This year the anniversary of Princess Diana’s death arrived just as speculation swirled over whether her sons might reunite, coming only days after reports that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had returned to Britain. While August 31 has largely become a point of discussion on whether Prince William and Prince Harry will reunite. Her brother, Charles Spencer, marked the day as he does every year, sharing photos of the flag flying at half mast above Althorp, the Spencer family estate in Northamptonshire where Diana grew up and is buried, On the 29th anniversary of her death. His caption was brief and unmistakably raw: “31 August. My least favorite day.” Spencer is preparing to publish Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, marking the first time he has “spoken openly and at length” about Diana, according to publisher Penguin Michael Joseph, a division of Penguin Random House. He has said the goal is to set the record straight, explaining he wants to speak on Diana’s behalf and do so in an openly positive way.

Diana’s memory has not faded, and every anniversary proves it fresh again. People still gather at Kensington Palace to leave flowers by her old home, a ritual that has held since the year she died. What stands out most is how many of the mourners were not even alive when she died, drawn instead by a legacy that reaches past the royal family into the causes she made visible, from AIDS stigma to landmine clearance. Online, tributes this year ranged from strangers recalling exactly where they were when the news broke to people noting, with a kind of shock, that both her sons have now outlived the age she was. She remains missed not simply as a royal figure but as an icon.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has pulled the plug on John Galliano: Horizons, the career retrospective and accompanying Met Gala theme built around the designer, after weeks of mounting backlash over his past antisemitic and anti Asian remarks. Galliano announced his own withdrawal on Instagram, saying he had decided, “with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time.” Museum director Max Hollein said the decision came after “thoughtful discussions with many stakeholders and with John Galliano,” language that hints at real pressure behind the scenes even without naming names, since reports say donors threatened to pull funding from the museum if the show went forward. Anna Wintour, long one of Galliano’s most vocal defenders, praised his exit as “very courageous and a measure of the man he is,” but notably she described the exhibition as “postponed” rather than cancelled outright, a wording choice that leaves the door open. That distinction has fueled speculation over whether Wintour and the Met are simply waiting out the current storm with plans to revive Horizons later, or whether another institution entirely could pick it up once attention fades.

The bigger question circling the industry is whether this dents Wintour’s authority over the gala she has chaired for decades. Whether this becomes a real turning point for her grip on the event or leadership at Vogue, or just another controversy she rides out as she has others, is likely to be the story fashion watches into next spring.

Many in the art and fashion world are not happy, and the fallout has turned into a broader reckoning over whose past remarks get remembered and whose get forgiven. Yayoi Kusama who dies last week, celebrated everywhere as one of the most beloved artists alive, wrote in her own autobiography that she found Black people “exotic” and described Greenwich Village turning into a “slum” because of Black residents, passages that stayed largely unaddressed until journalists resurfaced them years later, first around a 2023 exhibition and again after her death this year. Alexander Wang, still a fixture of fashion week despite facing sexual assault allegations from more than a dozen accusers between 2019 and 2021, has likewise continued working with little lasting industry consequence. The pattern raises an uncomfortable question for a business now scrambling to draw a hard line around Galliano: if Kusama’s writing and Wang’s history drew apologies and headlines but no real exile, it seems fair to ask whether anyone in this industry is really in a position to cast the first stone.

For nearly a decade, Kate Middleton’s wardrobe operated on a fairly predictable logic: British labels for institutional moments, the odd high street rewear for relatability, and the odd European houses for state occasions, like Chanel worn in France. That logic has been complicated over the past years by a string of American, and specifically Californian, labels that had never touched her closet before, brands with direct, well-documented ties to Meghan Markle. The timing is newly relevant. Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, are temporarily relocating back to Britain, confirmed by multiple outlets on August 19 and 20, ending six years based in Montecito. Whether Kate’s California-leaning wardrobe was ever actually about Meghan’s location, or simply coincided with it, is the more interesting question now that the geography changes.

