but something shifted when she launched her newsletter service95, followed by the podcast and book club of the same name. she evolved into something so much more than a singer. she became a curator of culture.

as i followed and explored her content across all channels, i started noticing how closely the life she was living resembled the one i was trying to build for myself — one centred around travel, food and wine, books, community, conversations that matter, intentional choices and the curated presentation of it all online.

i realised she was basically just me, if i had 120 million dollars, a stronger core and access to far more resources.

another thing that fascinated me was how she found the time and energy to do all these side quests as if she hadn’t already achieved enough or lived a fulfilling life. her curiosity and efforts towards becoming more intellectual made me even more curious.

since signing up to service95 the moment it launched in 2022, i knew what my new standard in life had become. it was definitely not looking like dua lipa, but adopting her philosophy and lifestyle.

even though i would do anything to have luscious hair like hers, a hot husband or the bikini she once wore on holiday, i know what i actually want is to be everything, everywhere, all at once, just like she is.

like everyone else on the worldwide web, i too admire the lifestyle. but i am far more interested in the operating system behind it.

so i reverse-engineered it and shamelessly borrowed the internet’s latest favourite suffix while i was at it.

radical optimism

if you’re going to take away one thing from this article, let it be this way of thinking.

but before we dive in, what actually is “radical optimism”? in dua’s own words, it’s “the idea of going through chaos gracefully and feeling like you can weather any storm.”

and if the first thing you thought while reading this was “well, if i had her life, i would be radically optimistic too,” i’m afraid we can’t help you.

this mindset is not built on toxic positivity. it’s not pretending life is sunshine and butterflies at all times, but actively and radically choosing to see the positive side of things. not letting anything get you down for too long. being able to move forward from any challenge, heartbreak, setback or pain.

i see it as emotional maturity. understanding that challenges are part of life and no one is exempt from them. but how you choose to react, how you deal with them and how you show up afterwards is what really matters.

no one is born a radical optimist. it’s the art of choosing to see the upside and keep moving forward. a matter of choice, not ability. a muscle you build and a principle you practise daily.

because honestly, what’s the other option?

another thing dua strongly believes in is the power of words. especially for someone like her, whose job is to repeat the same words over and over again, it makes so much sense that she would want to be careful with them. the things you repeat become your mantras. so you might as well make them positive ones.

how you talk about yourself, your life and your dreams matter. those words eventually become your beliefs and the lens through which you see yourself and the world. they shape what you believe is possible for you.

your mind probably went straight to manifestation, but i don’t think it’s anything spiritual. there’s no way someone who constantly speaks negatively can build a positive life. it’s as simple as that.

so, every day, choose to speak so radically positively about yourself that people wonder what you know that they don’t.

a woman of substance
two novels, a spanish textbook and multiple notebooks. the contents of dua’s beat-up hermès birkin tell you almost everything you need to know about her.

a citizen of the world with an appetite for different cultures and cuisines, other items she carries in her bag include a hot sauce, furikake (a japanese rice topper), shichimi (another japanese spice blend) and yuzu matcha. she says she always carries them to spice up her meals when they’re too plain. elevating every single experience. hi, twin.

the books she reads are not just random picks but usually novels translated from foreign languages. a polish novel one day, the neapolitan trilogy the next, dua explores the world not only through the lavish holidays we get jealous of, but through the books she reads too.

she spends her time improving her spanish — hence the duolingo vs dua lipa memes all over the internet — and practises with her teacher via zoom even while she’s on tour. talk about having no excuses.

her most significant venture is the service95 newsletter, which she calls “the ultimate cultural concierge”. the newsletter covers everything culture, activism, lifestyle, travel and shopping, and is home to the famous book club of the same name.

every month, dua picks a book for the club and reads it with her community. the photos she posts to announce that month’s pick have become iconic. if you know, you know. as if that wasn’t enough, she also finds the time to discuss the book with its author on her podcast afterwards.

when you open her newsletter, you’ll most likely find the most diverse email in your inbox. people of different races, cultures, religions, sexual orientations and lived experiences all have a seat at her table. they all belong, and their work is promoted and celebrated through service95.

are you still with me? because it doesn’t end there.

dua is known for being vocal about political injustices and humanitarian crises. she has used her platform multiple times to speak up about the genocide in gaza and launched a permanent library of challenged, banned and censored books in portugal. our fearless leader.

women, refugees, asylum seekers, the queer community and many other marginalised groups are not only among those she actively supports, but they also influence the books she chooses for the book club.

if i had to put it down to one thing, i think she is who she is because of her passion for reading and knowing. immersing herself in the real world, not just her own. having a genuine interest in other people and their stories. because reading makes you empathetic, culturally aware and articulate, and as a result, interesting.

if this isn’t the perfect recipe for becoming a woman with substance, i don’t know what is. she cracked the code. if we really want to copy her, we should start here.

levitating
dua is the epitome of the epicurean i’m aiming to become. after spotting my favourite melbourne venues in her travel guide, celebrating my birthday at the restaurant she dined at just a day earlier in manila, and seeing one of the most charming restaurants in rome (where i'd been on one of my own date nights) on her honeymoon itinerary, i’m pretty convinced i’m on the right path. perhaps all those hours planning my holidays have finally paid off.

