We can encounter something profound through creativity, therapy, spiritual practice, meditation, or simply one of those inexplicable moments when life reveals itself differently. Sometimes we see something we cannot unsee.

And yet, feeling transformed is not the same as being integrated.

We can feel profoundly connected, present, or certain about what we have experienced and still be learning how to hold that knowing in our bodies. Seeing is not the same as embodying. Experiencing a truth and knowing how to live that truth are two different things.

Perhaps this is why integration cannot happen entirely alone. There is an inward part of the process—the listening, reflection, creativity, and practices that help us understand what has surfaced. But there is also a relational part. Sometimes we need someone who can help us find our way back into our bodies. Not someone who tells us what our experience means or becomes the authority over our transformation, but someone who helps us return to ourselves.

And then life becomes part of the integration too. Our relationships show us what has actually taken root: the difficult conversation, the apology, the boundary, the choice we make differently, the moment we recognize our impact on another person. Perhaps these ordinary moments are where transformation becomes real.

This is also why I have become less interested in constantly seeking the next revelation. There will always be another experience, another insight, another doorway to walk through. But at some point, we have to live what we have already been shown.

The revelation can happen in an instant. Integration happens in relationship with life.

Healing is not only what happens when something opens us. It is also what happens when we return and learn how to live with what has been revealed.

We don’t integrate so that we can return to who we were before.

We integrate because something has changed.

And now we must learn how to live with what we know.

For years, I thought healing was primarily an inward journey. And in many ways, it is. Self-awareness, compassion, and the willingness to meet ourselves honestly are all part of it.

But I’ve come to understand that even this inward journey is relational. Healing unfolds through the relationships we have with ourselves, our bodies, our emotions, one another, and the living world.

We often think of relationship as something that exists between people. But we are in relationship long before another person enters the room. We are in relationship with our breath, our thoughts, our bodies, time, creativity, silence, and nature. Every moment asks something of that relationship. But healing also asks us to move beyond what we discover within ourselves.

We can have a profound realization, experience a shift in perspective, or come to understand ourselves in an entirely new way. But insight alone doesn’t necessarily change how we relate. Eventually, whatever changes within us has to meet the world around us.

This is where healing becomes less about my experience and more about what happens between us.

There is a subtle but important difference between wanting someone to understand where I am and becoming curious about where they are. Both matter. Being relational doesn’t mean abandoning ourselves to accommodate another. It means expanding the field.

I am here.

You are here.

What is happening between us?

Perhaps this is part of what integration asks of us: allowing what has changed within us to change how we meet what is outside of us.

Meditation changes our relationship with our thoughts. Art changes our relationship with our emotions. Nature changes our relationship with stillness, wonder, and belonging. A meaningful conversation changes our relationship with our own story and sometimes with someone else’s.

This is why there are so many paths to healing. Not because each offers a different destination, but because each invites us into a different relationship with ourselves and the world around us.

Healing doesn’t always change what we experience. Often, it changes how we are in relationship with what we experience.

Relationship softens what achievement cannot. It invites us to listen instead of control. To participate instead of perfect. To witness instead of fix.

Healing may begin with the self, but it doesn’t end there. This is where healing becomes integrated. Not simply in what we come to understand about ourselves, but in how that understanding changes the way we meet the world around us.

Last week, I wrote about how healing has quietly become something we consume. A product to purchase. A protocol to follow. Another thing to optimize. But I’ve realized that products aren’t the only place we look.

Sometimes, after a practice changes us, we begin looking toward the person who introduced us to it.

When someone helps us through a difficult season, gratitude naturally follows. We become curious about how they see the world, the books they’ve read, the routines they follow. Their presence becomes part of our story.

But I’ve begun wondering what happens when admiration quietly shifts into something else. When we start trusting another person’s knowing more than our own. When we look to them for answers we once believed might exist within us.

The greatest practitioners I’ve known share something remarkable: none of them tried to become the center of the work. They created the conditions for people to discover something already present within themselves.

I can’t remember many of their exact words. What I remember is how I felt in their presence.

Seen. Safe. Curious.

More connected to myself than before I met them.

That’s the quiet work of a guide or teacher. Not to gather followers, but to cultivate trust. Not trust in them. Trust in ourselves.

The most transformative teachers hold themselves lightly. They aren’t trying to convince us they have something we don’t. If anything, they spend their time reminding us that what we’re searching for was never absent.

As someone who facilitates workshops, I think about this often. I don’t want people to leave believing I possess something they lack. I want them to leave with a deeper relationship to their own intuition, their own creativity, their own capacity to listen.

That’s the role of a guide. Not to stand between someone and their healing, but to gently step aside so they can recognize it for themselves.

And perhaps that’s the greatest gift any teacher can offer. Not more answers. But the courage to trust our own.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" It’s everywhere now…another workshop, another certification, another retreat, another promise that if you simply learn this new modality, you’ll finally become the version of yourself you’ve been searching for.

