Debt has a reputation problem.

Usually deserved.

People borrow too much. We build fixed obligations around variable assumptions. Then eventually the assumptions move.

The debt does not.

That version is easy to understand.

It is also only one version.

We tend to talk about leverage as though the liability itself is the risk. Sometimes it is. But there is a difference between using leverage and being leveraged.

One can preserve capital, liquidity and optionality. The other makes the rest of the balance sheet answer to the debt.

That distinction gets lost because the debt is visible.

The opportunity cost usually isnt.

A person can have no debt and very little optionality.

Another can have substantial liabilities and enough liquidity behind them that the debt barely influences the next decision.

The first balance sheet may look cleaner. But its not automatically stronger.

Sometimes paying cash removes the liability. It can also remove the liquidity.

Most conversations about debt never get this far.

This is why debt free has never felt like a complete financial philosophy to me. It describes one line of the balance sheet. Not the balance sheet.

Markets would never evaluate leverage without asking what is levered, at what cost, for how long, against what collateral and with how much liquidity behind it.

Outside markets, we usually skip that conversation entirely.

Debt is bad.

Cash is safe.

Owning something outright is responsible.

Sometimes all of that is true.

Sometimes it isnt.

Leverage does not create fragility on its own.

Mismatch does.

Variable obligations against unstable income. Illiquid assets funded by liabilities that demand liquidity. Too little cushion between what the position earns and what it costs to carry.

Liquidity is strange because it looks inefficient right up until you need it. Then it becomes the most valuable thing on the balance sheet.

Cash does not always maximize return. It maximizes the number of decisions you can still make.

That is where leverage can become useful. You borrow against one part of the balance sheet so you do not have to liquidate another. You accept a known carrying cost in exchange for preserving capital elsewhere.

That is not automatically reckless. It is a trade. You give something up.

Interest.

Collateral.

Certainty.

In exchange, you preserve something else.

Liquidity.

Time.

Choice.

The structure only works if what you preserve is worth more than what you surrendered.

The psychological problem is that debt is easy to see.

Opportunity cost is not.

A monthly payment arrives. The investment you sold to avoid that payment does not send you a statement showing what it might have become. The flexibility you surrendered has no line item.

We tend to fear visible liabilities more than invisible constraints.

I borrow against appreciating assets.

The debt is real. So is what it preserves.

Eventually leverage stops being abstract.

The real test is whether the debt changes your behavior.

Can you still hold through volatility?

Can you still walk away from the job?

Can you sell the asset when you want rather than when you have to?

Can you absorb a bad year without reorganizing the rest of your life around the liability?

If yes, you may be using leverage.

If no, leverage may be using you.

I am not sure financial freedom is the absence of liabilities. It may be the absence of liabilities that dictate your choices.

You can own everything outright and still have very little room to move. You can owe money and retain enormous optionality.

The interesting question was never whether debt is good or bad.

It is what the debt makes possible. And what it quietly makes impossible.

There is a difference between using leverage and being leveraged.

Most of that difference lives somewhere else on the balance sheet.

After a decade on trading desks, Ive seen often enough that the hedge can end up being the only profitable part of the position.

That sounds like a good thing.

Sometimes it is.

In markets, a hedge exists because you accept the possibility that your thesis may be wrong.

You own an asset and buy a put. You borrow at a floating rate and fix via swaps. You have exposure to a foreign currency and sell it forward.

You give something up for owning protection.

Premium. Upside. Liquidity. Some amount of participation if things go exactly as planned.

And in exchange, you make another outcome survivable.

A good hedge isnt judged by whether it makes money on its own. It exists to improve the position. And there is something psychologically comforting about that.

You dont need to know exactly what happens next. You just need to know what happens if youre wrong.

Markets allow this.

Life does too.

We hedge constantly.

We just use different instruments.

The salary hedges the business we keep saying we want to start. Emotional distance hedges the relationship were afraid to lose. Irony hedges the possibility that something sincere might be rejected. Keeping another option open hedges the discomfort of fully choosing this one. Low expectations hedge disappointment.

None of these are irrational on their own.

Most hedges make sense when theyre put on.

The problem is that protection can outlive the risk it was built around. Sometimes the protection is what allows you to take the risk in the first place.

The problem starts somewhere else.

It starts when the hedge works so well that you forget what it was originally protecting. You wanted to build something of your own.

So you kept the job while you figured it out.

Reasonable.

The income, benefits, promotion and higher bonuses year after year all reduced the risk.

A more expensive life eventually required the income that was originally supposed to finance your escape from it

The hedge performed beautifully.

The underlying never did.

Sometimes the hedge becomes the position.

This happens quietly because protection is easy to confuse with progress. A hedge can improve while the underlying thesis deteriorates.

The salary goes up. The calendar fills. The title improves. The house gets nicer.

And because the hedge is performing, the overall position can still look successful.

You can become extremely good at protecting a position you no longer want.

Finance at least makes the cost visible.

Protection has a price. An option has premium. A swap has economics, obligations and collateral. Insurance has a cost.

There is usually some way to estimate what you surrendered in exchange for reducing the downside.

Life is worse at showing you the premium.

What does emotional distance cost?

What does keeping every option open cost?

What does never saying exactly what you mean cost?

What does staying employed somewhere you stopped wanting to work cost?

What does making sure nobody can reject the real version of you cost?

Usually the cost appears somewhere else.

Less downside. Less upside. Less embarrassment. Less intimacy. Less failure. Less possibility.

The hedge did exactly what it was designed to do. That is what makes it difficult to blame.

And some hedges become increasingly expensive precisely because they keep working.

You continue paying because removing the protection now feels considerably riskier than it did when you first put it on.

The job was supposed to be temporary. Now leaving means giving up 10 years of income progression.

The emotional distance was supposed to protect you from getting hurt. Now closeness itself feels like exposure.

Keeping your options open was supposed to preserve flexibility. Now every choice feels like the unnecessary destruction of optionality.

The hedge becomes harder to remove than the original risk was to accept.

There is another version of this I find more interesting.

Sometimes we hedge things that have not happened yet.

Not financially. Emotionally.

We rehearse the bad outcome before it arrives.

Lower expectations.

Imagine the rejection.

Explain why we didnt really want it.

Then if the outcome is bad, part of us gets to say we already knew. There is comfort in being prepared. There is even more comfort in being right.

But emotional hedging has an unusual payoff structure. You experience part of the loss before you know whether the loss exists.

Markets allow conditional positioning.

Life usually resolves in a single realized outcome regardless of how many alternate scenarios the mind spent preparing for emotionally.

The unknown is finite.

The imagination surrounding it rarely is.

We sometimes pay the premium repeatedly for protection against an event that never occurs. And if the event does occur, presuffering doesnt settle against the realized loss.

We paid twice.

There is also a social version. We learn very early how much of ourselves to expose. Say something sincerely and it can be rejected. Say it jokingly and you retain an exit.

Care deeply but pretend not to and disappointment becomes easier to explain.

Want something but never admit how badly and failure becomes less diagnostic.

Irony is an extraordinarily cheap hedge against sincerity.

Until it isnt.

Eventually you can become so well hedged that nobody can really hurt you. Nobody can embarrass you. Nobody can reject anything you didnt fully expose. Nobody can take away something you insisted you never needed.

Very little downside.

A remarkably stable position.

There is only one problem.

Nobody can fully reach you either.

This is where the language of risk becomes inconvenient.

Because eliminating risk sounds intelligent.

Usually it is.

But risk and return have always been attached to one another.

We understand this perfectly in markets.

Nobody looks at a fully hedged portfolio and wonders why it isnt participating in all of the upside.

That was the structure. You surrendered something to remove something else.

Outside markets, we somehow expect different mathematics.

We want intimacy without vulnerability. Ambition without failure. Independence without uncertainty. Choice without closing alternatives. A meaningful life without exposing anything meaningful to loss.

There is probably no structure for that.

Or if there is, the premium is the thing itself.

I have run every hedge on this list at some point.

Some of them Im still running.

This doesnt mean every hedge should be removed. That would be a remarkably stupid lesson to take from finance.

Some risks should be hedged.

Some exposure should be reduced.

Some downside isnt worth accepting.

