Greetings Sozo Peeps,

Do you feel like you’re at the center of your own story? Or are you participating in Jesus’?

I admit that God is at the center of my life, but I sometimes make it so that He is in MY life, not the other way around. Yikes!

In the midst of all my ambition and busyness, I forget that, “Oh yes, Jesus is at the center of everything. Not me.”

I simply get to be a part of His story, and that’s okay. Whether it’s a supporting role like praying for someone at the store, or being more prominent as a speaker, both roles have value. Jesus is the main character. I get to be a side character that supports His dreams coming true.

Jesus is the focus

It’s easy to partner with main character syndrome—a condition where we view ourselves as the center of the universe—especially when we’re the main speaker or the worship leader. But what about all those other times when we’re not seen? Is there still value? Of course!

We need to be okay with those times where we are not highlighted—when God simply wants us to pray for a person in need. Maybe your assignment from the Lord this week is to “be kind?” I’ve had this task before and it felt silly. But I’ve learned not to neglect His roles for me, no matter how small. Remember, we are a part of the greatest narrative on earth. We should be excited to see what part He has for us!

The value of each role

This excitement to serve reminds me of my daughter-in-law who got cast in a popular TV show. She was so excited to show us the episode and when we finally saw it, we were stunned. She was only in it for about two seconds (and the view was from her back). So, was she even in it?! In her mind, it was a dream come true. I admired her joy and thought, We need to have this same attitude when we’re serving in Jesus’ story!

Conclusion

Everyone loves feeling important, and being on stage is always fun, but there’s value in serving God in a supporting role. It’s hard to hear, but sometimes we do act from the shadows, and that’s just as valuable as anything else. We all get our time in the sun, some more than others, but every person has value.

This week, ask God as during your devotional time, “What’s my role in your story today?” Whatever it is, embrace it with joy, and know that you are a part of the greatest narrative.

One hard part about life is knowing when to make major decisions, especially when you’re waiting on things to fall into place. Say a business deal is about to close, but you don’t know when. You feel anxious, wondering, Is there anything else I should do? It’s like waiting for a breakthrough from God, but the bills are piling up, and you need a change, so you think: Is it wise to move forward (even if it’s the wrong choice)? Or should I wait and see how God comes through?

This gets even harder in seasons when God isn’t speaking. Yikes! We’ve all had those seasons, and it’s never easy.

The choice between these options is tricky because we don’t want to make decisions out of fear or haste. Of course, if you’re facing an emergency, it’s good to act quickly. But in those slower times when you have space to sit back and analyze your decisions, really try to discern what the Lord is telling you. If He’s not saying anything, get wise counsel. If wise counsel isn’t available, do some intercessory prayer.

For those who don’t know, I’ve been driving across America with my family for the past month or so. We left Redding on July 5th and plan to return on August 28th.

It’s been a long trip. So far we’ve driven through:

• California

• Nevada

• Utah

• Wyoming

• Colorado

• Kansas

• Missouri

• Illinois

• Indiana

• Ohio

• Michigan

Some people have asked: “Which is your favorite state?!” I’m not sure, but I can tell you my least favorite: Nevada. (Sorry folks. But that place looks like a desolate planet.)

What I’ve learned

Each state is so varied. You can ignore the obvious geographical changes and be stunned by the cultural differences. I was surprised at how varied each state felt. They’re almost like unique countries.

Just last week, my wife and I stayed in Michigan with my brother and his family. We were at a lake community with a lot of Amish so we got to interact with some pretty cool people.

Returning home

Overall, it’s been a memorable journey. Today, we’ll start our trip back to California. Who knows which route we’ll take? Not knowing is half the fun!

My wife’s biggest goal is to cut through Arizona so we can see the Grand Canyon. I’m so excited!

There’s a huge difference between facts and truth. For instance, facts might be telling you one thing—that your bank account is low and you’re not making progress—but truth says another—that you are on the right path and following God’s commands.

