And this isn’t just a new website.

I’ve spent the last several months watching this community grow into something much bigger than I ever expected. What started as me posting about politics and trying to make sense of the chaos has grown into an independent media platform with hundreds of thousands of people following along, access to local leaders and elected officials, on-the-ground reporting here in Seattle, interviews, breaking news coverage, and a community that genuinely gives a damn about what is happening around us.

I realized Cup of Culture needed a home built for what it is becoming.

So I built one.

Good morning. I’m Sean Bartley, and this is your Morning Cup.

We’re getting closer to the midterms, and the political environment is starting to feel less like background noise and more like the ground actually shifting beneath Washington.

Trump is facing ugly polling. Progressives are stacking victories that establishment Democrats were told were impossible. ICE continues expanding an enforcement machine that deserves far more scrutiny. And here in Washington, some incredibly close races are reminding us that every single vote actually does matter.

Here are the five stories I’m watching this morning.

1. The national debt just crossed $40 TRILLION

The United States has officially crossed another staggering milestone: $40 trillion in national debt.

And politically, this matters.

Republicans have spent decades presenting themselves as the party of fiscal responsibility, usually while demanding cuts to programs working people actually depend on. Yet the debt has continued climbing under Donald Trump.

So the next time somebody tells you we simply “can’t afford” healthcare, housing assistance, public transit, education or stronger social programs, remember what our government somehow always manages to find money for.

The argument in Washington has never really been whether America spends money.

It’s about who we decide is worth spending it on.

2. Newly released emails reveal cooperation between ICE and Iran

This is one of the stories I think deserves much more attention.

Newly released emails show that U.S. immigration officials maintained a quiet channel with Iranian officials that helped facilitate deportation flights of Iranian nationals beginning in 2025.

That deserves serious scrutiny, especially as the Trump administration continues dramatically expanding immigration enforcement.

Meanwhile, closer to home, DHS has recently been searching for a large, ready-to-use detention facility in the Seattle area, while questions remain about ICE’s future involvement with the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma.

Seattle and Washington need to be paying very close attention to what the federal government is building here.

This isn’t theoretical anymore.

3. Progressives are winning, and people are finally noticing

There is a political story developing underneath all the Trump chaos that might become one of the defining stories of 2026.

Progressive candidates keep winning.

Robert Reich writes today about what he sees as the decline of corporate Democrats, pointing specifically toward victories by candidates including Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and Angie Nixon, despite enormous spending from establishment and corporate-backed forces against progressive campaigns.

Nixon’s upset Senate primary victory is drawing national attention in its own right.

I’ve been saying this for a while now: people aren’t rejecting progressive politics.

They’re rejecting politics that doesn’t materially improve their lives.

Affordable housing. Healthcare. Higher wages. Strong unions. Getting corporate money out of politics. Making billionaires actually pay taxes.

These aren’t fringe ideas.

They’re increasingly becoming the foundation of a political movement.

And November is going to tell us just how powerful that movement has become.

4. Trump has a midterm problem

Donald Trump has plenty of reasons to be nervous about November.

The battle for Congress is tightening as Republicans try to protect their majorities, and Trump’s own political standing has deteriorated. One recent poll put his approval rating at just 33%, a second-term low in that survey.

The stakes couldn’t be much higher.

Control of Congress determines whether Trump’s administration gets another two years with limited congressional resistance or suddenly faces Democratic-controlled committees, subpoenas, investigations and legislative roadblocks.

That’s why these midterms aren’t simply another election cycle.

They’re potentially the first major national check on Trump’s second presidency.

And every special election, primary and congressional poll between now and November is another little piece of that battlefield.

5. A Washington election is headed for a recount because FOUR votes separate the candidates

If anybody ever tells you their vote doesn’t matter, send them this story.

A Democratic Washington state Senate primary is headed toward a recount after the candidates fighting for second place finished just four votes apart.

Four.

Not four thousand.

Four votes.

It’s the kind of race that should permanently destroy the idea that individual votes don’t matter, particularly in local and state elections.

And Washington’s broader primary results have also contained warning signs for Republicans. Analysis of the results suggests GOP candidates here are facing significant headwinds connected to Trump’s presidency.

That makes Washington another place worth watching closely as November approaches.

THE BOTTOM LINE

There’s a temptation right now to look at American politics and see nothing except chaos.

I understand it.

But underneath that chaos, something else is happening.

Progressives are winning races they were supposedly incapable of winning. Corporate money isn’t guaranteeing victories. Trump’s approval numbers are struggling. Republicans are staring down an increasingly consequential midterm election. And races decided by literally a handful of votes are showing us exactly why participation matters.

The political ground is moving.

The question now is whether we organize fast enough to move with it.

And while all of that is happening, another round of elections today will give us a fresh look at where voters are heading ahead of November.

TRUMP WANTS TO RESTRICT MAIL-IN VOTING. HE JUST VOTED BY MAIL.

You genuinely cannot make this shit up.

The White House is defending Donald Trump after reports that he voted by mail in Florida’s Republican primary, even as Trump continues pushing Congress for new restrictions on mail voting and repeating baseless claims about widespread fraud.

The White House says Trump qualifies because he primarily lives in Washington while remaining a Florida resident.

Cool.

But that’s exactly the point.

Voting by mail is a completely legitimate way for Americans who cannot conveniently appear at a polling place to participate in democracy. Trump apparently understands that perfectly well when the person benefiting from it is Donald Trump.

The problem was never that voting by mail doesn’t work.

The problem is that millions of other Americans get to use it too.

TRUMP’S APPROVAL RATING JUST HIT 33%

This one matters heading into November.

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll puts Trump’s approval rating at just 33%, the lowest of his current presidency. Sixty-four percent disapprove.

His approval has fallen from 35% earlier this month, with the Iran war and its economic consequences weighing heavily on voters. The conflict has disrupted global oil trade and helped drive gasoline prices higher.

Republicans now have to walk into the midterms defending congressional majorities while their president is sitting at roughly one-third approval.

That doesn’t guarantee Democrats anything.

But it absolutely creates an opening.

And the question remains whether Democrats are prepared to actually use it.

🚨 ICE COULD BE LOOKING TO BUY DETENTION FACILITIES, INCLUDING POSSIBLY TACOMA

This is the story I’m watching closest here at home.

GEO Group, the private prison company that operates the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, says it expects to begin negotiations with ICE over potentially selling some of its detention facilities directly to the federal government.

We don’t yet know whether Tacoma is included.

But here’s the part that should get everyone’s attention:

ICE recently sought information about purchasing ready-to-operate detention facilities in several states, including a facility in Washington near Seattle.

Those locations reportedly line up with facilities GEO already owns.

So instead of merely contracting with private companies to operate parts of the immigration detention system, ICE could potentially become the outright owner of some of these facilities.

Given everything happening with immigration enforcement right now, Washington needs to be watching this extremely closely.

This isn’t some distant national immigration story.

This is happening in our backyard.

ELECTION DAY AGAIN

Three states are holding primaries today, including a major election in Florida.

Florida voters are choosing nominees for governor and U.S. Senate while also voting under newly redrawn congressional districts pushed through by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Those maps are designed to give Republicans an advantage in 24 of Florida’s 28 congressional districts.

Alaska is also voting today in its top-four primary, along with Wyoming.

Every election between now and November is another piece of evidence about the political environment we’re heading into.

And with control of Congress hanging in the balance, I’m watching turnout just as closely as I’m watching who wins.

