Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has threatened social media giant X with a $910,000 fine if it does not immediately remove a shared article by a US-based feminist that raised concerns about an Australian Medical Association Victoria staff member who has regularly generated and posted extreme transgender pornography in public online forums.

The action against feminist writer Genevieve Gluck is the latest in a series of cases Julie Inman-Grant has chosen to pursue against critics of transgender ideology, all of which the eSafety Commissioner has so far lost, at considerable expense to the taxpayer.

Ms Gluck wrote a Substack post in 2024 linked on X regarding AMA Victoria’s employment of a staff member, entitled “Trans-Identified Male Hired by Australian Medical Association Sharing Self-Made BDSM Porn on Social Media”.

The employee – whom The Australian has chosen not to name – remains in the role, which involves liaising with AHPRA and medical colleges.

The eSafety Commissioner on Tuesday wrote to Elon Musk-owned social media giant X, citing a complaint from the employee that claims Ms Gluck’s post contravenes the Online Safety Act, in that it constitutes “serious cyber-abuse meant to cause physical or psychological harm, surpassing mere offence”.

The post featured screenshots of graphic self-made pornography and lewd comments the employee had publicly posted on sites including OnlyFans, FetLife and X.

Ms Gluck used male pronouns to refer to the biological male, who identifies as a trans woman, and questioned the employee’s fitness for the AMA Victoria role.

The article also detailed the AMA’s controversial support for gender-affirming care, including the use of hormones to halt puberty in children.

“(The employee) was hired by the AMA,” Ms Gluck wrote.

“Yet disturbingly, (the employee) has been producing and posting extreme pornography of himself on social media for years, and has referenced the genre of ‘forced feminisation’ – a type of pornography that eroticises men being forced to wear lingerie, take female hormones, and perform sexual acts while pretending to be a woman.

“(The employee) also operates an OnlyFans account where he … posted images of his anus and genitals, as well as selfies he took while wearing lingerie.

“(The employee’s) public profile describes him as ‘pansexual, princess by day, slut by night’, and lists his fetishes.

“Among the dozens of sexual activities listed are bondage, degradation, voyeurism, gang bangs, sadism and sex in public.”

Ms Gluck told The Australian her article came in the context of years of “pointing out the clear overlap between male sexual fetishes and what is called ‘gender-affirming care’ ”.

“I have uncovered links between the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and a sadomasochistic online forum dedicated to producing erotica about chemical and surgical castration, primarily of boys,” she said.

“My intent in writing the article … was to shine a light on this pattern, as (the employee) has discussed his interest in a fetish subgenre known as ‘forced feminisation’, which sexualises male body modification via surgery and hormone use.

“It ought to alarm lawmakers that men with fetishes for pretending to be female are having a say in medical protocols which advocate for the chemical castration of minors through the administration of drugs euphemistically called ‘puberty blockers’.”

In response to a series of questions about the employee’s role, including whether it had involved any influence over AMA policy on gender medicine, an AMA Victoria spokeswoman clarified that the state branch of the AMA is a separate legal entity to the federal body.

“Neither AMA Victoria nor the employee has had any involvement in the development of the AMA policies or positions referred to in your questions,” the spokeswoman said.

“Also, the employee to whom you refer is not involved in any policy work at AMA Victoria.”

Ms Gluck said it was not the first time her work had been “censored” by the eSafety Commissioner.

In 2023, the Commissioner issued a take-down order on an article Ms Gluck’s gender-critical news and opinion site Reduxx published, which revealed the identity of a Sydney-based transgender soccer player, who had been the subject of mass complaint after allegedly injuring female players while competing on a women’s team.

“The Australian government permits men to act out their fetishes on an unwilling public, even to the point of physical endangerment, yet those who point this out are heavily fined and punished,” Ms Gluck said.

“Unfortunately Australia has form in this area, as there are currently multiple cases of women being dragged through the court system for stating the obvious: men are never women, and often the men who pretend to be women are so invested in sadomasochism that they have made it their entire identity.”

Last year, both X and Canadian activist “Billboard Chris” Elston won their Administrative Review Tribunal cases after the eSafety Commissioner ordered X to take down a post by Mr Elston, arguing it “misgendered” former ACON health director Teddy Cook, and referenced Mr Cook’s use of private social media accounts to post material relating to bestiality, public nudity, bondage parties and transgender orgies in a manner that constituted “cyber-abuse”.

In response to a series of questions, a spokeswoman for the eSafety Commissioner said the Commissioner had initially assessed the AMA Victoria employee’s complaint “as not meeting the legislated Adult Cyber Abuse threshold and advised the complainant eSafety would therefore not take action”.

“The complainant exercised their right to appeal eSafety’s decision in the Administrative Review Tribunal,” the spokeswoman said.

“Based on additional material provided by the complainant to the ART for their deliberation, eSafety reconsidered the material and issued a removal notice.

“For privacy reasons, eSafety is not in a position to comment further on this individual case.”

The Australian understands the “additional material” comprised evidence of the harm allegedly caused by Ms Gluck’s post.

The employee did not respond to a request for comment.

Free Speech Union of Australia director Reuben Kirkham, whose organisation represented Mr Elston and Ms Baumgarten, said the order to remove Ms Gluck post represented “another inappropriate notice issued by the eSafety Commissioner”.

“If this goes to trial, the notice will almost certainly be overturned by the Administrative Review Tribunal,” Dr Kirkham said.

“The eSafety Commissioner has lost every single case we have brought against her office. We are happy to help anyone else who is the target of one of these censorship notices.

“Despite heavy criticism from the Chief Justice of the Federal Court in Celine Baumgarten’s case in relation to her inappropriate litigation conduct and practices, the Commissioner appears not to have learned and continues to waste public money.”

Dr Kirkham said it was concerning that the resources used to fight such cases were being “diverted from genuine cyber abuse victims, who the Commissioner seemingly chooses not to help for ideological reasons.”

“This is another reason why the eSafety Commissioner’s office should be abolished. It is an activist body pursuing petty grievances,” he said.”

“As well as the relevant legislation, the Commissioner appears to have again demonstrated an unfamiliarity with the Streisand effect. The upshot is more Australians will find out about the underlying story, namely inappropriate appointments being made to the medical regulatory body’s staff.”

For much of the current century Australia has conducted an immigration experiment almost unique among developed nations – but the flaws in our model have guaranteed an electoral backlash with resets, reforms and pure politics about to rock the system.

Consider the big picture. Over 2000 to 2024 Australia’s population, heavily driven by immigration, has grown by 42 per cent, an astonishing figure nearly three times the average growth of OECD industrial nations.

This percentage increase is around twice that of the US and Britain and is ahead of other strong immigration countries such as Canada and New Zealand.

At the same time there has been a revolution in people movement to Australia – it is now dominated by temporary visa holders, not the long-established and prized permanent immigration program running this year at 185,000.

Just 20 years ago Peter Costello as treasurer said: “Australia has never been a guest worker country. We’ve never been a country where we bring you in and ship you out. I don’t think Australians want to see that.” But current policy and practice heads in that direction. The permanent immigration intake most people have known for most of their lives is now sidelined by another model – a temporary model with temporary migrants now embedded across the economy.

The Menzies Research Centre reports there are now about 2.9 million temporary migrants in Australia, about 10 per cent of the current population of 28 million.

The main category is international students, now running at about 515,000 – and that’s a reduced level – with some of our best universities having nearly 50 per cent of their enrolments being overseas students.

The other remarkable feature in our immigration legacy is that 32 per cent of our population, or 8.8 million people, have been born overseas, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Indeed, the 2021 census showed that more than half of Australian residents, 51.5 per cent, were born overseas or had one parent born overseas. This figure would be even higher today.

The comparable foreign-born figure for the US is only 14 per cent, less than half Australia’s, with the US often wrongly mistaken as being a stronger migrant nation than Australia. In truth, there is no comparison. The average foreign-born percentage for OECD nations is also 14 per cent, far below our figure.

Taking the easy road to economic growth

All the above results reveal a sustained transformation in Australia’s society, culture and economy. While migrants are indispensable to our labour market, over the past decade our GDP growth has been driven by population, not productivity, a decisive event. The nation has taken the easy road to economic growth and is paying a devastating price – immigration as a substitute for productivity means per capita income – that is, wages and living standards – has languished, leading to an impatient, disillusioned and angry public mood.

Australia’s immigration story runs far in advance of most other nations and drives social change at a rapid rate. Many people celebrate such diversity; many others believe that Australia’s character and values are being lost. Both feelings demand respect.

Immigration is in overreach. It faces multiple problems, the result of weak management and lack of vision. Recent numbers are too high, the skills program demands a reset, growth in temporary migration is unsustainable and devoid of policy control, while there is rising concern about the values set of a minority of the intake.

This situation has created an inexcusable gift to Pauline Hanson, courtesy of the Albanese government. Labor deserves much of the blame and should be held to account. Hanson has captured the wave of concern about immigration with polls over the past six months (Newspoll, Resolve Monitor, the Lowy Institute and the Institute of Public Affairs) all showing majority support for a lower intake and sentiment in the plus-50 per cent to 65 per cent zone to cut numbers.

Immigration turning point

Many Western nations now face a turning point in their immigration policies. While the foundations of Australia’s program are stronger than those of most nations, a showdown is coming. The real issue is whether changes will be modest or radical or sensible. The worst mistake the pro-immigration progressive movement can make is to pretend nothing is wrong and that such criticisms are merely racism, a denial sure to be counterproductive.

The coming collision is driven by three simultaneous and inflammatory factors. The biggest is the housing crisis with many young people priced out of the market, feeding intergenerational frictions. Labor is now promoting tax changes in next week’s budget, while Angus Taylor tells Inquirer that immigration will be a “key feature” in his reply to the budget.

“You cannot bring people to this country if you don’t have the houses for them. It’s that simple,” the Opposition Leader says.

“Migration levels must be capped by the availability of housing. That’s common sense but it’s not what we have seen. Labor has done the opposite with an unpreceded escalation in immigration numbers, yet housing supply has gone backwards.”

Taylor says the ratio of migrants to housing is running double over the previous figure. He says: “The situation is unsustainable and it’s no wonder young Australians can’t get into a home. For the year we are going into, they are running immigration numbers 80,000 above the targets and housing 70,000 a year below the targets. And Labor’s answer is to put more taxes on it. Seriously, who thought that up?”

He will attack Labor’s intergenerational tax changes by saying the real problem is immigration. Taylor’s pledge to cap migration flows by housing availability points to a decisive shift in immigration policy and politics. It follows a similar move by Canada that cut migration numbers and foreign students in a desperate bid to reduce housing costs – the result has been a shrinking population with benefits for the housing market and affordability but with related evidence that high migration was not the sole cause of the problem.

The second factor in Australia’s political debate has been the immediate leap in the net overseas migration numbers with the border opening after the Covid freeze. The NOM hit 538,340 in 2022-23 and 429,000 the following year. These numbers received massive and damaging political prominence, but they measure all arrivals and departures and should not be confused with the formal policy. The government is desperate, given the political optics, to cut them but the task has proven difficult, Jim Chalmers has conceded the current planned reduction to 225,000 won’t be reached.

Social cohesion is fraying

The third element has been the erosion of social cohesion with an entrenched antisemitism that repudiates our multicultural ethic and that culminated in the Bondi massacre of 15 people and the creation of the royal commission.

The Middle East conflict has resounded in this country with pro-Palestinian protests, open support for pro-Hamas terrorism, attacks on Jewish people and almost free licence given to radical Islamists and preachers endorsing violence against Jews – events that have led to a profound rethink within conservative politics in this country.

In his recent Australian Values Migration Plan, Taylor, after declaring his support for immigration, said people with the “wrong motivations” who had “subversive intent” were being allowed entry. The upshot is that Australians “can see the country they love changing for the worse”.

Taylor says the nation cannot discriminate on nationality, race, gender or faith but must now discriminate “based on values”. He says migrants from liberal democracies have a greater likelihood of subscribing to our values – a claim that has provoked criticism and poses implementation difficulties.

In truth, reform of both numbers and of standards is a diabolically challenging mix. The apparent success of Hanson’s populist anti-immigration campaign complicates the task, given that Hanson polarises opinion. Taylor needs to win back voters from One Nation yet also differentiate the Liberals from One Nation. While One Nation is seen in the polls as the party best able to manage immigration, its real position is to throttle immigration in a way guaranteed to damage the country.

The multiple defects in the current immigration agenda have provoked multiple solutions – even from established champions of the program. Commentator and former senior immigration official Abul Rizvi said last month: “Three million temporary entrants are incompatible with the size of the current permanent intake.”

Immigration specialist and Australian National University emeritus professor of demography Peter McDonald has recently produced, along with ANU Migration Hub director Alan Gamlen, a blueprint for major change, warning that the growth in the temporary intake must be curbed and stabilised.

McDonald tells Inquirer: “We think the temporary population needs to be managed and stabilised. It’s about 1.7 million and there’s a tendency to think it’s going to go away. But this population is embedded in the economy. We estimate there’s roughly half a million temporary migrants working in skilled jobs. Temporary migrants are a high proportion of the labour force in aged care. We need to recognise we have an ongoing temporary population, not ignore it, which is the current kind of policy.

“We sleepwalked into this situation. Over the last 20 years both Labor and Coalition governments have made various changes leading to the temporary population continuing to grow. This country has a history of saying migration should be permanent only, so if we are going in this direction then we need to plan for our temporary population.”

In a recent analysis, Nico Louw from the Menzies Research Centre says the key to reducing immigration numbers lies in the temporary migrant category. The permanent program at 185,000, split between the skilled and family streams, is “only a small part” of the immigration story.

Temporary migration comprises students, working holiday makers and visitors. But international students dominate, with many staying for years and a significant number becoming citizens. Getting the temporary numbers down needs action on both sides of the equation – limiting arrivals and increasing departures.

Louw argues public sentiment is changing decisively on immigration: “Australians have historically been more willing to accept higher levels of legal migration when they believe the government has control of the borders” – this is the legacy of the border controls of the Howard and Abbott governments – “but this relationship has broken down, as legal migration surged at the same time as a rising cost of living, high housing costs and a sense of fragmenting social cohesion.”

In January this year official figures show there were 515,717 international students in Australia, a fall on the previous year, with China comprising 23 per cent and India 17 per cent. Before the 2025 election both Labor and the Coalition focused on lower student numbers in their efforts to return immigration overall to its pre-pandemic levels.

Australia’s university sector is moving towards a likely crisis over the reduction in international students, a cohort vital in delivering revenue for the higher education sector. The university sector has been stunningly incompetent in managing its interests and its image with the public and the political class in recent years. Having enjoyed, along with the mining industry, a generation of national income success wired into the Chinese market, the message now being sent is one of retreat.

The government is driven by the politics and the reality that, if reductions in numbers are essential, then the student intake is the obvious target. Whether Labor has the nous to protect the export industry, reduce the numbers and manage the consequences is doubtful.

The wider migrant story is the dominance of India and China. Recent official figures reveal the explosion of migrants from India with our Indian-born numbers now numbering 971,000, more than doubling over the past decade. India has now replaced England as the largest source nation of foreign-born residents. Chinese-born migrant numbers are 731,000, another substantial increase over the decade.

Australia, courtesy of immigration, has rapidly turned into one of the world’s most culturally and linguistically diverse Western nations. The 2021 census showed that one in four people (23 per cent) spoke a language other than English at home, the most common being Mandarin and Arabic. A total of 872,000 people self-reported speaking English “not well” or “not at all”.

Too much of the current debate ignores the Australian fertility crisis and the indispensable role of immigration in our tight labour market filled with job vacancies. Our current fertility rate has fallen to 1.42 compared with the 2.1 replacement level – this means the Australian people are deciding they have no economic option but a strong, ongoing immigration program.

But that program demands reform in our economic interests.

Former Treasury secretary Martin Parkinson, who reviewed the program in 2023, found that almost half of permanent migrants work below their skill level, despite one in three occupations facing worker shortages. The skills mismatch undermines both our economy and the immigration program. It needs to be urgently addressed.

Analysing the economics of the program, University of NSW Scientia professor Richard Holden tells Inquirer: “Australia has historically focused too much on GDP and too little on GDP per capita. It’s the latter which is the right measure of living standards. Immigration mechanically boosts GDP, but only boosts GDP per capita if immigrants are more highly skilled than average, or fill gaps in the labour market that aren’t being met domestically.

“The other element of confusion on immigration concerns temporary immigration. This can also be economically and socially valuable, but we must focus on steady-state levels, not the large outflows or inflows that occurred around the time of the pandemic. The Department of Home Affairs needs to make more accurate forecasts and a key element of this is developing a better picture of temporary migrant outflows. The quality of our national discussion about migration would be vastly improved and more constructive if we had accurate numbers.”

