only knew it wasn't supposed to be good.

They said it when someone cried.

When someone was scared.

When someone spoke softly.

When someone couldn't fight back.

When someone was too sensitive.

When someone didn't act the way a boy was supposedly supposed to act.

“Are you Gay?”

Sometimes it was a joke.

Sometimes it was an insult.

Sometimes it was just thrown into a sentence so casually that nobody even noticed.

But I noticed.

Children notice things adults think they'll forget.

I didn't understand sexuality yet, but I understood humiliation.

I didn't know what being gay meant, but I knew I didn't want people to call me that.

And isn't that strange?

How can a child be taught to be ashamed of an identity before they even understand it?

Maybe that's where the problem begins.

Not when someone comes out.

Not when someone falls in love.

Not when someone realizes they're different.

Much earlier.

It begins when we teach children that gay means weak.

That gay means feminine.

That gay means cowardly.

That gay means emotional.

That gay means something is wrong with you.

We don't even have to say "being gay is bad."

We teach it indirectly.

A boy cries.

"Don't be gay."

A boy is afraid.

"Why are you acting gay?"

A boy doesn't like sports.

"Are you gay or what?"

A boy speaks differently.

Everyone laughs.

"Gay."

And then we wonder why some boys grow up terrified of being perceived as anything other than masculine.

We tell them to be strong.

But what we sometimes mean is:

Don't cry.

Don't be gentle.

Don't be vulnerable.

Don't be soft.

Don't be different.

Don't give anyone a reason to question you.

And eventually, the boy learns something much more dangerous than the word itself.

He learns to monitor himself.

How he walks.

How he talks.

How he laughs.

How he sits.

How he touches his friends.

How much emotion he shows.

How much of himself is safe to reveal.

Imagine growing up believing that every natural part of your personality needs to be inspected before it becomes visible.

And here's where the conversation becomes uncomfortable.

Because people often say,

"It's just a joke."

Maybe it is.

But jokes teach.

Repeated jokes become language.

Language becomes association.

Association becomes belief.

And belief can become shame.

You don't need to explicitly tell a child to hate gay people.

Sometimes all you have to do is repeatedly use gay as the punchline.

Eventually, the child learns the equation:

gay = bad.

And if that child eventually discovers they're gay?

Now they aren't just discovering themselves.

They're confronting everything they were taught to hate.

That's the part people don't always understand.

Coming out isn't always simply saying,

"I'm gay."

Sometimes it's standing in front of years of conditioning and saying,

"Maybe everything I was taught about this was wrong."

Maybe that's why some people take years to accept themselves.

Not because they don't know.

But because knowing and accepting are two completely different things.

You can know something about yourself and still spend years fighting it.

You can pray about it.

Hide it.

Deny it.

Laugh along when someone makes a joke.

Pretend you didn't hear the insult.

Fall in love quietly.

Then go home and wonder why being yourself feels like something you have to apologize for.

And perhaps the cruelest irony is this:

The person being called "gay" as an insult might eventually realize that gay is exactly who they are.

Then what?

Do they hate themselves because of the word?

Or do they finally take the word back?

Maybe that's what growing up can become.

Not becoming someone new.

But unlearning everything that convinced you there was something wrong with who you already were.

I don't think the answer is to demand that everyone suddenly understand sexuality perfectly.

People are allowed to be ignorant.

What they shouldn't be allowed to do is turn their ignorance into someone else's shame.

You don't have to understand someone's identity to treat them with dignity.

You don't have to agree with someone's life to stop using their existence as an insult.

And you certainly don't have to understand why someone is gay before understanding that gay is not a synonym for weak.

A gay person can be strong.

A straight person can be weak.

A gay person can be gentle.

A straight person can be cruel.

A gay person can cry.

A straight person can cry.

None of those things determine someone's worth.

So perhaps we should stop asking,

"Why are people so sensitive about the word gay?"

And start asking:

Why did we teach an entire generation that being gay was something humiliating in the first place?

Because maybe the problem was never the child who was called gay.

Maybe the problem was the culture that made gay an insult.

And maybe the most powerful thing we can do now is change what the next child hears.

Let a boy cry without questioning his sexuality.

