Here’s the thing about awards. I’ve never built anything at Ridley Academy chasing a trophy. Not once. One of the most emotional moments for me as a teacher is not watching someone play perfectly

It’s watching someone realize they’ve become a different person

Not overnight

Not dramatically

But slowly

Quietly

Over time

Recently, one of our students at Ridley Academy, Majella Vitto, completed the course

And her message genuinely moved me

Not because she talked about becoming flawless

Not because she talked about talent

But because her words captured something I think many adult piano students experience without fully realizing it:

Learning piano changes you far beyond music

When people first begin this journey, they usually think they’re learning:
chords
scales
rhythm
technique
songs

And of course, those things matter

But after years of teaching, I’ve noticed something deeper happening underneath all of it

There’s something I’ve noticed after years of teaching piano.

Most people don’t quit because they lack talent.

They quit because, somewhere along the way, they quietly begin doubting themselves.

Not dramatically
Not all at once

It happens slowly

At first, learning piano feels exciting.

Every new chord feels magical
Every song feels like progress
Everything feels possible

But then something changes

The progress becomes less obvious
The excitement becomes quieter
And confidence doesn’t grow as quickly as people expected

This is the stage almost nobody talks about

The stage where:
You’re still practicing
You’re still trying
but internally… You start wondering if you’re really progressing at all

And honestly?

I think this is where many adult piano students struggle the most

Not technically

Emotionally

Recently, during one of our Ridley Academy Monthly Calls, a student shared something incredibly honest with me

She almost didn’t join the call

Not because she didn’t care

But because she thought:

“Is there really anything more to say about the challenge?”

And I think that feeling is more common than people realize

Sometimes, after a while, we stop expecting breakthroughs

We assume:
We’ve already heard it before
We’re progressing too slowly
or maybe we’re simply “not musical enough.”

But she showed up anyway

And during the call, she asked a question

Not a perfect question

Not a polished question

Just an honest one

And afterward, she shared something beautiful:

“Sometimes the reward for showing up takes longer than you could ever imagine.”

That line stayed with me

Because I believe it describes learning music perfectly

We live in a world obsessed with fast results

Fast progress
Fast confidence
Fast transformation

But music has never worked that way

Real piano growth is quieter than people expect

Sometimes growth looks like:
practicing even when it feels repetitive
asking questions while still feeling unsure
continuing before confidence fully arrives
showing up even when part of you wants to disappear quietly

And strangely enough…

Those are often the moments that matter most

One of my favorite parts of her message was this:

She acknowledged the people who:
struggle to show up
don’t yet feel ready to ask questions

They are still searching for the confident piano player inside themselves

And I want to say something directly to those people

You are not behind

You are not failing because you feel uncertain

Confidence is not the starting point of learning piano

It’s usually the result of continuing long enough to see what you’re truly capable of

I’ve seen this so many times over the years

Students who believe they’re progressing slowly…

Only to realize months later that they:
hear music differently
understand chords differently
approach the piano differently
and most importantly… believe in themselves differently

Not because of one giant breakthrough

But because they stayed

And sometimes…

The bravest thing a musician can do…

is simply to continue showing up

Even imperfectly

Even quietly

Even before they fully believe in themselves

Because often…

The moment you almost stop showing up…

is the exact moment you needed most

But here’s the truth:

This student didn’t come in with confidence.
She came in with doubt.

She had played years ago as a child, but had forgotten almost everything — how to read music, how to understand scales, how to connect the pieces.

At first, even the structure of the course didn’t make sense to her.

Why theory?
Why not just jump straight into songs?

But she stayed.

And that’s the difference.

She kept showing up.
She played simple pieces.
She allowed herself to be a beginner again.

And then… something shifted.

The moment every musician waits for.

It clicked.

Not because it was easy.
But because she stayed long enough for understanding to catch up.

And then she did something beautiful.

She chose a piece that meant something to her — Moonlight Sonata.

Not just as a technical goal…
but as a connection to her past.
To memory.
To emotion.

And now?

At 76 years old, she is playing it again.

