Coming home, I knew my little patio garden would need some TLC. The pansies, nasturtiums, and roses were all sunstroke. I moved each of my pots to optimal positions and some deadheading. A few days later, everyone looked to be doing much better. In our old apartment, there wasn’t a single place to keep a plant happy. I forgot how much I love gardening, even if it’s just a couple small pots of edible flowers. It changes up your rhythm, makes you observe and problem solve. Choosing edible plants is also a sweet way of playing with your own herbs and beautiful plating when serving meals or drinks.

I’ve been hitting the secondhand jackpot lately. I pulled these wicker patio seats out of the dumpster a couple of weeks ago, and yesterday was blessed with an amazing thrift haul; new comfy mom shoes, a Goorin Bros hat for $7, veils for Mass, and this $30 rocking chair for the nursery.

I was wiping down rocking chair thinking about the life it had before. The dust of an old woman on cushion, something spilt on the leg that couldn’t be reached. Buying furniture secondhand makes me curious of the memories they hold, and now, for this chair, a new life begins in a baby nursery.

Pregnancy brain is so real! I feel like a grandma repeating questions. The other day, I was holding a dirty spoon in one hand and the salt shaker in the other…guess which one ended up in the lazy Susan on the table? I’m entering the third trimester, and started to feel more emotional as well as some discomfort in my joints. It’s so weird how each week is truly different. Baby kicks after I eat and does a little wiggling around bedtime; she’s getting stronger hands and feet. This weekend I’m starting on my decorations for the baby shower, I’ll definitely post a little overview of how we set everything up after the fact.

Last week my husband and I were in the town over on a date and wondered into a parish we’ve never been in before. Immediately the small hall brought calm and peace. There was only one other person in adoration. The sun seemed to stretch into every nook like a warm hug. Downstairs, the ladies of PREPARES were organizing baby supplies for new parents. We got to chatting and they supplied us with a gorgeous collection of hand knitted baptism clothing, diapers, and new born supplies. It was such an unexpected blessing!

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, retinol, hydroquinone, salicylic acid above 2%, benzoyl peroxide, octinoxate, oxybenzone, and phthalates should be avoided or at least discussed with a doctor before using while pregnant. Although I’ve been looking at ingredient lists before purchasing for a while, the products that I felt comfortable using while pregnant really narrowed down. If I couldn’t do my readings, I could at least spend my quiet time in more prayer listening to His voice, and casting my anxieties onto the cross. I thought of Mary’s Fiat; her great trust and personal relationship with our Lord. The joyful surrender visible in her response to her cousin, when Elizabeth says, “And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. “-Luke 1:45-48. If you’ve ever been pregnant, you know there are long waiting periods between doctor’s appointments. Early pregnancy within the stillness of Lent has taught me a lot about patience and trust. In the times of waiting, I find comfort in these scriptures as well as the Psalms.

I did my best to give my body what it was asking for and listened to the positive experiences of other women. I have a lot of support from my husband, friends, and family. I probably didn’t cook for two months! Now that my body is visually changing, and I can feel kicking, I’m more connected with my daughter and myself. I still can’t fathom that we will be holding this tiny human in our arms this Autumn!

Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Saviour, and my hope is in you all day long. -Psalm 25:4-5

Today we’re focusing on linen, hemp, and cotton. My favorite material for bedding is linen. It’s durable, becomes softer over time, and moisture-wicking. It also uses less pesticides to grow compared to traditional cotton. My favorite brands are Piglet in Bed, Coyuchi, Quince, and Tekla for bedding and towels. For towels and bath textiles in general, you’re going to want 100% cotton or 100% hemp. I don’t own any textiles that are hemp, but I’d like to because it is really absorbent, yet fast drying. The hemp plant needs far less water to grow compared to cotton, making it the most sustainable option.

In difficult times, artists create worlds of escape, to hold pain, and reflect their resilient joy. Encapsulated, this work has been passed down to us. The Harlem Renaissance is one of the most important cultural movements, specifically in U.S. history that is not talked about enough. The marination of poets, musicians, writers, and visual creators forever changed American culture and intellectualism through the lens of the Black experience.

