The short version, for the skimmers (I see you, fellow tab-hoarder): you can have a brand clear enough that people actually get you, structured enough to stop draining your energy, and still flexible enough to grow as you do. No masking. No full rebrand every Monday. There’s a way to build one with me further down, but the how matters more than the pitch, so let me show you what I mean first.

Your brand needs the same thing a neurodivergent entrepreneur needs: structure flexible enough to actually work in real life.

Not a tiny beige prison.

Not a chaotic folder of “maybe this is the vibe?” screenshots.

Not a brand identity so loose that every post becomes a brand-new decision from scratch.

And definitely not a brand identity so rigid that your creative brain immediately wants to chew through the walls.

A real brand system should give you something steady to return to — without flattening the parts of you that are still growing, shifting, experimenting, and becoming.

I know this because I’ve had to learn it for myself. Shit, I’m still learning it in public.

This past May, after completing a Get It Done Week by Sage Greyson, I tried to launch my higher-ticket brand offer in early June, before I was fully ready or had a solid experience or process in place.

Not because the idea was bad. Not because the work didn’t matter. But because I didn’t have the social proof, client receipts, or case studies to fully support the kind of offer I was trying to sell yet.

And I could pretend that didn’t sting, but I’m not really in my “fake it till you make it and emotionally dissociate in Canva” era. I also didn’t (and still don’t) have the mental capacity to constantly market myself or get visible even if it kills me.

It did sting. A LOT.

Especially while also dealing with the job search in this economy, where it feels like you need experience to get hired, but you can’t get experience if nobody will hire you (even if you do know anybody working at hiring companies), no matter how many applications you send out.

It’s a weird, exhausting loop.

Apply. Wait. Hear nothing. Try again. Rewrite the resume. Rewrite the cover letter. Wonder if you’re the problem. Remember the system is also very much the problem. Repeat until your nervous system needs a snack and a dramatic stare out the window (college grads, iykyk).

That experience has made me think a lot about why I wanted to build my own business in the first place, even before I ever stepped foot on a university campus.

Not because entrepreneurship is easy. Like hell it is! I have met the admin tasks (have you?). Totally not for me.

But because building my own business gives me a chance at time, financial, and mental flexibility. It gives me a way to create income and build a life without constantly trying to squeeze myself into a corporate system that still does not fully work for my brain, my energy, or the way I move through the world (if you can relate, I see you).

And the more I talk to neurodivergent and creative business owners, the more I realize: this same tension shows up in branding too.

A lot of us are trying to build businesses that give us more freedom, but we’re still branding ourselves through rules that make us feel trapped (kinda like masking, huh). Or we swing the other way and keep changing everything, because no visual direction feels quite right for long.

So we get stuck between two exhausting options:

Look “professional” and lose ourselves. Or stay expressive and feel inconsistent.

But I don’t think those are the only options.

What I thought I needed

For a while, I thought I needed to keep changing my visuals to stay relevant.

New colors, new layouts, new logo ideas. New Canva experiments (I’m more familiar with Illustrator). New “maybe this version finally feels right” moments.

I thought if my brand didn’t feel exciting all the time, maybe it wasn’t strong enough.

I also thought I needed to make everything (including myself) as presentable as possible so people would take me seriously. Because when you’re early in business — especially as someone young, Black, female, autistic, creative, and still building proof — it’s easy to feel like your brand has to do extra labor.

It has to look polished enough. Legit enough. Strategic enough — like maybe if the visuals are “good enough,” people will finally believe you know what you’re doing (even if sometimes you don’t).

But the problem with constantly trying to prove yourself visually is that your brand can become another place where you mask. Instead of expressing your business clearly, you start performing credibility. Instead of building recognition, you keep reinventing yourself. Instead of making design decisions from a grounded place, you start designing from anxiety.

And that gets exhausting so damn fast.

What my survey responses showed me

Since the beginning of this year (halfway already!? >x<’), I’ve been collecting survey responses from creative and neurodivergent business owners about how branding has actually felt for them. Five of them so far.

Not just visually. Emotionally. Mentally. Strategically. All the messy in-between parts.

And the responses have been confirming something I already suspected: people are not only struggling with “making things look cute.” They’re struggling with being seen clearly.

One respondent described their branding as “vague and not always clear,” and said they felt like “just another hobbyist” showing off their work instead of being seen as a business (same bruh!).

That one hit. Because that is not really a font problem. That is a legitimacy problem. That is the feeling of having real work, real ideas, and real creative potential — but not having a brand that helps other people understand it yet.

