As I read and reread “I Am That” again and again, the nondual text of Nisargadatta Maharaj, one of the greatest spiritual texts that exist, I am struck by the beauty, precision and depth of the English translation and editing, which is the extraordinary work of Maurice Frydman, an inspired sage. I was amazed to find that this lifelong companion of Nisargadatta Maharaj, was born in the ghetto of Krakow, Poland in 1901, and grew up in a Yeshiva as a brilliant Jewish Talmudic scholar. His teachers suggested that he go to Europe to study electrical engineering, which he did at the Sorbonne. In France he worked at an electrical engineering factory. But he also showed a fierce intelligence and had some intense times and debates with Krishnamurti, that primed his interest in non-dogmatic and open spirituality. During this time, he was invited by the chief officer of the Indian State of Mysore, which had just been connected to electricity, to run the Mysore State factory making electrical equipment and he moved to Bangalore in 1935.

Captivated by Indian spirituality, he became an Indian Sanyasi, a renounced saddhu, and changed his name to Bharatananda. Though being the general manager of a large factory with hundreds of employees, he wore saffron robes, gave all his salary to the poor, and slept on the floor at the entrance to the factory. Only when important visitors would arrive at the factory would he agree to wear a suit. He became captivated by the ultimate teachings of Indian Advaita, non-duality, and became utterly devoted to Ramana Maharshi for years, and then to Nisargadatta Maharaj for whom he became a constant companion, devotee and translator, as he could speak 15 languages perfectly, including Marathi.

He lived for years at Mahatma Ghandi’s ashram, becoming one of the great thinkers of the Ghandian movement and developing a deep personal connection with Ghandi. As an engineer, the iconic spinning wheel, the symbol of the Ghandi movement, was designed and made by him, along with a variety of simple tools for self-sufficiency. Yet for 3 years he lived and slept on a mat under an acacia tree in the ashram.

Maurice was constantly engaged in social projects all through India. But one of his greatest achievements was helping the Tibetan Buddhist refugees streaming across the Himalayas. Maurice was instrumental in planning the escape of the Dalai Lama. The Tibetans had nowhere to go in India and struggled to live in the Indian cities. So one day Maurice went to Delhi and sat and slept outside prime minister Nehru’s office for 3 days until Nehru agreed to a meeting with him. He said the Nehru that the refugees could manage well if given just uninhabited mountain tops somewhere. Nehru consented, issued a letter, and that was the origin of Dharmsala and other Tibetan villages and settlements. Maurice also managed to save a vast trove of Tibetan Buddhist manuscripts which are an invaluable resource until today.

At a time when the world needs us more than ever, when we all need to develop inner qualities, steadiness, determination and a tireless and vast compassionate heart, it is good to have some models to inspire us. This is how Apa Pant, an Indian diplomat and prince, described Maurice: ‘’His intelligence was overpowering; his simplicity scintillating; his spontaneous, genuine love overwhelming. There was nothing false, superficial or superfluous about Maurice. His response to his environment was always razor-sharp and instantaneous, always compassionate. There was never a gap between what he saw and felt and his immediate action.’’

Can someone make a film about this extraordinary man?

We ripen when we refuse to drift, when striving ceaselessly becomes a way of life, when dispassion born of insight becomes spontaneous. When the search ‘Who Am I?’ becomes the only thing that matters….. One of the most dramatic teachings of the Buddha is the fire sermon which is the third discourse he gave after awakening, to 1000 ascetics who used to worship fire. In this Adittapariyaya sutta, the Buddha exclaimed that everything is burning. We are burning up with our constant neediness. Our senses are burning, our minds are burning, our connection with the world is on fire - the fires of neediness, of aversion and of ignorance. What a prophetic speech. We are burning up ourselves and this precious planet, our home, with our uncontrollable need to have whatever we want, to consume and use up resources endlessly, to wreck nature, to kill off life forms, all with the ignorance that somehow we can keep going like that, even though we see the world burning around us. As the forests burn, deserts are created in some places and floods in others, the ice caps melt and some cities become almost unliveable in, in the summers, we are reminded of the prophecy of the biologist James Lovelock in 1972 in which he said that if we continue to overconsume, the world will heat up and shake us off just like when we have a fever in order to shake off an invading virus or bacteria.

Nirvana (Sanskrit) or Nibbana (Pali) is the radical opposite. Its meaning is cooling or extinguishing, putting out the fires of restless neediness, aversion and delusion that keep us burning up. It is the end of suffering and misery. Buddhist practice is a powerful way towards living like this. We can stop the headlong rush towards destructive living, see directly the pain of our struggle, see the attachments that drive it, and gradually dissolve them. At the same time we feed those aspects of our mind, heart, and life that are harmonious, beneficial and joyful to ourselves and to this planet. When there is no more fuel, the fire goes out. This is an inner work. But the Buddha did guide his followers to live a life of minimum profile and neediness. They were only allowed 4 basic necessities or requisites: robes, usually made of cast-off clothing, food collected in a bowl, some form of shelter or shade, and medicines. The bowl is symbolic. Whatever the villagers put in it was seen as good enough. The monks did not pick and choose, or request anything further or better. Our minds can be like the monks’ bowl – whatever comes in is good enough. We do not need to constantly require ever more and better content.

How do we do this? We have to be close to the heat to know it. How close can we get? We can have the courage and insight through spiritual practice and inquiry, to see our restlessness, our habits of endlessly consuming, our sense of lack, and our search for deep peace which sometimes seems so far away. And when we do this, new possibilities open up. Hints and memories and passing experiences of harmony and balance appear which feel cool and complete, and do not lack anything, like the moments of a baby at the breast in which a deep quiet wraps the mother and baby in a stillness of giving and receiving. We may go on retreat, come back home to ourselves, live simply, meditate and dive into the moment. We can also discover that the retreat is a permission to rediscover and uncover a deep silence that was already part of us but overlooked. We can get close to the fire to know we are bigger than it, and know that we can live with the wisdom of balance between our inner and outer world. This cools us down. We will sense the cool breeze of Nirvana.

Dharma practice will inevitably reduce the gap between us and the world, as we consciously breathe the breath of life, walk between the trees who talk to us and on this earth that holds us. From that place we are bound to act and offer ourselves where we can to support this struggling world. We may feel that there is nothing that we can do to make a difference. It is all too big for us, and small actions, such as recycling and ecological living cannot make a difference. But that isn’t the attitude that the earth needs from us. It needs us to love this beautiful living planet and all the magical beings, including ourselves, that are its children. Then the actions, small or big, will emerge naturally as caring for all life including ourselves.

I have been involved in ecological activism of one kind or another for at least 50 years since India in 1975 when I was taken by the concept of Sattva, the Sanskrit word for harmony, purity, and truth. Meditation, in which the mind and heart flow with everything around, and caring for the world, seemed to come from the same place. I understood that dharma is not a personal project, and meditation is about connectedness. When I arrived in Israel, I joined a group of families that founded Clil as a community that is based on ecology, self-sufficiency, low profile living and peace, as taught by Mahatma Ghandi. We went all the way. In the first 5 years of my life in Clil we lived with our 3 young children in a rough wooden cabin without any electricity at all. And it was a time of magical richness and engagement with the world around. We watched the swallows coming from Africa and building their unbelievably beautiful gravel nests stuck to the ceiling of our toolshed, and the way a chameleon would change its colour as it slowly waddled down from the carob tree. Clil is now an ecological village with 1000 people. It was an experiment that worked. But actually, everything we do goes out in the world and makes change, small or big. It is not in our hands. We cannot measure anything, we can just donate our gifts and insights to the world and let karma do the rest.

אחת הדרשות הדרמטיות ביותר של הבודהה היא “דרשת האש”, הדרשה השלישית שנשא לאחר ההתעוררות, בפני אלף סגפנים שנהגו לעבוד את האש. בסוטתAdittapariyaya הבודהה הכריז שהכול בוער. אנחנו בוערים מתוך ההשתוקקות המתמדת שלנו. החושים שלנו בוערים, התודעה שלנו בוערת, הקשר שלנו עם העולם עולה באש – באש ההשתוקקות, הסלידה והבורות.

זוהי עבודה פנימית, אך היא אינה נשארת רק בתודעה. הבודהה גם הנחה את תלמידיו לחיות חיים של טביעת רגל מזערית ושל מעט צרכים. הותרו להם רק ארבעה צרכים בסיסיים: לבישת גלימות, בדרך כלל מבדים שנזרקו; אכילת מזון שנאסף בקערה; שימוש במחסה כלשהו או צל; ותרופות. קערת הנזיר היא סמלית. כל מה שהכפריים הניחו בה נחשב מספיק טוב. הנזירים לא בחרו, לא העדיפו, ולא ביקשו דבר נוסף או טוב יותר. ואכן התודעה שלנו יכולה להיות כמו קערת הנזיר – כל מה שנכנס בה הוא מספיק טוב. היא מסמלת את התפיסה לפיה איננו צריכים לדרוש בלי הרף עוד ועוד, ותמיד משהו טוב יותר.

איך עושים זאת? עלינו להתקרב אל האש כדי להכיר אותו מקרוב ובאופן ישיר. עד כמה קרוב נוכל להתקרב? באמצעות תרגול רוחני וחקירה, נוכל למצוא את האומץ ואת התובנה לראות את חוסר המנוחה שלנו, את הרגלי הצריכה הבלתי פוסקת, את תחושת החסר, ואת החיפוש שלנו אחר שלווה עמוקה, שלעתים נדמית רחוקה כל כך. וכשאנו עושים זאת, אפשרויות חדשות נפתחות. רמזים, זיכרונות וחוויות חולפות של הרמוניה ואיזון מופיעים. חוויות שמרגישות קרירות ושלמות, שאינן חסרות דבר; כמו הרגעים שבהם תינוק יונק משד אמו ושקט עמוק עוטף את האם ואת התינוק בדממה של נתינה וקבלה. באפשרותנו לצאת לריטריט, עם כוונה לשוב הביתה אל עצמנו, לחיות בפשטות, למדוט ולצלול אל תוך הרגע. ייתכן שגם נגלה שהריטריט הוא בעצם רשות לגלות מחדש ולחשוף שקט עמוק שכבר היה חלק מאיתנו, אך נשכח או הוחמץ. אנו יכולים להתקרב אל האש כדי לדעת שאנו גדולים ממנה, ולדעת שאפשר לחיות מתוך חוכמת האיזון בין עולמנו הפנימי לבין העולם החיצוני. העבודה הפנימית הזו עשויה “לקרר” אותנו. כך שנוכל לחוש את הרוח הקרירה של הנירוונה.

תרגול הדהרמה עשוי להפחית את הפער בינינו לבין העולם, כאשר אנו נושמים במודע את נשימת החיים, הולכים בין העצים המדברים אלינו ועל פני האדמה שמחזיקה אותנו. מהמקום הזה, אנו נקראים לפעול ולהציע את עצמנו היכן שנוכל, כדי לתמוך בעולם הנאבק הזה. לפעמים נדמה שאין דבר שנוכל לעשות שישנה באמת. הכול גדול מדי עבורנו, ופעולות קטנות, כמו מִחזור או חיים אקולוגיים, אינן יכולות לחולל שינוי. אבל האדמה זקוקה מאיתנו למשהו אחר. היא זקוקה שנאהב את כדור הארץ החי והיפה הזה, ואת כל היצורים הקסומים – כולל אותנו עצמנו – שהם ילדיו. ואז הפעולות, קטנות או גדולות, יעלו באופן טבעי כדאגה לכל החיים, ובכללם גם לעצמנו.

עבורי, החיבור הטבעי בין תרגול פנימי ודאגה לעולם אינו רעיון מופשט. אני מעורב באקטיביזם אקולוגי מסוג כזה או אחר כבר לפחות חמישים שנה, מאז שהייתי בהודו בשנת 1975, כאשר נשביתי ברעיון של Sattva – מילה בסנסקריטית המתייחסת להרמוניה, טוהר ואמת. הבנתי שמדיטציה, שבה התודעה והלב זורמים עם כל מה שסביבם, ודאגה לעולם, נובעים מאותו המקום. הבנתי שדהרמה אינה פרויקט אישי, ושמדיטציה עוסקת בחיבור. בהמשך לכך, כאשר הגעתי לישראל, הצטרפתי לקבוצה של משפחות שייסדו את כליל כקהילה המבוססת על אקולוגיה, הסתפקות עצמית, חיים צנועים ושלום, כפי שלימד מהטמה גנדי. הלכנו עם זה עד הסוף. בחמש השנים הראשונות לחיי בכליל חיינו עם שלושת ילדינו הקטנים בבקתת עץ פשוטה, ללא חשמל כלל. וזו הייתה תקופה של עושר קסום ומעורבות עמוקה עם העולם שסביבנו. צפינו בסנוניות המגיעות מאפריקה ובונות את קיניהן היפים להפליא, עשויים בוץ וחצץ, דבוקים לתקרת מחסן הכלים שלנו; ובזיקית המחליפה את צבעה כשהיא מתקדמת לאטה במורד עץ החרוב.

כיום כליל היא כפר אקולוגי בן אלף תושבים ודומה שהיה זה ניסוי שהצליח. אבל למעשה, כל דבר שאנו עושים יוצא אל העולם ומחולל שינוי, קטן או גדול. זה אינו בידינו, וגם איננו יכולים למדוד את תוצאות מעשינו. אנחנו יכולים רק להעניק לעולם את מתנותינו ואת תובנותינו, ולתת לקארמה לעשות את השאר.

Cleaning The Windows of Perception

Our senses are like gateways or doorways, by which the world enters. They supply raw unprocessed invisible energy, such as light, which trigger electrical impulses in the brain, and we have learnt to build interpretations from such impulses. Forgetting that they are interpretations we regard them as reality. But if we are made of the world, why do we need these doorways to rejoin it, and this complex chain of processing? Because we have stepped out of the world, and separated ourselves for the sake of survival. We have shut the world out, and what is left are the small windows, thin slices of the vast electromagnetic spectrum around us. Which we believe is the world.

The senses capture us because they are the raw materials from which we build interpretations, perceptions and constructions in the mind and in our life. We find ourselves swept away and controlled by the senses, like puppets - desiring, reacting, conceiving, believing, perceiving. But it is possible to reconnect with our sensory inputs without the automatic processing of things, and this can return us to total intimacy and a deep inner peace. The Buddha said, in the Sutta Nipata (III,12) “For some people, contact, the point where senses meet an object, is enthralling. And so they are washed by the tides of being, drifting along an empty pointless road……But others come to understand their sense activity, and because they understand it, the stillness fills them with delight.”

Do we remember our timeless joy and ease when we were kids and swept away by the magic that our senses opened up – the butterfly or hummingbird flitting by, the great clouds rolling across the sky, the fascination with simple things. I remember as a boy standing for hours under a fragrant lilac bush. Once when I was deep in the earth digging the foundations of our house many years ago, my small daughter came up and asked: “Still looking for grass?”

Meditation helps us to rejoin the senses as they are, in the present moment, and gradually reduce the automatic pressure to process everything. This expands our connection with what appears every moment, leading to a deep sense of rejoining and merging with the world. Life itself with all its wonder resurfaces from under all the concepts and habits. The deep habit of the mind to create a constant sense of self through which the world is filtered, can take a rest. It can happen from the simple act of reconnecting with our breathing or with the touch of the body on the earth, if we keep doing it. One of the classic Buddhist texts about this is the Bahiya Sutta. Bahiya was a yogi living in India by the sea, who was told by the Gods that contrary to his beliefs, he was not actually enlightened, and he needed to go to the Buddha to receive guidance. After a hasty journey he met the Buddha and begged him repeatedly to give him instructions. The Buddha said that this was not the time for teachings, but as it seemed so urgent he would give them, but in brief. This is what he said (paraphrased):

Bāhiya, you should train yourself thus: In reference to the seen, practice just seeing. In reference to the heard, only hearing. In reference to the sensed, only sensing. In reference to the cognized, only cognition. When that happens, Bāhiya, there is no separation in your connections with the world. When there is no observer and observed in your connections with things you are neither here nor there nor between the two. This, just this, is awakening and the end of suffering.

The power of this to reduce suffering became really clear to me recently during the constant daily sounds of rockets and artillery here in Clil. Every boom and bang did indeed enter through the senses and trigger the nervous system. But I made sure that it didn’t go anywhere, or build anything in the mind and heart, but went away immediately as it came, and I could stay in peace and compassion. It doesn’t mean that the trigger is neutral. It wasn’t pleasant. Indeed a painful sensation is painful, a pleasant one is pleasurable and neither painful or pleasant is just neutral. This is Vedana, the immediate push and pull of the senses. But our capacity to witness pleasant and unpleasant rather than take it in, eating from the fruit of the tree, as in the biblical parable of the Garden of Eden, will help us to stay in the Garden rather than be kicked out.

So what does the Garden look like? What do we see if we get close to the senses, and know the stream of messages that they bring without the need for constant processing? Everything becomes richer and way more fascinating. Even Vedana, a simple pain in the body, can open to a kaleidoscope of textures, changes and layers of meaning, and it can be a great help to our healing. If we are not automatically controlled by our learned interpretations and perceptions, we feel less boxed in by facts and beliefs, and can be more creative, flexible and playful with how we experience life. Things get more mysterious and unknown. The flag flutters in the wind, as in the Zen image. What is moving? The flag? The wind? The mind? Cutting through the habitual layers of interpretation and conception that cover the senses, reveals a boundless world. “If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite” wrote William Blake in 1790. Here is one of his examples: “To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.” It is not a psychedelic experience! It is how we can actually see reality.

