Henry Fieldson wasn’t short of offers after leaving Queen’s Park in the summer.

The defender, who came through at Sunderland, had options in Scotland and England, but was immediately convinced that a move to St Mirren was a no-brainer.

Fieldson was initially earmarked as a possible back-up to first-choice left-back Declan John but was quickly thrust into action due to an injury to the Welshman.

Craig McLeish has urged St Mirren to go into their early-season top-of-the-table clash against Celtic full of belief and confidence.

The Buddies host Martin O’Neill’s side in front of the TV cameras in a late kick-off on Saturday night, with top spot in the league on the line.

After three wins and a draw in their opening four matches, St Mirren have so far been the surprise package of the Scottish Premiership.

However, McLeish is certain his side is capable of more as he revealed he has been left more frustrated by league results in certain instances than the 5-1 loss to Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup.

Fraser Taylor has admitted there was a moment when he thought his time at St Mirren was coming to an end.

The 23-year-old netted his first goal for the Paisley club, after rising through the academy ranks, to end a 13-year wait for a league win over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

However, the midfielder’s contract had expired in the summer, and Taylor was considering his next move before Craig McLeish dealt him in again following a loan spell at Partick Thistle.

“There was a period where I thought it was time to move on,” admitted Taylor.

“I was 23, and I didn’t know if there would need to be a compensation fee or anything.

“I was thinking I maybe needed to go away and make a career for myself and be around a first team.

Craig McLeish is anticipating a quiet transfer deadline day at St Mirren.

At present, the Paisley club look unlikely to add to their 12 signings over the summer, with the club “relaxed” over speculation surrounding Killian Phillips.

Aberdeen had bids rejected for the Irishman, with Stephen Robinson keen on a reunion at Pittodrie, with interest from the US and Belgium not materialising in concrete bids as of yet.

McLeish has suggested the club and player are both at ease with the situation with the focus, currently, on when he can return to action rather than a last-minute departure.

It has been 13 long years since St Mirren last tasted a league victory against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

But Fraser Taylor ended the Ayrshire hex, scoring the only goal to see St Mirren stay second in the Scottish Premiership with three wins and a draw in four outings.

The Buddies raced into the lead after just four minutes as Declan John crossed to Chris Mochrie who fed Nikolas Agrafiotis to lay back for Taylor to send into the bottom corner.

It was liquid football in all senses as St Mirren continually sliced through Kilmarnock to match a deluge of rainwater dropping onto the pitch.

It was nearly two when Calvin Ramsay saw a low drive deflected onto the post by Johnly Yfeko. Ismeal Kabia was then denied by Max Stryjek as he slid into challenge in the box with a free-kick eventually awarded to the home side.

Kabia then showed his ability in one-on-one scenarios as he burst beyond his marker to tee up Mochrie but Yfeko blocked again.

Kilmarnock rarely threatened throughout but a deflected pass almost gifted Djenairo Daniels a chance bar the offside flag, Jacob Chapman did well to turn over regardless.

But Daniels would have a massive opening 20 minutes from time as a long ball caught out Henry Fieldson as he wrangled with the striker who had a clear sight of goal after Chapman raced out of his box but the forward only hit the side netting.

Kilmarnock curse cured

Craig McLeish was 23 and playing for Montrose when St Mirren last won a league match at Rugby Park. Matchwinner Fraser Taylor was just 10 years old.

Aside from three penalty shoot-out wins, St Mirren have seriously struggled to win in Ayrshire.

Danny Lennon was the last manager to mastermind a win over Kilmarnock on their own turf, with John McGinn, Connor Newton and Paul McGowan on the scoresheet back in May 2013. Mo Yaqub, Jack Smith and Anton Brady came on, remember them?

The only connection between the two results; Mark O’Hara and Greg Kiltie playing for Kilmarnock.

There has been an inevitability about St Mirren going to Kilmarnock, where a draw would be viewed as a remarkable accomplishment.

To break the curse and win at Rugby Park felt significant.