TRUMP IS ONCE AGAIN BETTING ON HIS PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH KIM JONG UN

Trump says North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has responded to his efforts to restart talks, although neither Trump nor the White House has provided details about what that supposed response actually was.

This comes after Trump ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce joint military exercises with South Korea, describing North Korea as “unthreatening and respectful.”

Meanwhile, North Korea has significantly strengthened its relationship with Russia since Trump and Kim last met, including providing military support connected to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Trump continues to approach international diplomacy as if personal relationships between powerful men can substitute for long-term foreign policy.

We’ve seen this movie before.

The first Trump-Kim diplomatic experiment produced historic photographs and extraordinary television.

It did not produce North Korean denuclearization.

Now we’re apparently gearing up for the sequel.

THE BOTTOM LINE

There is a pretty clear theme running through this morning.

Trump wants Americans suspicious of mail voting while using it himself.

His approval rating is collapsing while Republicans desperately try to hold Congress.

ICE continues building out an immigration detention and enforcement apparatus that could become even more directly controlled by the federal government.

And voters are already heading back to the polls.

We are getting closer to November every single day.

There is going to be an enormous amount of noise between now and then. There will be scandals, distractions, manufactured outrage and probably approximately 47 things every morning that make us ask whether reality has finally developed a software bug.

Don’t lose sight of the bigger picture.

Organize.

Pay attention to your local races.

Support candidates who actually represent your values.

Talk to people who aren’t permanently plugged into political news.

And vote.

Because eventually the timeline stops being the timeline.

Eventually, we get to answer back.

While the country is watching ICE raids, masked agents, detention centers and the daily chaos coming out of the Trump administration, something much bigger is happening quietly in the background.

And nearly one million people could be caught in it.

The Trump administration has moved to terminate Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, for immigrants from 13 countries, according to a recent Pew Research Center analysis.

This deserves far more attention than it is getting.

What is TPS?

Temporary Protected Status allows people from certain countries experiencing war, natural disasters or other extraordinary conditions to remain legally in the United States when returning home would be unsafe.

People with TPS can receive protection from deportation and authorization to work in the United States.

These aren’t simply people who crossed the border yesterday.

Many TPS holders have built lives here. They work here. They have families here. They have communities here.

And now the federal government is attempting to remove those protections on an enormous scale.

Look at the bigger picture.

We’ve spent months watching individual immigration stories explode across our feeds.

An ICE raid happens.

Someone is detained.

A family gets separated.

A disturbing video surfaces.

Another lawsuit gets filed.

Then the news cycle moves on.

But when you put those stories together with what is happening to TPS, a much more alarming picture begins to emerge.

The administration isn’t simply increasing immigration enforcement.

It is potentially creating an enormous new population of people who could lose legal protections and become vulnerable to deportation.

At the same time, the immigration detention system itself is facing increasingly serious scrutiny.

Reuters reported earlier this summer that the death rate inside ICE detention facilities had more than doubled under Trump.

The ACLU has also announced dozens of federal legal claims involving allegations of abuse by immigration agents across the country.

Now combine that with potentially hundreds of thousands of people losing protections they previously had.

That’s the story.

This isn’t happening in isolation.

There is a tendency in political media to cover Trump administration actions individually.

One executive action becomes a headline.

One court ruling becomes another.

One ICE operation becomes another.

But authoritarian systems aren’t built through one dramatic announcement.

They’re built through infrastructure.

They’re built by changing who the government considers legally protected.

They’re built by expanding enforcement power.

They’re built by testing that power in court.

They’re built by making extraordinary government actions feel ordinary because we’re seeing something new every single day.

And that’s why TPS matters.

We cannot only pay attention when someone gets dragged into an ICE vehicle on camera.

We also have to pay attention to the policy decisions that determine who can be put in that vehicle in the first place.

Nearly one million people potentially losing humanitarian protections should be national news.

Instead, it’s happening while most Americans are watching something else.

And we need to start connecting these dots before the consequences become impossible to ignore.

Independent media matters because stories like this deserve more than one news cycle.

We’re starting this Monday with a lot happening at once: Trump is making a major shift in U.S. policy toward North Korea, ICE could be looking to take greater control of the detention center in Tacoma, Washington caregivers are fighting over wages, and last week’s primaries are still telling us something important about where Democratic voters are headed.

Let’s get into it.

Trump orders major reduction in military exercises with South Korea

I posted about this on threads and instagram yesterday…

This one deserves significantly more attention.

Donald Trump has instructed the Pentagon to “substantially reduce” joint U.S. military exercises with South Korea, according to Reuters. The decision comes as South Korea’s government pushes for renewed talks with North Korea and a potential long-term peace arrangement.

Diplomacy with North Korea is not inherently a bad thing. Reducing tensions on the Korean Peninsula should absolutely be a goal.

But dramatically changing America’s military posture while Trump continues reshaping U.S. relationships with authoritarian governments deserves scrutiny.

Especially because this isn’t happening in isolation.

South Korea and the United States had been preparing for their annual joint military exercises, which are designed around readiness against threats from North Korea.

The question isn’t whether we should pursue peace.

We should.

The question is what Trump is giving up, what he’s getting in return, and whether America’s allies are actually part of that decision-making process.

That distinction matters.

🚨 ICE could be preparing for a major change in Tacoma

This is the local story I’m watching extremely closely.

The privately operated Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma could be heading toward a major change.

KUOW reports that GEO Group, the private company operating the facility, expects discussions with ICE about the future of the detention center. That raises the possibility of ICE taking greater control of the facility itself.

For Washington, this isn’t some distant immigration policy debate.

It’s happening right here.

The Tacoma facility has long been at the center of protests and criticism surrounding immigration detention. And nationally, the Trump administration has dramatically intensified immigration enforcement. Reuters reported earlier this year that courts had ruled thousands of times that ICE improperly detained people, while deaths in immigration custody have also drawn scrutiny.

Any expansion of ICE’s direct footprint in Tacoma needs intense public and journalistic scrutiny.

I’ll be watching this one.

✊ Washington caregivers are fighting for higher wages

Meanwhile, there’s a major labor fight developing here in Washington.

Thousands of caregivers represented by a powerful union are pushing for higher wages while the state is seeking a wage freeze during contract negotiations, according to the Washington State Standard.

This is exactly the kind of political story that can disappear underneath the national circus.

It shouldn’t.

Caregivers perform some of the most necessary work in our communities, often helping elderly and disabled Washingtonians remain in their homes.

When politicians talk about budgets, those conversations can sound abstract.

They’re not.

A “wage freeze” is somebody’s rent.

It’s somebody’s groceries.

It’s somebody deciding whether they can afford to keep doing essential work.

Watch this fight.

Progressives lost Wisconsin. The movement didn’t.

I’ve been talking about this since election night because I think the national takeaway from Wisconsin has been way too simplistic.

Yes, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley defeated democratic socialist Francesca Hong in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.

But it was razor thin.

Reuters described the Wisconsin contest as a close fight between the moderate and progressive wings of the Democratic Party, while the broader round of Midwestern primaries produced mixed results, including a progressive victory elsewhere in the region. (Reuters)

That’s not evidence that progressive politics are disappearing.

It’s evidence that there’s a real fight happening over what the Democratic Party becomes next.

Grassroots candidates are increasingly capable of competing with establishment politicians who begin these races with institutional support, donor networks and name recognition already built.

Sometimes they win.

Sometimes they lose by inches.

But the infrastructure keeps getting stronger.

That’s the part I don’t think Washington understands yet.

