Welcome back!

More great news as we close August! Last time, we looked at the momentum behind Midwest startups and the capital flowing into the region. Now, there is another signal worth watching: company growth. Startup Midwest reported twenty-six Midwest companies ranked among the top 250 of the 2026 Inc. 5000, with Illinois leading the region with nine companies.

Chicago-based Loop ranked No. 10 nationally, reporting an impressive 14,831% revenue growth from 2022 to 2025. The rankings highlight a broader story: Midwest founders are not just raising capital, they are building companies with the growth to back it up.

And behind that growth is an ecosystem working to give founders the resources they need to build and scale. Chicago’s startup support system is getting national recognition, with two Chicago area university programs ranking among TIME’s top 10 incubators and accelerators in the country. The Garage at Northwestern ranked No. 5, while the University of Chicago’s Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation ranked No. 7. It is another reminder that Chicago’s startup story extends beyond funding. The universities, incubators, accelerators and innovation hubs across the region are playing an important role in helping the next generation of companies grow.

Chicago’s Venture Capital Base Is Growing

Chicago’s venture capital community is continuing to attract significant capital. Jump Capital closed its eighth institutional fund at $350 million, with a focus on AI, enterprise technology and cybersecurity. G Squared closed its largest fund to date at $2.3 billion, targeting growth-stage technology companies through secondary investments, structured transactions and select primary financings. Earlier this year, Corazon Capital closed a $100 million Fund IV, focused on pre-seed, seed and Series A companies, particularly AI-native startups. Motivate Ventures also launched its third fund, continuing its focus on early-stage fintech companies. Additionally, EMERGING launched a $300 million Experience Fund, focused on hospitality technology and AI.

Together, these fundraises show the range of capital being built in Chicago, from pre-seed investors backing emerging founders to firms investing in growth-stage technology companies. For Chicago startups, that means a growing network of local investors with capital to deploy across different stages of the startup journey.

🚑 Northwestern Medicine & Techstars Healthcare Accelerator | Chicago, IL

For health tech founders, this is one of the most compelling opportunities currently open in Chicago. Northwestern Medicine and Techstars are recruiting six health tech startups for the program’s third cohort.

The three-month program takes place in person in Chicago at Northwestern Medicine’s Mansueto Innovation Institute and combines Techstars’ startup infrastructure with Northwestern Medicine’s clinical and healthcare expertise.

The program is looking for companies working across areas including:

• Healthcare access

• Artificial intelligence

• Digital therapeutics

• Precision medicine

• Clinical operations

• Robotics

• Cybersecurity

• Improving patient and provider experiences

NextCycle Michigan is a free six-month accelerator focused specifically on recycling technology and organics solutions. The program helps companies move technologies toward commercialization and implementation while strengthening Michigan’s circular economy.

The Midwest Startup Momentum Continues

Illinois continues proving that startup ecosystems aren't built on unicorns alone. While California dominates billion-dollar AI rounds, Illinois led the Midwest in the number of startups funded this quarter. Consistent early-stage investment today creates tomorrow's breakout companies.

In Q2 2026, Illinois led the Midwest with 41 venture deals, more than any neighboring state. While the average round size remains smaller than those on the coasts, founders across Chicago and the state continue to secure early stage capital and keep the startup pipeline moving. It is a good reminder that strong ecosystems are built one startup at a time. Today’s seed rounds become tomorrow’s breakout companies.

Illinois Opens $30M for EV Charging Infrastructure

If you're a startup building in clean transportation, energy infrastructure, fleet technology, or EV charging software, check this out:

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has opened the fourth application round of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program, making approximately $30 million available to expand EV charging infrastructure across Illinois.

Unlike previous rounds focused on interstate corridors, this funding supports projects anywhere in Illinois. Eligible projects may serve passenger vehicles as well as medium- and heavy-duty fleets and can include DC fast chargers, Level 2 chargers, or a combination of both.