החושים שלנו הם כמו שערים או פתחים שדרכם העולם נכנס. הם מספקים אנרגיה גולמית, בלתי מעובדת ובלתי נראית, כמו אור, שמעוררת דחפים חשמליים במוח, ומתוך הדחפים הללו למדנו לבנות פירושים ותפיסות. אלא ששכחנו שאלו אך פירושים ותפיסות, ואנו מתייחסים אליהם כאל המציאות עצמה.

אך אם אנחנו עשויים מן העולם, מדוע אנו זקוקים לשערים הללו כדי לשוב ולהתחבר אליו, ולשרשרת כה מורכבת של עיבוד ותיווך? משום שבשלב מסוים יצאנו מתוך העולם והפרדנו את עצמנו ממנו למען הישרדותנו. סגרנו את העולם בחוץ, ומה שנותר הם חלונות קטנים – פרוסות דקות מתוך הספקטרום האלקטרומגנטי העצום שסביבנו – אשר אותן אנו נוטים לחשוב ל”עולם”.

החושים לוכדים אותנו משום שהם חומרי הגלם שמהם אנו בונים פירושים, תפיסות ומבנים מנטליים בחיינו ובתודעתנו. אנו נסחפים ונשלטים על ידם כבובות על חוט – משתוקקים, מגיבים, חושבים, מאמינים ותופסים. אבל אפשר גם ארחת. ניתן להתחבר מחדש אל החוויה החושית עצמה, מבלי להיגרר לעיבוד האוטומטי של הדברים, וחיבור כזה יכול להשיב אותנו לאינטימיות עמוקה ולשלווה פנימית עמוקה. הבודהה אומר בסוטה ניפאטה (III,12) : “יש אנשים שעבורם המגע, המקום שבו החושים פוגשים אובייקט, הוא מהפנט. כך הם נשטפים בזרמי הקיום ונסחפים בדרך ריקה וחסרת תכלית… אך אחרים לומדים להבין את פעילות החושים, ומתוך ההבנה הזאת הדממה ממלאת אותם בעונג.”

האם אנו זוכרים את תחושת השמחה והקלות חסרות הזמן של הילדות, כאשר נסחפנו בקסם שהחושים פתחו בפנינו – פרפר או ציפור יונקת חולפים לידנו, עננים עצומים מתגלגלים בשמים, או הקסם שבדברים פשוטים. אני זוכר את עצמי כילד עומד שעות ליד שיח לילך ריחני. פעם, לפני שנים רבות, כאשר הייתי שקוע עמוק באדמה וחפרתי את יסודות ביתנו, בתי הקטנה ניגשה אליי ושאלה: “אתה עדיין מחפש דשא?”

המדיטציה עוזרת לנו לשוב אל החושים כפי שהם, ברגע הנוכחי, ולהפחית בהדרגה את הלחץ האוטומטי לעבד ולפרש הכול. הדבר מרחיב את הקשר שלנו עם מה שמופיע בכל רגע, ומוביל לתחושת חיבור והתמזגות עמוקה עם העולם. החיים עצמם, על כל פלאם, שבים ומופיעים מתחת לכל ההרגלים והמושגים. ההרגל העמוק של התודעה ליצור תחושת “אני” קבועה שדרכה העולם מסונן, יכול לנוח לרגע. זה יכול לקרות מתוך הפעולה הפשוטה של חיבור מחדש לנשימה או למגע הגוף עם האדמה, אם רק נמשיך לתרגל זאת.

אם כך באהייַה [ענה המבורך], עליך להתאמן באופן הזה: ‘בנראה יהיה אך ורק הנראה, בנשמע יהיה אך ורק הנשמע, במוּרגש יהיה אך ורק המוּרגש, בנתפס יהיה אך ורק הנתפס. כך עליך להתאמן באהייַה. כאשר בשבילך רק הנראה יהיה במה שנראה, רק הנשמע יהיה במה שנשמע, רק המוּרגש יהיה במה שהוּרגש, רק הנתפס יהיה במה שנתפס, אז באהייַה, אינך ‘עם זה’. כאשר אינך ‘עם זה’, אתה לא ‘בזה’. כאשר אינך ‘בזה’, אינך כאן, שם או ביניהם. אכן, זהו סופם של אי הנחת, הכאב והסבל.

Vimalakirti Sutra and Nonduality

The Vimalakirti Nirdesa Sutra was written nearly 2,000 years ago. It is one of the foundational teachings of the Mahayana path, and is subtle, humorous, wise and enlightening. Vimalakirti says that ordinary folk can awaken, not just monks. The text teaches non-duality, that awakening is beyond time and effort and not a personal process. It collapses the gap between emptiness and form, between nirvana and samsara, and between subject and object. Awakening is beyond our mind which is normally busy with conceptual fabrication. At one point Vimalakirti tells one of the Buddha’s disciples: “You are a make-believe teacher teaching a make-believe teaching to make-believe practitioners about make-believe liberation!”

Here is a small imaginative piece within the Sutra about how we can view ourselves and all beings from an awakened non-dual point of view. I have edited the translation of this piece from Robert Thurman and John R. McRae’s translations of the Sutra. I am grateful to Sandhya for translating it to Hebrew.

Compassion as a Default When Everything Seems to be Going to Pieces

Sometimes things seem to be so difficult or extreme, such as states of war, violence, natural catastrophes, social break down, or disease, that they seem beyond the usual coping mechanisms of the mind. We can feel lost and helpless and sometimes sink into depression, unrealistic hopes, denial or distraction. Often the situation may be beyond the capacities we have for inner psycho-spiritual practice. For example, we may feel that mindful awareness is not enough or is anyway impossible when we have our backs to the wall, and are in survival mode. Agitation and despair may take over the heart. At those times we do have a default place, and inner refuge. We can fall back on compassion. We let go of being burnt out trying to fix unfixable circumstances. Instead, we turn directly to the experience of everything being too much for this human being that is faced with the impossible task of making sense of things. We face our limits and see our incapacities as the crying child within us that says “I can’t”. The centre of gravity shifts from the mind that cannot manage its role, to the heart that is always ready. The heart radiates forgiveness, kindness and a hug to ourselves. Love tinged with the colour of pain. This is compassion. It creates a radical shift in our inner climate and opens a readiness to respond to the situation in new and healthy ways.

We all have compassion. It is revealed as the spontaneous instinctual responses when we meet suffering in many ordinary situations. Most of us will help a blind man trying to cross the street, a lost child or a wounded animal. We will bring kindness when visiting the family of someone who has died, or a sick friend. We will support those who stumble if they are close to us. However we can easily get burnt out by the constant and relentless calls for help from others, as so many doctors, therapists and carers know. Our heart can shut down and we can feel numbness. One way to break this pattern is to embrace the numbness itself, to radiate a caring and forgiving warmth to our burnt out heart itself.

All of us can develop and expand our compassion, so that it becomes our closest friend, our ground and our ally in unpredictable life, and brings immeasurable richness to our life instead of the poverty of separation and contraction. It will empower our wide open heart that is ready to love and engage with the world as it is, moment by moment. It is living with an intimacy with all of existence, which is the doorway to awakening. For compassion to grow in us we need to keep manifesting and extending it in daily life. In particular during times of conflict, as now in the Middle East, when the suffering touches everyone, we can try to move the heart from fear and anger and drop into a more primal place of caring for ourselves and everyone else. As we go into the shelter we feel the others there and radiate our kindness to them. We sense the pain and fear all around of those being bombed and attacked, never mind which side they are on. The cries of the children of Palestinians in Gaza, of Israelis and Iranians are the same tears. We hear them all.

In addition, we can bring in compassion whenever we meditate. We can use phrases to wish ourselves and others to be free from suffering. We can spread the caring, healing vibrations of our heart, first to ourselves, then imagining ourselves in the shoes of those that we know who are going through tough times, then spread the circle of our compassion to others whom we do not know and eventually include all living beings sharing this web of life.

When things are too big for us, it can force us to reach out to a bigger view, a life-death perspective. We can cry, but find ourselves in sync with and taken by this stream of life. The sense of separation and struggle to cope as an individual can fade, and begin to feel like an illusion. Instead, we discover our affinity or closeness with all others who are vulnerable. We are born in a body, pulled out of the universe briefly for reasons we can never know, and then we go back there. Life makes us and takes us. Along with everyone and all other beings. We know that life has in the end no protection or protector, and passes, and is subject to the uncontrollable winds of the world. We are all equally not in control. We are all trying to survive and in the end cannot. Yet along with this realization of vulnerability, comes a deep love for life that is more impersonal. The mystery and wonder of our birth, of the baby at the breast, the vastness of everything touches us in the deepest place. We all love life. Knowing this, our hearts beat with all beings. This is compassion.

לעיתים נדמה שמצב הדברים קשה או קיצוני עד כדי כך – כמו למשל במצבי מלחמה, אלימות, אסונות טבע, התפוררות חברתית או מחלה – שהוא חורג מיכולת ההתמודדות הרגילה של התודעה. במצבים שכאלו, אנו עלולים להרגיש אבודים וחסרי אונים, ולעיתים לשקוע בדיכאון, בתקוות לא מציאותיות, בהכחשה או בהסחת דעת. לא פעם גם נדמה שבמצבים שכאלו היכולת העומדת לרשותנו לתרגול פנימי פסיכו-רוחני מתפוגגת. למשל, אנו עשויים לחוש שהמודעות הקשובה אינה מספקת, או אף בלתי אפשרית, כאשר גבנו אל הקיר ואנו במצב הישרדותי. אי שקט וייאוש עלולים להשתלט על ליבנו.

ובכל זאת, גם ברגעים כאלה יש לנו מקום לחזור אליו. מקלט פנימי. אנו יכולים לשוב ולהישען על החמלה. אנו מרפים מן המאמץ המתיש הנובע מן הניסיון לתקן מצבים שאינם ניתנים לתיקון. במקום זאת, בכוחנו להפנות את תשומת ליבנו ישירות אל החוויה לפיה “הכול יותר מדי” עבור אדם הניצב מול המשימה הבלתי אפשרית של לעשות סדר ולהבין את פשר הדברים. אנו פוגשים את גבולותינו ורואים את חוסר היכולת שלנו כילד הבוכה שבתוכנו האומר: “אינני יכול”. מרכז הכובד עובר מן המיינד שאינו מצליח למלא את תפקידו אל הלב שתמיד מוכן. הלב מקרין סליחה, טוב לב וחיבוק כלפי עצמנו – אהבה הצבועה בגוון של כאב. זוהי חמלה. היא מחוללת היפוך עמוק באקלים הפנימי שלנו ומאפשרת להגיב למציאות בדרכים חדשות ובריאות.

לכולנו יש חמלה. היא מתגלה כתגובה ספונטנית ואינסטינקטיבית כאשר אנו פוגשים סבל במצבים יומיומיים רבים. רובנו נעזור לאדם עיוור המנסה לחצות את הרחוב, לילד אבוד או לבעל חיים פצוע. נביא מטוב ליבנו כשנבקר משפחה שאיבדה אדם יקר או חבר חולה. נתמוך במי שמועד, במיוחד אם הוא קרוב אלינו. אך קל לנו גם להישחק מן הקריאות הבלתי פוסקות לעזרה מצד אחרים – כפי שיודעים היטב רופאים, מטפלים ואנשי סיעוד רבים. הלב עלול להיסגר ואנו עשויים לחוש קהות. דרך אחת לשבור דפוס זה היא דווקא לאמץ ולחבק את הקהות עצמה, להקרין חום אכפתי וסולח אל לבנו השחוק.

כולנו יכולים לפתח ולהרחיב את החמלה שלנו, כך שתהפוך לחברתנו הקרובה, לקרקע עבורנו ולבת בריתנו בתוך חיים בלתי צפויים, ותביא לחיינו עושר שאין לו שיעור במקום הדלות של נפרדות והתכווצות. החמלה מעצימה את ליבנו הפתוח לרווחה, המוכן לאהוב ולהיפגש עם העולם כפי שהוא, רגע אחר רגע. זוהי דרך חיים של קרבה ואינטימיות עם כלל הקיום – שהיא שער להתעוררות. כדי שהחמלה תצמח בתוכנו, עלינו להמשיך לבטא ולהרחיב אותה בחיי היומיום.

Finding Stillness Within The Storm

Here are some ways of remaining steady and aware during the current violent conflicts.

· Our attention is stolen by many distractions, by the media and an overload of information. We need to reclaim that attention so that there is a freedom to focus on what’s important. That may involve minimising the tsunami of stimulation.

· Life is greater than us. See life now in the buds of spring. See life everywhere. We can trust life which may have more intelligence than we have. The planet will keep going despite what we do.

· Keep dropping into the shoes of the other, and see how they look at life. This includes people we don’t like, or we think are ignorant. When we do this we gain great heart and understanding, and we become peacemakers in our community.

· We cry if we need to. It’s okay. We can feel fear, concern, and sadness. It is our humanness and this too comes from life and our sensitive heart. But we wipe the tears and let the emotion flow past naturally, without building stories and narratives.

· Come down from the need to fix things. From the beginning of time all beings have been killing each other and also caring for each other. Of course we do what we can to help ourselves and others and make change, but from the place of compassion not from the pressure to constantly fix what we cannot control. When we see how all of us are so easily swept away, let compassion arise naturally. Compassion can be with us all the time as a great caring for this precious life.

· The big picture—a life point of view that is more than the perspective of the ‘small I’, brings us to a place of equanimity. The vastness and yet the fragility of life takes our breath away. Life comes and goes but we don’t need to lose it now, for example from worry. We can stand steady in the midst of it all.

All beings are subject to the uncontrollable pressures of existence, which in traditional Buddhist language are called the winds of the world. We respond by a constant struggle to survive and control what disturbs us. Consciousness becomes “sucked into” the effort to control, which ultimately fails because life is as uncontrollable as the wind. Paradoxically, the “secure way is the insecure way,” meaning the more we obsess over security— constant business with defence and our needs — the more insecure and threatened we feel. Trauma only adds energy to this.

Meditation shows that we cannot control the arising of thoughts, experiences, emotions, and instead we can allow things to arise and pass naturally. So do we choose endless struggle or just give up completely and get drunk? The Buddha’s response to this either/or was to teach the sublime dharma that we and our experience of the world are being built dynamically in every moment by a vast network of causes and conditions. We sing the world into existence. We discover how the experience of the world and ourselves are being built together, and are actually one. We can surrender to the “big picture” and the mystery of not knowing the answers and rest in wonder. We witness the changing display of appearances, and hold the whole thing as lightly as possible. Then we act from that place. We go out and sow the best seeds that we can, and feed, care for and look after ourselves, others, and the world. A Bodhisattva is essentially a farmer.

החיים גדולים מאיתנו. ראו את החיים עכשיו בניצני האביב. ראו את החיים בכל מקום. אנו יכולים לבטוח בחיים, שהרי ייתכן שיש בהם יותר תבונה מכפי שיש בנו. כדור הארץ ימשיך להתקיים למרות מה שנעשה.

Climbing Up The Mountain or Landing on Top?

Today we are in a spiritual supermarket. Almost a Divine Disneyland. On offer are a myriad of techniques and methods for getting specific promised results some very demanding and lengthy, some offering a quick fix, for example meditative ways of finding more inner and outer peace, quiet and harmony. But at the same time there are nondual Satsang teachings especially online, that tell you that there is nothing to fix and nothing to really do and change because Enlightenment is your basic nature. This can create a great deal of confusion and pull the rug out from under our determination.

Instead, we need some basic wisdom and common sense. If we are at the bottom of the mountain getting ready for a spiritual climb ahead, and a teachers voice comes wafting down from the peak, with authority, saying: “up here there is no path and no mountain”. We can accept that that is the way things look from up there, but we do need to ask how you got up there? And if I don’t climb at all, but just parachute down to the top of the mountain, maybe I will be exactly the same person as I am now, except with a nice view? The great non-dual spiritual masters, from the Buddha, to Papaji, Nisargadatta Maharaj, Ramana Maharshi, Krishnamurti and others, all had years of inner work, sometimes really tough going, behind them.

For most of us we need find the right path and get going. How do we do this? What is our right path? In the spiritual supermarket we will need a lot of experimentation: to be playful. It will be a combination of finding a path and letting the path find us. If a path feels right at the moment, is deep, authentic, ethical, and wholesome, without teachers that are needy and abusive, we can go for it for now and allow things to change as we progress. Other paths and interesting byways will appear on the way.

As we start the climb, for sure we may think about the difficulty of it, and what things will be like from the top. But quite soon we may be amazed by the lovely small flowers along the side of the path. And further up we may be inspired by the freedom we feel and the glory of the world around. And when we reach the top we too can talk about how things look from there – endless and perfect. Then we know that the voices from the top of the mountain, that tell us that Enlightenment is indeed inherent in life, and already part of our being, are actually a real gift that have inspired us from the start, and that the points of view from the bottom of the mountain and the top are both legitimate and useful and part of a fulfilling life.