But borrowing brands is a different move entirely, and a harder one to explain. Kate is, by design and by job description, meant to be an ambassador for British fashion and textile manufacturing. Who What Wear has noted she “strongly favors wearing British fashion brands as a diplomatic gesture.” Kensington Palace has sent her to Melin Tregwynt in Pembrokeshire, to tartan weavers in Stirling, to mills in Carmarthenshire, Suffolk, Kent, and County Tyrone, and, most pointedly, to Hiut Denim in Cardigan in February 2026, the very Welsh label Meghan wore to Cardiff Castle in 2018, and whose founders later described their own boost from the association as a version of what’s known as the Meghan Markle effect, the sellout phenomenon that dates back to Meghan’s 2017 engagement announcement, when a white coat by Canadian label LINE the Label sold out and crashed the brand’s website within minutes, one of the earliest and most cited instances being the Strathberry bag she carried weeks later, which she said “changed everything” about how she approached dressing for public attention. A woman whose public role includes championing British textiles has no obvious institutional reason to also be building out a wardrobe of Los Angeles labels. The pattern is noticeable. What isn’t clear is the purpose behind it.

The Suits premiere circuit produced a steady stream of choices for Meghan. A strapless color block dress in white, black, gray, blue and pink for a TV Guide party in 2012. A teal Roland Mouret gown with a curve-hugging, fit-and-flare cut, more youthful than the shapes she would choose later. A floor-sweeping teal gown with a pleated top and modest neckline for the Elton John AIDS Foundation gala in New York in 2014. That same year she began her advocacy work with UN Women, and by 2015 she was delivering a speech on gender equality in New York alongside Hillary Clinton and then Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, a role that would shape the causes she picked up later as a royal. Her heels through this period were consistently pointed-toe pumps from Gianvito Rossi and Christian Louboutin, and Aquazzura was already a regular by the mid-2010s. Carolina Herrera showed up too, in cuts suitable for a red carpet.

The Working Royal Wardrobe

Joining the royal family meant adapting to a completely different set of expectations, the way any bride marrying into a family with its own dress codes would. Givenchy, Roland Mouret reworked into far more tailored shapes and muted colors, Dior, Erdem, Emilia Wickstead, Amanda Wakeley and Victoria Beckham entered the rotation, alongside a steady run of British and Commonwealth designers chosen with obvious care. Some she had already used before. Hats and fascinators appeared for the first time. Her palette moved toward camel, navy, cream and white, tones she has said were chosen deliberately so she would not draw focus away from more senior royals standing beside her.

The Aquazzura shoes stayed in constant rotation, introducing the brand to the royal circuit. And her habit of pairing one major fashion house with a small, largely unknown female-founded label in the same outfit continued, a Strathberry bag beside a coat, a Karen Walker ring beside a custom gown. This is where the Meghan Effect entered fashion vocabulary: the idea that a single appearance in an under-the-radar brand could sell it out overnight and change the trajectory of a small business. She has spoken about this directly, telling the New York Times that watching it happen to Strathberry changed how she thought about getting dressed altogether.

For six years, the story of the British monarchy’s rift was told almost entirely in terms of loss. A grandfather who barely knew his grandchildren. A son estranged from a father he once idolized. A brotherhood, forged in grief over their mother, that had curdled into rivalry. But the events of this summer, culminating in a move that comes six years after the couple stepped back from official duties, tell a different story, one in which the person doing the least public talking may have done the most strategic winning.

King Charles III did not set the wheels in motion; he just made sure it happened. By most accounts, he did not even know it was coming (or did he?). Charles was allegedly first made aware of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s plans to relocate on Sunday, Aug. 16, and the couple intends to relocate from the US to a private, non-royal residence outside London, with the couple’s children, Archie and Lilibet, also expected to start at a British school in September. But timing and intention are different things. What Charles built, patiently and over years of rebuffed overtures, was the emotional runway that made a homecoming feel possible at all.

For years, Prince Harry has warned about the British press's institutional bullying and harassment through his court cases, public statements, and his memoir “Spare”. He has repeatedly asked Parliament to pass legal reforms to install guardrails on what the famously intrusive Fleet Street can and should not do, but it fell on deaf ears. On any given day, at least 5 mostly negative articles are written about this wife, Meghan Markle, for a decade. Most recently, Dr. Jason Arday had 188 articles written about him in 9 days after resigning from his post by stating that he had reached “the limits of what any person should be reasonably expected to endure.” How did the media respond with 188 articles? On August 14th, he was found dead at only 41 years old.

