light, tunnels, angels, and other dimensions all afternoon. But when somebody we love dies, the question becomes personal. Is that person still somewhere? Would they know us? Does the love we shared have anywhere to go?

I’ve worked in a funeral home. Death was part of my working life, but that doesn’t mean I have its mysteries figured out. Being close to grief gave me a reason to take these questions seriously. It doesn’t give me permission to pretend I have all the answers.

Two people whose work offers a great deal to consider are Dr. Michael Newton and Dolores Cannon. Both explored accounts given under hypnosis, and both presented a picture of existence extending beyond a single human lifetime.

What interests me is the possibility running through their work: perhaps death brings us into a larger understanding of who we are.

The life between lives

Michael Newton’s Journey of Souls presents 29 case studies drawn from hypnotic sessions. His subjects described what they understood as experiences between incarnations: leaving a body, encountering guides, belonging to groups of souls, and preparing for another earthly life. Newton interpreted these accounts as recollections of an actual spiritual existence. Source: Michael Newton Institute.

Consider what that picture suggests.

You arrive here with a name, a family, a body, and circumstances you spend years learning to live with. Eventually, that becomes your whole definition of yourself.

I’m the person who does this job. I’m the one who made that mistake. I’m the one somebody left.

But suppose those descriptions are incomplete.

Within Newton’s framework, a human life belongs to a much longer story. Our present identity matters, but it doesn’t contain everything we are. Even his chapter title “Homecoming” invites a different feeling about death from the dread many of us grew up with.

I find that possibility moving. A homecoming suggests recognition. It suggests that the unfamiliar place might turn out to be familiar after all.

That is an interpretation worth exploring, even while we leave room for uncertainty about whether the accounts describe an actual destination.

What Dolores Cannon adds

Dolores Cannon approached similar questions in Between Death and Life. According to her publisher, the book draws on 16 years of hypnotic work and explores accounts of death, spiritual existence, and rebirth. Its subjects include guides, relationships understood as karmic, and the idea of planning aspects of a lifetime before birth. Source: Ozark Mountain Publishing.

Newton’s and Cannon’s accounts overlap in their interest in continuing existence and reincarnation. That doesn’t make their systems identical, or turn their agreement into proof. Both relied on hypnosis, so the limits of that method apply to both.

Still, Cannon’s work opens a question that reaches beyond curiosity about dying.

If our lives have a larger context, how might we understand the people we encounter?

Some relationships change us in ways we struggle to explain. Somebody enters our life, and the conversation feels as though it began long before we met. Another person challenges us so deeply that we have to reconsider who we are.

A spiritual reading may see a connection extending across lifetimes. Other explanations include shared experience, temperament, and the ordinary human capacity for attachment. We don’t have to erase those explanations to explore a spiritual one.

And we certainly don’t have to call every intense relationship a soul contract. Intensity alone doesn’t tell us whether a relationship is good for us.

Meaning should never become blame

There is one part of this conversation where I want to be especially clear.

The idea that souls participate in choosing a lifetime can become cruel when people apply it carelessly.

Someone tells you about abuse, illness, or the death of a child, and you answer by telling them they chose it before they were born.

We do not know that about them.

Whatever we believe about reincarnation, another person’s suffering is not ours to explain away. Finding meaning in your own experience is very different from assigning a spiritual reason to somebody else’s pain.

If there are lessons here, compassion ought to be one of them.

Help the person who needs help. Believe that their pain matters. Give them room to grieve without turning their loss into a lecture about spiritual growth.

No theory of the afterlife should make us less caring in this life.

How much can these accounts tell us?

I want to keep wonder in this conversation. I also want to keep honesty.

Hypnosis does not establish that a reported memory is historically accurate. Research has found that it can increase confidence in memories without increasing their reliability. A vivid, sincere experience can feel convincing and still be mistaken. Source: Ohio State University.

Newton and Cannon interpreted their subjects’ accounts spiritually. Those interpretations are not scientific proof of life after death. These are also hypnosis accounts, which should not be confused with reports collected from people who survived a medical crisis.

That distinction doesn’t make the books meaningless. It tells us how to read them.

We can consider what they suggest, examine how those ideas affect us, and admit where the evidence runs out. Nobody has to choose between swallowing every claim and refusing to consider anything beyond what is already established.

For me, “I don’t know” leaves room for an honest spiritual life.

