DESERT MINYMA NGANGKARI HEALERS (9-24 AUG)

In a timely manner, our friend Nancy Joyce-Hunter in the Soulhub community is coordinating the UK part of the Desert Minyma (women) coming to the UK for the first time ever.

They will be travelling to Glastonbury, The Medicine Festival and South West London. These women offer ancient healings, and are senior traditional law women, Ngangkari (healers), artists and cultural custodians from the Central Desert of Australia. They carry one of the world’s oldest continuous healing and cultural traditions, with knowledge passed from generation to generation through Country, family, ceremony and Tjukurpa (the Dreaming).

Three Ngangkari (healer) women of the Anangu tribe from around Uluru have been invited to attend Medicine Festival 12 - 17th to share their ancient, sacred and traditional healing practises, their art and to sit in conversation in a spirit of respect, deep listening and connection.

After Medicine Festival the women would like to offer one-to-one Ngangkari healing sessions, where several healers work together with one person at a time according to their traditional healing practices. They will also have original paintings and bush medicines available, with proceeds supporting the women, their families and the continuation of community-led cultural programs.

The expedition, called Globebusters headed up by Guinness World Record Holders for global motorcycle travel, Kevin and Julia Sanders, finished this July at the fitting National Motor Museum in Beaulieu.

This isn’t just a tale of cities, countries and dirt roads. It’s a conversation about cultures, change and what we learn about ourselves when we step off the well-beaten track. Simon crosses borders between ‘stans’, that you have to get a map out for, battling treacherous roads of the Gobi Desert to Turkey’s infamous Stone Road.

To get these new experiences and I think the risk is that you see it as a tick list and I’ve been consciously conscious not to do that. It’s been more what have I learnt from this? What have I learnt from other people? And a long time travelling across India and Asia gives you all these perspectives and other places as well.

With ‘Chatty Luggage’, aka his wife Martina, at times on the back of the bike, Simon, shares the stories of solo and partner riding, and the dynamics of being together with a group of guys for 3 months.

It’s not always easy to find the space and time to travel, and he’s lucky that his work, Initials CX, also sees the advantages of an open mind and new experiences. The man who returns is very different to the one that left. What inspires travel through developing and developed countries isn’t always clear. Perhaps for him, it’s partly the fear of feeling trapped that inspires this occasional life on the road. Perhaps it’s an opportunity to reflect on life.

That’s why the timing of this podcast with Tricia Thompson feels divine. Not only did the invite to be on the podcast roll off my tongue as we caught up on the phone, but she was also arriving in London for a wedding of our dear friend Michelle Dite, and so we had space and time to meet in Barnes for coffee, podcast and lunch.

We’ve known Julia for a few years in London, where she’s often joined us for Soulwalks in Richmond Park, for coffee and conversation, and it’s this foundation of sharing intimate experiences which leads us to re-connect across the airwaves.

For every day is “Judgment Day” and never before in human history have we been so acutely aware of the scope and depth of human potential for “good and evil”. We are going through foretold apocalyptic times where everything is being revealed and nothing can be hidden for long. So it is on both a global and individual level we are being squeezed to reveal what we are truly made of. A great purge of toxicity coming to the surface to be faced and healed. A strong invitation to reflect and act upon who we truly are and what we truly love, value and trust when gentle push comes to aggressive shove.

We too are facing of our own strong squeeze or invitation. Early February we were served a letter of unaffordable rent increase or 2 month ‘break-clause’ to leave our home. We decided that it was our own Universal Letter, to choose a path that in all honesty we’d been discussing and toying with for a long while. A path of travel, adventure and the search for our own real home.

We love much of our life. The people in it, the work we do, time with family and friends and everything we’ve created here over the last 20-50 years. It’s not a case of ‘this is wrong’ - move, but more a, something isn’t quite flowing and we are being called elsewhere. We have an abundance of skills, experience, love and connections, however for some reason finances have been incredibly challenging since the pandemic and we have not quite find our true alignment and flow.

