In October 1777, the campaign that began with 9,000 British troops marching south from Canada, then led to two battles at Freeman’s Farm & Bemus Heights in Stillwater, ended on the flats at Saratoga with Burgoyne surrendering his sword. Every October, we mark it. This year, Victory Season at Saratoga spans two weekends of living history, ceremony, open historic sites, and music. Here is what is ahead, and what you should save to your calendar now.

Free, family friendly, and the most hands-on history weekend of the year. Living historians take over Fort Hardy Park and bring the period between the two Battles of Saratoga and Burgoyne’s surrender to life.

Across the weekend: military encampments, artillery demonstrations, muster drills and musket firing, 18th century music, a traveling forge, horse drawn wagon rides, and hands-on activities for every age.

The award winning Musicians of Ma’alwyck perform 18th century music on flute, violin, cello, keyboard, and guitar, joined by renowned soprano Vedrana Kalas. The program includes excerpts from a Scarlatti secular cantata, Thomas Arne’s overture and the aria “A Soldier Tir’d of War’s Alarms,” Handel’s “Piangero” from Giulio Cesare, and a set of traditional hornpipes, a ground, and Scottish music of the era.

On September 12, 1777, more than 8,000 soldiers of the Northern Army arrived at Bemus Heights, using the Hudson River Valley’s geography to strengthen their position against British General John Burgoyne’s army advancing toward Albany.

Two hundred forty-nine years later, visitors can experience that landscape after dark during the annual Night Sky Program at Neilson Farm, Battlefield Tour Road Stop 2. Park rangers and volunteers will explore the army’s arrival, camp life, its impact on local civilians, and the night sky shared by those who stood on this ground in 1777.

Visitors can tour the candlelit Neilson House, enjoy the evening landscape, meet park staff and volunteers, and take part in a 45-minute ranger program beginning at 8:15 p.m. Junior Rangers can also complete a Night Sky Explorer book and earn a patch.

Saratoga remains one of the most revealing—and most accessible—Revolutionary War landscapes in the country, especially as the Semiquincentennial approaches. What distinguishes it is not a single landmark, but a connected terrain that must be experienced in motion. The 1777 campaign does not sit in one place. It unfolds across communities, each holding part of the story.

The name “Saratoga” can obscure as much as it clarifies. The Town of Saratoga, established in 1788, is one of the county’s original municipalities. Stillwater contains the core battlefield at Freeman’s Farm and Bemus Heights. Saratoga Springs developed later around mineral springs and horse racing, not the fighting itself. Nearby communities—Schuylerville, Victory, Easton, Greenwich, and Northumberland—frame the campaign’s final phases: siege, retreat, and surrender.

To move through this region is to follow a geographic narrative. The Hudson River corridor still shapes the experience much as it shaped the campaign. Roads trace old routes. River crossings and elevations remain legible. The landscape holds together. Saratoga is not a single destination but a continuous field of action, where the story emerges through distance and direction.

The Battles of Saratoga—Freeman’s Farm on September 19 and Bemus Heights on October 7—along with the siege that followed from October 10 to 16 and the surrender on October 17, form only part of a wider campaign marked by smaller clashes and constant movement. Outcomes here were never assured. They turned, often, on moments of fortune and misfortune—weather, timing, terrain, and human decision.

This campaign unfolded within the larger American Revolution, also known as the American War of Independence (1775–1783), a complex international conflict involving thirteen colonies seeking independence from British rule. Neighbors chose sides. American Indians, enslaved and free people, and European allies all shaped the course of events. Moments like the Battles of Saratoga helped shift that struggle, drawing in foreign support and moving a fractured resistance closer to nationhood.

The ground still carries that story. Not as a single point, but as a connected landscape—one that asks to be followed.

At the meeting of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers, modern roads make the distances between Albany, the Mohawk Valley and Saratoga seem manageable.

In August 1777, distance was a military fact.

Rivers carried supplies. Roads determined movement. A delayed reinforcement could change the strength of an army before a battle was ever fought.

This was the moment between two phases of the Northern Campaign.

Burgoyne’s army had captured Fort Ticonderoga and pushed south toward Albany. Then the campaign began to change. His detachment suffered a costly defeat at Bennington. St. Leger’s expedition abandoned the siege of Fort Schuyler and retreated from the Mohawk Valley. Howe’s army moved toward Philadelphia rather than north to meet Burgoyne.

The British strategy was no longer converging as planned.

Burgoyne was increasingly on his own. Gates, meanwhile, was still waiting for his army to arrive.

On August 27, General Horatio Gates was at Van Schaick’s Island, where the Mohawk meets the Hudson. His army needed food. Morgan’s riflemen had not arrived. The militia were still on the road.

Gates wrote plainly to George Washington: the army had no salt meat in store, and neither Colonel Daniel Morgan’s corps nor the militia had yet arrived.

That detail matters.

The army that would fight at Saratoga did not simply appear at Bemus Heights.

It was being reinforced, supplied and organized over time.

At the same moment, Burgoyne was moving farther from the resources that had sustained his advance.

Seen from the ground, Saratoga was not yet a victory.

The question was becoming simpler: who could bring more men and supplies to the right place before the other side could stop them?

Six forces help explain how that balance began to change.

1. WINNER: Horatio Gates — Time Became an American Resource

Start with the landscape

At Van Schaick’s Island, the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers created more than a geographic landmark.

They created a military crossroads.

Gates assumed command of the Northern Department on August 19. When he arrived, American forces were scattered across the region. General John Stark was at Bennington. Benedict Arnold was moving toward Fort Schuyler. General Benjamin Lincoln was operating with forces elsewhere in the northern theater. Morgan’s riflemen were still on their way.

Gates had inherited a difficult situation.

The British had captured Fort Ticonderoga. American forces had retreated south. Supplies were short. The army needed reinforcements.

Gates did not create the American victory by himself.

His importance at this stage was more practical.

He became the commander around whom forces arriving from different directions could begin to concentrate.

His August 27 letter to Washington shows just how incomplete that process remained. The army needed salt meat. Morgan’s corps had not arrived. The militia were still coming.

By September 12, more than 8,000 American soldiers had reached Bemus Heights and begun building fortifications that used the ridge and surrounding terrain to their advantage.

Numbers mattered, but time mattered too. Each day brought more American soldiers into the campaign.

Every day Burgoyne spent moving south consumed supplies and increased the distance between his army and its base.

The outcome was not inevitable.

But the choices available to the two commanders were changing.

Look from Bemus Heights

Stand on the ridge and look toward the Hudson.

The fortifications make more sense when you remember that the American army did not simply arrive and begin fighting.

It first had to find ground where an army could hold.

The landscape helped make that possible.

What changes when scattered forces finally become an army?

2. WINNER: John Stark — Bennington Gave Independence New Weight

Start with the person

John Stark entered this phase of the campaign with something Gates could not simply order into existence:

authority.

On August 16, Stark’s New Hampshire militia and other American forces defeated Burgoyne’s detachment at Bennington. The victory cost the British and German forces heavily and disrupted Burgoyne’s effort to gather supplies and reinforcements.

But Bennington also demonstrated the value of independent militia commands.

Stark did not become another subordinate in Gates’s Continental chain of command.

The Revolution did not produce one neat American army. Continental troops, militia and locally raised forces often operated under different commanders.

Stark could be difficult to control. At Bennington, that independence had also proved useful.

Bennington showed what rapid local mobilization could accomplish. Later, when Burgoyne retreated north in October, Stark’s militia helped close the route by which the British hoped to escape.

Bennington therefore mattered twice.

It weakened Burgoyne in August.

Stark’s independent command mattered again when Burgoyne needed somewhere to go in October.

Look north

When you stand on the Saratoga landscape, don’t look only at the American line.

Look toward the roads behind Burgoyne.

The question is not simply where Gates’s army stood.

It is also where Burgoyne could go.

When does an army’s lack of uniformity become a source of flexibility?

3. WINNER: Reinforcements — More Than Numbers

Perhaps the most important “winner” was not a single commander.

It was the growing ability of the American army to bring different kinds of soldiers into the same campaign.

Washington sent Colonel Daniel Morgan north with 400 riflemen drawn from the Virginia and Pennsylvania lines of the Continental Army. Gates later combined them with 300 light infantry under Major Henry Dearborn.

Militia were gathering. Lincoln was operating elsewhere in the northern theater. Arnold was returning from the successful relief of Fort Schuyler.

These forces were not identical.

That was their value.

Morgan’s riflemen could operate differently from conventional line infantry. Light infantry could move through terrain in ways that suited different tactical problems. Militia brought manpower and local knowledge.

The American army was becoming more capable not because every soldier fought the same way, but because commanders could use different kinds of soldiers for different purposes.

At Freeman’s Farm, that mattered.

The battlefield included woods, open fields, ravines and rising ground. The army was learning to use those features rather than simply fight across them.

Look into the woods

At Freeman’s Farm, look beyond the open fields.

The wooded ground helps explain why riflemen, light infantry and conventional infantry could perform different functions within the same battle.

The army was adapting to the ground in front of it.

What changes when an army can ask different soldiers to solve different problems?

4. LOSER: John Burgoyne — The Campaign Was Running Out of Room

British General John Burgoyne had begun the campaign with the initiative.

His army had captured Fort Ticonderoga and moved south through the Champlain Valley toward the Hudson.

By late August, the geography of the campaign was beginning to work against him.

His force had suffered a costly setback at Bennington.

St. Leger’s expedition had abandoned the siege of Fort Schuyler and retreated toward Canada.

Howe had not moved north to join him.

The larger British strategy depended upon pressure from several directions. Those operations were no longer converging as intended.

Burgoyne still commanded a formidable army.

But an army can remain formidable while its options diminish.

The problem was distance.

Burgoyne was moving farther from his base while consuming supplies. The roads behind him were becoming longer lines of communication rather than secure avenues of retreat.

The failure of St. Leger’s expedition removed pressure from the Mohawk Valley.

The defeat at Bennington cost men and supplies.

And the American army was growing.

The campaign had not yet been lost.

But Burgoyne’s room for error was shrinking.

Follow the route south

Trace Burgoyne’s route from Fort Ticonderoga toward Saratoga.

Then look at the roads and waterways behind him.

The question changes from:

Why didn’t Burgoyne simply retreat?

to:

Where could he retreat to?

That question would become critical in October, when American forces closed the remaining routes north.

5. LOSER: St. Leger’s Expedition — The Mohawk Valley Slipped Away

The Mohawk Valley can look like a separate story from Saratoga.

In 1777, it was not.

The British strategy depended upon St. Leger’s expedition moving east through the Mohawk Valley, threatening the American position and helping create pressure toward Albany. The force reached Fort Schuyler and began its siege on August 3.

The fort held.

Then the American relief effort approached.

Benedict Arnold was leading that force, but Arnold did not need to storm the fort to change the situation. According to the National Park Service, Arnold used Han Yost Schuyler, a captured Royalist with connections among St. Leger’s American Indian allies, to spread an exaggerated report about the size and proximity of the approaching American force. St. Leger’s army withdrew on August 22.

The significance extended beyond the fort.

The British had depended upon American Indian allies, local support and information from the surrounding country.

Those relationships were not automatic.

The American Revolution divided the Six Nations Confederacy, and different nations and communities made different choices as the war unfolded. At Fort Schuyler, Oneida allies provided scouting and intelligence and helped support the American defense.

At Fort Schuyler, the British discovered how quickly an expedition could become vulnerable when the information and support it expected were no longer dependable.

This was not simply a military defeat.

It left Burgoyne without the pressure from the west that his campaign had counted on.

St. Leger’s force had been intended to create pressure in the Mohawk Valley while Burgoyne advanced from the north.

Instead, the expedition disappeared from the campaign.

Trace the Mohawk Valley

Look at the distance between Fort Schuyler and Saratoga.

It is easy to see two separate campaigns.

In 1777, they were connected.

When St. Leger’s expedition failed, Burgoyne lost more than a supporting force.

He lost pressure on the American flank and one of the routes by which the larger British strategy was supposed to work.

What happens to an army when the landscape around it becomes harder to read?

6. THE DILEMMA: George Washington — He Could Not Be Strong Everywhere

George Washington did not lose the Saratoga Campaign.

He faced a problem with no easy solution.

His army was confronting William Howe’s campaign against Philadelphia while Burgoyne was advancing through New York.

Washington could not put his best troops everywhere.

In August, he considered whether to remain near Philadelphia, move toward the Hudson to oppose Burgoyne, or respond to other possibilities created by Howe’s movements.

He eventually sent Daniel Morgan and his riflemen north.

Those men would become important at Saratoga.

Meanwhile, Washington remained responsible for confronting Howe.

Philadelphia fell.

It would be too strong to argue that sending Morgan caused Philadelphia to fall. Howe’s campaign was already underway.

But the larger dilemma was real.

The Continental Army did not have enough experienced troops to solve every problem simultaneously.

Washington had to defend one theater while strengthening another.

The American army in Pennsylvania was facing a major British offensive while troops detached from Washington’s army were helping Gates build the force that would defeat Burgoyne.

Saratoga and Philadelphia were not separate stories.

They were different parts of the same problem.

Look beyond Saratoga

When you stand on the battlefield, remember that the Revolution was not happening here alone.

Philadelphia was under threat.

Washington’s army was fighting there.

Burgoyne was fighting here.

Fort Schuyler had just survived in the Mohawk Valley.

Lincoln and Stark were operating elsewhere.

The American Revolution was a connected landscape, not a single battlefield.

What does a commander sacrifice when he cannot be strong everywhere at once?

What the Six Forces Reveal

The useful thing about “winners” and “losers” is not deciding who was good and who was bad.

It is seeing who was gaining options and who was losing them.

By late August 1777, Gates was gaining time to concentrate an army.

Stark had gained authority through Bennington.

Morgan’s riflemen were coming north.

Other Continental and militia forces were joining the campaign.

The American army was becoming more capable of using different kinds of soldiers in different terrain.

Burgoyne still had a strong army.

But his supporting operations had begun to fail.

St. Leger’s expedition had retreated.

Bennington had cost him men and supplies.

Howe was not moving north to meet him.

And the American army was growing.

Washington faced a different kind of problem.