A few pieces of news I liked reading these past couple of months:

1. Chicago startups raised $385 million in venture funding during Q1, showing continued investor confidence in the region. However, compared with coastal tech hubs that continue to attract multi-billion-dollar funding rounds, the gap in available capital remains significant. For founders, the takeaway is clear: building traction, cultivating relationships, and expanding investor networks beyond the Midwest are becoming increasingly important in today’s fundraising environment.(Chicago Business Journal)

2. Chicago-based Syntax Bio expanded its Series A financing to $14.4 million, bringing its total funding to more than $25 million. The company is developing stem cell therapies for serious diseases, starting with Type 1 diabetes, and recently announced a collaboration with Mayo Clinic as it prepares for clinical testing. 3. Chicago Ecosystem Snapshot: A $65 Billion Startup Ecosystem reflecting steady growth across AI, fintech, healthcare, climate tech, and quantum. Global venture funding reached a record $510 billion in the first half of 2026, driven largely by AI. I have thoughts! Chicago has become one of the most important startup ecosystems in the country, even if it doesn’t always get framed that way in many of these reports. There’s real depth here: strong founder talent, a deep bench of operators, and serious momentum across industries like fintech, logistics, healthcare, and increasingly AI. This is the most collaborative the ecosystem in the country—founders, investors, and institutions tend to actually show up for each other in a way that feels less transactional and more long-term. At the same time, Chicago is still operating with less early-stage capital density than its output deserves, which makes the progress here even more impressive and the opportunity even bigger.

New Report Drop! Start Midwest x Dealroom: The Midwest Doesn’t Have an Innovation Problem. It Has a Capital Problem.

The numbers are in and they tell a familiar story. Start Midwest just dropped the first-ever State of Midwest Innovation Ecosystem report in partnership with Dealroom, and the headline is this: the Midwest is not an emerging ecosystem anymore it’s a proven one that still isn’t getting its fair share of capital. The region generates 16% of U.S. GDP but captures only 3–5% of venture funding. There are 10,000+ startups, 99 unicorns, and enterprise value that grew 3.8x over the last decade to $660 billion. The Midwest is moving companies through funding stages at competitive rates it’s just doing it with less fuel than it deserves. The question is no longer can the Midwest produce great companies (it clearly can). The question is why capital still hasn’t caught up and what we can do to change that.

Welcome back!

Big news for Chicago’s innovation ecosystem. Northwestern University just received a $25 Million gift from trustee Kimberly K. Querrey to expand its startup accelerator efforts.

The funding will support a new set of accelerators within the Querrey InQbation Lab, with an initial focus on AI, medtech, and therapeutics, three areas where Chicago continues to build strong momentum.

Since launching in 2022, the InQbation Lab has supported early stage, research driven startups, many led by first time founders, as they transition out of the university and into the market. These new accelerators are designed to take that support further, helping founders de risk their ideas, accelerate development, and move more quickly toward commercialization.

It is another strong signal that Chicago’s strengths in deep tech and life sciences are continuing to scale, and that our universities are playing a critical role in turning research into real companies.

Eight universities including University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign just launched Third Coast Foundry a shared space in San Francisco designed to connect Midwest startups directly with Bay Area VCs.

Think of it as a Midwest startup embassy right in the middle of Silicon Valley.

Why this matters:
• Midwest founders often take longer to raise early capital
• Venture dollars are still heavily concentrated on the coasts
• Access not just talent is the real bottleneck

I know, I know—I disappeared for four months! I needed to take a little break from the world. It’s been a lot. Our Latino community is still being kidnapped in the United States, the world feels like it’s in constant chaos, and everyone is just trying to survive. On a personal note, I was also finishing my fellowship through the end of the year, and time truly got away from me.But I’m happy to report that I’m back! SXSW Pitch is back for its 18th edition, spotlighting the world’s most groundbreaking startups and disruptive technology. Since its inception in 2009, SXSW Pitch finalists have collectively raised over $23.2 billion in funding, according to Pitchbook.