Rashida Tlaib rally canceled in Florida

And finally, another story worth watching closely.

A South Florida venue backed out of hosting a rally featuring Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian American currently serving in Congress. Reuters reported the cancellation Friday.

Whatever someone’s politics are, elected officials being able to speak publicly without venues being pressured into shutting down political events is something worth paying attention to.

And given the continuing political battle surrounding Gaza, Palestinian rights and criticism of the Israeli government, this isn’t happening in a vacuum.

Political speech doesn’t become less important when that speech makes powerful people uncomfortable.

That’s usually when protecting it matters most.

What I’m watching today

The thread connecting a lot of today’s stories is power.

Who gets to exercise it.

Who gets heard.

Who gets detained.

Who gets paid.

And who gets told their movement isn’t viable even when they’re coming within inches of beating institutions that have existed for decades.

Politics isn’t just what happens inside Congress or the White House.

It’s happening inside a detention center in Tacoma. It’s happening at a bargaining table in Washington. It’s happening inside grassroots campaigns trying to build something without waiting for permission from the Democratic establishment.

And it’s happening whether cable news decides to cover it or not.

That’s why independent media matters.

If there’s one thing I want you to take away from this week, it’s this: the political ground underneath this country is moving.

Not hypothetically. Not someday. Right now.

Progressive campaigns are punching above their weight. Democratic voters are showing up. ICE is facing growing resistance. And with the midterms getting closer by the day, the political environment surrounding Donald Trump is getting considerably more dangerous for Republicans.

So grab your cup. Here’s what I’m watching this morning.

1. The Tacoma ICE hunger strike is now drawing congressional scrutiny

This is the story I’m watching closest here at home.

A hunger strike is underway at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, where detained immigrants are protesting conditions inside the facility. Members of Congress are now investigating the situation.

And there’s another major question hanging over the facility: ICE may soon negotiate to take more direct control of the privately operated detention center.

That matters.

People do not refuse food inside a detention center because everything is going fine. Hunger strikes are one of the few forms of power available to people whose freedom has already been taken from them.

And this is happening right here in Washington state.

I’ll be continuing to follow this one closely.

2. Democratic voters are sending a message: they want CHANGE

Look at what just happened across the country.

Michigan. Minnesota. Wisconsin. Connecticut.

The common thread isn’t simply “progressive versus moderate.” Democratic voters are increasingly rejecting stale leadership and looking for candidates who represent generational and political change.

Abdul El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan and Peggy Flanagan’s victory in Minnesota are now part of a much larger national story about where Democratic voters are moving.

And remember what makes this especially important:

These candidates aren’t necessarily winning because they have the biggest institutional machines behind them.

They’re building grassroots coalitions around affordability, healthcare, housing, workers and an economic system that millions of Americans increasingly believe isn’t working for them.

The establishment can debate what to call it.

Voters are calling it change.

3. Democratic primary turnout is SURGING

This might be one of the most important stories heading toward November.

Democratic participation in this year’s primaries has jumped dramatically in several states.

Wisconsin and Michigan recorded their highest Democratic midterm primary participation in more than two decades, while turnout has also risen significantly elsewhere.

Now comes the important part.

That energy has to survive until November.

A fired-up primary electorate doesn’t automatically translate into winning congressional majorities. Republicans still have structural advantages on parts of the congressional map, and Democrats have absolutely no room for complacency.

But people are showing up.

People are paying attention.

People are pissed off.

That’s political fuel.

The question is whether Democrats actually know how to use it.

4. Democrats are openly fighting over the future of ICE

Something pretty remarkable happened at the Democratic National Committee’s summer meeting.

Democrats approved two competing non-binding resolutions on ICE: one supporting reform of the agency and another calling for its abolition.

That tells you everything about where this debate currently stands.

The old conversation about immigration enforcement is breaking apart.

After aggressive enforcement operations and fatal encounters involving ICE officers, pressure from the progressive wing isn’t disappearing. It’s getting louder.

And this isn’t some abstract Washington debate for communities experiencing raids, detention and deportation.

We’re watching that reality unfold right here in Washington.

The Democratic Party is eventually going to have to answer a much bigger question than whether ICE needs better policies.

What should immigration enforcement in America actually look like?

That debate has officially arrived.

5. Trump has a midterm problem

November is getting closer.

And the environment surrounding Donald Trump is increasingly ugly.

Trump is facing growing political pressure over the economy, the war with Iran and his administration’s priorities, while Republicans are staring at an energized Democratic electorate heading toward the midterms.

This is why I keep hammering the same point:

Do not treat these midterms like a normal election.

Every organizing drive matters.

Every registration drive matters.

Every congressional race matters.

Every state legislative race matters.

Every person who normally sits out a midterm matters.

There are only a few months left before Americans decide who controls Congress.

That is not a lot of time.

But it is enough time.

One More Sip

Something is happening in American politics.

You can see it in Michigan.

You can see it in Minnesota.

You can see it in record primary participation.

You can see it in grassroots candidates building campaigns without massive establishment machines.

And you can see it when detained people inside an ICE facility in Tacoma decide the only remaining tool they have to demand that somebody listen is their own bodies.

None of these stories exists in isolation.

They’re all pieces of the same larger fight over who gets power, who gets heard and what kind of country comes out the other side of this moment.

There are 79 days until Election Day.

Use them.

Stay loud. Stay involved. And I’ll keep watching the stories that deserve more attention.

About 140 people detained at the ICE facility in Tacoma are currently participating in a hunger strike, according to reports citing immigrant-rights organization La Resistencia.

They are protesting conditions inside the facility, amid longstanding concerns about medical care, sanitation, food and the treatment of people held there.

And this is happening right here in Washington.

On Saturday, Rep. Emily Randall visited the facility as the hunger strike continued. The visit comes as scrutiny of the detention center and conditions inside it continues to grow.

This is not some isolated complaint that appeared overnight.

The Northwest ICE Processing Center is a privately owned detention facility operated by GEO Group under contract with ICE.

Washington has spent years fighting for the ability to inspect conditions inside. Just last month, a federal judge granted preliminary injunctions requiring GEO Group to allow Washington Department of Health inspectors into portions of the facility after the company had resisted state inspections.

There is also a history of hunger strikes inside these walls.

Earlier this year, detained people organized strikes over their treatment and conditions. In May, advocates accused ICE of retaliating against organizers by transferring hunger-strike leaders away from the Tacoma facility. At the time, La Resistencia said hunger strikes at the facility had already dramatically increased.

Now, once again, people inside are using one of the few forms of protest available to them: refusing to eat.

Think about what that means.

When you are locked behind a wall, separated from the public and given extraordinarily little control over your own life, refusing food becomes a way to make yourself heard.

Around 140 human beings have reportedly reached that point in Tacoma.

That should be treated as an emergency.

Washington cannot look away

This is happening in our backyard.

We cannot spend years describing Washington as a place that protects immigrants and human rights while people detained within our borders are pleading for attention through hunger strikes.

The state fought for the right to inspect this facility. Members of Congress have demanded greater oversight. Advocates have documented complaints coming from inside for years.

Now those detained there are escalating their protest.

Their voices need to leave those walls.

Local officials, members of Washington’s congressional delegation and the press should be demanding transparency about exactly what is happening inside the Northwest ICE Processing Center right now: what conditions prompted this strike, what medical monitoring the participants are receiving, whether anyone involved has faced retaliation, and what ICE and GEO Group intend to do in response.

This story cannot disappear after a single news cycle.

