This is a series I will call ANTIQUE WORDS. (Isn’t that just so cute!) As I discover new words, I’ll share about them. If you watch my youtube channel, you will have heard me talk about the word “olitory” also a flower word, but that’s what one of the words I’m mentioning today.

Archaic words are obsolete words that have passed in time and usefulness, according to our modern Merriam Webster dictionary. And antiquated is a fun synonym to archaic.

I love being inspired by history, studying and finding old books to read. And the fruit of studying and reading old books is discovering words that are no longer used in our vocabulary…. enter the words nosegay, tussie mussie (various spellings) and posy.

If you read this article I wrote about reading Persuasion by Jane Austen, this is what lead me down the nosegay rabbit trail, where I then discovered the word tussie mussie. I was already familiar with the word posy from other old books (I wish I remembered which ones, but who knows, it could have been another Jane Austen novel.)

Old Definitions:

NO'SEGAY, noun. A bunch of flowers used to regale the sense of smelling.

PO’SY, noun s as z. A bunch of flowers.

Now Tussie-Mussie is an interesting one… with this being the more “modern as in early 1900’s” spelling and definition.

TUSSIE-MUSSIE, noun. 1. a small bunch of flowers or herbs. 2. a cone-shaped holder for a bouquet.

In my research, there are SO many variant spellings depending on the time it was used. The 1903 Old Time Gardens book spells it as Tussy-mussies. It was commonly used pre 17th century, then sadly it turned into a slang word deemed inappropriate. Maybe that’s why I can’t find it in any 1800’s dictionaries? But it seems to have made a comeback to it’s original INTENDED meaning in the 1900’s, as it can be found in these dictionaries (yayy redeeming words/taking back what evil tries to steal.)

How They Were Used

Smithsonian Gardens says this in it’s article Floral Arts and Fashion:

“Small bouquets, called nosegays, posies, or tussie mussies were carried by debutantes, matrons, and girls, and they were a popular gift in the mid to late 1800s among friends and suitors…

By the 1830s carrying small bouquets of flowers in decorative holders was an established fashion accessory of the upper class and royalty of Europe. These small accessories, also known as posy holders, ‘porte-bouquets’, and ‘bouquetiers’ were both decorative as well as useful. By providing a water source in the bottom of the receptacle, they were able to keep the flowers fresh throughout an occasion, and they also protected the wearer’s gloves or clothing from being stained by the plant pigments.”

“Bouquet holders reached the peak of their popularity between the 1830s and 1880s, but it began to dwindle as bouquets of long-stemmed flowers (the latest horticultural development) loosely tied with ribbons surpassed the posy bouquet style. They were not totally out of fashion until the “Roaring Twenties,” when such objects became regarded as trivial and useless. The diversity of styles and mechanisms of bouquet holders is evidence of their longevity as a fashion accessory.”

I found this SO fascinating. I’ve never even considered “long-stemmed flowers” as a “new” development. And it’s interesting, because even today most of our bouquets are with long stemmed flowers. Yet when I look what grows wild on our property, which I would assume be the native flowers, they are all short stems. And it seems that most nosegays and posy’s were made up of native wild flowers and herbs.

Here is a Posy Holder dated back to 1854 per the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you can see just how small it would be, being it’s a pin. So it clearly would only fit a few flowers and herbs:

Nosegay in Literature

This is a beautiful poem in the book The Lullaby : With Original Engravings by John D. Felter, 1851. It is a poem book for children. I love this though because again, all the flowers mentioned are wild flowers, ones that many of us can find without ever having to plant them! AND, can we all just stop and admire the cover of this book… so pretty!!

Here is yet another poem mentioning Nosegay from the 1893 illustrated poetry collection published in London by Raphael Tuck & Sons called "Flowers I Bring and Songs I Sing"

Becoming Brand Names

Nosegay had such a positive connotation that several companies in the 1800’s created brandnames and trademarks with it. This next image you will see Burrell & Whitman Cheese’s registered trademark and logo for their Nosegay Club Cheese. I had to look up “what is club cheese” and it is/was a cheese spread. Which makes sense that it was sold in jars. I found the jars that this logo was used on and oh they were beautiful! Can you image cheese being sold in these jars today?

My hope for writing this article was to encourage ladies to leave the rat race of anxious toil that I feel much of popular culture pressures us into. It’s okay for us to slow down. It’s okay to opt out of the hustle culture. I actually recommend it!

