In 2022, Ukrainian defence company Cascade Systems began developing an electronic warfare system that would later become known as Lima.

The company describes the origins of the project in straightforward terms: conventional air defence was becoming increasingly expensive, interceptor stocks were limited, and the number of incoming threats continued to grow.

According to Cascade Systems, more than $2 million was invested in the project before government contracts appeared.

Over the next several years, Lima evolved from a tactical electronic countermeasure into what its developer now presents as a component of strategic air defence. This evolution highlights a broader trend: electronic warfare is gradually moving beyond a supporting capability to become a distinct layer of air defence.

When Kyiv Suddenly Appears in Peru

One of the easiest ways to understand the basic idea behind Lima is already familiar to many people in Kyiv.

During air-raid alerts, GPS sometimes begins behaving strangely. Smartphones lose their correct location, navigation apps become unreliable, and someone trying to order an Uklon ride (Ukraine’s equivalent of Uber) or Bolt may suddenly discover that their phone believes they are in Lima, Peru.

For an ordinary user, this is an annoying side effect.

Behind it, however, is a serious technology: GNSS spoofing, the manipulation of satellite-navigation data.

Traditional electronic jamming interferes with a navigation receiver’s ability to obtain a usable satellite signal.

Spoofing works differently. The receiver continues operating, but false navigation data causes it to calculate an incorrect position.

For a smartphone, the result may simply be a misplaced GPS pin.

For a drone or guided weapon, false coordinates can mean a navigation error, reduced accuracy, or deviation from the intended target.

The information used by a weapon to understand where it is has itself become part of the battlefield.

From a Project to a Strategic System

As Lima developed, its capabilities began attracting attention outside Ukraine.

During 2025, a number of major international publications began documenting the growing effectiveness of Ukrainian electronic warfare technologies.

The Economist reported on Lima in the context of disrupting Russian glide bombs. Later, Forbes described the use of spoofing against Russian Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, citing Ukraine’s Night Watch unit, which operates the system.

Cascade Systems also publishes its own operational figures for Lima against Shahed drones, cruise missiles and aeroballistic missiles.

These reports rely in part on data provided by the developer and the units operating the system, so the numbers should be treated accordingly. But the broader development is more important than any single figure.

Lima is increasingly being presented as more than a local countermeasure against one type of weapon. It is becoming part of a wider air-defence architecture.

The Electronic Layer

Traditional air defence revolves around physical interception.

A radar detects a threat. The system identifies its type and trajectory. A decision is then made on whether to engage it.

Against the most difficult targets, that may require an interceptor costing hundreds of thousands—or even millions—of dollars.

Lima introduces an additional step:

detection → electronic disruption → trajectory assessment → physical interception if necessary

If a weapon’s guidance has already been disrupted and it no longer threatens the protected target, an expensive interceptor can potentially be preserved for something else.

That is why directly comparing Lima with Patriot misses the point.

They perform different functions within the same architecture.

Patriot remains a system for physically destroying the most dangerous threats. Lima can potentially reduce the burden on that final and most expensive defensive layer.

The Economics of a Mass Attack

Modern air defence faces a fundamental economic problem:

the number of attacking systems can grow faster than the production of interceptors.

That is already happening in Ukraine.

The shortage of air-defence missiles is no longer an abstract problem of military logistics. Its consequences are felt directly in Ukrainian cities.

When too few interceptors are available, the probability rises that another missile or drone will reach an apartment building, power facility, factory or other critical infrastructure.

For Ukrainians, this mathematics has very real—and often catastrophic—consequences.

Russia can combine large waves of drones with cruise and ballistic missiles, forcing Ukraine to distribute a limited stock of air-defence weapons across a growing number of targets.

Sophisticated interceptors cannot be replenished quickly. Their production depends on specialised factories, complex components, resilient supply chains and time.

So the question is changing.

It used to be:

Can we shoot this missile down?

Increasingly, another question matters just as much:

How much does it cost to prevent that missile from completing its mission?

This is where the electronic layer becomes especially important.

A deployed EW system can potentially disrupt multiple threats within its coverage area without requiring a new physical munition for every engagement.

Electronic defence is not free. It requires hardware, power, maintenance, trained personnel, communications infrastructure, software and continuous upgrades.

But its cost structure is fundamentally different from one in which every interception consumes another expensive missile.

In a war of attrition, that difference in cost structure can become strategic.

The Limits

Lima is not a universal answer to every aerial threat.

Modern missiles and drones rarely rely on a single source of navigation. Alongside satellite correction, they may use inertial navigation, protected antenna arrays and other methods of determining position.

Russia is continuously upgrading these technologies.

Any advantage in electronic warfare is temporary by nature. A new spoofing technique emerges; the adversary improves its navigation protection; EW developers adapt their algorithms—and the cycle begins again.

That makes electronic warfare fundamentally different from a capability defined mostly by fixed specifications such as range or warhead weight.

Its effectiveness depends partly on how quickly the system can evolve.

A Weapon That Gets Updates

Traditionally, air-defence development was associated mainly with physical characteristics.

Radar range. Missile speed. Interception altitude. Engine performance.

Today, another parameter is becoming increasingly important:

the speed at which the system can be updated.

How quickly can an engineering team adapt after a new anti-jamming antenna appears?

How quickly can methods of generating deceptive navigation signals be changed?

How quickly can a new software version reach operational units?

The resulting engineering cycle increasingly resembles the development of a digital product.

A new version appears. The adversary develops a countermeasure. Another update follows.

Technological advantage therefore depends less exclusively on the price of the hardware.

Sometimes it depends on the speed of the engineering team behind it.

A New Logic of Air Defence

Ultimately, the story of Lima goes far beyond one Ukrainian EW system.

The war in Ukraine is exposing the limits of an air-defence architecture in which the primary answer to every incoming threat is physical destruction.

With a small number of targets, that model works. Under mass attack, it becomes a contest of resources.

Air defence is therefore becoming increasingly layered.

Some threats lose accuracy through electronic warfare. Others are intercepted by cheaper systems. Some become the responsibility of mobile teams or medium-range air defence. The most dangerous threats are left to the expensive missile-defence layer.

That also changes how effectiveness should be measured.

The number of destroyed targets still matters.

But another metric is becoming increasingly important:

At what cost did the defence prevent the attacker from achieving its objective?

That is the context in which Lima matters.

It does not make Patriot unnecessary, and it does not eliminate the need for physical interception. Its real capabilities will continue to evolve alongside the technologies used by the adversary.

But the concept points toward a broader direction in air defence: one layer detects the threat, another interferes with its navigation, another uses a cheaper interceptor, while the most expensive weapons are reserved for situations where nothing else will do.

In such an architecture, air defence becomes more than a collection of individual systems.

It becomes a system for managing both the cost and the probability of a successful strike.

And that may be why the story of Lima ultimately becomes more important than Lima itself.

In late June 2026, Volodymyr Zelensky outlined a new period of pressure on Russia. Public messaging included the phrase “long-range sanctions,” but no specific list of future targets was disclosed.

The following forty days should therefore not be assessed as the execution of a previously revealed plan. It is more accurate to view them as a distinct phase of Ukraine’s strike campaign — a period during which pressure spread across different elements of Russia’s rear.

During this time, strikes affected oil infrastructure, military facilities, occupied Crimea, shipping in the Sea of Azov, and major distribution warehouses inside Russia.

This does not necessarily mean that every attack was directed as part of a single unified plan. There is not enough public evidence to support such a conclusion. Taken together, however, the strikes formed a visible trend: the war was moving deeper into the systems that sustain the Russian front and support the country’s domestic war economy.

The central question of these forty days is not how many targets were hit.

Was Ukraine able to turn long-range strikes into sustained pressure and at least partially seize the initiative beyond the front line?

Forty Days Without a Public Target List

Ukraine’s long-range campaign did not begin from zero. By the summer of 2026, strikes on Russian oil refineries, fuel depots, airfields, and other military facilities had already become a regular feature of the war.

The forty-day period was a continuation and expansion of that logic.

Instead of publishing a specific list of targets, Ukraine established a broader framework: increase the cost of the war for Russia, move the threat deeper into its rear, and force the adversary to defend a growing number of sites simultaneously.