People are putting their bodies on the line because they believe the rest of us need to know what is happening to them.

So we need to listen.

Arkansas has made something extraordinary state law: public schools will be required to install audio recording devices inside locker rooms and changing rooms.

Yes, inside locker rooms.

House Bill 1866, known as “Eli’s Law,” became Act 908 in April 2025. Beginning with the 2027-28 school year, Arkansas public schools and open-enrollment public charter schools will be required to have audio recording devices in every locker room and changing room.

The law does prohibit video recording in those spaces. But it explicitly requires audio.

And those recordings aren’t immediately deleted.

Schools must retain them for at least 90 days. Generally, they cannot keep them longer than 12 months unless an allegation of wrongdoing has been made involving someone who had access to that locker room or changing room.

That means conversations between students in spaces traditionally treated as extremely private will be recorded and stored by their schools.

Think about that for a second.

This comes after years of Republican politicians building an entire political movement around supposed concerns about children, bathrooms, locker rooms and privacy.

We were told these spaces were so sensitive that entire campaigns had to be built around who could enter them.

Now Arkansas has decided the answer is apparently: put microphones inside.

Supporters of Eli’s Law argue the recordings could help investigate allegations of abuse, bullying or other misconduct. Protecting students from abuse is obviously an important goal.

But protecting children also means asking serious questions about their privacy.

Who can access these recordings? Under what circumstances? What conversations involving students could be captured? How securely will recordings be stored? What happens when students discuss deeply personal information inside a locker room without realizing their conversation could later be reviewed?

Those questions deserve far more attention than this law has received.

Because there is something deeply unsettling about normalizing government-mandated recording devices inside spaces where children change clothes.

Whatever your politics, that should make you stop and think.

Arkansas lawmakers may call this a student-safety measure.

But when the state starts requiring microphones inside school locker rooms, the public deserves to know about it.

And somehow, almost nobody is talking about this.

It’s Election Day again.

Voters are heading to the polls today in six states: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Connecticut, Vermont, Alabama and South Carolina. And while there are several races worth watching, my eyes are planted firmly on Wisconsin.

Because after what happened in Michigan last week, we could be looking at another massive moment for the progressive movement.

WISCONSIN: FRANCESCA HONG IS THE STORY

Wisconsin Democrats are choosing their nominee to replace retiring Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, and state Rep. Francesca Hong enters Election Day as the clear frontrunner.

Hong is a democratic socialist, a Madison lawmaker and former restaurant owner running on an unapologetically progressive platform that includes universal child care, free school meals and opposition to new data-center development. (The Guardian)

And she isn’t barely leading.

She’s been way out in front.

A State Navigate poll released in late July put Hong at 44%, with Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley at 15% and former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes at 14%. A subsequent Marquette poll had Hong at 46%. (WPR)

The final stretch appears to have tightened somewhat, particularly as Crowley consolidated support. But Hong still enters today in an extraordinarily strong position.

And the story behind Crowley’s candidacy makes this race even more interesting.

Crowley dropped out of the race, then jumped back in after Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez ended her campaign. Evers endorsed Crowley, creating what has effectively become a late attempt by the party’s more traditional wing to stop Hong. (State Navigate)

Sound familiar?

Because we’ve watched versions of this movie before.

The question today is whether Democratic primary voters want the ending rewritten.

THIS IS BIGGER THAN WISCONSIN

Just last week, Abdul El-Sayed pulled off his victory in Michigan.

Now Francesca Hong has the opportunity to win the Democratic nomination for governor in one of the most important swing states in America.

If Hong wins tonight, I don’t think we should treat Michigan and Wisconsin as isolated races anymore.

We may be watching something larger developing inside the Democratic Party.

For years, progressives have been told their ideas are too far left, their candidates aren’t electable and voters ultimately want the “safe” establishment choice.

But there’s another theory of politics emerging.

What if voters aren’t looking for safer politicians?

What if they’re looking for politicians who actually believe in something?

Hong winning Wisconsin after El-Sayed’s Michigan victory would give that argument considerably more weight.

And unlike some deep-blue congressional district where Democrats are virtually guaranteed victory in November, Wisconsin is Wisconsin.

The Democratic nominee will face Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany, a Trump ally, in November.

Winning a progressive primary is one thing.

Winning Wisconsin would be something else entirely.

DON’T SLEEP ON MINNESOTA

Wisconsin isn’t the only progressive versus establishment fight happening today.

Minnesota Democrats are choosing their nominee for the open Senate seat being vacated by Tina Smith.

Progressive Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan is facing Rep. Angie Craig in one of the biggest ideological battles of today’s elections. (PBS)

Flanagan is making the case that Democrats need a more openly progressive politics capable of energizing their coalition. Craig’s argument is essentially the electability case: she has repeatedly won competitive territory and believes that approach gives Democrats the strongest chance of holding the seat in November. (MPR News)

Sound familiar again?

Wisconsin and Minnesota together make tonight fascinating.

Two states.

Two major Democratic contests.

Two opportunities for voters to tell us something about where this party is going.

CONNECTICUT HAS AN INCUMBENT TEST OF ITS OWN

There’s another race I’ll be watching in Connecticut’s 1st Congressional District.

Rep. John Larson has been in Congress for 28 years, and he’s facing former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin, state Rep. Jillian Gilchrest and Ruth Fortune in today’s Democratic primary. (CT Mirror)

That race has attracted millions in outside spending, and it represents a different version of the same question we’re seeing elsewhere:

How much appetite is there among Democratic voters for generational and political change? (CT Mirror)

TONIGHT COULD TELL US A LOT

One election doesn’t create a movement.

Neither do two.

But eventually individual races start forming a pattern.

That’s what I’m watching tonight.

If Francesca Hong wins Wisconsin and Peggy Flanagan wins Minnesota, particularly after Abdul El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan, the conversation about the direction of the Democratic Party changes again.

Because progressives would no longer simply be arguing that they can win.

They’d be winning.

Wisconsin polls are open until 8 p.m. Central tonight. (WPR)

And when those results start coming in, I’m going to be watching Wisconsin very, very closely.

Because Michigan might not have been the end of something.

It might have been the beginning.

The bad new right off the bat,

-Todd Blanche is officially the attorney general of the United States.

-New polling is challenging one of the Democratic establishment’s favorite arguments against progressive politics.

-Washington Democrats suddenly have Republican seats within reach.

- And another ICE detention center is facing a civil-rights investigation.

But there’s a bigger story connecting a lot of what happened this week.

Progressives are winning.

Not everywhere. Not automatically. And certainly not permanently.

But enough that pretending this movement doesn’t exist is becoming impossible.

Grab your coffee. Let’s get into it.

Trump’s Personal Lawyer Is Now the Attorney General

We need to start with what happened overnight.

The Senate voted 50-49 to confirm Todd Blanche as attorney general of the United States.

Blanche isn’t simply someone who previously worked somewhere in Trump’s orbit.

He was Donald Trump’s personal criminal-defense lawyer.

Yeah...

Now he runs the Justice Department.

Republican Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski joined Democrats in voting against him, but it wasn’t enough.

And Blanche’s path to confirmation was messy.

His nomination became tangled in controversy over the administration’s proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” compensation fund and protections involving Trump’s taxes. Republican senators threatened to withhold their votes, and Blanche eventually backed away from major pieces of those proposals.

There’s actually an important lesson buried inside that fight.

Congressional oversight works when members of Congress are willing to use it.

But the larger concern remains.