one thing that unites us: we travel like locals. we do our research before visiting a city, wherever in the world. we make sure we eat where the locals eat and visit that historic bookshop tucked away in a random neighbourhood. every time i see one of her holiday dumps on instagram, i recognise the intention. i know that itinerary was curated meticulously. nothing is accidental, very little is spontaneous.

i truly respect someone who is constantly on holiday yet still pays attention to every single detail, treating each trip so preciously. it’s the same energy i invest in my yearly four-week europe trips.

i know when people look at her holiday photos, they think they’re quite unattainable. if i only looked at the hotels she stayed in and the yachts she chartered, i’d think the same. but looking beyond the surface helps here. the point is being willing to invest the same amount of thought into a budget-friendly itinerary.

can’t afford the fancy restaurant? find the street vendor stanley tucci ate at in his documentary instead. beach club in mykonos not in the budget (thank god)? hike to the little rocky cove. can’t charter a yacht? take the makeshift fisherman’s boat that gets you between islands when you’re stranded (true story).

you’ll never regret planning your travel itinerary as if you’re dua lipa, regardless of your budget, time or outfits. especially when they’re limited.

the village that raised you

there is only one area where i believe dua got lucky, and that’s her family. for better or worse, you can’t choose them, but it looks like she actually won the lottery there. it must be nice to work with your dad and party with your mum.

perhaps that’s the very reason she grew into someone so firmly rooted. she still spends most of her time with her family and the same friends she’s had since she was a tween. in my apparently endless list of things i admire about her, this might be one of the biggest.

she’s not only deeply connected to her family and friends, but proudly celebrates her albanian heritage at every opportunity as well. her passion for giving back to her homeland, uplifting her community and preserving her culture deserves real respect.

it only felt natural she eventually turned that passion into a charity organisation called sunny hill foundation and a festival with the same name, held every summer in the heart of kosovo. she uses it as another opportunity to celebrate diversity, something easily noticeable by looking at the festival lineup that includes artists from all over the world, from italy to türkiye and beyond.

having built a life far away from the one i grew up in myself, witnessing dua’s passion for celebrating her roots and uplifting her community is a good reminder for me that becoming a global citizen doesn’t mean becoming disconnected from where you came from or the people who shaped you. if anything, the two make each other even richer.

training season is over

in one of her interviews, dua says that after a bad date, she walked into the studio and announced, “guys, training season is over. i’m done training up these boys. no more.”

if you still think she’s above the rest of us, think again.

that’s how her hit song training season was born. that’s when she solidified her standards. and that’s why earlier i wrote that this isn’t about manifesting “someone to hold you close, deeper than you’ve ever known.”

she learnt her lessons, knew what she wanted, set the bar high and kept repeating it to herself so she never forgot what she was looking for and, more importantly, what she was no longer willing to settle for.

seeing her husband now, i think it’s safe to say she really meant it.

i hope you’re not looking for dating advice here because i’m as hopeless as the next person, but the real takeaway is how important it is to have high standards in every aspect of your life, keep reminding yourself what you actually want, and never settle for anything less than that. make this song your anthem for next time you’re about to double text that man.

to cockily quote myself: you will never regret not settling.

let’s get physical

i’ll admit that i’m always drawn to beauty and care about vanity just as much as i care about my health. but for once, can we focus on this woman’s actual core strength? i’m in awe.

and with thanks to none other than good old yoga and pilates. no wonder dua is both an investor in and the face of a reformer pilates company because, honestly, who else could sell it better?

i guess as a performer, there’s a real responsibility for her to stay fit on top of looking the part. but i’ll still give it to the lady who can do a headstand in high heels and jeans.

dua invests in her recovery just as much as she invests in her workouts. in a video posted to her instagram, we see her drinking electrolytes for hydration, taking colostrum for immune support and chugging magnesium pills before bed every night for deep sleep and muscle recovery. in another, she mentions regularly taking manuka honey drops for her vocal cords.

her recovery routine doesn’t stop there — compression socks are another non-negotiable she carries in her bag. even with a private jet at her disposal, this girl takes no chances when it comes to looking after her body. there’s a reason i feel such an unexplainable pull and familiarity towards her.

everyone wants the body, the skin and the effortless glow. very few people want the systems, routines and habits that created them. i’ll forever defend women whose discipline gets mistaken for luck.

a life worth documenting
it takes one to know one. if you follow me on instagram, you know not a day goes by without me posting something aesthetically pleasing on my stories, and eventually, the very same photos on my grid. it’s a full-time job.

more than anything, i do it for myself. it genuinely brings me joy. i approach documenting my life with the same enthusiasm sam youkilis approaches his, except nobody's paying me for it. as a matter of fact, i watch my own stories more than anyone else’s. if you haven’t picked up on it yet, yes, i love myself a little too much.

some people think a beautiful grid is born from the life of a wealthy, physically attractive woman. while that is obviously the case for dua, i still believe the intention, time and eye for beauty that go into curating those famous dumps are just as significant.

you don’t have a similar grid because you’re not straightening the horizon on your sunset photo. you don’t have great outfit photos because you’re not asking your friend to take a hundred of them. you visit museums, but don’t stop for a photo in front of an iconic artwork. so, pick your battles.