This year, I’m continuing to step back from streaming platforms(one streaming platform seems to be enough for us). Not only as way to save money, but decentralize tv in our home. I believe we can utilize technological resources while embracing an analog life. It’s not an either or, but a marrying of the two for a less cluttered life: Think using a Kindle to save space on your bookshelf. Let’s focus on slow curation vs overconsumption/filling the void. Projector

We’ve been using a projector instead of a tv for four months, and I love it! It’s definitely not necessary. They are expensive, and you should use what you have already. However, we decided to get a project so our living room isn’t organized around viewing a tv. It’s now more of a gathering space for conversation, and even some piano playing rather than going straight for the remote.

Portable Hard Drive

Keeping movies on a portable hard drive reduces clutter and is perfect for travel. Return to your favorite movies and shows without ads!

DVD Player

I got mine for $4.99 at the thrift store that retails for $300. Just make sure it can play Blu-ray as well as DVD, you’ll have a larger range of movies and shows to pick from.

Libby App

The free library app! You need your own library card to access content, but from there you can enjoy thousands of books and audiobooks from your devices.

Kindle

I bought my husband a Kindle and Unlimited Subscription for Christmas last year. The yearly Kindle Unlimited Subscription was $119.90. You can also use the Libby App on most Kindle models.

Kanopy & hoopla App

The free library apps for movies, tv shows, and documentaries without ads. Check if your library branch offers these. Like Libby, you need a library card to enjoy these. I haven’t used them myself, but I’ve heard they carry popular titles.

Happy New Year!

I hope you had a peaceful holiday season. As much as I’m all for self improvement and new year goal setting, I believe leaning inwards without outside distraction, reveals the true desires of the heart. Returning to the path of truth, we find our ultimate home. That is why there is an unsettled feeling each year when “rebranding” videos fill For You Pages all January long. Asking yourself to take on straneous new routines in the middle of winter, may be a little harsh on your body and soul.

We are all fighting to be seen and loved in our own way, not only by others…but ourselves. When I hear “Rebranding in the New Year” , what I really hear is “Attempting to Change who I am at my core to sell myself to the masses.” However, you are not a commodity and change does not happen over night.

Aspirations based on best case scenarios and societal ideals only creates cycles of disappointment.

Instead, I challenge you this year to reflect deeply on the last. Look at what would bring you true joy and peace. What would make your younger self proud? Pushing so hard right after the holiday season is a bit unethical. Let your body meditate on winter, it’s not over yet.

I love that this year, “need, read, wear” is the guide for gift giving. Although it is only early November, now is the time to at least mentally put together a list of gifts for family and friends. Receiving something that has thought behind it, always feels special compared to lots of poorly made items that may last a month or two. High quality clothing and home goods are getting more difficult to find every year. Browse thrift stores, art markets, and craft for your loved ones.

I’m inspired by people who curate slowly and frugally in all aspects of life; buying bulk and cooking delicious meals from scratch, purchasing craftsman furniture and art secondhand, and learning new skills to make exaclty what they need. You can make do with very little and still have a beautiful environment and things that outlast your lifetime. This goes with holiday decor too.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the ads and overconsumption that comes with this time, I encourage you to get away from fast paced digital media. Get on Pinterest, look through magazines, watch old movies. You don’t need a theme, you don’t need to buy new decor every year. Presence, tradition, and appreciation, are what make the holidays so special.

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup of brown sugar

• 1/2 cup of granulated sugar

• 2 tsp of vanilla extract

• 1 room temp egg

• 1/3 cup of melted butter

• 1 1/3rd cup of flour

• 1/2 tsp of baking soda

• 1/2 tsp of baking powder

• 3/4 tsp of salt

• 1 cup of coconut flakes

• 2 chopped chocolate caramel bars

• 1/2 cup of crushed walnuts

1. Add and mix the first group of ingredients together.

2. Add flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

3. Chop the chocolate caramel bars into chunks.

4. Combine walnuts, coconut flakes, and chopped chocolate into the cookie dough.

5. Roll into 6-8 balls and freeze for 20 min on baking sheet.

6. Bake for 20 min at 350 degrees and sprinkle, let cool, and sprinkle with salt.

Our lifestyle has completely changed. And though for the best, like usual I still had a difficult time adjusting. Moving from a fancy apartment in the city, my family and parish just a few minutes away has been difficult. But finally living the lifestyle we’ve worked towards for a while now, has been rewarding.