The lack of specificity created uncertainty. The next strike could target an oil refinery, a military facility, a maritime route, an installation in Crimea, or a major distribution hub inside Russia.

Uncertainty over the direction of the next attack became one of the defining features of this period.

From Oil Infrastructure to Maritime Logistics

At the beginning of the campaign, Russia’s oil system remained the main symbol of Ukrainian long-range pressure.

Strikes on refineries, fuel depots, and terminals caused fires, interrupted individual production processes, triggered repair work, and forced the redistribution of fuel flows. Russia, in turn, strengthened the protection of critical facilities and adjusted its logistics.

Strikes on oil infrastructure did not stop or lose their relevance. At the same time, however, Ukrainian operations expanded to other parts of the Russian system.

One of the most visible new directions was shipping in the Sea of Azov. As part of Operation MoLoChKa, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces targeted vessels linked to Russian maritime logistics: tankers, bulk carriers, tugboats, ferries, and other auxiliary ships.

The objective was no longer limited to damaging an individual hull. It also involved reducing the throughput of the entire transport system.

A vessel does not have to be sunk to be temporarily removed from a logistics chain. Damage to its control systems, the need for repairs, a return to port, or towing can all reduce the effectiveness of a route.

This was an attempt to make the entire maritime area more dangerous — an area Russia had regarded as a relatively protected internal supply route.

Without a traditional fleet in the Sea of Azov, Ukraine attempted to establish a different form of control: control through persistent threat.

Crimea as Part of an Integrated Logistics System

Pressure on shipping was connected to the broader contest over occupied Crimea.

Russia supplies the peninsula through the Kerch Bridge, maritime routes, the land corridor, and infrastructure across the occupied territories. Fully isolating Crimea with drones alone is therefore impossible.

But the existence of a route does not mean that logistics are functioning efficiently. Effective supply depends on regularity, predictability, and the ability to redistribute cargo quickly.

Strikes on vessels, energy infrastructure, warehouses, airfields, and other facilities did not stop supplies to Crimea, but they created additional pressure points. The more parts of the system require protection and repair, the higher the cost of keeping it operational.

The result of the forty-day period should therefore not be measured by asking whether the peninsula was completely cut off.

A more useful question is:

Did supplying Crimea become more difficult, more expensive, and less predictable?

Judging by the combined pattern of events, pressure on the system increased. Russia nevertheless preserved its main routes and its ability to redistribute traffic between them. The result was greater logistical friction, not paralysis.

Wildberries: Expanding the Space of War

One of the most unexpected directions was the series of strikes on warehouses operated by Wildberries, Russia’s largest e-commerce platform.

Such facilities are very different from refineries, airfields, or port infrastructure. They belong to the civilian distribution economy, while also potentially being used to store and transport dual-use goods.

The military relevance of each individual facility must be established separately. But the series of strikes itself demonstrates an expansion of the campaign’s scope.

Major distribution hubs connecting warehouses, transport networks, suppliers, and consumers were now exposed to risk. Damage to such a facility creates consequences beyond the building itself: goods must be redirected, deliveries are delayed, and additional pressure is placed on other parts of the network.

Even when a particular warehouse is not an exclusively military site, a strike on a major logistics hub may indicate an attempt to move the economic cost of the war deeper into Russia’s domestic economy.

At the same time, this makes such attacks the most controversial element of the campaign. The more closely a site is connected to the civilian market, the stronger the evidence must be for its role in Russian military logistics.

What Was Achieved

The principal result of the forty days was a visible expansion of the war into Russia’s rear.

Not only did the geography of attacks grow, but so did the range of targets: from oil and military infrastructure to shipping and major distribution hubs.

This forced Russia to address several different challenges at the same time:

• protecting oil-processing facilities;

• securing maritime routes;

• maintaining reliable supplies to Crimea;

• reinforcing military installations;

• accounting for threats to major logistics centres inside the country.

Taken together, these attacks created an effect of shifting pressure. Strengthening the defence of one sector did not remove the threat to other parts of the system.

Ukraine partially gained the initiative in choosing the geography and character of its strikes. Russia more often found itself reacting, redistributing resources, and attempting to close newly exposed vulnerabilities.

This was not a strategic breakthrough, but it was a real operational result.

The level of escalation also increased. The war became more visible to regions and sectors that had previously been far from the front line and were regarded as relatively safe.

What Was Not Achieved

The forty days did not change the overall course of the war.

Russia retained its offensive capabilities at the front, its main logistics routes, the functioning of its oil system as a whole, and its ability to supply the occupied territories.

Damaged facilities were repaired. Transport flows were redirected. Defences adapted. The strikes created costs, disruption, and additional pressure, but they did not paralyse the Russian war machine.

Nor was there a visible fundamental shift on the battlefield. There is currently no basis for claiming that the effects of the campaign forced the Kremlin to reconsider its strategy or cast serious doubt on Russia’s ability to continue the war.

This is where the line lies between successful asymmetric pressure and a strategic result.

Ukraine increased the cost of the war and expanded the territory exposed to risk. But it has not yet converted those costs into an effect capable of changing the overall balance of forces.

The Main Conclusion

Ukraine did not seize the strategic initiative.

But it did impose forty days of shifting pressure on Russia’s deep rear.

The importance of this period was not limited to the number of targets hit. It lay in the expansion of the threat across multiple categories: oil infrastructure, maritime logistics, Crimea, military facilities, and major distribution hubs.

It remains publicly unclear to what extent all these operations were elements of a single centralised campaign. Their combined effect, however, was evident: Russia was forced to defend more systems, across a wider territory, against different types of threats.

These forty days did not become a turning point.

They became a demonstration of a method — sustained and asymmetric pressure on the systems that supply the front and support Russia’s war economy.

The central question is no longer how many targets have already been hit.

It is whether Ukraine can maintain this pressure longer than Russia can continue adapting.

Fedorov became a prominent figure long before his name became the focal point of the current defense policy crisis. Since 2019, he had led the Ministry of Digital Transformation — an institution that was effectively built from scratch. The ministry did not carry the heavy legacy of older government bodies, bureaucratic layers, internal clans, or the familiar logic of “this is how it has always worked.” That created space for a different model of management.

Millions of Ukrainians saw the result. Diia, Mriia, digital documents, public services in a smartphone — all of this gradually became part of everyday life. For many people, it was their first experience of a state that works quickly, clearly, and without humiliating the individual before the system.

That is why Fedorov became politically significant. Behind him stood not only a title, but a clear record: he built a system whose results people could personally verify.

After the full-scale invasion, that experience took on a different meaning. Digitalization stopped being merely a convenient service. The war made speed, data, technology, drones, production, and the connection between the front line and the state matters of survival.

Fedorov approached the Ministry of Defense with the mindset of a CEO responsible for a vast organization: a huge budget, major resources, and strict accountability for results. His main task was to shape a strategy for a new type of war and implement it: through drones, Defence Tech, long-range strikes, technological pressure on the Russian rear, and limiting the enemy’s capabilities, including decisions such as disabling Starlink for Russian forces.

And here, two of his statements matter.

The first was about the title itself:

 “I don’t need the title of defense minister for the sake of the title. I need it to win the war.”

For Ukrainian politics, this is a powerful formula. A high office here does not sound like status, a reward, or a bureaucratic asset. It sounds like an instrument for achieving a goal.

The second statement was about strategy.

“Show me your strategy for fighting the enemy and explain how you are going to implement it.”

This question struck a nerve because Ukrainian politics often acts situationally. But a war of this scale requires more than a reaction to the next crisis. It requires a clear line: how Ukraine will fight with limited resources, above all limited human resources.

This is where the real meaning of the protests lies.

People did not take to the streets simply for one leader. They came out for the direction they associate with Fedorov: speed, technology, Defence Tech, drones, long-range strikes, digital systems, and the attempt to fight smarter.

Ukrainian society increasingly feels the cost of slowness. When the state acts too slowly, that institutional weakness is paid for by the people at the front. When decisions arrive late, when technologies are not scaled, when bureaucracy slows down working approaches, the consequences are not measured in ratings or political statements.