The question is whether the hedge still serves the position. Or whether the position now exists mostly to justify the hedge.

Whether protection is preserving your ability to eventually act. Or continuously discounting the future in which you supposedly will.

Whether the salary is financing the business. Or the business has become the story that makes the salary tolerable.

Whether emotional distance is giving you time. Or becoming your personality.

Whether optionality is preserving a decision. Or preventing one.

A hedge should change the distribution of outcomes. It shouldnt quietly become the outcome.

Protection is useful when it allows you to carry risk you otherwise couldnt. It becomes something else when eliminating the risk becomes more important than whatever made the risk worth taking.

Sometimes the hedge becomes the only profitable part of the trade.

Eventually you have to remember what the trade was.

Ive written about the carry trade before. Twice, actually. Once in a collaboration with Marc from Investing.Learning.Thriving, and independently in The Carry Trade You Never Heard Of, the institutional version, where the structure, the funding leg and the access layer determine who actually runs the position and at what cost.

But there is a version of negative carry that has nothing to do with institutional access.

Some of the worst positions I have seen were never large enough to force anyone out.

That was the problem.

The position was losing money. Just not enough. A little every day.

Not enough to trigger a risk limit.

Not enough to force the conversation.

Not enough to make someone finally admit the thesis had changed.

So the position stayed. And the carry continued.

In finance, carry is what you earn or pay simply for holding a position over time.

Sometimes the carry is positive. You get paid to wait. Sometimes it is negative. And every day you maintain the position costs you something.

The trade can still work. Your thesis can still eventually be right. But time is no longer neutral. You are paying for the privilege of finding out.

Traders understand this instinctively because the cost is visible. It appears in the pnl daily.

Life rarely marks the position for you.

Some positions charge us every day without ever sending a statement.

A job that pays too well to leave but takes slightly more from you every year.

A relationship that isnt bad enough to end.

A lifestyle that requires enough income to make every alternative feel irresponsible.

An obligation you agreed to years ago that still occupies part of your life because unwinding it would be more uncomfortable than maintaining it.

A habit that costs an hour every night.

None of them necessarily blow you up.

That is what makes them expensive.

You can afford the carry.

We tend to think affordability is evidence that something is sustainable.

It isnt.

Sometimes affordability is precisely what keeps a bad position alive. If the cost were unbearable, the decision would be made for you.

You would quit.

Leave.

Stop.

Change.

The position would force itself closed.

But tolerable costs behave differently.

They survive.

Five dollars doesnt matter.

An hour doesnt matter.

One more year doesnt matter.

A little resentment doesnt matter.

Another missed opportunity doesnt matter.

Until you realize you have been financing the same position for a decade.

And because you remained solvent the entire time, nothing ever forced you to ask whether the capital still belonged there.

That is where negative carry becomes harder to see. Because not every losing position has a negative mark.

You can make money in a career you should have left.

You can have good days in the wrong relationship.

You can become extremely successful at something you no longer want to do.

The position can look profitable while still carrying poorly.

Markets have a name for the other side of this.

Opportunity cost.

Capital committed to one position is capital unavailable for another. But opportunity cost never appears on the statement.

Life doesnt provide one either.

The years spent maintaining one identity dont show you the person you might have become without it.

The comfortable job doesnt mark itself against the business you never started.

The relationship that survived doesnt report the life that might have existed outside of it.

The habit doesnt invoice you for whatever could have occupied the same hour.

We only see the position we held. Never the full book of positions it prevented us from holding.

Some of the most expensive positions in life remain remarkably comfortable.

Comfort increases your capacity to carry them.

A failing career eventually creates urgency. A successful career you no longer want can finance itself indefinitely.

A catastrophic relationship forces a decision. A tolerable one can consume decades.

A destructive habit eventually announces itself. A manageable one can become part of your identity.

We usually worry about the positions we cannot afford to carry. Im starting to think the more interesting ones are the positions we can.

Because there is another assumption hidden inside negative carry.

That eventually something will change.

The position will recover.

Work will get better.

The relationship will become what it used to be.

The habit will disappear when life settles down. We will become less tired. Less busy. More disciplined. More willing to walk away.

So we keep paying.

Not because the position is working. Because the carry remains affordable and closing the position would turn possibility into fact.

Finance understands this problem too. Closing a position crystallizes what holding it allows you to keep theoretical. As long as the trade remains open, there is still a future in which you were right.

Sometimes we arent paying to preserve the position. We are paying to preserve that possibility. And there is nothing inherently wrong with carrying something through a difficult period.

Patience has value. Optionality has value.

Some of the best trades look wrong before they look right. The question is whether time is improving the position or merely making you more invested in defending it.

Whether the carry is buying optionality or simply another day without having to decide.

That distinction is difficult because negative carry rarely feels dramatic while you are paying it.

It feels manageable. And manageable has no natural expiration date.

The market eventually marks every position.

Life is less consistent.

Sometimes there is no margin call. No catalyst. No forced liquidation.

Nothing arrives to tell you the trade is over.

You just keep financing it.

Which may be why the most dangerous positions arent always the ones you cant afford to carry.

Sometimes theyre the ones you can.

One of the most important concepts in finance is present value.

The value of any asset is simply the sum of its future cash flows discounted back to today.

The further away and more uncertain those cash flows become, the less they are worth right now.

That reduction has a name.

The discount rate.

People often think of it as a formula.

It is really just an opinion about the future.

How much confidence should we have that what is promised will actually arrive?

Higher uncertainty.

Higher discount rate.

Lower present value.

Markets perform this calculation every day.

A company announces a product expected to generate billions of dollars ten years from now.

The projection sounds impressive.

The market doesnt simply ask how large those cash flows might become.

It asks how likely they are to arrive.

The story matters.

Confidence matters more.

Most people think this only applies to assets.

It doesnt.

Every decision you make quietly applies a discount rate to the future version of yourself.

The business youll eventually build.

The conversation youll eventually have.

The person youll eventually become.

The life youll eventually start living.

They all sound valuable in theory.

Until your own behavior begins repricing them.

Every comfortable habit.

Every deferred decision.

Every promise quietly made to yourself and quietly ignored.

None of them eliminate the future.

They simply increase the uncertainty that it ever arrives.

The future version of yourself still exists.

Its present value just keeps falling.

People assume the future becomes less valuable because time passed.

Usually it became less valuable because behavior kept raising the discount rate.

The math didnt change.

The assumptions did.

We arent only discounting the future.

Were financing the present with it.

We criticize leverage in finance while quietly living on it everywhere else.

Some people borrow money.

Others borrow time.

Others borrow against the person they hope theyll eventually become.

We live on borrowed assumptions and call them plans.

Not every deferred decision is debt.

Sometimes waiting preserves optionality.

The difference is whether tomorrow gives you more information or simply carries an obligation you refused to settle today.

Ill have more time next year.

Work will slow down.

Ill become more disciplined once things settle.

Well fix it later…

None of those statements are facts.

Theyre assumptions.

Theyre unsecured financing provided by a future that hasnt arrived yet.

Finance has a word for that.

Leverage.

The financing changes.

The trade doesnt.

The difficult part is that leverage doesnt eliminate payment.

It changes when payment arrives.

Life seems to operate the same way.

Borrowed sleep.

Deferred conversations.

Relationships maintained by future apologies.

Identities supported by future discipline.

None of the obligations disappear.

The settlement date simply moves.

That is why some costs feel so sudden.

They were accumulating quietly for years.

The future finally stopped extending credit.

On Wall Street, we call that a margin call.

Outside of Wall Street, we usually call it burnout.

Or divorce.

Or regret.

Or realizing the person you always planned to become has been repriced for so long that the narrative no longer matches the balance sheet.

Every instrument I spent years trading was ultimately designed to move something through time.

Cash flows.

Risk.

Obligations.

Ownership.

People seem to do the same thing.

We move responsibility into tomorrow.

We move hope into next year.

We move discipline into a future version of ourselves that always seems more capable than the present one.

The financing feels invisible.

Until the settlement date arrives.

The margin calls just happen on different schedules.

Most people think finance is about money.

Ive slowly started thinking it might be about time.

Every crowded trade eventually produces the same question, how did everyone stay so long?

The explanation is usually comforting.

People missed something.