Working toward mastering it.

Not as a dream.
But as a reality.

That’s what this journey is about.

Not proving anything to anyone.
Not becoming the best.

But rediscovering something that was always yours.

She said that the piano has become her comfort.

And also something that excites her every single day.

Now and then, a student shares something that goes far beyond music.

Not a technique.
Not a breakthrough at the piano.
But a shift in thinking.

Elycia recently shared something that struck me deeply.

She realized that the problem wasn’t the course.
It wasn’t the material.
It wasn’t even the questions she was asking.

It was the frame of reference she brought to the experience.

And that is one of the most important realizations a person can have — not just in music, but in life.

Because so often, we come into something new already convinced it won’t work.

We ask questions not to understand…
But to confirm our doubt.

We look for gaps…
instead of trusting the process.

And without realizing it, we create the very frustration we’re trying to escape.

But then something shifts.

We stop asking, “Why don’t I get this yet?”
And we start asking, “What happens if I stay with this?”

That’s the moment everything changes.

Elycia also said something that I believe many people quietly feel but rarely admit:

She didn’t think she was ready.

She felt like she had to earn discipline before starting.
Like she needed to become someone else first… and only then begin.

But that’s not how growth works.

You don’t become disciplined and then start.
You start… and that’s how discipline is built.

You don’t wait until you feel ready.
You move — and readiness follows.

And this is where most people get stuck.

They aim for achievement.
They aim for perfection.
They aim for a version of success that doesn’t allow mistakes.

But real growth doesn’t live there.

It lives in showing up when you don’t feel like it.
In making mistakes and continuing anyway.
In allowing yourself to be a student — fully, honestly, and without apology.

Elycia said something else that stayed with me.

What motivates her doesn’t always allow her to make mistakes.

And that’s something many people carry.

The belief that mistakes mean failure.
That struggle means you’re not cut out for it.

But the truth is the opposite.

If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not actually learning.
If it feels uncomfortable, you’re probably exactly where you need to be.

There’s a quote she shared that captures this beautifully:

“I don’t fear the man who can kick a thousand times. I fear the man who can kick one time for a thousand days.”

That’s it.

Not intensity.
Not talent.
Not perfection.

Consistency.

Showing up.
Again and again.
Even when it’s not perfect.

Even when it’s messy.

Even when you don’t fully understand yet.

Because the people who stay with the process…
Are the ones who eventually transform.

Now and then, a student shares something that reminds me why mentorship matters so much.

Recently, Susan reflected on a realization she had after one of our mentorship classes. It wasn’t about mastering a scale or playing something faster. It was something deeper.

She realized that this journey she’s on with music has become two journeys at the same time.

On one side, she is learning piano for herself — developing her musical understanding, improving her playing, and discovering new layers of expression.

But on the other side, something else has been quietly unfolding.

She’s learning how to teach music.

That insight is powerful because music has always been something passed from one person to another. Every musician eventually becomes a bridge — someone who helps another person discover the same beauty they once discovered themselves.

Susan shared how meaningful the mentorship classes have become for her each week. Not just for the exercises or the techniques, but for the perspectives and ideas that come from learning together.

Every once in a while, a student shares something that reminds me why music exists beyond practice, beyond progress, beyond performance.

Mervi recently reflected on an experience that went far deeper than learning how to cover a song. As she revisited "What a Wonderful World," she found herself reconnecting with a moment from her past — a memory of loss, vulnerability, and quiet grief, paired with the song playing in a hospital corridor.

Moments like that don’t live in the intellect.
They live in the body.
In the heart.

Music has a way of finding us again — sometimes years later — and meeting us exactly where we are. It doesn’t erase what we’ve lived through, but it can gently soften what we carry. It can remind us that beauty and pain can exist in the same breath… and that neither one cancels out the other.

What moved me deeply about Mervi’s reflection was the way she described rediscovering the softer, more conversational side of music — the part that listens before it speaks. The part that doesn’t rush to impress, but dares to be present. That awareness is the doorway to real expression.

There’s a moment every musician waits for — the moment when theory stops living in your head and finally starts living in your hands.