Let a boy be gentle without questioning his masculinity.

Let a child grow up without learning that there is a particular kind of person they should be afraid of becoming.

Because one day, that child might grow up and realize that the word everyone used to make him feel small was never a curse.

It was simply a word.

And he gets to decide what it means to him.

They called me gay before I even knew what gay meant.

I just wish they had taught me that there was nothing wrong with the word before they taught me to be afraid of it.

I Never Feared Rejection

I feared changing the way you looked at isn't.

The hardest part is already knowing they won't.

Long before your heart gathers enough courage to confess, reality has already answered for them.

So you don't spend nights wondering whether to risk it.

You spend nights convincing yourself that you shouldn't.

Because some people are worth losing your feelings for.

Just not worth losing altogether.

I remember the first time I caught myself looking at you a little longer than I should have.

It wasn't dramatic.

No movie soundtrack.

No sudden realization.

Just one random afternoon.

You laughed.

I laughed too.

Then, for reasons I still can't explain, I went home carrying your laugh with me.

That should've been my first warning.

Instead, I mistook it for admiration.

Then admiration became comfort.

Comfort became attachment.

Attachment became something I refused to name.

You know what's funny?

The heart never asks for permission.

It doesn't check whether someone is straight.

It doesn't ask whether the timing is right.

It simply chooses.

Then leaves you to deal with the consequences.

You became my favorite notification.

The first person I wanted to tell whenever something good happened.

The first name I searched for in crowded rooms.

The first person I looked at whenever everyone laughed.

I hated that.

Because none of those things were supposed to mean anything.

Then one day you asked me,

"Can I ask you something?"

I said yes.

You started talking about someone you liked.

I smiled.

I even helped you compose the message.

I reread every sentence before you sent it.

I told you which one sounded too desperate.

Which one sounded just right.

You thanked me.

You had no idea you were asking the wrong person.

That's the strange thing about loving someone silently.

Sometimes you become the bridge that leads them to someone else.

And you build it well.

Because loving them somehow became more important than choosing yourself.

People say,

"Why didn't you just tell them?"

As if confession is always an act of courage.

Sometimes confession is an act of selfishness.

Because what exactly was I hoping to achieve?

You weren't hiding your sexuality.

You weren't confused.

You weren't sending mixed signals.

You were simply living your life.

It wasn't your responsibility to carry feelings you never asked for.

So I kept mine.

Not because I was ashamed.

Because they belonged to me.

Some people think silence is fear.

Mine wasn't.

Mine was respect.

Respect for your truth.

Respect for your peace.

Respect for the friendship that existed before my heart complicated it.

You know what hurt the most?

Not that you loved someone else.

Not even close.

It was realizing I had become so good at pretending that even I started believing we were just friends.

Until you'd accidentally touch my shoulder.

Until you'd say,

"You're honestly one of my favorite people."

Until you'd hug me goodbye without realizing that I'd spend the entire ride home trying to forget how that felt.

People think heartbreak begins after rejection.

Mine began every time I had to act normal.

Every birthday message I rewrote three times so it wouldn't sound too affectionate.

Every compliment I swallowed because it might reveal too much.

Every time you called me "bro."

Every time someone asked if we were dating and I laughed a little too quickly.

You never rejected me.

You never even had the chance.

And somehow...

that hurt more.

Because rejection gives you somewhere to place the pain.

Silence doesn't.

Silence keeps the door unlocked.

Not open.

Not closed.

Just unlocked enough for your mind to whisper,

"What if?"

But I already knew.

There was never a what if.

Only a what could never be.

So one day, I stopped hoping.

Not because I stopped loving you.

Because I loved you enough to stop asking life to make you someone you weren't.

People think love always wants to be chosen.

I don't think so.

Sometimes love simply wants the other person to be happy.

Even if happiness has your absence written all over it.

Looking back, I don't think my story is tragic because I fell in love with someone who could never love me back.

I think it's tragic because the greatest love I've ever carried is a story that no one will ever know happened.

No photos.

No anniversaries.

No first date.

No breakup.

No closure.

Just a friendship the world could see...

and a love that only I could.

Maybe that's why it still aches.