What we do with the possibility

Suppose, for a moment, that consciousness continues.

What would you do differently tomorrow?

I wouldn’t want that belief to make me impatient to leave this life. I’d want it to make me more attentive to the life I have.

There are people to listen to. Apologies that would still mean something. Ordinary afternoons with the grandchildren that deserve more attention than whatever is happening on the phone.

And if you are grieving, you don’t have to solve the afterlife to love the person you miss. You don’t have to receive a sign, remember a past life, or reach some special spiritual state to prove that your bond mattered.

It mattered because you lived it.

The possibility of reunion can be held gently. It doesn’t need to become a promise we cannot verify or a test somebody has to pass.

That is what I want to carry from this exploration of Newton and Cannon: room to hope, enough honesty to keep asking questions, and a reason to treat the people beside us with care.

Perhaps death will bring a recognition we cannot yet imagine.

Until then, there is someone here who needs to be loved.

Before You Were Born: Did Your Soul Choose This Life?

Soul agreements, difficult relationships, and the love. Sometimes it is a friendship that settles into place as if it had already begun somewhere else. And sometimes, if we are being honest, it is a person who turns our whole life upside down.

They may stay for forty years. They may stay for six months. But after meeting them, we are never quite the same.

That raises one of the oldest and most unsettling spiritual questions: Did we know some of these people before we were born?

And if we did, is it possible that we knew something about the life we were entering too?

Christians believed in reincarnation for the first five hundred years. Then, in the year 553, the church held a council, condemned the teaching, and removed every trace of it from Christianity.

Now, that is one mighty interesting story.

It is also a little too neat.

History rarely behaves itself well enough to fit inside one clean paragraph. The truth is more complicated—but I believe it is also more interesting.

Some early Christians did entertain ideas that resembled reincarnation or the transmigration of souls. Other Christians strongly rejected those ideas. Still others believed the soul existed before birth without necessarily believing it returned through repeated earthly lives.

Those are three different things, and folks have a habit of tossing them all into the same theological sack.

So let’s slow down and examine this a little deeper.

What do we mean by reincarnation?

Before asking whether early Christians believed in reincarnation, we need to decide what that word means.

Reincarnation usually describes an individual soul living more than one earthly life by entering a succession of human—or sometimes animal—bodies.

Ancient Greek writers often discussed a related idea called metempsychosis or the transmigration of souls. The basic idea was that the soul survived bodily death and could pass into another embodied life.

But reincarnation is not the same thing as either resurrection or the pre-existence of the soul.

Resurrection usually describes the restoration or transformation of a person after death. The same life continues into a renewed form; the soul does not simply begin another ordinary childhood as somebody else.

Pre-existence means that a soul existed before its present bodily life. That belief does not automatically require the soul to have lived as another human being before.

A soul could theoretically exist before birth only once.

So when an early Christian writer speaks about souls existing before bodies, we cannot automatically declare:

“There it is. They believed in reincarnation.”

Maybe they did.

Maybe they didn’t.

We have to keep reading.

Early Christianity was not one tidy organisation

Most people were taught to imagine early Christianity as one united church with one Bible, one set of doctrines, and everybody sitting in agreement until troublemakers came along.

That picture does not hold up very well.

The first centuries of Christianity included many communities, teachers, scriptures, interpretations, and arguments about the nature of Yeshua, the material world, salvation, resurrection, and the human soul. Alexandria alone became home to several competing Christian movements and theological schools.

Some groups later labelled heretical appear to have accepted some form of repeated embodiment.

Irenaeus, writing against groups he opposed during the second century, reported that followers of Carpocrates believed souls moved from one body to another and experienced different kinds of earthly lives.

That is clearly much closer to what we now call reincarnation.

But there are two things we must remember.

First, the Carpocratians did not represent every Christian.

Second, much of what we know about them comes from opponents who were trying to discredit them. Irenaeus was not writing as a neutral historian. He was writing a theological prosecution.

His report still tells us that transmigration was being discussed—but it does not prove that the majority of early Christians accepted it.

Matter of fact, Irenaeus spent considerable effort arguing against the transmigration of souls. His opposition shows that the idea existed in the religious world around him, but also that other Christians rejected it.

So the honest statement is not:

“The early Christians believed in reincarnation.”

It is:

“Some early Christians appear to have believed in forms of reincarnation, while others strongly opposed them.”

That may not fit on a bumper sticker, but it is a whole lot closer to the truth.