This premier startup showcase invites ambitious companies from around the globe to apply for a chance to present their ideas live to a panel of expert judges, venture capitalists, angel investors, and early adopters.

The 2026 SXSW Pitch will feature 45 Innovation technology companies from nine different categories: Enterprise and Future of Work; Entertainment, Media, Sports & Creator Content; Healthcare, AssistiveTech & BioTech; Innovative World Tech; Intelligent Systems, Robotics, & Multisensory Technology; Smart Cities, Transportation, Manufacturing & Logistics; Smart Data, Security, and FinTech; Student Startups; Sustainability, AgTech & Food.

SXSW Pitch Eligibility Criteria

• The company’s product and/or service must have been no earlier than January 1, 2023.

• Each company may only enter one product or service into SXSW Pitch. A company that enters multiple products or services is not eligible to participate in SXSW Pitch.

• Startups are encouraged to apply to multiple SXSW competitions — SXSW Pitch, SXSW Innovative Awards, and SXSWEDU Launch (if you are an education-related startup). But because we want to showcase as many different compelling startups as possible at SXSW, know that your startup will only be selected as a finalist in one of these three competitions.

• Founders of the company applying must retain some portion of ownership.

• The Company must not have raised over ten (10) Million Dollars in funding from combined funding sources.

• Startups should be legally registered and compliant with all relevant regulations and laws in their respective jurisdictions.

• If you have participated in SXSW Pitch in past as an Alternate or Finalist you are not eligible to apply.

• The product or service must fall into one of the SXSW Pitch categories.

LabStart is a nonprofit climate tech accelerator that helps entrepreneurs—especially those from underrepresented backgrounds—transform breakthrough research from U.S. national labs and universities into scalable startups. Their mission is to unlock the vast potential of lab-developed climate technologies by providing founders with the tools, funding, and mentorship needed to bring these innovations to market.

The LabStart fellowship is a two-phase program designed to support entrepreneurs at every stage:

Well, it didn’t take long for Chicago to respond to my last newsletter thoughts.

mHUB, a Chicago-based tech innovation hub, has partnered with Current to accelerate sustainable water innovation in the Great Lakes region. Their focus? Supporting early-stage startups tackling large-scale water challenges.

This collaboration will drive the development of physical technologies that address critical issues like water scarcity, contamination, and infrastructure resilience. As part of the initiative, they’re launching a Startup Roadmap Series—a set of virtual workshops designed to help early-stage #WaterTech founders move from concept to commercialization.

Kicking off on May 15, participants will dive into product-market fit, industry alignment, investment strategy, and product development—guided by expert mentors every step of the way.

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend the “Unlocking CleanTech & Sustainability: Exploring Policy, Innovation, and Investment" event held at TeamWorking by TechNexus in Chicago organized but the wonderful volunteers at CleanLeap.

As someone who is still very new but very drawn to Climate Tech and Sustainability, it was a great learning experience. I learned that there is real momentum building in Illinois around CleanTech. it really feels like the state is stepping into the spotlight when it comes to sustainable tech.

But as we accelerate efforts in electrification, energy storage, and carbon solutions, I couldn’t help but wonder, are folks looking at the full picture?
Clean energy is critical, but it’s not the only system and element we need to rethink. WaterTech needs to be part of this moment.

Take data centers, for example. As quantum computing and AI infrastructure expand, so does the demand for cooling and that often means water. These aren’t separate issues. The way we manage water is directly tied to how we scale our technologies sustainably.

Water access, infrastructure, and innovation often sit in their own silo, but they’re deeply connected to the same climate challenges. As the state shapes the future of CleanTech, there’s a real opportunity to take a more holistic view, one that also includes water as a core part of the strategy.

I'm very excited to continue learning in this space, and I am also very excited to see what folks at Current and gener8tor Great Lakes Innovation Accelerator deliver in Chicago (more on that below).
