in common is an understanding of what matters to people, why it matters, and when it matters. It’s a genuine strategic asset. Not something that sits alongside the business. The business itself.

B2C founders have always known this, even when they didn’t have the language for it. The ones who built lasting brands were the ones who stayed close to culture, who understood what mattered to their customers, and built accordingly. The product was the expression of that understanding.

What is new, though, is that capital is developing both the language and the appetite for it. Investors are getting more sophisticated about cultural equity as a real input into valuation.

The definition of what makes a business investable is expanding. Increasingly, that includes the cultural assets that shape long-term value:

Audience can be distribution.

Community can create loyalty.

Brand can become a competitive advantage.

The question of whether a brand has genuine cultural resonance, and whether it means something to the right people at the right moment, is entering the conversation earlier and more seriously than it used to.

For founders with strong cultural intelligence, that is significant. The way you’ve been building is becoming something the market is starting to value.

For investors, the question isn’t whether culture matters. It’s how you learn to recognise its value. The firms developing genuine cultural intelligence alongside financial analysis are the ones most likely to recognise opportunities before everyone else does.
<div say editorial here, I’m not just referring to content, I’m referring to selection. What a brand chooses to show, what it repeats, what it aligns itself with, and what it chooses not to show.

That layer isn’t always obvious, but it’s where a lot of the control sits. Over time, it shapes how a brand is understood, not because it says more, but because it decides more carefully.

You can feel the difference when a brand is operating this way, because things feel considered. Nothing feels random or reactive. Even as it evolves, there’s a sense that someone is paying attention to how it all fits together.

It stops feeling like communication, and starts to feel more like authorship.

Share The Art of Capital

Apple and the Discipline Behind It

Apple is one of the clearest examples of this in practice.

Not because it does more than other companies, but because it does less, and chooses carefully. Product launches are tightly framed, the language is controlled, and the ecosystem feels curated rather than expanded for the sake of it.

Even as the company grows and moves into new areas, there’s a sense of continuity. New decisions still feel connected to the same underlying logic.

It doesn’t feel like Apple is reacting to what’s happening around it. It feels like it’s making its own decisions about what’s worth focusing on, and then following through on that consistently.

That kind of discipline is hard to replicate, because it means knowing what to do, and what to leave out.

How Luxury Shapes What Matters

You see a similar pattern in luxury, although it shows up differently.

Loewe is a good example, it plays a more deliberate role in how culture is shaped. Through its focus on craft, the Loewe Foundation, collaborations, and the way collections are framed. There’s a clear sense of a point of view that extends beyond product.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Photography by Jack Pierson.

What’s interesting is that it’s not always loud. It’s not about constant visibility. It’s about how things are selected and placed, and how that builds over time.

It then becomes something people attach meaning to.

And meaning tends to last longer than attention, because it’s built through a series of decisions that connect, rather than individual moments that perform well.

Why This Matters Now

This becomes more important as everything speeds up.

AI, new platforms, and digital tools have made it much easier to produce, distribute, and experiment. But they’ve also levelled the playing field. When everyone has access to the same capabilities, doing more doesn’t necessarily create an advantage.

What starts to stand out instead is judgement. Not just how quickly something can be launched, but whether it should exist at all, and how it fits into a broader picture over time.

That’s where editorial thinking starts to move beyond a creative role and into something more strategic.

Because it shapes what gets built, what gets shown, and how a brand is ultimately understood.

The brands that shape what comes next won’t just be the ones moving fastest or scaling most efficiently. They’ll be the ones that are more deliberate about what they choose to do, and what they choose not to do.

That’s not really a marketing decision, it’s an editorial one, and editorial isn’t just a creative layer, it’s a form of authorship.

And authorship, increasingly, is what determines whether a brand is simply present, or actually shaping what people pay attention to in the first place.

If you’re building in this space across brand, commerce, technology, or capital, let’s connect! I’d be interested to hear how you’re thinking about this.

Simone

LinkedIn Instagram

Thanks for reading The Art of Capital! However, across luxury, beauty, fashion, and commerce more broadly, we’re seeing brands with enormous awareness struggle to sustain value, while others with quieter profiles continue to build trust and loyalty over time.

Visibility still matters. In many cases, it accelerates momentum, but momentum needs something solid behind it.

Part of this comes down to the environment brands are operating in now:

Markets move faster

Attention is fragmented

Consumers are more informed and selective

Growth remains possible, but it’s more complex and less forgiving of inconsistency. In that context, brand equity behaves less like a halo effect and more like a system.

This is where the definition needs updating.