They are measured in lives.

That is why support for Fedorov became so broad. For many people, he became a symbol of a state capable of learning faster, making decisions faster, and seeking a technological answer where the old approach demands more and more human lives.

This does not make him a perfect politician. There can be questions for him, as there can be for anyone in power. But during war, society evaluates more than mistakes. It evaluates the direction of movement.

Fedorov became an important figure because, for many Ukrainians, he showed that the state can work differently.

First, this was visible in digital services.

Then, in the logic of defense.

That is why his possible dismissal caused such an immediate reaction across Ukraine. People did not see an ordinary personnel reshuffle. They saw the risk of losing momentum in a field where momentum has become part of the war.

In modern war, the fundamental question is simple: how can a country with limited human resources resist a significantly larger enemy?

The answer cannot be built only on mobilization, heroism, and endurance.

It must be built on strategy, technology, speed of decision-making, and the state’s ability to turn ideas into working systems.

Mykhailo Fedorov became a symbol of exactly this approach.

And that is why thousands of people came out for his return.

Not because data automatically wins wars. It does not. Data is useless if it cannot be collected, protected, structured, verified, and turned into decisions.

But without real battlefield data, military AI risks remaining a laboratory technology.

A simulation shows how a system is supposed to work.

War shows how it behaves when everything goes wrong.

Simulation vs. Reality

A proving ground is a controlled environment. The target is known. The conditions are defined. The scenario is planned in advance.

War works differently.

On the real battlefield, hardware and software lose the sterile comfort of the laboratory. Communication is unstable, the enemy actively counters, the operator makes mistakes, and the situation changes faster than the model can be updated.

That is why battlefield data is valuable not because it is clean.

It is valuable because it is real.

Military AI should not learn only from ideal scenarios. It must learn from an environment where systems constantly face interference, uncertainty, and error.

A model may look impressive in a demonstration, but war quickly shows where the presentation ends and reality begins.

Real war quickly separates working technology from beautiful theory.

That is what combat validation means.

Ukraine and Combat Validation

Ukraine does not have a monopoly on military AI.

But Ukraine has something most armies and defense companies do not have at this scale: a large body of experience from modern technological warfare, accumulated not in simulations, but under real pressure.

This is a practical resource.

The next generation of military AI will be shaped not only by model size and computing power. It will be shaped by real failures, errors, and battlefield edge cases — the moments when a system faces not an ideal scenario, but real war.

That is where it becomes clear whether a technology can work not in a demonstration, but in combat.

Data Is Not Enough

There is an important trap in this discussion.

It is easy to say that Ukraine has accumulated data.

But data alone is not a strategy.

If battlefield experience remains scattered across units, operators, companies, videos, reports, and isolated conclusions, it remains fragmented. Valuable, but limited.

The real question is whether this experience can be turned into a system.

A system that protects sensitive information, extracts useful patterns from the chaos of war, helps train military AI without exposing classified data, and gives engineers honest feedback from the front line.

Only then does battlefield data become a strategic asset.

Otherwise, it remains an archive.

A Pragmatic Exchange of Value

Recent discussions between Ukraine and its partners around the Drone Deal, defense startups, modern warfare technologies, and the exchange of battlefield experience point to a broader shift.

This is no longer only the classic aid model, where allies provide Ukraine with money, weapons, components, and political support.

That support remains critically important. Without it, a war of this intensity cannot be sustained for long.

But the relationship is gradually becoming more complex.

Partners give Ukraine scale.

Ukraine gives partners reality.

This is not about selling secrets or transferring raw operational data. That would be dangerous and strategically irresponsible.

Rather, it centers on controlled exchange: structured conclusions, cleaned datasets, test results, battlefield feedback, and practical knowledge about how technologies behave under real combat conditions.

This is where military cooperation begins to look less like charity and more like a pragmatic exchange of value.

A New Layer of Defense Infrastructure

Military AI will not be created only in laboratories.

It will be created through contact with reality.

This does not mean that every dataset should be transferred, every lesson opened, or every battlefield signal made available to partners. Security matters. Ethics matter. Control matters.

But it does mean that the advantage will belong to the countries and companies that learn faster from real war.

Modern defense technology is no longer only about producing more hardware. It is also about shortening the cycle between battlefield experience, data, engineering decisions, and new systems.

Ukraine is already inside this cycle.

The question is whether it can organize this experience well enough to turn it into a long-term defense capability.

First of all, for Ukraine itself.

Instead of a Conclusion

The next military advantage may belong not only to those who build more drones, larger AI models, or more expensive weapons systems.

It may belong to those who learn faster from real war.

Battlefield data is not a magic resource. It does not replace industry, logistics, air defense, training, or command.

But without it, military AI remains too clean, too theoretical, and too far from the environment where it will actually have to work.

And real war breaks beautiful theories very quickly.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has approved a 40-day shaping operation by Ukraine’s Security Service, aimed at pushing Russia toward ending the war.

At first glance, this may sound like another political statement in wartime.

But against the backdrop of recent events around Crimea, it looks like part of a much deeper logic.

Strikes on energy infrastructure, power disruptions in Sevastopol, fuel shortages, long queues near the Crimean Bridge, and reports of hits on radar stations, air defense assets, and logistical infrastructure should not be seen as isolated episodes.

Taken together, they point to a different model of pressure.

Ukraine is not necessarily trying to solve the Crimea question through a direct assault.

It is gradually working against the peninsula’s ability to perform its military function.

Territory as a Function

We are used to looking at war through maps.

Who controls a city.

Where the front line runs.

How many kilometers one side has advanced.

But modern war increasingly shows something else:

Territory does not matter in and of itself.

Territory matters only as long as it performs a function.

In Russia’s military system, Crimea is not just a peninsula.

It is airfields, ports, depots, roads, railway hubs, the Crimean Bridge, ferry routes, air defense systems, coastal radar stations, fuel, electricity, communications, and logistics.

As long as these elements work together, Crimea remains a military platform.

When they begin to fail, the peninsula slowly turns from a platform into a burden.

The flag may remain in place.

The map may not change.

But the military value of the territory begins to decline.

This is the key shift:

Control over territory no longer automatically means control over its function.

A Fortress That Needs Supply

For years, Russian propaganda presented Crimea as a fortress.

A military base.

A symbol.

A bridgehead.

An unsinkable aircraft carrier.

But every fortress has one weak point:

It has to be supplied.

Crimea depends on a limited number of routes: the bridge, ports, ferries, railways, fuel, electricity, and the ability to move people, equipment, ammunition, and civilian goods on a regular basis.

Geographically, Crimea is a peninsula.

But in military logic, it increasingly behaves like an island.

If the bridge is overloaded, fuel becomes a problem, electricity becomes unstable, transport is disrupted, and civilian infrastructure starts to slow down, this does not necessarily mean an immediate military collapse.

But it does mean the cost of holding Crimea is rising.

The system begins to spend more resources not on using Crimea as a base, but on keeping Crimea functioning.

Crimea stops being only an asset.

It begins to turn into a logistical liability.

Striking the Function, Not the Target

News usually talks about physical targets.

A substation was hit.

A fuel depot was attacked.

A bridge was damaged.

A radar station was destroyed.

Air defenses engaged.

Power disruptions began.

But in modern war, the physical object is not the only thing that matters.

What matters is the function it performs.

A radar station is not just an antenna. It is part of the visibility system.

An air defense launcher is not just a weapon. It is part of the protective umbrella over airfields, depots, command points, energy nodes, and supply routes.

An electrical substation is not just an energy facility. It supports communications, transport, repair sites, storage facilities, and the stability of the rear.

Fuel is not just gasoline. It is military mobility: trucks, generators, evacuation, supply, repairs, troop movement, and operational tempo.

When drones hit these elements, they are not only striking physical targets.

They are striking the connections inside the system.

That is why strikes around Crimea should not be viewed only as symbolic attacks.

Their purpose is not necessarily to change the map with a single strike.

Their purpose is to gradually reduce Russia’s ability to use Crimea as a stable military platform.

Drones as an Instrument of Isolation

Crimea cannot be fully “cut off” by drones alone in the literal sense.

