How much of someone should you have to accept in the name of love?

There’s something intoxicating about the beginning of a relationship. In those first few weeks or months, even the things that would normally drive you insane can somehow become charming. He’s always late? He’s spontaneous. He takes up the entire bed? He’s cuddly. He works completely opposite hours? Mysterious! Exciting!

And then eventually, reality moves in.

Suddenly the quirks aren’t quite as cute. You start noticing the habits you’d like to tweak, the routines you’d like to rearrange, and the little things you swore didn’t bother you that absolutely, positively bother you.

Which brings us to one of the oldest relationship questions in the book. Can people actually change?

Or maybe more importantly, should we expect them to?

Old Dogs, New Dicks takes that question quite literally. Carrie wants Big to change his wandering eye. Miranda wants Steve to change his schedule. Charlotte’s new boyfriend goes so far as to surgically change a part of himself for her. And somehow, by the end of the episode, the woman who changes the most isn’t any of the men.

Carrie begins by reminding us that New York has some of the most beautiful women in the world. Which might explain why the men of Manhattan can’t seem to stop looking at them.

We watch men stare as women pass, including one so distracted he nearly gets hit by a car.

Then we see Big.

He’s walking beside Carrie when another beautiful woman passes, and there goes his head.

Carrie notices.

Of course she notices.

Later, walking through the park with Samantha and eating pretzels, she complains about Big’s wandering eye. Samantha thinks Carrie should consider herself lucky if this is the biggest problem they have.

Men look.

According to Samantha, it’s practically genetic.

“You have to take Big for how he is.”

Carrie isn’t convinced. She doesn’t want a complete renovation. She’s just looking for a few alterations.

Samantha warns her to be careful.

“You pull the wrong thread, everything falls apart.”

And really, that becomes the question hanging over the entire episode. How much can you alter someone before they stop being the person you wanted in the first place?

Miranda, meanwhile, doesn’t necessarily want to change Steve. She’d simply like him to exist within normal waking hours.

Their relationship is going wonderfully, except for one small problem. Steve is a bartender and Miranda is a lawyer. He finishes work when she’s supposed to be sleeping, and she starts work when he’d prefer to stay in bed.

One night he arrives at her apartment after two in the morning, apologizing because some bankers kept the bar open late. Miranda can barely keep her eyes open. By the time Steve starts asking about her day, she’s already asleep beside him.

The next morning, her alarm goes off and Miranda immediately jumps into work mode.

Steve pulls her back into bed.

Miranda has absolutely no interest in lingering. Her mornings have a system, and that system does not involve leisurely cuddling. As Carrie puts it, the only thing Miranda likes inside her in the morning is a cup of takeout coffee on her way to the subway.

Charlotte is experiencing an entirely different kind of surprise.

She’s been dating Mike, a restaurant critic, and things are going well enough that she finally decides it’s time to sleep together.

Then he tells her…

He’s uncircumcised.

Charlotte stares.

Mike asks if it’s okay.

Charlotte, attempting to recover, insists that of course it is.

At lunch, however, she tells the girls the truth.

“There was so much skin.”

Carrie can’t believe Charlotte has never seen an uncircumcised man before.

“I’m from Connecticut.”

Naturally.

The table immediately becomes a debate. Samantha is enthusiastically pro. Miranda prefers knowing exactly what she’s getting. Carrie points out that globally, Charlotte’s reaction is probably the unusual one.

Miranda realizes this means she’s apparently slept with a very small percentage of the world’s available population.

Carrie smiles.

“You’re like a virgin.”

While Charlotte is worrying about what’s underneath the clothes, Carrie’s frustrations with Big are starting to pile up.

At dinner, Carrie is telling him a story when a beautiful hostess walks past. Big’s attention immediately follows her.

Carrie notices.

Again.

Then Big lights a cigar.

When the server politely tells him smoking isn’t allowed, Big decides to make a production out of it. He asks the surrounding tables whether anyone minds, offers to buy drinks, and essentially charms the room into letting him do exactly what he wanted to do anyway.

Carrie watches the whole performance with growing irritation.

He’s arrogant.

He knows he’s arrogant.

And when she calls him on it, he looks almost amused.

“I thought that’s what you liked about me.”

That’s the problem, isn’t it?

Sometimes the exact quality that attracts you to someone eventually becomes the thing that makes you crazy.

Walking home, another beautiful woman gets out of a cab.

Big looks.

Carrie physically grabs his face.

“Hey.”

Then she tells him she hates the cigar.

Big throws it away.

One problem solved.

Approximately seventeen others remain.

Back at her apartment, Carrie starts wondering about New Yorkers and their obsession with reinvention. They change hairstyles, politics, neighborhoods, careers, friends. If change comes so easily everywhere else, why is changing another person nearly impossible?

“Do I have to change my expectations, or can you change a man?”

Charlotte is about to find out.

Walking home after dinner with Mike, she starts making excuses when he asks to come upstairs. He immediately knows why.

She’s not the first woman who’s reacted badly to him being uncircumcised.

Then he tells her he’s decided to have the procedure.

Charlotte is stunned.

He wants to feel confident making love, and to Charlotte, the gesture feels incredibly romantic. Here is a man literally willing to change himself.

Problem solved.

Or so she thinks.

Miranda’s negotiations with Steve aren’t going nearly as smoothly.

One morning, Steve wants to cuddle.

Miranda wants a timeframe.

“Thirty minutes?”

Steve can’t believe she’s scheduling cuddling.

Miranda can’t believe anyone wouldn’t.

Saturday is her free day. She has spinning, nails, dry cleaning. There is an order to things.

Steve tells her she has too many limits.

Miranda climbs back into bed anyway.

Twelve hours later, she finally gets to work.

At drag queen bingo that night, the girls compare notes.

Miranda admits she really likes Steve, but the morning routine is killing her.

Charlotte thinks she’s insane. Everyone wants a man who wants to cuddle.

Carrie is almost jealous.

Big won’t even spend the night at her apartment.

Miranda missed spinning because she spent the entire day horizontal.

And suddenly Carrie finds herself firmly on Miranda’s side.

Why are women always expected to change their routines for men?

Charlotte argues women are simply more adaptable.

Samantha, naturally, is mostly interested in discussing morning sex.

Then Charlotte announces Mike is getting circumcised.

Everyone stops.

Carrie has only one question.

“Please tell me we’re not invited.”

Before they can unpack that particular development, Samantha recognizes one of the drag performers.

It’s Brad, a hockey player she dated years earlier.

Only now Brad is performing as Samantha.

The resemblance isn’t exactly accidental.

“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”

Apparently Samantha Jones didn’t just leave an impression. She inspired an entire persona.

Carrie’s evening with Big isn’t nearly as flattering.

She’s standing in the lobby of his building waiting for him.

And waiting.

And waiting.

Thirty minutes later, he finally arrives.

She’s furious.

Carrie says his doorman probably thinks she’s a hooker.

She hates waiting in his lobby. Big suggests she wait at the coffee shop around the corner next time.

That’s when Carrie finally says it.

“If you gave me a key, I could wait upstairs.”

Big looks at her.

“A key?”

She keeps going.

Maybe he could stay at her apartment sometimes too.

Big says he likes his bed.

They head upstairs, but something has shifted.

That night they lie beside each other without having sex. Carrie starts wondering if this is all she’s ever going to get. His apartment. His bed. His schedule. His rules.

Then, at three in the morning, Big rolls over and knocks Carrie straight out of bed.

She jumps up and punches him in the face.

Not exactly the mature communication strategy most relationship therapists would recommend.

Big is understandably furious.

Carrie apologizes, but he grabs a pillow and blanket and heads for the couch, telling “Sugar Ray” she can have the bed.

Neither of them sleeps.

Around four in the morning, Carrie finds him with an ice pack and finally says everything she probably should’ve said before throwing the punch.

It wasn’t about the cigar.

It wasn’t even really about him looking at other women.

She hates that she doesn’t have a key. She hates that he never stays at her apartment. She hates feeling like there’s no room for her in his bed or, more importantly, his life.

And then she admits the thing she’s been afraid to say.

“I feel like I’m back in your life and nothing has really changed.”

She knows she can’t fundamentally change Big.

She isn’t asking him to become someone else.

She just wants something to change a little bit for her.

Big listens.

Then, perfectly deadpan, reminds her that physical violence is never the answer.

Carrie leaves.

Charlotte, on the other hand, is eagerly awaiting Mike’s grand unveiling.

His procedure is complete, although he describes the pain as roughly a seventy-two on a scale of one to five. Charlotte comforts him and patiently waits for everything to heal.

When the moment finally arrives, they’re back in bed together.

Mike jokes that his new equipment technically makes him a virgin.

Charlotte promises to be gentle.

Afterward, she’s glowing. Everything was wonderful. The alteration worked.

So Charlotte asks what they’re doing Saturday.

Mike suddenly becomes distant.

He doesn’t want things to get serious.

He’s feeling like a whole new man.

And apparently, this whole new man needs to be shared with the women of Manhattan.

Charlotte never sees him again.

Be careful what you wish for.

Back at Miranda’s apartment, she’s attempting an experiment of her own.

Instead of falling asleep while waiting for Steve, she drinks five cups of coffee and stays awake until he arrives after two in the morning.

Steve is thrilled to see her.

They start kissing. Miranda grabs wine and heads toward the bedroom.

By the time she gets there, Steve is asleep.

Miranda loses it.

She wakes him and unloads everything she’s been holding back. She doesn’t want morning sex. She doesn’t want her schedule destroyed. She doesn’t want to rearrange her entire life because Steve works nights.

Steve suggests they have sex now.

Miranda informs him he missed the window, Steve can’t believe there is a window for sex.

Of course there is…this is Miranda.

Eventually Steve has had enough.

He’s a bartender. He spends all night dealing with other people’s neuroses. He doesn’t want to come home and deal with hers too.

“When you get a whole doorway of time, call me.”

And he leaves.

For a moment, it seems like everyone’s attempts at alteration have completely backfired.

Charlotte changed Mike and lost him.

Miranda refused to change her schedule and lost Steve.

Carrie asked Big to make room for her and left his apartment after giving him a black eye.

Samantha might have had the right idea all along.

Then there’s a knock at Carrie’s door.

It’s Big.

Black eye and all.

He tells her maybe she needs a key to know he’s crazy about her, but he’s given out keys before and never gotten them back.

Maybe he does hog the bed.

But it’s his bed.

And he likes Carrie in it.

Then, finally, he offers up something he’d like her to change.

The oranges have to go.

Carrie is confused.

Big hates that she eats oranges in his bed. They’re sticky. They make the sheets smell.

Carrie smiles.

“What are you gonna give me for the orange?”

Big realizes they’ve officially entered negotiations.

And apparently negotiations might take all night.

So for the first time, Big spends the night at Carrie’s apartment.

Not because Carrie fundamentally changed him.

Not because Big suddenly became a different person.

They simply made a little room for each other.

Miranda is learning the same lesson.

At two in the morning, her phone rings.

It’s Steve.

He apologizes for waking her and asks her to walk over to the window.

Look at the moon.

It’s a blue moon, he tells her. Something rare. For once, Miranda stops looking at the clock.

She stops thinking about tomorrow’s schedule.

She stops calculating how many hours of sleep she’ll get before work.

She simply looks.

Then she asks Steve to come over.

That night they make love.

And in the morning, they do it again.

Miranda ends up an hour late for work.

She doesn’t even notice.

Maybe Carrie had been asking the wrong question all along.

Maybe you can’t change a man.

But once in a blue moon, you might discover you’re willing to change a little yourself.

What It Says About Then vs. Now

I think we’re even more obsessed with “standards” now than Carrie and the girls were in 1999.

We have lists of red flags, green flags, non-negotiables, attachment styles, love languages, relationship boundaries, and entire TikTok accounts telling us exactly what someone should be doing if they’re really interested.

And some of that is probably healthy.

But relationships also require something much less glamorous: compromise.

What I love about this episode is that Carrie eventually realizes there’s a huge difference between changing someone’s personality and asking them to make room for you.

She doesn’t need Big to stop being Big. She needs evidence that their relationship isn’t only happening on his terms.

Miranda doesn’t need Steve to suddenly become a nine-to-five lawyer. Steve doesn’t need Miranda to abandon everything that makes her Miranda. They just need to occasionally meet somewhere between closing time and the morning commute.

Charlotte is the perfect warning on the other side. She gets exactly the alteration she thought she wanted and discovers that changing the packaging doesn’t guarantee you’ll like what comes next.

Maybe the goal was never finding someone who doesn’t require adjustment.

Maybe it’s finding someone worth adjusting for.

The City as a Character

New York is constantly reinventing itself, which makes it the perfect backdrop for an episode about change.

Restaurants become something else overnight. People move apartments, switch careers, cut their hair, change their entire lives and somehow show up at brunch acting like nothing happened.

But relationships move differently.

Big’s apartment is still Big’s apartment. Miranda still has to be at work in the morning. Steve still closes the bar at two.

The city can transform overnight… people usually need a little longer.

And once in a while, all it takes is a blue moon over Manhattan to make someone stop rushing long enough to notice.

The Quote Closet

“You have to take Big for how he is.”

There’s accepting someone for who they are, and then there’s accepting a relationship that isn’t giving you what you need. This entire episode lives somewhere in between.

“You pull the wrong thread, everything falls apart.”

Samantha might be talking about men, but this feels true about so many relationships. We all have things we’d change. The question is which threads are safe to pull.

“I feel like I’m back in your life and nothing has really changed.”

This might be the most important thing Carrie says in the episode. Getting back together wasn’t enough. She needed their relationship to actually move forward.

“Maybe I hog my bed, but it’s my bed... and I like you in it.”

Not exactly poetry, but for Big? Practically a sonnet.

I used to think compatibility meant finding someone whose life fit perfectly into yours.

Same schedule. Same expectations. Same habits. Someone who somehow arrived fully formed and required absolutely no adjustment.

The older I get, the less realistic that sounds.

Because loving someone means eventually discovering all the things about them that you wouldn’t have chosen yourself. The cigar. The schedule. The oranges in bed. The way they somehow take up an entire mattress while technically occupying only half of it.

Maybe love isn’t about changing those things.

Maybe it’s about deciding which ones matter.

Carrie didn’t need a completely different Big. She needed Big to move toward her.

Miranda didn’t need Steve to become someone else. She needed to realize that sometimes a missed spinning class isn’t the end of the world.

And sometimes the biggest sign that a relationship is changing isn’t a key.

It’s someone finally sleeping in your bed.

Maybe old dogs don’t need entirely new tricks.

Sometimes they just need to learn how to make a little more room.

Is anyone else confused about how we’re already talking about fall? I swear I just got into the rhythm of summer and suddenly the windows are filled with back-to-office clothes and I’m being told I need a suede jacket. I’m not ready. There are still beach days to be had, dresses to wear, and at least a few more East Hampton weekends on my calendar.

Where I’ve Been

I started the last few weeks with happy hour at Waiting on a Friend in the East Village. Fun, casual, cheap drinks, exactly what you want from a happy hour. I’ve also been trying to run more, and one morning I caught the most beautiful view of the Freedom Tower. I took approximately 400 photos, obviously. Sometimes I forget how lucky I am that this is just part of my normal running route.

On a slightly more glamorous night, I went to Fouquet’s in Tribeca and finally spent some time at Titsou, their speakeasy tucked inside the hotel. Drinks, food, dim lighting, the whole thing. It was incredible. Beforehand, I popped into Garçonne across the street and loved it. Everything felt very understated and quiet luxury, and the store itself was so beautifully done.