It’s similar to how King David held on to the word he received from the Lord. David was anointed as king by God when he was fifteen years old. Yet, he didn’t even see this promise fulfilled until he was thirty!

I’m sure it was hard for David to keep the promise in mind. Most of us would have probably given up and let the circumstances kill our faith. So, how did he make it?

King David had an understanding of who God was. He was close to His heart and understood that when the Lord gives a word, it will come to pass, no matter what.

In times of crisis or waiting, hold on to what God is saying. The facts might say one thing, but if you believe God’s truth, you can navigate any season.

Sometimes we need to be reminded that God cares for us.

Do you know how many times I’ve had to recall this?

I help people realize this for a living, and I still struggle with it. So, what’s the issue?

Our minds get distracted with our day-to-day needs. Our kids have medical emergencies, our businesses need help, or our job searches aren’t going well.

We forget to take a step back and remember, “Oh yeah, God is on my side.”

Some of you need to declare out loud right now that the Lord is fighting for you. He’s not punishing you or leaving you out in the wilderness to wither and fade.

He’s fighting on your behalf and making a way in the desert.

This week, in the hastiness of all you need, remember to look forward to God’s provision and stay thankful. Scripture says:

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. — 1 Peter 5:6-7 NIV

I release peace over your circumstances and ask for God’s provision to be revealed. In Jesus’ Name I pray, amen.

Greetings Sozo Peeps,

Back in February 2023, I asked Bethel’s Sunday Night audience to do a prophetic act, prompting them, “Do you feel like you’ve been battling the enemy head-on and it’s wearing you out?”

A lot of people stood up.

I ended up leading the crowd in a prayer, which I’d like to go over now.

You see, spiritual warfare is done best when we battle from a position of authority.

When we fight the enemy on his own turf, we climb into the boxing ring and get hit by returning fire.

Why? Because we were never meant to face the enemy head-on.

Our authority is given to us by Jesus, Who is seated with the Father in the heavenly realms (see Ephesians 1:20).

Stuck in the boxing ring

It’s tempting to get into ‘warfare’ mode when we see the storms raging around us. After all, we have to ‘shift the atmosphere,’ right?!

Problems arise when we do these battles out of our own strength. For instance, when I discern the influence of a demonic spirit, I don’t personally go to war with it. I simply identify its presence and refuse to allow its influence, declaring, “I see you [lust, hatred, jealousy, etc.]. I’m not partnering with you and I send you back.”

Do you see how relaxing that is? I’m not speaking in tongues, rebuking demons, or closing spiritual doors. I’m just declaring out loud, “I’m not partnering with you,” then releasing the opposite.

Stepping out of covering

The problem that so many Christians run into is that we step out of God’s covering. Then, we wonder why we’re being attacked!

This reminds me of a Shifting Atmospheres Conference I hosted several years ago. A woman complained that she’d been under constant harassment. When I asked her when it had started, she confessed that it began after she’d interceded against a regional spirit.

I asked her, “Did God tell you to pray against this spirit?”

She said, “No.”

Voilà! No wonder she was under attack! She’d stepped out of her assignment and tangled with a spirit that had authority in the area.

Conclusion

On a side note, I do believe we have complete authority in our homes. The same is true of our churches or businesses if we're in a leadership role.

Overall, it’s important to be at peace. Spiritual warfare doesn’t have to be scary or complicated.

Simply rest in God’s authority and stay connected to His Spirit. He has a pathway to advance His Kingdom, and we must follow it.

Let’s pray:

“Father, forgive us for battling in our own strength. Return us to Your heavenly realm where we are seated with Christ and Your eternal perspective. Forgive us for stepping out of our authority and getting into the boxing ring with the enemy. Keep us in Your peace as we contend for breakthrough. Displace any and all attacks against us. I pray this in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

It’s hard to imagine now, but before the 1930s, the entitlement programs in the United States were almost nonexistent.

This meant that the actual taxes that Americans paid to the federal government were astronomically lower—around 1% to 1.5%.

