Taylor’s gone.

If you knew anything about him, then you’d know where this is going. His profound and incessant admiration for the ‘Gone Girl’ (2014) script. “This is how Gone Girl did it,” he posted a million times in the server chat. The guy even watched the movie about a psychopathic narcissist on a first date.

I don’t know if he ever got that tattoo, and I don’t know what thoughts would have been inside his skull if I’d cracked it open. In earnest, he might be disappointed that I’m the one carrying out this literary eulogy. We weren’t close, not really. Our connection was proximal, mostly confined to conversations about scriptwriting. But that was our seemingly strange, genuine connection: a shared insistence that a great script “breaks rules”. And what writer doesn’t love to see that pulled off?

Taylor’s love of the script in retrospect could make painfully perfect sense. It wasn’t just a good story; it was a mirror. It doesn’t offer redemption, just recognition. What can this dark thriller about a toxic marriage say about the hidden struggles of a scriptwriter named Taylor?

Amy is the “cool girl”—hot, successful, Ms Happy-go-lucky. Nick is the sympathetic everyman husband. Their picture-perfect marriage is a hollow performance. Beneath it all, he’s a passive-aggressive cheater, and she’s a psychopath burdened with a persona of perfection. Their despair hides as they act out versions of people they want to be rather than who they are, or a literal envoy, for the smartasses in the back. And yes, Mr. Largy, the mechanism is a metaphor, or figurative comparison. (That guy still lives rent-free in my head.)

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before…

‘When you meet someone, you don’t really meet them. You meet their representative.’

This aphorism was something I heard and repeated frequently during my dating years. It is also the central mechanism of Amy and Nick’s relationship. It’s how I saw Taylor.

He was the cool guy. Easy-going, low-maintenance, endlessly supportive. His mask of normalcy hid his struggles. Sometimes the scariest thing a story can do is make you realise you were wrong the whole time. Like many left to figure it out, I was audience to his performance. I’m flipping through script pages and old posts, searching for meaning in a world that felt arbitrary to him.

Gone Girl suggests you can never truly know another person. But how else do you perceive someone? All we get is the curated, polished, public-facing version until we’re let in, if we’re lucky enough to get a glimpse beneath the surface. That hinges on you not being too self-involved to notice when the moment arrives.

So we tell ourselves stories. We craft narratives about who we are, what we want. While we’re busy being the main character, they’re crafting their own, where you’re the disingenuous asshole too afraid to be yourself and say what you think. The tragedy is that at some point a false narrative can become so convincing that no one, including you, can see the truth.

I’m as guilty of it as anyone. It’s where my love of film derives. I watched indie movies as a kid, soaked in the dialogue, then repeated the lines as if they would have ever occurred to me. It was effective. People smiled or laughed, enforcing the performance. And if someone scoffed? So what. It wasn’t me they were rejecting. They didn’t even know me. I wasn’t being myself.

We are the ultimate chameleons of ourselves.

There is a quiet desire to perform happiness, to be effortlessly funny. When we inevitably have an off day, it feels like a disconnect from ourselves and everyone else…the facade cracks. The pressure to perform, fear of regret, and making the wrong choice is a part of the human condition, even when we’re afraid to admit it. Amy rages against being trapped in her role. Nick gets trapped by the performance, too. To pull off his counter-con, he has to match Amy’s darkness. He has to lose his soul and become the monster she needs to complete her story.

“What have we done to each other?”

Certain art touches us in a profound way. It is the vessel for our own unspoken thoughts and feelings. As a writer, there’s a feeling of being stuck in a story that transcends the page. The anxiety is isolating. It extends into late nights, wasting time and trying really fucking hard not to re-examine relationships and life choices. I end up on that writing server, talking to strangers with a similar passion, just so I don’t feel alone. Sometimes, we still fail to connect, even in a community of fellow writers.

That’s why Taylor’s love of the script makes perfect sense. The story doesn’t promise a happy ending, just an honest one. In a world demanding we lifemaxx to the max, Taylor’s greatest act of rebellion was his messy, infuriating exit. A middle finger to the glossy veneer of bullshit narratives we’re supposed to swallow without reflection. Or maybe that’s just me trying to make sense out of something that should resist narration.