What about Origen?

This is where the conversation usually gets tangled.

Origen of Alexandria lived during the late second and early third centuries. He became one of Christianity’s most influential early biblical scholars and philosophical theologians. He speculated about the origin and pre-existence of souls and explored the possibility that rational beings existed before their present embodied condition.

Because Origen believed in the pre-existence of souls, many modern writers call him a teacher of reincarnation.

But that conclusion is heavily disputed.

In his Commentary on Matthew, Origen directly called the doctrine of transmigration foreign to the church and argued against the same soul repeatedly entering earthly bodies.

That sounds fairly plain.

Origen believed the soul’s story may have begun before the present body. But repeated earthly incarnations are another matter.

Scholars still debate parts of Origen’s thought because some of his writings survive only through later translations, fragments, or hostile descriptions. Even so, the safest conclusion is that Origen’s pre-existence of souls should not simply be treated as ordinary reincarnation.

This distinction matters.

Imagine a man saying:

“I lived in another country before moving here.”

That is not the same as him saying:

“I have repeatedly died and been born into new families for thousands of years.”

Both statements describe existence before his present location.

They do not describe the same journey.

What happened in the year 553?

Now we come to the famous church council.

The Second Council of Constantinople took place in 553 during the reign of Emperor Justinian. Origen and teachings associated with later Origenism were involved in the larger controversy surrounding that period.

A collection of fifteen condemnations associated with this controversy rejected teachings involving the pre-existence of souls and their eventual restoration to an original spiritual condition.

But modern scholarship generally does not treat those fifteen statements as formal canons issued during the official sessions of the council itself. The scholarly consensus described by patristics specialist Peter Martens is that Justinian issued them and bishops approved them shortly before the council formally convened.

That may sound like splitting hairs, but it matters when somebody claims:

“The council gathered in 553 for the purpose of removing reincarnation from Christianity.”

That is not an accurate description of what happened.

The primary business of the council concerned a Christological dispute known as the Three Chapters controversy. Origen’s name appears in a condemnation associated with the council, but the relationship between the official proceedings and the separate anti-Origenist statements has long been debated.

Even more importantly, those condemnations speak directly about pre-existent souls and particular forms of restoration. They do not provide evidence that reincarnation had been the universal belief of Christianity until that moment.

The year 553 did not mark one sudden afternoon when everybody believed in reincarnation before lunch and nobody believed in it by supper.

The institutional church had been arguing against transmigration for centuries before that council. Irenaeus opposed it in the second century, and Origen himself later rejected repeated migration of the same soul through earthly bodies.

What happened over time was more gradual.

Certain ideas became accepted as orthodox.

Others were pushed outside the boundaries.

Institutions gained power to decide which teachers would be preserved, which writings would be copied, and which beliefs would be condemned.

That is significant.

But it is not the same as proving that reincarnation was Christianity’s original universal teaching.

Was reincarnation removed from the Bible?

There is also a popular claim that church leaders removed biblical passages teaching reincarnation.

I have not found reliable historical evidence that the Council of Constantinople—or another early council—went through the biblical manuscripts and deleted clear reincarnation teachings.

That does not mean the biblical canon developed without politics, authority, controversy, or human agendas.

It certainly did not.

But we should not replace one oversimplified church story with another oversimplified alternative story.

There are passages that cause people to wonder whether ideas about pre-existence or returning souls were part of the conversation.

Yeshua says that John the Baptist is, in some sense, the Elijah who was expected to come.

Some readers take this as evidence that Elijah reincarnated as John.

Others understand it symbolically: John carried Elijah’s prophetic role, spirit, or mission rather than Elijah’s individual soul occupying John’s body. Origen himself used this passage to reject transmigration and argued that John continued Elijah’s prophetic ministry without literally being Elijah reincarnated.

In John’s Gospel, the disciples meet a man who had been blind from birth and ask whether the man himself had sinned or whether his parents had sinned.

That is an unusual question.

How could the man have sinned in a way that caused a condition present at birth?

Some see the question as evidence that the disciples knew about pre-existence or reincarnation. Others connect it with ancient ideas about prenatal sin, inherited consequences, or simply the disciples proposing a confused explanation that Yeshua then rejects.

The passage raises a question.

It does not provide a complete doctrine.

On the other side, Hebrews says people die once and then face judgment. That passage has long been used to argue against repeated earthly lives.