It’s a gift to live in the present, however unfamiliar. I’ve made a very conscious effort to let go of what productivity will look like in this season of us moving and getting situated in this new place. Which was challenging because I literally had a list of ideas for articles and videos to do (shout out to everyone who was commented on my last post!).

This really is a season of fruition/harvest after a year or so of painful pruning, growth, and deepening faith. Whether you’re going through difficult or nourishing times, I recommend keeping a journal. Not only a place for release, but reflection for months or years down the line. You may see themes and find some clarity in your story. This has challenged me to explore themes in my life and reveal true wants.

I’ve been enjoying slowing down and living more presently. Adding to our home intentionally, and marveling at the simple.

The first weeks of school are now in session and the changes of Autumn stop us right in our tracks to reflect on daily living a bit more. The nostalgia of this season is not only from returning to heavier layers and warmer drinks, but school atmosphere. It’s no surprise there is a romanticization of academia every September.

Last year, book clubs and harboring discussion on social media around philosophy was on the rise. Substack and YouTube gave space for long form media; hosting those interested in sharing their learning process within the notion of further education outside of the classroom. This Spring, MIT, Harvard, and Yale opened free classes to the general public to audit. Thus, developing the “Dark Academia” aesthetic, that was so popular last year, into a call to action outside of social media: The Personal Curriculum. I believe many people find this inspiring as we are realizing the important of preserving books, physical media, and history. A Personal Curriculum can also have “courses” on anything that you’re interested in, it’s really just a guide to keep you on track to learn about subjects in a timely manner using multiple trustworthy sources.

Anyway…even if people are just doing this for aesthetic, the celebration of the “smart girl” archetype makes little Nia dance with excitement! Here’s what I’ll be up to this Autumn:

Our one year wedding anniversary passed two weeks ago. Each week leading up to the date, I felt the heaviness of loss. Trauma holds a remembrance in your body. In these twelve months I’ve been mourning over relationships that are tied to the living. I tried to stay busy, but just found myself over consuming without realizing it. I was trying to reach for answers anywhere. It’s almost impossible to be still in chaos.

In the thick of it, how to forgive is what brought me back to my Faith and relationship with God.  I have recently learned, besides the original hurt, there is a secondary thief of sanity; a fear of trust that falls in your lap. Healing is not linear, nor always graceful. Sometimes it looks like fighting autoimmune diseases triggered by stress, questioning who you are, or straight up wanting to run away. In times I feel I’m about to spiral, I am learning to hold onto; what is true, being still, and the family culture my husband and I are creating.

Here is what’s helping me get through this confusing time of loss, and how I am rebuilding. I’m also sharing some scripture, but as always~All are welcome here, and if it’s not helpful…just skip it!

Live Intentional

Honor Others & Boundaries

When people treat you poorly, it’s coming from a place of their own hurt. With knowing that, have grace while being clear with your boundaries.

I’ve been seeing a therapist for over five years! I’m extremely blessed to have a professional that knows me well and can “tell me how it is”, with an outsiders perspective.

Surrender Reliance to God

This has been really difficult for me because I struggle with anxiety; I always want to plan my next move. I need to remind myself I have very little control.

Psalm 46:10: Be still, and know that I am God.

Proverbs 3.5: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

Philippians 4.6-7: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 6.25: Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

Reconciliation Requires Two Parties

I believe forgiveness releases the hold of the other person, especially if that other person is not ready to reconcile. Accepting that you may never hear “sorry” or see accountability can cause a lot of pain. I try to offer this back up to God.

Matthew 5:23 -24: So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you. Leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

Seek Truth

In this time, I’m holding onto what I know to be true about myself, and who I am to other people. It’s been beautiful slowly building a family culture with my husband. Although hesitant, I pushed myself this year to build on my female friendships. And through this, I am comforted by the reflection of kindness.

What God says about me >Feeling of lack

Jeremiah 29:11:  For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Psalm 139:13: For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Butter vs Lotion

Lotions are water-based, allowing them to quickly moisturize, making it a better choice for oily skin. They need emulsifiers to keep things from separating, and usually leave a matte finish.

Butters create a wax barrier and typically lasts longer thank lotions. They lock in moisture, so using a lotion with a butter could be really beneficial on days you feel extra dry. Butters are oil-based, which makes them better for dryer skin. They can be bought in a raw form like shea butter or in a mix of butter and oils. I really like them because they leave a shiny finish.

