I’ve stopped pretending those two people are strangers to each other. They’re both me.

I think that’s the part we don’t say out loud enough: it’s not always the obvious sins that eat at us. It’s the ones nobody can see. The ones you’ve gotten so good at hiding that you’ve almost convinced yourself they’re not that serious, because if they were, surely they’d show. Surely someone would notice. But no one notices, because you’ve built a whole life around making sure they don’t.

That’s its own kind of exhausting. Managing two accounts of yourself. The public one and the real one.

Why hidden sin feels heavier

There’s something about secret sin that carries a different weight than the sin everyone can see. When your struggle is visible, at least it’s shared. People pray for you. People check on you. There’s a strange mercy in being known, even in your worst moments.

But secret sin doesn’t get that. It just gets carried. Alone. In silence. And silence has a way of making things bigger than they are. A secret left in the dark doesn’t shrink — it grows teeth.

I think that’s partly why it’s called secret sin and not just sin. The secrecy isn’t incidental to it. The secrecy is doing something. It’s not just concealing the act, it’s convincing you that you have to keep concealing it, that exposure would be the end of something — your reputation, your ministry, the way people see you, the trust you’ve built. So you protect the secret harder than you fight the sin. And somewhere in there, the secret starts protecting itself.

The performance gets easier than the repentance

Here’s what nobody warns you about: after a while, you get good at this. Good at the double life. Good at speaking Christian fluently while something else is happening underneath. Good at leading worship on Sunday and going back to the same thing Sunday night. Good at praying for other people’s freedom while quietly certain you’ll never have your own.

And the terrifying thing is, it stops feeling like hypocrisy after a while. It just feels like normal. Like this is simply what your walk with God looks like — two rooms, one you let people into and one you don’t.

Psalm 90:8 says it plainly: “You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.” Which means the room you’ve never let anyone into, God has been in the whole time. There was never a version of you He didn’t see. The secret was only ever a secret from other people.

That should terrify me. Some days it does. But I’ve come to believe it’s actually the beginning of mercy, not the opposite of it — because it means I was never actually alone in there. I just felt alone, which is a different thing entirely.

What secrecy costs you that you don’t notice

I don’t think secret sin only costs you the sin itself. I think it costs you intimacy. You cannot be fully known by God in your prayer life while being fully hidden from Him in your practice, and I don’t mean that He doesn’t see you — He does. I mean you start relating to Him like someone who’s hiding something, because you are. Prayer gets careful. Worship gets performative in places it never used to be. You start reading scripture defensively instead of hungrily, scanning for what it says about you rather than what it says to you.

And you lose community too, even while surrounded by it. You can sit in a room full of people who love you and still be the loneliest person in it, because the version of you they love isn’t the whole version. Nobody can carry a weight for you that you’ve never let them see you holding.

That’s the real cost. Not just the sin. The isolation the sin requires to survive.

Bringing it into the light doesn’t kill you

I used to think confession would be the end of me. That if I said the thing out loud, something in me would break in a way it couldn’t recover from — the way people would look at me, the way I’d have to look at myself.

It wasn’t the end of me. It was the beginning of something. Not instant deliverance, not a switch flipped, but the first time in a long time that I wasn’t fighting alone in a room I’d locked from the inside.

James doesn’t say confess your sins and be instantly freed. He says confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. Healed, not fixed in a moment. There’s a process implied there. A slowness. But it starts with the door opening, not with the struggle ending.

I’m not saying tell everyone everything. Wisdom still matters. But tell someone. Because secrecy is the soil this thing grows best in, and very little grows the same way once it’s exposed to light.

Thank God it was never about being caught

Here’s what I keep coming back to, though. Underneath all of this — underneath the hiding, the shame, the exhausting maintenance of two versions of myself — there is a God who already knew. Who has known the whole time. Who did not wait for my confession to start loving me, and will not withdraw it now that He’s heard it.

I didn’t rescue myself by finally telling the truth. The truth just stopped me from rescuing myself in the dark, alone, badly, the way I’d been trying to for years. He was the rescue. He was always going to be the rescue. I just kept trying to fix in secret what He was only ever going to heal in the light.

That’s the part I actually want to end on, because I don’t want this to read like a piece about willpower or finally getting brave enough to confess. It’s not about my bravery. My bravery has failed me plenty of times. It’s about a God who sees the hidden room and comes in anyway. Who isn’t repelled by what’s in there. Who says bring it here instead of keep that away from Me.

So thank God. Genuinely. Not as a closing line, but as the whole point. Thank God that the secret was never really a secret to Him, and thank God that this didn’t disqualify me from His love, it revealed how far His love actually reaches — into the room I thought no one, not even Him, was allowed to see.

I’m still in process. Still learning to live with the lights on. But I’d rather be known and healing than hidden and comfortable.

There are moments in life that do not arrive with noise.

Not later. Not when everything is perfect. Not when all conditions align.

Now.

And yet, even in its “now,” it does not always announce itself loudly. It springs forth. Growth language. Organic. Gradual. Sometimes almost invisible until it becomes undeniable.

This reframes how I think about progress.

Not everything new in your life will come with fireworks. Some things will grow quietly, until one day you look back and realize that you are no longer where you used to be.

Growth That No One Sees

There is a version of growth that is easy to celebrate.

The visible kind. The milestones. The achievements people can point to and applaud.

But there is another kind of growth that is less visible, yet often more significant.

The discipline you built when no one was watching.

The decisions you made to walk away from distractions.

The internal battles you fought and won quietly.

The consistency you maintained when results were not immediate.

That kind of growth rarely trends. It is not always posted. It does not always get applause.

But it changes you.

And in many ways, it prepares you for everything else.

Today, I am not just reflecting on what has been achieved. I am reflecting on what has been formed.

Identity, Purpose, and Process

This past year carried many expressions of seasonality. There were moments of harvest, visible growth, and answered prayers. There were also seasons of pruning, waiting, and silence, where progress felt slow and clarity seemed distant. Yet none of these moments were wasted. God works just as faithfully in the unseen as He does in the celebrated.

Standing at the doorway of 2026, we do not merely step forward with goals and resolutions. We step forward with assurance. God is already present in our tomorrow. He is not surprised by what lies ahead, nor unprepared for the questions we carry into the new year.

In Isaiah 43, the Lord calls His people to release their grip on the former things. Not because the past lacked meaning, but because He is actively doing a new thing. New requires perception.
