On the surface, these seem like sensible questions.

After all, why would anyone want to invest when prices are falling?

But here’s the irony.

The market never announces when it’s about to recover.

By the time investors feel “comfortable” investing again, a significant part of the recovery has often already happened.

And that’s exactly why so many investors underperform—not because they chose the wrong stocks, but because they weren’t invested when it mattered.

The Cost of Waiting

Most people believe successful investing is about perfect timing.

Buying at the bottom.
Selling at the top.

It sounds logical.

The problem is that nobody consistently knows where the bottom or the top is.

Every decision to “wait a little longer” comes with a hidden cost.

The market’s strongest days rarely arrive after everything starts looking positive.

They usually appear when uncertainty is still high.

If you’re sitting on the sidelines waiting for confidence to return, there’s a good chance you’ll miss the very days that drive long-term returns.

Why I Never Like Stopping SIPs During Corrections

Seeing your portfolio in red isn’t easy.

But a correction changes one important thing.

It allows you to buy the same quality businesses at lower prices.

That’s exactly what a SIP is designed for.

Finding those trends early can make all the difference.

When markets become volatile, I don’t spend my time predicting where the index will be next week.

Instead, I ask a few simple questions:

• Which sectors continue to show strength?

• Which companies are consistently delivering strong earnings?

• Which businesses are gaining market share despite uncertainty?

• Which long-term trends are becoming stronger?

These questions are far more valuable than trying to guess tomorrow’s market movement.

The Real Edge

Long-term wealth isn’t built by perfectly timing the market.

It’s built by staying invested, remaining disciplined, and recognising opportunities while everyone else is distracted by fear.

The next time markets correct, don’t just ask whether prices are falling.

Ask yourself:

What is the market quietly rewarding that most people haven’t noticed yet?

That’s what an investor told me when he walked into my office.

He wasn’t new to investing.

He had been consistently investing for years.

So naturally, I asked him to show me his portfolio.

I expected to see 5–6 mutual funds.

Maybe 8.

But what I saw surprised me.

He had built a portfolio filled with multiple mutual fund schemes.

At first glance, it looked diversified.

But after analysing it, the reality was completely different.

The problem wasn’t the number of funds

When I asked him why he invested in so many funds, his answers were common:

“This fund was recommended by a friend.”

“This one was on TV.”

“This one gave the highest returns last year.”

“So I started an SIP in it.”

And this is where many investors make a mistake.

They don’t build portfolios.

They collect recommendations.

Every new fund is added because someone suggested it, not because it serves a specific purpose.

The result?

A portfolio without a strategy.

No clear investment goals.

No proper asset allocation.

No reason why each fund exists.

More mutual funds don’t always mean more diversification

Most investors believe:

More funds = More diversification

But that’s not always true.

Because different mutual funds can still own the same companies.

When I analysed his portfolio, I found that many of his funds had significant overlap in their holdings.

He thought he owned multiple different investments.

But in reality, he was repeatedly getting exposure to similar stocks through different schemes.

The number of funds increased.

But the actual diversification didn’t.

Building a portfolio, not collecting funds

The next step was to analyse every fund.

We looked at:

• Which funds were actually adding value?

• Which funds aligned with his goals?

• Which funds had unnecessary overlap?

• Which investments were helping his overall portfolio?

After removing unnecessary funds, reducing overlap, and creating the right asset allocation...

His portfolio went from multiple schemes to just 4 mutual funds.

But the obvious question was:

“Won’t reducing the number of funds reduce returns?”

The answer was in the data.

The selected 4 schemes were able to generate better returns with a lower drawdown compared to his original portfolio.

Because investing is not about owning more funds.

It’s about building a portfolio that can grow wealth while managing risk.

The lesson

A portfolio with many mutual funds can still be poorly diversified.

A portfolio with fewer funds can still be well structured.

The goal isn’t to find and add a new mutual fund every time someone recommends one.

The goal is to understand:

“What role does this fund play in my portfolio?”

Before adding your next mutual fund, review your existing investments.

You might not need another fund.

You might need a better strategy.

But during periods of volatility, hidden concentration can amplify risk.

Instead of benefiting from true diversification, your portfolio may move in the same direction because many of your funds own similar businesses.

This isn’t necessarily a problem if it’s intentional.

It becomes a problem when investors believe they’re diversified when they actually aren’t.

What True Diversification Looks Like

A well-constructed portfolio isn’t built by collecting mutual funds.

It’s built by ensuring every investment has a purpose.

Before adding another fund, ask yourself:

• Does this investment solve a specific need in my portfolio?

• Does it provide exposure I don’t already have?

• Does it improve my overall asset allocation?

• Does it align with my long-term financial goals?

If the answer is no, another fund may simply be adding complexity—not value.

The Bigger Picture

Successful investing is rarely about finding the “best” mutual fund.