Therefore, with our quest for adventure, for beauty, for diversity, we are heading off on our own adventure. In a way it is not the start of our adventure but just the next chapter of us practicing finding our joyful moment to moment momentum.

Our rough dream is to take ‘Soulhub on Tour’ and create ‘Restoration Hubs’ around the world for those who feel overwhelmed by the world, to come and find rest and restoration with us. As yet we are unsure of where the wind will take us…but we hope that you will follow our journey and perhaps be inspired to invite a little adventure into your own lives.

We’ll be out of our flat from 19 May, and hope to remain near Richmond with friend/housesitting until mid-late summer. Whilst we honour our commitments here including Dance Al Fresco. In the meantime we’ll be selling off our belongings, so if you can help share those, buy them then please do give them new homes.

Today’s guest is William McCoy, an American tech entrepreneur who has spent over 17 years leading business ventures in real estate, fintech, app development and clean energy. He also supports Fortune 500 clients in enterprise software and hardware services, through scaling global Electric Vehicles and solar energy operations.

William’s most recent business called Kurudy which means Return in Swahili. It is a reward based crowd funding platform using the power of regtech, fintech, and AI. One that aims to raise capital, align incentives, protect backers, and empower creators specifically in Africa.

We were randomly connected to William by a rather clever little bit of tech...that normally we would ignore but for some reason on this occasion we didn’t. And as result Carmen and I landed up having a really interesting conversation with William that would have made a great podcast. So we came back to hopefully create and capture another exciting and enlightening conversation about empowerment, community and how tech and humans can harmoniously co-exist.

As you know Carmen and I are by no means global economic specialists however we did our best to discuss how people all around the world are trying to survive and how different cultures face different challenges. We also touch on many other universal topics such as therapy, parenthood, strength through diversity.

We apologise the sound quality is not great on this episode, but there are some great nuggets of insight within the story.

William stressed how black Americans have to go way above and beyond their white counterparts efforts in order to succeed. And how this need to be overly strong is sometimes a block to discussing mental health issues and can often mean they walk away from big projects.

We discussed the importance of both countries, and individuals, becoming self reliant rather than being beholden to global powers and employers. As global powers benefit from keeping developing countries poor so that they can be exploited for cheap labour and minerals.

“When you work in the big system, everything does come down to a dollar and a cent.

And, you know,

I guess treating people differently because everything’s equated down to dollars and cents ended up just not agreeing with me.”

That’s what happened to Andre Chow, when he hit a wall following a successful career in Medical Technology, and decided to leave it all. At the time he didn’t know what would follow, but as it happens, something different was waiting for him.

He and his partner Regine settled in the Peak District, right beside Derwent Reservoir, where his healing truly began and he reconnected with nature. It was there that life presented their next adventure. One day, on a walk after Thanksgiving, they were warmly greeted by their neighbours, Abe and Pippa.

“Stumbling into their home the next day and just being enveloped by the most incredible warmth and welcome and feeling of generosity and abundance and love and then just being like, wow,

I cannot remember the last time I felt like this or been welcomed like this.”

It was this essence which carried them through to the creation of Open House, a community gathering space in Hathersage.

Andre shares his experiences, beliefs with Carmen Rendell, and his very personal journey of creating this beautiful new home-from-home, which we believe is needed more and more in our towns and villages. Spaces for us to come together, to feel that warm welcome whoever you are, to support local community whole-being.

Jack Baumann is the founder and director of Guidester.com.

‘Lloyd was bitten by Africa and grew up with her dust on his feet and her breath in his lungs.’

Lloyd was born and raised in the wild and dynamic KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Like many South Africans, he has since chosen to base himself in the quieter, more peaceful suburbs of Twickenham. Despite this, Lloyd still spends much of his time in Africa, either embarking on his own adventures or guiding others through the African wilderness.
