There’s a phrase I carry with me from my training as an end-of-life doula:

Living well, dying well.

The two are more connected than we sometimes realize.

How we live shapes how we leave. And often, the way we prepare to leave can be one more expression of how we have chosen to live.

Dolly Parton showed us something of that this week.

She died at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer. Her death was announced by her nephew, Bryan, who had been her head of security for more than two decades.

But what moved me most was learning that this wasn’t simply the person who happened to be there when she died.

Dolly had chosen him years ago.

She chose the voice that would tell us

Years earlier, Dolly had asked Bryan to be the one to announce her death when the time came.

He spoke on behalf of their family in a video shared with the world, just as she had asked him to.

There is something incredibly tender about that to me.

She knew that one day her family would have to make that call. She knew there would be a moment when the world would want to know. And she quietly decided, while she was well enough to decide, who she wanted to carry that responsibility.

It reminds me of something I see again and again in my work.

These conversations can feel uncomfortable when we imagine having them for ourselves. Who should know what? Who should speak for us? What would we want our family to know? What matters to us at the end?

But once those decisions are made, they can become a gift.

Not because they make grief easier.

Nothing can do that.

Dolly had already made that choice.

Then there was the cotton

And then came the detail that really stayed with me.

Bryan shared that Dolly wanted to rest in “a beautiful bed of plush cotton” because, after a lifetime of wearing heavy rhinestones, she wanted to be comfortable and have some rest.

I love the simplicity of it.

This woman spent decades becoming synonymous with sparkle. Rhinestones, sequins, towering hair, costumes that caught the light from the back row.

And when she imagined her final resting place, she wanted softness.

Cotton.

Comfort.

There is something very Dolly about that too.

It makes me think about the things we carry through our lives. Some of them are beautiful. Some are part of who we are. Some we have chosen with great joy.

There doesn’t have to be a lesson in that.

Sometimes we are just ready.

And I think there is something deeply loving about giving ourselves permission to say so.

Look at what she leaves behind

Dolly’s legacy is enormous, but what touches me most isn’t the size of it.

It’s the way so much of it became useful to someone else.

Her Imagination Library has now gifted almost 305 million free books to children around the world, inspired in part by her father, who could not read or write.

She created opportunities for children in the community where she grew up.

When wildfires destroyed more than 1000 homes in Sevier County in 2016, she created the My People Fund, giving families who had lost their homes $1000 a month for six months.

And she quietly helped in countless other ways, from children’s healthcare and scholarships to disaster relief.

So much of what she gave was designed to keep going.

A book arrives at a child’s house.

A family gets through another month.

A young person gets an opportunity they might not otherwise have had.

Someone gets a chance.

And then, perhaps years later, something grows from it that Dolly will never see.

What she leaves us

So, thank you, Dolly for showing us, in such a very Dolly way, that thinking about the end of life can help us pay closer attention to what matters most.

Who do we want beside us?

What do we want our family to know?

What do we want to leave behind?

What are we ready to put down?

And perhaps most importantly:

What would make us comfortable?

Dolly had some of her answers.

A person she trusted to tell the story.
A private goodbye with family.
A bed of plush cotton.
And a lifetime of songs, books, opportunities and kindness already moving out into the world without her.

So today, I think we can grieve Dolly.
And we can celebrate her.

We can put on Jolene and sing along.
We can smile at the Dollyisms.
We can remember the woman in the rhinestones.

And we can picture her somewhere soft, finally resting.

For years, I’ve sat beside people while they let go.

A drawer. A wardrobe. A whole house, sometimes, in the tender weeks after a loss.

And every time, the same quiet truth surfaces:

This week, I’m taking my own advice.

I’m turning off paid subscriptions here, and Circle of Joy will close after September.

This is not goodbye

I want to say that outright, because I know how endings can land.

Circle of Joy isn’t closing because it failed. It’s closing because something new is asking to be born - and I can’t fully create it while I’m still tending to the old shape.

For a while now, I’ve been feeling the pull toward something deeper. More spacious.

That something will open in January 2027.

Why turn off paid subscriptions now?

I could keep subscriptions running while I work behind the scenes.

But it doesn’t feel right.

If I’m asking myself to create space, I want to actually make it - not fill it with a monthly charge for something I’m no longer pouring myself into.

So I’m clearing the shelf.

And it turns out taking your own advice is far less tidy than giving it.

This is the work I teach, turned inward: letting go of something good to make room for something truer.

What I’m taking with me

More than anything, I’m taking you with me.

The messages that arrived at exactly the right moment.

The photos of a shelf finally cleared, a table set beautifully for one, a box of sentimental things finally opened and shared with family.

The way you showed up for one another in our sessions - strangers at first, then something much closer. Holding space while someone released and shared something they’d been afraid to touch for years.

The membership may be changing form, but the friendships don’t have to end.

And that is what I’m most grateful for.

When we think about grief, most of us think about death.