It is fascinating that around 2000 years ago, there seems to have been a dialogue somewhat like that of today. Faced with a well-built Buddhist path of purification, in which monks occupied the high ground, and Awakening was almost unreachable, there was a revolution. The ancient Indian nondual teachings, as taught in the Upanishads, inspired practitioners to explode the classical and revered Buddhist practices and replace them with teachings of the Absolute, of ultimacy, of emptiness, and of endless compassion. This became the basis of the Mahayana vehicle, and moved out to Tibet, China and then Japan. The Vimalakirti sutra[i] for example asks if the path needs to be the province of renounced monks or is awakening inherent in conscious existence, in life itself, and therefore available to all? Can deep states of realisation and stillness not be part of ordinary life? Is the dharma a path or is it ultimate reality? And if it is ultimate reality, it must be infinite, and it cannot be an experience which we have, and that changes.

Vimalakirti says that passions are not a hindrance to awakening, but a natural and healthy response to the world. Awakening can happen with the passions and even supported by them. He shows that Nirvana and Samsara are not ultimate reality but points of view. Nirvana, translated as putting out the fire, has no meaning, according to Vimalakirti, since all experience is dreamlike, insubstantial and passing. What has no substance cannot burn and so cannot be extinguished. Like the Mahayana path until today, Vimalakirti did not throw out the huge resource of traditional Buddhist practices and principles, from the Eightfold Path to the 7 Factors of Awakening, but they are taken as a very valuable toolkit, and not holy or irreplaceable. Here are some questions for us, inspired by Vimalakirti. Give each some quiet contemplation and let them echo within us.

Can the universe and the whole of creation not be perfect? Or are the imperfections we see only in the lens through which we look at things?

Is awakening inherent in life? Or is it something beyond virtually all living beings, needing intense effort and many lifetimes to realise?

If we want to calm and purify our noisy, stressful and troubling mind, what mind thinks that?

When we make statements, assumptions and axioms about reality do we know reality or only our constructions?

Are ordinary perceptions a problem or are they inherently free, coming and going like the wind, and freeing us as they pass by?

Are you real, or a dreamlike being reading these dreamlike words and having dreamlike thoughts about them?

Is the dharma something that is knowable by the senses and the mind? If so, is it our creation and not ultimate?

What doesn’t change?

Are We Listening?

We have an inner child that is constantly calling for attention and care. We are surrounded by nature that is calling us to pay attention to a world that is bigger and perhaps wiser than we are. We are in the midst of societies and communities that are crying out with a great deal of suffering and struggle. We are on the threshold of a divine and infinite awareness that is knocking on our door and asking to be heard. Are we listening?

Opening ourselves to these voices need us to reduce all the noise all around. Our attention and awareness are constantly stolen by an endless cacophony from telephones, media, social chatter, busyness and disturbance all around. We need to slow down, quieten the outer clamour, and allow the music of the world to get through. My wife, Rachel, prunes the olive trees by listening to what each tree tells her about the way it wants to live best. I listen to the voices of the chickens when they greet me in the morning, and I can understand quite a few of the basic messages that they give each other. Our bodies are constantly streaming the music of cellular life. The mind has an endless conversation with itself and with us as listener. All we need to do is to listen to the music of the mind. We don’t need headphones. When it is listened to it doesn’t need to shout. Instead, the mind quietens down. Even more subtle is the vibration of the infinite awareness which gives birth to our conscious experience. There is a divine stillness there.

One time I was sitting with a Tibetan teacher and he reminded us that the Buddhist practice invites us to awaken out of our dream of conceptual thinking simply from the sound of the rustle of leaves or the flow of water. As he was speaking, a bulldozer was working just outside the meditation hall and making a huge noise. So, we asked the teacher – and can you awaken also from the sound of a bulldozer? He thought about it for a moment and then said, actually, yes. When I was in Varanasi there was a daily meditation group that sat on a shelf outside the generator that was powering the sewage disposal systems. The great engines made a constant deep rumble. The yogi who was guiding us said that we should start by listening to the rumble locally, and then sense that the same vibration stretched infinitely to the end of the universe.

Conflict is always loud. Friction screams. Arguments between people is a competition of decibels. But it goes much deeper. Lack of listening is a major source of violence and war. When people are not listened to, they feel they have no choice but to manifest their pain and hurt by hurting others or themselves. But deep listening is the fundamental way that peace is made and violence ceases. In years of peace activities, workshops, and group work, especially with Palestinians and Israelis, the strongest means to make an irreversible shift in positions of enmity and turn it to peaceful connection, is through deep listening, in which we step into the shoes of the other. In the Transformation of Suffering weekends that we used to guide in Nablus, the core activity was one hour in which an Israeli and a Palestinian in dyads shared the pains, struggles and hopes that each go through in their lives. Peace was made then.

How do we listen? We pay deep and careful attention with our mind and our ears and eyes. We suspend the immediate inclination to evaluate, judge, criticise or explain. We stay open and ready for anything that arrives. We open our heart and sense the feelings and nuances behind the worlds we hear. We are aware of our own body’s responses to what we are hearing. We are in a state of total allowing. We may think that such a listening will limit our ability to understand what we are being told. But then we can be surprised by the powerful insights and understandings that arrive when we get our judgemental mind out of the way.

Listening with our heart is a core quality of meditation. It opens us to the unknown, it expands the ability to be just aware of existence at this moment without the pressure to do anything with it or explain or understand or improve or fix it. It is just allowing the voice of existence to flood through us and expand our horizon endlessly.

Today we are suffering from a tsunami of words, flooding in from social media. We need an unusual level of discrimination to receive words that are helpful and worth something, and ignore words that confuse, brainwash, lie, and distract. The best way to do this is to know our own words, and ask ourselves, when we speak or write: What is worth saying? How do we purify our words so that they bring blessings to ourselves and others?

It is worth first of all understanding both the power and the emptiness of words. The power is obvious. Think of the power of the words of a politician that can whip up emotion in millions of people, create insecurity and fear of an enemy, imagined or real, and incite terrible violence. Think of an insult that we suffer that stays with us and revolves around our mind for years. Think of the climate of criticism and putting down that is so prevalent in daily life, often stealing the joy from everyone within earshot.

But at the same time words are empty, made of nothing. Words are empty vessels carrying agreements. They signify things but are not themselves things. They are the map but not the territory. In that sense they are never completely satisfying. And if we want to express anything more subtle or deep we are mostly lost for words. T.S. Elliot, one of the greatest poets in the English language, had to admit ‘twenty years largely wasted…..trying to learn to use words, and every attempt is a wholly new start, and a different kind of failure…..a raid on the inarticulate with shabby equipment always deteriorating…..’[i] No wonder many spiritual teachers teach in silence and communicate their teaching as a stream of non-verbal contact. You either get it or you don’t. Chuang Tzu, the ancient Taoist sage, said that ‘Words never communicate reality. So show me the man who has given up words. I want a word with him’.[ii] In other words, we have no choice but to use these imperfect tools of language. But at least we can do so with the awareness of their emptiness and yet their power.

So what is Right Speech? The Buddha defined right speech as one of the eight primary paths leading to awakening. So we do have to take it very seriously, and cannot put it aside and assume that spiritual practice or religious life is all about meditation or worship, after which we can scream at our partner, or cause people to hate each other, or make untrue promises to customers in order to sell them things. The Buddha defined right speech as follows:

If it is not true and not helpful, don’t say it.

If it is true but not helpful don’t say it,

If it is not true but helpful, don’t say it,

If it is both true and helpful. Find the right time.

Wow! This is a very demanding definition. It may seem that only angels can speak like that. I don’t think so. And here is why. The first and primary intention is to bring our speech into awareness. To be more mindful of what we are saying. This turns speaking into spiritual practice. What does this mean in practice? It means being more awake as to the source of the words within us, and to the effect of the words we are saying both on ourselves and on others. Words are the result of thought, which is heavily influenced by emotion and feeling. Thoughts themselves arise out of consciousness or mind, much as waves arise out of the ocean but are also made of water. Consciousness is pure, it is our Buddha nature, our pure being. But as it is expressed in forms such as thoughts and then words, it takes on the shape of our memory, our conditioning, our personality, our habits and patterns. In order to purify speech, our awareness needs to extend in both directions – to the source of words and to the results.

In relation to the results, we need to be aware of the quality of our words and whether they are helpful, kind and reduce suffering in the world, or do the opposite. How do they land within someone else’s inner life? Do they cause confusion, disturbance, defensiveness, anger? Or do they help trigger calmness, confidence, clarity and kindness? For example we may have a pattern of needing to control, which makes us give unasked-for advice to everyone. But we can surface the pattern in ourselves when others get irritated and even disempowered rather than empowered. The dialogue becomes a very useful mirror. It boomerangs back on us and helps us to see ourselves.

I met a woman who was talking about her work, and her language was peppered with criticism and blame of others, of almost everyone, from the Prime Minister to the office cleaner. It felt like a cloud of negativity. Her practice would be to notice how her criticisms backfired and caused relationships to be painful and disappointing, and to know the pain inside her that projected out onto others. Mindfulness of speech would also show her how her softer words created positive conditions around her, allowing others to get closer to her, and how that felt.

The practice of awareness of speech is able to bring us into a present moment which is wonderful, always surprising and even sacred. A word of the Bible can be holy to Jews as the word created by a spontaneous brush stroke can be holy to a Zen monk. It is the deep attention that makes it so. If we are genuinely aware, a lie can feel really crude, rough and painful. A word spoken right, that encourages the best in others and creates healing, can be felt directly as a moment of joy and ease. It creates an atmosphere which spreads in all directions. It spreads out to help others. It spreads back to lighten our own inner life, and it spreads into the future to sow seeds that benefit all.

Words do not need to interrupt silence. And silence does not need to interrupt words. We need not be afraid of silence; sometimes it can help us listen to our precious inner messages.

היום אנו סובלים מצונמי של מילים, המציף אותנו מן הרשתות החברתיות. אנו זקוקים לרמת הבחנה בלתי־רגילה כדי לקלוט מילים שיש בהן תועלת וערך, ולהתעלם ממילים שמבלבלות, שוטפות את המוח, משקרות ומסיחות את הדעת. הדרך הטובה ביותר לעשות זאת היא להכיר את המילים שלנו עצמנו, ולשאול את עצמנו, כאשר אנו מדברים או כותבים: מה ראוי להיאמר? כיצד נוכל לטהר את מילותינו כך שיביאו ברכה לנו ולאחרים?

ראשית, כדאי להבין את כוחן ואת ריקותן של המילים. כוחן מובן מאליו. חִשבו למשל על כוח מילותיו של פוליטיקאי המלבה את רגשותיהם של מיליוני אנשים, זורע חוסר ביטחון ופחד מפני אויב דמיוני או מציאותי ומסית לאלימות; על משפט שפגע בנו לפני שנים ועדיין מלווה אותנו; על אווירת הביקורתיות הנפוצה בחברה הישראלית, הגוזלת מאתנו את שמחת החיים שלנו.

בו בזמן, המילים הן ריקות. הן מסמנות דברים, אבל אינן הדברים עצמם. הן המפה, לא השטח. במובן זה מילים לעולם לא יוכלו לספק אותנו לחלוטין, ואם ברצוננו לבטא דבר מה עמוק או מעודן יותר, בדרך כלל ניוותר ללא מילים. ת. ס. אליוט, אחד מגדולי המשוררים בשפה האנגלית, הודה: [L1] “בזבזתי עשרים שנה [...] בניסיונות ללמוד כיצד להשתמש במילים; וכל ניסיון היה התחלה חדשה לגמרי וסוג שונה של כישלון [...] הסתערות נוספת על מה שאינו ניתן לביטוי עם ציוד עלוב ומתפרק.” אין פלא, אפוא, שמורים רוחניים רבים מלמדים בשתיקה ומנחילים את תורתם באמצעות תקשורת לא מילולית. או שהבנת או שלא. חכם הטאו הקדום צ’ואנג צו אמר כי המילים לעולם אינן מוסרות את המציאות. “היכן אוכל למצוא את האיש שוויתר על המילים? הייתי רוצה להחליף אתו מילה.” כלומר, אנו משתמשים בכלי הלא מושלם של השפה מחוסר ברירה.

וואו! זו הגדרה תובענית מאוד. נדמה שרק מלאכים יוכלו לעמוד בדרישות כאלו. אני לא חושב כך. האימון הראשוני הוא פיתוח מודעות לדיבור שלנו, תשומת לב לדברים שאנחנו אומרות. המודעות כשלעצמה הופכת את הדיבור לתרגול רוחני. זה אומר שעלינו לפתח ערנות למקור ממנו נובעות המילים שאנו אומרות ולהשפעתן עלינו ועל הזולת. מילים נובעות ממחשבות ומעוצבות על ידי מצבי רוח ותחושות. אבל המחשבות עצמן עולות מתוך דממת התודעה, כפי שהגלים עולים מן האוקיינוס ועשויים מאותם המים. התודעה היא טהורה, היא טבע הבודהא שלנו, הווייתנו הטהורה. התודעה באה לידי ביטוי כזיכרון, התניות, אישיות, מנהגים ודפוסים אשר הופכים למחשבות ולאחר מכן למילים. על מנת לטהר את הדיבור עלינו להרחיב את המודעות שלנו בשני כיוונים – אל מקור המילים ואל השלכותיהן.

פגשתי אישה שדיברה אתי על עבודתה, ושפתה הייתה גדושה ביקורת עוקצנית וטענות כלפי כולם, החל בראש הממשלה וכלה במנקה של המשרד. הרגשתי כאילו אני שרוי בתוך ענן של שליליות. התרגול המתאים עבורה היה הבחנה באופן בו חצי הביקורתיות שלה פוגעים בה עצמה ומובילים למערכות יחסים כואבות ומאכזבות, והכרה בכך שהכאב הפנימי שלה מושלך על הסובבים. פיתוח מודעות קשובה לדיבור היה מאפשר לה לשים לב מתי מילותיה יוצרות אווירה חיובית, ואילו רגשות עולים בה במצב כזה. הבחנה כזאת היתה מקדמת אותה.

תרגול מודעות לדיבור יכול להביא אותנו לרגע ההווה, שהוא נפלא, מפתיע תמיד ואף מקודש. מילה המופיעה בתנ’‘ך יכולה להיות קדושה עבור יהודי, כשם שמילה שנוצרה באמצעות משיכת מכחול ספונטנית יכולה להיות קדושה עבור נזיר זן. תשומת הלב העמוקה היא זו שיוצרת את תחושת הקדושה. אם אנו שרויים בהקשבה עמוקה, שקר יגרום לנו לתחושה מחוספסת, קשה ומכאיבה. לעומת זאת, מילה נכונה, אשר מעודדת ומחזקת את האנשים שסביבנו, תיצור בנו תחושה של שמחה ונחת. היא יוצרת אווירה חיובית המתפשטת לכל עבר. היא מתפשטת החוצה כדי לעזור לאחרים, פנימה כדי להאיר את חיינו הפנימיים ואף לעבר העתיד, בו היא זורעת זרעים שייטיבו עם היצורים החיים כולם, כלומר מכוונת את הקארמה שלנו לעבר שלמות.

Free Beings Meeting Difficulty

We are Buddhas dressed up as ordinary individuals, as you and me. But a little reflection shows that however much we believe in this dressing up, however much we experience ourselves as separate beings, it cannot really be so. Our bodies are made of the same stuff as the stars and the earth, and return there after a short time. Our minds are an expression of the total awareness of all life, part of a stream of intelligence that includes all living beings. Our awareness is potentially infinite. We can use our Buddha eye and take the point of view of life. Intuitively we do know that life is impersonal, inclusive, just doing itself as it needs to, driven by some mysterious karmic energy, and perfect. Did God make a mistake?

Yet we do have an overwhelming sense that life is a struggle. There are wars, violence, sickness, abuse and a sense that everything is utterly out of control. Birth is hard. My favourite mystical singer, Parvathi Baul, cries: “What bad things did I do that made me be reborn into time?” All beings once born are subject to ‘’the winds of the world’’, which drive our needs to survive. Perhaps we can understand the ancient texts when they talk about the ultimate Liberation as not needing to be born again into a body, which is a bit like going back to school as we failed our exams.

We have in the end no choice but to be a friend of those limited experiences that arise after our birth, and yet know the unlimited. We can embrace both of them. Where? How? Both of them lie in the heart of our experience. This is the fundamental liberating insight of the Dharma. For example our profound and sometimes desperate wish for things to be different, to be other than they are, is also the longing to return to a perfection from which we came, and which we can imagine because it is the nature of the world and our cells. Our anger, concerns and pressure can be seen as our caring heart, our love, that is trying to protect our life and the life of others, but gets carried away and exaggerated. There is the mud, or better the compost, but it is the source from which lotuses are born, to use the classical eastern image.

The closer we get to our lived moments, the clearer it all becomes. The most basic instructions for meditation of the Buddha, are that to discover a real refuge in life we need to meet the body-ness of the body, the awareness of the mind, and the feelings within the feelings, without adding or manipulating or fabricating or projecting anything out of those experiences. “Live with yourself as your island, yourself as your refuge…..the Dhamma as your island, the Dhamma as your refuge….by staying aware of the body in and of itself – keenly clearly and mindfully – putting aside neediness and distress with reference to the world”. This is a classic guidance of practice, and besides the body it includes feelings, mind, and mental content. With a steady and penetrating gaze, we see our experience as a passing stream of phenomena, which just appear and disappear by themselves. They may be pleasant, they may not be pleasant, or they may be neither, but the diverse experiences can be the raw materials for a bigger view of reality. We find that we can live with more free space in our awareness, with less filtering of things. When the narratives, projections and constructions do occur, they tend to take up less room, and be less dense. Uncertainty can become a precious truth of existence, vulnerability can show us the beautiful fragility of all life, and witnessing can point to a subtle and limitless awareness that is the source of all that we can know.