Stay Close to the Ideas

A Modern Definition

Today, brand equity is built through a combination of decisions. It lives in how a brand behaves, how clearly it understands who it’s building for, and how consistently it earns trust.

In other words, modern brand equity is the value that compounds when clarity, behaviour, and trust are supported by systems designed to hold over time.

This shift changes how brands should think about growth. Equity isn’t something measured after visibility has been achieved. It’s something you design into the way a brand operates from the very beginning.

When that foundation is strong, momentum follows.

<a brand equity was primarily understood through visibility and perception. Awareness, recall, premium positioning. This was the standard recipe that signalled market strength.

When a brand was consistently present across media, culturally recognised, and clearly differentiated, equity accumulated almost as a byproduct of scale. Distribution widened, marketing reinforced familiarity, and consumers were willing to pay a premium, because recognition translated into confidence.

That model made sense in a time when being visible in the right places was often enough. If a brand showed up consistently, secured strong distribution, and maintained a clear point of view, equity tended to follow.

Scale itself carried authority. The more people saw you, the more established you felt, and in many ways, the structure of the market supported that logic.

The Decisions That Shape Equity

Today, equity shows up less in how a brand looks and more in how it moves.

You can see it in the choices brands make when things become uncertain

In whether pricing genuinely reflects long-term positioning

In how new products actually form part of a coherent story

In how consistent the experience feels across every touchpoint

Often, it’s the smallest shifts that carry the most weight: a launch that feels slightly rushed, a discount that signals something different than intended, or a change in tone that quietly alters how the brand is perceived.

Consumers may not always articulate what feels off, but they register it, and over time, those signals begin to add up.

That’s why equity now lives in behaviour. It’s shaped through the everyday decisions that define how a brand operates, which is arguably more important than isolated moments of visibility.

Stay Close to the Ideas

Where Time Does the Real Work

One of the shifts that feels most important right now is the role of time.

Equity doesn’t build in moments, its built from patterns in behaviour; the repetition of decisions that feel aligned, and the consistency between what a brand says and how it behaves over months and years.

Modern markets move quickly, and there’s constant pressure to accelerate, respond, and optimise. Yet equity tends to respond better to alignment over speed. If I’m honest, time remains one of the most powerful strategic assets a brand has.

When a brand is clear on who it is, how it operates, and who it’s building for, time begins to structure that clarity. It deepens trust, and reinforces recognition in a way that feels natural to a consumer.

Consumers are more informed and more intuitive than they’re often given credit for. They notice shifts in tone, pricing, product direction, and pace.

Moving with purpose and intention, while staying responsive to market conditions, builds a kind of stability that naturally compounds.

Over time, that stability becomes equity.

When Cultural Authority Meets Market Reality

Recent conversations around Pat McGrath Labs offers an interesting lens on this shift.

Few individuals have shaped modern beauty the way Pat McGrath has. Her artistry redefined how makeup is seen, worn, and talked about. The brand built around her name carries a level of cultural weight that can’t be easily replicated.

Pat McGrath Labs’ authority was built on mystique, influence, and creative excellence, where makeup was positioned as art.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" about decline or miscalculation. When you zoom out, it becomes clear that it’s about alignment, and sometimes moments like this can create the space to rebuild on stronger foundations, particularly in industries that move as quickly as beauty does.

In today’s market, mystique alone doesn’t carry the same weight as it once did. Equity needs clarity and structure, both creatively and commercially.

What Really Builds Over Time

Brand equity, redefined, is cumulative.

It reflects the decisions a brand makes consistently, how clearly it understands itself and the people it’s building for, how thoughtfully it expands, and how well its commercial choices support its positioning.

When growth, capital, and technology move in alignment with that clarity, something more durable begins to form. Over time, that alignment builds something steadier: the kind of credibility and trust that supports real long-term value.

In a market that moves quickly, equity tends to favour brands that are clear on what they’re building, who they’re building for, and why.

Share The Art of Capital

Where This Leaves Us

Brand equity has always mattered, what’s changed is how it behaves.

It’s no longer built through visibility alone. It’s shaped in the everyday decisions that define how a brand moves, expands, prices, communicates, and grows.

In many ways, this is good news, it means equity is no longer reserved for the loudest or the most visible. It belongs to brands that are clear, considered, and disciplined in how they build.

And in a market that feels faster and more intelligent every year, this kind of clarity is fundamental.

This is the lens I’ll continue exploring here: how equity is built, protected, and strengthened in a world shaped by culture, capital, and technology.