Even as I write this, I’m remembering when I first quit my job to be a homemaker 8 years ago. When Scott would get home from work, or he’d call me at lunch, I would feel the need to give him the run down of how productive I have been. “Here are all the things I’ve done today….” I honestly didn’t even realize I was doing it, until one day he said to me, something to the effect of “you don’t need to prove to me how hard you’ve worked today. I’d be happy for you to spend your time in worship and/or reading a book…” He trusted me and how I stewarded my time. This has always stuck with me! It took so much pressure off of me.

My worth in being a homemaker and helper to my husband is not in how much I can accomplish in a day. And there IS a lot to be done, praise the Lord for the work of our hands! This isn’t encouraging you to be lazy/slothful and sit on the couch all day eating Cheetos (which is what most people imagine homemakers do) but home isn’t a rat race, it’s not something to anxiously toil at. And often taking time to read a book, your bible, spend time in worship, out in the sunshine, these things will often give you MORE motivation to get things done.

You know I love studying the etymology of words, so lets look at the word lazy per etymoline.com. LAZY: 1540s, laysy, of persons, "averse to labor, action, or effort,"

A similar, more detailed definition from the 1828 Websters Dictionary:
LA’ZY, adjective
1. Disinclined to action or exertion; naturally or habitually slothful; sluggish; indolent; averse to labor; heavy in motion.

Does this describe you? Are you averse to labor, action or effort? Is it a habit for you to be averse to working? If so, then you need to bring this before Jesus, repent and ask Him for help. What is making you stuck? Is there a lie that you are believing?

If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.”

Now, if laziness is an aversion to labor, then could it be possible that many ladies are actually using their job to avoid their God given work/labor/assignment of helping their husband, tending to their home and raising their children (unless of course if your husband has asked you to work outside the home)? Just maybe they are using their job to justify not helping their husband. To justify getting away from their house. To justify getting away from their children. Read the Proverbs 31 woman in light of this paragraph. Then read Titus 2.

The Proverbs 31 woman worked very hard and she got to enjoy the fruit of her hands! “Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.” (Proverbs 31:16).

It’s a strawman to say a homemaker or a wife at home doesn’t work. It’s a different work. I actually think often it requires more focus and intention than if you were to go out to “a job” because you must motivate yourself. No one is here telling you what needs to get done today. It’s up to you to see the needs in front of you each day and do them. Now, you can ask your husband, “is there anything you need me to do today, or help with today” but at the end of the day, part of you being a helper is foreseeing what needs to be done and putting action towards those things.

Food needs to be made, laundry needs to get done, rooms need to be picked up, floors need to be swept, the garden and animals needs to be kept, food and supplies need to be researched and purchased, the budget needs to be updated, paperwork/admin needs to be done/organized, dishes need to be washed, children need to be raised/taught, skills to be learned, hobbies to be pursued, events to be planned, family/church friends to be helped and allll the other various things and projects that you, your husband and children are working towards that are unique to you. The list is long and I’m sure you can also add in all the extra things you do to help your husband in his unique work/mission! Do you see why this is a work and a GOOD and IMPORTANT work at that?

Because people have been conditioned to go to a job, come home, eat freezer meals, and scroll, there is little to no concept of any other work besides what was done for 8 hours at their job. This is why so many career/job women ask homemakers, “what do you do all day?” or say “I would be so bored.” Because if you’re not at a job, then you must be doing what I do when I get home, which is scroll and watch tv.

Slowing down has enabled me to stop and see what our household and my husband actually needs from me and then for me to take the time to learn skills that help my husband and build our home economy. We immediately noticed a huge difference in peace when I quit my job to start learning how to make helping my husband and building our home my career. I was no longer competing with my husband, living separate lives, or comparing to instagram or cultural expectations.

Here’s a video, we recorded in 2019. I love it because it reminds me of those early days of being a homemaker and how exciting it was to quit the rat race and learn to build our home economy:

God sees you. He loves you. He sent the Holy Spirit to help you. AND great will be your reward!

So what is slow living? Well, we can easily contrast it to fast living or living fastly. I know, I know, fastly isn’t a word and considered bad grammar, but it was once a commonly used word. According to etymonline.com, it meant “quickly” but became obsolete in the 19th century. It’s a shame because it works so well in comparing living slowly to living fastly. Alas, I guess I can go along with using “living quickly” or “fast living” for proper grammars sake.

Anyways, back to comparing slow living to fast living. Fast living, to me, relates to hurrying, anxiety, waste, and convenient consumerism. It’s the life most people are living today. I think it’s safe to say it’s why so many women are on medications, suffering with depression and anxiety. Because we are propagandized that we can do it all! And if you can’t do it all, then you’re not a “highly ambitious woman”… whatever that means. The result is a life of hurry, waste, and anxiety, all in the name of “convenience” and chasing worldly validation and approval.