He had to defend Philadelphia while strengthening the northern army.

Saratoga emerged from accumulation.

The army at Bemus Heights was larger than the force Gates had commanded at Van Schaick’s Island.

The British position was farther from its original base.

The Mohawk Valley had become a failed avenue of advance.

Bennington had altered Burgoyne’s resources.

American reinforcements were arriving from different parts of the colonies.

And the landscape was becoming increasingly important to what each army could do next.

Six weeks before Burgoyne surrendered, the outcome was still uncertain.

But the balance of options was changing.

Stand on Bemus Heights today and the important thing is not simply to imagine the battles.

It is to notice what had already happened before the first shots were fired.

The Mohawk Valley was connected to the Hudson.

Bennington was connected to Saratoga.

Morgan’s riflemen had come from Washington’s army.

Stark’s militia did not cease to matter after August 16.

Arnold’s relief of Fort Schuyler had consequences far beyond the fort itself.

And Gates did not inherit a finished army.

He inherited a campaign still in motion.

History is not just something to know. It is something to experience.

September 1, 1777: One Name Enters the War

Standing along the Hudson River in September 1777.

British General John Burgoyne is moving south from Canada. Fort Ticonderoga has fallen. American forces are retreating, regrouping, and trying to slow the British advance.

The decisive fighting at Saratoga has not yet begun.

On this day in 1777, Fleetus Hull enlisted in the 4th Massachusetts Regiment. The date appears as a single line in a military record. That line opens the door to years of wartime service.

Hull was an African American soldier from Westfield, Massachusetts. He served under Colonel William Shepard and later appeared on military records from Providence to West Point. After the war, the War Department issued him a 100-acre land warrant.

He was not a famous general. No known portrait survives to put a face beside his name.

His story survives in the military record, scattered across muster rolls and other documents.

Fleetus Hull.

That is where his story begins.

From Massachusetts to the Saratoga Campaign

Hull enlisted at a moment when the American military situation was uncertain.

The 4th Massachusetts Regiment, commanded by Colonel William Shepard, served in Brigadier General John Glover’s brigade. The regiment was part of the American force operating in the Northern Department during the Saratoga campaign.

Hull entered the army just 18 days before the first Battle of Saratoga at Freeman’s Farm on September 19.

He could not have known what lay ahead.

On September 1, the Battles of Saratoga had not happened yet. Hull could not have known that Burgoyne’s army would be stopped, that the British would retreat to Saratoga, or that the campaign would end in a surrender on October 17.

Looking backward, it is easy to see September 1777 as the road to an American victory.

Hull experienced it differently.

He enlisted while British General John Burgoyne was still advancing and before anyone knew how the campaign would end.

Fortune had not yet revealed which way the campaign would turn.

Black Soldiers in the American Army

Hull’s story changes the familiar picture of the Continental soldier.

The American army at Saratoga included Black soldiers serving alongside white soldiers. Some were free. Others were enslaved. Some enlisted voluntarily, while others entered military service through arrangements involving enslavers. Their circumstances varied.

The National Park Service estimates that about five percent of the American troops at Saratoga were Black men. They served in both Continental and militia units.

Hull was one of them.

So was Abijah White, another African American soldier in Shepard’s regiment. White served in Captain Caleb Keep’s Company and was wounded during the Saratoga fighting before later appearing with the regiment at Valley Forge. Carvalho’s research provides the documentary record for both men.

Their presence does not make the Revolution a simple story of racial equality.

Quite the opposite.

Black military service existed alongside slavery and profound inequality. A Black soldier could serve in an army fighting for independence while living in a society that denied freedom and political rights to many people.

That contradiction deserves to remain visible.

What did participation in the fight for independence mean to people who did not yet possess equal freedom themselves?

The Fog at Fish Creek

Six weeks later, Burgoyne’s army was no longer advancing south.

It was retreating toward Saratoga.

By October 11, American General Horatio Gates was pursuing the British army north of Fish Creek. American commanders believed much of Burgoyne’s force had moved toward Fort Edward. Gates ordered Brigadier General John Nixon’s brigade across the creek, with John Glover’s brigade following.

Morning fog covered the water.

Captain Nathan Goodale led an advance party. According to later accounts, his men encountered a British guard through the fog and captured its officer and approximately 35 soldiers without firing a shot.

It is easy to picture the scene.

Fog hung over Fish Creek. Men moved cautiously toward the water. They could hear movement without knowing exactly where the enemy stood.

Then the fog lifted.

British artillery opened fire. The Americans discovered that Burgoyne’s main force was still in position. Nixon’s brigade withdrew across the creek, and the brief advance ended.

Hull’s 4th Massachusetts was part of Glover’s brigade, which followed Nixon’s advance.

But the surviving records do not establish that Hull himself crossed Fish Creek with Goodale or stood at a particular place during the action.

That limit matters.

It would be tempting to place Hull in the fog simply because his regiment was there.

Historical evidence does not always allow that.

His documented service is compelling enough without inventing a moment we cannot prove.

A Soldier on the Move

Hull’s story did not end with Saratoga.

His military record places him at Providence in 1778 and 1779, where he transferred to Captain John Wright’s Light Infantry Company. Other records place him at North Kingston, Bud’s Highlands, West Point, Dobbs Ferry, Windsor, and York Huts. He was still listed on a muster roll in February 1782.

The muster rolls are terse. They give us dates, places, and company names.

Read together, they reveal a soldier who spent years on the move with the army.

For Hull, military service meant time away from home, marching between camps, military discipline, and the dangers of a war whose outcome remained uncertain.

Thousands of men who served in the American Revolution have names that rarely appear in popular histories. Their contribution was measured not only in combat, but in marching, drilling, guarding, supplying, and enduring.

Hull was one of those soldiers.

What Remains at Saratoga

There is no monument at Saratoga National Historical Park that the park’s published site information identifies as specifically commemorating Fleetus Hull.

That absence is worth noticing.

The park preserves the landscape through which his regiment moved. The Wilkinson Trail follows terrain associated with American troops during the campaign and provides a tangible way to experience the battlefield landscape. The park’s interpretation also addresses the service of Black soldiers at Saratoga.

Today, the landscape can seem remarkably quiet.

The slopes still rise. Streams still cut through the ground. Fields and woods still reveal why armies moved, stopped, advanced, and withdrew.

The landscape cannot tell us exactly where Hull stood.

It can show us the ground his regiment had to cross.

That distinction is one of the reasons historic landscapes matter. They cannot answer every question.

But they can help us ask better ones.

Walk the Ground

For travelers interested in African American history, the American Revolution, and the Battles of Saratoga, Hull’s story offers another way to explore Saratoga County.

The point is not to pretend that every step can be traced.

It is to stand in the landscape and understand what the soldiers faced.

Start at the Saratoga National Historical Park Visitor Center

Begin with the park’s exhibits, maps, and interpretive materials. Use them to understand the campaign before heading onto the battlefield.

Check current park operating information before traveling.

Walk the Wilkinson Trail

Follow the trail through the fields, woods, and hills of the battlefield. The park’s interpretation connects the landscape to the soldiers who fought here, including Black soldiers in the American army.

Bring water and wear sturdy footwear appropriate for the season.

Drive the Battlefield Tour Road

Use the Battlefield Tour Road to see how terrain shaped the campaign.

Pause at the Battlefield Tour Road Stops.

Look across the fields.

Consider what an army could see from the high ground, what was hidden by the woods, and how quickly fog or terrain could change a commander’s understanding of the battlefield.

Continue toward the Saratoga Monument and Surrender Site

The Saratoga Monument stands near the area of Burgoyne’s final fortified position.

At the Saratoga Surrender Site, the Hudson River and Fish Creek make the campaign’s geography easier to understand. The site also connects directly to the final chapter of Burgoyne’s campaign and the October 17 surrender.

Spend time in Schuylerville

The village connects the battlefield to the wider Hudson River landscape.

Here, the campaign becomes more than a battlefield story. It becomes a story of roads, farms, homes, waterways, military camps, and communities that lived through the campaign.

The Soldier Behind the Name

Return to the beginning.

September 1, 1777.

One line in a military record.

But that line opened the door to years of service.

Hull marched. He transferred between companies. He lived in military camps. He served through the Saratoga campaign and remained with the army afterward.

Then the record becomes thinner.

There is no known portrait. No famous quotation survives. Even the location of the land warrant issued to him after the war remains unknown.

What remains are fragments.

They are enough to begin.

Stand in the fields of Saratoga National Historical Park and consider what it means to reconstruct a life from muster rolls, military records, and a land warrant.

Hull was not a famous commander.

He did not leave behind a memoir.

But his service helps us see the Saratoga campaign differently.

Generals and armies shaped the Battles of Saratoga. They were also experienced by individual soldiers whose names have largely been lost to the popular story.

Fleetus Hull was one of them.

Not because the record tells us everything.

Because it tells us enough to make us look again.

The American army that confronted British General John Burgoyne at Saratoga did not simply appear on the battlefield.

It was being assembled while Burgoyne was still moving south.

When Horatio Gates assumed command of the Northern Department on August 19, 1777, American forces had already been pushed back from Fort Ticonderoga. Burgoyne was moving south from Canada through the Lake Champlain and Hudson River corridors. The British still held the initiative.

The Americans had to build a force capable of stopping him.

Continental soldiers arrived from George Washington’s army. New England militia gathered. New York militia joined the defense. American Indian allies brought knowledge of the countryside and information about British movements. Independent commands operated beyond Gates’s immediate position.

On September 12, about 8,500 American soldiers began building fortifications at Bemus Heights. Five weeks later, more than 15,000 Americans would witness Burgoyne’s surrender at Saratoga, now Schuylerville.

The army that confronted Burgoyne was therefore not simply Gates’s army.

It was an army being assembled while the campaign was already underway.

The first takeaway: Saratoga was fought by an American army that had to grow, adapt, and organize while the British were still moving.

1. Takeaway: Gates Had to Gather an Army Before He Could Fight a Battle

What the army reveals

When Horatio Gates took command, he inherited an army. But he also inherited an urgent problem.

Burgoyne was moving south.

The Americans needed enough soldiers to stop him.

The force gathering around Gates included Continental soldiers, state and local militia, American Indian allies, and men arriving from different parts of the colonies. They did not have the same training, equipment, experience, obligations, or reasons for being there.

Men had to be recruited, marched, supplied, organized, positioned, and fed. Fortifications had to be built. Roads and river crossings had to be watched. Information had to move between commanders.

Gates did not have the luxury of waiting for a finished army. Every day Burgoyne remained on the Hudson narrowed the Americans’ choices.

On September 12, about 8,500 American soldiers began building defenses at Bemus Heights and the surrounding fields.

By then, the army was still being assembled while Burgoyne was moving south.

Why it matters at Saratoga

Gates did not create this army by himself.

His importance was in concentrating and commanding a force that was still changing.

The contrast with Burgoyne is revealing. The British army had begun the campaign with the initiative. By late summer, distance, supply problems, losses, and the collapse of supporting operations were narrowing Burgoyne’s options. The failure of Barry St. Leger’s expedition through the Mohawk Valley and the defeat at Bennington both weakened the larger British strategy.

The Americans were gathering men and resources from several directions.

Every regiment that arrived, every militia company that remained, every scout who brought information, and every wagon that delivered supplies added another piece to the force gathering along the Hudson.

Victory was not certain.

But the force capable of fighting for it was coming together.

At Bemus Heights, look at the earthworks as evidence of an army preparing under pressure.

These were not permanent walls waiting for a battle. They were the physical result of decisions made by soldiers who knew a British army was approaching but did not know what would happen next.

Takeaway

2. Takeaway: Schuyler Lost Command. He Did Not Leave the Fight.

What the army reveals

Philip Schuyler’s removal on August 19 was a personal and political blow.

Congress replaced him with Gates after the retreat from Ticonderoga and the criticism that followed. Yet Schuyler’s usefulness to the American cause did not end with his military command.

He remained involved in the war.

Most importantly for this story, he continued serving as an American Indian Commissioner. He had already been involved in the American effort to maintain relationships with the Six Nations during a war that was dividing the Confederacy. He continued in that role for the rest of the war.

Schuyler had lost the command he believed he had earned. He had not lost his knowledge of the people, politics, and geography of the Northern Department.

That work depended on relationships, negotiation, and knowledge of people and places that a military headquarters could not simply manufacture.

Why it matters at Saratoga

The connection between Schuyler and the army at Saratoga should be stated carefully.

Schuyler did not command the army that fought the Battles of Saratoga. Gates did.

But Schuyler remained part of the political and diplomatic network supporting the American war effort.

In mid-September, representatives of American Indian nations met with American officials in Albany. On September 20, approximately 150 Oneida and Tuscarora warriors joined Gates’s army at Bemus Heights, adding to the Stockbridge Mohican presence already serving with the Americans. The National Park Service identifies their work as including scouting and intelligence gathering.

The evidence supports Schuyler’s continuing diplomatic role. It does not require claiming that he personally recruited every warrior who arrived at Bemus Heights.

That distinction matters.

Schuyler’s story can be followed beyond the battlefield.

His country estate was burned during Burgoyne’s retreat. Today, Schuyler’s Saratoga Estates helps make the campaign tangible in another way.

The war reached his property.

It reached his family.

It reached his political reputation.

And yet he continued serving in another capacity.

The physical landscape makes that story difficult to keep at a distance.

Takeaway

Schuyler’s military command ended. His work for the American cause did not.

3. Takeaway: Washington Had to Decide Which Experienced Soldiers He Could Spare

What the army reveals

The army gathering at Saratoga was not built entirely from local resources.

George Washington sent experienced Continental soldiers north.

Among them was Colonel Daniel Morgan, who brought approximately 400 riflemen drawn from the Virginia and Pennsylvania lines of Washington’s army. Gates augmented Morgan’s corps with approximately 300 light infantry under Major Henry Dearborn.

These were not interchangeable troops.

Morgan’s riflemen carried weapons valued for accuracy and range, although rifles were slower to reload and generally lacked bayonets.

Dearborn’s light infantry carried muskets and bayonets and were selected for their ability to move rapidly through broken terrain.

Gates now had two kinds of soldiers who could be used differently in the broken country around Freeman’s Farm.