As an end-of-life doula, grief is something I spend a lot of time with. But I’ve come to understand that grief isn’t only about losing someone.

We grieve whenever something meaningful ends.

A marriage.
A relationship.
A friendship.
A career.
A home.
Our children leaving home.
Retirement.
A version of ourselves.

And sometimes we’re not just grieving the person.

When a chapter ends

This can be especially profound in mid-life and beyond.

We may have spent decades building a life around our relationships, our homes, our careers, our families and our roles.

And then something changes.

A divorce or breakup can leave you grieving not only your partner, but the routines, traditions, friendships, home and future you imagined.

And suddenly there’s a question:

What do we do with all the things?

Our homes hold our stories.

Photographs.
Wedding gifts.
Letters.
Furniture.
Holiday souvenirs.
Objects that once represented a shared life.

This is where my work with the KonMari Method comes in.

KonMari isn’t about erasing the past.

It’s about consciously choosing what we want to carry forward.

Instead of asking:

“Should I keep this?”

we can ask:

Sometimes the answer is yes.

Sometimes we’re ready to let something go.

Not because it didn’t matter.

But because it did.

We can honour what something meant to us without needing to carry it forever.

And this isn’t only about possessions.

What else might we be carrying?

Old stories.
Expectations.
Relationships.
Identities.
Versions of ourselves that belonged to another chapter.

What brings me joy now?

After an ending, we can become so focused on what we’ve lost that we forget to ask what we might want next.

So perhaps the question becomes:

Not what brought us joy.

Not what your family expects.

Not what you’ve always done.

What do you want your home to feel like?

How do you want to spend your time?

Who do you want around you?

What are you curious about?

What makes you feel alive?

You don’t have to know exactly what the next chapter looks like.

You can simply begin making space for it.

A joyful legacy

This is where my work as an end-of-life doula comes full circle.

I talk about joyful legacy — but I don’t think legacy is only something we leave behind when we die.

Through what we value.

What we choose.

What we keep.

What we release.

And how intentionally we use the time we have.

So perhaps a life transition is not only an ending.

Perhaps it is an invitation to pause and ask:

What matters now?

What am I ready to let go of?

What do I want to carry forward?

And what am I ready to make space for?

We don’t make space because the past didn’t matter.

We make space because our life is still unfolding.

And there is joy waiting for us in the chapter we haven’t written yet.

Greed doesn’t always look like reaching for more.

Sometimes it looks like a drawer you can’t close. A closet still full of someone else’s clothes. A box, then another box, then a room.

We don’t mean it as greed. We mean it as love.

We keep the robe because it still smells like her, and the ticket stubs because he was there, and the chipped mug because throwing it away feels like throwing away a morning we’ll never get back.

So we keep all of it. Far more than we need. Often more than we’ll ever look at again.

Here is the tender truth: keeping everything is not the same as keeping them.

Somewhere under the forty scarves is the one she actually wore, the one that would make you smile. You just can’t find her in the pile.

This is where most of us go wrong, and it isn’t a failure of heart.

It’s a failure of order.

We walk into the grief and reach straight for the hardest thing. The letters. The photographs. A sweater that still holds their shape. We start where the charge is highest, and within an hour we are so tired of deciding that “keep” becomes the only answer we have left.

There’s a reason the KonMari Method saves the sentimental for last. You don’t build the muscle by lifting the heaviest weight first. You start somewhere softer. The T-shirts. The socks. You practice choosing on things that don’t ache as deeply, so that by the time you reach the letters, you feel supported to choose consciously.

Keeping everything asks nothing of you. Choosing what to keep is the harder, truer act of love.

Start where it’s quiet. Arrive at the tender things last.

Shira Gill’s guide to making a “death binder”. One central place for the accounts, the documents, the details your family would need if something happened to you.

She’s right about the heart of it.

Getting your affairs in order is one of the most loving things you can do.

Grieving is hard enough without sending the people you love on a hunt through drawers for a password, with no map and no one to ask.

So please hear me. This is not a disagreement.

It’s an invitation to a gentler version of the same act of love.

Because as I read it, I kept catching on two small words.

Death binder.

I’ve sat with those two words more than most.

As an end-of-life doula, I believe in saying death out loud. Naming it is part of the work. The avoiding is what quietly runs our lives from the shadows. When we can speak it plainly, something in us softens.

And I also know exactly how that phrase lands in the body.

Heavy. Clinical. A little cold.

Something you flinch from and file under someday.

Language shapes whether we lean in, or look away. And most of us, faced with a “death binder,” look away. We mean to get to it. We rarely do.

Think of how Marie Kondo talks about tidying.

She doesn’t call it getting rid of your stuff. She calls it a tidying festival. A celebration. A moment of gratitude and choosing.

That one reframe changes how it feels to begin. And how it feels to begin is usually the difference between beginning and not.

The same is true here.

So what is a Joyful Legacy folder, really?