what i love about dua is that she keeps us well fed, yet it never feels showy. she lets us into her most personal moments, from her honeymoon to her christmas dinner table, yet somehow still leaves us wanting more.

so, if you really want to replicate it — because apparently everyone on the internet does — romanticise your life a little more and take more photos of it. don’t do it performatively. do it because you want to. because you love it. let everyone else appreciating it be a bonus.

go on, take a risk and put yourself out there creatively. we won’t make fun of you.

if my body wash doesn’t foam excessively and lather my whole body, i don’t want it. for me, there’s nothing more irritating than a body or hand wash that disappears into the void. thankfully, this thick and creamy body wash ticks all my boxes. it comes with the scent we all know and love without drying out the skin.

no wonder i ended up buying the one-litre bottle after my third purchase.

i tried everything from the most expensive, fancy ranges to $12 drugstore tiktok favourites. nothing came close to this gorgeous, luxurious and thick body lotion.

this lotion feels like it wraps your skin in a protective layer of hydration. it gives you the moisture you need, not just on the surface, but deep into your skin. with a subtle glow and vanilla scent, even applying it is a sensory experience.

Sol de Janeiro Body Badalada Vitamin-Infused Lotion

this is what i used before discovering the summer fridays lotion. the lotion itself is just as gorgeous, and a great alternative for jar haters like me. she’s the lighter, and in my opinion better, little sister to the famous bum bum cream.

the only downside is, unfortunately, the packaging. towards the end, you’ll need to get super creative to get every last bit of product out. i just wasn’t interested in turning moisturising into a workout, so i went looking for a better one.

that said, it doesn’t change the fact that the lotion itself is top quality and approved by me.

The Naxos Apothecary Koronos Body Oil

this is a bonus because i didn’t purchase it myself. it was a beauty loop gift from , but isn’t it just the best body oil to ever touch my skin? i would love to know more about the science behind making oils feel not oily.

this body oil instantly dries down to a powdery texture with a beautiful scent and a very subtle shine, leaving you feeling like a powdered baby, but with expensive taste.

i’m looking forward to my upcoming trip to athens to visit their flagship store and come home with one of these as a souvenir.

another button i’ve been pressing to save my hair is this nutri-supplement serum. it works brilliantly to hydrate and smooth my dry, split ends between my twice-yearly haircuts (i know, i know. i’m switching to an every four months schedule soon!).

i’ve been using this massager for years now because i find it cleans my scalp better, but the main job of this little guy is to stimulate blood circulation to support hair growth. i’ll take both, thank you.

i use this before my shower to better distribute and work in scalp treatments, and during my shower to help my shampoo cleanse my scalp more thoroughly. two birds, one stone.

ghd The All Rounder Paddle Brush

no, i can’t just buy a dupe from amazon for $20. i love things that feel luxurious, and this brush gives you that the moment you pick it up. it’s heavy, sturdy and has the nicest texture to it, in addition to doing a really good job detangling both wet and dry hair gently.

of course, that only works if you start brushing from the ends and work your way up to the roots, a trick i only learned recently.

another item on the list that i use religiously and couldn’t survive without. if you’re like me and watching celebrities or influencers wash their face without a headband gives you anxiety, you know how essential this is.

and this one here is great quality, adjustable and affordable. i shall say no more.

if we ignore the pink checkered pattern, this kitsch towel needs no notes on performance. it really is quick-drying, anti-frizz and does exactly what it says it will (more reliable than the last guy i dated).

it’s super light, stays in place, and doesn’t pull your hair in different directions or cause breakage. at this point, i treat every single strand like it’s a priceless possession.

i’ll admit the sceptic in me deeply regrets not buying this sooner.

PHLUR Body Mists in Beach Skin, Peach Skin, Vanilla Skin and Cashmere Skin

i can’t wear perfumes because heavy fragrances trigger my migraines, so body mists have become my thing instead.

phlur was the answer to my prayers when they arrived at . they’re light yet noticeable and made for layering — which makes them so fun to play with. most importantly, i’ve yet to find another brand that does body mists this well, with such an extensive range. thank you , for your service.

beach skin is my summer scent because it smells exactly like sunscreen. cashmere skin comes out in winter for something warmer and musky. vanilla skin and peach skin get layered together whenever i’m in the mood to collect compliments.

you’re probably expecting me to list all the reasons why. i won’t.

people always talk about why they’re childfree by choice. they try to justify it or give you good reasons. everyone is so obsessed with the why.

personally, i couldn’t care less. i’m focused on the how.

because let’s be honest, the how is the harder part of this decision. it comes with the weight of a lot of supposed consequences: feeling left out at family gatherings, losing a romantic partner because they wanted kids and thought you’d change your mind, being judged by everyone from your own mother to random acquaintances, the fear of ending up sad and lonely (add cat for dramatic effect), moments of self-doubt, not having anyone to look after you when you’re old (my personal favourite), and so on.

i’ll debunk all that in this article.

as someone who is very secure and settled in her decision, i’ve always focused on how to future-proof myself against those things, rather than wasting my time trying to convince people.

the first thing i did was make peace with the fact that not everyone would understand my decision. the second was accepting that they don’t need to. i’m sharing a personal decision, not submitting a business case.

but i also know i need a plan — for myself. reassurance that this isn’t a sloppy decision. confidence that i’d thought it through. acceptance of the trade-offs that come with it, and a strategy for navigating them.

