It’s time for the pedal to meet the metal! Primary season is essentially done, and we are ready to get to work on winning the midterms by laser-focusing on candidates who align with our values and have an actual shot at winning their seats. All props to Force Multiplier and Focus 4 Democracy for their rigorous research into the viability of candidates whose elections have the most impact and offer the most bang for our donation dollars.

While initially, all sites were set on winning the House, the increased odds of a Blue Wave November 3^rd make a Senate flip potentially within reach. That said, the 4 most competitive seats are: Michigan, Georgia, (both to be defended), North Carolina and Maine, (purple, leaning blue). If we win those races, we still need 2 deep red states to turn blue, and the likeliest prospects are Alaska, Nebraska and Iowa. Texas and Ohio are strong possibilities, too, But the popular strategy now is to put energy and money into the smaller market states where we need to convince fewer voters; in other words, where our dollars can actually translate into votes

Our #1 recommendation is to consult Force Multiplier to find the House and Senate candidates who have the best shot at holding onto or flipping their seats and donate accordingly. Meanwhile, we are urging all concerned democracy-lovers to find their most comfortable level of participation in support of the following Senatorial hopefuls:

While there is an optimistic 71% chance of a Blue Wave, we all know the fight is never done when battling the shenanigans and outright illegal plans of MAGA maniacs. Now is the time to leap outside our comfort zones and show up for democracy.

It may be our last shot!

• Nationally, Common Cause has a vital election protection volunteer program. State-by-state, they place trained poll monitors at polling places, especially in communities with a history of voting problems, where hotly-contested races exacerbate the chance of long lines, confusion, and other complications.

Donate to Election Protection Funds: With all the threats the Trump Administration being hurled at our fair, free and democratic elections, it is vital to support these organizations.

About Sisters In Outrage

Drive about two hours northeast of Los Angeles into the desolate scrub of the Mojave, and you will find Adelanto, “The City With Unlimited Possibilities” according to the welcome sign. I have only spent seven hours there, but it would appear the motto is apt only if it applies to Cannabis and Corrections opportunities. Even then, the “unlimited” might be a stretch.

Especially if you are detained in the GEO ICE Processing Center where your opportunities are distinctly limited.

I was fortunate to be included in a small band of women visiting through the auspices of AVAN, the Adelanto Visitation and Advocacy Network, last week. AVAN is part of a coalition that includes Freedom For Immigrants and CLUE Justice, a group with whom I have worked observing at Immigration Court, posting bond at the ICE office and holding vigils outside the detention center downtown. My horror at the relentless disgrace of this regime’s abuse of immigrant’s rights has ignited a commitment to bear witness and reassure the victims of Stephen Miller’s hateful agenda that they have not been forgotten. And just as importantly, ICE needs to know we are watching. That spark led me to AVAN’s Zoom training and clearance to show up.

My visit came on the heels of a July 16^th judgment against the facility that demanded immediate reforms to overhaul the claimed conditions of constitutional and disability rights violations there. It required, among other specific changes: 24-hour availability of potable drinking water, nutritious and sanitary meals containing sufficient calories, daily cleaning and mold remediation as well as 4-hour daily outdoor access.

Having seen all the trauma related to government representatives’ attempts to monitor detention centers around the country, I was surprised to find that as long as I had the names and inmate IDs, (a.k.a. “A numbers”), of a few detainees and a Real ID, I was admitted for hour-long visitation with “a friend”. I guess I wasn’t enough of a threat since I was seeing only the gleaming linoleum of the lobby and visitation rooms, not the living quarters.

Guards with holsters anchoring their nylon uniforms, sporting elaborate acrylic nails and inch-long false eyelashes ushered me into a locked ante-room and then buzzed me through.

I think I expected to be horrified by the physical conditions of the place and the detainees, but it was the gradual, layered recognition of the mental cruelty that most chilled me.

The two men I met had not been allowed outside for 5 weeks after an attempted escape by someone. The only other exercise option was a single basketball hoop for half of the entire West Wing population of 1600 men.