The sky allows the clouds and is not disturbed by them. Both have their place in this existence. The ocean gives birth to the waves but is not disturbed by them. Both have their place. The mud gives rise to the lotus. They are linked together in the one ecology of existence. Samsara and Nirvana need each other. But point to a vaster and less personal universe which holds them both. And is their witness.

Emptiness

There is a deep understanding in human society that we construct our experiences of the world out of a primordial empty and endless source. This understanding is universal. For example, it is the basis of quantum physics in science, it is a key concept in Greek philosophy called Apeiron, and it certainly appears in the Jewish Kabbalah, and even in the Bible as in the quote above. It is dominant in Mahayana Buddhist teachings. However, in the early teachings of the Pali Canon the Buddha was very clear that emptiness as a concept is counterproductive and mistaken as it turns it into an iconic idea or belief which can collapse our practice. He said it was like catching a snake by the tail. The head will come round and bite you. The teachings are clear that if we have concepts of emptiness but still hold on to the belief of a separate self and an existing constructed world out there, enlightenment is impossible. Instead of emptiness we can use the English no-thing-ness, meaning the unfindability of any self-existing and separate ‘thing’ in this world.

It is knowable directly from the simplest meditative and contemplative practice. For example, if we see our hand with our eyes we can know it as a thing. But if we experience it from the inside, it becomes a flow of changing sensations without label or definition. A breath can be experienced as without boundary or controller. Gradually, with the practice of witnessing, we observe our experiences flowing past, like a line drawn on water, without start, finish, or clear boundaries and definitions. And there is in the end no-one in charge. We can begin to see that all experience appears like a dream emerging from an awareness that makes it possible. Like a white page that makes writing possible. Of course, more profound and subtle meditative experiences will open doors to a more infinite awareness that will reveal that we are part of a limitless world. For example, the formless jhanas, or big mind meditations.

Emptiness as a concept can however be useful in raising questions, energizing curiosity, and helping us to live with a sense of the unknown. There are many traditions based on deep questioning of what it is that we can really know, for example the koans in Zen practice. And the more we allow the questions to destabilize and dissolve the automatic constructions we make of ourselves and the world, like castles in the sand, we will move from knowledge to wisdom. The ordinary perceptions in the mind open out to a creative awareness. Here is a poem I wrote with some questions:

The Noble Prize (Inspired by Nagarjuna)

Am I ‘’the other”? Or not ‘the other”? Can someone tell me?

But is whoever tells me “someone else”? Or am I “someone else”?

Where is the other? I have been wanting to know for ages.

Show me the limits of ‘us’? I just cannot find them. They keep moving.

So if there are no limits is there an ‘us’?

Where is “there”? Take me to there. Take me to somewhere else.

If it isn’t also here, then God knows where it is.

Where is ‘’away”? I want to throw some rubbish ‘’away”. But I can’t find “away”.

Does each chamber of the heart label the other as ‘’other”? And accuse it of being right or left?

Where is the edge of awareness. I have been looking for it for a very long time.

Constantly giving up the search.

All these failures win us The Noble Prize

The Heart Sutta is the best known text that offers a radical view of how we live with the truth of no-thing-ness along with apparent forms that appear to the perception of all beings human or otherwise. Form, it says (along with all the other elements that make up our experience) are both themselves and empty. Form and emptiness are in an intimate discourse, as is the sky in discourse with the clouds.

The appearances of this world, this table, this computer, this thought, this story, this tree, seem to appear as such. But the dharma does not support any dualistic views that either the world and its content exists as we know it or there is nothing out there, and all is empty and void. Instead, the primary teaching of the dharma, Paticcasamuppada, shows that we and the world are changing experiences generated in the present by an immeasurable sea of influences and conditions. When we see a reflection of the moon on water, the moon both does and does not exist as such. It needs us to perceive it as such. The world and us are constantly creating each other. We sing the world into existence. We dance with change. We sense that the whole world and us are one vast field of aliveness. This creates a dramatic shift in our lives, helping us to live with a sense of lightness, freedom, flexibility, and fearlessness along with a loving heart that embraces it all.

הלב רועד לנוכח המלחמה, ההרג וההשמדה ברצועת עזה.

לא נוכל לעמוד מנגד אל מול אלימות נטולת רסן ושלילת אנושיות.

המחירים של האלימות עצומים - הפגיעה במיליוני התושבים בעזה, הסיכון הברור והמיידי לחיי חטופים וחיילים, וכמובן המחיר הנפשי של שיתוף פעולה עם מלחמה והרג במלחמה שאפילו מנהיגיה רואים בה מלחמת שווא.

לפעולה שכזו תהיינה השלכות ארוכות טווח מטלטלות על האיזור כולו ועל הנפש של כל מי שלוקח בהן חלק.

לצד האבידות העצומות בנפש בעזה, אנחנו שומעים על עוד ועוד חיילים שמתאבדים, על אלפי נפגעי פוסט טראומה ועל פציעה מוסרית.

חשוב לנו להביע דאגה עמוקה לנפשות של כולנו - אל לנו לעמוד מנגד. על כל אחד ואחת למצוא את הדרך המתאימה ביותר, לפעול כדי למנוע את האלימות וההרג.

עלינו לעשות ככל יכולתנו כדי לעצור את המלחמה, ובוודאי שאל לנו לקחת בה חלק.

זה הזמן לפעולה נכונה, זה הזמן לעצירה.

The heart trembles in the face of the war, the killing and the annihilation in the Gaza Strip.
We cannot stand by in the face of unbridled violence and the denial of humanity.

The costs of this violence are enormous — the harm to millions of residents in Gaza, the clear and immediate risk to the lives of hostages and soldiers, and of course the psychological price of being complicit in a war and in killing in a war that even its leaders regard as unjust.

Such action will have shattering long-term consequences for the entire region and for the souls of everyone who takes part.
Alongside the enormous loss of life in Gaza, we hear of more and more soldiers committing suicide, of thousands suffering from post-traumatic stress, and of moral injury.

It is important for us to express deep concern for all our lives — we must not stand aside. Each person must find the most appropriate way to act to prevent the violence and the killing.

We must do everything in our power to stop the war, and certainly, we must not take part in it.

This is the time for right action; this is the time to stop.

The Noble Eightfold Path

There are a galaxy of spiritual and religious teachings in this human world, and I have met and explored many of them in my wanderings. Yet in my view, the Buddhadharma is unparalleled in its clear, deep, and practical teachings on Enlightenment, which is “excellent at the beginning, excellent in the middle, and excellent at the end”, and has kept me loyal to it for the last 50 years. Awakening, Nirvana, is a truth, and not an unrealistic ideal, and the way to it has eight aspects or tracks, which is actually our whole life. It is all too easy to get stuck on rather exclusive tracks to liberation, without noticing what we excluded. For example we can assume that it is all about deep meditative stillness (samadhi), or transformative insights, or a pure ethical life, or closeness to deities. After one intense exploration of subtle aspects of consciousness with a leading Buddhist abbot, he turned to me and said: “yet, don’t underestimate the power of conduct”. Realistically, we usually start with one or more of the eight as gateways. Mindfulness has become the gateway for many within modern daily life, concentration and samadhi can be the gateway in meditation centres, action and intention in Buddhist monasteries, but gradually all the eight become one great highway. So here are the eight, with their original Pali name. It is not easy to translate ‘samma’ which is close to the English ‘summit’, or fruition of the practice, normally translated as ‘right’, so here I have used a few different translations below.

1. Sammā-diṭṭhi (Fully Developed and Wise View)

2. Sammā-saṅkappa (Wise Intention and Thought)

3. Sammā-vācā (Wise and Helpful Communication)

4. Sammā-kammanta (Rightness of Action)

5. Sammā-ājīva (Harmonious and Ethical Livelihood)

6. Sammā-vāyāma (Well-Developed Energy and Effort)

7. Sammā-sati (Refined and Cultivated Presence and Awareness)

8. Sammā-samādhi (Well-Developed Calmness and Concentration)

Each one is an exquisite, rich path of teachings and transformation. For example when we speak, is our speech kind, helpful, true and appropriate, and does not increase ill-will, confusion or distraction? It is clear that to purify our communication to this extent is a life teaching and needs all the other aspects of the path, such as awareness, sensitivity, calmness and intention. Is our speech coming from inner silence or inner agitation? The field of practice is clearly daily life, although we can certainly be helped by choosing some beneficial conditions, such as a retreat, for a while. All the eight feed and support each other, and gradually they will all become recruited into the journey, and they will tell us when and how we have gone out of balance. Dukkha, or difficult experiences, will arise, and help us identify how we have gone out of balance. For example if our sense of ethics and activism is not tempered by some meditative calm, steadiness and the wisdom of interbeing or hint of the infinite, we can find ourselves angry, superior, righteous, frustrated etc. If wisdom is not grounded in right action in daily life (such as cooking and gardening!) we can become a somewhat miserable philosopher! There is a famous Zen parable of a student who asked the abbot: “Master, what is the highest practice?” The Master answered: “It is to sit in meditation”. “But Master, I never see you sitting in meditation. You are keeping the accounts, teaching, welcoming guests, cleaning, cooking.” “It is true,” the Master said, “I am cleaning, cooking, teaching, keeping accounts, welcoming guests, and so on, but I am never not sitting in meditation.”

In the end they all keep feeding Samma-ditthi, a liberated view of ourselves and the world, through which the Eightfold Path makes us Noble. It is the deep contentment of a life point of view, where life lives itself through us, and we no longer need to struggle against circumstances. All present moment experiences become reminders of, or raw materials for, Liberation. Tending those close to me, tending the garden, tending the animals, tending my body, tending my awareness, or tending fractured human society, become the same acts of heartful awareness. The difference between sacred and profane, Heaven and Earth, Nirvana and Samsara, dissolve away in those boundless caring moments of life. That is, in the end, Samma Ditthi. Here is a postscript:

It is a powerful reminder that both illumination and deep happiness are sown within us in the parallel maturity of both wisdom and integrity

סכסוך על סף ביתנו. עזה ומעבר לה. מהי אחריותנו?

אני כותב את הדברים הבאים ממקום מגוריי בגליל שבישראל. כולנו כאן, בכל רחבי האזור, שרויים בעיצומו של כאב חסר תקדים, חוסר ודאות ובלבול. חמאס הרג אזרחים ישראלים לא חמושים ב־7 באוקטובר, בהתפרצות של אלימות מתועבת. צה"ל הגיב בדרך שאינה כה שונה אך בקנה מידה גדול בהרבה. חלקים נרחבים בעזה נהרסו בצורה אכזרית, ומספר עצום של נשים וילדים פלסטינים, כמו גם רבים אחרים בכל האזור, נהרגו או סובלים מטראומה ופציעות לכל החיים. אוכלוסיית עזה גוועת כעת ברעב. נולדה עוד דור של פלסטינים וישראלים מוכי טראומה. ישראל עצמה נראית אבודה בתוך חושך מוחלט, סוטה מעקרונות היסוד שלה ומערכיה המוסריים, בלי מצפן שיכוון אותה. דוגמה לכך היא הסירוב לאפשר לעיתונאים זרים להיכנס לעזה, ההרג של עיתונאים מקומיים ושליטתה של התקשורת הישראלית, המדווחת לעיתים רחוקות על ממדי הסבל והחורבן שנגרמים כעת לכלל תושבי עזה, ומתמקדת בעיקר בחטופים. רק העיתון הישראלי "הארץ" ממשיך לדווח באומץ על המציאות, והוא מתויג כאנטישמי – כמו גם חלק גדול מהתקשורת הזרה והאו״ם.

קיימת אשליה מסוכנת בכל הצדדים, כאילו אלימות שכזו היא הדרך לביטחון ולרווחה. אך האם ניתן לטפח אושר והרמוניה באמצעות זריעת זרעים של היפוכם המוחלט? הכחשה היא אחד הסימפטומים של האשליה הזו. למשל, ההכחשה שבשם הביטחון, ישראל נמצאת כעת במצב של חוסר ביטחון חמור מתמיד, עם רקטות שנוחתות בתל אביב ואויבים, ממשיים או מדומיינים, מכל עבר. בולטת בחסרונה ההתבוננות על אופיים של הזרעים הנזרעים כרגע ומה עשויים להיות פירותיהם בהמשך הדרך. במקום שהאלימות תהיה קריאת השכמה, האזור כולו הולך מתוך שינה לקראת סכסוך אינסופי.

אז איך המצב יכול היה להיראות בלי תגובתיות עיוורת שכזו? המלחמה הנוכחית בעזה היא כמו תסמינים חריפים ומסכני חיים שמתפרצים לאחר שמחלה כרונית עמוקה הוזנחה. דורות של כיבוש ודיכוי, ושל היעדר מתן אפשרות לפלסטינים לעצמאות ולתחושת תקווה; דורות של אלימות ושנאה כלפי ישראלים ויהודים שגרמו להם להאמין שאין תקווה לחיות בשלום ובביטחון. אלימות באה בשרשראות. כל מעשה אלים יוצר את התנאים, ובעיקר את האקלים הרגשי, למעשה הבא. כל מעשה אלים מכוון את התודעה הקולקטיבית להאמין ששלום הוא בלתי אפשרי, ושהאלימות היא האפשרות היחידה שנותרה. אך לא נדרשת חכמה רבה כדי לראות כיצד התהליך הזה מתרחש ולפרום אותו בכיוון אחר. אפשר ליצור שרשראות של עשיית שלום, לחפש חלונות של הזדמנויות לתקשורת, לדיאלוג ולהבנה של "האחר". וכאשר זה לא נעשה, קשה לטעון ש״אין ברירה״.

יש ברירה. ניתן ללכת בדרך אחרת. בדרך שבה, מניסיוני, ברוב המקרים "האחר" ירגיש הקלה וירוץ לשבת איתך על כוס קפה. לאורך שנים רבות של מפגשים ודיאלוגים עם פלסטינים וישראלים באזור תמיד נדהמתי מהכמיהה העקבית לחיים משותפים בשלום, ומהייאוש לנוכח המרחק מהמציאות. פעם אחת, למשל, השתתפתי בחתונה בגדה המערבית ומצאתי את עצמי מוקף בכ-300 גברים פלסטינים, רובם צעירים. הייתי הישראלי הלא־פלסטיני היחיד בחתונה. במשך כמה דקות איש לא הבחין בי, אלא שאז לפתע כמה מהיושבים לידי שמו אליי לב ושאלו אותי אם אני ישראלי ויהודי. עניתי שכן. באותו רגע כל הגברים שם פנו אליי והתחילו לקרוא: "ביס, ביס". בתחילה לא הבנתי את משמעות קריאתם, אך אז התברר לי שכולם צועקים "Peace, Peace!" – ("שלום, שלום!"). התרגשתי מכך עמוקות. ואכן יש לכך תקדימים. אני כותב דברים אלו מהגליל, שבו יהודים ישראלים, מוסלמים, נוצרים, ערבים ודרוזים חיים ועובדים יחד. יש מחויבות ברורה של כל הקהילות לא לסכן את חיי היומיום השלווים יחסית, היקרים כל כך, על אף הצלקות שכל אחד נושא.

אי־אלימות אינה בהכרח אי עשייה. היא ניסיון אנרגטי לייצר אקלים אחר. היא דורשת כוח ויציבות – תכונות שמאפיינות משכיני שלום אמיתיים. זה לא תמיד קל. לשלום יש מחיר. כך, למשל, ייתכן שישראל תצטרך לקחת אחריות על הפליטים שיצרה מאז 1948; ייתכן שהפלסטינים יצטרכו לשחרר את הנרטיבים הכואבים של עקירה וקורבנות. מהטמה גנדי אמר: "אי־אלימות היא נשקם של החזקים". אנחנו תמיד יכולים לעשות את הבחירה הזו.

ראשית, עלינו לפגוש ולשחרר את הנטייה שלנו עצמנו לייצר אויבים ולבחור צד. קל מדי להאשים שליטים, קבוצות, או פוליטיקאים, או לקחת צד. בעד או נגד פלסטינים, בעד או נגד ישראל. אם נרצה לבחור צד, ניתן לבחור את הצד של האנושיות. כך, למשל, בצעדת שלום גדולה אחת רצו הפלסטינים ללכת מאחורי הדגל הפלסטיני. ישבנו עם זקני הקהילה שלהם וביקשנו מהם להסביר לאנשיהם שאיש מאיתנו לא מעונין ללכת מאחורי אף דגל – לא פלסטיני ולא ישראלי. לבסוף, כולם הסכימו ללכת עם דגלים לבנים. צבע התחבושות! ה"אחר" הוא נקודת מבט שאנו מחזיקים בתודעתנו – לא במציאות. האם נוכל לדמיין מבט כוללני, מעבר לצדדים, שמבין כמה טוב יכול לצמוח מהיחד?

ייתכן שכל מה שקראתם עד כה לא נשמע לכם הגיוני. זה מצער אך מובן. אנו עלולים להיות מוצפים מדי בכעס ובמתח מכדי לשקול מפגש עם "האחר" מעבר למחיצות. ייתכן אף שבתיאוריה אנו מאמינים בשלום ובקיום משותף, אך כעת חשים יותר מידי זעם ולחץ. בכוחנו לפתח יכולות חדשות כדי לעבוד עם מצב דברים זה. וייתכן שהאחריות שלנו היא לפתח את response-ability שלנו – את היכולת להגיב באופן מודע.

