mandelic acid deodorant in Eucalyptus ($24), and have been content with it. I ran out a bit ago, and I’ve seen that beauty influencers seem to really like the Salt & Stone brand; I gave it a try. I purchased “Bergamot & Hinoki” and find it basically comparable to Nécessaire! And Salt & Stone is a few dollars cheaper at $20.

What’s life like post-antiperspirant? I notice my armpits sweat more than they used to in the summertime, but that’s fine! But when they invent an antiperspirant for the upper lip, call me.

🔴 Odele Hair Oil

I was intrigued by this hair oil for the price point ($13) and its promises of being “lightweight,” which I interpreted as “for you thin-haired bitches.”

I have relatively fine hair that is a bit damaged and dried out from being long and dyed platinum blonde. I have this idea (fantasy?) that a hair oil will make my dry ends silky and soft. I’m pretty sure this is a belief I’ve fully invented for my hair type, despite every hair oil I’ve purchased making my ends look stringy and oily. A girl can dream.

This hair oil was no different, and is only marginally less oily than other hair oil treatments like Olaplex (which, for the record, I don’t think do much for my hair). I then noticed on the Odele packaging that it’s not recommended to use with heat tools. I try to only use a curling iron once a week, but I need the freedom to curl my hair at any moment if I do so desire. All this to say, I’m giving up on my hair oil fantasies.

🟡 Soft Services Buffing Bar

I’ve seen the Substack girlies recommending this exfoliating bar by Soft Services ($30) for a while now. Reminiscent of Lush’s Buffy bar (throwback!!!), it’s a physical exfoliant meant for the body.

I love the sensorial experience of this bar. It’s like wet sandpaper in the best way possible, and it feels like you’re scratching a deep itch. But I can’t say I’ve really noticed a difference in the softness or brightness of my skin. I think I actually might prefer something like the Buffy that also has a moisturizing emollient to get that “I am so soft now” feeling.

I didn’t love the price point, either, but I was pleased to discover that it comes with two bars. Would I buy this again? Maybe as a gift for my husband who says he loves using it.

🟢 DAMDAM Moisturizer

This product was sent to me by DAMDAM to try, and to be honest, I sort of hate that I love this $48 moisturizer so much.

It makes my skin so glassy, hydrated, and plump. I’m a little shook. I don’t love that it’s in a tub (I hate putting my fingers in there), but it’s the only topical product (other than Paula’s Choice BHA Exfoliant, another OG) where I can see a visible difference. Consider me sold.

🟢 Hanni Skin Salve (Unscented)

I shared last year how I got hooked on this in-shower salve by Hanni ($36) that replaces post-shower body lotion. IDK why, but I hate putting on lotion after getting out of the shower; I find it so annoying to rub in.

I finally used up my tub, though, and was pleased to see that Hanni was now offering an unscented version of the product. I try to reduce the amount of synthetic fragrances I use, as synthetic fragrances seem to be endocrine disruptors.

🟢 Uni Body Serum

I was sent this “body serum” by Uni ($43) and have been using it a lot this summer. I sometimes forget to apply the Hanni salve while in the shower, and I like this serum more than body lotion. It’s very lightweight, so I don’t feel like I’m rubbing greasy lotion into my skin. I’m not positive of how it’d hold up as a wintertime body lotion, but for the summer it’s been great! I probably won’t rebuy until they offer an unscented version, just because I find scented lotion unnecessary. The scent is nice though.

I like that it comes packaged in an aluminum container (much more recyclable than plastic), and that they sell a refill bottle without the plastic pump. More skincare companies do this, please!

YouTube

Big ups and big downs!

In April, I had two YouTube videos go viral. First was a video about using less single-use plastic in the kitchen (loosely based on some newsletters I wrote last year), and then, on its coattails, my Instant Pot Yogurt video.

Two weeks later, I had gained 1000 subscribers and was monetized on YouTube AdSense. I was flying high. I had finally cracked the code!

And then a dud video (1k views), then another dud (700 views), then another dud (800 views). I tried to follow the same thumbnail and title formula as the successful videos, but it didn’t work.

The whiplash of platform algorithms is real, and especially frustrating for long-form YouTube videos that require at least 15 hours of work (and several hundred dollars in editing fees). It’s also discouraging to have view counts far below my subscriber numbers.

Going forward, my short-term strategy will be to do more single-recipe, from-scratch videos like the yogurt video (coming up, homemade peanut butter!), and the Project Pantry series.

I’m also trying to focus on quality and algorithmic fit rather than racing to publish a video every week—one 20k video is more valuable (and cheaper for me to produce) than three 1k videos.

Takeaway: In retrospect, I’m not too surprised viewers didn’t engage with the cookbooks video. Unfortunately, I think there is low interest in cookbooks. I wasn’t too surprised that my gardening video didn’t do especially well, either, because it was outside my niche. I’m proud of that video, and it was good practice for filming outdoors, something I’d never done before.

The video that hurt was my CSA prep video. These are the types of videos I want to make long-term—long cooking days in the kitchen with chit-chat, and videos I see done successfully elsewhere. I’m not giving up on them, but it was a bummer.

My last freelance contract ended on March 31, and I spent April and May looking for my next freelance opportunity (and working on my projects, obviously). Luckily, I had oversaved for my 2025 taxes and was able to use that cash, plus some other non-tax business savings, to pay my salary in April, May, and June.

🖤 Logitech MX vertical mouse

Last year, when I was deep into a production design gig and simultaneously trying to learn to edit video, I began developing carpal tunnel from the Mac trackpad I used as a mouse. Something needed to change.

I asked around for recommendations, and several friends recommended the Logitech MX Vertical mouse ($120, but on sale now for $90). It’s not chic, but the impact on my wrist was immediate. I bought a refurbished one from Logitech ($90) and was pleasantly surprised to find it packaged entirely in compostable paper. Hell yeah.