because if i’m not building a traditional family, i need to be intentional about what i’m building instead.

so, here are my personal pillars.

i recently kicked off the euro summer 2026 planning conversations in all my girls’ group chats and i couldn’t be more ecstatic.

i’m incredibly lucky being able to do this under the very convenient narrative of ‘visiting family and friends’ every european summer since moving to australia in 2019. because i ‘have to’ go, otherwise how could i see my family and friends scattered all across europe?! devastating.

after all, i live far, far away from my loved ones for most of the year, so my month-long trips and the thousands of dollars i spend every time i go are pretty justifiable and well deserved.

i’d say i’m a very low-maintenance and cool/casual traveller, so don’t expect my prep to be over the top. this is all about practicality and simplicity. it’s not fashion advice (just a little, maybe) or a travel itinerary. you have all the creative freedom to build on it. think of this as your foundation.

this is to guide you through your euro summer prep in a simple and foolproof way. because been there, done that — too many clothes i never got to wear, too many shoes i carried around for absolutely no reason, unrealistic fashion choices and impractical packing decisions.

i’m now here to educate you on the basics, the must-haves and the art of keeping it simple — and hopefully, light. so much so it might offend a fashion influencer.

if you’re planning to spend your euro summer at a fancy beach club in saint-tropez, i’m afraid this is not the best guide for you. but if you’re more like me, and enjoy sitting on pebbles at a secluded beach in mainland greece, only accessible via a hike through narrow paths, you’re exactly who this guide is for.

let’s take off!

the flight

i dread this 24-hour-long flight so much, i actually don’t even want to talk about it. my first and best tip is: until you can afford flying at the front of the plane, book economy class tickets with exit row seats. they’re still costly, but absolutely worth it — especially if you’re tall like me. see, having long legs is rough.

if you’re on a budget, choose the aisle seat. you don’t need to, or simply won’t, see anything from that window anyway. the aisle seat gives you flexibility and a little more space.

my second tip is: once you’re settled, take a sleeping pill and pray you sleep for the next 14 hours, so it feels like this flight never happened. if you speak to a pharmacist and tell them you’re going on a long-haul flight, they’ll usually pull something out.

lastly, this year i’ll be investing in compression socks. i erased them from my memory after having a mental breakdown trying to put them on once, but i think it’s time to make peace and see if i can finally enjoy the benefits.

suitcases

i’ve been travelling with the same two suitcases for the last seven years and they’re still in such good condition, they’re warming up for their sixth euro summer. i got my brother, my ex and two of my friends on these relatively affordable suitcases too and they’ve all held up beautifully so far. thank you, american tourister, for your service.

carry-on here and medium here. run, don’t walk because they’re currently half price!

tote bag

i swear by these longchamp le pliage bags. i have the black one and it’s survived countless flights, ferries and trains sitting on top of my carry-on. it weighs nothing, fits your entire life and still looks chic.

if i was buying one today though, i’d get the red one. the black is timeless, but i’ve recently developed a soft spot for dark red accessories and the little pop of colour they bring.

pouch

i don’t go anywhere, let alone europe, without this. if i ever go to the office or travel without my emotional support pouch, it’s a tragedy.

i recently upgraded to this rhode one (love it!), and my essentials in it are as follows:

pills (no link, sorry), a compact mirror, tweezers, brow scissors (rounded nose!), spoolies, lip balms (multiple), lip liners (multiple), a concealer brush (for touch ups), and band-aids (yes, i have opinions on band-aids too).

i’m also considering investing in the larger one. being a bubble bag, it looks like the perfect candidate for stuffing with hair, body and skincare products.

packing cells

if you’re not living under a rock, you’ll know that packing cells are non-negotiable. satisfy all your ‘type a’ cravings, or take it as an opportunity to finally become one.

i usually do 1x tops, 1x bottoms, 1x sets and dresses, 1x underwear, and 1x bikinis and sarongs. then i stuff the rest with the endless bits and pieces i own (and absolutely need) to survive the trip.

this year, i’ll be purchasing these july ones as mine are showing signs of wear and tear and have fallen victim to leaking hair products.

vanity case

my best investment! i use this étoile case full-time and can’t wait to take it on its first trip this summer. it’s spacious, luxurious, practical and pretty.

i love it so much i got one for my best friend too, and now we’re matching. thankfully, hers has her initials on it to make her feel special and ensure they don’t get mixed up at our next reunion location.

jewellery case

i still can’t believe a perfectionist like me didn’t own a jewellery case all these years. honestly, i can’t even remember how i used to transport my accessories before buying one. lifesaver, period.

flip flops

i’m extremely passionate about this one. when i tell you i don’t need any other shoe while travelling between five countries and hiking through mountains to get to a beach, believe me. my beloved havaianas have never failed me.

but sinem, what do you do when you’re going out for cute lunches and dinners? oh, i just switch to my leather havaianas, aka these tkees ones.

as seen on miss hailey bieber, these massimo dutti ones are the slightly more elevated option. and in my ongoing attempt to become a colourful fashion girlie, i’ve also got these on my radar:

kindle

every summer i mourn the version of myself who should be carrying beautiful paperbacks around europe. she reads by the sea, leaves books on hotel nightstands and comes home with a suitcase full of novels and boarding passes tucked between the pages.