The texts leave us with material to examine—but not with a clear statement from Yeshua saying:

“Every soul repeatedly returns to Earth in another body.”

Nor do they give us a clear statement from him declaring:

“The idea of reincarnation is forbidden, and you must never consider it.”

As with many spiritual subjects, later institutions often became much more confident than the texts themselves.

Why would reincarnation threaten an institution?

We should be careful not to invent conspiracies where evidence is lacking.

Still, we can ask why a belief in repeated lives might sit uncomfortably beside an institution built around one earthly lifetime, one authorised path of salvation, and one final judgment.

If a soul receives many opportunities to grow, learn, and awaken, then fear loses some of its urgency.

The institution can no longer say quite as easily:

“You have this one brief chance, and your eternal fate depends upon accepting our answer before time runs out.”

That does not prove reincarnation is true.

It does help explain why the idea could become threatening within a system whose authority depends partly upon controlling the terms of salvation.

At the same time, reincarnation can create problems of its own.

It can be misused to blame suffering people by claiming they must deserve their pain because of something they did in a previous life.

It can cause people to neglect injustice by saying every victim simply chose their circumstances before birth.

And it can become just as rigid and manipulative as the doctrine it replaces.

No spiritual teaching should be accepted merely because it frightens an institution.

It should also not be accepted merely because it irritates one.

What can we honestly say?

Here is where I land.

Some early Christian movements believed in ideas resembling reincarnation or transmigration.

Many other early Christians rejected those ideas.

Origen believed in the pre-existence of souls, but that should not automatically be confused with repeated earthly reincarnation—and his surviving commentary explicitly opposes transmigration.

The church’s boundaries narrowed over time, and beliefs about the soul that did not fit the developing orthodox system were condemned or marginalised.

But there is no solid basis for saying all Christians believed in reincarnation for five hundred years until one council suddenly removed it.

The truth is neither:

“Reincarnation was always the central teaching of Christianity.”

Nor:

“No Christian ever considered reincarnation until modern times.”

The truth lives in the uncomfortable space between those two claims.

And that space is usually where history gets interesting.

You are allowed to leave the question open

You do not have to decide today whether reincarnation is true.

You can examine accounts of past-life memories.

You can study the ancient texts.

You can compare resurrection, pre-existence, transmigration, and spiritual rebirth.

You can listen to people whose experiences do not fit neatly inside your current worldview.

And you can still say:

“I do not know.”

That is not spiritual failure.

Sometimes “I don’t know yet” is the most honest doorway into deeper understanding.

The purpose of examining early Christian history is not to replace one unquestionable doctrine with another.

It is to recover the questions we were told had already been settled.

Perhaps consciousness experiences one earthly life.

Perhaps it experiences many.

Perhaps the truth is stranger than either system has imagined.

But whatever the answer may be, fear should not make the decision for us—and neither should our desire for a particular answer to be true.

Real integrity means being willing to follow the evidence, even when it leads somewhere we did not expect.

From the Comments

Were you taught that reincarnation was completely incompatible with Christianity?

And if your beliefs have changed, what caused you to reconsider the possibility?

Share your experience in the comments. what you were taught they meant.

There is something I hear from people all the time.

They have begun questioning the religion they were raised in. They no longer accept every doctrine they were handed. Some have stopped believing in eternal torment altogether.

And yet, every now and then, the fear comes roaring back.

A sermon clip appears on their phone. Somebody asks whether they are certain about what happens after death. A familiar Bible verse gets quoted with just the right amount of menace.

And suddenly, there it is:

What if I’m wrong?

What if I really am going to hell?

I know how that feels. Truly.

But the return of fear does not necessarily mean that God is warning you. Sometimes fear simply remembers a lesson that the thinking mind has already begun to question.

Fear can outlive the belief that created it

Many of us were introduced to hell before we were old enough to examine what the word meant.

We were not presented with the history of the doctrine, the original languages, or the different ways Christians have interpreted judgment and the afterlife.

We were given a picture.

There was fire. There was torment. There were people screaming forever. And somewhere above it all was a God who would permit—perhaps even require—this punishment because a person had believed the wrong thing.

When that picture is planted deeply enough, it can become more than a theological idea. It can become part of how the nervous system responds to uncertainty.

That is why somebody can say, “I don’t believe that anymore,” and still feel their stomach tighten when the subject comes up.

The mind may have moved on.