It holds the practical, yes. The accounts, the documents, the passwords. All the things a good binder would.

But it doesn’t stop there.

It’s about how you want to be remembered.

How you want to move through the end of your life, on your own terms.

The space you get to leave for the people you love, so they can grieve in peace... instead of sleuthing through cupboards for a missing login while their hearts are breaking.

A practical act of love. And a tender one.

It couldn’t have come at a better time.

July was beautifully full.

Travelling across the world. Precious time with my parents. Coming home. Catching my breath.

A lot of emotion, connection — and very little routine.

Normally I’d tell myself I should be creating more.

Instead, the challenge invited me to soften.

To notice how I actually work, rather than how I think I should.

My creativity doesn’t thrive under pressure.

It needs spaciousness.

Tiny moments of rest.

Permission to stop forcing.

Looking back, none of those small moments were wasted.

Every act of self-compassion.

Every walk.

Every pause.

Every expectation I quietly set down.

And here’s the magic behind it, since we are on Day 29 now.

All those small seeds — the compassion, the rest, the letting go — meant that when the right conditions finally arrived, I was ready!

Four whole days to myself (thanks to my thoughtful husband!)

And the creativity poured ♥︎

I found myself creating a collection of interactive Edinburgh city guides—including a sensory guide for those of us who experience places deeply.

We host family and friends throughout the year, and I wanted to create something that would help people slow down, notice more, and experience the city with a little more joy.

I wasn’t creating because I had to.

And I think that’s the difference.

The more I practice gratitude, the more freely creativity seems to move.

Gratitude doesn’t conjure inspiration.

It simply helps me notice what’s already here.

Three weeks of full days and full rooms. And now, suddenly, spaciousness — nothing to do but think about them.

My family has always been spread across the world. It’s generational - my parents did it, I did it, and now my girls are doing it too.

I grew up bouncing between cities. The one fixed point was my grandma’s house in Los Angeles, every summer. It was our anchor.

I sobbed every single time we left.

This time leaving my parents feels different. Everyone is healthy. We all travel more easily now. I know I’ll see them again before too long - and that turns out to be the whole gift, because it means we got to do this work while it was still joyful rather than urgent.

I’ve just spent a few precious weeks with my parents. Alongside parenting, work, and the ordinary rhythm of family life, I spent much of the trip helping them declutter.

Together we accomplished far more than I imagined we would.

We sorted the office. We made decisions that had been waiting years for someone to sit down beside them. My mom passed on most of her jewelry. We created space throughout the house - the kind you can feel when you walk into a room.

The only thing we didn’t finish was the photographs.

Hundreds of albums. Boxes of prints. Memory discs. Digital files scattered across old devices.

Part of me wishes we’d had another few weeks.

Here’s what we never did

We never had a decluttering day.

Not one. No weekend cleared for the project, no trash bags lined up in the hallway, no dramatic before-and-after.

What we had instead was this:

One drawer with my dad after dinner.

One stack of small albums on a morning before his meeting.

Twenty minutes here. Half an hour there. Slotted into the ordinary shape of the day, between meals and errands and grandchildren.

That was the whole method. And it turned out to be the greatest gift of the trip - not because it was efficient, but because it was enjoyable. My dad looked forward to it. So did I.

And because that version is enormous, they wait. For a free weekend. For a quieter season. For a visit long enough to do it properly.

I want to gently take that requirement away from you.

There is no finishing. There is only starting, and what starting gives you.

What starting gave me

My dad had already done something quietly beautiful before I arrived. He’d gone through decades of photographs and made a small box of the ones that mattered most to him.

We sat together and looked through them, and he told me stories I had never heard.

We charged up an old digital camera that hadn’t been switched on in years. Image after image appeared on the screen, each one unlocking another memory.

Photographs aren’t paper or files. They’re invitations to remember.

How I dodged the photographs, on purpose

I want to be honest about something, because it’s the most useful thing I can give you today.

I did not walk my dad into the hardest photographs first.

Photographs aren’t one category. They’re two — and treating them as one is why so many people open a box, feel flooded, and quietly close it again.

Start with the low intensity. All of it, first.

Not because the others don’t matter, but because they matter so much that they deserve you at full strength - with time, with company, and with the confidence you’ll have built by then.

Before I left, I gave my dad his joy work.

I don’t call it homework. Nobody needs more homework at seventy-something. Joy work is the pile you’ve been given permission to enjoy: the easy tier, the low stakes, the ones where the only job is to notice what makes you smile.

The hard ones will wait. I’ll be back.

What we chose to keep

We’re keeping the old memory discs. The pro-organizer in me knows I’ll probably never look through every one if they eventually become mine. Years ago I might have insisted on reducing them.

Now I see it differently.

Swedish Death Cleaning was never about creating the smallest possible inheritance. It’s about helping someone make peace with what they’re leaving behind.

