• I recently participated in The Church Lab’s board retreat. I’m so excited to be part of this board, and to support TCL’s important work. TCL provided the funding for the Sowing Shalom Pilot Retreat I facilitated in March through the Empowering Experiments mini-grants. I highly recommend signing up for and participating in TCL Dialogues and Navigating Divisive Conversations training. Like so many nonprofits, TCL is facing challenging financial times. • I have been learning ASL for the past three months through the Lingvano app, and I’m now participating in DEAFinitely Fun Community, including Bible Studies. I’m really excited about that, especially after being with Mary Bacheller (Pastor of Hands for Christ Community Church in Staten Island, NYC) at the recent Denominational Celebration for Grace Communion International. Mary has known me since I was 12, and she’s amazing! Hands for Christ is such a dope ministry. Hands for Christ has been translating the Bible into ASL! Check out the website.

Prayer Needs:

• After experiencing increasing pain in my hips and thighs, I have been diagnosed with Greater Trochanteric Bursitis. I would appreciate prayers for relief.

• I am so grateful for my monthly donors. I am in need of additional donors. My monthly goal is $7K monthly, and I’m at ~$1500 per month. This past month has included such a whirlwind of powerful experiences. I facilitated the Sowing the Seeds of Shalom Pilot Retreat based on my upcoming book with InterVarsity Press, Sowing the Seeds of Shalom: Racial Healing as Spiritual Formation (working title).

My dear friend Mika Roland flew out to join Dishon in helping with the retreat. Mika and I bonded at the Anam Cara Spiritual Director’s Retreat in Colorado Springs in December 2025, and it was so wonderful to have her here with us!

We held the retreat at The Glen in Durham, NC through partnership with Jeff and Susan McSwain and Experience Reality. What an incredible blessing Jeff has been! He helped recruit participants, hosted us overnight prior to the retreat, provided the beautiful retreat space, which includes their horse Wikki, walking trails, a lake, and gorgeous areas to just sit and be, they funded the meal provided by the amazing Chef Netta, and sponsored participants.

We had an amazing time and I learned so much about retreat hosting. The idea has expanded from four seasonal retreats around the country with one cohort of participants. I’m now thinking about four seasonal, regional retreats with virtual workshop experiences where each cohort will engage in racial healing work leading up to retreats that provide space and time to engage in the spiritual practices connected to each season (Fall = Guided Lectio Divina, Winter = Examen of Consciousness, Spring = Centering Prayer, and Summer = Imaginative Prayer), and potentially some element of pilgrimage.

I’m in discernment about locations — though it looks like possibilities include Durham, NC, Los Angeles, CA, and Indianapolis, IN. I’m thinking maybe also somewhere in Texas.

The Journey Home Retreat

The Eden Project hosts The Journey Home Retreat Experience, and fam, I have had a number of retreat experiences, and this was by far one of my faves. Some of my key takeaways:

• “We’re all trying to get back to a home we’ve never been to.” — James K.A. Smith

• “God is better than we believed him to be.”

• I am so busy doing to avoid being undone.

• There is my perception of God that has been influenced by what other people have said to me about God, and impressions I have formed based on my own brokenness, and even my misunderstanding of scriptures. It is not who God really is. My image of God (my God concept) is not the same as who God really is (God actual). 🤯 I’mma be pondering this for a minute . . .

• The importance of awareness, admission, attunement, attachment, and alignment.

• I want to crave being with God so much that it’s the first thing I seek when I wake up, it’s where I run to throughout the day, and it’s the last thing I experience before I fall asleep.

• Being together and sharing how we really are in a triad of trusted folks is amazing! The folks I connected with in my triad at the retreat are my new sisters, and we’re going to continue our triad virtually.

• I was never meant to stay an acorn. I am an oak of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor! (Isaiah 61:3) 🥹🙌🏽🙏🏽🛐 ✨🤲🏽

Reckon With Convening

I am a coach with Reckon With, where folks who have been racialized as White acknowledge and repair racial harm in their families, relationships, and the institutions they’re connected with. We recently had our first convening, and it was such a powerful time!

