Sometimes the haunting is obvious. An object arrives carrying a violent history, a ritual function, or the lingering of a former owner whose presence seems to cling to its surface. Other times the feeling is harder to name. You stand in front of something behind glass and sense that it has survived more than its label can hold. Walter Benjamin gives us one language for this sensation: the aura. The object carries the weight of its singular existence, a history that exceeds whatever information the museum can place beside it.

Museums are filled with things removed from their original worlds. Their meanings travel with them imperfectly. An object once touched, worn, buried, invoked, feared, or protected can become cataloged beneath fluorescent light. The institution gives it a number. A conservator stabilizes its surface. A curator writes paragraphs and works to contextualize.

It’s undergrad, and I’m at my work-study job at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. I’m an art student, exploring different mediums, and focused on contemporary art history, specifically new media works. I’m still figuring it out and can’t decide on a hair color, so I keep shifting between pinks, blues, and greens. I’m asked if I’ll become an art teacher and scoff. I will be a famous artist one day, not some babysitter. Boldly, I say just as much.

I’ve always felt a presence in this statue. There’s no verifiable methodology to confirm, and it’s a personal impression. Still, the feeling matters to me. Standing before Lady Sennuwy, I become aware of the distance between what an institution can document and what an object can provoke.

Her material history is extraordinary in its own right. Carved from granodiorite in Egypt during the second millennium BCE, the statue traveled south into Kush in antiquity, where it was eventually placed within the burial complex of a local ruler. Centuries underground left the stone riddled with cracks and fissures caused by weathering and the oxidation of iron-rich minerals. [1] The marks remain embedded in the sculpture's body. Its surface carries evidence of where it has been.

That history continued inside the museum. During the 1970s, fragments of the stone shifted while Lady Sennuwy stood on display, likely in response to vibrations from street traffic. Conservators later stabilized the sculpture and engineered a steel support capable of carrying its nearly 2,400-pound weight. [1] The city had begun acting upon the object too.

The MFA also consciously shapes the conditions through which we encounter her. Exhibition designer Chelsea Garunay describes the gallery as a threshold, using architecture and controlled lighting to concentrate attention around the sculpture. She writes of Lady Sennuwy’s aura traveling across millennia to reach the contemporary viewer. [2] Benjamin’s language finds an unexpected echo inside the institution itself.

Presence becomes something negotiated between object and viewer. The stone carries its own duration into the room. Yet, we may only spend a few minutes with such a storied statue. Isn’t it funny how the sheer volume of objects to look at in museums often collapses their tremendous age?

Walking the galleries, I turn to another object with such presence.

Alert

I walk, and she is positioned above me, crouched and foreboding. Kiki Smith’s Lilith clings to the wall, her bronze body compressed into a posture that feels ready to spring. I have to tilt my head upward to try and meet her gaze. She looks out and beyond, at something I cannot see. The glass eyes catch the light with an uncanny lucidity, fixing the viewer from a place beyond ordinary human scale.

Her placement changes the entire encounter. Sculpture usually asks us to move around it at eye level. Lilith occupies the architecture itself. She watches from above, collapsing the comfortable distance between object and observer. The body feels alert, almost animal in its readiness.

I remember feeling as though I was being followed. Smith gives the sculpture the power of the encounter. Lilith controls the gaze from above, while the viewer becomes the one that is hunted. The usual museum dynamic shifts; she dictates the terms of looking. Smith gives Lilith the power of the gaze. Dante Gabriel Rossetti, painting more than a century earlier, gives us a very different woman.

In Lady Lilith (1866–68, altered 1872–73), Lilith sits before a mirror, combing her long red hair. The room closes around her in flowers and fabric, while her attention remains fixed upon her own reflection. Rossetti draws the viewer into an intimate interior where beauty becomes almost architectural, enclosing the figure within its own luxuriance.

Rossetti also paired the painting with a sonnet that casts Lilith as a dangerous enchantress whose beauty entangles those who encounter her. The image belongs firmly to the nineteenth-century femme-fatale tradition: Lilith’s autonomy is translated into seduction, and her self-regard becomes part of the threat she poses.

The mirror is what interests me most. Lilith looks at herself while we look at her. Her gaze turns inward, yet the painting still positions her body for ours. Smith reverses that arrangement completely. Her Lilith looks back.

Rossetti contains Lilith within the mirror's intimate, private space. Anselm Kiefer releases her into the landscape.

Kiefer began his Lilith series after photographing São Paulo from above during his 1987 visit. In Lilith (1987–90), the metropolis spreads across an enormous canvas, its towers submerged beneath dense layers of ash, clay, lead, and pigment. The aerial perspective makes the city appear unstable, hovering somewhere between construction and ruin. [3]

Lilith herself barely appears. Strands of human hair drift across the surface, allowing the body to survive as a trace. Kiefer transforms her from a figure into an atmosphere. She inhabits the city as a presence embedded within its material, dispersed through architecture and debris.