It’s about building a portfolio that can navigate different market environments while remaining aligned with your goals and risk appetite.

The strongest portfolios are often not the ones with the most investments.

They’re the ones where every investment has a clear role.

As investors, we should spend less time asking:

“Which fund should I buy next?”

And more time asking:

“Does my current portfolio already do what I need it to?”

That shift in thinking can make all the difference over the long term.

If you’re entering trading with the expectation of making money every single month, you’re putting unnecessary pressure on yourself.

Instead of focusing on monthly income, focus on improving your process.

The profits usually come as a result of consistency not the other way around.

2. There are no shortcuts.

Everyone wants to know the “best strategy.”

The reality is that strategy is only one piece of the puzzle.

You can buy the best course.

Read every popular trading book.

Watch hundreds of YouTube videos.

None of these things automatically make you profitable.

Because the real challenge begins after you know what to do.

Can you take the next trade after three losses in a row?

Can you avoid revenge trading?

Can you sit patiently for hours without forcing a trade?

Can you follow your risk management rules when you’re tempted to increase your position size?

These questions have very little to do with technical analysis.

They have everything to do with psychology.

And that’s something experience teaches better than any course ever can.

3. Trading is harder than most people think.

Many people enter trading believing they’re competing against other beginners.

They’re not.

Every day, you’re trading in a market filled with professional traders, hedge funds, institutions, and algorithms that process information in milliseconds.

On top of that, you’re also competing against your own emotions.

Fear.

Greed.

Impatience.

Overconfidence.

These are often bigger obstacles than the market itself.

This is one of the reasons why so many traders struggle to become consistently profitable.

Not because trading doesn’t work.

But because they underestimate how demanding it really is.

Final Thoughts

None of this is meant to discourage you from trading.

In fact, I believe trading can be one of the most rewarding professions if you approach it with the right mindset.

But it’s important to have realistic expectations.

Treat trading like a profession.

Accept that there will be losing months.

Focus on improving your decision-making instead of chasing quick profits.

Because in trading, surviving long enough to learn is often the biggest edge you can have.

I did the same.

But over time, I realized that great traders aren’t just good at making money—they’re even better at protecting it.

You don’t need to be right on every trade.

You just need to make sure that when you’re wrong, the damage is small.

Small losses are normal.

Big losses are optional.

Your first job as a trader isn’t to make money. It’s to stay in the game long enough to let your edge play out.

2. The biggest money is made by holding winners.

One mistake I made repeatedly was taking profits too early.

The market would move in my favor, I’d get nervous, book profits, and then watch the trend continue without me.

Over the years, I learned that you don’t need hundreds of extraordinary trades.

Sometimes just a few strong trends in a year can make a significant difference to your returns.

The hard part isn’t finding the trend.

The hard part is having the patience to stay with it.

3. Consistency beats chasing big wins.

Trading is not a competition to see who makes the highest return this month.

It’s a long-term game.

Many traders blow up their accounts because they’re always looking for the next home run.

In reality, successful trading is often boring.

It’s about following your process, managing risk, and making small, consistent gains over time.

Those small gains compound much faster than people realize.

4. A trading journal is one of the best teachers you’ll ever have.

For me, one habit made a huge difference.

Keeping a trading journal.

Every day after the market closes, spend just 10 to 15 minutes reviewing your trades.

Ask yourself:

• What did I do well today?

• Where did I break my rules?

• What can I improve tomorrow?

The goal isn’t to criticize yourself.

The goal is to become a little better every day.

The market gives you feedback every single session.

Your journal helps make sure you actually learn from it.

5. Don’t depend on just one strategy.

Markets don’t stay the same forever.

Sometimes trends are strong.

Sometimes markets move sideways.

Sometimes volatility is high.

Sometimes it’s almost non-existent.

No single strategy performs well in every environment.

That’s why it helps to have multiple uncorrelated systems.

For example, a trend-following strategy can work alongside a mean reversion or non-directional strategy.

When one struggles, another may perform well.

This can reduce drawdowns and make your overall returns more stable over the long run.

Final Thoughts

After more than a decade in the markets, I’ve realized something simple.

The market has a way of humbling everyone.

No one wins all the time.

The traders who survive aren’t necessarily the smartest or the most talented.

They’re the ones who manage risk, stay patient, review their mistakes, and keep adapting.

Most of my biggest lessons came from losing trades, not winning ones.

And looking back, I’m grateful they did.

Because those lessons shaped the trader I am today.

Meet Samuel Benner

Samuel Benner wasn’t a Wall Street analyst.

He was a farmer from Ohio.

After losing a significant portion of his wealth during the financial panic of the 1870s, Benner became obsessed with understanding why markets seemed to rise and fall in repeating patterns.

Instead of accepting market crashes as random events, he spent years studying nearly 90 years of historical commodity prices, business cycles, and economic data.

