The Night I Partied with Anne Hathaway After the Oscars! 🎬 I Was There... with Selma Fonseca.

For more than 25 years, I photographed Hollywood, music, fashion, and sports from places most people never get to see. These aren’t tabloid stories.

They’re memories from someone who was actually in the room.

With The Odyssey and The Devil Wears Prada 2 on the horizon, Anne Hathaway is having another incredible moment in Hollywood.

She’s also expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman, and every recent appearance seems to radiate confidence and happiness. Watching her today reminded me of the many times our paths crossed over the years, long before many of those moments became public.

I’ve always admired Anne. Like millions of people, I watched The Princess Diaries and secretly imagined what it would be like to wake up one day and discover you were royalty. What I didn’t expect was that years later I’d get to know the woman behind those unforgettable performances.

What I discovered was someone remarkably genuine.

January 2008: Sunday Karaoke at Cipriani Upstairs

The first time I met Anne was during one of the legendary Sunday karaoke nights at Cipriani Upstairs in New York.

She arrived with her boyfriend, Italian real estate developer Raffaello Follieri.

They looked completely in love.

They kissed, hugged, laughed, sang karaoke together, and spent the evening enjoying themselves like any young couple. Anne wore black glasses and a casual chic outfit. If you didn’t know she was an Oscar-nominated actress, you would have thought she was simply the nicest girl at the party.

Looking at them that night, everyone believed they would eventually get married. They had already been together for nearly four years.

Then, only a few months later, everything changed.

When the scandal surrounding Follieri broke, it shocked everyone. He was later convicted of wire fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering after falsely claiming connections to Vatican finances in a multi-million-dollar investment scheme.

Anne ended the relationship before his arrest and was completely cleared of any wrongdoing.

I remember feeling genuinely sad for her because only months earlier I had watched two people who appeared deeply in love.

It reminded me that sometimes we never truly know the person standing beside us until life reveals the truth.

That lesson became even more meaningful to me years later after experiencing a painful betrayal in my own life in August 2022. Since then, I’ve become much more careful about whom I allow into my circle.

Late 2008: A Quiet Dinner at Soho House

Toward the end of 2008, I saw Anne again.

This time it was at Soho House in West Hollywood.

The headlines surrounding the scandal had faded, and Anne looked lighter, happier, and hopeful.

She was having dinner in the garden restaurant with a man I had never seen before.

His name was Adam Shulman.

At the time, almost nobody knew they were dating. Their relationship hadn’t become public yet.

No photography was allowed inside Soho House, so I don’t have pictures from that evening.

I only have the memory.

What struck me wasn’t simply that Anne had found someone new.

It was the way Adam treated her.

He wasn’t trying to impress anyone.

He wasn’t trying to compete with her success.

He wasn’t trying to be the center of attention.

He simply wanted to make sure she was comfortable.

When Anne got up from the table, he walked her to the restroom. When they returned, he pulled out her chair before sitting down himself.

He listened when she spoke.

He stayed close without overshadowing her.

It wasn’t dramatic.

It was respectful.

I remember sitting there genuinely happy for her.

After everything she had been through, it was wonderful to see her smiling again and moving on with someone who seemed to treat her with kindness and respect.

February 2011: After the Oscars

Three years later, Anne hosted the Academy Awards with James Franco.

The reviews were harsh, and the media wasn’t kind.

That evening I began at Elton John’s Oscar party before deciding to head to Chateau Marmont, where Harvey Weinstein and The King’s Speech producer Gareth Unwin were hosting one of Hollywood’s legendary Oscar after-parties.

It turned out to be the best decision of the night.

The King’s Speech had just won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, so the celebration was electric. Gareth was carrying one of the Oscars in one hand, and a bottle of Pink Moët Champagne in the other, and everyone wanted to celebrate with him.

Anne was there. So was Adam.

Most photographers had stayed at Elton John’s party or the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, leaving Chateau Marmont surprisingly intimate.

My camera was the only one flashing.

I knew I was capturing moments that almost no one else would have.

The next morning, my photographs of Anne dancing were published around the world, and my story appeared in the New York Daily News. I’ve included a screenshot of the article below, along with a short video I filmed that night at Chateau Marmont. You’ll notice my watermark on the footage, as it comes directly from my personal archive.

There was no red carpet. No press line.

Just music, friends, laughter, and dancing.

I ended up dancing with Anne, Adam, and Gareth for what felt like hours.

Anne laughed. She smiled.

She completely let loose.

Maybe she was simply enjoying the party.

Maybe she was putting the difficult evening behind her.

