There have been plenty of moments in Western history when the people in charge were incompetent, deluded or simply overwhelmed by events.

Kings have marched armies into disasters. Governments have destroyed currencies. Political leaders have sleepwalked into wars they neither intended nor understood. Empires have bankrupted themselves defending positions they could no longer afford to hold.

Bad leadership is nothing new.

What is new, and if you ask me, genuinely unnerving, is the mismatch between the quality of the people currently governing the West and the severity of the world they have inherited.

At precisely the moment when the Western world requires restraint, strategic intelligence, industrial competence, fiscal discipline and an almost obsessive awareness of unintended consequences, it has produced a political class seemingly incapable of leaving anything alone.

Everywhere. All at once. There isn’t a single leader in the West capable of anything substantial.

Almost nobody in power seems capable of saying the word that may now be most urgently required:

Stop.

Stop spending money you do not have.

Stop borrowing against generations not yet born.

Stop assuming every problem requires a government solution.

Stop pretending that every dispute on the planet is a vital Western interest.

Stop confusing activity with competence.

The world that allowed this political class to flourish is disappearing.

For thirty years after the Cold War, the West enjoyed an extraordinary historical luxury. America was overwhelmingly dominant. Globalisation delivered cheap goods. Credit was plentiful. Energy was available. The dollar system sat at the centre of world commerce. Military adventures could be launched against states that posed little danger of striking the Western homeland in return.

Most importantly, mistakes could be concealed.

The West is more indebted. Its populations are older. Much of its industrial capacity has migrated elsewhere. Productive skills have been allowed to disappear. Social trust has weakened. Its competitors are stronger. And the global system is becoming more fragmented, more militarised and considerably less forgiving.

Yet our governing class continues to behave as though its margin for error were unlimited.

That is the part I find most disturbing.

We have produced leaders suited to administering the comfortable world of yesterday just as that world is disappearing beneath their feet.

They were trained to manage systems, not build them. To communicate, not produce. To construct consensus, not challenge assumptions. To intervene, not exercise restraint.

And now they are confronted by a world that demands almost precisely the opposite qualities.

Western dominance is ending. That process is, in my view, inevitable, and historically speaking, inevitable.

And that means the rest of us need to start thinking very seriously about what comes next.

The West Has Survived Catastrophe Before

The West has been disastrously led before. In 1914, some of the most advanced societies on earth allowed a regional crisis to escalate into an industrial war that killed millions. The leaders involved were not all madmen; many believed they were acting rationally, that escalation could be controlled, and that the war would be short. They were wrong on almost every count.

The interwar years were hardly better. The Great Depression shattered confidence in governments and institutions, extremism spread across Europe, and the democracies repeatedly delayed confronting dangers they did not want to face. The result was another war on an even greater scale: destroyed cities, rationing, mass displacement and the near ruin of an entire continent.

Then came the 1970s. Vietnam, Watergate, oil shocks, inflation, strikes and a deep sense that Western capitalism had exhausted itself. Britain looked increasingly ungovernable. America looked politically broken. Once again, there was no shortage of people announcing that the system had reached the end of the road.

Yet each time, the West recovered, albeit mostly on printed Federal Reserve notes.

The United States possessed an extraordinary manufacturing base. Europe still had vast pools of skilled labour and practical knowledge. Engineers, machinists, miners, toolmakers, mechanics, farmers and shipbuilders were embedded throughout society. Energy was abundant, populations were younger, debt burdens were lower and institutions retained far more public confidence than they do today.

There was depth in the system. Political leaders could make terrible mistakes and still draw upon enormous reserves of productive strength. That is the part of the historical comparison that is usually missed.

This Time the Machine Is Hollow

The deeper problem is not simply bad leadership. It is that the machine beneath the leadership has been hollowed out.

For decades, the West has been consuming capital accumulated by previous generations: financial capital, industrial capital, institutional capital and cultural capital. We have treated inherited strength as though it were permanent, while steadily dismantling the foundations that created it.

Nowhere is that clearer than in productive capacity.