Another respondent talked about being in the early stages and wanting full confidence that their plan makes sense to someone else. Again, that is not just about colors. That is about needing a mirror. A grounded second brain. Someone who can look at the ideas, the direction, the messy half-formed pieces and say: “Yes, there is something here. Let’s make it clearer.”

Another respondent, who runs a body-positive lifestyle brand and community, said one of their biggest challenges is balancing creativity with consistency. Their brain is always full of new ideas, designs, and concepts, but staying strictly within brand guidelines can feel limiting.

That is the tension. Creative people need room. But businesses need recognition. And if your brand has no structure, you risk starting from scratch every time you create. If your brand has too much structure, you might feel like you’re trapped inside a version of yourself that no longer fits.

Then another respondent said something that felt like the heart of the whole thing: they already had a logo and colors, but because they are the brand, they were trying to figure out how to put themselves out there so people could accurately get to know them. They described themselves as a warm and welcoming light, but said thinking about how people see them made them feel exposed and stressed.

Whew child!

That is branding. Not just the polished Pinterest moodboard version. The real version.

Branding can feel vulnerable because it asks: How do you want to be seen? What do you want people to understand about you? What parts of yourself are safe to show? How do you make your work recognizable without feeling like you’re putting your whole soul in a display case under fluorescent lighting?

That is why generic branding advice can fall flat for neurodivergent creatives. Because for a lot of us, branding is not just an aesthetic exercise. It’s an identity translation.

The real problem is visual decision fatigue

A lot of branding advice treats inconsistency like a discipline issue.

“Pick your colors and stick with them.” “Use the same fonts.” “Stay on brand.” “Be recognizable.”

And yes, those things matter. But that advice skips over the part where every visual decision can feel weirdly loaded when you are building a business around your creativity, your values, your lived experience, your identity, and your work.

For neurodivergent creatives, inconsistent branding is often not laziness. It is often visual decision fatigue.

Every post becomes a new decision. Every color feels negotiable. Every font becomes a personality test. Every trend makes you question your whole direction. Every new idea threatens to become a full rebrand.

And before you have even talked about your offer, shared your work, sent the email, or posted the thing, your brain has already spent half its energy trying to decide whether this shade of green feels like “creative clarity” or “accidental dental office.”

And we both know that ain’t sustainable by a long shot.

And it is one of the reasons I believe creative business owners need brand structure earlier than they think. Not necessarily a huge luxury rebrand. Not necessarily a massive agency-level identity. But some kind of strategic visual foundation that helps them stop making every decision from zero.

Because without that structure, your brand can quietly drain energy from the very work it is supposed to support.

You do not need brand jail. You need a brand home base.

This is where I think branding gets misunderstood. Structure does not have to mean restriction. And flexibility does not have to mean chaos. A supportive brand system gives you both.

I like to think of it in four parts:

1. Anchors

These are the pieces that keep your brand recognizable. Your values. Your audience. Your visual mood. Your core colors. Your typography style. Your brand personality.

Your anchors answer: “What makes this feel like us?” They give your brand a center of gravity.

2. Rules

These are the simple guidelines that reduce decision fatigue. Which colors are primary? Which fonts are for headlines? What kind of imagery fits? What should your graphics feel like? What are you absolutely not doing?

Rules are not there to punish your creativity. They are there to stop your brain from having to reinvent the wheel every time you open Canva, Illustrator, Notion, or whatever design tool is currently witnessing your spiral.

3. Range

This is the flexible part. Range gives your brand room to breathe. Maybe you have seasonal variations. Maybe you have different content series. Maybe your brand can be more playful in one space and more grounded in another. Maybe you can experiment with layouts, textures, illustrations, or campaign visuals without abandoning the whole identity.

Range answers: “How can this brand evolve without losing itself?” Because your business is allowed to grow. Your ideas are allowed to mature. Your visuals are allowed to shift. But they should not have to collapse and rebuild from scratch every time you change.

4. Return points

These are the tools you come back to when you feel scattered. A brand sheet. A mini guide. A visual direction board. A folder of approved assets. A set of rules that reminds you what belongs.

Return points are especially important for neurodivergent entrepreneurs like us, because we often rely on external structure and routines to reduce or even prevent the overwhelming clusterfuck that is our minds. When your brain is tired, you should not have to decode your entire brand from scratch. You should be able to return to something clear. Something that says: “This still fits.” “Start here.” “Use this.” “You do not need to rebuild the whole thing today, beloved.”