The Justice Department is supposed to enforce federal law independently. It may someday be responsible for investigating Trump, members of his administration or people close to him.

And the person now leading that department previously represented Trump personally.

Every politically sensitive decision coming out of DOJ deserves scrutiny from this point forward.

Turns Out Progressive Policies Are Pretty Popular

Now let’s talk about some numbers.

Because I keep hearing the same argument.

Progressives can’t win independents.

Progressives are too far left.

Progressive policies are electoral poison.

Except new Reuters/Ipsos polling paints a much more complicated picture.

Among independent voters, 64% support raising taxes on wealthy people and corporations.

Sixty percent support government-provided healthcare.

Those aren’t tiny numbers.

Those are majorities.

There is an important caveat here.

The label “democratic socialist” itself remains unpopular with many independent voters.

And that tells us something incredibly important about political messaging.

The policies are often more popular than the labels.

Republicans understand this, which is exactly why they spend so much time trying to make elections about words like “socialist,” “communist” and “radical” instead of asking voters whether wealthy corporations should pay more in taxes or whether people should be guaranteed healthcare.

And here’s another number worth remembering.

The same polling found 59% of independents are less likely to support a candidate associated with MAGA.

So maybe the story isn’t that progressive ideas are inherently unelectable.

Maybe Democrats need to get better at explaining what those ideas actually do for people.

Lead with healthcare.

Lead with wages.

Lead with housing.

Lead with affordability.

Lead with what changes in someone’s life if you win.

Let Republicans argue about labels.

Washington Democrats Suddenly Have Republican Seats Within Reach

Here in Washington, Tuesday’s primary is starting to tell us something important about November.

Democrats believe four Republican-held legislative seats are legitimately competitive, particularly in southwest Washington.

That matters.

A lot of progressive political energy gets consumed by fights inside deep-blue districts. Those fights can absolutely matter, and primaries are a legitimate way to challenge incumbents.

But there is another way to build progressive power.

Take seats from Republicans.

If Democrats can flip Republican-held legislative districts this November, they aren’t simply rearranging who sits inside the Democratic caucus.

They’re expanding governing power.

That means more votes for labor protections, housing policy, reproductive rights, climate legislation and public investment.

There is also an interesting fight developing in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District.

Progressive candidate Brent Hennrich has said he will not endorse Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez after losing the primary.

Perez now heads toward another general-election battle against Republican John Braun.

That raises a question Democrats across the country are going to confront repeatedly this year:

What happens after a brutal primary?

If we’re serious about stopping Republicans from controlling Congress, rebuilding coalitions after primaries isn’t optional.

You don’t have to suddenly agree with every Democrat.

You don’t have to pretend ideological disagreements disappeared.

But elections have consequences.

And November is coming.

Another ICE Detention Center Is Under Investigation

New Jersey officials have opened a civil-rights investigation into Delaney Hall, a privately operated ICE detention center in Newark.

The investigation follows the death of Salvadoran detainee Edwin Lopez-Cornejo.

His family says he did not receive adequate medical treatment for serious health problems.

ICE says he received appropriate care.

That disagreement is exactly why independent investigations matter.

Because this isn’t happening in isolation.

More than 50 people have reportedly died in ICE detention since Trump returned to office in 2025.

At the same time, the detention system is expanding.

And ICE’s new nationwide body-camera policy still gives the agency enormous discretion over whether footage gets released publicly.

We’re building a larger detention apparatus while transparency struggles to keep pace.

That should concern everyone.

If the federal government is going to deprive someone of their freedom, the government assumes responsibility for that person’s safety.

Immigration status does not erase basic human rights.

And government agencies should never be allowed to investigate themselves and simply tell the public everything was fine.

Independent oversight matters.

The Progressive Wave Is Getting Harder to Ignore

And finally, let’s talk about what happened this week.

Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary.

Other progressive candidates won important races.

And national reporting is increasingly describing what we’re seeing as a progressive wave inside the Democratic Party.

That’s significant.

Because for years, progressives have been told the same thing:

You can’t win.

Your ideas aren’t popular.

You’re too far left.

Voters won’t support you.

Then progressives started winning.

So the argument changed.

Now it’s:

Sure, you can win a primary. But you can’t win a general election.

Fine.

Let’s test that argument too.

Michigan is going to be one of the biggest tests.

El-Sayed is running in a state Trump has carried. Republicans are already calling him a communist and trying to define him through ideological labels.

That’s predictable.

The response shouldn’t be getting trapped in endless arguments over terminology.

Talk about healthcare.

Talk about wages.

Talk about corporate power.

Talk about why families are working harder and still falling behind.

Make Republicans defend the system people are angry about.

Because the goal isn’t merely to win an argument inside the Democratic Party.

The goal is to govern.

One More Sip

This week was important.

But nobody should confuse momentum with victory.

Winning Democratic primaries is one stage.

November is another.

Then comes governing.

That’s the hard part.

A political movement becomes powerful when it can do all three.

Nominate candidates.

Win elections.

Deliver material improvements in people’s lives.

Progressives are proving they can do the first one.

They’re increasingly proving they can do the second.

The next question is whether this movement can turn those victories into durable political power.

And that is where things get really interesting.

Meanwhile, here in Washington state, the primary results are giving us a much clearer picture of the battlefield heading into November.

A Court Just Stopped Trump’s $400 Million White House Ballroom

This is HAPPENING NOW, so im following this story very close.

A federal appeals court has ordered the Trump administration to halt aboveground construction on Trump’s planned $400 million White House ballroom.

And no, that sentence does not become less ridiculous the second time you read it.

The court’s ruling centers on something very important: Congress.

Trump cannot simply treat the White House and federal property like his personal real-estate portfolio. Major government construction projects involve laws, appropriations and congressional authority. It is time for congress to have a say.

The ruling does not necessarily kill the ballroom permanently. The administration could appeal, and the legal fight is almost certainly not finished.

But for now, construction has been stopped.

And underneath the absurdity of a $400 million ballroom is a much bigger story.

Trump has spent his presidency repeatedly testing the same question:

What can I do without Congress?

The courts just gave him an answer on this one.

Not everything.

Trump Is Taking Another Swing at Birthright Citizenship

Trump also signed two new executive orders Thursday aimed at narrowing birthright citizenship.

This comes after his broader attempt to restrict citizenship guaranteed by the 14th Amendment ran into the Supreme Court.

Instead of abandoning the effort, the administration appears to be changing tactics.

The new orders target narrower categories, including so-called “birth tourism” and children born in the United States under certain circumstances involving foreign nationals.

The administration believes these restrictions can survive because they are narrower than Trump’s previous attempt.

Civil-rights organizations see something very different: a president searching for another way to accomplish something the Constitution does not allow him to do broadly.

And this is where we need to be extremely careful with the language.

Trump has not abolished birthright citizenship.

Expect immediate legal challenges.

But the larger point matters.

When Trump encounters a legal boundary, he increasingly doesn’t treat that boundary as the end of the argument.

He searches for another door.

ICE Is Watching Its Critics

Now we get to the story that might concern me the most this morning.

New reporting says ICE has expanded its use of contractors and digital surveillance tools to monitor social media and identify people criticizing the agency online.

DHS says these efforts are designed to identify threats and doxxing against immigration officers.

Threats should obviously be investigated.

But political criticism is not a threat.

Journalism is not a threat.

Protesting government policy is not a threat.

And according to the reporting, some people whose conduct appeared to involve political criticism rather than criminal threats were still visited by federal agents or subjected to subpoenas without ultimately being charged.