They ignored the warning signs.

They became irrational.

It suggests the outcome could have been avoided if everyone had simply been smarter.

Reality is usually less dramatic.

Most people saw exactly what was happening.

They just simply had different incentives.

Managing institutional money changes the calculation.

You know valuations have stretched. Credit spreads no longer compensate for the risk. Leverage is creeping higher and liquidity is quietly disappearing.

None of this is hidden.

The data is available to everyone.

The difficult part is not recognizing the risk, the difficult part is leaving.

Markets dont pay for being early.

Clients compare quarterly returns.

Consultants rank managers against benchmarks.

Bonuses are measured annually.

If the trade continues for another 12 months, the manager who stayed looks brilliant.

The manager who left becomes the cautionary tale.

Not because they were wrong. Because they were early.

Career risk has a remarkable way of making market risk feel manageable.

What looks like conviction from the outside is often incentive preservation from the inside.

The manager is not simply deciding whether the trade is attractive.

They are deciding whether the risk of staying is greater than the professional cost of leaving.

Those are not the same calculation.

This is why identifying a crowded trade is easier than exiting one.

Everyone may agree on the risk.

Very few are paid to act on it at the same time.

Every crowded trade is ultimately a crowded incentive.

Markets are simply where the mechanism becomes easiest to see.

Most institutions operate the same way.

Everyone knows the meeting is unnecessary.

Yet nobody cancels it.

Everyone knows the product should have been discontinued years ago.

Everyone keeps supporting it.

Not because anyone lacks intelligence.

But because maintaining the system is usually safer than questioning why it still exists.

Spend enough time inside any institution and you see legitimate concerns and genuinely good ideas disappear for the same reason.

The argument was not weak.

The cost of agreeing with it was too high.

Before trying to convince anyone of anything, you have to map what it costs them to agree.

Agreement may require someone to admit they were wrong.

Challenge someone more senior.

Spend political capital.

The data did not change.

The willingness to act on it did.

People like to think organizations run on logic.

Most run on incentive preservation and risk displacement.

The person who identifies the problem assumes the risk of raising it.

The person who preserves the existing structure can usually distribute the consequences later.

One cost is immediate and personal.

The other is delayed and collective.

The system does not need anyone to choose failure.

It only needs each person to make the locally rational decision.

When the personal cost of doing the right thing exceeds the personal cost of doing nothing, the outcome is almost predetermined.

That is how broken structures survive.

Functional misalignment does not begin when reality changes.

It begins when responding to reality becomes more expensive than defending the existing structure.

The career that still performs well enough to avoid being questioned.

The identity that continues solving a problem that no longer exists.

The position you built your life around that never announces when it stops being the right one.

This is the institutional version.

The system can be visibly wrong and remain perfectly rational for everyone operating inside it.

That is why failure often appears sudden from the outside.

The warning signs were visible for years.

The people inside were not blind.

They were optimizing for something else.

From the outside, it looks irrational.

From the inside, it looks like survival.

The market was not crowded because nobody understood the risk.

It was crowded because everyone understood the incentives.

Markets were never the subject.

They were simply where the pattern became easiest to recognize.

I work inside one of these structures.

I understand the incentives.

I have watched myself optimize for them.

That is not a confession.

It is simply the honest version of the observation.

Understanding the incentive structure doesnt exempt you from it.

I understand the game well enough to resent it and well enough to know why I stay.

The market spends every day trying to compress uncertainty into a price.

Future expectations.

Interest rates.

Inflation.

Politics.

Wars.

Optimism.

Fear.

Millions of opinions reduced to a single number.

From a distance it almost looks like certainty.

It isnt.

Its simply the most current price anyone is willing to pay for not knowing.

Markets dont eliminate uncertainty.

They organize it.

That distinction has been quietly sitting in front of me for years.

Because the longer I work in finance, the less I think markets are unique in this sense.

I think its just another framework we built to live with something we have never been comfortable carrying.

The future.

The more I read, the more I realize the ancients were solving the same problem.

Not happiness.

Not success.

Uncertainty.

The Stoics built a philosophy around accepting what couldnt be controlled.

The Taoists built one around flowing with what couldnt be forced.

Christianity built one around trusting what couldnt be seen.

Markets built one around pricing what couldnt be known.

Different language.

Same problem.

None of these systems promised certainty.

They promised orientation.

Theres a difference.

Orientation doesnt tell you what tomorrow brings.

It tells you how to move even when tomorrow refuses to.

Somewhere along the way we changed the objective.

Instead of asking,

"How do I live well in the presence of uncertainty?" we started asking, "How do I eliminate it?"

Forecasts.

Models.

Optimization.

Diagnostics.

Planning.

Each useful.

None capable of delivering what we actually wanted.

Certainty.

Markets understand something most of us dont though.

Every forecast creates another forecast.

Every assumption creates another assumption.

Every model introduces another variable.

Every prediction expands the surface area for being wrong.

The unknown itself is finite.

Human imagination isnt.

I do exactly the same thing internally.

Mentally simulating conversations that never happen.

Failures that never arrive.

Arguments nobody ever makes.

Lives I never actually live.

I convince myself Im preparing.

Most of the time Im manufacturing additional futures that now require phantom attention and scenarios.

The market settles one outcome.

My imagination tries to settle all of them.

Thats an impossible accounting system.

Reality only ever asked me to survive one.

Ive spent years pricing uncertainty professionally.

And spent the same years manufacturing it personally.

Those turned out to be very different relationships with the same problem.

The more I read, the less I think humanitys greatest frameworks were trying to eliminate uncertainty.

They were trying to make it bearable.

Markets price it.

Stoicism accepts it.

Taoism flows with it.

Faith trusts through it.

Different language.

Same burden.

Maybe thats why they endure.

Not because they answer lifes biggest questions.

Because they stop asking them to disappear before life can begin.

I spent twenty minutes yesterday teaching an analyst legacy Excel formulas that still work today.

Halfway through the conversation I realized something that had nothing to do with Excel.

I havent asked anyone to teach me anything in years.

Not because there was nobody to ask or because I know everything.

Because if I dont know something, my instinct is to disappear until I do.

That strategy built a career.

It also taught me something I never intended to learn.

One of the stranger parts of getting older is realizing your greatest strengths deserve the same scrutiny as your weaknesses.

Weaknesses announce themselves.

Strengths get promoted.

Nobody questions the habits that produce results.

Least of all the person performing them.

Somewhere along the way, competence stopped being a skill.

It became a way of moving through the world.

Figure it out.

Carry it yourself.

Dont become someone elses problem.

The strange thing about survival strategies is they rarely feel like strategies while youre living them.

They just feel like personality.

Markets reward this kind of behavior.

The person who doesnt need constant direction gets trusted.

The person who quietly solves problems gets more responsibility.

The person who carries the work becomes indispensable.

Institutions reward what produces results.

They dont ask where it came from.

Neither do we.

Thats the part I been thinking about.

Nobody ever sat me down and said, "You should stop asking for help."

I dont remember making that decision.

I think the environment made it for me.

When the fastest path to competence is figuring it out yourself, eventually you stop seeing help as part of the process.

You start seeing it as evidence the process failed.

The market has a name for this.

Regime Change.

A strategy works. Capital flows toward it. It gets repeated. Optimized. Scaled.

Until one day it stops.

Not because it was wrong.

Because the environment that rewarded it no longer exists.

The operating system kept running anyway.

The strange thing is we naturally accept regime changes immediately in markets.

And how rarely we recognize them in ourselves.

We keep running the behaviors that once protected us long after they stop protecting us.

Sometimes they even keep producing results.

Thats what makes them so difficult to question.

Success has a way of disguising outdated code.

The inverse is also true.

The traits that got labeled as problems in certain rooms turned out to be the most valuable ones in others.

The restlessness that made structured environments uncomfortable.

The pattern recognition that reads as paranoia until the pattern proves out.

The inability to stop noticing what doesnt fit.

Those werent weaknesses waiting to be managed.

They were strengths waiting for the right environment.

The label was never absolute.

It was always situational.

I dont think self reliance is the problem.

It built a career Im genuinely proud of.

It taught me how to think independently.

How to solve problems.

How to trust my own judgment.

The question isnt whether it worked.