Why this matters for your business

Your brand is not just how your business looks. It affects how easy it is to show up. It affects how much energy content takes. It affects how confident you feel sending someone to your page, website, offer, or inquiry form. It affects whether people can recognize you over time. It affects whether your business feels like something you can actually stand behind.

That is why “I’ll think about my brand later” can become a trap. Because if your brand feels scattered, unclear, or disconnected from the depth of your work, you may avoid showing up before anyone else even gets the chance to understand what you do.

You may keep tweaking instead of sharing. You may keep hiding behind “I’m still figuring it out.” You may keep waiting until everything feels polished enough.

And listen. There is nothing wrong with being in progress. I am very much in progress. But being in progress does not mean your brand has to feel like a junk drawer with a business license.

You can have structure before you have everything figured out. You can have a place to land before you are “fully established.” You can have a brand that grows with you instead of one you have to keep escaping.

What I actually needed wasn’t constant reinvention. I needed enough structure to remember who I am — and enough room to keep growing, because I’m still growing and so is my business. A brand that can’t evolve with you isn’t a brand system. It’s a costume.

And that’s the exact thinking behind my paid experiment.

This is why I’m opening The Brand Bloom System

Instead of pushing my higher-ticket offer before I have the proof to fully support it, I’m turning it into a small paid experiment for founding clients.

It ain’t for you if you want a fully polished agency experience with years of case studies behind it. And it definitely ain’t for you if you want unlimited revisions or a massive brand universe for the beta price.

This is a paid experiment. A thoughtful one. A strategic one. But still an experiment. That means I will be honest about what I can offer, what I am testing, and what kind of feedback I need from founding clients.

The bigger lesson

If you’re a neurodivergent creative entrepreneur, hear this: you don’t need to wait until your business is “big enough” to build your brand with intention, and you don’t need one that traps you to be taken seriously.

Golden Goods was created to explore something softer —
a brand rooted in warmth, nostalgia, and care.

Centered around homemade lemon curd crafted in a English coastal house, this brand concept turns a simple pantry item into something emotional, giftable, and quietly special.

Because not everything wholesome needs to feel like a health lecture.

The Brief (Client Challenge)

The brand needed to:

• center lemon curd as the hero product

• feel small-batch and handcrafted

• communicate quality without over-explaining

• work across jars, gifting, and seasonal releases

The tension?

Creating something that feels nostalgic…
without looking stuck in the past, if you know what I mean.

Strategic Exploration

I didn’t start with visuals — I started with feeling.

Because this isn’t just lemon curd.
It’s memory, comfort, and small moments.

Questions guiding the process:

• What does “wholesome” actually feel like?

• How do you design nostalgia without relying on vintage clichés?

• How can packaging communicate quality and care before it’s even opened?

Creative Direction

The name Golden Goods reflects both product and feeling:

warmth, richness, and something worth keeping.

Visual direction:

• Golden yellows + soft neutrals → warmth and sunlight (like citrus)

• Friendly typography → approachable, not stiff

• Clean layouts → letting the emotion carry the brand

Guiding idea:

👉 this should feel like it was made for someone — not just sold to them

Final Outcome

Golden Goods feels:

• personal instead of mass-produced

• warm instead of overly polished

• emotional without being overly sentimental

The system extends naturally into:

• Jar packaging

• Seasonal collections

• Gift sets and bundles

• Market or online storefronts

Why This Works

Because it focuses on emotional truth over visual trends.

It doesn’t try to look nostalgic —
it aims to feel nostalgic.

And people can tell the difference.

Reflection & Learnings

This project pushed me to trust my process more:

• I design through emotion first, visuals second

• clarity often starts away from the screen

• not everything needs to be loud to be meaningful

If revisited, I’d refine:

• Typography hierarchy

• More cohesive packaging mockups and brand imagery

• Overall visual and system consistency across touchpoints

But the foundation?
Strong, intentional, and built to last.

Project Overview

Most patisserie brands fall into one of two traps:
they’re either overly precious and intimidating… or overly playful and forgettable.

CouCou Pâtisserie was built to sit right in the middle — where French craftsmanship meets warmth, charm, and actual approachability.

Because honestly?
no one wants to feel judged while ordering a croissant.

This concept project explores how strategy-led design can turn a simple bakery idea into a brand that feels human, inviting, and just a little bit irresistible.

The Challenge

The goal was to create a French-inspired patisserie brand that felt:

• artisanal, but not elitist

• playful, but still high-quality

• comforting, not performative

• flexible across packaging, signage, and social

The real tension?