His findings were eventually published in 1875 in a book titled Benner’s Prophecies of Future Ups and Downs in Prices.

Inside was a chart that attempted to identify recurring cycles in financial markets.

The Benner Cycle

Benner believed markets followed repeating waves driven by human psychology and economic activity.

His chart divided years into:

• Years to buy

• Years to sell

• Years when panic and major corrections were likely

At first glance, it sounds almost impossible.

After all, how could someone from the 1800s predict modern financial markets?

Yet that’s exactly why the Benner Cycle continues to attract attention.

The Years That Made People Notice

Over time, investors noticed that several years identified as weak or panic years lined up surprisingly well with major global market downturns.

Some commonly cited examples include:

• 1929 – The Wall Street Crash

• 1973 – Oil Crisis and global bear market

• 2000 – Dot-com bubble burst

• 2008 – Global Financial Crisis

Does this prove the cycle works?

Not necessarily.

Financial markets are influenced by interest rates, wars, inflation, policy decisions, technology, demographics, and countless unpredictable events.

Still, the historical alignment is interesting enough that the Benner Cycle continues to be discussed by market historians and investors alike.

What About India?

Supporters of the cycle point out that 2023 was identified as a potential bottoming year.

Coincidentally, the Indian market also experienced a meaningful correction before recovering strongly.

The Nifty fell toward 16,800 before climbing back above 20,000 and continuing its upward trend.

Is that evidence the cycle predicted India’s market?

Probably not.

But it reminds us that markets have always experienced periods of pessimism followed by recovery.

What Does the Cycle Suggest Next?

According to many interpretations of the Benner Cycle:

• 2026 could represent another major market peak.

• A longer-term expansion could continue toward 2035.

Of course, nobody knows whether those projections will actually play out.

Markets don’t follow charts perfectly.

History rarely repeats exactly.

But it often rhymes.

The Real Lesson Isn’t Prediction

This is where most people misunderstand the Benner Cycle.

The value isn’t in believing every date on the chart.

The value is recognizing that markets are cyclical because people are cyclical.

Fear.

Greed.

Euphoria.

Panic.

Every generation believes its market is different.

Yet investor behavior changes very little.

Prices eventually recover because businesses continue to grow, economies continue to expand, and innovation never stops for long.

What Should Investors Actually Do?

Rather than trying to predict the exact top or bottom, focus on the principles that have consistently worked across generations:

• Invest regularly.

• Stay diversified.

• Continue your SIPs during corrections.

• Think in years not weeks.

• Let compounding do the heavy lifting.

Trying to perfectly time the market is incredibly difficult.

Remaining invested through multiple market cycles has historically been far more rewarding.

Final Thoughts

Whether Samuel Benner discovered a genuine market rhythm or simply an extraordinary coincidence may never be settled.

But one truth has survived every crash, every recession, and every bull market:

Patient investors have consistently been rewarded over the long run.

That’s why judging an investment after just one year can be misleading.

It’s like watching the first ten minutes of a movie and deciding whether it’s good or bad.

The story hasn’t fully unfolded yet.

Year 3: The Noise Begins to Fade

By the third year, some of the short-term volatility starts to matter less.

A market correction that felt devastating in year one often becomes just a small bump when viewed over a three-year period.

Investors also begin to develop confidence.

They’ve experienced market ups and downs and learned that volatility is a normal part of investing.

The roots of the tree are growing deeper.

Year 5: Stability Starts Appearing

Five years is where investing begins to feel different.

Many temporary setbacks have had time to recover.

Market cycles that once looked dramatic become less significant when viewed from a longer perspective.

This doesn’t guarantee positive returns, but it significantly improves the odds compared to shorter holding periods.

At this stage, patience starts getting rewarded.

The tree is no longer fragile.

It’s becoming strong and resilient.

Year 7 and Beyond: Let Compounding Work

This is where the real magic happens.

Compounding is often called the eighth wonder of the world, but it needs one ingredient above all else:

Time.

When returns begin generating returns, wealth can grow at an accelerating pace.

Historically, the likelihood of experiencing negative outcomes in equity investments has tended to decrease as the investment horizon extends.

Short-term fluctuations still occur, but they become less important compared to the long-term growth trend.

The tree finally begins bearing fruit.

Most investors spend their time searching for the perfect stock, the best mutual fund, or the next big opportunity.

But the greatest investing edge is often much simpler.

Patience.

The market doesn’t reward those who constantly jump from one investment to another.

It rewards those who stay invested through uncertainty and allow compounding to do its work.

The 7-5-3-1 Rule is a reminder that investing is less about predicting the future and more about giving your money enough time to grow.

Most people choose a mutual fund by checking exactly one thing: how much return it gave.

That’s a bit like buying a car only by checking its top speed. What about mileage? Comfort? How it handles bumps on the highway? You’d never buy a car that way yet that’s how most of us pick where we put our money.