Then it was back out east for an Agua by Agua Bendita event in East Hampton. If you aren’t familiar with the brand, the pieces are GORGEOUS. I was gifted the most beautiful dress to wear to the event, and it felt like one of those dresses that just belongs in the Hamptons. I’ll add photos because she deserves her moment.

I stayed the night at EHP Resort, had dinner at Sí Sí, and later that night drove to pick Conor up from the train. It was late, I had already had a full day, and somehow seeing him step off that train was still my favorite part. I love that he came all the way from the city to meet me out east for the weekend.

We went to Rita’s in Springs afterward, which was local, casual, and so much fun. The next morning was the complete opposite. We had one of those slow mornings at EHP where you don’t really have anywhere you need to be. Eventually we made our way to Montauk, went to the beach, and spent the day doing basically nothing. Perfect.

What I’m Loving

30 Days of OOTDs: I started a 30-day outfit challenge on Instagram, partly because I thought it would be fun and partly because I want to push myself to actually wear everything in my closet. I’ll add some of my favorites so far below.

Morning journaling: I’ve been starting my mornings by writing out my thoughts, goals, ideas, whatever is on my mind. Nothing overly structured. It’s just a little time before the day starts that belongs completely to me, and I’ve been loving it.

Summer dresses: The Agua by Agua Bendita dress has officially reminded me why I love getting dressed in the summer. Give me a beautiful dress, sandals, jewelry, and I’m done.

SATC Meets Real Life

There’s always that strange moment in New York when you’re still living one season and the city has already moved onto the next.

It’s 80 degrees outside, I’m spending my weekends in East Hampton and Montauk, and meanwhile the stores are telling me it’s time for fall fashion. Suddenly there are sweaters in the windows, suede everywhere, and everyone is talking about what we’re wearing back to the office.

Carrie would probably be the first person buying boots in August, but I’m not quite there yet.

Maybe it’s because summer always feels too short here. We spend months waiting for it, and then the second it arrives, everyone starts talking about what’s next. So for now, I’m refusing to rush it. I’m wearing the dress, going to the beach, taking the late train out east, and letting fall wait its turn.

I’m still holding onto every bit of summer I can, but I have to admit, some of those fall clothes are starting to look pretty good...

I think one of the biggest misconceptions about love is that there’s always a defining moment. A grand gesture. A speech. A kiss in the rain. We expect to be able to point to one exact second and say, that’s when everything changed.

But most relationships don’t work that way.

Sometimes the shift is so gradual you don’t even notice it until someone calls you “my girlfriend” for the very first time.

That’s exactly where The Man, The Myth, The Viagra begins. On the surface it’s an episode about myths, older men, one night stands, and Viagra. But underneath, it’s really asking a different question. How many stories do we tell ourselves just to make dating feel a little less terrifying? And every once in a while, what happens when one of those stories actually turns out to be true?

Carrie and Big couldn’t look happier.

They walk into one of Big’s favorite neighborhood restaurants where everyone already knows his name. The owner hugs him like family, walks them to their table, and Big casually introduces Carrie.

“This is my girlfriend.”

She freezes.

“You’ve never called me your girlfriend before.”

Big smiles.

“Sure I have. Just not to your face.”

It’s such a tiny line, but you can see it all over Carrie’s face. She’s trying not to make too much of it while secretly making it everything. For someone who spent an entire season wondering where she stood with Big, one word suddenly feels bigger than any grand declaration.

The owner eventually pulls Big onto the stage to sing, and instead of resisting, he leans into it completely, dedicating the song to Carrie while pointing at her from the microphone. She watches him with that unmistakable look of someone who’s finally allowing herself to believe things might actually be different this time.

“It was perfect.”

Across town, Miranda is having a much less magical evening.

She’s trapped at a comedy club on what Carrie calls her personal version of hell. Her date excuses himself to get the check, leaving Miranda sitting awkwardly alone while the comedian starts picking on her from the stage. Then her date’s phone rings.

It’s his wife.

In front of an entire comedy club, Miranda learns that the “divorced” architect she’s been seeing isn’t divorced at all.

“He’s really separated.”

She storms out while the comedian yells after her, making the humiliation somehow even worse.

The next day at lunch, Miranda is furious.

“I asked him point blank. How many years have you been divorced?”

She isn’t just angry that he lied. She’s angry that she believed him.

Charlotte, forever the optimist, offers one of her fairy tale stories about a married man who really did leave his wife, marry the woman he loved, and live happily ever after in Connecticut. Miranda immediately dismisses it as another urban relationship myth.

According to her, every unbelievable love story belongs to “a friend of a friend.” It never actually happens to anyone you know. Charlotte quietly points across the table.

“It happened to Carrie.”

Everyone turns.

Carrie tries explaining that something has shifted between her and Big. She can’t fully describe it, only that it feels different this time.

Miranda isn’t buying it. Neither is Samantha.

Carrie can’t really blame them.

After everything they’ve witnessed over the past year, she’d probably question it too.

Back at her laptop, Carrie begins wondering if dating itself survives on mythology. Heroes. Soulmates. Divorced men who actually are divorced. One night stands that become relationships. Maybe modern dating requires just enough fantasy to keep everyone from giving up entirely.

While Carrie wrestles with romantic myths, Samantha stumbles into one of Manhattan’s oldest.

An older billionaire.

She meets Ed moments after he finishes chatting with Donald Trump, casually jokes about buying her another drink, then quickly upgrades the offer.

“Can I buy you an island?”

Suddenly Samantha is listening very closely.

When Carrie later asks about him, Samantha proudly announces he’s seventy-two.

Carrie nearly spits out her coffee.

“Fifty.”

“Factor in millions and millions of dollars.”

“Still fifty.”

It’s one of those conversations only Samantha Jones could win without actually winning.

Meanwhile, Big is cooking dinner.

Or attempting to.

Carrie watches him fumble with pieces of veal while handing him drags from her cigarette between stirs of the pan. It’s domestic in the most Big-and-Carrie way imaginable. No candlelit perfection, just flour-covered hands, cigarettes, teasing, and wine.

Then Carrie makes a request. She wants Big to have dinner with her friends.

She doesn’t just want them to know about him anymore.

She wants everyone she loves to exist in the same room.

To her surprise, Big immediately agrees.

Which almost scares her more than if he’d argued.

Before dinner can happen, Miranda calls wondering why Carrie never showed up for their plans. Carrie sheepishly admits she’s at Big’s apartment because he wanted to cook. Miranda doesn’t even try hiding her frustration.

“You just dropped your life and ran right over to his.”

Carrie insists things are different now. Miranda hears the exact same relationship they’ve been watching all along. Neither of them is entirely wrong.

Steve, however, arrives at exactly the right moment.

The bartender who gently corrected Miranda’s manners the night before somehow managed to turn one incredible night into something Miranda refuses to believe could be real. After they sleep together, Steve asks for her phone number.

Miranda immediately assumes he’s pretending.

He insists he actually wants to take her to dinner.

She insists men don’t do that.

Steve laughs.

“You’re a real pisser.”

It’s one of my favorite Steve moments because he never tries to outsmart Miranda. He simply refuses to play the cynical game she’s become so good at.

Samantha’s evening with Ed takes a very different turn.

Dinner arrives accompanied by diamonds hidden beneath napkins and dinner plates. Bracelets. Earrings. A tennis necklace. It feels like every fantasy she’d jokingly imagined.

Until Ed casually mentions the one thing he never leaves home without.

“A big old pocket full of Viagra.”

In the bedroom, Samantha keeps the lights off for as long as possible.

But some things darkness can’t hide.

The moment she catches sight of his naked body, she bolts from the apartment so quickly the maid is already waiting with her purse. The fantasy officially expires at the front door.

Miranda’s myth gets another chance when Steve unexpectedly appears outside her apartment asking her to dinner.

She interrogates every possible motive. He patiently answers every question.

Finally he asks the only one that matters. “For one second... can you believe maybe I actually like you?”

Miranda can’t.

Not yet.

It’s easier to believe in disappointment than sincerity.

Then comes Saturday night. The dinner Carrie has been looking forward to all week.

She arrives at Big’s apartment excited, nervous, convinced this is the moment her two worlds finally come together. Big opens the door wearing boxers. He’s not dressed.

Then comes the sentence she never wanted to hear.

“Do you mind if I don’t go?”

Just like that, every old insecurity comes rushing back.

Carrie quietly leaves without arguing. She can’t even bring herself to tell the girls the truth when she arrives at the restaurant. She simply says Big got caught at work.

No one believes her.

Miranda especially.

“I knew it.”

The conversation grows heavier until Steve unexpectedly appears with a tray of drinks. Miranda jokes about the fact that they slept together, but Steve isn’t laughing. Pulling her aside, he asks why she assumes every man is lying.

“Can you, for one second, believe that maybe I do like you?”

Miranda still can’t.

Steve walks away disappointed.

Back at the table, Carrie prepares herself for the worst.

Then she looks up.

Big is walking down the stairs.

Soaked from the rain.

Smiling.

He hugs Carrie, greets every one of her friends, orders another round of drinks, and immediately settles into the table as though he’d been part of the group all along.

Miranda watches the scene unfold for only a few seconds before suddenly jumping up from the table.

She runs outside. Steve is already halfway down the block.

Standing in the pouring rain, she calls his name.

When he turns around, she finally says the one thing she couldn’t say before.

“Maybe... I can believe it.”

Then she kisses him.

In the rain, of course.

Because maybe Charlotte wasn’t completely wrong.

Back inside, Carrie looks around the table.

Big is making everyone laugh.

The women who spent an entire season questioning him are laughing right along with him.

For the first time, he isn’t just Carrie’s complicated boyfriend.

He’s part of her life.

And maybe that’s the real fairy tale.

What It Says About Then vs. Now

I love this episode because it reminds us that cynicism often feels smarter than hope.

We convince ourselves people won’t call, relationships won’t change, one night stands stay one night stands, older men with too much money always come with a catch.

Sometimes they do.

But sometimes they don’t.

The hardest part about dating isn’t believing the wrong people. It’s staying open enough to believe the right ones when they finally show up.

The City as a Character

Only New York could make myths feel believable.

A billionaire buys diamonds over dinner. A bartender changes your mind in the middle of a rainstorm. A famous restaurant owner hands your boyfriend a microphone. Somewhere between downtown bars and Upper East Side apartments, impossible stories start sounding almost ordinary.

That’s the magic of Manhattan.

It somehow makes you cynical and hopeful at exactly the same time.

The Quote Closet

“You’ve never called me your girlfriend before.”

Sometimes one word changes everything.

“Can you, for one second, believe maybe I actually like you?”

Steve wasn’t asking Miranda to trust him. He was asking her to trust the possibility that something good could happen.

“Maybe... I can believe it.”

One of the sweetest moments in the entire series. Miranda doesn’t suddenly become an optimist. She just cracks the door open.

“That was the night we stopped being a myth and became real.”

Maybe every relationship has a moment where it quietly stops being something you’re hoping for and simply becomes your life.

What I love most about this episode is that none of the myths come true in the way anyone expects.

The billionaire isn’t Prince Charming.

The one night stand turns into something real.

The impossible relationship finally starts feeling possible.

And Carrie realizes that maybe love isn’t about believing in fairy tales.

Maybe it’s about recognizing the moment you no longer need one.

☀️ Mood: Making the most of New York summer

If you asked me where I’ve been this summer, I don’t think I’d have one answer. Half my week is spent walking through Lower Manhattan on my way to Printemps, and the other half is spent watching the sun set over the water in East Hampton. Somewhere between the two, I’ve found a rhythm and I’m going to miss it when summer comes to an end.

Where I’ve Been

Every Friday, I pack a bag and head out to Long Island, where I’ve been creating content in East Hampton. My weekends are spent between EHP Resort & Marina and Sí Sí, photographing beautiful dinners, cocktails, and some of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen. If you’re looking for a summer dinner spot out east, Sí Sí deserves a reservation. The food has quickly become one of my favorites, and somehow every evening feels like it belongs in a postcard.

One of the best parts of this season has been staying with my parents while I’m out there. Time together has become an unexpected bonus of the job, and I’ve loved slipping back into little routines with them. A few weekends ago, I brought them to Chefs of the Hamptons, where some of the area’s top chefs came together for an incredible evening of food. Seeing them enjoy the experience made me just as happy as being there myself.

I dropped my mom and one of her best friends off in Sag Harbor for the afternoon. Hours later, I picked them up laughing so hard they could barely tell me about their day. Apparently a little shopping, a few glasses of wine, and hours of catching up was exactly what they needed. It was impossible not to smile watching them have so much fun together.

Before heading back to the city, I always make time for the Hamptons Flea. It pops up in a different location each weekend, and wandering through it has become one of my favorite summer traditions. Vintage designer bags, beautiful jewelry, old shoes with stories behind them. Every booth feels like a little treasure hunt, and every now and then you find something that makes you wonder who owned it before you.

Back in Manhattan, I finally crossed Monkey Bar off my list, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The atmosphere feels like classic New York, and the fact that they offer four different cosmopolitans immediately earned them extra points in my book. Safe to say I’ll be back.

Until Next Time...

One thing I’ve noticed this summer is that every year I think the Hamptons can’t possibly get any busier... and every year I’m wrong. Somehow there are more people, more dinner reservations to make, and more reasons to stay out until sunset.

I’m soaking up every bit of it before Conor and I head to Switzerland at the end of August for a trip that’s just the two of us, and I honestly can’t wait.

There comes a point in your twenties, and honestly your thirties too, when everyone seems to be living in a completely different timeline. One friend is buying an apartment. Another is getting engaged after six days. Someone else is having a baby. Meanwhile you’re celebrating the fact that your boyfriend gave you a toothbrush.

That’s what makes The Chicken Dance one of my favorite episodes.

On the surface, it’s about a whirlwind wedding. But underneath, it’s about comparison. It’s about looking around the room and wondering why everyone else’s life seems to be moving at a different speed than yours. It’s about questioning whether love is supposed to arrive like lightning or grow quietly over time. Most of all, it’s about realizing that no matter how confident we pretend to be, we’re all secretly checking to see if we’re somehow falling behind.

The older I get, the more I realize that comparison doesn’t disappear. The milestones just change. One day it’s engagements. Then houses. Then babies. Then careers. Someone will always seem ahead of you if that’s where you’re choosing to look.

Episode Deep Dive

Miranda has finally bought her own apartment, and somehow owning real estate in Manhattan immediately means she has to own furniture too. Carrie jokes that no one in New York actually buys furniture until they’re expecting houseguests, and Miranda proves her point as movers haul a brand-new pullout couch into her apartment. She has no idea where it even came from because Charlotte’s talented interior designer friend, Madeline Dunn, has completely taken over decorating the place.

Sitting on the new couch, Miranda explains that it’s for Jeremy, an old friend visiting from London who’s staying with her while he explores job opportunities. She’s excited, maybe even a little hopeful. Jeremy is smart, funny, single, and after years abroad he’s finally back in New York. It feels like one of those situations where you can almost hear the romantic comedy music starting in the background.

At the same time, Carrie has quietly become something she’s never really been before.

A regular at Big’s apartment.

She discovers she’s forgotten her toothbrush, and without hesitation asks if he has a spare. Instead of handing her one from a drawer, Big walks into the bathroom, opens the cabinet, takes out his own electric toothbrush, replaces the brush head with a brand new pink one, hums to himself while he does it, kisses her forehead, kisses her lips, and walks away like it isn’t a big deal.

For Carrie, it is a very big deal.

“There was only one pink brush head, and Big was giving it to me.”

“It was the single most encouraging moment so far in our relationship.”

