We are nearing the end of summer break, and while I’m sad to let go of these slow days, I’m ready for my routine again. I’m the type of person that only thrives with a routine, ha! We had a busy summer with several groups of family visiting and a quick trip back home to Kansas City celebrate my parent’s 50th anniversary.

With all the visitors in town, we spent many, many days in the city. And let me tell you, Chicago really shines in the summertime. The beaches, the Riverwalk, the patios, the festivals, the food! I had the best time showing it off.

Right now, I’m chomping at the bit to get back into my regular content schedule. I sat down this week to create my fall content calendar, and I have so many posts planned for the coming weeks.

I just finished another Ann Patchett novel - Tom Lake. I highly recommend the audiobook version which is narrated by the one and only, Meryl Streep.

Other books I read this summer and would recommend for your reading list: The Correspondent, Broken Country, How to Read a Book, Yesteryear (still thinking about this one), and The Story of Arthur Truluv (written by a local author!).

I’ve been saving a little wishlist of items for fall which I’m planning to share later, but it includes this rollneck sweater from J.Crew, this tote bag from Alex Mill (I can’t decide which color), and these Staud Wally Boots.

I’m very intrigued by Sézane’s next chapter. The full drop is August 23rd.

I finally invested in an Oura Ring. I like that it’s much more subtle than an Apple Watch with the new version (the 5) having a super slim profile. It also keeps a charge for 6-9 days which is much much longer than an Apple Watch. That’s my two cents on health trackers, anyway.

Sold Out NYC Not So Basic Tank // I know $90 is a pretty penny to spend on a tank top BUT the quality is there. It’s a substantial weight, too. I love this paired with denim and some sandals (see top photo). I took my true size XS.

Quince Cotton Modal Scoop Neck Tank // I wear a tank of some kind almost everyday in the summer, but I like to vary the style of my tanks to create slightly different proportions in an outfit. This one has a drapey fit and gives a more elevated vibe than a ribbed tank (for the record, I wear both) I own the Redwood Brown color.

Pistola High Rise Kyra Bowed Ankle Jean // Pistola sent over these jeans (I also have them in the brown color). They check all the boxes - high rise, petite-friendly inseam, relaxed fit. I took my true size, 25.

Two months into summer (with another month to go) and I have to say, I’m ready for my routine again. I love summer and I love spending time with my kids, but I struggle with having one foot in my business while the other is trying to be a SAHM. The constant interruptions while trying to work don’t help the creative process either. How are my fellow moms holding up this summer?

For now, I wanted to check back in with a roundup of my outfits from July. I’m working with my July Capsule Wardrobe which you can find here. Despite it being almost June, the weather in Chicago was up and down all week with temperatures from the high 50s to the low 80s. Monday started out warm and also with my favorite look of the week. This dark brown button down shirt from Alex Mill is made with a lightweight cotton poplin and works well for hot weather. I’ve paired it here with some cotton twill shorts from Sézane (I also now own these in the Terracotta, love the fit!) and my favorite leopard print flats from Sézane as well.

TUESDAY

I was craving something comfy on Tuesday so I reached for my trusty sweatpants (such a good purchase!) and a simple tank. It felt a little too casual so I added a striped shirt tied at the waist.

WEDNESDAY

Temps were inching back down again - I was a little cold in this outfit! I’m wearing a cotton cardigan from Alex Mill (it’s a set with the pants from Tuesday), a linen midi skirt from Quince, and my Amazon jellies.

THURSDAY

And it’s cold again, lol. I needed a sweater and a jacket and long pants for this day. Perhaps it’ll be the last day chilly day? We’ll see.

FRIDAY

Same jeans from the day before but this time styled with my striped tee and suede jacket. We had a normal day of school/work from home and then ended the night with our usual pizza and a movie. Always the best night of the week for me!

SATURDAY

I only managed to capture one outfit from the long weekend which was a combination of my cotton cardigan, denim shorts, and gold sandals. I wore my hat because my hair was a mess, and I don’t think I put on a stitch of makeup all weekend.

We went to the farmer’s market, grilled out several times, and attempted a trip to the public pool but gave up after seeing a line of 100 people out the door. Hope you had a wonderful weekend.

Hey, hey! What a whirlwind May has been. I can’t believe we are almost to summer break. I’m ready to slow down for the next couple months and spend time with my kids who are growing up way too fast. Next year we will have a 3rd and 5th grader. How?! I’m such a sap!

In other exciting news, we leave for Paris right after school ends (like literally on the same day). I have a loose itinerary put together with bakeries, sights to see, and a few reservations booked. I’ve also been thinking about what I’m going to wear for an embarrassingly long time because I’m a weirdo. Next week, I’ll be sharing my packing list, and after our trip, I’ll be sure to share our itinerary. We are taking our kids who have been asking to go to Paris for years and years.