Either way, she looked genuinely happy.

I filmed this during the after-party where Anne, Adam, me, and the The King’s Speech team celebrated into the early hours. This footage has remained in my personal archive for years.

Once again, I found myself watching Adam more than anyone else.

He never seemed bothered when people wanted to speak with Anne or ask for photographs.

He simply stayed nearby. Quietly supportive.

Protective without being controlling.

Watching them together reminded me of what I had seen at Soho House years earlier.

Nothing had changed.

If anything, they seemed even stronger.

January 2013: A Full-Circle Moment

The next time I saw Anne and Adam together was at the 24th Annual Producers Guild Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Anne was in the middle of an extraordinary awards season for her unforgettable performance as Fantine in Les Misérables. She would go on to win the Academy Award just weeks later.

This time, I finally asked if she would pose for a picture with me.

Before Anne could even answer, Adam smiled and said he would be happy to take the photo.

It was such a simple gesture, but it stayed with me.

Over the years, I had watched how naturally he supported her. He never seemed threatened by her fame or uncomfortable with her being the star.

Instead, he appeared genuinely proud of her.

As someone who has spent decades observing celebrities both in public and behind the scenes, I can tell you those little moments often reveal far more than any headline ever could.

Looking Back

I’ve photographed thousands of celebrities over more than 25 years covering Hollywood, music, fashion, and entertainment.

Some moments stay with you because of the headlines.

Others stay with you because of what happened when nobody else was looking.

When I think of Anne Hathaway, I don’t first think about Academy Awards, blockbuster movies, or magazine covers.

I think about a young woman singing karaoke in New York with the man she believed she would spend her life with.

I think about the heartbreak that followed.

I think about seeing her quietly begin again with Adam before the rest of the world even knew they were together.

And I think about dancing with her after one of the toughest nights of her career, watching her laugh, smile, and simply enjoy being herself.

Over the years, I realized something.

Talent may open doors.

But having someone beside you who believes in you, respects you, and encourages you to shine can change your life.

Anne Hathaway’s career has continued to flourish, and today she looks happier than ever.

After watching pieces of that journey unfold over the years, I can’t say I’m surprised.

Sometimes the happiest endings don’t happen in the movies.

Sometimes they happen quietly, one small moment at a time.

Ye is upset that his 13-year-old daughter, North West, got a nose piercing. In a new video, he accused Kim Kardashian and Disney of influencing her and claimed they’re turning her into “an emo with piercings all over her face.”

My opinion? 🤔

Ye, when you had children with Kim Kardashian, you knew she was one of the biggest influencers in the world. North already has blue hair, wears dramatic makeup and fake lashes, and that’s been public for quite some time.

At the same time, you’ve repeatedly chosen to appear in public with your wife, Bianca Censori, who is wearing extremely revealing outfits. What message does that send to your daughter?

Whether people agree or disagree, children often look to both parents as role models. Parenting isn’t just about criticizing the other parent. It’s also about the example you set yourself.

Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of My Career. Inside his Legendary Pre Grammy Galas.

Clive Davis didn’t just discover artists. He changed the soundtrack of our lives. From Whitney Houston and Alicia Keys to countless other stars, his ability to recognize talent was unmatched. He had an ear for greatness long before the rest of the world heard it.

The first time I met Clive was in 1999 at a charity event at the Winter Garden in Battery Park City, New York. Looking back at the photos, I laugh. I had bought a beautiful blue dress for the occasion and thought I looked fabulous. What I didn’t realize was that the camera flash made the dress completely transparent. Add the bright blue eye shadow I was wearing, and it’s safe to say fashion was a little different back then.

A year later, I received an invitation to one of the most coveted events in the music industry: Clive Davis’s legendary pre-Grammy gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

For a young photojournalist who had only been in the business a few years, walking into that ballroom felt like stepping inside the radio.

The first photographs I took that night were of Clive with Britney Spears. Soon after came Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jennifer Lopez, Billy Joel, and a parade of artists whose music had filled my life growing up.

The evening always began with cocktails upstairs before guests moved downstairs for dinner and performances. Clive had a gift for creating musical moments that no one else could. Artists from completely different genres would suddenly appear on stage together, creating once-in-a-lifetime collaborations that left everyone in the room speechless.

If you were an up-and-coming artist and received an invitation to Clive’s party, you had officially arrived.

Over the years, I met more legends at Clive’s events than anywhere else in my career.

In 2001 alone, I photographed Charlotte Church, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Babyface, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Kenny G., George Benson, Dick Clark, Wyclef Jean, Angie Stone, Deborah Cox, Fred Durst, and countless others.