Western economies increasingly rewarded financial engineering, administration, credentialism and consumption while allowing large parts of physical production to move elsewhere. That seemed efficient in a stable global system. If something could be bought more cheaply abroad, why make it at home?

The problem is that money and capability are not the same thing.

A government can create currency. It can borrow billions overnight. It can announce a programme, pass a bill or produce a subsidy.

What it cannot do overnight is create machinists, welders, toolmakers, engineers, shipyards, mines, refineries, electrical infrastructure, ammunition plants, semiconductor fabs or experienced farmers.

Those things are not produced by decree.

They are built over decades through training, investment, repetition and accumulated practical knowledge. Once that capability disappears, rebuilding it is slow, expensive and often far harder than politicians imagine.

The West confused the ability to buy something with the ability to produce it.

For years, that distinction seemed almost academic. Global trade worked. Shipping worked. Supply chains worked. Somebody, somewhere, could make whatever was required.

But a stable global order is precisely what is now disappearing. As the world fragments into competing blocs, supply chains become political, energy becomes strategic and industrial capacity once again becomes national power.

And suddenly the things we were happy to outsource no longer look like low-value activities from an earlier age. A country that cannot manufacture what it needs, refine what it consumes, maintain its infrastructure or supply its own military is not truly independent, no matter how large its financial sector appears on paper.

The Dumbing Down: Conformity Replacing Thought

The hollowing out is not only industrial. It is intellectual.

A civilization that loses the ability to think critically eventually loses the ability to correct its own mistakes. That may be the more dangerous decline, because factories can be rebuilt faster than habits of mind.

For years, Western education and professional life have increasingly rewarded what might be called credentialed conformity. People learn to ask, “What answer am I expected to give?” rather than, “Is this actually true?” The distinction sounds small, but over time it changes the character of institutions.

That mentality does not stop at the school gate. It moves into universities, corporations, bureaucracies, journalism and politics. Advancement often depends less on challenging assumptions than on demonstrating fluency in the accepted ones.

The result is institutionalized conformity. There has been a deliberate dumbing down of Western societies that started with Rockefeller’s move into ‘public’ education.

The current crop of Western leaders are, in temperament, Bolsheviks: collectivists who believe the group knows better than the individual, that central authority should manage ever more of society, and that dissent is not merely disagreement but something to be corrected, marginalized or punished. Across the West, genuinely independent figures are becoming rarer. Those prepared to break with the consensus, change course when the facts change, or simply refuse to repeat the approved line, people such as Thomas Massie or Marjorie Taylor Greene, are pushed to the margins while the political system rewards those who conform. The result is a governing class that may argue furiously over personalities, parties and presentation while remaining remarkably united on the fundamentals: more intervention, more centralization, more spending, more regulation and less tolerance for anyone who questions the direction of travel.

Most importantly, this mentality has a remarkable ability to survive failure.

If a policy fails, the instinct is rarely to ask whether the intervention itself was mistaken. Instead, the explanation is that it was too small, too timid, insufficiently funded or inadequately enforced.

When the policy fails, nobody asks whether the government should retreat. They ask how much larger the next programme should be.

That is a serious problem in ordinary times. In a period of economic strain, geopolitical competition and declining Western power, it becomes dangerous.

A civilization can survive bad decisions if it can recognize them, reverse them and learn.

But once conformity becomes more valuable than judgment, the system begins losing precisely the feedback mechanism that allows it to correct course.

The Ruling Class That Cannot Leave Anything Alone

The problem is not simply that individual Western politicians are foolish. Some are, some are not. The deeper problem is that almost the entire governing culture now seems to share the same instinct.

Do something. Regulate something. Subsidize something. Borrow something. Ban something. Bomb something.

Every problem demands action, and almost every action creates a second-order problem which then becomes the justification for yet more action.

Housing becomes unaffordable, so government intervenes. The intervention distorts supply, so government intervenes again. Energy becomes expensive, so it is subsidized. Debt rises, so more is borrowed. Growth slows, so spending increases. A foreign conflict begins, so escalation is proposed. Speech becomes politically inconvenient, so regulation expands. Institutions lose public confidence, and the answer is somehow to give those institutions more authority.

It is government as a perpetual motion machine.