We learned about the Maskoke (Muscogee) people through the teaching of Dr. Marcus Briggs-Cloud and I about the importance of Land and Labor Acknowledgments (Indigenous and Enslaved Africans).

We experienced time together with participants, advisors, elders and community members planning for how we will engage with the folks in our lives leading up to, on, and following July 4th. 2026 represents the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and we need to be intentional about calling our people in.

We also experienced the Equal Justice Institute Sites for the first time.

The Legacy Museum

There are no photographs allowed inside the museum, but here’s what I remember most and what I’m pondering:

• The Middle Passage — I am claustrophobic. Does something in my DNA remember my ancestors being on the ship for months? Chained, cold, cramped, sick, assaulted, no bathroom, sharks following the ships . . .

• The Pens — You are standing on a site where enslaved people were warehoused. Interacting with holograms in cages representing enslaved people — children, adults, elderly . . . Families ripped apart. The cruelty of selling people. “Slavery is the next thing to hell.” — Harriet Tubman

• Trafficked — not only were people sold as property, some of the women were “advertised” as “fancy women” which targeted them for sexual assault.

• The Soil — 400 jars of soil taken from the sites of lynchings around the United States. 400 jars on each side of a wall. 800 total. 6500 people were lynched between 1865 — 1950, as documented by The Equal Justice Initiative. Many more were never documented.

• The link between enslavement and mass incarceration.

• Resistance to Racial Integration — The eyes and facial expressions of those who fought against integration. Void, cruel, vacant, gleeful, young . . . My God!

• Voting Tests — Black folks used to have to answer questions like how many bubbles are in a bar of soap and how many seeds are in a watermelon in order to vote.

The National Memorial for Peace and Justice

Warning (this content is especially heavy so only read it when you’re ready):

What I remember:

• The totals of people who came to watch people being lynched included numbers as high as 1,000 — 2,000 — 3, 000 — 5,000 — 10,000 — 15,000. Lynchings were advertised in newspapers like we advertise concerts and festivals, and participants brought their children to witness (My God! Why would they ever bring their children to watch someone/people being tortured and murdered?!?), they made post cards, and took parts of the people’s bodies as souvenirs. I wonder what became of those people in attendance, especially the children? What could a child’s mind make of something like that?

• Several of the steel beams documenting the lynchings in different counties include so many names on the same day.

• Babies, children, teenagers, elderly, and pregnant women were lynched.

• Hundreds of Black men, women, and children were lynched during a massacre in 1919 in Arkansas.

• Mecklenburg County is laying the groundwork for claiming the beam with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Remembrance Project.

Things that people were lynched for:

• Drinking from a well

• Reporting crimes

• Not allowing a White man to beat them in a fight

• Refusing to give up land

• Annoying a White woman

• For leaving work without permission

• Frightening a White girl

• Refusing to run an errand for a White woman

The Freedom Monument Sculpture Park

• Here’s a link to a YouTube video (5 minutes) about the Sculpture Park, and a longer video (11 minutes).

• 10 million people were enslaved — 6 million died while enslaved — 4 million survive. I am a descendant of survivors.

• The Wall — there’s 43 foot wall, back and front, with 122,000 of formerly enslaved people. The surnames were gathered from census reports following the (legal) end of enslavement. In one of the images, notice that the surnames Russell (my maiden name) and Mills (my married name) are listed next to one another.

We still have much work to do. On March 25, 2026, the United Nations General Assembly resolved by a vote of 123 — 3 to recognize the Transatlantic Trafficking of Enslaved Africans as “the gravest crime against humanity.”

The resolution was put forward by Ghana, and proposes reparations. 52 countries abstained. The three countries who voted against this recognition? Argentina, Israel, and the United States. The rationle of the U.S. as stated by representative Ambassador Dan Negrea? “The United States does not recognize a legal right to reparations for historical wrongs that were not illegal under international law at the time they occurred.”

Lord, have mercy . . .

I’ve been seeing posts across social media platforms highlighting how outrage and protests about ICE/DHS/Border Patrol atrocities only intensified after Renee Nicole Good and Alexi Pretti were murdered, and that the murders and deaths of the People of Color by ICE and in ICE custody don’t seem to matter.