instead, i own a kindle.

and while it may not be as photogenic, it is lighter, smaller, more practical and objectively superior in almost every way. i hate to admit it, but this is one battle where aesthetics lost.

my compromise? i bring only one paperback book with me for the vibes and as a reminder of the trip. this year, i’m thinking travels with epicurus.

sarongs

forget resort wear, sarongs will be your best friend. and please, do not spend $200 on a branded one. it’s not that deep.

just go to a vintage store or your local op shop instead. there are plenty sitting there waiting for someone to finally take them to europe.

if you’re desperate to be fashionable at all times, simply learn a few different ways to wrap one around your body and you’re good to go for a casual lunch at a tavern by the sea.

oversized shirts

if there is one thing i’ve been loyal to for years, it’s my oversized baby blue and white shirts. i throw them over bikinis, tanks, activewear, shorts, dresses — literally anything (proof above).

part of it is aesthetic, part of it is practicality. they make every outfit look cooler, protect my shoulders and arms from the sun, and save me from having to reapply sunscreen every thirty minutes, which i absolutely cannot be bothered doing.

the trick is not to pack interesting, trendy clothes. it’s to pack basic items and make them interesting. slip dresses, tank tops, tube tops, mini skirts and halter tops are the backbone of my euro summer wardrobe. the accessories do the rest. a shell or beaded necklace here, chunky earrings there, sunglasses, a colourful sarong — suddenly the exact same outfit looks completely different. that’s how you pack lighter and still feel like you have options.

dua lipa's outfit in palermo is a perfect example. i saw those photos and immediately ordered a black strapless top. even though mine is nowhere near as fabulous as her miu miu ones, it does the job.

as i explore and write for substack, i’ve realised i’m a very methodical writer. i love making lists, following a structure and sharing knowledge and advice. i’m sure you can tell by now, i’m not a literary genius — but i focus on making my guides and how-to’s as personal, intentional and reader-friendly as possible.

i’m a fully self-made happy woman, and one of the reasons i spend my time writing is because i want to let you in — and hopefully show you that if i could build this life for myself, you can too.

and i have the audacity to think you’ll want in — not because i’m some superior being, but because i’m comfortable in my skin.

while brainstorming for this article, i thought: what’s more personal than sharing my exact routine? my own habits, rituals and day-to-day life — things that shape the way i live and the woman i’m growing into.

the objective is simple: to share the habits that helped me build a happy and healthy life.

i turned my life around and have it very much together. more importantly, i became someone i genuinely love. i look at myself in the mirror and see a confident, beautiful woman i carefully nurtured over time. i journal morning and night, and many of those entries end with affirmations like “i’m in awe of myself” or “i’m proud of the woman i’ve become.”

and this is the exact recipe that got me here.

things to note: i’m a single, child-free woman, and i live alone (with my cat!) and work a hybrid nine-to-five. while i truly believe all of these habits are beneficial and rewarding, this exact routine might not be suitable for every lifestyle depending on your responsibilities, obligations or work setup <3

i love curating my space for these sessions as much as i love curating these lists. i feel like i can’t start until the scene is set.

today is a rainy day in melbourne, so i didn’t need to do much to reach the ‘hygge’ state. all i had to do was light my diptyque tubéreuse candle, freshly purchased from , and play a frank ocean album in the background — soft enough to fade into my living room.

it really adds to the ambience that my cat chai and i are sharing a blanket i inherited from my friend elena when she moved to europe. i can tell he’s enjoying the environment i’ve created just as much as i am.

i’m a multifaceted woman. i can talk about almost anything (maybe not crypto) and i approach life the same way. i invest in my looks and my intellect equally. looking put together makes me feel just as good as feeling smart. most importantly, i own it.

blushed cheeks and glowing skin contribute to my confidence and wellbeing just as much as career achievements or being valued for my personality.

that’s why i don’t see caring about my appearance too much as a vain thing. as long as i’m getting a positive return, it’s worth my time and money.

i’ll continue to wake up at 6am to show up to my nine to five with glossy hair and a natural glam i’ve perfected over the years — just to sit there and send emails.

this is a classic for a reason. nothing gives me a natural glow like charlotte tilbury flawless filter.

i don’t use foundation in my routine, so this is my holy grail for special occasions — when i want an even skin tone with a glowy finish, without covering too much of my skin.

but, nothing is perfect. the only (and deeply annoying) downside of this product is that the branding on its packaging peels off and sticks to your hands, face, and everything else in your makeup bag.

my tip: scrub off the gilded lettering yourself before you even open it. you’ll thank me for it.

Too Faced Born This Way Ethereal Light Concealer

kosas this, tower 28 that. but no one talks about my beloved too faced ethereal light concealer.

a naturalist’s must-have, this concealer is medium coverage and easy to blend. it does the job of covering my under eyes, redness and blemishes, all at once.

and a little product goes a long way — especially when applied with dua lipa’s makeup artist katie jane hughes’ priming the brush method.