The scale overwhelms the viewer. São Paulo becomes a psychic landscape where myth enters contemporary urban space. Lilith has moved beyond the enclosed room of Rossetti’s painting. Here, exile expands until it becomes geography. Lilith no longer occupies a room or a body. She hangs over the city like memory.

The Dark Moon

In astrology, Black Moon Lilith marks the Moon’s apogee, the point in its orbit farthest from Earth. Lilith becomes distance. Modern astrology reads this point through autonomy and refusal. Its placement in a chart can reveal where instinct resists containment. The symbolism fits her history. The figure who leaves becomes the point of greatest separation. An orbit stretches outward, and Lilith reaches its edge.

Sight Line

What does it mean to reclaim your story?

Lilith has spent centuries inside other people’s interpretations. Her image has shifted with each retelling, carrying the fears and desires of the culture that shaped her. Reclamation begins when the story returns to the person living it. Agency is the right to name your own experience. It is the freedom to decide what stays with you when you leave. Lilith endures because she keeps moving beyond the frame. The door opens. This time, you choose the story that follows you through.

The screen has become so embedded in daily life that its presence can all but disappear, even when we stare directly at it. I wake and check the time on one. I work inside one. I speak to the people I love through one. Images arrive, multiply, and dissolve within one. I start to wonder whether I'm looking at it or whether I've begun seeing through the looking glass. I think a lot about how technology impacts us. How it shapes our perceptions, experiences, and relationships. I’ve been exploring this central theme most avidly since 2019, but I think it’s fair to say the topic has interested me for over a decade. I think a lot about how our devices mediate and mitigate; how tech has this unseen influence over us.

This interest has culminated in a project that I’ve titled Mirror Fade. Here, the screen is seen as an extension of the self—a membrane stretched between interior and exterior worlds. Images passed across it, but so did desire, memory, fantasy, recognition. The digital image was becoming strangely bodily. I began scouring the internet for fragments. Bodies, interfaces, advertisements, artworks, anime, technological artifacts, the visual debris that accumulates through hours spent online.

In Photoshop, these fragments became files hundreds of layers deep. I brushed them apart. I buried images beneath other ideas. A hand became architecture. A face dissolved beneath an interface. Figures surfaced and disappeared inside fields of cyan.

Collage gave me a language for the experience of the screen because the screen itself is already a collage. Windows overlap. Histories remain underneath other tabs. Images arrive carrying traces of the places they have traveled through before reaching us. Everything can be copied, enlarged, compressed, circulated, forgotten, and then found again.

THE BLUE LIGHT

I use a lot of cyan in my work. To me it is the color that feels the most in tune with the internet. Besides this technological color - with its reference to cold fluorescence or a blue light cast at night - this color also reminds me of water. Of the ocean, and its depths that house technological infrastructures of internet cables and servers. Ironic that our species originated from the ocean, and with the climate crisis we steadily seep back into it. But our lives, through our devices, are abstractly already underwater.

That ambiguity became important to me.

The digital world is often described as immaterial, yet our experience of it passes constantly through the body. We hunch toward screens. Our pupils contract and dilate. Our fingers learn small choreographies of typing and swiping. A message can change the rhythm of the heart. A meme can remain lodged in memory for years. In Mirror Fade, cyan became the atmosphere where these conditions could coexist. The screen became oceanic, something immersive enough to enter. Bodies drift through it. Images sink into one another. Some remain visible near the surface while others become sediment. The screen impacts us without ever touching us back.

THE MIRROR

I think of Sylvia Plath’s poem, “I am silver and exact.” The mirror fascinates me. Across folklore, magic,k and ritual, reflective surfaces have been treated as thresholds and instruments of divination. The mirror offers an encounter with an image that appears present and remains impossible to touch. The black screen of a device at rest aptly resembles one. Over years of living through screens, we have poured pieces of ourselves into them: photographs, search histories, conversations, playlists, purchases, locations, drafts abandoned before they were sent. Each gesture becomes another fragment in an immense distributed image of the self. Mirror Fade lives inside that transformation, where reflection gives way to transmission.

Overall

We carry the screen against the body and leave traces of ourselves inside it; increasingly, something on the other side answers back. I continue making these images because I want to understand that threshold while it is still changing beneath us. Each collage becomes a record of the encounter, hundreds of fragments pressed into a single surface, reflecting a self already entangled with the image.

