General Caine has confirmed in writing that the U.S. military has no plans to deploy federal troops or federalized National Guard members to polling places during the November 2026 midterm elections, and no plans to seize ballots, voting machines, or other election-related materials. In his response, Caine noted that “election administration and security remain the fundamental responsibility of state and local officials.”

Hegseth has yet to respond.

First and foremost, voting and our democracy are safe. Voting by mail is safe. There are some states, like Utah, that vote 90% by mail. But this is part of a much bigger story of President Trump’s obsession with disinformation and misinformation about our elections because he fears he’s going to lose or his party is going to lose in November.  This is all part of the president’s efforts to lay down a storyline ahead of the November elections so that if his party loses, he can wrongly claim fraud.

So, let’s review the bidding on what the president has done just in the past six or seven months to create this narrative.

1⃣ He kicked off the redistricting wars to protect his Republican majorities.

2⃣ He gutted the Voting Rights Act from the 1960s.

3⃣ He’s suing 30 states for their voter rolls, including the state of Michigan.

4⃣ He also said in the State of the Union that if his side doesn’t win in November, the elections were rigged.

5⃣ He’s obsessively pushed the Save America Act, which would make it harder for millions of Americans to vote.

6⃣ And then most importantly in my book, he and his cabinet have refused to rule out sending uniformed military or federal law enforcement to our polls.

 I think it’s important to realize that this is all part of a well-worn authoritarian playbook. As a former CIA officer, I’ve seen this movie play out overseas. It usually ends up with the leader creating a justification to send uniformed military or federal law enforcement to the polls in the 11th hour.  

The president can post about me. He can make fun of me all he wants. I barricaded myself in my office on January 6th, the last time he tried to overturn an election. And earlier this year, he tried to criminally indict me for a 90-second video. The intimidation is the point.

But in our 250th year, nothing is more important than protecting our democracy and our fundamental right to vote.

The uniformed military shouldn't be deployed to interfere in our elections. Period. It’s why I introduced the Protect Our Polls Act, which would block President Trump from sending federal law enforcement or uniformed military to interfere in elections.

The nonpartisan tradition of military service and the constitutional guardrails that prevent our military from becoming a domestic police force for one political party are essential to maintaining our democracy.

Our nation’s senior-most defense and security leaders are the final failsafe for our democracy. As one constitutional scholar put it, “If a president is truly determined to make himself a dictator, the question at the end of the day is whether the military and other force-deploying agencies of the Federal government are willing to go along.”

On the Road

On my way to Windsor, a customs officer told me how excited Americans were to cross the Gordie Howe International Bridge for the first time. It was a nice reminder that, despite what you might see in the news, Americans and Canadians are great neighbors, and we have a lot more in common than what divides us.

Meeting with Customs and Border Protection

Michiganders have a special relationship with our Canadian neighbors, despite the drama of the last year—and both sides are committed to ensuring that the first few months go smoothly. I met with Customs and Border Protection to get an update on what they’ve been seeing since the bridge opened back in July.

About 8,000 vehicles crossed the bridge on opening day, and thousands more have made the trip since. The multi-use path also saw about 3,400 walkers, runners, and cyclists.

As with any major undertaking, it will take some time to understand traffic patterns and determine the staffing needed. Opening an international border bridge is a big deal, and everyone on both sides is committed to making it work.

Meeting with Mayor Dilkens of Windsor, Canada

It was also great to visit our sister city of Windsor to meet with Mayor Dilkens. There was much to discuss: strengthening our intertwined economy, keeping our border secure, and making sure one of North America’s most important international crossings continues to support jobs on both sides of the border.

The relationship between Michigan and Canada has always been bigger than one President or one Administration. It’s built on neighbors and allies solving problems together, investing in our shared future and recognizing that when our region succeeds, both countries benefit.

1⃣ Install loyalists to key positions around the elections. The president, unlike his first term, has really put in deep loyalists across the government; in the attorney general’s office, in charge of elections and election security. Putting in people who are more loyal to him than they are to the Constitution and who will do whatever he says.

2⃣ Sow doubt in our election system. The president has been doing this since 2020. He’s talking falsely about how our elections were rigged in 2020. He’s been talking about how the elections we just had in Los Angeles were rigged. He said in the State of the Union this year that if he and his party don’t win in November, then the 2026 are rigged. The president has come out against mail-in voting and absentee voting. The president is already starting to do this by suing states across the country, including Michigan, for their voter rolls. He has particularly taken a sharp look at the city of Detroit and in Wayne County. This is all part of a bigger play to sow doubt into the efficacy of our elections.

3⃣ Suggest that there is a crisis threatening our elections. This is all about amping up the stories and the coverage and the tweets about how we are actually in an emergency. That our elections are so unsafe, so problematic, that the president has to declare some sort of emergency.

4⃣ Respond to the perceived threat. Once you’ve created an emergency and you’ve said our elections are under threat, now the head of state has to respond to that emergency. Maybe they send the uniform military; maybe they send the federal law enforcement; maybe they feel the need to be on location at polling places. Maybe now they are seizing ballots and voting machines.

5⃣ If none of that works and the elections don’t go the way of the leader, completely question the results. Sue to try and have them overturned. We lived through this in 2020, and as someone who, on January 6, barricaded herself in her own office, we’ve seen that President Trump does not accept the results of elections that he loses.

I hope all Michiganders had a restful and reflective Juneteenth. As a nation, we recognize the day Union soldiers entered Galveston, Texas, to notify slaves of their freedom, two whole years after the Emancipation Proclamation, on June 19, 1865.

On Juneteenth, we celebrate and honor the day that turned the page on the horrible chapter of slavery. It is an important milestone, and a reminder that the fight for justice and equality is never over. It only recently became a federal holiday after a decades-long effort. I proudly voted to enshrine Juneteenth as a federal holiday in 2021.

Charles H. Wright Museum

There is no better way to spend Juneteenth than in Detroit at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The exhibits tell the story of African American history through time, and the very specific role Detroit plays in that history. If you haven’t been in a while, schedule a visit. It was hopping!

Supporting black-owned vendors in Detroit

I kept my Juneteenth celebration going with a stop at the Detroit People’s Food Co-Op. They were having a fair to support local vendors, enjoy great food, and connect with neighbors in a space built by the community, for the community.

I hope you were able to take to time to reflect on this important holiday. Including how far we have come, and how much more work we have to do to ensure we live up to our promise as a nation.

By some estimates, that war is costing American taxpayers $1 billion a day.

Additionally, this budget’s high price tag comes as the President has cut healthcare, food assistance, cancer research and other programs vital to Michiganders.

While I am a no out of committee, I am keeping my options open for support when the NDAA comes to the floor of the Senate.

This is a tough vote for me, because I worked hard to secure key wins for Michigan, including $200 million to build a new F-15EX hangar and fix the runway at Selfridge, and $4.4 million to a joint training center at Camp Grayling.

I also worked to include my AI Guardrails Act which for the first time will set left and right limits on the Pentagon’s use of AI, a full ban of Chinese vehicles on U.S. military bases both at home, like at Selfridge and Battle Creek, and abroad, as well as our bill to cover cancer screenings for federal firefighters.