משימה מיידית אחת היא להגן על עצמנו מפני הישאבות – לזהות מתי תשומת הלב שלנו "נחטפת" על ידי תקשורת, עודף מידע, עמדות נחרצות או פשוט רעש. נוכל להרגיש שאין לנו עוד מושג מה חשוב ומה לא מי אנחנו באמת. שאנו נלכדים בתיבת תהודה. במצב שכזה אפשר להנמיך את עוצמת זרם הדברים הנכנסים פנימה ובמקביל למצוא דרכים לזכור את התודעה העצמאית שלנו ואת האדם הגדול שאנחנו. לחזור לחיים דרך מעשים פשוטים של חיים ואהבה שמחזירים אותנו לקרקע ואוספים את עצמנו מחדש. חייתי כמעט שנתיים תחת ירי רקטות מלבנון ועם קול התותחים היוצאים מישראל בכיוון ההפוך, אך הקפדתי מדי יום לעבד את הגינה, לגדל מזון ולטפל בבעלי החיים של משפחות שברחו מהאזור. סאטיש קומאר, אשר היה משכין שלום ופעיל אקולוגי בלתי נלאה כל חייו, הקפיד לבשל ארוחות צהרים עם אחרים. וינסטון צ'רצ'יל נהג לבנות קירות אבן כשהיה שר האוצר. אם אנו מאכילים אחרים, אנו בעצם מאכילים גם את עצמנו.

קונפליקטים מתקיימים על בסיס פחד, חוסר ביטחון, כעס או רצון לנקמה – רגשות שמובילים לקונצנזוס הצועק שעלינו להגן על עצמנו. אך אלו רגשות אישיים ולאומיים, שלרוב מלובים על ידי תקשורת ומנהיגים פוליטיים. פחד וחוסר ביטחון אינם בעיה כשלעצמם, אך הם הופכים מסוכנים כאשר הם מתקבעים כנרטיבים בלתי נשלטים – כמו ״אנחנו הקורבן״ – שמצדיקים את האלימות. אם נראה בבהירות את הרגשות כאשר הם סוחפים אותנו כיחידים ובמרחב החברתי נוכל לטפל בהם ולא לאפשר להם להפוך לפצצות ורקטות. האם נוכל להתמודד עם הפחדים והנרטיבים שהם מולידים בתוכנו, במקום לנסות להשמיד את מקורותיהם בחוץ?

בימים אלה קל מאוד להיסחף בתחושות של חוסר אונים, בלבול או כעס – רגשות שמושכים את השטיח מתחת לרגלינו ומשאירים אותנו מותשים וחסרי כוח. אך גם את הרגשות הללו אפשר לראות באמפתיה ובהבנה, לתת להם לחלוף בלי להעניק להם שליטה עלינו ועל מעשינו. אנחנו יכולים לנשק אותם כשהם חולפים על פנינו ובמקביל לעודד את ההפך – טוב־לב. להתחבר לטוב הראשוני שבליבנו, ולדעת שחמלה אינה בעלת כתובת אחת. היא כוללת אותנו ואחרים, משום שכולנו יצורים פגיעים. נוכל לעזור קודם לקרובים אלינו, ואז להרחיב את גבולות ליבנו. לתת לחמלה להדריך אותנו ולתת לנו אנרגיה לפעול בתבונה בעולם, בכל מקום שבו יש לנו אפשרות – וכך לסייע ליצירת התנאים לחיים של שלום ושלמות לכולם.

אם תשאלו מהו הכישרון החשוב ביותר להפחתת סכסוך, ניכור ואלימות, כנראה שזו היכולת להקשיב. כשאנחנו בעימות או מחלוקת, עולמנו מצטמצם ואנו נוטים להגיב בכעס, ווכחנות, הגנתיות ועוד. ההקשבה חותכת דרך כל אלה. היא מאפשרת לחוש את האדם שמולנו, להבין מהיכן הוא בא, להביט מאחורי עיניו, להקשיב לסיפורו – ובו בזמן להקשיב גם לקול הפנימי שלנו. האדם שמולנו יחוש בכבוד שאנו חולקים לו, ולעיתים קרובות ירד מעמדת ההגנה שלו – ושרשרת התגובתיות תיקטע. עשינו זאת פעמים אינספור בסדנאות שנקראו "טרנספורמציה של סבל", עם קבוצות שונות המצויות בסכסוך, במיוחד ישראלים ופלסטינים. היה ברור שהבעת כוונות או קריאות לשלום אינן מתקרבות ביעילותן להקשבה עמוקה לחוויות היומיום והמאבקים של כל אחד מהצדדים. להיות בנעליו של האחר, כפי שאומר הטקסט הבודהיסטי הקלאסי של שנטידווה, זו משימה מקודשת. באחד מהדיאלוגים הרבים אמר נער פלסטיני: ״תמיד חשבתי שישראלים הם רק חיילים ושהלב האנושי עשוי מאבן. עכשיו, לאחר שהקשבתי לסיפורים שלכם, אני יודע שיש גם רכות בלב האנושי – וזה יישאר איתי כל חיי״.

בסופו של דבר אנו עומדים מול השאלה: מה אני יכול לעשות? מהי הדרך הנכונה לפעול? מהו המעשה האתי בזמנים כאלה? החלטות וכיוונים כאלה אינם פשוטים לעולם, והפעולות שלנו, אשר הן לרוב ספונטניות, תלויות בכל החכמה והלב שפיתחנו לאורך חיינו. בשל כך, האחריות שלנו היא לפתח מודעות, חמלה, חזון רחב ולב חכם במהלך חיינו, כדי שכאשר ניתקל בסכסוך או באלימות נבחר בדרך שגורמת למינימום נזק, לנו ולאחרים.

אנשים שואלים אותי לעיתים רבות, מה היית עושה אם מישהו היה בא לביתך עם נשק כדי להרוג אותך? היית הורג אותו קודם אם היית יכול? תשובתי היא שאין לי מושג. הייתי מנסה להגן על החיים – גם על שלי וגם על שלו. לפעמים זה ברור – למשל ביחס לעזה. ברור שעכשיו הזמן לעזרה ראשונה. לסיוע הומניטרי. אנשים אומרים לעיתים שהמצב מורכב מאוד וזה משתק אותם מלעשות מעשה אתי. אך זה לא מורכב לא להרעיב ילדים או לא להרוג אזרחים לא חמושים – מכל צד. פשוט לא עושים זאת. מעבר לכך, אנו פועלים בהתאם להזדמנויות שנפתחות, גדולות או קטנות. אנו עונים לקריאות שנוגעות בליבנו החומל. ואין צורך למדוד. כל מה שאנו עושים יוצר גל שיוצא אל העולם ועושה משהו, כמו אפקט הפרפר.ערכנו שורה ארוכה של צעדות שלום שקטות ברחבי האזור – ישראלים ופלסטינים, יהודים וערבים – שהדגימו מהי אווירת שלום דווקא בזמנים שבהם היא נשכחה. האם זה שינה משהו? כן. כמו נר – שמביא אור קטן, אך כזה שעושה הבדל אמיתי בחדר חשוך לגמרי.

War on our Doorstep. Gaza and Elsewhere. What is our Responsibility?

I write this from Galilee, Israel where I live. All of us here in the region are in the midst of unprecedented pain, uncertainty, and confusion. Hamas killed unarmed Israeli civilians on October 7th, in an explosion of abhorrent violence. The IDF reacted by doing the same as Hamas but much worse. Much of Gaza has been wantonly destroyed and a huge number of Palestinian women and children, as well as many others in the whole region, have been killed, or suffer lifelong trauma and injury. The population of Gaza are now starving. Another generation of traumatized Palestinians and Israelis has been created. Israel itself seems utterly lost in darkness, drifting without its founding moral principles and values, and without any compass. An example is the refusal to allow foreign journalists into Gaza, killing of local ones and the control of the Israeli media, which rarely reports on the extent of the suffering and devastation now being inflicted on the entire Gaza population, and focuses mainly on the hostages. Only the Israeli paper Haaretz continues to courageously report the truth of things, and it is labelled antisemitic, as is much of the foreign media, and the UN.

There is a deluded conviction on all sides that such violence will be the way to security and well-being. But can you grow happiness and harmony by planting the seeds of their exact opposite? Denial is one of the symptoms of this delusion, for example denial that in the name of security, Israel is now more insecure than ever before, with rockets landing in Tel Aviv, and enemies, real or imagined, everywhere. There is a dangerous lack of reflection on what seeds are actually being sown right now, and what the fruit might be further downstream. The violence could have been a wake-up call. Instead the region seems to be sleepwalking into endless conflict with no end in sight.

So how might it look without this blind reactivity? The current Gaza war is like the acute life-threatening symptoms that erupt after a deep seated chronic sickness is allowed to fester. There has been generations of occupation and suppression and failure to allow Palestinians their independence and a sense of hope. Violence goes in chains. Each act of violence creates the conditions, especially the emotional climate, for the next. Each act of violence conditions the collective consciousness to feel that peace is impossible and only violence is left. But it doesn’t take much wisdom to see this process as it happens, and unroll it in another direction. It is possible to create chains of peace-making, to look for windows of opportunity for communication, dialogue and understanding of ‘the other’. Where this is not done, it can hardly be said that “there is no choice”.

There is. To take another road. In nearly all cases ‘the other’ will be relieved and run to sit down with you over a cup of coffee. Over many years of meetings and dialogues with Palestinians and Israelis in the region I am amazed at the consistent longing for peaceful co-existence, and the despair at how it seems so far away. There are precedents. I am writing this from the Galilee, where Israeli Jews, Muslims, Christians, Arabs and Druze are living and working together. There is a clear commitment by all communities not to risk the preciousness of a basically peaceful daily life, despite the scars carried by many. Non-violence does not mean doing nothing. It means an energetic attempt to create another climate. This requires strength and steadiness, qualities which are shown by genuine peacemakers. It is not always easy. Peace may have to be paid for. For example Israel may need to take responsibility for the refugees it created since 1948. The Palestinians may need to let go of their painful narratives of displacement and victimhood. Mahatma Ghandi said: “Non-violence is the weapon of the strong”. We can always make this choice.

The Middle East is a hotspot. It seems it always has been. However the level of conflict, divisiveness and insecurity is rising on a planetary level. It may be urgent to inquire what can I do in these times, and what is my responsibility, whether to what is happening in the Middle East or Ukraine or on our own doorstep? I have been doing peace work for many years in the region along with courageous, heartful, and compassionate people on both sides, who still go out and tirelessly show that there are other ways to live together. I would like to offer some insights from the front lines that might help us to meet conflict where ever we are.

Firstly we ourselves can meet and drop our own tendencies to create enemies and to take sides. It is too easy to blame specific autocrats or groups, or the politicians, or end up taking sides such as Pro or Anti Palestinian or Pro or Anti-Israel. If we want to take a side it can be the side of humanness. In one large peace walk the Palestinians wanted to walk behind the Palestinian flag. We sat with the elders of their community and asked them to explain that none of us were willing to walk behind any flag, neither Palestinian nor Israeli. All agreed to walk with white flags. The colour of bandages! The ‘’other’’ is a point of view that we hold in our mind. It is not in reality. Can we imagine an inclusive view beyond sides, that knows how much benefit there will be from togetherness.

Right now, it may be that what you read above doesn’t make any sense. It is unfortunate but understandable, that we may be too triggered to even consider meeting ‘the other’ across the boundaries. We may theoretically believe in peace and co-existence but right now feel too much anger and stress. But we can develop new capacities to work with the situation. Perhaps our responsibility is to develop our response-ability.

One immediate task can be to protect ourselves from being swept away - to know when our attention is being hijacked by media, over-information, strong views, and the sheer volume of noise. We can feel that we have no idea any more what is important and who we really are. We get lost inside an echo chamber. We can turn down the volume of stuff coming in. And at the same time find ways to remember our independent mind and the big person that we are. To come back to our life through simple acts of life and love that bring us down to ground and recollect ourselves. I have been living under rockets from the Lebanon and with the daily sound of Israeli artillery going in the opposite direction for nearly 2 years. But I made sure that every day I dig the garden and grow my food, and look after the animals of families that had fled the area. Satish Kumar was a lifelong and tireless peacemaker and ecological activist. But he made sure that he cooked lunch together with others. Winston Churchill used to build stone walls while he was Chancellor of the Exchequer. If we feed others we are actually also feeding ourselves.

Conflicts are sustained by fear, insecurity, anger or revenge, which lead to a consensus that shouts that we must defend ourselves. But these are individual and national emotions, often stoked up by media and political leaders. Fear and insecurity are not problems in themselves, but are dangerous when they become fixed as uncontrollable narratives such as being the victim, which then justifies the violence. If we clearly see these emotions that sweep through us individually and the social space, then we can take care of them, and not allow them to be converted into bombs and rockets. Can we deal with the fears and their ensuing narratives internally, rather than attempting to destroy the source of them externally?

We can easily get carried away these days by feelings of helplessness, confusion, or anger, emotions that can pull the rug from under us and leave us drained and powerless. These emotions too can be seen with sympathy and understanding, and let them pass without giving them authority over us and our actions. And we can encourage the opposite – kindness. Connect with the basic primal goodness in our hearts, and know that compassion does not have one address. It includes ourselves and others as all of us are vulnerable beings. We can help other close to us first and then expand the limits of our hearts. And let it direct and energize us to act skilfully in the world, wherever we have an opportunity, helping to create the conditions for a peaceful and fulfilling life for all.

If you ask what is the single most important skill and capacity that reduces conflict, alienation and violence, it is probably the power to listen. If we are in conflict or dispute our world often narrows and we might respond with anger, argumentation, defensiveness and so on. Listening cuts through all that. We sense the other person, sense where they are coming from, look behind their eyes, listen to their story, and at the same time listen to our own voice and inner responses. The other person feels the respect and will often come down off their defensive position and the chain of reactivity can be broken. We have done this endless times in what we called Transformation of Suffering workshops with groups in conflict, especially Israelis and Palestinians. It was very clear that intentions or calls for peace were not nearly as effective as deep listening to the daily life experiences and struggles of each other. Being in the shoes of the other, says the classic Buddhist text by Shantideva, is a sacred task. In one of the many dialogues a Palestinian boy said: “I always thought Israelis were just soldiers and the human heart was made of stone. Now listening to your stories I know that there is also softness in the human heart and that will stay with me all my life”.

In the end we are faced with the question, so what can I do? What is the right way for me to act? What is ethical in these times? Such decisions and directions are never easy, and our actions, though often spontaneous, do depend on all the wisdom and heart that we have built over our life. For that reason it is our responsibility to develop our awareness, empathy, big vision and wise heart during our life so that if we are confronted with conflict or violence we will choose a path that causes minimum harm to self and other. People aften ask me, what would you do if someone came to your house with a gun to kill you? Would you kill them first if you could? The answer is that I have no idea. I would try and protect life, both mine and the other. Sometimes it is clear – for example in relation to Gaza, now would be the time for First Aid. Humanitarian assistance. People often say that the situation is very complex and that paralyses them from acting ethically. It is not complex to starve kids or kill unarmed civilians on any side. You just don’t. Apart from that, though, we act according to what opportunities arise, big or small. We answer the calls that touch our compassionate heart. And we have no need to measure. Everything we do makes a wave that goes out in the world, and does something, like the ‘Butterfly Effect’. We have led a large number of quiet peace walks throughout the region, Israelis and Palestinians, Jews and Arabs, modelling what peacefulness was like at times when it was forgotten. Did it make a difference? Yes, like a candle, that brings a small light yet one that makes a real difference in a totally dark room.

It took 4 brave, persistent and heartful mothers to extricate the Israeli Army from where it had become stuck in Lebanon in 2000. Now the IDF is in an even more disastrous mess creating immense suffering to a whole people as well as to itself. Mothers! Where are you?

Where is the urge to feed others not starve them, to listen to the cry of others like listening to the cry of our own children, to tend towards a kind heart and not a heart of stone, to embrace and connect to nature rather than being afraid of it, to trust rather than control, to love life and know its gifts? Perhaps most important of all at these times, is the female intuitive wisdom that understands how to sow wholesome seeds everywhere. To call this our female ‘side’ is dualistic and simplistic, but it does help as a metaphor, especially now when the male side has become dominant and overwhelming and threatens to destroy us.

There is unthinkable suffering being inflicted on the people of Gaza, and at the same time the people of Ukraine and other places. A huge number of women and children, as well as young soldiers, are killed, or suffer lifelong trauma and injury, because of the blind reactive anger of old men such as Netanyahu, Ali Khamenei, Trump, Putin, as the UK newspaper “The Guardian” put it, and younger ones too. In the name of security, Israel is now more insecure than ever before, with rockets landing in Tel Aviv sent by implacable wounded enemies. Another generation of traumatized Palestinians and Israelis has been created. Israel itself seems utterly lost, drifting without its founding moral principles and values, without any compass and without God.

Evil is not a word that is used in the Buddhist path. But delusion and blindness certainly is, and there is no other word to describe the view that such violence will be the way to peace and well-being. You can’t grow happiness and harmony by planting the seeds of their exact opposite. Denial is one of the symptoms of this delusion, for example denial of responsibility for Palestinian refugees from 1948 until today, or denial that the way humans act is making the planet uninhabitable. Another sign of delusion is the fear of reflecting on the costs of actions further downstream. One more is belief in great distracting systems that obscure what is important. Hi-Tech despite its almost magical enchantment, may be one of those smokescreens that obscures the truth of our nature and of this extraordinary uncontrollable wild life. On the delusory barriers which we hide behind are written: love is dangerous.