My friend Meg, who doesn’t like vertical mice, recommends this gaming mouse from Razer ($160) but turns the lights off because she’s “not a fuckin’ Twitch streamer.”

🖤 Wet Ones hand sanitizing wipes

I always have a package of these in my “personal item” travel bag (the Baggu Cloud Carry-on, $86), and they’ve made me the hero of the plane more than a few times.

Last year, my seat neighbor slipped his phone into the seatback pocket, and out it came, chewing gum stuck to it. These wipes ($18 for a pack of 10) saved the day. They have made me the guardian angel of more than a few plane trips, to mop up the mystery liquid on the seat of a woman in front of me, and an anxious germaphobe brave enough to ask if they could have one too, as I wiped down my seatback, touch screen, and armrests. The best dry shampoo is spironolactone. IYKYK. The second-best dry shampoo is this powder by Ceremonia ($28). I just tested it on my husband’s brown, nearly black hair, and it blended out well!

I’ll finish my no-nonsense skincare routine post one of these days, but I’ve been using CeraVe’s hydrating face wash for years now. I have very dry skin that needs all the help it can get, and this face wash delivers (I even find Vanicream slightly drying!).

I buy my drugstore products directly from Ulta, as I don’t trust Amazon’s dropshipping (well-reported issues with counterfeit personal care products). I’ve tried a lot of no-plastic products over the years, and dishwasher detergent was one of the more difficult ones to replace.

There’s a debate about whether PVA, which many transparent pod-style detergents are encased in, actually biodegrades in water. But then, the powder detergents I tried didn’t work effectively. I finally discovered Dirty Labs ($20) and fully switched. Packaging is totally plastic-free!

It’s been lonely, though, and isolating.

I don’t have any friends who’ve launched a YouTube channel or a tight network of newsletter writers or other online “creators” to bounce ideas, problems, and successes off of. Though a long time ago now, the death of Twitter feels intertwined, too. Where are people chit-chatting? I miss the chit-chat!

I’ve looked around for online communities to join, but none have quite fit what I’m looking for—a place for media business solopreneurs, freelancers, creators, and portfolio-career people to congregate and discuss strategy, trends, and successes. So I’ve taken it upon myself to start up a Discord, the Saltine Salon.

If you haven’t used Discord before, it’s a similar forum/chat app to Slack or Teams.

Tolstoy and Dunham

One of my goals for my Jesus Year was to read more classics, and I finally finished Anna Karenina (Bookshop, Amazon). I started the 800-page novel in September of last year and read the second half over the past month. The book is broken into hundreds of short chapters/scenes, which worked well for digesting a few at a time before starting my workday. I don’t know if I loved it, but I’m glad I read it! I’ve decided to read War and Peace, but, uh, next year.

I picked Lena Dunham’s new memoir, Famesick (Bookshop, Amazon), for our April book club read, knowing it’d be a talker. I enjoyed it! I never watched Girls because I found it stressful at the time (“too real,” as they say), but I was a girl on the internet from 2012 to 2018, so I’m well-versed in Dunham lore. I thought it was interesting and funny, and a vivid portrait of a time. It could have used some stronger editing, though.

I also inhaled The Land In Winter by Andrew Miller (Bookshop, Amazon). What characters! I wanted it for a book club read, but I think I’m going to wait until wintertime—this is the perfect book to read between Christmas and New Year’s.

Let’s see… I read Trust by Hernan Diaz and hated it. I think I’ve only liked one Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, they chose good writers, but the wrong book!

I liked Deborah Levy’s Hot Milk (Bookshop, Amazon); I’m such a Levy head, though I wish the second half were as intriguing and visceral as the first.

Carrie, Daisy, and Martha

I’m not much of a TV watcher—I watch YouTube, read books (and scroll, if we’re being honest). I’ll tap in for the zeitgeisty HBO show of the moment, but I either get stressed out or bored.

But I’ve been feeling a TV spark since my husband and I finished all eight seasons of Homeland a few months ago. (I need there to be a Homelandaissance simply because I need to discuss the monstrosity that are seasons 4 and 5. Rupert Friend should not have made those character decisions! But the final season was awesome, and I have a Carrie/Saul-shaped hole in my heart now.)

And then I’m not typically a reality TV watcher beyond American Traitors, but my friends got me hooked on Ladies of London. So much stupid drama, but I’d die for Martha!!!

Something was unleashed because my husband and I are now obsessed with Below Deck: Down Under. I think we are going to have a finale watch party.

And then this is my second year with a newfound interest in playoff basketball. I spend most of the game googling everyone’s height and age and quizzing my husband on NBA facts. Go Knicks!

Farmacy and k18

Okay, that header is not as fun as the others.

I was gifted a few things to try from two of my favorite beauty brands, Farmacy and k18.

I might permanently switch from my favorite hair mask (Amika, $24+) to K18’s leave-in mask ($75). The bottle recommends using it a few times in a row, and I felt a noticeable difference in the smoothness of my hair. Salon assistants always marvel at how healthy my platinum blonde hair is. I owe it to Kaitlin (my colorist at Scott J. Aveda), my natural 7-level blonde, limited heat tools, and now this leave-in mask. Also available at Sephora.

I tried a few products from Farmacy—I love their hydrating essence ($34)! Though I fear the Honey Halo moisturizer ($45) is not tough enough for my very dry skin. I don’t typically enjoy products in tubs—I don’t like putting my finger in the tub and always lose the little paddle, but this one is magnetized to the lid! If you have less-dry skin and like a gel moisturizer with a cream feel, this might be a good fit for you.