The question is whether Ive mistaken something that was once necessary for something that must always remain true.

I built most of what Im proud of by disappearing until I figured it out.

Im beginning to wonder if I confused the strategy with the person.

Growth probably has less to do with acquiring new strengths and more to do with recognizing when old ones quietly stopped serving the environment they were built for.

Not every adaptation deserves a lifetime appointment.

Some were simply successful enough to outlive the conditions that created them.

Thats what makes them so difficult to let go.

The most dangerous habits arent the ones that fail.

Theyre the ones that succeed for so long  you stop remembering they were ever adaptations at all.

I try to steer the page away from direct market mechanics unless I can find a way to reframe it back to something personal or self aware, like the note on the 5s30s steepening and what that spread meant beyond the curve.

But here it is anyway.

Most people who talk about carry trades are talking about spot FX. Borrow in a low rate currency, convert to a high rate currency, collect the differential, hope the exchange rate doesnt move against you enough to erase it. Simple in concept. Brutal in execution. Available to anyone with a margin account and a tolerance for being wrong at the worst possible time.

That version of carry is the retail version. Its volatile, its exposed, and it carries the particular cruelty of a strategy that works slowly and unwinds fast.

Theres another version. It runs through the derivatives market, it requires an ISDA, and it converts what would otherwise be a naked speculative FX position into a structured financing instrument with institutional grade terms, embedded leverage, and cleaner balance sheet treatment. Its called a cross currency swap (Xccy Swap) specifically, one with the final exchange left open and the reason you probably havent heard of it is that it wasnt built for you.

What It Actually Is

A cross currency swap is simultaneously a borrowing, a lending, and a hedge executed as a single instrument between two counterparties who agree to exchange principal and interest payments in different currencies over a defined tenor.

At inception, principal exchanges hands at the prevailing spot rate. Throughout the life of the trade, interest payments flow in opposite directions, one party paying in currency A, the other in currency B. In a standard, fully hedged cross currency swap, the principal also exchanges back at maturity at the original rate, eliminating FX risk on the notional entirely.

This version does something different. The final exchange is left floating.

That single structural choice is what makes the trade work and what makes it dangerous. Understanding why requires understanding what you give up when you close it

Why You Cant Lock the Final Exchange and Keep the Carry

This is where most explanations of cross currency swaps stop making sense, so its worth being precise.

If you fix both the initial and final principal exchange, locking the USD/JPY rate at inception and at maturity you fully hedged your FX exposure. No currency risk on the principal. Clean, symmetrical, textbook.

The problem is that the forward points price in the rate differential. Covered Interest Parity the relationship that prevents arbitrage between spot FX rates, forward FX rates, and interest rate differentials across currencies closes the trade. The market charges you for the privilege of knowing what rate youll get back at maturity, and what it charges is approximately equal to the rate advantage you thought you were getting by borrowing in JPY rather than USD.

Lock the final exchange, and your all in cost converges back toward USD funding rates. The cheap JPY borrowing disappears into the hedge. You traded currency risk for rate certainty and ended up where you started.

The carry only exists because the final exchange is open. Youre long USD/JPY on the notional at maturity, unhedged, by design. Thats not a side effect of the structure. Its the source of the return.

The JPY Structure

The current rate environment makes the JPY version particularly instructive.

SOFR sits at approximately 3.62%. TONAR, the Tokyo Overnight Average Rate, Japans post LIBOR benchmark is roughly 1%. That 262 basis point differential is the raw material.

A UHNW client or institutional borrower who needs USD funding has the obvious path: a traditional USD loan at SOFR plus credit spread, call it 275 basis points over, landing somewhere around 6.37% all in. Underwriting, covenants, collateral requirements, the standard terms.

The alternative is more interesting.

Borrow in JPY at TONAR, currently around 1% using existing foreign assets, foreign holdings, or overseas cash flows as the economic rationale. Enter a JPY/USD cross currency swap: pay fixed JPY, receive floating USD SOFR. The swap converts JPY funding into USD exposure. The final principal exchange is left open.

The result is a synthetic USD borrowing cost that begins with a 1 handle. The mechanics are more complex. The terms are substantially better. And the USD/JPY rate at maturity is your problem.

What the Structure Actually Looks Like

At inception: deliver JPY, receive USD at spot. Initial exchange is fixed.

During the life of the trade: pay fixed JPY TONAR (funded by the cheap JPY borrowing), receive floating SOFR. Positive carry accrues each reset period, the rate differential working in your favor in steady, predictable increments.

At maturity: return USD, receive JPY, but at whatever spot rate prevails on that date. Not the rate you locked at inception. Whatever the market is doing when the clock runs out.

This is the position in plain language: you are long USD/JPY on the full notional of the trade, carrying positive rate income of roughly 262 basis points annually, for the entire tenor. The carry is real and consistent. The FX exposure is real and unbounded.

P&L = Rate Carry + FX Move on Notional.

The first term accrues quietly. The second can arrive all at once.

What Can Go Wrong

The math on a simple example is clarifying.

Assume $100mm notional. Annual carry at current rates: roughly $2.5-3mm. USD/JPY drops 10% before maturity, meaning the dollar weakens against the yen, and buying back your JPY principal costs more in USD terms. FX loss: approximately $10mm. Net: negative $5.5mm, against what looked like a clean carry position on paper.

One bad FX move erases multiple years of carry. The structure is short volatility whether you think of it that way or not. Carry accrues in small, steady increments. FX moves arrive in large, sudden ones. That asymmetry is the defining characteristic of the trade.

Basis risk adds a subtler layer. Cross currency swaps embed a USD/JPY basis spread, the market premium for USD liquidity versus JPY at any given moment. Your true carry is SOFR minus TONAR minus basis, not the headline differential. That basis moves, sometimes violently. It widened sharply during COVID, again during the 2022 JPY dislocation when the Bank of Japan held yield curve control while the rest of the world tightened. Entry levels and ongoing valuation are both affected in ways the top line rate comparison obscures.

Liquidity and funding stress tend to hit all 3 simultaneously. When USD funding tightens, the basis widens, and FX moves violently, they dont queue up politely. The position that looked like a stable carry trade in normal conditions becomes a correlated loss across every dimension at once.

Why It Exists

The cross currency swap market wasnt built to help retail investors access yield differentials. It was built to allow multinationals to fund foreign subsidiaries efficiently, allow sovereign wealth funds to deploy capital across borders without unnecessary FX friction, and allow institutional borrowers to arbitrage funding costs across global rate markets in ways that require legal infrastructure, creditworthy counterparties, and minimum notional sizes that most participants simply dont reach.

The ISDA agreement is a filtering mechanism before anything else gets discussed. The ability to negotiate custom tenors, cashflow schedules, amortization or bullet structures, fixed or floating combinations, these arent features available on a term sheet you found online. Theyre the architecture of a market that was designed for a specific participant profile and has remained that way.

The version of carry most people know is available in any retail FX account. It runs on leverage, its structurally designed to punish anyone who cant absorb a drawdown, and it puts the full USD/JPY spot risk on someone who has no natural offset against it.

The version described above puts the same USD/JPY spot risk on someone who has foreign assets, foreign cash flows, or institutional hedging capacity that makes the open FX exposure manageable or at least, more manageable than the alternative. The carry isnt free in either case. But the terms around it are different, the leverage is cleaner, and the balance sheet treatment is more favorable.

Same underlying bet. Different infrastructure. Different universe of who gets to make it on those terms.

The differential in outcomes between those two versions isnt really about sophistication. Its about access. And access, as always, is a function of something that has nothing to do with how well you understand the trade.

One of the first things markets teach you is that risk never sleeps.

The New York desk signs off.

Asia signs on.

Hong Kong eventually hands it to London.

London gives it back to New York.

The position never stopped existing.

Only the person managing it changed.

The market doesnt eliminate uncertainty.

It redistributes it.

For years I thought that lesson belonged only to finance.

Now Im not so sure.

The desk closes.

The body keeps managing the risk anyway.

The meeting ends.

The commute begins.

Dinner finishes.

The emails stop.

Nothing requires action anymore.

But the nervous system never got the message.

It is still scanning for the catalyst.

Still pricing the tail scenario.

Still managing a position that has already been handed off.

