That changed on Wednesday as buyers reclaimed the area and triggered a strong rally. Today, that same late-August support held once again, confirming the reclaim and leading to another strong short-covering rally.

Today’s strength also left behind two ZPNs (Zero Print Nodes), which will be noted and carried forward as important references to monitor on a future revisit.

The market has now gone from a sharp downside sweep to reclaiming a key level that previously failed. The focus moving forward is whether buyers can continue defending this reclaimed support and build on the strength, or if sellers can regain control and push price back below.

Also, keep in mind that the market will be closed Monday for Labor Day, giving us a long holiday weekend. Regular trading will resume Tuesday.

We are now approaching a make-or-break area. The same levels that acted as support toward the end of August are being tested again, but this time from below. If prior support flips to resistance and sellers begin defending this area, it would keep the recent breakdown intact and open the door for another move lower.

On the other hand, if buyers can continue the current strength and reclaim these prior support levels, the recent breakdown begins to lose significance and the rally can continue.

The focus now is simple: does prior support become resistance, or do buyers reclaim it and continue pushing higher?

With several regular trading hours and overnight lows clustered closely together, a break below the first level triggered stops, which then pushed price through the next set of lows and created a chain reaction of selling.

The picture below shows this structure clearly. I wouldn’t necessarily consider the firecracker effect a “playbook” or something to actively look for as a trade setup. It is more about remaining aware of the structure and being cautious when multiple stops are closely clustered together. If one level breaks, the reaction can quickly accelerate through the others. As traders, it is important to always remain aware of where these situations can develop.

That move has now pushed ES below the prior all-time highs from early June, while sellers also successfully defended our short-term area of interest. This keeps sellers in control for now, with 7670 becoming the key short-term level. As long as price continues to hold below it, sellers remain in control.

With the firecracker effect now triggered and ES trading below prior all-time highs, the focus shifts to whether sellers can build on today’s weakness or buyers begin reclaiming key levels.

That weakness has carried into the Sunday open, with ES now retesting the prior all-time highs from early June. This remains the key higher timeframe area of interest. The question heading into Monday is whether buyers continue to defend prior resistance as support, or sellers finally gain acceptance below and begin shifting the higher timeframe structure.

With the August 17 poor high now repaired, attention shifts to the unfinished structure below. The poor low from August 26, along with the weak low of the day, have both been noted and will become important references if the current weakness continues.

When the initial balance is this large, the market will often spend the remainder of the session trading within those extremes rather than expanding further. That is exactly what we saw today, with price remaining within the initial balance for the rest of the session after the early move.