One moment stands out above all the rest.

I was photographing Clive with a young artist named Alicia Keys, who at the time was still largely unknown to the public. As I took pictures, I overheard Clive confidently tell someone nearby, “Alicia will be the biggest musician and star in the world.”

He wasn’t guessing. He knew. And he was right.

That was Clive’s gift. He could hear greatness before anyone else.

I remember standing in those ballrooms completely overwhelmed. I was only three years into my career, freelancing for the New York Daily News and living in New York City. I couldn’t believe that the voices I had grown up hearing on the radio were suddenly standing a few feet away from me.

Every year after that first gala, I made sure I found a way back into Clive’s party.

Then came 2005.

One of my favorite memories happened during a performance by Jamie Foxx, Fantasia, Diana Ross, Usher, and Nelly. The room was electric. Suddenly, Robin Williams walked over, grabbed my hand, and pulled me onto the dance floor.

There I was, dancing with Robin Williams as he twirled me around the room, doing impressions, making jokes, and somehow dancing at the same time. He moved me back and forth like we were starring in our own version of Saturday Night Fever.

It’s one of those magical Hollywood memories that never leaves you.

Not every memory connected to Clive’s gala was joyful.

In 2009, I attended his pre-Grammy party at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. As the evening was winding down, I noticed a couple arguing near a waiting Lamborghini outside the hotel. I took a few photographs before heading home and sending them to my clients.

The next morning, my phone wouldn’t stop ringing.

The photos had become important because, shortly after they were taken, Chris Brown allegedly assaulted Rihanna.

What had seemed like a routine celebrity photograph suddenly became part of one of the biggest entertainment news stories in the world.

That was often the case around Clive’s events. History had a habit of happening nearby.

Outside of the Grammy parties, I occasionally ran into Clive in St. Barth during Christmas and New Year’s. It was always nice seeing him away from the spotlight, relaxing with friends at Nikki Beach or enjoying dinner at Taiwana. Those moments revealed a different side of him, one far removed from the powerful music executive everyone knew.

Looking back, Clive Davis’s parties were more than celebrity gatherings. They were cultural landmarks. Careers were launched there. Friendships were formed there. Musical history was written there.

For me, they were also classrooms.

I learned about the music business by watching Clive work a room. I learned about talent by seeing who he believed in. And I learned that one person with vision can change the course of popular culture.

Whoever takes over the mantle of hosting music’s most important pre-Grammy gathering has enormous shoes to fill.

Thank you, Clive, for the music, the memories, and the moments.

You will be missed.

But your legacy, and the photographs I captured, will live on forever.

Pay-to-Play - When Coverage Is for Sale, Journalism Loses Its Soul

When news can be bought, truth becomes optional. There’s a quiet crisis happening in the media, and it’s not being discussed loudly enough.

The NY Post, Vogue, ELLE, WWD, Forbes, Business Insider, Haute Living, Yahoo News, In Touch Weekly, and many others are damaging the credibility of the press and media.

Below are my communications with a company selling pay-to-play:

These screenshots display conversations I had with a company that provides pay-to-play services.

I’m talking about media outlets that blur the line between reporting and advertising, where favorable coverage can be quietly purchased with money, luxury trips, hotel stays, gifts, champagne, caviar, and “access.” The result isn’t just bad journalism. It erodes public trust and poisons the information ecosystem.

This isn’t the same as traditional public relations. Pitching a story is normal. Hiring a publicist is normal. Editors deciding what’s newsworthy is how journalism works.

These screenshots display conversations I had with a company that provides pay-to-play services.

But paying for placement is something else entirely.

In my experience, and based on conversations I’ve had across the industry, certain outlets operate in ways that resemble sponsored promotion while presenting the work as independent reporting. Some publications are widely known for these practices, including tabloids and business magazines that now function as status machines for the wealthy and well-connected.

I’ve personally been shown price lists. Not hypotheticals. Actual numbers. People I know, including contacts overseas, openly discuss the cost of securing favorable coverage in the U.S. and worldwide media. These aren’t fringe blogs. These are recognizable brand names that readers trust.

Meanwhile, outlets like the BBC and TMZ operate under strict editorial standards. A BBC journalist can’t even accept a T-shirt as a gift, let alone a luxury trip. You can pitch a story, but the editor decides. Full stop. But it looks like the New York Times -25k per post-, and others sometimes bend the rules.

That distinction matters.