The standout Farmacy product for me is their lip smoothie lip balm ($22). It’s way less sticky than Laneige’s overnight mask ($24), and I’ve been switching between the two before bed. That’s the key to these lip masks—a thick layer every night. I barely reapply lip balm during the day, even in the winter.

I was also gifted a stunning East Fork mixing bowl ($180) from their new Lagoon color collection. It’s becoming the star of my YouTube channel!

I haven’t been buying many clothes since my February eBay blitz, but I did buy a pair of Levi’s shorts ($75) when I was in Palm Springs. I featured them last week in my summer outfit post.

Holly, Harry, and Kacey

After a sort of dud year (IMO) for new music, I am loving Holly Humberstone’s new album, Cruel World. I’m waiting for Holly’s big break, but if you like girly pop with a ballad edge, you’ll love Holly!

I’m also liking the new MUNA album and new Kacey Musgraves. Harry Styles’ last album was perfect to me, and his new one isn’t as good, but still enjoyable.

Other than Harry, the only boy I listen to is Dijon, whom my husband put me on to. You know that theory on straight men who do or don’t like women? Dijon likes women.

We had a concerning May heatwave in NYC this week, and I can’t help but admit I enjoyed it. I’ll take 90 degrees over 30 any day!

April marked my tenth year of living in NYC! I’m a real New Yorker now.

I first moved here from Idaho as an 18-year-old homeschooled girl. I went to a very expensive art school for a year, but I was smart and quickly realized I was the only student without their parents’ credit card, so I left and finished school in Oregon.

As I said, I was smart, and as soon as I could, I moved back. Once a girl gets a taste of a city, it changes her whole palate.

I love living in New York City. I love feeling anonymous on the subway as much as I love running into a friend in a random neighborhood. I love the cacophony of birds on a morning walk and how I can get anything I need and go anywhere I need to go—on the train or on my own two feet.

Below you’ll find my guide to NYC—the restaurants, shops, and places that add up to make this very special city. This list is specific to the fact that I’ve always lived in South or Central Brooklyn and worked in Manhattan. Sorry to Queens, it’s not personal!!!

Compared to the West Coast, New York does not have great vegan and vegetarian food, but there are a few spots holding it down for us.

Toad Style (Bed Stuy)
Takeout-style vegan comfort food—I love their veggie burger!

Zaca Cafe (Bed Stuy)
Not vegan or vegetarian, but they make one of my favorite housemade veggie burgers. I like to add blue cheese.

Seitan’s Helper (Bushwick)
Awesome sandwiches with housemade vegan “meat.”

Ras Plant Based (Crown Heights)
Excellent vegan Ethiopian food.

Superiority Burger (East Village)
My favorite place to take out-of-town visitors. Fun vibe, interesting menu. I recommend the fried tofu sandwich and their veggie burger. You can’t really go wrong here, though.

Dimes (Lower East Side)
Not vegan, but healthy California food in a vibey cafe.

I just visited this spot—they mill grain here fresh and have an amazing pastry case. Great bread, too.

Radio Bakery (Prospect Heights)
I’ve only been to the Prospect Heights location and have never waited for more than 15 minutes. The seasonal focaccia sandwiches are so good, and the triple chocolate croissant is one of the best things on the menu.

Crust Baker (Prospect Lefferts Garden)
The second-best sourdough loaf in New York City

Crave Sourdough (Williamsburg)
The best sourdough loaf in New York City. Open only on Thursdays and Fridays.

Coffee shops and cafes

Rita & Maria (Bed Stuy)
Charming cafe and a great spot to read. I like to treat myself to their vanilla latte.

Italian coffee shop, delicious sandwiches.

New “Indian-ish” cafe. The egg paratha is sooooo good.

Solid coffee, great people-watching.

The home cook corner

SOS Chefs (East Village)
Coolest shop in New York City. She has every hard-to-find ingredient and the most interesting vinegars.

Sahadis (Brooklyn Heights)
Great Middle Eastern deli, love their hummus, tzatziki, and salads. Their bulk section has the best almonds! (Thank you, Zara, for this recommendation.) Good cheese and butter selection, too.

Fong On (Chinatown)
Where I buy fresh tofu, but get the savory tofu custard to go!

H Mart (K-Town)
Korean supermarket. You’ll find what you need.

Middle East and Indian Spice Shop (Bed Stuy)
Awesome spice shop with things like paneer, fresh turmeric, and curry leaves.

Bookstores

I think the Strand is overrated and chaotic—I much prefer McNally Jackson (locations across the city). My favorite bookstore, though, is Unnameable Books in Prospect Heights.

Recommendations for visitors

In addition to all the great restaurants in New York City, I would recommend our wonderful art museums—the Met and MoMA are must-visits. Though the Whitney, the Frick, the Met Cloisters, and Cooper Hewitt certainly make the list. I’d also recommend the Tenement Museum.

We love taking visitors to the Comedy Cellar—buy tickets in advance for a late-night weekend show. For live music, it’s worth a trip to LunÁtico in Bed Stuy. Just get there early enough to nab a seat, especially on weekend nights.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Prospect Park, and Central Park, of course, are lovely. Check out our farmers’ markets—most are open Fridays–Sundays. The Wednesday Union Square market is where the restaurant chefs go; you’ll always find something unique.

Airbnbs are illegal here, so you’ll have to book a hotel. I’ve enjoyed staycations at both Hotel Chelsea and the Public Hotel, but the Ace Hotel in Brooklyn is a little more affordable, and it’s right off the A/C line—very convenient to JFK.

I use Google Maps to get around. Bring good walking shoes!

One of my goals for my Jesus Year was to complete The Artist’s Way, and the week before Thanksgiving, I quietly finished it.

I found the program both fruitful and surprising, and I’d like to invite you to do it with me again!