Jonathan recently shared a reflection that captured this perfectly. He spoke about practicing two-handed chords every day, experimenting with arpeggios, shaping his own song at the piano, and suddenly realizing that the “something missing” he’d been feeling… wasn’t missing anymore.

That moment matters.

Because so many students spend months — sometimes years — collecting information about music without ever feeling like they’re actually making music. They learn shapes, names, progressions, and concepts… but the connection between theory and expression hasn’t quite landed yet.

Sometimes it looks like trying three different ways to voice the same idea.

But that’s the work.

Regular practice doesn’t just reduce mistakes — it builds relationships. With your hands. With the keyboard. With the sound you’re creating. And when that relationship forms, confidence follows naturally.

One detail that really stood out to me is that Jonathan decided to fully step into the experience — to come to Nashville and live this journey more deeply. When someone moves from “learning” to experiencing, something shifts. The music becomes embodied. Personal. Real.

That reflection reminded me of something I tell students often:

Real progress doesn’t come from rushing forward.
It comes from slowing down enough to actually understand what you’re doing.

Scales, drills, hand coordination — these aren’t glamorous. They don’t sound like songs right away. But they are the roots. And without strong roots, nothing truly grows.

What moved me most about this student’s reflection was not how “advanced” he sounded — but how grounded he was in the process. He wasn’t chasing shortcuts. He wasn’t trying to skip steps. He was choosing to do the work properly, patiently, and with presence.

Now and then, a student puts into words something I’ve felt about music my entire life.

Peg recently shared a reflection that stopped me in my tracks. She described music not as notes or rules, but as frequency that creates emotional impact — almost magically. And that’s exactly it. Music isn’t just something we learn. It’s something we feel. Something that moves through us.

What touched me most was her story of being drawn to music at a young age — how a single sound, a French horn fanfare from Camelot, could awaken something deep inside her. That kind of response isn’t intellectual. It’s emotional. It’s human. It’s the part of us that recognizes music before we ever try to explain it.

Over time, many of us learn to approach music through layers of structure, terminology, and “shoulds.” We’re told what’s correct, what’s allowed, what’s proper. And while structure has its place, it can sometimes bury the very thing that made us fall in love with music in the first place.

There’s a moment every musician hopes for —
the moment when things stop feeling scattered and suddenly connect.

Gerd experienced one of those moments recently, and it perfectly captures why understanding matters far more than effort alone.

A few months ago, he tried to play “Fly Me to the Moon.” Like many students, he loved the song but struggled to memorize the chords. The rhythm felt challenging. Progress felt slow. It was one of those situations where you’re trying hard… but something still isn’t landing.

Then, after continuing his studies and going through Level 5 for a second time, something shifted.

There are moments when music isn’t about meeting a deadline, completing a challenge, or checking a box.

Pamela reminded me of that in a beautiful way.

As the Christmas season came and went, Pamela didn’t complete the Christmas Song Challenge in the way she originally intended. But instead of turning away from the piano — or turning that into disappointment — she chose something far more meaningful.

She shared her Solstice Song.

What followed wasn’t judgment or comparison. It was a connection.

Her fellow students responded with kindness, generosity, and understanding. They didn’t hear imperfections — they heard honesty. They didn’t focus on what wasn’t finished — they felt what was true.

Pamela described how her song carried what was in her heart through her hands at the piano. Even with a vocal that felt less than perfect and piano playing still in progress, the emotion came through.

And that is the point.

Music doesn’t exist to prove we’re ready.
It exists to help us express what words can’t.

At the time, Pamela was also navigating real challenges — battling asthma and adjusting to new medications. Her energy was limited. Her voice wasn’t always cooperating. Still, she chose to create. Still, she chose to share.

And then Silent Night appeared.

Patricia’s mother suffered a massive stroke when Patricia was in high school. In an instant, speech was taken away. Mobility changed. Life reorganized itself around patience, resilience, and love. For years, her mother communicated through her eyes, showed up through sheer will, and attended every graduation and every chorus concert.