Over the last month, we’ve been busy with school activities and sports. Danny and I snuck away for a day date one day which, for us, always starts with a bakery. Afterwards, we visited the Art Institute of Chicago for the first time, and I was surprised how many famous works they head in their collection. I definitely recommend it if you have a trip to Chicago planned.

We also had our first visitors of the summer last weekend and have been trying to get our house in order. We bought a new bed and nightstands for the guest room (now on sale) and have been hanging some art on the walls. Our home is slowly coming together.

We have very little plans for Memorial Day weekend except for shopping for a new oven since ours is cooked (see what I did there?) There will definitely be some grilling on the agenda as well.

I just finished two historical fiction novels which were both quite enjoyable. I Was Anastasia was an incredibly fascinating read about Anastasia Romanov although the timeline is a bit confusing to follow. I also read The Paris Express which was based on a true story and follows actual people who lived at the time.

I just ordered this pretty linen dress in navy for our trip to Paris.

If you’re looking for things to do with your kids this summer, may I suggest these reusable water balloons? Hours and hours of outdoor entertainment.

Easing into the week with a comfy look. I swear - you can pretty much wear anything with these leopard flats and look chic. They truly are outfit makers. Another tip - a sweatshirt and sweatpants can feel super casual, but if you swap the sweatshirt for a sweater, it’s an easy upgrade.

TUESDAY

Recreating my ‘90s mom looks with this outfit for another work from home Tuesday. I get asked a lot but, yes, this is my job. There is more behind the scenes than you’d think. But I love it.

WEDNESDAY

I threw this look on after hanging out in my workout clothes all day. It worked for a chilly walk to pick up my kids from school.

THURSDAY

I love this time of year when we can wear shorts with long sleeves and pants with tank tops. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s a short period of time when this outfit works weather wise, but it’s just my favorite.

FRIDAY

This is basically a tee and sweatshirt but elevated with a cool jacket and chic sandals. Peep my new claw clip from Machete in the pick below, a hair accessories brand out of France. It was gifted, but I’ve already worn it a few times on days when my curly hair is just not working as an alternative to my usual bun. It actually makes my hair look styled instead of sloppy. SATURDAY

On Saturday, we had the usual soccer game but made a little more exciting by having the grandparents in town. I wore my gray cardigan over a white tank with my striped boxer shorts and jelly flats.

SUNDAY

Sunday was spent doing some activities in the city including a trip to Chinatown for dumplings - yum! I wore this very basic fit of a black tee and denim shorts with my leopard flats (again!)

I can’t get over the look and feel of these sweatpant-esque pants from Alex Mill. They are so comfortable yet easy to dress up a little with a nicer top and shoes. Petite-friendly, too!

DAY TWO

This was a Saturday outfit for a sunny yet chilly day spent doing activities with my kids. We went to my son’s soccer game, and then I took my daughter to paint ceramics at a local shop.

DAY FOUR

We are skipping Sunday (I don’t generally put together a ‘fit’ for Sundays since I typically spend the day cleaning/meal planning/grocery shopping.) I loved Monday’s look which felt casual and cool with the lighter color palette and the jelly flats which I’ve already worn several times.

DAY FIVE

This was gloomy day with highs in the 50s but luckily no rain so I was able to wear my suede jacket. I paired it with a black tee, jeans, and leopard flats.

DAY SIX

So far this capsule has been one of my favorites, and it’s mostly due to these pants and these jellies. To make this feel like more of a fit, I tied a sweater around my waist. Also note the new sling bag from Abby Alley which is still in stock in this recently rereleased Oyster color. I adore this bag.

DAY SEVEN

Look - bare toes! It might be time for a professional pedicure, though, don’t look too close. I’m slowly sneaking in my warm weather pieces even on days it might be a little chilly. If the rest of my body is covered than I’m fine with my toes being out, ha! I wore this cotton cardigan again - this time with white jeans, an anorak jacket, and gold sandals.

DAY EIGHT

I’ve been waiting for a good weather day to wear this outfit. This look with a cotton sweater and striped boxer shorts is chic but easy. I’m obsessed (insert influencer voice here) with my new Keds especially with shorts. Someone mentioned they bought a pair after rewatching Dirty Dancing, and I had totally forgotten about the Keds in that movie! I’m so here for it.

DAY NINE

Another look for sideline Saturday and my first time wearing these denim shorts out and about. Prepare to get sick of these!

Monday was a work from home day, but I did pop out to do a quick errand. You’ll see that my style doesn’t really change much whether I’m spending the day with me kids, working from home, or running around town - my outfits typically work for all scenarios in my current life!