Today, Americans pay around 27% in federal, state, and local taxes.

The downside to lower taxes, of course, is you get fewer public services. If you end up in a bad financial situation, poor health, or the victim of a natural disaster, you’re on your own.

The upside is you get to keep more of your money. Instead of the government determining where your dollars go, you decide where to put them.

Think about it. If you had to pay less in federal taxes, where would you invest it?

The other day, I texted a pastor friend who was exhausted and worn out.

He and his wife had recently taken one of their elderly parents into their home, so a lot of free time had gone out the door.

I wanted to gift them a small donation so they could go on a fun date, see a movie, or enjoy a nice dinner out.

The gift wasn’t much, but it was a random act of generosity and it meant a lot to them.

Random Acts of Generosity

This is one of the ways we can spice up our giving—by being creative!

Because my friends are pastors, I could have easily tithed to their church. Instead, I wanted to give them something personal, so they could have fun.

As Christians, we tend to think of generosity in simple ways—like tithing to your church or giving to your favorite charity.

Both of these options are important, but we forget that we can select individuals out of our own free will and give plentifully!

This week, I want you to think of someone you can bless. What do they need? Is there a unique way you can honor them?

Brainstorm some ideas with the Lord, then surprise your target.

Social security started off as a noble idea, but did you know when it was first introduced, many Americans didn’t want it?

The program was pushed through by the Roosevelt administration in the 1930s and was labeled by conservative opponents as “socialist overreach.”

In all fairness, after the Great Depression, large swaths of the public were ready for a change. The appetite for a safety net had been growing for a while, especially in Europe.

The Depression in 1929 wiped out the wealth of millions of American families. Unemployment was at a gut-wrenching 25% (today it’s at 4%). Many in the public felt that something needed to be done, and that burden fell on the government.

Most of us have heard stories about the Zimbabwean hyperinflation crisis. It’s one of history’s most heartbreaking accounts of economic mismanagement.

Although there are worse examples, Zimbabwe is one of the most famous instances with its 100 trillion bank note, which went viral after widespread circulation in news stories.

Before its fall, Zimbabwe was extremely prosperous. Like Venezuela and Argentina, it was rich in natural resources and had massive foreign investment. The problems came later after a series of short-sighted financial decisions that bankrupted the country.

Authors Philip Haslam and Russel Lamberti take us through this tragic downfall in When Money Destroys Nations. First published in 2014, the book is composed of three sections: What Happened to Zimbabwe and How, Personal Accounts of Survivors of Hyperinflation, and What Western Countries Can Do To Avoid A Similar Fate.

What Happened to Zimbabwe and How

What I found most alarming, and probably the highlight of this book, is how the authors laid out what happened to bring Zimbabwe to such a vulnerable position. Starting off as an extremely prosperous nation, Zimbabwe’s newly elected leaders acted quickly to solidify power. Among these steps were short-sighted decisions like:

• Getting involved in a costly war with the Congo.

• Promising entitlement programs that the country couldn’t afford.

• Printing exorbitant amounts of money to navigate financial crises.

Each of these steps occurred over the course of several decades and eventually led to the currency’s collapse in 2009. What’s terrifying is that the crash didn’t happen at all once. Each decision compounded on the another until the chickens finally came home to roost.

Personal Accounts of Survivors of Hyperinflation

We have it so good here in the United States, Europe, and Canada. We have no idea how bad things can get. When economies fail and the value of money plummets, true anarchy sets in. Simple errands like running to the grocery store for butter become a nightmare.

In seasons of hyperinflation, the price of groceries can double every twenty-four hours. This can trigger a panic, which leads to excessive hoarding, empty store shelves, and the collapse of the supply chain.

In When Money Fails, Halam and Lamberti paint a grim picture by interviewing actual survivors of Zimbabwe’s crisis. They give true accounts of how families navigated daily life.