This St Mirren side are surprising everyone week in, week out. They aren’t afraid or haunted by past struggles, they have an enduring belief and confidence every week.

Victory at Rugby Park alone isn’t enough to define a season, but ending a torrid run and keeping pace at the top of the table is certainly to be celebrated.

Midfield masterclass

Fraser Taylor, magnificent. Ryan Carr, unplayable. Ismeal Kabia, electric.

This was a night for talent mixed with raw grit and determination. It was never going to be a wholly glamorous affair.

But the aforementioned trio were tremendous, supported by every other starter and sub. There were absolutely no failures, only positives for the Paisley side.

This felt like a big night for Taylor. So often, he has threatened to stake a claim in the St Mirren first team but the moment has, through misfortune or otherwise, has passed him by. At Rugby Park, it was different.

So comfortable was Taylor all evening, before being withdrawn after 74 minutes, that he might as well have been playing in slippers with a cigar in his mouth.

The midfielder benefitted from the increased freedom as he played in a 10 role with lesser necessity to watch his back and more space to innovate.

Much of that can be put down to Ryan Carr, who is becoming a real fan favourite for his dirty work in midfield, partnered with genuine on-the-ball ability.

The midfielder repeatedly dropped between Alex Gogic and Henry Fieldson in defence and took on a quarter-back style role in the St Mirren side.

He was brave to drive out of defence and more than willing to play the direct ball when it was on. A superbly disciplined performance.

Kabia, meanwhile, was a constant thorn in the side of the Kilmarnock defence. He beat his marker at will throughout with his raw pace and direct running an absolute nightmare to contain.

The Arsenal loanee was buoyed by early touches and seemed to grow in confidence thorughout, a real positive sign for his future on loan in Scotland.

Identity theft

When these sides last met at Rugby Park, the hosts claimed a precious 4-3 victory in their Scottish Premiership revival.

On that night, Kilmarnock had a clear style and knew exactly how they were going to play to earn a result under Neil McCann. St Mirren, on the other hand, were scrambling for inspiration as Stephen Robinson’s time in charge came to an end.

Fast forward to the present day and it was role reversal. St Mirren know their identity clearly, with no room for misinterpretation or confusion under Craig McLeish.

Tactically, St Mirren were streets ahead with Kilmarnock only threatening in the closing stages as the match grew ragged with rain lashing down on the Rugby Park turf.

This St Mirren side don’t always get it right. There are some nervy moments, but there is always a clear and discernable approach to how they will play the game.

It’s bold, it’s brave and it’s exciting. That comes with risk, but this was one of the more complete performances under McLeish with the scoreline the only marginal statistic in Ayrshire.

Craig McLeish reckons the summer overhaul at St Mirren has offered a clear insight into what he wants his team to look like this season.

The Buddies boss has brought in 12 players in the off-season as he ripped up the playbook in Paisley to transition to a much more attacking, free-flowing and possession-based side.

So far, the results have been positive, a 5-1 loss to Ibrox the only defeat, with wins over St Johnstone and Falkirk and a draw with Motherwell seeing the club sit second in the Scottish Premiership, unbeaten in the league.

For McLeish, it was vital to bring in his own players as he continued to implement his new plan of action at St Mirren after glimpses of a fresh style last term.

“I think any manager, like me new into it or going into a new club, you want as many of your own players as you can,” he said.

“And you have an idea of the types of players you want and how you want to play.

“I think we’ve done a really good job of getting it to a place where we go: This is our group, this is what we want it to look like.

“I hope the fans can see that as well. Gavin Miller has been a huge part of that as well.”

Craig McLeish has addressed Killian Phillips’ absence from the St Mirren squad for the 3-3 draw against Motherwell.

The Buddies boss confirmed the midfielder is out injured and is expected to miss the next week or so, meaning he will remain sidelined against Kilmarnock and Celtic and possibly Rangers.

There remains transfer interest in the Irishman this summer after bids from Aberdeen were rejected by St Mirren, but McLeish has insisted no further official approaches have been made for Phillips by any club.

There is thought to be interest from MLS clubs and from Belgium in the midfielder this summer.