I get it. To hear people say that folks aren’t going to be moved until ICE kills a child while knowing how many people were not moved by the murder of 12 year old Tamir Rice in 2014 (if they were even aware of it) stings and feels like an affront. Keith Porter’s life matters, as do the lives of all who have been harmed and killed by the lurking, hunting, attacking, window-smashing, door breaking, dragging, assaulting, pepper-spraying actions of these . . . individuals (trying hard here not to dehumanize, but it’s HARD!!!).

One of the things I lament in one of the chapters of my upcoming book Sowing the Seeds of Shalom: Racial Healing as Spiritual Formation (working title) is this:

I grew up talking about the 40 acres and a mule that the descendants of enslaved Africans never received, and the reparations that are still due. I knew nothing of the atrocities of Columbus, the Indian Removal Act, the Trail of Tears, the broken treaties, the mass murders of Indigenous children at “residential schools,” until I was in my late 30s. Because of that ignorance, I never once considered how hearing me talk about these 40 acres may have been for my Indigenous siblings in the human family. 40 of whose acres? A question that didn’t occur to me until just a few years ago. Just like I was not aware for far too long about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives crisis.

Is it because I didn’t care? No. I didn’t know. It’s not an excuse, but we tend to be most aware of what impacts the people groups we belong to. When I became aware, I needed and wanted an open door to learn and do better.

This next part is particularly for those of us who are Followers of the Way of Jesus:

“Now, the older son was just returning from a hard day’s work in the field. He heard the music and dancing, so he asked one of the servants what was going on. The servant told him, ‘Your brother has come home and your father has prepared a great feast for him, because he is alive and well.’ Hearing this, the older brother became very angry and refused to go into the lodge. The father saw him brooding outside, so he went to him and urged him to come in. The older son said to his father, ‘Why can you not see? I have worked hard for you all my life, and done all that you have asked of me, but you have not even given me one small goat to have a feast with my friends. But when this son of yours, who wasted all you gave him on sexual favors with women, comes home, you kill the fattest calf for him.’ The father looked kindly into his older son’s face. ‘My son,’ he said to him, ‘you are always close to my heart, and everything I have is yours. But it is a good thing for us to celebrate with glad hearts, for your brother was dead but now is alive. He was lost, but now we have found him!’

The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard

“At the end of the day, the headman said to his manager, ‘Bring the workers in from the field and pay them, beginning from last to first.’ He paid the workers hired at the end of the day a full day’s wage. When the workers who were hired at the start of the day were paid, they expected to receive more but were paid the same amount. ‘We have worked all day in the scorching heat,’ they complained to the manager. ‘Why should we be paid the same as the ones who worked only one hour?’ ‘I am not being unfair with you, my friend,’ he said to one of them. ‘Did we not agree on the amount of a full day’s wages? Take your pay and go in peace. If I want to pay these men the same, what is that to you? Am I not permitted to be generous with what is mine? Or are you jealous because I have done a good thing?’ Creator Sets Free (Jesus) let his followers think about the story for a moment.”

Let us not be like the prodigal son’s brother who resented the return of his brother. We’re all prodigals in our own ways, and though it is important for us to reflect on and share the source of our resentment, we can’t dwell there. Let us not be like the workers who have worked all day, and resent the workers who showed up later and got the same pay. Though it is important for us to reflect on and share how unfair that feels, we’re all recipients of undeserved grace, mercy, and favor.

This is not to say this is easy, or something we should take lightly. When I think of open doors, I’mma be honest. People who participated in the January 6th insurrection (or approve of those who did), who are unapologetically cruel, who don’t care about the harm being done, who justify it, whose actions, beliefs, and decisions are blatantly hypocritical, who laugh and joke about it, and take pictures in front of the Alligator Alcatraz sign . . . To me, they are like those who treated lynchings like community gatherings, and represent a level of evil that is hard for my soul to stomach.

But that’s not everyone. In fact, it’s not most people. Some people are just now waking up to what’s happening around them — and that is by design (people ban books and honest historical accounts for sinister reasons). There’s so much we weren’t taught about one another. Our timelines of awakening may differ, but prodigals need a home to come back to, and workers need a place to labor, even if they showed up late in the day.