M.A.C. Glow Play Blush in Plush Pepper

we all want the same thing: to have sun-kissed cheeks all year round.

thankfully it’s now a trend, we have many options to achieve the look. but let’s show some love to my day one, from a time when there weren’t many burnt reds around, and i made it my mission to find one.

it doesn’t get any better than this buildable, cushiony cream blush. that’s why it’s my one and only. and honestly, i will never understand why anyone would need multiple blushes anyway.

my advice: find one shade and consistency that works for you and stick with it forever — unless the brand’s product manager wakes up one day and decides to change the formula of your favourite product for no reason.

Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Setting Spray

i have no notes for this setting spray. it’s perfect to a t. locks in the glow and melts my makeup into my skin like no other.

and it’s the perfect reviver for my post-work side quests. a few (sometimes too many) sprays later, my makeup is fresh as a daisy.

and yes, i heard.. urban decay recently reformulated this product, and the reviews aren’t great. but i will give it a fair chance before ruling it out completely. i’ll report back.

another product i was sold on the moment i tried it. just wow. the fine tip, the pigment, the precision — i have no notes. queen of brows has done it again.

this is a recent switch from the anastasia beverly hills brow gel, and i couldn’t be more satisfied.

i have long, thick, bushy eyebrows, so i always went for bigger brushes. i didn’t know a smaller brush could drastically change the way i shape my brows until i tried this one. it’s buildable, precise, and leaves no residue. surely you don’t need anything more from a brow gel.

this might be my best tip for a natural makeup look: use a good brown mascara — even if you have dark features (like me).

i find black mascara too dramatic for an everyday look, and we are after soft glam. don’t worry, a good brown mascara will still give you the definition and length you want — you won’t need to compromise.

ilia limitless lash mascara is that girl. it’s light on the lashes, separates and lengthens beautifully, and somehow never gets crusty. the result is genuinely hard to believe — which is why it’s my number one daytime mascara of all time.

consider this a bonus. it’s everything that the ilia mascara is — but thicker and bolder. i reach for this when i want a more dramatic look.

i’ll be honest, it took me a while to get used to this lip shaper. i knew it wasn’t a traditional lip liner, but i still couldn’t make it work.

until one day i decided to just be reckless with it. i went in without aiming for or expecting precision — and that's exactly when it started working.

the secret: lightly smudge it around your lips without applying pressure. otherwise you get that dark, bold look we‘re not after.

just go around slightly above your lip line, smudge with your fingers, then clean up the edges with a concealer brush. and voila! your lips have been contoured.

rhode Peptide Lip Treatment in Unscented

i love topping off my freshly contoured lips with a clear lip balm — exactly why this lip treatment made the list. it pairs perfectly with the lip shaper and nails that ‘90s look. and it’s a great product to keep things au naturel.

this is the clear lip treatment’s bolder sister. it pairs just as well with the lean lip shaper, but since it’s tinted, it gives you a juicier finish. i reach for this when i want my lips to be the main character.

before rhode arrived in australia, this was, and still is, my go-to. it’s definitely less sticky and more long-lasting. so we can call her the og of lip balms.

over the last decade, melbourne has been named one of the most liveable cities in the world multiple times by various media outlets, and i couldn’t agree more.

i live in this city like i’m on a mission to honour it. every outing becomes an occasion, every meal is indulged, and even a routine coffee run with colleagues sparks joy like it’s the first time.

if it’s now clear how much i love melbourne, here’s the plot twist: i might love sydney even more.

i see it this way: melbourne is platonic love, sydney is romantic.

sydney is one of the most beautiful cities i’ve ever been to and it has as much to offer as melbourne — just with better weather, glorious beaches, and prettier views.

my friends and i like to call it ‘european los angeles’ — which i suppose makes melbourne ‘european new york’.

over the last seven years, i’ve visited sydney countless times and had the time of my life on every single visit — except once, when i thought it was a good idea to go with my now ex for my 30th birthday. but lucky for him, i’ve healed the petty bitch in me — so i’ll leave it at that.

what i can’t deny, though, is the role he played in me planning a solo trip to sydney last april — to overwrite that version of it with a better one, and remember the city as i knew it: sunny, vibrant, coastal, indulgent, and magnetic.

as a seasoned sydney visitor and 21st century hedonist, i’d say i did pretty well.

this guide won’t include any “must-see” attractions or instructions to climb the harbour bridge. i’m sure the internet has that covered and we don’t do that kind of stuff around here.

we eat, we drink, we live like locals.

we walk the streets, we sunbathe by the rockpools, and we lean into the city’s natural rhythm.

this is a guide to blend in with sydneysiders — not just visiting the city, but living it.

it’s the only way i know how to travel — so come with me.

saturday morning

first of all, i’m never in a rush — not even when i only have 48 hours. i always stop by my accommodation first, request early check-in, and rest and freshen up where possible. if i’ve arrived on a friday night, even better.

after many stays, i’ve decided the best area to base yourself is paddington. it’s within walking distance of the city, double bay, and surry hills — and if you like walking, even bondi junction. it’s not too far from the airport either.

if it’s still early in the day, my first stop is always a.p bakery for fuel. it’s a tradition, a ritual. what’s better than a carb-heavy breakfast on a sunny rooftop before heading out for a full day in the city?

if it’s already lunchtime and you’re after something more elevated, bar copains never misses. an intimate, friendly neighbourhood wine bar with excellent food and a rare natural wine selection.

i still think about the bowl of pappardelle al ragù i had there — the kind of dish that brings you back to life.