“And you’re going to smile and thank me for it. Because that’s what you do. You smile and you pretend. And you know what? I’m tired of pretending. So I’m not going to anymore. This is me. This is who I am. And you’re going to love me for it.”

I imagine that line resonating with him.

His taste in film, ironically, points to the last-minute reveal. A narrative trap, our false assumptions, and his devastating reversal. He pulled off the ultimate plot twist in his final act and shook his audience out of their complacency.

I recognise that I’m making confident claims about Taylor and his motives after admitting that people are fundamentally unknowable. Using a bunch of provisional language feels like waffling when trying to interpret Taylor, so I won’t. I can’t know, but this is what I want to believe.

What to say about him? He certainly was angry.

Someone Scraped Our Database, Posted It on Reddit, and Got Treated Like a Hero.

Hi friends.

It’s been an incredibly emotional couple of days. This situation is still raw, but I want to get right to what happened.

Thursday Night: The Discovery

My head curator, Mel, notified me about a post exploding on r/Screenwriting. This was the headline:

I built a huge library of screenplays for over 11,700 movies and TV shows. I hope you’ll find it interesting and useful! Posted by MikeLumos
“Hey everyone! For years I’ve been building a collection of screenplays, and I just finished a complete rebuild of my website...”

You probably know where this is going, but stay with me. The narrative that followed was an absolute gut-punch.

Mel is a rockstar. She personally uploads and indexes a significant percentage of the scripts you find in the Script Hive database. She has been doing this for years.

When she looked at the list this user was claiming as his own, she recognized it instantly. She identified that the core of this “11,700” list was sourced directly from Script Hive.

It was undeniable. His list used her unique naming conventions, even when there were typos. He had specific scripts that only we possess, and that only we had indexed.

Mike had scraped our database.

Confirmed: The Scraping Bot

I quickly notified our developer team. I needed to be sure.

Could they verify the activity? Yes.

It turns out Mike Lumos wasn’t some anonymous hacker. He has an account on Script Hive, and a username in our Discord. The developer team verified that his most recent login to the database was July 8th, the day before he dropped “god’s gift to screenwriters” on Reddit.

I want to shout out admiral and unsquare, who not only built the Script Hive site, but work tirelessly to defend it from scrapers. THIS DELAYS THEM FROM MAKING OTHER IMPROVEMENTS TO THE SITE… THANKS HACKERS.

Before we learned how to stop people like Mike, his bot managed to scrape 9,000 scripts in a matter of days. Nine thousand scripts that took our teams of tireless volunteers TEN YEARS to collect.

The Hero’s Welcome

Meanwhile, Mike’s Reddit post was in overdrive. Thousands of upvotes. Hundreds of comments. Redditors were “… dick riding him to the sky, karma farm”, as Discord member VRAXX so delicately put it. ;)

The comments hurt the most. People were treating him like he had personally single-handedly preserved film history. Look at what people were saying:

JBBfromPG: “Incredible!! Thank you!!”
Chadder-Cheeze: “This is amazing. Thank you!”
sparrowhawkward: “The second coming of Drew’s Script-o-Rama”
roqqingit: “GOAT!!!”

They thought they were thanking a solitary, hard-working creator who spent years building something from scratch.

The Claims and the Reality

Mike didn’t take time. He used AI to scrape. He used automated tools to steal a decade of human effort. Then, he had the absolute audacity to say:

“...it now has over 11,700 movie and TV scripts, more than any other site that I’m aware of.”

Script Hive has 26,660. You have an active account there, Mike. You were aware.

“A few things that I think make it nicer than the alternatives: Everything is completely free (no signup required, no paywalls, no nonsense).”

We’re also completely free. We also have no paywalls. Which you also knew.

“This is a personal passion project and I’m actively improving it”

A personal passion project. It makes me feel physically ill.