Convenience isn’t all bad. I’m thankful for much of modern technology, the tools that help getting things done quicker and better. I recently shared a video of the reel mower Scott bought at an auction in 2021 for $5 and how he aimed to mow our whole yard with it that summer. And yet the best use of his time and energy for that yard ended up meaning using our gas push mower. Convenience isn’t bad, but seeking convenience at any and all cost has its consequences. As does chasing worldly validation and approval.

This is why I create videos on Youtube, and why we have a Substack. We desire to give a positive vision for living a slow life, a life of following God’s design, even if it’s “uncool” or counter cultural. Much of our life is the opposite of fast living. If slow living is the opposite of fast living, it means not living in a hurry. It means I’m not anxiously toiling. It means being content with what God has given me to steward right now. It means paying attention to what I have to steward in this season. To be aware of the very real temptation of looking to the left and to the right at what everyone else has and what I don’t.

What I have noticed is women seeing being a homemaker as an opportunity to become an online content creator, and therefore creating for themselves another rat race which they are anxiously toiling at. They have traded the fast life of corporate or a 9-5 for a fast life of cranking out content. I’m sure they wanted to quit their jobs to be home with their children, but I can’t help but wonder if their days are filled with looking at their phones, their minds racing, turning every moment into an opportunity for "content creation”. THIS IS NOT homemaking. This is content creation careerism using home and children as the content.

And media is a wonderful tool for giving a positive vision for following God’s ways and God’s design for homemaking, but if media controls you, controls your thoughts, controls your days, then it’s your ruler and is no longer a tool, but your master. AND it is just so common now to see “homemaking” women selling you a course on how you can “have a side hustle at home” and their hustle is to make a profit off of you buying a course on how you can have a side hustle. The irony. Again, this doesn’t always apply, but it certainly does exist... sadly.

I’m aware many of you reading this are not “online content creators” but we must be aware of the energy of who we are consuming from . By consuming from these ladies whose media is their master, it is easy to get caught up in their anxious toil of brand building. Your mind is being “renewed” in the negative to think of every moment, everything you do, as an opportunity to share and profit off of. This is not only NOT normal, but it’s so dangerous. Scott and I talked about it in this podcast. It’s why we believe so many women who have built online brands are now getting divorced. Building her brand at the expense of building her home (see Proverbs 14:1)

Living a slow life means to be aware of anxious toil, to not live in comparison. It means to focus on what the Lord has placed in front of you in this season and to be a good steward of it. Do you feel the peace that comes with knowing that this is what you are meant to do? Do you feel the weight of the world released from your shoulders? I know I do.

This reminds me of what I learned recently while studying Titus 2. Titus 2:4,5 says that the older women “are to be teachers of what is good and so train the younger women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.”

It says the older women are to “teach what is good” so we know that what follows is what is good. Now this is what caught my attention: the next part “train the younger women to” in Greek is the word “sōphronizōsin” which literally translates to “to make of sound mind” “to be self-controlled in mind.”

Paul writes that the older women are to help the younger women “make a sound mind” in regards to “loving their husband, loving their children, being self-controlled, pure, homemakers, kind and submissive to their own husband, that the word of God be not blasphemed(!!)” It’s like the Holy Spirit knew we women would be SO attacked in this area. The Bible is so encouraging and so powerful because it gives us access to God’s thoughts. God thinks this is good and what women are to be sound in mind about. Isn’t that amazing!

I bring this up because the difference between fast living and slow living starts with your mind, with your beliefs. We must stop and renew our mind when comparison and discontent sneaks in. Our battle is not against flesh and blood but against principalities (see Ephesians 6:12). When we hear that subtle (or sometimes not so subtle) whisper, “did God really say” (that same thing Satan said to Eve in the garden) to help and love your husband, to love your children, to be a homemaker? That this is what women are made to do?” You can answer that with a loud, “Be gone satan, I’ve got important work to do that I will not come down from” (thank you Nehemiah). We must renew our mind, or as Titus 2 puts it, be of sober/clear mind, if we are drifting away from the truth of God’s word.

And the truth is, when I go before the Lord, I will be accountable to Titus 2. Did I love my husband? Did I love my children? Did I take care of our home? Was I self controlled? Was I kind? Was I submissive to my own husband? Was I pure? So that God’s Word wasn’t blasphemed! These are my priorities.

ALL of this to say, a slow life comes with an eternal perspective. You must believe that God sees you in secret and will reward you openly (Matthew 6). Your daily choices reflect what you value. (per my favorite Lisa Graham McMinn book “Choices reflect values.”) It means you cannot compare your work to another woman’s. Because we have our own husband to help, and what it looks like to help him will be uniquely different.