Why it matters at Saratoga

Morgan’s men became some of the first American troops committed at Freeman’s Farm on September 19. At Benedict Arnold’s urging, Gates agreed to oppose the advancing British column, and Morgan’s corps was among the first troops sent forward.

But there was a larger strategic question behind their presence.

Washington needed experienced soldiers around Philadelphia.

Gates needed experienced soldiers in the Northern Department.

Washington could not have everything.

Experienced troops were scarce. Commanders had to decide where they could make the greatest difference.

It would be too strong to say that sending Morgan north caused Philadelphia to fall. The decision instead illustrates the strategic dilemma facing the American command in 1777.

At Freeman’s Farm, look at the woods and broken ground.

The terrain helps explain why riflemen and light infantry could be used effectively there. The National Park Service describes Morgan’s riflemen moving through the wooded terrain and engaging British forces near Freeman’s Farm.

The landscape was not scenery around the battle.

It helped determine which soldiers could be useful.

Takeaway

Washington could not send every experienced soldier north. The men he did send became important to the fight at Saratoga.

4. Takeaway: The Soldiers Arriving at Saratoga Brought Earlier Campaigns With Them

What the army reveals

Not every American soldier at Saratoga was new to war.

Some had already experienced the Revolution’s hardest campaigns.

New England Continental soldiers had served in earlier operations, including the campaigns around Trenton and Princeton. Others had experienced the retreat from Ticonderoga and the difficult weeks that followed.

The experience varied from regiment to regiment. Some formations had served with Washington. Others had already fought in the Northern Campaign. The 2nd New Hampshire, for example, fought at Hubbardton, Freeman’s Farm, and Bemus Heights.

These men brought more than weapons and equipment.

They knew what marching under pressure felt like.

They knew how quickly an army could retreat.

They had lived through shortages, uncertainty, camp life, and battlefield confusion.

That experience did not guarantee victory.

But it mattered.

Why it matters at Saratoga

The army gathering at Bemus Heights had little time to become a functioning fighting force.

The men had to build defenses, scout, hold ground, respond to British attacks, and remain in the field.

John Glover’s Massachusetts brigade provides one example of how previous service became part of the Northern Army’s experience. Other Massachusetts regiments also carried service histories from earlier campaigns into Saratoga.

The point is not that veterans automatically made better soldiers.

It is that an army can carry experience forward.

The men arriving at Saratoga had already learned things that could not be taught in a few weeks of hurried preparation.

Stillwater was not simply a place where troops gathered.

It was part of the landscape through which an experienced army was being rebuilt.

The ground connects the retreat from Ticonderoga, the arrival of reinforcements, and the defenses that would soon confront Burgoyne.

Takeaway

The American army brought earlier campaigns with it. Experience arrived at Saratoga alongside the reinforcements.

5. Takeaway: Lincoln and the Pawlet Expedition Made Burgoyne Fight a Wider War

What the army reveals

Benjamin Lincoln’s operation around Pawlet, Vermont, reveals another side of American mobilization.

His force did not simply march toward Gates’s main army.

It operated against Burgoyne’s communications and exposed positions in his rear.

In September, Lincoln’s force gathered at Pawlet before sending detachments toward British positions around Lake George, Mount Independence, and Skenesborough. The operations captured prisoners and supplies and forced Burgoyne to contend with American forces beyond his main line of advance.

This was warfare beyond the battlefield.

Armies depended on roads, boats, wagons, stores, food, and communications.

Pawlet was more than a staging ground. It was part of the American effort to make Burgoyne look in several directions at once.

Why it matters at Saratoga

Pawlet helps explain why the Saratoga Campaign cannot be understood by looking only at Bemus Heights.

American resistance was spread across Vermont and New York.

Lincoln’s force did not need to stand beside Gates to affect Burgoyne.

It created another problem for the British commander.

Where were the Americans?

Which roads were safe?

Which posts could be defended?

How much force could Burgoyne spare?

Those pressures accumulated.

By October, Burgoyne’s army was increasingly constrained by American forces operating around it. New Hampshire and Vermont militia helped close routes of escape while additional American militia blocked the way north.

Then look at the distance.

The campaign becomes something different.

It becomes a network of roads, rivers, forts, farms, supply routes, and communities.

The American army did not have to stand in one place to affect Burgoyne.

6. Takeaway: Stark Showed That Cooperation Did Not Require One Perfect Chain of Command

What the army reveals

John Stark presents another complication.

His victory at Bennington gave him considerable authority and demonstrated the power of independent militia forces.

The American military structure in the Northern Campaign was not simple.

Continental soldiers operated within one command structure.

State militia had their own political and military authorities.

Independent commanders retained authority over their forces.

Local militia answered to local circumstances.

Stark’s New Hampshire commission was understood to give him independence from Continental command. That independence remained important even as American commanders sought to coordinate his forces with the larger campaign.

Yet these forces could cooperate.

They did not have to become one perfectly integrated army before they could affect Burgoyne.

Why it matters at Saratoga

That flexibility mattered during the final stage of the campaign.

After October 7, Burgoyne retreated toward Saratoga, today’s Schuylerville. American forces tightened around him. Stark’s command moved to help close the northern escape route, while other American forces controlled positions around the Hudson.

This was not simply Gates issuing orders to every American soldier in the region.

It was a collection of forces converging on a common problem.

That distinction helps explain the character of the American army.

Its structure could be frustrating.

It could also be flexible.

The river was a transportation route, an obstacle, a military boundary, and a way of organizing forces.

The landscape makes the divided command structure easier to understand.

The American forces did not need one perfectly unified command structure to work toward the same objective.

7. Takeaway: Saratoga Required Different Soldiers to Do Different Things

What the army reveals

By September and October, the American force had become a layered army.

Continental brigades supplied experienced infantry.

Militia reinforced Continental formations and, in some cases, served alongside them.

Other militia formations operated more independently.

Morgan’s riflemen supplied specialized firepower.

Dearborn’s light infantry provided mobility and close support.

American Indian allies contributed scouting and intelligence.

Local militia contributed knowledge of the countryside.

Commanders including Gates, Benedict Arnold, Lincoln, Stark, Morgan, and others brought different experiences and judgments to the campaign.

The army’s strength was not that every soldier was alike.

It was that different soldiers could do different jobs.

Why it matters at Saratoga

The combination becomes especially visible at Freeman’s Farm.

At Arnold’s urging, Gates agreed to oppose the advancing British column. Morgan’s riflemen were among the first American troops sent forward, operating with the light infantry and other American forces.

The same principle remained important on October 7.

Riflemen could exploit distance and concealment.

Light infantry could move quickly through broken ground.

Line infantry could hold formations.

Militia could reinforce positions and provide manpower.

American Indian scouts could gather information about movement through the countryside.

No single component explains the American victory.

The American army had become useful because different kinds of soldiers could be used for different problems.

The strength of the Saratoga army lay partly in its variety. Different soldiers brought different skills to the same landscape.

What if the strength of the Saratoga army was not one kind of soldier, but its ability to make different kinds of soldiers work together?

The Larger Takeaway

The American army at Saratoga becomes more interesting when it is treated as something built, rather than something that simply appeared.

In August 1777, there was no guarantee that Gates would have enough men to stop Burgoyne. There was no certainty that militia would remain. There was no guarantee that independent commanders would cooperate.

Washington had to decide which experienced Continental troops he could spare.

Lincoln had to gather men and threaten Burgoyne’s rear.

Morgan and Dearborn had to make different weapons and tactics useful in the same landscape.

Schuyler, despite losing his military command, continued serving the American war effort through his diplomatic responsibilities. American Indian allies brought knowledge and skills that the Continental Army could not simply manufacture. Soldiers who had fought in earlier campaigns arrived with experience that mattered when the army began building its defenses at Bemus Heights.

And all of it happened across a landscape measured in rivers, roads, mountains, forts, farms, and miles.

The people living through it did not know that Saratoga would become a turning point.

They knew only what was in front of them.

At Bemus Heights, Freeman’s Farm, Stillwater, Schuylerville, and along the Hudson and Mohawk valleys, pieces of that story can still be followed.

The final takeaway is simple: before there was a victory at Saratoga, there was an army that had to be built.

To walk this landscape today is to see not only where the Americans fought, but how they became capable of fighting there at all.

Setting the Stage: August 30, 1777

By August 30, 1777, British General John Burgoyne could no longer treat Bennington as a setback that would simply pass.

His campaign had begun with confidence and considerable military success. His army had advanced south from Canada through the Lake Champlain corridor, captured Fort Ticonderoga, and continued toward the Hudson River. But the farther Burgoyne moved, the more difficult the campaign became.

On August 16, a detachment Burgoyne had sent toward Bennington, Vermont, in search of horses, cattle, wagons, and supplies was defeated at Walloomsac, New York. Nearly 900 of Burgoyne’s men were killed, wounded, or captured, seriously weakening his army.

Two weeks later, Burgoyne wrote to American Major General Horatio Gates about the treatment of provincial soldiers serving with the British army. His language was formal, restrained, and unmistakably threatening:

“It is with great concern I find myself obliged to add to this application a complaint of the bad treatment the provincial soldiers in the king’s service received after the affair at Bennington...”

Burgoyne warned Gates that he expected an explanation and threatened retaliation if such treatment continued.

The letter was more than a complaint between two generals.

It opens a window onto a war reaching into the communities through which Burgoyne was moving.

At Bennington, the Revolution was not simply British against American.

Neighbors were fighting neighbors. Friends found themselves on opposite sides. Political choices had become personal.

And that mattered for what came next.

Washington Announces a Victory

Six days after the Battle of Bennington, George Washington announced the American victory in his General Orders of August 22.

“The Commander in Chief has the happiness,” Washington wrote, “to inform the army, of a signal victory obtained at the northward.”

He described a detachment of about 1,500 men sent toward Bennington and Brigadier General John Stark’s force of about 2,000, “mostly Militia,” which attacked and defeated them. Washington reported prisoners, artillery, baggage, and wounded among the American gains.

For Washington, Bennington was a military success worth announcing to the Continental Army.

For Burgoyne, it was a serious setback.

The expedition had been intended in part to gather horses and supplies. Instead, Burgoyne lost men and artillery and failed to obtain the resources his army needed. The National Park Service describes the loss of almost 900 men at Walloomsac as a serious weakening of Burgoyne’s army.

Burgoyne was losing men, artillery, horses, and supplies. Each loss narrowed his choices.

When the Revolution Became Personal

Military reports can make Bennington appear straightforward.

An army advanced.

Another army attacked.

One side won.

The people who experienced the battle knew it was more complicated.

One of the clearest examples involved Royalist officer John Peters and American Captain Jeremiah Post.

Peters later recalled that, during the fighting, Post attacked him with a bayonet. Peters recognized him as an old schoolmate and childhood playmate. Post was also a cousin of Peters’s wife.

The bayonet entered Peters’s body but was deflected by the bone.

Peters then killed Post.

In his account, Peters remembered the violence and the relationship in the same breath. He wrote that he “felt regret at being obliged to destroy him.”

The men were not strangers.

They had grown up together.

And on the battlefield near Bennington, political allegiance placed them on opposite sides.

That is one reason the Revolution can be difficult to understand through troop movements alone.

The conflict had entered homes, families, friendships, and communities.

The Treatment of Prisoners

Burgoyne’s August 30 letter points toward another uncomfortable reality.

He complained that provincial soldiers serving with the British had been mistreated after Bennington. He claimed that some had been refused quarter and warned Gates of retaliation. His letter also sought the return of baggage and servants belonging to captured officers.

The evidence surrounding prisoners at Bennington reveals a more complicated picture than either side’s official language suggests.

There was violence.

There was suffering.

There was also an effort to care for wounded prisoners.

The experience of German troops was not identical to that of Royalist soldiers. German troops were foreign soldiers serving with Burgoyne. Royalist Americans occupied a particularly complicated position because many were fighting in a conflict that had divided their own communities.

That distinction mattered, but it was not absolute.

The surviving accounts reveal confusion, fear, violence, and acts of care existing alongside one another.

A map can show where the armies stood. It cannot show what the war did to the people living there.

From Bennington to Saratoga

Bennington did not determine the Battles of Saratoga by itself.

It changed the circumstances in which Burgoyne continued his campaign.

The expedition had cost him men and artillery and had failed to secure the horses and supplies he needed. Just as important, the defeat demonstrated that the countryside was not as reliably sympathetic to the British cause as Burgoyne had hoped.

Bennington was only one part of a much larger campaign.

While Burgoyne struggled in the Hudson corridor, British Lieutenant Colonel Barry St. Leger’s expedition was failing in the Mohawk Valley. St. Leger had been attempting to capture Fort Schuyler and advance toward the Hudson.

That effort also failed.

On August 22, St. Leger abandoned the siege of Fort Schuyler and began retreating toward Canada after the situation in his camp deteriorated and American forces under Benedict Arnold approached.

Meanwhile, on August 19, American Major General Horatio Gates had replaced General Philip Schuyler as commander of the Northern Department.

Burgoyne was increasingly isolated.

The geography mattered.

Burgoyne’s army was moving south from Canada through the Lake Champlain and Hudson River corridors. St. Leger’s force had advanced east through the Mohawk Valley. The broader British strategy depended on controlling this inland corridor and isolating New England from the other American colonies.

Instead, the British operations were coming apart.

The campaign still had weeks to run.

Neither side knew how it would end.

There was fortune in the American recovery, but there was also misfortune for Burgoyne. Those forces were expressed through decisions, delays, defeats, and opportunities that commanders could not fully control.

The Landscape Between Bennington and Saratoga

Today, it is easy to look at a map and compress these events into a few lines.

Bennington.

Fort Schuyler.

The Hudson River.

Saratoga.

But the campaign unfolded across a much larger landscape.

Burgoyne’s army entered New York from the north, moving through the Lake Champlain corridor toward the Hudson River. St. Leger’s force advanced through the Mohawk Valley. American resistance disrupted both movements.

Rivers shaped the campaign. Roads determined how quickly wagons and artillery could move. Forts blocked routes. Communities became sources of information, recruits, resistance, and support.

By late August, geography was helping determine what armies could and could not accomplish.