It’s such a tiny moment, but that’s what makes it feel enormous. Before there are rings or declarations or moving trucks, sometimes intimacy looks like making space for someone in your bathroom cabinet.

Jeremy arrives at Miranda’s apartment the following evening, exhausted from London but immediately announcing that he’s tired of dating and ready to get married. Miranda barely has time to process the statement before there’s another knock at the door.

It’s Madeline.

She stops by with Miranda’s end table, and within seconds Jeremy is completely captivated.

Miranda tries introducing them, but they’re already shaking hands, smiling, asking each other questions. It’s like watching two magnets snap together while you’re standing in between them.

The three head out to dinner, but it quickly becomes obvious that Miranda has accidentally become the third wheel on what was supposed to be her own evening. Jeremy barely notices her. Madeline barely notices her. Carrie narrates it perfectly.

“Miranda found herself on one of those dream first dates. Unfortunately, it was somebody else’s.”

Trying to salvage the night, Miranda suggests Jeremy should probably head home because of the jet lag. Instead, he tells her to go if she’s tired. He’ll find his own way back. She points out that she never made him a key.

Madeline smiles.

“I have one.”

Of course she does.

Miranda quietly throws cash on the table, says goodnight, and walks away while Jeremy and Madeline continue talking as though she had never been there at all.

A week later, Miranda hosts what she believes is Jeremy’s going-away party.

Friends fill her apartment. Samantha and Charlotte mingle through the crowd. Jeremy clinks his glass for a toast.

He thanks Miranda for letting him stay with her. He thanks her for introducing him to Madeline.

Then he announces that Madeline has agreed to marry him.

The room erupts into applause.

Miranda freezes.

Then quietly says, “We should get more ice.”

Later, the four women sit together on a brownstone stoop trying to process what just happened.

Miranda sighs.

“Everyone says as soon as you get a place of your own, someone will propose. I thought it would be to me.” Carrie jokes that the least Madeline owes her is a mortgage payment. Charlotte, forever the romantic, insists it’s proof that love at first sight really exists. Samantha immediately disagrees.

“This isn’t love. This is about two people justifying a week of nonstop f*cking.”

Miranda only cares that it happened on her furniture. Charlotte somehow finds the whole thing encouraging. If two strangers can get engaged after a week, maybe anyone could.

Carrie quietly admits she’s been dating Big for over a year and is thrilled because... he gave her an electric toothbrush… It’s funny because it’s true.

One couple races toward forever while another celebrates dental hygiene.

Neither feels wrong. They just feel impossible to compare.

Samantha, meanwhile, can’t understand everyone’s obsession with marriage in the first place. “If you’re single, the world is your smorgasbord.”

As if the universe wants to prove her point, a handsome man approaches asking for directions to Jeremy’s engagement party. Samantha immediately volunteers to escort him there and disappears into the night.

Miranda watches her leave.

“My apartment is going to be lucky for everybody but me.”

The comment lands because we’ve all had moments where it feels like everyone else’s life is changing except our own. Walking home, Miranda finally says out loud what’s been building underneath the jokes.

“Why not me? What am I doing wrong? Am I invisible?”

As if on cue, her doorman stops her.

“Can I help you?”

“I live here.” Sometimes New York has impeccable comedic timing.

That night, Carrie needs a reality check. She curls up at home, lights a cigarette, and calls Big. She tells him about Jeremy and Madeline’s engagement after only one week.

Big isn’t impressed. “This is New York. Nothing’s shocking. We’ve embraced public urination.” Carrie asks if he believes in love at first sight. “I believe in lust at first sight.”

She keeps trying to pull him into the conversation, hoping he’ll indulge the fantasy just a little longer. Instead he asks what she’s wearing.

When she apologizes for waking him, he laughs and tells her that next time she should be waiting at the door naked. It’s playful. It’s affectionate. It’s very Big.

But it also doesn’t answer the question she was really asking.

Can love happen instantly? Or does it slowly build through toothbrushes, late-night phone calls, and learning how someone takes their coffee?

The show then asks people of NYC if they believe in love at first sight:

Madeline is glowing. Of course she believes now.

One man insists New York women need blood tests and ATM receipts before handing out their phone numbers.

Another woman points out that it’s hard to believe in fairy tales when people are exposing themselves on the subway.

Only in Manhattan could romance and absolute chaos exist on the very same block.

Madeline dives headfirst into wedding planning with the kind of enthusiasm only someone who’s convinced they’ve found “the one” after a week can have. Carrie gets dragged along to florist appointments where every tulip, centerpiece, and ribbon suddenly carries life-or-death importance. Before she knows it, she’s volunteered to write something to read during the ceremony. Charlotte is a bridesmaid, Miranda is in charge of the guest book because she introduced the couple, and somehow everyone has been assigned a role in a wedding between two people they barely know.

At lunch, Carrie panics over the request. “I write about sex, not love. What do I know about love?” It’s such a Carrie problem. She spends every week trying to answer impossible questions about relationships, yet the moment someone asks her to define love for real, she comes up empty.

Meanwhile, Samantha has a crisis of her own. The handsome man she picked up after Miranda’s party starts saying something oddly familiar in bed, and suddenly she realizes she’s already slept with him... fifteen years earlier. He assumed they were playing some elaborate sexy stranger game. She had completely forgotten him. Charlotte is horrified that anyone could lose count, while Samantha reaches a very Samantha conclusion.

“I’m officially out of men. I either need to get married or move.”

Carrie immediately asks if she can use that in her wedding reading.

The wedding seems to be affecting everyone except the bride and groom. Charlotte can’t stop talking about the backless black satin bridesmaid dress she’ll be wearing. Samantha thinks it’s a little too sexy for a wedding, while Charlotte insists people are absolutely going to be looking at her. Miranda can’t believe she’s stuck with the guest book, and Carrie still has no idea how she’s supposed to write something meaningful about love when she’s still trying to figure out what it even looks like.

Back at Big’s apartment, she makes the mistake of asking him for help.

He immediately starts joking.

“Love is like a dove...”

Carrie groans that it’s supposed to be serious, but the two of them dissolve into laughter anyway. He teases her relentlessly, insisting he wouldn’t miss watching her recite “love, glove, dove” in front of all of New York. She smacks him with a pillow. He tackles her across the bed. It’s one of those rare moments where they aren’t discussing the future or overanalyzing the relationship. They’re simply enjoying each other.

When the day of the wedding arrives, Big shows up at Carrie’s apartment looking incredibly handsome in a tuxedo, and for a moment everything feels easy. Carrie is genuinely excited that he’s coming with her. It feels like another little step forward.

Until she hands him the card.

She asks him to sign it.

He refuses.

“They’re your friends.”

Carrie reminds him that his name was actually printed on the invitation. It wasn’t “Carrie Bradshaw and Guest” anymore. It was Carrie... and Big. That should’ve felt significant. Instead, he seems uncomfortable, almost annoyed, as though putting his name on the card somehow makes the relationship more real than he’s ready for.

It’s such a small disagreement, but with Big, the smallest moments always seem to carry the biggest meaning.

At the Plaza, Miranda stands faithfully beside the guest book while almost everyone ignores her. Samantha jokes that at least it gives them a good view of who arrived alone. Carrie wonders if she should be bothered that Big still hasn’t signed the card, and Miranda can’t resist pointing out she’s glad she never asked him to sign the guest book.

Charlotte arrives looking absolutely stunning, and within seconds she’s swept away by the handsome groomsman assigned to escort her down the aisle. Miranda watches another man breeze right past her without a second glance and can only laugh at the absurdity of it all.

“I’ve been standing here for half an hour. He didn’t even look at me.”

The ceremony itself is exactly what you’d expect from a whirlwind romance. Short. Sweet. Almost suspiciously efficient.

At the reception, Miranda whispers that it took Madeline six months to find her the perfect end table, but somehow she managed to organize an entire Plaza wedding in four weeks.

Samantha raises her glass.

“Your end table will last longer than their marriage.”

Then comes Carrie’s reading.

She steps up to the microphone, trying to sound confident, trying to believe the words she’s written. Halfway through, a phone starts ringing.

Big’s.

He answers it.

Then quietly walks out of the ballroom.

You can actually see Carrie’s heart sink.

She finishes reading through tears, pretending they’re tears of happiness for the bride and groom, but we know better. This isn’t really about the interrupted speech. It’s about realizing that no matter how many toothbrushes or invitations or weekends together they’ve accumulated, Big still doesn’t instinctively choose her first.

Charlotte, meanwhile, is convinced she’s found her own whirlwind romance. Sparks are flying between her and the handsome groomsman. They sneak upstairs to decorate the honeymoon suite, rose petals scattered across the bed, and before long they’re kissing.

Charlotte immediately begins wondering if she’s ruined everything by sleeping with him too soon.

Then he tells her he wants her to meet his parents.

For about thirty glorious seconds, it feels like she’s accidentally stumbled into another love-at-first-sight story.

Until his father grabs her butt on the dance floor.

When Charlotte tells the groomsman what happened, he immediately dismisses her, insisting his father would never do something like that and blaming Charlotte’s dress instead.

As he walks away, heartbroken, she calls after him:

“Did the last four hours mean anything to you?”

It’s funny and devastating at the same time because Charlotte wasn’t mourning a lifelong relationship. She was mourning the future she’d imagined in a single afternoon.

Back downstairs, Samantha has yet another man swear they’ve slept together before. She orders another Cosmopolitan. At this point, Manhattan officially feels too small.

Miranda discovers that being in charge of the guest book has somehow evolved into loading wedding gifts into the truck, because apparently the least glamorous jobs always find Miranda.

When Carrie returns, Big is ready to leave. The cake hasn’t even been cut.

He shrugs. “I can tell you how it goes.” That’s when Carrie finally says what she’s really means. “You wouldn’t even sign the card.” Big quietly admits what she’s feared all along. “I’m afraid we don’t want the same thing.” Carrie doesn’t ask for forever, she doesn’t ask for a ring. She simply says she wants someone who’s going to stay with her until the end of a wedding.

Big looks at her.

“Okay. I’ll stay.”

It’s not a grand declaration, it’s not a proposal, it’s simply choosing to stay.

Sometimes that’s enough. Sometimes it isn’t.

As the DJ calls all the single women onto the dance floor for the bouquet toss, Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha stand shoulder to shoulder.

The bouquet lands directly in front of them.

None of them move.

Instead, they watch it hit the floor.

It’s one of my favorite endings in the entire series because for one brief second, the four women reject the idea that catching flowers somehow determines their future.

Carrie walks out with Big instead.

She realizes that maybe their relationship isn’t the kind that announces itself after a week or races toward forever. Maybe it doesn’t look like Jeremy and Madeline’s.

Maybe it never will.

But maybe that’s okay.

What It Says About Then vs. Now

This episode feels even more relevant today because comparison has become a full-time job.

Back then, you found out someone got engaged because they invited you to the party. Today, you wake up to engagement photos, pregnancy announcements, new houses, anniversaries, promotions, and vacations before you’ve even had your morning coffee. It’s almost impossible not to wonder if everyone else has figured something out before you.

What I love about The Chicken Dance is that it refuses to say one timeline is better than another.

Jeremy and Madeline fall in love overnight.

Carrie and Big celebrate an electric toothbrush.

Charlotte falls in love over four hours.

Miranda wonders if she’ll ever be chosen.

Samantha wonders if she’s already dated the entire island of Manhattan.

Everyone is living a completely different version of adulthood, and none of them have any idea what they’re doing.

Maybe that’s the point.

The City as a Character

New York has always had a strange relationship with romance.

It’s cynical enough to laugh at love at first sight, yet optimistic enough to host a Plaza wedding for two people who met last Tuesday.

It’s a city where strangers become soulmates overnight, where apartments accidentally introduce future spouses, where your favorite bar can also be the place you realize you’ve already dated someone fifteen years earlier.

In New York, every coincidence feels possible.

That’s probably why people keep believing in love.

The Quote Closet

“It was the single most encouraging moment so far in our relationship.”

Sometimes progress isn’t measured by rings. Sometimes it’s measured by a pink toothbrush head.

“Everyone says as soon as you get a place of your own, someone will propose. I thought it would be to me.”

Miranda saying what so many people are afraid to admit. It’s hard watching someone else get the life you quietly imagined for yourself.

“I’m officially out of men to f***. I either need to get married or move.”

Leave it to Samantha to make an existential crisis one of the funniest lines in the episode.

“I’m afraid we don’t want the same thing.”

One sentence.

Every fear Carrie had wrapped up in eight words.

One of my favorite things about this episode is that it doesn’t end with a wedding. It ends with perspective.

For so much of our lives, we’re taught that love is supposed to arrive looking a certain way. There should be a timeline. A proposal. A perfect story you’ll tell at dinner parties forever.

But maybe love isn’t always the loudest couple in the room.

Maybe it’s quieter than that.

Maybe it’s someone who changes the toothbrush head.

Maybe it’s someone who agrees to stay a little longer.

Maybe it’s realizing that your relationship doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s to still be worth holding onto.

And maybe that’s why, after all these years, The Chicken Dance isn’t really about a wedding at all.

It’s about learning to stop measuring your life against everyone else’s.

Who’s getting married first.

Who’s moving away.

Whether soulmates actually exist.

And, sooner or later, whether cheating is ever forgivable.

When we’re younger, the answer feels easy. Cheating is cheating. End of discussion.

But then life gets messier. Relationships become more complicated. People make mistakes. Feelings overlap. Secrets start to feel easier than honesty. Suddenly you’re not debating someone else’s relationship anymore. You’re quietly trying to justify your own.

The Cheating Curve isn’t really about affairs. It’s about the gray area we all swear we’d never end up in, until somehow we do.

The episode opens at Charlotte’s newest gallery opening, one of those perfectly New York nights where everyone shows up because the champagne is free and being seen is almost as important as the art itself. The exhibit is all lesbian artists from Brooklyn Heights, making the room feel effortlessly cool. Charlotte is glowing. Her gallery is packed, she’s dating Gareth, the owner of a trendy downtown restaurant, Miranda has brought Ethan, the documentary filmmaker she’s been seeing, and Carrie arrives with Samantha, who immediately jokes that she didn’t realize it was “bring your own man.”

Almost immediately Samantha spots her handsome trainer across the room and disappears to flirt, while Carrie quietly slips away. She tells everyone she has a headache.

She doesn’t.

She’s going to Big’s.

She knocks on his door, he opens it with that familiar smile, tells her she looks sensational, and before another word is spoken they’re kissing. Carrie admits in voiceover that she knows exactly how wrong this is. She had sworn him off months ago. But somehow the secrecy makes everything feel even more exciting. The guilt becomes its own aphrodisiac. She says she’s never felt sexier or more alive.

Back at the gallery, Charlotte is having a very different night. She’s fascinated by the newest power players in the art world, successful, stylish lesbians who seem to have incredible shoes, flawless skin, and unlimited disposable income. She watches two women playfully fight over a painting and realizes she’s completely sold out the show. It’s the biggest success of her career.

Then she walks into the storage room looking for more champagne.

Instead she finds Gareth making out with another woman.

The champagne suddenly isn’t the only thing that’s gone.

The next day the four women wander through a Manhattan flea market replaying Charlotte’s disaster. Charlotte is furious. Samantha shrugs it off, pointing out it was only the second date. Carrie wonders if maybe Gareth simply doesn’t consider kissing cheating. Miranda recalls a Park Avenue guy who believed sleeping with women below 23rd Street somehow didn’t count. Samantha insists men cheat because they can. It’s biology. Charlotte argues women cheat differently. Women cheat emotionally. Carrie sits somewhere in the middle. Maybe cheating isn’t quite as black and white as everyone wants it to be. Maybe there’s a cheating curve.