On one hand, I love that our collective relationship with healing is changing. For so long, emotional well-being was something hidden or dismissed. Today, more people are asking deeper questions, seeking support, and becoming curious about what it means to live with greater awareness. That gives me hope.

But I’ve also begun noticing something else. Somewhere along the way, healing became something we consume instead of something we remember. As though peace exists just beyond the next course. As though wholeness belongs to someone further along the path. As though healing is something another person can give us.

When I looked up the definition of healing, three words stayed with me: free, state, and return. “To heal is to become free from injury or disease, to return to a sound state.” Not achieve. Not perform. Not climb. Return. That single word changes everything.

Healing was never about becoming or transforming into someone new. It has always been about remembering the person who was there beneath the fear, the anxiety, the pain, the conditioning, and the stories that convinced us we were somehow incomplete…dare I say, broken.

Maybe that’s what has been troubling me lately, not that healing has become more visible, but that we’ve become better at marketing the guide than trusting the guide within ourselves.

Healing isn’t another rung on a ladder. It isn’t a destination reserved for those who’ve attended enough retreats or mastered enough practices. It is a relationship. One built through compassion, honesty, presence, and the quiet willingness to meet ourselves exactly where we are.

The deepest healing isn’t found in becoming more. It’s found in discovering that, beneath everything we’ve accumulated in our search to be whole, we never stopped being enough to begin with.

Last week, I wrote about the quiet moment before the first mark. The moment when nothing has appeared on the page, and yet something has already begun. I haven’t stopped thinking about it. Not because of the page. Because of what happens in my body before I ever touch it.

I’ve noticed that every time I sit down to sketch, there is a moment that feels almost invisible. My breathing changes. Sometimes my shoulders soften. Sometimes they tighten. Sometimes I feel excitement. Sometimes I feel resistance. The page hasn’t asked anything of me, and yet my body has already begun responding.

For a long time, I thought the blank page was simply where creativity began. Now I wonder if it is where awareness begins.

The page doesn’t create my fear. It reveals it.

It doesn’t create my inner critic. It introduces me to it.

It doesn’t create pressure, perfectionism, or self-doubt. Those were already there, quietly waiting beneath the surface. The openness of the page simply gives them somewhere to speak.

Perhaps that’s why the blank page can feel so expansive and so intimidating at the same time. It holds endless possibility, but it also asks something of us. Not to perform. Not to impress. Simply to notice what arises when nothing is telling us who to be.

I’ve realized that this has very little to do with sketching. The same thing happens before an honest conversation. Before saying yes to something we’ve never done. Before making a difficult decision. Before stepping into a new season of our lives.

There is often a pause where the body knows we are approaching the unknown before the mind has found the words to explain it.

And maybe that is why we rush.

We reach for our phones. We fill the silence. We keep ourselves busy. We search for certainty before we’ve allowed ourselves to simply be with the question. I wonder how much wisdom we’ve missed because we were too uncomfortable to remain in that space for even a few more moments.

SketchPoetic has taught me that the most important part of the practice isn’t learning how to make better marks. It’s learning how to stay. To stay with the discomfort. To stay with the uncertainty. To stay with the voice that says, “You’re doing it wrong,” long enough to realize that it isn’t the only voice in the room.

Because beneath that voice is something much quieter. Curiosity. Wonder. Play.

A gentle knowing that asks nothing more than, “What if you simply began?”

The blank page has become one of my greatest teachers, not because it tells me what to create, but because it faithfully reflects the relationship I have with myself before I create anything at all.

And perhaps that is the real first canvas. Not the paper resting on the table. But the landscape within us that meets it. Maybe every blank page is quietly asking the same question.

Can you remain present long enough to discover what was already waiting to emerge?

Because perhaps the greatest work we create isn’t what eventually appears on the page.

Perhaps it’s the person we become in the pause before the first mark.

For years, I’ve believed that art mirrors life. Every sketch somehow reflects the inner landscape of the person creating it. But lately I’ve begun to wonder if it goes even deeper than that. What if the act of creating doesn’t simply mirror life? What if it mirrors creation itself?

In SketchPoetic, every sketch begins the same way: a blank page, a pen, and a hand hovering just above the paper. Nothing has happened yet. And yet, everything has. The page holds every possible sketch that could ever exist. Every line, every symbol, every story already lives there in potential. But the page cannot sketch itself. Possibility, on its own, never becomes form. It waits.

I’ve come to realize that the moment before the pen touches the page has become one of my favorite places to linger. It’s almost imperceptible, but something has already begun. Before the first mark appears, the artist has already started choosing. Attention narrows. Intention gathers. Infinite possibility begins quietly condensing into a single direction. It struck me recently that perhaps creation doesn’t begin with the first mark at all. Perhaps creation begins in the narrowing.

The first mark isn’t the beginning. It is simply the first visible evidence that creation has already been underway for quite some time.