This look was simple, but I love how the black sweater and brown denim pair back to the leopard print shoes. These shoes are new, and I already know I’m going to wear them a ton.

I had a doctor’s appointment in the city so I took the train in and walked the Riverwalk to the doctor’s office. I’ve been waiting for the right weather to pair this red tee with denim on denim - a cool combo in my opinion!

We had some warm weather this week, and I was finally able to pull out my white skirt. I paired it with an ivory cashmere sweater and my new red mesh flats. These flats are different but add a little edge to my more classic style.

Brown Button Down Shirt + Light Wash Denim + Red Flats

This was Friday’s look when I wanted something easy and comfortable for a day at home and then to my son’s soccer practice. This is my chocolate brown Alex Mill button down shirt (it has a relaxed fit), my new rigid denim from Quince, and those red flats again.

Black Tank + Suede Jacket + Black Denim + Leopard Flats

I wore this look on Saturday to meet some friends at a brewery in the city. This suede jacket is basically an outfit maker so the look didn’t need much else, but I couldn’t resist adding these leopard flats. Note that technically this black tank isn’t in my capsule, but I can’t find my black tee at the moment (going to search for it this week!)

Hello!

It’s been a minute since I posted one of these (I’m trying a new format - let me know what you think!) First things first - let’s catch up.

Last week was spring break, and while we didn’t have any big trip planned, we certainly made the most of it. We spent the first part bopping around the city (the zoo! the movies! the museum! the beach!) and then road tripped to Kansas City for the second half to celebrate Easter with our families.

Spring sports started back up for us this week which means the evenings and weekends will be busier, but I’m so freakin’ happy to be spending more time outside these days (I’m a different person when the weather is warmer, I swear.)

If you’re looking for an easy and healthy weeknight recipe, I recently made this Maple Mustard Sheet Pan Salmon, and it hit the spot after an indulgent week of travel.

Monday was my birthday so I took a break from my capsule wardrobe to wear a couple new pieces I was sent from Evereve. The real star are these jeans from Pistola which are high waisted (with some stretch) and have no front pockets which gives them 70s vibes (my favorite decade for fashion!)

Tuesday’s look was super simple but the accessories (necklace, belt, bag) help to add interest. This is pretty much my winter uniform.

I went monochrome for this look with a brown button down, white jeans, brown loafers, and a brown coat. This button down is a favorite of mine, and I own it in many colors. I include one in almost every capsule wardrobe!

As you can see, my mind has fully transitioned to spring (so much for waiting until March, oops!). If you’re still in winter mode, go ahead and save this post for later, okay?

I keep an ongoing wishlist in my Notion app - basically a running list of things I spot that might fill a gap in my wardrobe. I add to it as I go, then circle back every so often to edit it down (because some things look shiny at first… and then totally lose their luster). It’s honestly one of the best ways I’ve found to keep impulse purchases in check.

For this post, I’m pulling ten items from my spring wishlist. I won’t be buying all of them, but I will be using this as my guide for a little spring shopping over the next couple of months. You’ll see I definitely have a color palette in mind - brown, green, and black are all here. And yes, there’s a lot of denim…but to be fair, I wear denim almost every single day.

Let’s get it into the list…

1/ Leopard Print Flats

I actually own these flats in the python print, but I’ve been eyeing the leopard version. The python ones are much more subtle, and I think leopard will make more of a statement. And you know I always recommend footwear with a little personality.

2/ Green Barrel Jeans

I saw these green barrel jeans from La Ligne and haven’t been able to stop thinking about them. My only hesitation: there aren’t measurements listed for rise and inseam on their site, and those numbers can make all the difference.

3/ Black Tailored Shorts

These tailored shorts from Na Nin are the best. I own them in cream and got a ton of wear out of them last spring and summer so I’m eyeing the black as well. They’re made from raw silk and have that slightly nubby texture that gives a lived-in, effortless vibe. (I do recommend sizing up.)

4/ Full Length Denim

But not just any pair - this exact pair from Reformation. Everyone I see wearing them looks like they have the longest legs ever, and as a short-legged girlie…I need some assistance. From what I’ve heard, they run really long, but Reformation does free hemming.

5/ Suede Tote Bag

I love my big suede bag from Gap, but it’s super slouchy and feels a little awkward when I’m carrying my laptop. I’ve been on the hunt for a more structured suede tote and found this one from Madewell. It’s fairly affordable as far as bags go, and I love this cognac color too which is weirdly missing from my closet.