If you don’t know about The Artist’s Way (and the meme, at this point), the book is a woo-woo “creative recovery” program by writer and artist Julia Cameron, and probably something your most eccentric friend has feverishly done during a time of personal and creative crisis.

The program involves handwriting three pages of stream-of-consciousness thoughts every morning, a weekly solo “artist’s date,” and weekly writing prompts and exercises.

Last year, I fell off reading the book around week 6 or 7 and committed to only a fraction of the “artist’s dates,” but I did the Morning Pages every single day.

I’ve gone through short phases of morning journaling over the years and have an on-and-off relationship with my paper journal, but journaling 750 words every day for 12 weeks was transformative in a way I didn’t quite expect.

Before I began, I thought the Pages would be more generative and useful for my work, and while a few things I published last year came from them, the Pages were, for me, much more like exercise or a shower. A habit to stay clean and/or sane. Mine involved a lot of complaining!

I really liked the artist’s dates. I went on one that I still think about—I paid my requisite $1 as an NYC resident at the Met and wandered around the Greco-Roman rooms for a while. I had a perfect day that day—a movie with friends, a slice of pizza, and too many bottles of wine—but the solo activity and the walk back through the park shifted something in me.

The club

I’d like to do it again, this time committing to the book, the weekly exercises, and artist’s dates.

Things like this are easier with accountability and camaraderie, and I want to invite you to do it with me.

The book calls these Creative Clusters, and I sort of hate that, so we’ll call it The Artist’s Way Book Club.

We will begin two weeks from now, on May 18. This should give you enough time to get a copy of the book or, if you’ve done it before, dig it out from your storage unit.

I will be hosting a weekly chat on Mondays in the Saltine chat on the Substack app. We can chat about how it’s going, what you’re noticing, and/or gossip about how Julia Cameron was married to Martin Scorsese for a year in the 70s.

Despite working for the National Broadcasting Company and in digital media for 10 years, I had no video experience before launching my home cooking YouTube Channel, Home Food TV, five months ago.

I went to art school for communication design and hated my motion graphics class. When I see an animator or editor work, I’m in awe. My brain does not work in motion. Short-form video, too, has been a steep learning curve. I didn’t adapt to talking-to-camera Instagram Stories, much less an edited TikTok! Needless to say, I’m most comfortable with written words and the static image.

Despite this, when I quit my job last year, a YouTube channel was at the top of my business plan. Partly because I believe YouTube has longevity and stability that the short-form platforms don’t, and I was also a huge YouTube consumer. I like watching long-form videos (vs. my short-form addiction that feels well, like, an addiction) and could see myself liking the process of making my own.

Home Food

I don’t know; I’m just not a TV watcher. I will watch the hot HBO series of the moment because I like to Participate In The Zeitgeist, but otherwise, turning on Netflix when I’m bored doesn’t occur to me. I have the sort of attention span that allows me to read 100 pages of a book in a sitting, but I struggle to sit through two hour-long TV episodes without getting antsy…

And so far, I do! After a career spent in front of a computer, I love being on my feet and cooking throughout the workday. I’m still not 100% comfortable talking to the camera and have to do much more prep and writing than I expected, but I look forward to my filming day every week and am starting to feel proud of the final product (I could barely watch my first videos).

Growth has been slower than I had hoped, but with each video, I learn. I hope to come back here in a year and share the growth strategies that worked for me (subscribe and watch Home Food TV!), but before all that, I wanted to share how I launched the channel, if you, too, are thinking of starting your own.

The equipment

Many people started (or still use!) iPhones to film long-form content. That’s probably a more sensible place to start, especially if you’re trying it out. But I’m an art director who knows how to take a photo—I wanted a specific look and level of polish for my videos. Since I didn’t have other video skills (like talking to the camera or editing), I focused on making the clips look beautiful.

I started by creating a deck of the look I was going for, then did some preliminary camera research in a separate document.

I asked my husband’s good friends Steve and Griffin (hire The Family for video production!) to read through my equipment research document. They were generous and made suggestions on cameras, lighting, and other equipment. With their help, I ended up purchasing the following.

I bought the Sony FX30 (B&H, Amazon). I went with Sony because they’re making the best vlogging cameras right now. There’s the Sony ZV-1 (B&H, Amazon), which everyone recommends for vloggers, but I read it can overheat during multi-hour shooting sessions. I was going to film all day in the kitchen, and didn’t want to be interrupted. I decided to go one step up with FX30.

I’ve been very happy with this camera! Steve came over to my house, set my settings correctly, and gave me pointers on ISO, frame rates, and file types. That was super helpful.

Camera accessories:

• One annoying thing about this camera is that it uses a weird memory card—a CFExpress Type A. They are pricey. I have just one right now from Nextorage (Amazon), but I should probably get an additional card.

• I bought this card reader (B&H).

• Video blows through battery! I have just one battery, but I keep the camera plugged in while I’m shooting via this Anker 10-foot cord (Amazon) and my MacBook wall charger.

  • Note: The charging cord provides a continuous power supply to the camera while in use, but does not charge it (it does charge when the camera is off).

• My tripod is a Benro that I got for $100 off Facebook Marketplace. I don’t love this tripod, and might head into B&H soon to look at other options.

The lens

I took a cue from Steve’s suggestion and got the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G lens (Adorama, Amazon). At first, I wondered if I should get a lower f-stop lens, but with the lights, it’s been totally fine. The range (20m to 70mm) is perfect for shooting in a small space, too, and I use the zoom more than I thought I would.

Lens accessories:

• I bought a Tiffen filter (Amazon) so that if I scratch the lens, I would only scratch the filter.

The lighting

I have fantasies about a huge, naturally-lit kitchen, but in the meantime, I must use lights. We are in a ground-level apartment, and our kitchen is in the center. It barely gets enough sunlight to cook, let alone enough light to look good on camera.