But drones can make its supply more expensive, more complicated, more unstable, and more unpredictable.

This is no longer just an attack.

It is a form of gradual isolation.

Not a classical naval blockade.

Not a land encirclement.

But technological pressure on the nodes that allow a territory to perform its military role.

In this logic, a drone is not just an aircraft with a warhead.

It is an element of a pressure system.

That is why the announcement of a 40-day SBU operation matters not only as a political signal.

It reflects a new normal of war:

Russia’s rear is no longer a safe space.

And Crimea is no longer a quiet military platform.

The War for the Ability to Continue the War

Crimea today shows one of the main principles of modern technological war.

War is no longer only about territory.

War is about the ability of territory to perform a military function.

Russia may still control Crimea on the map.

But if supply becomes harder, fuel becomes scarce, energy becomes unstable, air defense becomes overloaded, and logistics become more expensive, then the military value of that territory begins to change.

Crimea does not disappear as a factor.

But its role begins to transform.

From a convenient military platform, it can gradually become a system that must be constantly protected, supplied, repaired, and held under pressure.

That is the logic of a logistical island.

A peninsula does not have to be stormed directly in order to change its meaning in the war.

It is enough to gradually reduce its ability to function as a base, a depot, a bridge, an airfield, a port, and a supply hub.

The battlefield no longer ends at the front line.

It runs through the places where the enemy stores fuel, repairs equipment, turns on radars, moves trucks, launches trains, distributes electricity, and tries to maintain the rhythm of war.

And if drones can disrupt that rhythm, they change more than tactics.

They change the geography of war.

Today, the situation is beginning to change.

But ultimately, the result was a single, coordinated operation.

If this trend continues, we may be witnessing a transition from individual platforms to more complex combined operations.

Another point is equally interesting.

Perhaps the main change is not the appearance of new drones.

But the fact that Ukraine is gradually moving from individual platforms to the systematic use of many different solutions simultaneously.

Different characteristics.

Different manufacturers.

Different approaches.

One operation.

The Illusion of an Impenetrable Sky

For a long time, Moscow was perceived as one of the most heavily protected areas in Russia.

However, recent events have highlighted an important reality.

The number of air defense systems and resilience against complex mass attacks are not always the same thing.

If we simplify it as much as possible, Delta is an integrated battlefield awareness system.

Its purpose is to collect information from multiple sources and provide commanders with the most complete picture possible on a single screen.

The platform aggregates data from satellites, military and commercial drones, radar systems, electronic intelligence assets, radio intercepts, reconnaissance reports, and even verified civilian reports submitted through Ukraine's "eVorog" chatbot.

All of this information is displayed on a unified digital map in real time.

At first glance, that may not sound particularly revolutionary.

Just another map.

Just another military software platform.

But the deeper you dig into the subject, the clearer it becomes that Delta was never built for presentations or to impress foreign delegations.

It was built because the old system could no longer keep up with the speed of modern warfare.

How Did Delta Come Into Existence?

The story of Delta did not begin inside government offices or defense procurement programs.

It began on the battlefield.

In the summer of 2014, a group of volunteers and activists created Aerorozvidka, an initiative focused on using civilian drones for reconnaissance and artillery adjustment.

According to those involved, the idea emerged from a simple realization:

Ukrainian soldiers were often fighting blind.

They needed eyes.

But it quickly became obvious that eyes without a nervous system were not enough.

Seeing a target is only half the battle.

The information must reach those who can act on it.

The Soviet-style command structure inherited by Ukraine relied on a rigid vertical hierarchy.

A scout spotted a target.

The information moved upward.

Headquarters analyzed it.

Orders moved back down.

On paper, the process looked logical.

In reality, hours could pass between detecting a target and responding to it.

Sometimes much longer.

For modern warfare, that delay is unacceptable.

That was the environment in which the idea of a real-time battlefield awareness platform began to take shape.

The first version of Delta appeared on the front line in 2016.

Interestingly, it was developed more like a startup product than a traditional military program.

A new feature.

Testing in combat conditions.

Feedback from users.

Improvements.

Another release.

Then repeat.

In many ways, Delta followed a true bottom-up approach — from the problems faced by soldiers directly to software code.

This stands in sharp contrast to another Ukrainian military command system, Dzvin ("Bell"), which was developed through traditional government procurement processes and consumed hundreds of millions of hryvnias.

In the end, it was Delta that proved itself under real battlefield conditions.

Another important detail is often overlooked.

From the beginning, Delta was designed with NATO interoperability standards in mind.

Over time, it successfully passed multiple interoperability tests and exercises, allowing Ukrainian developers not only to adopt NATO standards but also to contribute battlefield experience back into the conversation.

How Does Delta Work in Practice?

Imagine a fairly typical battlefield scenario.

A reconnaissance drone identifies concealed enemy equipment.

Instead of searching for radio frequencies and relaying coordinates through multiple layers of command, the operator simply marks the target on the map.

The information becomes available almost instantly to authorized users in that operational sector.

An artillery commander sees the target.

Determines it is within range.

Makes a decision.

The strike follows.

Afterward, battle damage assessment data is fed back into the system.

The loop closes.

According to developers and Ukrainian defense officials, systems like Delta can reduce the time between target detection and engagement from many hours to just a few minutes.

Some public estimates mention roughly two minutes under ideal conditions.

Whether that figure applies universally is another question.

But the trend itself is undeniable.

The true value of Delta is speed.

Today, enormous volumes of information flow through the platform.

According to the Ministry of Defense, more than one million enemy objects are added to the system every month.

No human being can manually process that volume of data.

That is why Delta's primary mission is not simply collecting information.

Its mission is turning information chaos into battlefield understanding.

One developer once compared Delta to Twitter for the military.

Units can subscribe to relevant information streams and receive updates in real time.

The difference is that instead of memes, politics, and celebrity news, the feed contains target coordinates, reconnaissance reports, and battlefield updates.

Why Is Delta Constantly Compared to Palantir?

This is probably one of the most common questions.

In my view, the comparison is both accurate and misleading at the same time.

Accurate because both systems deal with enormous amounts of data.

Misleading because they operate at different levels.

If we oversimplify:

Delta answers the question:

What is happening right now, and where should we act?

Palantir answers the question:

What do all these data points mean, and what is likely to happen next?

Delta operates in real time.

It supports immediate tactical decision-making.

Palantir is far stronger in long-term analysis, pattern recognition, logistics assessment, and strategic forecasting.

That is why the question "Delta or Palantir?" is somewhat flawed.

They are not necessarily competitors.

In many situations, they complement one another.

Using a rough analogy:

Delta is closer to a live operational map and battlefield chat.

Palantir is closer to a large-scale analytical center.

What Does Delta Give the Military Today?

Over the years, Delta has evolved far beyond a single application.

Today, it resembles an entire ecosystem.

Several specialized modules now operate within that ecosystem.

Mission Control

A planning and coordination tool for drone operations.

According to the Ministry of Defense, hundreds of units use it daily to coordinate hundreds of drone missions.

Vezha

A platform for processing video feeds and reconnaissance data.

It enables military personnel to analyze thousands of intelligence objects and collaborate within a secure environment.

AVENGERS

An AI-enabled module designed to automatically recognize military equipment in images and video streams.

There is another important detail.

Shortly before the full-scale invasion, Delta's infrastructure was migrated to cloud environments outside Ukraine.

That decision significantly increased resilience against missile strikes targeting physical data centers and critical infrastructure.

In hindsight, it was an extremely important move.

Where Are the Weaknesses?

No serious system is without limitations.

Delta is no exception.

Dependence on Connectivity

The system depends on data transmission.

Without communication networks, Delta's capabilities decline significantly.

Electronic warfare remains one of the greatest threats to any network-centric architecture.

Information Overload

When thousands of objects, video feeds, and notifications appear simultaneously on a commander's screen, another problem emerges.

Not a lack of information.

Too much information.

Sometimes identifying what matters becomes harder than collecting the information itself.

Cyber Threats

Russian actors have repeatedly attempted to gain access to the system.

The most well-known incidents were not direct breaches of Delta's architecture but phishing attacks against individual users.