The trade youre watching isnt in the book anymore.

Its in your head.

Thats the version of overnight risk that never appears on a blotter.

What nobody tells you is that conditioning doesnt settle when the position does.

The environment that shaped you eventually stops requiring certain behaviors.

You continue performing them anyway.

The operating system keeps running long after the session ends.

Markets compress this lesson into real time.

Every position gets repriced continuously.

Every assumption gets challenged.

Every thesis eventually encounters reality.

Very quickly you learn there comes a point where your influence over the outcome approaches zero.

The thesis has been expressed.

The position is on.

From there, the market negotiates with reality.

You still watch.

You still update probabilities.

But the outcome no longer belongs to you.

Only your response to it does.

Most of us never notice where that line actually is.

Then something even stranger starts happening.

We begin managing positions we never actually held.

Every trading floor has someone I always called Johnny Hindsight.

He was long before the rally.

Short before the crash.

Perfectly sized every position.

He has one of the greatest track records in financial history.

Strangely, nobody has ever seen him place a trade while the market was actually open.

He only appears after it closes.

Life has its own version.

The career you obviously should have left.

The investment everyone now agrees was inevitable.

Johnny never carried overnight risk.

He inherited the chart after uncertainty disappeared.

Phantom outcomes are emotionally perfect because they never encountered reality.

No volatility.

No drawdowns.

No mornings where conviction quietly negotiated with fear before the opening bell.

Markets taught me something uncomfortable.

Most people remember their lives the same way.

Not as they experienced them.

As they would have experienced them if todays information had existed yesterday.

We judge former versions of ourselves against information we never possessed.

Thats not wisdom. Thats accounting fiction.

Markets have a word for what actually happened. Repricing.

The asset didnt suddenly become different.

The information set did.

Price simply caught up.

Markets never apologize for repricing.

They simply incorporate new information.

People call the same process regret.

People experience identity the same way.

Not gradually.

Usually violently.

One resignation.

One diagnosis.

One conversation.

One child.

One unexpected success.

One funeral.

An entire version of yourself gets marked against information that didnt exist the day before.

The painful part isnt that reality changed.

Its realizing your nervous system is still managing yesterdays position.

The role ended.

The vigilance stayed.

The environment changed.

The operating system didnt.

Every institution eventually does the same thing.

Books rotate.

Mandates change.

Titles disappear.

Nobody announces the moment your role quietly became different.

The difficult transition was never technical.

It was psychological.

Knowing when your part of the flow was complete.

Not because you failed.

Not because the thesis was wrong.

Simply because reality no longer required your involvement in the same way.

Markets eventually teach every trader the same lesson.

There comes a point where managing the position becomes indistinguishable from interfering with it.

More activity doesnt create more control.

It only preserves the illusion that your agency still exists.

Life has those moments too.

The conversation ends.

The apology gets delivered.

The child grows up.

The article gets published.

The decision gets made.

Reality quietly continues without asking whether youre emotionally prepared for it.

Markets dont struggle with repricing.

People do.

The data changes.

The market moves.

Identity negotiates.

Sometimes for years.

Maybe thats the hidden cost of becoming good at anything.

You spend years learning how to carry responsibility.

Almost nobody teaches you how to recognize the precise moment it no longer belongs to you.

The real skill was never conviction.

It was recognizing when your part was over.

Then allowing reality to continue without you.

There is a hobby called Live Action Role Playing, or LARPing.

People spend weekends dressed as medieval knights, kings and wizards, carrying foam swords through public parks while acting inside fictional worlds everyone involved knows are fictional.

Most people laugh at them. Not because theyre pretending. Because their costume is visible.

The knight knows the sword isnt real.

The wizard knows the beard came from Amazon.

The king knows the crown is plastic.

Everyone involved understands theyre participating in a performance.

They just might be some of the most honest people in society.

The difference between the person in foam armor and everyone else is surprisingly small.

The consultant.

The executive.

The founder.

The portfolio manager.

The creator.

The politician.

The professor.

Every role comes with its own language, posture, confidence and uniform.

The costume just happens to be tailored better.

One of the stranger realizations about modern life is how little of it runs directly on reality anymore.

Most systems now operate on narrative continuity.

Markets.

Politics.

Corporate culture.

Media.

Institutions.

Identity itself.

Reality still matters. Eventually.

But between those moments of reconciliation exists an enormous amount of psychological space where confidence, perception and collective storytelling determine how long something continues functioning before anyone is forced to confront what it actually is.

That space has become its own economy.

Modern institutions understand this instinctively.

Companies arent valued only on cash flows.

Theyre valued on the durability of the story surrounding those cash flows.

Future positioning.

Competitive moat.

Vision.

Optionality.

Market confidence.

Entire industries survive on projected inevitability long before the economics underneath them deserve it.

People work exactly the same way.

Careers increasingly depend on maintaining coherent versions of ourselves.

Competent.

Decisive.

Leader.

Visionary.

Culture fit.

Expert.

The performance becomes infrastructure.

The movie.

The theater.

The audience.

The usher.

Everyone has a role.

Most never notice they are wearing a costume.

Thats the part nobody talks about.

At first the role serves you.

Eventually the role begins supporting everything else.

The mortgage assumes the income.

The income assumes the title.

The title assumes the institution.

The institution assumes the performance.

Long before anyone notices, the costume stopped being clothing.

It became structural.

This is why authenticity has become such a strange modern obsession.

People spend enormous amounts of energy trying to discover their “real self.”

Im not convinced there is one.

I think there are only performances we have repeated long enough that they stopped feeling performative.

The consultant who naturally speaks in frameworks.

The banker who no longer notices the calibration in his language.

The creator who unconsciously optimizes thoughts for algorithms before they even finished thinking them.

Adaptation rarely feels like adaptation while its happening.

It simply becomes personality.

Markets reveal this faster than anywhere else.

One of the more misunderstood features of markets is that price doesnt simply respond to fundamentals.

Price often reflects collective willingness to continue participating in a story.

Entire bubbles survive because enough participants believe someone else will continue believing tomorrow.

Entire collapses accelerate because confidence itself was one of the underlying assets.

The narrative wasnt adjacent to the system.

The narrative was the system.

Life behaves similarly.

Relationships continue because two people maintain a shared version of reality.

Institutions continue because enough people keep acting as though they should.

Professional identities continue because everyone benefits from pretending they remain coherent.

The costume isnt hiding the structure anymore.

The costume became the structure.

This is why sophisticated ignorance rarely looks ignorant.

It looks highly intelligent.

Highly articulate.

Highly credentialed.

Beautifully explained.

The complexity itself becomes evidence that nobody should question the simple thing underneath it.

Thats the business model.

Make the explanation complicated enough and people stop asking whether the mechanism ever made sense in the first place.

The uncomfortable realization is that nobody escapes this.

Not institutions.

Not markets.

Not creators.

Not me.

The difference was never between performance and authenticity.

Everything is performance.

The difference is whether you noticed which costume youre wearing.

The LARPer already has.

Most of us are still introducing ourselves by the characters name.

Markets eventually mark stories to reality.

Life eventually does the same.

The only difference is markets settle every day.

People settle decades later.

Long after the costume stopped feeling like a costume.

Long after the performance became infrastructure.

And by then introducing yourself by the characters name almost feels natural.

Nobody builds an illiquid life on purpose.

Thats what makes it dangerous.

Most of us understand liquidity perfectly well in markets. We understand that a position can be worth one thing on paper and something entirely different the moment we actually need to sell it. We understand that size, concentration and exit liquidity all matter.

Then we spend decades building lives that violate every principle we would apply to a portfolio.

The trap isnt usually emotional. Its structural.

The mortgage was reasonable.

The school district was reasonable.

The larger house was reasonable.

The promotion was reasonable and earned.

The lifestyle adjustment was reasonable.

The deferred compensation package was reasonable.

Every individual decision made sense. The aggregate position didnt.

Most of us dont wake up trapped. We wake up concentrated.

At first the position is small.

You can leave the city, change careers, take a risk or start over.

The liquidity exists. Then the size grows.

A spouse, children, tuition.

A mortgage that assumes the current income. A lifestyle that assumes the next bonus. Deferred compensation that vests in 24 months. A professional network tied to a specific institution.