Here are 8 things that tell you a lot more about a fund. None of these need a finance degree to understand just everyday comparisons.

1. Benchmarking

Imagine your friend tells you, “I scored 75 in the exam.” Sounds pretty good, right?

But then you find out the whole class scored 90. Suddenly, 75 doesn’t look so great anymore.

Benchmarking is exactly this idea applied to investing comparing a fund’s performance to the overall market (its “class average”), so you know whether it actually did well, or just looked good sitting on its own.

A fund that returned 12% sounds great until you learn the market returned 18% over the same period.

2. Beta

This tells you how a fund reacts when the market moves.

Think about how different people react during a horror movie. Some stay completely calm through every jump scare. Others flinch and yelp at the smallest creak of a door.

Beta tells you which type your fund is does it move calmly along with the market, or does it overreact in both directions, swinging higher on the way up and falling harder on the way down?

If you don’t like surprises, a lower-beta fund might suit you better. If you’re comfortable with bigger swings for potentially bigger gains, a higher-beta fund could be fine.

3. Standard Deviation

Two funds can end up at exactly the same destination, but the journey to get there can feel completely different.

One fund might have given you a smooth, steady ride slow and steady gains, month after month. The other might have felt like a rollercoaster sharp drops, sudden jumps, constant ups and downs even if it landed at the same final number.

Standard deviation simply tells you how bumpy that ride actually was.

If you’re someone who checks your portfolio often and gets anxious seeing red, this number matters more than you’d think.

4. Sharpe Ratio

Okay, so the ride was bumpy. But here’s the real question: was it worth it?

The Sharpe ratio basically asks for all those ups and downs you went through, did you actually get rewarded enough for putting up with them?

A higher Sharpe ratio means yes the extra risk you took on actually translated into extra reward. A low Sharpe ratio means you went through all that turbulence for not much extra in return.

This is one of the most useful single numbers for comparing two funds with similar returns but very different “rides.”

5. Sortino Ratio

Here’s something interesting about human nature nobody ever complains about the “good” bumps. Nobody’s upset that their fund suddenly jumped up 5% in a week. The complaints only come during the falls.

The Sortino ratio is built around this exact insight. It’s similar to the Sharpe ratio, but it only looks at the downside the falls, not the rises.

A good Sortino ratio means the fund cushions you better specifically when things go wrong, which is often when it matters most.

6. Capture Ratios

This one has two simple parts, and together they tell a complete story:

Upside capture — when the market goes up, how much of that “up” did your fund actually pass on to you?

Downside capture — when the market falls, how much did your fund fall along with it?

Ideally, you want a fund that shows up enthusiastically to the party on good days, but stays a little distant when things turn bad. A fund with high upside capture and low downside capture is, in a sense, giving you the best of both worlds.

7. Fund Age

This one’s refreshingly simple how long has this fund actually been around?

A fund that’s 1–2 years old hasn’t really been tested yet. It might look great on paper simply because it hasn’t lived through a difficult period.

A fund that’s 10+ years old, on the other hand, has already been through market crashes, recoveries, booms, and slowdowns. There’s real, lived data on how it behaves under pressure not just how it performs when everything’s going well.

Track record isn’t everything, but it’s not nothing either.

8. Portfolio Turnover

This tells you how often the fund manager is buying and selling stocks inside the fund.

Some managers keep shuffling the portfolio frequently constantly buying new stocks and exiting old ones, reacting to news and trends.

Others pick a handful of good companies and simply sit tight for years, barely touching the portfolio.

Neither approach is inherently right or wrong it just tells you the manager’s style, and whether that style matches how you think about investing.

Putting it all together

None of these are scary once you break them down. Every single one of them is really just answering two questions: how smooth was the journey, and was it worth taking?

The next time someone throws around terms like “Sharpe ratio” or “capture ratio” like they’re supposed to mean something to you instantly you’ll know exactly what they’re talking about.

In 1929, the US stock market collapsed.

Not slowly. Not gradually. It cratered and took millions of people down with it. Families lost everything. Banks shut their doors. Fortunes built over lifetimes disappeared in days.

While all of this was happening, one man made $100 million. In a single day.

His name was Jesse Livermore. And his story is the most important thing anyone who has ever touched the markets should read.

He didn’t get lucky. He prepared.

Livermore didn’t wake up on October 29, 1929 and stumble into a windfall. He had spent months getting ready for exactly this moment journaling his trades obsessively, defining his entry and exit rules down to the last detail, sizing his positions with surgical precision.

When the crash came, he was already short the market.

No last-minute panic. No scrambling. His system just… ran. Exactly as designed.

While everyone else was losing their minds his wasn’t involved at all.

This is the part people don’t talk about enough.