As I sat with this realization, I recognized that this isn’t something unique to artists. Every meaningful conversation begins before the first word is spoken. Every relationship begins before two people meet. Every movement begins before anyone else can see it. There is always an invisible season where possibility slowly gathers itself into intention, a quiet threshold where something begins to feel less like a choice and more like an inevitability.

Artists know this feeling well. There are moments when a piece no longer feels like something we are making. It begins to feel like something asking to be made. By the time the pen finally meets the page, the work has already found us. The mark simply reveals what has been quietly unfolding beneath the surface all along.

Perhaps life unfolds the same way.

We often think freedom means keeping every possibility alive, every door open, every path available. But creation seems to ask something entirely different of us. It asks us to choose. To allow infinite possibility to narrow into one living expression. Every act of creation is also an act of devotion. It is the willingness to let countless possibilities fall away so that one can fully arrive.

Perhaps this is why beginning can feel so vulnerable. The first mark changes everything. Once it appears, the page can never return to what it was before.

Neither can we.

The more I reflect on it, the more I wonder if our lives are simply a series of first marks. Moments when something unseen has been quietly taking shape long before anyone else could recognize it. Moments when what looked like courage from the outside was actually the natural unfolding of something that had already become inevitable within us.

Maybe this is what art has been teaching me all along. Not simply how to create, but how creation itself moves. And perhaps the greatest invitation isn’t to have all the answers before we begin.

It’s to trust the quiet moment before the mark.

I bought this fiddle leaf fig from my neighbor in January. They were moving to Barcelona and couldn’t take it with them. Knowing how much we love plants, they were relieved it was coming to a home where it would be cared for.

We placed it beside our French doors where it would receive the most sunlight. For months it flourished.

Then I began to notice that one side, which once felt majestic and beautifully balanced against the other, had become too heavy. Its branches stretched farther and farther outward until the weight began pulling the entire tree off center.

Oddly enough, I loved it. The asymmetry gave it character. The way its branches draped over my little meditation table felt almost like an embrace. But eventually I knew something had to change.

I’ll admit, I went back and forth for days. It felt less like pruning a plant and more like cutting off a limb.

What if I harmed it?
What if it never recovered?

I researched how to make the cut properly. Then, before I picked up the shears, I did something that felt completely natural to me. I asked the tree for permission.

Two months later, something beautiful happened. New leaves began to emerge. Bright, vibrant, almost luminous. The older leaves seemed stronger too. They stood a little taller. They caught the light differently. The entire tree felt…lighter.

What stays with me isn’t that talking to plants somehow made a difference. It’s that paying attention did. Seeing what was happening before it became irreversible. Having the courage to make a change, even when it felt uncomfortable.

Because this wasn’t really a pruning. It was a redirection.

Today the branches stand taller, drawn back toward one another, finding support instead of pulling away. Together, they reach upward again.

Nature has a quiet way of reminding us that growth isn’t always about adding more. Sometimes growth asks us to release what has become too heavy, so that life has somewhere new to grow.

Lately I’ve found myself saying God and Spirit in the same breath. Not because I think they are different things, but because I’m searching for the language that best reflects what I’m actually experiencing. I was raised Catholic, and God was the language I inherited. It shaped my understanding of love, faith, devotion, and mystery, and it still holds deep meaning for me.

As my life has unfolded, I’ve met people who speak of Spirit. Others speak of Consciousness. Some speak of Source, and some simply say the Universe. Different words, perhaps pointing toward the same mystery. For a long time I wondered which language was right. Now I find myself wondering whether that was ever the right question. Maybe language isn’t meant to define the Divine. Maybe it’s meant to help us relate to it.

As an artist, I’ve begun to notice something. The moments when I feel most connected while sketching don’t ask me what I believe. They don’t ask which religion I belong to, or whether I understand consciousness scientifically or spiritually. They simply ask me to listen, to become still, to pay attention, to create. In those moments, I don’t feel like I’m making something alone. I feel like I’m participating in something far larger than myself. Maybe that’s God. Maybe that’s Spirit. Maybe that’s Consciousness. I don’t know. What I do know is that something begins to move the moment I stop trying to name it and simply allow myself to be in relationship with it.

Perhaps this is why art has always felt sacred to me. Not because it gives me answers, but because it teaches me how to listen. More than anything, I want my work to become a bridge, not one that convinces people what to believe, but one that reminds us we may be speaking different languages for the same longing. Maybe the invitation isn’t to agree on the word. Maybe it’s to deepen our relationship with whatever that word is pointing toward.

I still carry questions that haven’t resolved into answers. How do I honor the faith that shaped me while staying open to the wisdom still unfolding. How do I become a bridge instead of another voice adding to the separation. What does it mean to fully claim my place as an artist within that conversation.

I don’t have the answers, but perhaps the only truth I can claim with certainty is this: when I create, I am already in conversation with the Divine.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Lately, I’ve been thinking about keystones. A keystone is the central stone in an arch. It’s not the largest stone, nor the strongest. In fact, if you looked at the structure casually, you might not even notice it. Yet without it, the arch collapses.