None of these are mistakes. And thats the uncomfortable part.

The position wasnt built recklessly. It was built rationally, one reasonable decision at a time. The problem is that rational decisions compound just as efficiently as irrational ones.

At some point the life develops its own balance sheet.

The mortgage requires the income.

The income requires the job.

The job requires the identity.

The identity requires the performance.

And suddenly what looked like freedom from the outside starts behaving a lot like leverage.

Markets have a term for this, its illiquid. Not because the thesis was wrong or the asset is worthless. But because exiting itself becomes the risk.

Selling moves the price. The act of leaving creates the loss.

Most people eventually discover the same dynamic in their own lives.

The question stops being "Do I want to leave?" and becomes "Can I afford to?"

Those are not the same question.

The first is psychological. The second is structural. Thats where most discussions about freedom quietly break down.

We assume the limiting factor is courage.

Usually it isnt. Usually its liquidity.

The entrepreneur with no obligations has liquidity. The executive with three children, two mortgages, deferred compensation, private school tuition and a lifestyle calibrated to a 7 figure income has a very different balance sheet.

Both may want the same thing.

Only one can move immediately.

The other has to negotiate with the structure.

I know this because I am the other one.

The deferred compensation vests in cycles. The mortgage and cars assume the income. Tuition, camps, private lessons and whatever else assume the bonus. The school district assumes the address. The identity assumes the institution, the one that gets introduced at conferences, the one that opens certain rooms and closes others.

I built it the same way everyone else does. One reasonable decision at a time. Each one making sense in isolation. The aggregate position quietly becoming something I would never have agreed to on day one if I could have seen the whole structure from the beginning.

I dont say this as regret. The position performs, the life functions, the numbers work.

But thats the problem.

This is why optionality is one of the most misunderstood forms of wealth.

People measure wealth through accumulation. I think its better measured through mobility.

How many decisions can you still make?

How many directions can you still move?

How much of your future is already spoken for?

The strange thing is that success often reduces optionality faster than failure does.

Failure forces adaptation. Success encourages expansion.

More commitments. More obligations. More fixed costs. More things that require the current version of reality to continue indefinitely.

The position grows. The liquidity shrinks.

Nobody notices because the pnl still looks good. Until one day they do. Not because anything collapsed. Because they finally ask themselves a simple question:

"If I wanted to leave tomorrow, could I?"

Most of us already know the answer. Thats why we stop asking.

The expensive part isnt becoming trapped. Its continuing to add size after you realized you are.

The deferred compensation grows. The lifestyle expands. The exit cost increases.

Every year the position becomes slightly harder to unwind than the year before.

Not because anyone forced it to. Because thats what concentrated positions do.

The irony is that none of this feels dangerous while its happening. The numbers all work. The life looks successful. The structure functions.

Thats usually the problem.

Nobody builds an illiquid life on purpose.

We build it the same way every concentrated position gets built. One reasonable decision at a time.

The danger isnt that any single decision was wrong.

The danger is that by the time you understand the aggregate position, the exit was always available.

Just not at a price anyone would have agreed to on day one

Up until recently, I used to think time moved slowly.

Maybe not slowly exactly. More like it existed somewhere in the background while I chased whatever came next.

The next goal. The next promotion. The next milestone. The next version of myself that was finally supposed to feel accomplished.

The strange thing is that every time I arrived somewhere, the finish line quietly moved again.

Whatever I thought would create satisfaction usually just created a new target.

I dont know exactly what I was chasing. Validation maybe or self worth, some version of happiness that always seemed to exist one achievement further into the future.

Fatherhood changed that.

Now it feels like years disappear overnight.

What I realized is that we rarely notice our own growth. Even when it happens, it feels incremental. Day to day were too close to it. We wake up as ourselves every morning, so the changes become invisible.

Children dont allow that illusion.

They make time visible.

One minute theyre learning how to walk. The next theyre running ahead of you. One day youre teaching them how to throw. Then eventually youre watching them throw gas into your glove.

A while back I wrote something about playing catch with my son:

Started a few feet apart. Every year the distance between us widens a little more. Funny how the spread widening is actually the relationship getting closer.

What I realized recently is that eventually the curve turns.

And one day without anybody announcing it, the spread starts tightening again for entirely different reasons than when it began. Not because we moved. Because one of us is.

Eventually time reprices both participants differently.

Children do something else too.

Someday theyre going to figure you out.

Not the version of you that exists in your own head.

The actual one.

The type of spouse you are. The type of parent you are. How you treat other people when nobody benefits from being kind. How you respond when things don’t go your way. How much effort you put into the people you claim matter most.

Children spend years watching before they spend years understanding.

By the time they finally understand, theyve already absorbed more than you realize.

Maybe thats another reason time starts moving differently once you become a parent. Youre no longer just watching someone else grow. You realize someone is quietly watching you grow too.

The older I get, the more I think life is mostly this.

Not the milestones.

Not the promotions.

Not the things we spend years believing will finally make us feel complete.

Just time moving quietly through ordinary moments while we’re busy looking somewhere else.

A walk around the block. Building blocks on the floor. Coloring at the kitchen table. A random laugh youll forget five minutes later but somehow remember twenty years from now.

The moments themselves never feel important while theyre happening. And thats what makes them dangerous.

You assume there will be more.

Then one day you realize those ordinary moments were the thing.

Happiness rarely lives inside the grand milestones alone.

It lives in dinners together. Inside jokes. Lazy Sundays. Quiet mornings. Little traditions nobody else understands.

Those moments become a life.

Dont live for social media.

Dont perform happiness for strangers.

Live for yourselves.

Protect what belongs to you.

Share your life with the people who genuinely want to be part of it.

Hold onto the little moments.

Theyre usually the ones time takes first.

To God be the glory.

Only the mistakes are ours.

Theres an old dynamic from royal courts that doesnt get discussed enough in the context of modern institutional life.

The jester was the only person in the room permitted to tell the truth. Not because the king valued honesty but because the costume made the honesty safe. The performance was the permission slip. Say the uncomfortable thing, but say it in motley, say it as a joke, say it in a way that gives everyone in the room plausible deniability about whether you meant it.

The jester wasnt the fool.

The jester was the only one who fully understood the room.

I work in finance. Not the movie version. Not men screaming into telephones throwing chairs across trading floors. I head an FX and FICC OTC desk where I primarily trade rates, a part of the market most non institutional do not even know exists. But its all the same, most meetings, calibrated language, selectively expressed conviction and dealing with other very intelligent people all managing the psychological discomfort of uncertainty with an increasingly sophisticated vocabulary.

The further up the chain you go, the less the job resembles the thing its supposed to be doing. At a certain level it stops being about the actual work and becomes almost entirely about performance.

Promises get made in rooms Im not in.

I find out about them when someone needs them delivered.

The top of the house sells whatever is possible in theory. Everyone else figures out whats possible in reality and delivers the bad news quietly enough that it doesnt become a problem for the people who made the promise in the first place.

This is not unique to finance. Its just more visible there because the gap between what gets said and what gets built eventually has a price attached to it.

The strange thing about institutions is how quickly they teach you which parts of yourself are useful and which parts require editing.

Nobody explicitly tells you or what to change though.

You just slowly notice what gets rewarded.

You start adjusting the certainty of your language instinctively depending on who is listening. You learn which observations are career enhancing and which ones are professionally expensive. You develop an increasingly refined ability to communicate things without fully saying them.

Eventually you realize a large percentage of modern professionalism is really just socially acceptable identity management.

The role starts as something you play.

Then it starts playing you.

But not dramatically. Not through any single moment you could point to afterward. Just gradually, through repetition and reward, the performance and the performer become harder to distinguish. The language you adopted for the room becomes the language you think in. The hierarchy you navigated becomes the hierarchy you believe in. The identity you constructed for acceptance starts feeling like the identity you actually have.

The institution doesnt change you through force. It changes you through reward.

After enough years most people stop performing the role.

They become it.

Markets make this impossible to ignore because markets are just the institution made explicit and measurable. Performative, narrative driven, hierarchical and psychologically violent in the specific way that only something exposing your decision making in real time can be.

The people inside them long enough dont just trade markets.

They start resembling them.