Livermore’s edge wasn’t intelligence. It wasn’t some secret indicator or a better read on the economy. It was the ability to remove himself from his own decisions.

No hesitation. No second-guessing. No fear.

Just logic. Running consistently.

But here’s the part of the story no one tells you.

Livermore went bankrupt four times.

Four.

And every single time, the reason was the same: he abandoned his system. He took tips from friends. He traded on instinct. He let emotion override logic and paid for it completely.

Every time he made it back? He went back to the same rules. Not a new strategy. Not a better tool. The same system he had always trusted.

The market didn’t beat Jesse Livermore.

It’s you. Your gut feel at 2pm when a position is down. Your overconfidence after three good trades in a row. Your inability to sit on your hands when everything in you wants to do something.

The real lesson from one of history’s greatest traders?

The system is never the problem. Abandoning the system is.

Here’s the part that very few people talk about and it completely reframes how you should think about market crashes.

Those 15 best days? They didn’t happen during calm, optimistic bull markets when it felt safe to be invested.

They happened during crashes.

7 of the top 10 single best days in Indian market history occurred within 2 weeks of the worst 10 days.

Think about what that means in practice. The moment of maximum fear the day the portfolio is bleeding the most, the day every news channel is catastrophising, the day your gut says “get out” is statistically one of the closest moments to the biggest recovery bounce.

The investors who stayed invested through the fear captured both sides. The investors who sold captured only the fall.

The numbers don’t lie

Let’s look at specific historical moments.

During the 2008 Global Financial Crisis widely considered one of the worst market collapses in modern history 22 of the top 30 best single days in Indian markets occurred. Not after the crisis. During it.

During the Covid crash of 2020, 4 of the best days happened in the same window.

And here’s the one that hits hardest: March 23rd, 2020 was the single worst day of that year. Nifty fell off a cliff. Panic was everywhere. Retail investors were selling in droves.

The very next trading day was the 2nd best day of 2020.

Every investor who sold on March 23rd trying to cut their losses, trying to be sensible missed the entire recovery that followed.

Why “I’ll get back in later” never works

The logic sounds clean: get out now, let the dust settle, re-enter when it feels safe.

The problem is that “when it feels safe” is always after the recovery has already happened.

By the time the news turns positive, by the time analysts are cautiously optimistic, by the time your social media feed stops being doom-and-gloom the market has already repriced. The best days are already baked in. You’re buying back at higher levels, having sold at the lows, and having missed the bounce entirely.

This is not a theory. It’s what the data shows, decade after decade.

What the long-term numbers actually say

If you’re still not convinced that time is the real edge, look at this:

Holding for 1 day → 46% chance of loss

Holding for 1 year → 22% chance of loss

THE BLIND SPOT IN TRADING EDUCATION

If you’ve spent any time studying trading, you’ve consumed a lot of content about strategy. Which indicators to use. How to identify a trend. Where the confluence is. When the setup is clean enough to take.

You’ve probably also read about psychology. Discipline. Patience. Not letting emotions drive decisions. Keeping a trading journal.

And risk management position sizing, risk-per-trade, the 1% rule it gets covered too, usually early.

But here is what almost no course, book, or mentor spends serious time on: what do you actually do once you’re in the trade?

The entry is a moment. The exit is a moment. But the trade itself can last minutes, hours, or days. And during that entire window, you are making active decisions or failing to that determine whether your edge actually shows up in your results.

This is trade management. And it is the missing layer for most traders who are stuck.

A THOUGHT EXPERIMENT

Imagine two traders. Same strategy. Same setup. Same entry price on the same instrument at the same time.

Trader A exits at a small loss when the trade pulls back slightly against them, gets frustrated, re-enters emotionally, holds a losing position too long hoping it recovers, and gives back the week’s gains in one afternoon.

Trader B moves their stop to breakeven once the trade shows momentum, takes partial profits at the first key level, trails the remainder, and closes with a clean 2R winner.

Same entry. Completely different outcomes. The difference has nothing to do with strategy, indicators, or market knowledge.

It’s entirely about how the open trade was managed.

THE FIVE THINGS THAT ACTUALLY MOVE THE NEEDLE

1. Moving your stop to breakeven

This sounds simple. It isn’t.

Move your stop to breakeven too early and you get stopped out before the trade has room to breathe only to watch it go to target without you. Move it too late and a perfectly good winner becomes a loser when the market retraces.

The question most traders never answer for themselves: what specific condition must be met before I move to breakeven? Price reaching a certain level? A certain number of pips in profit? A close beyond a key structure? It doesn’t matter which rule you choose what matters is that you have one, and that you apply it consistently.

2. Knowing when to close early

Markets change. A setup that looked clean at entry can deteriorate. Price can stall at a level you didn’t fully account for. A news event can shift the structure.

Most traders close early for two bad reasons: fear when the trade is slightly against them, or greed when it moves in their direction and they suddenly want more. Neither of these is a signal.