If you’re building in this space, across brand, commerce, technology, or capital, let’s connect! Luxury Summit, where L’Oréal introduced Beauty Genius. A tool designed as an AI-powered virtual beauty assistant providing personalised beauty advice and recommendations to consumers. Beauty Genius leverages generative AI, augmented reality and colour science to analyse skin, hair and beauty needs; learning what a customer wants to look like, but also how they want to feel.

These aren’t just features, they’re signals. Signals that emotional precision is quickly becoming the next layer of competitive advantage, especially in luxury and commerce.

Emotional Precision, Powered by AI

Tools like Daydream and Beauty Genius are already reshaping how personalisation shows up in people’s lives. But the real edge, and what defines this next chapter, is understanding not just what someone wants, but why.

Desire has emotional roots. And the smartest brands are digging deeper.

The most thoughtful innovations feel almost effortless. They move in the background, learn in real time, and respond with emotional precision. That’s when technology starts to earn trust, when it helps people feel genuinely understood.

The brands leading this space are designing with cultural intelligence and emotional fluency, making AI not just useful, but meaningful.

Because the brands that win won’t be the ones that simply deploy AI the fastest. They’ll be the ones who build with cultural sensitivity, emotional insight, and creative intentionality.

That’s how technology earns trust. That’s how personalisation becomes power.

Where We Go From Here

We’re in a pivotal moment: where the lines between data, design, and desire are dissolving.

The future of personalisation won’t be defined by better targeting, but by deeper understanding, and will belong to the brands who know how to listen, anticipate, and design from emotional intelligence.

It’s not about technology that works. It’s about technology that feels.

And that’s where brand strategy becomes essential. In the second, we decoded the shifting identity of the high-net-worth buyer, and why emotional tension is the new KPI.

Now, in my third piece, we’re going deeper into the mechanics of desire itself:

How scarcity becomes emotional strategy.

How exclusivity is engineered, not accidental.

And how community is fast becoming a brand’s most powerful conversion channel.

What the Smartest Brands Already Know About Desire

If there’s one thing luxury brands have always excelled at, it’s creating want.

The best luxury brands know desire doesn’t live in the product, it lives in the psychology around it.

Luxury has never just been about what’s sold, but how it’s positioned, who gets access, and what that access means. Today, desire isn’t a byproduct, it’s a strategy. Built through scarcity, shaped by story, and sustained by cultural alignment.

But as prestige evolves, so does the psychology around it. Consumers no longer respond to status the way they once did. Price doesn’t guarantee power. Access doesn’t guarantee belonging. The signals have changed, and so has the meaning behind them.

We’re seeing a new model emerge, one where desire is intentionally designed.

This isn’t demand, it’s engineered desire. Built through tension and sustained through alignment.

Measured not in clicks, but in cultural capital.

And the smartest brands in the market aren’t just watching it happen, they’re choreographing it.

Thanks for reading The Art of Capital! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and be part of the community shaping what’s next in the industry.

It’s Not Just Limited, It’s Designed That Way

Scarcity isn’t new. But today, scarcity isn’t about broad exclusion, it’s about emotional precision.

It’s less about you can’t have it, and more about this wasn’t meant for everyone. A form of positioning that appeals to the aspirational self.

We see this not only in product strategy, but in cultural moments, from exclusive brand dinners, to global stages like the Met Gala and the Cannes red carpet. Then there’s the rise of curated intimacy: Vogue Weddings, Sofia Richie-style lifestyle coverage, and behind-the-scenes luxury content designed for private or limited release.

These aren’t just appearances. They’re deliberate displays of who someone is, and how, where, and why they want to be seen.

Because increasingly, strategic visibility is becoming a core part of a brand’s playbook. It’s not about being hidden, it’s about being seen in the right way, in the right places, by the right audience.

The smartest brands understand this tension:

They use scarcity to build narrative power, not just hype.

They create friction between access and identity.

They don’t just drop products or services, they create belonging.

And in a world where visibility is constant, it’s not about disappearing. It’s about showing up in a way that signals who you are, and why you belong.

Community Is the New Aspiration: From Storytelling to Belonging

The model has shifted. It’s no longer enough to tell a story, a brand has to tell one the buyer feels a part of.

Modern luxury buyers don’t just want to be seen. They want to feel:

Understood

Reflected

Aligned

They’re looking for brands that speak their language, not just their lifestyle.

This is where storytelling evolves into something deeper: emotional community.

The brands leading this shift aren’t relying on CRM to manufacture loyalty. They’re building emotional infrastructure, through cultural fluency, shared values, and stories that mirror identity, not just heritage.

When storytelling becomes personal, when it makes the buyer feel something, that’s when it moves beyond a moment and becomes true brand loyalty - that’s when community begins to form.

The smartest brands are bringing buyers into the story, not just selling it to them.