Back at her computer she types the question that drives the episode.

If no one finds out... is it still cheating?

Meanwhile Samantha’s trainer is becoming more than just a trainer. While she struggles through another workout he lectures her about discipline and proper form. Every sentence sounds like flirting. By the time they’re stretching together, Wednesday has officially become a date.

Charlotte, meanwhile, is trying to move on. Gareth calls her at the gallery full of excuses, but before Charlotte has to respond, two of the power lesbians from the opening walk in to purchase their paintings. They compliment her Prada loafers, invite her for drinks, and before Charlotte knows it she’s spending the entire evening immersed in a world completely free of men. Drinks at G Spot become dinner at a trendy French restaurant, followed by dancing late into the night. Carrie notices how relaxed Charlotte seems. There are no mixed signals. No games. No wondering who forgot to call.

Just women enjoying each other’s company.

Across town Miranda is discovering Ethan has his own very specific habit.

Every time they have sex...

He turns on porn.

The first night she brushes it off.

The second night he actually asks her to move her head because she’s blocking the television.

Somehow Miranda has become the third wheel in her own sex life.

Back at Big’s apartment Carrie decides to cook dinner. Or, more accurately, she melts cheese for fondue and tears bread into pieces. Big lovingly points out she didn’t actually cook anything. They laugh, feed each other, and for a moment it feels almost domestic. Then Carrie casually mentions she hasn’t told the girls they’re seeing each other again.

Big admits he hasn’t told anyone either.

She asks why.

He says he thought she wanted to keep it quiet.

She isn’t even sure if that’s true.

The next morning she sneaks out of his apartment before anyone can see her.

And that’s when everything starts to unravel.

On the street she runs into Miranda, who immediately asks why she’s dressed so nicely for a dentist appointment at seven in the morning. Carrie lies. It slips out so easily it surprises even her. Miranda moves on to complain about Ethan’s obsession with porn, admitting she feels like he’s cheating on her with the women on the screen. Carrie comforts her, all while knowing she’s hiding something much bigger.

Walking away, Carrie realizes she hasn’t just been lying to Miranda.

She’s been cheating on her friends.

Samantha’s new relationship escalates quickly too. After a shower together, her trainer decides to shave part of her body into a lightning bolt.

Only Samantha Jones could somehow make that sound almost romantic.

Later the girls gather at Carrie’s apartment. Samantha proudly reveals the lightning bolt, horrifying Miranda and amusing Charlotte. Charlotte, meanwhile, announces she’s spending more and more time with her new lesbian friends. Samantha immediately asks the obvious question.

While all this is happening Carrie is locked in the bathroom. When she finally emerges she invents an embarrassing story about getting a diaphragm stuck just to avoid explaining who she’s been sleeping with.

But eventually the truth comes out.

On the sidewalk she admits she’s seeing Big again.

The reaction is immediate.

Charlotte can’t believe she’d go back after everything.

Samantha warns her nothing has changed.

Miranda asks the question that lands the hardest.

“If it feels okay... why are you sneaking behind our backs?”

Carrie has no answer.

That night she can’t sleep. For the first time since getting back together with Big, her friends’ reactions start echoing louder than her own heart.

Charlotte’s own fantasy comes crashing down the next day. One of her new friends finally asks the question everyone has been wondering.

Are you gay?

Charlotte honestly says no. She just enjoys being around these women because life feels simpler without men complicating everything.

The response couldn’t be clearer.

“If you’re not going to eat pussy... you’re not a dyke.”

Charlotte suddenly realizes she was trying to belong somewhere she never actually fit.

Samantha, meanwhile, discovers her trainer has been giving the exact same signature lightning bolt to another woman at the gym.

Apparently she wasn’t the only one getting “special treatment.”

Miranda finally reaches her breaking point with Ethan when he turns the volume up on the porn during sex. She gives him an ultimatum.

Me or the television.

He hesitates.

Miranda leaves.

Finally Carrie and Big go dancing together, something they’ve never done before. They’re laughing, flirting, moving together effortlessly across the dance floor when Carrie asks the question she’s been carrying around all episode.

“So... does this mean we’re officially seeing each other again?”

Big answers the way only Big can.

“If you say so.”

She pushes him harder.

Why did we break up?

He reminds her she was the one who walked away.

She almost tells him the truth, that she was terrified he would never love her the way she needed to be loved. That she believed he only really loved himself. That she was afraid he’d break her heart all over again.

Instead she simply says...

“I guess I was afraid.”

Big quietly admits something of his own.

He missed her.

Officially.

What It Says About Then vs. Now

I think this episode gets more interesting the older you get.

When I first watched it, cheating felt obvious. There were rules. Cross the line and you were done.

Now I think the episode is asking a different question.

How many little lies happen before the actual betrayal?

Carrie doesn’t cheat on her friends by sleeping with Big.

She cheats the first time she lies about where she spent the night.

Charlotte doesn’t pretend to be gay because she’s confused.

She does it because it feels easier than dating men.

Miranda isn’t really angry about the porn.

She’s angry because she wants to feel chosen.

Sometimes emotional honesty matters more than the actual offense.

And that’s still true today.

The City as a Character

This episode could only happen in Manhattan.

A gallery opening becomes a dating pool.

A flea market turns into a debate about morality.

Lesbian bars, trendy restaurants, dance floors, tiny apartments, morning walks after secret sleepovers... every neighborhood reflects whoever the girls are trying to become.

New York gives them endless opportunities to reinvent themselves.

It also makes it nearly impossible to keep a secret for long.

“Maybe there’s a cheating curve.”

One of Carrie’s most complicated questions. Not because she’s defending cheating, but because she’s trying to understand why relationships rarely fit into simple rules.

Miranda always knew exactly where to aim. Sometimes our friends ask the questions we’re desperately trying not to answer ourselves.

Every episode of Sex and the City asks a question.

Sometimes the hardest truth to admit isn’t that someone else hurt you.

Maybe it’s because death has a way of cutting through all the nonsense. The unanswered texts, the games, the excuses, the timelines we swear we’re following. For a few hours everyone is forced to sit still and acknowledge the one thing New Yorkers spend most of their lives trying to outrun: time.

And if there’s one thing Sex and the City always understood, it’s that funerals aren’t really about the people who died.

They’re about the people who are still here.

They’re about the questions that suddenly feel impossible to ignore.

Am I happy? Am I wasting time? Am I alone?

And perhaps the scariest question of all.

Am I actually living?

This episode begins with a funeral, but it’s really about resurrection.

Not just Big and Carrie.

All four women.

The episode opens with Carrie standing in her apartment mourning Javier, a beloved New York designer and friend who died at only thirty-four years old. Carrie reminds us that there are only two occasions for wearing a little black dress during the day. One is leaving a party far too late. The other is leaving one far too early.

Javier’s funeral feels less like a funeral and more like Fashion Week. Everyone arrives wearing his newest collection. Samantha even shows up wearing one of his outfits and unapologetically points out that it cost two thousand dollars and has already appreciated in value since his death.

Only in Manhattan.

As Carrie looks around the crowd she realizes everyone suddenly loves Javier more now that he’s gone. That’s New York. Sometimes people become most valuable once they’re no longer available.

While the service is taking place, the wind launches Samantha’s hat that Charlotte was wearing across the cemetery. It lands at the feet of a handsome man standing beside a grave. He picks it up and hands it back with a smile.

His wife is buried there. Within minutes Charlotte has a date.

Because somehow Charlotte York could find a potential husband literally anywhere.

Meanwhile, Javier’s sister Josefina takes the stage. Overnight she’s inherited his empire, his influence, his status. Carrie notices how quickly grief transforms people in this city. One day Josefina was invisible. The next she’s fashion royalty.

Death, apparently, is very good PR.

After the funeral Charlotte can’t stop talking about the widower. The girls immediately warn her.

A widower is dangerous territory. A dead wife becomes perfect. You aren’t competing with an ex-wife. You’re competing with a memory.

Charlotte, naturally, ignores every word.

Across town Miranda is buying an apartment. What should be one of the proudest moments of her life quickly turns irritating. Every person she encounters seems confused that a successful woman would purchase a home entirely on her own.

It’s just you?

The question follows her everywhere.

The realtor asks it.

The closing attorney asks it.

The mortgage paperwork asks it.

It’s one of the most frustrating Miranda storylines because it’s still painfully relevant. She has the money. She has the career. She has the down payment.

Yet somehow everyone acts as though a husband must be missing from the equation.

While Miranda is being reminded she’s alone, Carrie is suddenly terrified she doesn’t have enough time.

Javier’s death has shaken something loose.

She hasn’t gone to Greece. She hasn’t finished painting her bathroom. She hasn’t paid off her Visa bill. She feels like life is moving faster than she is. So she does the one thing she probably shouldn’t do.

She calls Big.

And just like that they’re making dinner plans.

Thirty seconds.

That’s all it takes.

Six months to end the relationship.

Thirty seconds to reopen the door.

Meanwhile Samantha is attempting to raise money for Javier House, a foundation for fashion professionals struggling with addiction. Her fundraising efforts lead her directly to wealthy financier Richard Cranwell.

Or as he prefers to be called, Dick.

The flirtation is immediate.

The problem is his wife Sandy discovers it just as quickly.

And Sandy is not a woman you want as an enemy.

Within a day Samantha finds herself unofficially exiled from Manhattan society. Restaurants suddenly don’t have tables. Clubs suddenly don’t have her name on the list.

She has been socially assassinated.

Watching Samantha get blacklisted is hilarious and horrifying at the same time because she finally experiences something she never has before.

Rejection.

Not romantic rejection. Social rejection.

And it absolutely destroys her.

Back in Charlotte’s world, things are moving much faster.

One drink turns into kissing.

Kissing turns into crying.

Crying turns into sex.

Apparently all the grieving widower needed to move forward was forty-five minutes and Charlotte York. Soon Charlotte is convinced she’s helping him heal. Miranda immediately labels her what she clearly is.

A rebound.

Charlotte insists it’s different because the wife is dead.

Honestly, that’s exactly the kind of logic Charlotte would use.

The fantasy continues until he invites her to his late wife’s memorial service.

Charlotte arrives carrying flowers…then another woman arrives carrying flowers…then another.

Suddenly Charlotte realizes she’s not the new woman in his life.

She’s one of many.

The cemetery meet-cute is officially over.

While Charlotte is discovering reality, Carrie is trying to figure out whether seeing Big again is the worst idea she’s ever had.

Dinner starts innocently enough.

They talk about heaven.

They talk about death.

They talk about reincarnation.

The conversation feels easy. Familiar. Dangerously familiar.

Big suggests going back to his place.

Carrie immediately says no.

Then yes.

Then no again.

Then walks away.

It’s one of those classic Carrie moments where she’s arguing with herself in real time.

Part of her knows exactly how this story ends.

The other part still wants to believe it could be different.

Meanwhile Miranda receives another reminder of her independence when her elderly neighbor casually informs her that the previous resident died alone and wasn’t discovered for a week.

Even worse…the cat reportedly ate half her face.

If there has ever been a storyline designed specifically to terrorize single women, this is it! Miranda spirals and has a panic attack.

She ends up in the hospital.

And for the first time beneath all her sarcasm, we see genuine fear, not fear of being single, fear of being completely alone. It’s one of the most vulnerable Miranda moments in the entire series.

At the hospital Carrie promises something simple.

Put me down as your emergency contact.

And suddenly Miranda doesn’t feel quite so alone anymore.

Samantha eventually hits rock bottom too.

After exhausting every social connection she has left, she ends up volunteering at Javier House doing actual physical labor.

No networking. No social climbing. No angle. Just work.

And oddly enough, that’s where her luck changes.

By the end of the day she’s being brought to the light with Leonardo DiCaprio and her social exile is officially over. Only Samantha Jones could find redemption through manual labor and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Back in her new apartment Miranda places a framed photograph of herself and the girls above the fireplace.

It’s a small moment, but an important one.

Finally Big shows up at Carrie’s apartment.

Once again they’re standing in a doorway.

Once again they’re caught between what happened before and what might happen next.

Carrie refuses to go back inside.

Instead she drags him somewhere completely unexpected.

A bowling alley.

They drink beer. They flirt. They laugh. No pressure. No expectations.

Just fun.

For the first time in a long time they feel alive together. And by the end of the night they don’t make it to the second game. Carrie and Big are back.

Reincarnated.

What It Says About Then vs. Now

What always strikes me about this episode is how much it understands that loneliness and being alone are not the same thing.

Charlotte is surrounded by romance and still ends up disappointed.

Samantha is surrounded by people and suddenly finds herself completely isolated.

Carrie spends the entire episode chasing connection only to realize she wasn’t actually looking for Big. She was looking for certainty.

And Miranda, the most independent of the group, is the one most terrified of ending up alone.

Twenty-five years later we’re still having the same conversation.

We just call it different things now.

Situationships.

Soft launches.

Avoidant attachment.

But underneath it all we’re still asking the same question: Who shows up when something goes wrong? This episode argues that the answer isn’t always a romantic partner, sometimes it’s your friends.

And honestly, that’s one of the most beautiful things Sex and the City ever had to say.

The City as a Character

A funeral becomes a networking event.

A cemetery becomes a dating app.

A hospital becomes a place of clarity.

A bowling alley becomes a second chance.

Only Manhattan could make death feel glamorous and make a random Tuesday night feel life-changing.

The city never stops moving, which is exactly why the girls are so afraid of standing still.

Miranda hears it over and over while buying her apartment. A question that’s meant to be harmless but feels like an accusation.

“The city moves so fast they give you the Sunday paper on Saturday.”

One of Carrie’s most underrated observations. New York always makes you feel like you’re running out of time.

“Big and I had been reincarnated. I’d never felt more alive.”

A perfect ending. Hopeful, romantic, and just a little dangerous.

Some episodes are about dating.

Some are about sex.

And then there are episodes like this one, where the relationships are almost secondary. Because underneath all the flirting and funerals and bowling games is a much bigger question.

What do we do with the time we’re given?

Miranda buys the apartment. Samantha starts over. Charlotte lets go of the fantasy.

And Carrie decides that maybe being alive means risking heartbreak one more time.

Whether that’s wise or not is another story entirely.

There are certain phrases that seem harmless until they’re directed at you.

And perhaps the most dangerous one of all: “Single and fabulous.”

Because for every woman who claims she’s perfectly happy on her own, there’s usually a tiny voice somewhere in the back of her mind wondering if everyone else believes her.

Season 2 opens with one of my favorite observations about being single in New York. Carrie reminds us that certain events are so rare they demand special attention. A solar eclipse. Getting your second latte for free. And somehow, on one random night in Manhattan, all four women finding themselves completely unattached at the exact same time.

Naturally, they celebrate.

And naturally, the city immediately decides to test them.

Episode Deep Dive

The episode opens in a salsa club downtown where all four women are dancing, drinking, and enjoying something they rarely get to experience together, life without men complicating things.

At the bar, Carrie raises a shot and proposes a toast.

“Here’s to us without men.”

Charlotte practically recoils.

She’s not toasting to that. It’s bad luck.

Only Charlotte York could find a way to turn tequila into a superstition.

Samantha, meanwhile, is feeling philosophical. Men are wonderful, she explains, but expecting them to complete you is dangerous. Enjoy them, yes. Depend on them, absolutely not.

Then, because the universe loves irony, a handsome club owner named William immediately walks over and hands Samantha his business card.

Miranda is impressed she doesn’t ditch the girls on the spot.