Many people contribute to Script Hive. What Mike took credit for doesn’t just hurt me personally. It hurts the community that built this resource. It hurts the VIP members who contribute to the Patreon. It hurts the curators who scour the internet daily, sometimes even personally scanning hard copies of screenplays to add them to the digital collective. It hurts the indexers who sit and manually, one by one, add metadata like writer names, draft dates, and story credits to make our database easy to search for other writers. This hurts the countless people who email me scripts as they find them, because they trust Script Hive as a trusted educational resource.

Script Hive has been a labor of love for 10 YEARS.

And Mike was being lauded as a HERO.

The Ouch Factor: No Film School

Gah, that hurts. No Film School caught wind of the thread. They were actually preparing to write an article about the database that stole from us.

Ouch.

The reality check hit me: We once emailed No Film School politely asking them to add Script Hive to their list of screenplay resources. They never even responded. Now, they were about to promote the thief.

It’s upsetting how many people just don’t know that Script Hive exists. I can’t blame writers for that. I have probably been too careful about protecting this resource over the years. I’ve focused on the quality of the database, the accuracy of the information (unlike Mike…many of his automated links brought up the wrong screenplay, but hey, he automated movie posters!).

I focused on the strength of our community rather than marketing.

Turning a Negative into a Positive

The community on Discord (and my family) helped me get through this. It was a very upsetting experience, but talking about it in our VIP only channel was therapeutic.

But they didn’t just provide comfort; they provided action. They went into the Reddit thread and started pointing out the truth.

The Discord community helped me find Mike’s contact info so I could ensure all his emails were blacklisted from our database. (This doesn’t stop him from using VPNs, but we have implemented far better measures to prevent automated scraping now).

I emailed Jason from No Film School. I requested that when he writes that article, he consider crediting Script Hive, since the majority of the scripts came directly from us. Understandably, Jason didn’t want to get caught in the middle of a messy internet dispute. But he agreed that what Mike did was wrong. He shared in my righteous anger. He decided not to write the article about Mike’s site.

In fact, he offered to write an article about Script Hive instead! Score!

This situation made me realize we need to completely overhaul our marketing plan. Too many people are unaware of Script Hive. Our social media accounts are getting zero traction. We are listed as a resource on the Writer’s Guild Foundation page and a few other blogs, but that is clearly not enough.

The community has been reaching out to me with some great ideas on how we can spread the word, like reaching out to film and writing professors. If you have ideas, I would love to hear them! The positive outcome is that I feel invigorated to CHANGE our marketing. This whole situation forced me to realize we needed to do this.

Mike Reaches Out

Remember I told you he’s in our Discord? Well, he sent me a direct message admitting to the whole thing:

I checked his site to confirm, and he did indeed pull down the 9,000 scripts.

However, he did NOT take down his Reddit post, nor did he update it to tell the thousands of people upvoting him where the data actually came from. The “hero” narrative remained live on the homepage of the subreddit…and was steadily rising.

Saturday, July 11th: A Damn Good Day

Then, the Reddit moderators stepped in.

They looked at the evidence, removed the post entirely, and BANNED Mike from the screenwriting subreddit.

Okay, gotta admit, I wasn’t expecting quick justice, but it felt damn good.

Thank you, Reddit mods. I’m sure that was an interesting conversation to have behind the scenes. After all, neither myself nor Mike own any of these materials. It’s about the time put into collecting everything into one place. So on behalf of the entire Script Hive community, including curators, indexers, moderators, developers, and VIP members: Thank you.

And to [REDACTED REAL NAME].... Fuck you!

UPDATE (7/14/26): Mike pleaded for me to remove his real name and email. He has removed his site completely and taken a beating on Reddit, so after waiting a few days, I decided to do that. Perhaps it’s the Canadian in me…

Script Hive is Alive!

Dear Script Hive Community,

After a grueling 6-7 months, beta-testing has completed and the new Script Hive database is here! Technically we launched around November 8th, but I’m calling it a soft launch since it wasn’t very publicized. I only notified the people who previously had access to the old database, because the old one is officially GONE. This means no more Google Drive, google groups, Awesometable, google sites, google forms… Bye bye Google!

Our VIP members did a great job helping us beta-test the new site and even suggested some cool new features just for them, like dark mode, favoriting scripts and unlimited downloads.