6/ Cropped Vest

I’m looking to add to my vest collection (yes, I’ve got two on this list). I don’t have a cropped version like this, and I think it would look so good with high-waisted barrel jeans. This one is from Sézane, so you just know the quality and fit will be top notch.

7/ Brown Suede Flats

I’m obsessed with these. I love the dark brown suede, I love that they’re backless. I’ve decided I need more backless shoes in my life. I will buy these!

8/ Green Vest

A few of my Insta friends have this vest in yellow, and when I saw it came in green, I was smitten. I’d wear it over tees as a third piece to add some personality to my outfits.

9/ Green Tee

I own this tee in the “natural” colorway and I get questions about it every time I wear it. It’s raw silk with that nubby texture - very laid-back California vibes. It’s also slightly cropped, but not too cropped. I definitely want to add another color for spring/summer…I just can’t decide between this green or the brown.

Note: I sized up to a small.

10/ Brown Barrel Jeans

I’ve been seeing these COH Miro jeans around and they look so cool. As you can see, I’m still going strong on my brown obsession, and I think these would be such a good addition to my denim lineup. I already have lots of styling ideas for these.

Fake spring graced us with her presence the first four days of the week, and, holy bananas, it was the best. I didn’t even need a coat or a jacket some days. On Monday, I was in this look for the morning, and then changed into some more technical clothes for a walk through a wooded trail near our home (our kids didn’t have school).

TUESDAY

Tuesday it was back to business as usual, and I wore this look with a gray sweater and camel blazer. I loved the color combination. I’m also wearing some black jeans and suede loafers.

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday was the warmest day of the week (we hit the 60s) so a springesque outfit was in order. I did have to wear my sweater when I went outside to pick up my kids from school but that was mostly due to the wind.

THURSDAY

This outfit is simple - just a cardigan, jeans, and boots, but I think the barrel style of these jeans makes this outfit a little bit extra. I also added some texture with this woven leather bag from Madewell which was just restocked.

FRIDAY

Another jeans and sweater look but this time with my ivory cotton sweater and tan wide leg jeans. I added some black accessories with my belt and boots but grabbed my brown suede bag to mix it up.

SATURDAY

By Saturday, we were officially back to winter and puffer coats. It was nice while it lasted, I guess.

This is the time of the month where I start thinking about the pieces I want to switch out for my next monthly capsule. March is a difficult one with that ‘in like a lion, out like a lamb’ thing. I’m sure it will be a little of winter and a little of spring so I’ll need a range of outerwear and footwear options. I’ll be posting my capsule Tuesday, March 2nd, on the blog.

I was recently looking back at outfits from last spring (one of my all-time favorite capsule wardrobes) and I was struck by how much I loved every single look. They were simple, easy to put together, and stylish without feeling overly trendy…and most of them started with (you guessed it) a t-shirt and jeans.

Now that we’re heading into the warm months (hallelujah!), I wanted to highlight this simple outfit formula. In this post, I’m sharing a ton of ways to take this easy base and elevate it to fit your style and your life.

For the sake of versatility, I’m styling everything with a pair of relaxed-fit, straight-leg jeans which, for me, are my most-worn jeans and (in my opinion) the easiest to style with all kinds of shoes.

As far as plain white tees go, I own and recommend this one from Everlane, this one from Sézane, and this one from Madewell.

A plain tee and jeans can easily be elevated with some accessories. For a simple look, I gravitate towards bolder accessories - chunkier jewelry, textured bags, big sunglasses. Add one or a few depending on your comfort level/vibes for the day.

One lesson I learned farther into my style journey is the power of an interesting shoe. Sure, classics are nice, but if you want to show some personality or creativity, your footwear is a great place to do it, especially when your base outfit is well, basic.

Adding an additional layer on top of your tee will make the biggest impact for your overall look. If the weather allows, I usually always add some kind of jacket or shirt over my tee.

Switching out your blue jeans for denim in a different color is another variation of this uniform. Since I wear denim almost everyday of the week, I like having options! These are some denim washes I recommend - the green pair is on my wishlist.

Changing up the color of your tee can change up the whole vibe - a black tee looks more edgy, a gray tee more laid back, and a striped tee more chic. Even substituting a beige tee for a white tee brings more softness to your look.

Tees come in so many different styles, and I’m on a mission to try them all, ha! Changing up the style of your tee can shift your outfit vibes or bring balance. An oversized tee goes well with more fitted denim, a baby tee balances out a wide leg or baggy silhouette, and a linen tee is lighter and more summery.

These same concepts also apply to styling a tank top or long sleeve tee. I typically just switch those out depending on the current weather.

If there’s one outfit formula worth repeating, it’s a great white tee and jeans because it always works, no matter the season or occasion.