Such blindness causes endless suffering and here are two bizarre examples where women are the victims. 6 million women were burnt as witches in Europe in Medieval times. Their crime? They were skilled at healing, cooking, and reading the signals streaming from nature. Rachel, my wife, wrote an MA Thesis about a Talmudic story of how Shimon ben Shetach, the head of the Sanhedrin, commanded that 80 women be executed in one day in Ashkelon accusing them of witchcraft. Rachel showed that their magic was actually their skill in cooking which the rabbis found so scary that they had the women killed.

Both the male and the female and indeed any side of us will be destructive if allowed to take over. Our inherent beauty is the source which is bigger than any of these dimensions and can hold them all with care and balance, like an ecology that is healthy. The journey of harmony and transformation within ourselves, our society and the planet, is absolutely dependent on giving space to all the various colours of being and holding them all tenderly. They can join in permanent embrace and discourse, like in picture above of two grandmothers: Rachel my wife, and Chayat, a local Bedouin. The Sanskrit word sattva is a good word for the inner harmony that liberates huge well-being and freedom. Buddhist practice includes a wisdom of the heart that is transcendent and yet essentially nutritional, wholesome (kusala) and kind.

Thankfully perfection and great love is not only inherent in existence but actually holds the whole thing together, and it cannot be supressed or forgotten for long. It runs through everything even though we sometimes can’t see it. Waves of appreciation, of healing and peace, always follow behind the waves of despair and loss, in the shape-shifting reality. Rebirths are constantly and immediately happening. There is hope when things look hopeless because both life and awareness always know how to start fresh. Murderers can become enlightened teachers, as in the famous Buddhist story of Angulimala or the Talmudic story of Resh Lakish. A good example is the Emperor Ashoka (268-232 BC) who was a violent ruler, until he met the dharma and created a huge and successful empire based on dharma, non-violence and kindness. Though we cannot assume that a radical change will happen just when we think it cannot get any worse, the consolation is that even a bit of kindness can go a long way and allow some clarity and compassion, some give and take. And change happens from unexpected directions. Your inner female can give constant rebirth to goodness. Remember it! Manifest it right now!

היכן הדחף להזין אחרים ולא להרעיבם, להקשיב לזעקתם כאילו הייתה זעקת ילדינו, לטפח לב רך במקום לב של אבן, להתחבר לטבע ולא לפחד ממנו, לתת אמון במקום לשלוט, לאהוב את החיים ולהכיר בטוב הגלום בהם? אולי בימים אלו החכמה הנשית האינטואיטיבית, היודעת כיצד לזרוע זרעים טובים בכל מקום נחוצה יותר מכל. מובן שלכנות חוכמה זו כ"צד הנשי" שבתוכנו הוא תיאור פשטני ודואלי – אך הוא עשוי לשרת אותנו כמשל, במיוחד בימים אלו, כאשר ה"צד הגברי" כל כך דומיננטי, שולט ומאיים לכלות את כולנו.

סבל בלתי נתפס נגרם בימים אלו לאנשים בעזה, ובאותה שעה גם לאנשים באוקראינה ובעוד מקומות ברחבי העולם. אינספור נשים וילדים, לצד חיילים צעירים, נהרגים או סוחבים עמם טראומות ופציעות לכל החיים – בשל כעס עיוור ותגובתי של שליטים מזדקנים כמו נתניהו, עלי חמנאי, טראמפ ופוטין, כפי שתואר בעיתון הבריטי ה"גרדיאן", וגם של צעירים מהם. בשם הביטחון, ישראל הפכה לבלתי בטוחה מאי פעם – טילים נוחתים בתל אביב מידי אויבים פצועים ובלתי ניתנים לפיוס. דור נוסף של פלסטינים וישראלים נולד אל תוך טראומה. ישראל עצמה נראית כמי שאיבדה כיוון, נודדת ללא עקרונות היסוד והערכים המוסריים שלה, ללא מצפן וללא אלוהים.

במילה "רשע" אין שימוש בדרך הבודהיסטית – אך למילים אשליה ועיוורון בהחלט יש, ואין דרך אחרת לתאר את האמונה לפיה אלימות שכזו תסלול את הדרך לשלום ורווחה. אי אפשר להצמיח אושר והרמוניה מזרעים של ההפך הגמור מהם. הכחשה היא סימן מובהק לאשליה זו. למשל, הכחשת האחריות לגורל הפליטים הפלסטינים מאז 1948 ועד היום; או הכחשה על כך שהתנהגות בני האדם הופכת את כדור הארץ לבלתי ניתן למחיה. אחד הסימנים לאשליה הוא הפחד מלהתבונן על המחיר העתידי של מעשינו. סימן נוסף הוא האמונה במערכות גדולות הממסכות את מה שחשוב באמת. ההיי־טק, למשל, למרות קסמו הכמעט על טבעי, אולי מהווה מסך עשן המסתיר את טבענו האמיתי ואת טבעם של החיים הפראיים והבלתי ניתנים לשליטה. על גבי חומות האשליה שמאחוריהן אנו מסתתרים, חרוטות מילים כמו: "האהבה מסוכנת".

העיוורון הזה יוצר סבל אינסופי ולהלן שני מקרים מוזרים במיוחד, שבהם נשים הן הקורבן:
שישה מיליון נשים נשרפו באירופה בימי הביניים על כך שנחשדו כמכשפות. מה היה פשען? שהן ידעו לרפא, לבשל, ולהקשיב לאותות הזורמים מהטבע. רחל, רעייתי, כתבה תזה לתואר שני על סיפור תלמודי שבו שמעון בן שטח, ראש הסנהדרין, ציווה להוציא להורג שמונים נשים באשקלון ביום אחד באשמת מעשי כשפים. רחל הראתה כי ״הכשפים״ המדוברים היו למעשה כישוריהן הקולינריים אשר הרבנים מצאו כמפחידים עד כדי שהם גזרו את דינן למוות.

הצד הגברי והנשי שבנו כאחד – ולמעשה כל צד שבנו – עלולים להיות הרסניים אם יישלטו ללא רסן. אך יופיינו הפנימי, הטהור, הוא מקור גדול מהכל המסוגל להחזיק את כל הממדים באיזון ובחמלה, כמו מערכת אקולוגית בריאה. המסע להרמוניה ולטרנספורמציה בתוכנו, בחברה ובכדור הארץ – תלוי במידה רבה ביכולתנו לתת מקום לכל הצבעים של הקיום, ולהחזיקם ברכות. הם יכולים לשכון יחד בשיח ובחיבוק מתמשך, כמו בתמונה למעלה של שתי הסבתות: רחל, רעייתי, וח'יאת, בדואית מהאזור. המילה הסנסקריטית "סטווה" (sattva) מבטאת היטב את ההרמוניה הפנימית הזאת, שהיא מקור לשחרור, בריאות, ורווחה. התרגול הבודהיסטי כולל תבונה של הלב שהיא בעת ובעונה אחת נשגבת ומזינה, מיטיבה (kusala) ורכה.

וטוב לדעת – השלמות והאהבה הגדולה אינן רק טבועות בקיום, אלא אף מחזיקות את הכול יחד. אי אפשר לדכאן או לשכחן לאורך זמן. הן קיימות בכל דבר, גם כשאיננו רואים אותן. גלים של ריפוי, שלום והכרת תודה מגיעים תמיד אחרי גלים של ייאוש ואובדן – במציאות המשתנה תמיד. לידות מחדש קורות כל הזמן, בכל רגע. יש תקווה גם כאשר נדמה שאין – כי החיים עצמם, כמו גם התודעה, יודעים תמיד להתחיל מחדש. רוצחים יכולים להפוך למורי דרך מוארים – כמו בסיפורו של אנגולימאלה הבודהיסטי, או בסיפור התלמודי על ריש לקיש. דוגמא טובה לכך היא הקיסר אשוקה, ששלט במאה ה-3 לפני הספירה, שהיה ידוע כשליט אכזרי, עד אשר פגש את הדהרמה והפך למנהיג נאור שבנה אימפריה עצומה על יסודות של אי־אלימות וטוב לב. אף שאיננו יכולים להניח ששינוי רדיקלי יתרחש בדיוק כשנראה שאין עוד תקווה –די גם בקורטוב של טוב לב כדי לפנות מקום לאיכויות של בהירות, חמלה ויחסי גומלין. ושינויים – הם תמיד באים מכיוונים בלתי צפויים. אימהות! עזרו לנו לזכור את הנשיות שבנו שמולידה שוב ושוב את הטוב שבעולם.

A Wholesome Life in a Contaminated World

50 years ago, when I was teaching biochemistry at Benaras Hindu University in Varanasi, I had a small room on Assi Ghat that opened straight onto the banks of the Ganges. I would leap into the sacred river for a swim every morning despite all the health warnings. One day, there was a knock on the door that changed my life. A boy stood there and told me that if I employed his mother as a cook, I would be supporting 2 families. I couldn’t refuse, though I didn’t need a cook. But then I learnt that she prepared the meals according to the body constitution, health needs, vulnerabilities and tendencies of each person, as well as the season, the weather, what was fresh in the market, and which foods and spices go together for digestion, taste and aesthetics. All from tradition. A huge knowledge that is forgotten. Then and there I shifted my professional direction and for the next 40 years worked to remember and restore traditional holistic health wisdom.

We unroll the carpet in front of us, intoxicated by progress, and don’t notice how we roll it up behind us. Today the price of that is becoming apparent. Society including healthcare systems are overwhelmed by a vast amount of sickness arising from ignorant living. We are drowning in a sea of pollution that contaminates everything outside and inside us. The climate that we and all life is dependent on is collapsing. A fundamental truth is that in an interconnected world, everything we do echoes back to us. Everything we throw away cannot actually be thrown away. There is no ‘away’. If nature is our rubbish bin, then we are rubbish as well. It is not just our bodies. Our mind seems quite full of rubbish too. Our wise hearts are drowned by a sea of information, superficiality and digital details.

Another way of living would be founded on a huge love and appreciation for this precious life, and for each struggling being, for our incredible and miraculous body/mind/heart, and for nature itself which is a vast home of cosmic beauty. We would realise that it is urgent to remember what it means to live a wholesome life. We would be determined to look after ourselves, our planet and life itself. And since the difference we make is partly dependent on our capacities, our knowledge and the clarity of heart and mind we would develop them as our contribution to this life.

There are a myriad ways to do this. One classic way is the way of caring awareness. It is easiest to visualise how this works if we consider what happens if we listen carefully to the voices within. Our bodies are constantly streaming messages of how each part and the whole is getting along, what is needed, what is missing and what is bright and healthy. Mostly we don’t listen unless it is a loud complaint. Even then we often don’t understand what the body is trying to tell us. Skin problems, headaches, tiredness, digestive upsets, prediabetes, overweight, bronchial problems, and a host of other signs can be our teachers if we listen, like a mother who understands intuitively the cry of a young baby that cannot yet talk. They will guide us to a wholesome way of life and an understanding of the sources of disharmony (dis-ease).

Caring awareness also gives us access to a toolbox of wise ways of healing. For example, on 3 occasions I have twisted my knee with damage to the meniscus, and each time the orthopaedic consultant told me that there was no choice other than an operation. But I was determined to try and help the body to heal itself. In each case I walked slowly and mindfully for an hour every day imagining my knees were made of rubber or air, floppy and soft. In 3 months, they were healed completely. Sometimes we do need to receive and appreciate diagnosis, and treatment from wise healers, doctors or surgeons. The Buddha also had a doctor. But again, awareness can lead us to appreciate and encourage the treatment and amplify its power. I remember an old friend of mine who decided to have radiotherapy for breast cancer and was full of anger and resistance to the medical system and the radiotherapy. Then one day she realised that her resistance was working against her health so she imagined the radiotherapy each time to be a great healing sun that purified her being from all the contaminating and unruly cancer cells. She lived another 20 healthy years after that.

We can deeply experience and cherish our life force as well. A primary source of health and well-being is the actual experience of the joy of life expressed by our cells and tissues. It can support our immunity and energy, show us how to rest, and greatly empower us when things get difficult. I remember a particular cancer patient’s deep daily meditations helped her to uncover a vast underground spring of the joy of life. She changed her name to Joy, and lived well with the cancer until the final letting go. Someone else with cancer told me that she was taking morphine and couldn’t meditate. I helped her to witness the change of awareness that morphine brought as an exploration and celebration of each lived moment.

The word health comes from the same root as whole. As with our inner world, so our outer world. We can listen to the cries and calls and invitations that the world of nature, including all living beings, stream to us and through us. We respond with love and care as much as we can and as the opportunities arise. Our health and well-being depends on our intimacy with everything within and without. One word that describes this is Sattva in Sanskrit. A Sattvic life is a life lived with the qualities of harmony, peace, goodness, care and wisdom. I sense this as I go out this morning and dig and weed the vegetable garden, give the weeds to the chickens, and collect some eggs. I add care to the earth and what grows and lives on it, and it returns life to me.

חיים שלמים בעולם מזוהם

לפני חמישים שנה, כאשר לימדתי ביוכימיה באוניברסיטת הינדו בורנאסי, היה לי חדר קטן באסי גהאט, אשר דלתו נפתחה היישר אל גדות נהר הגנגס. מדי בוקר הייתי קופץ לשחות בנהר הקדוש, למרות כל האזהרות הבריאותיות בנוגע לכך. יום אחד נשמעה דפיקה בדלת ששינתה את חיי. נער עמד שם ואמר לי שאם אעסיק את אמו כטבחית, אתמוך בשתי משפחות. לא יכולתי לסרב, אף על פי שלא היה לי צורך בטבחית. אך עד מהרה למדתי שהיא מכינה את המזון בהתאם לטבע גופו של כל אדם, לצרכיו הבריאותיים, לחולשותיו ולנטיותיו, בהתאם לעונות השנה, למזג האוויר, למוצרים הטריים שבשוק, ולאיזו מזון ותבלין משתלבים זה עם זה – לעיכול, לטעם ולאסתטיקה. הכול מתוך מסורת חכמה עתיקה, שרובה נשכחה. באותו המקום והרגע שיניתי את כיוון חיי המקצועיים ובארבעים השנים הבאות הקדשתי את עצמי להשיב ולשמר את חכמת הבריאות ההוליסטית העתיקה.

אנחנו פורשים שטיח לפנינו, שיכורים מהקידמה, ואיננו שמים לב כיצד אנו מגלגלים אותו מאחורינו. והנה, היום, מחיר השכחה הולך ונחשף לעינינו. החברה, ובתוכה מערכות הבריאות, כורעות תחת העומס הרב של מחלות הנובעות מאורח חיים חסר מודעות. אנו טובעים בים של זיהום המחלחל לכל אשר בחוץ ולתוך תוכנו. האקלים שעליו תלויה כל מערכת החיים קורס לנגד עינינו. אמת בסיסית היא שבעולם השזור במערכת אינטגרטיבית של קשרים ויחסים הדדיים, כל מעשה שלנו מהדהד ושב אלינו. לא ניתן באמת 'לזרוק' משהו 'מקום אחר'. אם הטבע הופך לפח הזבל שלנו, אנו עצמנו הופכים לזבל. ולא מדובר רק בגוף. גם תודעתנו מלאה באשפה – מידע שטחי, עומס פרטים דיגיטליים, רעש בלתי פוסק – עד שליבנו החכם כמעט ואינו נשמע עוד.

ישנה דרך אחרת לחיות – דרך שמושתתת על אהבה עצומה והוקרה עמוקה לחיים הללו, על חמלה לכל יצור נאבק, על התפעמות מהפלא של הגוף-נפש-לב שניתנו לנו, ועל הטבע כולו, שהוא בית אינסופי ליופי הקוסמי. דרך שבה היינו מבינים שחשוב לזכור מה המשמעות של לחיות חיים שלמים ובריאים. דרך שבה נהיה מחויבים לטפח את עצמנו, את כדור הארץ, ואת החיים כולם. ומשום שהיכולת שלנו לחולל שינוי תלויה, בין השאר, בכישורים שלנו, בידע, בבהירות הלב והתודעה – הרי שטיפוח של אלו הוא גם תרומתנו לעולם.

דרכים רבות יש לכך, ואחת הקלאסיות שבהן היא דרך המודעות האכפתית. קל להבין זאת כאשר אנו עוצרים להקשיב לקולות שבתוכנו. גופנו משדר לנו כל העת איתותים – איך מרגיש כל איבר, איך מרגיש הגוף כולו, מה חסר, מה נדרש, ומה בריא וברור. ברוב הזמן איננו מקשיבים, אלא אם כן זו צעקה רמה. וגם אז, לעיתים קרובות, איננו מבינים את שפת הגוף. בעיות עור, כאבי ראש, עייפות, עיכול לקוי, מצבי טרום-סוכרת, עודף משקל, בעיות נשימה – כל אלו ועוד יכולים להיות מורי דרך אם נקשיב להם, כמו אם המבינה את בכיו של תינוקה הרך שאינו יודע עדיין לדבר. סימנים אלו יובילו אותנו לחיים שלמים ובריאים ולהבנת שורשי חוסר ההרמוניה בחיים.