What fascinates me is that the keystone doesn’t remove tension. The arch exists because of tension. The keystone simply allows opposing forces to become part of a coherent whole.

For a while, I thought the lesson was about embodying the energy of a keystone. Now I’m certain, it’s about relational awareness. Or perhaps more accurately, it’s an energy that becomes visible when people come together in the right way.

Recently, I've been describing partners as co-creators. The idea that when two people meet, something becomes possible that neither could have accomplished alone. But lately I’ve been wondering if even that language misses something.

What if we’re not creating the keystone at all? What if we’re recognizing it?

What if certain relationships, collaborations, and conversations reveal a deeper architecture that was always there, waiting to be seen?

I’ve experienced this with people whose perspectives differ from my own. People with different backgrounds, beliefs, experiences, and strengths. On paper, we shouldn’t fit. And yet something extraordinary happens when neither person is trying to convince, fix, rescue, or change the other. A larger picture comes into view. Not because we become the same. But because we remain different.

The keystone doesn’t erase the stones on either side of the arch. It allows them to belong to the same structure. Perhaps that is what I’ve been trying to describe when I speak about WE.

Not the loss of individuality.
Not agreement.
Not sameness.

But the recognition that there are dimensions of reality we cannot access alone.

Some truths only become visible through relationship.
Some patterns only emerge through participation.
Some forms of coherence can only be recognized when different pieces of the puzzle find one another.

Maybe this is the invitation of the Keystone Era. To spend less time asking, “What can I build?” And more time asking: “What becomes visible when we come together?”

Because perhaps the most important thing we create isn’t something new at all.
Perhaps it’s our ability to recognize the hidden architecture that has been waiting between us all along.

length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

There is something I have learned over the years. The places that call to us are rarely random. They arrive when we are ready for them.

Japan has lived on my wish list for many years. To finally experience it alongside my husband and daughter, both seeing it for the first time as well, has felt like a gift. But as our journey begins to come to a close, I realize the greatest gift was not the temples, the food, the history, or even the beauty.

It was a feeling. A feeling I did not realize I had been longing for.

Living in the United States, we are surrounded by the energy of the individual. We celebrate independence, personal achievement, self-improvement, and self-expression. There is much beauty in that. Yet somewhere along the way, many of us have forgotten how to hold those qualities alongside something equally important.

The collective.

The we.

What struck me most about Japan was not any single landmark or experience. It was the awareness that seemed woven into everyday life. The understanding that one’s presence affects the people around them.

The streets of Tokyo are among the busiest in the world, yet they often feel remarkably peaceful. Trains are full, yet quiet. Public spaces are shared with a level of care that feels almost invisible until you experience it. There is a subtle but powerful understanding that we are not moving through the world alone.

We belong to one another. Sometimes we need to experience something different to remember what is possible.

What moved me was the understanding that the energy of “we” is not reserved for temples, shrines, or mountaintops. It can exist in the ordinary moments of everyday life. In how we walk through a city. In how we share public space. In how we care for the land beneath our feet.

The experience has left me reflecting on my own path.

Much of my work has always begun with the individual. Through SketchPoetic, through art, through healing, through self-discovery. We start by looking within. We learn to listen. We learn to feel. We learn to remember who we are.

Yet, the journey does not end there. The purpose of healing is not simply to become a more whole version of ourselves. It is to become a more conscious participant in the collective.

As I prepare to return home, I find myself carrying this question:

What would change if more of us considered not only how we move through the world, but how our presence shapes it?

Not from obligation.

Not from perfection.

But from love.

The greatest gift Japan has given me is not a memory. It is a remembrance. A remembrance that another way of being is possible. And that wherever we live, each of us has the opportunity to create a little more of that “we” in the spaces we touch, the communities we build, and the lives we share.

That feels like a journey worth bringing home.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Yesterday, a group of us sat in a circle holding a single rope. The mothers formed the outer ring. Our children at the center. One by one, each child was handed a pair of scissors and invited to cut it. We gathered to honor a moment that is easy to rush past, the crossing between one chapter of life and the next.

I created this ritual because I felt something I couldn’t name, a pull toward marking what was ending before the celebrations swallowed it whole. Before the photographs, the speeches, the plans. Before we moved on, which is what we always do, and do well.

We are extraordinarily good at next.

What we are less practiced in is the pause between what was and what is becoming. Most of the thresholds in our lives pass without ceremony.

We leave a job.
A relationship ends.
A chapter closes.

A version of ourselves quietly dissolves. And we step into what follows without ever standing still long enough to say: I see you. I honor what this was.

The crossing happens. We just aren’t usually present for it.

I have been thinking about this more as I grow older. Not in a morbid way, but in an alive way. The more I pay attention to the moments that change me, the more I understand that attention itself is a form of devotion.

Ceremony doesn’t make a moment more meaningful. It makes us more available to the meaning that’s already there.