Griffin and Steve suggested I get two Amaran COB 200x S Bi-Color LED Monolights (Amazon). In addition to the lights themselves, I also had to get light stands (B&H) and light domes (both styles I bought have been discontinued).

Griffin and Steve came over after I got my equipment and showed me how to place and set up the lights.

Filming accessories

For filming yourself like this, you really need a monitor. I use the Sony app on an iPad that I already have.

The audio

I purchased the DJI Mic Mini II (Amazon, B&H) for iPhone video, and it works great with my Sony camera too. I don’t like the look of it on my shirt, and since I don’t talk to the camera much, I usually take it off and set the mic on the countertop to capture ambient audio.

For my voiceover, I use an SMB7B mic (Amazon) that my husband already had. It’s hooked up to a Focusrite Scarlet audio interface (Amazon), and I record directly into Adobe Premiere onto the video timeline.

Production

I’m sure I’ll continue to fine-tune my production system, but right now I work out of a Google Doc. Here is where I plan out the schedule, deliver the project folders and notes to my editor, make shotlists, and write titles and voiceover scripts.

Below the schedule, I create a section for each video and typically write out a few titles before I shoot. I also make a shot list and a grocery shopping list.

I’m not great at talking to the camera (yet), so I find it most efficient to film and then write and record the voiceover. I tried to freestyle the voiceover, but anyone who has had a conversation with me knows how meandering that can get, so I have to write it first. I spend the most time on the intro, and then I record and write as I go through the video. Sometimes I’ll go back and re-record the intro once my voice has warmed up.

My schedule right now:

• Fridays: Film

• Mondays: Transfer footage, drop into a Premiere project, color-code sections, and start writing the intro

• Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays: Write and record VO, package and upload folder, and deliver to editor

Editing

I cried while trying to learn Adobe Premiere Pro—partly because I am naturally impatient about learning new things, and partly because Adobe products were designed in a lab to PMO. I went with Premiere (vs. DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut) because I knew I would eventually outsource editing and the editor would likely use Premiere. My husband and I share an Adobe subscription, so it also felt “free.” I’m now OK with using the program, but I still think it’s badly designed and annoying!!!

After repeatedly trying and failing to edit my first videos in a timely manner, I decided to hire a video editor (and friend!), Matt Ross, to handle the bulk of the editing.

What we do right now is: I transfer the video footage to a Samsung T7 hard drive (B&H, Amazon), make a Premiere Project, and drop in the footage in chronological order. I then go through and color-code the clips for each section of the video—sometimes removing or reordering them, depending on how I’m structuring it. If I do a talking-to-the-camera bit, I usually do a light edit on it.

I record the voiceover directly into Adobe Premiere. I then upload the footage into a parent folder with the Premiere project and deliver it to Matt. Matt makes a first edit, I give some notes, and then Matt colors it and delivers a 4K export to me.

When I review the first edit, I jot down anything I mention that I will link in the description, then reference it when I write the description.

Publishing

I continue to iterate on the titles I wrote before filming. I use the A/B testing tool in the YouTube backend to test combinations of titles and thumbnails.

I film the thumbnails using my video camera on film day. I pose with the camera running and try a handful of poses to have options. These are deeply humiliating to watch back.

I add these clips into the Premiere project, add a LUT, and export the stills. I typically edit the image in Lightroom on iOS, then return to my computer to create a thumbnail in Canva.

The TLDR is that I did not (still don’t!) have large online audiences and have relied on freelance 1099 work to pay myself and my business expenses. I was a Senior Director at a news organization and have experience as a designer, art director, and creative director. So far, I have been hired for creative direction for paid and organic social. (I am currently available, see my consulting menu here!)

Here’s how it’s going financially:

• I dipped into one month of my 6-month emergency fund (September of last year) because I needed to use my first freelance checks to pay for YouTube equipment.

• I met my monthly income goal for 2025, and so far in 2026, I am making 67% of my monthly income goal

  • My 2026 income goal is the amount I was making at my FT job, including retirement benefits.

• That said, I am earning enough to pay my salary, set aside money for taxes, and cover all business expenses. That’s a win, but I have big goals and a long way to go.

This is an amazing piece—100% cotton, true vintage L.L.Bean, and I could tell from the listing photo, nice drape.

I made a $17 offer on the $24 listing. The price was due to two missing buttons and a stain on the back. I am going to replace the buttons as soon as I can make it over to the garment district (mother-of-pearl to match the others; it’s absolutely the right material for this sweater).

The (small) stain is a little more complex, and I’m thinking I’ll embroider over it, but I’m going to do more TikTok mending research. Let me know if you have thoughts. I think I will wear it buttoned as a sweater.

I wish the straps were longer, but that’s fine; it comes with strap hooks! So I’m going to find a lengthening strap to hook on for longer treks.

I thought I had a solid grasp of problem-solving and how I preferred to work, but I’ve been surprised to learn that in this new context, I would have to develop new ways of working and creating. I’ve also had a few pleasant surprises—skills I didn’t know I was growing that have turned out to be key.

Here are a few of those random lessons learned.

Exercise is an oddly effective energizer

I exercise to feel good—that’s it. The aesthetic and health benefits are a nice bonus, I guess, but as a non-athlete, those two things don’t motivate me to get on the mat or on the bike.

My mental health hinges on movement, and despite knowing this, I found it difficult to work out consistently (more than 2, maybe 3 times a week) when I had a corporate job.

I’m not not an early riser, but I don’t do well on less than 8 hours of sleep. I found it difficult to be asleep by 10 pm, get up around 6, then work out before work. (I’ve also had a 10-year-long insomnia battle where I have a difficult time staying asleep.) When I did wake up in the morning, I found it difficult to, well, wake up and exercise with any intensity or effort. Early morning workouts are not for me. Also, due to the sleep issues (it has gotten better!), I was once told by a sleep doctor not to work out after 6 pm.1 What’s a girlie to do?