“I hope so. Nothing else official has come in,” said McLeish when asked is he expects Phillips to remain a St Mirren player after the transfer window closes.

St Mirren were somehow left disappointed to take only a point against Motherwell after battling back from the dead in a breathless first half.

Craig McLeish’s side were one down after two minutes when Alex Lowry played through Tawanda Maswanhise to round Jacob Chapman and knock home.

It could have been two after Alex Gogic handballed in remarkable fashion in his own box to gift Motherwell a penalty, but Chapman turned clear of goal.

The visitors would double their lead on 24 minutes. Regan Charles-Cook found the top corner from the edge of the box to seemingly end the contest.

But the Buddies would mount a stunning comeback to actually head into the break in front.

Paul Nsio slotted into the bottom corner after 39 minutes to give St Mirren some hope.

But they were then level one minute from the break as exquisite build-up led to Declan John charging clear and blasting into the net.

In stoppage time, St Mirren would take the lead with Sam Ramos in space in the box to divert into the top corner.

The half-time interval was welcomed by gasps as punters regained their breath following an unthinkable 45 minutes in Paisley, well worth the admission price.

The match was just as open after the break, too, with both sides having a number of chances to strike further.

Ismeal Kabia, Eseosa Sule and Jake Young all went close for St Mirren, with Seb Palmer-Houlden and Eythor Bjorgolfsson unlucky for the visitors.

In truth, it was a ding-dong contest until the very last. Seconds before the end Motherwell watched a deflected strike whistle past the post before Young danced past defenders but saw his strike saved by the legs of Alex Paulsen.

In the end, though, Motherwell would have the final say as they snatched a point, albeit having been in a position to take all three before their first-half collapse.

Chapman punched a ball clear but only as far as Jardell Kanga who lasered into the top corner to ensure the points were shared.

Awful opening

It was a truly dreadful start to proceedings for St Mirren in Paisley.

The echoes from the sound system welcoming Calvin Ramsay and Nikolas Agrafiotis had barely quietened before Jacob Chapman was picking the ball out of his net.

Just 100 seconds were on the clock when Tawanda Maswanhise surged clear to latch onto an Alex Lowry through ball and sneak past Chapman, who had committed himself far too early, before rolling into an empty net.

The most worrying thing was that St Mirren looked utterly bereft of ideas as to how to combat an electric Motherwell frontline as desperate footraces broke out regularly.

The last thing St Mirren needed would be an inexplicable bit of decision-making to gift a spot-kick to the visitors. Alex Gogic, though, suffered a bonkers moment as he leapt into the air in his own box, in acres of space, and controlled the ball with his right arm.

There was confusion over the VAR check and penalty award, but that was instantly replaced by bemusement at the sight of a replay showing a ridiculous decision from the stand-in St Mirren captain.

Fortunately, Chapman would prevent the scoreline from worsening with a second penalty save this season as he denied Maswanhise when he palmed clear low to his right.

St Mirren weren’t out of the woods yet though as they continued to gift possession away and struggle to take any ownership of the contest.

In truth, Maswanhise ought to have had a second after 20 minutes after Henry Fieldson, playing at centre-back, made a mess of controlling the ball to allow the striker to race clear but ultimately send his shot wide.

Four minutes later, St Mirren looked dead and buried as Regan Charles-Cook had an abundance of time on the edge of the box to curl expertly into the top corner.

Few inside the stadium would have expected anything other than a comfortable victory for Motherwell from then out.

Unbelievable comeback

St Mirren had other ideas, though.

In a remarkable ten-minute period, St Mirren not only battled back into the match, but took the lead. All the more impressive given the fashion in which the comeback was achieved.

Paul Nsio would spark the most unthinkable of recoveries with a terrific finish into the bottom corner. Sam Ramos played into Agrafiotis, who nudged off his marker and dummied the ball to allow Nsio to sprint onto it and dispatch low.

It was an unexpected, at that point, consolation which would give St Mirren something to take into the break.