Carrie, however, has somewhere else to be. She’s been selected for a New York Magazine profile about twenty Manhattan singles called “Single and Fabulous.”

Samantha is personally offended she wasn’t chosen.

Charlotte begs Carrie to stay.

One more drink turns into several more drinks, which turns into Carrie stumbling home at dawn, exhausted and slightly delirious, giving a thumbs up to a sanitation worker as she wanders through the city.

Determined not to look exhausted for her photo shoot, Carrie decides on a truly terrible plan.

She simply won’t sleep.

The next morning she’s sitting upright in bed with a coffee and a newspaper before eventually passing out face-first on top of both.

The phone rings.

It’s Stanford.

She’s forty minutes late.

By the time Carrie arrives, everyone is annoyed, including Stanford’s new boyfriend Nevin, who greets her with, “You’re about a fucking month late.”

Carrie collapses into the chair in front of the camera, chain-smoking, apologizing, begging for coffee and asking whether there will be time for makeup.

The photographer barely cares.

The result will haunt her for the rest of the episode.

A few days later, after a workout in Central Park with the girls, Carrie stops at her neighborhood bodega for cigarettes. While waiting for her usual order, she glances at the magazine rack.

And freezes.

There she is.

On the cover.

Single & Fabulous?

One tiny punctuation mark. One giant emotional crisis.

Suddenly, Carrie isn’t being celebrated. She’s being questioned.

At brunch, she arrives wearing a bucket hat like a celebrity fleeing paparazzi.

She is horrified.

The girls gather around the magazine, equally offended. Charlotte wonders if they can sue. Miranda points out they’re hardly building a legal case around punctuation.

The article itself doesn’t help.

“How fun will club hopping be at 40?”

Carrie practically chokes.

“Who’s 40?”

Miranda is the only one willing to call out what’s really happening.

Every few years, she argues, some magazine publishes a story designed to terrify women into getting married.

The girls all loudly declare themselves single and fabulous. But Carrie notices something, nobody sounds entirely convinced. And within a week, every single one of them is heading straight toward a relationship.

Miranda reconnects with Josh, the ophthalmologist she ghosted after faking orgasms twice. Samantha starts seeing William, who wastes no time painting elaborate pictures of summer weekends in East Hampton. Charlotte falls into an easy relationship with Tom, the handsome actor next door who’s always fixing things around her apartment.

Even Charlotte, who insists relationships are about much more than sex, seems willing to overlook the fact that Tom’s biggest asset may be his ability to repair a VCR.

Meanwhile Carrie finds herself spiraling, the question mark has gotten under her skin. Not because she cares what strangers think, but because she’s starting to wonder if maybe she’s been lying to herself. Maybe she isn’t completely happy being single, maybe she’s been pretending.

It’s a dangerous thought in Manhattan, where being coupled up often feels less like a relationship status and more like a social achievement.

As Carrie wrestles with that possibility, the rest of the girls begin their own versions of faking it.

Miranda, who has spent years mocking women for pretending their partners are perfect, decides to give Josh another chance. Unfortunately, Josh suffers from a condition familiar to many men in the Sex and the City universe: complete confidence paired with absolutely no understanding of female anatomy.

One night after they sleep together, Miranda finally tells him the truth.

She faked it.

Not once.

Both times.

Josh looks devastated.

Then confused.

Then mildly concerned that perhaps every woman he’s ever slept with has also been faking it.

What follows is actually one of the sweeter moments of the episode. Instead of getting defensive, Josh asks for instructions. Tips. Guidance. A tutorial, essentially.

Miranda gives him one.

The problem is that after two full days of coaching, things still aren’t exactly improving.

Meanwhile Samantha is busy falling for a fantasy.

William seems charming. Successful. Attentive.

More importantly, he’s a “we” guy.

Within days he’s talking about summer weekends in East Hampton. Long walks on the beach. Cooking together. Swimming together. A future that suddenly sounds very appealing.

Carrie immediately notices how fast things are moving.

Samantha ignores her.

Because sometimes the dream is too good to question.

Charlotte has her own version of a dream unfolding.

Tom has practically moved into her apartment. He’s fixing lamps. Repairing electronics. Handling every small inconvenience that pops up in Charlotte’s life.

The problem is that somewhere along the way Charlotte has started confusing convenience with compatibility.

Carrie points it out almost immediately. “You can’t be with him because he can caulk your tub.” Which might be one of the least romantic relationship assessments ever delivered. Charlotte laughs it off, but deep down she knows Carrie’s right.

The entire city suddenly seems obsessed with the idea that being alone is a failure.

Carrie feels it everywhere.

In restaurants, on the street, at her bodega.

Even while buying cigarettes she becomes convinced the cashier is looking at her with pity.

Single, thirty-something, still searching.

The magazine cover has become a mirror she can’t stop staring into.

So she decides to fight back.

If the city wants fabulous, she’ll give it fabulous.

She gets dressed up.

Heads out with Stanford.

Orders a trendy new drink she doesn’t even recognize.

And tries to reclaim the version of herself that existed before that stupid question mark showed up.

At the same time, Samantha is sitting alone in a restaurant uptown waiting for William.

At first she isn’t worried, then she checks the time.

Then she orders wine, then she checks the time again.

Eventually the realization arrives, he’s not coming.

The future he spent days describing was exactly that.

A story.

One designed to get what he wanted in the present.

And suddenly Samantha, arguably the most confident woman on the show, finds herself sitting alone in a crowded restaurant trying not to cry.

It’s heartbreaking because we’ve watched Samantha play every role imaginable except this one.

Vulnerable.

Hopeful.

Disappointed.

When she accidentally spills her wine and begins apologizing through tears, the waiter treats her with more kindness than the man who promised her a summer in East Hampton.

It’s a small moment, but an important one.

Sometimes the people who actually show up are the people you never expected.

Back downtown, Carrie is finally relaxing. Existing outside of her own head for the first time all episode. A handsome stranger named Jake appears.

He’s cute, single, a smoker.

Essentially the exact man Carrie ordered.

They dance, they flirt, they leave together.

For the first time all episode it feels like Carrie might actually be moving forward. Then fate intervenes in the form of a magazine cover. Jake returns from a convenience store holding a copy of New York Magazine.

Carrie sees it instantly. There she is.

Single & Fabulous?

Staring back at herself.

And suddenly she realizes what she’s really doing. If she goes home with Jake tonight, it won’t be because she likes him, it’ll be because she’s trying to prove something.

To the magazine, to strangers, to herself.

And that’s when she knows she has to leave. Not because Jake did anything wrong, because she finally understands the difference between wanting someone and needing validation.

Around the city, everyone else reaches their own conclusion.

Charlotte admits she doesn’t actually love Tom and lets him go.

Miranda quietly stops returning Josh’s calls.

Samantha gets her revenge by throwing a drink in William’s face.

And Carrie does something that felt almost revolutionary in 1999.

She takes herself out.

Alone.

No friends.

No boyfriend.

No distractions.

No armor.

The waiter approaches and asks if she’s waiting for someone.

Carrie smiles.

“No. It’s just me.”

And for the first time all episode, that answer doesn’t sound sad at all.

What I love about this episode is that it understands something we still haven’t figured out twenty-five years later.

Everyone says they support single women.

Until a single woman looks genuinely happy.

Then suddenly people start asking questions.

The magazine cover wasn’t really asking whether Carrie was fabulous.

It was asking whether being single could possibly be enough.

Today we’ve replaced magazine covers with TikToks, engagement announcements, and algorithm-driven timelines that seem determined to remind us what everyone else is doing.

Different platform.

Same pressure.

The question mark is still there.

The City as a Character

New York feels especially important in this episode because the city is constantly presenting possibilities.

New drinks.

New relationships.

New parties.

New people.

The city keeps whispering that the next thing might finally be the thing.

But the episode argues that sometimes the bravest thing you can do in New York is stop searching long enough to enjoy your own company.

Sometimes it’s sitting across from an empty chair wondering why someone didn’t show up.

But sometimes it’s also a glass of wine, a table for one, and the realization that your own company might be enough after all.

And maybe that’s what Carrie finally learned sitting in that restaurant.

Honestly? One of the greatest SATC openings ever.

Because it perfectly captures that particular New York energy where every dinner reservation feels loaded with possibility. You’re not just going to dinner. You’re auditioning for companionship.

Meanwhile Samantha is out with Harrison, a successful litigator with an apartment in Museum Tower and what Carrie calls “excellent first-date pedigree.” They head back to his apartment after dinner, and at first everything feels very Samantha coded. Flirty banter. Expensive wine. Sexual chemistry. He jokes that his specialty is sexual harassment and Samantha smirks back, “Really? So is mine.”

Classic Samantha.

But then things take a turn.

Harrison casually guesses Samantha’s age. “What are you, 40? 41?”

And suddenly Samantha, who normally walks through Manhattan with the confidence of a woman who invented sex itself, freezes. You can literally watch her confidence leave her body. She excuses herself to the bathroom, studies her face in the mirror under harsh lighting, then walks back into the bedroom only to discover Harrison chained up naked inside a closet asking her to slap him.

And somehow the weirdest part of the night wasn’t the sex swing situation. It was him thinking she was forty.

The next day Samantha tells the girls the story over hors d’oeuvres at a downtown party, and Miranda immediately declares that all single men over thirty are freaks.

Carrie pushes back at first. That feels unfair.

But then the episode begins proving Miranda right one horrifying date at a time.

Carrie goes out with an indie documentary filmmaker who admits he only makes PBS documentaries about endangered seagulls to build credibility before becoming rich off action movies. “Fuck the seagulls,” he says over pasta while Carrie internally dies.

Then there’s Date Number Two, who seems perfectly pleasant until a stranger in a movie line stands slightly too close behind him and he explodes into a screaming profanity-filled rage in the middle of Manhattan.

Then comes the handsome broker who steals a used paperback from a sidewalk bookstore despite making two million dollars a year.

That’s the genius of this episode. The men aren’t cartoonishly awful. They’re almost normal. Which somehow feels scarier. Every date begins with possibility and ends with Carrie realizing she’s accidentally having dinner with a sociopath who probably screams at waiters.

At home, Carrie starts researching old freak shows while smoking cigarettes and spiraling about modern dating. She types the question into her laptop: Is it true? Are all men freaks?

And honestly, this episode feels like the blueprint for every modern dating conversation happening online right now. The idea that everyone seems fine until they suddenly reveal the deeply unhinged thing lurking beneath the surface.

Today it’s men with secret girlfriends and “looking for casual” in Hinge bios. In 1999 it was men stealing books and living in bondage closets.

Different decade. Same emotional exhaustion.

Meanwhile Charlotte is dating Mitch Saylor, otherwise known throughout Manhattan as “Mr. Pussy,” which is maybe the most aggressively late-90s storyline imaginable. Charlotte is horrified when Samantha reveals his reputation in the bathroom at a gallery party. Samantha practically speaks about him like he’s urban legend folklore.

“He’s renowned.”

Charlotte keeps insisting she wants a real relationship, not just incredible sex, but eventually Mitch wears her down. And suddenly Charlotte is having orgasms powerful enough to alter her personality.

Carrie narrates that if Mitch was a freak, Charlotte was ready to run away and join the circus.

But the problem is the second Charlotte tries turning the relationship into something emotionally intimate, the entire thing collapses. They finally go to dinner instead of straight to bed, and Mitch can barely hold a conversation. Charlotte asks if he ever went to summer camp. He silently eats fruit in an aggressively sexual way instead of answering.

Honestly one of the funniest visual jokes in the series.

Charlotte realizes she projected an entire fantasy relationship onto a man she barely knew outside the bedroom. Which feels very Charlotte. She’s always trying to turn chemistry into destiny.

At the same time Samantha becomes obsessed with aging after hearing Harrison call her forty. She bumps into Monica, who casually explains she had fat from her ass injected into her face. Samantha immediately books an appointment with a plastic surgeon on Upper Fifth.

The scene at the doctor’s office is actually sad underneath the comedy. Samantha starts by wanting one tiny tweak, then the surgeon begins drawing red lines all over her face and body suggesting more procedures. Suddenly Samantha stares at herself in the mirror completely covered in markings.

It’s one of the rare moments where Samantha’s confidence cracks.

Because beneath all the jokes about sex and power and confidence, Samantha’s greatest fear has always been becoming invisible.

Then there’s Miranda, who ends up on a double date with Carrie and Ben’s friend Luke. Miranda immediately realizes Luke is one of those hyper-specific Manhattan men who treats New York like the center of the known universe. He proudly announces he hasn’t left Manhattan in ten years.

Ten years.

Miranda looks horrified.

Carrie narrates that she accidentally set Miranda up with a “Manhattan Guy,” a mutant strain of single man who feeds exclusively on late-night screenings and downtown bars.

When Miranda finally leaves, she turns to Carrie and says something important: if Luke is a freak, Ben probably is too.

And that thought completely infects Carrie.

Because now Carrie actually likes someone.

Ben feels easy. He’s funny. Smart. Attractive. They have chemistry. Their dates are effortless in that rare SATC way where the city suddenly feels softer around Carrie. They kiss outside her brownstone with Manhattan glowing behind them and for once Carrie isn’t anxious or performing or obsessing over Big.

Which of course terrifies her.

Because if every single person is secretly bizarre, then what horrifying thing is Ben hiding?

So after they sleep together and Ben leaves for a soccer game, Carrie completely unravels. She snoops through his apartment searching for proof that he’s secretly insane. She goes through drawers, cabinets, closets, bookshelves. At one point she’s smoking a cigarette while aggressively trying to pry open a locked box with a knife like a literal maniac.

And then Ben walks in.

Honestly the secondhand embarrassment in this scene is almost unbearable.

Carrie tries explaining herself, but she can’t. Because there’s nothing rational about what she’s doing. Ben quietly opens the locked box revealing… Cub Scout badges.

That’s it.

No secret sex dungeon. No murder evidence. No weird fetish. Just childhood memorabilia.

And suddenly Carrie realizes the freak in the relationship was her.

That final narration is one of my favorite Carrie realizations ever because it’s painfully honest. The city makes everyone paranoid eventually. Dating makes everyone paranoid eventually. When enough strange things happen to you, you stop expecting normalcy. You start waiting for disaster.

And honestly, that feeling still exists now more than ever.

What It Says About Then vs. Now

What’s fascinating about this episode is how modern it feels.

Today we diagnose people through dating app screenshots. One strange text and the group chat goes into FBI mode. We’re constantly looking for “red flags,” hidden meanings, signs someone is secretly toxic or emotionally unavailable or living with an ex-girlfriend.

“The Freak Show” was basically doing all of that before social media even existed.

But I also think the episode is secretly about fear. Carrie isn’t actually scared Ben is weird. She’s scared of trusting someone again after Big. It’s easier to believe everyone is secretly insane than admit vulnerability still exists.

And honestly? New York dating does this to people. The city rewards skepticism. You date enough emotionally bizarre people and eventually self-protection becomes instinct.

The problem is eventually self-protection starts looking a lot like self-sabotage.

The City as a Character

This episode could only happen in Manhattan.

The crowded downtown restaurants. The gallery parties. Central Park coffee benches. Tiny sidewalk bookstores. Expensive apartments hiding deeply strange people.

New York in this episode feels like one giant social maze where everyone’s performing a version of themselves. The city gives people permission to become exaggerated versions of who they already are. Sexy people become sexier. Neurotic people become more neurotic. Commitment-phobes become impossible to pin down.

And somehow Carrie walking home alone after sabotaging something good feels deeply New York too.

The city can make you feel surrounded constantly while still leaving you completely alone with your own thoughts.

The Quote Closet

“If a man is over 30 and single, he’s a freak.”