Just like Meghan was branded “Duchess Difficult, Megxit, Eva ( a reference to Diva), and Megflix,” he was branded “Plagiarism Professor, and DEI Poster Boy.” The leading newspapers coinciding with royal rota: The Times, The Telegraph, The Daily Mail, and the Independent- most of which Prince Harry has sued with varying degrees of success.

Let’s start at the beginning:

In November 2016, Kensington Palace did something it almost never does. It issued a statement in Prince Harry’s name naming what his own country’s newspapers were doing to the woman he loved. He was six months into a relationship with an American named Meghan Markle, and he had watched, he said, as she absorbed a “wave of abuse and harassment,” including “the racial undertones of comment pieces and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls.” It read like a young man losing patience. In hindsight, it reads like an opening statement.

This piece is about two people, not one. Meghan Markle is alive to describe what a sustained, racially charged media campaign did to her and Dr. Jason Arday, Cambridge University’s youngest-ever Black professor. He was found dead in August 2026, six days after resigning under a public campaign his own family says amounted to sustained abuse.

It is a pattern, documented not just by the people who lived it but by data scientists, sociologists, and 72 women who sit in the British Parliament, of how a historically white British institutional press has treated Black and biracial public figures who reach unusual visibility. This is an accounting of that pattern, drawn from the public record, for both of them.

Queen Elizabeth, the longest-serving British monarch, knew what her people required of a monarch. She worked through cancer for years, which she never disclosed to the public until her final days, and died at the age of 96. She became queen before some thought she was ready, and rose to the challenge. When some believed her rule would be undermined, she established a consistent protocol for the men in grey suits. Consistency is the key to fulfilling any role, and Elizabeth Regina understood that.

She was no style icon, but her style became iconic. Why? Consistency. After a certain age, her coat dress, hat of the same color, and her black Launer London handbag with shoes became almost a costume, and recognizable around the world. She was able to take long holidays without people complaining because when she was not on holiday, she was consistently working, delivering her presence, her biggest currency. The royals don't need to do; they need to be seen as doing, and they keep their cushy taxpayer-funded salaries, trusts, palaces, and taxpayer-funded security. But that doesn’t seem to be enough now.

King Charles, who can best be described as the most successful Prince of Wales, was a very industrious man. Like businessmen, he created a foundation, the most famous and successful one being the Prince's Trust, now known as the King’s Trust, like Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and others ( in fact, Charles did it before him; he set up a financial vehicle that made him richer than his mother, influential, all while pursuing his passions. Foundations give royals a legal structure to hold assets, run charitable ventures, and generate income outside the direct control of the Crown Estate or the Sovereign Grant, offering both financial independence and favorable tax treatment. For a royal like Charles or William, a foundation functions less like a personal bank account and more like a private holding company: it owns property, backs commercial ventures, and channels profits into causes that build his public image, all while keeping the underlying wealth structurally separate from the monarchy itself.

William and Harry set up their own foundation, The Royal Foundation, which is now under Prince William and Kate Middleton. Everyone who is rich enough has a foundation nowadays; what was once the exception has become the norm. Yet as the people have caught on, foundations now seem to be mostly tax-avoidance vehicles. As a means for the ultra-rich to avoid taxes and curry favor, they accept donations from sketchy donors who want to whitewash their names and sit beside a Prince, sometimes even in cash in briefcases. Foundations are not all bad; some do actual work, but there has been a shift.

In the world we live in, most news is bad news nowadays. This film is the antidote to all of that. Cookie Queens is refreshing, funny, warm, and cute- just what we need in the world right now. The documentary, directed by Alysa Nahmias and executive produced by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle through their Archewell Productions, follows four girls ranging in age from five to twelve as they compete during Girl Scout cookie season, an $800 million-a-year phenomenon most of us never think twice about from the buying end. They are so determined it’s genuinely inspiring, and it truly makes you hope the American dream is still alive, particularly in girls like these Cookie Queens.