This is true whether you are a mother or not. Whether your child is graduating or your own life is in the middle of some quiet rearrangement you haven’t yet named.

Life is constantly asking us to release one thing and trust another. The question is whether we let it move through us unseen, or whether we choose, for even a few minutes, to stand in the crossing and witness it.

Yesterday, a rope was cut.
But the rope was never the point.

The point was that we stopped. We stood still. We let the moment be what it was. And I wonder what might shift, in any of our lives, if we gave ourselves permission to do that more often.

Not to slow down productivity. Not to be precious about time.

But to say: this matters, and I am here for it.

It arrives with urgency. With vision. With the genuine desire to change something broken. And yet somewhere in the fixation on impact, on proving the worth of the mission, the very thing the work is trying to protect begins to erode.

I have been sitting with this pattern lately, watching it move through spaces devoted to healing, consciousness, community, and the Earth itself. And what I keep noticing is how easy it is to become the very system we claim to be dismantling when we are too focused on the destination to feel how we are traveling.

We cannot build something sacred by extracting from the people building it.

The language may sound different now. Collaboration. Shared vision. Alignment. Purpose. But underneath it, the pattern is often the same.

The artist gives. The visionary pours. The one carrying the soul of the work continues to carry it beyond what is sustainable because the mission matters deeply to them. Not because they are weak. Because they care.

When the work is sacred to you, you will give it everything. Even when no one asked you to. Even when the giving becomes invisible. Even when the dream quietly begins consuming the person dreaming it.

I have watched what happens when no one is holding the container around a visionary.

The ideas keep flowing. The connections keep forming. The energy moves outward in every direction because that is the nature of generative people. But eventually even the brightest fire begins to dim when there is no structure protecting the flame. Not because the vision disappeared. Because no one was tending to the visionary.

And lately, I have realized how transformative it is when someone finally says:

I have your back.

Not performatively.
Not publicly.
Not for recognition.

But through the quiet, practical, fiercely loving act of creating boundaries around what matters.

Saying:
Not on her time.
Not without support.
Not without acknowledging what this actually costs.

That kind of advocacy is not separate from healing work. It is healing work. Because the way we treat the people carrying the soul of a mission reveals whether we truly believe in the world we claim we are building.

If we are devoted to regeneration, then our relationships must regenerate too. If we are fighting for the Earth, for humanity, for consciousness, for healing, then we have to stop glorifying depletion in the people doing the carrying.

The most radical devotion to a mission is not endless sacrifice. It is refusing to let the mission become another machine that consumes the very people bringing it to life.

We are not separate from the Earth.
We are not separate from one another.
We are not separate from the work itself.

And that means the way we protect each other is never just personal.

It is sacred.
<div Not the kind that burns villages down. This fire feels ancient. Purposeful. Alive. The kind that, when harnessed, illuminates everything it touches.

I have been calling it rebellion, but even that word feels incomplete. Because this is not rebellion against life. It is rebellion against everything that ever taught me to abandon myself in order to belong within it.

I can feel it in the way I speak now. The way I no longer nod in agreement just to keep the peace. The way my body tightens when I watch systems continue feeding people the illusion that healing exists somewhere outside of themselves. The way I can no longer stay silent in rooms where performance is rewarded more than presence.

Something in me keeps whispering, not on my watch.

Not on my watch will I shrink truth into something more digestible. Not on my watch will I confuse exhaustion for worthiness. Not on my watch will I participate in narratives that keep people disconnected from their own power, their own intuition, their own enoughness.

And yet what surprises me most is that this fire does not feel angry. It feels clear. The clarity is what burns.

Because this rebellion did not arrive through force. It arrived through surrender. Through allowing people to support me. Through giving myself permission to receive. Through loosening my grip on control. Through letting my daughter go while trusting that love remains. Through facing money not as scarcity but as energy already on its way. Through recognizing that being present is enough.

This fire was born the moment I stopped trying to earn my existence.

What lives inside me now is a paradox I have stopped trying to resolve. It is “I am done with the narrative” while also saying “let’s tell a new story.” It is “don’t mess with me” beside “come do this together.” It is “no more repeating the patterns” alongside “I honor the lineage that brought me here.” It is fierce and tender existing in the same breath.

For so long I believed rebellion meant fighting something outside of myself. A system. A machine. An empire. A story someone else wrote about who I was supposed to be.

But what if the deepest rebellion is refusing separation itself?

What if this fire is not here to burn the world down, but to burn away every illusion that ever told us we were disconnected from one another in the first place?

Because underneath all of it, I keep arriving at the same truth. I am enough. You are enough. We were always enough simply by being.

This rebellion is not against anything. It is the fire burning apart everything that ever made us feel separate from the we.

And maybe that is exactly why it matters now.

<a this block will maintain its original spacing when published
This Mother’s Day, I have been thinking a lot about my mother. Not only as my mother, but as a mother witnessing me become one too. And in watching her with my daughter, I have started to understand something I could not fully see before. Somewhere along the way, she stopped mothering me only as her child.