Miranda saying what every exhausted dater eventually thinks at least once.

“The reality was the only thing that went down regularly on Charlotte’s dates was a gold American Express card.”

Early SATC narration was so ruthless in the best way.

“You can tell everything about a person by who their friends are.”

One of those lines that sounds irrational until you’re three bad dates deep and suddenly fully believe it.

“Somewhere out there is another little freak who will love us.”

Honestly? Maybe the entire thesis of dating in New York.

What I love most about this episode is that it eventually turns the camera back on Carrie.

Because it’s easy to laugh at everyone else. The man chained in the closet. The angry movie-line guy. The sex-obsessed boyfriend. The Manhattan elitist. The weird documentary filmmaker.

But dating in New York long enough eventually makes everyone a little strange.

A little defensive.
A little suspicious.
A little too good at expecting disappointment.

And maybe that’s why this episode still works now. Beneath all the chaos and comedy, it’s really about how badly people want connection while simultaneously being terrified of it.

Which honestly feels like the most Manhattan thing imaginable.

Recs, obsessions, and where I went this week

We wrapped up our trip in Charleston staying at The Charleston Place, which was absolutely beautiful. The kind of hotel where every little detail feels intentional. I made a full video of it because I couldn’t stop filming corners of the property. I’ll link it because it deserves its own moment.

The second I landed back in New York, I met Mara Labell at MAD — the Museum of Arts and Design for her RE:FINE event. The space itself was incredible, and we got such good content there. Afterwards, I walked part of the way home through because the weather was too nice not to. New York feels different when you’re not rushing through it.

The next day, Mara had another pop-up at Printemps, so I spent the afternoon there creating content while employees modeled pieces for us. Everyone was so fun to work with, and the footage came out beautifully.

I’ve been walking constantly lately, especially along the West Side Highway. The water, the runners, people sitting in the grass with friends, the golden light around sunset. It feels like the entire city collectively decided to go outside again.

With so many fun plans coming up, I stopped into Zara to do a little shopping and immediately found myself trying on pieces that felt very Carrie Bradshaw coded (scroll down to see photos) because some of them were so good. I did leave with a few things, naturally.

One afternoon, I hopped on the subway back up to Columbus Circle to shoot content for Smorgasburg, which officially opened outside Central Park. It’s basically a giant outdoor food festival with endless vendors and people everywhere. The energy there is so good. Every stand smells amazing and everyone seems happy to just be outside eating something delicious.

Conor and I also did a little wine night in the Seaport area at this super cute spot tucked downtown. Simple, easy, one of those nights where nothing huge happens but you leave happy anyway.

Then I headed out east to the North Shore to spend the day at Claudio’s creating content. Rachel came with me, and we spent the afternoon eating seafood, drinking cocktails, listening to live music by the water, and talking to random people we met throughout the day. At one point Taylor Dayne started singing and honestly… it felt very summer-on-Long-Island movie montage in the best way.

Driving back into the city that night, Manhattan looked especially beautiful. One of those skyline moments that never really gets old no matter how long you live here.

Reflections from the week

Lately, life has felt very full.

I’ve noticed that the more I walk, the more connected I feel to the city. You notice little things when you’re not underground on the subway. The flowers outside brownstones, the energy around restaurants, the way everyone collectively softens when warm weather finally arrives.

New York always feels most alive when people are outside living in it together.

What I’m Wearing

I’m officially dressing for warm weather now. Lots of lighter fabrics, feminine pieces, and outfits that work for walking around all day but still feel polished enough for dinner or drinks after.

And Zara really got me this season. I tried on some pieces that feel just dramatic enough to make an ordinary day feel a little more fun.

SATC deep dive meets real life

One thing Sex and the City always understood about New York is that the city changes with the seasons, and so do you.

Summer Carrie always felt lighter… more spontaneous. More open to staying out too late, saying yes to another drink, walking instead of taking a cab.

That’s what this stretch has felt like. Less structure, more spontaneity. Letting the city pull me into things instead of trying to control every second of the schedule.

And honestly? I think that’s when New York is at its best.

Overheard in Manhattan

“If the weather’s this nice, I’m not going home yet.” Possibly said by me.

The city feels alive again, and so do I.

I’m especially excited for Memorial Day Weekend. One of my best friends is coming into town, and we’re heading out to East Hampton for what I already know will be a very fun few days.

Episode Deep Dive

The episode opens with Carrie introducing us to Susan Sharon, one of those Upper East Side women who somehow always looked polished and exhausted at the exact same time.

A few years earlier, Susan Sharon had married a man named Richard. Mean. Sharp. The kind of man who could turn returning CDs to the wrong shelf into a hostage negotiation.

Carrie explains that she only really saw Susan when Richard was out of town, which honestly told you everything you needed to know about the marriage.

The two women are walking through Manhattan together, smoking cigarettes and laughing when Susan suddenly insists Carrie come upstairs to her apartment because she has a birthday gift for her.

The apartment is beautiful. Adult. Quiet in that intimidating Park Avenue way that makes Carrie instantly feel sixteen again.

Susan hands her an incredible cashmere scarf: soft, expensive, impossibly elegant… and for a second, everything feels warm and easy.

Then Richard storms into the room.

“What the hell is going on?”
“What did I tell you about visitors after 9 PM?”

And suddenly the whole apartment changes temperature.

Susan shrinks. Carrie grabs her bag. Richard yells at her to “get the fuck out” of his house, and Carrie walks out stunned, trying to laugh it off even though the whole thing felt deeply awful.

Later that night, Susan calls Carrie in tears.

“I’m so embarrassed.”

Carrie tries to soften it, tells her he was tired, stressed, cranky. But Susan asks the question she’s probably been carrying around for years:

“What would you do?”

And Carrie — without thinking too hard about it — says the thing that changes everything.

“If things never changed… I’d leave.”

The next morning at brunch, the girls react exactly how you’d expect.

Miranda immediately tells Carrie she’s screwed no matter what happens. Samantha agrees. If Susan leaves Richard, it’s Carrie’s fault. If she stays, she’ll resent Carrie forever.

Charlotte, of course, thinks honesty in relationships is important.

Samantha practically chokes on that concept.

“Most relationships are based on a foundation of lies.”

Honestly? One of Samantha’s more spiritually accurate observations.

Meanwhile Miranda is dealing with a man she met at a Vietnamese food truck, Aaron, the “Spring Roll Guy” who has one issue: he loves dirty talk during sex.

Miranda, unfortunately, does not.

Watching Miranda attempt verbal seduction feels like watching someone try to perform improv at gunpoint.

She hates every second of it.

Back at her computer, Carrie starts wondering if maybe modern relationships had become too honest. Had we crossed some invisible line where every thought, every criticism, every fear suddenly needed to be shared?

The episode cuts between strangers confessing truths they’d never say out loud.

A firefighter admits his wife’s implants look great but feel terrible.
A woman admits she doesn’t actually want the truth about her chances of getting married.

And then Susan Sharon appears again.

Only this time… she’s left Richard.

Or at least she’s trying to.

Carrie takes her shopping while Susan unloads years of resentment. The insults they threw at each other. The cruelty. The humiliation.

But underneath all of it, Carrie can already feel something uncomfortable happening.

Susan doesn’t sound relieved.
She sounds untethered.

At Charlotte’s apartment, where Charlotte is currently redirecting all of her romantic energy into a perfectly groomed puppy named Henry, Susan keeps spiraling back toward Richard emotionally. Even while insisting she’s done.

Carrie realizes Susan doesn’t actually want freedom.

She wants reassurance.

Around the same time, Big sends Carrie flowers for her birthday.

Not romantic flowers. Not apology flowers. Not even really “I miss you” flowers.

Just… flowers.

The card says: Best Wishes.

Which somehow feels worse.

At lunch, the girls dissect the gesture like it’s CIA intelligence.

Charlotte insists it’s meaningful. Samantha says if it were jewelry, then it would be meaningful. Miranda thinks it’s absolutely nothing.

Carrie calls Big anyway.

And within thirty seconds somehow invites him to her birthday dinner… with his date.

Immediately regretting it.

Meanwhile Samantha finally reaches her breaking point in couples therapy with James.

She tries. She really does.

But eventually the truth explodes out of her.

“Your penis is too small.”

The silence afterward is catastrophic.

James retaliates instantly:

“Maybe your vagina is too big.”

Honestly, one of the most brutal exchanges the show ever gave us.

Across town, Miranda accidentally discovers Aaron’s one unmentionable insecurity during dirty talk and immediately says the exact wrong thing.

And Charlotte’s fantasy puppy slowly destroys her apartment, her shoes, and her sanity.

By the time Carrie’s birthday dinner arrives, everyone’s relationship is quietly falling apart in some way.

Big shows up late, charming as ever, immediately soaking up attention from the belly dancers while Stanford fumes from across the table.

Susan Sharon starts aggressively flirting with Big’s friend Jack, who finally snaps and tells her to shut the fuck up.

And weirdly… it’s exactly the kind of hostility that makes Susan realize she misses her husband.

Which honestly might be the darkest joke of the entire episode.

Later, Charlotte comes home to discover Henry has destroyed her apartment so thoroughly she finally gives him away.

Susan Sharon takes the dog.

And then, because this is Sex and the City and emotional progress is never linear, she gets back together with Richard.

Apparently the dog gave them “something to focus on.”

Or more specifically… something for Richard to yell at.

The episode ends quietly.

Carrie and Big stand outside after dinner on the Manhattan street corner where so many of their conversations seem to happen. There’s still tension between them, still history sitting in the space between every sentence.

He offers her a ride home.

She says no.

And as she watches him drive away, Carrie realizes the one thing she still cannot say out loud:

I’m still not over you.

What It Says About Then vs. Now

This episode feels painfully relevant now because we’ve somehow become even more obsessed with honesty than they were in the late ’90s.

Now everything is about transparency. Communication. Vulnerability. Radical truth.

But this episode asks something interesting:

Is every truth actually helpful?

Because there’s a difference between honesty and emotional dumping. Between intimacy and brutality.

Some truths bring people closer.
Others just make you feel temporarily powerful.

And honestly, modern dating sometimes feels like an endless cycle of “at least I was honest” after saying something absolutely devastating.

The older I get, the more I think SATC understood something really important:

Timing matters. Delivery matters. Compassion matters.

Not every thought deserves air.

The City as a Character

In this episode, New York City feels especially grown up.

Not dreamy Manhattan. Not whimsical Manhattan.

This is dinner-party Manhattan. Therapist-office Manhattan. Upper East Side apartments where couples quietly destroy each other behind beautiful lighting.

Even the birthday dinner feels so specifically New York, Moroccan restaurant, belly dancers, cigarettes outside, exes showing up uninvited emotionally if not physically.

The city isn’t romantic here.

It’s revealing.

It forces everyone into close proximity with the truth whether they’re ready for it or not.

The Quote Closet

Maybe not lies exactly… but selective editing definitely keeps a lot of couples alive.

One of the most horrifying moments in the entire series because once certain words leave your mouth, they never fully leave the room.

Sometimes the hardest truth to admit isn’t to someone else. It’s to yourself.

And just like that… I realized maybe relationships aren’t destroyed by the awful truth.

Maybe they’re destroyed by the truths we force out before we’re ready to hear them.

Because love isn’t just about honesty.
It’s also about mercy.

Knowing what to say.
What not to say.
And sometimes… knowing when silence is kinder.

And maybe growing up in New York is realizing that even the most self-aware people still carry around one impossible sentence they can’t quite bring themselves to admit.

Recs, obsessions, and where I went this week

I spent one afternoon in the West Village with my DJI camera, just wandering and capturing whatever caught my eye. The streets feel especially pretty right now. Flowers spilling out of window boxes, soft light hitting brownstones, everything just a little more alive. I got some beautiful content out of it. I’ll link the video if you want to watch, and add a few photos below.

After that, I met up with my client Mara and we went to the NYC Jewelry Antique & Object Show. It was one of those places you could spend hours in without realizing it. So many vendors, so many pieces, all carefully curated. I loved talking to a few of them and hearing the stories behind what they were selling. It made everything feel more personal.

From there, we went to Bebidas for Spanish wine and apps, which was exactly what we needed after a long day. Simple, good, and easy.

The next day I was creating content for Smorgasburg in Central Park. The weather was perfect, and the food looked almost too good to shoot. Almost. We did get to eat it after, which made it all worth it.

From there, I headed downtown to Printemps to shoot content. The employees modeled pieces for us, and the video came out so well. It’s always fun when everything just clicks like that. Check out the video here

I’ve also been making it a point to take a walk every day, usually around lunch. Even just 45 minutes makes a difference. The sunshine, the movement, the reset. It’s become something I actually look forward to.

Then I was off again. A quick trip to Boston for content creation with my cousin. We had breakfast together, worked all day, and just enjoyed being in the same place for a little bit. It felt easy and fun!

I flew back to New York for what felt like a second, and now I’m in Charleston for Conor’s work conference. It’s such a beautiful city, so I’ve been creating content here too. But I already know I’ll be ready to get back to New York by Thursday.

Reflections from the week

This stretch has felt like a mix of being very in it and constantly on the move.

The walks have grounded me. The travel has kept things exciting. And the in-between moments, the ones that aren’t planned, have been the ones I keep thinking about.

I think I’m learning that I don’t need to choose between routine and spontaneity. There’s space for both.

What I’m Wearing

Getting dressed right now feels like a guessing game. One day it’s a sweater and trousers, the next it’s a button-down and jeans.

I’ve been leaning into pieces that can shift with the day. Light layers, simple staples, things that feel put together without trying too hard. It’s not quite summer dressing yet, but it’s getting close.

SATC deep dive meets real life

There’s something very Carrie about being in constant motion but still finding time to notice things.

She was always moving through the city, from one place to the next, but she never rushed the moments in between. The walk, the coffee, the conversation.

That’s what this has felt like. Not trying to control every part of the schedule, just letting the days unfold and trusting that something good will come from it.

Overheard in Manhattan

“I swear I walked out for one thing and now it’s my whole day.”

A lot of movement, a lot of walking, and a lot of good moments in between.

Not the crying. Not the late-night spirals. Not even the way everything suddenly reminds you of him.

It’s the geography of it all.

How certain streets become off-limits.
Certain restaurants feel radioactive.
Even certain times of day carry a charge you didn’t ask for.

And in a city like New York City, small in all the ways that matter, the odds of running into the person who broke your heart feel less like chance… and more like fate with a sense of humor.

And I couldn’t help but wonder:
After a breakup… is there actually a right way to move on?
Or are we all just making up rules as we go, hoping one of them works?

Episode Deep Dive

We open with Carrie exactly where you’d expect her to be a month after a breakup: inside. Avoiding the world like it personally betrayed her.

Enter Miranda and Charlotte, one practical, one poetic, both united in their mission to get her out of the apartment. Miranda is aggressively anti-wallow. Charlotte, meanwhile, comes armed with The Breakup Rule: it takes half the time you dated someone to get over them.

A year with Big? That’s six months of emotional rehab.

Carrie… is not thrilled.

Still, she gets dressed. Because even in heartbreak, there’s one quiet, irrational hope: what if you run into him?

So she dresses for the possibility.

Because that’s the thing about breakups. You don’t just lose the person, you lose control of the narrative. And suddenly, every outing feels like a performance.

The girls pile into a cab, picking up Samantha along the way, who is, against all odds, still dating James. Loving James, even. Despite what she very bluntly refers to as… a significant shortcoming.

And then, in true Miranda fashion, the cure for heartbreak becomes immediate and chaotic:

Yankee Stadium.

Because if you’re going to get back in the game… you might as well take it literally.