It serves as another reminder of an old truth:

The weakest point in any digital system is usually the human being using it.

At the same time, Delta's ability to adapt and evolve in response to such threats is precisely what separates a living combat platform from a bureaucratic software project.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence

This is probably where the next chapter begins.

The amount of data generated on modern battlefields is growing faster than the number of people capable of analyzing it.

Thousands of hours of video.

Hundreds of drones.

Millions of objects.

No military can hire enough analysts to manually watch everything.

This is where computer vision and AI become increasingly important.

The interesting part is that AI is not replacing humans.

At least not yet.

Instead, it acts as a filter.

A neural network can identify a tank silhouette.

Highlight unusual movement.

Flag objects that deserve attention.

But the final decision still belongs to a human operator.

For now.

That is why the future of systems like Delta probably lies not in autonomous warfare but in collaboration between humans and algorithms.

Algorithms help people see faster.

Humans make the decisions.

My Conclusions

When I started researching Delta, I assumed I was looking at another digital map.

After spending time studying the system, my perspective changed.

Delta is not interesting because it is perfect.

And it certainly is not free from vulnerabilities.

It is interesting because it represents a precedent.

One of the first large-scale attempts to build a digital military operating architecture during an active, high-intensity war.

In just a few years, the project evolved from a volunteer initiative into a platform used across much of Ukraine's defense ecosystem.

Yet the most interesting aspect is not the code.

And not the interface.

The most interesting aspect is the shift in thinking.

The transition from a model where information slowly moves through layers of bureaucracy to one where information moves almost instantly.

When I began writing this article, I thought this was a story about a map.

Now I think it is a story about time.

Perhaps the most important weapon of the 21st century is no longer a tank, a missile, or even a drone.

Perhaps the most important weapon is the ability to understand a situation faster and make decisions faster than your opponent.

Viewed through that lens, it becomes easier to understand why military organizations around the world are paying such close attention to Delta.

But if we look beyond the headlines — strictly at the numbers — a much darker reality appears.

Drone attacks are breaking records.

The intensity of strikes is expanding.

The technological race is accelerating.

The war is not shrinking.

It is scaling.

The Anatomy of Pre-Negotiation Escalation

This structural deadlock was described in detail by The Washington Post in its June 2, 2026 analysis, “Pressure rises on Putin as Russia’s war aims are seen as unattainable.”

The article emphasizes that the Kremlin’s offensive is stalling amid growing economic strain, manpower shortages, and the destructive impact of Ukrainian long-range strikes on Russian logistics.

But this reveals a deeper paradox.

Why does war reach such a high level of intensity precisely when there is growing consensus that its long-term sustainability is weakening?

The history of major conflicts shows a harsh pattern.

The most destructive phases rarely happen only at the beginning of a war.

And not always in the middle.

Very often, they occur when both sides begin to recognize the possible proximity of an endgame.

When negotiations appear on the horizon, escalation stops being purely a military strategy.

It becomes a bargaining tool.

Every strike.

Every attempted advance.

Every destroyed depot.

Every attack on logistics.

Each one is an effort to rewrite the terms of a future agreement before they are fixed on paper.

The War of Pressure

What we are witnessing in 2026 increasingly looks like a transition from a war of attrition to a war of pressure.

The goal is no longer simply to hold territory.

The goal is to impose costs on the opponent — costs that pressure its economy, logistics, military, infrastructure, and society.

This is no longer only a fight over the front line.

It is a fight over the resilience of systems.

This shift is most visible in the air.

The swarm factor: where drone raids once consisted of dozens of aircraft, they now involve hundreds.

The technology curve: cheap autonomous technologies have made deep strikes easily scalable for the attacker and extremely costly for the classical air defense architecture.

The central paradox: while politicians discuss possible peace frameworks in safe offices, engineers in factories continue to scale the production of tools of destruction.

Modern war does not necessarily slow down as resources become exhausted.

Sometimes the opposite happens.

Mass drone production, automated reconnaissance, elements of artificial intelligence, and cheap strike systems allow a high operational tempo to continue even when traditional armies begin to face shortages of manpower, equipment, and time.

This is why war is becoming less linear.

It no longer moves only according to the logic of offense and defense.

It moves according to the logic of pressure.

Pressure on the economy.

Pressure on the rear.

Pressure on industry.

Pressure on the psychology of society.

Pressure on the state’s ability to endure prolonged strain.

The Price of Statistics

Behind all these technical metrics lies a human cost that data can never fully capture.

Every new drone record means new destruction.

New wounded families.

New civilian deaths.

New sleepless nights for people who have already spent five years living between hope and fear.

The war has long stopped being only a line on a map.

It has become constant pressure on an entire society.

That is why peace cannot be discussed only through diplomatic formulas, military budgets, or front-line maps.

Behind every number, there are people.

Behind every strike, there are real lives.

The Breaking Point

Proximity to the negotiating table does not guarantee de-escalation.

Often, it provokes the opposite.

While the economic clock keeps ticking and logistics hubs remain key targets, both sides are putting more and more resources on the scale in an attempt to force the other into concessions.

The path to compromise rarely runs through silence.

Sometimes, it runs through maximum pressure.

That is why the coming months may be especially dangerous.

Peace may be closer than it seems.

But history shows that the road toward it does not always pass through a reduction in violence.

Sometimes, the final chapters of war are the most expensive.

More than 13,000 missiles.

That is the scale of the aerial threat Russia has unleashed against Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion.

This is no longer a series of isolated strikes.

It is a war of attrition against air defense systems themselves.

And this is where one of the most important military stories of recent months begins.

The problem is not that MIM-104 Patriot has stopped working.

Patriot remains one of the most effective air defense systems in the world, capable of intercepting even advanced ballistic targets.

The problem lies elsewhere.

The economics of the old air defense architecture are beginning to collapse under the pressure of a new kind of war.

The Five-Million-Dollar Crisis

A single PAC-3 MSE interceptor missile is estimated to cost between $4 and $5 million.

At the same time, production capacity remains limited even for the United States.

Under conditions of mass combined attacks, this becomes a strategic vulnerability.

Modern warfare is increasingly built around the logic of **saturation warfare**:

* cheap drones,

* decoys,

* aging cruise missiles,

* combined strikes,

* constant pressure on radars and interceptor stockpiles.

The central question is no longer: “Can we intercept the target?”

But rather: “Can we do it at scale and at an acceptable cost?”

This is precisely why the U.S. Army launched the **Low-Cost Interceptor (LCI)** program — an effort to create a new generation of more affordable interceptors for Patriot.

And unexpectedly, Ukraine found itself at the center of that conversation.

The Lozano Signal

Recently, Major General Frank Lozano, responsible for U.S. Army defense acquisitions, published a post discussing the search for new solutions for Patriot.

But analysts focused on something else.

The image attached to the post showed the Ukrainian FP-7 missile.

At first glance, it looked like a simple illustration.

But in the defense industry, such “coincidences” are rarely accidental.

Especially considering that FP-7.x — a Ukrainian interceptor missile designed to engage ballistic targets — is currently being developed on the basis of the FP-7 platform.

There is still no confirmation that the U.S. is seriously considering FP-7.x for the LCI program.

Most likely, the image was symbolic.

But the context itself is revealing.

Why FP-7.x Matters

According to open sources, FP-7 is being developed as a relatively low-cost and scalable platform:

* range of around 200 km,

* speed up to 1,500 m/s (approx. Mach 4.4),

* near-complete domestic production inside Ukraine,

*combination of Soviet aerodynamic lineage and modern electronics.**

If even part of these claims proves accurate, Ukraine is attempting to solve the exact problem now facing nearly every modern military: how to build a cheaper interceptor for the era of mass aerial attacks.

And this is no longer only a Ukrainian challenge.

It is becoming a challenge for the entire Western defense-industrial system.

From Fortresses to Networks

The war in Ukraine is gradually reshaping the very philosophy of air defense.

Cold War systems were designed for a different reality:

* limited numbers of targets,

* infrequent launches,

* dominance of manned aviation,

* reliance on a few highly capable systems.

Today, the world is moving toward a different model — **Distributed Air Defense**.