Holding onto the romance of French patisserie culture…
without making people feel like they need to “act fancy” to belong there.

My Strategic Approach

Before touching design software, I mapped out the emotional and cultural layers of the brand by hand on paper (analog much, I know).

Because this wasn’t just about visuals —
it was about creating a feeling people recognize instantly, even the very second before they walk in.

I kept circling back to a few questions:

• What does a warm patisserie actually feel like?

• How do you balance tradition with playfulness without losing either?

• What makes someone come back… not just once, but weekly for coffee breaks?

Brand Pillars

Six core themes shaped the direction:

Artisan
Craft over perfection. Handmade, small-batch, and human.

Pâtisserie
Delicate, sensory, and rooted in French food culture.

Sweet
Soft, comforting, indulgent — visually and emotionally.

Playful
Light, joyful, and never too serious.

Warm
Inviting, friendly, and genuinely welcoming.

French
Romantic and cultural — without leaning on clichés.

These weren’t just keywords —
they became the filter for every decision.

Creative Direction

The name CouCou (a casual French greeting) set the tone immediately:

friendly, a little playful, and easy to approach.

From there, the visuals followed:

• Soft, rounded typography → to mirror warmth and sweetness

• Warm neutrals + pastel accents → to balance comfort with charm

• Clean structure → but with personality baked in

The goal was simple:

👉 this should feel like a place that remembers your order
—not one that makes you second guess it

Final Outcome

CouCou became a brand that feels:

• welcoming instead of exclusive

• crafted, but not overly precious

• playful without losing quality

It’s the kind of place you don’t just visit —
you build a habit around it.

The system was designed to extend naturally across:

packaging, signage, menus, and social content

Not just a logo —
a whole damn experience.

I’ve been noticing this pattern.

A disconnect between:

• the effort someone is putting in
  and

• how real it feels (internally or externally)

You can be doing everything “right”
— showing up, posting, working on your offers —

…and still feel like your business isn’t real yet.

Like you’re playing business instead of being a business.

Like everyone else somehow figured something out that you didn’t.

And if I’m being honest (since I’m still dealing with this myself)?

That feeling doesn’t usually come from a lack of effort.
Or even a lack of skill.

And no—this doesn’t mean you’re not cut out for this.

Branding is often talked about as:

• visuals

• positioning

But underneath all of that…

it shapes identity.

Because when your brand feels:

• unclear

• unfinished

It can start to feel like you are those things.

And that creates a quiet loop:

Most branding advice prioritizes consistency.

But consistency, as it’s often taught, assumes:

• linear thinking

• fixed identity

• stable preferences

That’s not how many creative or neurodivergent people operate, including those owning a business.

Some of us:

• generate ideas constantly

• shift directions

• refine as we go

• build clarity through movement

That doesn’t weaken the brand.

It just means the system needs to be more flexible.

Maybe the goal isn’t to force creativity into consistency.

Maybe it’s to design consistency that can adapt to creativity.

I’m still sitting with that.

P.S. Reading these responses has been one of the most meaningful parts of this process.

Some chocolate needs tempering. Some just needs melting. The difference isn’t about worth — it’s about readiness.

Earlier this month I took a local chocolate and candy-making workshop at ArtLink while also trying to make homemade chocolate (to varying degrees of success) at home now and then, and I didn’t expect it to make me think bout brand and visual identity. I went because I was looking for a fun and vaguely seasonal activity to do outside the house on a weekend (not to mention I’d already paid nearly $60 to reserve my spot, so of course I was committed to going). I left thinking about the process of making different kinds of chocolate, nervous systems, and why some brands feel solid while others seem to melt the second you touch them.

One of the first things we learned was that chocolate melts around body temperature (about 98.6 F). Basically, if you hold it too long in your hands (kinda like a banana 🍌), it starts softening. Chocolate also doesn’t contain water (which would cause it to seize), which means it won’t mold the way other foods do—but it will “bloom” if the temperature fluctuates too much. That’s when you get those dull streaks or grayish patches on the surface. It’s still edible, just not as pretty or stable.

That detail stuck with me.

Because branding can bloom too.

In the workshop, we mostly worked with compound chocolate. The host chose it for practical reasons—time and budget. Compound uses vegetable fats instead of cocoa butter and doesn’t require tempering. You melt it, use it, and it sets quickly. It’s forgiving. If you’re teaching a room full of beginners and you want everyone to leave with something that looks decent, it makes sense.