That is why the landscape matters.

The fighting that came later did not emerge from a blank map.

It emerged from a campaign already shaped by rivers, roads, supply lines, fortified positions, local resistance, and the decisions of people who could not know the outcome.

Why Saratoga Matters

Today, Saratoga National Historical Park preserves the landscape where many of those consequences eventually came together.

The Battles of Saratoga were fought at Freeman’s Farm on September 19 and Bemus Heights on October 7. The siege followed, ending with Burgoyne’s surrender on October 17. The National Park Service places those events within a much larger campaign that began with Burgoyne’s invasion from Canada and included the fighting at Hubbardton, Bennington, and Oriskany.

For visitors, that larger story matters because once the connections are understood, Saratoga looks different.

The Saratoga Campaign was never confined to one battlefield.

It stretched across northern New York and Vermont, through the Hudson River corridor and the Mohawk Valley, connecting communities and landscapes that can still be visited today.

At Saratoga National Historical Park, visitors can walk the ground where armies maneuvered, examine the terrain that shaped military decisions, and consider the human stories that maps cannot fully capture. The park preserves the battlefield, Victory Woods, the Saratoga Monument, and the Surrender Site, with the Battlefield Tour Road and grounds open for visitors.

Bennington helps make that landscape more understandable.

It reminds visitors that the Battles of Saratoga did not emerge from nowhere.

They were the consequence of a campaign already shaped by military defeats, logistical problems, political disagreements, local resistance, and deeply divided communities.

And those consequences were carried by people.

John Peters carried his memory of Jeremiah Post into the aftermath of Bennington.

Burgoyne carried his anger and concern into his correspondence with Gates.

American soldiers and civilians carried the consequences of political choices into communities already divided by the war.

By the time the armies met at Freeman’s Farm, the campaign had already been shaped by what had happened hundreds of miles away.

That is what the preserved landscape allows visitors to see.

The fields are peaceful now.

The choices made there were anything but.

For the History-Loving Explorer, that is the invitation.

Walk the ground.

Look beyond the battlefield.

Follow the roads and rivers.

Consider the people who made choices without knowing what those choices would mean.

On this ground, the connections between place, choice, and consequence are still visible.

The defense of Fort Schuyler was a crucial part of the interconnected Northern Campaign of 1777. Its story reveals how geography, the siege, Oriskany, Haudenosaunee political divisions, Learned’s Brigade, and Benedict Arnold’s deception combined to weaken St. Leger’s expedition and contribute to the larger British failure.

The award winning Musicians of Ma’alwyck perform 18th century music on flute, violin, cello, keyboard, and guitar, joined by renowned soprano Vedrana Kalas. The Hudson River was carrying more than water.

It carried soldiers, supplies, orders, rumors and messengers. On August 28, 1777, some of the soldiers Horatio Gates needed were still on their way.

At Van Schaick’s Island, where the Mohawk River meets the Hudson near Albany, Gates was trying to turn a battered collection of Continental soldiers and militia into an army capable of stopping John Burgoyne.

His headquarters was not a fortress.

It was the Van Schaick family home, a substantial brick mansion that had become headquarters of the Continental Army’s Northern Department. The house served as headquarters from August 18 to September 8, 1777. It was here that Gates assumed command on August 19.

On this particular day, Gates wrote to George Washington.

His letter reveals something easy to miss when looking backward from the American victory several weeks later.

The army that would fight the Battles of Saratoga was still being assembled.

Gates Was Still Waiting for Morgan

Gates’s August 28 letter was remarkably candid.

He had received Washington’s letter of August 20 and enclosed news from Benedict Arnold that the British and German force at Fort Stanwix had retreated, leaving behind tents, provisions, ammunition, baggage, prisoners and deserters.

Gates believed the retreat would damage British influence among American Indian nations in the western theater.

Then came the less encouraging news.

“Neither the Riflemen, nor more than 400 of the Militia, have yet arrived.”

Gates believed the northerly winds had delayed Colonel Daniel Morgan and his riflemen on the Hudson.

Weather mattered.

A general could issue an order. Washington could send Morgan north. Congress could authorize troops.

But men still had to travel by road and river.

Morgan reached Albany on August 29 and was directed to move toward Loudon’s Ferry, where Gates had prepared a place for his corps.

On August 28, however, Gates was still waiting.

That one-day difference matters. It shows how uncertain the situation remained.

The army that would soon confront Burgoyne was not sitting intact in one camp. It was arriving in pieces.

An Army Needed Food, Too

Another Gates letter, written the previous day, reveals a different problem.

Salt meat.

Gates had learned from Jacob Cuyler, the Northern Department’s commissary, that there was no salt meat in store. The army’s supply had been lost at Ticonderoga. Gates asked Washington to obtain more provisions immediately, preferably pork.

It was an ordinary military request.

It also makes the campaign easier to understand.

An army needed food before it could fight.

It needed meat and flour. It needed ammunition, shoes, blankets, wagons and boats. It needed people to move all of those things.

The Continental Army had suffered badly during the retreat from Ticonderoga. Now it was being refitted.

A small piece of paper preserved by the Museum of the American Revolution makes that process tangible.

On August 25, Massachusetts soldiers Phineas Morgan and Palatiah Allen received French muskets and bayonets in exchange for their worn weapons while encamped on Van Schaick’s Island. Both served in the 12th Massachusetts Regiment. The museum notes that they later used those weapons during the fighting at Saratoga.

A soldier receiving a new musket does not usually make the history books.

But two soldiers receiving new muskets tells part of the story.

An army was being rebuilt through thousands of ordinary transactions like this one.

The Militia Were Coming, Too

Gates was not relying solely on Continental soldiers.

Across the region, militia were being called out. The response was uneven.

On August 28, New Jersey Governor William Livingston wrote Washington that he had ordered 1,000 militia to relieve New York militia guarding posts along the Hudson. The intention was to free those New York men for service against Burgoyne.

Livingston was realistic about what might happen.

He doubted that more than 300 of the 1,000 men would actually appear, and he did not expect even those men for several weeks.

That difference between the number ordered and the number likely to arrive tells an important story.

An army on paper was not an army in the field.

Men had to leave farms and workshops. Officers had to organize them. Horses had to be found. Roads had to be traveled. Food had to be supplied.

And all of it had to happen while a British army was moving south.

Benjamin Lincoln and the Wider American Response

While Gates worked from Van Schaick’s Island, Major General Benjamin Lincoln was coordinating another part of the American response.

Lincoln had been operating in Vermont and the Hampshire Grants, raising militia and watching Burgoyne’s communications. Gates’s August 22 correspondence shows that Lincoln’s brigade was with John Stark at Bennington while Arnold had gone west toward Fort Stanwix.

The American victory at Bennington on August 16 had helped restore confidence after the disasters at Ticonderoga. It also weakened Burgoyne’s army.

The response to Burgoyne was therefore spread across several places.

Gates held the main force near the Hudson. Lincoln operated toward Vermont. Arnold was returning from the relief of Fort Stanwix. Morgan was coming north. Militia were being summoned from surrounding states.

The American response was not one army sitting in one camp waiting for a battle.

It was a network of forces, supplies and communications gradually coming together.

The Battles of Saratoga did not begin with soldiers marching onto a battlefield. They depended on decisions about where men should go, how they would get there and whether there would be enough food and ammunition when they arrived.

Van Schaick Mansion: Headquarters on the River

Today, Van Schaick Mansion still stands in Cohoes.

Its brick walls preserve a place where military decisions were made during one of the most consequential campaigns of the American Revolution. The mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is maintained by the General Peter Gansevoort Chapter, NSDAR. Tours are available by appointment.

The location explains much of its importance.

The Mohawk and Hudson Rivers meet nearby.

For an eighteenth-century army, that meant transportation, communication and access to Albany. The rivers were not simply scenery. They were routes along which soldiers and supplies could move.

Inside the headquarters, officers dealt with the practical business of war. Orders had to be written. Reports arrived from distant posts. Maps had to be studied. Messengers carried information between the army and its commanders.

Outside were soldiers, horses, wagons and supplies.

This was headquarters in the eighteenth-century sense. It was a house surrounded by the machinery of an army.

Kościuszko and the Ground Ahead

Among the officers connected with the Northern Department was Tadeusz Kościuszko, the Polish military engineer who would become central to the American defensive position at Saratoga.

Congress had assigned Kościuszko to the Northern Department earlier in 1777. After the American retreat from Ticonderoga, his engineering expertise became increasingly important.

His greatest contribution at Saratoga, however, still lay ahead.

The National Park Service credits Kościuszko with designing the American defenses at Saratoga to take advantage of the terrain along the Hudson River Valley.

Where could artillery fire? Where could a defensive line anchor itself?

Those questions would soon matter at Bemus Heights.

On August 28, however, that future was still ahead.

At Van Schaick’s Island, Gates was still building the force that would occupy that ground.

Fortune and Misfortune

There was plenty of both.

Misfortune had already stripped the Northern Army of supplies and equipment at Ticonderoga. Soldiers had retreated south. Confidence had suffered.

But fortune was beginning to turn.

The American victory at Bennington weakened Burgoyne’s army. The British retreat from Fort Stanwix was another setback. Gates believed that defeat would also damage British influence among American Indian nations in the western theater.

Morgan’s riflemen were coming.

Militia were being called out. Food was being gathered. Weapons were being issued. Lincoln was assembling another force.

Slowly, the pieces were arriving.

None of this guaranteed victory.

On August 28, 1777, the outcome was not inevitable.

What Visitors Can Still See

The value of Van Schaick Mansion is that the story does not exist only in books.

The mansion survives.

The rivers still meet nearby.

The geography that made the site valuable to military planners remains part of the landscape.

For visitors interested in the Saratoga Campaign, the mansion offers a different way to begin the story.

Before visiting the battlefield, it is worth seeing where the army was assembled. The river, the headquarters and the supply system explain much of what happened later.

A visit to Van Schaick Mansion can be paired with the wider Saratoga Campaign landscape and Saratoga National Historical Park. The contrast is revealing. At the battlefield, visitors see where soldiers fought. At Van Schaick Mansion, they can consider the decisions, supplies and people that made those battles possible.

The fighting was only the most visible part of the campaign.

Behind it stood roads, rivers, farms, warehouses, mills, boats and thousands of people moving men and supplies.

The battlefield was the visible end of a much larger system.

The Army That Was Still Being Built

On August 28, 1777, Horatio Gates was still waiting.

Morgan’s riflemen were delayed. Militia were arriving slowly. Salt meat was urgently needed. Weapons were being issued. Lincoln was gathering men in Vermont. Kościuszko was part of the engineering story that would soon shape the American defensive position.

Inside a brick mansion near the junction of two rivers, American officers were trying to make sense of it all.

Six weeks later, Burgoyne would surrender.

But that outcome was not inevitable on August 28.

It depended on hundreds of decisions. Some were made by generals. Others were made by governors, commissaries, engineers and ordinary soldiers who left their homes and joined the army.

The American Revolution was a war for independence, a civil war and a world war. It affected millions from Canada to the Caribbean and beyond, and few escaped its violence. The British Army occupied major population centers across the colonies, including New York City, which remained under British control for more than seven years. Ken Burns has described the Revolution as one of the most important events in human history, arguing that it transformed people from subjects into citizens and helped set democratic revolutions in motion around the world.

At Saratoga, however, the question on August 28 was much more immediate.

Could an army be assembled quickly enough?

The answer was still being worked out.

The victory at Saratoga depended on work that began long before the first shots were fired.

It began with an army that had to be built.

And standing at Van Schaick Mansion today, a visitor can still ask:

What would it have looked like on that August day, when the army that would face Burgoyne was still taking shape?

The Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum hosts a History Trivia Night on Tuesday, September 1st from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, inspired by America’s 250th. Question categories include the American Revolution, the American Presidency, and local history. Your host is Sean Kelleher, Saratoga 250 Vice Chair and Town of Saratoga Historian.

Saratoga remains one of the most revealing—and most accessible—Revolutionary War landscapes in the country, especially as the Semiquincentennial approaches. What distinguishes it is not a single landmark, but a connected terrain that must be experienced in motion. The 1777 campaign does not sit in one place. It unfolds across communities, each holding part of the story.

The name “Saratoga” can obscure as much as it clarifies. The Town of Saratoga, established in 1788, is one of the county’s original municipalities. Stillwater contains the core battlefield at Freeman’s Farm and Bemus Heights. Saratoga Springs developed later around mineral springs and horse racing, not the fighting itself. Nearby communities—Schuylerville, Victory, Easton, Greenwich, and Northumberland—frame the campaign’s final phases: siege, retreat, and surrender.

To move through this region is to follow a geographic narrative. The Hudson River corridor still shapes the experience much as it shaped the campaign. Roads trace old routes. River crossings and elevations remain legible. The landscape holds together. Saratoga is not a single destination but a continuous field of action, where the story emerges through distance and direction.

The Battles of Saratoga—Freeman’s Farm on September 19 and Bemus Heights on October 7—along with the siege that followed from October 10 to 16 and the surrender on October 17, form only part of a wider campaign marked by smaller clashes and constant movement. Outcomes here were never assured. They turned, often, on moments of fortune and misfortune—weather, timing, terrain, and human decision.

This campaign unfolded within the larger American Revolution, also known as the American War of Independence (1775–1783), a complex international conflict involving thirteen colonies seeking independence from British rule. Neighbors chose sides. American Indians, enslaved and free people, and European allies all shaped the course of events. Moments like the Battles of Saratoga helped shift that struggle, drawing in foreign support and moving a fractured resistance closer to nationhood.

The ground still carries that story. Not as a single point, but as a connected landscape—one that asks to be followed.

On August 26, 1777, British General John Burgoyne had a problem that had nothing to do with a battlefield.

Burgoyne commanded the British army moving south through New York during the Saratoga Campaign. His army included British regulars and thousands of German soldiers, including Brunswick troops commanded by Major General Friedrich Riedesel.

The army needed to keep moving toward Albany. But heavy rain had made the roads difficult, and the wagons carrying food, ammunition, and other supplies could not simply be pushed through the mud.

Burgoyne warned Riedesel that the roads were probably so bad that carts should carry only half their usual loads. The rest could be left behind rather than risk getting the wagons stuck and losing the horses.