One of the men reported having waited over a year for much-needed knee surgery and been brought back a day later with some Tylenol and no after-care physical therapy provided. He was lucky a visitor had mailed him some rehab exercises that had helped. Getting any medical attention takes so long, people usually just wait out their symptoms before being seen.

There are no masks or sanitizers available until officials come for inspection.

One man suffered from serious sleep deprivation because the lights are turned off only between 1 and 4 a.m.

Beans and rice, I was told, are served at every meal with fruit distributed only to diabetics. Water is available, but the cups are moldy.

Of the two men and one woman I met, only one had had a visitor. Families and friends were either in another state, unable to find transportation to the middle of nowhere or afraid to show up for fear of being detained themselves. A priest had been there once at Christmas.

There is TV, but that day, a guard had left at the end of his shift with the remote in his pocket…. inadvertently or not.

The library offers the only mental stimulation. There are no cards or board games.

The law library’s books are too out of date to be of help. And two of the three people I talked to had no idea what to even research having no lawyers or understanding of what their options or timelines were.

And then there were the trivial “fuck you’s”. We were kept waiting for our first visitation at the Women’s Wing so long that when we came out and requested our second, it was “too late” to start another one. We were told that one man we asked to see was unavailable that day, but when we pushed back, the guard found that he could be seen, but only if we waited 3 hours. We did.

When allowed into the Men’s visitation room, wives rushed to their mates and embraced them hungrily, only to be reprimanded for the “inappropriate touching.”

Each of the people with whom I met told me they’d been encouraged to self-deport; promised, (allegedly falsely), air fare and money to leave. Each one refused, being less afraid of the Hell they’re living than the unknown of a third country to which they’d be sent.

The light bulb immediately burned bright for me: the Trump Reich is not, in fact, interested in getting “illegals” out of the country. They are all in on making money off their suffering.

o 3 billion dollars in Federal contracts have flowed into ICE services in California alone.*

o Private detention centers like GEO have cleared one hundred and 33 million dollars in profit here.*

o 52 of the seven thousand detainees in this state have died in detention or custody.*

Laws have been passed, court judgments have been handed down and yet, nothing seems to have changed at Adelanto. At a gathering after my visit, I talked to a very sympathetic State Senator who had achieved impressive immigration protection legislation and told her about the lack of implementation. She deflected by saying enforcement isn’t in her purview, and of course, that’s true.

It left me discouraged by our inability to fight back effectively against the systematic cruelty of the Trump regime. Their M.O. is to ignore, hamstring and wait out opposition, so they accomplish at least half of their intended agenda before anyone physically stops them.

It’s a massively daunting obstacle for we humane, democracy-loving citizens, but it’s clearer than ever that we can never stop fighting.

As I left my last visitation, it felt so paltry to have nothing to offer except to put my hands over my heart and say, “I apologize for our government.”

The stunningly gracious detainee replied, “I know.”

Dear Fellow Resisters,

Sisters in Outrage was officially launched one year ago. Seventeen monthly Digests of Actions, a plethora of Action Needed Bulletins, well-attended postcarding parties, and valuable alliances and actions with fellow resistance organizations followed. From marches to boycotts to Immigration Court observation to Visibility Brigade to Force Multiplier Zooms to prayer vigils to poll-watching, we’ve been there. What a year it’s been. Yay, all of us!

As we reflect on the journey we started a year ago, we’ve gained insight into the resistance movement as a whole, and we are abundantly aware of the incredibly vast, diverse and committed community we’ve joined. Organizations approaching this work from legal, political, and spiritual groundings are pulling together to speak with clarity and strength against the authoritarianism of Trump’s regime. The movement is empowering all of us to show up in every way we can.

Preserving Democracy and protecting the most vulnerable among us is a monumental calling, and it can feel really daunting, until you look around and see the grassroots work being done by groups as local as Hang Out Do Good, as city-focused as CLUE, as state-wide as LA Voice and as nationally recognized as Indivisible, No Kings, Swing Left or Visibility Brigade and more. We are all in this together, creating community and speaking truth to power. It’s a long haul. It requires patience. But mostly, it asks us for our moral conviction. And our heart.

Thank you all for bringing both to this crucial work with us!

