My heart sank before my brain could even catch up with what I was seeing.

I turned and ran, tears threatening to fall.

What was I thinking? Dating a twenty-two-year-old man?

“Fuck. Princess!”

Damon's voice echoed through the empty hallway as he called after me, leaving the girl behind.

He didn't run after me.

He just walked.

Yet somehow, he was catching up to me.

I felt a hand grab my wrist.

“Where are you going?”

“Really?”

I pulled my wrist away.

“Never mind. Leave me the fuck alone.”

“You know I love you, princess.”

His grip tightened slightly.

“I wanna go. Leave me.”

A tear slipped down my cheek.

“Come with me.”

Before I could argue, he led me toward his car.

His black Range Rover sat beneath the campus lights, looking almost as intimidating as he did.

We both got into the back seat, and he locked the doors.

“I wanna go to—”

“You're coming home with me,” he interrupted.

I stared at him.

“I know what you saw, and it's not what you think, princess.”

“Gia,” I said, turning toward the window.

“Princess.”

“Who's she?”

“You think something happened between us?”

I hated the way he could see right through me.

I stayed quiet, refusing to answer.

“She’s someone from my past. That's all you need to know right now.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“Gia, what do you need to know?”

His voice rose.

He'd called me by my name.

Not princess.

Tears filled my eyes.

For a moment, he looked different.

“Fuck,” he muttered to himself.

Then his expression softened.

“Princess…”

He reached toward me but stopped, giving me space.

“There’s something about you. Maybe it's the glint in your eyes, but what I love most is the way your eyes light up when you smile.”

He paused.

“It warms my heart, the way you do it. I want you to know how much I care about you.”

His voice was quieter now.

“If you ever need me for anything, you let me know.”

He looked directly into my eyes.

“And I promise I'll be there for you. Even if it’s not necessarily safe.”

A slow grin tugged at the corner of his lips when he said the last word.

I swallowed, suddenly feeling nervous about what exactly he meant.

I swallowed.

I needed that closure.

“She’s my past, Gia. Nothing more.”

He reached for my hand, his thumb brushing gently against my knuckles.

“You don't have to worry about her.”

I looked into his eyes, trying to decide whether I believed him.

“Then why didn't you tell me about her?”

He hesitated.

Just for a second.

“Because I didn't think she mattered anymore.”

I nodded slowly.

Maybe I believed him.

Maybe I just wanted to.

Damon pulled me closer and kissed my forehead.

“It’s you, princess.”

For the first time that evening, I finally felt like I could breathe again.

Neither of us noticed the figure standing across the parking lot, watching us drive away.

His ex.

She lowered her phone after sending one final message.

We need to talk.

After what had happened only a few hours ago, I couldn't sleep.

Why did everything keep replaying in my head over and over again?

Every little moment.

Every feeling.

Every thought I wished I could shut off.

Eventually, I drifted off.

My alarm rang loudly the next morning.

“Fuck. For Christ's sake.”

I reached for my phone and checked my schedule for the day before opening my messages.

I looked for Damon's name.

Nothing.

He hadn't texted me.

That was strange.

He always did.

Good morning, princess.

I love you.

I miss you already.

Usually, my phone would be filled with his messages before I even got out of bed.

I couldn't help but giggle at the thought.

Damon was… ridiculously attractive.

His naturally long, jet-black hair. His strong, masculine build. The confidence in his presence. And those neck tattoos I secretly loved touching.

I caught myself staring at his picture for a little too long.

I blinked.

I got ready for class and headed out.

I still hadn't made any friends.

It was basically just Damon, unfortunately. 😭

I'd seen him around campus with his friends a few times, and, if I was being honest, I sometimes got jealous.

Which made absolutely no sense.

Damon wasn't my boyfriend.

Not officially, anyway.

He hadn't actually asked me out, and we hadn't defined whatever this thing between us was.

Sometimes I wondered if I was too young for him.

He was twenty-two, after all. He hung out with people his age, people who seemed so much more… adult.

And here I was, still trying to figure myself out.

I rested my head against the table, exhausted from my own thoughts.

Then I felt someone sit beside me.

A hand settled gently on my waist.

I lifted my head.

“Hey, princess.”

Damon.

For some reason, seeing him made me feel both calm and anxious at the same time.

“How was your night?”

“Why didn't you text me this morning?” I asked.

He sighed.

“I dropped my phone in water. But you know I would have, princess.”

He leaned closer and gently nibbled my ear.

“Yeah, sure.”

I eyed him suspiciously.

“I saw you talking to your girlfriends.”

The jealousy was written all over my face, and Damon could see right through me.

“Oh, my princess.”

He smiled.

His fingers brushed against my neck, lingering over the spot from the night before.

Then he looked directly into my eyes.

“I love you.”

And before I could process what he'd just said, he kissed me.

That was the first time he'd ever said those words to me.

My heart raced.

I wanted the kiss to last longer, but he pulled away and pressed a gentle kiss against my forehead, then ran his hand through my neatly combed hair, deliberately messing it up.

Ugh.

Classes were finally over.

I was making my way across campus, already thinking about getting back to my dorm and collapsing onto my bed, when a familiar figure caught my attention.

I slowed down.

Wait.

I knew that walk.

Damon.

I smiled slightly and started walking toward him, but before I could call his name, he disappeared into one of the empty classrooms.

I frowned.

Why was he going into a classroom at this hour?

Curiosity got the better of me.

I followed.

A few moments later, the classroom door opened.

Damon stepped out.

He looked… dishevelled.

His shirt was slightly untucked, and he was adjusting his collar as he glanced down the hallway.

I stopped.

Then a girl stepped out behind him.

She ran her fingers through her hair, smoothing it down before looking at Damon with a small smile.

My smile disappeared.

Damon looked up.

The moment his eyes met mine, he froze.

For a few seconds, none of us said anything.

I looked at him.

Then at her.

Then back at him.

What the fuck?

Where the fuck is he?

I was wandering through the dimly lit hallway when I suddenly bumped my head against something that was both hard and… strangely soft.

Oh no.

I realized it was a person.

Was I caught?

“Hey, princess.”

It was Damon.

I could recognize that voice anywhere—unfortunately. His low, deep voice was quite the turn-on, and I hated that I noticed.

“Missed me?”

He lifted my chin so I could look at him.

I couldn’t even hold his gaze, and judging by the smirk on his face, I was pretty sure he knew it.

“No! Why’d you call me out here? It’s late, and we could get caught, you asshole.”

“I thought you said we should get to know each other. This is a good time, right?”

He said it with that irritating little smirk.

“No, you dumbass!”

I was genuinely pissed, and the cold night air certainly wasn’t helping my mood.

“You’re probably confused about the whole situation. 😂 But let me explain a little.”

I’m Gia. I’m eighteen, freshly into university, and currently talking to my hopefully-soon-to-be boyfriend, Damon, who is in his third year and already in his twenties.

I stared at the messages for a moment.

Then I tossed my phone onto the bed.

Gosh.

I needed time to process what the hell had just happened.

I walked into the bathroom to freshen up, still trying to make sense of the strange mixture of nervousness, curiosity, and excitement swirling inside me.

Maybe university was going to be a lot more interesting than I expected.