The remarkable thing is how rarely anyone inside the system asks the most obvious question: what if the previous intervention caused the problem we are now trying to solve?

That question is dangerous because it implies something modern government finds almost impossible to contemplate: retreat. Perhaps the correct policy is not another scheme. Perhaps the subsidy should end. Perhaps the regulation should be removed. Perhaps the government should spend less. Perhaps a distant conflict is none of our business.

Perhaps adults should sometimes be allowed to make decisions without permission from an administrative body.

Programs survive the emergencies that justified them. Agencies survive the problems they were established to solve. Taxes remain after the wars end. Regulations accumulate rather than disappear. The result is a governing system that becomes larger even as its ability to produce competent outcomes appears to decline.

That is the contradiction at the centre of modern Western leadership: more power, more spending, more intervention, and less evidence that any of it is producing better government.

This is what I mean by a governing class incapable of leaving anything alone.

And in a world where resources are becoming tighter, debt is becoming heavier and strategic mistakes are becoming more dangerous, that instinct may be one of the greatest liabilities the West has.

Leadership Without Legitimacy

Britain is perhaps the clearest symbol of the problem. In little more than a decade it has cycled through prime ministers at a rate that would once have suggested a state in political crisis. New leader, new slogan, new cabinet, new promise of renewal.

And yet the direction rarely seems to change.

Increasingly, voters are discovering something politically poisonous: they can change the government without changing the governing philosophy.

The personnel rotate. The language changes. The branding is refreshed. But the underlying instincts remain remarkably durable: more spending, more borrowing, more regulation, more centralisation, more intervention abroad and ever less willingness to surrender powers accumulated by the state.

This is why collapsing trust should not be dismissed as mere cynicism. It may be a rational response to a system in which political competition feels increasingly cosmetic.

The danger comes when large numbers of people conclude that voting itself no longer meaningfully affects the trajectory of government. At that point, dissatisfaction stops being directed at a particular party or politician and begins to attach itself to the system.

That is a legitimacy crisis.

And legitimacy, once lost, is difficult to recreate. It cannot be restored by another communications strategy, another reshuffle or another promise that this time things will be different.

People eventually judge institutions by outcomes.

If living standards stagnate, debt rises, public services deteriorate, borders appear uncontrolled, infrastructure decays and foreign policy repeatedly produces crises, the public notices.

They may not agree on the cause, but they increasingly agree on the failure.

A governing system can survive incompetence for a surprisingly long time if people believe they still possess a mechanism for correcting it.

It becomes far more fragile when they no longer believe that mechanism works. The difficulty is that even when people can see deterioration, most still assume the system will continue functioning tomorrow much as it did yesterday.

That is normalcy bias.

The supermarket opens. The ATM works. The card clears. The electricity comes on. The bank transfers the money. The border remains open. The passport works. The police answer the phone. For now.

Because these things have worked almost every day of our lives, we quietly begin to treat them not as systems, but as facts of nature.

They are not.

They are arrangements. And arrangements can fail.

The End of Western Dominance

For several centuries, the global system became progressively more Western-centred. European empires dominated trade, finance and military power, and after 1945 the United States inherited and expanded that position. When the Soviet Union collapsed, Western predominance became extraordinary. For a brief period, there was no serious rival system.

That period is ending.

Western dominance is ending.

That does not mean Western civilization disappears, or that every Western country becomes poor. It means something more specific: the ability of a relatively small group of Western states to set the political, financial and military rules for much of the world is fading.

The emerging order will be more fragmented and less obedient.

A declining hegemon is often more dangerous than a secure one because it repeatedly attempts to preserve a position that the underlying balance of power no longer supports.

And the sooner individuals understand that distinction, the sooner they can begin preparing for the much less predictable world that follows.

The Endless-War Contradiction

Perhaps nothing illustrates the problem better than Donald Trump and the promise of “no new wars.”

It was one of the most important parts of his appeal. Millions of Americans were tired of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and the broader assumption that every crisis somewhere on the planet required an American response. They wanted less foreign adventurism, less nation-building and less policing of the world. Trump understood that mood and repeatedly presented himself as the president who would stop the endless wars. Even the current White House biography describes ending endless wars as part of his mandate.