המודעות האכפתית נותנת לנו אף גישה לתיבת כלים מלאה של דרכי ריפוי חכמות. כך למשל, שלוש פעמים בחיי סבלתי מקרע במניסקוס שבברך. בכל פעם אמר לי האורטופד כי אין מנוס מניתוח. אך בחרתי להאמין בגוף וביכולתו לרפא את עצמו. בכל פעם הייתי צועד שעה ביום באיטיות ובתשומת לב, מדמיין את ברכיי כאילו הן גומי רך, קלילות וגמישות. לאחר שלושה חודשים הברכיים נרפאו כליל. לעיתים אכן יש צורך באבחון מקצועי ובטיפול של מרפאים, רופאים או מנתחים חכמים. גם לבודהה היה רופא. אך גם אז, המודעות שלנו יכולה להעצים את הריפוי ולהעמיק את השפעתו. אני זוכר חברה ותיקה שבחרה בטיפול של הקרנות לסרטן השד שממנו סבלה, אך הייתה מלאה בכעס ובהתנגדות לרפואה ולטיפול עצמו. עד שיום אחד הבינה שההתנגדות פועלת נגדה. או אז, היא דימתה את הקרינה כשמש גדולה של ריפוי, המטהרת את גופה מכל תא סורר ומזהם. היא חייתה עוד עשרים שנה מלאות ובריאות.

אנחנו יכולים גם לחוות ולהוקיר לעומק את כוח החיים שבתוכנו. מקור ראשוני של בריאות ורווחה הוא שמחת החיים המבעבעת מתוך תאי גופנו ורקמותינו. בכוחה לחזק את מערכת החיסון, להעניק לנו כוחות, ללמד אותנו איך ומתי לנוח, ולהעצים אותנו בזמנים קשים. אני נזכר באשה שחלתה בסרטן, אשר בזכות מדיטציות עמוקות יומיומיות גילתה בתוכה מעיין נסתר של שמחת חיים. היא אף שינתה את שמה לשמחה, וחיה באיכות חיים טובה עד מותה בשלווה .אישה אחרת שחלתה בסרטן סיפרה לי כי היא נוטלת מורפין ואינה מצליחה למדוט. עזרתי לה לחקור בתשומת לב את השינוי בתודעה שמביא עמו המורפין באופן שהפך כל רגע לרגע של גילוי וחגיגה.

המילה 'בריאות' באנגלית (health) מגיעה מאותו השורש כמו המילה 'שלמות' באנגלית (whole). כפי שעולמנו הפנימי כך גם העולם החיצוני. אפשר להאזין לבכי, לקריאות ולהזמנות שמגיעות מעולם הטבע ומכל יצור חי, החודרות דרכנו. אנו משיבים ככל יכולתנו באהבה ובאכפתיות. בריאותנו ורווחתנו תלויות בקרבתנו ובאינטימיות עם הכול – בפנים ובחוץ. מילה אחת שמתארת זאת בסנסקריט היא 'סַתְוָה' (Sattva). חיים סַתְוִיים הם חיים מלאי הרמוניה, שלום, טוב לב, תשומת לב וחכמה. אני חש זאת כאשר אני יוצא בבוקר לגינה, חופר, מנכש עשבים, נותן את העשבים לתרנגולות, ואוסף כמה ביצים. אני מוסיף תשומת לב ואהבה לאדמה ולכל מה שחי וצומח עליה – והיא משיבה לי חיים.

Equanimity: Riding the Waves of Change

There is no doubt that we are living in times of unprecedented anxiety. There are seemingly unstoppable wars and conflicts raging, with heartbreaking suffering, such as in Gaza right now. There are personal narratives of disease, pain and loss. There are global concerns, for example we may not be sure if the world itself can go on supporting us and our children as it has done up until now. Often, we forgot what ease, inner peace and complete joy really feel like. I am reminded of the joke about a telegram sent by a perennially anxious mother to her son on holiday: “Start worrying, details to follow”.

Clearly, we cannot expect life to endlessly provide us with comfort and security. Nor can we rely on others to provide it. Faced with the constant uncertainty and concern about what is happening or might happen we have no option but to find the resources of trust and steadiness from within. And of course they are there inside waiting to be invited. Think of the way we started life: the complete trust we had in our mothers, in the world which we explored without hesitation. I have watched with delight at the way my grandchildren as babies allow themselves to fall asleep in almost anyone’s arms, and how as toddlers, if they fall down off a step, they will feel pain, cry, and get right back on it again. Of course, fear accumulates in our life as we learn to be watchful of ourselves. However, trust is there in equal measure.

Trust is a major spiritual force, a profound and powerful attitude of the heart and mind. It is not a trust that things will be good or better, because we cannot control the future, and such a trust would lead to expectation and disappointment. But it is a shift towards an active trusting of the world to be what it is, and to feel a sense of belonging and intimacy with life whatever it throws at us. “We have no reason to mistrust our world, for it is not against us. It has its terrors, they are our terrors, it has its abysses, those abysses belong to us…” says the poet Rilke. It is a readiness to meet life as it is, to call things by their true name, whether joyful or painful. After all, it is in the end up to us how we receive the ‘slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’. Trust is developed by being mindful of the fact that the world is not against us and that we can change our inner climate. Mindfulness can help us to develop trust by revealing our intimacy and relationship with life, nature and people, versus the pain of shutting ourselves inside a prison of our fears.

Equanimity is this trust combined with insight, and non-attachment. In order to trust the world to be what it is, we need to be less wrapped in ourselves, to be less protected by armour, to be engaged, open, light and free. It is to be vulnerable and sensitive, yet never knocked down; ready to welcome whatever comes our way. It is about surfing the waves of change, not running away from them, or shutting ourselves in some apparently safe haven or in a comfort zone such as social media. It is staying steady within our constantly changing experience. Although equanimity is based on the word equal, it does not try to make everything that we experience equal. That would be another form of defence, a sense of numbness or neutrality. Equanimity is not indifference, although sometimes the two are confused. While equanimity is getting wet and riding the waves, indifference is shutting ourselves in the air-conditioned hotel room nearby. Equanimity is letting the world right in. The doors are open. Indifference is keeping it right out. The doors are kept shut. As T.S Eliot said so beautifully:

“There are three conditions which often look alike

Yet differ completely, flourish in the same hedgerow:

Attachment to self and to things and to persons, detachment

From self and from things and from persons; and, growing between them, indifference

Which resembles the others as death resembles life,”[i]

How can equanimity be practiced? It is partly the result of all the spiritual practice that we have ever done, and it is constantly developed by inner practices that help us to see things more clearly. Sitting silently in meditation for extended periods automatically leads to equanimity as we learn to stay steady and receive whatever comes. In addition, there are directions of practice that can specifically develop this resilience. ‘Let our meditation be like the earth’ said the Buddha, ‘for then satisfying and unsatisfying contacts with the world through the senses will not invade the mind.’ We may be in the most problematic situation, whether it is in the midst of a family crisis, or under overwhelming pressure to achieve something, or we are in pain or sickness, or simply whether we are caught in the overstimulating honey trap of the shopping mall – a bigger, more universal, and less personal awareness will bring another perspective to it all. We will feel every nuance of the situation but will not be knocked over by it, since there is a much vaster world which is holding it all. Indeed, the experience of the great mother earth under our feet does ground us and we feel more ballast like a great ship instead of a little boat rocked by huge waves. It gives us a sense of taking our place on this earth, without wobbling.

Equanimity is always helped by the big view. That is, a sense that conditions and conditionality create results accordingly, and though we can chart a wise course and navigate towards harmony, we also need to surrender. There is a Tibetan story that illustrates this. Two men were walking in a crowded marketplace. All of a sudden one of them was hit by a stick. He began to shout at the stick. His friend said to him: ‘Why are you shouting at the stick? Wouldn’t it be more sensible to shout at the person hit you?’ said his friend. ‘Of course’, said his friend and began shouting at the unknown person who hit him. ‘But why are you shouting at the person?’ his friend asked him. ‘Maybe that person has had a really hard time, and can’t help expressing some of his frustration. Maybe he hasn’t had anything to eat for a while. Maybe you should shout at the conditions that caused that person to behave like that.’ The man who was hit was just about to shout at the conditions, but then he stopped. ‘But that means there is nothing to shout at - I would need to shout at the whole universe!’ he exclaimed. ‘Exactly!’ said his friend.

We cannot be hurt if we are light and free within ourselves. The doors are open, the windows are open, cold winds do blow in, but they just blow through us. When faced with the rage of someone, for example, we may feel the energy, heat and vibration in the body/mind, but it doesn’t stick. Like the grasses, we may bend but we cannot break.

שוויון נפש: לרכוב על גלי השינוי

אין ספק שאנו חיים בתקופה של דאגות חסרות תקדים. מלחמות ועימותים נדמים כבלתי פוסקים, מְשַאִירִים שובל של סבל שובר לב, כמו בעזה ברגעים אלו ממש. סיפורים אישיים על מחלות, כאבים ואובדן מציפים את חיינו. חששות גלובליים ותחושה של חוסר ביטחון באשר ליכולת של העולם להמשיך לספק את צרכינו ואת צורכי ילדינו כפי שעשה עד כה. לעיתים תכופות כל כך אנו שוכחים איך נחת, שקט פנימי ושמחה אמיתית מרגישים. זה מזכיר לי בדיחה על אם חרד ששולחת מברק לבנה: "תתחיל לדאוג – פרטים בהמשך".

איננו יכולים לצפות שהחיים יספקו לנו תמיד נוחות וביטחון. לא נוכל גם להישען על אחרים שיספקו זאת עבורנו. אל מול חוסר הוודאות המתמיד והדאגה באשר למה שקורה או עשוי לקרות, אין לנו ברירה אלא למצוא בתוכנו את מקורות האמון והיציבות. והם שם – ממתינים להזמנה. די להיזכר באופן בו התחלנו את חיינו: באמון המלא שהיה לנו באמנו, בעולם שחקרנו ללא פחד. ראיתי בהשתאות כיצד נכדיי, כתינוקות, נרדמו בקלות בזרועותיו של כמעט כל אדם; וכיצד, כפעוטות, אם נפלו ממדרגה – חשו כאב, בכו, ושבו וטפסו עליה שוב. כמובן, הפחד מצטבר במהלך חיינו ככל שאנו גדלים ולומדים להיזהר. אך יש בנו גם מידה שווה של אמון.

אמון הוא כוח רוחני משמעותי – איכות עמוקה ועוצמתית של הלב והתודעה. אין מדובר על אמונה בכך שהדברים יהיו טובים או ישתפרו, שהרי אין לנו שליטה על העתיד, ואמונה כזו מולידה ציפייה ואכזבה. אלא מדובר על שינוי תודעתי לעבר המאפשר לעולם להיות מה שהוא ולחוש תחושת שייכות וקרבה לחיים – יהיו אשר יהיו. המשורר רילקה כתב: "אין לנו סיבה להתייחס לעולמנו בחוסר אמון – כי הוא אינו נגדנו. אם יש בו חרדות – הריהן החרדות שלנו. אם יש בו תהומות – תהומות אלו שייכות לנו...". זהו נכונות לפגוש את החיים כפי שהם, לקרוא לדברים בשמם האמיתי, בין אם הם משמחים או כואבים. שהרי בסופו של דבר הבחירה כיצד לקבל את "הפגיעות והחיצים של גורל מקפח" היא בידינו. האמון מתפתח כאשר אנו מתבוננים בתשומת לב ורואים שהעולם אינו נגדנו – ושאנו יכולים לשנות את האקלים הפנימי שלנו. המדיטציה יכולה לעזור לנו לטפח את האמון, בכך שהיא חושפת את הקרבה והקשר שלנו עם החיים, עם הטבע ועם בני אדם – בניגוד לכאב שבללכוד את עצמנו בתוך כלא הפחדים שלנו.

שוויון נפש הוא האמון הזה בשילוב של תובנה ואי-היאחזות. כדי לאפשר לעצמנו לתת אמון בעולם להיות כפי שהוא, עלינו להיות פחות עטויים בעצמנו, פחות עטופים בשריון, להיות פתוחים, קלילים, חופשיים. זהו מצב של פגיעוּת ורגישות, אך כזה שאינו מתמוטט לעולם; מוכנות לקבל כל מה שיגיע. מדובר בלרכוב על גלי השינוי – לא לברוח מהם, ולא להסתגר באשליית ביטחון או אזור נוחות, כמו הרשתות החברתיות. זוהי עמידה יציבה בתוך החוויה המשתנה ללא הרף. אף ששוויון נפש מבוסס על המילה "שוויון", אין הכוונה שכל החוויות שוות. דבר שהיה יוצר מגננה נוספת – אדישות או נייטרליות. שוויון נפש אינו אדישות, על אף שיש המבלבלים בין השניים. בעוד שוויון נפש הוא להירטב ולרכוב על הגלים, אדישות היא להסתגר בחדר המלון הממוזג הסמוך. שוויון נפש הוא לאפשר לעולם להיכנס ולפתוח את הדלתות והלב. אדישות – נועלת אותם. כדברי ט"ס אליוט:

"שלושה מצבים שנראים דומים אך רחוקים זה מזה לגמרי, פורחים באותו סבך:
היאחזות בעצמי, בדברים ובאנשים; הינתקות מעצמי, מדברים ומאנשים;
ובתווך – האדישות –
שנראית לשני הקצוות דומה כמו שהמוות דומה לחיים."

כיצד ניתן לתרגל שוויון נפש? הוא תוצר של כל תרגול רוחני שאי פעם עשינו, והוא ממשיך להתפתח מתוך תרגולים פנימיים שמסייעים לנו לראות את המציאות בבהירות רבה יותר. ישיבה שקטה במדיטציה לאורך זמן מובילה מאליה לשוויון נפש, כאשר אנו לומדים לעמוד יציב מול כל מה שמגיע. ויש גם תרגולים פרטניים המכוונים לטיפוח של החוסן הזה. "תהא המדיטציה כמו האדמה", אמר הבודהה, "שכן אז, תחושות נעימות או בלתי נעימות מהעלום לא יפלשו לתודעה". גם כאשר אנו במצב הבעייתי ביותר – בעיצומו של משבר משפחתי, או תחת לחץ עצום להישג, או בכאב או חולי, או פשוט לכודים בפיתוי המתוק אך מציף של הקניון – תודעה גדולה, כללית ופחות אישית תוכל להציע לנו מבט אחר. נרגיש כל ניואנס של הסיטואציה, אך לא נתמוטט בגללה, כי יש עולם רחב הרבה יותר שמכיל את הכול. אכן, התחושה של אמא אדמה הגדולה תחת רגלינו מעגנת אותנו ואנו מרגישים יותר יציבים כמו ספינה גדולה במקום סירה קטנה המיטלטלת על הגלים. זה נותן לנו תחושה שאנחנו תופסים את מקומנו על כדור הארץ הזה, בלי להתנדנד.

"אולי האדם הזה עבר חיים קשים ואין לו דרך אחרת לפרוק תסכול. אולי הוא רעב. אולי עליך לצעוק על התנאים שגרמו לו להתנהג כך". האיש שהוכה כמעט החל לצעוק על התנאים – ואז עצר. "אבל אז אצטרך לצעוק על כל היקום!" קרא. "בדיוק", השיב לו חברו.

לא ניתן לפגוע בנו אם אנו קלילים וחופשיים בתוכנו. הדלתות פתוחות, החלונות פתוחים, הרוח הקרה נושבת פנימה – אך היא פשוט עוברת דרכנו. כאשר אנו ניצבים מול זעם של מישהו, לדוגמה, נרגיש את האנרגיה, את החום ואת הרטט בגוף-נפש – אך זה לא יידבק. כמו עשב בשדה, נתכופף בפני הרוח – אך לא נישבר.

I'm not a person I'm a kleidoscope

Where are you now? Where is your attention? Is it inside the meanings of the text you are reading in this moment? Stop. Take a breath. Come out! Open a view as wide as the sky! You see the text, but you also see the screen that is behind the text, the space between you and the text, your hands and arms, the room or the environment in which you sit, the sounds around you, the images of what the writer of this text was going through as he wrote it, the state of your body, the feelings in your heart, the stream of consciousness, the breath blessing you with life right now, the deep awareness that says ‘I am alive’, and behind it all the vast existential world that holds us and that we are part of.

We and everything else are not things. We are verbs not nouns. If you take a quick look at your hand, you see a thing, a hand. But a deeper more careful and mindful look will see the hand as full of dynamic living experiences that change all the time: touch, movement, energy, prana, flow. We don’t have a body. My body is an assumption or a summary resulting from a quick look. Going deeper, we see it is a flow, an indescribable, indefinable, changing cloud of energy, that doesn’t really belong to anyone.

A traditional Buddhist story tells of a nun who was asked: “Who made you? Who is your creator?” The nun answered forcefully: “What makes you think I am somebody? A person is just an assumption. There is no person here who is created. I am just a collection of bits and pieces.” Another story describes how two monks were sitting in the forest and a beautiful woman came rushing by. Soon, a man ran to them and asked them if they had seen a beautiful woman rushing past as he wanted to catch her. One of the monks said: “No. No beautiful woman came this way.” So the man went away. And the other monk said: “How can you break the ethical rules by lying? It is not right speech.” The other monk said: “I didn't lie. I didn't see a woman rushing by. I just saw teeth rushing by”.

As the body, so the mind. We usually make a summary of our thoughts. For example a difficulty we may be experiencing currently seems to be going around and around in the mind. But if we look at that stream of consciousness, we see it's made up of tiny little packages, each one saying something a bit different, each one following the one before, the rebirth of one thought coming from the death of the previous thought. Like bubbles.