Body Care Routine:

You gotta start with antibacterial soap and a fresh wash cloth, body wash is not enough!

Body Wash

Next is body wash. I have to admit, I didn’t use body wash until a couple of years ago. It’s not completely necessary…but it is one of those luxuries I 100% will work into my beauty budget. I’ve seen actual changes in the dark spots and the feel of my skin from using Nécessaire The Body Wash | Multi-Enzyme in the Olibanum scent.

Claim From Their Website:

Exfoliator

If I’m using any exfoliations(physical or chemical), I only will use it once a week. I love the Alpha Beta® Universal Daily Peel by Dr Dennis Gross. You can get away with using a physical exfoliate 2-3 times a week.

Moisturizer

From there I’ll go in with the Nécessaire lotion, or Shea butter infused body oil during the night. During the day I like to wear raw Shea butter and then the Rose Gold Sun Shield Body Glow Sunscreen SPF 45 from Kopari. It’s important to find a good sunscreen that works, but won’t be too thick on the skin (unless you want to spend a long time scrubbing it off at the end of the day).

Deodorant

I’ve been loving Salt & Stone Deodorant. It’s one of the only natural deodorants that works for me. I use the Black Rose and Oud Scent. Its aluminum-free. It contains prebiotics to help neutralize odor and seaweed extracts to moisturize the skin.

Fragrance

Earlier this year I searched far and wide for low toxic perfumes. I bought many samples, sniffed at stores, and watched reviews. A lot of non toxic perfumes smell like soap or all the same to me. Then I found Henry Rose. Currently, my Spring/Summer fragrance is Dave. It’s a peppery and cinnamon vanilla that starts a bit masculine and then becomes cloudy like sipping on a London Fog.

• Large Cafes: Coordinating with a local cafe that has slow hours is a great way to bring in business, while having a cute and public space to meet up. The downsides are…you will have limits on what you can bring into the space (less crafting), and if you don’t have it in writing, the cafe could just change their minds or be closed at the last minute (which happened once, even though I talked to them). I really do like this option, especially for Fall and Winter months when outside isn’t really an option.

• Apartment Facilities: Unfortunately my apartment charges quite a bit for booking the community room. I was able to use mine once for a holiday party that was perfect! It’s just a big risk if you’re not going to pay to book it.

Public Spaces

• Picnic: Simple and sweet. The easiest meet up, you just may have some stares and questions if a lot of you are meeting up.

• Walking: This is what I started with! We do a “Coffee and Yap” meet up in a gorgeous park in Seattle. Have everyone meet at a coffee shop to grab a drink and then walk around the park.

Online Spaces

• Zoom: in the Winter we did Book Club! This was fun because one of my friends living in Japan was able to join, it’s just less personal.

Classes

• Pottery Class: A lot of social clubs encourage everyone to sign up for a third party event like a pottery class, wine tasting, Pilates, etc. We did a pottery class together, it was lovely but a week later people had to find time to pick up their pieces. I like this idea…but not everyone can drop $30-$95 for a meet up in this economy, plus I really love planning and preparing everything myself.

I’d like to include a reflection, for people who may also want to host. Here’s some honesty; more people will cancel last minute than you think, and if you host in free spaces, you’re taking a chance they may not be available when you need them. I love that I was able to keep these free for my community, however in the future I may charge a small fee to incentivize. This would help cover the cost of art and food supplies, which tends to be the focal point of the gathering.

My dream is to host in upscale hotels and gardens, maybe in my own garden one day. Again, thank you so much for supporting me, putting energy, and time into coming to events.

One Year Garden Plan

1. Zones & Dates: Before buying anything, you need to research what zone you’re in and frost dates, which can be found through USDA and a quick google search. This information is really important when planning which seeds to start according to temperature.

2. Garden Books: Pick up some gardening books that are specific to your zone/from authors in the same state as you. I really like The Cut Flower Garden by Erin Benzakein.

3. Follow Creators In Your Zone: I find it so helpful to follow gardening content creators in your zone because you get live updates and can take notes through the season. This may also give you a chance to ask questions, directly to people who know what they’re doing.