Performing conviction they dont entirely feel about outcomes they cant entirely predict. Believing something completely while hedging against it quietly. Managing the gap between what they say and what they actually think with increasing sophistication.

And the strange thing is this isnt really cynicism, its adaptation. Rational, efficient adaptation to an environment that rewards it consistently enough that the behavior stops feeling performative at all.

Not corruption. Not weakness. Just highly intelligent people adapting brilliantly to a system they no longer fully believe in while continuing to participate because the participation itself became so embedded into our identity and survival that leaving stopped feeling like a choice and started feeling like self destruction.

Im no better.

Im still here. I still do the work. Execution, structuring, the actual delivery of whatever gets promised in those rooms Im not in. That part I dont compromise on.

But Id be lying if I said the costume fits the same way it used to.

The permission to speak truth was always really permission to be ignored.

The jester always knew what was happening in the room.

He still showed up wearing the costume anyway.

I have been thinking a lot lately about how aggressively modern life tries to remove uncertainty.

Not reduce it. Eliminate it entirely.

Every inconvenience optimized away. Every unanswered question immediately searchable. Every moment of boredom interrupted before it fully arrives.

An entire civilization slowly engineering itself around the avoidance of friction.

At first this sounds like progress. Maybe it is. In many ways life has objectively become easier, faster and more efficient than at any point in human history.

But Im starting to wonder if we’ve confused removing difficulty with improving experience.

Because the strange thing about friction is that it was never just an obstacle. A lot of the time it was the thing creating the meaning in the first place.

I think markets accidentally explain this better than most things.

The market is constantly trying to compress uncertainty down into price. Future expectations, risks, assumptions, fears and optimism all discounted back into a present value.

But every attempt to predict the future usually creates more surface area for uncertainty, not less. Every forecast introduces another assumption. Another variable. Another way to be wrong.

The unknown itself is finite.

Human imagination is infinite.

And I think people do this internally without realizing it constantly.

We obsess over future outcomes because uncertainty feels psychologically unbearable. We mentally simulate every possible scenario ahead of time hoping that if we think hard enough we can somehow reduce the discomfort of not knowing.

But most of the time we just create more narratives to manage. More futures to fear. More imagined versions of reality to compare ourselves against. More opportunities for life to fail matching the script we already wrote in our heads.

Almost all of our anxiety comes from there. Not reality itself. The endless projection beyond it.

The irony is that uncertainty and friction might actually be where most meaning comes from.

Nobody remembers the outcome as vividly as they remember the pursuit.

You remember the anticipation. The uncertainty. The struggle. The slow becoming of something.

Humans live inside narratives far more than we live inside results.

Winning the lottery sounds incredible in theory. But how much of human fulfillment actually comes from movement toward something rather than possession of it once it arrives?

If someone air dropped you onto the peak of a mountain, is that psychologically the same as climbing it?

Technically you reached the top.

But the narrative is gone.

The effort is gone.

The resistance is gone.

The relationship between you and the achievement changes entirely. The outcome is identical. The experience is completely different. And the experience was actually the part that mattered.

Somewhere along the way efficiency stopped being the byproduct and became the goal itself.

Now we optimize everything. Schedules, attention, productivity, relationships,  and even our thoughts. All of it running cleaner, faster, more frictionless than before.

At some point friction itself stopped being viewed as a necessary part of experience and started being treated like a design flaw.

AI feels like the natural conclusion of that mindset.

Not because intelligence itself is inherently the problem. But because it removes friction at a scale we’ve never encountered before.

Why struggle through uncertainty when an answer arrives instantly? Why sit with boredom long enough for curiosity to return when stimulation is always one swipe away?

Slot machines figured out the underlying mechanic long before the internet did. The reward doesn’t need to arrive consistently, just occasionally, just unpredictably enough to keep you pulling. Platforms are built on the same logic. Infinite scroll, variable likes, algorithmic feeds designed to keep the loop running without ever fully satisfying it.

Permanently stimulated. Rarely satisfied. The two were never unrelated.

But there’s something else happening underneath the AI story that doesn’t get discussed enough.

AI doesn’t just remove friction. It actively compresses individual variance.

Think about it statistically. If you’re in the bottom half of any skill, writing, coding, analysis, creative thinking, whatever, AI makes you meaningfully better almost immediately. The floor rises. The gap closes. Outcomes improve.

But if you’re in the top half and you spent years developing genuine depth, judgment and an original way of seeing the world, AI quietly pulls you back toward the mean. Not dramatically but just enough that your edge starts blurring at the margins. The thing that made your thinking distinct slowly gets averaged out against everyone else prompting the same model with similar inputs.

It regresses everyone back toward the center and calls it progress.

Which means the more dependent we become on it, the more we collectively trend toward a kind of sophisticated mediocrity. Competent. Efficient. Indistinguishable.

The market equivalent would be a world where everything slowly converges toward the same price regardless of underlying quality. Efficient on the surface. But a market that stops rewarding genuine distinction eventually stops producing it.

At some point you have to ask whether we’re speeding up the process or quietly removing ourselves from it altogether.

Because the emotional attachment doesn’t come from the outcome. It comes from the effort.

A book discovered randomly at a local bookstore feels fundamentally different than clicking buy on Amazon.

Same object. Completely different experience.

One becomes inventory.

The other becomes memory.

The friction was the point.

And I think the same erosion is happening internally now.

People are increasingly overstimulated while feeling less connected to anything deeply meaningful. The phone is always closer than the discomfort. Boredom became intolerable somewhere along the way which is unfortunate, because boredom was one of the last remaining conditions where reflection, curiosity and original thought could naturally return.

Now the silence gets interrupted before the mind ever resets back to baseline.

I’m not separating myself from any of this.

I reach for distraction constantly. I optimize. I overanalyze. I try to mentally price futures that don’t exist yet. I interrupt boredom before it has time to become anything. I chase outcomes while quietly forgetting the process was probably the thing I actually wanted all along.

Maybe that’s the real cost.

Not that life got harder to navigate.

But that we slowly traded the only parts of life that were ever going to matter for the comfort of arriving faster at a destination that feels like nothing once we get there.

The friction was never the obstacle.

It was the whole thing.

Lately I’ve been thinking about how soulless everything feels.

Not in some dramatic society is collapsing way, though maybe it is, but more like a slow dimming than a collapse.

Just this growing sense that everything is becoming increasingly interchangeable.

Homes identical to their neighbor.

Buildings made entirely of glass.

Cold minimalist interiors.

Coffee shops designed like Apple stores.

Local places slowly turning into branded abstractions of themselves.

Even people starting to feel curated in similar ways.

Same clothes.

Same opinions.

Same aesthetics.

Same “life changing” books bought because someone online said it changed theirs.

Half of modern shopping barely even feels connected to wanting something anymore. It feels more like boredom mixed with identity construction.

Buying things for a version of yourself you want other people to recognize.

A book that’ll never be read sitting on a coffee table. Purchased more as a prop than something to be experienced. 

Furniture chosen more for signaling than comfort.

Entire personalities assembled through algorithmic exposure and replicated taste, then performed back to the same algorithm that built them.

And the strange part is convenience slowly removed the emotional texture from life while simultaneously making everything easier. Nobody really warned us those weren’t the same thing.

Buying a book on Amazon feels fundamentally different than randomly finding one in a small bookstore while traveling somewhere you’ll probably never visit again.

One becomes inventory.

The other becomes memory.

Same object. Completely different relationship to it.

I think people underestimate how much meaning used to come from friction, locality and physical experience.

The slight inconvenience was the meaning.

The detour was the point.

Now almost everything arrives frictionless, instantly replaceable and disconnected from any real sense of memory or discovery. Optimized so thoroughly that the experience of getting something has been engineered out of actually having it.

And I notice this in myself more than anywhere else.

I can recognize all of it clearly. The performance, the curation, the filling of space with things that signal rather than satisfy. I’m not immune to any of it. I just can’t stop seeing it, which might be its own kind of problem.

Maybe that’s the real cost of optimization nobody talks about.

Not that life got worse.

Just that it got quieter in the ways that used to matter.

Maybe meaning was never in the destination.

Convenience gave us everything faster but quietly removed the feeling of arriving there.