Our team of indexers finally, FINALLY has been able to start playing catch up and has begun the tedious (yet fun?) process of indexing all the scripts that were weighing down my laptop, waiting to be added. I’m not kidding when I say I’ve had so many scripts on my laptop I could barely use it for anything else. And yes, I tried moving them all onto Onedrive, and that created a whole other can of problems for me.

But I digress. The # of scripts in the database has already increased to well over 23k and it is swiftly going up. I think we’ve earned our shiny new meta description:

Script Hive is the world’s largest free library of professional film and TV scripts, created for screenwriters to study and learn for educational purposes. Because scripts should be free. #ReadTheMovies

I hesitate to write more because I know no one reads this (except Discord member Matt) but speaking of Discord, I just want to point out one of the main differences with our new database is that it does NOT require a Discord membership. Anyone can create an account at https://scripthive.com and they don’t have to join our (awesome) community on Discord. They don’t have to be active a certain amount of days per month. In fact, they don’t even have to have a Google email. So it’s really hassle free!

A Word From Rob & Our Dev Team

Hi Hivers!

So, a little story…

Back in March 2025, the Google application that updated the Script Hive database started randomly failing. After some investigation, I realized it had hit a limit and was able to temporarily increase that limit. However, I soon realized that with the huge amount of screenplays Smish and team were adding, we’d reach an even harder limit within six months or so.

That’s when we set out to replace the previous database with something more future-proof and scaleable. Initially, we set out to simply replace the old database, however since we moved to our own custom site we realized there were a lot of asks that could be answered, and pain points that could be healed.

As the scope increased, we took on additional developers, to not just replace the old site, but to make something better, faster, stronger, and with 100% more oomph. A wave of volunteers reached out to help us accelerate toward our goal (and against our deadline!)

A tremendous thanks to Unsquare, who took up the reigns as I started to get pulled into other work and life commitments. Without him, we would have released with far fewer features, or months later.

About Unsquare:

“Unsquare began coding at a young age when he taught himself BASIC on his family's Apple IIgs. He should probably write more.”

Also big thanks to Lucas, who did a lot of the backend work, to make sure that the site was scalable, speedy, and secure for our users.

About Lucas:

“Lucas Ulmer is a passionate web developer for a long time. He likes exploring the possibilities offered by both frontend and backend languages. Apart from programming, Lucas is also a great moviegoer and writes short movies.”

We also had many other developers assisting us. Jim, Jim-Frank, Vaso, Nolan, Sproj, and Nickman, who all helped with various parts of the development. Bios below if provided:

Jim: “Jim Hodgson found learning REACT easier than writing this sentence.”

Nolan: “Nolan is a Philadelphia-based writer currently developing a coming-of-age screenplay and a courtroom legal drama stage play. (He’s also in grad school studying political science, communication, and statistics/data science.)”

Also a huge shout out to National, who was critical in the migration from the old database to the new one. And of course Smish and the various testers who helped us cinch up the site and fix bugs.

Oh and I gotta take this chance to hustle myself…

About me: “Rob Bailey is a senior technical consultant for a SaaS company but he’d rather be a screenwriter. When he’s not doing javascript/sql/react/typescript or whatever, he’s probably writing comedy for Hard Times. He’s also a screenwriter who writes out-of-this-world characters in scifi and comedy.”

Buried Alive in Scripts: The Secret Struggle Behind Script Hive

What it feels like to be buried in scripts.

Sometimes I can’t sleep at night.

Not because of horror movies, not because of deadlines—but because there are over a thousand unindexed scripts sitting on my hard drive, waiting to be uploaded to the Hive. Every day, our amazing team of curators uncovers more—specs that have resurfaced after sites like The Tracking Board shut down, rare finds that would’ve otherwise disappeared forever. They scoop them up, and the pile gets bigger.

Meanwhile, a brand-new database is being built by our volunteer coders. It’s exciting, but the timeline keeps me up: When will it be ready? When can we start indexing those thousand scripts? Will users even like it?

Sometimes I think about yanking the current database offline, just to make everyone feel how massive this rebuild is. To show how much invisible labor and stress goes into keeping this archive alive. But I can’t—we have too many paying patrons, too many writers who rely on us.