4. Map Your Garden Space: Go outside to your gardening space with some paper to map out where you want to grow specific plants. Do this one when the sun is the highest, so you can see what parts get the most exposure to rays and heat. Then decide if you want to put in raised beds or no till beds. When it comes to flowers, as long as the soil is healthy, and you’re able to control the weeding…raised beds aren’t necessary. At this time we can think about what seeds to order and companion planting! Companion planting is a wonderful strategy that groups plants who work well together and can even deter pests. An example of this grouping are; roses, echinacea, and lavender or zinnias, cosmos, and nasturtiums.

5. Buy Basic Tools: The four tools you will absolutely need are; a till, gloves, shovel, and hose or water can. You can easily get fancy with equipment, but as you may have realized at this point…gardening can be pretty costly.

6. Prepare The Soil: It’s time to get dirty! Buy a couple bags of compost and work it into the soil. You most likely will need to spray the soil down for it to become malleable. At this time if you want to add stepping stones or clover for a soft walkway, now is the time.

7. Start The Seeds: Order your seeds online or buy in-person well before frost dates. I like to start my seeds inside under a grow light, this gives them the best chance to grow to their full potential. For the majority of my seeds, I start them in a 50/50 mix of compost and vermiculite. I recommend doing a bit of research to see what works best for each plant. If you are starting in early Autumn, start larger plants in small pots so you can bring them inside during harsh winter weather. If you love allium, crocus, and tulip, make sure to plant bulbs outside in the Autumn before the ground hardens.

8. Plant a Mix: If you want blooms all year with minimal physical work, you’ll have to do a bit more research to choose a mix of perennials & annuals. Once the lovely cosmo and poppy fall asleep in late Summer, the Chinese Lantern, Sunflower, and Golden Rod will take its place in your cut garden going into Autumn. Some examples of perennials are: Hydrangeas, Snapdragons, and Black-Eyed Susans. Once these are in, you won’t have to worry about starting them from seed the next year.

9. Basic Care: Some flowers like cosmos require pinching and deadheading to grow to their full bushy potential. This cut and come again flower is able to increase in size and give you many blooms if you first snip the third pairing of leaves of the seedling. “Deadheading”, or snipping the old flowers will help the plant focus on producing new blooms instead of using its energy for the drooping flowers. Especially in the heat of the Summer, water regularly, avoiding the hottest part of the day so petals won’t burn.

10. Putting them to bed: Once the cold hits, it’s time to put your garden to sleep, this can mean cutting stocks down, letting seeds fall to regrow in the Spring, or composting. Continue to check and care for your perennials.

I spent early winter preparing seeds for my wedding garden and watched how an empty corner of a yard transform into a cut flower garden, fit for a fairy. Not only was I able to use the blooms for my wedding, but it pushed me to spend more time outside and enjoy natural wonders in a busy cityscape.

In the garden we learn to adapt to an ever-changing natural world, muck through soil just to hold the impermanent beauty of a full vase. We partake in the full life cycle of the flower. I hope you find that your garden is a teacher and sanctuary.

A little Timeline On My Faith Journey:

• My parents are divorced, but my father’s side of the family practices Brazilian Candomblé, which is an African Diasporic Religion with Catholic influences. My mother’s side of the family is culturally Catholic.

• 2nd and 3rd grade: Catholic school.

• 4th-8th grade at Waldorf school (which celebrates pagan holidays and saints).

• High school: I stopped going to church, I wasn’t vibing with the anti LGBTQ stuff.

• College: browsed different religions and faiths.

• Married August 2024: It was a really really hard year, I began to read my Bible to learn more about forgiveness. We also started taking my grandma to a Jesuit parish.

• September: started OCIA.

• April: Got baptized.

When I first started attending my church I immediately felt calm and knew the presence of God was in the space and community. I continue to feel this way, months later. In learning about the Jesuits, I see why I’ve always connected and admired what is said in the homely. I’ve always loved ritual and knowing the order of what was to come, so I’m sure thats what made me feel so comfortable as well.

What’s The Deal With RCIA/OCIA?

I took the opportunity to join OCIA(Order of Christian Initiation) when it was offered by my Parish, it’s also a requirement for adult baptism. I was a bit nervous to go to meetings in the beginning…but I quickly found the group was extremely kind and accepting. I also appreciated how much work went into planning and facilitating the meetings. The group leaders did a wonderful job of leading discussions and formulating questions that provoked deep thought. I loved how organized OCIA was too, being able to have a full calendar of what was to come and Catholic Update/Journey of Faith pamphlets to take home…made it simple to focus on each week’s theme. The first half of OCIA is for anyone who wants a space to talk about faith and spirituality in general and be able to ask questions about Catholicism. The second half is for people ready to commit to the journey of joining the Catholic Church. We met an hour before Mass and then would go to the services.