Its foundation includes:

* networks of inexpensive sensors,

* modular systems,

* AI integration,

* mobile interception teams,

* low-cost interceptors,

* distributed architecture instead of a handful of “invulnerable” batteries.

Ukraine is already implementing parts of this model in real combat conditions.

From mobile anti-drone groups to projects like *FrankenSAM*, where Western missiles are integrated into Soviet-era platforms.

The war is effectively turning the country into a laboratory for a new air defense architecture.

Ukraine as an Exporter of Military Concepts

The most important part of this story is not FP-7.x itself.

The real shift is Ukraine’s changing role.

For years, the country was viewed primarily as a recipient of Western weapons.

Now Ukraine is gradually beginning to export not only battlefield data, but military concepts themselves:

* distributed defense,

* low-cost interception,

* modular warfare,

* rapid adaptation,

* industrial resilience.

That is what makes the FP-7.x story so significant.

Even if the Ukrainian missile never becomes part of Patriot, the logic of the war is already reshaping how the world’s largest militaries think.

And perhaps Ukraine’s most important export today is not a weapon.

But the experience of surviving the most technologically intensive war of the 21st century.

The release of its first domestically developed guided aerial bomb is more than another weapons story.

For decades, precision weapons remained the privilege of superpowers.

Complex systems requiring massive budgets, satellite infrastructure, and decades of development.

The war in Ukraine is gradually breaking this model.

On May 18, 2026, Ukraine’s Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov confirmed that Ukraine had developed its own guided aerial bomb. The weapon was developed with support from Brave1 in just 17 months. The first experimental batch has already been procured by the Ministry of Defense, while Ukrainian pilots are testing combat deployment scenarios.

At first glance, this looks like just another story about a new weapon.

In reality, it signals a much deeper transformation.

Ukraine is gradually building its own system of low-cost precision strike.

That is what makes the appearance of the Ukrainian guided bomb strategically important.

War Is Making Precision Strike Cheaper

Paradoxically, Russia was the first to scale this logic.

Starting in 2023, the Russian military began mass-converting old Soviet FAB bombs into glide bombs using UMPK guidance kits.

Technologically, it did not look revolutionary.

But the battlefield effect was enormous.

Relatively cheap weapons suddenly gained:

• range;

• correction;

• guidance;

• and the ability to strike outside most Ukrainian air-defense coverage.

This reshaped the battlefield.

Russian aviation gained the ability to apply constant pressure on fortifications, logistics, and command centers without deeply entering dangerous air-defense zones.

In practice, the war began lowering the cost of precision strike.

Now Ukraine is responding with its own model.

Not “Perfect Weapons,” but Adaptive Weapons

The most important feature of Ukraine’s guided bomb is not the bomb itself.

The real story is the philosophy behind it.

This is not a peacetime procurement program.
Not a decade-long defense cycle.
Not an attempt to build a “perfect system.”

This is wartime engineering.

17 months from concept to deployment.
Constant frontline feedback.
Short upgrade cycles.
A focus on effectiveness here and now.

And Ukrainian engineers went beyond simply modernizing Soviet legacy systems. This is a sovereign design built specifically for the realities of modern warfare:

In the summer of 2022, HIMARS changed the course of the war.

For a long time, Russian logistics operated relatively safely 30–40 kilometers from the frontline. Conventional artillery could no longer reach those areas, while using expensive missiles against a single truck made little sense.

Now that zone is disappearing.

The main target is the M14 highway — Mariupol, Berdiansk, Melitopol — along with the parallel railway line running beside the Azov coast.

After the occupation, Russia actively expanded this infrastructure, turning it into a full-scale land corridor to Crimea. Through this route flows the supply chain for the entire southern grouping:

• fuel,

• ammunition,

• equipment,

• troop rotations,

• repair and engineering cargo.

In reality, it is one of the key arteries of the Russian military system in the south.

That is why strikes against this direction are becoming critically dangerous for Russia.

Russian Z-channels and military bloggers increasingly complain that Ukrainian drones are already operating 35–60 kilometers behind the frontline, and according to some reports — even deeper. Fuel trucks, convoys, cargo vehicles, and logistics hubs near Mariupol, Donetsk, and Pryazovia are coming under attack.

What was once considered deep rear territory is gradually turning into a contested zone.

Why These Drones Are More Dangerous Than Missiles

The main problem for Russia is not just the range.

The real issue is the combination of:

This marks a gradual transition from classic FPV warfare to semi-autonomous warfare.

3. Movement Itself Becomes Vulnerable

The new AI-assisted drones are beginning to attack the supply process itself.

What comes under threat now are:

• roads,

• routes,

• fuel convoys,

• transport columns,

• mobile reserves,

• and the very ability to move safely.

The main effect of these systems is not the number of destroyed vehicles.

The real effect is the paralysis of logistical will.

When drivers know that the probability of encountering an autonomous drone along a highway section becomes high, the system starts collapsing from within:

I am 39 years old.

I have lived in Kyiv my entire life.

On March 19, 2026, something happened to me that I had feared for years — I was forcibly mobilized into the army.

For many people outside Ukraine, this may be difficult to grasp, but today, for part of Ukrainian society, mobilization is increasingly perceived not as a voluntary choice, but as a system of harsh coercion. There is something in it that resembles the methods of ICE in the United States — when a person suddenly loses control over their own life and finds themselves inside a system whose decisions can no longer be ignored.

In a single day, my family’s life was divided into “before” and “after.”

The tears of a wife and a mother can wound even the strongest man.

Not long ago, I was a 100% civilian: writing articles, building projects, thinking about AI, technology, and the future.

Today, I am learning to live inside a completely different reality.

During training, I injured my knee and ended up in a military hospital.

It was here, lying on a hospital bed with my leg in a brace, that I truly saw the system from the inside for the first time — not only through the eyes of a mobilized man, but through the eyes of someone caught between the army, medicine, bureaucracy, and fear of the future.

But the strangest part does not even begin with physical pain. During training, people stop calling you by your name.

Not by your surname.

Not by your callsign.

By a number.

The system slowly erases individuality, turning a person into a function meant to follow orders. You are no longer an individual.

You are a number.

Somewhere between these two realities, I stopped feeling like a civilian — but I never truly became a soldier either.

And perhaps this “space in between” is one of the strangest conditions that war creates.

War is often shown through explosions, maps, drones, and headlines. But most of the time, it looks different.

It looks like waiting.

Waiting in corridors.

Waiting for documents.

Waiting for doctors.

Waiting for orders.

Waiting for the moment when you once again ask yourself whether your life still belongs to you at all.

People outside the war zone often imagine war as constant movement. But sometimes war is immobility. A suspended state where the future becomes blurred, and even the smallest decisions stop depending on you.

Recently, I lost access to the simplest things — normal contact with the outside world. A phone. Internet. Messages from loved ones.

And that was when I realized how quickly a person begins to disappear from within after losing connection with the people they love.

Not physically.

Inside.

In peaceful life, a message from a friend or a comment under an article seems ordinary. During war, such things become reminders that beyond uniforms, hospitals, bureaucracy, and anxiety, another world still exists.

This is the strange paradox of modern war: technology continues connecting people while history tries to tear them apart.

Sometimes I look around and realize that many people here are no longer driven by ideology. They are driven by circumstances, exhaustion, fear, habit, duty, or simply the absence of choice.

And perhaps that is the most uncomfortable truth about major historical events: millions of ordinary people become trapped inside systems far greater than themselves.

Later, history will simplify everything.

But real life is never simple.

Some lose their homes.

Some lose their health.

Some lose years of their lives.

And some lose themselves.

The hardest struggle is not always physical.

Sometimes it is the attempt to preserve your identity while large systems slowly try to turn you into a function, a number, or a role.

When a system tries to erase your individuality, remaining yourself becomes a form of resistance.

I do not know what comes next.

But I know one thing: when this war finally ends, many people will return home carrying invisible wounds that no statistics will ever fully show.

And perhaps rebuilding buildings will prove easier than rebuilding the inner resilience of people.