A slow life to me also means I am doing things the slower way. It means I am thrifty/frugal. I am preserving and making things last. I am resourceful. I am to be prudent and economical. If we don’t have it, can I make it? Asking myself, how can I be resourceful with what I have? On a very practical level, it means being a producer of what we consume to the best of my ability and resources available to me.

I try to grow our food on the scale that I am able. I preserve the food we grow. And if we can’t grow it, how do I steward well the food we buy. I am mindful of where our food comes from. We always ask first, can we get this locally? Sometimes, this means paying more, but we believe this is loving our neighbor. We would rather keep our money in our local economy, buying from local farmers, local services, local coffee shops, where possible. Again, sometimes it’s not possible, but it’s the direction we are always moving towards.

All of this happens to be quite inconvenient. It’s why many women who work outside of the home, cannot do these things because they take time. Now, I’m aware that for everything there is a season. Everyone will have priorities that are unique to the season you are in. For example, maybe helping your husband looks like traveling with him, so you can’t have a garden. Or you have newborn twins and so you’re not able to cook from scratch as much as you’d like to right now. There’s no shame in that! I’m just giving examples of what it means to slow down. Slowing down for the twin mom could mean soaking in this precious season, and not feeling the pressure to put them into daycare and go back to work.

For the season I am in, living slow means stewarding our property by growing our food. It takes time to plant seeds, tend to them, weed, harvest and preserve. It takes time to cook from ingredients, to even know what ingredients to buy and where to buy them. It takes time to find local farmers, services, rather than conveniently buying from Amazon or big box stores. I could go on and on… having hobbies, visiting family, going for walks, getting sun in your eyes in the morning, standing barefoot in the grass, journaling, learning a new skill.

At the very beginning of this post, I referenced Jeremiah 29:5. It’s so encouraging because this was the command to a captive people… “Build houses and dwell in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit.”

To live slowly is to live faithfully. Faithfully stewarding the gifts God has given us, all to give him glory. And this draws us closer to Him. To live completely dependent upon Him. To wait upon the Lord. If we don’t have something, do we need it right now? Can we wait to see how the Lord will provide it for us? Or maybe He will show us something we already have right now that will work! This has happened to me SO many times. God cares for us. He cares for the work we are doing. We can ask Him for help with our days.

It’s a beautiful thing to live not in a hurry. It’s so freeing to know what you are called to in this season. You don’t have to follow the crazy culture of anxious toil. And you’re not lazy for it.

I hope you are encouraged today and I also encourage you to read Proverbs 31 through this lens, she was a lady who knew her priorities, her husband, her children, her home. Everything she did was for those priorities, I can’t imagine she was anxiously toiling at any of those things. “She is not afraid…” Usually anxious toil, comes from fear… fear of lack, fear of missing out. Her only “fear” was “fear of the Lord” …a reverence for Him and His ways. You cannot have both fear of the Lord and fear of man. “Choose this day, who you’re going to serve…” (see Joshua 24:15)

Scott and I always have a car book going. Right now we have two. One fiction, one non fiction. The non-fiction book we are nearly done with is called “The Occasional Writings of Isaac Moorhead; With a Sketch of His Life.” Published in 1882, with only 300 copies made, we now have one of them! We found it in a thrift store in May and the look of this old book caught our attention, it’s beautiful. Without knowing a thing about it, we bought it and started to read it.

It’s a series of essays written by Issac Morehead (1828-1881), detailing observations of his people and place. He wrote of passengers he witnessed while working as a train conductor (our favorite chapters that made us laugh imagining these stories!), to the battlegrounds he visited after civil war, to details of all the locals and streets of his home place in Erie, Pennsylvania.

It’s a slow read. But it is fascinating! It was a different world, long gone. He mentions the town crier. Imagine that, finding out all that’s going on from a man in the street shouting and ringing a bell.

Everything feels small, even down to the amount of people at that time. The access he had to battlegrounds soon after the war. Things that you don’t really think about unless reading a book like this. Like I said, it’s been slow, but it’s so interesting.

Now onto the second book we are reading. Persuasion by Jane Austen. This is my 5th Jane Austen novel, but the 4th we’ve read together. I love reading Jane Austen books because, one I think she is hilarious and I love the way her writing clearly gives you an imagination of each character. Scott on the other hand tolerates Jane Austen books =) I think because he knows how much I enjoy them, and he can drift off into other thoughts while she’s being overly detailed and still understand the plot of the story.