For those unfamiliar, it’s basically a morning snapshot of swap spreads, curve steepening and flattening, discounted callable structures, economic releases, market positioning and trying to translate current risk, pricing and expectations across the rates landscape into something understandable.

I’ve been writing and sending it out for over two years now and somewhere along the way I realized I probably think about my own life through the exact same framework.

The distance between where things are and where they’re expected to go.
Short-term reactions vs long-term positioning.
Stress points. Dislocations. Inversions.
Whether things are converging toward alignment or quietly drifting further apart underneath the surface.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the person I would like to be and the person I currently am, and the spread between those two.

How badly do I actually want to become the best version of myself?
And how much discomfort, discipline and sustained effort am I genuinely willing to tolerate to get there?

Most of the time, instead of materially changing anything, I just overanalyze my thoughts and quietly observe whether the curve is flattening or steepening depending on how honestly I’m living, how much I’m avoiding, distracting, rationalizing or actually confronting. I touched on this a bit in my first post.

But I guess life behaves similarly to markets in that there’s never just one direction. Expectations change. Sentiment shifts. Momentum fades. Risk reprices. Your actions and thoughts become their own form of forward guidance similar to forward pricing and dislocations to spot. 

Some periods of life the curve flattens. Your actions, values and internal world feel relatively aligned.

Other periods you become painfully aware of the person you could be while simultaneously watching yourself continue habits and patterns pulling you further away from it.

I think a lot of internal suffering probably comes from there.

Not ignorance. Awareness.

I genuinely think a large percentage of modern life is just people finding increasingly sophisticated and completely mindless ways to avoid being alone with themselves for more than 5 minutes.

Music in the car.
Podcasts on the walk.
YouTube in the shower.
TikTok while eating.
Netflix while scrolling Instagram.
Scrolling Instagram while watching the Yankees.
Group chats.
Notifications.
“Content.”

An entire civilization slowly engineering itself away from stillness because silence now feels psychologically threatening.

I couldn’t even make it through Sinners a few weeks back without checking my phone halfway through for movie analysis, and once it was in my hand I somehow found myself back on Instagram within minutes…Shocker.

Boredom used to be a normal human condition. Maybe even a necessary one. Now people experience 15 seconds of unoccupied thought and immediately reach for stimulation like their internal world is something to escape from.

Maybe that’s why so many people’s personalities now just feel like recycled fragments of whatever content they consume all day.

Someone referenced an Instagram post to me the other day as if it was an original thought, not even considering the possibility I had already seen the exact same post and top comment. Feels like everything is starting to blur together now. Personalities. Opinions. Humor. Even originality itself becoming increasingly curated, recycled and algorithmically distributed.

I do this with everything.

Not the writing part specifically. The obsession part.

I find something that grabs me, usually at the worst possible time, and suddenly it becomes the center of my internal world for anywhere from 3 days to 6 months. I research it obsessively. Convince myself it’s meaningful. Buy books I probably won’t finish. Buy materials or reference items that never get used or even opened sometimes. Open 30 tabs. Build systems around it. Tell myself this one is different.

Then eventually, almost on cue, I disappear from it completely.

I’ve done this with business ideas, books, philosophies, hobbies, career paths, fitness kicks, side projects, identities, probably even personalities. Some part of me is always searching for the next thing that finally quiets my mind for longer than a few hours.

This Substack may very well become another example.

Which honestly feels like the only truthful way to start this.

Because I’m not a writer. At least not in the traditional sense. I never sat around dreaming of publishing essays or building an audience or becoming one of those people who says things like “my readers.” The idea almost embarrasses me a little if I’m being honest.

But if someone that writes or blogs looked through my Notes app over the years, they probably would’ve seen this coming before I did.

Thousands of fragmented thoughts. Half-finished observations. Lines written late on the LIRR after work. Weird philosophical tangents buried between grocery lists and business/growth initiatives. Long paragraphs about Roman emperors sitting next to thoughts about baseball players who disappeared after three good seasons. Screenshots of comments I never posted. Ideas that felt life changing for about 17 minutes.

Most of it meaningless.

Some of it maybe not.

I’m listening to a podcast while writing this. Rick Rubin talking to Chris Best. Chris said something that stuck with me immediately. People spend too much time thinking about publishing the first thing instead of just publishing it.

That hit me harder than it probably should’ve because overthinking has quietly become one of my core personality traits. Truthfully, I been thinking of coming around to post here for 3 months now. 

I think about things instead of doing them.
Then I think about why I do that.
Then I become self-aware about the thinking.
Then I analyze the self-awareness.
Then suddenly months pass and Im on to another topic or idea.

I’ve spent a large part of my life mentally rehearsing existence instead of fully participating in it.

And yet somehow I still function relatively well on paper.

I work in finance. A world built almost entirely on controlled perception, language calibration, hierarchy management, and carefully constructed identities. Everyone performing some optimized version of themselves. The polished executive. The market expert. The salesperson who speaks confidently about products they barely understand until trader commentary hits their inbox fifteen seconds before a client call. Compliance and supervision people convinced regulation alone constitutes market intelligence. Entire departments designed to slow down people actually producing something. The visionary who only traffics in ideas because execution would expose the absence of substance. The corporate assassin disguised as a mentor quietly scanning every meeting for weakness, leverage, opportunity and replaceability.

And I’ve always had this strange resentment toward all of it.

Not because I think I’m above it. I’m not. I understand the game completely. Probably too well and that’s part of the problem.

I just never fully agreed to participate in it the way other people seem willing to.

I’ve always had this refusal to smooth myself out for acceptance. Even when it would benefit me financially. Even when it would make life objectively easier. Even when I knew I was probably placing a ceiling over my own head.

There’s a peace that comes with that.
There’s also isolation…as I sit at my desk in a crew neck, jeans and Aimé Leon Dore collab New Balances in a sea of navy suits, white button ups and ties.

I think a lot of people live split between who they actually are and who they’ve learned performs best publicly. Somewhere along the line I decided I’d rather deal with the consequences of authenticity than become too artificial. Which sounds noble until you realize authenticity can also become its own form of ego.

That’s another recurring theme here probably:
being self-aware enough to identify your contradictions while continuing to repeat them anyway. The paradox of being self aware, maybe ill write about that next.

I think that’s also why I’ve always liked people like Theo Von. The ability to say something deeply vulnerable while pretending not to fully understand what you’re saying. Hiding sincerity inside humor because saying things directly still feels dangerous somehow. Sophisticated ignorance maybe…

Another thing Chris said was that a lot of people found themselves here through comment sections. Which made me finally made me click the plus icon and see the “write an article” tab for the first time because I’ve probably spent more time in comment sections than actually posting anything publicly under my own name.

That’s genuinely where I feel most natural online.

Not as the main character.
Not building a personal brand.
Not posting curated life updates.

Just appearing randomly under some meaningless post in the middle of the day talking about why a looping video of a kid dancing alone in his room feels strangely tragic and existential. Like a jester performing for an empty court, twirling around trying to keep the darkness from catching up to him the second the music stops. Or making Roman Empire references under sports clips. Or writing something overly sincere beneath a post that probably should’ve stayed a joke.

Sometimes I think comment sections are one of the last honest places left online.

Not always intelligent.
Definitely not healthy.
But honest.

People accidentally reveal themselves there. Their loneliness. Their bitterness. Their humor. Their need to be seen or heard. Their desire to matter for five seconds to strangers they’ll never meet. The small notification every once in a while reminding them they aren’t entirely alone in whatever strange thought crossed their mind that random day. But theres some times a comment I read on a random post sticks with me for weeks. I heard a random referenceJoe Pera made over 7 years ago about a an omelet that got cold during an argument that I still think about to this day.

Maybe this is just an extension of that.

I don’t really have a grand goal here. I’m not trying to monetize my personality or become a productivity philosopher or sell people some framework for optimizing their lives or sell anything for that matter. I spend enough time around monetized identity already.

Honestly, this may just be a place for me to stop keeping every thought trapped inside my own head.

Maybe other people relate to it.
Maybe nobody does.
Maybe I abandon this in a month.
Maybe this becomes the one thing I actually stick with.

I don’t know.

But I do know I’m tired of endlessly rehearsing things privately instead of just putting something into the world and living with the outcome.