Let’s celebrate all that has been accomplished by focusing on what seeds still need planting and what actions still need taking together to end the Trump Regime for good.

GETTING OUT THE VOTE

Democrats must win by an overwhelming majority in November so the legitimacy of the midterms cannot be questioned. These actions are as relevant as ever.

Postcarding

We’ve said it before, and we’ll continue to say it again… postcards to encourage registration and voting in an upcoming election helps to win in tight election races. So, say the statistics and excerpts from a report by the Rachel Carson Council Advocacy Guide that clarifies the significance of postcarding: “There’s something to be said for holding a handwritten, physical postcard someone took the time to write to you… That’s why we’re sharing one of the most effective human-to-human voting appeal methods out there: postcarding. Postcards have a small but statistically significant impact on voter turnout. In Pennsylvania, for example, a postcarding campaign of 2.2 million cards yielded a 1% boost in voter registration.That doesn’t sound like a lot, but it amounted to 23,000 new registrants in a swing state determined by only 45,000 votes in 2016. Plus, postcarding works on young people: it raised voter registration by 2% among 18-to-21-year-olds in the campaign above…”

The mid-terms are coming into focus, and the heat is on to get out the left-wing vote. Through our relationships with Force Multiplier and Focus For Democracy, Sisters in Outrage will be able to guide our participation in the most targeted and effective ways. We will recommend specific races that need an extra push as the elections draw closer and organizations that offer the most bang for our donation bucks.

Voter outreach is Job #1! Getting people registered and making sure they are informed is the priority. We have talked about and promoted groups who sponsor canvassing, phone banking and postcarding: Indivisible, Swing Left, Grassroots Democrats HQ, Field Team 6 and the like, but there are other strategic efforts being undertaken that deserve our attention. Movement Labs, Project Bullhorn and Civitech are a few leading the drive to engage the most persuadable voters.

Given that 78% of 18-29-year-olds and 64% of 30-49s are getting their news and information from social media, the focus must pivot from advertising to embedding. Conservatives have drowned out the liberals in the social media sphere by reaching 3-4 times as many young voters through TikTok, podcasts, Instagram, etc. And the cost is 100^th less. We encourage you to check out the above-mentioned organizations, some of whom have volunteer opportunities as well as donation needs. Their quantifiable effectiveness is truly impressive.

Shifting to Election Infrastructure: As crucial as is our voting in a Blue Wave this Fall, we are aware that lasting change takes more than one election. More and more the focus is shifting to election infrastructure; creating a firewall to protect our voting rights and maintain a free and fair system for the future. And quite often that means strategic actions at the state and local levels.

Remember, states control elections, and election officials and judges who decide redistricting cases are sometimes elected and sometimes appointed by state governors or local boards. Consider this: If just one more Virginia House Delegate had been a Democrat, the Virginia Supreme Court would be split 5-4 Democratic instead of the current 5-4 Republican bench that threw out the voter- approved redistricting plan that would have given Dems 4 new House seats.

Prioritizing State & Local Elections: Let’s face it, we all know how challenging ’28 promises to be. Focusing efforts and funds on the state and local levels is our best hope for flipping Congressional seats now and safeguarding the mechanics of voting beyond this election cycle. Organizations like States Project, State + Local Election Alliance and NOPE Neighbors are specifically targeting state legislators who are essential to the way maps are drawn and rights are protected. And they maintain relationships beyond the immediate crises, working to keep their network in place and up to the task of facing down minority lawmakers attempting to gerrymander and restrict votes.

It’s exciting to discover all these dedicated democracy defenders and support intelligent, data-driven endeavors. Unlike the days when we all contributed to Amy McGrath because we hated Mitch McConnell so much, these programs help us give strategically and smartly. Hallelujah!

By the time this posts, the dust will have settled in most of the election arenas. For us, here in Los Angeles, Swalwell’s demise turned our gubernatorial contest into a high school wrestling match. Never have so many of us had such difficulty choosing a candidate.