142,000 drones. Over 13,000 missiles. This is the scale of the aerial assault Russia has launched against Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war. It is no longer a series of isolated strikes. This process is not limited to the legal sector. As always, the underworld quickly adopts effective tools. This means that the technologies of modern warfare are beginning to spread far beyond the battlefield.

What looks like a forced measure in Ukraine today may become an international standard tomorrow. Ports, data centers, warehouses, energy grids, factories, and transport hubs will all be forced to think beyond ground security and focus on the sky above them. Air defense is gradually ceasing to be solely the military's job. It is becoming part of the economy.

Iranian Shahed-type drones have become one of the defining weapons of modern asymmetric warfare. They are relatively cheap, simple to produce, and capable of striking infrastructure, energy facilities, and military installations.

Ukraine has been dealing with these attacks for several years.

During that time, a range of countermeasures has been developed and widely implemented:

And in that sense, Ukraine today possesses something that many other armies do not.

The world right now looks a bit like a giant chessboard where several games are being played at the same time. What’s happening around Iran is one of those games. To understand how it connects to Ukraine, it helps to zoom out from daily headlines and look at the deeper structural forces.

First layer: Iran is not just a Middle Eastern story. It’s one of the pressure points in the broader competition between global power systems. On one side you have the U.S. and its alliance network. On another, rising powers like China expanding economic influence. And then there’s a group of states challenging the current international order — where Russia and Iran often align strategically, even if they’re not formal allies.

Third, the energy chessboard. Iran sits near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil arteries. Instability there can affect global energy prices, which ripple into European economies and indirectly influence their capacity to fund defense and support Ukraine.

Ukraine has unintentionally become a laboratory for the future of warfare. Drones, AI-assisted reconnaissance, distributed intelligence networks, crowdsourced innovation — these things are evolving faster on this battlefield than inside most traditional military systems. Chapter 1. Historical Memory and the Habit of Starting Over

A country can be taken away, but a system must be built from within.

Poland’s success did not begin in Brussels.
It began with a simple but demanding idea: a state is not defined by borders, but by an internal system carried by its people.

Since the era of noble democracy, Poland has cultivated traditions of self-governance and personal responsibility. Decisions were negotiated, not awaited. Authority was shared, not simply imposed.

When the country disappeared from the map of Europe for 123 years, this internal habit made survival possible. The role of the state was partially assumed by the Catholic Church — a parallel structure that preserved language, education, and identity.

The Second World War destroyed not only cities but entire elites: teachers, engineers, officers. It was an attempt to erase the conditions for a future. The Soviet period reinforced external control, yet failed to eliminate internal resistance.

In the 1980s, that resistance took institutional form in Solidarity — the first large-scale social contract in Eastern Europe. It was this accumulated trust that allowed the painful reforms of the 1990s to proceed. Society accepted shock therapy because the alternative was understood clearly: stagnation.

Poland absorbed a hard lesson from its history. Territory can be lost. Institutions must be rebuilt internally.
This is why its modern model grew out of a repeated readiness to start over — again and again.

Chapter 2. Geography and Decentralization: A Country Learning Balance

A network of cities is more resilient than a single dominant capital.

For much of its history, geography was not a gift to Poland. From the eighteenth century through the end of the twentieth, its position between competing powers repeatedly turned into vulnerability.

In the twenty-first century, the same geography became an asset. Positioned between the European Union and Eastern Europe, Poland transformed itself into a bridge — logistical, industrial, and commercial. Where front lines and spheres of influence once passed, economic corridors now run: highways, railways, hubs, supply chains.

On this foundation, Poland emerged as a manufacturing base for Europe. German, Korean, and Japanese companies relocated production here not as temporary outsourcing, but as part of stable industrial systems. This, in turn, pulled logistics, exports, services, education, and labor markets into a single expanding network.

Growth was reinforced by migration, primarily from Ukraine. At a moment when the economy was accelerating and facing labor shortages, Ukrainian workers filled critical gaps in construction, logistics, industry, and services. The effect was straightforward: the system received the human capacity needed to keep moving.

The defining feature of the Polish model is decentralization. Economic life is not concentrated solely in Warsaw. Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk, Kraków, Rzeszów — these are not peripheries, but autonomous nodes with their own specializations and capital flows.

A networked country absorbs shocks better. One node may weaken; the system endures.
This distributed structure is what makes the Polish model appear stable and adaptive rather than fragile.

Chapter 3. A Society Without Oligarchs: Entrepreneurship as a Systemic Base

A distributed economy produces distributed responsibility.

Against the backdrop of most post-socialist states, Poland stands out for one structural reason: the absence of an oligarchic class. There are no small groups controlling key industries, media, and politics. Poland’s wealth rankings are dominated by entrepreneurs who built businesses gradually, rather than by figures elevated through political access in the 1990s.

Instead of a pyramid, Poland developed a horizontal economy. Small and medium-sized enterprises form its backbone: family firms, workshops, farms, IT studios, service companies. Economic power is spread widely enough that it cannot be captured or subordinated to a single center.

This rests on a durable cultural trait — zaradność: a practical habit of self-reliance, adaptability, and repeated restart. Running one’s own business is often socially valued more than holding a position within state structures.

Mass emigration also played a role. Millions of Poles who worked across Europe returned not as a lost generation, but as carriers of capital, experience, and new standards. These resources translated into local enterprises, education, and regional development.

Polish society remains internally divided. Liberal urban regions coexist uneasily with a more conservative, religious east. Cities and provinces, younger and older generations, entrepreneurs and public-sector workers regularly clash over values and direction.

This friction complicates governance, but it also limits monopolization. As long as influence remains contested, no single group can fully dominate the state.

Economic pressures persist — housing costs, inflation, credit, and fatigue within the middle class. Yet the system holds because business in Poland is not an abstraction. It consists of millions of independent actors dependent on rules rather than patronage.

When economic power is dispersed, political power cannot become absolute.

Security became Poland’s strategic asset.

For decades, Poland functioned as a buffer. Strategic decisions about its fate were made elsewhere — in Berlin, Washington, or Moscow. In the event of large-scale conflict, it was viewed as a staging ground rather than a decision-maker.

After 2022, this logic changed. Poland chose to become a subject of power. Security was elevated to a core state priority. Defense spending rose to unprecedented levels — around five percent of GDP — exceeding long-standing NATO benchmarks.

This was not symbolic. It was a structural bet. Security was treated not as insurance, but as entry into a different geopolitical category.

Poland pursued comprehensive military modernization: tanks, missile systems, aircraft, bases, logistics, training. These elements were integrated into a single framework designed to make conflict prohibitively costly.

Rzeszów became the logistical symbol of this shift. A regional airport evolved into a key hub for Ukraine and NATO’s eastern flank, coordinating military and humanitarian flows and embedding Poland into the region’s security architecture.

Warsaw also made a deliberate geopolitical choice: a direct strategic alignment with the United States. Stable economic fundamentals combined with large-scale defense investment turned Poland into a priority partner for Washington.

Security spending was not isolated from the economy. Defense procurement stimulated industry, technology, and employment. Security ceased to be a budgetary burden and became an investment signal.

Poland no longer waits to be defended. It increasingly acts as a point of gravity for the Baltics, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe — shifting from a contested space to a stabilizing force.

Chapter 5. Energy and the Economy of the Future

Resilience lies in the capacity to build ahead of crises.

Economic growth is unsustainable without control over energy. For decades, Poland depended on Russian coal and gas, recognizing this dependence as a political vulnerability.

That model has been dismantled. LNG infrastructure, the Baltic Pipe, and supply diversification reduced external leverage. Poland moved from dependency toward autonomy.

The next phase is nuclear energy. Planned nuclear power plants represent a long-term calculation — not a response to immediate shocks, but a foundation for decades of stable industrial and technological development.

The structure of the economy is evolving alongside energy. The model of low-cost labor is gradually giving way to digital and technological sectors. Global firms have established development and research centers, repositioning Poland from an assembly platform to a regional node of innovation.

This transition is not without risk. Demographics remain the primary constraint. An aging population and low birth rates increase pressure on social systems and labor markets.

Migration partially offsets these trends, while introducing new integration challenges. The balance between economic necessity and social cohesion remains unresolved.