But on its own, it can tilt toward subtraction — a quiet accounting of what to remove so that nobody else has to.

That’s why I blend it with KonMari.

Both questions belong in the room.

Sometimes the answer is letting go. Sometimes it’s keeping something, because it still brings comfort, connection, or joy.

It’s never one-size-fits-all.

The most generous thing you can leave

One of the kindest gifts we can give our families isn’t perfectly organized belongings.

It’s permission.

That one sentence can spare the people we love from carrying guilt alongside our possessions.

My mom taught me something different.

She’s never been particularly sentimental. This trip she gave my sister and me most of her jewelry. What surprised me wasn’t that she was ready to part with it - it was that she didn’t know many of the stories behind the pieces either.

How many family stories quietly disappear because no one ever wrote them down?

Perhaps legacy isn’t in the object. Perhaps it’s in the story.

Those are the things that become treasures.

What their belongings actually told me

I learned more about my parents in three weeks of sorting than I had in years of visiting.

Their belongings tell the story of lives well lived. And what struck me was that the story wasn’t really about the successes or the achievements.

It was about the people. The ones who loved them, supported them, showed up for them, shaped the direction their lives took.

That’s what was in the drawers.

One small thing, this week

Don’t turn this into a project. Turn it into a single moment.

Choose one object — in your home, or in your parents’ home if you’re the one visiting. Then:

• Write, on a small card, why you kept it.

• Or ask the person who owns it one specific question about it, and listen to the whole answer.

• Or record a two-minute voice note telling its story. On your phone. Nothing fancy.

Or choose one drawer, and give it twenty minutes after dinner to digest.

That’s not a small thing. That’s the actual work, in its smallest true form.

Why I built the courses I did

Deciding to begin is one thing. Sitting alone in front of decades of photographs and papers is another entirely.

Sentimental belongings are the hardest category in any home. That’s why I created Joyful Legacy Decluttering — a live 3-week cohort, capped at ten, starting in August 18 & 19.

It’s decluttering with legacy depth, worked at exactly the pace described in this letter: small sessions, sorted by intensity, with company. We start where it’s light and build toward what’s heavy. You’ll leave with conversations started, stories captured, and a lighter heart rather than a longer to-do list.

Last week I turned 40.

As a reformed shopaholic, birthdays have changed a lot over the years.

In my family, we now rarely exchange gifts unless it’s something we truly need. More often, we choose experiences over possessions. And because we’re a family of food lovers, a delicious meal together is always one of our favorite gifts!

This year, my mom planned a staycation for us in Shanghai, and she and my sister gifted my daughters a three-week cultural day camp. It’s exactly the kind of gift our family loves - something that creates memories, gives us the gift of time, and doesn’t add to the clutter.

As I’ve celebrated this milestone birthday and spent time with my parents while writing my book on Joyful Legacy Decluttering, I’ve found myself thinking about gifts in a different way.

Because the greatest gift they’ve ever given me wasn’t wrapped in paper.

My mom is 70. My dad is 75.

People often ask me when someone should start thinking about legacy planning or preparing for the future.

Watching my parents, I realized something.

They didn’t wake up one day and decide to “finish” their legacy planning.

They simply started.

They normalized the conversations.

Sometimes we’ll chat over dinner about end-of-life wishes. Other times, we’ll bring up more complex topics - like assets or important documents - while we’re out for a walk. No single conversation has all the answers, and it doesn’t need to.

Each conversation brings a little more clarity.

Each decision lightens the mental load.

Each step makes the next one easier.

What makes this even more meaningful is that this wasn’t how my mom experienced it with her own parents.

Those conversations never happened.

So my parents made a different choice.

They created a culture where talking about death, planning ahead, and preparing for the future wasn’t morbid or taboo - it was simply part of caring for one another.

Because they did that for me, I now get to do the same for my own daughters.

That’s what legacy really is.

Not just what we leave behind.

But what we normalize.

One of the participants in my recent Joyful Legacy course reminded me of this beautifully.

She used the momentum from our practical sessions to finally have a conversation with her sister about her wishes.

She didn’t complete everything.

She didn’t have every document organized.

She simply started.

And that one conversation created momentum for everything that followed.

I think that’s where so many of us get stuck.

We believe we need a free weekend.

The perfect checklist.

More time.

More energy.

The motivation to tackle it all.

But the hardest part is almost never the decluttering.

It’s beginning.

It’s just after midnight in Shanghai.

The apartment is finally quiet.

My girls are asleep after another day of speaking Mandarin, navigating bustling streets, soaking up the beautiful sensory feast that is this city... and slowly finding their rhythm through the jet lag.

As June slipped into July, I’m reflecting on a month that somehow felt like several months packed into one.

A beautiful kind of exhaustion

We wrapped up another Joyful Legacy cohort.

Our eldest graduated from primary school - a whirlwind of celebrations, hugs, goodbyes, and all the emotions that come with one chapter closing and another beginning.