So I keep going. Drowning in PDFs, juggling curators and coders, whispering to myself that the sleepless nights will be worth it.

Because one thing is certain: Script Hive isn’t just growing—it’s evolving, in real time, with every script we save.

But yeah, the new database Version 1.0 will be ready for beta testing soon. Guess who will get to see it first? (Spoiler, it’s our Patrons).

I’m Anna, a fellow writer, and frequent user of the Script Hive database. With each newsletter, I will bring you user friendly tips and tricks on navigating the database. At first glance, it can be overwhelming, but I am here to pull back the curtain…

As we await a brand new database… and trust me it’s worth the wait, I promise…the Script Hive database has plenty of awesome feature screenplays, television scripts, look books, and much more, to keep you busy reading.

As screenwriters, we read script after script trying to capture the skillful writing of those who came before, but how did it all begin? You can find outlines, bibles, treatments, or look books on the database and see how a film evolved from the initial iteration to what we see on the screen.

❄️ The much lauded Fargo Bible by The Coen Brothers! You betcha, yeah! It’s been passed around film schools, analyzed and used as an example of a perfect bible. But why is it so highly regarded? The vision was meticulously laid out through the tone, visuals, and the Midwestern mood. It offers a close look into how they crafted the arc of the perfect crime spree.

🌸 For a more visual example of a pitch deck, look into the wild mind of Ari Aster, and check out the pitch deck for Midsommar. He goes in depth on style, the psychedelic approach, and the character breakdowns. Mostly it is visually appealing and is a great example of how a world can be built from the pitch.

🤓 A bit of a different take than these other two, but a classic example of a show bible… you can also find the show bible for the short lived, but iconic, Freaks and Geeks written by Paul Feig. Unlike Midsommar, this bible is a lot of text, but there is a reason it is used as a brilliant example of a show bible. The extensive break down of each character, story arcs, and intricacies of high school life shows what it looks like when a creator really knows the story they are telling. If only it lasted more than one season…

To find treatments, bibles, or lookbooks on the database, just simply go to ‘category’ then ‘other’. OR type the show name into the search…

No New Scripts, Just 1000+ in Limbo

Hey Hive,

Bad news first: No new scripts were added to the database this month. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

Good news? We’ve got over 1,000 ready to go — just waiting to be indexed. Why the delay? Because indexing each script (title, writer, draft date, fun bits, etc.) is still a manual process handled by a small squad of heroic volunteers who are… mostly busy being writers. As they should be.

But don’t panic:

We’re building a better, faster database.
We’re bringing on a fresh team of indexers.
And we just recruited a whole gang of coders from Discord after no one (literally no one) responded to our call for help on Substack. So thanks for that.

Big shoutout to our mod Admiral who’s been leading the tech team between jaunts to Sweden. New coders are already squashing bugs and pushing updates like champs. Welcome to the Hive, you mystery wizards.

Behind the Scenes: Database Progress

Our new database is coming along nicely. The team’s been hard at work squashing bugs, improving mobile compatibility, and making sure it works beautifully across all browsers.

We also have a new developer on board: Nolan, a Script Hive community member and Substack reader who offered to help build the next-gen platform. Welcome to the team, Nolan!

We’ve started beta testing the new indexers dashboard — that’s the internal tool our team uses to manually enter info like title, writer, draft date, and more. It’s all part of the plan to make the new Script Hive Database easier to use, prettier to look at, and more powerful for you.

What If… Script Hive Had Lists?

I’ve been thinking — wouldn’t it be cool if you could favorite scripts or make custom lists, like a Goodreads or Letterboxd for screenplays? ❤️

The developers (volunteers, remember) tell me this could add up to 16 hours of work.