Here are just a few examples:

• Having to stand in line for hours at the grocery store while workers calculated the exhorbient prices of food. Imagine having to calculate the cost of groceries while prices change in line!

• Having to sell products like meat on the black market. Because of supply chain issues and farm confiscation, food items like meat became extremely rare. Families had to reach out to friends to find out when black market dealers would come into town, then sneak out so the government wouldn’t arrest them.

• Losing basic infrastructure like clean water and sewage. Because of the lack of a stable currency, valuable workers like engineers went unpaid. Most of these high income earners fled the country, leaving key municipal services to disintegrate.

What Western Countries Can Do To Avoid A Similar Fate

In their final section, Haslam and Lamberti cover practical steps people used to protect themselves against hyperinflation. Thankfully, I don’t see this happening in the United States, Europe, and Canada, but it’s good to know the strategies just in case.

Among the author’s recommendations was the most obvious—to flee the country. When people realize their country is headed toward destruction (like Venezuela most recently), the best option is to leave. We saw this in recent years with the massive influx of Venezuelan migrants to other countries after their economy’s collapse.

Unfortunately, not everyone is able to leave. Sometimes the only option is to stay and weather the storm. For those who remained in Zimbabwe, families survived by finding safe communities, getting foreign currency from abroad, or converting their cash into real, tangible assets. The most popular assets during the Zimbabwean crisis included:

• Food

• Fuel

• Foreign Currency

Gold, interestingly, wasn’t valued because people had no use for it! Consumable items like food and fuel were much more desired.

Conclusion

Although I don’t believe hyperinflation will hit the United States, Europe, or Canada, I do think that knowing the strategies that people use to survive is helpful.

One frightening thought is when the authors pointed out that nearly every failed decision by the Zimbabwean government has been repeated by the West (the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan).

If we stay on the same track of involving ourselves in costly wars, promising welfare benefits that we can't afford, and printing endless amounts of money, we will find ourselves heading toward uncertain times, and it won’t be pretty.

We hear often that young Americans are trending towards socialism. But what does that even mean?

Here are some insights from a 2025 poll:

Their survey found that 53% of Americans aged 18-39 would like to see a democratic socialist candidate win the 2028 presidential election, while 76% of respondents agree that ‘major industries like health care, energy, and big tech should be nationalized to give more control and equity to the people.’

Later in the piece, I found:

Polling data suggests that Americans associate socialism with equality. According to a 2021 George Mason survey, young people believe socialism is more conducive to ‘social justice, equal opportunity, and economic fairness,’ despite acknowledging that capitalism was superior for economic growth and job creation. A 2018 Gallop poll found that while socialism was predominantly understood in the 1940’s as government ownership of business, today it primarily connotes equality-both in rights and distribution.

The more I dig into the data, the more I discover that young Americans simply desire a chance to succeed. They believe the current ‘system’ has failed and see the welfare state as an opportunity to receive a financial ‘leg up.’

But will socialism be the change that saves them?

For the past few months, the U.S. has reassured us of an approaching deal with Iran, only to have these talks flounder.

The constant back and forth has brought a lot of anxiety. But I want us to take heart: both parties have a lot at stake in this conversation.

In order to maintain leverage, both teams are acting tough.

At some point — probably before the midterms — I suspect a deal will be reached. Why? Because the republicans cannot afford to have the war hanging over their heads. If the flow of oil isn’t stabilized, it will be political suicide.

Where are the talks now?

As of yesterday, the Iranians are taking a break from talks to honor their fallen leader, Khamenei. Qatari mediators are scrambling to set up another meeting.

In the meantime, the Iranians continue to charge tolls on vessels that pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. has combatted this tactic with an offer to unfreeze billions of dollars in oversees assets. We’ll see if this works.

What does this mean for us?

Unfortunately, without a quick solution, I expect oil prices to rise even further. Of course, the U.S. negotiators could pull a rabbit out of their hats and bring this crisis to an end, but I expect oil costs to increase. Here are my thoughts overall:

Either way, let’s pray for peace. People are really starting to feel it out there, and some good news would go a long way this summer.