But, that was the least of our political concerns. The blundered Iran “excursion”, the DOJ slush fund to subsidize criminals, the Christian Nationalist Palooza on the mall weren’t even the worst of it. The soul-crushing and despicable Supreme Court gut of the Voting Rights Act, and Republicans’ vulturous swoop in to capitalize on it has thrown our hopes for democracy’s redemption for a loop. We’re heart-broken. And exhausted.

So, for the next two weeks, we are calling a moratorium on the drain of political discourse. Turn off CNN! Read a novel instead of Heather Cox Richardson! Don’t touch Meidas’, Instagram, FB! Take a fucking breath and love yourself and your peeps, and revel in how fortunate our lives still are. For now…

Consider taking these recommended actions starting today. Interpret and adapt at will but first and foremost give yourself a break because Trump isn’t going to!

· Increase the amount of time you spend stopping to smell the roses, chilling on the sofa enjoying your own company, finding a spot outside to simply watch the clouds float by in the sky or staring out the window daydreaming.

· Binge a movie …or several: “Remarkably Bright Creatures” with Sally Field for warmth and comfort, “Barefoot in the Park” with Jane Fonda and Robert Redford for a ton of laughs, “She Said” for a true story where good wins over evil. And for inspiration & perspective watch the documentary about Martin Short, “Marty, Life is Short”.

· Take a nap…or 2.

· Spend more time enjoying a place that brings you serenity like a beautiful park or garden, a museum, walking a tree lined street or enjoy window shopping…no purchase necessary.

· Chatty cozy coffee shops are popping up everywhere so meet up with a friend for a latte and a lovely conversation or just enjoy people watching.

· Take a day trip preferably with a travel time of under 2 hours.

· Pig out on your favorite ice cream or non-dairy frozen dessert.

· Enjoy a nice long good old-fashioned phone call with a dear friend you’ve been meaning to call but have been too worn down at the end of the day to do it.

· Treat yourself to a little self-care like a mani/ pedi!

The number of ways this administration has found to inflict pain on its citizenry and across the world seems boundless. But so is our energy to fight back! As tempting as it may be to gloat over Trump’s colossal failures, (I’m looking at you, Strait of Hormuz!) our conscientious resistance work is far from done. The first order of business this month is the call to mobilize for May Day Strong, a national day of action.

May Day Strong Friday May 1^st

We posted our Digest early to include this reminder that May Day Strong actions will be taking place this week all across the nation and it will be even stronger than 2025. A broad coalition of community groups and union members have joined forces to honor workers from all sectors, trades and crafts. They are asking all sympathizers to show solidarity by doing No Work, No School and No Shopping that day.

We encourage everyone to find a May Day Strong action in their community. The more often we show up in large numbers, the less the opposition can be ignored. And in Los Angeles, you will find the Sisters rallying and marching for May Day Strong at MacArthur Park at 10 AM-3PM on May 1st.

Angelenos Please Vote YES on Ballot Measure ER!

The ballots for the June 2^nd Elections in the state of California will start going out May 4^th so they are a hair’s breadth away with many Californians returning in their mail-in ballot in May! So as confusing and crowded as the Democratic primary for CA Governor is for Californians and the LA Mayor’s race is for Angelenos (yes, we are still trying to get a clearer picture on both) the number 1 priority is to use your voice and VOTE.

Sisters in Outrage will be watching as things progress in both races and hope to have endorsements soon. In the meantime, we wholeheartedly endorse, along with a coalition of hospitals, community clinics, labor organizations, doctors, nurses and community leaders, Los Angeles County Ballot Measure ER. We urge you to Vote YES on Ballot Measure ER which will claw back the essential and vital medical services gutted by the Big Billionaire Bill.

The Best Bang for Your Buck

Of course, even more important than a single day of resistance is the momentum we’re building for the mid-term elections. More and more at political events and gatherings, the conversation is turning toward the most strategic and efficient use of our donation dollars this season. There is a growing sense that giving to grass roots organizations may give the most bang for the buck, from expanding outreach for a network of independent news sources through Courier Newsroom to the Rural Voices Project, connecting with and amplifying the voices of small communities hurt by recent budget cuts and policies, there are a myriad of ways to help turn the tide.