So, right now, I work a freelance gig from 1 to 6, Monday through Thursday (on Fridays, I film for my YouTube channel). I focus on my own projects from 8:30/9ish onward. Because of this schedule, I started working out at noonish on weekdays. I do a 20 to 30-minute at-home Peloton workout, stretch, and then eat lunch before sitting back down at my desk at 1.

At first, I thought I was just squeezing in a workout when I had time, but I didn’t expect to feel fully energized to focus on my afternoon work. I’m very creative in the mornings, but I’ve always been a victim of the post-lunch afternoon crash. This mid-day burst of endorphins has changed the game for me. Combine this with a morning or evening walk, and I’m the happiest girl in the world (despite everything being stressful and terrifying).

Personal finance taught me how to handle my business finances

There’s an idea from Roots & Refuge shared that’s always stayed with me: “turn your waiting room into a classroom.” She’s talking about, like, learning to can food even if you don’t have a garden, but the sentiment can apply to so many things.

I didn’t realize I was doing it at the time, but now that I manage my own business finances, I am so glad I focused so much on personal finances before I left my job. Having a consistent income for 8+ years gave me time to learn how to budget, build sinking funds, understand retirement planning, and, with time and enough access to it, begin to regard money less emotionally.

Because I have a strong grasp on my personal budget, I was able to calculate my salary, which I pay myself every month on the 1st and 15th. Right now, I have a minimum number I need to make each month to meet my “payroll,” set aside for taxes, pay an independent contractor (just YouTube editing right now), pay monthly overhead, and start building out business runway savings.

Even though I only met my minimum goal income for 2025, when I sat down to do my 2025 bookkeeping, I was not anxious or concerned. I knew I had saved enough for taxes, and I haven’t had to break into my personal emergency fund to pay my salary.

I like consulting

I set myself up to work freelance after I quit my job because I knew my audiences weren’t large enough yet to meet my income goals. I did this somewhat begrudgingly, and while I still don’t want freelance work to be my primary source of income, I’ve enjoyed it more than I expected.

Self-employment is lonely, and I like working with other people! Especially those with different skills from mine, and whom I can learn from. I’ve found that consulting keeps me fresher and more up to date with industry skills (I’ve been working primarily in organic and paid social creative direction).

The consistency is key, too. I have it set up now as a weekly retainer with set hours, so if I work those hours, I know I will get paid. That level of consistency has been important, especially as my YouTube channel and newsletter businesses have grown more slowly than I had hoped.

Right now, freelance work has been about 93% of my income (🙃). I don’t love that ratio. I would also like to work less and spend more time on my own projects. But before, I thought this was only a stopgap; I would like to get to a place where consulting like this could be more like business “walking-around money,” rather than a necessary revenue stream. I have a valuable POV and valuable skills, and I like to use them with others.

(2) I started reading Wuthering Heights this week. If I didn’t have a gorgeous paperback copy my mom got me ages ago, I would scoop up this 1968 edition on Etsy for $20. I love the cover.

(3) My friend Chelsea is demanding a full trivet edit, but in the meantime, I hope this one can hold you over. I am on the hunt for a trivet to hold our new Hario tea kettle ($60), as I’m determined to keep this one off the stovetop and away from splattering oil. This chrome trivet set from eBay ($15 for 2) is just a little too big, but if you have ample countertop space, a permanent trivet placement might be the “hot pad” solution you’re looking for.

(4) I bought a similar blue and stainless steel watch (with a very-y2k star charm!) from this watch liquidator on eBay. The square shape ($21) is so cute!

(5) Some of my newsletter ideas verge on the absurd—“The bewitching power of a chip clip,” probably won’t see the light of day, but I went on a serious eBay/Etsy hunt for chip clips a few months ago, where I found this vintage “Kitchen Klip” ($5).

(6) I’m probably going to buy this, but first I’ll need to find a way to justify the shipping costs. One of my favorite storage boxes for less-worn jewelry is the one my beloved Marni wallet/cardholder came in. There’s an Italian shop on eBay selling designer dust boxes, and I want a few of the large Marni boxes ($12) for chic closet storage. See the vision?

(7) I’m not really into twee anymore, but daisies reignite my 2012 love affair. Love these Nicole Saldana platforms in size 7 ($109).

(8) I want a mohair and merino winter beanie, and this one ($65) is almost perfect. I don’t love the big label, though. Does anyone have strong feelings about beanies? I need something more chic than my Carhartt.

(9) I’ve been trying to start a bean journal (LOL) for a year now, and my first attempt fell flat (cahier-style and just not right). After much debate, I settled on a spiral-bound (see #12), but I’ve been eyeing some of these washi-tape rating labels ($8) to use as the hook. The shop sells labels for recipes and knit/crochet projects, too!

(10) I saw a beautiful brown and steel Seiko watch on Facebook Marketplace, of all places, and saved a handful on eBay. I love the look of the brown with the stainless steel ($91).

(11) I know my taste is getting too expensive as I’ve started to get served designer on Instagram ads. Over Christmas, I was lured into these stunning Dries Van Noten fragrances ($350), but for the bottles. I will probably have to settle for the sample pack ($80). No one does pattern mixing and color as well as Dries Van Noten.

(12) This is what I’m thinking for my bean journal: this spiral-bound notebook ($26). It should be able to handle the bulk of pasted-in labels and notes. I have my eye on a metal spiral coil ($10) to replace the plastic one on this. And yes, I’ve obviously thought about getting my own spiralling machine. Don’t encourage me.

(13) I love when you can tell a cool girl runs an Etsy shop. Lots of grungey-chic jewelry in this shop, but I’m partial to these hoop heart earrings ($12).