This is how brands moves from one-time aspiration to lifelong alignment, a shift that translates across different industries, too.

Not through products, but through identity.

Not through reach, but through relevance.

Not through performance, but through emotion.

And the question is no longer: who do we want to sell to? But: who do we want to build with?

That might look like:

A members-only space where clients preview drops and co-create meaning around collections.

Small, invite-only events, not to push product, but to host conversation.

Digital communities where the more you engage and connect, the more access you unlock, not just based on spend.

In this model, community becomes the reward. Not everyone gets in, but those who do, feel something bigger than the product.

They feel chosen. And they stay.

A Quick Note on Where This Is Going

This series is building towards something. Each chapter is a layer in the new playbook I’m building, not just about how the industry feels, but how it’s designed.

From emotional tension to cultural storytelling, status engineering to community architecture, this is just the beginning!

In the coming chapters, we’ll explore loyalty, AI-powered personalisation, brand intimacy, and the emotional infrastructure behind long-term consumer alignment.

If you’re a founder, strategist, investor, or creative reshaping the future of the industry, this space is for you. Not just as a reader, but as part of a network of builders and thinkers shaping what comes next.

Let’s stay connected across platforms, as the conversation continues LinkedIn Instagram.

Let’s redefine what luxury means, and build what’s next, together.

Simone, The Art of Capital

Inside the Mind of Today’s Luxury Buyer; What High-Net-Worth Consumers Really Want, and Why Brands Must Rethink Their Approach

The next generation of HNW consumers are rewriting what it means to connect, convert, and belong in the world of luxury. Truth is, most of them don’t. I’ve seen just how easily brands mistake data for depth. But in reality? They know what their customer has bought, not what they believe.

My POV? The Shift is Here

Today, that disconnect is costing more than market share. It’s impacting emotional equity. New generations of high-net-worth buyers are emerging; they’re younger, digitally fluent, globally mobile, and identity-driven. They’re not just reshaping what luxury looks like, they’re reshaping how it’s experienced, valued, and sustained.

The next-gen buyer isn’t just redefining demand. They’re redefining how prestige is created, accessed, and sustained.

What Luxury Still Gets Wrong About the HNW Buyer

CRM systems were built to optimize sales, not emotional signals. Campaigns are designed to perform, not to connect.

We’ve taught brands to build infrastructure around transactions, not transformation. But identity-led consumers demand more.

Luxury today isn’t just about price. It’s about perception, alignment, and emotional fluency. The new HNW buyer isn’t seeking visibility. They’re seeking resonance.

And that’s where emotional tension comes in.

Emotional Tension: The Invisible KPI

At the centre of this shift, is something I love to speak about: emotional tension.

Emotional tension is the silent negotiation that shapes every luxury purchase.

It’s the internal push-pull between what the buyer desires, and what they’re willing to offer (emotionally, socially, symbolically) to access it.

It shows up as:

Wanting to be seen, but only by the right people

Wanting cultural alignment, but rejecting mass validation

Wanting intimacy with a brand, but resisting overexposure

In a market defined by emotional capital, tension isn’t just a feeling, it’s a signal.

A signal of who’s aspirational, who’s converting, and who’s quietly slipping away.

In modern luxury, emotional tension isn’t optional; it’s the KPI that informs strategic engagement.

Thanks for reading The Art of Capital! Two Emotional Worlds

These personas are examples based on emerging consumer patterns, not rigid profiles. Every luxury buyer brings their own individuality, but emotional drivers can reveal important signals across generations.

Persona #1

The Gen Z HNW Buyer

Age: 22-27

Profile: Digital-native, entrepreneurial or inheritor of new wealth, globally mobile

Emotional Drivers:

Identity exploration

Taste credibility and subtle exclusivity

Private, intimate luxury over mass-market visibility

What They Reject:

Generic personalization

Super loud branding

One-size-fits-all exclusivity

Emotional Truth:

They don’t want to be profiled. They want to be mirrored.

Persona #2

The Established HNW Buyer

Age: 35-55

Profile: Corporate leaders, legacy wealth, global presence

Emotional Drivers:

Discretion and precision

Loyalty rooted in history, consistency, and seamless access

Brands that remember their rhythm, not just their receipts

What They Reject:

Fragmented CRM tactics

Overly aggressive VIP pushes

Experiences that feel impersonal or performative

Emotional Truth:

They don’t want surprise, they want intuitive recognition. They expect luxury to remember them before they even speak.

Case Study: Loewe and the Power of Cultural Fluency

Take Loewe, for example. Previously under Jonathan Anderson, the brand has transformed from traditional heritage house to a masterclass in emotional resonance.