A real early-close rule is objective. Define it before you’re in the trade, while your mind is clear.

3. Trailing stops done properly

Trailing stops are one of the most misunderstood tools in retail trading. Used well, they let you ride a trend without giving back all your gains. Used poorly, they’ll stop you out right before a move extends significantly.

Trail by structure. Move your stop to just below the previous swing low as the market makes new highs. Let the market define its own rhythm rather than imposing an arbitrary number on it.

4. Taking partial profits

This is perhaps the highest-impact change a struggling trader can make.

When you take 50% of your position off at the first significant target, something psychological shifts. You’ve booked a real gain. The rest of the trade is now playing with house money. The emotional pressure lifts. Your decision-making on the remainder improves dramatically because you’re no longer afraid of losing what you had.

5. Re-entry rules

You exit a trade early. It continues in your direction. Now what?

Without a clear re-entry rule, you have two bad options: chase it impulsively, or sit on the sidelines watching it run. A re-entry rule defines exactly when it’s acceptable to get back in. Whatever the rule, having it removes the FOMO and gives you a rational framework for acting or choosing not to.

WHY THIS MATTERS MORE THAN YOUR STRATEGY

Most retail traders are already using strategies that have a positive edge in the market. The edge is real. But it never shows up in their actual results because trade management destroys it before it can compound.

The fix isn’t a better strategy. It’s building a framework for how you handle trades that are already open and following it with the same discipline you apply to your entries.

WHERE TO START

Go back through your last 20 to 30 trades. Not to analyze entries look specifically at what happened after entry.

How many times did you move your stop before your rule said to? How many times did you close early out of fear, only to watch the trade hit target? How many winners did you hold too long until they reversed into losses?

The patterns will be clear. And they’ll tell you exactly which part of your trade management framework needs the most work.

Build the rules. Write them down. Test them on historical data if you can. Then apply them on your next 20 trades and observe what changes.

Most traders who do this seriously are surprised by how quickly their results shift not because the market changed, but because they finally stopped getting in their own way after entry.

It doesn’t have to end that way. Below are the ten mistakes that kill more accounts than any market crash ever could. Read them not as warnings, but as a mirror.

1. Trading Without a Plan

Walking into a trade without a plan is like walking into a casino without a budget entertaining until it isn’t. A trading plan forces you to define your entry, your exit, and your risk before emotion enters the picture. It transforms randomness into consistency. Without one, you’re not trading. You’re guessing.

2. Overtrading

The market is always open. Your edge is not. New traders mistake activity for progress they need to feel in the game. But every unnecessary trade is a fee you pay to feel busy. The best traders often spend most of their time doing nothing, waiting for high-probability setups. Quality always beats quantity.

3. Risking Too Much Per Trade

Even the best strategy loses. The question isn’t whether you’ll have losing trades it’s whether you survive them. Risking 20% of your account on a single trade isn’t bold; it’s reckless. Risk management isn’t optional. It’s the only reason professional traders are still around to trade tomorrow.

“The goal of every trade isn’t to make money. It’s to still be around for the next one.”

4. Emotional Trading

Fear makes you exit winners too early. Greed makes you hold losers too long. Together, they override every rule you set when you were thinking clearly. The antidote isn’t to feel less it’s to decide more in advance. If your plan is written, your emotions have less room to rewrite it in real time.

5. No Stop Loss

Every trader who has ever held a losing position “just a little longer” knows how this ends. A stop loss isn’t an admission of failure it’s an acknowledgment that you’re human and that markets are unpredictable. Protect your downside always. The upside takes care of itself.

6. Revenge Trading

You take a loss. Your instinct says make it back immediately. So you take a bigger position, lower your standards, and force a trade that was never there. Now you have two losses. Losses are part of the game every professional knows this. The market doesn’t owe you a recovery. Walk away and come back tomorrow.

7. Blindly Copying Others

Following someone else’s trade signals sounds like a shortcut. It’s actually a trap. Even if their strategy is profitable, you’ll exit at the wrong times because you don’t understand the logic and you’ll panic when they don’t. A strategy you understand imperfectly will always outperform one you follow blindly.

8. Ignoring Market Conditions

A breakout strategy that works beautifully in a trending market will get chopped to pieces in a ranging one. Markets shift between regimes constantly. Traders who don’t adapt aren’t being consistent they’re being inflexible. Read the environment first. Then choose your weapon.

9. Unrealistic Expectations

The fantasy of turning $1,000 into $100,000 in six months attracts people to trading and destroys them just as fast. When expectations are unrealistic, every normal losing streak feels like catastrophe. Sustainable trading means compounding small edges consistently over years. It’s boring. It’s also how the professionals do it.