This unpacking of a contracted, minimal view of reality, is not an abstract spiritual practice or an interesting philosophy, but a vital and even life-saving necessity. Take the current conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere. If we meet someone we assume to be threatening, we will not see them. We will notice their externals, such as skin colour, language or origin, and immediately apply the label that we have absorbed from others – Palestinian, Israeli, soldier, black skin, white skin. This is the quick view, without insight. The minute we look more deeply, we can look in their eyes, we can begin to unpack their big life: their needs, their pains, their struggles, their world, their desires and dreams, what they feel about their life and what they think about you. And all of a sudden this person is a huge universe, no longer ‘the other’.

“All compounded things are impermanent. Practice looking deeply and with care” were the Buddha’s last words. It shows us that we ourselves along with everything else are made of many things. Each of us are so many selves. Grandfather or teacher is a label that I sometimes use for myself, although I know it is such a tiny little label from all the thousands of other labels that are possible. Just one small blip on the screen. A lover, a healthy person, a sick person, a tall person, a short person, an old person, young person, a happy person, an unhappy person - it just goes on and on and on and on. We can never define ourselves. We are a bit like an infinite Babushka, dolls within dolls.

An early Buddhist teaching formalised the way that an experience is composed of elements, which we put together and create a conceptual summary, such as ‘cup’, ‘tree’, ‘me’, ‘them’, ‘fear’, ‘need’, without being aware that we are doing it. An experience is put together from a collection of components, called khandhas in Pali or skhandhas in Sanskrit, namely form, perception, feeling, mental constructions and consciousness. Brain science too has found that an experience is constructed from unconscious triggering of different parts of the brain that together result in the experience of tree or of oneself. Meditation can reveal how we build an experience from these elements, which empowers us to take charge of our inner life. At the same time we can see that what we think of as a real experience is actually constructed of bubbles that rapidly come and go.

The labels we use to define ourselves, others and the world are not errors. They can be functionally useful. Try showing your passport at a border and exclaim to the border guard that it is a fiction! But at the same time they don’t need to dominate our awareness and our life. We can slowly, steadily and in a healthy way develop insight that takes us way beyond limited summaries and assumptions. We will live in an extraordinary, unlimited and mysterious kaleidoscope of changing conditions. This is dharma. Let it take us.

"הגוף שלי" הוא הנחה או סיכום שמקורו במבט מהיר. כאשר מעמיקים, רואים שזהו זרם – ענן של אנרגיה משתנה, לא ניתן לתיאור או הגדרה, שאינו שייך באמת לאף אחד.

סיפור בודהיסטי מסורתי מספר על נזירה שנשאלה: "מי ברא אותך? מי יצר אותך?" והנזירה השיבה בתקיפות: "מה גורם לך לחשוב שאני מישהי? אדם הוא רק הנחה. אין כאן אדם שנברא. אני רק אוסף של חלקים."
סיפור אחר מתאר שני נזירים שישבו ביער, כשאישה יפה חלפה על פניהם במהירות. זמן קצר לאחר מכן הופיע גבר ושאל אותם אם ראו אישה יפה שרצה על פני השביל. אחד הנזירים השיב: "לא. לא עברה כאן אישה יפה." האיש המשיך בדרכו. ואז אמר לו הנזיר השני: "איך אתה מפר את הכללים האתיים על ידי שקר? זו לא דיבור נכון." והנזיר הראשון השיב: "לא שיקרתי. לא ראיתי אישה רצה. ראיתי שיניים רצות."

כמו הגוף, כך גם התודעה. אנו נוטים לסכם את מחשבותינו. לדוגמה, קושי כלשהו שנחווה כרגע נדמה כמסתובב שוב ושוב בתודעה. אך אם נתבונן בזרם התודעה, נראה שהוא מורכ מבגלים קטנים, שכל אחת מהן אומרת משהו מעט שונה, כל אחת באה בעקבות קודמתה, לידה של מחשבה מתוך מותה של קודמתה. כמו בועות.

הפירוק הזה של המבט המכווץ והמינימלי על המציאות איננו תרגול רוחני מופשט או פילוסופיה מעניינת, אלא צורך חיוני, ואפילו מציל חיים. קח לדוגמה את הסכסוכים הנוכחיים במזרח התיכון ובמקומות אחרים. אם נפגוש מישהו שנראה לנו מאיים, לא נראה אותו באמת. נשים לב למאפיינים חיצוניים כמו צבע עור, שפה או מוצא, ומיד נצמיד תווית שספגנו מהחברה – פלסטיני, ישראלי, חייל, עור כהה, עור בהיר. זהו המבט החפוז, חסר התובנה. אך ברגע שנביט לעומק, נוכל להביט בעיניו, להתחיל לפרום את חייו הרחבים: את צרכיו, כאביו, מאבקיו, עולמו, רצונותיו וחלומותיו, מה הוא מרגיש לגבי חייו ומה הוא חושב עליך. ופתאום אותו אדם הוא יקום שלם, כבר לא "האחר".

"כל הדברים המותנים הם בני חלוף. תרגלו ראייה מעמיקה וזהירה" – אלו היו מילותיו האחרונות של הבודהה. הן מראות לנו שגם אנו עצמנו, כמו הכול, מורכבים מהרבה דברים. כל אחד מאיתנו הוא הרבה אניים. סבא או מורה הן תוויות שאני לעיתים משתמש בהן עבור עצמי, אך אני יודע שהן רק תוויות זעירות מתוך אלפי תוויות אפשריות אחרות. רק נקודה קטנה על המסך. אוהב, בריא, חולה, גבוה, נמוך, זקן, צעיר, שמח, עצוב – זה פשוט ממשיך וממשיך. אין דרך להגדיר את עצמנו. אנחנו כמו בבושקה אינסופית – בובות בתוך בובות.

תורה מוקדמת בבודהיזם תיארה כיצד כל חוויה מורכבת ממרכיבים, אשר אנו מחברים ויוצרים מהם סיכום מושגי כמו "כוס", "עץ", "אני", "הם", "פחד", "צורך" – מבלי להיות מודעים לכך שאנו עושים זאת. החוויה מורכבת מאוסף של רכיבים, הנקראים קנדהות בפאלי או סקנדהות בסנסקריט: צורה, תחושה, תפיסה, תהליכים מנטליים ותודעה. גם מדעי המוח גילו כי חוויה נוצרת מהפעלה לא-מודעת של חלקים שונים במוח, אשר יחד יוצרים את החוויה של "עץ" או של "עצמי". מדיטציה יכולה לחשוף כיצד אנו בונים חוויה מאותם מרכיבים – תובנה שמאפשרת לנו לקחת אחריות על עולמנו הפנימי. ובו בזמן לראות שהחוויה שאנו חושבים עליה כ"אמיתית", היא בעצם עשויה מבועות – שבאות והולכות במהירות.

התוויות שאנו משתמשים בהן כדי להגדיר את עצמנו, את האחרים ואת העולם אינן שגיאה. הן עשויות להיות שימושיות מבחינה תפקודית. נסה להראות דרכון בגבול ולומר לשוטר שזו פיקציה! אך יחד עם זאת – אין צורך שהתוויות הללו ישלטו בתודעתנו ובחיינו. אפשר, לאט, בעקביות ובאופן בריא, לפתח תובנה שלוקחת אותנו הרבה מעבר לסיכומים מוגבלים והנחות אוטומטיות. נחיה בתוך קליידוסקופ מופלא, בלתי מוגבל ומסתורי של תנאים משתנים. זהו הדהרמה. הבה ניתן לה להוביל אותנו.

Mourning and Liberation

We had a tragedy here in Clil a month ago. My close friend and spiritual brother over 40 years, Yisrael Roseman, had an accident in the night, and his simple dwelling burnt, and he died, probably from smoke inhalation. At the same time the dharma centre that he built by hand, and we have been guiding for 30 years, Mashiv Nefesh, also burnt. During the last few years he had been saying that he was quite ready to give his body back to where it came from, not from despair but from the fulfilment that is expressed as a readiness to go and leave this life behind. A few days before his death, he came to the group I happened to be teaching there, and reported to us ecstatically that he had had a revelation that evening as he gazed into the flames in the woodburning stove. He said that the fire told him that everything in this existence is constantly shape shifting, changing its shape, and nothing is lost. And then it happened to him through fire. The picture above was taken by his daughter, more or less at the moment he died. What is the column reaching up to the sky? Only the camera saw it.

Mourning and sense of loss arise in my heart spontaneously now and then. All of us have felt the same sense of mourning at the loss of someone close. It is loss of what we love and are used to and are part of us. It is loss of what is precious. Many of us also feel a chronic sense of mourning these days at the loss of the kind of society and sense of community that we were used to. It is the loss of a social environment manifesting kindness, benefit and peace, not conflict, cruelty and war. We mourn for our society that was more caring of human life, and was less dominated by extremes of greed and self-interest, and has now lost its moral compass. We feel the sadness of the loss of a civil society that celebrated the richness of diversity and individual differences.

Mourning is a healthy response and invites us to surrender to an experience that is not in our control. It invites us to meet existence as it is. It is a deep lesson in letting go. Traditionally, at times of crisis, death and loss we pray. It is a natural movement to acknowledge the beyond. If we make ourselves fully available to the dimensions of the experience of loss and mourning, we will realise that we are in the hands of uncontrollable existence. It collapses the illusions of business as usual and the distractions of the ordinary functional mind. It opens a precious window of truth and authenticity, which, like all spiritual journeys takes us from the personal to the impersonal, from the subjective point of view to a more universal point of view. “Grief is a doorway to our soul. When we open ourselves to sorrow we are touched by the depths of our humanity and in those depths we find our capacity to feel wonder, to be fully alive” (Francis Weller). Sorrow asks us to honour its power and authenticity: “And if you have given sorrow the space its gentle origins demand, then you may truly say: life is beautiful and so rich. So beautiful and so rich that it makes you want to believe in God” (Etty Hillesum, writing from Amsterdam at the time of the Nazi occupation).

What is the experience of loss? What does it tell of our relationship to what we lost? It tells us that we hold what or who we have lost in our heart with great love and appreciation. In the case of Yisrael, the sense of loss opens out into a huge appreciation. Of a life well lived, of the possibilities of profound liberation in this life, and of the freedom to embrace change and transition, including death.

We can honour the experience of loss as an expression of our humanness, but also contemplate its nature, its truth and its source. What happens if we take the authenticity of mourning and loss even further? What might we realize if we explore the deeper implications of the transitory nature of all things? It directly challenges the personal point of view and the assumption of selfhood. When we know that so-called reality is nothing other than a constant stream of shifting forms, and all experiences are like ‘lines drawn on water’ can there actually be any loss? Can there be any loss at all in an interconnected world? And without the personal perception of loss, then birth and death don’t really exist for us either, but are the shape shifting nature of all reality. There is a story in the Pali Canon of a distraught mother, Patacara, who came to the Buddha just after losing all of her family one by one in accidents, and finally her new baby. The Buddha must have recognized her potential for insight, as he invited her straight into the existential mystery that could undo her extremes of grief, and at the same time invite awakening. He pointed out that she, and all of us do not know from where we arrive into this life and where we go. “You weep for one whose path you cannot understand.” he said, “You don’t know anything of the track of this child. As he came, so he went, without your control or permission. Indeed he has lost his human form but just keeps flowing on. So for whom do you mourn?”

Awakening too, like the arrival and departure into bodily form that we call birth and death, is indescribable and ungraspable by the ordinary mind. Nirvana is translated as ‘gone out’ like a candle, but not gone. In a traditional metaphor, when a candle goes out does it doesn’t make any sense to ask to which direction it has gone. In the striking image appearing to Yisrael shortly before he died, in a shape changing reality, nothing is lost.

אבל ושחרור

לפני חודש אירעה טרגדיה כאן בכליל. חברי הקרוב ואחי הרוחני במשך יותר מארבעים שנה, ישראל רוזמן, עבר תאונה בלילה, מישכנו הפשוט נשרף — והוא מת, כנראה משאיפת עשן. באותו הזמן גם מרכז הדהרמה שהוא בנה במו ידיו, ושבו לימדנו יחד במשך שלושים שנה, "משיב נפש", נשרף אף הוא.

בשנים האחרונות הוא נהג לומר שהוא מוכן להחזיר את גופו למקום שממנו בא — לא מתוך ייאוש, אלא מתוך תחושת מיצוי שהובילה למוכנות להיפרד מהחיים האלה. כמה ימים לפני מותו, הוא בא לקבוצה שלימדתי באותו זמן, ודיווח לנו בהתלהבות שחווה התגלות באותו ערב כשהביט בלהבות התנור הבוער בעץ. הוא אמר שהאש לחשה לו שכל מה שקיים משתנה כל הזמן, משנה צורה — וששום דבר אינו נאבד. ואז זה קרה לו, דרך האש.

התמונה שלמעלה צולמה בידי בתו, פחות או יותר ברגע מותו. מהו אותו עמוד המתרומם אל השמיים? רק המצלמה ראתה אותו.

אבל ותחושת אובדן עולים בי מעת לעת באופן ספונטני. כולנו חווינו את תחושת האבל הזאת כשאיבדנו מישהו קרוב. זהו אובדן של מה שאהבנו, של מה שהיינו רגילים, ושל מה שהיה חלק מאיתנו. זהו אובדן של דבר מה יקר. רבים מאיתנו חשים בימינו גם תחושת אבל כרונית על אובדן של החברה והקהילתיות שאליה היינו שייכים. זהו אובדן של סביבה חברתית שהתאפיינה בטוב-לב, תועלת ושלום — ולא באלימות, אכזריות ומלחמה. אנו מתאבלים על חברה שבעבר העניקה ערך לחיי אדם, והייתה פחות נשלטת על ידי חמדנות קיצונית ואינטרסים אישיים — חברה שאיבדה כיום את המצפן המוסרי שלה. אנו חשים את הצער על אובדן חברה אזרחית שחגגה את העושר שבשונות ובאינדיבידואליות.

"ואם נתת לצער את המרחב שמקורותיו העדינים דורשים — אז תוכל באמת לומר: החיים יפים ועשירים כל כך. יפים ועשירים כל כך, שהם גורמים לך לרצות להאמין באלוהים" (אֶטי הילסום, כותבת מאמסטרדם בתקופת הכיבוש הנאצי).

מהי חוויית האובדן? מה היא מספרת לנו על הקשר שלנו למה שאבד? היא מספרת לנו שאנו מחזיקים בליבנו את מה או מי שאבד באהבה והערכה עצומה. במקרה של ישראל, תחושת האובדן מתרחבת לתוך הערכה עצומה — של חיים שנחיו היטב, של אפשרות לשחרור עמוק בחיים האלה, ושל החירות לחבוק שינוי ומעברים — כולל את המוות.

אנו יכולים לכבד את חוויית האובדן כחלק מהאנושיות שלנו, אך גם להרהר בטבעה, באמת שבה ובמקורה. מה קורה כאשר אנו לוקחים את האותנטיות של האבל והאובדן עוד צעד קדימה? מה עשוי להתברר לנו אם נבחן לעומק את ההשלכות של טבעה החולף של כל תופעה? הדבר מאתגר ישירות את נקודת המבט האישית ואת ההנחה בדבר קיומו של העצמי. כאשר אנו מבינים שהמציאות, כביכול, אינה אלא זרם מתמיד של צורות משתנות, ושכל חוויה היא כ"קוים הנחרטים על פני המים" — האם ייתכן בכלל שיש אובדן? האם ייתכן אובדן כלשהו בעולם שבו הכל מחובר זה לזה? ובהיעדר תפיסה אישית של אובדן, גם לידה ומוות אינם באמת קיימים עבורנו, אלא רק מבטאים את טבעה המשתנה של המציאות כולה.

יש סיפור בקנון הפאלי על אם שבורת לב, פטצ׳ארה, שבאה אל הבודהה זמן קצר לאחר שאיבדה את כל בני משפחתה — זה אחר זה, בתאונות שונות — ולבסוף גם את תינוקהּ שזה עתה נולד. הבודהה כנראה הבחין בפוטנציאל התובנה שלה, והזמין אותה להיכנס היישר אל תוך המסתורין הקיומי, שיכול היה לשחרר אותה מהקצוות הקשים של אבלהּ, ובו בזמן להזמין להתעוררות. הוא הצביע על כך שהיא, כמו כולנו, אינה יודעת מהיכן היא באה לעולם הזה ולאן היא הולכת ממנו. "את בוכה על מי שדרכו אינה מובנת לך," הוא אמר, "אינך יודעת דבר על מסלולו של ילד זה. כשם שבא — כך הלך, ללא שליטתך או רשותך. אכן, הוא איבד את צורתו האנושית, אך ממשיך לזרום הלאה. אם כן, על מי את מתאבלת?"

גם ההתעוררות, כמו ההופעה וההיעלמות לתוך צורת גוף שאנו מכנים לידה ומוות — אינה ניתנת לתפיסה או לתיאור על ידי התודעה הרגילה. נירוונה מתורגמת כ"יצא". במטפורה המסורתית, כשנר כבה, אין שום היגיון בלשאול לאן הלך האור. ובתמונה המדהימה שהופיעה לישראל זמן קצר לפני מותו — במציאות שמשנה צורה כל הזמן, שום דבר לא באמת הולך לאיבוד.