Back in the day, tabloids were messy, but they paid sources for information. It was ethically questionable, but at least the transaction was straightforward. Today, the model has mutated. Now, companies or individuals allegedly pay writers directly with trips, hotels, champagne, access, and luxury experiences in exchange for flattering coverage.

Let’s be honest about the economics. Many writers and reporters earn between $50,000 and $70,000 a year, often living in cities like New York. Do the math. Rent, food, transportation, and healthcare. Then suddenly, those same writers are posting on their social media and publishing articles from the most expensive corners of the world: The Hamptons, Monaco, St. Barth, Aspen, staying at luxury resorts where the nightly rate is over 1000 per night, where flights cost thousands, and a dinner rivals a monthly grocery bill.

Who is paying for it?

Influencers sometimes do this openly. Journalism isn’t supposed to. Articles and features are supposed to be published on merit, not payment.

Forbes features, for example, are widely understood in media circles to come with a price tag. Entire businesses exist to sell these placements. Sometimes it’s framed as “brand building” or “visibility.” Sometimes it’s quietly handled through intermediaries. Often, readers are never told the content is pay for!

That omission is the real problem.

When paid content isn’t clearly labeled, readers assume they’re consuming independent reporting. They’re not. They’re reading advertising dressed up as journalism.

This doesn’t just damage individual publications. It damages the entire press.

People wonder why trust in the media is collapsing. Why audiences talk about “fake news.” Why do politicians rage against coverage? Why does President Trump say “Fake News”? This is part of the answer. When news can be bought, truth becomes optional.

I say this as someone who has been offered money. When I had a column at Billboard, people tried. Repeatedly. I never accepted. Not because I’m morally superior, but because cash clouds judgment. Once you accept it, you’re no longer a journalist. You’re a participant.

Some outlets remain legitimate institutions. But legitimacy erodes when pay-to-play becomes normalized, undisclosed, and systemic.

So the next time you read a glowing profile, a breathless feature, or a suspiciously positive mention in a major outlet, pause. Ask who paid for the flight, the hotel, the champagne, the caviar, and the access.

And ask yourself whether you’re reading journalism, or just costly advertising.

I Photographed Gwyneth Paltrow for Decades. Then She Stopped Speaking to Me

With all the controversy surrounding Gwyneth Paltrow’s recent advertisement for a luxury residential development, it reminded me of my own experiences with her over the years.

I first met Gwyneth at the legendary Vanity Fair Oscar Party in 1999, the night she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Shakespeare in Love. We even took a photo together holding her Oscar. She was warm, gracious, and approachable.

Over the years, I photographed her at numerous events, and whenever we crossed paths, she would say hello, pose for photos, and was always pleasant to me. I photographed her at the premiere party for The Next Best Thing in February 2000, and later that year at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party with Ben Affleck and her father, Bruce Paltrow.

In 2002, I was at a nightclub in East Hampton called Star Room when Gwyneth hosted a birthday party for her friend Julie Cuhill. I photographed her dancing and having a great time. She looked genuinely happy and carefree. The photos were published around the world the next day. The good old Hamptons days…

Then, on July 13, 2008, I photographed her at a Great Chefs charity event held at Nick & Toni’s in East Hampton. She was dressed casually and appeared to be wearing very little makeup.

The newspapers published the photos, and the following day, an editor told me that Gwyneth’s representatives were unhappy that the makeup-free images had run.

That always puzzled me.

She was attending a public charity event alongside other celebrities. It wasn’t as though I had photographed her privately on vacation aboard a yacht wearing a bikini, like some of the paparazzi photos making headlines today. Personally, I thought she looked fantastic. Natural, confident, and beautiful.

A few weeks later, on August 9, 2008, I was invited to photographer Steven Klein’s estate in Bridgehampton for a charity benefit where Gwyneth was the star guest.

Something felt different.

When she saw me, she gave me a cold look. The friendly, down-to-earth woman I had known for years suddenly seemed distant. She avoided me, turned away from my camera, and appeared determined not to engage with me at all.

I was hurt because, to my knowledge, I had done nothing wrong.

I saw her many times after that, but I never asked her what had changed. I assumed it might have been related to those makeup-free photos, but I never knew for certain. Looking back, perhaps I should have simply asked and cleared the air instead of wondering about it for all these years.

So, Gwyneth, when you read this story, I’d genuinely love to know what happened.

Was it the photographs? Or was it something that had nothing to do with me at all?

Sometimes we take things personally when they aren’t personal at all.

Maybe I misunderstood the situation. Maybe there was another reason entirely.

After all these years, I’ve always been curious.