We immediately packed our bags and flew halfway around the world to spend precious time with family.

Every one of those moments sparked joy.

Yet somewhere among all that joy, I noticed something unexpected.

I was exhausted.

My nervous system had spent weeks regulating through milestone after milestone, holding both the excitement and the emotion each one brought.

As I sat quietly on the plane, I realized this wasn’t the kind of exhaustion that follows a difficult season.

It had arrived after one of the most beautiful months of the year.

I wonder…

That’s when I began wondering if we have language for this experience.

Joy has a way of expanding to fill every corner of our lives.

Celebrations, milestones, reunions, adventures, answered prayers - they’re all beautiful.

They also ask something of us. They invite us to adapt, absorb, and integrate.

As highly sensitive people, we often expect to need rest after life’s difficult seasons.

I’ve been wondering if we need just as much gentleness after the beautiful ones.

A wedding.

A long-awaited trip.

A new home.

A child’s graduation.

Even dreams coming true can leave us quietly longing for stillness.

I’ve started calling this overjoy - those seasons when life is overflowing with beautiful things, yet your nervous system is quietly begging for a little more time to catch up.

It isn’t the opposite of joy.

It’s what happens when joy arrives faster than we can fully receive it.

Our Homes Hold More Than Our Belongings

That thought keeps bringing me back to our homes.

Our homes become the place where memories settle. Where experiences are woven into everyday life. Where we pause long enough to appreciate what we’ve been given before reaching for what’s next.

My July Experiment

That’s why I’ve intentionally made July a quieter month.

I’m choosing slower mornings, family time, good coffee, and long conversations. I’m choosing to savor this season instead of racing into the next one.

Perhaps that’s one of the greatest gifts decluttering has given me.

Space to receive.

Space to notice.

Space to let beautiful moments become part of me.

Less chasing.

More savoring.

☕ Keep the Coffee Flowing

Today is the Summer Solstice - the longest day of the year.

I’ve always loved the symbolism of the solstice. Not because it marks the start of summer (although in Scotland we’re grateful for every extra minute of daylight 😂), but because it’s a natural pause point.

A chance to look up from the busyness of life and ask:

• What’s flourishing?

• What’s feeling complete?

• What do I want to carry with me into the second half of the year?

Yet if you’re anything like me, June can also feel surprisingly overwhelming.

End-of-school events. Concerts. Sports days. Travel. Celebrations. Long evenings. Full calendars.

In a recent conversation, we laughed that June can sometimes feel like December in disguise.

So much joy. So many good things. And still, somehow, too much.

For those of us with highly sensitive nervous systems, there can absolutely be such a thing as over-joy.

Not because the experiences themselves aren’t wonderful, but because our nervous systems are processing all of it at once.

Which is why I love a Summer Solstice decluttering ritual.

Not as another thing to add to the list, but as an opportunity to pause and create a little breathing room.

Because decluttering isn’t only about creating physical space.

It’s often how we ground ourselves and return to what matters most.

Start Small

No marathon tidying session required.

Choose one small area:

• Your bedside table

• Your current reading pile

• Your bag

• The kitchen countertop

• Your desk

• Your entryway

Ask yourself:

Does this support who I’m becoming?

This morning, I let go of a stack of old newspapers I’d been saving for future art projects.

They were still useful.

But they felt heavy.

Full of old headlines, old stories, toxic energy.

Sometimes we’re not letting go because something is wrong.

We’re simply making space for what comes next.

Sweep the Threshold

Many traditions mark the solstice with cleansing rituals.

Mine is far less glamorous!

It looks like clearing the entryway, shaking out the doormat, or finally running the hoover around the house.

There is something surprisingly grounding about caring for the spaces that welcome us home.

Once everything feels a little lighter, I light an incense and take a moment to pause.

A small act of gratitude for the place that holds us.

Release the Unnecessary Weight

Another simple solstice ritual is to fill one bag with things you’re ready to let go of.

(In fact, you may already have a donation bag sitting somewhere waiting to leave the house.)

No need to overthink it.

Just choose a few things whose chapter feels complete.

Thank them, and let them go.

Think of it less as decluttering and more as setting something down.

A reminder that you don’t have to carry that weight forward.

A Solstice Blessing

As the days slowly begin to shorten again, may this be a reminder:

Growth isn’t always about adding more.

Sometimes it’s about appreciating how far you’ve come.

Sometimes it’s about tending to what already matters.

And sometimes it’s as simple as creating a little mental and physical space by clearing a countertop, sweeping the doorstep, or gathering one donation bag.

It’s 3am as I write this.

The house is quiet. The girls are asleep. My husband is away.

I’ve always found writing helps me make sense of things, and over the last year Substack has quietly become a creative refuge. A place where I can set things down when they’re feeling too heavy to carry alone.

I almost didn’t write this.

PMDD can feel deeply isolating.

And yet if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that shame thrives in silence.