I also love the history you can learn while reading her books. For instance how every home/estate had a name, Kellynch Hall and Uppercross are examples from this book.

Why isn’t that a thing anymore? Well, a thing here I should say. It is a thing for my husband’s family in South Africa. They not only name their houses, but also all the different spots on their property have names:

Men are to aspire to, and be encouraged for, working their gifts, talents and domains as unto the Lord and for the good of their own people and place.

A kingdom is anywhere the king has dominion over what does and doesn’t happen.
Anywhere a king’s will is obeyed.

The OT pattern for the priesthood was 1 in 12.
Only about 8% of men should be in the Ministry Domain. The other 92% are to be God’s top guys in bringing the king’s dominion to the other Domains of Economy, Government, Politics, Media, and Academia.

A great waste of talent and energy occurs when men compete over limited ministry roles, that they are unsuited for, uncalled for, or unqualified for, rather than working energetically unto the Lord outside of the Ministry Domain.

There are different archetypes and talents, different domains of work, and infinite hierarchies (teams, organizations) trying to achieve some goal.

Our desire as men is to give our gift: to work in a hierarchy that we respect, in a domain that we think is purposeful, and with our talent that energizes us. We want other men to think that we are good at what we do.

Ultimately we want to know that God sees us, and that we are doing what He made us to do (Proverbs 16v9).

Comparison and false expectation can make us feel inconsequential, frustrated, and anxious about our purpose.

Comparing ourselves amongst ourselves, is not wise (2Corinthians 10v12). Rather we are to ponder what the Lord has made us to do, and make plans so that He can direct our steps.

Do not let bitter envy and selfish ambition (James 3v13,14) stop you from doing good work. Your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly (Matthew 6v6).

Likewise, this is why I don’t watch conservative talking ladies. The ones that say they’re Christians, but they promote emotional outrage. “Let’s take a look at what these deranged people are doing today” “Look at how crazy these people are” “Let me show you this video you’d never actually see, so I can give my two cents about this perversion” etc. etc. I have muted Allie Beth Stuckey (and she is just one example of many!) and somehow her stuff still manages to come up on my social media. It’s like the algorithm is like “you must watch this!!” Yet, I have zero interest in her opinions and see no benefit to consuming her media.

I can’t help but wonder why anyone would want to watch this type of content. Why are people so happy to click a video that is CLEARLY a panic “warning” video or an advertisement for craziness? Is it an escape? Is it a twisted form of entertainment? Is it an addiction to doom and gloom and despair? An addiction to sensationalism? Does it make people feel like they have a sense of control because they are “informed” (please note the quotes here….)?

I just googled “what is fear bait” and google says “fear bait is a manipulative tactic that uses exaggerated, misleading, or alarming headlines and content to intentionally trigger fear, anxiety, or panic.”

And that is exactly what happens… fear, anxiety, and panic. It just doesn’t stop there. That person who is full of fear, anxiety and panic, then goes to the people in their life with what they just “learned” from this online person and spreads that fear, anxiety and panic.

All of this goes COMPLETELY against God’s word! Completely.

Yes, Jesus did say “In the world you will have tribulation” but did you read what He said RIGHT before that? …. ”These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.” Peace. That we may have peace.

The verse right after the part about tribulation, did you read that? “But be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” BE OF GOOD CHEER! That is a command. Then a promise! He has already overcome the world!

Instead of living in the spiral of doom, gloom and despair, focus on the things in front of you. The things you do have “control” over. Tend to your responsibilities. Make your life beautiful. Find joy in the simple things everyday. Learn a new skill. Go outside. The Lord has created so much beauty for us to enjoy, I refuse to give my attention to media that causes fear and despair. Watch someone do something that you want to learn how to do. Recently, I have been SO fascinated with vintage broom making, and basketry. Researching videos, old books that talk about the art of weaving and broom making. It’s so interesting! There are so many interesting things we can spend our time learning and doing, why waste it on things that make you upset and can’t control anyways?

I am very proactive about muting channels on my feed. On my Youtube channel, people who are rude get muted so I never see their comments again. I have no interest in debating people in the comments section. “Bless and block” as we say in regard to rude comments.

Unfortunately, because of the videos I make, Youtube places videos along the same lines into my feed. Right now my series is Building Your Home Economy through a Well Stocked Home, so now the algorithm is putting fear based pantry stock up videos into my feed. Every single one of those channels get muted. It may sound tedious, but I think it’s worth it if I’m going to keep using youtube.

I hope this encourages you! May we take God at His Word! We bless those in our life that are filled with fear and pray for them. Pray that they will be free from the fear the devil is using to cripple them.

And declare over yourself, “I will not fear.”