Not because I lost you.

But because I had to grieve someone who never knew they were being loved.

And maybe that is the loneliest kind of love there is.

The one that asks for nothing.

Says nothing.

Becomes nothing.

Yet somehow...

changes everything.

Nobody Warns You About This Part of Growing ended.

Every little problem that felt like the end of the world.

I never thought twice about telling them.

The moment something went wrong, they were the first people I ran to.

I wasn't worried about burdening them.

I wasn't worried about ruining their day.

I wasn't worried about making them anxious.

I was just a child.

And children have this beautiful confidence that someone else will carry the weight for them.

So I handed them everything.

My fears.

My tears.

My worries.

And somehow, they always made life feel smaller than my problems.

But somewhere along the way, something changed.

Not overnight.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

Slowly.

Almost without me noticing.

One day, my mother started telling me about the bills.

One day, my father talked about his health.

One day, the conversations stopped being about my problems and started becoming about theirs.

And that's when I realized something.

We switched places.

The people I used to run to for shelter were now looking for somewhere to rest too.

The strange thing is that while they became more open about their worries, I became more careful about mine.

When they ask me how I'm doing, I say,

I'm okay.

Even when I'm not.

When they ask if work is stressful, I laugh and say,

Nothing I can't handle.

Even when I'm exhausted.

When life starts falling apart, I tell my friends.

I tell strangers online.

I tell nobody.

But rarely my parents.

Not because I don't trust them.

Because I do.

Maybe more than anyone.

But something happens when you see your parents getting older.

You start noticing things.

The gray hairs.

The slower steps.

The tired eyes they think nobody sees.

And suddenly, you don't want to add to the weight they're already carrying.

So you hide things.

Not out of distance.

Out of love.

Which makes me wonder.

How many things did they hide from me when I was young?

How many nights did they stay awake worrying about money while acting normal the next morning?

How many fears did they swallow so I could grow up feeling safe?

Maybe that's why adulthood feels so strange.

Because for years, we wished our parents would understand us.

Then one day, we become old enough to understand them.

And honestly?

I think that's when your heart breaks a little.

Because you realize they were never as strong as you thought.

They were just as scared.

Just as confused.

Just as human.

They simply loved you enough to carry it quietly.

Now they're telling me about their problems.

And I'm hiding mine.

Not because we've grown apart.

But because we've grown into each other.

I'm becoming them.

They're becoming human.

And somewhere between those two things, I find myself missing the days when I could run into a room, cry about something ridiculous, and trust that my parents would make everything okay.

Sometimes I still want to do that.

Sometimes I still need to.

But adulthood teaches you a different kind of love.

The kind where your mother says she's worried, and you listen.

The kind where your father admits he's tired, and you pretend not to notice how much that scares you.

The kind where both of you say,

Don't worry about me.

Even though that's exactly what you're doing.

Maybe growing up isn't learning how to carry your own problems.

Maybe it's realizing that the people who once carried yours have been carrying theirs all along.

And for the first time, you wish you could carry some of them back.

Time Didn't Heal Me

It only taught me how to carry what bedtime stories, the sound of laughter echoing through the walls of a home that never made them question whether they were safe.

And then there are children who remember silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind that arrives after shouting. The kind that lingers in hallways after doors have been slammed. The kind that teaches you, before you even know the meaning of fear, that love can exist in the same room as pain.

I belonged to the second kind.

I cannot tell you the exact moment my childhood ended. There was no single tragedy dramatic enough to mark it, no chapter where everything suddenly collapsed. It disappeared quietly, almost politely, one ordinary day at a time. It left through conversations that became arguments, through promises that dissolved into disappointment, through nights that were somehow louder than mornings ever were.

Children have a remarkable talent for adapting to things they should never have to understand.

We convince ourselves that chaos is ordinary because it is the only world we've ever known. We mistake survival for maturity. We wear responsibility like clothing that is several sizes too large, dragging behind us wherever we go.

No one notices.

Because children rarely know how to ask for help.

They simply become quieter.

Looking back now, I realize I spent more years anticipating storms than watching sunsets. I learned to read people's footsteps before I learned to trust their words. I memorized the changing weather inside other people's hearts because my own depended on it. Every shift in someone's voice felt like a warning. Every silence became something to decipher.