Denim on denim for Monday’s look. You could swap this patchwork denim shirt for whatever denim shirt you have. Another variation you could try is layering with a turtleneck underneath instead of wearing a sweater over the shoulders. There are so many ways to style this!

TUESDAY

I took my own style advice and tried to play with the buttons on this cardigan as a new way to wear it. I liked how this look came out! Along with the white tee and cardigan, I’m also wearing my black jeans and white loafers. I added a brown croc embossed belt and a brown suede bag for some texture.

WEDNESDAY

This was a simple and easy look with a gray sweater, white jeans, and brown boots. I just added some of my go-to statement accessories to make it more interesting (pendant necklace, big slouchy bag, and a brown belt.) Note the kitty in the background - apparently this is the sunniest spot in the house.

THURSDAY

Not me moving my mirror around my house to find the best lighting, ha! To work from home, I wore this easy cotton button down, relaxed fit jeans, and comfy loafers. I played around with styling this gray sweater and liked it best tied at the waist.

FRIDAY

I loved Friday’s look. Anytime I can wear a tee and jeans as my base, I’m a happy camper. This look included my long sleeve black tee, brown wool coat, light wash denim, black boots, and a gray sweater over the shoulder. This is one of my uniforms - I just switch up the outerwear for the weather!

SATURDAY

A casual Saturday fit with no makeup and no socks (hurrah for fake spring!) I’m wearing an ivory cotton sweater, black jeans, and suede loafers. We took the dog to the park, made a cake (lemon raspberry!), and watched the Olympics. A nice little Saturday.

SUNDAY

A rare Sunday outfit! Usually, I’m in loungewear all day, but we went to the park for a playdate so I made myself somewhat presentable in jeans and a hoodie. Note that these sneakers are not in my capsule wardrobe, but we’ve had a heat wave and, along with warm temps, the ground has been muuushy from snow melt. I needed a light shoe that I could easily clean.

Anyone else feel like a different person now that the weather has been nice? Oh my, it’s like coming out of a fog. It also has me dreaming of spring outfits. I can’t wait to wear jackets again. And ballet flats! And t-shirts! Okay, I’ll stop now.

After writing about how I improved my shopping habits, I wanted to go deeper on denim. I’ve tried a lot of brands over the years, and I’ve learned what matters: the fits that flatter my body, which brands are worth the price, and which silhouettes actually work in my capsule closet. I’m going to break down what I know so you can find your perfect jeans, too.

Finding your perfect fit can feel like Everest. I’m petite with very short legs, so I’ve been there. You might be curvy, tall, short-waisted, postpartum - there are infinite bodies and no single brand serves them all. Knowing your preferences and your measurements helps narrow it down.

Know these three: your rise range, inseam range, and current waist measurement.

Rise (where the waistband sits)

Rise is the distance from crotch seam to the top of the waistband. Trends come and go, but I recommend sticking with what suits you best.

• High rise (≈11”+): Usually hits near the natural waist and can visually lengthen legs - great for petites or anyone who wants to create the illusion of longer legs. Note: rigid (no-stretch) fabric combined with a very high rise can be terribly uncomfortable so tread carefully and size up if needed.

• Mid rise (≈9.5”–11”): Often sits around the belly button. Generally the easiest, most wearable rise. This is the rise I’ve been reaching for lately even though high rise is technically more “flattering” on me given my petite stature.

• Low rise (<9.5”): Sits below the belly button toward the hips. These work mostly for the long-legged or short-waisted (it visually lengthens the torso). Personally, I’ll never be a low-rise girl, and that’s okay.

• Low-slung vs. low-rise: Not the same! Low-slung jeans are designed to sit lower on the hips with a dropped crotch and relaxed seat; low-rise only describes the short rise and can still be more fitted through the crotch and seat. Labels aren’t always precise - confusing, I know.

Inseam (where the hem hits)

Inseam is the length from crotch to hem. This is where so many purchases go wrong. If you’re outside the “average,” plan on seeking specific inseams or budgeting for a trip to the tailor. Note that, in general, the inseam does not change with waist size.

Most closets benefit from 2–3 inseams:

• a cropped pair (ankle to top-of-foot, depending on shoe),

• a true full-length pair (grazes the floor or skims the top of the shoe),

• and possibly a full-length with heels pair.

Petite & Tall notes

• Petite/Short: Many brands cut petite for ~5’4” and under, but it varies. “Short” often means only a shorter inseam; “Petite” can also mean a shorter rise as well. Read the product details - sometimes a petite rise is too short for me, so I’ll buy regular and hem.

• Tall/Long: “Long” typically refers to a longer inseam only; “Tall” often adjusts rise and knee placement too. If you’re ~5’8”+, you’ll find tall or long sizing may fit you better.