She began mothering me as a woman.

It is different now. Softer in some ways. Wiser in others. Less about protection and more about presence. Less about telling me who to be and more about reminding me of who I already am. And perhaps what moves me most is watching how she still speaks to her own mother in prayer. How her mother remains a guide to her even now. A presence that still lives within her decisions, her rituals, her tenderness, her strength.

It made me realize that motherhood never really ends. It transforms.

Daughter becomes mother.
Mother becomes guide.
And somehow, even as women spend so much of their lives nurturing others, there remains a part of us that still longs to be held too.

It made me wonder about the women who mother everyone else.

The women whose own mothers are gone. The women who never became mothers in the traditional sense. The women quietly re-parenting themselves while raising others. The women carrying generations of emotional labor inside bodies that rarely get permission to rest. Who holds them?

Mother’s Day carries so many emotions inside it. Love. Gratitude. Grief. Longing. Absence. Celebration. Memory.

There are those celebrating motherhood, and those mourning it. Those who ache for mothers they have lost. Those estranged from them. Those who wished to become mothers and never did. Those trying to become the kind of mother they themselves may have needed. It reminds me how much motherhood extends beyond biology.

There are women who mother through presence. Through listening. Through witnessing. Through wisdom. Through creativity. Through the simple act of making another person feel safe enough to exist exactly as they are.

And perhaps that is why I have felt so drawn to Mother Earth lately too.

Nature mothers differently than we do. She nourishes, but she also sheds. She changes seasons without apology. She lets things die so new life can emerge. She does not cling to what no longer belongs. There is wisdom in that.

Maybe motherhood, in its deepest form, is not about constant sacrifice. Maybe it is about teaching others how to return to themselves. And maybe part of healing is realizing that we, too, deserve care. Not through dependency, but through remembrance.

Through rest.
Through softness.
Through boundaries.
Through community.
Through creativity.

Through the courage to finally hold ourselves with the tenderness we so freely offer everyone else.

We are witnessing more than motherhood. We are witnessing how love evolves.

How it softens.
How it deepens.
How it keeps finding new forms.

And perhaps that is what mothers have been teaching us all along.

For weeks, my body was speaking. Stop the coffee. Rest when the noise gets loud. Pay attention. She was not shouting. She was not dramatic about it. She was simply telling the truth, the way the body always does, quietly and without negotiation. And I kept answering back with the same familiar logic. I will be fine. I can manage this. It is only temporary.

That negotiation, I now recognize, was not strength. It was the old pattern returning in new clothes. Because I was not ignoring my body out of ignorance. I was ignoring her knowing exactly what she was saying. And that is an entirely different kind of reckoning.

I have spent years learning to listen. Through the sketch practice. Through the stillness. Through all the ways I have taught myself to come back to what is true beneath the surface. And somewhere in the urgency of building something meaningful, I overrode all of it. Purpose, I discovered, can perform just as loudly as anything else. The fixation on impact. The need to prove the worth of the work. The invisible audience we carry even when we believe we have put it down. It wears the language of devotion. But in the body, it feels like pressure.

The body does not care about our intentions. It only registers what we are actually holding.

Two weeks without a spasm now. The ease has returned. And what I understand differently this time is that I had been asking for this ease. In every meditation. In every mark on the page. In every quiet reaching toward alignment. And perhaps I needed to feel its absence so precisely that I would stop calling tension normal.

What this season has taught me is not that I failed to listen. It is that I have grown close enough to hear the whisper at all. In the past, it would not have registered. The fact that it does now is the evidence of every year of this practice.

The lesson I am sitting with is simpler than I expected. Knowing is not the same as honoring. And the distance between those two things is where we either soften or repeat.

My body does not have to scream to be telling the truth. She never did. I just needed to become someone who trusts that a whisper is enough.

I have a superpower I did not always know how to name. Pattern recognition. The ability to move through different worlds, art, science, business, community, and see what they share beneath the surface. What connects them. What they are quietly saying to each other across what we assume are very different languages.

I believe this is what artists and scientists have in common, though neither group tends to say it out loud. We are both, at our core, pattern seekers. We notice when something begins to repeat. We grow curious when a shape starts to form. We watch the one become two, and the two become many, and we ask: what is this trying to tell us?

Nature has always known this. The rising tide follows its pattern without apology. The bird sings the same call across centuries. The wind moving through a forest creates a rhythm that the body recognizes before the mind has a chance to name it. There is a mathematics to all of it, vibrational, cellular, ancient, and when we slow down enough to feel it, something in us wants to come into tune.

This is not metaphor. The golden ratio, the Fibonacci sequence, the fractal geometry of a coastline or a fern or the branching of your own veins, these are not decorations. They are the architecture of existence. The universe building itself according to a logic that predates every language we have invented to describe it. And artists have always felt this, even when we did not have the vocabulary for it. Every gesture made with a pen, every beat that finds its echo, every color that insists on being placed next to another. We are following a pattern that is already there, waiting to be seen.