There is heartbreak too. The littlest girl, five-year-old Ara from San Diego, believes an adult when the woman says, after being asked if she wants Girl Scout cookies, “maybe later.” Ara tells her dad, " Let’s sell one more; let’s wait for her. She said she’d be back later, so let’s wait for her.” Her dad, an adult who knows full well the woman likely will not return, gently suggests maybe they should finish for the day. Ara responds, No, Dad, just one more box. She said she would be back. I’m going to wait for her.”

Then there is Olive, twelve, from Charlotte, North Carolina, the film’s top seller, who at times sells six-dollar cookies for thirty dollars at a time, telling customers, want to buy another one and make it an even thirty? Most say yes. Yet Olive has a quietly devastating conversation with her mother, admitting she isn’t sure if she is doing this for herself or for her mom, this after her mother starts pushing her to sell ten thousand boxes once she has already passed nine thousand, well beyond the eight thousand goal Olive had originally set for herself. At another point, Olive asks her best friend, who would I be if I wasn’t the top seller? That’s what I am. Her friend’s response is the quiet emotional center of the film: you are kind, you organized the camp, you lead, you do this. In other words, her friend reminds her that her worth is more than the title she has built her identity around. Olive says simply, I am so glad I have you. The two met, fittingly, as Girl Scouts.

Cookie Queens had its world premiere at Sundance in January, where it took home the festival’s Audience Award, before opening in select theaters this past week under distributor Roadside Attractions. Critics have largely matched the same warmth this review does. Screen Rant called it one of the most charming films of the year, noting that it never once feels like it is exploiting its young subjects, choosing instead to zero in on four individual girls rather than treating the Girl Scouts as a faceless institution. At ninety-one minutes and rated G, it is the rare documentary that belongs in front of the whole family, cookie lovers or not.

This review is admittedly biased, coming from a former Brownie, Junior, and Cadette. But this is the kind of film we all need right now, with the world being what it is. Watching these four marvelous girls, Ara, Olive, and their fellow Cookie Queens Shannon Elizabeth and Nikki, take on America one cookie table at a time is heartwarming in a way that offers something real. A little bit of hope.

Martha Stewart can be considered the queen of reinvention, a woman who has spent two decades insisting her own conviction was overblown relative to what plenty of far more powerful people get away with. It’s not an unreasonable position to hold in 2026. The sitting president is himself a convicted felon, and it emerged just this week that roughly 300 accounts tied to his businesses were closed by Capital One back in 2021 after the bank’s anti-money laundering team flagged the activity in an internal review, a closure Trump’s team calls political retaliation, and the bank calls routine compliance. Set against that, Stewart’s five months at Alderson for lying to federal investigators about a stock sale looks almost quaint. She has used the two decades since to build one of the most complete rehabilitations in modern American celebrity. What’s harder to find in those same twenty years is much evidence that she’s extended the grace she demanded for herself to the women who came up after her.

Monochromatic, International Brands, Deeper Meaning

Meghan Markle’s first appearance with the royal family came on Christmas Day, December 25, 2017, when she joined Prince Harry and the rest of the Windsors on the traditional walk to St Mary Magdalene Church at Sandringham. Everything she wore that morning ended up saying something, and most items sold out, setting the tone for how she would approach royal fashion going forward.

She wore a camel-colored wrap coat by Sentaler, a Toronto-based label founded and led. Bojana Sentaler, a designer who moved to Toronto from Serbia as a kid, launched it in 2009 and is still Founder, President, and Creative Director. Bojana Sentaler herself confirmed to Forbes that it caused "an increased demand and a spike in traffic across all of our platforms" and sold out instantly with multiple back orders. Meghan paired with a brown hat by milliner Phillip Treacy, Stuart Weitzman (American Brand) over-the-knee boots in matching nutmeg suede, and a Chloé Pixie bag.(French Brand, very Parisian coded). Underneath the coat was a dark cherry Club Monaco dress and Maison Birks diamond earrings. The result was a tonal, monochromatic look built almost entirely in shades of camel and brown, at a time when most royal women paired colorful coats with the same predictable beige or black shoes and handbags. Meghan matched everything instead, and that tonal dressing became one of her signatures and is now a signature for most royal women.