We Sisters have found a fabulous resource for supporting groups like these as well as funneling funding to candidates for whom donations can actually result in a win. Force Multiplier Commons is an all-volunteer group that does the research and crunches the numbers to advise us on the best use of our political capital.

Other Opportunities for Engagement in May include:

• May 7^th The Annual LA Voice fundraiser, Voice Raise: Move, Move, Move is a joyful and inspiring evening shared with a diverse and committed community in support of LA Voice’s vital and powerful work in Los Angeles. You might just find the Sisters there.

• Take Action with Field Team 6: The clock is ticking on the mid-term elections and Field Team 6 is the place to turn with their in person Voter Drives all across the US, Free Textbanking, and Postcarding Resources. Their volunteer opportunities in support of Democracy are also endorsed by Meidas Touch and The Union. That’s a resounding recommendation.

• Protests & Rallies Still Abound! With new and existing resistance groups popping up with new opportunities to take action on your feet, Mobilize or Indivisible make it easy to find a group or an event right for you in your neck of the woods.

Contact Your Congress on Important Issues

When it comes to contacting your representatives, remember staffers do keep count of how many constituents are for or against various issues so you’re call or email counts. The main U.S. Capitol switchboard phone number is (202) 224-3121. The operator can connect you directly. To find your specific representative, you can also look up their contact information on www.house.gov or www.senate.gov. With that in mind here are a few suggestions worth your time and energy.

• No War with Iran

  As the debacle continues with the war that Trump launched against Iran without Congressional Approval or a plan we must continue to tell Congress NO WAR WITH IRAN

• No To Warrantless AI Mass Surveillance

  The counterterrorism measure passed in 2008 has gone unchecked with a history of abuse from the government. It’s time for Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to be overhauled or stopped.

• Stop Voter Suppression

  The U.S. Senate is stalled and has not passed the SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) Act yet. So, keeping the pressure on our Senators is critical to stopping the voter suppression that will run rampant in this country during the November midterms. Help stop the SAVE Act by Calling your Senator!

The drumbeat of criminal behavior from the current administration threatens our sanity daily. As one politician put it: “It’s like a Watergate every day.” Of course, we will continue to raise our voices and put our best efforts toward winning back the House this Fall, but sometimes protests, whistle-blowing in Home Depot parking lots and calls to our representatives just don’t feel like enough. What can we do right now that will make a difference and restore some of what Trump and his Big Billionaire’s Bill has stolen from us?

Here’s What You Can Do Californians:

Vote Yes in June on the Essential Services Restoration Act in June

Finally, something tangible to get behind that will have an immediate positive, effect on LA County! The Board of Supervisors wisely listened to a coalition of healthcare providers and community organizations and put this bill on the June ballot; just in time to blunt the healthcare cuts scheduled to begin in July. The act proposes a temporary one-half cent sales tax to stave off the loss of $2 billion in LA County health services. That loss would mean the potential closure of four public hospitals and the 24 community clinics upon which 2 million of us rely for care. It would throw over a million Angelenos off Medi-Cal. Thousands of healthcare workers would be out of work. The ripple effects are equally gruesome: over-crowded Emergency Rooms and longer wait times, plus higher premiums and larger deductibles for the middle and working classes.

The Essential Services Restoration Act would include an oversight board to monitor all spending, and it would sunset in 2028. Desperate times call for desperate measures, as we realized with Prop 50. Opportunities to push back significantly against the devastation Trump has wrought have been hard to come by, but we can put our backs into passing this bill and say we were undaunted and able to rise higher than the small minds that try to take us down. We are not victims!

Here’s What You Can Do Nationally:

• Midterms Still Front & Center

If you are of the postcarding and text banking persuasions, there is a very significant redistricting vote happening in just a few weeks in Virginia on April 21^st which could use our support. If it passes, we will pick up 4 House seats, and those new districts will remain blue through the next two election cycles. Donate at Virginians for Fair Elections or postcard through Activate America.

As promised, we are formulating endorsements and actions for the mid-terms, so be on the lookout for an invitation to Zoom with us and Force Multiplier who will guide us to the best, most effective use of our political capital.