For me, this shows up most honestly in my SketchPoetic practice. There is nothing happening on paper that isn’t already happening in my life. The marks I make, the shapes that insist on forming, the lines my hand follows before my mind has issued any instruction. These are not choices so much as recognitions. The pen finds the pattern. And in following it, I find something true about where I am.

This is the surrender I have learned to trust. Not because it is always comfortable, but because it is always honest. When I stop trying to manufacture what the page should look like and instead allow what wants to emerge, something shifts. I become less rigid. More curious. More willing to be in the presence of what is actually arising rather than what I had planned.

This is what pattern recognition gives us, whether we are artists or scientists or simply people paying attention. When we learn to see patterns, we stop fighting what is. We begin to understand what holds us and what is asking to evolve. We see how our relationships form and why. We notice the repetitions in our own thinking, the rhythms in our own becoming. We understand, at a cellular level, that we were born into pattern. The womb is a place of sacred geometry. And the body’s departure from this world is equally precise, equally patterned, equally part of a larger design.

We are not here to be defined by our patterns. We are here to recognize them. To ask which ones are holding us in place and which ones are asking to carry us forward. Because in that question lives real freedom. Not freedom from nature, but freedom within it.

The artist and the scientist both know this. And perhaps the greatest pattern of all is the one that keeps reminding us: we are far more alike than we have been willing to see.
<div Not a practice to perfect, but a place to return. A quiet, consistent meeting with myself. Day after day. Breath after breath. Mark after mark.

3,285 days of showing up. Not always with clarity. Not always with ease. But with a willingness to feel what was there. To let the page hold what words could not. To trust that even the smallest line carried something alive within it.

What began as sketching became listening. What began as expression became release. What began as a solitary act became a language. A way of remembering that nothing inside of us is ever asking to be fixed. Only given space to move.

There were days the lines were soft and open. There were days they were tight, fractured, barely willing to emerge. And still, they belonged. All of it belonged. The joy, the grief, the confusion, the becoming. The page never asked me to be anything other than honest.

Over 10,000 hours of meeting myself in this way. And what I have come to understand is this. Healing is not a destination we arrive to. It is a relationship we build. A devotion to staying close to our own inner world, even when it feels unfamiliar.

SketchPoetic was never about creating something beautiful. It was about revealing what is true. And in that truth, something beautiful inevitably emerges.

Nine years later, the practice continues. Not as something I do, but as something I live. A rhythm. A return. A remembering.

If you have ever felt the quiet pull to express something you cannot name, this is your invitation. You do not need to know how. You only need to begin.

One mark at a time.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Rings of seasons. Drought and abundance. Pressure and patience. Nothing rushed, nothing forced. Every line earned.

When I look at this hand, imagined in wood, I feel the resonance with my own practice. SketchPoetic has always been about listening beneath the surface, allowing what is already there to reveal itself. Wood does the same. It does not hide its history. It becomes more itself through carving, not less.

To carve into wood is not to impose, but to uncover. To follow the grain. To work with what wants to emerge.

This hand feels like a meeting place between the human and the elemental. Between what we hold and what has held us. There is something ancient here. Something patient. Something that knows how to transform pressure into pattern.

I find myself wondering what it would mean to bring these sketches into material like this. To let them live not only on paper or skin, but in something that has already lived a life of its own.

Because this doesn’t feel like an idea.

It feels like a remembering waiting to length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

There is a version of growth we are often taught to recognize. It is bright, forward moving, and full of possibility. It sounds like excitement and looks like progress. It is easy to celebrate because it feels like something is being gained, as if life is opening in a way we can clearly point to and name. This is the version of expansion we share, the one that fits neatly into language and milestones, the one that reassures us we are moving in the right direction.

But there is another version that moves much more quietly, one that does not announce itself in visible change or external validation. It arrives in pauses, in subtle sensations, in moments where something familiar begins to loosen its grip even when nothing appears to be wrong. It can feel disorienting at first, not because it is chaotic, but because it does not follow the narrative we have been taught about what growth should feel like. This is the grief that lives inside expansion. Not because something has gone wrong, but because something is changing.

It feels fitting to sit with this on Easter, a day most often associated with renewal, rebirth, and rising. We speak of resurrection as a moment of triumph, of emergence, of light returning after darkness. But what is less often acknowledged is what makes that rising possible in the first place. There is a surrender that precedes it, a letting go that cannot be bypassed, a quiet and often invisible unraveling where something must be released before something new can take form. We are taught to celebrate the resurrection, but not always how to be with the undoing that comes before it.

And yet, this is where so much of our lives are actually lived. Not in the arrival, but in the threshold. Not in the clarity, but in the in between. It is the space where a version of ourselves we have known intimately begins to shift, where something we have carried, identified with, or relied on no longer fits in quite the same way. There is nothing broken here, nothing to fix, and still there is an ache. The kind of ache that does not demand attention, but asks for presence.