That is what fear does when it grows up with you.

It becomes fluent in your language.

People often imagine healing as something beautiful. They picture sunlight pouring through open windows. They speak of closure as though life gently wraps every wound with a ribbon before letting it go.

But that has never been my experience.

Pain is rarely loud after enough years have passed.

It becomes quieter.

Far more patient.

It settles into the furniture of your soul until you no longer notice its presence. It sits beside you while you laugh with friends. It follows you into every relationship, whispering that people eventually leave. It rests inside every achievement, reminding you that accomplishment and emptiness can occupy the same heart.

Perhaps that is why some of us become experts at appearing whole.

The world rewards those who function.

It applauds resilience.

It admires people who continue showing up despite everything they have endured.

What it rarely asks is what it cost them to become that person.

There is a loneliness that comes from being admired for surviving circumstances no one should have survived in the first place.

People call you strong because they have only witnessed the version of you that learned not to cry in public.

They never meet the child who still startles at raised voices.

The teenager who believed love always came with conditions.

The adult who apologizes instinctively, even when they have done nothing wrong.

The deepest wounds are not always the ones that leave scars upon the skin.

Some settle somewhere language cannot quite reach.

They reveal themselves in hesitation.

In overthinking.

In the unbearable instinct to leave before someone else has the chance to.

In believing that being needed is safer than being loved.

I spent years believing I was healing simply because I had stopped talking about what hurt.

But silence is not the same thing as peace.

For a long time, I confused numbness with acceptance.

I confused endurance with recovery.

I confused existing with living.

There is a quiet kind of exhaustion that comes from carrying memories that no longer scream but never stop speaking. They don't interrupt your life anymore. They narrate it. Softly. Constantly. Like rain against a window you eventually stop hearing, even though it never truly stops falling.

Sometimes I wonder who I might have become if life had introduced me to gentleness before it introduced me to grief.

Would I have loved more freely?

Would I have trusted without rehearsing goodbye?

Would I have believed that home was a place instead of a longing?

There are no answers waiting for questions like these.

Only echoes.

Only possibilities that belong to another version of my life.

Yet despite everything, something within me refused to disappear completely.

Not hope.

Hope feels too bright a word.

Perhaps it was simply a quiet refusal to let pain become the only language I ever spoke.

So I kept going.

Not because I was fearless.

Not because I had healed.

But because somewhere beneath all the brokenness, beneath the years of surviving, beneath the child who never truly felt safe, there remained the smallest, most stubborn belief that life could still become something softer than what I had known.

I think that is what resilience really is.

Not standing untouched by suffering.

But carrying tenderness through a world that kept trying to convince you to become hard.

And if there is one thing I have learned after all these years, it is this:

The greatest tragedies are not always the ones that destroy us.

Sometimes they are the ones that quietly convince us we must carry every sorrow alone.

The greatest miracle, then, is not that we survive.

It is that, despite everything, some part of us still believes we are worthy of a life that feels like peace.

there are funerals we never attend.

The death of childhood. wondering...

what if the things we inherit aren't the ones we can touch?

what if, long before we inherited our parents' eyes, we had already inherited the way they flinch at raised voices? the way they apologize too much. the way they hide their tears until everyone is asleep.

i used to think i was simply "like my mother."

i'm quiet when i'm hurt.

i convince myself that staying silent keeps the peace.

i carry everyone's problems as if they were mine to solve.

for the longest time, i believed those were personality traits.

but maybe they weren't.

maybe they were survival skills passed from one generation to the next.

and then i started noticing my father.

the way he struggled to express affection.

the way anger arrived faster than vulnerability.

the way silence became easier than saying, "i'm hurting."

it made me wonder...

who taught him that?

was there a little boy inside him who also wanted to cry but was told to be strong?

was there someone before him who believed love was something you earned through endurance instead of something freely given?

maybe people sacrifice replaced affection.

a language where surviving was more important than feeling.

and maybe that's how cycles begin.

not because people want to hurt the next generation...

but because they don't realize they're handing down wounds disguised as wisdom.

we inherit phrases like, "don't cry."