Is there repair to be done after so much rupture for so long? Absolutely. I’m not saying that the dinner conversation at the table will be comfortable, that there won’t be side-eyes, or that it won’t take time to build trust as we co-labor. There is anger, rage, sadness, hurt, suspicion, deep, deep wounds that are still healing, and will be for a while. But we have to lock in. There’s too much at stake. As Followers of the Way of Jesus, we are people who have been forgiven and restored, and so we extend forgiveness and restoration. The way can’t be shut. We are repairers of the breach (Isaiah 58:12).

We have work to do, and we need everyone in position. All weavers, visionaries, front line responders, builders, caregivers, storytellers, disrupters, healers, and guides. If we’re about this work, there’s room at the table. Pull up a chair. Welcome home. We have an empire to resist. We who have ears to hear, let us hear what Spirit is saying . . .

If you’re anything like me, you’re feeling the weight of our times . . . the harm, the fractures, the absurdity, the fatigue . . . the ache for something deeper when it comes to the wounds of racialization.

For a long time now, I’ve been holding onto the conviction that meaningful and lasting racial healing doesn’t begin with more information, more urgency, or even more action. It comes from the holy inner and communal work of the Spirit of God.

That conviction is taking shape through the writing of Sowing the Seeds of Shalom: Racial Healing as Spiritual Formation book, and now through a related experience.

I’m grateful to share that I’ve received a mini-grant to pilot a new retreat experience called Sowing the Seeds of Shalom. It will be a gathering designed to offer a Christ-centered, spiritually rooted healing space for a small group of Followers of the Way of Jesus across racial identities who long to be the aroma of the kin-dom of God that God intends for us to be, and who want to do the deep inner work that makes true growth possible.

The heart of this retreat is not just “rest” in the self-care sense. It’s rest as a spiritual posture — the kind that becomes possible when we engage in:

• engaging in prayerful dependence, acknowledging the origins of racial harm, the wounds we carry, and the systems that shape us, and that they cannot be healed by human effort alone, but

• acknowledgment that through God’s loving, supernatural guidance, courage, and strength within and among us that meets us in places deeper than intellect or intention, we can change.

• deep listening to truly receive another person’s story.

• holy curiosity, asking “What do I need to unlearn/learn?” instead of “How do I fix this?”

• vulnerability with safety, honoring both courage and consent in what we choose to share.

• embodied awareness, noticing how our stories live in our bodies, not just our minds.

• honest self-reflection, examining the narratives we’ve inherited and the ones we’ve internalized.

• communal belonging, moving from isolation or defensiveness into shared dignity and trust.

• rest as grounding, not escape, creating space to breathe, connect, and be held by God and community.

This retreat is not a workshop, or a training. It’s a place where racial healing begins with spaciousness, where the Spirit has room to work.

And this is just the beginning.

My hope is that this pilot retreat will grow into a full seasonal retreat series, following the rhythm of nature: Fall’s release, Winter’s rest, Spring’s beginnings, and Summer’s flourishing. A journey of healing that unfolds over time.

Hey, Fam. I’m writing to update you on how the writing process is coming along for Sowing the Seeds of Shalom. First, though, I want to take a moment to hold space for the harm, hurt, and brokenness in the world.

Pause. Breathe in. Fill your lungs. Hold. Breathe out. Repeat as many times as needed.

I acknowledge the ache, the fear, the disbelief, the sadness, the anger, the numbness that comes with constant exposure to cruelty and absurdity. At the same time, I will hold on to hope, no matter how small it feels at times. It is an act of resistance. It is an act of re-membering. It is an act of holding on to what truly endures . . .

I will not make the mistake of checking out to the point that I am not aware of or present to the suffering in the world. For me, that would be selfish and I’m really trying to shift into a communal way of being. I will also not make the mistake of allowing the incessant stream of unspeakable brutalities to push me into losing connection to humanity and hope. Both are treasured gifts, and we can hold more than one thing at a time.