The choice of Sentaler was not random either. It is a Canadian brand, and Meghan had spent years living in Toronto while filming Suits. Reaching for a label from a Commonwealth country she actually called home, rather than defaulting to the usual British houses the royal family cycles through again and again, was a quiet way of pointing to her own roots while still dressing for the occasion. It signaled early on that she would treat fashion as a way to reference where she came from, not just where she had arrived.

The look went instantly viral. Her hat in particular became a meme, with people online comparing it to the poop emoji, even though royal hats are, let’s be honest, rarely anyone’s favorite part of the outfit. Looking back, it reads as an early, almost petty sign of how differently her fashion choices would be picked apart compared to the rest of the family, simply because they were getting so much more attention.

Was this the first hint of what was coming? In hindsight, yes.

In 2026, it seems that what many once held as sacred and untouchable is, in fact, for sale.

That includes Prince William. The current Prince of Wales announced in May that he has decided to sell 20% of the Duchy of Cornwall, an estate created in the 14th century on land critics argue was seized rather than rightfully acquired by the Crown, land some say still belongs to the people of England. The move has drawn real opposition. Republic, the anti-monarchy campaign group, has argued the Duchy’s assets are effectively state property and that its profits should go to public services rather than what its chief executive Graham Smith has called “the pockets of two billionaires.” Tenant farmers on the Duchy’s Bradninch estate in Devon have pushed back too. George Dunn, chief executive of the Tenant Farmers Association, said the organization was “disappointed” by the sale, warning that some farmers would be unable to raise the capital needed to buy their land and could face “major upheaval” as a result. One local resident, John Palmer, described the announcement as “unexpected and shocking news” that has been “enormously stressful for tenants and employees of the duchy estate.” Some podcasters have gone further, calling the sale a bid by William for popularity and control. And control is often about money: money can buy access, buy social media posts, and buy the appearance of being the most popular royal, and being named “Best Dressed,” whether or not that’s actually true.

Then there’s FIFA. This week, FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced a plan to sell a stake in a new subsidiary managing World Cup commercial rights to private equity, mirroring the kind of privatization William is pursuing with the Duchy. The plan was immediately rebuked by UEFA, which called it “irresponsible and indefensible” and threatened to boycott FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, if it goes ahead.

Concentration of power seems to be something of a pattern for Infantino. It’s the same 2021 vibe, when the European Super League was floated and ultimately fell apart within 48 hours. Back then, William, using his position as president of the FA, spoke out at length. In a personal statement posted from his official Instagram account, he wrote:

Two stories published make an unintentionally tidy case study: Yesterday, two stories that reveal more about the media apparatus than about its subject: Vanity Fair anchoring an Oprah Winfrey retrospective to a career moment Meghan wasn’t the protagonist of, and Hello using a hotel’s reopening as pretext to relitigate a five-year-old baby shower. It’s worth sitting with how curious that timing is. These are two publications that have not been kind to Meghan, running a steady stream of coverage on her perceived shortcomings and business failures, and yet both reached for her, specifically, when they needed something to reliably move.

Meghan is one of the most reliable traffic engines in celebrity media, full stop, independent of whether the coverage is warm or hostile, and the outlets extracting that value from her are frequently the same ones arguing, in the next paragraph, that she shouldn’t be allowed to extract value from herself. She is permitted to be a product. She is not permitted to be a proprietor. That distinction, not “does she sell,” is the actual mechanism. It’s one of the oldest patterns in how the press has handled women who married into institutions bigger than themselves and don’t toe the line.

A short history of the “outsider woman” beat

Princess Diana’s clothing, weight, and expressions were documented daily by the same press that had elevated her into a global commodity; paparazzi income depended on her image the way Hello’s traffic now depends on Meghan’s. The tabloid economy needed her endlessly visible and endlessly available to be picked apart, and the same outlets selling her image also ran the pieces scolding her for courting attention. She was, structurally, both the product and the accused shoplifter.