That should make everyone uncomfortable regardless of their immigration politics.

Because constitutional rights do not disappear when the government dislikes what you’re saying.

There is another layer to this.

ICE is simultaneously expanding its use of body cameras, but its policy gives the agency enormous discretion over whether that footage gets released.

Think about the imbalance there.

The government gets increasingly sophisticated tools to watch us.

But when we want to see what the government itself did?

The government gets to decide.

Congress needs to be asking serious questions about exactly what information ICE is collecting, how long that information is retained, what contractors have access to it and what protections exist for journalists, attorneys, activists and ordinary Americans criticizing government policy.

Criticizing ICE is not a crime.

It cannot become one by technological proxy.

Trump’s Former Personal Lawyer Could Soon Run the Justice Department

Todd Blanche is moving closer to becoming the permanent attorney general of the United States.

That sentence deserves some context.

Blanche wasn’t merely someone who happened to work for Trump years ago.

He was Trump’s personal criminal-defense attorney.

Now Trump wants him permanently running the Department of Justice.

Some Republicans are uncomfortable with that.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski says she will vote against Blanche, while Sen. Bill Cassidy says he will support him, strengthening his path toward confirmation.

The controversy surrounding Blanche has already produced one interesting demonstration of congressional power.

Republican senators threatened his nomination over Trump’s proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund and other concerns.

The administration backed down on major portions of it.

That’s worth remembering.

Congress is not powerless against Trump.

Courts are not powerless against Trump.

Institutions become powerless when the people running them decide not to use the authority they already have.

The final Senate vote on Blanche will tell us quite a bit about whether Republicans actually believe the Justice Department should maintain independence from the president it may someday have to investigate.

LOCAL NEWS: Washington’s November Battlefield Is Taking Shape

Finally, let’s bring this home.

Washington’s primary results continue to come in, and we’re starting to see what November could look like.

And the story is a little more complicated than simply saying progressives won or lost.

Some progressive challenges to Democratic incumbents in Seattle struggled.

In the 43rd Legislative District, Senate Majority Leader Jamie Pedersen holds a commanding lead over progressive challenger Hannah Sabio-Howell. Both are advancing under Washington’s top-two system, meaning they’ll face each other again in November.

But outside Seattle, something potentially much more consequential is happening.

Democrats appear competitive in several Republican-held legislative districts, particularly in southwest Washington.

That creates the possibility that November isn’t merely about defending Democratic power.

It could be about expanding it. In a big way.

And then there is Washington’s 3rd Congressional District.

Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Republican John Braun are headed toward what could become one of the most important House races in the country.

If control of Congress comes down to a handful of seats, Washington could be right in the middle of the fight.

The primary wasn’t the finish line.

It drew the map.

Now the general election begins.

One More Sip

There is a thread connecting a lot of today’s stories.

Power.

Who has it?

Who checks it?

And what happens when someone decides the normal boundaries don’t apply to them?

A court just told Trump he cannot simply move forward with a $400 million White House construction project without congressional authority.

Trump is looking for another route around constitutional protections for birthright citizenship.

ICE is expanding the government’s ability to monitor people criticizing it.

And the Senate is considering putting Trump’s former personal lawyer permanently in charge of the Justice Department.

None of these stories exist in isolation.

They’re all asking variations of the same question:

Do the guardrails still work?

The answer depends on whether courts enforce their rulings, whether Congress uses its authority, whether journalists keep digging and whether ordinary people continue paying attention.

Because democracy doesn’t usually disappear in one dramatic moment.

It gets tested.

Then tested again.

And eventually someone has to say no.

I have really good news to report to everyone.

Something changed in Michigan this week.

And I don’t think we fully understand how big it is yet.

Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate.

That sentence alone is remarkable.

He defeated Haley Stevens, an establishment-backed sitting member of Congress, in one of the most important Democratic primaries of the entire cycle. He did it while facing a MASSIVE amount of outside spending and while running openly on policies that Democrats have spent years being told are too progressive, too risky, or simply “unelectable.” The radical left is at it again folks, with a WINNING message.

Medicare for All.

Taking on corporate power.

Rejecting the idea that unlimited money should determine who gets to represent us.

Speaking openly about Gaza and America’s relationship with Israel.

And he won.

But here’s the part I keep thinking about:

Michigan isn’t New York City.

This wasn’t a progressive winning a deep-blue district where the general election is basically predetermined.

This happened in Michigan.

A battleground state.(For now)

A state Donald Trump has won.

A state Democrats desperately need if they want to compete for control of the United States Senate. Period, full stop.

And Democratic voters looked at the supposedly “safe” option and the progressive option and chose the progressive.

That matters.

We’ve been told this movement has a ceiling

For years, progressives have heard basically the same argument.

Bernie Sanders was a phenomenon, but he couldn’t win.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was an exception.

Zohran Mamdani was New York.

Progressive congressional victories were just deep-blue districts.

Democratic socialism might work in Brooklyn, but certainly not the Midwest.

There was always another explanation.

Another reason this victory or that victory didn’t actually prove anything.

But eventually, exceptions start becoming a pattern.

And I think we’re getting dangerously close to that point.

New York’s 2026 primaries already provided another piece of evidence. Three congressional candidates backed by Mamdani won their Democratic primaries, including challengers who defeated incumbents.

Now Michigan has added something entirely different to the equation.

A statewide Senate primary.

In the Midwest.

And that’s why I don’t think the most important question is what happened Tuesday.

The question is what happens now…

Two days after voters went to the polls across several states, we’re starting to get a much clearer picture of what Tuesday actually meant. It’s good news for the progressive movement.

And there’s a theme emerging that I think deserves more attention than it’s getting:

The political ground is moving.

Progressives just scored one of their biggest victories of the cycle in Michigan. Here in Washington state, Democrats are looking at opportunities to expand their power in Olympia. Meanwhile, the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown is reaching military families, Republicans in Congress are escalating their pursuit of Anthony Fauci, and the war with Iran may finally be approaching a diplomatic opening.

Here are the five stories I’m watching this morning and through the day today:

1. Abdul El-Sayed’s victory is bigger than one Senate primary

He defeated a candidate backed by major Democratic establishment figures while campaigning openly on Medicare for All, affordability and Gaza. AIPAC reportedly spent more than $32 million in advertising against him, while roughly $70 million in outside money was spent against him overall.

And he still won.

That matters folks.

For years, progressive candidates have been told that these positions are too dangerous, too radical or simply “unelectable.”

Michigan voters just tested that theory.

Now comes the harder part.

El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers in November, and Republicans have already started attacking him over his progressive politics and his position on Israel. Democratic leaders, including Chuck Schumer, have quickly rallied behind El-Sayed after the primary.

The primary argument is over.

Now we find out whether this movement can take the energy that won a Democratic primary and turn it into a statewide coalition capable of winning a United States Senate seat.

That might be one of the most important political experiments of the entire midterm election.

2. Washington Democrats are seeing signs of a possible blue wave

There was another interesting signal Tuesday night much closer to home.

Democrats are targeting several Republican-held seats in the Washington Legislature this November, and early primary returns gave them reasons to be optimistic.

Democratic candidates were narrowly leading Republican incumbents across four State House races in Washington’s 17th and 18th Legislative Districts. Washington Democratic Party Chair Shasti Conrad said the results could represent the beginnings of a “big blue wave.”

There were some fascinating Seattle results too.