Rather than chasing attention, Loewe engineers emotional tension through:

Understated design that invites interpretation

Casting that feels culturally fluent and emotionally resonant

Visual storytelling that invites cultural conversation and self-interpretation, rather than enforcing conformity

Loewe doesn’t just sell aesthetic, it sells ambiguity, emotional proximity, and cultural literacy. It rewards cultural fluency over overt status, and gives the buyer space to choose who they want to become.

For the Gen Z buyer, Loewe offers a quiet kind of prestige, one rooted in modern innovation, creativity, and self-expression.

For the established buyer, Loewe signals cultural fluency and modern refinement, without abandoning heritage.

Loewe doesn’t just sell products. It reflects personality.

The Market Context

The global population of high-net-worth individuals is expanding fast, and getting younger.

According to Capgemini and Bain, next-gen wealth is accelerating across regions, with Gen Z and Millennial HNWIs projected to dominate by 2030.

This isn’t just a demographic shift.

It’s a fundamental change in how prestige is defined, perceived, and pursued.

And legacy systems weren’t built for that.

Where the System Falls Short, and What Comes Next

The global luxury market is growing fast, but most brands are still optimizing for short-term transactions rather than long-term emotional connection.

CRM systems track spend. But they don’t track becoming.

They weren’t built to model emotional evolution, identity shifts, or symbolic alignment.

I’m building toward a future where luxury brands don’t just recognize their buyers, they evolve with them.

Up Next: Desire by Design

In my next piece, we’ll explore how brands create longing; using scarcity, storytelling, cultural signals, and emotional strategy to build tension and desire.

We’ll look at how brands can turn that tension into a competitive advantage, and what it means to truly design desire.

If you’re a founder, strategist, investor, or creative reshaping the future of industry, this space is for you. Or, if you’re simply curious about what’s coming next!

Let’s redefine what luxury means now, and let’s build what’s next, together.

This is just the beginning. Relevance is emotional. Status is emotional capital. Access is everything. We’re not just watching a shift in the luxury market, we’re witnessing the rise of a new operating system for prestige commerce.

And most brands are still playing by outdated rules.

With close to a decade at the intersection of strategy, innovation, and consumer insight, I’ve advised some of the world’s most culturally influential brands. My background in enterprise tech saw me leading global client initiatives in AI-powered innovation, brand evolution, and future-facing consumer engagement.

But it’s in the world of luxury that the signals are loudest, and the stakes are highest. What I’ve come to understand is this:

Luxury isn’t a category. It’s a code.

A psychological system rooted in desire, identity, social storytelling, and emotional depth.

Emotion Is the Strategy

In traditional commerce, value is defined by functionality; what does the product do? Can we make it faster, cheaper, smarter?

In luxury, value is emotional.

We ask ourselves questions like; what does this brand say about me? How does it make me feel? Who does it allow me to become in the eyes of others?

A luxury purchase isn’t about logic, it’s about psychology:

A £20,000 handbag isn’t about utility alone, it’s about cultural signalling.

A tailored jacket isn't only about the fit, it’s about identity armour.

A private client event isn’t a campaign alone, it’s a stage for status performance.

You’re not selling the thing, you’re selling what the thing means.

Thanks for reading The Art of Capital! They ask, who do we want to include? And how do we make them want in? This is where selectivity, scarcity, and storytelling intersect.

Scarcity builds emotional tension. Storytelling layers cultural value onto objects. Access becomes the product.

Desire isn’t accidental, it’s strategically engineered. Most categories sell through abundance, luxury sells through intentional omission.

Culture, AI, and the Identity Economy

The luxury market isn’t just evolving, it’s being rewritten.

Wealth is younger, more global, and more digitally fluent.

Status is less about logos, more about language.

AI is transforming personalisation, segmentation, and brand intimacy. It’s reshaping the emotional layers of engagement.

We're entering an era where algorithms will influence aspiration, desirability will be data-informed, and cultural fluency will replace legacy as the key luxury advantage. This is the identity economy, and it rewards brands that know how to decode their audience on an emotional, and social level.

My Perspective: Where Emotion Meets Intelligence

I come from the world of tech, so naturally, it will always have my heart. Leading strategic growth for global clients, helping them innovate with AI, and engaging a new generation of digital-first audiences, will always be a core part of my work.

But I’ve always been focused on much more than just data, I care about how brands feel, not just how they perform.

My thesis is simple - luxury will be won by brands that understand emotional power, and know how to systemise it.

This Series: The Psychology of Luxury

This piece marks the beginning of The Psychology of Luxury, a living series within The Art of Capital.