In CNN’s 2025 docuseries “American Prince: JFK Jr.,” Tina Brown, former editor of Vanity Fair and Tatler, and a career built substantially on chronicling royal and quasi-royal families from the inside, said there was “quite a lot about Carolyn that was a bit ‘Meghanish,’” describing the pressure of what she called the “monster of the media” as something Bessette-Kennedy ultimately “fell apart” under. It’s worth pointing out Brown’s own position while making that comparison: few editors have built more sustained career capital off proximity to exactly these institutions, the Windsors, the Kennedys, and by extension the women who married into them and didn’t survive the scrutiny intact, Diana included, whose biography Brown also wrote. Drawing a straight line from Bessette-Kennedy’s isolation and depression under media siege, and Diana’s, to Meghan’s present coverage isn’t a stretch; it’s the same commentator naming the same pattern across three women, two of whom didn’t live to see how their stories were finished being told. Bessette-Kennedy and Kennedy Jr. died in 1999, hounded in life by exactly the kind of press attention that treated her as fair game precisely because she had married in. Diana died in 1997, fleeing photographers. The throughline isn’t subtle: women who marry into scrutinized institutions become public property whose commercial and emotional value the press extracts on its own schedule, and any attempt by the woman herself to control that value, wear what she wants, sell what she wants, go quiet when she wants, is retroactively recast as the offense.

Watch the broadcast footage from this year's Championships with the sound off, and a different tournament emerges: rows of empty seats behind a small, relentlessly photographed cluster of the same fifty people, restyled daily. Wimbledon has completed its conversion from a sporting institution to a fashion editorial with a scoreboard attached.

The clearest evidence isn't the clothes. It's the grooming. Full hair and makeup, camera-ready and static for hours, has replaced the windswept, semi-improvised look that once defined daytime spectator dressing. Nobody arrives looking like they wandered in from lunch anymore. Everyone arrives lit, contoured, and blocked out like they're on set. Because they are.

There was a time when Wimbledon's Centre Court was the story. This year, the story was who was wearing what. Scroll through the broadcast footage or the flood of Getty images from the fortnight, and the pattern is unmistakable: rows of empty seats behind a tight, gleaming cluster of the photographed. Wimbledon has quietly completed its transformation from sporting institution to influencer marketing activation with a scoreboard attached, and 2026 was the year the seams showed.

Long Live the King of Wimbledon

Every empire needs a myth about its own reach, and the fashion history of monarchy offers a useful one. For centuries, a royal court signaled loyalty through fashion. Sumptuary laws dictated who could wear silk and who could wear wool. Royal warrants told the public which tradesmen the crown trusted with its linen, its leather, its label. What you wore was status, propaganda, and it was allegiance made visible. Ralph Lauren understood, decades ago, that Wimbledon runs on precisely that same logic, and he built a warrant system of his own.

As Nathan Rothschild is famously said to have remarked, "I care not what puppet is placed upon the throne of England to rule the empire on which the sun never sets. Since 2006, Ralph Lauren has been Wimbledon’s sole Official Outfitter, the first designer in the tournament’s 149-year history to hold that title, and the partnership entered its third decade in 2026 on a fresh multi-year extension. He dresses the ball kids. He dresses the line judges and the on-court officials, the entire visual aesthetic that the cameras cut to between points. He built a topiary Polo Bear out of the court’s own grass strain for a Sloane Square takeover, rebuilt the Bond Street flagship into a Wimbledon shrine for the fortnight, and installed grass courts in Central Park so the halo could travel to New York without the tournament ever leaving London. In 2025 alone, that machinery produced $22.4 million in Media Impact Value, more than any other brand at the tournament, built on partnerships with roughly 2,580 creators paid or gifted to post from the grounds.

Jannik Sinner played the entire Championships in Nike, his kit sponsor, with Gucci as his personal fashion deal alongside Rolex, Head, and Lavazza; he is arguably the most commercially valuable body on that court, and he still lost the fashion tournament to a brand that never touched his skin. Ralph doesn’t need the champion. He already has the umpire, the ball boy, the stands, and the suite everyone lines up outside hoping to be photographed near, whether or not they know what a service break is.