It lingers, gripping at your clothes. The cicadas buzz, and I walk with disdain toward the sun beating down at me. Muggy doesn’t even begin to encapsulate it. I walk in the summer oppression of D.C. to my first museum studies seminar. I can’t help but think of oracles. I can see the heat rising from the pavement. I think of the fissures of Delphi.

The city seems happy to encourage the association. Columns rise everywhere in Washington, remnants of an architectural language inherited from Greek temples and revived to give modern institutions the gravitas of antiquity. I walk toward a lecture devoted to interpreting objects while thinking about an ancient sanctuary devoted to interpreting signs. I wonder what difference there is between research and divination when both seek answers.

The Voice

For years, I had imagined the Pythia as a figure unto herself. The Oracle of Delphi. A woman suspended somewhere between priestess and prophet, seated above the earth and listening. I knew the smoke. I knew the image that has survived through paintings and popular imagination.

Somehow, I had missed Apollo. Curious how gaps like that occur.

Pythia was the title given to the successive women who served as Apollo’s priestess at Delphi. The sanctuary belonged to him, and the prophecies delivered there carried his divine authority. Petitioners traveled to Delphi seeking Apollo’s counsel, yet when they reached the center of his sanctuary, they encountered a woman. His voice entered the world through hers. [1]

That relationship becomes stranger when we follow Delphi’s mythology backward.

In the opening of Aeschylus’s Eumenides, the Pythia remembers Gaia as the first prophetic power at Delphi. Themis inherits the oracle from her. Phoebe follows, eventually passing the prophetic seat to Apollo. [2] The lineage places female divinity at the beginning of Delphi’s voice. Apollo enters an ancient current and carries it forward through an institution.

The arrangement fascinates me. A god presides over prophecy. A temple rises in his honor. But the person who sits at the center of the system, receiving the questions of those who have crossed the ancient world to reach her, is the Pythia.

Apollo’s authority passes through her body.

This makes the Pythia difficult to separate from the process surrounding her. She occupied an office held by successive women across centuries. She sat upon Apollo’s sacred tripod and delivered the words attributed to the god. [3] Her identity became bound to the function she performed until the title itself eclipsed the individual women who carried it forward.

Older accounts of Delphi have sometimes imagined the Pythia falling into incoherent frenzy while male attendants shaped her sounds into intelligible prophecy. Modern scholarship has challenged that picture, drawing attention back toward the Pythia as an active participant in oracular speech and questioning assumptions that minimized her capacity. [4]

I find myself returning to the body at the center of all this.

Prophecy at Delphi depended upon transmission. Apollo supplied divine sovereignty; however, revelation still required a human voice for this to become audible. An ancient relay.

The Priestess

Smoke gently wafts from a crack in the ground, curling around the bronze stool before dissolving into darkness. Above it sits the Pythia, caught in the moment of revelation. One hand holds sacred laurel while her gaze turns downward beyond the picture plane.

In John Collier’s Priestess of Delphi (1891), the surrounding temple nearly disappears. Light isolates the priestess against a dark field, turning her body into the composition's central axis. The fissure opens beneath her while the smoke rises upward, making prophecy appear almost physically transmitted from her body.

Collier’s Pythia belongs as much to the nineteenth-century imagination as to ancient Delphi. He removes the institutional setting and leaves us with trance and subdued mystery. The priestess becomes the interface itself, suspended between what remains hidden and what can be spoken.

Camillo Miola’s The Oracle (1880) widens the frame. The Pythia sits upon the sacred tripod within a carefully staged temple interior, surrounded by bright architecture. To the left rests the omphalos, the stone understood as the center of the world, while an inscription at the right invokes Apollo’s claim to Delphi. [5]

Miola renders antiquity with archaeological precision, filling the canvas with costume and detail to make the ancient sanctuary feel tangible. Unlike Collier’s solitary figure suspended in trance, Miola returns prophecy to a system. The oracle exists within ceremony and collective belief. The Pythia remains the point through which revelation passes, but here we can see the larger structure holding her voice.

The Answer

The air is still hot when I leave class.

D.C. shimmers around me, the pavement softening at the edges beneath the afternoon sun. I think again of Delphi, of the long climb toward the sanctuary and the people who carried their questions there. Somewhere at the center of it all, a woman listened.

The oracle offered language to uncertainty. Its meaning continued beyond the temple, carried into decisions and memory by the person who received it. Revelation required participation. A message could enter the world through the Pythia; its life began again in the listener.

The future waits for interpretation.

Now it’s replaced with upstairs neighbors stomping. I never saw that dog, but I find myself missing it. I always wondered where he was. He wasn’t right next door but clearly not far off in the distance either. What kind of breed was he; did he have some name that signaled esteemed lineage, or was he mixed up inside? If he was like me, he’d be a bit of both. Inherited name, known Swedish origin but unknowns around an adoptive grandparent on an estranged, proclaimed Irish side. But that’s a story for another time.