So here I am.

Writing in the dark.

Trying to make sense of yesterday.

Yesterday was one of those days.

The kind where a cozy family evening we’d all been looking forward to quickly unraveled and slipped through my fingers.

After a hard and very long week, I was looking forward to finally sitting down together. It was our only free evening of the week. No activities. No rushing. No logistics. Just me and the girls.

And then I snapped.

Instead of sitting down for dinner, I retreated to another room and started folding laundry.

The girls followed me.

“Mama, come back.”

They begged me to join them.

But I’d lost my appetite. I’d lost access to the evening I’d been looking forward to only moments before.

I didn’t want dinner.

I didn’t want conversation.

I didn’t want comfort.

I didn’t want to exist.

If you live with PMDD, you may know exactly what I mean.

Not necessarily as a plan or an action,

but as an overwhelming desire for relief from the intensity of it all.

The truth is, it wasn’t just dinner.

It was a week of carrying too much.

Solo parenting.

School transition week.

A fractured foot.

A husband away on a memorial trip.

An unexpected landlord visit.

The girls eventually finished their dinner quietly. I folded laundry. Together we finished tidying the house and later retreated to our rooms to read in bed.

Before sleep, we still shared our gratitude practice and prayers.

The evening hadn’t unfolded the way I’d hoped, but there was still connection.

And underneath it all sat the familiar ache of knowing the evening hadn’t unfolded the way I’d hoped.

The guilt simmering in the background.

The feeling that I wasn’t enough.

The feeling that my children deserved a better version of me.

When Your Brain Turns Against You

PMDD isn’t simply “feeling emotional” before your period.

For me, it can feel as though someone has temporarily replaced my inner narrator.

Everything feels heavier.

Small disappointments feel catastrophic.

Problems feel permanent.

Thoughts that would normally drift through my mind suddenly feel convincing.

The hardest part is that I know, intellectually, what’s happening.

I’ve lived with PMDD long enough to recognize the pattern.

And yet each month there can still be moments when it feels utterly real.

One of the reasons PMDD awareness matters so much is that many of us spend years believing these thoughts mean something about who we are.

When in reality, they are symptoms of a condition that can profoundly affect our emotions, thoughts, physical well-being, and perception of the world around us.

For some people, PMDD includes suicidal thoughts.1

It did for me.

What I’ve learned over the years is that those thoughts were never really about wanting my life to end.

They were about wanting relief from the intensity.

I’m Tired, But I Excel at Masking

One of the strange things about PMDD is how invisible it can be.

By most measures, I’m functioning.

I’m still parenting.

Still working.

Still answering messages.

Still remembering school forms, appointments, and the endless logistics of family life.

And yet from the outside, most people would have no idea how hard I’ve been working to hold myself together.

This time, I haven’t shared the full extent of it with my husband. He knows my cycle arrived early from the stress and is incredibly supportive, but while he’s away on a memorial trip honoring his best friend, I’ve found myself slipping into the familiar habit of carrying things quietly.

So I do what many sensitive women become very good at doing.

I mask.

I carry on.

I put everyone else's needs ahead of my own.

I’m tired, but I excel at masking.

The challenge is that masking can make us forget we’re struggling too.

We become so practiced at caring for everyone else that we miss the moment when we need care ourselves.

The Voice I’ve Been Practicing

One of the biggest misconceptions about healing is that the difficult thoughts disappear.

For me, they haven’t.

PMDD still arrives every month.

Some months more gently than others.

And when it does, it often feels like there are two voices inside me.

One voice says:

• You’re failing.

• You’ve ruined the evening.

• Everyone would be better off without you.

• Nothing will ever get easier.

The other voice reminds me:

• You’re exhausted.

• You’re in your luteal phase.

• You’ve felt this before.

• Eat something.

• Take a shower.

• Go to bed early.

• Tomorrow will look different.

That second voice wasn’t always there.

For many years, I carried a self-harm kit with me.

Not because I wanted to die.

Because I wanted relief.

I wanted the intensity to stop.

Back then, I didn’t have many tools.

Over the years, I’ve slowly built them:

• Therapy

• Mindfulness

• Movement

• Writing

• Faith

• Rest

• Self-compassion

This year I’ve even started timing therapy appointments around my luteal phase because I’ve learned that’s when I need support most.

When we couldn’t make it work this week, it was a reminder that I’ve spent years building a toolkit.

Why Our Homes Matter

And strangely enough, decluttering became one of those tools too.

Not because a tidy home cures PMDD.

It doesn’t.

But when my brain is overloaded, everything takes more effort.

Every pile becomes another unfinished task.

Every surface becomes another visual demand.

Every decision requires energy I don’t have.

When my brain is already carrying too much, clutter doesn’t feel neutral.

It feels personal.

As a highly sensitive person, PMDD often feels like sensitivity with the volume turned all the way up.

The clutter feels louder.