But under Craig McLeish, this St Mirren side are capable of moments of scintillating quality in the build-up phase as they dismantled Motherwell to equalise after 44 minutes.

Declan John played into Nsio who shifted onto Chris Mochrie to play a defence-splitting pass for John to pick up as he charged clear and lashed past Alex Paulsen.

Four minutes were added to an already breathless first-half before things became even more ridiculous with a fifth goal.

A Ramsay free-kick was nodded on by Gogic for the unmarked Ramos to divert into the top corner. Wow.

Ahead of kick-off, the matchday mascot had left the crowd laughing with a 6-6 score prediction; suddenly it didn’t seem so implausible.

New boys start well

Nikolas Agrafiotis and Calvin Ramsay impressed in their first outings for St Mirren.

In Agrafiotis, St Mirren have a different profile at striker with the 26-year-old thrown straight into the starting line-up after signing a three-year deal from German third-tier side Wehen Wiesbaden.

Quickly, Agrafiotis showed he had something about him, albeit reduced to defensive duties for a spell in the opening period of the match.

The 6ft3 striker is more than simply a battering ram, though. He did use his physicality well, but he has a bag of tricks and is capable of some tremendous link-up play.

The signs were overwhelmingly positive for the player who drifted between spearheading the attack and rotating with his fellow forward players in Paisley.

He would be withdrawn as part of a triple change on the hour mark, alongside Ramsay and Mochrie, as he looked to suffer an injury issue in his left leg from play moments earlier.

Ramsay would start his loan spell from Liverpool on a solid footing, even if St Mirren were badly under pressure for the first half hour.

Capable defensively, Ramsay brought attacking impetus on the right and sent some inviting crosses into the box from deeper positions.

The loan signing was also immediately appointed to set-piece duties.

Louis Jackson, officially unveiled an hour before kick-off, made the bench in Paisley.

On the centre-back signed from Manchester United, McLeish said: “I knew him from the Scotland national team set-up as well.

“So he’s Scotland under-19s. He should, in our opinion, be in-and-around Scotland under-21 conversations. Because he’s still got another campaign at that level.

“If we can get him up and playing regularly here. He’s really good on the ball. Someone coming from Man Utd’s academy, you know that they’re going to be good on the ball.

“But the one thing with Louis as well is he wants to defend. That can be a bit of an issue sometimes with the defenders coming through at bigger clubs.

“Where they have it all their own way and they have a lot of the ball. They’re taught to play with the ball, but he wants to defend.

“He’s got a good physical profile about him. Really good boy.

“He’s at the stage of his career now where he’s just desperate to play. He’s desperate to play games. He wants a platform to play and showcase his abilities as well.

“And we can hopefully provide that for him.”

Killian Phillips absence

Killian Phillips was a notable absentee from the matchday squad against Motherwell.

The midfielder has attracted transfer interest this summer, with more expected before the window closes next week.

With Phillips, who has three goals in the league so far, out of action there was some resignation from supporters that he might be on his travels to seal a late transfer move.

St Mirren have rebuffed two bids from Aberdeen, with interest remaining in the playmaker from Belgium and the United States.

However, Phillips’ absence was not due to an impending transfer and instead the result of an injury, with the Irishman in Paisley on Sunday afternoon.

A club team news update stated Phillips, and captain Marcus Fraser, were both unavailable due to knocks.

Calvin Ramsay has returned to Scotland ready to silence his doubters.

The Liverpool full-back will spend the season on loan at St Mirren in a pivotal period for his career.

Out of contract next summer, Ramsay, 23, is determined to reintroduce himself with a standout loan spell.

Since leaving Aberdeen in a £4m deal, Ramsay has played just 30 first-team matches.

He has made a handful of appearances for Liverpool while also spending time on loan at Kilmarnock, Wigan, Bolton and Preston.

“I’ve no regrets. If I got offered that chance again, I’d take it again.

“There are not that many young players in Scotland who get that opportunity to go to Liverpool, Man United, one of these big clubs.

“It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world, so 100 per cent I’d do it again.

“When Trent was at the club, I spoke to him and got on well with him.