In last month’s newsletter, I directed you to scripts written by Wes Anderson, Celine Song, and Ryan Coogler, celebrated screenwriters. It’s of course important to read scripts of this nature, to study the craft…blah blah blah… but the Script Hive Database is so expansive in its selection that sometimes 166 episodes of Supernatural can be helpful to revisit when you’re stuck on an idea. Well, you don’t have to read all 166 but poke around and check out the television scripts on the database, they just might unlock some creativity for you…

✏️ As mentioned above part of this month’s script drop was the lauded episode of The White Lotus 3x05 - Full-Moon Party. What an episode! That definitely sets up for some interesting moments in the show. And Mike White is a fantastic writer! Check it out to not only see the episode come together but to read the brilliance of the writing on the page.

✏️ If you can keep going after a The White Lotus script, check out Buffy the Vampire Slayer 🗡️🩸. Script Hive has several scripts across seasons and with the reboot recently being announced, it can be a good resource to look back on the shows that are getting new life.

Hey friends,

Hard to believe it’s already been a month. Time flies when you’re cataloguing scripts and yelling into the void about metadata.

Let’s get into it.

Coverfly Is Shutting Down

If you’re in the screenwriting world, you’ve probably already heard: Coverfly is going dark. Gone. Poof. Off to the big Red List in the sky.

Does this affect us? Not really.
Does it affect the writers we serve? Absolutely.

Coverfly was more than a submission portal. It was a validation machine, a connector, a badge factory, and a career springboard. Those little “Top 1%” accolades? The writer profile pages? The free script swap system? Those mattered — especially to writers working in isolation, trying to get better, trying to get seen.

But more than the tools, what I’ll really miss is the people.

Mark. Scot. Tom. Delenn. Alex. Maggie.

I’ve had the privilege of working with a bunch of them over the years — from the early days of Script Hive’s “Public Domain Contest” (yep, we used Coverfly to accept those entries) to the launch and growth of Killer Shorts.

Not our strongest month for script adds. We logged a measly 143 new scripts, bringing the total to 21,752. Oops. Guess our curators were too busy mourning Coverfly. Or watching Yellowjackets. Hard to say.

A Little Hive Rant

Quick sidebar: you know what makes me want to scream into my keyboard?
When someone pops into our Discord and says:

“Anyone know where I can find the script for Magazine Dreams?”

And another helpful soul replies:

📝 Smish Happens: Database Diaries

Hey friends,

It’s your monthly update from me, Smish, typing to you from beneath an avalanche of screenplays. Seriously. There are so many screenplays. If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be spending this much time wrangling PDFs and tagging draft dates, I’d have smiled politely and then gone to cry in a corner. But here we are—and Script Hive has taken over a sizable portion of my life. The good news? That means I’ve got plenty to update you on for the foreseeable future.

📚 A Rich, Paper-Cut-Prone Harvest

Last month alone, we added over 727 new screenplays to the database. Seven. Hundred. That’s a lot of scripts, folks. We are absolutely thriving in storyland.

Massive thanks to our team of curators, who are working tirelessly (and voluntarily!) to find the good stuff and keep the archive fresh, exciting, and weirdly well-organized. Some personal highlights from this batch included The Substance - Lookbook, Sleeping with the Enemy, Funny Girl, Earth Girls are Easy, Van Helsing, Sausage Party, and of course, multiple episodes of She-Ra: Princess of Power, but honestly? The whole collection is a goldmine.

💌 Engagement Is My Love Language

Now, let’s talk about something that’s a little hard to say: engagement. This project can sometimes feel a bit like yelling into the void—a void filled with writers and readers quietly downloading scripts without saying a word. Which is totally fine! I get it! But every once in a while, someone hits that little HEART emoji on one of my Substack posts or leaves a kind comment, and I swear it powers me for a full 48 hours.

So if you’ve ever appreciated a script drop or gotten excited about a title, don’t be shy! Your ❤️s and messages really, truly mean the world to me (and the rest of the team). Validation is the fuel of the internet, after all.

Behind the scenes, we’ve been building a shiny new database—something sleeker, easier to use, and much easier to maintain (my tired little fingers are so excited).

Major shoutout to admiral and his mysterious associate Jim, who has quietly boarded the S.S. Script Hive and is now helping us realize our database dreams. I don’t know who Jim is. But I trust him. He feels like a Jim who gets things done.