Even as I write this, my Grammarly is insisting on revising on the fly. I’ve been working to write like I did when I was a kid; without a care, and often. I think to myself, this isn’t the same brain. How could it be? Though I believe more in the mundane beauty of life’s everyday magick than I did back then. My dad used to tell me I had my head in the clouds. He even suggested I stop reading so many books. He’s never understood me, not really, though we can finish one another’s sentences in that water sign way. Do you know how irritating that is?

It’s Bushwick and the cross streets around me are their own threshold moments. I give to them magickal workings that I no longer have use for. I offer them to Hekate. Well, it’s more like I give them up to her to take them where they need to go. I walk back to my apartment but take a different route, meandering through blocks unfamiliar. They’re so close to me, and yet I usually do not see them; creature of habit and all that. Cities are funny like that. Constantly surrounded by people, despite an encroaching gnaw of isolation that itches at the periphery.

The Crossroads

It feels facetious to say I work with a divine being like they’re some colleague. Many have commented on this. There’s much that remains mysterious in this world. I wouldn’t claim worship when there is an absence of devotional practice. I wouldn’t claim to understand worlds other than the one I embody either. But there is awareness and respect. I almost didn’t write about the goddess at all. Feeling like it wasn’t my place. But she’s not someone I can ignore. Not her. And not now. Maybe you have felt it too. But this plane is shifting. The splinters at the edges branch. Moonlight hugs the bend. There’s no convenient list of directions or bird’s-eye view map to follow. We only have our instinct.

The Torchbearer

In Hesiod’s Theogony, Hekate receives one of the poem’s most expansive hymns devoted to any deity. [1] Her authority stretches from thrones to shorelines, reaching out to even the humble shepherd who tends the field. After the Titans’ fall, Zeus leaves her powers and honors intact, thus securing her place within the new Olympian order. She is called upon across civic life and daily labor, her favor shaping victory and abundance alike.

But I know her as the one who presides over witchcraft. The goddess who waits where veils thin and intuition heightens.

Among the earliest surviving depictions, Hekate appears carrying twin torches. She stands composed, offering illumination to the path ahead.

Persephone, kneeling at the left, rises through a rocky opening in the earth. Her ascent is made apparent as the ground parts beneath her, with Hades below opening into the world of the living above. Hermes stands nearby carrying his kerykeion; he is the navigator of these roads between realms. Hekate raises her torches toward the crossing, while Demeter waits behind her to receive her daughter.

In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Hekate is one of the few divine beings who hears Persephone’s cry from beneath the earth. [2] She later approaches Demeter with a torch and joins the search for her missing daughter. Once Persephone returns, Hekate becomes her companion. The vase gathers these roles into a single image: the listener becomes the guide, carrying knowledge from the edge of what could be seen.

The torch becomes a form of orientation. Its flame marks the passage and holds open the possibility of return. Hekate illuminates enough of the crossing for Persephone to emerge, allowing the path to reveal itself.

Persephone’s ascent belongs to a cycle. She will descend again, and the earth will answer her absence with harvest returning to ground. Hekate occupies the cusp where descent turns toward emergence, accompanying the moment when a figure concealed beneath shadows becomes visible once more.

The Hekataion

By the late fifth century BCE, the image that would become Hekate’s enduring sculptural form had begun to emerge. The ancient writer Pausanias credited the Athenian sculptor Alkamenes with joining three images of the goddess into a single figure. [3] Known as Hekate Epipyrgidia, or Hekate “On the Tower,” the statue stood beside the temple of Athena Nike at the entrance to the Acropolis. Later Greek and Roman artists preserved the form through Hekataia, sculptures that gathered Hekate’s bodies around a central pillar.

The marble flows, allowing the eye to follow its movement. The sculpture unfolds gradually, asking the viewer to circle its form until orientation becomes part of the experience itself. We shift our gaze.

Soft lines descend through the peploi, their rhythm quoting from one figure to the next. Delicate shifts of weight lend the marble a faint vitality, while the central pillar gathers every direction into a single point. The composition feels balanced between motion and repose, holding the promise of every path at once.

Later Roman versions preserve the triple-bodied arrangement while changing its scale and sculptural rhythm. Some figures draw closely around the pillar, their bodies merging with its surface. Others extend outward. The sculptural type remains recognizable across these variations.

The Hekataion offers an encounter with orientation itself. As the body turns around the marble, perception shifts with it. The multiple views were said to ward off evil. She is a goddess of protection after all. Hekate lingers where every direction begins and ends.