And yet here we are.

The United States is now six months into a war with Iran that began in February. What was initially presented as a limited operation has become a prolonged conflict involving disrupted oil supplies, attacks around the Gulf, enormous military expenditure and no obvious political resolution.

Trump himself rejects the suggestion that this contradicts his “no new wars” message. But politically, the contradiction is difficult to miss.

The electorate changed the driver.

The vehicle kept travelling in the same direction.

That is bigger than Trump. It tells us something about the enormous institutional momentum behind Western interventionism. Presidents change. Prime ministers change. Parties change. The rhetoric changes. Yet the machinery of sanctions, military deployments, intelligence operations, alliance commitments and escalation remains remarkably difficult to stop.

Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya were disastrous enough, but they were wars fought during a period of overwhelming Western military superiority against states incapable of threatening the existence of the United States or Europe.

The world emerging now is different. Russia is a nuclear power. China is a nuclear power. The United States is confronting Iran while simultaneously managing commitments in Europe and Asia. The global order is becoming multipolar just as the West appears unable to abandon the habits it developed when it was unchallenged.

For decades, Western leaders have demonstrated extraordinary confidence in their ability to control escalation. Sanction them a little more. Move the red line. Send another weapons system. Launch a limited strike. Apply enough pressure and the other side will eventually back down.

Perhaps.

But eventually somebody calculates incorrectly.

And in a world of nuclear weapons, hypersonic missiles and competing great powers, there are mistakes from which there is no recovery.

That is what should make people nervous.

The margin for political stupidity is becoming smaller.

So What Does the Individual Do?

After all of this, the practical question becomes unavoidable: what should the individual actually do?

The answer is not panic. It is not endless doomscrolling, obsessing over politics or convincing yourself that collapse is arriving next Tuesday. Nor is it necessarily disappearing into the mountains with twenty years of freeze-dried food.

The answer is resilience.

The conventional preparedness mantra is often reduced to gold, grub and guns. It is crude, but the basic logic is sound.

Grub comes first because food and water are the most immediate forms of resilience. You do not need a warehouse full of survival rations. You need enough basic supplies that a disruption lasting does not instantly become a personal crisis.

Food, water, essential medicines, backup power, basic tools and the ability to cook or function when ordinary conveniences disappear are not signs of paranoia. They are insurance against the assumption that complicated systems will always work perfectly.

The principle is simple:

Reduce your dependence on everything functioning every day.

Boring preparedness is generally better than theatrical preparedness. Useful skills matter. Knowing how to repair something, grow something, cook something or solve a practical problem is probably worth more than owning an impressive collection of gadgets you have never used.

Then there are precious metals.

The traditional phrase says gold, but readers of SGTreport will know that we have always advocated silver as well.

A bank deposit is a liability of a bank. A bond is a promise from a borrower. A currency exists within a monetary system ultimately managed by governments and central banks.

Physical gold and silver simply exist in your possession.

If you believe governments are financially irresponsible, if you can see debts accumulating far faster than the productive economies underneath them, then it makes little sense to keep 100 percent of your accumulated wealth inside financial structures controlled by those same institutions.

You do not have to abandon the financial system. You do have to question the wisdom of being completely dependent upon it.

Gold has obvious advantages as concentrated, portable wealth. Silver has always appealed for different reasons: it is accessible in smaller denominations, has substantial industrial demand and gives ordinary people another means of holding tangible wealth outside the financial system.

We have advocated both for years because the principle is the same: own something real.

Finally, there are guns.

Periods of economic or political instability do not always produce social disorder.

But sometimes they do.

And relying entirely upon the assumption that somebody else will arrive in time to protect you is simply another form of dependence.

So the conventional advice remains good.

Have food and water. Own gold and silver. Have useful skills. Reduce debt where you can. Maintain the ability to protect yourself. Build resilience into your household before everybody suddenly decides resilience is necessary.

Gold, grub and guns.

All sensible.

All worth doing.

The Missing Preparation: Mobility

One of the strangest omissions I’ve always found in the preparedness world is mobility.