10. Not Reviewing Trades

Every trade you make win or lose is data. Traders who journal their entries, exits, emotions, and reasoning learn at ten times the speed of those who don’t. Patterns emerge. Weaknesses become visible. The market charges tuition on every lesson; you might as well take notes.

None of these mistakes are exotic. They’re not caused by lacking intelligence or access to information. They’re caused by pressure, impatience, and the deeply human desire to make things work right now.

The traders who survive long enough to become profitable aren’t the most talented. They’re the most disciplined. They made every mistake on this list and then they stopped making them.

That’s the real edge.

I disagree.

Markets have always been difficult. What changes is not the market — it’s your exposure to it. The longer you trade, the more risk events you personally experience. And each one leaves a mark.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. So I decided to compile some of the most significant risk events of the past two decades real incidents, real losses, real lessons and share what each one teaches us about surviving in this profession.

Because here’s the hard truth: risk isn’t something that happens to bad traders. It happens to everyone.

The only difference is whether you were prepared.

1. Gap Risk — 18th May 2009

On paper, this was supposed to be just another trading day.

Markets opened at 9:55 AM. By 10:01 AM, Nifty had hit a 20% upper circuit. Trading froze immediately. The market was open for exactly six minutes.

Traders with overnight positions had no time to react, hedge, or exit. You either made a fortune or lost one and neither outcome was in your control.

Gap risk is the risk that the market opens at a dramatically different level than where it closed. It can go both ways. And in those six minutes in May 2009, it reminded every trader in India just how little control we actually have.

The lesson: Never carry more overnight risk than you can afford to lose entirely. Gaps don’t give second chances.

2. Vega Risk — 24th August 2015

This one still confuses people when they hear it for the first time.

On August 24th, 2015, Nifty fell close to 490 points nearly 6% in a single session. A massive, clearly bearish day.

So why did far out-of-the-money Call options go up in price?

Because India VIX the volatility index exploded by 64% in that single session. When fear spikes that violently, implied volatility shoots up across the board, inflating option premiums regardless of direction.

Options sellers who thought they were safe on the call side got hit hard. Their positions moved against them even though the market moved in their “favour.”

This is Vega risk. The risk that volatility itself moves against you independent of which direction the market goes.

The lesson: When you sell options, you’re not just taking a directional view. You’re taking a volatility view. Respect it.

3. Gamma Risk — 26th September 2019

Expiry days have a reputation for being wild. But this one was extraordinary.

The Nifty 30000 CE deeply out of the money went from ₹50 to over ₹1,000 within minutes. Then, as quickly as it rose, it collapsed back and closed at ₹0.

Traders holding short positions in that strike with high leverage were devastated. The margin calls came fast and furious. Many couldn’t exit in time.

Gamma is the rate at which an option’s delta changes. Near expiry, near-the-money options have explosive Gamma small moves in the underlying cause massive swings in option prices. It cuts both ways, but for those on the wrong side with leverage, it’s catastrophic.

The lesson: On expiry day, reduce position sizes. Gamma near expiry is not a risk to manage it’s a risk to respect.

4. Flash Crash — May 2019

No warning. No news. No logic.

Bank Nifty dropped 1,000+ points intraday from 31,783 to 30,623 then recovered. Stop losses triggered at terrible prices. Options exploded. Perfectly positioned traders walked out confused and deeply down.

The lesson: Size your positions so that even a flash crash doesn’t wipe you out. That’s the only real protection.

5. Black Swan — March 2020

Nifty hit a 10% lower circuit. Trading halted for 45 minutes. Sensex was down 3,300 points before noon then closed 1,300 points in the green. A 4,600 point swing in a single session.

You cannot predict Black Swans. But you can ensure that when one arrives, you survive it.

The lesson: Survival is the only goal when a Black Swan lands. Hedges and position sizing are your only shield.

6. Algo Risk — August 2012

Knight Capital’s faulty algorithm executed trades in 397 million shares within 45 minutes creating billions in unintended positions. The loss? $460 million in a single day. The firm never recovered.

The lesson: Algo trading requires more discipline than manual trading, not less. Kill switches and position limits are not optional they are survival tools.

7. Price Can Go Below Zero — April 2020

WTI Crude oil didn’t just crash it went to negative $37 per barrel. Storage was full, demand had collapsed, and sellers were literally paying buyers to take oil off their hands.

Every risk model said this was impossible. It happened anyway.

The lesson: Remove “it can’t happen” from your trading vocabulary. Your risk management must account for scenarios you haven’t even imagined yet.

8. Exchange Glitch — February 2021

NSE faced a technical glitch and trading was halted for the entire day. Traders couldn’t hedge, couldn’t exit, couldn’t do anything. The exchange was down and you were completely frozen.

The lesson: Always have a plan for when your broker, exchange, or internet fails. It’s not paranoia it’s preparation.