It was a small decision about moving supplies. It also shows how the Saratoga Campaign was beginning to change.

An Army Could Move Only as Fast as Its Supplies

Burgoyne’s objective was Albany. The British hoped to take control of the Hudson River corridor and divide New England from the rest of the American rebellion.

By August, moving the army was becoming as important as fighting with it.

Burgoyne needed carts, horses, oxen, boats, roads, bridges, food, ammunition, and artillery transport. His soldiers also needed forage, the food used to feed their horses.

American forces had already destroyed bridges, obstructed roads, and removed resources that might have helped the British advance.

Heavy rain made those problems worse.

The U.S. Army’s historical study of the campaign describes a transportation system under considerable strain. Horses promised from Canada arrived in insufficient numbers, while carts and animals used to pull them struggled over rough roads.

The British army was carrying an enormous supply system with it.

Every cannon needed transport. Every regiment needed food. Horses needed forage. Wagons needed roads.

A damaged bridge or a wagon stuck in the mud could cost more than a few hours.

It could cost a day.

The Hudson River Was Not a Highway

Burgoyne’s army had reached the Hudson River expecting the waterway to help move the campaign south.

The river could carry supplies, but it also had to be crossed.

Moving an army with its artillery, baggage, provisions, and animals required temporary bridges, boats, engineering work, and time.

Burgoyne eventually used a bridge of bateaux, the flat-bottomed boats used to carry supplies, to cross the Hudson River near Saratoga on September 13. That crossing committed his army to its final advance toward Albany.

The geography mattered.

The Hudson River was a transportation route, but it was also an obstacle. The roads connecting the river with Fort Edward, Lake George, and the settlements to the south were part of the same system.

Rain could interfere with all of it.

Bennington Had Already Cost Burgoyne Time

The weather did not create Burgoyne’s difficulties by itself.

It made existing problems harder.

The expedition toward Bennington had been intended to obtain horses, cattle, wagons, and other supplies. Instead, the British and German force sent toward Bennington suffered a major defeat, losing nearly 900 men and four cannon.

It also cost Burgoyne time.

The failed expedition meant fewer men and supplies for Burgoyne’s main army. It also gave the Americans time to strengthen their position.

Burgoyne’s supply line stretched north. His horses and other animals were under pressure. His transportation system was struggling.

American resistance was growing.

Burgoyne’s problems were not always dramatic. Sometimes they were a broken cart, a flooded crossing, a tired horse, or another day without enough supplies.

The Americans Were Buying Time

Weather was only part of the story.

American forces had already shown what delay could accomplish. Roads were obstructed. Bridges were destroyed. Resources were removed or destroyed rather than left for Burgoyne’s army.

Those measures gave the American army time to withdraw, reorganize, and gather strength.

Rain did something similar without firing a shot.

It slowed the wagons.

Mud slowed the artillery.

Floodwater disrupted crossings.

Each delay gave the Americans more time to strengthen their position.

The situation was changing quickly.

On August 19, American General Horatio Gates took command of the Northern Department, the American military command responsible for the northern part of the war. He replaced General Philip Schuyler.

Four days later, news arrived that British General Barry St. Leger had abandoned the siege of Fort Schuyler in the Mohawk Valley and retreated toward Canada. St. Leger’s expedition had been another part of the British plan to advance into New York.

That plan was now breaking apart.

Burgoyne was increasingly operating without the support that the larger British strategy had required.

His army was still trying to move supplies through difficult country while the American position was becoming stronger.

The Landscape Was Part of the Campaign

This is one reason Washington County deserves attention when visitors explore the Saratoga Campaign.

The story is not confined to battlefields.

It is also found along roads, rivers, farms, bridges, and crossings.

At Fort Miller, Burgoyne established his headquarters at Duer’s House. His army spent critical weeks dealing with the consequences of Bennington, the loss of supplies and horses, and the difficulty of moving provisions forward.

The Hudson River was both transportation route and obstacle.

The roads connecting the river with Fort Edward and Lake George were essential to Burgoyne’s supply system.

And rain could interfere with all of them.

The evidence does not support imagining August 26 as one continuous downpour covering every mile of the campaign. What the sources do show is repeated heavy rain, swollen waterways, deteriorating roads, and a supply system already under considerable pressure.

That distinction matters. The landscape tells us what the army had to deal with. The documents tell us how those conditions affected decisions.

What Visitors Can Still See

Today, the landscape looks peaceful.

The Hudson River moves past fields and wooded hills. Modern roads make distances seem manageable. Automobiles cross bridges in seconds.

In 1777, the same geography could consume hours or days.

For visitors interested in understanding the campaign through landscape, Washington County offers an unusually revealing section of Burgoyne’s route.

Start near Fort Miller

Consider the Hudson River not simply as scenery but as a military transportation corridor. Think about what it meant to move artillery, wagons, provisions, animals, and thousands of people through this landscape.

Follow the Hudson south

Pay attention to roads, hills, crossings, and low-lying ground. Modern infrastructure conceals some of the difficulties faced by eighteenth-century armies, but the basic geography remains.

Continue toward Schuylerville

The village sits within the landscape through which Burgoyne eventually advanced. Here, visitors can connect the logistical problems of August with the fighting that came later.

Visit Saratoga National Historical Park

The preserved landscape helps visitors understand the relationship between geography and military decision-making.

On September 13, Burgoyne crossed to the west side of the Hudson River near present-day Schuylerville and committed his army to the final advance toward Albany.

Visit Schuyler’s Saratoga Estates

The estate provides another way to consider what the campaign meant beyond marching armies and battlefield maps.

The British burned the original Schuyler residence and outbuildings during their retreat. Philip Schuyler rebuilt the present house later in 1777.

The Days Before the Battles of Saratoga

On August 26, Burgoyne was still trying to move forward.

He had not yet crossed the Hudson River for his final advance.

The Battles of Saratoga were still weeks away.

The outcome was not yet known.

But the campaign was accumulating consequences.

Bennington had cost Burgoyne men and supplies.

St. Leger’s retreat had removed an important part of the British strategy.

American forces were gaining time to reorganize.

Burgoyne’s transportation system was struggling.

And the weather was making each logistical problem harder to solve.

By September, the situation would look very different.

On September 12, Gates fortified his American position at Bemus Heights. The following day, Burgoyne crossed the Hudson River near present-day Schuylerville and began his final advance south.

The fighting that followed would eventually force Burgoyne to surrender on October 17.

But the campaign had been shaped long before the surrender.

It unfolded along roads and rivers as well as battlefields.

Sometimes the difference was measured in hours.

Sometimes it was a wagon that could not move.

Sometimes it was another day.

On This Day — August 26, 1777

Burgoyne’s army was trying to move supplies through a landscape made increasingly difficult by rain, swollen waterways, and muddy roads.

His instruction to Riedesel captures the problem simply: better to carry half a load than allow a wagon to become stuck and lose the horses.

That small decision offers a useful way to look at the Saratoga Campaign.

Generals made the plans. Soldiers fought the battles. But roads, rivers, horses, wagons, weather, and time shaped what those armies could actually do.

For visitors following Burgoyne’s route today, look beyond the battlefield. The landscape itself was part of the campaign.

Where to Experience This Landscape

Follow the Hudson River through Washington County and toward Schuylerville. Look at the roads, crossings, riverbanks, and distances differently.

The modern landscape makes Burgoyne’s march easier than it was in 1777. That is precisely what makes it useful to walk.

I wrote this one early in the life of the Substack, back when it was still finding its footing. It didn’t reach many people the first time around, but I’ve always believed the National Park System is worth celebrating.

Last Sunday, my family and I visited Martin Van Buren National Historic Site in Kinderhook, NY. It is a terrific site, although the house hours are limited, so check ahead their website before making the trip. The house, which is the centerpiece of the site, is remarkable. We had a great ranger who gave us the tour, but for me, the real pleasure was the curatorial work. The number of objects on display that date to Martin Van Buren’s lifetime is impressive. Seeing those things in the rooms where he lived makes the history feel immediate in a way that a book simply cannot.

I also want to give a shout-out to the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor as we commemorate the start of the National Park Service. I had the honor of serving as a commissioner, and I’m proud to say I was the second person from our community to serve in that role. I know some NPS management have been less than enthusiastic about National Heritage Areas. I’ve heard the criticism firsthand. I see it differently. In my experience, the heritage areas are doing some of the most important work in the National Park System by bringing communities together to preserve and interpret our cultural, historical, and natural resources. That work matters because preservation rarely happens in isolation. It happens through partnerships—with communities, museums, historic sites, local governments, volunteers, and people who care enough to keep these places meaningful. Preservation requires stewardship, Park managers come and go. Local community stewards make the difference for generations to come.

So here it is again: a story from the early days of Past Paths, a little rewritten. Hopefully, this time it finds the audience it deserves.

Walk the battlefield today and it is easy to assume that its preservation was inevitable.

It wasn’t.

The fields are open. The roads are maintained. The monuments stand where visitors expect to find them. From the Freeman Farm Battlefield Tour Road Stop, the landscape can look almost timeless.

But it wasn’t always this way.

The story of Saratoga National Historical Park is also a story about preservation. It is a story about people who believed this ground mattered, long before the federal government took responsibility for it.

That story begins with the National Park Service.

On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the legislation creating the National Park Service. The new agency was charged with conserving the nation’s scenic, natural, and historic resources while making them available for public enjoyment without impairing them for future generations.

The mission would grow.

In 1933, the federal government transferred dozens of national monuments and military sites from the War Department and Forest Service to the National Park Service. Historic places were increasingly becoming part of a national preservation system rather than remaining solely under local or state control.

Saratoga had already begun that journey.

In the years before the 150th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga, local preservationists worried about what was happening to the battlefield. Roads and development were changing the landscape, while much of the battlefield remained privately owned.

The Sons of the American Revolution stepped in.

Beginning in 1923, Charles Ogden and the Saratoga Battlefield Association worked to acquire battlefield farms. Their efforts helped build the political support that eventually led New York State to accept Saratoga Battlefield as a state historical site in 1927.

That matters.

Saratoga did not become a national park because Washington suddenly discovered it. Local people had already spent years arguing that this ground was worth preserving.

Then came 1938.

Congress authorized the creation of Saratoga National Historical Park on June 1, 1938. New York State continued planning and development while the National Park Service served in an advisory role.

Federal involvement came in stages. In 1941, 1,429 acres previously acquired by New York State were accepted by the federal government for administration and protection. The park was formally established on June 22, 1948.

The years between those dates left another mark on the landscape.

The Civilian Conservation Corps arrived in Stillwater in 1939. Young men working through the CCC cleared vegetation, removed fences and other features, built roads, conducted archaeological investigations, mapped the battlefield, and helped shape the landscape visitors encounter today.

Their archaeological work was particularly ambitious.

Between 1939 and 1941, CCC laborers excavated roughly five miles of trenches as part of archaeological research. The work helped historians and park planners understand the battlefield and develop the historical landscape that visitors would eventually see.

Much of that work happened before the park was formally established.

That is an important part of the story.

Preservation is not simply about putting a fence around an old place and walking away. Someone has to decide what belongs, what does not, what should be removed, what should be studied, and what visitors should be able to see.

Those decisions shape the landscape just as surely as the original battle did.

Today, visitors walk a battlefield that has been shaped by two centuries of history. The ground remembers the Battles of Saratoga, but it also carries the imprint of the people who worked to preserve that memory.

There was some fortune in Saratoga’s preservation, but it was not inevitable. Local advocates had to make the case. New York State had to act. Congress had to authorize the park. Federal officials had to acquire and protect the land. CCC workers had to reshape and study it.

The National Park Service then had to keep doing the work.

That is worth remembering on the anniversary of the agency’s founding.

When a visitor walks the Battlefield Tour Road today, the open fields can make preservation look effortless.

It wasn’t.

The landscape exists in its present form because generations of people decided that this place was worth keeping.

And that may be one of the most important things a visitor can see here.

The battlefield was preserved because people chose to preserve it.

The Mohawk Valley opens gradually.

Today, roads into Rome, New York, carry traffic past neighborhoods, businesses, and ordinary city streets. At first, little suggests the military crisis that unfolded here in August 1777.

Then the geography comes into focus.

The Mohawk River and Wood Creek once came within a few miles of one another. Between them was the Oneida Carrying Place, a portage that connected the Mohawk Valley with the waterways leading west toward the Great Lakes. For generations, people moved through this corridor. By the eighteenth century, European powers understood its military importance. Fort Stanwix, renamed Fort Schuyler by the Americans during the Revolution, guarded the route.

Stand here today, and the strategic importance is not immediately obvious.

That is part of what makes the place worth visiting.

In August 1777, this landscape became the setting for a crisis that reached far beyond the walls of the fort. Lieutenant Colonel Barry St. Leger’s British-led expedition had entered the Mohawk Valley as one part of a larger campaign designed to place pressure on the American position from several directions. Burgoyne’s army was advancing toward Albany while St. Leger’s force moved east through the valley.

St. Leger’s expedition included approximately 800 British, German, Royalist, and Canadian troops, accompanied by roughly 700 to 1,000 American Indian allies. Inside Fort Schuyler, Colonel Peter Gansevoort commanded roughly 750 to 800 Continental soldiers. The fort was expected to be vulnerable. Instead, it held.

The fort held.

Herkimer’s relief force fought at Oriskany.

The Haudenosaunee did not act as a single political or military bloc.

And, in the end, Benedict Arnold helped convince St. Leger’s army that a much larger American force was approaching than actually existed.

That sequence is familiar to anyone who knows the Saratoga Campaign.

What is easier to miss is how much depended on the ground between those events.

A fort could become a campaign problem. A road could become a military necessity. An alliance could fracture under pressure. Information could become more valuable than numbers.

The story of Fort Schuyler reveals seven takeaways about how the Northern Campaign actually worked.

1. Geography Could Become a Strategic Hinge

Fort Schuyler mattered because of where it stood.

The Oneida Carrying Place connected the Mohawk River with Wood Creek, creating a portage between major waterways. Control of that route affected the movement of people, supplies, intelligence, and military forces between the Mohawk Valley and the interior. Fort Schuyler therefore guarded more than a set of walls. It guarded a connection.