Fear sometimes takes a little longer.

One English word is carrying a mighty heavy load

Here is something many of us were never taught:

The biblical writers did not use one single Hebrew or Greek word that corresponds perfectly to the modern English picture of hell.

Several different terms have been translated or understood beneath that one English word. Those terms arose in different historical settings and did not all describe precisely the same thing. Academic surveys of the subject note that the familiar, fully developed picture of hell is difficult to locate as one unified description within the biblical texts themselves.

That does not automatically settle the argument about the afterlife.

But it ought to make us slow down.

Sheol

In the Hebrew scriptures, Sheol generally refers to the realm of the dead, death itself, or the grave.

It was not consistently presented as a place where only wicked people were tortured. In many passages, it is simply where the dead go. The Oxford overview notes that early ideas such as Sheol, the Pit, and Abaddon were not originally places where the dead received rewards and punishments in the later Christian sense.

That is already different from the fiery chamber many children were taught to imagine.

Hades

The Greek word Hades is often used as the New Testament counterpart to Sheol—the domain or condition of the dead.

This is especially clear when the New Testament quotes an older Hebrew passage. The Hebrew may say Sheol, while the Greek rendering uses Hades. Reference works commonly distinguish Hades from Gehenna rather than treating the two as interchangeable names for exactly the same place.

Even the book of Revelation portrays Death and Hades being cast into the lake of fire. Whatever interpretation a person adopts, the passage itself treats Hades and the final fiery judgment as distinguishable images.

Gehenna

When Yeshua gives some of his strongest warnings, the word appearing in the Greek text is often Gehenna.

Gehenna comes from the Valley of Hinnom, a real place outside ancient Jerusalem associated in Israel’s history with idolatry, violence, child sacrifice, and prophetic warnings of judgment. By the time of Yeshua, that valley had developed powerful symbolic associations with divine judgment and destruction.

Scholars and religious traditions disagree about exactly how Yeshua intended those warnings to be understood.

Some take Gehenna as a reference to everlasting conscious punishment.

Others understand it as destruction, purification, national judgment, or prophetic imagery rooted in Israel’s scriptures.

The honest answer is that the argument cannot be settled merely by pointing to the English word hell, because the English word has already interpreted the ancient term for us.

Is “hell” a mistranslation?

I would be careful here.

It is tempting to announce that hell was invented through one gigantic mistranslation. That makes a powerful video hook, but history is rarely that tidy.

The problem is not necessarily that every translator acted dishonestly.

The deeper problem is compression.

Different ideas—Sheol, Hades, Gehenna, the lake of fire, judgment, death, destruction, and punishment—have often been gathered beneath one English word. Once that happens, readers can unconsciously carry the meaning of one passage into every other passage.

The word hell arrives with centuries of artwork, sermons, literature, folklore, and theological development attached to it.

So when a modern reader sees “hell,” they may picture something far more specific than the original writer placed on the page.

That does not prove there is no judgment.

It does not prove that actions have no consequences.

And it does not prove that every frightening passage has been misunderstood.

It proves something simpler:

We should examine the text before allowing an inherited English word to do all our thinking for us.

What kind of God were you taught to fear?

For many people, the real struggle is not merely the definition of a Hebrew or Greek word.

It is the picture of God that came with it.

Were you taught that God knows every human weakness, every wound, every confusion, and every circumstance—but will still condemn someone forever for reaching the wrong conclusion?

Were you taught that divine love lasts only until the moment the heart stops beating?

Were you told that a person could live with kindness, humility, and compassion, yet face endless torment because they could not force themselves to believe a particular doctrine?

Those questions deserve more than, “Don’t think about it. Just have faith.”

Real truth does not become weaker when we examine it.

And a healthy faith should not require panic to keep it alive.

When the fear comes back

When an old fear of hell rises, you do not have to fight it, obey it, or treat it as a message from heaven.

You can pause and ask:

What exactly am I afraid of?

Am I afraid of something I have carefully examined—or a picture placed in my mind when I was young?

Which biblical word is actually being used?

Is the passage speaking of Sheol, Hades, Gehenna, death, destruction, judgment, or the lake of fire?

What is the setting?

Is this poetry, prophecy, a parable, an apocalyptic vision, or a warning addressed to a particular audience?

Whose interpretation am I hearing?

Is this the only way Christians have understood the passage—or merely the only interpretation I was permitted to hear?