Progressive Nilu Jenks led the Seattle City Council District 5 primary with nearly 50% of the initial vote, ahead of Julie Kang at roughly 36%. Jenks has questioned Seattle’s surveillance camera system and supports allowing the city’s unarmed crisis responders to respond to some calls without police escorts.

Seattle voters also overwhelmingly approved the city’s library levy, with roughly 72% voting yes in the initial count.

Not every progressive challenger had a good night. Hannah Sabio-Howell trailed incumbent state Sen. Jamie Pedersen badly in the 43rd District primary, although Washington’s top-two system means both are headed to November.

So no, Washington didn’t experience some universal progressive sweep.

But there are enough interesting results here that November could reshape both Olympia and Seattle politics.

I’ll be watching these races very closely.

3. Trump’s immigration crackdown is now sweeping up military families

This one deserves considerably more attention. It’s insane.

An Associated Press investigation found that more than 50 parents and spouses of active-duty U.S. military members have been detained since Trump returned to office.

At least six have been deported. One self-deported. At least eight immediate relatives of service members remain in federal immigration custody.

For decades, immediate family members of military personnel generally received special consideration under immigration policy.

That protection is now being dismantled as the administration expands its mass-deportation campaign.

And think about the contradiction here.

The United States is asking people to serve this country while simultaneously putting some of their spouses and parents into immigration detention.

AP found cases where these detentions have delayed deployments, forced service members to take leave and separated military families from people providing childcare and emotional support. (AP News⁠)

Whatever rhetoric the administration uses to sell this immigration crackdown, stories like this expose what mass enforcement actually looks like once it leaves the campaign rally and enters people’s homes.

4. Republicans just voted to hold Anthony Fauci in contempt

The Republican-led Senate Homeland Security Committee voted along party lines Thursday to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress.

Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 100 times during testimony last week concerning his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. (AP News⁠)

Committee Chair Rand Paul argues that Fauci cannot legitimately claim fear of federal prosecution because President Joe Biden previously pardoned him.

Fauci and Democrats argue something very different: Republicans have spent years openly talking about prosecuting him, giving him legitimate reason to protect himself legally.

Paul now says he intends to refer the matter directly to the Justice Department rather than first putting the contempt resolution before the full Senate, a move Democrats have questioned legally. (AP News⁠)

And this is where this becomes bigger than Anthony Fauci.

We are watching Congress collide with the Fifth Amendment while a Republican administration controls the Justice Department and Republican lawmakers openly demand prosecutions of people they consider political enemies.

Whatever you think about Fauci, those constitutional questions should matter.

5. There may finally be movement toward diplomacy with Iran

After months of war, Donald Trump is once again publicly suggesting negotiations with Iran are progressing.

Trump said talks with Tehran appear to be “working out quite well,” although he offered few specifics. The administration has suggested an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be close. (Reuters⁠)

That would be enormous.

The war began February 28 with U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, followed by Iranian strikes against Israel and Gulf states hosting American bases. The conflict has now continued for months, killing thousands and displacing millions. (Reuters⁠)

There is absolutely reason for skepticism here.

Trump has repeatedly described negotiations positively without producing a permanent end to the conflict.

But diplomacy is still preferable to escalation.

If there is a legitimate opportunity to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and move toward ending this war, the administration should take it.

Not another round of threats.

Not another bombing campaign.

Diplomacy.

The Bottom Line

The story I keep coming back to this morning is Michigan.

Because politics has a funny way of turning things that were supposedly impossible into things that suddenly look inevitable.

Progressives were told candidates like Abdul El-Sayed couldn’t win.

They were told enormous outside spending would bury campaigns like his.

They were told voters wouldn’t support Medicare for All.

They were told criticizing American policy toward Israel was political suicide.

Then voters actually got a say.

And Abdul won.

That doesn’t mean the progressive movement suddenly controls the Democratic Party. It doesn’t mean every progressive candidate is going to win. Tuesday itself gave us plenty of evidence otherwise.

But it does mean something is happening.

Candidates are organizing. Volunteers are knocking doors. Small donors are putting money behind movements they believe in. Voters are challenging assumptions that political consultants have treated as gospel for decades.

And now comes November.

The primaries were the argument over what kind of Democratic Party voters want.

The general election is the argument over what kind of country we want.

That fight is already underway.

We are officially 48 hours away from some major primaries in Michigan and Washington, the United States may finally have an opening to step back from another disastrous escalation with Iran, and the Trump administration is facing new resistance over immigration and control of the Justice Department.

Trump Says He Canceled Another Attack on Iran

We’ll start with what could become the biggest story of the day.

President Trump says he canceled another planned U.S. attack on Iran after intermediaries presented parameters for a potential diplomatic agreement.

That is good news. Boming is bad. This pointless war is BAD.

Any movement away from another round of bombing and toward diplomacy should be welcomed.

But we need to be extremely careful about calling this peace.

There is no durable ceasefire yet. There is no finalized agreement. US, Iranian and Israeli forces remain on heightened alert, and the situation could change quickly as we have seen over the last few months.

There is also a disturbing new development here at home.

Federal authorities are investigating cyberattacks targeting American water systems across multiple states. Officials are examining whether Iranian-affiliated actors could be responsible, but the attacks have not been formally attributed to Iran.

So right now, the situation is fragile to say the least.

If there is actually an opportunity for diplomacy, the administration needs to take it. Americans have already watched another conflict escalate without a clear endgame.

Stopping one round of strikes is a start.

Ending the war should be the obvious goal.

Michigan Is 48 Hours Away From a Political Earthquake

Now to Michigan. The place I grew up. The place I called home for over 20 years.

Tuesday is primary day, and Abdul El-Sayed is entering the final 48 hours of what has become one of the most consequential Democratic primaries in the country. Full stop.

This race stopped being just about two candidates a long time ago.

It has become a referendum on what kind of Democratic Party voters actually want.

El-Sayed has built a progressive campaign around Medicare for All, working-class politics and rejecting corporate influence.

We sat down with El-Sayed a few months and endorsed his campaign.

Haley Stevens has the backing of much of the Democratic establishment and an enormous outside-spending operation supporting her.

Tens of millions of dollars have been poured into this race.

And yet Abdul is still standing, and leading in the polls.

More than standing. He enters the final stretch with genuine momentum and the possibility of pulling off one of the biggest progressive victories of the cycle.

If he wins Tuesday, El-Sayed could also eventually become the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate.

But this is where I want everyone to ignore the temptation to declare victory early.

Polls do not elect senators.

People do.

Today is the final day of statewide early voting in Michigan. After that, this becomes entirely about Election Day turnout.

If you support Abdul El-Sayed, these next 48 hours matter.

Phone bank. Volunteer. Talk to Michigan voters you know.

Finish the job.

Michigan, you CAN DO THIS.

I know you will do this.

Trump Is Fighting His Own Republicans Over the Justice Department (Yes really)

Meanwhile, something wild is happening inside Trump’s own MAGA party.

Trump wants his own personal lawyer, Todd Blanche, confirmed as attorney general.

But Republican Senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis are standing in the way.

Their concern centers on Trump’s proposed roughly $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund, which critics warn could ultimately send taxpayer money to Trump allies and people connected to January 6-related claims.

Trump previously indicated that the idea was dead.

Now he’s threatening to bring it back. Shocking right?

And he’s essentially telling Republican senators that if they refuse to confirm Blanche, he can simply keep Blanche running the Justice Department in an acting capacity anyway.

Yikes

Think about what that means.

The Senate has a constitutional responsibility to provide advice and consent on major presidential appointments.