Waist (use the number as a guide)

Between vanity sizing and fabric stretch, a tagged “26” rarely equals a 26” waist (those days are long gone). Know your actual measurement for reference, but expect to vary by brand and fabric. Decide upfront if you want a relaxed or close fit and size accordingly. Going up one or two sizes for drape or comfort is not only okay - it’s often the point. Be aware that different washes can fit differently even in the same style from the same brand due to the denim washing process. In general, darker washes fit tighter and lighter washes fit looser.

Plus & Curvy fits (not the same)

• Plus size is (hopefully) a completely different pattern than regular denim (not just a bigger waist). They often have more room through the hip/thigh and sometimes a higher rise. Good places to look: Madewell, Universal Standard, Pilcro via Anthropologie, and extended sizes/Curvy at Abercrombie & Fitch.

• Curvy is about ratio - more room in hip/thigh with a smaller waist to reduce gaping. If you’re curvy, you can often take the size that fits your waist without sizing up for hips. These can be regular sizing from 0 and up, not necessarily plus.

• Rigid denim (100% cotton): Holds shape and gives structure. Usually will relax over time with wear. If you love rigid but also want comfort, try a mid-rise and/or size up for a relaxed fit. I typically prefer rigid denim as a personal preference.

• Stretch blends: Cotton with elastane/spandex adds comfort and ease. The tradeoff is potential bagging out or loss of their shape more easily. If you prioritize comfort, these may be for you.

Denim trends are all over the place right now - skinny to straight, barrel, wide, flare, bootcut. These are the four I find the most versatile.

1. Cigarette (skinny but modern): Slim through hip and thigh, then a gentle taper at the ankle (not vacuum-sealed like the skinnies of year’s past). I like these slightly cropped to avoid bunching at the ankles.

2. Straight: The unicorn jean. Works with loafers, ballet flats, boots and pretty much everything. Straights vary from slim-straight to wider straight; I keep a couple washes and leg openings in rotation. These are by far my most worn style.

3. Barrel: Curved outer seam for a subtle (or not-so-subtle) balloon effect. They feel fresh and modern and can change up your proportions. I avoid pairing with super chunky footwear so the bottom half doesn’t feel too heavy.

4. Wide leg: Either cropped or full length (the current trends skew longer but you do you). I love these with barely-there shoes like ballet flats, flip-flops or a sleek ankle boot.

Nothing here is over ~$350. You shouldn’t have to spend more than that to get great denim.

FRAME (~$300)

Runs TTS, excellent quality and fit.

• The Mellow: Mid-rise straight with stretch; short inseam that’s great for petites.

• The Stroll: High-rise, relaxed, full-length rigid. A recent purchase that needs a trip to the tailor. I hem rather than raw-cut when I want to keep them full length.

• The Refined Jean: ‘70s vibe with patch pockets; full length, high rise. Feels a touch small so take your larger size. They are long on me, but I wear them with heels and skipped hemming.

Citizens of Humanity (~$250)

Soft, drapey non-stretch that still feels structured. I have this pair. I sized down two for a higher waist; take TTS or down one for a lower slouch. Other popular styles: Annina (high-rise, full-length, relaxed) and Miro (slight barrel).

AGOLDE (~$250)

My first pair of “designer” denim, and the pair that opened my eyes to what you can get if you’re willing to pay for it (better fit, longer wear). I find these run slightly big; I took my smaller size.

• 90s Pinch Waist: High-rise straight, rigid denim

• 90s Mid-Rise: Similar, just with a lower rise and more relaxed fit (I have light wash + black)

• Also loved by many: Ren (high-rise wide-leg) and Valen (mid-rise straight).

Pistola (~$200)

This brand is relatively new to me, and so far, I’m impressed.

• Lexi: Mid-rise straight, relaxed, included them in my February capsule.

• Kyra High-Rise: Wide-leg with a slightly shorter inseam than Lexi. As a petite, both read full length on me.

Everlane (~$150)

I’ve worn their denim for ~10 years. Prices have crept up, but I appreciate their supplier transparency and the range of inseam options. My top picks:

• Way-High Jean: High-rise straight.

• ’90s Forever: High-rise, full length, relaxed.

• Way-High Curve: High-rise, barrel.

• Way High Sailor Jean: High-rise, wide leg, I have the 29.5” inseam for full length

Everlane can run snugger in darker rigid washes - consider your larger size. Quick shoutout to their A-Line Denim Short which are by far my favorite jean shorts.

Madewell (~$150)

The Perfect Vintage era had me in a chokehold for several years, and they still deliver, especially for Petite/Tall/Plus. They often have sales, too. In general, Madewell runs large, but the Balloon Jean (pictured here) runs small.