• Stop the SAVE Act

And one more election reminder: call or write your representatives to Vote No on The SAVE Act ASAP! Voter suppression is a perversion of our founding ideals!!

• As we bask in the triumphant and historic No Kings 3 with over 8 million Americans hitting the streets, participating organizers of that remarkable day are continuing the fight with May Day Strong on May 1^st. The avalanche of chaotic, catastrophic churn coming out of this White House threatens to bury us all, but we crusaders for decency and democracy are undeterred. Inspired by the courageous push back in Minneapolis, the Supreme Court’s upholding of restraints on executive power and the daily drip of Epstein-enablers losing their sheen, we are doubling down.

The regime is leaking support, and we must pull out all stops to capitalize on their weaknesses. The mid-term elections are front and center for us this season, and as candidates are established and races heat up, we will be making endorsements. But, for now, we are focusing on electoral infrastructure that will reinforce and aid the Blue Wave we see coming.

There are exemplary behind the scenes organizations we encourage you to explore this election season.

• · CiviTech is a leading political technology startup for Democratic and progressive movements, helping to identify and mobilize unregistered voters.

• · The Civics Center is on a mission to make voter registration part of every high school campus in America. 4 million Americans turn 18 every year, but fewer than 30% are registered to vote. Preregister teens in high school and you will increase voter turnout in youth.

• · HeadCount makes voter registration for new and young voters easy by coordinating with music venues and artists like Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish and loads of other headliners to incentivize and actualize registration at their concerts.

• · Field Team 6 is a volunteer army doing partisan voter registration on a large scale. Their mission is to save the world by registering Democrats.

• · Force Multiplier is an all-volunteer organizations that does all the legwork identifying the Democratic candidates with the highest likelihood of success in the most closely-contested swing states, so no one has to waste their donations on unwinnable races.

• · State + Local Election Alliance monitors and invests in the often over-looked state and local elections that determine voter access and election administration. They strategically target battleground contests in swing districts to fully maximize their impact. Democracy is decided at the state and local level.

Join LA Voice to picket Home Depot this coming Sunday February 22nd in Pasadena, Hollywood and Long Beach.  Home Depot has been shockingly and cruelly silent while immigration raids take place on their property.  FYI: Our very own Sister, Molly Cheek, will be helping to lead the Home Depot Boycott Action in Pasadena. Picket and talk to consumers about joining the boycott of Home Depot.

When the masses work together to slow the money stream the heads of companies take notice.

There is no doubt that the new beefed up SAVE Act is voter suppression legislation at its worst! Time is of the essence since the Senate is set to vote next week. The SAVE Act must be stopped! So, take Action now!

Thanks to Trump’s Big Brutal Bill, Los Angeles County stands to lose $2.4 billion in healthcare subsidies, and 3.3 million residents could lose access to critical health care services over the next 3 years. The Essential Healthcare Restoration Act would fill the gaps Trump has created, but it needs to get on the ballot first.

Before Monday February 9th 4pm, go to County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors to register your support of our Board of Supervisors voting to include this proposal on the June ballot. Time is of the essence to show that Angelenos will not sit idly by while Republicans continue to decimate our communities. Act before the February 9th at 4pm and spread the word!

We all know that one of the keys to reclaiming the House and Senate is getting younger potential voters onboard. Just getting them registered increases their likelihood of election participation dramatically. And if we can figure out how to engage them effectively, we are unleashing some big power. To that end, we’ve come up with a doable and maybe even fun challenge: choose three Gen X, Gen Z and/or Millenials and pose the following 4 questions to them:

o Are you registered to vote? (Why or why not?)

o Where do you get your news?

o What are your top three concerns?

o Do you think individuals can make a difference?

The watchword is listening. We really want to know where they are. So, if you’re up to the assignment, let us know and share the responses you get. Of course, we cannot ignore the horrors of the last few weeks. There are no words to express the depth of our outrage from the murderous actions of ICE in Minneapolis and the callous responses by ICE and the Trump MAGA Administration. However, collectively the American people, a vast array of resistance organizations along with countless journalists have stood up, each in their own way, to bear witness, support and honor all those who are suffering at the hands of ICE with action.