saturday afternoon

now that you’re properly fuelled, it’s time to explore all the tastefully designed boutiques of high-end australian fashion brands lining glenmore rd in paddington.

honestly, even if fashion isn’t your thing, these boutiques worth visiting for the interiors alone. they’ll make you feel like a judge on an interior design show.

in need of an afternoon pick-me-up already? mecca coffee will be the first shop to welcome you onto this long street — or the last to say goodbye on your way back when you need your batteries recharged.

alternatively — and in my opinion, preferably — you can revive yourself with a cold, crisp beer at this local pub. i love a good pub and a pot of lager (yes, a pot — i’m not your big old uncle sam), especially after a long day of walking. this place spills out onto the street, full of locals soaking up the sunshine — exactly the kind of energy you want to be around.

eventually, though, we call it. back to the hotel to change and freshen up. because, baby, we have a sunset to catch. and in the best location possible.

saturday evening

you’ll hate me for this, but i won’t reveal the name of this spectacular beach that looks like it belongs on a tropical island in this post.

you’re probably thinking: who the hell puts together a guide and withholds a location like this? well, i do. because i promised a local who shared this with me that i wouldn’t spread it widely, and i keep my promises. honestly, can you blame them for wanting to keep it a secret?

i will, however, tell you — on the same condition — if you message me directly. i’m not that horrible, thank you.

reading a book at this secluded, quiet beach as the sun set was when i realised, just eight hours into my solo trip, i was already healed — hence the caption on my instagram post.

all my memories of sydney felt restored. i found myself smiling at the sun, the sea, the locals and their dogs — full of gratitude and a sense of pride.

saturday night

did you think we were done for the day? not yet, darling. we lead a european lifestyle when we travel — 9pm dinners and wine are not only acceptable, but essential.

my choice is 10 william st. they clearly know that ‘the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach’. and the friendly service they provide is just the cherry on top.

dining alone here at the bar, by the open kitchen, i felt so welcomed and at ease. the bartender looking after me couldn’t have been kinder. i still like to believe he gave me extra care because i was dining alone.

given the nature of this trip, i couldn’t help but feel like he’d been sent to restore my faith in humanity — especially in men.

he topped up my wine without me asking, free of charge. when i told him i couldn’t pick between two desserts to finish off, he suggested the apple pie, but made sure to bring me a spoonful of tiramisu so i could try both (brb crying again).

when it was time to pay, he seemed to know i’d leave a generous tip — so he skipped the tip screen before handing me the pos.

when i left 10 williams st, i was happier than ever to be on my own — with the universe showing me its wonders in small gestures like these. and for that, i’ll carry this dining experience with me forever.

as anthony bourdain said, context and memory play powerful roles in all the truly great meals in one’s life.

sunday morning

if i had to choose only one thing to do in sydney, it would be the bondi to coogee coastal walk — and it has to be at sunrise. wake up at 5am if you must, i don’t make the rules (but i do).

early mornings — and the people who embrace them — are my favorite things about sydney. there’s no better way to blend in with locals and tap into their energy than being among them on an early sunday morning.

sure, you can do it later in the day, but i can guarantee, you won’t enjoy it nearly as much. what should feel like a beautiful coastal walk ends up feeling like you’re stuck in a human train.

for the full experience:

leave the earphones behind — hear the waves, the surfers, the birds. say hi and smile at locals.

take your time — this isn’t cardio. it’s a gentle, transformative walk.

breathe deeply — fully immerse yourself in the environment.

pay attention — watch the sun rise. stop often to take it all in.

reward yourself — finish at a café for your first coffee of the day. trust me, it’ll taste better.

if you refuse to wake up early for this walk (boo), at least finish with a cold drink and some oysters at coogee pavilion.

sunday afternoon

yes, i wake up before sunrise and walk 6km, but i’m no superwoman.

after the walk, i head back to my accommodation for a short nap — to recharge and pack my things. it’s the final hours of the trip, and there’s a flight to catch.

but once i check out, i still have one last round of drinks and snacks in me.

and i know exactly where to go.

before we dive into afternoon drinks at continental deli, let’s touch base on solo dining etiquette a little.

first thing you need to know: dining solo isn’t sad, it’s a power move. and in my opinion, it’s best done sitting at the bar.

one, it’s more suitable for solo diners. two, you can make conversation with the bartender and be treated like a vip, if they like you.

many times i’ve been offered those big sicilian olives while they were making martinis or done tequila shots with them, but my best memory is when a bartender handed me marshmallows and a blowtorch, and left me to my own devices to make s’mores at the bar.

at continental deli, the staff were no exception. the moment i walked into this beautifully decorated bistro, they took my luggage and tucked it away — making me forget for a few hours that i was on my way to the airport.

one of them was super friendly and chatty, it was no surprise when he mentioned he was from europe. it takes one to know one.

one or two canned drinks and a phenomenal steak tartare later, i was already on cloud nine before even making it to my flight that evening.

if you’ve made it this far, you’ve probably realised this isn’t a traditional guide. it’s a solo traveller’s story — told through people, places, sunrises and sunsets, and, of course, food and wine.

hopefully, you take this as a sign to start learning to enjoy your life — especially on your own — through indulgence and slow, intentional living.