• Balloon Jean: In my January/February capsules. Slight barrel leg that isn’t too wide (good pair to ease in to barrel leg). Size up.

• Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg: High-rise wide without going too wide.

• Dean Easy: Relaxed, mid-rise, straight, a best-seller for Madewell.

Levi’s (~$100)

My budget pick for rigid denim. I have a full post on favorites, but my top picks are:

• 501 Original: High-rise, slim straight.

• 501 ’90s: Mid-rise, relaxed straight.

• Ribcage: Very high-rise, wide-straight.

Tip: Levi’s “Ankle” versions are often the best petite-friendly inseams and live on separate product pages from the originals. They often go on sale; don’t purchase at full price.

Quince ($50)

Primarily stretch blends (cotton with elastane/spandex; some styles include recycled polyester or TENCEL™/lyocell, too). I take my larger size because I dislike a tight stretch feel (I’ve been traumatized by my jeggings era.) Many styles offer 2–3 inseams. The two pairs I own:

• The Bella Stretch Patch Pocket Wide-Leg: high rise, wide-straight, stretch denim.

• The Curvy Bella Stretch Relaxed Straight: high rise, relaxed, straight, stretch denim.

This ivory cotton sweater from Gap is new so, of course, I had to wear it right away (and again later in the week as well.) The color pairs perfectly with the darker washes of denim in my capsule wardrobe. I added these new suede loafers from Bared Footwear that are the perfect shade of tan (*pr product).

TUESDAY

If your closet is feeling a little stale, I highly recommend adding a new accessory. It instantly injects some creativity and variety. This bandana was a new purchase for my February capsule, and I plan to wear it well into spring and summer. This outfit does feel a little springlike (I definitely wore a coat over this, FYI), but it worked for a more mild winter day.

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday I did some layering with a brown button down shirt and my ivory sweater. I rolled the sleeves of my sweater so you could see the cuffs of the button down, and I liked how this look turned out. I’m also wearing some indigo barrel jeans and brown suede boots.

THURSDAY

Thursday’s look was very simple, but, it turns out, I like simple. I wore a white tee underneath my sweater for warmth and dimension and added a pendant necklace.

FRIDAY

Friday I decided to pop out of the house in the morning to work at the coffee shop. Working from home does not exactly inspire me creatively, but changing my surroundings even if it’s just for an hour does wonders. I wore my winter uniform again - a white tee over a sweater with jeans and boots. If it ain’t broke and all that.

SATURDAY

Saturday we headed out to do some errands - picking up a birthday gift and haircuts for the kids. I wanted something comfortable and easy so I put on a black sweater, relaxed fit jeans, and shearling lined boots. I played around with the accessories for a few minutes and landed on this bandana and belt combo. I love the combination of black and olive green. I added this coat as well.

Saturday evening, we snuck away for a belated birthday date for Danny. We went out to dinner at a Mediterranean spot in Lincoln Park (the food was delicious but the service was wild - a fight almost broke out between the staff so I’ll have to withhold my recommendation, yikes!) Afterward, we went to The Second City for some laughs which I will happily recommend especially for a winter date. So funny! I wore this leopard print dress from Rouje which was gifted to me last month. The ruching on the bodice makes for a very flattering fit, and leopard is one of the few prints I like wearing. I took a size up which I typically do for European brands. For the rest of the look, I added a flowy blazer over top (similar from same brand) and my knee high boots (it’s too cold for sockless feet!)

So far I’m very into my February capsule wardrobe - the colors, the simplicity, and the new accessories feel very me. I’m trying to stay focused on winter dressing, but I sense spring creeping into my thoughts. I’ll try to hold out till March for spring related content, but I can’t promise anything. The mind wants what it wants!

WHAT I’M WATCHING

I’m curious to see what everyone thinks of the new season of Bridgerton? I’m in to it so far although things are progressing quite slowly. One things for sure, I’m never going to think of the word pinnacle the same ever again, lol.

I’m also watching the new season of Alone on Netflix which seems a bit out of character for me, but honestly it’s highly addictive. Danny puts it on, and I’m immediately sucked in. It’s fascinating to me as someone who wouldn’t last one hour alone in the wilderness.

WHAT I’M READING

Heart The Lover by Lily King // This novel was a tragic love story. I enjoyed it, but dare I say, it was a bit pretentious. I didn’t get many of the references - I don’t know, could be a me thing, ha.

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid // This is what I’m currently reading so no review yet, but from what I’ve seen online and from having read her previous books, I expect good things.