And finally:

Would a God who gave me a mind truly be offended because I used it honestly?

You do not have to replace one absolute answer with another overnight.

You are allowed to say:

“I do not know exactly what happens after death—but I am no longer willing to let fear answer the question for me.”

Fear is not the same thing as truth

Sometimes people are told that the terror they feel proves the doctrine must be true.

But fear proves that something frightened you.

That is all.

A person raised in another religion may experience the same terror when questioning the teachings they were given. The intensity of an emotion does not establish the accuracy of the belief attached to it.

Truth may challenge us. It may expose us. It may require us to face the consequences of the way we have lived.

But truth does not need manipulation.

It does not need to shut down questions.

And it does not need a frightened child living inside an adult body to protect it.

Perhaps the real journey is not from belief to unbelief.

Perhaps it is from inherited fear to honest examination.

And that journey may take time.

Be patient with yourself.

The fact that the fear returns does not mean you have failed. It may simply mean another buried part of you is finally ready to be heard, examined, and released.

From the Comments

What were you taught hell was?

And when your beliefs began to change, which part of that fear was the hardest to let go?

Share your experience in the comments. Your question may become the subject of a future From the Comments article or podcast.

Remember, the Kingdom is a lot closer than you think.

Why Wake Up If We Still Die? 17:34-36). Two women grinding at the mill, one taken, one left. Ordinary daily labor, side by side, and suddenly a great dividing line appears.

In the surface reading, it points to the suddenness of the coming of the Son of Man, like the days of Noah or Lot, when judgment and deliverance arrive without warning. One is spared, the other is not.

But Gnosis asks us to look deeper. What if the “taking” isn’t primarily about physical bodies being whisked away or destroyed in catastrophe? What if it’s about the state of the inner person?

In the Gospel of Thomas (saying 22), Jesus speaks of making the two into one, the inner like the outer, and the male and female into a single one. This points to wholeness, the integration and transcendence of opposites through awakening. The one “taken” may be the soul that has remembered its divine origin and become undivided. The one “left” remains caught in duality, still identified with the grinding wheel of material existence.

Internal awakening doesn’t cancel physical death. It changes what death means. The body returns to the dust, as it must. But the awakened spark, the true self, is not bound by that return.

Escape Plans and Repeating Patterns

You’re right about Noah and Lot. They received warnings and ways of deliverance ahead of catastrophe. In the biblical telling, the ark and the escape from Sodom are acts of divine mercy amid judgment.

The Gnostic texts take this further and sometimes turn it inside out. In writings like the Apocryphon of John and the Revelation of Adam, Noah is a figure of the spiritual race. He is warned not by the creator god alone but by higher powers (often called Pronoia or Epinoia, the forethought of the divine). The “flood” becomes both literal and symbolic, a wave of darkness meant to drown the light.

The true escape isn’t always a wooden boat. Sometimes it is a luminous cloud, a place of shelter in knowledge. The pattern repeats because this world runs in cycles of forgetfulness and remembering. The archons (ruling powers) try again and again to keep the divine spark trapped. But gnosis is the recurring escape plan whispered across the ages.

Awakening now prepares you for whatever “taking” or transition comes, whether in this life or at the threshold of death. It is the inner ark you build before the waters rise.

So What Is the Point?

The point of internal awakening is this:

Death is inevitable for the garment of flesh. But it is not the end of you.

The awakened one meets death like the women at the mill: one is already aligned with the higher reality and is “taken” into the fullness (the Pleroma), drawn upward like light to light. The other remains identified with the millstone, still turning in the lower realms until another turn of the wheel offers another chance to remember.

Jesus didn’t come just to promise a future rescue. He came to show us that the kingdom is within, that the resurrection can be tasted here, and that the spark was never meant to stay lost in the material world forever.

Noah built the ark because he listened. Lot walked away from the city because he heeded the messengers. The same invitation stands now: awaken, remember, integrate the inner and outer.

Then, when the moment of separation comes (whether in quiet death or some larger shaking of the world), you will not be caught grinding in ignorance. You will be the one who is taken home.

Things do repeat. But each cycle offers the same quiet door: gnosis, the knowledge that sets the prisoner free even while the body still walks this earth.

What do you think, friend? Does that land differently? Drop your thoughts below. We’re all grinding at the mill together until we remember we were never just the millers.

What Happens When We Die and Where Do We and where do we go?