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve truly enjoyed prepping for a deep dive into continuing to write the book. I cleaned up my office which had been a hot mess. I would like to say it was like that because of my shoulder recovery, but that would be false. It was a hot mess before that. But now it looks great! I can actually sit in my chair, and I have researched and organized the books I’ll both be citing and recommending.

As I’ve been planning the remainder of the writing journey, I’ve been contemplating the best way to support readers through the spiritual practices that can support a racial healing journey. There are so many books that came to mind, but I want the readings that accompany the practices to complement the practices, and lengthy books would make that challenging.

But picture books? I must tell you, Fam, I am obsessed with picture books. My children are young adults now, and I still enjoy picture books. Picture books can convey such powerful messages with compelling imagery in a way that is both succinct and thought-provoking. And including cross-cultural books can support the racial healing journey.

In the fall, we will explore Lectio Divina — “divine reading” or Holy Reading as Wonder — a slow, prayerful way of reading Scripture. You read a short passage several times, listening for a word or phrase that radiates, reflecting on why it stands out, praying from your heart, and finally resting in God’s presence. We Are Grateful: Otsaliheliga by Traci Sorell can be a great picture book pairing.

In the winter, we will explore the Examen of Consciousness and Conscience, or Noticing with God. The Examen is a prayerful review of the day. Consciousness means savoring moments of light and gratitude and conscience means honestly facing where we missed love and need grace. Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña can be a helpful picture book pairing.

In the spring, we will explore Centering Prayer, or Quieting into God’s Love. Centering/contemplative prayer is a practice of quiet presence. You sit in silence, choose a simple sacred word, and return to it whenever thoughts wander, resting in God’s love beyond words. A Big Mooncake for Little Star by Grace Lin can be a great picture book pairing.

And in the summer, we will explore Imaginative Prayer, or Entering the Story with Jesus. Imaginative prayer, rooted in Ignatian spirituality, invites you to picture yourself inside a Scripture scene, seeing, hearing, even smelling the story as it unfolds, and to speak with Jesus there. Islandborn by Junot Diaz can be a helpful picture book pairing.

What saddens me is that while I’ll be encouraging readers to check these picture books out from the library, I was reminded that there communities around the country that are pulling these books from the shelves. I will mention book banning and encourage readers to buy them from used or independent bookstores if they are able, or borrow them from friends. I’ve written some grants that, if funded, will allow me to make the books available for retreat participants who would be the first to experience the book’s content in an embodied way. I’ll keep you posted on that. I’m pretty excited about that possibility . . .

My siblings, I’m delighted to share that I’ve written a new piece for Missio Alliance: An Invitation to Racial Healing as Spiritual Formation. It’s a bit of a preview of what I’ll be exploring in my upcoming book, Sowing the Seeds of Shalom: Racial Healing as Spiritual Formation (working title).

In this article, I explore a conviction that has been growing in me for years: racial healing is not an optional add-on to our life of faith. It is central to our spiritual formation. We cannot be formed into the likeness of Christ while ignoring the fractures that divide God’s beloved community.

For me, contemplative practices like the Examen of Conscience/Consciousness and imaginative prayer are key. These practices draw us deeper into God’s presence and also prepare us to notice where we’ve been shaped by fear, division, or indifference. They help us receive God’s healing love in those very places and extend that love outward.

Racial healing, then, becomes a spiritual pilgrimage. It’s about moving with God toward wholeness: re-membering what has been broken, and cultivating spaces where all people can belong.

What is Sowing the Seeds of Shalom?

It’s a book about the slow, tender, courageous work of healing from racial trauma in communion with the Spirit. It’s about reclaiming our bodies, honoring our identities, unlearning harmful ideas, and embracing the truth that racial healing is a sacred possibility.

It’s a spiritual formation invitation. A journey of being rooted, re-membered, and restored. And it’s for anyone who is longing for liberation and love, justice and joy, truth and tenderness.

Why IVP?

Because they understand the intersection of justice and spiritual formation. They’ve published the voices of writers I admire —people like Brenda Salter McNeil, Dominique DuBois Gilliard, and Soong-Chan Rah. I’m honored to join that chorus with my own offering.

When is it coming?

The manuscript is due in January 2026, so the book will likely be released later next year. I’ll keep you posted.