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO

I recently discovered the joy of audiobooks to get me through my chores, and I managed to plow through three novels by Katherine Center during the last month this way. My favorite was probably The Rom-commers followed by The Bodyguard, and then The Love Haters. These all follow a very predictable plot, but there’s comfort in the familiarity. If you like romcoms without the spice, these are perfect.

WHAT I’M COOKING

I snagged this cookbook from Substack favorite Jenn Lueke, and it’s chockfull of easy and healthy recipe ideas. Pictured above is the Lasagna Skillet, Creamy Mushroom and Wild Rice Soup, and the Lemony Chicken and Rice.

HOME WORKOUT UPGRADE

As much as I love going to workout classes, they take up so much time. Fellow parents know - there is only so much time in one day to fit in a workout. Danny and I decided to invest in a Peloton Tread to make home workouts a little more motivating. My thoughts so far…I LOVE it. I’ve been doing three runs a week plus some of the strength classes, and the workouts fly by.

NEW ACCESSORIES

I got a little case of the shoppies when I was putting together my February capsule, and I purchased a few new accessories. First up, this bandana from Natalie Borton Designs which is the perfect green. I also grabbed a second pendant necklace from Heaven Mayhem (picture on right), two belts from J.Crew (this one in both black and brown - love the croc texture!) and two pairs of sunglasses from Quince - shop them here and here (pictured on right).

Here are the little tricks I use to elevate everyday basics. These eleven things are quick, easy, and surprisingly impactful.

Tip #1: Add a belt.

Belts took a back seat in the 2010s, but they’re back in a big way. No matter your style, a belt is an easy upgrade that adds structure and a focal point. I especially love a belt with tonal outfits, it breaks up the look just enough. If you’re shopping, I just purchased this belt in black and brown.

Tip #2: Play around with your buttons.

On casual days, I’ll leave a couple buttons undone at the top and the bottom of a button-up for movement and ease - it instantly softens the vibe. On days I want polish, I’ll button all the way up to the neckline for a clean, structured feel. Experiment and see what feels best with the day’s silhouette.

Tip #3: Style your hair.

This isn’t technically part of the outfit, but it is a part of your overall look and completely shifts the vibe. If your look is slouchy or you’re wearing a collared piece, try a sleek bun or low pony for balance. If your outfit feels a touch stiff or dressy, wear your hair down and more messy and undone.

Tip #4: Add some accessories.

When an outfit feels a little too simple, add one or two finishing touches: chunky earrings, a pendant necklace, a silk scarf or bandana, or a great hat. These small pieces do so much heavy lifting for very little effort. A bag does this as well, but you’re not going to be holding it all day.

Tip #5: Play with the hem of your jeans.

If a look feels “off,” it’s often the jeans–shoe combo. Cuffing is your friend, and yes, baby cuffs are having a moment. I’ll do one or two small folds so the hem grazes the top of the shoe without bunching. It creates intention, and it’s a great styling trick for petites.

Tip #6: Play with your tuck.

There’s no hard-and-fast rule (is there? maybe, there could be - I’m not that dialed in). Full tuck for more structure, front tuck for ease and to define your waist, half tuck for asymmetry/interest, and untucked for comfort or more of an undone look. Try each and pick the one that balances your proportions with that specific bottom.

#7: Try adding another layer.

Layering is instant dimension. I love a tee (white or otherwise) peeking out under a sweater for a hint of contrast. A button-down or turtleneck layered under a crewneck also reads thoughtful without feeling fussy.

Tip #8: Wear something oversized or relaxed.

Make sure at least one piece is intentionally oversized or just has a more relaxed fit - a big coat, slouchy knit, relaxed denim, or a boxy blazer. Head-to-toe slim can fall flat; mixing volumes feels modern.

Tip #9: Change your shoes.

Alison Bornstein’s “Wrong Shoe Theory” is such a great styling hack. I’ll pull two or three pairs and try them on - even the not-obvious ones. For me, “wrong” isn’t too wild and often means ballet flats with a blazer, or loafers with a sweatshirt. A statement shoe or a rich texture (suede! croc!) can also shift the whole look.

Tip #10: Add sunglasses.

Indoors, no, but the second you head out, a great pair of sunnies adds instant cool. Choose a shape that flatters your features.

PS: I get most of mine from Quince - good quality at a reasonable price so I don’t have to be precious with them.

Tip #11: Tie a sweater over your shoulders or around the waist.

This is a trick I’ve been using a ton lately to add interest. Whether it's a knit over a blazer, coat, or button‑down (or even over another knit) it adds that much‑needed dimension. It might take a minute to get used to, but once you try it a couple of times, you’ll love it. Trust.

If you struggle with this, try making a checklist of these you can easily reference when you’re getting dressed. Once you start, they’ll become second nature.