No more waiting for a mod to approve your request. Once you verify your email, boom—you’re in. This also frees up our beloved Taylor to do other very important things. (Like get more tattoos. Or more work for me. Wahahaha.)
No More Required Discord Membership
This one’s big. Really big. We’re aiming to make the database available to anyone who requests access (and verifies their email), no Discord required. That means no more worrying about “The Purge,” no more staying active in a chat server just to keep access. It still stays private (for legal reasons), but becomes much more open and welcoming.

This part is important: I’m not here to gatekeep scripts I didn’t write. I don’t own them. I’ve always believed that screenplays should be free to access for educational purposes. And while Discord membership was once a legal safeguard, we think we’ve found a better way to keep things both private and accessible.

So when the new system is ready—and it’s not yet, so don’t go refreshing—Script Hive will be even more open, more usable, and more aligned with our core belief:

If you’re stuck on your own script, it can be helpful to analyze produced scripts, lookbooks, or bibles as reference, and Script Hive is a great place to start. With Script Hive being one of the largest, most accessible script databases, with over 20,000+ scripts, navigating its features could get daunting.

It’s actually pretty easy to navigate, using the drop down menus and filters to find scripts by format, years added, specific lists the script was found on, or search by title or writer. Script Hive also offers updated drafts of a script so you can see how things change draft to draft. Are you trying to figure out how to structure your screenplay, or what the finished script looks like when it’s produced? You can scroll through the database and see how your favorite writers did it.

Some cool features…

✏️ You can search by Industry List — If you’re looking to submit to the Academy Nicholls Fellowship, you can find a list of fellowship winning scripts for reference.

✏️ Scripts can be filtered based on Draft Date and Dates Added. You can adjust the dropdown menu to see the latest scripts added or learn from the oldest script we have in the database, going back to 1931.

✏️ Included in the most recent script drop is the lookbook for THE SUBSTANCE! On the database, you can check out how Coralie Fargeat went from lookbook to script to screen.

Hey everyone,

Smish here with your monthly update on the Script Hive screenplay database!

This was supposed to be an exciting month. We brought in a whole new group of volunteer indexers, which meant scripts would get filed faster. I was gearing up to drop a huge update—more scripts, better accuracy, fewer duplicates...

But, well, that didn’t quite happen.

Still, there’s good news! We added 110 new screenplays to the database this month, and they’ve all been indexed. So let’s celebrate that win! 🎉

So, what went wrong?

#1: Life happened.

Most of our new volunteers got busy (no shade, it happens!), and out of four or five indexers, only one was able to help. Which meant… we were right back where we started—one person doing all the work.

#2: Our code broke.

And not just a little. Catastrophic failure.

I’m no programmer, but here’s the gist: A long time ago, a very smart college student wrote a script to help automate part of our database updates. It didn’t do everything—humans still had to manually check writer names, draft dates, and industry lists—but it made things a lot easier.

Then we hit 20,000+ screenplays, and the system just… stopped. The code couldn’t handle the load anymore. And the original coder? They did it as a class project and aren’t even on our Discord.

The Temporary Fix & What’s Next

Thankfully, one of our mods knows their way around code and managed to patch things up for now. But we know we need a permanent solution.

So that’s our new mission:

🗄️ A new database.
🧑‍💻 A new system.
☀️ A better way to bring you scripts—one that’s stable, searchable, and frequently updated.

Right now, I’m staring at a folder of 400+ screenplays waiting to be indexed with no clear plan on how to get them in. It’s stressful. But it’s also exciting. Because this is the turning point. The growing pains we’re experiencing now are pushing us toward something better.

A better process. A better Script Hive.

Road to the Black List: March Writer’s Workshop with Reynaldo Leal

This past month, the Workshop hosted an inspiring talk on the Discord server with Reynaldo Leal, a proud Marine Corps veteran and rising screenwriter whose riveting prehistoric adventure, A BAND OF WOLVES, earned a coveted spot on the 2024 Black List.

Reynaldo recounted his unique path to the industry, from growing up as the son of first-generation Mexican immigrant parents to serving in some of the fiercest combat of the Iraq War in Fallujah, to discovering a passion for visual storytelling through photojournalism.