People think hard about food, water, firearms, precious metals, generators, land, wells and how far they live from the nearest major city. Many deliberately move somewhere rural and assume that distance itself is a form of immunity. The logic is understandable: get out of the urban centres, reduce dependence on fragile systems, become more self-sufficient and put yourself somewhere quieter, safer and harder to disrupt.

All of that can be sensible.

But it can also create a dangerous illusion: that because you have chosen a safe place, you are safe.

History does not work like that.

Wars move. Front lines move. Governments change. Tax systems change. Infrastructure fails. Criminality spreads. Droughts happen. Fires happen. Political violence moves into places that once seemed remote from it. A quiet rural refuge can become strategically important, economically unviable or simply trapped on the wrong side of events.

The preparedness mindset often assumes that the answer to instability is to dig in deeper. More supplies. More land. More security. More self-sufficiency.

Sometimes that is exactly right.

But sometimes the correct response is the opposite.

Sometimes you need to leave.

That is why mobility should be treated as a form of preparedness in its own right. Not as an afterthought, and not merely as owning a passport, but as preserving the practical ability to change location when circumstances change.

Can you move your family if you need to? Can you access money from somewhere else? Do you have documents in order? Do you have useful skills that travel with you? Could you live in another state, another country or another jurisdiction if your current one became hostile to your interests?

Most importantly, are you psychologically capable of abandoning the plan you were certain was going to protect you?

That last part is harder than it sounds.

People become invested in their refuge. They tell themselves they have found the answer. They buy the property, build the retreat, stack the food and convince themselves that this is where they will ride out whatever comes.

And perhaps they will.

You can do everything “right.” You can leave the city, buy the land, build the retreat, stock the shelves, own the metals and prepare for the disruption.

But it still misses something important.

What if the disaster comes to you?

Don’t Be a Pot Plant

There is an old story about a Frenchman who saw the Second World War coming and decided he wanted no part of it. Looking at Europe and the direction events were taking, he supposedly searched for somewhere so remote, so strategically insignificant and so far removed from the centres of power that the war could simply pass him by. He chose Guadalcanal, a distant island in the Solomon Islands, thousands of miles from Europe and, at the time, seemingly about as far from the coming conflict as a man could reasonably get.

You can see the logic. He had recognized the danger early, which already put him ahead of most people. He was willing to move, willing to abandon familiarity and willing to act before the crisis became obvious to everyone else. By almost any measure, this was exactly the sort of person who should have avoided the disaster.

Then history changed the map.

Guadalcanal suddenly mattered. The Japanese began building an airfield there, the Americans landed in August 1942, and the island became the site of one of the most important and brutal campaigns of the Pacific War. A place selected precisely because it appeared irrelevant to the conflict became strategically vital.

I have never been able to verify the identity of the Frenchman, so I regard the story as an anecdote rather than established history. But the lesson is too good to ignore, because it captures something that is routinely missed in discussions about preparedness.

He got almost everything right. He saw the danger, acted early, moved far away and chose somewhere that looked extraordinarily safe based on the information available at the time. He actually got the mobility issue, he moved to avoid it. yet he still got one thing wrong: he assumed that the place which was safe when he chose it would remain safe.

That is where the pot plant comes in.

A pot plant can thrive beautifully while the conditions around it remain favourable. Put it somewhere sunny, water it regularly and it may flourish for years. But it has one fatal weakness: it cannot move. If the environment changes, the plant stays exactly where it was placed.

Human beings should not make the same mistake.

There is nothing wrong with moving somewhere safer. There is nothing wrong with buying land, building a resilient home, leaving a deteriorating city or choosing another country altogether. The mistake comes when you turn that decision into a permanent conclusion and tell yourself, I moved somewhere safe, therefore I am safe.

You are not. You have chosen somewhere that appears safer under the conditions that exist at the time. Those conditions can change, sometimes gradually and sometimes with astonishing speed.

Very cool for sure, we should all be so wise, but it would be a mistake for Jeff to think because he has built somewhere safe, that it will remain safe. What happens if the modern day equivalent of the Battle of Gettysburg happens right next to him?