"just endure."

"that's just how life is."

we inherit fear that looks like discipline.

silence that looks like respect.

self-neglect that looks like strength.

until one day, we hear ourselves saying the exact same words we once promised we'd never say.

that's when it frightens you.

because you realize healing isn't only about recovering from what happened to you.

it's about making sure it doesn't continue through you.

maybe that's the real inheritance.

not the pain itself...

but the choice of whether it ends with us.

and i keep asking myself like it or not, there will come a morning when people gather in one place because our name is no longer spoken in the present tense.

some will come because they loved us.

some because they were family.

some because they felt they had to.

and maybe a few because they simply wanted to say goodbye.

but lately, i've been wondering about something else.

when they stand there, what story will they tell about you?

will they remember your achievements?

your degree?

your salary?

the things you owned?

or will they remember the quiet things?

the afternoons you stayed when everyone else left.

the messages you sent without being asked.

the way you made people feel safe enough to cry.

the kindness you showed when no one was watching.

it's strange how we're taught to spend our lives chasing things that won't be mentioned when our story is finally told.

we work overtime for promotions.

we lose sleep trying to prove ourselves.

we spend years trying to become successful enough for strangers to admire us.

but i've never heard anyone say,

"what i'll miss the most is how much money they made."

instead, people remember laughter.

they remember forgiveness.

they remember who answered the phone at two in the morning.

they remember who stayed after everyone else had already gone home.

maybe that's because a person's life isn't measured by what they collected.

it's measured by what they left behind in other people's hearts.

sometimes i wonder how many opportunities i've missed to be kinder because i was too busy.

how many conversations i rushed because i thought there would always be another one.

how many people quietly needed me while i was distracted by things that won't matter years from now.

the truth is, none of us knows when we're seeing someone for the last time.

there will be a last hug you never realized was the last.

a last laugh.

a last "see you tomorrow" that never becomes tomorrow.

and that thought changes everything.

it makes ordinary moments feel less ordinary.

it reminds me that the people sitting around my table today won't always be there.

that one day, the voices filling my home will become memories i would give anything to hear again.

maybe that's why i've stopped asking myself,

"how successful do i want to become?"

and started asking,

"what kind of person do i want people to remember?"

because in the end, people rarely remember the life you built.

they remember the life they experienced because you were in it.

so here's the question i can't stop thinking about—

if the people who love you had to describe the way you lived in just one sentence... what would they say, and would it be the same sentence you'd hope to leave behind?

why do we forgive people who never sorry."

no explanation.

no accountability.

not even the smallest acknowledgment that they hurt you.

they simply continued with their lives, while you were left carrying questions they never cared enough to answer.

for a long time, i thought what i needed was an apology.

i imagined how different everything would feel if one day my phone lit up with a message that simply said, "i know i hurt you."

i thought those words would finally give me peace.

but the more i waited, the more i realized something.

i wasn't waiting for an apology anymore.

i was waiting for proof that my pain mattered.

because that's what an apology really is.

it's someone saying, "i see what i did. i know it hurt you."

and maybe that's why silence hurts so much.

it makes you question everything.

you start wondering if you exaggerated what happened.

if you were too sensitive.

if maybe it wasn't as painful as you remember.

it's strange how people can make you doubt your own wounds simply by pretending they don't exist.

sometimes i wonder if the people who hurt us ever think about us.

do certain memories randomly cross their minds the way they cross ours?

do they ever lose sleep because of the words they said?

or are we just another chapter they've already forgotten?

i don't know.

and maybe i never will.

that's the hardest part about healing.

you eventually realize that closure isn't always something another person gives you.

sometimes it's something you have to build with your own hands.

slowly.

painfully.

without the answers you thought you deserved.

i still believe people should apologize when they've hurt someone.

not because it changes the past, but because it honors the pain they caused.

but life doesn't always work that way.

some people will never admit they were wrong.

some people protect their pride more than they protect the people they hurt.

and some people have become so comfortable justifying their actions that saying "i'm sorry" would mean confronting a version of themselves they're not ready to face.

so maybe forgiveness isn't saying,

"it's okay."