Up in the nosebleeds, Carrie smokes, drinks, and watches Miranda fully come alive. There’s something almost comforting about it… the stats, the structure, the rules. Baseball makes sense in a way relationships don’t.

And maybe that’s why Carrie starts thinking about her own “stats.”
Years in the city. Countless dates. One real love. One real loss.

If this were a game… she’s not exactly winning.

But then something unexpected happens.

A foul ball flies straight toward them! Chaos, screams, hands reaching… and somehow, Carrie catches it.

And just like that, she’s pulled into something new.

Backstage, slightly drunk and riding that strange high that only comes from heartbreak mixed with possibility, Carrie meets the “New Yankee.” He’s charming, uncomplicated, easy. The kind of man who exists entirely in the present moment, which, after Big, feels almost radical.

So she does something bold.

She asks him out to the Dolce & Gabbana party.

Not because she’s ready… but because she wants to be.

And for a moment, it works.

There’s the party… Dolce & Gabbana, champagne, fashion people, a dress that quietly screams I’m fine. Charlotte brings her own chaos with a boyfriend who cannot, for reasons no one fully understands, stop adjusting himself in public. Samantha continues her losing battle with compromise. Miranda simmers beneath the surface, increasingly frustrated that everything somehow circles back to men.

And Carrie?

She scans every room.

Just in case.

Because even when you’re “moving on,” a part of you is still looking for the person you’re trying to forget.

She finds almost-Big more than once. That split second of recognition. That drop in your stomach.

But it’s not him.

Not yet.

Later, with the Yankee - Joe - things feel easy. There’s kissing, laughter, a version of herself that isn’t defined by heartbreak.

Until, of course, the city does what it always does.

She turns around in a bar… and there he is.

Big.

No warning. No buildup. Just presence.

And suddenly everything she thought she was becomes irrelevant.

Because heartbreak doesn’t disappear just because you put on a great dress.

Their interaction is brief, almost polite. He tells her she looks amazing. He’s calm. Unbothered. Exactly as composed as she isn’t.

And that’s what breaks her.

Not the words. Not the moment. But the realization that she isn’t over it. Not even close.

Outside, with Joe, she tries to push forward. Tries to stay in the moment.

But the truth spills out anyway… in tears, in apology, in that deeply familiar feeling of I thought I was okay, but I’m not.

And just like that, the rebound ends before it even begins.

Because sometimes “getting back in the game” isn’t about finding someone new.

It’s about realizing you’re still carrying someone old.

Recs, obsessions, and where I went this week

One night during the week I ducked into a cozy little bookstore on Fulton Street near the Seaport. One of those places where time slows down a bit. I didn’t rush, just wandered, flipped through a few things, and then went home to find my cat sprawled out on the bed looking impossibly cute. A very quiet, perfect night.

The next day felt like a shift. I took the ferry over to Greenpoint to go to Soft Bar for a cosmo review, but this one was different. Non-alcoholic. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was actually delicious. Bright, tart, and refreshing in a way that felt perfect for daytime. The space itself is beautiful, calm, and feels like somewhere you could sit for hours pretending to work. I also tried their soft espresso martini, which was the perfect non alcoholic pick me up!

After that, I met my friend Rachel at Little Rascal, also in Greenpoint, and we immediately canceled out the non-alcoholic moment with martinis and fries. We sat, talked, caught up, and gossiped in that way that only happens when you haven’t seen someone in a while… even though I saw here the weekend before.

The next few days were almost summer-like, which meant I walked everywhere. No real destination, just taking advantage of the weather while it lasts. New York feels different when you choose to walk instead of rush.

That weekend, I went to Manhatta in FiDi for another cosmo review. The view alone is worth it. One of those places where you order a drink and then immediately forget about it because you’re too busy staring out the window. It felt like a moment.

In between everything, I found myself in Nordstrom browsing their new arrivals, and it was dangerous. So many pieces that felt very Carrie in spring. Effortless, a little feminine, a little playful. I didn’t buy anything, but I thought about it for a while after.

I also wandered into Anthropologie’s home section, which turned into a full spiral about redecorating our apartment. We’ve never really done much to it, and suddenly I’m thinking about color, texture, and maybe even something bold. Very Carrie painting her apartment teal energy. I’m not committing yet… but I’m thinking about it.

I spent a couple of days out on Long Island, which always feels like a reset. The season out east is about to pick up, and you can feel it. I had lunch at 75 Main, one of my favorites, and it felt like a preview of what’s coming.

Back in the city, I had dinner and drinks with Addie and we tried Medi and Condesa in Hell’s Kitchen. Both were great, and being back in that neighborhood made me nostalgic. I used to live there, and there’s something about returning to old routines that feels comforting.

The last two weeks have also included a lot of nighttime walks. No headphones, no rush. Just letting the city lights guide me home.

And on Sunday, I went to a Fashion & Founders podcast event hosted by Rothy’s, where I listened to their Head of Brand talk about what’s next for them and the current market. I spent the afternoon networking with women in my industry, sipping matcha, and feeling that quiet motivation that comes from being around people who are building something.

Reflections from the week

These past two weeks felt less about plans and more about rhythm.

Walking instead of rushing. Sitting longer than intended. Letting nights unfold instead of scheduling them. It reminded me that the city doesn’t need to be conquered every day. Sometimes it just needs to be experienced.

I’ve been leaning into easy, transitional pieces. Things that work for a walk, a drink, or a spontaneous plan. Light layers, feminine details, and pieces that feel a little softer than winter.

And mentally, I’m already in spring. Which might explain the Nordstrom spiral.

I keep thinking about that scene in the first Sex and the City movie when Carrie hosts a party in her apartment after it’s been painted. Same space, same life, but everything feels… different. Lighter. A little braver. Like she’s stepped into a new version of it without making a big announcement.

And that’s kind of how this moment in the city feels right now.

Nothing has dramatically changed, but everything feels slightly shifted. The light stays longer, the air is softer, you find yourself out more, saying yes more…

It’s not a full reinvention. It’s just a quiet update.

And maybe that’s enough.

Episode Deep Dive

Carrie opens with the idea that maybe relationships themselves are the religion of the ’90s… rituals, rules, private beliefs you inherit without ever really questioning them. It’s a thought that lingers as she and Big are tucked into one of those early versions of domesticity that feels almost accidental: dinner, easy laughter, the soft blur of two people beginning to believe they’ve figured each other out.

Until you realize you haven’t.

And just like that, Carrie is standing outside the assumption she made about him, the one where he is always just “Big,” always self-contained, always slightly removed from anything that requires surrender. But now there’s a mother. There’s Sunday Church. There’s Armani in a pew. And Carrie, who thought she was getting closer to someone, realizes she might have been walking around inside a version of him that was never complete.

She wants in. Of course she does. That’s what she always does, tries to turn ambiguity into access. But Big keeps it contained, almost gently. This is something he does alone, with his mom. Something he isn’t ready to share.

And for the first time, Carrie can feel the outline of a boundary that isn’t negotiable.

Meanwhile, Miranda is living in a different kind of religious experience, one she did not consent to.

Her new boyfriend disappears after sex, every single time, into the shower like he’s washing away evidence of sin. At first she jokes, then she questions herself, then finally she asks him directly, standing there in the raw honesty of a post-intimacy silence that suddenly feels very unholy.

And he tells her the truth so casually it almost feels like an excuse: Catholic guilt. Childhood teachings. A lifetime of conditioning that turns pleasure into something that requires immediate cleansing.

It’s funny, until it isn’t. Because Miranda realizes she isn’t just dating a man, she’s dating his entire upbringing. And she wasn’t invited to that part of him.

Across town, Samantha is discovering a different kind of devotion altogether.

She meets James… a jazz-listening, suit-wearing, unexpectedly gentle man who looks at her like she is not a challenge but a melody. And for once, Samantha doesn’t lead with sex. She lets the rhythm build. She lets anticipation stretch. She even lets herself believe, briefly, in the idea that restraint might be its own kind of seduction.

And then they are intimate, and he’s... a little short sided.

It unsettles her more than she wants to admit.

Charlotte, meanwhile, is handed her own version of cosmic uncertainty when a psychic tells her, without hesitation, without softness, that marriage may not be in her future. She tries to undo it. Other psychics. Other readings. Different outcomes. But the idea has already taken root, what if there isn’t a “one day” at all?

What if that was never guaranteed?

And just like that, the girls are all orbiting the same question in different languages: what do you do when the future you assumed starts to disappear?

It all converges, as it always does, in Carrie’s world, at the intersection of desire and doubt.

Big’s church visit becomes the emotional center of gravity she didn’t know she was walking toward. She goes, partly out of curiosity, partly out of love, partly out of that unmistakable Carrie instinct to insert herself into meaning before it fully reveals itself.

She wants to see him there. Not to be seen there.

But she of course accidentally interrupts the service, and is more than just seen, she’s the center of attention.

Then, she is introduced to Bigs mom as a friend.

A word so small it feels like it shouldn’t hurt, and yet it does because it draws a line she didn’t draw herself. And Big, in his calm way, makes it clear: there are parts of his life she is not being invited into yet. Maybe not ever in the way she imagined.

And Carrie, standing in that church, realizes something quietly devastating, you can be close to someone and still be completely outside their life.

Afterward, everything feels slightly off-axis. The vacation is mentioned, but even that feels like a distraction from the real conversation neither of them are having. Big asks her to trust him. Carrie hears it as a request to stop asking questions.

And faith, suddenly, feels less like devotion and more like delay.

By the time everything unravels, Miranda’s illusions about intimacy, Samantha’s collision with emotional complication, Charlotte’s fracture in certainty, Carrie’s quiet humiliation wrapped in hope… it isn’t dramatic. It’s just clarity arriving too late to feel comforting.

Big leaves her at the end of it, not in anger, but in finality. A simple refusal to move at the speed she needs him to. Carrie is left standing with her bags, realizing she has been trying to turn uncertainty into commitment.

And you can’t negotiate faith with someone who isn’t offering it.

Recs, obsessions, and where I went this week

I started the week exactly how I like to, with a cosmo in hand.

Addie and I finally made it to Portrait Bar, a reservation I had been trying to get for what felt like forever. We slipped in mid-week, ordered cosmos, and settled in. The drink was great, but the space itself? Even better. Intimate, charming, the kind of place you want to stay a little longer (or a lot longer) than planned.

I stopped by the LoveShackFancy sample sale, which felt like stepping into a very pastel dream. I found a few pieces I loved but somehow walked away empty-handed, rare for me, honestly.

I also put together a Carrie Bradshaw Lifestyle Starter Guide freebie, and I’m not kidding when I say I poured hours into it. It’s one of those things that felt so fun to create, especially if you love those little NYC rituals as much as I do.

With the weather finally warming up, I’ve been walking everywhere. The kind of walks where you don’t even check the time. I took the LIRR out to Long Island to see one of my best friends from high school, and we ended up at Station Yards in Ronkonkoma for martinis and apps. It was easy, cozy, and right off the train, one of those unexpectedly perfect little spots. She also surprised me with the cutest Easter basket, which felt very wholesome in the best way.

I’ve also started running again in the mornings, which feels like a personality shift in itself. The sunrise over the Brooklyn Bridge alone is enough to keep me going, and the West Side Highway has been delivering some of the best views lately.

Work-wise, I’ve been creating content for Brooklyn Flea and Smorgasburg, which honestly feels like being in the middle of the city’s personality. Brooklyn Flea is full of vintage finds, unique pieces, and that slightly chaotic, treasure-hunt energy. Smorgasburg at WTC was completely different… focused on food, packed with people, and just such a fun, communal vibe.

I did a little spring shopping in SoHo at Mango and found some pieces I’ve already started repeating, especially the trench coat I now wear almost daily. It’s one of those items that makes everything feel a bit more put together. I also picked up a sleek laptop case that somehow makes carrying work around feel chic.

I popped into Aritzia later in the week and tried on an outfit I haven’t stopped thinking about. I didn’t buy it… but I might need to go back. (Top linked here, Pants linked here)

And of course, Central Park lately has been unreal. The cherry blossoms are officially here, and it’s one of those things that never gets old no matter how many times you see it.

For content, I had a session at Madame Vo with Invivo X SJP wine, where I tried recreating that iconic Carrie moment, sitting alone with a glass of wine, completely in her own world. It felt very on-brand for me. (Full reel coming soon!)

I also did another cosmo review at The Wall Street Hotel, which continues to be one of my favorite places to sit, relax, and people-watch. The cosmo was exactly what you want it to be… classic, balanced, no notes.

Conor and I had dinner at Gigino Trattoria in Tribeca and sat outside, which felt like a small win this early in the season. Penne vodka for me, chicken parm for him, wine, good conversation… the kind of night you don’t overthink.

We spent part of the weekend in Greenpoint with friends, where the skyline views honestly didn’t feel real. I’ll add photos, because they deserve it.

Episode Deep Dive

We open on Carrie and Big exactly where you want them, in bed, tangled up in that easy, post-sex comfort. Ice cream, laughter, that soft intimacy that feels like the beginning of something real. Carrie narrates how they’ve finally settled into each other, how this is what she always imagined it could be.

And then… she farts.

Not subtly. Not ambiguously. Fully.

The kind of moment you can’t rewind, can’t charm your way out of. Carrie freezes, mortified, immediately diving under the covers as if she can physically disappear from what just happened. Big, of course, is laughing… not cruelly, just genuinely amused. Which almost makes it worse.

She scrambles out of there minutes later, throwing on her clothes, mumbling something about being late, fleeing his apartment like she’s been caught doing something unforgivable.

And just like that, something shifts.

She avoids him the next day, tries to bury herself in work, but it’s no use. The moment she slows down, it replays in her head. Over and over.

When she finally sees him again, she’s bracing for awkwardness, for the moment to hang between them. But Big doesn’t treat it like a disaster. If anything, he leans into it. At dinner, he plants a whoopee cushion on her chair like a twelve-year-old boy, and when she sits down, they both lose it laughing.

It’s easy. It’s funny. It’s… normal.

And that’s when things get weird.

Because later that night, when Carrie slips into bed in black lingerie, ready to pick things back up, Big stops her. Says he’s tired. Suggests they just sleep.

The first time they’ve been in the same bed… and didn’t have sex.

Then it happens again.
And again.

Suddenly, Carrie isn’t laughing anymore.

At the nail salon, she tells Miranda, trying to sound casual, but it’s already spiraling in her head. Three times without sex feels like a pattern. Miranda, deep in her own dry spell, isn’t exactly a calming voice, three times sounds like nothing compared to her three months.

But Carrie can’t shake it. To her, it’s not just about sex, it’s about what it means. She confesses the fart, as if that’s the obvious root of the problem.

Miranda barely reacts.

“You farted. You’re human.”

But that’s exactly the problem.

Carrie doesn’t want to be human with Big. Not like that. He exists in this polished, perfect world: the perfect apartment, the perfect suits, the perfect ease. And she’s terrified that one imperfect moment has knocked her out of that fantasy.

She starts asking the question out loud: what’s normal, anyway? How often are people supposed to be having sex? The show flips into quick interviews, couples, strangers, all offering wildly different answers, none of them particularly reassuring.

Because no one actually knows.

Meanwhile, Samantha is in a yoga class, locking eyes with the instructor, already imagining exactly what she’d like to do with him. Carrie brings up her situation, hesitant, and Samantha doesn’t sugarcoat it, it’s trouble.

Then Carrie admits it.

“I farted.”

Samantha doesn’t even blink.
Huge mistake.

To Samantha, it’s simple: men don’t want women to be human. Not fully. Not in ways that disrupt the illusion. It’s not fair, but it’s real.