yes, this guide is about sydney, but it’s also not.

yes, it’s about where i went and what i did — but more than that, it’s about how it felt.

and so far, i’ve been surprisingly successful at defying assumptions i unknowingly made about myself — either based on my past selves or shaped by societal expectations of me as a young woman

i have normalised doing things for the sake of doing them and detached myself from the outcome. and yet, they still prove to be extremely beneficial for my wellbeing and confidence.

i don’t start things to be the best at them. i just want to try and see for myself. i’m not precious about it either. i don’t take myself or my endeavours too seriously. just knowing that i put myself outside of my comfort zone feels like an achievement in itself.

one thing i do know, though, is that i don’t go out looking for these things. everything i’ve started has either come to me naturally or made sense over time. they align with my lifestyle and contribute to the person i’m becoming. none of it feels random. i don’t think i’ll ever wake up one day and decide to start playing the ukulele.

or maybe i will? this newfound sense of ‘i can do anything’ is pretty inspiring.

while the candle tied everything together - visually and scent-wise - i thought there’s no better time to start the post i’ve been wanting to write the most.

these are the softest cotton pads you’ll ever put on your face, and i’m pretty sure i’ve gone through more than 30 boxes over the last couple of years since my friend elena introduced me to them.

use them with your favourite makeup remover or toner and you’ll immediately understand why i buy them in bulk.

Go-To Properly Clean Gentle Mousse Cleanser

let’s be honest. nobody needs a fancy, expensive face wash. we just need a gentle cleanser that won’t strip our skin and does what it’s meant to do: clean.

if you have combination skin just like me — or any type really, you don’t need to look any further than this one.

according to last year’s wrapped, this was my most repurchased product at mecca. need i say more?

Shiseido Benefiance Wrinkle Smoothing Eye Cream

this was an instant yes. i only needed to apply this once to know it’s going to be a staple on my skincare shelf.

i have a soft spot for products that show you their benefits instantly. the way this eye cream coated and sealed my under eyes? no notes. the way it welcomed my concealer? brilliant.

i just know i won’t be looking for another eye cream anytime soon — even though i hate sticking my nails into jars, ugh.

okay okay, i know.. you might be thinking that there’s nothing justifiable about this price, but please believe me when i tell you it’s worth every single penny. i tried so hard to find something more affordable to replace this miracle of a product — nothing works the same.

to make things even more inconvenient, this product is only available at mecca bourke street. so no online purchase either.

luckily, i live a 10-minute walk from the flagship store, but if you need any more convincing to make the trip, let me tell you — this will transform and plump your skin the moment you apply it, and you’ll kiss goodbye patchy makeup forever.

Sunday Riley Vitamin C, Lactic Acid and Retinoid treatments

do i need to say ‘anything sunday riley’ or is it obvious?

honestly, at 32, this trio saved my skin and gave me the best complexion i have ever had. to put it simply:

• c.e.o. brightens the skin and improves uneven skin tone

• good genes eliminates dullness and texture

• a+ works to reverse the signs of ageing as best as it can (we all know by now retinol alone won’t do that, right?)

but let’s talk about the hows and whys.

how did i know what treatments my skin needed?

okay, before you come at me, there’s a reason i wasn’t consistent with my sunscreen use. i just couldn’t find the right one for years. they were either sticky, left a white cast, and most importantly in my case, they kept burning my eyes. i did not enjoy crying on my way to the function every single time, let me tell you that much.

i must have tried every sunscreen on the market (seriously, test me) and they all failed — until i found this gem. with thanks to a mecca skin specialist who saved my face on a random tuesday afternoon.

this product doesn’t burn my eyes (obviously), has a creamy consistency and glowy finish, and is a great makeup base. it might feel “muddy” for some, as it’s not really lotion-like and you have to work it into your skin for some time. but the result? flawless.

since i purchased this product late last year, i haven’t skipped a day — go me!

rhode Glazing Mist Hydrating Face Spray & Mario Badescu Facial Spray

who doesn’t love extra hydration and glow? personally, i’m a bit too concerned about my makeup sitting right, and i’d rather take a bullet than go out with a cakey, flaky and dry finish.

that’s when these two come super handy. i mostly use them to rehydrate my damp sponge before i start blending my concealer and blush.

they both work well, so if you prefer an affordable option over the aesthetically pleasing one, i’ve got you covered.

LOOPS, rhode and Summer Fridays eye patches

finishing off strong. the three eye patches i alternate between — and for good reason: they’re here to stay. go clean your house or do reformer pilates with them on. they’re not going anywhere.

and on top of that? they visibly improve your under eyes the moment you take them off. ready for your concealer to finally sit the way it’s supposed to.

i save them for special occasions or self-care days, when i want that extra boost.

Kitsch Recycled Plastic Facial Dermaplaners

i use these to remove unwanted hair on my upper lip and around my eyebrows, rather than shaving my entire face. that said, i have nothing against it. plenty of people swear by it for smoother skin, and no, your facial hair won’t grow back thicker.

about once a month, i’ll generously oil my face (important) and tidy up any areas that need it for a cleaner and brighter look.

this is by far the gentlest method i’ve found, especially if you’re using acids or retinol. the last thing sensitive skin needs is waxing or aggressive threading. consider this recommendation tested and approved by yours truly.