Poland’s approach is anticipatory rather than reactive. Investments in energy, technology, and human capital are attempts to design future capacity rather than merely manage present deficits.

The country is engaged in long construction — laying foundations rather than patching cracks.

Poland is neither a heroic saga nor a romantic myth. Its trajectory contains no shortcuts or miracles. It reflects how sustained institutional work can replace chaos with structure.

The country built a stable economy, a capable military, a decentralized network of regions, modern infrastructure, and predictable rules. Without cults of personality. Without permanent revolutions. Institutions, not emotions, became the organizing principle.

Growth was reinforced by migration and capital flows, including from Ukraine — shaped by war, instability, and the search for security. External shocks were integrated rather than merely endured.

Success, however, did not remove internal limits. Demographic decline persists. Political renewal is slow. Familiar figures reappear. These are signs of both maturity and constraint.

Poland offers no template to copy. It functions instead as a mirror. It shows that exiting post-socialist fragmentation is possible — but only through discipline, patience, and long-term alignment.

The future belongs not to the loudest actors, but to the most consistent ones.

The full-scale war in Ukraine has changed more than borders and alliances. It has reshaped the economics of power.

The Czech defense group Czechoslovak Group (CSG) has seen the highest demand for weapons since the end of the Cold War. Ammunition, armored vehicles, military and civilian trucks — all of this has once again become strategic infrastructure.

At the center of this story is Michal Strnad.

The 33-year-old owner of CSG nearly doubled his fortune overnight after the company’s stock market debut. Shares jumped by almost 28 percent. The IPO raised €3.3 billion. His net worth reached around $37 billion — roughly 10 percent of the Czech economy.

In practical terms, a private individual became comparable in influence to an entire country.

According to Bloomberg, CSG is now one of the key suppliers of ammunition and armored vehicles to Ukraine. The company is also benefiting from growing concerns in Europe that the United States may reduce its role as a security guarantor.

The world is entering an era where security is shaped not only by diplomacy, but by factories.

Strnad represents a rare type of billionaire in an age dominated by technology and AI fortunes: an industrial builder.

His path began long before the current spotlight. He grew up inside his father’s business. At 21, he became CEO. Five years later, he took full ownership. Today, CSG operates in nearly 70 countries and employs more than 14,000 people across Europe, the United States, and India.

Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák described him this way:

“He has an exceptionally broad understanding of things. I cannot recall a single case when he said he needed to check something, consult someone, or return to an issue later.”

This is not the description of a typical manager. It is the profile of a systemic player.

Another detail matters.

Strnad has stated that part of the IPO proceeds will be invested outside the defense sector through his family office. He is already preparing the next phase.

This reflects long-term thinking.

War has created a new class of European elites. Not politicians. Not startup founders. But architects of industrial security.

This is one of the defining shifts of our time.

Without production, there is no army. Without an army, there is no sovereignty. Without sovereignty, there is no politics.

Ukraine stands at the center of this transformation. It is here that modern economies are being tested.

In 2025, one Danish company is worth more than Denmark’s entire annual GDP. The name has become global shorthand: Novo Nordisk. Its two flagship products — Ozempic and its weight-loss version Wegovy — are everywhere from Hollywood studios to Wall Street offices. The story starts quietly.

Back in the 1980s, researchers identified GLP-1 — a hormone that tells the brain “You’re full” and helps control blood sugar. Years later that discovery led to semaglutide — a molecule no one expected to reshape a nation’s future. When the drug was approved in 2017 for people with type 2 diabetes, nobody thought it would change the global economy.

Then, between 2021 and 2025, demand exploded: shortages, waiting lists, a black market.The “side effect” turned out to be the main event: people lost weight, their appetite switched off, their relationship with food rewired. Today, more than 20 million people in the United States use GLP-1 drugs.

For Denmark, this has become an economic breakthrough: about 2% of the country’s GDP now comes from semaglutide-based medicines. A country with no oil and no gas suddenly found its own high-tech resource — powered not by geology but by biochemistry. Ozempic is no longer just a diabetes drug. It has become an economic force, a cultural marker, and a symbol of a new chapter in pharma. And the story is only beginning.

Ozempic and Wegovy were designed for people with type 2 diabetes. Weight loss wasn’t even mentioned in the original prescribing information. But in 2021–2022 doctors and patients noticed something: people were losing weight faster than on any therapy before.

The U.S. became the launchpad for a massive off-label boom. Telehealth services, subscription clinics, and cash-pay practices began selling monthly prescriptions for $900–$1500 without insurance coverage. Today, roughly one in five new GLP-1 users in the U.S. has no diabetes and no severe obesity.

These are office workers, entrepreneurs, people who just want to drop 10–15 kilos( 22 to 33 pounds ) — or finally stop fighting with their own appetite. Hollywood amplified the trend:public confessions, “Ozempic face” memes, late-night jokes — and a new body culture emerged. Tech workers followed: fewer cravings means longer focus, longer coding sessions, fewer snack breaks. Some companies are already discussing GLP-1 coverage in their corporate health plans.

The next frontier is adolescents. Wegovy is officially approved from age 12 for severe obesity — a decision now at the center of medical and parental debates. Along with the excitement comes a new challenge. Without careful exercise, part of the weight loss comes from muscle tissue — up to 30–40% according to 2024–2025 studies. This created the phenomenon of the “post-Ozempic body”: lighter, but needing physical rehab to stay strong.

Where the drug is available, people discover something they never experienced before: eating less without suffering or self-control. Where it isn’t, a new inequality grows — between those who can switch appetite off and those who must continue fighting it manually. Goldman Sachs forecasts that by 2030, the global GLP-1 market could reach $150–200 billion a year. A scale comparable to the most influential tech sectors of the 21st century.

Semaglutide has already moved beyond medicine.It has become a cultural force that shifts everyday behavior — just like social networks once shifted communication. And this is still the warm-up.

PART 3 — A Pharma Revolution: Nothing This Big in 30 Years

The last time pharma reshaped the world at this scale was in the 1990s, when statins arrived and cardiac mortality plummeted. Then — silence. Three decades of incremental change. GLP-1 drugs broke that silence almost overnight.

Semaglutide (the molecule behind Ozempic, enhancing the body’s natural “I’m full” signal) is now shown to reduce cardiovascular risks — a shift that takes it far beyond diabetes care.

Eli Lilly, the U.S. pharma giant behind Mounjaro and Zepbound, pushed competition even harder: their dual-hormone drug tirzepatide delivers 22–25% average weight loss in a year.

The next wave is already visible: triple agonists — drugs acting on three metabolic pathways at once — with expected weight-loss efficacy up to 30–35%. It’s a medical alternative to bariatric surgery — without scalpels and long recovery. The fallout is immediate:

• Weight Watchers has lost nearly 90% of its market value — calorie-counting feels obsolete.

• Bariatric surgeries in the U.S. have fallen by about one-third — if there’s a needle instead of a knife, people will choose the needle.

• Sales of sugary drinks and fast food are slipping in regions with high GLP-1 adoption.

Economics move fastest:

Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly have added about $1.3 trillion in combined market value in just six years. A transformation on the scale of the smartphone rise in the 2000s. But every revolution has a cost: 5–10% of patients discontinue due to nausea or digestive issues. Muscle loss remains a concern — up to 30–40% of total weight lost can be lean mass. And rebound weight gain after stopping therapy is real — documented in leading medical journals.

GLP-1 is powerful medicine — not a cosmetic trick, not a wellness hack. And precisely this mix of strength and limitations makes it a turning point. Pharma has become a technology of mass behavior, influencing how millions of people live day-to-day. A new pharmaceutical era is forming — with its own rules and ecosystems.

PART 4 — Ozempic + AI: The Duo That Switches Off Two Human “Musts”

In just three years, two technologies have emerged that reduce the biggest daily burdens of human effort: thinking and eating.

And in this competition, Ukraine becomes a natural ally: experienced, capable, and determined to be energy-independent.

Ukraine, with its scientific legacy and strategic location, could become a key node in this ecosystem — a bridge between energy and intelligence.

Energy is more than megawatts.

It is the architecture of independence and trust.

Whoever controls energy shapes the future.

And today, Ukraine is helping design that future.
