To round out the summer, Aidan and I are headed to Nantucket with his family. I cannot wait to soak up the last bit of New England summer and enjoy some long-awaited PTO. Our plans include long beach days and lots of incredible food.

After a relaxing and refreshing two weeks in mid-coast Maine, I’ve found myself back in my shoebox NYC apartment scrolling Zillow and dreaming up how how Aidan and I could make Maine our permanent home.

Beyond the perfect weather and remarkable beauty, I love Maine because of how authentically New England it feels, striking a chord with my coastal Massachusetts roots. Maine also feels in some ways untouched, relaxed and missing the commercialization of the Hamptons and Nantucket. Truly the best summer escape. If you can make the trip some day, all my recommendations and favorites are compiled here!

STAY

• Lobsterman’s Cottage (Brunswick) - The most incredible and magical Airbnb! We’ve stayed here twice, and no other Airbnb will ever compare. The views and wildlife are breathtaking, and the owners are incredibly generous. The best feature is the working dock and waterfront, home to an active lobsterman and oyster farm.

• Cape Arundel Inn (Kennebunkport) - The coziest little inn with incredible views.

• White Barn Inn (Kennebunkport) - An Auberge property with new houseboats I’m dying to stay in.

• Hidden Pond (Kennebunkport) - A cozy, woodsy escape. Adorable cottages and the amazing restaurant Earth on-property.

• The Dunes on the Waterfront (Ogunquit) - The cutest collection of cottages. Great for a larger family trip. Beautiful interiors, and the same owners as The Claremont, which has been on my bucket list for years.

• Norumbega Inn (Camden) - Another bucket-list property! A charming, castle-like property set among the most beautiful landscaping.

• The Sparrow’s Nest (Boothbay) - I’ve had this Airbnb saved for years! It looks stunning and serene.

EAT:

• Alna Store (Alna) - Aidan’s favorite restaurant ever! We went with my parents this trip and ordered the entire menu. Every bite was beyond.

• Maine Beer Company (Freeport) - A great stop on a rainy day. State-of-the-art brewery and pizza oven. One of our favorite meals of the trip. I recommend making a reservation.

• Glidden Point Oyster Farm (Edgecomb) - A fun lunch stop. You can shuck your own oysters, plus they have a food truck with other seafood and sandwich options. The lobster roll was incredible.

• The Lost Kitchen (Freedom) - IYKYK. Erin French is remarkable. For dinner at The Lost Kitchen, you need to send a postcard and try your luck at getting selected for a reservation. Unfortunately, we were not selected this year. BUT, they offer lunch at the Little Lost Kitchen a couple of days a week. The food was definitely worth the hype and the hour-plus drive. I recommend getting in line early before they open.

• Dutchman’s (Brunswick) - Cute little bagel shop! Great for breakfast.

• Dolphin Marina & Restaurant (Harpswell) - Classic New England seafood joint with the most incredible views. It may sound odd, but the blueberry muffin is a must.

• Earth at Hidden Pond (Kennebunkport) - Great for a celebratory dinner. Delicious tasting menu and a cool atmosphere. Do not miss the donuts!

• Gooserocks Dairy (Kennebunkport) - The sweetest little ice cream place.

• Scoop Deck (Wells) - Another great ice cream shop with an impressive flavor list.

• Scales (Portland) - Fabulous dinner spot. We came here with both sets of our parents back in November, and it was a huge hit. Great cocktails, a large menu, and a fun vibe.

• Standard Baking Co. (Portland) - Touristy but worth it! Delicious pastries and bread.

• Smalls (Portland) - Fun coffee and lunch spot with a cute home store in the back. Super tiny, so expect a little wait.

• Eventide Oyster Co. (Portland) - Another touristy spot that’s worth the hype. Amazing seafood.

SHOP:

• Blanche & Mimi (Portland) - Maybe my favorite home decor store ever. The selection is amazing and better than any home store in NYC. I could spend hours in here.

• Soleil (Portland) - Cute home and kitchen store. It reminded me of Big Night in NYC.

• Widener Company (Wiscasset) - Owned by the remarkable Alexander Widener. Such a beautiful store filled with antique treasures. The attention to detail was so inspiring. We got the chance to meet Alexander, and he was such a joy in person. A Maine MUST!

• Wiscasset Antiques Mall (Wiscasset) - Reserve hours and hours for this antique mall. Great vendors and an overwhelming selection. My top antique store of the trip.

• Seacraft Vintage (Kennebunkport) - Beautiful coastal and preppy collection of antiques. Seacraft is so beautifully curated.

• Snug Harbor Farm (Kennebunkport) - The sweetest nursery with a fun home store. A great place to explore even if you’re not shopping.

• Freeport Emporium (Freeport) - Another great stop for antiques.

• L.L.Bean Flagship (Freeport) - A Maine rite of passage. L.L.Bean has an entire campus!

• Cabot Antiques (Brunswick) - Another favorite antique store! Great vendors and a flea market on the weekends.

DO & SEE:

• Popham Beach - A beautiful public sandy beach. Get there early when they open and sit on the left side to avoid the seagulls. At low tide, you can walk out to a little island, and there are fun tide pools.

• Berry picking - There are so many amazing farms in Maine and many offer U-Pick during berry season. We’ve been twice to Fairwinds Farm and picked their delicious blueberries and raspberries.

• Portland Schooner Co. - The best way to see Maine is from the water! We did this sunset sail a few years ago and had such a great time.

• Oyster Farm Tour - For oyster fans, it’s so cool to learn how oysters grow. We did one from the dock of our Airbnb with Bombazine Oysters. Glidden Point also offers tours.

• Trail Hike - The wildlife and nature in Maine are so beautiful. I recommend doing a trail hike to see all the coast has to offer. We did Giant Stairs Trail in Harpswell, which is stunning any time of day but especially at sunrise, and Devil’s Back Trail, which is a short trail on Orr’s Island. Sometimes you can see seals at low tide!

• Explore Coastal Towns - There are so many cute seaside towns to explore all along the Maine coast. Some of our favorites are Kennebunkport, Ogunquit, Bailey’s Island, Orr’s Island, Boothbay, and Camden.