I was reading a book on hyperinflation and it got me thinking, when the value of money goes down, how do we protect our wealth?

The easiest way is to convert a portion of your cash into hard assets. That way, as demand for money collapses, you have a physical commodity that people want to get ahold of.

The most popular options that Americans use are gold, silver, and real estate. You probably already have some of these in your portfolio.

But what happens when things get really bad? When the demand for money gets so low that you actually have to use hard assets to conduct trade, secure food, and support your family?

God willing we’ll never experience this in the United States, but given our government’s affinity for printing money, starting costly wars, and expanding the welfare state, it’s not an impossible option.

Greetings Prosperous Soul,

The devourer gets mentioned a lot in sermons about the tithe. Typically, it’s used as a way to hold churchgoers hostage. Tithe to your local pastor or the devourer will get you!

While I do think there’s a spiritual component to the tithe, and God wants us to give, the devourer represents something more than an evil spirit that harasses us if we turn off our generosity.

In my mind, the devourer is a spiritual and scientific law of attrition that impacts our lives as mortal beings. Let’s take a look at this phenomenon.

The devourer in Scripture

The devourer is mentioned in Malachi as a consequence for those who hold back their generosity from the Lord. Scripture says:

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the LORD of hosts. —Malachi 3:10-11 ESV

In some translations, the word devourer is switched out for pests or insects or even disease.

Seen in this light, the devourer feels more like a spiritual law or condition, similar to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which points to the inevitability of degeneration and decay.

Giving and saving

The Lord shows us two strategies that can protect us from this law of attrition. The first is giving.

In Malachi, God tells us that honoring the tithe leads to Him rebuking the devourer, saying, I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the LORD of hosts.

While I don’t think we can give our way into immortality, we can certainly rebuke aspects of the devourer by exercising our ability to give.

The second option we can turn to is savings.

With savings, we can build a hedge of protection around us that minimizes the damage caused by unexpected events.

Just look back to Genesis when Joseph saved a portion of Egypt’s grain before the famine. What could have been a devastating collapse for Egypt, and human kind, ended up being a rescue for those in need.

Both of these instances show us that giving (honoring God’s heart for generosity) and saving (preparing for difficult times) can delay the devourer (or at least minimize its damage).

Conclusion

While I don’t think there’s a specific spirit roaming around seeking to gobble up our wealth, I do think that in this fallen world, waste comes at us, and it can diminish our financial standing.

If you’re concerned about falling prey to the devourer, turn on your generosity and savings. God promises to protect us when we give, and a well-timed savings strategy can shield us in times of trouble.

Greetings Sozo Peeps,

The other day, I was praying for a family member’s healing, and I got so discouraged!

I realized that I’d been contending for this breakthrough for five years, and I still hadn’t seen any fruit.

Was God not listening to my cries?

On the contrary, I think He had heard me, but for whatever reason, the answer had been delayed. But how does that even happen?

Delayed Answers

In the book of Daniel, an angel explains that God’s answer to a prayer had been hindered by demonic activity.

The angel described how the Prince of Persia (a demonic principality) had held him back. It was only when a higher-ranking angel intervened that he was set free:

“... Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.” — Daniel 10:12–14 NIV

Interestingly, God’s answer was dispatched as soon as Daniel prayed. But it took almost one month for the message to break through!

Contending for Your Breakthrough

How long have you been waiting for an answer from God? Days, months, or years?

Regardless of how long it’s been, don’t give in to hopelessness. God’s answer has already been dispatched. It’s just a matter of getting it into your hands.

Let’s pray:

Holy Spirit, I ask that You send Your highest-ranking angels to step in and bring closure to our long-awaited prayers. Bring breakthrough to any areas that have been delayed, forgotten, or abandoned. Release Your answers so that we can walk in our divine calling and bring Your Kingdom to earth. I pray this in Jesus’ Name, amen.