Still, Samantha has her own unexpected twist, the yoga instructor isn’t interested in sex. At all. He’s been celibate for three years, channeling all that energy inward, turning desire into something… spiritual.

Samantha is fascinated. And slightly horrified.

Because for someone like her, the idea that not having sex could be more powerful than having it… feels almost impossible.

Across town, Charlotte is in her own version of a drought, but this one is intentional. She’s been dating Kevin for weeks, proudly not sleeping with him, convinced it’s building something deeper.

Until Carrie meets him.

And realizes… she’s already slept with him.

Of course she has.

When Charlotte finds out, she’s horrified, not just because Carrie dated him, but because of what Carrie says next: he’s a sex maniac. It plants a seed Charlotte can’t ignore.

That night, when Charlotte finally decides to take things to the next level, Kevin stops her.

Not because he doesn’t want to but because now, thanks to medication, he can’t in the same way. The man who once couldn’t get enough of sex is suddenly… indifferent.

And Charlotte is left staring at a completely different problem than the one she thought she had.

Back in her apartment, Carrie is unraveling in a quieter way. She’s pacing, overthinking, trying not to call Big. Across the way, she notices her neighbors constantly having sex, like clockwork. Effortless. Uncomplicated.

She watches them like they hold the answer.

Eventually, she gives in and goes to Big’s, determined to fix whatever’s broken. She shows up in a skirt that hugs in all the right places, kisses him before he can even say hello, tries to pull him into that same rhythm.

But he’s watching a fight.

Distracted. Casual. Not meeting her where she is at all.

She pushes harder… climbing onto him, trying to force the moment until he snaps.

“Carrie, I’m trying to watch the game. Get off.”

And just like that, everything she’s been holding in spills out. It’s not about the game. It’s not about the sex. It’s about feeling like she doesn’t fit into his world anymore like one imperfect moment disqualified her.

She leaves, convinced it’s over.

Back home, she waits for the apology call that doesn’t come. Two days pass. Then more. She tells Miranda it’s over, that she ruined everything because she wasn’t perfect.

And that’s when the truth finally slips out:

“I think I’m in love with him… and I’m terrified he’s going to leave me because I’m not perfect.”

It lands.

Because that’s what this has been about all along.

Until Big shows up.

No call. No warning. Just… there.

They circle each other at first, both slightly defensive, both pretending they weren’t affected. She points out everything wrong with her apartment… the floors, the curtains and he stops her.

“I like it the way it is.”

It’s simple. But it lands.

Because maybe he’s not looking for perfect.

Maybe he never was.

He asks about the other night, and she admits it… she had a meltdown. No performance. No pretending.

Just honesty.

He looks out the window, notices the hyper-sexual neighbors, and almost casually says:

“We can do better than that.”

And then he kisses her.

And Carrie realizes something strange. That sometimes, what’s actually normal doesn’t feel the way you expected it to.

One night I wandered through Central Park, taking photos, taking my time, and letting myself enjoy it. On my way home, I stopped into my favorite TJ Maxx on 57th and 8th. It’s one of those locations where you always feel like you might find something good if you look hard enough. And of course, I did.

I found the bag. The one I’ve been thinking about for a while. The kind you tell yourself you’ll buy “one day,” maybe in Florence, maybe at the actual boutique, making a whole moment out of it. But there it was, right in front of me, at a price that made the decision feel very real. I didn’t buy it… yet. But I haven’t stopped thinking about it.

The next morning, I was off to Naples for The Collab pop-up, and it felt like stepping into a completely different world. A stunning home, incredible designers, and three days of nonstop content, cocktails, and shopping. It was one of those experiences where everything feels elevated but still fun. Honestly, it felt like something Carrie would have wandered into and never wanted to leave.

Mara Labell curated the event, and her jewelry is just as beautiful in person as you’d imagine. Another standout was Koshka, all the way from Paris, with the kind of pieces that make you stop mid-conversation. The whole weekend felt like a blur in the best way.

Then suddenly, I was back in New York… for what felt like half a second. Just enough time to reset before heading to Boston, which was charming in its own way, quieter but still full of character.

And then, just as quickly, I was off again, this time to Savannah for a wedding. Completely different pace, slower, warmer, and filled with long dinners and, of course, cosmos. Because no matter where I am, a cosmo always finds me.

I was there with my best friend Carly, and the two of us spent the weekend running around the city, laughing, getting ready together, and making the kind of memories that feel very SATC in spirit, even if we weren’t in New York.

Now I’m finally back in the city, and for the first time in a few weeks, I’m not unpacking just to repack. It feels good.

Also, I just started A Court of Thorns and Roses and I’m already hooked. If you’ve read it, I need to know everything.

Reflections from the week

There’s something about being away from New York that always reminds me how much I love coming back to it.

The travel was exciting. The experiences were incredible. But stepping back into the city, even briefly between trips, felt grounding in a way I didn’t expect. It made me realize how much of my routine, my energy, and my sense of normal lives here.

Sometimes leaving is what makes you appreciate it more.

What I’m Wearing

Lately it’s been all about florals and heels (since Ive been in Florida/Georgia climate)that probably don’t make sense for the amount of walking I do. Specifically, my six-inch Christian Louboutin heels (similar pair linked here), which I love deeply… even if my feet don’t always agree.

There’s something about getting dressed up, even when you’re in motion, that makes everything feel a little more intentional.

SATC deep dive meets real life

One thing Sex and the City always got right is that feeling of being in motion. Carrie moving through the city, through relationships, through phases of her life, always with a suitcase half-packed, physically or emotionally.

These past two weeks felt like that. Different cities, different versions of myself in each one. Dressed up in Savannah, content-creating in Naples, wandering through Central Park at home.

But no matter where I went, New York still felt like the constant. The place I return to. The place that makes everything else make sense.

Overheard in Manhattan

“I just need one warm day to believe in this city again.”

A few cities, a lot of outfits, and a constant return to New York. I’m finally back for a bit, and I’m ready to settle into the rhythm again.

And just like that, it wasn’t about the baby shower.
It was about that quiet, uncomfortable feeling when someone else’s life starts to look like the life you thought you’d have by now.

Because this wasn’t just anyone’s baby shower.
It was Laney’s.

And Laney… was never supposed to end up in Connecticut.

Episode Deep Dive

The invitation alone is enough to set everyone off. Miranda would rather be physically dragged there, Samantha thinks the whole thing is depressing, Charlotte is genuinely excited, and Carrie’s stuck on one detail: would any baby shower bother them… or just this one?

Because Laney used to be that girl.

We flash back to a downtown party — dark, loud, chaotic — and Laney is right in the middle of it, making out with someone, completely unbothered by the attention. Someone yells for her to show her tits and instead of being offended, it becomes a moment. A performance. Miranda’s making jokes, Samantha’s judging, but also… recognizing something familiar.

Laney wasn’t polished. She wasn’t predictable.
She was fun.

And then, somehow, she got married.
To a banker.
And moved to Connecticut.

That part never quite made sense.

So of course they go. Because not going would mean admitting something they’re not ready to say out loud.

On the morning of the trip, Carrie realizes she’s late, not just to the party... At first it’s just a thought, but by the time they’re piling into a convertible — no one entirely sure who’s driving — it’s sitting heavier. Charlotte shows up with an over-the-top baby basket, Miranda brings pastel condoms, Samantha brings alcohol.

“BYOB,” she shrugs.
“Bring your own baby,” Miranda says.

Connecticut hits immediately. It’s too quiet, too green, too perfect in a way that doesn’t feel real. Carrie steps out of the car and you can feel it, this is not their world.

Laney opens the door, glowing and pregnant and loud, thrilled they came. Samantha tells her she’s huge. Laney beams. She can eat whatever she wants now. No one really knows how to respond.

Inside, it’s exactly what you’d expect: soft voices, matching energy, women who all seem to have landed in the same version of life. Charlotte fits right in instantly, guided into the center of it all. Carrie and Miranda hover on the edges, watching.

Laney pulls them aside and immediately asks about Samantha, is she still going out every night, still sleeping around? It’s “sad,” she says now, like she wasn’t once the exact same person.

That’s the first moment something feels off.

Laney didn’t just change her life, she rewrote who she used to be.

As the party goes on, Carrie starts noticing the cracks. Quiet conversations, little confessions slipping out… women who used to have big jobs, big lives, now reduced to small frustrations they pretend not to mind. One talks about an internet lover. Another about missing who she used to be. It’s subtle, but it’s there.

Upstairs, Carrie escapes and finds a nude photo of pregnant Laney. Even now, part of her is still that girl. Carrie stands there wondering what survived… and what didn’t.

Downstairs, Charlotte is fully in it, until Laney casually reveals the baby name: Shayla.

Charlotte freezes.

Because Shayla isn’t just a name, it’s hers. The one she’s been holding onto, saving. Laney brushes it off, pretends not to remember, but Charlotte knows. And it hits harder than it should.

It’s not just about the name.
It’s about realizing someone else just picked up a piece of the life you thought was yours.

They leave not long after, ending up at a random bar, drinking beer and trying to shake the feeling. Charlotte is clearly upset. Miranda is exactly as cynical as she was before they left. Samantha refuses to let any of it make her feel small.

And Carrie finally says it.

“I’m late.”

Everything shifts.

Because now it’s not just something happening to someone else. It’s a possibility sitting right in front of her.

Later, Charlotte sits alone with her “wish box”… all the things she thought her life would be. Baby names, dream homes, perfect men. One by one, she pulls them out… and quietly lets them go. Not dramatically. Just… accepting that none of it is guaranteed.

Carrie and Miranda stand in a drugstore staring at pregnancy tests like they’re staring at two different futures. Miranda grabs the cheapest one. Carrie immediately rejects that.

“I spent $395 on Gucci shoes last week, this isn’t the place to be frugal”

Then with a freighting look, Carrie asks Miranda:

“What if I am?” she asks.
“If you are, you are,” Miranda says.

Simple. Terrifying. True.

Carrie can’t even take the test yet. She needs to understand how she feels first.

Before she can, Laney calls. Softer now. Nostalgic. She misses them. Misses who she was with them. And you realize, she’s not fully settled into her new life either.

So she shows up.
At Samantha’s party.

Pregnant, loud, trying to slip back into her old role like nothing changed.

But it doesn’t work.

She asks for a drink. Tries to get the party going. Tries to be the girl who made everything fun. And then, almost instinctively, she climbs onto the coffee table and offers to show her tits — like she used to.

Silence.

It’s not fun anymore. It’s not wild.
It’s just… sad.

Because you can’t go backward once your life has moved forward.

Carrie walks her out, gently, putting her in a cab. And right before Laney leaves, she says it:

“One day you’re going to wake up and not recognize yourself.”

Later, Carrie sits on a park bench watching a mother with her child. She tries to picture it, that life, that version of herself. Could she do it? Would she be good at it? Would she still feel like her?

A little girl wanders over. Carrie smiles. For a second, it feels possible.

And then it’s gone.

She gets her period.

And the feeling isn’t relief.
It’s something quieter than that.

What It Says About Then vs. Now

This episode still lands because the timeline has never been more blurred.

Back then, it felt like there was a “right” order: marriage, then babies, then the rest. Now, everything is happening at different speeds, in different ways, or not at all.

But the feeling hasn’t changed.

Watching someone else step into a life you’re not sure you want yet, or maybe do want, just not now, will always make you pause and ask where you stand.

The City as a Character

New York feels like possibility here. Unfinished, open, still becoming.

Connecticut feels like an answer. Clean, quiet, decided.

And the tension isn’t about which one is better, it’s about whether you’re ready for your life to have an answer yet.

The Quote Closet

“Sometimes there’s nothing harder than being happy for someone else.”
Because their certainty can highlight your uncertainty.

“It’s a cult.”
Miranda, saying what everyone’s thinking.

“One day you’re going to wake up and not recognize yourself.”
The fear isn’t changing, it’s not noticing when you did.

Maybe growing up isn’t about getting everything you once wanted.

Maybe it’s about watching those things land in someone else’s life… and realizing you’re not as ready as you thought you’d be.

Or maybe you are, just not in the way you imagined.

Because the truth is, there isn’t one timeline anymore. There isn’t one version of how this all goes.

There’s just the life in front of you… and the quiet question of whether it still feels like yours.

Recs, obsessions, and where I went this week

One night we went to a New York Rangers game at Madison Square Garden. Our seats were way up in the nosebleeds, but honestly that’s part of the charm. The energy up there is loud, chaotic, and very New York. The crowd was into every second of the game, and somehow the hot dog tasted even better because of it.

A few days later we went to an incredible wine tasting at Chelsea Piers. There were over 200 wine vendors from all over the world. Conor and I went with friends and made our way around the room trying a little bit of everything. I unexpectedly loved the Chilean wines, which I hadn’t really explored before.

Closer to home, a new pizza spot called Upside Pizza opened in our building. There is something incredibly convenient about good pizza being that geographically close. Dangerous, but convenient.

One night I met up with friends and we started with cocktails at Mr. Purple. The rooftop view from up there never disappoints. And like most New York nights, it didn’t end where we thought it would. We finished the night at Vanessa’s Dumpling House on the Lower East Side. It was packed wall to wall, barely anywhere to sit, but we managed to grab a stool and share a bunch of dumplings. One of those classic late-night city meals.

I also attempted a cosmo at a new bar and really wanted to love it. Unfortunately they added cinnamon, which was… a lot. I’m very serious about my cosmo reviews, so if I don’t love something, I simply don’t post about it. The place itself was adorable though, so I’m willing to give it another shot.

During the week I took a walk through Central Park, which still had little patches of snow tucked into the corners. I love the park year-round, but there’s something especially peaceful about it when winter is slowly fading out.

Shopping-wise, I tried on a very cute outfit at Aritzia that I nearly bought in a light color, but I know myself well enough to admit I would spill something on it immediately. I’m considering getting it in navy instead. We’ll see.

I also stopped by the Shoe-Inn sample sale, which was incredible. When I first went there was no line at all, which felt like a small miracle. I tried to go back the next day and it was completely wild. The city always catches on eventually.

And lately I’ve picked up a random new hobby: making leather notebook covers. It’s surprisingly simple and very satisfying. There’s something nice about doing something creative with your hands after staring at screens all day.

Reflections from the week

The last two days in the city have felt like summer compared to the rest of winter. Sunshine, warmer air, people outside again. I’ve been taking long walks and trying to soak up as much of it as possible. It’s crazy to think that two weeks ago there was snow in the park and then this Tuesday it was 70 degrees.

New York always feels different when the sun comes back. Everyone seems a little lighter, a little friendlier. It’s like the whole city exhales at the same time.

What I’m Wearing

It’s still technically winter, so layers are necessary, but I’ve been leaning into pieces that feel a little lighter. Button downs and good jeansI’m also thinking about that Aritzia outfit again. Navy might be the responsible choice… but we’ll see what happens. I also am searching for the perfect spring trench coat… like this one at Anthro! What do you think?

SATC deep dive meets real life

One of my favorite things about Sex and the City is how the girls treated the city like their playground. Dinner downtown could turn into drinks uptown, which could somehow end in dumplings at midnight.

These past two weeks felt a little like that. A hockey game turning into a hot dog memory. A rooftop cocktail turning into dumplings on the Lower East Side. A casual walk turning into a full afternoon outside.

New York has a way of rewarding curiosity. The best nights are usually the ones that wander.

“If it’s over 60 degrees I’m calling out”

Two weeks of hockey games, wine tastings, dumplings, sample sales, and a lot of walking. And just when winter started to feel endless, the sun came back out.