That is easy to miss when looking at the campaign on a map.

The Saratoga Campaign is often imagined as a line running south from Canada through Lake Champlain and the Hudson Valley. But the British strategy was broader. Burgoyne’s army was moving toward Albany while St. Leger’s expedition entered the Mohawk Valley. The operations were intended to create pressure from different directions.

Fort Schuyler sat across one of the routes that could have helped make that strategy work.

The geography imposed limits of its own. Roads were difficult. Waterways did not always provide easy transportation. Heavy artillery and supplies had to move through terrain that could slow an army before it reached an enemy position.

The fort was therefore a hinge.

If St. Leger passed through, the Mohawk Valley would be exposed. If he remained tied down before the fort, time worked against him.

The first takeaway is straightforward: in eighteenth-century warfare, geography did not merely shape battles. It shaped what armies were capable of attempting in the first place.

2. A Fort Could Become a Campaign Problem

When St. Leger’s force arrived in August, the Americans inside Fort Schuyler faced a difficult situation.

Colonel Peter Gansevoort commanded a garrison of roughly 750 to 800 Continental soldiers, principally the 3rd New York Regiment and detachments of Massachusetts troops. Oneida allies were also present.

St. Leger expected the fort to be vulnerable.

That assumption mattered.

Earlier British intelligence had described Fort Stanwix as being in poor condition and lightly defended. More recent information indicated that its defenses had been repaired and its garrison reinforced. St. Leger nevertheless proceeded.

The siege became a problem of time.

The defenders did not have to defeat St. Leger’s expedition in the open field. They needed to hold the fort long enough for circumstances outside its walls to change.

That distinction changes how the siege looks.

Victory did not always mean destroying an enemy force. Sometimes it meant refusing to give an enemy the result it needed.

The garrison refused to surrender. Outside the walls, St. Leger’s engineers pushed their trenches closer.

On August 19, the besiegers began digging approaches toward the northwest bastion. By August 21, they had reached roughly 150 yards from the fort.

The fort had become a campaign problem.

3. Oriskany Shows What a War Within Communities Looked Like

The siege cannot be understood without leaving the fort.

Herkimer’s first relief force never reached the walls.

On August 6, Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer marched toward Fort Schuyler with approximately 800 Tryon County militiamen and a party of Oneida warriors. Near Oriskany Creek, the column entered an ambush by Royalist troops and American Indian warriors allied with the British.

The terrain made the encounter particularly brutal.

The fighting took place among ravines and difficult ground. The battle quickly became close combat. Men who had marched expecting to relieve a besieged fort instead found themselves fighting at close quarters for survival.

The American force suffered enormous losses. Herkimer was mortally wounded, and the militia was too badly damaged to continue toward Fort Schuyler.

Yet Oriskany did not end the crisis.

While the battle raged away from the fort, Lieutenant Colonel Marinus Willett led a sortie against the camps of St. Leger’s American Indian and Royalist allies. The raid disrupted the camps and carried away supplies and personal property.

This is where the neat distinction between the Battle of Oriskany and the Siege of Fort Schuyler begins to break down.

They were interconnected parts of one campaign.

The battle affected morale inside the fort. The sortie affected the people who had fought at Oriskany. Those losses and disruptions contributed to growing dissatisfaction among some of St. Leger’s American Indian allies.

Oriskany therefore had consequences beyond its immediate tactical result.

4. The Haudenosaunee Were Not One Side

Perhaps the most important takeaway is also one of the easiest to oversimplify.

The Revolution placed extraordinary pressure on existing Haudenosaunee political relationships. Individual nations, communities, and leaders faced different choices about alliance, neutrality, homeland, and survival.

The Oneida became important American allies during the defense of Fort Schuyler. They supplied information and military assistance to the garrison, and Oneida warriors fought alongside Herkimer’s militia at Oriskany.

Other Haudenosaunee people supported St. Leger’s expedition.

That division was not a footnote to the campaign.

It was part of the campaign.

The war did not simply divide armies. It divided communities whose political and military choices were no longer the same.

The British relied heavily on American Indian military participation during St. Leger’s expedition. But describing those warriors simply as British instruments misses the political reality.

They had their own leaders and interests. They also had their own reasons for entering the war, and they could decide whether remaining with St. Leger’s expedition still served those interests.

That became critical as the siege continued. Losses at Oriskany, the destruction of camps, and growing dissatisfaction within the allied force all contributed to the weakening of St. Leger’s position.

An alliance is only as strong as the interests that sustain it.

5. Information Could Be More Valuable Than Numbers

Inside and outside Fort Schuyler, commanders operated with incomplete information.

Reports arrived late and often conflicted. Commanders had to determine whether the fort could continue to hold, how strong St. Leger’s force remained, and whether another relief effort could reach the fort before the situation became untenable.

Schuyler had already begun moving Brigadier General Ebenezer Learned’s brigade toward Fort Schuyler. On August 13, Benedict Arnold accepted command of the relief operation and received orders to move with the Continental troops and whatever militia he could persuade to join them.

Learned’s Brigade is easy to lose from the story because Arnold’s name dominates it. Yet the Continental soldiers who marched west were the force Arnold had been ordered to lead.

The relief effort was not simply Benedict Arnold riding to the rescue. Continental soldiers had to leave the main army and march west while Burgoyne’s army remained a threat in the Hudson Valley.

Arnold needed to know whether the fort could hold.

He needed to know how strong St. Leger’s force was.

He needed to know whether his own force was sufficient.

And he had to make decisions before all those answers were available.

Reports came late. Some conflicted. Rumors traveled quickly through the countryside, while commanders still had to decide which information they could trust.

That was the nature of the Northern Campaign.

6. Perception Became a Battlefield

Arnold’s force was too small to make a direct attack on St. Leger’s position an attractive option. He therefore turned to deception.

Han Yost Schuyler, a local man serving with St. Leger’s force, had been captured by Arnold’s column. Schuyler had lived among American Indians and had connections that gave him credibility with people in St. Leger’s camp. Arnold offered him his life in exchange for spreading exaggerated reports about the size and nearness of the American force.

The deception helped trigger the collapse of St. Leger’s position.

But the ruse worked because the expedition was already under pressure.

The fort had held.

Oriskany had been costly.

Willett’s sortie had disrupted the camps.

American Indian allies were increasingly dissatisfied.

Arnold’s misinformation exploited uncertainty that already existed.

That distinction matters.

Arnold did not defeat St. Leger’s army through superior numbers. He changed the information available to the enemy and allowed existing fears to do the rest.

The question was no longer simply how many Continental soldiers were approaching.

It was how many St. Leger believed were approaching.

By the afternoon of August 22, the siege was over and St. Leger’s force was retreating toward Canada. The retreat quickly became disorderly, with equipment abandoned along the way.

The Americans had lifted a siege without fighting their way into the fort.

Perception had become a battlefield.

7. Holding One Place Could Change Another Place

The final takeaway reaches beyond Fort Schuyler.

The siege consumed time, weakened St. Leger’s expedition, and prevented the Mohawk Valley operation from accomplishing its larger purpose.

The British campaign of 1777 depended upon coordinated pressure from several directions. Fort Schuyler was one part of that larger strategy, but its successful defense contributed to the failure of the Mohawk Valley operation. The National Park Service connects the failed siege with the wider breakdown of the British campaign that culminated in the Battles of Saratoga.

This is where the connection to Saratoga becomes most important.

The defense of Fort Schuyler did not win the Battles of Saratoga by itself.

Oriskany did not win them.

Arnold’s deception did not win them.

Learned’s Brigade did not win them.

Instead, the Northern Campaign accumulated consequences.

British plans encountered resistance in different places.

Time was lost.

Alliances weakened.

American forces survived long enough to gather.

And the British army that Burgoyne expected to operate within a coordinated campaign became increasingly isolated.

By the time the main British army reached the decisive phase of the campaign in the Hudson Valley, St. Leger’s expedition was gone.

That is a more useful way to understand Saratoga.

Not as an inevitable victory, but as the product of many decisions made under pressure.

Walking the Mohawk Valley’s Layered Memory

The modern visitor can still follow much of this story geographically.

Begin at Fort Stanwix National Monument in Rome.

Then travel toward Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site.

The distance between them is not simply a measurement on a map. It is part of the story.

At Fort Stanwix, visitors can see what it meant to hold a fortified position under siege. At Oriskany, the landscape shows what happened when the attempt to relieve it became a battle of its own.

Together, the sites reveal a campaign shaped by movement, communication, alliances, terrain, and uncertainty.

That makes these places particularly valuable for heritage travelers.

A visitor does not have to imagine the entire Revolutionary War at once. Instead, the landscape offers smaller questions.

Why was this location important?

Why did an army come this way?

Why did another army stop?

What did people know?

What did they fear?

Who was fighting with whom?

And what happened when the information changed?

Fort Stanwix National Monument explicitly connects the 1777 siege to the broader campaign and its eventual outcome at Saratoga.

That connection deserves more attention.

The Mohawk Valley and Saratoga are not separate Revolutionary War stories.

They are connected landscapes.

The roads, waterways, forts, battlefields, and communities formed a military geography that commanders on both sides had to understand. The people who lived there experienced the campaign not as a sequence of textbook chapters, but as armies moving through their communities.

That is what makes walking the ground worthwhile.

What Remains

The story is ultimately about uncertainty.

Geography limited armies. Alliances shifted. Rumors traveled faster than reliable reports. A fort held when it was expected to fall, and a relief force too small to attack successfully helped convince an enemy that it was much larger.

Fortune and misfortune met repeatedly along the Mohawk Valley in August 1777.

For St. Leger, an expedition that began with opportunity ended in retreat.

For the defenders of Fort Schuyler, survival depended on endurance.

For the Oneida, the campaign became part of a much larger struggle over homeland, sovereignty, and survival.

For Arnold, a moment of military success became another chapter in the complicated story of a man whose reputation would later be transformed by betrayal.

And for the Northern Campaign as a whole, every delay mattered.

The fort has been reconstructed.

The battlefield has been preserved.

Roads still cross the valley.

The landscape is different, but its strategic geography remains legible.

That is perhaps the most useful reason to visit.

Not to find proof that the Americans were destined to win. They were not.

Instead, walk the ground and consider the people who made decisions without knowing how those decisions would turn out.

The Saratoga Campaign was shaped by people making difficult choices before they knew how the story would end.

I wrote this one early on, back when this Substack was just finding its footing. It didn't reach many people the first time around, but I've always thought it was worth telling. So here it is again — hopefully this time it finds the audience it deserves.

On this day in 1777, Elihu Ely of Colchester, Connecticut, was drafted as a lieutenant in Colonel Jonathan Latimer’s Regiment of Connecticut Militia. He served for just over two months—enough time to fight at the Battle of Bemis Heights, endure the Siege of Saratoga, and witness the unprecedented surrender of a full British army.

Nearly two centuries later, in 1967, Ely’s words resurfaced. A letter he wrote to his brother and sister on October 16, 1777—the day before Burgoyne’s surrender—was donated to Saratoga National Historical Park by descendants of the Pratt family, who had preserved it for generations.

The Saratogian reported its donation at the time. Ely wrote in steady, faithful prose:

“These with my Love to you and ye Children may inform that through Divine goodness, I enjoy a Comfortable State of Health… There has been a sessation of arms here… I understand that this Day Mr. Burgoyne and his army are to resign themselves prisoners of war.”

What strikes me most is Ely’s matter-of-fact tone. He recounts “a smart Engagement” at Bemis Heights, Burgoyne retreating “about 8 miles,” and the British being “obliged to comply.” Beneath the plain language rests the weight of history: he was recording, almost casually, the turning point of the American Revolution.

Thanks to the National Park Service, Ely’s letter is now digitized and available online here. It endures as both a personal note of reassurance to his family and a firsthand witness to the moment when rebellion became victory.

Standing on the fields of Saratoga today, one can almost imagine Ely’s “comfortable State of Health” interrupted by musket fire, his quick lines written between exhaustion and duty. His words bridge centuries, a reminder that history often survives not in grand proclamations, but in the quiet letters of ordinary men who saw extraordinary things.

I’ve spent much of my life asking for pledges.
Back when I worked at a PBS station, fundraising drives were “all hands on deck.” Even the education project managers—people like me—got on camera and made the pitch, because we were the ones who could explain why the work mattered. A road can remember what a battlefield forgets.

Drive north from Saratoga today and the landscape seems settled and familiar. Farms stretch toward the horizon. Trees follow the contours of the land. The Hudson moves quietly through the valley. Roads connect communities that did not yet exist in their present form.

In 1777, those roads carried soldiers, refugees, messengers, provisions, rumors, and fear.

No one living through the summer knew how the campaign would end.

That uncertainty is part of what makes an old poem worth hearing again.

Rev. Wheeler Case wrote “An Answer for the Messengers of the Nation” in the aftermath of the Revolutionary campaign that brought General John Burgoyne’s British army south from Canada and ended with the surrender at Saratoga on October 17, 1777. Case was not writing as a detached historian. He was a Presbyterian minister and Patriot trying to give meaning to events that had recently seemed capable of ending very differently.

The poem is political, religious, and openly partisan.

It is evidence of how one Patriot understood the campaign after the uncertainty had passed but before its larger consequences were known.

A Landscape Under Pressure

Begin at Fort Ticonderoga.

In early July 1777, Burgoyne’s army forced the American evacuation of the fortress. News traveled south. American forces retreated, and communities along the route faced the possibility that the British advance would continue toward Albany.

At Fort Anne on July 8, American soldiers fought as the retreat continued. Farther south, roads and bridges became instruments of war. Supplies became harder to obtain. The countryside itself became part of the campaign.

Then the advance slowed.

At Freeman’s Farm on September 19 and Bemus Heights on October 7, the armies fought the engagements remembered together as the Battles of Saratoga. By then, Burgoyne’s army was no longer moving south with the confidence it had shown in July.

On October 17, it surrendered.

The landscape had not changed dramatically.

Its meaning had.

Visitors can still experience some of that geography today. From Fort Ticonderoga south through the Champlain Valley, along the Hudson and toward Saratoga National Historical Park, the broad corridor remains understandable in physical terms even though its roads, farms, and communities have changed.