That is the empire. And its most valuable subject is Rothschild-in-reverse. Kate Middleton now makes sure something Ralph Lauren appears in every single Wimbledon outing she makes, whether it’s the sunglasses, the pumps, and that is not incidental styling.

This summer, Aquazzura and Net-a-Porter proved the point again. The house has become one of the genuine “it” labels among the ton, and nothing signals the start of the season quite like a French Riviera address book.

The occasion was the launch of the Aquazzura x Net-a-Porter capsule, a collection built for the register between long lunches on the Mediterranean and evening celebrations that run past midnight. The pieces draw on the Aquazzura workshop’s Italian craftsmanship paired with Net-a-Porter’s approach to easy, elevated dressing, meant for every moment of the season. The line is available exclusively through Net-a-Porter.

To mark it, the luxury retailer and the footwear brand staged what amounted to a two-day audition for summer itself. Net-a-Porter’s CEO Heather Kaminetsky and Aquazzura’s founder and creative director Edgardo Osorio’s dream. As evening fell, the party shifted into a proper celebration, with DJ sets by Cole Trickle and Baptiste Caffrey turning the terraces into an open-air dance floor above the sea. Osorio hosted at the Palais Bulles, the bubble-shaped house on the Cap d’Antibes coastline built by architect Antti Lovag and later owned by Pierre Cardin. It is not a subtle venue; it is an aesthetic dream.

Lady Kitty Spencer arrived first in line, as she tends to. Princess Diana’s niece made the trip over the Fourth of July weekend for both the dinner and the brunch that followed. For the party, she chose a white dress with princess seams, then brought in a jolt of yellow with Aquazzura’s crystal-trimmed Tequila Mules and the label’s gingham Bow Tie Clutch. For the seaside brunch, she wore a Brunello Cucinelli seersucker dress with flat Aquazzura sandals. She carried the brand’s Belgravia Wicker Vanity Crossbody and coordinated her basket bag with Nicky Hilton Rothschild’s own version in green leather.

Tamara Falcó, Marchioness of Griñón, was on the list as well, alongside a run of names that included Kathy Hilton, Bianca Brandolini d’Adda, Alex Rivière, Noor Fares, and Rebecca Donaldson. Falcó’s presence tracks. Madrid’s social register and the Riviera’s have overlapped for decades.

Alessandra de Osma, Princess Christian of Hanover, also attended the dinner alongside Princess Cleo Oettingen Spielberg, and with Nicky Hilton Rothschild, Kathy Hilton, and Poppy Delevingne. Oettingen Spielberg, married into the Bavarian nobility and a longstanding face of the brand, has worn Aquazzura long enough and widely enough that seeing her there is nothing new.

The capsule itself deserves more attention than the guest list, even if the guest list is more fun to read. The party, and the morning after

Day two was recovery, styled as leisure. The brunch, held the following morning at Tétou on the Golfe-Juan waterfront, was the quieter half of the weekend, seaside and considerably more low-key, the kind of event where a seersucker dress and flat sandals read as more correct than anything sequined.

The ton does not want to be entertained for two days straight. It wants one night that photographs well and one morning that recovers well. Aquazzura and Net-a-Porter gave them both.

It seems that Prince Harry does not understand that the press will follow him wherever he goes and that his biggest chess move is keeping them on their toes with the element of surprise. Anytime he announces something, it just gives certain factions of the media ammo to spin story after story about one of its biggest cash cows, Diana’s son.

Of course, one can’t blame Harry for ateempting to maintain “good relations” and following orders; in fact, he is to be praised for not being paranoid, he still complied to file a secutiry request with RAVEC, despite knowing that members of the committe are also members of the royal household and that as soon as he files it will be leaked to both the royal household and the press. And that is howit all started, with Harry following instructions and filling a security request, security for which he offered to pay, but was overturned, so in effect Harry can neither pay for this security ( that would mean not having to ask RAVEC permisiion, a mechanism for control ) nor can he be granted access to security, depsite being a war veteran, the kings son and a man threatehened by white supremacist groups. This first tea drop is a timeline of events that lead up to Harry’s verdict and visit.