The emotions feel louder.

The inner critic feels louder.

When the nervous system is already struggling, our environment can either add to the noise or help soften it.

Over the years, I’ve intentionally created a home that supports me when I’m not at my best.

Not a perfect home.

Not a Pinterest home.

A supportive home.

• A home where I can find soft clothes without searching.

• A home where nourishing food is visible and accessible.

• A home where I can light a candle as a signal to pause.

• A home where there is space to retreat when I need sensory rest.

A home that requires a little less thinking when my brain is already working overtime.

My home has become an extension of that quieter voice.

A physical reminder of what I most need to remember when my brain is struggling to remember it for itself.

A Different Kind of Safety Plan

PMDD still visits every month.

Some months it whispers. Some months it roars.

But over the years I’ve learned that healing isn’t about getting rid of the difficult voice.

It’s about strengthening the compassionate one.

• The one that reminds me to eat dinner.

• The one that tells me to check my cycle app for tips.

• The one that lights the candle.

• The one that reaches for my daily supplement.

• The one that knows tomorrow will not feel exactly like today.

And perhaps that’s why I care so deeply about the spaces we live in.

Not because a tidy home can save us.

But because our homes can become physical reminders of that compassionate voice when we need to hear it most.

The will.

The passwords.

The paperwork.

The possessions.

The conversations they’ve been meaning to have.

What’s often missing isn’t information.

It’s capacity.

Yesterday, we began our first Joyful Legacy Decluttering session, and something beautiful happened.

People started tasks they had been putting off for months - sometimes years. Researching difficult decisions. Organizing important documents. Taking the first steps on projects that felt overwhelming when faced alone.

Not because they were pushed.

Not because they were shamed.

Not because someone convinced them to become more productive.

Because they were supported.

We created space for practical action, but also space to pause.

Space to breathe.

Space to notice what emotions arose.

Space to honour the fact that legacy decluttering is rarely just about possessions or paperwork.

It’s often grief work.

Identity work.

Relationship work.

It’s making peace with chapters that are ending while tending to the ones that remain.

So alongside the practical tasks, we spent time regulating our nervous systems. We shared stories. We celebrated small wins. We allowed ourselves to move at a pace that felt sustainable rather than urgent.

And perhaps that was the real lesson.

The nervous system isn’t the obstacle to this work.

It’s the guide.

When we learn to work with our energy instead of against it, when we replace shame with compassion, and urgency with intention, even the heaviest tasks become lighter.

Not because they disappear.

But because we’re no longer carrying them alone.

The world teaches us that meaningful progress comes from pushing harder.

My experience continues to show the opposite.

For sensitive people especially, meaningful progress often begins when we feel safe enough to take the next small but mighty step.

To my younger self, it seemed obvious.

Surely these beautiful bags should be carefully stored away and passed down to her daughters one day.

Instead, she sold and gave away many of them.

At the time, I didn’t understand.

Now I do.

My mum had watched her own mother hold onto a lifetime of possessions.

When her parents died, much of the responsibility for sorting through those belongings fell to her.

She knew firsthand the emotional and practical weight that can accompany grief.

And somewhere along the way, she made a different choice.

Not because she didn’t value beautiful things.

Not because she didn’t love us.

But because she loved us enough not to leave us carrying more than we needed to.

It took me years to recognize what a profound act of love that was.

Back then, I thought inheritance was about receiving things.

Now I understand it’s also about what we choose not to pass down.

My mom broke a cycle for her daughters.

I get to do the same for mine.

And now, through my work as a Master KonMari Consultant and End-of-Life Doula, I have the privilege of helping others do the same.

Six months after my father-in-law’s death, I’ve been reflecting deeply on what we leave behind.

Not just our belongings.

Our decisions.

Our unfinished business.

The things we’ve been meaning to get around to “one day.”

Increasingly, I’m seeing that legacy isn’t about death.

It’s about love.

It’s about reducing future burdens.

It’s about making life a little easier for the people who will one day walk through our belongings and our stories.

There are certain things I hope my daughters inherit from me.

• My love.

• My values.

• My stories.

• My curiosity.

• My sense of wonder.

• Perhaps a few treasured keepsakes.

But there are also things I hope they never have to deal with:

• Mystery passwords.

• Unfinished paperwork.

• Boxes of postponed decisions.

• Storage units.

• Guilt disguised as belongings.

• Broken things waiting to be fixed.

• Family stories that only exist in my head.

• Ambiguous wishes.

• And perhaps most of all, the belief that I’ll get around to it someday.

What’s interesting is that none of these things are really about clutter.

They’re about decisions.

Communication.

Relationships.

Love.

The deeper I go into this work, the less interested I become in perfectly organized drawers and beautifully folded clothing.

Those things can be wonderful.

But they’re not the point.

That, to me, is what legacy decluttering is really about.

Not preparing for death.

Preparing with love.

My mom showed me that long before I had words for it.