9. Liquidity Risk — A Personal Story

I had sold JustDial 500 CE on MIS when spot was at 485. Quantity: 2.68 lakh. By 3:19 PM I was sitting on a ₹1.5L profit. Trade was working perfectly.

At 3:20 PM, my MTM showed -₹18.3 lakhs.

₹20 lakhs gone in sixty seconds. Not because my view was wrong but because at auto square-off time, everyone tried to exit simultaneously and there were simply no buyers. The bid-ask spread blew out to levels that made rational pricing impossible.

The lesson: Always check liquidity before you enter. OTM options and thin markets are liquidity traps waiting to spring.

What Do We Do With All of This?

The traders who last in this profession are not the smartest ones. They’re the ones who take risk seriously every single day, even on the boring days.

• Know your risks before you enter, not after

• Position sizing is everything - when you size correctly, you survive the unexpected

• Respect the market - it has been humbling traders for centuries and will continue long after we’re gone

We chose this profession. We signed up for gap risk, black swans, flash crashes, and liquidity traps. We cannot complain when risk shows up.

All we can do is be prepared.

At 2:32 PM (ET), U.S. stocks began to fall.

At 2:42 PM, the fall turned into panic.

Within minutes, nearly $1 trillion in market value disappeared.

Blue-chip stocks plunged. Some briefly traded for absurd prices pennies, even. Then, just as suddenly, the market bounced back.

For traders watching live, it felt unreal.

For regulators, it was a nightmare.

And for years, no one could fully explain what had happened.

A Crash That Made No Sense

The event would later be called the 2010 Flash Crash.

But in those first moments, there was no name only confusion.

How could the most liquid market in the world collapse in minutes and recover just as fast ?

Early theories flooded in:

• A massive institutional sell order

• A glitch in trading systems

• High-frequency trading gone wrong

All of them made sense.

None of them told the full story.

The Unexpected Name

Years later, investigators found something surprising.

The trail didn’t lead to Wall Street.

It led to a modest home in London.

Inside was a trader named Navinder Sarao.

He wasn’t running a hedge fund.

He didn’t have a team of analysts.

He wasn’t managing billions.

He was trading alone.

A Strategy Few Understood

Sarao traded S&P 500 futures, one of the most important financial instruments in the world.

But his method was unusual and controversial.

He used a technique known as spoofing.

In simple terms, spoofing means placing large orders in the market with no intention of executing them.

These orders create an illusion:

• It looks like there’s heavy buying or selling pressure

• Other traders react to that signal

• Prices begin to move

And just before the orders are executed they’re canceled.

To a human trader, this might be misleading.

To an algorithm, it’s a trigger.

When Machines Took Over

By 2010, markets had already changed.

Trading was no longer dominated by humans shouting on exchange floors.

It was increasingly driven by algorithms fast, automated systems reacting to market data in milliseconds.

When Sarao placed large sell orders, these systems detected what looked like massive selling pressure.

They reacted instantly.

And then other systems reacted to those systems.

A chain reaction began.

Selling accelerated.

Liquidity disappeared.

Prices collapsed.

All in minutes.

One Trader, Global Impact

Regulators later concluded that Sarao’s activity contributed to the crash.

Not caused it alone but amplified it.

This was the part that stunned the world.

A single trader, working from home, had interacted with global systems in a way that helped destabilize markets worth trillions.

It raised uncomfortable questions:

• How fragile are modern markets?

• How much control do algorithms really have?

• And how small can a trigger be… for a massive reaction?

The Aftermath

Years later, Sarao was arrested and charged by U.S. authorities.

His case became a symbol of a new kind of risk in financial markets.

Not just economic risk.

Structural risk.

The kind that comes from speed, automation, and complexity.

Meanwhile, regulators began tightening rules around spoofing and algorithmic trading.

Markets evolved.

But the underlying reality didn’t change.

What the Flash Crash Really Taught Us

At first glance, the Flash Crash looked like a glitch.

But it was more than that.

It was a warning.

Modern markets are:

• Faster than ever

• More interconnected than ever

• And increasingly driven by machines

In such a system, small actions can create massive consequences.

Not because of intention.

But because of interaction.

The Deeper Lesson

For most people, this story is shocking.

For traders, it’s something else.

It’s a reminder.

Markets are not always rational.

They are systems of:

• Data

• Behavior

• Technology

And sometimes, those systems behave in unpredictable ways.

Understanding this doesn’t just make you a better trader.

It makes you a more aware participant in modern markets.

Final Thought

A trader sitting in his bedroom didn’t “break” the market.

But he exposed something important:

In a world run by algorithms, even the smallest signal can echo across the entire system.

And when it does

In August 2016, I experienced the biggest intraday loss of my career. I had shorted Just Dial 500 CE options and was sitting comfortably in a profit of ₹1.3 lakh at 3:19 PM. Everything looked normal.

One minute later, at 3:20 PM, my screen showed something I couldn’t believe.