The distances remain.

And distance mattered.

An army had to march those miles. Wagons had to carry food and ammunition. Messages had to travel. Bridges had to be crossed or destroyed. Decisions made far away eventually arrived here in physical form.

A lost position, a delayed supply train, a broken bridge, or intelligence that arrived too late could change what happened next.

In 1777, no one knew which way the campaign would turn.

Poetry in the Landscape

Recent poetry programs in the Saratoga region have offered another reminder that poems can make us notice places differently.

On August 6, 2026, poetry marked the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence at Victory Village Hall. The program brought together poetry from the colonial era, Revolutionary War ballads collected by William Leete Stone, and new work written by contemporary regional poets.

A few days later, Poetry in the Pines: Celebrating Seasons brought ten published poets together at Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

One took place in a village hall and the other beneath the pines at SPAC. Both asked what poetry can make us notice.

That question leads back to Saratoga’s Revolutionary landscape.

William Leete Stone gathered the poetry and ballads associated with Burgoyne’s campaign in Ballads and Poems Relating to the Burgoyne Campaign, published in Albany in 1893. The volume includes sections devoted to Oriskany, Bennington, the Battles of Bemus Heights and Saratoga, and other episodes of the campaign.

More than a century later, those poems can still be read against the places where the campaign unfolded.

Before Reading Case

There is an important distinction to make before entering the poem.

Case did not write from the middle of the campaign.

His collection was published in 1778, after Burgoyne’s surrender. Bibliographic records identify the original collection as Poems on Several Occurrences in the Present Grand Struggle for American Liberty, published in 1778, with later editions appearing in 1779.

Case therefore knew that Burgoyne had surrendered.

What he did not know was what that victory would ultimately mean.

The American Revolution was a war for independence, a civil war, and a world war. It impacted millions, from Canada to the Caribbean and beyond. Few escaped its violence. At one time or another, the British Army occupied all the major population centers in the United States, including New York City for more than seven years.

Case saw that conflict through the eyes of an eighteenth-century Patriot minister.

His language reflects that position.

The poem contains deeply hostile descriptions of American Indians and British forces. Those passages are not neutral descriptions. They reveal the assumptions, fears, religious convictions, and political language of the period.

Modern readers should also notice what the poem leaves out, particularly the perspectives of American Indians who experienced the war from very different positions.

That absence matters.

Case was telling one story, shaped by his politics and his faith. The history was larger than the story he could see.

The poem is useful precisely because of that limitation.

An Answer for the Messengers of the Nation

From ill designs and all suspicion free,
We’ll then receive them in the arms of love;

We’ll first survey the dark side of the cloud,
Where scenes of woe in dark succession crowd;
The cruel savage tribes in union join,
And with the British army all combine;

They stop the great Burgoyne in his career,
Him they surround, his feet are in the snare;
With forc’d submission now he bows to Gates,
He and his hosts made pris’ners to these States.

In gloomy deserts, our most distant land,
Large cities shall be built and churches stand;
There Zion’s sons, commission’d from above,
Shall spread the news of their Redeemer’s love.
Where wolves now range, and other beasts of prey;
Where Indian tribes more savage are than they;
Where now the war-whoop sounds they bow prostrate,
Shall worship at the King of Zion’s gate;
Where stand the oak, the beech and the tall pine,
There shall be corn-fields and the fruitful vine;
Where marshes abound and the wild flag grows,
There shall be the lily and the blushing rose;
The most delicious fruits shall ripen there,
The peach, the plum, the apple and the pear.

What Are We Hearing?

The most striking thing about Case’s poem may not be its description of Burgoyne.

It is the speed with which uncertainty becomes meaning.

The British advance appears overwhelming. Fort Ticonderoga has fallen. American forces are retreating. Burgoyne’s army moves south “like swelling waves.”

Then the story turns.

Gates appears.

The army gathers.

The British advance stops.

Burgoyne is surrounded.

The surrender becomes evidence, in Case’s eyes, that Providence has intervened.

But Case was writing after the surrender. He knew the ending of the campaign. What remained uncertain was the meaning of that ending.

Once an outcome is known, the path toward it can look inevitable.

It was not.

The people living along these roads in the summer of 1777 did not know that the Battles of Saratoga would become a decisive episode in the Revolution. They did not know that the American victory would help persuade France to enter a formal alliance with the United States in 1778. They did not know how many more years of war remained.

They knew what was happening around them.

A retreat.

A rumor.

A column of soldiers.

A burned bridge.

A farm suddenly crowded with men.

A messenger at the door.

A cannon in the distance.

Who Was Wheeler Case?

Wheeler Case was a Presbyterian minister whose ministry was centered in Dutchess County, New York. He served congregations in the Poughkeepsie and Pleasant Valley area and remained connected to the region through the Revolutionary era. Stone identifies him as born at Southold, Long Island, in 1732 and buried at Pleasant Valley after his death in 1788.

His poems appeared in 1778 in a collection responding to the events of the Revolution. The volume included poems on St. Clair’s retreat, Burgoyne’s defeat, Jane McCrea, and “An Answer for the Messengers of the Nation.”

Case was not writing history in the modern sense.

He was making meaning.

His poem is a contemporary political and religious response to the Revolution, not a neutral account of it.

Who Was William Leete Stone?

William Leete Stone belonged to a later generation.

His Ballads and Poems Relating to the Burgoyne Campaign, published in Albany in 1893, gathered poems and ballads associated with the campaign and placed them alongside historical commentary. Stone described the project in his preface as an effort to collect the ballads he had encountered while researching Burgoyne’s campaign.

The result is useful to public history because it preserves more than information.

It preserves memory.

The poems tell modern readers not simply what later generations knew about the campaign, but how writers chose to describe it: through fear, ridicule, patriotism, religion, grief, and triumph.

From Verse to Landscape

The Saratoga Monument rises above the Hudson Valley, a nineteenth-century monument built long after Case wrote his poem. Saratoga National Historical Park preserves portions of the ground where the Battles of Saratoga unfolded.

Visitors can follow the Battlefield Tour Road, stand at overlooks, and consider distances that were once measured in marching hours rather than automobile minutes.

The landscape does not tell the story by itself.

It does, however, give the story somewhere to stand.

How far could an army move in a day?

What could soldiers see from a ridge?

How quickly could a message travel?

What happened to civilians living between armies?

What might a person have believed on September 19 that changed by October 17?

Those questions turn the landscape from scenery into evidence.

A Poem Is Not the Past

Case’s poem should not be treated as a transparent window into 1777.

It is a voice.

A Patriot voice.

A minister’s voice.

A voice shaped by fear, faith, politics, and the desire to believe that suffering had meaning.

That is what makes the poem useful today.

Not because Case was right about everything.

Not because his vision of the future was inevitable.

But because he allows modern readers to hear how one American Patriot interpreted the Revolution once the immediate crisis had passed.

Case could see the surrender.

He could not see the century that followed.

He could not know how the new nation would develop, how American Indian communities would experience the expansion he imagined, or how the ideals proclaimed during the Revolution would collide with slavery, displacement, political conflict, and competing definitions of citizenship.

He could see only the future he imagined.

When visitors walk the Saratoga landscape during America250, they already know how the story ends.

The people who lived it did not.

Even Case, writing after the surrender, could not know what Saratoga would mean in the decades ahead.

Perhaps that is the question worth carrying home:

What decisions look inevitable only because we already know their consequences?

Walk the ground.

Read the words.

Then look again at the landscape.

The fields are quiet now.

The roads continue south.

The Hudson still moves through the valley.

The outcome is written.

The uncertainty is what remains worth remembering.

Saratoga remains one of the most revealing—and most accessible—Revolutionary War landscapes in the country, especially as the Semiquincentennial approaches. What distinguishes it is not a single landmark, but a connected terrain that must be experienced in motion. The 1777 campaign does not sit in one place. It unfolds across communities, each holding part of the story.

The name “Saratoga” can obscure as much as it clarifies. The Town of Saratoga, established in 1788, is one of the county’s original municipalities. Stillwater contains the core battlefield at Freeman’s Farm and Bemus Heights. Saratoga Springs developed later around mineral springs and horse racing, not the fighting itself. Nearby communities—Schuylerville, Victory, Easton, Greenwich, and Northumberland—frame the campaign’s final phases: siege, retreat, and surrender.

To move through this region is to follow a geographic narrative. The Hudson River corridor still shapes the experience much as it shaped the campaign. Roads trace old routes. River crossings and elevations remain legible. The landscape holds together. Saratoga is not a single destination but a continuous field of action, where the story emerges through distance and direction.

The Battles of Saratoga—Freeman’s Farm on September 19 and Bemus Heights on October 7—along with the siege that followed from October 10 to 16 and the surrender on October 17, form only part of a wider campaign marked by smaller clashes and constant movement. Outcomes here were never assured. They turned, often, on moments of fortune and misfortune—weather, timing, terrain, and human decision.

This campaign unfolded within the larger American Revolution, also known as the American War of Independence (1775–1783), a complex international conflict involving thirteen colonies seeking independence from British rule. Neighbors chose sides. American Indians, enslaved and free people, and European allies all shaped the course of events. Moments like the Battles of Saratoga helped shift that struggle, drawing in foreign support and moving a fractured resistance closer to nationhood.

The ground still carries that story. Not as a single point, but as a connected landscape—one that asks to be followed.

There are moments in history that look small when they happen.

No musketry breaks the morning. No fort falls. No army surrenders.

On August 19, 1777, Major General Horatio Gates arrived at the American army’s camp south of Stillwater and assumed command of the Northern Department, replacing Major General Philip Schuyler. Three days earlier, American militia had defeated a British-German force at the Battle of Bennington, fought at Walloomsac, New York. Four days later, St. Leger’s army would abandon the siege of Fort Schuyler. The balance of the Northern Campaign was beginning to change.

Gates arrived at a moment when fortune had begun to turn.

But he did not arrive at the head of a new army.

He inherited one.

That distinction matters.

The Road to August 19

By the summer of 1777, Philip Schuyler had become one of the most controversial figures in the American war effort.

The loss of Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Independence had badly damaged his reputation. Congress removed Schuyler from command and appointed Gates in his place. Gates formally assumed command on August 19.

The familiar story is easy enough to tell.

Schuyler failed. Gates replaced him. Gates defeated Burgoyne.

But on August 19, 1777, Gates inherited a campaign that was already changing.

Schuyler had lost territory. He had also helped preserve the army as a fighting force.

His withdrawal from the Champlain Valley surrendered ground to Burgoyne while helping keep the American army intact. Schuyler also worked to obstruct the British advance and continued supporting the army after Congress removed him from command. The National Park Service describes his efforts as shrewd tactics to impede Burgoyne’s advance.

So the question is not simply whether Schuyler was a good general or a bad one.

The better question is:

What did Schuyler preserve before Gates arrived?

Gates Arrives

The answer can be found in Schuyler’s own words.

On August 20, Schuyler wrote to George Washington that Gates had arrived the previous evening. The next morning, Schuyler showed him the different passes, explained the disposition of the troops and the posts they occupied, and provided Gates with the orders and information he needed.

The letter captures the handoff itself.

Gates did not arrive to build an army from scratch. Schuyler handed him an army already in the field, with established positions, intelligence, supply problems, and a campaign already underway.

He also inherited the consequences of decisions already made.

The army Gates commanded was the product of an ongoing process, not a new army created by Gates.

That is one of the most important things to remember when standing on the ground at Saratoga.

Who Was Horatio Gates?

Gates was an interesting choice.

Born in England, he had served in the British Army before settling in America. When the American Revolution began, he joined the Continental cause. Congress appointed him adjutant general in 1775, giving him an important role in organizing the new Continental Army.

He was an experienced staff officer and military administrator who had not yet commanded an army in the field. The Battles of Saratoga would become his first army-level command.

He was not Benedict Arnold.

Gates’s experience was largely organizational and administrative, and in the summer of 1777 those qualities mattered. The Northern Army needed to be supplied, reinforced, organized, and held together.

The command dispute was never purely military. Congress had to balance military experience with regional politics, political confidence, state cooperation, and the willingness of militia to serve under particular commanders.

Gates arrived with stronger political support among some New England constituencies at a moment when the Northern Army needed reinforcements.

That mattered.

The army needed soldiers, and soldiers came through a political system as well as a military one.

Three Days Earlier, Fortune Had Changed

Gates arrived only three days after the Battle of Bennington.

That timing matters.

Burgoyne had sent a detachment toward Bennington seeking horses, cattle, supplies, and other resources. Instead, the expedition encountered American militia under Brigadier General John Stark.

The result was a severe British-German loss. The National Park Service estimates that nearly 900 of Burgoyne’s men were lost at Walloomsac, seriously weakening the British army.

Bennington did more than remove men from Burgoyne’s ranks.

It damaged momentum.

It affected confidence.

And it demonstrated that the countryside Burgoyne needed to support his army was not simply available for the taking.

Fortune, or more accurately misfortune for Burgoyne, was beginning to accumulate.

Gates’s own August 22 letter to Washington provides a revealing measure of the change. He wrote that the severe checks suffered by the British at Bennington and in the Mohawk Valley had given him a “more pleasing View of public Affairs.”

But his letter also reveals something else.

The campaign was far from settled.

Militia were still arriving.

Supplies were still needed.

American forces were still gathering.

The force Gates inherited was still being reinforced and reshaped.

He had inherited an opportunity.

He had not inherited an easy victory.

A Revolution Larger Than Saratoga

It is tempting to isolate August 19 from everything happening beyond the Hudson Valley.

That would be a mistake.

As Ken Burns and the filmmakers behind The American Revolution emphasize, the conflict was a war for independence, a civil war, and a world war. It affected millions from Canada to the Caribbean and beyond, and few people escaped its violence. At one point or another, the British Army occupied all the major population centers in the United States, including New York City for more than seven years.

Burns has described the American Revolution as one of the most important events in human history, arguing that Americans went from being subjects to citizens and that the Revolution helped set democratic revolutions around the globe in motion.

The conflict divided communities as well as armies.

In 1777 New York, Whigs or Patriots and Royalists represented a profound internal division among people who had lived alongside one another before the war.