The body understands this in ways the mind often cannot articulate. It does not separate these experiences into categories of joy or grief, expansion or contraction. It feels the totality of the moment all at once. The holding and the releasing. The love and the letting go. The becoming and the quiet ending that makes that becoming possible. There is an intelligence in allowing this to exist without rushing to resolve it, without needing to define it too quickly, without trying to move past it in order to arrive somewhere more comfortable.

Because not all grief comes from loss as we have been taught to define it. Some grief arrives at the threshold of becoming. It is present when we outgrow a version of ourselves, when a role begins to shift, when something we have held closely begins to move beyond us. Even when it is right. Even when it is beautiful. Even when we would not choose otherwise. There is still something that needs to be honored in the releasing.

This kind of grief does not ask us to collapse or retreat. It asks us to stay. To remain present in the tension of what is both ending and emerging at the same time. To allow expansion and contraction, gratitude and ache, movement and stillness to coexist without forcing them into opposition. Not as contradictions, but as companions. Not as something to resolve, but as something to witness.

Perhaps this is what renewal actually asks of us. Not just to rise, but to release. Not just to begin again, but to honor what is ending, even if it is subtle, even if no one else can see it. To recognize that something does not have to be broken for it to be leaving, and that leaving, in its own way, is an act of love.

There is nothing to fix here. Only something to feel. Only something to notice as it moves through, quietly, gently, in its own time.

There is a pain I have been living with these past few weeks that, at first, felt like something was truly wrong. The kind of pain that stops you mid breath. The kind that makes you wonder if your heart is trying to tell you something urgent, something you cannot ignore. It arrived suddenly. Tightness in my chest. A burning that spread in waves. Moments that mimicked what I imagine a heart attack might feel like. There was fear at first. A quiet but steady concern that something deeper was happening beneath the surface.

After seeing doctors and listening more closely, I learned it was esophageal spasms. A condition connected to acid reflux and heartburn. Not life threatening, but deeply uncomfortable. A contraction. Sudden. Involuntary. A gripping that asks you to pause, to breathe, to soften. A condition that does not respond to force, but to awareness. There are practical shifts, of course. Eating more slowly. Choosing foods with care. Letting go of coffee, of acidity, of excess. Smaller meals. Gentler rhythms. All of it an invitation to move through the world with a different kind of attention.

But what revealed itself was not only physical. It was relational. Emotional. Quietly unfolding beneath my awareness until I was willing to feel it. I began to notice a pattern. The spasms would come, and more often than not, my daughter was near. Sitting beside me. In the same room. Within reach. At first it felt like coincidence. But the body does not speak in coincidence. It speaks in pattern. In timing. In truth we have not yet named.

My daughter just turned eighteen. She has chosen her college. The long season of applications, decisions, and uncertainty has come to a close. There is relief in that. A sense of completion after a process that asked so much of both of us. And yet, underneath that relief, there is something else. Grief does not always arrive as tears. Sometimes it arrives as a tightening. A holding. A quiet refusal to release what has been known for so long.

For eighteen years, my body has known what it means to care for her. To attune. To anticipate. To hold her in a field of constant awareness. My love has not just lived in my heart. It has lived in my nervous system. In my breath. In the way my body has organized itself around her presence in my life. And now, something is changing. Consciously, I understand this moment. I want this for her. I want her to explore, to expand, to find her own rhythm in the world. I trust her. I trust the path that is opening before her.

But the body does not always move at the speed of the mind. A spasm is, in many ways, a perfect reflection of this moment. A sudden contraction. An involuntary holding. A resistance that happens beneath choice. It is the body gripping onto something it is not yet ready to release, even as another part of me knows it is time. There is a kind of heartbreak in this transition. Not because something is wrong, but because something is ending in the form that I have known it. The closeness. The immediacy. The everyday presence of her within my reach.

My heart is not breaking. It is stretching. It is learning a new shape. There are moments where fear tries to enter. Thoughts about the world, about all the ways it can be unpredictable or unsafe. The instinct to protect does not disappear overnight. It lives deep within a mother’s body. But alongside that fear, there is something else that feels just as true. The world is not only a place of danger. It is also a place of beauty. Of connection. Of unexpected kindness. Of people she has not yet met who will become part of her story. Of experiences that will shape her in ways I could never orchestrate for her.

I am learning that letting go is not an absence of love. It is an evolution of it. It is love that no longer holds tightly, but stands beside. Love that trusts. Love that breathes. And perhaps this is what my body has been asking of me all along. Not to fight the contraction, but to listen to it. To soften around it. To allow the wave to move through rather than brace against it. To feel the grief fully, without needing to fix it.

To let my heart ache, not as a sign of something wrong, but as evidence of something deeply, profoundly right. Because to love this much is to feel it when things change. And to release her into her life is not the end of our connection. It is the beginning of a new way of holding each other.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