Yet there is a bigger issue because immigration is not just a policy. By definition immigration changes a nation because it changes numbers, people and culture. This is a decisive political event. The question then becomes: is it possible to substantially reform an immigration program that has become an integral component in our national identity?

This is the conundrum that Australia is about to face.

In a September 2025 paper authors Gamlen and Andrew Jaspan said that despite a global populist disruption around immigration, Australia was different. Reaching a remarkable conclusion, they wrote: “Migration in Australia is thus not just policy but part of the nation’s identity and state machinery: it is pre-political. This stability has shielded it from the immigration-driven turmoil seen in Britain with Brexit and in the US with Trump. Though Australia has more foreign-born residents than either, its debates are calmer, thanks to both national identity and long-term state capacity.”

These are revealing judgments pointing both to the confidence and complacency of the immigration establishment. It is true that immigration has borne exaggerated blame for many of our current ills from housing costs to political polarisation – yet it is equally true that it must bear some of the blame, that the current program is losing public support and that it is undermined by a range of policy mistakes.

Is genuine reform of immigration possible? The ruthless assessment of the Coalition’s prospects by RedBridge Group director Kos Samaras suggests it might be a bridge too far and that Australia is far different from the nation that initially voted for John Howard in 1996.

Samaras says Australia “has fundamentally changed who it is”. In the inner metropolitan seats the percentage of people who are foreign born or had a parent foreign born is now nearly 66 per cent.

“These voters are not looking for a cultural restoration project,” he says. Samaras seizes on the turning point that India is now replacing England as Australia’s largest overseas-born diaspora and warns that Taylor, in pitching to so-called “Australian values”, is not talking to the people he needs to win.

It is a fair warning. But there is no reason Indian and Chinese migrants should automatically shun the Liberals, nor is there any reason to think they would automatically oppose sensible immigration reform. But that is a bigger question that will need to be addressed in the Australian democracy.

Farrer flocks to Hanson and away from ‘disappointing’ major parties

Mark and Kendall van Beek joined the Nationals in October, but the card-carrying members of the ­junior Coalition party will be among thousands of locals who are set to vote for One Nation at the ­Farrer by-election.

The van Beek family are the faces of a groundswell in support for One Nation across the country, as the populist party answers a call the major parties have created through neglect and complacency in seats they once held safely for decades.

“The Nationals have previously had our best interests in mind,” Ms van Beek, 35, said. “But people are starting to realise that what we prioritise is not actually being prioritised by the (major) parties and it’s disappointing.

“I think that One Nation is a lot more popular than what some people think. It’s a matter of giving someone else a try who seems to be really adamant that they are aware of the issues that the people in the regions are facing.”

This 33-year-old mother of two says she never had much interest in politics, but struggling to find a rental, let alone pay the rent, forced her to ask, why am I voting for the same old parties.

I’m voting for One Nation because the housing crisis nearly made me and my two boys homeless.

Since 2022 I’ve almost become homeless three times with my two children Hunter, 13 and Elijah, 2.

I was one of the blessed ones that didn’t end up homeless but I was very close by days.

As someone with 10 plus years of a perfect rental history, never a missed payment, never a bad rental inspection, absolutely flawless, able to prove that I could pay rent on time.

I was knocked back multiple times.

I was applying for up to 50 to 100 homes.

I actually had to induce my pregnancy early with Elijah because of the housing crisis.

The reason being the owners were selling the rental I was living in around his due date. Which is fine, but I had to induce him early because I was due right on the date that I had to be out of the house.

Living on a single income since Hunter was two, things were never this hard back then.

I’m a working mother as well, so I’m not just sitting at home.

Rent has gone from around $300 for a three-bedroom house to where I’m now paying $500 for a house the same size with around the same income.

I’m struggling to buy groceries. My power bills are through the roof. I owe $3,900 to Energy Australia because running a heater in the winter is absolutely ridiculous.

Whether it’s Liberal or Labor, it seems to just be getting worse and worse and we just need a solid change, a factory reset.

After the Bondi attack Pauline Hanson really gained my attention.

I was seeing a few videos pop up on social media, before that I’d never been huge on politics but I think it was her passion that really drew me in.

I align with her policies and what she’s fighting for.

When she speaks, you can hear the passion, you can feel it.

Watching some of the other politicians they just seem so robotic. I’m sure they care, but they don’t care as much as what One Nation seems to care.

There’s a stigma around Pauline Hanson being racist and things like that.

But I would encourage people to go watch her videos in length, not short clips.

Watch more of her recent stuff, watch some of her old stuff, a lot of the things she’s been talking about have come to fruition.

I think there’s a lot of people who might think, “my friends are going to think I’m racist if I vote for Pauline Hanson” and things like that, because I know I’ve copped a bit of that from my own friends, which is absolutely not the case.

We need to focus on our own families and what we can do for our families and future generations and about other worldly matters after.

Buying a house is absolutely not on the radar for me, so I hate to think what it’s like for my children.

I fear for my kids if we keep going like this.

I fear that they won’t be able to feed their families and I fear for men having the pressure of providing for their families.

A lot of men are struggling, they’re absolutely working their butts off and it’s not enough.

In 2014, a young union official from Victoria called Paul Erickson met with Anthony Albanese, then a NSW frontbencher and powerbroker for Labor’s Left faction, at the Standard Hotel in Fitzroy. Over a few beers at a small table, overlooked by a poster reading “Vote 1, Boony for PM!” – a throwback to a Victoria Bitter ad filmed in the pub – Albanese was convinced to back the then 30-year-old to become the assistant national secretary of the Australian Labor Party. It would be one of the most important conversations of both men’s careers and the start of a long and prosperous friendship.

Five years later, Albanese – as opposition leader – would again back Erickson, this time for the top job at Labor HQ, making him Labor’s chief election campaign tactician. Erickson would go on to mastermind the party’s election victory in 2022 that swept Labor to power after almost a decade on the opposition benches, and made Albanese prime minister.

Three years later, he oversaw the campaign that delivered Albanese a second term with such a significant majority that a third term is almost a foregone conclusion. One political operative who has known Erickson for a long time says he is the greatest strategic mind of his generation. “I certainly don’t think Albo would be PM without him.”

The traditional view of how to win federal elections is simple: Win the day. Win enough days, you win the week. Win enough weeks, you win the campaign. They are typically run over five weeks with big announcements timed to help build momentum heading into polling day. But before last year’s election, Erickson took the view that this recipe was no longer fit for purpose.

About a year out from election day, he began a research deep-dive to determine which voters Labor needed to win over, and what narrative would resonate with them. “Testing this and developing this thinking directly with the prime minister, we came to the view that we needed the election to be about our offer for the next three years, not a referendum on our record or on the experiences people had had through the global inflation spike,” Erickson says. While the Coalition wanted to make the election about Labor’s economic management over the previous three years, Labor needed voters looking ahead at what the party would offer them next.

Working with the Prime Minister’s Office, Erickson set about developing a policy offering with one objective in mind – winning votes. What was developed had little in the way of economic or structural reform, but contained plenty of crowd-pleasers, among them the expansion of Medicare bulk billing at a cost of $8.5 billion, slashing 20 per cent off all existing student HECS/HELP debts at a cost of $16 billion and giving all first home buyers access to Labor’s 5 per cent home deposit scheme.

But perhaps the biggest change was the length of the campaign. While the official five-week battle would still happen, Erickson’s plan was for a six-month marathon that treated the campaign proper as the final sprint. The starter’s gun was fired in November 2024 when, at a rally in Adelaide, Albanese announced Labor’s policy of making fee-free TAFE permanent. From that moment, the government pivoted to full electioneering mode.

“We’re in a very fragmented information environment. There’s no shared media experience for all or much of the community any more,” Erickson says. Whereas 20 years ago, a politician could reach 90 per cent of their audience by dropping an announcement to the Sunday papers, getting it onto the nightly news on the ABC and commercial networks, and then backing it in with morning radio, “there just is no equivalent megaphone these days”.

This has led him to two key insights about campaigning: first, you have to “hammer away” at simple, key messages for three to six months before you can expect it to filter through to your audience. And you have to look wider to find that audience. Labor invited social media influencers to join the campaign trail for the first time, while dozens of junior government media advisers filled TikTok, Instagram and other social media channels with thousands of pieces of content. “The volume of output that you have to generate is much, much greater, and in a sense, you’re in a volume war,” Erickson says.

“The second insight, though, is that you still have to maintain a degree of authenticity, and you can’t be boring. Because in such a crowded information environment where you’re really in a constant battle simply to gain people’s attention, if you’re boring, you’re dead.”

Albanese has many sources of trusted advice, but, he tells The Australian Financial Review Magazine “none are more important outside the caucus than Paul”. Erickson’s place in the annals of Labor history was ensured when he helped deliver Albanese The Lodge in 2022, marking only the fifth time in a century Labor had won government from opposition.

Labor’s national secretary says he knew Labor would win a week before polling day, when Scott Morrison suddenly changed his messaging. “I know Australians know I can be a bit of a bulldozer when it comes to issues,” Morrison said. “I know there are things that are going to have to change with the way I do things. Because we’re moving into a different time. We’re moving into a time of opportunity.” Here was Morrison, Erickson realised, parroting Labor’s key lines about the opportunities of a better future. “[He was] repeating back to the country our campaign themes,” Erickson says.

Three years later, the Albanese government looked headed for electoral defeat after a single term in office. The polls were dire. And yet in a speech to the leadership of the Australian Council of Trade Unions in February, rather than listing seats at risk of falling, Albanese outlined Coalition seats he intended to win.

“No one could quite believe it,” says ACTU secretary Sally McManus, adding that, of course, he turned out to be right. Labor increased its majority from 78 to 94  seats at the May 3 poll, and ended the political careers of the Liberal and Greens party leaders. Rather than being plunged into a chaotic minority government, Labor is comfortably positioned to govern into the 2030s.

Success has many fathers, but within the ALP, Erickson is the one name that is always mentioned in the same breath as Albanese for people who can claim the win. “Not once would he succumb to the bits of hysteria that some people were engaging in,” says McManus of the lead-up to the 2025 federal election. “He was able to see the signal and not the noise, and that’s a big strength.”

Erickson, 42, is one of few people who can speak fearlessly to Albanese, and is listened to. Almost every senior Labor figure who spoke to AFR Magazine for this profile says they have never seen the same level of trust between a prime minister and a national secretary. “I just tell it to him straight when there are things that we need to talk about,” Erickson says of his dealings with Albanese. The depth of Erickson’s relationship with the prime minister, the cabinet and the labour movement earned him the No. 1 spot on AFR Magazine’s covert power list in 2025.

The main job of the ALP’s national secretary is to win elections and manage the party machine in between. Their power typically wanes after a poll, but Erickson is never too far from the heart of decision-making. This is a topic he’s reluctant to talk about, but when asked about his influence, it’s telling that his answer, and that given by Albanese, parrot each other: “We run an orderly cabinet-led government,” is how the PM puts it. Erickson does concede that he provides “ongoing advice” on the mood of the nation through the party’s research program.

Closer to elections, he also briefs the cabinet and caucus on where things stand. “You would provide input on a high level,” he says. “You do that more in a low-key and direct way.” One cabinet minister says you always pick up the phone if Erickson calls, which he’s known for doing sparingly. “He’s very deliberate and there’s no lack of clarity when Paul thinks you’re on the wrong track,” says Industry Minister Tim Ayres.

In talking to almost 20 current and former Labor MPs, staffers and labour movement figures who have worked alongside Erickson since he joined the party as a 20-year-old student in 2003, an image emerges of a high IQ, high EQ political operative whose campaigning style is defined by meticulous planning, unwavering discipline and a direct style of advice. You don’t get to be senior in politics without making enemies, and in the Labor Party, just being in a faction will put you offside with people you have never met. Yet even those from the Victorian Right – Erickson hails from the Victorian Left – have nothing negative to say about him.

That’s not to say his work does not attract critics. Labor’s strategy of identifying voters it needs to win and then building policies to woo them may be good politics, but it is debatable whether it makes good policy. Labor’s plan to slash $16  billion from student HECS/HELP “costs a fortune”, says veteran economist Chris Richardson, adding that it does nothing to boost productivity or real incomes.

“I get you have got to win elections, but it is the age-old tug of war between good politics and good policy. You can only do that for so long before you end up with stagnant real incomes and a society that is increasingly grumpy with each other.” Ashley Craig, a former economist at the Reserve Bank of Australia, now a researcher at the Australian National University, has described it as “subsidy for those who are tertiary educated, paid for by those who are not”.

Erickson is unrepentant. Labor is the only party that changes the country for the better, he says, and the way to do that is to win elections. “Big Labor reforms can be embedded and can endure if you keep renewing your mandate and stay in power for long enough, the other side of politics and the rest of the parliament ultimately have to concede the wisdom of our agenda,” says Erickson, citing Medicare as the exemplar of this philosophy.

The Coalition initially hated Medicare, yet “by the time you get to 1996, John Howard had to accept that Medicare was sacrosanct”. Talking to The Saturday Paper after the 2025 victory, Andrew Giles, Minister for Skills and Training, cited Robert A. Caro’s biography of US president Lyndon Johnson: “[He] had a single credo, it was this: ‘If you do everything, you’ll win’.” This, he says, captures Erickson’s style as a political campaigner.

Erickson himself cites Caro when asked about which books have most influenced his views. Notably, Caro’s works share a golden thread; they are about the acquisition and use of power. His Pulitzer Prize winner, The Power Broker, was a biography of American bureaucrat Robert Moses, who wielded unrivalled influence to reshape New York City. Caro’s current long-term project is a five-volume biography of Johnson. The titles of its already-published volumes include The Path to Power, Master of the Senate and The Passage of Power.

Albanese has stated his desire to make Labor the natural party of government in Australia. It is a plan in which Erickson’s campaigning skills are central. But after more than a decade in Labor’s national headquarters in Canberra, and with two federal election victories under his belt, one of the biggest guessing games in federal politics is what Erickson will do next. And if, as is speculated, he enters parliament, could he one day follow Albanese into The Lodge?

Speculation has grown in recent months that Labor’s election mastermind would soon announce his intention to run for Mark Dreyfus’ Melbourne seat of Isaacs, leaving the national secretary job vacant with no clear successor (Jennifer Light, Erickson’s sole deputy, announced late last year that she would be leaving around Christmas). Ayres jokes that it would be in Labor’s interests for Erickson to remain as its chief election strategist until 2100. Several other MPs say after the victories in 2022 and 2025, he can choose his own destiny. So what does Erickson have to say about it?

“[I have] thought a lot about that since the election, and talked about it with my family and I’ve decided to remain in my role and put my name forward to the national conference for another term as national secretary,” he says. That will ensure Erickson leads the Labor campaign in 2028 and will make him the longest-serving national secretary in Labor’s history. As for a future in the parliament, Erickson clearly has one in mind. “If the opportunity arose, we’d find a way to do the best thing for the party and for me to try to make that work,” he says.

When pressed about a career as an elected representative, Erickson becomes coy. House or Senate? “There’s no decision in front of me along those lines,” he says. Want to be prime minister one day? “No, I would [want] to be part of a team.” What about the cabinet? “Part of a team,” he repeats. The only thing that does seem certain is he will return to Victoria where his family, as well as that of his partner, Dimity Paul, are based. In early 2024, Erickson was mooted to enter the Senate after the death of Left faction ally Linda White, but he declined the opportunity.

Erickson’s whole career has been within the Labor and union movements. Should he enter parliament, he would meet the definition of a career politician, similar to Albanese (who has spent his entire working life in politics save for a brief stint as a cashier at the Commonwealth Bank). If this is a criticism, Erickson is unperturbed. “There are plenty of examples of very effective advocates who have made big contributions in the parliament and who have brought a depth of experience from their party,” he says. After all, plenty of people yearn for power, but few know what to do with it once they get it.

So what would he stand for? “[We have to build] an economy that works for working people,” he says, citing wages, working conditions and self-determination as key. Erickson is heavily influenced by his time working on an ACTU inquiry into insecure work, the findings of which went on to become the foundation of the industrial relations reforms Labor rammed through parliament at the start of its first term. “I’m a social democrat. I think a market economy with a strong safety net and a state that is empowering through education, skills, healthcare, early childhood development leads to the best outcomes for the economy overall and for working people.”

His politics reflect the struggle of labour against capital, and there is little acknowledgement of the role of private enterprise in the economy. “I am interested in how we can build an economy that is fair and delivers for working people that doesn’t just put the burden of change on working people and make them pay the price when sacrifices have to be made.” He adds that there was “no more significant achievement” of Labor than getting through the worst inflation outbreak in 30 years while keeping unemployment low and nominal wages growing.

Erickson, then a first-year politics student who was running for education officer, was at the heart of the fight. When the ALP Club was disaffiliated from MUSU on a technicality, he struck a deal with the campus Pride Club to run under its banner. He then teamed up with the university’s largest club, More Beer, and the international student association to help build a coalition that stood a chance of winning. “Even as a 19-year-old, Paul was very strategic,” says Tim O’Halloran, who was involved in the ALP Club at the time and is also featured in the doco.

He was working as a policy officer for the ACTU when, in 2014, a few months after his first beer with Albanese, he was appointed as Labor’s assistant national secretary. Ayres and Labor Left faction powerbroker Mark Butler were picked to manage the recruitment process. “There was just a moment when Anthony [Albanese], Butler and I met to talk about it,” says Ayres, then the state secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union.

“It was suddenly very obvious that he had something pretty special.” Erickson describes Labor’s national secretariat as “an island of integrity in a sea of shit”, channelling former national secretary Geoff Walsh. “You’re there as a custodian of the party’s interest, not there to advocate for, represent or negotiate on behalf of a factional interest.”

One Labor frontbencher says part of the reason Erickson avoided any post-election repercussions was because the 2019 campaign was the antithesis of his style; it was undisciplined, disjointed and chaotic. Erickson says as much: “I think the lesson from 2019 was that a weak strategy will be defeated by a strong strategy. And we had a weak strategy.” But 2019 was a formative experience, and it added to his increasingly confident views about how election-winning campaigns should be run. “You learn more from defeats than you do from wins.”

Not long after the 2025 federal election, Erickson travelled to London for a well-earned break with partner Dimity and their new baby, who was born two weeks before polling day. After a high-tempo year, the sojourn was a chance to recuperate and recover. But even on the far side of the world, Erickson could not escape the pull of politics.

Albanese had been invited to address the Global Progress Action Summit in London, a gathering of the world’s centre-left parties, and also to speak at the United Kingdom Labour conference in Liverpool. As the ALP’s top official, Erickson was the point man between Albanese and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. And so it was that the first week of his holiday away from Australian politics became almost entirely about Australian politics, and specifically how Labor won when so many incumbent governments around the world were being turfed out.

The Australian PM received a rousing welcome and was labelled by one pundit as a hero of progressive movements around the world. Erickson spoke on two panels the day before. Australian politics isn’t necessarily top of mind for people from North America and the UK, he says, but people were very keen to hear about his experience.

Erickson has won Albanese two elections and is now trying for a third. But less than a year into his second term, the prime minister has lost standing with questions over his judgment. The travel expense scandal engulfed his government for nearly two weeks and his fumbled handling of the terror attack on Bondi Beach has reduced his stature.

After weeks of resisting demands to establish a royal commission into antisemitism following the massacre, and having never adequately articulated the reasons why he was opposed, Albanese finally caved in the first week of January. Erickson declines to say if he advised Albanese during the two crises. “My conversations with the PM will always remain private,” he says, adding that people will have to take that as “neither confirming nor denying” any role.

If Erickson is concerned about the PM’s summer, he does not show it. When asked about the first national poll of the year, which showed Labor losing 2.5 percentage points to the Coalition, albeit still leading on a 52 per cent to 48 per cent two-party basis, he deploys the same calm confidence Albanese displayed a year earlier when he addressed the ACTU.

“We really shouldn’t place too much weight on that sort of horse race polling when you’re two-and-a-half years out from the next election,” he says. The other factor weighing into his confidence is the state of the Coalition. Addressing the National Press Club after last year’s win, Erickson said that to have any chance at the next national poll, the Coalition would need to focus more on average voters and less on their own echo chamber. “If anything, I think since the election they’ve gotten worse,” he says.

In a bid to start the new year on his own terms, Albanese recalled parliament in mid-January for a special two-day sitting to rush through new laws that crack down on racist hate speech, introduce jail time for being a member of a banned hate group and establish a new national gun buyback scheme. The decision to merge hate laws and the gun buyback scheme in the same bill has been criticised by the Coalition and labelled “petty, puerile, university politics” by Nationals leader David Littleproud. But it had the effect of causing ructions within the Coalition and allowed Albanese to regain political momentum – at least at time of going to print.

Erickson says the government has a big year planned but is careful not to go beyond his remit. “You will see some pretty substantial contributions over the coming months from the PM and from the treasurer, and the lead-up to the budget that will set that out,” he says, adding that within the government there is a strong sense that this year represents a key opportunity to undertake serious reform. “And I want to play a role in supporting them to deliver that.”

The Liberal Party thinks that changing their leader is going to fix the party’s problems, but who is going to lead them? The truth is that the Liberals aren’t interested in Australia’s future. They don’t want to fight for our culture or to help us keep our houses when interest rates are destroying our standard of living. In my opinion, the Liberals have revealed themselves as a bunch of silvertails who are out of touch.

Anthony Albanese is having a field day. The worst Prime Minister in Australian history is getting away with incompetence because his complete rock-show of a circus has been overtaken by the Liberals’ own clown show. It’s been happening for years, and the faceless machine-men and their turkeys are all coming home to roost. Even the ABC’s former chief leftologist has gleefully come out of retirement to tell us that, historically, One Nation’s surge hurts the Coalition most.

The problem with this idea is its premise. Once the Coalition finds its feet, it can turn back the tide … but that is nonsense.

Sussan Ley might as well be Albanese’s deputy. Andrew Hastie said what conservatives wanted to hear, then backed the government and then roused on his no-longer adoring followers after doing the opposite of what he said he’d do. Jacinta Nampijinpa Price explained that she missed the vote due to a technical glitch in the Senate’s division system. Angus Taylor was on holiday. Tim Wilson might not even last the next election. Josh Frydenberg came back strong but then made it all about himself. And there is no guarantee he can be re-elected unless he moves to a safer seat.

The only Liberal worth saving is Alex Antic, but he is in the Senate and the South Australian Liberals would prefer to have their own person rather than win an election. I really hope Antic moves to One Nation.

The only way the Liberals can save themselves, including those like Hastie, Price, and Taylor is to admit that they have lost their way and apologise on their knees for being so weak.

The trouble with politicians is that they forget they are dealing with Australians. You can’t be on holiday while the country burns and later claim that you have the goods to lead Australians. You can’t say you will do something then do the opposite and then get cranky at your followers. You can’t say your dog ate your homework and that’s why you didn’t vote against idiotic laws crafted by a reckless Labor government.

You have to fight the good fight. And keep battling. That’s why One Nation is building momentum. It’s not dissatisfaction with the Liberals or a protest vote. It’s because One Nation is as Australian as Australia.

At the Battle of Elands River during the Second Boer War, when asked to surrender, Colonel Charles Hore, commander of the garrison which included Australian bushmen, told Boer General de la Rey:

‘Even if I wished to surrender to you – and I don’t – I am commanding Australians who would cut my throat if I accepted your terms.’

Similarly, Field Marshall Erwin Rommel said of the Australians:

‘If I had to take hell, I would use the Australians to take it…’

Rommel saw the Australians as elite, aggressive, and capable of overcoming nearly impossible odds, such as taking a heavily fortified position. Or defeating a Labor government when the Liberals have lost the plot. For Australians, nothing is impossible.

Heads-up Ley, Hastie, Price, Taylor, Wilson, and any other silvertail who thinks Australians will be compliant and go along willingly. You are dealing with the sons and daughters of Anzacs. You have to earn our respect. And you better bloody fight.

Others will no doubt argue that Australia has changed, our demographics have changed, and so on. But the beating heart of Australia was forged in South Africa, at Gallipoli, at Villers-Bretonneux, at El Alamein, and on the Kokoda Track.

What we are witnessing is a revival of an Australia that is good and strong and tough and beautiful. It is not a place where the wharfies can go on strike and put the lives of my grandfathers at risk and get away with it. Although they have surely given it a good nudge under Labor and the Woke Liberals. All of this must change.

If the silvertail Liberals think a change in leadership will be enough to save themselves and keep going as per usual, they have another thing coming.

What has just happened in Canberra is a really big deal, and you will only learn the truth about the so-called anti-hate group laws from the IPA.

This email will let you know what the IPA has been doing, provide context for the laws, outline why claims about ‘safeguards’ for freedoms are misplaced, and provide you with analysis of everything that is wrong with the laws.

You will see at the end (which I hope you will read until!) that there are lots of reasons to be optimistic, and it is important you understand that the massive public pushback against these laws is a sign that we are winning on freedom of speech.

First, the IPA is the only organisation in Australia that has been all over these terrible laws from day one. You can read the submission we put in on the original legislation here. Make no mistake, the IPA was the driving force behind stopping these laws from being even worse than they now are. The original laws, for example, would have seen Australians going to jail, as we have seen in the UK, for social media posts about migration which were claimed to vilify someone on the basis of their race. Thank you for your support which has allowed us to do this work.

I was in Canberra from Sunday this week with my colleagues Morgan Begg and Margaret Chambers, where we briefed dozens of MPs on these terrible laws.

The legislation which passed on Tuesday night is an abomination. The passage of the so-called anti-hate group laws is an act of bipartisan cowardice, and a failure of our political leaders which has left Australia less free, less safe, and less unified.

While the primary blame is on the Albanese Government for proposing these tendentious laws, we remain deeply disappointed that the Liberal Party supported the legislation and ensured its passage through parliament.

While it should be noted that a majority of Liberal senators at least abstained from voting for the legislation, thanks in part to our efforts, it is unsettling that more didn’t vote no. In fact, only Alex Antic took the principled stand among Liberals to vote against the legislation and should be applauded for this. As should One Nation, the Greens, Senator Canavan, Senator Pocock, Senator McKenzie, Senator Cadell, and Senator McDonald, and all of those who voted against the laws. Once again, we have seen the ‘uniparty’ in action with Liberal and Labor working together to suppress the freedoms of mainstream Australians under the guise of national security. We have seen this before, as with the COVID-era laws where Liberal and Labor worked hand-in-glove, or the misinformation laws which were originally a brainchild of the Morrison government.

To understand the context for these laws, it is important to understand that Labor could not care less about freedom of speech. Labor is the party of centralised control, socialist values, and nasty sectarian politics. These laws in draft form have existed for a long time, and Labor were looking for an excuse to pass them, which they found with the Bondi Massacre. The laws were pulled from the bottom shelf of a Minister or bureaucrat’s office, dusted off, with some vague and meaningless references made to antisemitism, and the Liberals gave it their blessing.

The line of argument from some MPs is that there are sufficient safeguards in place to make sure the scope of these laws is limited and cannot be abused. This is not true.

If you read nothing else, then you need to know this: if the government wants to ban a group, then that group will be banned. The legislation is being marketed as targeting Hizb ut-Tahrir and neo-Nazi groups, but the powers are much wider. Conceivably the ambit could include groups such as the IPA, Advance Australia, and Jewish organisations.

Let me talk you through this. The process for a group being banned is the following:

1. The Minister for Home Affairs (currently Tony Burke) can declare a group a hate group if the Minister believes the group is engaged in committing or advocated committing ‘hate crimes’ (I will come back to how hate crime is defined).

There are no effective limits to this power: the Minister only has to believe the group is committing a hate crime. The hate crimes could have been alleged to have occurred before these laws passed, no conviction of a crime is required, and the Minister is not required to observe any requirements of procedural fairness in deciding whether or not he or she is satisfied a group can be declared a hate group.

2. In order to exercise this power the Minister must receive advice from the Director-General of Security of ASIO.

The Director-General of Security of ASIO is a political appointee and will inevitably be subject to political pressure to align with the government’s wishes. We should think about not who is in that chair right now, but who will be there in the future.

3. The Leader of the Opposition must be briefed before a declaration takes effect.

Only a briefing needs to be provided. The Leader of the Opposition cannot stop the listing of a group. This amounts to nothing more than a notice to the Opposition of what the government will do.

4. The Attorney-General must be consulted.

The Attorney-General is a member of the government and will follow the government’s line. (And remember, the current Attorney-General, Michelle Rowland, was one of the chief advocates of misinformation and disinformation laws.)

5. A review of the listing is to be undertaken by the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security.

A review cannot stop the listing, so this has no practical effect.

6. The listing of a hate group is disallowable by Parliament.

Under the laws, a single house of Parliament can disallow a Minister’s declaration if the house does so within the disallowance period, which is usually within 15 days of the Minster’s’ declaration being tabled in the house. The bill has a provision to extend the disallowance period by up to 8 days under certain circumstances.

So this means that for a limited time, either the lower house or the Senate can, in effect, stop the Minister from listing a group. Obviously, the lower house will not do this because the government has the numbers in that house. So the only thing stopping the unfettered use of this power is the Senate. That’s it. That’s the only real “safeguard.” This is the same Senate, by the way, that just voted for these laws.

I also wanted to outline some of the fundamental failures of the legislation, and outline the kind of scenarios in which the current or future governments could abuse the unprecedented powers that have been granted.

Contrary to proponents’ claims, extremist organisations such as Hizb ut-Tahrir has not been banned.

The laws passed, yet Hizb ut-Tahrir is still in existence. There are no groups listed in the legislation. The laws create the ability for the government to do so, but whether it actually does so remains to be seen. When you hear MPs telling you they have voted to ban extremist groups, they are not being honest.

In fact, Hizb ut-Tahrir, far from having been banned, is now more active than ever in announcing it will be launching a legal challenge to the laws. In other words, extremist groups have been emboldened by these laws, and will use them to fundraise and recruit. This contrasts with the UK where it was simply declared a prohibited terrorist organisation, using existing powers.

There is no limit to the types of groups which can be banned.

Apologists of the laws point to Section 114A.5 of the legislation which says that the Director-General of Security of ASIO, in providing advice, must be satisfied the activities of the group in question would or are likely to increase the risk of politically motivated violence or the promotion of communal violence.

However, there are two fundamental problems with this view. Firstly, the section only says the Director-General needs to be “satisfied”, which is vague and subjective. The Director-General could be “satisfied” simply because he or she doesn’t like a certain group in our society.

Secondly, the group in question itself does not have to be advocating for violence, only that the existence of a group increases the risk of politically motivated violence. This is a very important distinction. It means that, say, an anti-immigration group could be banned because the existence of that group may prompt violent protests by others. It also means that a Zionist group could be disbanded because its activities could provoke a politically violent response by an Islamist group. Experience demonstrates how these laws would license victim blaming and be used by governments to target political enemies.

The laws will encourage extremist groups to form as political parties.

As I wrote in my article for the Daily Telegraph and in a briefing note to MPs, the laws have created a powerful incentive for Hizb ut-Tahrir and like-minded organisations at risk of being disbanded to re-constitute themselves as a political party in order to circumvent the laws.

There is a strong body of argument that political parties cannot be outlawed by declaration of the executive government, as for example Sir Robert Menzies attempted to do regarding the Communist Party of Australia. Since then, there has also been the discovery by the High Court in 1992 of the implied right to political communication, which further adds weight to the argument that political parties cannot be outlawed.

The laws will have the effect of turning Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act, which was used to shut down conservative commentators Andrew Bolt and Bill Leak, into criminal penalties.

The hate crime provisions in the legislation (at Schedule 1, Part 4, Section 114A.3 (2)) provide numerous definitions, including the following: A hate crime is conduct “that would, in all the circumstances, cause a reasonable person who is the target, or a member of the target group, to be intimidated, to fear harassment or violence, or to fear for their safety.” An organisation that is believed to engage in such vague conduct could potentially be declared a prohibited hate organisation by the Minister.

Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act (1975) makes it unlawful to do an act that could offend, insult, humiliate, or intimidate someone because of their race, colour, or national or ethnic origin. However, as bad as these provisions are, breaches carry civil rather than criminal penalties, meaning guilty parties cannot be sentenced to imprisonment. Conversely, the current legislation carries imprisonment of up to 15 years for breaching certain provisions.

The threshold for a hate crime is so low that it would have captured the No campaign against the Voice to Parliament.

One definition of a hate crime used in the legislation (at Schedule 1, Part 4, Section 114A.3(5)) is “conduct, or threat of conduct, (whether engaged in or threatened before or after this section commences) that involves, or would involve creating a serious risk to the health or safety of a section of the public,” and “that a person engaged in or threatened to engage in because of the person’s belief that: the targeted person or persons are distinguished by race or national or ethnic origin; or the targeted property is associated with a person or persons distinguished by race or national or ethnic origin.”

These provisions also need to be read in the context of the objects of the section which is to “protect the Australian community or part of the Australian community against social, economic, psychological and physical harm.” These are absurdly subjective and vague and could be weaponised against any group. For example, take the No campaign against the Voice to Parliament for example. It is obvious that a claim could be made that the actions of that campaign could have caused psychological harm to sections of the community, and that a member of the ‘target’ group would have been intimidated by the actions of the No campaign. All that would be needed would be for the Director-General of Security to merely be satisfied that there was a risk of political violence resulting from the No campaign, which could happen through violent actions of their opponents, and the No campaign could have been banned.

The process was a disgrace and an insult to every Australian.

These laws should have been opposed on the process alone. There was literally a two-day consultation process and laws that will have long-term and far-reaching consequences. Given the short time, it was almost impossible for MPs, the media, and civil society to understand the full implications of the laws. To call this disrespectful to the democratic process would not come even close to describing what has happened. It is little wonder that trust and confidence in politicians is at a record low.

To end with, and despite all of the very grave challenges we face, support for freedom of speech in the community has never been higher. Members of Parliament we talked with in Canberra were surprised by the public pushback against these laws. But they shouldn’t have been. Back when the IPA was leading the debate against Section 18C (which we still do), free speech was seen by most as something that doesn’t really affect their lives, but was more a concern of the journalist class. But everyone has now seen what has been happening in the UK, most Australians have self-censored, and have experienced censorship at the workplace and elsewhere.

The community is deeply cynical about so-called hate-speech laws, and these laws are deeply unpopular, as many MPs are now starting to learn as they defend their positions on social media.

What is also clear is that free speech and the culture wars are now back on the agenda, which is where we want them to be. And we now have more fellow travellers: we have two political parties on our side with the Nationals and One Nation, and, at times the Greens and independents such as David Pocock. It is only ten years ago that the IPA was basically a solo traveller.

Finally, it is clear that principled leadership will win out eventually, as it has before. Mainstream Australians have had principled victories in defeating the Voice to Parliament, on misinformation, and on the first incarnation of this bill.

As I close, today has been designated as an official day of mourning for the tragic loss of life at Bondi. Let us remember those who were murdered in cold-blood, and reflect on what kind of country we want to be.

The IPA is the only organisation in Australia doing the hard intellectual yards to understand these laws and communicate this to the public and policymakers.

This week, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK government is considering an Australian-style ban on social media for under-16s. This is wrong for two reasons:

First, it lets social media companies off the hook by shifting responsibility from the platforms to the users, and second, it prevents Harper Beckham (14 years old) from releasing footage of her mum (Victoria Beckham) dancing at Brooklyn and Nicola’s wedding.

Australia’s blanket ban has been praised by bipartisan lawmakers around the world who have lauded this as a world-first step towards greater child safety online. But in essence, the policy is ineffective, difficult to enforce and distracts from the real problem: social media platforms are designed to be heavily addictive, poorly moderated and largely unaccountable.

While the UK’s proposal is well intentioned, it risks repeating the same fundamental mistakes Australia has already made. Australia’s ban, which came into effect on December 10, restricts users under 16 from holding accounts on major platforms including TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, Reddit, Instagram, Facebook, Twitch, Threads and X.

On paper, the obligation sits with the platforms, which face fines for non-compliance. However, actual enforcement and fining has been patchy at best.

Anyone who has spent time around teenagers knows they are astonishingly capable of breaking the rules. Long before any ban existed, my little sister, barred from Instagram by our parents, simply created an account for her cavoodle. Her dog now has more followers than I do, and acts as her pathway onto the dangerously addictive world of Instagram.

Today’s workarounds are more sophisticated but no less predictable: teenagers are switching to lesser-known platforms like Lemon8, Yope and Coverstar; using VPNs to mask their location; or even sporting $20 Halloween masks to pull one over face-recognition software. The Australian government’s policy is the digital equivalent of a curfew pushing kids out of one park and into another. The behaviour doesn’t disappear; it just relocates.

The deeper flaw is philosophical. The ban assumes that on the day a child turns 16, they are suddenly ready to navigate social media safely. That logic is as arbitrary as deciding babies are magically prepared for solid food on a single date in the calendar. As I’ve recently learned from the excessive salivation of my four-month-old, that readiness doesn’t arrive overnight – it’s learned.

Contrast this with alcohol regulation. The legal drinking age in Australia is 18, but it is paired with years of education through schools, families and communities about risk, moderation and harm. Sure, that education didn’t stop me from downing five guava vodka cruisers at 17, but it did give me the tools to understand why that wasn’t a great idea. The government’s current social media policy offers no equivalent preparation.

By focusing narrowly on under-16s, the ban also ignores the fact that online harm does not just start or end at adolescence. Scams, misinformation, addictive design and harmful content affect older users just as much – arguably more so in some cases. You don’t have to look far to find over-50s disappearing down YouTube gut-microbiome rabbit holes with alarming conviction.

More importantly, banning access does nothing to address the root causes of harm: addictive algorithms, infinite scroll and weak moderation systems. Even the inventor of the infinite scroll has publicly said he regrets creating it. These features are not accidents; they are deliberate design choices optimised for maximum engagement at the expense of wellbeing.

The unintended consequence of a ban is that companies spend their resources on keeping teenagers out rather than cleaning up their platforms. Harmful content, cyberbullying and misinformation become secondary concerns to age-gating and compliance theatre. It’s a classic whack-a-mole approach: block one platform, watch another pop up.

The UK actually already has a better framework in place. The Online Safety Act (2023) was designed to place duties on social media companies and search engines to remove illegal content, protect children from harm and implement meaningful age verification.

Rather than importing Australia’s blunt instrument, the UK government should focus on strengthening and enforcing this legislation, ironing out its kinks and closing its loopholes.

Australia should similarly focus on building upon the foundations of its own Online Safety Act (2021) and introduce a duty of care on online service providers to take reasonable steps to address and prevent foreseeable online harms. A duty-of-care framework, as recommended by an independent Statutory Review, would help shift responsibility from individuals to the digital platforms.

Education must also be part of the solution. Media literacy – understanding how algorithms work, recognising manipulation techniques, and learning how to navigate online spaces safely – should be treated as a core life skill. Banks and private companies have invested heavily in public education around scams and fraud; the government should be doing the same for digital literacy across all ages.

A ban on under-16s may be politically attractive, but it gives tech companies cover. It allows them to point to age restrictions rather than interrogate their own products. If the UK is serious about protecting young people online, it should resist the temptation of an easy headline and instead do the harder work of holding platforms to account.

After all, children will always find a way into the park at night. The question is whether the park itself is safe.

Jerusalem/London/Washington | The “Board of Peace” set up by Donald Trump to oversee Gaza will have a broader mandate that could allow it to rival the UN and mediate in other global conflicts, according to the charter sent to prospective members.

“Durable peace requires pragmatic judgment, common-sense solutions, and the courage to depart from approaches and institutions that have too often failed.”

The distribution of the charter came after US officials had floated the idea of allowing the board to mediate in other hotspots such as Ukraine and Venezuela, and appears to give credence to diplomats’ fears that the Trump administration is seeking ways to sideline the UN.

The top level of the board will consist “exclusively” of heads of state under Trump’s leadership, according to a White House official.

On Saturday, a Saudi official said, “The kingdom has received the invitation to join the Board of Peace from the US administration, and it is being reviewed as per our internal processes. We are supportive of President Trump’s efforts to resolve the conflict and bring lasting peace to Gaza and the region.”

The charter, details of which were first reported by Israeli newspaper Haaretz, gives wide-ranging powers to Trump as chair of the board, allowing him to appoint as well as remove member states – a decision that could only be overturned by a two-thirds majority of members.

It appears to give him a veto on the board’s decisions, which it says will be “made by a majority of the member states present and voting, subject to the approval of the chairman, who may also cast a vote in his capacity as chairman in the event of a tie”.

It also provides him with the “exclusive authority to create, modify, or dissolve subsidiary entities as necessary or appropriate to fulfil the Board of Peace’s mission”, such as the executive committee that will deal with Gaza, or other similar boards created for other conflicts.

“It’s just very confused as an idea,” said a senior European official. “What does ‘membership’ mean? Is it an alliance or a body for mediation between adversaries?”

A US official said on Friday (Saturday AEDT) that planning for the board was focused on the Israel-Gaza conflict and had not yet expanded beyond it.

But later, the official said that the Board of Peace had been structured with a top-tier board composed of heads of state, and below that a founding executive board, which itself sits above a Gaza executive board, because “it’s possible that the Board of Peace in the future could end up … encompassing more than Gaza”.

The other peace deals that Trump “has delivered on could be encompassed” in the Board of Peace’s mandate through the creation of further executive boards, the official said.

The board was formally authorised to oversee Gaza’s postwar transition by a UN Security Council resolution in November. But it is unclear what legal mandate the board would function under beyond the Middle East.

Trump has long been hostile to the UN, and toyed with pulling the US out of the organisation entirely.

Earlier this month he withdrew the US from 31 UN entities, which he said operated “contrary to US national interests, security, economic prosperity, or sovereignty”.

Most commentators told us that if Donald Trump was re-elected as the US President he would bring in a new era of American isolationism. The reality has been quite the reverse.

Trump is the first Western leader in the past two decades who has stood up, with decisiveness and energy, against all those who wish to subvert the free world.

He has ended two decades of weak, vacillating and uncertain policymaking, not just by American presidents but by European leaders as well.

China has been able to seize contested reefs from its neighbours and militarise them, despite promises to president Barack Obama not to do so. Nothing was done about it.

Russia invaded Crimea, which was part of Ukraine, in 2014; again, nothing effective was done about it. Iran not only suppressed its own people and destroyed their living standards but also gave military and financial support to terrorist groups bent on the destruction of democratic Israel, undermining governance in Lebanon and endeavouring to destroy the emerging democracy of Iraq.

America and its allies made a bit of an effort but in the end got into a fruitless negotiation to suspend Iran’s nuclear program.

Then there was the Western debacle in Syria. President Bashar al-Assad, with the help of the Russians, managed to stave off the insurgency against his brutal and dictatorial regime. American and Western efforts to stop it were totally ineffectual. The final humiliation came in 2021, when the Americans led their allies out of Afghanistan and allowed the deeply undemocratic, authoritarian and medieval Taliban to retake control of that country.

Nobody noticed Latin America but the far-left government of president Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela allowed Russia, Iran and China as well as the communist dictatorship of Cuba to use his country to their hearts’ content.

Maduro reduced Venezuela’s GDP by 70-80 per cent across the past 10 years and caused 20 per cent of the national population to flee the country. Venezuela made what little money it ever made by trafficking narcotics from Latin America into the US. America and the West did nothing about it. It’s a pathetic story of total failure of Western diplomacy across the past 20 years.

And now we have Trump. He has decided that enough is enough. America has to use its hard and soft power to push back against its adversaries. And he has had quite a measure of success in just one year. He ended the war in Gaza. He decimated Iran’s nuclear program. He worked with the Israelis to destroy Hezbollah’s and Hamas’s capacity to destroy the state of Israel. They drove the ruthless dictator Assad out of Syria and destroyed Russian influence in the Middle East.

Sure, Trump hasn’t ended the Ukraine war yet, but neither has anyone else. The Europeans complain that he hasn’t finished the job. But what have they done? What did they ever do to stop the invasion by the Russians in the first place? Absolutely nothing.

Trump’s unpredictability, his courage and his determination to deal with America’s adversaries who are the enemies of the free world guarantee that authoritarian governments such as China’s will hesitate before engaging in military adventurism. You can be sure that Xi Jinping will not invade Taiwan for as long as Trump remains in office.

Then there’s Latin America, right on the doorstep of the US. We’ll see how Trump goes with his arrest of Maduro and his pressuring of the remnants of the socialist regime in Caracas. But so far he has shown himself to be decisive and effective.

It’s extraordinary how the political left in Europe, and for that matter within the US, has objected to almost everything Trump has done. But what has its strategy been?

Since the end of the Cold War, the left has adopted the concept of moral equivalence. Free liberal democratic societies are no better than authoritarian regimes. The left has just been happy to leave them playing their merry games. The weakness of the West has been chronic. Its pusillanimity has been exploited mercilessly by China, Russia, Iran and, for that matter, North Korea.

Certainly, some of Trump’s public declarations seem bizarre. One of the more bizarre is his campaign to seize Greenland for the US. I must be one of a small handful of Australians who has ever visited Greenland. I spent a couple of days in Nuuk, its capital, in August 2023. Greenland is about the size of Western Australia. It’s largely covered with an ice shelf and has a total population of a mere 50,000 people. Nuuk has a population of only 20,000.

I visited Nuuk in the height of summer and even then it reached a pretty cold maximum temperature of 8C. That’s more or less as warm as it gets in Greenland. Most of the year it’s covered with snow and ice. It’s a desolate place although it has great beauty.

So why would Trump be interested in Greenland? Well, the answer is it’s strategically important, particularly in the highly contested Arctic region.

The US already has a major base, formerly called Thule Air Base, now known as Pituffik Space Base, in the northwest of Greenland. It is the largest US military base in area outside of the US itself. Pituffik is a strategic hub for the US military. It has installations for tracking ballistic missiles that could come from Russia, targeting US cities.

Pituffik is also a fundamental part of American and NATO satellite communications. Indeed, it is NATO’s second most important space communications base.

Greenland, in case you didn’t know, is former Danish colony, now a self-governing territory within Denmark.

Denmark is a member of the EU, which has shown itself to be pathetically weak in the face of Russian aggression. Frankly, it would be better if Greenland remained part of Denmark. But you can understand why a campaigner for the free world such as Trump would think it would be in safer hands if it were instead taken over by the Americans.

Say what you like about Trump, but you have to give it to him. He has the courage and the strength to campaign for the free world in a way we haven’t seen by any Western leader for the past two decades. He deserves credit for that.

Serious rifts between NSW and Australian Federal Police over joint operations run in the months before the Bondi massacre led to a request to change intelligence ­procedures and protocols of the nation’s high-powered Joint Counter Terrorism Team and ­ongoing “bad blood” between ­security agencies.

As the country grapples with the worst terror attack in its history and how best to respond, questions over prevailing ill-will across state and federal police branches after the Dural caravan scare in January last year have been raised by senior intelligence sources.

NSW police supported an ­independent inquiry and sought changes to the counter-terrorism protocols in the wake of the Dural incident to “improve” interagency co-operation, including with ASIO, after disputes over juris­diction and intelligence-handling at the highest levels.

The Australian can reveal there was no subsequent change to the counter-­terrorism protocols and no independent inquiry was held ­despite the interagency conflicts.

Anthony Albanese continues to reject growing calls for a commonwealth royal commission to investigate wider implications of the Bondi massacre and events leading up to the tragedy, arguing instead that an internal security review into the deaths of 15 innocent people at Bondi Beach, most of them Jewish, would be enough. The Prime Minister has stood firm on his view that the scope of the ­inquiry – to be headed by former ASIO boss Dennis Richardson – must focus on the Bondi shootings, arguing a wider review would take too long and be divisive.

Despite this, the government is facing mounting pressure to call a royal commission from families of the Bondi victims and influential Australians across society, including former AFP commissioner Mick Keelty and former spy chief Nick Warner.

Central to the argument for a royal commission is that the Richardson review’s terms of reference do not include an investigation into anti-Semitism nor broader issues that could have contributed to the massacre. Another omission was a commitment to investigate the rifts between law-enforcement and intelligence agencies before the December 14 attack.

The 2025 differences over ­approach, protocols, secrecy and jurisdiction arose from investigations into the discovery of the explosives-laden caravan in Dural in western Sydney on January 19, which had a series of notes listing Jewish sites and buildings, including the Great Synagogue.

Senior intelligence sources said it was a serious concern that there was still “bad blood” and “ill will” between agencies because of the handling of the incident in Dural.

Despite a public call for an independent inquiry into interagency co-operation over the caravan bomb “hoax” from the then-NSW Police commissioner, Karen Webb, and for changes to “improve” interagency co-operation, no inquiry was launched and no changes were made.

The discovery of the bomb and leaking of its existence to the media created a highly politicised atmosphere as Mr Albanese prepared for an election, in which national security was a key issue. NSW Premier Chris Minns used the “potential mass-casualty attack” as grounds to extend hate speech laws. After the caravan bomb was dismissed as a hoax and a “con job” orchestrated from overseas by an organised crime figure to influence the handling of charges against him, a senior NSW police officer appealed to the AFP to change the procedures of the JCTT.

The caravan had been left “precariously” beside the road in Dural in December 2024 and the explosives were only discovered in January when a resident took the caravan on to their property and discovered the contents inside.

The existence of the caravan was kept secret as the AFP, NSW police and ASIO investigated and a JCTT was established. From the beginning, there were different interpretations of the threat and disputes over secrecy provisions.

NSW Deputy Police Commissioner and senior investigator Dave Hudson believed from “day one” the explosives-laden caravan was not a terrorist plot but an attempt to “manipulate” the justice system. The AFP maintained a top priority for the investigation as a terrorist threat and ordered state police officers to sign non­disclosure agreements and not pass information up the chain of command.

NSW Police sent a senior officer to Canberra to negotiate changes to how the JCTT would operate, while AFP commanders maintained they could not disclose sources of the information because of their operational rules.

Mr Albanese and Mr Minns ­became embroiled in a political ­debate over when they knew about the caravan and what was done about it as the Prime Minister said the AFP had to be allowed to do its job and Mr Minns warned publicly about a potential “mass-casualty event”.

The AFP did not drop the terror priority and “discredit” its source until the first week in March when NSW Police were informed of the change.

On March 10, then-deputy AFP commissioner in charge of national security, Krissy Barrett, said that “within hours” of the caravan being found any perceived threat was “mitigated”.

“Almost immediately, experienced investigators within the JCTT believed that the caravan was part of a fabricated terrorism plot – essentially a criminal con job,” she said. “Today, I can reveal that the caravan was never going to cause a mass-casualty event but instead was concocted by criminals who wanted to cause fear for personal benefit.”

The now-AFP Commissioner said federal police continued to get “tip offs” and out of “an abundance of caution” kept the investigation “at the highest level”. “We are now confident that all these tip-offs were fabricated, and the caravan plot was an elaborate scheme contrived by organised criminals, domestically and from offshore,” she said in March.

Deputy Commissioner Hudson told the NSW parliamentary inquiry he had downplayed the threat of terrorism at an earlier press conference to reassure the Jewish community in Sydney that there was no ongoing threat.

“We weren’t seeing anything that would pose a significant threat to the community, apart from the reporting that we were receiving through the AFP,” he said.

THE Pol­ish pres­id­en­tial elec­tion is usu­ally a straight fight between a Cath­olic con­ser­vat­ive and lib­eral cent­rist. But in May, the cosy polit­ical duo­poly suffered a seis­mic shake-up.

In the first round of vot­ing, a sharp-suited, baby-faced man of 38 pro­pelled his Con­fed­er­a­tion alli­ance into third place – and anoin­ted him­self the king maker. Sla­womir Mentzen is little known out­side Poland. But he belongs to the dynamic new breed of digital-savvy pop­u­lists of both Left and Right who are upend­ing con­ven­tional polit­ics across the West­ern world.

Their ranks include Jordan Bar­della in France, Zohran Mam­dani in the US, Alvise Pérez in Spain, Sohei Kam­iya in Japan and Zack Polanski and Nigel Far­age in Bri­tain. But even by their stand­ards, Mentzen’s approach to soap­box polit­ics is cre­at­ive and unortho­dox. “Mentzen is a superb social media com­mu­nic­ator,” says Aleks Szczer­biak, a polit­ics pro­fessor at the Uni­versity of Sus­sex. “He’s head and shoulders above any­body else in using this medium.”

Mentzen’s mes­sage is unusual among many pop­u­lists. He cam­paigns against the woke agenda, like any typ­ical Right-winger, but his over­rid­ing pre­oc­cu­pa­tion is Thatcher­ite: the two major parties’ unwill­ing­ness to cut taxes, rein in spend­ing and shrink the state.

The lib­eral Civic Plat­form runs the gov­ern­ment under Don­ald Tusk, the prime min­is­ter, and the con­ser­vat­ive Law and Justice party (PiS) holds the pres­id­ency. They both are com­mit­ted to gen­er­ous tax and wel­fare giveaways.

But Mentzen, who has a PhD in eco­nom­ics, is ringing the alarm bell. He says the very future of Poland’s long-run­ning eco­nomic mir­acle could be at stake. “Poland has Irish tax rates and Swedish wel­fare expendit­ure rates,” says Marek Mat­raszek, the chair­man of CEC Group, a Pol­ish polit­ical advis­ory firm. “The tick­ing time bomb is the embed­ded budget defi­cit. It is going through the roof.”

Mentzen’s Con­fed­er­a­tion is not rid­ing as high in the polls as Reform UK, National Rally in France or AfD in Ger­many. In the first round of the May pres­id­en­tial elec­tion, he took only 15pc of the national vote. But this snappy, digital-nat­ive use of X, You­Tube and Ins­tagram won him almost one third of the vote among the under-30s.

Young voters were attrac­ted to his dis­tinct­ive mash-up of anti-woke pop­u­lism with trenchant free-mar­ket eco­nom­ics. “I love the smell of Left­ist ter­ror in the morn­ing,” he pos­ted on X after the first-round res­ult. He then added a photo of him­self with a pint and cigar:

But he couldn’t sit back and relax. Both the can­did­ates for the elec­tion’s second round – Rafal Trza­skowski, the lib­eral mayor of Warsaw and Karol Nawrocki, from the arch-con­ser­vat­ive PiS – needed Mentzen to swing his voters their way. Mentzen ripped up the play­book. Eschew­ing the main­stream media and its “non­sense and lies”, he invited both to appear on his You­Tube chan­nel. They would make their case to him and his voters unfiltered. Both took the bait.

On air, he asked each of them to endorse eight key Con­fed­er­a­tion prin­ciples. These included no tax increases, no gun con­trol, no restric­tions on free­dom of expres­sion, no new treat­ies with the EU and no Nato mem­ber­ship for Ukraine.

Nawrocki signed up. Trza­skowski demurred, but said he backed four of the points. “I would rather the pres­id­ent were someone else other than these two – for example, me,” Mentzen said on X. “Vote for the one that is closer to you.”

His father was a uni­versity math­em­at­ics pro­fessor, and he evid­ently inher­ited the schol­arly gene. He has a pair of bach­elor degrees in com­puter sci­ence and the­or­et­ical phys­ics, plus a mas­ters and PhD in eco­nom­ics.

But he eschewed an aca­demic career. While still study­ing, he reportedly ran a cur­rency exchange. He then sold that and opened first a gun shop, then an account­ancy prac­tice. Tax advis­ory became his main­stay, but five years ago, he launched an eponym­ous craft brew­ery. One of its sig­na­ture beers was reputedly christened “White IPA mat­ters”. He is mar­ried to another Right-wing polit­ical act­iv­ist, and they have three chil­dren.

He has spoken pub­licly about being on the aut­ism spec­trum. Accord­ing to Pol­ish media reports, he describes this as a kind of super­power, mak­ing him “meth­od­ical, focused, and immune to polit­ical theatre”.

Mentzen became involved in pop­u­list far-Right polit­ics while still in his teens, as an aco­lyte of vet­eran ultra-con­ser­vat­ive act­iv­ist Janusz Kor­win-Mikke. In 2022, he took over his mentor’s polit­ical party. Her­al­ded on stage to the Star Wars theme, he renamed the party New Hope – a ref­er­ence to the ori­ginal 1977 film.

New Hope is one of the two lead­ing parties within the Con­fed­er­a­tion alli­ance. The other is the National Move­ment, a more tra­di­tional pop­u­list-con­ser­vat­ive party led by the equally youth­fulKrzysztof Bosak. Mentzen has spoken out against abor­tion, cli­mate policy and gay rights. But much of that anti-Left agenda is handled by the National Move­ment. Most polit­ical observ­ers ques­tion whether the more sec­u­lar and liber­tarian New Hope can com­fort­ably co-exist with the National Move­ment’s more faith-based and eco­nom­ic­ally pop­u­list creed.

The next Pol­ish par­lia­ment­ary elec­tion is still a long way off, not due until 2027. And lately Con­fed­er­a­tion has taken a step back in the polls. Earlier this year, the far-Right Mem­ber of European Par­lia­ment Grzegorz Braun aban­doned Mentzen’s alli­ance to form his own break­away party, the Con­fed­er­a­tion of the Pol­ish Crown.

Braun, 58, is a Cath­olic con­ser­vat­ive who has denied the Holo­caust and cast doubts over Ukraine’s right to exist.

He is unlikely to appeal to New Hope’s young liber­tari­ans. But he has claimed the insur­gency mantle, and the chunk of anti-estab­lish­ment voters who come with that. Since sum­mer, the polling aver­age for Braun’s party has risen from 5pc to at least 9pc. Con­fed­er­a­tion has shed two points to 13pc, and the PiS has dropped from 32pc to 28pc. Mentzen may have lost some polit­ical sup­port, but the inter­na­tional credit rat­ing agen­cies sup­port his eco­nomic thesis. Even if Mentzen’s dia­gnosis is right, it’s unclear whether more voters will agree to his cure. Szczer­biak says Mentzen’s liber­tari­an­ism con­strains his abil­ity to expand his base as Far­age has in the UK.

“Most of these insur­gent Right-wing parties – and Reform is a good example – tend not to be free-mar­ket,” he says.

Far­age has cut his cloth to that, but it’s krypton­ite to Mentzen. Even if he can’t swell the ranks, Mentzen can keep his exist­ing sup­port loyal on social media – and he knows it. “My voters don’t watch your tele­vi­sion… They use social media, ” he told rivals dur­ing the May pres­id­en­tial elec­tion.

Since then, the lib­er­als have toned down their attacks on Mentzen. “They’ve real­ised Con­fed­er­a­tion is a party that’s almost cer­tainly going to hold the bal­ance of power in the next par­lia­ment,” Szczer­biak says.

If he can keep his coali­tion united for two years, Mentzen may yet get another chance to play king maker. And the revolu­tion will be You­Tubed.

Chris Uhlmann, whose writing since he joined The Australian has greatly impressed me, kicked an own goal in his response to Laura Tingle’s appallingly ignorant claim that the Bondi slaughter had nothing to do with Islam:

What we witnessed was a religion corrupted into a nihilistic cult, where death is sanctified as an oblation to a false god. To insist this has nothing to do with Islam is cowardice. It is to evade the truth that a worldwide battle is raging for the soul of that faith, and it will not be won by denial. Many of its victims are Muslims. We should stand with those within Islam who reject this rank corruption of their beliefs and are willing to name it, confront it and defeat it.

My attempt at an online online comment in response was, predictably, rejected.:

Well, I would stand with them, Chris, if you could name a single one of them

The first point to make is that wishing death on Jews and Christians is prominent in the various renderings and translations of Koranic verses and Hadiths. For example, depending on the source, Koran 9.30 variously urges the wrath of Allah descend on Jews and Christians (“may Allah kill them”; “may God destroy them”;”may Allah ruin them”). So this is not a corruption or perversion of Islam. It is an essential part of it, especially when a firebrand imam is doing the preaching True, these tracts do stand in contrast to others that Muslim clerics routinely trot out to support the notion that Islam is ‘the religion of peace’. I’m not an Islamic scholar but even a cursory knowledge of Muhammad’s rise offers some perspective.

At the start of his messianic career, when the Angel Gabriel was dictating the precepts of a new religion, his followers were few and scorned in his native Mecca, it is hardly surprising Muhammad was preaching a self-interested tolerance. Later, when his disciples had grown and were legion, tolerance is set aside, replaced by aggression, expansion, and the prospect of booty seized from those who refuse to submit. Anyone curious about Islam, how it began, how it spread so quickly, and how it melded the tribal affiliations and clan animosities of the seventh century Arabian Peninsular into a unifying religion/social order/political system can do no better than to watch Raymond Ibrahim’s video below.

But the fact is that many Muslim clerics, such as the odious Wissam Haddad, are drawing on ‘divine revelation’, which obviously cannot be expunged or renounced by man. You may argue that the Bible also contains some violent rhetoric. But the difference is that no Christian preacher or priest these days employs such language.

However, in the Islamic world – particularly predominantly Muslim countries – a large number do. Why else is the Islamic world such a violent environment? And a disproportionate number (one would be too many) of, yes, Imams preach this hate in mosques in Australia.

Anyway, back to those Muslim heroes demanding Islam rid itself of ‘corruption’. You would imagine that this would have to come from the imams themselves. The Australian National Imams Council issued a statement, in the form of a sermon, on the Bondi massacre. It is titled Unity, Harmony, and Standing Together as One Nation and commences:

Islam is a religion founded on mercy, justice, peace and responsibility toward all people and humanity.

Allah says: “And We have not sent you ˹O Muhammad˺ except as a mercy to all of creation.” (Qur’an 21:107)

The recent acts of terror and violence in Bondi are unequivocally condemned. These criminal and evil acts have no place in our society and world, and we must stand united in rejecting and condemning them and supporting all the victims and those affected.

The pain, fear, and shock felt across Australian society and the world highlight how moments of crisis test character, faith, and moral responsibility.

Islam calls believers to respond to such moments with compassion, justice, wisdom, and moral clarity.

Fair enough. The press release continues with the predictable and formulaic statement of regret:

Sincere condolences are extended to the Australian Jewish community, the victims, their families, and all those affected. The grief, distress, and deep sense of insecurity felt within the Australian Jewish community are fully acknowledged, and our solidarity and compassion are unequivocally affirmed.

We empathise deeply, as Muslims understand the trauma of having a sacred space and time violated, as tragically experienced during the Christchurch massacre.

While these attacks targeted the Australian Jewish community, they are in reality an attack on all communities, including the Muslim community, and an assault on the safety, dignity, and harmony of our entire nation.

Ah yes, we are all victims together in this. Just as much as little Matilda. It makes me want to vomit. This was not, by any stretch of the imagination, an attack on Muslims and was in no way comparable to the Christchurch massacre. Brenton Tarrant, a genuine lone wolf, certainly targeted Muslims, but he was not motivated by Christian faith or teaching, if indeed he believes himself a Christian in any sense at all. The Bondi killers were religiously motivated. That is the difference and that is my point.

Next comes a section on the sanctity of human life (emphasis added):

Human life holds absolute sanctity in Islam, without distinction of faith, race, or background. The killing of innocent people is among the gravest crimes in Islam.

Allah (SWT) says: “Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption upon the earth, it is as if he has killed all of mankind; and whoever saves one, it is as if he has saved all of mankind.” (Qur’an 5:32)

Well here’s the full quote (follow the link above for the various translations). The one below makes the intent clear: it is a warning to Jews that they had better behave themselves

We ordain unto the children of Israel that if anyone slays a human being — unless it be [in punishment] for murder or for spreading corruption on earth — it shall be as though he had slain all mankind; whereas, if anyone saves a life, it shall be as though he had saved the lives of all mankind. And, indeed, there came unto them Our apostles with all evidence of the truth: yet, behold, notwithstanding all this, many of them go on committing all manner of excesses on earth.

Now back to the press release

Islam unequivocally condemns violence, terrorism, and the spreading of fear in all their forms.

Allah (SWT) says: “And do not cause corruption on the earth” (Qur’an 7:56)

This quote also has been truncated. The full verse ends this way: …”after its reformation.” In other words, after it has submitted to Islam.

Muslims have always been an integral part of Australian society and its social fabric, and have made, and continue to make, valuable contributions to this country while sharing responsibility for its peace, safety, and harmony.

Starting with the 1915 attack by two Muslim “holy warriors” on Broken Hill picnickers that left four dead and seven wounded, I must beg to differ about “peace, harmony and safety” — a scepticism that grows in light of Victoria Police’s list of terror incidents and arrests between 2005 and 2015.

Islam places a duty on all believers to be a source of reassurance, stability, and goodness in times of challenges.

Allah (SWT) says: “Allah commands justice, excellence, and giving to relatives, and forbids immorality, wrongdoing, and oppression.” (Qur’an 16:90)

This press release-cum-sermon is nothing more than performative boilerplate response that they could not have avoided making.

And, just before the end, we have this:

Responsibility, Vigilance, and Reporting Islamophobia
and Anti-Muslim Hate

During these challenging times, the Muslim community, particularly those who are vulnerable, particularly women and the elderly, should remain vigilant and calm, acting with wisdom during periods of heightened tension.

Misinformation and the sharing of unverified or harmful content, primarily through social media, must be avoided.

Wisdom, restraint, and responsibility in speech and conduct are essential Islamic virtues.

The Prophet said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Reporting Islamophobic incidents is essential. These include vandalism such as graffiti and arson attacks, physical and verbal assaults, online and cyber threats, hate speech, and anti-Palestinian racism.

Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate should be reported regardless of scale, whether minor or severe, so incidents are addressed appropriately. Reports can be made through ANIC’s platform and initiative, Action Against Islamophobia.

Recent developments involving the arrest of seven Melbourne men, who were later released without charge following a dramatic police operation in Liverpool, have raised serious concerns. The men have since reported racism in the conduct of the arrest.

The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) is deeply concerned about the approach taken during this operation. Footage circulating publicly appears to show the men handcuffed on the ground, with vehicles rammed, and searched extensively, before the men were released without charge.

We are particularly mindful of the heightened sensitivities following the Bondi terror attack and the importance of maintaining community harmony, calm, and public safety during this period.

These actions raise serious concerns and legitimate questions about proportionality, conduct, and potential racial profiling, and greater clarity is essential.

Put simply, please treat our brethren with kid gloves, even in the immediate aftermath of the worst anti-Semitic atrocity in Australian history.

I’m sorry, Chris Uhlmann, but I don’t detect any sign of introspection as to the role Islam, even a corrupted version of it, might have played in the Bondi massacre. Pontius Pilate could have taken a lesson from this lot. I don’t see anyone here, calling out the ‘corruption of Islam’, with whom I can stand. If you read this perhaps you could name someone ‘within Islam’. Not Ayaan Hirsi Ali or any other apostate, but an influential imam in Australia.

Most Muslims in Australia are appalled at what happened, I don’t doubt that. Just not appalled enough to take a long hard look at their religion. Just not appalled enough to wonder why virtually all the mayhem in the world across the past few decades has been at the hands of their co-religionists.

As a high-ranking law enforcement professional, with decades of frontline experience in Australia and overseas within the Australian Federal Police, I cannot write this under my real name.

Strict secrecy provisions in the AFP Act force officers into anonymity, under threat of harsh punishment. This is rooted in reputation and institutional protection, not the protection of classified information.

Government leaders now speak as though the terrorist attack at Bondi Beach came without warning, as if there were no signs, no escalating threats, no atmosphere of danger – as if it emerged from nowhere. Security and law enforcement officials repeat that they have the situation under control and are considering appropriate responses, but these assurances come far too late.

The truth is unmistakeable: the alarm bells were ringing long ago. The October 9, 2023, protest at the Sydney Opera House, the 300 per cent rise in harassment, threats and assaults against Jewish Australians; the arson and vandalism of Jewish businesses, schools and places of worship; the anti-Semitism on university campuses, the unchecked hate speech, the weekly protest marches calling for the destruction of Israel and the Jewish people, and the repeated briefings, particularly to Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, from security agencies all pointed to a growing and foreseeable threat.

Can this government credibly claim it did not see this coming? That it required the largest loss of Jewish life since October 7, 2023, to acknowledge rising anti-Semitism and the threat of radical Islamist extremism? Australians are patient, but that patience is wearing thin as law-abiding citizens face consequences while the real dangers remain unaddressed.

The situation echoes the period between 2008 and 2013, when security and law enforcement agencies briefed successive govern­ments on the people-smuggling crisis. With clear evidence and analysis, officials insisted nothing more could be done to stop the boats, even with additional resources, and that only a policy change would be effective. Boats continued to sink. More than 1000 children, women and men drowned. These deaths were preventable. A reasonable policy shift would have saved lives but inaction cost hundreds of them. Wilful blindness.

What happened at Bondi Beach should never have occurred. Yet, once again, it appears state and federal policy is shifting the burden on to law-abiding citizens rather than addressing the actions of criminals and terrorists – individuals already known to security and law enforcement agencies.

The police investigation remains in its early stages and will require months of detailed work, in Australia and overseas, to establish the full sequence of events. Only once the investigation is complete will we have the evidence necessary to identify any system or policy failures. Premature decision-making, in the absence of all relevant facts, risks undermining the integrity and effectiveness of any subsequent reforms.

An inquiry into the circumstances leading to the Bondi attack is essential. It should not be a witch-hunt; if conducted independently, it can help shape evidence-based government policy and determine whether agencies are adequately resourced, whether current information-sharing protocols are effective, where operational improvements and capabilities are needed, and determine whether immigration settings are keeping pace with evolving global threat dynamics. Key questions include:

● How individuals known for extremist views were allowed into Australia and the community

● How they obtained a firearms licence despite security concerns

● Why watch-listed individuals were permitted to purchase firearms

● How monitored individuals were still able to carry out the attack

● How the government can propose firearm reforms when the data held by police and firearms registries systems are inaccurate.

A serious question now arises as to whether state and federal governments have misled the Australian public by selectively shaping communications about anti-Semitism and radical Islam for political purposes.

According to reporting by Sky News, the AFP commissioner stated the Bondi Beach terrorist attack was “not motivated by religion”. Most Australians will find that assertion difficult to reconcile with the facts, and those with experience in security or law enforcement agencies will likely be particularly surprised given the ideology underpinning such attacks is inherently religious, albeit based on a radical and distorted interpretation.

As a nation, we require a mature and candid discussion about how to address the minority of Muslims who subscribe to radical Islamist ideology, which is in stark contrast to Australia’s own values. The AFP commissioner’s comments give rise to questions of political interference or preference, given her previous service in counter-terrorism.

At the centre of this tragedy is the rise of radical Islamist extremism and violent anti-Semitism. Individuals who entered Australia, adopted or already held extremist ideologies and were known to national security agencies were nevertheless able to obtain a firearms licence and purchase weapons while not being citizens and while being monitored. Despite these red flags, they still were able to carry out a horrific attack on innocent Jewish Australians celebrating a religious festival. That is the core issue: the failure to recognise, confront and act decisively against escalating extremist ideology and anti-Semitism.

And the proposed response? Change the gun laws. Punish responsible, law-abiding Australians. This defies logic. It is the policy equivalent of confiscating the knives from the local butcher because someone was stabbed in the next town.

There isn’t a licensed firearms holder in the country who would be comfortable knowing that individuals with extremist ideology were able to obtain a firearms licence and purchase weapons. Reviewing the regulations and protocols governing the issuing of licences is reasonable. What is not reasonable is the reaction driven by optics rather than evidence by governments to push through legislation without consultation with affected citizens or any stakeholder groups.

The number of licensed firearms in Australia is dubious. Data inconsistencies between police systems and firearms registries are common – a firearm still may appear on a licence in one system even though it has been disposed of and is no longer registered in another. A single firearm may be recorded several times because of serial numbers being treated as separate entries. To support any meaningful policy or regulatory discussion, we need accurate firearm data.

This issue is not about gun control. It is about leadership, anti-Semitism and confronting radical Islamist extremism – about successive governments and agencies avoiding hard truths, prioritising political optics over national security and failing to properly resource the systems designed to protect Australians. Any errors within these agencies should be recognised as organisational failures, not individual ones. The people working in these environments are dedicated Australians doing their best despite chronic under-resourcing, underfunding and operating in a high-threat landscape where the margin for error is almost non-existent.

The consequences of these failures will fall on law-abiding citizens who have done nothing wrong. It is not fair. It is not democratic. It is not Australian. It reflects governments scrambling for cover – because when you fail to act in the face of escalating anti-Semitism, radical Islamist extremism and hate speech, this is the outcome.

We now know the Albanese government’s wind and solar renewables power generation plan is based on incorrect data and is in trouble.

As it now stands, Australia will depend on large quantities of diesel power generation to satisfy demand during an increasingly likely power shortage crisis. The word from one or two shocked ALP officials is that they now must find a way to look again at nuclear.

The holes in the renewables plan, which emerged last year, were kept secret from Australian voters for over a year.

Had they been made public during the election campaign, the result might have been much closer and conceivably could have seen the Coalition in power.

The recent debate over a nil emissions target in 2050 was a farce because, again, the current facts were not known.

The data secret was revealed to the nation by my colleague Chris Uhlmann in the Weekend Australian. Before setting out a brief summary of the Uhlmann revelation, I want to canvass who was responsible for the data being kept secret. The knowledge of the data disaster was held in the Australian Energy Market Operator.

Did the top people at AEMO understand the significance of the data they had collected? Assuming they did, then did AEMO tell Energy Minister Chris Bowen the crisis the data showed? Or did they merely tell him what he wanted to hear?

If Bowen was told and did understand what had gone wrong, did he tell the Prime Minister?

I do not know the answers to these questions, but it will be the job of the parliament next year to find out. There will be a lot of blame shifting. In today’s commentary, after summarising Uhlmann revelations and their source, I will then go through some of the alternatives we now face as a nation. Many will be shocked.

In the past, myself and other commentators have highlighted the fact that our solar and wind networks are going to cost substantially more than when they were originally planned and the extra cost is going to be paid via higher power prices which are already boosting inflation.

In the original renewables plan, sensibly, AEMO realised that there might be periods when the wind did not blow and the sun was not shining – particularly in winter on the east coast plus South Australia. WA was separate but also impacted.

AEMO did its job and looked at past data and established a worst-case scenario when the sun and wind were not producing sufficient energy.

They then looked at the capacity for gas, hydro, batteries and other backup facilities to cover the periods’ shortfall.

Gas fired power stations are only capable of operating at full capacity for a limited number of hours per day. AEMO concluded that in an emergency, those generators could operate at full capacity for longer periods using diesel as a fuel.

It looks like the AEMO plan was to truck the diesel to the power generators, but clearly storage would be required. It was not an unreasonable strategy for the worst case scenario.

Uhlmann in setting out how the AEMO strategy fell apart gave thanks to research work by the Queensland based Global Power Energy who revealed that in the 2024 Autumn the renewables generation availability for NSW, Victoria and South Australia fell to about half AEMO’s “worse case scenario” during three separate week long slumps.

Now AEMO’s “worst case” scenario is the norm, so a new worst case scenario must be established. Accordingly, if the current diesel fuel for gas power stations strategy is maintained it be necessary for much greater amounts of diesel to be used in the gas generators which could cause long term harm.

Huge diesel storage facilities will now be required. For data centres and other big power users, that situation is too risky, and they will need to substantially expand their existing back-up diesel power generation and storage facilities. Once the message gets out, diesel generators will spring up in most supermarkets and other users where electricity is vital.

Two events last weekend underlined the situation. The first was the Prime Minister’s wedding, where most of the inner cabinet were guests. Bowen was not in attendance so it is unlikely that the Uhlmann revelation would have been discussed. But the phones would have been running after the weekend.

Secondly, on that same weekend, there was an enormous recycling plant fire in Sydney. The explosion caused a huge fireball. The fire had absolutely nothing to do with the power grid, but it underlined the danger of the large diesel storage facilities that will be required alongside data centres and gas power stations.

Is there any way out of this mess? I put forward seven scenarios, but there will be more.

• Plough on with renewables and hope that somewhere the wind will blow while the sun is not shining. This is a very high-risk strategy and should not be contemplated. A viable plan for a renewables drought must worked out.

• Keep coal stations going as long as possible until there is a solution.

• Install diesel storage tanks near major power using facilities like data centres, and encourage those with operations where power is essential (like supermarkets) to install diesel generators.

• Look for rooftop solar hydro and battery opportunities

• Widen gas pipelines and urgently get more gas to gas fired power stations. Erect new gas fired stations

• Instead of phasing out coal, put the coal-fired power stations in “storage” and turn them on when the new BOM computer forecasts a wind/solar drought. This is not a good way to use coal.

• Replace coal with small nuclear plants. This is the lowest cost and simplest solution, but the anti-nuclear forces have become akin to a religion in large areas of the ALP. But there are some people in the ALP who are now concluding that the political equivalent of the Second Vatican Council is required.

The Coalition was lucky. Had it decided to back the government in nil emissions by 2050 they would be on the wrong foot when the parliamentary debate on who knew what and when plus solutions takes centre stage in the next parliamentary sitting.

Matt Kean talked a big game as NSW Energy Minister, promising that the shift from coal to renewable energy would save households $130 every year.

Five years later, the average household energy bill in NSW has risen by between $380 and $530, depending on the provider.

Even if we allow for inflation, that’s an increase up to $190 a year.

On Wednesday, Andrew Clennell asked Kean when power bills would stop rising and when the promised reductions would kick in.

Kean: “When we get on with the job of rolling out renewables at scale. We know it’s the cheapest form of electricity.”

Clennell: “How many years does that take?”

Kean: “This is a transitionary period that we’re going through. We’ll be going through it for the next period of time.”

The free-jam-tomorrow arguments from renewable energy advocates are wearing thin.

So are the ever-changing excuses.

In 2022, Kean blamed Vladimir Putin.

He told the NSW Parliament that the war in Ukraine was driving up gas prices and consequently the cost of generating electricity.

Since then, global gas prices have fallen, and Kean has found a new scapegoat.

“One of the reasons we’re having more expensive electricity is because of the price of coal,” he told Clennell.

He dismissed a Page Research Centre report that claimed the coal was the cheapest form of generation as “rubbish”.

In his new job as chair of the Climate Change Authority, Kean finds himself on the payroll of a government that has its own explaining to do about unfilled promises of lower prices.

In November 2022, Treasurer Jim Chalmers was asked by Laura Jayes why power prices had started going up after the May federal election.

Weren’t they supposed to be on the way down, in accordance with Labor’s promise to cut $275 off annual household power bills in its first term?

Chalmers insisted that renewables would eventually make electricity cheaper.

“But there’s no use pretending that there won’t be pressure on household budgets from high electricity prices in the interim,” he said.

Who knows if Chalmers’ “interim” will be shorter or longer than Kean’s “next few years”?

What we do know is that we’ve been duped by governments that did not tell us we’d spend an indefinite period in power-price purgatory before arriving in paradise.

What’s more, neither Chalmers nor Kean will hazard a guess about how long this period will last or how much we’ll have to spend in the meantime.

Chalmers agreed with Kean this week that ageing coal generators were to blame for rising power prices.

The Opposition’s plan to keep coal generators running for as long as possible was “economic insanity”, he told Sky News.

Prices would come down once coal was eliminated.

It’s a claim that might puzzle consumers in Britain, where the last coal-fired power station was retired a year ago.

Yet electricity prices are 60 per cent higher in coal-free Britain than in Australia.

Britons pay almost twice as much for electricity as customers in Poland, which has one of the most coal-intensive electricity systems in the world.

Britain’s Budget offers far more transparency into the subsidies and charges that make renewable energy so expensive than ours does.

In Britain, as in Australia, renewable energy infrastructure would be impossible to finance without government subsidies and guarantees that underpin profitability.

No sensible lender would back a business with substantial up-front costs and an uncertain return in a market where the spot price changes 288 times a day.

For all the claims that renewables are cheaper, projects would be economically unviable without government support.

Not so coal generation, which looks increasingly profitable as the need for reliable base load grows.

In 2024, a desperate NSW government offered Origin Energy up to $225 million a year to keep Eraring power station running beyond the planned 2025 closure date.

Recently, Origin announced it was considering keeping Eraring operating until the end of the decade.

The plant is so profitable that Origin has not yet called in the subsidies.

Ageing coal plants might be heavy on maintenance, but the capital costs of construction have long since been recovered, making the marginal cost of producing a unit of electricity cheap.

Coal generators benefit from fluctuations in spot prices, throttling back in the middle of the day when a glut of solar energy drives prices down and ramping up in the evenings when prices go up.

The economic complexities are such that power prices hardly need explaining to most consumers, those for whom rising power prices are a reality, rather than an exercise in financial modelling.

The popular definition of insanity – doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results – neatly describes the government’s energy policy.

This year will go down in history as the year the energy sector woke up to AI. Every energy conference offers multiple sessions on the subject, and they are standing room only. Last year’s Electricity Market Report published by the International Energy Agency (IEA) contained not one single mention of data centers, this year’s report had a whole section on them.

This is also the year AI woke up to energy. The most powerful tech titans in the world have been humbled by the realization that their plans for world domination could be stymied by something as prosaic as electricity – and have embarked on a land grab for whatever sources of dispatchable power they can, triggering something of a gold rush.

Is the data center power frenzy just the latest of a long line of energy sector bubbles, or is it the dawning of a new normal? Do data centers create such strong demand pull-through that they trigger a new era of new-build nuclear, geothermal and other clean, dispatchable technologies? Or do they just suck up existing sources of clean power and increase the use of fossil fuels, causing a wave of resentment and regulation?

There is much to untangle, so let’s get started.

A (very) brief history of AI

AI has been around for many decades, during which time it has undergone multiple Gartner Hype Cycles. Anyone old enough will remember the excitement in 1997, when IBM’s Deep Blue defeated chess champion Garry Kasparov – but all the public saw were slightly better chess computers. In the 2000s, machine learning led to breakthroughs in computer vision, but the only mass market product that resulted was a robot vacuum cleaner that couldn’t avoid dog poop.

In the 2010s, deep learning and natural language processing arrived. Suddenly Facebook could identify cat videos, vehicles could avoid collisions, Google Translate could read articles in any language, and social media algorithms could… well, let’s not go there. Nevertheless, AI-powered services were far from impressive. Siri would interrupt conversations at random, supermarket checkouts were still fooled by “unexpected items in bagging area” and chatbots were utterly useless.

All that changed over two years between November 2020 and November 2022. First Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold2 proved it could predict protein structures, and then ChatGPT was launched. Suddenly AI could prove mathematical theorems, make medical and materials science breakthroughs, improve weather forecasting, generate images and videos from text prompts, and write better computer code than humans. Boom!

Nvidia, the world’s leading provider of graphics processing units (GPUs), originally designed for video games but ideally suited for the computationally heavy tasks associated with generative AI, was swamped with orders. Its share price soared by a factor of 10, giving it a market value of over $3 trillion, making it one of the most valuable companies in the world and putting it in a league mainly populated by other AI heavyweights Microsoft, Meta (Facebook), Amazon and Apple. Nothing trumpeted the dawn of the age of AI more loudly than Nvidia replacing Intel last month in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Stephen Schwarzman, chairman and CEO of Blackstone, the world’s largest private equity investor, announced that the consequences of AI will be “as profound as what occurred in 1880 when Thomas Edison patented the electric light bulb”.

And then it dawned on everyone that the rate-limiting factor in the growth of AI was not going to be compute power, it was going to be electrical power.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and owner of Twitter and X.ai, noted in March this year that “we have silicon shortage today, a transformer shortage in about a year, and electricity shortages in about two years”. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, claimed his company would build more data centers if it could get more power.

Sam Altman, founder and CEO of OpenAI, summed up: “We still don’t appreciate the energy needs of this technology… there’s no way to get there without a breakthrough… we need fusion or we need radically cheaper solar plus storage, or something”. Those trying to find clean power for energy-intensive industries could be forgiven a little schadenfreude.

We’ve been here before

At the dawn of this century, companies were managing their own “on-premise” data centers. Electricity was the last thing on the mind of the average CIO. When the Internet exploded onto the scene, it spawned new digital business models, generated vast volumes of video, and drove a massive increase in system complexity, risk and power demand. In 1999, Peter Huber and Mark Mills wrote a piece for Forbes claiming that “it was reasonable to project half of the electric grid will be powering the digital-Internet economy within the next decade.”

In 2007, tasked with reporting to Congress on the environmental implications of the internet, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) noted that US data center power use had doubled between 2000 and 2006 to around 1.5% of total power use and raised the specter of it doubling again by 2011, significantly slowing the retirement of the US’s aging fleet of coal-fired power stations.

It didn’t happen. Companies began shifting operations to the Cloud, achieving over 90% efficiency gains from a combination of new servers with bigger and faster chips, economies of scale, and better infrastructure. The average Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) – the ratio of total power used in a data center to the power used by its servers – dropped to 1.5 in 2021 from 2.7 in 2007, with the best data centers now delivering PUEs as low as 1.1. In 2011, data centers were still using less than 2% of total US power.

This prompted Professor Jonathan Koomey, then of Stanford University and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, to formulate what has become known as Koomey’s Law: the energy efficiency of compute doubles every 18 months for six decades, almost exactly matching Moore’s Law improvements in computer performance.

It didn’t take long for another wave of data-center power panic to set in. In 2015, two researchers from Huawei, Anders Andrae and Tomas Edler, forecast that data centers would be using up to 1,700 terawatt-hours of power by 2022, over 6% of global electricity. In 2017, the World Economic Forum and Newsweek breathlessly announced that cryptocurrency mining could consume all the world’s electric power by 2020.

That didn’t happen either. Crypto-mining became more efficient, regulators stepped in, Ethereum and other coins moved from proof-of-work to proof-of stake, and the crypto bubble burst. Throughout the 2010s, data centers remained well under 1.5% of global power demand, a bit higher in the US, a bit lower elsewhere.

In 2020, however, data-center power demand did finally begin to take off, in part driven by the response to Covid lockdowns, and in part because the trend toward outsourcing to Cloud-based data centers was running out of steam. But it was also because AI began to drive increases in compute complexity: Single-chip central processing units (CPUs) drawing 100 to 200 watts began giving way to graphics processing units (GPUs) drawing up to 700 watts.

So, is the great data center power panic different this time? To reach a view, we need to answer the following questions:

1. How fast will demand for AI services develop?

2. What will AI data centers look like and where will they be?

3. How many data centers will be built?

4. Which wins: Koomey’s Law or the Jevons effect?

5. What power sources will be used to meet demand?

6. What will be the impact of AI on the broader economy?

1. If they build it, will we come?

How quickly will AI eat the world? Who knows. As Bill Gates says: “We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten.”

You certainly can’t just extrapolate a long-term trend from people trying apps for free. One of the reasons I held off writing this article until today was to get a sense of the real value AI would create in my own daily life. Like everyone, I played with ChatGPT3 and Microsoft Image Generator, but I was not prompted to put my hand in my pocket.

Recently, however, I have started to use Perplexity AI, which has dramatically reduced my use of Google Search, Elicit, to review and summarize academic literature and Replit, to create databases. I have probably used them 500 times while writing this article, and I have started to pay for them – though not more than a few hundred dollars a year.

At some point, users will have to meet all the costs associated with AI services. In September last year, David Cahn, a partner at venture capital company Sequoia Capital, posed what he called AI’s $200 billion question. Cahn estimated that, to justify the capital expenditures implied by Nvidia’s near-term revenue pipeline, the tech giants would need to generate annual revenue from AI services of $200 billion. In June this year, with Nvidia’s sales forecasts soaring, he updated the figure to $600 billion. Cahn estimated near-term AI revenue at a maximum of $100 billion, leaving a $500 billion hole – equivalent to just under half the aggregate revenue of Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and Google parent Alpha.

If you assume the required $600 billion annual revenue will come from around a billion highly connected people in the world, each would have to spend an average of $600 per year, either as direct payments to AI providers or indirect payments for AI integrated into services used at home or at work. It’s not an outrageous amount – a similar magnitude to cell phone bills – but it is hard to see how it could quickly be met out of existing budgets across such a large swath of the global population.

Alternatively, if you assume the $600 billion will be borne by just the world’s 100 million wealthiest and most intensive users of digital services, they or their employers would need to come up with a much larger $6,000 per year. Again, it’s not an impossible figure, but not one that can be found in next year’s budget. Meanwhile, planned capital expenditures by tech titans has continued to increase, so the required annual revenue per user keeps increasing.

So, while it’s clear that AI is set to be truly transformative, it could still take a decade to justify current levels of investment. What that means is that there are two possible futures: One in which capital markets are happy to allow the hyperscalers to keep throwing money at AI in the expectation of future market leadership (and blowing out their balance sheets in the process), and one in which they are not.

Experience from previous technology revolutions – electric light, railways, the Internet, blockchain – suggests we could be in for a bumpy ride.

2. It’s a data center, but not as we know it

Training a generative AI model requires power. A lot of power. It also requires that power to be concentrated in one location, so that tens or hundreds of thousands (and perhaps ultimately millions) of GPUs can communicate with each other without latency. There is a demonstrated relationship between training scale and ultimate AI model performance – the perfect recipe for an arms race.

The stakes could not be higher. Last year, Meta hit the pause button on its entire data center construction program, even demolishing one that had been partly constructed, and started again using a new, AI-ready design.

According to the IEA, the more than 11,000 data centers worldwide have an average power capacity of less than 10MW. Even the average hyperscaler data center is currently only around 30MW. However, the average data center has been getting bigger, and data centers are increasingly clustered onto campuses – two trends that put extreme pressure on the electrical grid. The Northern Virginia data center cluster, the largest in the world at around 2.5 gigawatts, soaks up around 20% of the region’s electrical power, growing at around 25% per year. In 2022, local energy provider Dominion Energy had to pause new connections for several months. In Ireland, last year power consumption from data centers reached 21% of the country’s total, up from 5% in 2015, prompting EirGrid, the transmission system operator to issue a moratorium on the development of new data centres in Dublin until 2028.

In a 2021 white paper, I postulated that data center operators would have to move non-latency-critical loads to what I called green giants — multi-hundred-megawatt data centers located outside city limits. Powered by clean electricity, they would be expected to support, rather than disrupt, the grid. It was radical stuff at the time, but it’s happening: large data center developments are shifting from urban areas to where they can find power.

Today, data centers used to train AI models tend to be in the 75MW to 150MW range. Most of those in construction are between 100MW and 250MW, with a few green giants between 500MW and 1GW. What the tech industry really wants, though, is AI-training data centers between 1GW and 2GW. Microsoft and OpenAI are in discussions about a $100 billion, 5GW supercomputer complex called Stargate. Amazon has said it plans to spend $150 billion in the next 15 years on data centers. Last month KKR and energy investor Energy Capital Partners entered an agreement to invest up to $50 billion in AI data centers. BlackRock has launched a $30 billion AI infrastructure fund.

These huge data centers will be as complex and expensive as aircraft carriers or nuclear submarines. The building alone for a 1GW data center will set you back up to $12 billion – for vibration-proof construction, power supply, UPS systems, cooling, and so on. 100,000 GPUs could cost you another $4 billion, and that’s before you have installed chip-based or immersive liquid cooling, and super-high-bandwidth, low-latency communications.

For AI training, latency is not an issue, so data centers can be anywhere in the world with fiber connections, building permits, skills, security and data privacy. However, when it comes to “inference” – using the model to answer questions – results have to be delivered to the user without latency, and that means data centers in or near cities. They may look like the data centers with which we are familiar, but they will need to be larger. According to EPRI, a single ChatGPT query requires around 2.9 watt-hours, compared to just 0.3 watt-hours for a Google search, driving a potential order of magnitude more power demand. Even inference data centers will need to be 100MW or above.

3. With great AI power comes great power demand

Nothing illustrates the current uncertainty about the uptake of AI better than the range of forecasts for power demand, which span from a paltry 35% global increase between now and 2030, to a storming 250% growth in the US alone by 2028.

The IEA is one of the most conservative voices. Its main Stated Policies Scenario (STEPS) has global power demand (excluding crypto mining and IT networks) increasing only by 35% to 100% by 2030, adding between 120TWh and 390TWh of demand – an increase that could be met by less than 50GW of additional dispatchable power. The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is also at the conservative end, expecting U.S. data center load to grow by no more than two thirds to 2030, adding between 21GW and 35GW of demand.

Such low figures are hard to justify. Chat GPT3 was trained using a cluster of 10,000 GPUs; Chat GPT4 required 25,000 GPUs; Chat GPT5 a rumored 50,000. Elon Musk’s x.AI has just built a 100,000-GPU data center, and there is already talk of the first million-GPU data center this side of 2030. But it’s not only a question numbers of GPUs – they are also becoming more energy-hungry. Nvidia’s Ampere A100 GPU, Launched in 2020, drew up to 400W. The Hopper H100, launched two years later and the current industry standard, draws 700W. The Nvidia Blackwell B100, expected to ship by the end of this year, will draw up to 1,200W. A single rack of 72 Blackwell GPUs, along with its balance of system, will draw up to 120kW – as much as 100 US or 300 European homes.

Boston Consultancy Group sees US data-center power demand tripling to 7.5% of US power in 2030 from 2.5% in 2022. Goldman Sachs expects the figure to reach 8%, requiring an additional 47GW of dispatchable supply. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) offers four scenarios, with the most aggressive showing total US power consumption reaching 9.1% in 2030. McKinsey is the most bullish of all, predicting that global data-center demand might grow by 240GW between 2023 and 2030, and that in the US they could absorb up to 12% of all power by 2030.

The most detailed demand analysis is by independent semiconductor supply chain specialists Semi Analysis. They have built a model based on analyst consensus for the number of GPUs in Nvidia’s sales pipeline, noting for instance that the three million AI accelerators expected to ship in 2024 alone would require up to 4.2GW of dispatchable power. Their base case has global data center demand tripling to around 1,500 terawatt-hours by 2030, growing from around 1.5% to 4.5% of total global power demand and requiring the building of 100GW of new dispatchable power supply.

Semi Analysis, however, goes one step further. They note that new AI data centers will not be evenly distributed around the world. They estimate that Europe today hosts only 4% of AI compute capacity; its commercial power prices are around double those of the US and, as Semi Analysis puts it, with some understatement, “adding a massive amount of power generation capacity to host the AI data center boom in Europe would be very challenging.”

China, the country most able to build generation capacity at warp speed, is banned from buying Nvidia’s latest products. Although it is understood to have gained access to small numbers of Blackwell GPUs, and Huawei is working closely with the government to catch up by any means possible, China is judged to be five years behind the US. The Gulf region is very keen to play a leading role in AI. The UAE has had a Minister for AI since 2017. Google is discussing an AI hub with Saudi Arabia’s $930 billion Public Investment Fund, and Neom is reported to be considering a 1GW data center. However, experience is minimal, and the privacy and security implications are daunting.

For the next few years, therefore, the majority of new AI data center capacity will be built in the US. Semi Analysis estimates that US data center power demand will surge 250% by 2030, absorbing nearly 15% of total power and requiring the building of 76GW of new dispatchable supply…

Conclusion

Let me close with some predictions about how the great data-center power gold rush will play out.

In the end, the tech titans will find out that the best way to power AI data centers is in the traditional way, by building the same generating technologies as are proving most cost effective for other users, connecting them to a robust and resilient grid, and working with local communities. More, in other words, of what the best of them are already doing.

For instance, it may look easy to co-locate power plants with data centers, but it won’t be. That would multiply the complexity of building the data center by the complexity of building and running the plant. This would be particularly risky if the plant in question is an innovative and unproven nuclear design. If you build the plant off-grid, what you save on transmission fees you will spend dealing yourself with every potential mismatch between demand and supply. And if you remain grid-connected, you have achieved nothing by co-locating, as you still have to meet all the rules set by the grid operator and regulator.

Just as for other industries that risk imposing significant externalities on those around them, AI data-center owners will reduce cost and risk not by centralizing assets and building a wall around them, but by working with other stakeholders. Who knows, by leaning in, hyperscalers could even become popular contributors to the development of an affordable, resilient and green local grid.

How do you build an AI data center that, like the Green Giants I proposed in 2021, is a benefit to the local community? How do you deal with its impacts on water supply, air quality and local skills, so you are not confronted by protestors like the ones pushing back against additional data centers in Northern Virginia or new ones in Santiago, Chile, Memphis, Tennessee, and Hertfordshire in the UK?

It makes no sense for a data center and the local utility to invest separately in emergency backup resources. The data-center owner may want local backup to be sure it can ride through grid outages; the utility may want central backup to ride through periods of low wind or solar provision, or may need to add capacity to meet increasing demand. In 2016, Microsoft struck a deal with Black Hills Energy (formerly Cheyenne Light, Fuel and Power Co.) which gave it lower cost power in exchange for using its backup generators as a power resource for the grid as needed, eliminating the need for Black Hills Energy to build an additional plant. This sort of deal needs to become the norm, not the exception.

The Electric Power Research Institute in the US has just launched the DCFlex Initiative, intended to explore how data centers can support and stabilize the grid. For instance, when they see how much it costs to work 24/7 at full power, perhaps data-center owners will see a benefit to providing some demand response capacity, or to modifying their ramp-up and ramp-down rates (which could otherwise be fearsome).

When it comes to new technologies – be it SMRs, fusion, novel renewables or superconducting transmission lines – it is a blessing to have some cash-rich, technologically advanced, risk-tolerant players creating demand, which has for decades been missing in low-growth developed world power markets. Rather than focusing selfishly on funding them for their own use, however, the hyper scalers should help to underwrite their development and deployment in a grid-optimized way. Not only would this be more efficient for the overall economy, it could also help them secure their social license to operate, during what will be a period of extreme technological and social turbulence.

Firebrand British parliamentarian Tony Benn knew a thing or two about power. If we want to hold our leaders to account, he suggested, we should ask the following five questions:

“What power do you have? How did you get it? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? And how can we get rid of you?”

When it comes to data centers, he certainly had a point.

Finally, in case you are concerned that humans may be about to be replaced by machines, relax. After all this talk of gigawatt data centers, it is worth recalling one key statistic: Our brains operate on around 20W. Seen like that, we are still beating the machines by around eight orders of magnitude. Humanity is not done yet!

The cost of living has chalked up four years uninterrupted as the number one issue of concern for voters and, with inflation back on the march again, that concern shows no sign of abating.

At the same time, public pessimism over social cohesion is also growing, as cost-of-living pressures continue to grind.

The findings are contained in the latest True Issues survey by JWS Research, which in November 2021 was the first public polling exercise to highlight concern about the cost of living as prices spiked due to supply chain constraints and over-stimulus.

Back then, even though the nation was still in the grip of the coronavirus pandemic, the cost of living moved into first place ahead of health for the first time.

It was cited by 59 per cent as an issue of concern, pipping healthcare and ageing by 1 percentage point. It rocketed to as high as 81 per cent in October 2023 but has never fallen below 70 per cent.

In the latest survey, which is conducted quarterly, 77 per cent of voters listed cost of living as one of their top five issues of concern, followed by the closely related issue of housing supply and affordability.

Hospitals and healthcare was next at 48 per cent, followed by the economy and finances on 35 per cent, while the environment and climate change was tied with immigration on 26 per cent.

The government, whose budget is under enormous pressure, had been hoping cost of living would subside with inflation, so much so that after the election, it began cutting back on assistance. In August, for example, it lifted the deeming rate on pensions from the pandemic emergency levels, as “Australians begin to feel the positive impacts of inflation easing”.

But with new data this week showing annual inflation back to 3.8 per cent and creating political pressure to extend assistance, economists are urging the government to rein in spending and return inflation to the Reserve Bank’s target band of 2-to-3 per cent.

They argue the best way to ease the cost of living is to lower inflation.

“The cause of cost-of-living pain is inflation,” said budget expert and economist Chris Richardson. “The politics of cost-of-living assistance is good … but it’s too much money chasing too little stuff.”

On a net basis, it exacerbates inflation by sustaining or increasing demand while doing nothing to improve supply.

On December 16, the government will publish its mid-year budget update at which it must decide whether to extend the power bill discount program on which it has already spent $6.8 billion.

“Now is the time to start tightening the screws,” AMP chief economist Shane Oliver said. “The inflation spike has raised the stakes.”

He said the government had tried to protect Australians from cost-of-living pressures, but in doing so, had made the inflation problem worse.

“The longer we leave it, the closer we get to the next election, and we know that governments do not like cutting spending close to elections.”

The True Issues survey sampled the views of 1000 voters earlier this month, before the inflation data was released.

As well as canvassing issues of concern, it asks voters to rate the government’s handling of each.

The government received the lowest rating of 27 per cent each for cost of living and housing supply and affordability, but did better on healthcare and immigration at 42 per cent apiece.

The survey also found voters beginning to despair over the state of society, which JWS director John Scales said was not unrelated to four years of economic hardship.

The data showed 35 per cent believed the country was either extremely divided or very divided, a jump of 8 percentage points since the middle of last year.

One representative quote from those surveyed was: “No matter how much the salary hike is, or taking extra jobs, or promotions, we never seem to have enough.”

‘It’s a sacrifice I won’t make’: Inside the child-free by choice movement

Australia’s birthrate is plummeting and our population is no longer replacing itself. According to women like Alexis, life is just too stressful and too expensive.

Over more than six months researching this piece, ­Panaretos was one of many women I spoke to on and off the record about their decision not to have children. While some changed their mind about participating in this article over that period, none have so far changed their mind about their decision not to procreate.

Panaretos says she and her husband love their serene, spontaneous life. Despite her certainty, she says there is always an unspoken expectation from people she meets and some family (although her parents support her decision) that one day she’ll change her mind and wake up with a powerful urge to become a mother, her biological clock ­finally sounding its alarm.

It’s the sound some politicians are hoping to trigger as they explore ways to boost the birthrate amid the strain of an ageing population. Former prime minister John Howard recently floated the idea of reintroducing the baby bonus, a scheme that gave new parents a lump-sum payment after the birth of a child. When it was introduced in 2004 it was $3000; it was meant to address the low birth rate of 1.73. And it worked, slightly, with Australia’s birthrate ­increasing to 1.96, its highest for that decade. But since 2009 it has been sharply falling.

While the declining birthrate in Australia is well documented, the reasons for it are varied and hard to pinpoint: the cost of living, fertility challenges and climate uncertainty have all been cited. Experts are divided on whether ­income and the cost of child-rearing plays a part. The emerging narrative from women in the “child-free by choice” community stems from the unequal burden of parenthood, with little systemic support.

In 2012, a report by the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) put the cost of raising a child in a high-income household (around $260,000 a year) at a staggering $1.09 million. The research doesn’t take into account major expenses such as child care, which costs on average $150 to $200 a day in Australian cities, or larger financial decisions such as private education, which can top $40,000 a year. One of the original authors, ­Associate Professor Ben Phillips from the ANU Centre for Social Policy Research tells this magazine: “The cost of younger children may have increased a lot more since then and that’s because people are spending more on child care these days. Middle to high income earners tend to spend 15 per cent of their annual disposable income on one child.”

The high cost of raising a child – and the potential loss of income, superannuation, career growth and identity – is a lot for some women to contend with.

Not to be confused with people who are childless by circumstance, people who choose to be child-free say there is still some trepidation when telling others about their choice, for fear of judgment. The pressure for women to become mothers still exists in modern society, even if women are choosing to have fewer children. And so a kind of societal cognitive dissonance is forming around the fertility problem. For some, it seems, the so-called “maternal instinct” isn’t there. Perhaps it never has for many women, but access to contraception and choice has changed the outcome for them.

A raft of studies and research published around the world reflects alarm at declining birthrates in western countries – Britain’s Financial Times reported that two-thirds of the world’s population now lives in countries where people are having babies at a rate too low to replace their population. The Robert Schuman Foundation has called the phenomenon “demographic suicide” in Europe, compounded by the problems of ageing populations and a fall in living standards.

In Australia, KPMG data highlights the decline in birthrate over the past decade in the inner-city and suburbia – typically higher socio-economic areas – as cost-of-living factors play into the decision to have multiple children, contributing to the overall ­decline in the total fertility rate. A recent small bounce in births in the latest official statistics correlates with recent growth in disposable income, says KPMG urban economist Terry Rawnsley. But it’s nowhere near enough to correct the decline. Other experts entirely dispute the relevance of economic factors at all. So what do ­Australian women really think?

The most powerful intelligence alliance in the world is breaking up. In January, Donald Trump restricted intelligence-sharing on Russia and Ukraine, cutting allies out of negotiations and freezing certain channels entirely. Then in March came the so-called “Ukraine intel blackout,” an unprecedented freeze that shut Britain and Australia out of updates on Russian troop movements. And last month, the Dutch said they were scaling back intelligence-sharing with America over fears of “politicization.”

Trump tends to treat intelligence as leverage, a tool to reward countries that fall in line with Washington and punish those that don’t. In his hands, intelligence and secrets have become bargaining chips. But by holding information back, he’s weaponizing the very trust that built the western alliance and sustained the power of the Anglosphere. The “Five Eyes” – the spying network that comprises the US, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia – is not a commercial arrangement. It can’t survive if its members start haggling over access.

More broadly, the alliance allows governments to spy on their own citizens through one another’s networks, sharing the results without technically breaking their own laws.

We like to believe our governments need warrants, oversight and law to reach into our private lives. In truth, the invasion of privacy in the West takes place on an industrial scale. Almost every phone call, search and message passes through a web of monitoring that’s rarely acknowledged and almost never constrained by law. Its defenders insist this cooperation keeps the West safe. Its critics call it institutionalized hypocrisy. Both are right to a degree.

American law forbids the National Security Agency from targeting US citizens without a warrant. British law requires GCHQ to obtain one under the Investigatory Powers Act. So the NSA collects on Britons. GCHQ collects on Americans. Data is exchanged. It’s a system built on plausible deniability. Each agency claims it is merely receiving “foreign intelligence.” The scale of the intelligence-gathering and analysis is staggering.

The US’s NSA alone intercepts hundreds of millions of text messages, emails and call records every day. Under its “Upstream” and “Prism” programs, the agency taps the world’s main fiber-optic cables and demands user data directly from US tech giants. Britain’s matching operation, GCHQ’s “Tempora,” stores three days of transatlantic internet traffic at any one time, with metadata retained for a month. Australia’s Signals Directorate monitors entire oceanic cable systems linking Asia to the Pacific. Canada’s Communications Security Establishment sits astride the Atlantic routes into North America, feeding bulk intercepts into shared databases that analysts in all five countries and beyond can query.

The alliance’s reach extends into almost every form of modern communication – mobile networks, satellite relays and social media platforms. Few of its targets are terrorists or spies. The agreement that started this system, known as UKUSA, was signed in 1946. It has never been ratified by any legislative body and remains classified in full. What we know comes from leaks, court rulings and declassified scraps. Over the years, the network has quietly expanded beyond its original five members to include associate and “third-party” partners in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. These extensions, often referred to as “Nine Eyes” or “Fourteen Eyes,” have turned the alliance into a sprawling global surveillance web, linking western intelligence agencies through shared databases, cables and monitoring systems that cover the planet.

The Five Eyes were born of Churchill’s idea of “the English-speaking people,” bound by language, law and a shared sense of moral purpose. Yet the values that once made Five Eyes a moral community have fractured. Today, the alliance binds countries that no longer see liberty, privacy or speech in the same way. In Britain, police arrest citizens for online “hate incidents.” In Canada, the government froze protesters’ bank accounts. Australia’s diplomats helped ignite an FBI investigation into a US presidential candidate.

The secrecy and the overreach are real, but Trump’s crusade against Five Eyes is not about curbing surveillance. It’s about dominance over the system. At the start of the year, the President began starving Washington’s allies of intelligence they’d once taken for granted. Then screenshots from a White House Signal chat appeared online, revealing private exchanges between senior aides discussing US military options in Yemen, shared by allies. The breach exposed not only sensitive operations but also the chaotic way Trump’s team handled classified material. British and Australian intelligence officers were said to be furious, prompting allies to scale back contributions. Former GCHQ staff described a collapse of confidence among the Five Eyes intelligence services.

London and Canberra have since formed smaller, closed sub-groups to coordinate without US participation. Canada, meanwhile, has scaled back its contributions after Trump publicly threatened to expel it from the alliance altogether, following months of tariff disputes. Inside Washington, intelligence veterans describe an atmosphere of suspicion not seen since the Cold War.

For Trump and his allies, the intelligence alliance is not a bond of friendship, but a nest of unelected bureaucrats, the “deep state abroad.” To him, distrust is not paranoia but prudence. He views the exchange of intelligence as a transaction and intelligence itself as a commodity. That’s not altogether wrong. The Five Eyes alliance has always been transactional, a system of barter between intelligence services, trading data for access, reach or favor. Trump’s battle is not against the surveillance itself. He is targeting the independence of allies who refuse to submit. Intelligence does not obey the laws of supply and demand. It depends on the unspoken belief that what is shared will not be politicized. Once that trust collapses, the value of the intelligence collapses with it. Trump is destroying Five Eyes by destroying the trust that underpins it. Whether that’s deliberate or not is hard to say.

Australia’s two main conservative parties are expected to agree on a new policy position on Sunday that would abandon the goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions – the global target required to stave off environmentally destructive climate change.

The Liberal Party has at the same time also declared that, if elected, it would remain a signatory to the Paris Agreement, a 2015 pact to limit global average temperature increases to “well below 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels” by the end of the century.

Though the argument is entirely academic, given the Coalition is not in government, the idea has nevertheless raised a question of whether such a policy could be pursued without disqualifying Australia from Paris – and whether other comparable countries are already doing so.

The answer is not straightforward.

What does Paris require?

The Paris accord is designed to be flexible, allowing each country to find its own path to the overall global goal of achieving a balance of emissions in the atmosphere and keeping temperature rises to an environmentally sustainable level.

The main lever to achieve that global target is through the setting of progressively increasing individual national targets at five-year intervals, reflecting each country’s highest possible ambition.

The agreement acts as a system of collective encouragement or peer pressure, meaning that while countries are required to set targets, there is no mandated minimum level of ambition. There is nothing in the Paris Agreement requiring a country to have a net zero target; it is simply what is scientifically required to stabilise global temperatures.

Nor are there penalties for missing the national goals. Theoretically, a country could set a net zero target and a series of aggressive short-term goals, enact no policies to achieve them and not be in breach of Paris.

However, the agreement does explicitly forbid backsliding on an existing target. Submitting a target that is lower than the previous one would eliminate it from the pact – although given the voluntary nature of the whole arrangement, it’s unlikely a backsliding country would be forbidden from attending COP, the UN’s forum for climate negotiations.

Nevertheless, if a future Coalition government were to submit new targets lower than Australia’s existing goals of a 43 per reduction by 2030 and 62-70 per cent cuts by 2035 – which Liberal leader Sussan Ley says is now the intention – it could not officially remain a party to the agreement.

However, if it simply left Australia’s official Paris targets untouched but redirected domestic policies towards lower goals, that would still be within the rules – if not their spirit.

Are any other countries in breach of the agreement?

The US under Donald Trump is the only country to completely withdraw from the Paris Agreement, a process that it began in 2024.

Globally, many countries are slowing their ambition and tweaking their climate plans. To date, though, no signatory country has wound back an existing target.

It is often reported that two of the world’s largest emitters, China and India, are breaching the rules of the Paris Agreement because they have set their deadlines for achieving net zero at 2060 and 2070 respectively, rather than 2050.

In reality, as Paris does not explicitly mandate net zero or achieving it by a particular date, and both countries have continued to set increasing – albeit modest – short-term targets, neither have technically broken any rules.

Criticism of China and India’s targets instead stems from the fact that they are lower than other major economies and are not ambitious enough to meet scientific requirements for net zero by mid-century.

There are also a handful of OECD countries – such as Norway, Poland and the Czech Republic – which have no net zero target at all. Somewhat perversely, because they have never set the target, they can remain a policy laggard without breaching the rules.

Are other nations doing more than Australia?

It’s not easy to make a straightforward comparison between countries because not all Paris signatories measures their emissions cuts off the same baselines.

The European Union, for example, tracks emissions cuts from 1990 levels, making their 55 per cent 2030 target significantly tougher than most other jurisdictions. Japan, by contrast, is aiming for a 46 per cent cut on 2013 levels by the same date.

Australia’s baseline is 2005, which marked the peak of its historic carbon emissions, which it has reduced by about 29 per cent since.

However, Australia sources a comparatively large amount of its emissions cuts from the land sector, banking negative emissions from activities that remove carbon from the atmosphere such as limiting land clearing to allow trees to grow.

Excluding these cuts, gross emissions are down only 2 per cent since 2005, and under existing policies will reach only 33 per cent by 2035, according to think tank Climate Analytics.

Globally, Australia sits somewhere near the middle of the pack. According to a tracker set up by Climate Analytics, Australia is among a bucket of countries including Brazil, Germany, the UK and Japan with “critically insufficient” policies to achieve 1.5 degrees of warming.

But that still puts it ahead of comparable countries such as India, Canada, New Zealand, Turkey and the US.

Whichever way the world slices it, however, the scientific reality is that it is impossible to stop temperature rises unless the planet achieves net zero at some point.

The only way to stop the bath overflowing is to turn off the tap.

What you see on the left is the cover of a book published in Germany in 1933, the year that Hitler came to power. The title says ‘Technif und Wirtschaft im Dritten Reich,’ which translates as ‘Technology and the Economy in the Third Reich’.

Page 47 reads, “The renewable energy is flowing and free.” You read exactly the same thing in today’s renewables propaganda. The opposite is true of course. Renewables may cost us everything.

And just like today’s renewables freaks, the Nazis were also big hydrogen enthusiasts. On page 60 you can read the Nazi plan to use wind power to make hydrogen. This is no different from what the renewable people are promoting today…

In case there is any moral confusion, the Nazis were bad people. They were socialists with bad ideas. Renewable energy was one of them. As a concept, renewable energy is as Nazi as Kristallnacht and Lebensraum, Strength Through Joy, annexing the Sudetenland and Arbeit macht frei. Those who rail against Joy Division while preaching renewables are morally confused….

The reason why we are doing Net Zero to ourselves is the global warming caused by carbon dioxide. One country is going hammer and tongs at putting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and that country is China. Oddly, we are discouraging burning coal in Australia while exporting coal to China. Nobody thinks this is strange except for me. It is an idiotic state of affairs.

China uses our coal to make solar panels which they sell to us. They last 20 years before going to landfill. They aren’t recycled and never will be because that would be too energy intensive for the metals that are smeared as thinly as possible on them. On top of that, they have a cadmium loading of up to 10 grams per square metre which means they have to go to an engineered landfill. Cadmium is more poisonous than lead. Windmills are the same in that the fibreglass blades are not recyclable.

Renewable energy is neither renewable or sustainable. It is a one-way trip to landfill.