That is why the real objective is not simply to find a refuge. It is to preserve your ability to leave the refuge if circumstances change. Put down roots, build community and make your position resilient, but do not make yourself immovable.

Preparation without flexibility can become another form of normalcy bias. You prepare carefully for the disaster you expect while quietly assuming that the disaster will happen somewhere else.

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes Guadalcanal comes to you.

Don’t be a pot plant.

Stockdale: Optimism Without Delusion

We are facing future dangers that are probably nearer at hand than most people care to admit. That does not mean we should live in fear, and it certainly does not mean surrendering to the belief that everything is doomed.

There is a better way to think about it, and James Stockdale understood it better than most.

Stockdale spent years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, enduring torture, isolation and uncertainty. Looking back on that experience, he made an observation that has become known as the Stockdale Paradox. The prisoners who often struggled most were not necessarily the pessimists. They were the simplistic optimists, the men who convinced themselves they would be home by Christmas, then by Easter, then by the next Christmas. Each deadline passed, reality refused to cooperate, and eventually their optimism broke under the weight of repeated disappointment.

Stockdale’s approach was much harder. He believed you had to retain absolute faith that you would prevail in the end, while at the same time refusing to hide from the brutal facts of your present situation.

That distinction matters enormously now.

Acknowledge that Western dominance is ending. Acknowledge the debt, the industrial decline, the political incompetence and the increasing danger of geopolitical miscalculation. Do not soften those facts simply because they are uncomfortable.

But do not confuse recognizing danger with accepting defeat.

The entire purpose of preparation is to preserve choices. Food, water, gold and silver, personal security, useful skills, mobility and the willingness to change course are not expressions of despair. They are expressions of confidence that whatever happens around you, you intend to retain as much control over your own life as circumstances allow.

That is the balance we need.

Do not tell yourself everything will be fine.

Do not tell yourself everything is hopeless.

Look directly at what is coming, prepare while there is still time, and retain faith in your ability to deal with whatever arrives.

Confront the brutal facts. Believe you will prevail. Then act accordingly.

Conclusion: Prepare for Decline, Not the Apocalypse

The past 500 years of Western power is ending, probably to move to Asia where the Gold is flowing and the production is happening. I do not believe the present political class will reverse that process. If anything, its addiction to borrowing, intervention, collectivism and geopolitical escalation is likely to accelerate it.

The foundations that once gave the West room to recover from mistakes have been steadily eroded. Its economic resilience, social cohesion and strategic freedom are all thinner than they were, just as the international environment becomes harsher and less forgiving. The danger is not simply decline, but decline without the reserves that once made recovery possible.

That is a grim assessment, but it is not an argument for despair.

You are not going to save Western civilization single-handedly, and spending every waking hour raging at politicians will not make you any safer. What you can preserve is agency: the ability to make decisions for yourself and your family when circumstances change.

That means the boring things matter. Keep food and water. Reduce unnecessary debt. Learn useful skills. Own tangible assets. As stated, we have long advocated physical gold and silver for precisely this reason. If lawful and appropriate where you live, be capable of protecting yourself and your family. Keep your documents in order. Know where you could go if you had to, and make sure you have not constructed your life in such a way that leaving becomes impossible.

Most importantly, do not assume that because you have prepared for one version of the future, history is obliged to deliver that version.

Do not become the pot plant.

Put down roots, certainly. Build a home. Build friendships. Build a community. There is nothing admirable about being permanently rootless.

But never allow your roots to become chains.

The people who come through periods of historic upheaval are rarely those who predicted every twist correctly. Nobody does. They are the people who noticed when reality had changed, accepted that their previous assumptions were no longer valid, and still possessed the freedom to act.

That is the preparation I think matters most. Not preparing for one grand apocalypse, but becoming harder to trap by whatever actually happens.

The coming years may prove much more difficult than most people currently imagine. We may be far closer to serious economic, political and geopolitical disruption than is healthy, but recognizing that possibility is not pessimism. Refusing to recognize it would be foolishness.

Stockdale understood the distinction.

Confront the brutal facts. Retain faith in your ability to prevail. And preserve the freedom to move.