Meanwhile, I’ve used both cacao powder and cacao butter when making chocolate at home. It’s customizable. It’s better for your health (depending on your diet and ingredients). It follows a similar if not the exact same recipe and process (especially when making milk or white chocolate instead of dark - or even straight from a raw cocoa bean).

Then we talked about couverture chocolate (the pricier, higher quality option).

Couverture contains cocoa butter and has to be tempered to set properly. Tempering is a controlled process of heating and cooling so the cocoa butter crystals stabilize (Form V is what you’d want). When you get it right, the chocolate sets with a glossy finish and a clean snap (and also shelf stable at room temp). When you skip that step or rush it, the texture and appearance suffer. It can turn dull or streaky even if it still technically “works.”

That difference felt important.

Compound chocolate isn’t bad. It’s convenient and cost-effective. It exists for a reason. Couverture isn’t morally superior. It just behaves differently and requires more intention to handle well. One is designed for ease and speed. The other rewards patience and structure. It’s also very useful to note that no two chocolate brands of either kind are alike (especially if you’re very particular bout flavor and texture).

Brand identity works in a similar way.

DIY branding—templates, quick logos, colors chosen on instinct—can absolutely carry you in the early stages of your business. It’s often what’s available when you’re testing ideas or watching your budget. It helps you move instead of waiting for perfection. There’s nothing shameful about starting there (even if you do have some experience with graphic design).

Strategic branding, though, is closer to tempering couverture. It takes more care. It involves research, positioning, and systems that hold up when your business grows. The goal isn’t just to look good in one moment. It’s to stay coherent when you raise your prices, shift your offers, or show up more visibly.

What really clicked for me in that class was this: the chocolate didn’t “fail” when it bloomed. It responded to its environment.

A lot of neurodivergent entrepreneurs feel like their brand is failing when it feels messy or inconsistent. Sometimes what’s happening is simpler than that. You’re holding it with bare hands in a room that’s too warm. You’re working without a recipe. You’re expected to wing it in an environment that doesn’t match how your brain processes information.

Structure isn’t there to limit creativity. In chocolate, tempering creates stability so the final piece can shine. In branding, strategy creates clarity so your ideas don’t collapse under pressure.

During the workshop, using compound chocolate made sense because we had limited time, space, and resources. Everyone left with something that set properly and looked good enough to take home (and still edible depending on who or where you buy the chocolate or “melting wafers”). If the goal had been to train a new generation of professional chocolatiers, the setup would’ve been different. The material and the method would’ve matched the outcome.

That’s the part I keep coming back to.

Maybe you’re still in the experimental stage — using what’s accessible, making it work while validating an idea, figuring out why things feel slightly off but not totally wrong. Maybe you’re starting to crave more structure, the kind that helps everything set with clarity instead of melting under pressure.

Neither stage makes you more legitimate. They just require different levels of intention.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how branding has actually felt for people like us (even as a brand designer still new to the business industry). Not what it “should” feel like, but what’s really happening inside when you look at your logo, your colors, your website. Does it feel aligned? Overstimulating? Flat? Close but not quite there?

Between personal life things (the kind I’m still holding close for now) and the emotional energy it takes to build a business from scratch, I haven’t been designing as much as I wanted due to recovering from burnout topped with creative block. I didn’t mean to disappear these past few weeks (and, honestly, months). I’m aware I haven’t been showing up as consistently online as a new business owner “should” — creating content, posting regularly, building momentum. But the truth is: life has been louder than the algorithm, and I haven’t had the capacity to juggle everything at once.

This is my soft return — a “hey, I’m still here,” a check-in, a breath.

Lately, I’ve been feeling both anxious and hollow at the same damn time — like my heart is racing while the rest of me is slowly fading into survival mode. That strange limbo where your mind is shouting, something needs to shift, but you’re too tired to make the shift happen.

I picked up a part-time job at the local arena hoping it’d give me stability, but most days it feels like I’m working in a fog of miscommunication, unanswered questions, and being left to figure things out alone. It’s draining in a way I didn’t expect.

And personally… there’s a major medical thing happening soon for someone I love deeply. I won’t go into details — partly because it’s not my story to tell, partly because I promised I wouldn’t. But the emotional weight of preparing for it, hoping for the best, and trying not to spiral… it’s a lot.

Between all of this — the job, the responsibilities, the fear, the overwhelm — my creative energy has been running on fumes. I’m trying to build a business, serve neurodivergent entrepreneurs, and show up authentically… but I don’t have the spoons or forks for big launches, new offers, or constant content right now.

So here’s the vulnerable part:
