I think I found a better way to reach people than hosting debates with MAGA creators. I’ll explain.

I’ve hosted three of these debates, and knew I wasn’t going to change the mind of anyone I was debating. The point was to give people watching ammo to debate the MAGAs in their lives. It is very rare to change a stranger’s mind on the internet. It is much more likely to be able to reach a family member or a co-worker or a childhood friend. And if I could do that while entertaining people and raising money for charity, all the better.

Unfortunately, the people I’ve debated have been, well, MAGAs. The first one had a ton of strong opinions about strict immigration despite having immigrated to another country. The second accidentally disenfranchised himself. And the third claimed he doesn’t know a woman who has gotten an abortion, to which I replied that I believed him that he doesn’t know any women.

Meanwhile, I was introduced to Jessica Tarlov, whose clips I’m sure you’ve seen. She’s the one democrat on Fox News – and while she’s more centrist than I, I admire the bravery it takes to sit in that snake-filled cave pushing back on their lies.

I was going to interview Jessica to ask her about her forthcoming book (obligatory plug: it’s called “I Disagree” and it’s about having those difficult conversations with people in your life). And then I got an idea. Why don’t I let other people interview her, too?

I’m taking the ticketed digital debate format and turning it into a live show called “This Seems Important”. I and a guest host will discuss the big issues of the day and YOU choose what they are. People in “attendance” from anywhere in the world can suggest topics, ask specific questions, or just sit back and listen as we break down what’s actually happening and why it, well, seems important.

The pilot will be Jessica Tarlov and I, and if you enjoy the format, I’ll do more. I have some pretty dang cool contacts that I can reach out to, from movie stars to elected officials to comedians and political creators way bigger than I. And you can join us from anywhere for some entertainment, education, and empowerment.

The first one will be on September 1^st at 7PM ET, and tickets are on my website. My charity will always be the Steel City Arts Foundation, and Jessica’s is Room To Grow (a charity that provides baby and toddler items to parents who need them).

Patreon sucks, and I finally get to tell them to go fuck themselves. I’ll explain.

The idea of Patreon is great. It allows fans to directly support the creators they believe in. Patreon allows creators to offer fans exclusivity and access they wouldn’t be able to get elsewhere.

Unfortunately Patreon today is what everything funded by VC eventually becomes: a hollow shell of what people liked in the first place.

Despite a policy that bans hate speech, Patreon has platformed more hate speech than the Newsmax booth at CPAC. From people whose content is just videos of them harassing marginalized groups to people with literal swastika tattoos, Patreon’s enforcement of their code of conduct is laughable. And creators have to pay them 10% for the privilege of no real moderation and the kind of customer support that makes Comcast look attentive.

Unfortunately, I was stuck. On the creator side, the support I’ve gotten through Patreon has allowed me to stay completely independent. I release my comedy specials for free, I don’t tour with promoters who jack up ticket prices, and no one controls what I say on social media but me. On the fan side, when I brought up the idea of cancelling Patreon to some of my supporters, I got a resounding no. Sure, the shirts are fun to wear to shows, but the main thing people seemed to want to keep was the community.

I have been trying to find a decent alternative to Patreon for the last three years, and I kept hitting dead ends. So I built one.

You may have noticed that lately I’ve been on a programming spree, creating sites like Tourcery and Pollgebra. But I am particularly excited about this one. The advances in tech and public APIs in the last few years have allowed artists like me to not need to pay Patreon 10% for a worse version of what we can do on our own.

I re-did my website to have a membership club built in. It’s integrated with my Shopify, allowing members to get instant codes to redeem for their shirts and mugs and what not whenever they want. I can embed discount codes for tickets and merch. I can automatically email downloads of my albums. I can send notifications when I have a new video. I can grant members access to tickets before anyone else. Etc, etc. And I don’t have to pay any of it to people who platform nazis.

I built a website to help artists book their tour

If you follow me, you know I’ve never had much of a taste for the rules of the industry. Today, I’m happy to announce other comedians, musicians, and live performers don’t have to either.

Promoters who sell tickets, agents who secure you unique venues, and bookers who are experts at routing are worthwhile. But so many promoters don’t promote. So many agents take calls instead of making them. And so many bookers don’t care if you drive eight hours between gigs because they’re not the ones doing it.

When I fired my agent for signing Kanye, I took it upon myself to book my tour. In the process, I found out just how many venues are happy to deal directly with artists. I began helping book for friends, like Sammy Obeid, Lisandra Vasquez, Cliff Cash, Stormy Daniels, and more. I hired my wife to run my tour. We hired Bailey Ervin to expand booking further. And then, I built a website that could make it all much easier.

In the process, I created a database of almost 300,000 venues around the world and a system that could help any live act book their own tour. Today, I am making it public.

I present Tourcery, which does four main things:

1) Tourcery is the world’s largest directory of venues that have live entertainment. By connecting to Google Maps, Yelp, and several other directories, we constantly remove closed venues, add new ones, and get updated contact information.

Some are giant arenas, some are teeny cafes. Some may even be pizza places that had a singer one time and who will tell you that it was a horrible idea. But the site allows you to filter by size, location, name, cost per seat, and a dozen other categories. Tourcery also allows users to message venues directly, export their search results, and more.

2) Routing can be difficult, so Tourcery makes suggestions for you. You can list your tour dates, and the site suggests cities within striking distance of your route. Are you looking for a stop half-way between two places or closer to one of them? Do you want to avoid anything with a certain distance of existing stops? Are you only looking for metro areas of a specific size? It’s all filterable and connects to the venue directory.

3) No one knows enough about global population to know everywhere they should perform. If you enter your tour into the route planner, Tourcery lets you know where you’re missing. You can limit it to certain countries, states, provinces, or regions. You can tell it you only want large cities or rural areas. You can filter by population and within a certain amount of mileage. And the site will help you find the best possible areas to add – and provide you with the venues in those areas.

4) Keeping track of your calendar is important. Not only can the site handle that, it also looks at major ticketing websites to see some of what else is on the calendar for a certain area. Do you want to see what your competition is? Knowledge is power, and Tourcery provides it.

The site is built with a combination of software, APIs, vibe, and good old-fashioned hand-coding. I have been a hobby programmer since I was 15. I knew being a lonely nerd in high school would come in handy someday.

The site has a free version that lets you use some of the tools (like the route planner) and a few levels of paid that allow different limits on how many venues come up in a search and how many you can contact, etc. A pro account starts at just $9 a month, so if you use it to book one gig a year, it will more than pay for itself. If you use it to book your whole tour, well, you’ll save a fortune. And if you’re one of the good promoters, agents, or bookers, you can use it, too.

Knowing we were going to take Violet to her first game, I found a bunch of baseball sleepers and onesies and took them to the cashier. When I did, the cashier asked “what’s his name?”

“Violet,” I replied.

“His name is Violet?”

“Her name is Violet,” I answered. “A girl can like baseball.”

I knew the cashier meant well. But she, like so many of us, was raised in a world where there are toys and outfits and colors for girls, and toys and outfits and colors for boys. And I don’t want Violet to grow up that way.

When I got home, I wrote down what I was thinking.

“A girl can like baseball. A girl can like dance. A girl can like dresses. A girl can like pants.

A girl can like race cars. A girl can like charms. A girl can like cities. A girl can like farms.

A girl can like science. A girl can like writing. A girl can like swimming. A girl can like fighting.

A girl can like pinks. A girl can like blues. A girl can like coding. A girl can like shoes.

A girl can like gaming. A girl can like trucks. A girl can like bugs. A girl can like ducks.

A girl can like anything she sees in the world.

You don’t have to like something just because you’re a girl.”

I looked through a bunch of children’s illustrators to find a style I liked, and began working with Paulo Duelli to turn the poem into a book.

Today, I got to read it to Violet for the first time. When she gets old enough, I will tell her the story of how she inspired it. Though she may get that from the dedication: “To Violet. Whatever you like, you are loved.”

The book is now available on my website, and hopefully in bookstores soon. If you run a store that wants to carry it, let me know.

I’m a stats nerd. I’m a political nerd. Overall, I am a nerd. But I’m using that for good.

If you followed me in 2020, you know that I called all seven swing states correctly, all before any media outlet, and days before some of them were called by anyone else. I used a fairly simple formula that compared voting trends to where the outstanding votes still were.

I have now injected steroids into that formula and created Pollgebra.com, a completely free website that relies on math (a lot of math) to call elections long before the pundits do. It also has a bunch of other features that allow users to filter and sort past and current election results, counties in each race (including population and share of previous vote), and a whole bunch of other nerdy things.

Elections aren’t about entertainment. They’re about results. Also, you can sign up to get an email the moment Pollgebra’s math calls a particular race. Or a few of the races. Or every one of the races.

The website has easy links to check if you’re registered to vote, dates of all the outstanding primaries and run-offs, and tons more election information. If you’re a nerd like me, you’ll love it. And if you’re a nerd like me, you might have other ideas for what I can add to it and I’m happy to hear them.

My debate with MAGA “creator” Mike Bayles is less than one week away.

I will be debating Mike live on June 9th to raise money for the Steel City Arts Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project. Mainly, I will be debating him to entertain you and make myself laugh.

Mike is graciously taking time out of posting bigoted memes and making confused faces in the bottom corner of stolen reels from other creators. Since the debate was announced, he did that to my reels a few times. Its particularly funny that he has over 100,000 followers across his platforms and even on the reels HE posted of me, all the comments are supporting me. This is going to be so much fun.

He picked the subject of voting rights and I promised not to do any research on it because that will make it so much funnier when I run circles around this Jim Crow-MAGAnon.

Don’t worry, we won’t just be yelling at each other. The debate will be moderated by Nick of @nicksthoughts7, and there will be live fact-checking courtesy of @kellieintheknow (Co-host of The Girls Are podcast). That’s right - live fact-checking. Maybe we could keep score of how many times each of us gets something wrong. I’d guess that’s the only way my score will be lower.