The churches will hand you a judgment seat, a set of pearly gates, or a lake of fire. Modern materialists will shrug and say the lights just go out.

The ancient Gnostics (those stubborn, beautiful heretics who hid their books in the Egyptian desert so the empire couldn’t burn them all) gave a different answer. One that still feels dangerously alive.

They said the body is a temporary garment. Useful, temporary, and not the real you.

When the garment finally falls away, what remains is the spark. The piece of the divine that never belonged to this world in the first place.

The First Movement: Release

In the Treatise on the Resurrection (one of the Nag Hammadi texts written as a letter to a student named Rheginos), the teacher is blunt:

The visible members that are dead will not be saved. Only the living members that exist inside them will rise.

Death is not the end of you. It is the moment the costume comes off.

The Savior, they said, already swallowed death. He put aside the world that is perishing and raised himself as an imperishable Aeon. And because we are joined to him, we are drawn upward the same way beams of light are drawn by the sun. Nothing holds us down unless we let it.

The Second Movement: The Ascent

This is where it gets interesting, and a little dangerous.

Between this world and the true Fullness (the Pleroma) there are layers. The Gnostics pictured them as spheres ruled by powers they called archons. Planetary influences. Thought-forms. Old habits of fear, craving, arrogance, and forgetfulness that cling to the soul the way smoke clings to cloth.

As the spirit rises, it has to pass through these spheres. At each level something is surrendered:

the energy of increase and decrease

the illusion of longing

the arrogance of rulers

the deceit that lies in wait

Those who carry real knowledge (gnosis) know the passwords. They remember who they are and where they came from. The archons cannot hold what does not belong to them.

Those who never woke up in this life may find themselves pulled back into another round of forgetfulness. Not as punishment, exactly. More like gravity. What is still heavy falls. What has become light rises.

The Third Movement: Homecoming

Beyond the last sphere is the Ogdoad, the eighth heaven, the place of spirit.

And beyond that is the Pleroma itself: the Fullness, the realm of the Invisible Father and the Aeons, the place where the spark first took shape before it fell into this strange, beautiful, broken world.

There is no judgment seat waiting there. There is recognition.

The soul that has remembered does not plead for mercy. It is received the way a long-lost child is received when she finally walks back through the door.

Some texts speak of a bridal chamber, a sacred union, a final merging with the beloved from whom the soul was never truly separated. Others simply say the deficiency is filled and the All is restored.

Either way, the journey ends where it began: in light that does not cast a shadow.

What This Means for Us Right Now

Here’s the part that still startles me.

The Gnostics did not think resurrection was something that only happens after the heart stops.

They said if you have already woken up, if you have already tasted the knowledge of who you really are, then in a very real sense you have already risen.

You are living the resurrection in this body, right now.

Death, when it comes, is simply the final confirmation of what you already know.

So LadyAnne, and anyone else who asked this in the quiet of their own heart:

We do not go somewhere foreign when we die.

We go home.

And the road home is already open for anyone who remembers the way.

The spark never belonged to the darkness.

It was only visiting.

And one day, when the visit is over, it simply returns.

The Hidden Teachings of Yeshua: The Kingdom Within

Inside the new Soul Signal book on the Gospel of Thomas, spiritual awakening, and the truths that have been hiding in plain sight.

Big Dan Tracy

In this episode, We share the story behind my new book, The Hidden Teachings of Yeshua: 12 Sayings from the Gospel of Thomas That Change Everything.

We explore why these ancient teachings still speak so powerfully to modern seekers, especially those questioning inherited religion, healing from fear, or beginning to recognize that the Kingdom Yeshua spoke of may not be somewhere far away.

It may already be within us.

This conversation touches on several of the book’s central themes: seeking until we find, making the divided self whole, bringing forth what has been buried, recognizing the light within, and learning to see sacred truth in ordinary life.

The book was written in simple, compassionate language, without complicated theology and without replacing one rigid belief system with another.

The purpose is not to push anyone down a path.

It is to hold the lantern steady.

The Hidden Teachings of Yeshua is now available as a digital book through the Soul Signal Library.

Visit SoulSignal.space to learn more.

The Secret of the Divine Spark

A Journey into the Forbidden World of Gnosticism

Big Dan Tracy

What if the world as we know it is a prison, and you are a divine being who has simply forgotten? This is the central, startling premise of Gnosticism, the ancient religious movement that challenged the very foundations of early Christianity. Far from a single faith, Gnosticism is a collection of mystical traditions that promised salvation not through faith or good works, but through Gnosis—a direct, personal knowledge of the divine.