And now, every time I help a client decide what to keep, what to share, what to release, or what story to preserve, I see that same act of love unfolding again.

One generation at a time.

And one day, in the middle of grief, burnout, menopause, parenting, caregiving, or sheer exhaustion - someone is left holding not only the belongings, but the emotional weight attached to them too.

I see this all the time in my work.

Not because people are lazy.
Not because they don’t care.

But because modern life has left so many of us overwhelmed, emotionally maxed out, and quietly postponing the things that feel hardest to face.

And belongings hold stories.

Identity.
Guilt.
Dreams.
Grief.
Versions of ourselves we haven’t fully let go of yet.

That’s why legacy decluttering is never really just about “getting organized.”

It’s about creating ease.
Space.
Clarity.
Breathing room.

Not only for the people we love one day - but for ourselves, now.

A few years ago, after navigating postpartum depression, PMDD, burnout, and major life transitions, I realized this work wasn’t superficial at all.

Our homes impact our nervous systems.

The visual noise.
The postponed decisions.
The constant low-level friction.

Over time, it shapes how we feel in our bodies.

And slowly, gently, I began creating systems, rituals, and spaces that supported healing instead of survival mode.

That journey eventually became part of my Joyful Legacy work — blending the KonMari Method® and Swedish Death Cleaning philosophies into nervous-system-aware decluttering, and my training as an End-of-Life Doula.

Because I truly believe this work is about so much more than stuff.

It’s about how we want to live.
And what we want to leave behind.

And that was that. The streak, the habit, the quiet ritual she’d built - gone. Not because she stopped caring. Because the environment failed one small but critical test.

A pen.

That’s how thin the margin is between a habit that holds and one that quietly dissolves.

We tend to blame ourselves for these moments.

The discipline we couldn’t sustain. The motivation that ran out. The version of ourselves we almost became, but didn’t quite.

But what if it was never about discipline?

What if the environment was simply working against you?

Here’s what I’ve come to understand after years of working with sensitive, deeply intentional people:

Clutter isn’t just visual.

It’s the low-grade hum of unfinished decisions. The cupboard that won’t quite close. The pile that’s been in the corner long enough that you’ve stopped seeing it - but your nervous system hasn’t.

After a long day, you come home looking for rest.

Instead, your eyes land on the washing up. The unopened letters. The surfaces that never quite got cleared.

Before you’ve even sat down, your body is already scanning - processing, registering, quietly bracing.

That dysregulation has to go somewhere.

Sometimes it becomes an extra episode. A mindless scroll. A purchase you didn’t plan. Snapping at someone you love over something small.

Not weakness. Not failure.

A nervous system doing its best in an environment that isn’t fully supporting it.

But here’s the other side of that - the part I find quietly radical:

When your environment works for you, everything shifts.

Not perfectly. Not all at once.

Challenges are still part of life. The hard days still come.

But when your space is set up to support you, you have more of yourself available to meet them.

My husband does laundry to regulate between calls.

I wash dishes as a screen break, a way of coming back into my body after too long at a desk.

Maintenance, in our home, isn’t separate from our wellbeing.

It is part of it.

That’s what’s possible when your environment stops working against you and starts working with you. The ordinary rhythms of home become anchors. Small acts of care become a way of returning to yourself.

This doesn’t require an overhaul.

It starts with one friction removed.

One pen, always where it should be.

One surface cleared so the yoga mat can finally unroll.

One small thing that makes the next right action just a little easier.

That’s where the life you keep meaning to live begins to become possible.

I came across a comment in an online group recently that stopped me mid-scroll.

I began legacy decluttering when I was 32 years old.

My children were still toddlers. I was navigating postpartum depression layered on top of existing PMDD, and there were days my mind spiralled into very dark places.

At the same time, my parents quietly inspired me. They had always approached life with care and thoughtfulness - keeping their affairs organized, making things easier for the people they loved.

And strangely… thinking about dying well became one of the things that helped me keep living.

This is not medical advice - only my personal experience - but every time my thoughts spiralled, I would gently remind myself:

I can’t go yet.

There are people I love.
Things I want to leave behind.
A life I still want to participate in.

So I began with small, tender acts of care.

Organizing paperwork.
Letting go of clutter.
Writing things down.
Creating systems.
Making life softer for the people I love.

What started as survival slowly became purpose.

Last year, for my 39th birthday, I gifted myself end-of-life doula training to deepen this work even further - not from morbidity, but from a desire to meet life, loss, and legacy with greater presence, tenderness, and care.

Over the years, I’ve come to see legacy decluttering not as something reserved for the elderly, but as a compassionate practice for any stage of life. Anything can happen - as many of us were reminded recently with the heartbreaking passing of our dear friend at the prime of his life.

This is why I now teach using a blend of the KonMari Method and Swedish Death Cleaning philosophies.

Not from fear.
But from love.

An act of coming home to yourself.