Triduum…and a Bucket of Tears

The Triduum is the most important part of Holy Week: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. This is when we got baptized! Holy Thursday arrived, I was nervous because my husband was not going to be there…and we’d be washing the feet of the community. To cut the story short, it was actually very organized and went well. However, I did not expect how emotional I was going to get watching the Eucharist being carried to the “garden”, a symbol of how Jesus departed from the disciples. In the low lights, and ocean of incense, I couldn’t hold back tears. After Mass they held space for people to pray and meditate on readings that were spoken every 15 minutes.

On Good Friday, the OCIA group carried a cross throughout the congregation, allowing every single person to touch it. It was really beautiful working as a team for our new community. Everyone was encouraged to leave what they needed to on the cross. Saturday, the Easter Vigil was the longest Mass. The three hour Mass started around a fire outside. We all lit a candle and proceeded into the parish. There was singing, and dancing, and many readings. Honestly, I was so nervous a lot of it was a blur. But we got baptized with our godparent/sponsor standing by our side. My husband and I had the privilege of having my grandmother as our sponsor. I feel so blessed to have shared this with her. My confirmation name is Mary (as in Mother Mary), which is also my grandma’s name.

After we were baptized we dried off, slipped out of our grey robes to white ones, and joined everyone else. We were confirmed and received the communion for the first time, it all felt so special.

Since then, I’ve continued to work on my relationship with God and study the Word. I love creating time everyday for this. It’s been so interesting to talk to people about this journey in real life, I hope this gives you an insight on what you may go through when joining the Holy Catholic Church.

I began to lose myself, and called it “rebranding”. Over the last few months I’ve created some boundaries with social media. The constant news cycle, comparing myself, and being easily persuaded into buying things I don’t need…really wasn’t helping my mental health. Not to mention the hours I’d spend scrolling, chasing a dopamine rush. “Keeping Up With The Jones” had me also feeling the need to overshare. This addiction to validation, while constantly adopting narratives; hoping to be categorized (accepted), was too heavy. Fear and focusing on what you lack leaves you scrambling and off course to what you’ve been working towards.

I’ve noticed many other people are also feeling this way and leaving short form media platforms, to live more presently. When they do produce content, they put a lot of effort into it. This is why we’re seeing a flood of people returning to YouTube, and flocking to Substack. I’m sure if you’re reading this…you also see this shift!

Some people have pointed out that we are showcasing our offline lives…online in a performative type of way. That isn’t surprising. We are in a recession, meaning free time is a luxury. Eating healthy foods, exercising, and having hobbies is seen as a status symbol. Unfortunately, companies and influencers will capitalize on this. We recently saw this in the “That Girl” trend. You don’t need a Pilates membership to exercise, nor need to wake up at 5am to do your red light therapy to be productive. When absorbing lifestyle content, I avoid anyone pushing extremes, has shopping links in every video, or produces videos under 15 seconds long.

Which brings me to TikTok…it’s a great place to discover creators and information. I use it more as a search engine than a social platform. For the last 6 months I’ve kept the app on my iPad(at home)instead of my phone, so I am less tempted to waste time on it. Additionally, for Lent I gave up my personal Instagram account, which has given me so much time to be present, build relationships in real life, and give my creativity space to spark.

When I redownload Instagram to my phone, I have guidelines and changes to help keep my head on straight. Firstly, I’m viewing all content as either art or education (this goes for films too). Of course I’ll still watch a silly movie or video every once in a while, but I want to be more intentional with how I use my time. I’ve also decided to make my personal accounts private and to use them less often. I want to treat Sincerely, Anastacia as a lifestyle brand that inspires you guys! Think old school Martha Stewart. Planning out specific content through the month and taking time to beautifully execute it will be way more rewarding than posting and trying to sell myself everyday, all day on my personal accounts.

It is so easy to start mirroring everyone else online when trying to be successful through social media. I’d suggest to anyone to take a break, for the sake of your creativity and mental health. Keep a journal and check in on your mental health and how media affects it. Take notes when consuming content. I believe there is a healthy way to interact with the online universe.