The concept for A BAND OF WOLVES emerged one night as Rey relaxed at home with his family’s English Mastiff:

“Why doesn't this thing eat us? She's gigantic. She's bigger than my kid. She's bigger than my wife. But she loves us. And I started wondering where does that love come from? There have been other stories where this relationship was about eating and convenience and companionship. But I wanted to go deeper into what feeling is more powerful than fear and hunger, that could make two predatory species come together. And I settled in with a mother's love.”

Seeing the first act vividly in his mind, Reynaldo plunged into the draft, quickly banging out twenty-five pages with no outline at all. Several of those key scenes are still in the script to this day. Once he reached the critical birth scene, he paused to map out an outline, then powered through to the finish line.

The script sat untouched for a while, but when even his harshest critic, Reynaldo’s wife, passionately connected with the story, he knew he had something special. After professional script analysis and an intensive rewrite, he rolled the dice and paid to host it on the Black List website. The first evaluation scored an impressive eight out of ten, earning two free evaluations, each also scoring an eight, unlocking even more evaluations. Five consecutive “eights” later, Reynaldo received a polite email informing him he'd reached the limit on free evaluations, and A BAND OF WOLVES secured a permanent, free spot on the Black List website.

"I'm in the Writers Guild Foundation Veterans Writing Project, and I reach out to my mentor Clay [Frohman] (Defiance, Under Fire)—I'm like, what the heck does this mean? He says it means you need to start looking for a manager."

After querying 200 managers listed on IMDb Pro, only three replied. One passed immediately due to the genre, another requested the script but ghosted him, and then finally, he received an encouraging late-October reply from Derrick Eppich at Empirical Evidence.

Thrilled with the script, Derrick promptly signed Reynaldo and sent him on a whirlwind tour of his first ever general meetings. Barely a month later, Reynaldo was in the middle of one of these sessions when the Black List announcement dropped, his phone lighting up with congratulatory texts. In a blink, Reynaldo had rocketed from hopeful query emails to sitting in an industry meeting as a fully repped professional on the Black List with some serious heat!

A Faster, More Searchable Database

Maintaining a database of over 20,772 screenplays is no small task. Until recently, all indexing was done by one person (our amazing moderator Taylor), manually inputting script titles, writer names, draft dates, and other metadata so users could search by these details. Here’s a video that gives an idea of what’s involved:

To speed up this process, we’ve expanded our team of volunteer indexers, who are now working to:

Correct mistitled files
Fill in missing search parameters
Ensure newly added scripts are indexed faster

This means more accurate searches, faster access to scripts, and a smoother experience for everyone. Inside the February Writer’s Workshop with Arun Croll: Bringing Personal Truths to the Page

If you weren’t at our February 22 session of the Workshop, you missed a memorable conversation with Arun Croll, long-time Hive member and a breakout screenwriter who has now been featured on The Black List twice. Between a Netflix development deal and consecutive Black List honors for THE LIGHT AT THE END (2023) and ROAD TO COLD VALLEY (2024), his scripts have been turning the heads of major producers and development execs.

Arun pulled back the curtain on his writing process, showing how great conflict comes naturally when you’re working through something real in your writing:

I took these different parts of my mind and parts of my family and externalized them in these characters. That’s where some of the differentiation [of the character voices] comes from. When I base a relationship or a character on something going on in my life—something I’m not totally at peace with—the conflict is already there and it’s authentic. You’re not manufacturing it because Save the Cat says to do it on page 30.

Another eye-opening takeaway was the idea that chasing commercial appeal can sometimes strip a script of the very emotional depth that makes it marketable. Road to Cold Valley was initially written as a straight thriller with the family history woven in through flashbacks. But readers weren’t connecting to the characters. The turning point came when Arun restructured the first act to play out this family drama before escalating into the thriller elements:

I definitely was writing under the pressure of trying to get to the action as quickly as possible. And, you know, it’s funny—the idea of writing something ‘commercial.’ Nobody really knows what that means. You want to write something commercial, so you get to the action fast, and now you've got a bunch of action with characters nobody cares about and nobody wants to buy it. Is that commercial?