“He helped me and he’s done unbelievably well.

“I feel I’m a better player. When you’re in and around that team and have some of the best players in the world…I was learning from Trent, training with him every single day.

Craig McLeish has confirmed injury blows for Luke Douglas, Liam Donnelly and Malik Dijksteel.

The St Mirren boss will be without the trio for a significant period, with all three set for a spell on the sidelines.

Douglas was stretchered off after just eight minutes as St Mirren B claimed an impressive 5-2 victory over East Fife in midweek in the KDM Evolution Trophy.

While Douglas is set for a couple of months out of action, having been involved in the first-team this season, the teenager does not require surgery for the knee issue.

“I think we’re looking at maybe a couple of months, two months there,” said McLeish.

“I think it was a Grade 2 MCL tear. No surgery required, which was the biggest, if there’s any positive out of it, it’s that, because I think at the start we thought it was, I think everyone kind of feared the worst and so did Luke.

“But no surgery required at this stage, which is what you’re always trying to avoid for young players.

“He’ll get the support that he needs. And he’ll come back from it. And he’ll come back strong from it as well.”

Craig McLeish is hopeful Louis Jackson will be available for selection this weekend as St Mirren work to finalise a transfer from Manchester United.

The Scotland under-19 international is expected to complete a switch to Paisley from Old Trafford but has not yet been able to train with the St Mirren squad.

“We’re still working on it,” said McLeish. “There’s just the bits and pieces that we’re not quite there yet with.

“Louis is here, and he’s in the building, but he’s not able to train with us until everything’s signed off and agreed.

“We’ve still got another training session on Saturday ahead of the game, so the hope is that we get everything tidied up like we would like to and that he can be involved in the matchday squad.

“We’d love to have had him train on Thursday and Friday, but again, it’s just contractual things that the guys are dealing with and hopefully have a conclusion to it.”

St Mirren have completed the loan signing of Liverpool full-back Calvin Ramsay.

The former Aberdeen defender, 23, will spend the 2026/27 campaign in Paisley after finalising a switch to the Scottish Premiership.

“It’s a really tough place to come for opposition teams and I think the pitch is really good as well from when I played here. It’s a good set up, it’s a good club and I’m just excited to get going.

“I spoke to the manager a couple of times before I came up and he got his plan across and what he wanted to do. It’s probably a different St Mirren compared to the last few years. That’ll suit me. I’m comfortable on the ball, I’m composed, I like to get on it and try and create things and make things happen.”

How important is it just getting off to a really solid start? That’s you banked, six points already.

“Yeah, massive. We know that. It’s the points on the board that are the most important things. And if it comes down to us scoring a penalty and saving a penalty, it doesn’t really matter how you get it done.

“We’re trying to do things a certain way. But again, we were involved in the play-off games last year. And I never want to be involved in that situation again. They’re horrible games to be involved in. And we managed to survive through that.

“Survival isn’t our aim. We’re trying to aim as high up the table as we possibly can. Getting six points on the board early on is great. But it’s only two weeks out of 38 games. We need to just keep building on it.”

Craig McLeish has insisted his televised remark regarding referee Sean Murdoch was a “tongue-in-cheek” comment after St Mirren’s loss to Dunfermline.

The Paisley boss had twice asked who Murdoch had played for as he was shown replays of Samuel Ramos’ finish, which did not stand as the whistle had already been blown.

Referee Murdoch had already motioned for a foul on goalkeeper Aston Oxborough by Eseosa Sule before Ramos scored. Sule had stretched for the ball in a 50-50 with the goalkeeper and was deemed to have caught the shot-stopper.

McLeish was baffled by the decision and appeared to reference Murdoch’s playing career, where he played for Dunfermline, in his TV interview with Rob MacLean and Charlie Mulgrew.

Former Scotland internationalist Mulgrew said: “It’s never a foul on the goalie, unbelievable how the referee has come up with that decision.

“He used to be a goalkeeper, though the ref, so he’s obviously goalkeeper’s union there. That’s never a foul.”