(14) I hadn’t heard of Brighton before I stumbled on it on TheRealReal. I like its tacky, fancy biker-chick aesthetic (maybe not intentional?), and one of their bags has been my go-to for the last few months. This one ($33) is fun!

(15) Peterson Stoop is an Amsterdam-based studio that makes shoes from shoes, and these funky patchwork-sneaker Birks are sick. Bids start at $100, size 8.

Turns out that launching a YouTube channel with no video experience and working a part-time, but rent-paying freelance job is all-consuming. I am coming out the other side, I think. I am figuring out the production system and thanking the lord I can pay someone (thank you, Matt!!!) to help me edit.

Montana Vintage

We went to Billings, my husband’s hometown, for Christmas, and I snuck away while Skylar battled a cold to pop into Montana Vintage, where I found this fabulous linen-and-cotton set for $39. I cut out the shoulder pads, but both pieces of this set are an instant favorite. I suspect I’ll be living in these pants this summer.

I’ve been wanting a slip dress, so I spent some time scouring the sleepwear rack. Didn’t find the slip dress I was looking for, but I did find this sheer nightie ($19) that I’ll layer with a slip and wear as a dress. It’s a little sexier than I’d wear for a day out, but I think with flip-flops the outfit can be de-escalated.

TRR haul

Between Montana Vintage and this TheRealReal haul, I overspent on clothes in December, so I’m attempting to take it easier in January and February.

The find that pushed me to check out my cart was these Opening Ceremony x Ugg platform slip-ons. They were a little more ($108) than I’d typically spend on a shoe like this, but a cursory search revealed other secondhand listings in the $200-$300 range. I also found this 2023 unboxing TikTok, where someone in the comments described them as “Santa core,” which I found hilarious and delightful. I love these. They fit perfectly, and it’s nice to have a platform shoe option.

The unintentional theme of this TRR haul was shoes, and I also nabbed these Prada Sport flip-flops. I love Prada, but I can’t justify its cost. Prada Sport tends to be more affordable on secondhand sites. Great flip-flops! Leather and well-made—they’ll get a lot of wear this summer.

The rest of the order was two fails. I’ve had my eye on these Ferragamo mules for months now, and they were on sale for $55. My shoe size wavers between 7 and 7.5. For slip-ons, 7’s fit perfectly, but I could barely get my foot into these guys! I would say they are more accurately a 6.5, maybe a 6. These were final sale, but let me know if you’d like to buy them off of me for like $30 or whatever! These Jonathan Simkhai pants were hilariously long (serves me right for not checking the inseam), so I’ll be returning those.

Skincare, honeys

In the dry climate of Montana, I ran out of the Versed moisturizer I’ve been using ($20, sent to me by Versed, but clearly I’ll buy this again), and my backup Cerave wasn’t cutting it. When we made it back to Billings from Red Lodge on Christmas Eve, I requested the boys drop me off at Ulta.

They didn’t have Versed at this location, so I grabbed Naturium’s Multi-Peptide Rich Cream instead ($25, a nice, very rich moisturizer, but I don’t love the tub packaging!).

I let myself wander for a bit. I ended up buying Farmacy’s Honey Milk Hydrating Essence ($34, also at Sephora). I love this product! It might just replace beloved Laneige Cream skin toner ($36) in my skincare routine.

BTW, I am loving the Krave Beauty sunscreen ($20) I purchased over Black Friday. A much cheaper option than EltaMD ($45), and the shipping-minimum lip gloss in Cherry Cola ($20) I threw into my cart has been a nice find, too. It’s sort of like a glossy Clinique Black Honey.

Misc

On Etsy, I bought a Holmes & Edwards slotted spoon ($10, but a similar one here) and a few charming snap barettes ($8).

Good and bad novels

I’ve been reading a lot! (I will recap my food-related reads over on Home Food, later this month).

On the plane yesterday, I finished Loved and Missed by Susie Boyt (Bookshop, Amazon). I’ll blame the tears on the altitude, but what a stunning novel about motherhood and loving someone with addiction. Beautiful writing!!! It made me mad that I wasted my time with other novels when I could have been reading this.

I picked Grand Rapids by Natasha Stagg (Bookshop, Amazon) for my book club—a beautiful novel about teenagehood in the early 2000s. It made me think about how much we try on friends and personas when we’re young.

Did you know the Booker Prize has a great blog with recommendations? I picked up 2011’s The Sense of An Ending by Julian Barnes (Bookshop, Amazon) from their list of short Booker-nominated novels. I was thoroughly invested in this absurd plot!

I was itching for a thriller, so I found this list of Booker-nominated thrillers. I rented Snowdrops by A.D. Miller (Amazon) from the library. I found it thoroughly entertaining and well-written, despite some key flaws (I disliked the letter-to-fiance form). I think it painted an accurate picture of a middle-aged man who doesn’t know a thing about love or integrity.

Oh, and I hated Evenings and Weekends (Bookshop, Amazon) by Oisín McKenna, but wanted to know how it ended, so I finished it. I wish I had just read the plot summary! I found it cliché and annoying! It tried to do way too much. I need to stop taking random novel recommendations from social.

It felt as if no time had passed, even though it was ten years, when Amanda came to NYC in June for the Tribeca Film Festival. She house-sat my Brooklyn apartment and watered the garden while Skylar and I were travelling. The internet can be such a wonderful thing!

Amanda is a filmmaker (see Vetiver Pictures, also on Instagram) and works in Partnerships at Letterboxd. I couldn’t think of anyone better to answer the most crucial question for the sleepy week between Christmas and New Year’s—what film should we watch?