The struggle over military command reflected some of those same regional and political tensions.

Schuyler was a New Yorker whose reputation had suffered badly.

Gates brought political support at a moment when the Northern Army needed reinforcements.

That difference mattered.

August 19 was more than a change of commanders. It was part of the larger political and military struggle over how the American war effort would be sustained.

What Gates Actually Inherited

Gates inherited more than troops.

He inherited the consequences of the campaign that had brought them there.

The retreat from Ticonderoga.

The roads and bridges obstructed to slow Burgoyne.

The gathering militia.

The resistance at Fort Schuyler.

The victory at Bennington.

The intelligence reaching American headquarters.

And now Gates.

None of those developments stood alone. Together, they shaped the army he now commanded.

Nothing changed overnight. Gates inherited an army that had already been retreating, fighting, gathering reinforcements, and learning how to slow Burgoyne’s advance.

That is why August 19 deserves more attention.

Gates would eventually become the commander most closely associated with the American victory over Burgoyne.

But the victory itself was larger than one commander.

It involved Schuyler’s preservation of the army, Gates’s command, New England militia, Benedict Arnold, Daniel Morgan, Tadeusz Kościuszko, Benjamin Lincoln, Enoch Poor, John Stark, American Indian allies, logistics, terrain, intelligence, and Burgoyne’s increasingly difficult supply situation.

Saratoga was not the work of one man.

It was the result of an army, a landscape, a campaign, and weeks of accumulated pressure.

The Ground Changes Before Saratoga

The most revealing part of the story may be what happened next.

Gates did not immediately march north and defeat Burgoyne.

The army needed time.

Reinforcements arrived.

The situation developed.

On September 12, Gates’s army, numbering about 8,500 men, moved into the Bemus Heights area and began building extensive fortifications. The position overlooked the Hudson River and the road to Albany, helping block Burgoyne’s advance.

From Bemus Heights, the Hudson lies below, while the ridge and the roads along the river make the military problem easier to understand.

Burgoyne needed to move south.

Gates needed to stop him.

The terrain helped determine how both armies could do it.

This is where the army Schuyler had preserved became the army Gates would command into the Battles of Saratoga.

And that transformation took weeks.

Not a single afternoon.

What Visitors Can Still See

Today, Saratoga National Historical Park preserves the landscape where this transformation unfolded.

Visitors can stand on the heights and look across terrain that still explains much of the military problem facing Burgoyne.

The battlefield has changed, of course.

Roads are different.

Forests have changed.

Fields have changed.

But the relationship between the Hudson River, the heights, and the route north remains remarkably legible.

The landscape helps answer a question that documents alone cannot:

Why here?

The answer is visible in the ground.

Kościuszko’s engineering work helped turn the terrain into a defensive position. The heights overlooked the Hudson and the road to Albany, while ravines and difficult ground restricted movement and made the American position harder to attack.

That is one reason a visit to Saratoga is more rewarding when you move slowly.

Look at the terrain.

Follow the roads.

Notice the elevations.

Think about distance.

Then remember what the army had been through before it ever reached this ground.

A History-Loving Explorer’s Saratoga Weekend

If August 19 has you thinking about visiting the Northern Campaign landscape, build a weekend around the geography rather than trying to see everything at once.

Saturday: The Road to Saratoga

• Download SRE.

• Begin at the Saratoga National Historical Park Visitor Center.

• Spend time with the campaign exhibits before heading onto the battlefield.

• Follow the Battlefield Tour Road Stops and pay particular attention to the terrain around Bemus Heights Stop 3.

• Walk where possible rather than viewing the battlefield entirely from the car.

• Continue into Stillwater and along the Hudson River corridor.

• Spend the evening in Saratoga Springs and consider how dramatically the landscape changes between the battlefield and the modern city.

Sunday: Put August 19 Into Context

• Visit Schuyler’s Saratoga Estates and consider the Schuyler family’s place in the region before and during the Revolution.

• Continue around Schuylerville visiting the Sword Surrender, Victory Woods and Saratoga Monument sites and the Hudson River including Hudson Crossing Park.

• Trace the northern route Burgoyne followed after crossing the river.

• If time allows, continue west toward the Mohawk Valley and consider how the crisis at Fort Schuyler affected the larger Northern Campaign.

The distances matter.

That is part of the history.

The British army was operating across an enormous landscape while depending upon roads, rivers, wagons, horses, provisions, and communications.

The American army was learning how to make that landscape work against Burgoyne.

The Real Turning Point Was Not a Single Moment

By October, Gates would be remembered as the victor.

But on August 19, he was simply the new commander.

Gates had an army to organize and a British army to stop. Supplies were still needed. Militia were still arriving. Intelligence was still coming in. The campaign was already underway.

That makes the date more interesting, not less.

Schuyler preserved the army.

Gates inherited it.

New England responded to him.

Burgoyne was losing momentum.

And within weeks, the American army would stand behind the fortifications at Bemus Heights.

The conditions that produced the Battles of Saratoga did not begin on September 19.

They were being created long before the first shots were fired.

August 19 is one of those quieter dates that rewards a second look.

When you stand at Saratoga, the better question may not be simply:

“Who defeated Burgoyne?”

Ask instead:

What had to happen before that victory became possible?

There is a temptation to give August 16, 1777, too much weight.

The Battle of Bennington was certainly a major defeat for British General John Burgoyne. Nearly 900 of his men were killed, wounded, or captured, and the loss seriously weakened his army. But another part of the story unfolded over the days and weeks that followed.

Something less visible was happening.

Burgoyne was beginning to lose some of the people his army depended upon to understand the country ahead.

Many of his American Indian and First Nation allies possessed knowledge of the country and ways of moving through it that European soldiers could not easily reproduce. Individual war parties and allied groups could scout, screen advancing forces, gather information, raid, pursue an enemy, and operate in terrain where conventional formations were cumbersome.

And after Bennington, many of those allies left.

The result was not literal blindness.

But Burgoyne was losing some of his eyes and ears.

The Allies Burgoyne Depended On

The phrase “Burgoyne’s Indians” conceals an extraordinarily complicated coalition.

The first wave began arriving in June from several communities along the St. Lawrence and its tributaries, which British officials commonly grouped under the term “Seven Nations of Canada.” They included communities at Bécancour, Caughnawaga, Lake of the Two Mountains, Lorette, Oswegatchie, Saint-François, and Saint Regis. Together, these communities contributed roughly 500 fighting men by the end of June. Their participation reflected political relationships, diplomacy, community interests, and military considerations.

Their presence was not simply military.

British officials, Canadian volunteers, interpreters, and allied communities formed part of the larger network that brought warriors into Burgoyne’s army. This was a diplomatic undertaking as well as a military one.

A second wave arrived in July, bringing additional 450 American Indian and First Nation warriors, including Fox, Menominee, Ojibwe, Ottawa, Potawatomi, Sauk, and Ho-Chunk, and 170 Canadian volunteers into Burgoyne’s army.

These were not interchangeable military units.

They represented different communities, leaders, histories, political relationships, and interests.

That distinction matters.

They Were More Than Scouts

By August and September, American Indian and First Nation warriors accompanying Burgoyne served as scouts, quick-strike forces, and flanking and diversionary forces.

Their value became especially apparent as Burgoyne’s army moved farther south.

A European army marching through unfamiliar country depended upon roads, maps, guides, patrols, intelligence reports, and reconnaissance. Northern New York presented another problem: thick woods, scattered settlements, rivers, streams, hills, and an enemy increasingly able to appear where British officers did not expect them.

The American Indian and First Nation warriors could operate differently.

They could move ahead of the main army. They could watch an American position without exposing a large body of troops. They could move through woods where conventional formations were vulnerable. They could gather information and return with reports.

Burgoyne did not simply need more soldiers.

He needed information.

Bennington Was the Catalyst

By the middle of August, the campaign was already under strain.

Burgoyne needed provisions, horses, cattle, wagons, and other supplies. The expedition to Bennington was intended to secure those resources. Instead, it produced a serious battlefield defeat.

Fortune had begun to turn against Burgoyne.

But misfortune did not stop at the battlefield.

Kevin J. Weddle’s The Complete Victory situates the departure of Burgoyne’s American Indian and First Nations allies within a broader deterioration of the campaign. They were already frustrated by restrictions placed upon them by European commanders. Bennington became the “last straw.”

On August 19, they held a council, and most decided to leave. Within days, most had gone north toward Canada.

That chronology is important.

It was not that every participant disappeared immediately after Bennington.

On August 28, Joseph Brant and three fellow warriors arrived at Burgoyne’s camp, offering their assistance and bringing news of British Lieutenant-Colonel St. Leger’s withdrawal. But by then the larger departure had already changed Burgoyne’s army.

By early September, most of his American Indian and First Nation allies had departed.

The distinction between August 16 and August 19–28 changes the story.

Bennington was the shock.

The withdrawal was a process.

Why Did They Leave?

The simplest explanation is that Bennington frightened them away.

The historical explanation is more complicated.

Weddle’s account shows that dissatisfaction had already been building. European restrictions had frustrated Burgoyne’s allies. British and German soldiers themselves had mixed feelings about their presence and their methods of warfare. Some officers considered them difficult to control. Others recognized their military value.

The alliance was therefore conditional.

These warriors were not British soldiers following orders from Burgoyne.

They came with their own political interests, community concerns, expectations, and reasons for participating. Some sought to defend their communities and territories against American expansion. Others had established diplomatic relationships with British officials. Material considerations also mattered.

Their participation should not be reduced to loyalty to Britain.

Nor should their departure be described as disloyalty.

They were making decisions for themselves.

That is one of the most important interpretive lessons of the Saratoga Campaign.

What Burgoyne Actually Lost

The loss was not simply a number on a morning report.

Burgoyne lost a particular kind of military capability.

Fraser attempted to compensate for the loss by relying more heavily on Royalist Americans for patrol and scouting duties. But they were not equivalent. Weddle records a German officer’s observation that the Royalists were not suitable substitutes for the American Indian warriors who had provided security and reconnaissance.

That difference mattered.

Burgoyne’s intelligence system was still functioning. He had officers, scouts, patrols, Royalist networks, written reports, and other sources of information.

He was not blind.

But his range of reconnaissance had narrowed.

His ability to gather information beyond the army’s immediate perimeter had diminished.

His access to local knowledge had weakened.

And his army was moving deeper into a landscape that was becoming increasingly hostile.

The National Park Service’s campaign chronology places these developments alongside another strategic failure. On August 23, St. Leger’s expedition abandoned the siege of Fort Schuyler/Stanwix and retreated to Canada. Burgoyne was now, in the NPS’s words, on his own.

The timing mattered.

Burgoyne was losing one of the supporting elements that had been supposed to help his campaign succeed just as another, his American Indian and First Nation alliance, was deteriorating.

The Landscape Was Changing, Too

Burgoyne’s campaign had always been a contest with geography.

His army had come south through the Lake Champlain–Lake George–Hudson River corridor with an ambitious objective: reach Albany and help sever New England from the other American colonies. The strategy depended upon several British operations working together.

Instead, distance multiplied every problem.

Supplies had to move over increasingly difficult roads.

Communications became slower.

American forces grew.

Local resistance increased.

And Burgoyne had fewer reliable means of understanding what was happening beyond the immediate perimeter of his army.

By September, he was advancing into a landscape where American strength was gathering.

On September 12, thousands of American soldiers began fortifying Bemis Heights. Seven days later, the first of the Battles of Saratoga began.

The outcome was not predetermined.

Burgoyne still had a disciplined and dangerous army. He still believed the campaign could succeed. Weddle emphasizes that even after Bennington, the loss of his American Indian and First Nation allies, and St. Leger’s retreat, Burgoyne did not regard the campaign as finished.

But his margin for error had narrowed.

What Bennington Changed

Bennington is often presented as a prelude to Saratoga.

That is true, but incomplete.

It was also a test of the system that sustained Burgoyne’s advance.

The defeat cost him men, supplies, and confidence. It also accelerated the departure of allies whose knowledge of the country had helped his army operate in unfamiliar terrain.

That is why the period after Bennington deserves more attention.

The important question is not simply who won at Bennington.

It is:

What did Burgoyne lose after Bennington that could not easily be replaced?

The answer was partly human.

He lost relationships.

He lost intelligence.

He lost a layer of reconnaissance.

He lost people who knew the country better than many of the soldiers marching through it.

Follow the route south, and Bennington no longer feels like a separate story.

It becomes part of a campaign unfolding across roads, rivers, forests, farms, settlements, and communities.

Experience the Landscape Today

Visitors can still explore portions of this interconnected landscape.

For someone following the campaign by automobile, the story works particularly well as a weekend journey rather than a single battlefield visit.

Saturday — Bennington and Walloomsac

• Begin at Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site in New York, where the fighting associated with the Battle of Bennington occurred.

• Walk the battlefield landscape and consider how wooded terrain affected movement, visibility, and communication.

• After exploring the battlefield, continue into Bennington, Vermont, to visit the Bennington Monument and Bennington Museum.

• Look south toward the landscape Burgoyne’s detachment had crossed. The geographic distance between the British army and its supply objectives is easier to understand on the road than on a campaign map.

Sunday — Follow Burgoyne’s Northern New York Route

• Begin near Fort Miller, where Burgoyne’s army established itself along the Hudson.

• Continue south toward Saratoga National Historical Park.

• At the park, use the Battlefield Tour Road to connect the geography of the campaign with the Battles of Saratoga.

• Stop at the Saratoga National Historical Park Visitor Center before walking portions of the battlefield.

• Continue to Schuylerville and Schuyler’s Saratoga Estates, where the Hudson River landscape helps visitors understand the importance of transportation, communication, agriculture, and military supply.

• Allow time to explore the village and the Champlain Canal Region Gateway Visitor Center.

The goal is not to recreate 1777. It is to look closely at what remains.

The river is still there.

The hills are still there.

The wooded ridges, open fields, rivers, and crossings still help explain the choices soldiers had to make in 1777.

Standing in those places, visitors can begin to see why information mattered so much.

A commander could possess a large army and still struggle to understand the country in which that army was operating.

The Consequences Reached September

By early September, Burgoyne’s campaign had entered a new phase.