because some things are never okay.

maybe forgiveness is simply deciding that your life deserves more than spending another year waiting for someone who has already moved on.

and maybe that's what makes forgiveness so difficult.

you're not letting go of the person.

you're letting go of the hope that one day they'll finally become the person you needed them to be.

so tell me... have you forgiven them because your heart finally found peace, or because it grew tired of waiting for an apology that was never person who existed long before all of this. before the arguments, before the tears she tried to hide, before the weight she carried that no one really sees all the way through.

sometimes i wonder what she dreamed of when she was younger.

was she always meant to survive this version of life? or did she once imagine something softer… something peaceful… something that didn’t require her to keep rebuilding herself after every breaking point?

because the truth is—i see her crying sometimes.

and i don’t understand how someone can break quietly like that and still continue the next day as if the world didn’t just shift inside her.

it makes me question everything about strength.

because maybe strength isn’t always loud.

maybe sometimes it just looks like staying… even when everything inside you is already tired.

and the house… it remembers everything.

it doesn’t speak, but it holds it all anyway. every heavy silence, every sharp word, every moment where the air felt too tight to breathe properly. it feels like the walls have learned our pain better than anyone else ever could.

then there’s my little brother.

and seeing him scares me in a different way.

because i recognize that look in his eyes—the confusion, the fear, the quiet way he tries to understand something no child should ever have to decode. it’s the same look i once had when i was younger… when i started learning too early that safety isn’t always guaranteed, even at home.

and i keep asking myself what this is doing to him.

what kind of thoughts grow in a child who learns to stay silent before he even learns how to fully express what he feels?

what kind of future is shaped by nights like these?

because words… words don’t always leave marks you can see.

sometimes they go deeper than anything physical ever could—staying long after the room is quiet again, repeating themselves in your mind when everything else tries to move on.

and the hardest part is this:

we all live under the same roof… but we are not living the same reality. we are each carrying a different version of survival, and calling it “normal” because we don’t know what else to call it.

so i keep wondering—

what does a child become when their first understanding of love is mixed with fear?

and when a house teaches pain before it teaches peace… how does someone ever learn what peace is supposed to feel like?

The Kind of Tiredness That Sleep Can't length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

Not the kind of tiredness that disappears after a good night's sleep. Not the exhaustion caused by a long day at work or school. But the kind that settles deep within your soul. The kind that follows you everywhere. The kind that makes you smile in public while silently breaking down in private.

Many people misunderstand what it means to struggle with thoughts of giving up. Often, it is not a desire for death itself. Rather, it is a desperate longing for the pain to stop. It is the feeling of being overwhelmed by grief, disappointment, loneliness, expectations, or burdens that seem impossible to put down. Sometimes, life becomes so heavy that even breathing feels like work.

The difficult truth is that some of the strongest people are also the quietest sufferers. They continue showing up. They continue helping others. They continue laughing, studying, working, and fulfilling their responsibilities while carrying battles that nobody sees. They become so skilled at hiding their pain that people assume they are doing fine.

But behind closed doors, many are fighting wars within themselves.

If this is you, I hope you understand something important: surviving is not a small achievement. The fact that you are still here despite everything you have lost, everything you have endured, and every night you thought you would not make it through is proof of a strength you may not even recognize in yourself.

Life has a way of convincing us that our current pain will last forever. In our darkest moments, it whispers lies—that nothing will change, that nobody understands, that there is no reason to continue. Yet time and time again, people discover that pain, no matter how intense, is not permanent.

Healing is slow. Sometimes painfully slow. It does not happen overnight. Some wounds take months. Others take years. But healing is possible.

Stay.

Stay for the sunsets you have not yet seen. Stay for the places you have not yet explored. Stay for the prayers that have not yet been answered. Stay for the people who love you, even if you do not always feel it. Stay for the future version of yourself who will one day look back and be grateful that you held on.

You have survived every difficult day up to this moment. And perhaps that is enough reason to believe that you can survive one more.

One day, the weight will not feel as heavy as it does today. One day, the things that hurt you will no longer define you. One day, you will discover that life still has beauty waiting for you.

Until then, keep going.

The world is better with you in it.