The reversal that broke the case:

Prince Harry’s Associated Newspapers lawsuit rested heavily on one witness, Gavin Burrows, a former private investigator. In 2021, Burrows gave a statement to Harry’s legal team claiming he had personally carried out phone hacking and blagging for the Mail on Sunday hundreds of times between 2000 and 2005. That statement became a foundation of the claimants’ case built around him. By the time the trial reached his testimony, Burrows had completely reversed himself. He called his own 2021 statement “absolutely incorrect,” testified that its signature had been forged, and instead gave a new statement supporting Associated Newspapers’ defense. Justice Nicklin ruled that Burrows “did not give credible evidence” regarding the multiple articles his original statement had underpinned, and those specific claims were dismissed as a direct result.

Why he changed course is not addressed anywhere in the reporting. No outlet, no court filing referenced in coverage, and no statement from either side offers an explanation for the reversal itself, whether he was paid, pressured, mistaken the first time, or lying the second time. That question sits open. It’s worth noting because a single witness’s flip essentially took out a load-bearing piece of a four-year, seven-claimant, eleven-week case, and nobody on record has said why it happened.

2021 — CONFIRMED. Gavin Burrows gives his original statement to Harry’s legal team, claiming involvement in hacking and blagging hundreds of times between 2000 and 2005.

October 2022 — CONFIRMED. The case is filed by Harry, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Elton John, David Furnish, Sadie Frost, Elizabeth Hurley, and Sir Simon Hughes against Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, and MailOnline. The claim covers roughly 50 articles, 14 tied directly to Harry, alleging voicemail interception, landline bugging, blagging, payments to police officials, and impersonation to obtain medical records, spanning conduct alleged between 1993 and 2011.

December 2023 — CONFIRMED, background. Harry wins his separate case against Mirror Group Newspapers. A High Court judge finds phone hacking was “extensive” from at least 1998 to 2011 and awards Harry £140,600 in damages.

January 2025 — CONFIRMED, background. Sun publisher News Group Newspapers settles with Harry and Lord Tom Watson the day before their trial was due to begin, admitting “unlawful activities carried out by private investigators” on behalf of The Sun between 1996 and 2011 and apologizing for activities at the News of the World.

May 2025 — CONFIRMED, background. Harry loses his legal appeal to have his automatic, taxpayer-funded UK security restored following the 2020 withdrawal after he stepped back from royal duties.

January 19, 2026 — CONFIRMED. The Associated Newspapers trial opens at London’s High Court. Press Gazette describes it as likely the most expensive and complex privacy case in British legal history. Dozens of witnesses testify over the following weeks, including Harry, the other claimants, and current or former Associated Newspapers journalists and executives. At some point in this window, Burrows testifies and reverses his account, though the exact date within the trial isn’t specified in the coverage I found.

January 2026, cross-examination — CONFIRMED, direct quotes. Harry testified: “They continue to come after me, they have made my wife’s life an absolute misery.” He also said he could not complain about some of the 14 articles at the time “because of the institution I was in.”

February 2026 — CONFIRMED. Harry’s private security firm prepares its confidential “Threat and Vulnerability Risk Assessment” and submits it to Ravec, the committee deciding state-funded protection for senior royals and politicians.

March 31, 2026 — CONFIRMED, via Reuters. Judge Nicklin says on the record his ruling will “take some time.” Reuters describes the trial as “intensive,” putting its length at roughly ten weeks in that report, later rounding to eleven weeks after the verdict, a discrepancy that’s Reuters’ own across two dates and not resolved elsewhere. Reuters also quotes Associated Newspapers calling the case “preposterous smears” at that stage.

June 2026 — REPORTED, sourcing not fully specified. Harry and Meghan plan to bring Archie and Lilibet to the UK, their first joint visit since the 2022 Platinum Jubilee. An accommodation offer at a royal residence is floated around this time.

July 1, 2026 — CONFIRMED. ITV News publishes the leaked security report.