In this podcast, we unlock the secrets of Gnostic cosmology, descending from the hidden realm of the Monad and the Pleroma into the material world, which was created not by a loving God, but by a blind, arrogant being called the Demiurge. We’ll explore the fascinating and bizarre characters of this cosmic drama, from the lion-faced Archons that guard our earthly prison, to the divine Savior who descends to awaken the spark of light trapped within us.

Join us as we navigate the tripartite nature of humanity, uncover the myths of major sects like the Sethians and Valentinians, and ask the ultimate question: How can you escape the material illusion and reclaim your true, divine identity? For anyone fascinated by forgotten histories, mystical philosophy, and the eternal human quest for enlightenment, this is your guide to the Gnostic universe.

The 7 Thunderous Voices

What were they? For they are everywhere: they are above, they are below; they are in the concealed, they are in the revealed. The Holy Spirit is in the revealed: it is below. It is in the concealed: it is above.”

A double name. Not just another title in the heavenly lineup. Something that moves between worlds. Something that refuses to stay put in one box.

Most of us grew up hearin’ the Holy Spirit as the third Person of the Trinity — the dove, the wind, the one who “proceeds” from Father and Son. Clean. Neat. Safe. But when ye go back to these older texts, the picture gets a lot more alive… and a lot more feminine.

In the Apocryphon of John, the great invisible Spirit .. the ultimate Father beyond all names doesn’t stay alone. His first emanation is Barbelo, the perfect power, the image of the virginal Spirit Herself. She’s called the Mother-Father, the first Human, the holy Spirit, the thrice-male and thrice-female, the womb of everything. She’s not a lesser helper. She’s the divine feminine face of the Source, Forethought, the one who holds the whole Pleroma in her light.

And Sophia, the Wisdom who falls and wanders, gets called the holy Spirit too “the mother of the living.” When she repents, it’s the holy Spirit that pours out from the entire Pleroma to comfort and restore her. In the Valentinian view, after that fall creates deficiency in the divine realm, it’s Christ and the Holy Spirit projected together as a sacred pair, who come to console the aeons, bring form back to what was shapeless, and make the Pleroma fruitful again. The Spirit here isn’t passive. She’s the one who calms, who quickens, who finishes what Christ begins.

Philip goes even further with the practical side. The chrism the spiritual anointing… is superior to baptism. “It is from the word ‘Chrism’ that we have been called ‘Christians’… He possesses the resurrection, the light, the cross, the Holy Spirit.” We’re not just washed. We’re anointed with that living power. “Through the Holy Spirit we are indeed begotten again… We are anointed through the Spirit.” And that gorgeous line: “When the Holy Spirit breathes, the summer comes.” Life itself wakes up when She moves.

Even the virgin birth gets re-read. “Some said, ‘Mary conceived by the Holy Spirit.’ They are in error… When did a woman ever conceive by a woman?” The text points instead to a mystical union: the Father of everything uniting with the virgin who came down… the Holy Spirit Herself descending. Not a biological event to argue over, but a symbol of how the hidden divine and the manifest world come together to birth the Christ in us.

And that “double name” keeps echoin’. The rulers (and sometimes our own distracted minds) think they’re runnin’ the show by their own power. But “the Holy Spirit in secret was accomplishing everything through them as it wished.” She’s the hidden current. The one who works below while bein’ above. The one who refuses to be boxed into “only this” or “only that.”

I don’t know about you, but when I sit with this, the old Sunday-school version starts feelin’… thin. Like they took the wild, movin’, feminine power of the divine and tried to make Her behave. The Gnostics didn’t clip Her wings. They saw Her as the bridge… the anointer, the consoler, the secret accomplisher, the breath that brings summer to the soul.

The divine spark in each of us doesn’t wake up on doctrine alone. It wakes up when the Holy Spirit… that double-named Mother, moves through the hidden places and anoints what was asleep.

That’s the fire these old texts are carryin’. And it’s still burnin’ if we’ve got the eyes to see it.

What does this stir in you when ye sit with it? Does the idea of the Spirit as divine Mother, secret worker, and inner anointer land different than the version ye were handed? Drop yer thoughts in the comments below.

This circle is for the real talk. Let’s keep the conversation alive.