Trump’s response to senators exercising that authority is effectively: I will just go around you.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to take up Blanche’s nomination Tuesday.

Watch Cornyn and Tillis.

This could become a much bigger confrontation over whether Senate Republicans are actually willing to exercise independent power under Trump.

Another Court Just Put Limits on Trump’s ICE Detention Strategy

There was also an important immigration ruling this week some of you might of missed. I reported about it on threads:

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 that immigrants arrested inside the United States cannot automatically be detained without having an opportunity to seek release on bond.

The Trump administration has been pushing an extraordinarily broad interpretation of mandatory detention, one that could allow people to remain incarcerated throughout immigration proceedings without meaningful individualized review.

Now, another federal appeals court has now rejected that argument.

But this fight is far from over.

Different appeals courts have reached different conclusions, making Supreme Court involvement increasingly possible.

But the fundamental question is bigger than immigration policy.

Can the government lock someone up indefinitely while their case proceeds without even allowing them to ask a judge for release?

(That answer is no)

The Trump administration wants dramatically expanded power to do exactly that.

Federal courts are increasingly pushing back because they are upholding the law.

Washington, Your Ballot Is Due Tuesday

Finally, let’s bring this home. Legitimately.

Washington’s primary is Tuesday.

That means if your ballot is currently sitting underneath a stack of desk crap somewhere, today would be an PERFECT day to rescue it.

Congressional races, legislative contests, judicial elections and important local races are all on ballots across the state. This is all important.

And because Washington uses a top-two primary system, Tuesday doesn’t simply determine party nominees.

It determines who gets to continue to November.

If you missed the earlier registration deadline, you can still register in person through 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Use an official ballot drop box and make sure your vote is in by 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Low-turnout elections are where a relatively small number of people can exercise an enormous amount of political power.

Don’t surrender yours because the ballot sat unopened on the kitchen counter.

One Final Sip

On a personal note,Tuesday could be enormous.

Michigan could deliver one of the biggest progressive victories of this election cycle, and it could change EVERYTHING when it comes to how the democratic establishment moves forward with the progressive left.

Here in Washington voters will determine which candidates survive into November. Some of my friends are currently in local contests. My stomach will be turning all day haha

On top of that,Senate Republicans could decide whether they’re actually willing to challenge Trump over control of the Justice Department.

And somewhere behind all of it, diplomats are trying to keep the United States and Iran from sliding back into another round of attacks.

LOTS GOING ON FOLKS!

These next 48 hours matter.

So pay attention.

Vote.

Organize.

And don’t let anyone convince you politics is something happening somewhere else.

It’s happening right now.

This is obviously the story closest to home for me, and after covering yesterday’s press conference at City Hall, there are still a lot of questions that need answers.

Mayor Katie Wilson is defending her decision to push Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes out following the deadly Bite of Seattle shooting and the chaotic response that followed.

Wilson told KUOW that she had lost confidence in Barnes’ leadership. She also strongly denied a claim from an SPD source that she personally delayed public notification following the shooting.

That distinction matters.

Seattle isn’t just dealing with a change in police leadership. The city is still dealing with the aftermath of a mass shooting, an ongoing investigation, questions about communication during the response, and a public that deserves transparency about what happened.

Barnes’ resignation was announced Thursday.

And this story is nowhere near finished.

Trump’s fight over the Justice Department is escalating

Meanwhile, Washington is heading toward another major confirmation fight, as usual.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to take up the nomination of Todd Blanche for attorney general on Tuesday, according to reporting circulating overnight.

Blanche isn’t simply another conservative lawyer entering the Trump administration. He previously served as one of Donald Trump’s personal defense attorneys.

That alone makes the confirmation battle worth watching closely.

Trump has spent years attacking the independence of institutions investigating him while demanding extraordinary loyalty from the people surrounding him.

Now the Senate gets to decide whether another person from Trump’s personal legal orbit should lead the Department of Justice.

That hearing could become one of the biggest political stories of the coming week.

Democrats see an unexpected House opportunity in Ohio

Here’s one that could matter enormously as we move closer to the midterms.

Democrats increasingly believe Republican Rep. Max Miller’s northeast Ohio congressional seat could become competitive as allegations of abuse against Miller generate new political pressure.

Miller denies the allegations. But Democrats are already looking at a district that previously might not have received nearly this much attention.

And this is exactly why we need to watch individual House races instead of treating the midterms like one giant national poll.

Control of Congress can come down to a handful of seats.

A district suddenly becoming competitive because of a scandal, a strong challenger or changing political conditions can alter the entire battlefield.

Keep this one on the radar.

Seattle enters a new chapter

I want to end back here at home.

The last week has been brutal for Seattle.

People were killed. Families are grieving. Our city has been demanding answers. And now the police department itself is entering a period of leadership transition while investigators continue working to determine exactly what happened at Seattle Center.

There are going to be political fights about Mayor Wilson’s decision. It is happening right now.

The press conference I attended yesterday was tense.

And honestly,there should be scrutiny.

But there also needs to be room for something incredibly basic: asking questions before deciding we already know all the answers.

That’s part of why independent journalism matters.

Yesterday I got to sit inside Seattle City Hall and ask those questions directly.

I plan on continuing to do exactly that.

Because whether we’re talking about the White House, Congress or our own city government, elected officials work for the public.

And the public deserves answers.

Today’s press conference at Seattle City Hall was one of those moments. It was wild to be in the room..

As Mayor Katy Wilson answered questions from the media, the tone shifted as reporters began pressing harder on several issues. Follow-up questions became more direct. Clarifications were requested. At times, the exchange became noticeably tense.

That’s exactly what a healthy press is supposed to do.

A press conference isn’t just an opportunity for elected officials to deliver prepared statements. It’s one of the few places where journalists can ask questions on behalf of the public, challenge inconsistencies, and push for answers that residents deserve.

Watching experienced reporters work the room was an education in itself. Good journalism isn’t about creating conflict for the sake of conflict. It’s about persistence. Sometimes the first answer isn’t the complete answer, and it’s the follow-up question that matters most.

As someone attending with press credentials for the first time, it was an incredible experience to witness that process firsthand. Being in the room reinforced something I’ve believed for a long time: local journalism matters.

The decisions being made at City Hall affect people’s daily lives. Whether it’s public safety, housing, transportation, or city services, accountability starts with asking difficult questions, even when those questions make the room uncomfortable.

I’m grateful to Mayor Wilson’s office and the City of Seattle communications team for granting me access to today’s event. Opportunities like this allow independent journalists to bring more transparency and context directly to the community.

This is only the beginning.

The biggest story in the country remains the growing conflict between the United States and Iran. Overnight brought continued military operations and renewed concerns that the fighting could expand beyond its current scope.

This isn’t just a foreign policy story. Good morning. Usually this is where we break down the news that happened overnight. Today is different.

Last night at around 6pm PST, just steps from my neighborhood, gunfire shattered what should of been an evening of music, food, and community.

Three people were killed. Others, including a young child, were injured.

Today, Seattle is mourning.

Seattle Center is where families celebrate birthdays, tourists discover the city, and neighbors gather on summer evenings.

Violence in a place like that doesn't just take lives. It changes how a community experiences one of its most cherished public spaces.

Last night, thousands of Seattleites gathered not because they had answers,but because they refused to let tragedy have the final word.

This morning, our city grieves. We remember those who were lost, hope for the recovery of those who were injured, and wait for answers with patience.

I’ll continue following this story as more verified information becomes available.