Peppermint Soda (1977)

Set in Paris in 1963, Diane Kurys’ stylish, autobiographical film follows teenage sisters Anne and Frédérique coming of age over the course of a school year. A sincere, charming portrait of adolescent turbulence, those brief, bittersweet years of girlish fantasies and mild rebellion, where a pair of stockings can mean everything. Watch it with or without your sister, curled up on the couch.

The Store (1983)

Filmed in the four weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, legendary documentarian Frederick Wiseman observes the inner workings of the Neiman-Marcus flagship department store and corporate headquarters in Dallas, Texas. Among perfumes, furs, and other consumer goods, Wiseman lets us in on the sales meetings, advertising strategies, and personnel training methods that sustain the American luxury retail business. Chic and hypnotic.

Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969)

After returning to Los Angeles from group therapy feeling sexually liberated, couple Bob (Robert Culp) and Carol (Natalie Wood) barrage their friends, Ted (Elliot Gould) and Alice (Dylan Cannon), with unsolicited relationship advice. Set within the free love cultural shift, the jaded Hollywood of Joan Didion’s 1970 novel Play It As It Lays, this glamorous ensemble cleverly interrogates the limitations of desire, honesty and enlightenment. Almost six decades later, it’s tricky to think of another sex comedy as smart and fun. Take an edible and watch it with friends.

Big Night (1996)

Italian immigrants and brothers — perfectionist chef Primo (Tony Shalhoub) and ambitious, business-minded Secondo (Stanley Tucci) — cook up a scheme to save their authentic Italian restaurant in 1950s New Jersey. A fun nineties romp about the burden of good taste under capitalism with supporting appearances from Minnie Driver, Isabella Rossellini and Alison Janney. A delicious food movie for the whole family.

Where is the Friend’s House? (1987)

This sweet film follows a young schoolboy on a humble odyssey to return his friend’s notebook to his home in a neighbouring village. The first film in the Koker trilogy from Iranian master Abbas Kiarostami, a simple yet resonant reminder of what matters: friendship, kindness, compassion. A gentle, life-affirming palate cleanser for the beginning of a new year.

I keep a running list of items and links in my iPhone notes, and then when the day comes, sit with the idea and decide if it’s something I really need or want. Here’s what I bought (and didn’t buy!), along with a few secondhand finds from November.

Nike Killshot 2, $58 (on sale now for $51)

The Nike Killshot 2 is my favorite sneaker (I wrote about them earlier this year), and I’ve been waiting for a sale to buy them in black. Before the holiday, I checked in on them to add to my Black Friday list and spotted them in this strange red-and-lavender colorway. The color pairing doesn’t make sense? But it does?

They were already on sale for Black Friday, so I bought them, and the colors are just as oddly alluring IRL. I paid $58 (free shipping if you make a Nike account), but it looks like you can get them now for $51, or the monochromatic white (my favorite!) for $75.

I wear between 7 and 7.5 (usually go 7 for sandals and heels, and 7.5 for sneakers and boots), and I wear a 7.5 in Nike.

East Fork Everyday Bowl and thistle cups, $128 (+ $44 for shipping and tax)

I became attached to the beautiful blue Heron colorway at East Fork while putting together the Home Food home cook gift guide. I haven’t bought East Fork in years and couldn’t resist the 20% off sale, so I nabbed the Everyday Bowl in Heron, another item for a gift, and four of the thistle drinking glasses that I’ve been thinking about since literally June. Merry Christmas to me!

COS long-sleeve shirt, $33.75 ($38.85 with shipping)

I don’t buy many firsthand clothes, but since I was still thinking about the 100% organic cotton long-sleeve brown-and-white striped Cos shirt after seeing both Anna Newton and Ali Labelle share it, I decided to treat myself. I’ll report back on fit and wear! I sized up because I prefer a looser fit for long-sleeve shirts.

Promix protein and creatine powder, $93.60

First off, I’m not a lifter and have literally never drank a protein shake in my life. I do like to make an occasional protein smoothie after working out, and I really like this vanilla protein powder from Promix with just two ingredients.

I took advantage of the 20% off sale and added some creatine. I’m not usually a supplement person, but since Lukas Volger mentioned creatine on Home Food and This Plate Will Save Your Life vouches for it, I’m going to try it in my smoothies now.

Krave Beauty serum and sunscreen, $51.50 ($55.55 with tax)

I like to use skin barrier products in the winter to help with my dry skin. While doing some research, I remembered liking Krave Beauty’s Great Barrier Relief serum. Why fix what isn’t broken?

I usually stock up on Elta MD sunscreen (on sale for $36 at Dermstore), but I already have two bottles in my cabinet and am curious about finding a more affordable option, so I threw in Krave’s sunscreen as well. I liked their original formulation back in the day, so I’m happy to give this one a try. To make the shipping minimum, I grabbed the lip gloss in Cherry Cola.

Vintage Ralph Lauren Polo baseball cap, $15 ($24 with shipping)

shared an eBay Polo baseball cap in her edit on Jennifer Lawrence’s street style. Her linked cap sold out before I could get it, but I found this forest green cap on eBay and made an offer. Skylar offered to clean it for me (king shit), and I wore it out yesterday—I love it!

Vintage Atlanta Olympics tennis shorts, $33

It’s risky business writing a fashion, design, and shopping newsletter; beautiful objects end up in my cart far too often. I’m creating a vintage gift guide for next week and came across these great (Atlanta Olympics) shorts from this fun vintage outerwear Etsy shop. Is it summer yet?

I had a few other things on my sales watchlist: these Keen shoes (decided I want to try them on IRL first) and a scarf hood (not on sale, but maybe I’ll knit one? I was thinking this would be a cute way to winter-ify the Polo cap).

I’ve also been intrigued by this hydrating supplement (I know, I know!) for months and wonder if my skin would like it when I’m out in the dry west. Anyone tried it?
